Abstract
Expanded graphite (EG) stands out as a promising material for the negative electrode in potassium-ion batteries. However, its full potential is hindered by the limited diffusion pathway and storage sites for potassium ions, restricting the improvement of its electrochemical performance. To overcome this challenge, defect engineering emerges as a highly effective strategy to enhance the adsorption and reaction kinetics of potassium ions on electrode materials. This study delves into the specific effectiveness of defects in facilitating potassium storage, exploring the impact of defect-rich structures on dynamic processes. Employing ball milling, we introduce surface defects in EG, uncovering unique effects on its electrochemical behavior. These defects exhibit a remarkable ability to adsorb a significant quantity of potassium ions, facilitating the subsequent intercalation of potassium ions into the graphite structure. Consequently, this process leads to a higher potassium voltage. Furthermore, the generation of a diluted stage compound is more pronounced under high voltage conditions, promoting the progression of multiple stage reactions. Consequently, the EG sample post-ball milling demonstrates a notable capacity of 286.2 mAh g-1 at a current density of 25 mA g-1, showcasing an outstanding rate capability that surpasses that of pristine EG. This research not only highlights the efficacy of defect engineering in carbon materials but also provides unique insights into the specific manifestations of defects on dynamic processes, contributing to the advancement of potassium-ion battery technology.

Abstract
MXenes, as emerging 2D sensing materials for next-generation electronics, have attracted tremendous attention owing to their extraordinary electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and flexibility. However, challenges remain due to the weak stability in the oxygen environment and nonnegligible aggregation of layered MXenes, which severely affect the durability and sensing performances of the corresponding MXene-based pressure sensors, respectively. Here, in this work, we propose an easy-to-fabricate self-assembly strategy to prepare multilayered MXene composite films, where the first layer MXene is hydrogen-bond self-assembled on the electrospun thermoplastic urethane (TPU) fibers surface and the anti-oxidized functionalized-MXene (f-MXene) is subsequently adhered on the MXene layer by spontaneous electrostatic attraction. Remarkably, the f-MXene surface is functionalized with silanization reagents to form a hydrophobic protective layer, thus preventing the oxidation of the MXene-based pressure sensor during service. Simultaneously, the electrostatic self-assembled MXene and f-MXene successfully avoid the invalid stacking of MXene, leading to an improved pressure sensitivity. Moreover, the adopted electrospinning method can facilitate cyclic self-assembly and the formation of a hierarchical micro-nano porous structure of the multilayered f-MXene/MXene/TPU (M-fM2T) composite. The gradient pores can generate changes in the conductive pathways within a wide loading range, broadening the pressure detection range of the as-proposed multilayered f-MXene/MXene/TPU piezoresistive sensor (M-fM2TPS). Experimentally, these novel features endow our M-fM2TPS with an outstanding maximum sensitivity of 40.31 kPa-1 and an extensive sensing range of up to 120 kPa. Additionally, our M-fM2TPS exhibits excellent anti-oxidized properties for environmental stability and mechanical reliability for long-term use, which shows only ~0.8% fractional resistance changes after being placed in a natural environment for over 30 days and provides a reproducible loading-unloading pressure measurement for more than 1000 cycles. As a proof of concept, the M-fM2TPS is deployed to monitor human movements and radial artery pulse. Our anti-oxidized self-assembly strategy of multilayered MXene is expected to guide the future investigation of MXene-based advanced sensors with commercial values.

Abstract
MXene nanosheets and ordered porous carbons both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Assembling and combining the advantages of the two will be a good choice for battery electrode hosts of active materials. In this work, an electrostatic separation-adsorption strategy is proposed to realize the ordered alternating self-assembly of MXene nanosheets and ordered porous carbon (MPOC), obtaining a unique wall-like porous material with a high conductivity and interconnected porous nanostructure, which strengthens the transfer rate of electrons and ions simultaneously. Meanwhile, the introduction of N-doping from porous carbon into MPOC prolongs the cycle life. When use red phosphorus (RP) as active materials, the MPOC@RP anode exhibited high-capacity output (2454.3 and 2408.1 mAh g-1 in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) at 0.1 C) and long cycle life (the decay rates per cycle of 0.028% and 0.036% after 1500 and 1200 cycles at 2 C in LIBs and SIBs respectively). The successful application in RP anodes displays great potential in other electrode materials such as silicon, sulfur, selenium, and so on. Meanwhile, this strategy is also effective to design other composites materials like MXene and carbon nanotubes, MXene and Graphene, and so on.

Abstract
2D transition metal carbides and carbonitrides (MXenes) have emerged as promising electrode materials for electrochemistry ion capture but always suffer from severe layer-restacking and irreversible oxidation that restrains their electrochemical performance. Here we design a dual strategy of microstructure tailoring and heterostructure construction to synthesize a unique 3D grape string-like heterostructure consisting of Ti3C2Tx MXene hollow microspheres wrapped by fungi-derived N-doping carbon nanoribbons (denoted as GMNC). The 3D grape string-like heterostructure effectively avoids the aggregation of Ti3C2Tx MXene sheets and enhances the stability of MXenes, providing abundant active sites for ion capture, and an interconnected conductive bionic nanofiber network for high-rate electron transport. In consequence, GMNC achieves a superior adsorption capacity for sodium ions (Na+) in capacitive deionization (CDI) (162.37 mg gNaCl-1) with an ultra-high instantaneous adsorption rate (30.52 mg g-1 min-1) at an applied voltage of 1.6 V and satisfactory cycle stability over 100 cycles, which is a strong performer among the state-of-the-art values for MXene-based CDI electrodes. In addition, in situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (EQCM-D) measurement combined with density functional theory (DFT) reveals the mechanisms of the Na+ capture process in the GMNC heterostructure. This work opens a new avenue for designing high-performance MXenes with a 3D hierarchical heterostructure for advanced electrochemical applications.

Abstract
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have gradually become one of the most promising energy storage techniques in the current era of post-lithium-ion batteries. For anodes, transitional metal selenides (TMSe) based materials are welcomed choices , owing to relatively higher specific capacities and enriched redox active sites. Nevertheless, current bottlenecks are blamed for their poor intrinsic electronic conductivities, and uncontrollable volume expansion during redox reactions. Given that, an interfacial-confined isochronous conversion strategy is proposed, to prepare orthorhombic/cubic biphasic TMSe heterostructure, namely CuSe/Cu3 VSe4 , through using MXene as the precursor, followed by Cu/Se dual anchorage. As-designed biphasic TMSe heterostructure endows unique hierarchical structure, which contains adequate insertion sites and diffusion spacing for Na ions, besides, the surficial pseudocapacitive storage behaviors can be also proceeded like 2D MXene. By further investigation on electronic structure, the theoretical calculations indicate that biphasic CuSe/Cu3 VSe4 anode exhibits well-enhanced properties, with smaller bandgap and thus greatly improves intrinsic poor conductivities. In addition, the dual redox centers can enhance the electrochemical Na ions storage abilities. As a result, the as-designed biphasic TMSe anode can deliver a reversible specific capacity of 576.8 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 , favorable Na affinity, and reduced diffusion barriers. This work discloses a synchronous solution toward demerits in conductivities and lifespan, which is inspiring for TMSe-based anode development in SIBs systems.

Abstract
Novel 2D layered MXene materials were first reported in 2011 at Drexel University. MXenes are widely used in multidisciplinary applications due to their anomalous electrical conductivity, high surface area, and chemical, mechanical, and physical properties. This review summarises MXene synthesis and applications in environmental sensing. The first section describes different methods for MXene synthesis, including fluorinated and non-fluorinated methods. MXene's layered structure, surface terminal groups, and the space between layers significantly impact its properties. Different methods to separate different MXene layers are also discussed using various intercalation reagents and commercially synthesized MXene without compromising the environment. This review also explains the effect of MXene's surface functionalization on its characteristics. The second section of the review describes gas and pesticide sensing applications of Mxenes and its composites. Its good conductivity, surface functionalization with negatively charged groups, intrinsic chemical nature, and good mechanical stability make it a prominent material for room temperature sensing of environmental samples, such as polar and nonpolar gases, volatile organic compounds, and pesticides. This review will enhance the young scientists' knowledge of MXene-based materials and stimulate their diversity and hybrid conformation in environmental sensing applications.

Abstract
Magnesium-based battery system has emerged as the potential candidate to beyond Li-ion battery system due to the numerous advantageous of magnesium anode, such as natural abundance, high capacity and dendrites free. However, the selection of cathode materials and the intercalation of magnesium-ions in the cathode host material remains a challenge due to the strong interaction of highly polar divalent magnesium ions with the cathode material, making the diffusion of magnesium ions relatively difficult. Herein, the flexible TiVCTx MXene film was developed via a facile and economical approach. As the cathode host material for magnesium-ion storage, the freestanding TiVCTx MXene film displays a high specific capacity of 111 and 135 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.05 A g-1 for magnesium-ion batteries (MIB) and Mg/Li hybrid batteries (MLHB). Furthermore, a long-term cycling stability over 1000 cycles was demonstrated and a detailed investigation of the unique long activation phenomenon of MXene films during cycling. More importantly, the reaction mechanism of magnesium-ion storage was validated, i.e., the MXene interlayer spacing variation with the reversible Mg2+ diffusion behavior. This work reveals the magnesium storage mechanism of MXene materials and provides a new pathway for high-performance storage of magnesium-ion cathode materials.

Abstract
The precisely engineered structures of materials greatly influence the manifestation of their properties. For example, in the process of alkali metal ion storage, a carefully designed structure capable of accommodating inserted and extracted ions will improve the stability of material cycling. The present study explores the uniform distribution of self-grown carbon nanotubes to provide structural support for the conductive and elastic MXene layers of Ti3C2Tx-Co@NCNTs. Furthermore, a compatible electrolyte system has been optimized by analyzing the solvation structure and carefully regulating the component in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. Mechanistic studies demonstrate that the decomposition predominantly controlled by FSI- leads to the formation of a robust inorganic SEI layer enriched with KF, thus effectively inhibiting irreversible side reactions and major structural deterioration. Confirming our expectations, Ti3C2Tx-Co@NCNTs exhibits an impressive reversible capacity of 260 mA h g-1, even after 2000 cycles at 500 mA g-1 in 1 M KFSI (DME), surpassing most MXene-based anodes reported for PIBs. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify the superior electronic conductivity and lower K+ diffusion energy barriers of the novel superstructure of Ti3C2Tx-Co@NCNTs, thereby affirming the improved electrochemical kinetics. This study presents systematic evaluation methodologies for future research on MXene-based anodes in PIBs.

Abstract
Developing high-performance anode materials remains a significant challenge for clean energy storage systems. Herein, we investigated the (MXene/MoSe2@C) heterostructure hybrid nanostructure as a superior anode material for application in lithium, sodium, and potassium ion batteries (LIBs, SIBs, and PIBs). Moreover, the anode structure's stability was examined via the open-source Large-scale atomic/molecular massively Parallel Simulator code. Our results indicated that the migration of SIBs toward the anode material is significantly greater than other ions during charge and discharge cycles. Therefore, SIBs systems can be competitive with PIBs and LIBs systems. In addition, the average values of the potential energies for the anode materials/ions complexes are about ~ - 713.65, ~ - 2030.41, and ~ - 912.36 kcal mol-1 in systems LIBs, SIBs, and PIBs, respectively. This study provides a rational design strategy to develop high-performance anode materials in SIBs/PIBs/LIBs systems, which can be developed for other transition metal chalcogenide-based composites as a superior anode of alkali metal ion battery storage systems.

Abstract
Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have emerged as promising candidates for sodium-based batteries due to their cost-effectiveness and excellent flexibility. However, achieving high ionic conductivity and desirable mechanical properties in SPEs remains a challenge. In this study, we investigated an AB diblock copolymer, PS-PEA(BuImTFSI), as a potential SPE for sodium batteries. We explored binary and ternary electrolyte systems by combining the polymer with salt and [C3mpyr][FSI] ionic liquid (IL) and analyzed their thermal and electrochemical properties. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed phase separation in the polymer systems. The addition of salt exhibited a plasticizing effect localized to the polyionic liquid (PIL) phase, resulting in an increased ionic conductivity in the binary electrolytes. Introducing the IL further enhanced the plasticizing effect, elevating the ionic conductivity in the ternary system. Spectroscopic analysis, for the first time, revealed that the incorporation of NaFSI and IL influences the conformation of TFSI- and weakens the interaction between TFSI- and the polymer. This establishes correlations between anions and Na+, ultimately enhancing the diffusivity of Na ions. The electrochemical properties of an optimized SPE in Na/Na symmetrical cells were investigated, showcasing stable Na plating/stripping at high current densities up to 0.7 mA cm-2, maintaining its integrity at 70 °C. Furthermore, we evaluated the performance of a Na|NaFePO4 cell cycled at different rates (C/10 and C/5) and temperatures (50 and 70 °C), revealing remarkable high-capacity retention and Coulombic efficiency. This study highlights the potential of solvent-free diblock copolymer electrolytes for high-performance sodium-based energy storage systems, contributing to advanced electrolyte materials.

Abstract
Flexible quasi-solid-state sodium ion batteries featuring their low-cost, high safety and excellent mechanical strength have attracted widespread interest in the field of wearable electronic devices. However, the development of such batteries faces great challenges including the construction of interfacial compatible flexible electrode materials and addressing the high safety demands of electrolyte. Here selenium-vacancies regulated bimetallic selenide heterojunctions anchored on waste cotton cloth-derived flexible carbon cloth (FCC) with robust interfacial C-Se-Co/Fe chemical bonds as a flexible anode material (CCFSF) is proposed by ultrafast microwave pyrolysis method. Rich selenium vacancies and CoSe2 /FeSe2-x heterostructures are synchronously formed that can significantly improve ionic and electronic diffusion kinetics. Additionally, a uniform carbon layer coating on the surface of Se-deficient heterostructures endows it with outstanding structural stability. The flexible cathode (PB@FCC) is also fabricated by directly growing Prussian blue nanoparticles on the FCC. Furthermore, an advanced flexible quasi-solid-state Na-ion pouch cell is assembled by coupling CCFSF anode, PB@FCC cathode with P(VDF-HFP)-based gel polymer electrolyte. The full cell not only demonstrates excellent energy storage performance but also robust mechanical flexibility and safety. The present work offers an effective avenue to achieve high safety flexible energy storage device, promoting the development of flexible wearable electronic devices.

Abstract
Transition metal selenides are considered as promising anode materials for fast-charging sodium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical specific capacity. However, the low intrinsic conductivity, particle aggregation, and large volume expansion problems can severely inhibit the high-rate and long-cycle performance of the electrode. Herein, FeSe2nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (FeSe2@NCF) have been synthesized using the electrospinning and selenization process, which can alleviate the volume expansion and particle aggregation during the sodiation/desodiation and improve the electrical conductivity of the electrode. The FeSe2@NCF electrode delivers the outstanding specific capacity of 222.3 mAh g-1at a fast current density of 50 A g-1and 262.1 mAh g-1at 10 A g-1with the 87.8% capacity retention after 5000 cycles. Furthermore, the Na-ion full cells assembled with pre-sodiated FeSe2@NCF as anode and Na3V2(PO4)3/C as cathode exhibit the reversible specific capacity of 117.6 mAh g-1at 5 A g-1with the 84.3% capacity retention after 1000 cycles. This work provides a promising way for the conversion-based metal selenides for the applications as fast-charging sodium-ion battery anode.

Abstract
Herein, a well-designed hierarchical architecture of bimetallic transition sulfide FeIn2S4 nanoparticles anchoring on the Ti3C2 MXene flakes has been prepared by cation exchange and subsequent high-temperature sulfidation processes. The introduction of MXene substrate with excellent conductivity not only accelerates the migration rate of Na+ to achieve fast reaction dynamics but provides abundant deposition sites for the FeIn2S4 nanoparticles. In addition, this hierarchical structure of MXene@FeIn2S4 can effectively restrain the accumulation of MXene to guarantee the maximized exposure of redox active sites into the electrolyte, and simultaneously relieve the volume expansion in the repeated discharging/charging processes. The MXene@FeIn2S4 displays outstanding rate capability (448.2 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1) and stable long cycling performance (428.1 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 after 200 cycles). Moreover, the Nay-In6S7 phase detected by ex-situ XRD and XPS characterization may be regarded as a "buffer" to maintain the stability of the Fe-based components and enhance the reversibility of the electrochemical reaction. This work confirms the practicability of constructing the hierarchical structure bimetallic sulfides with the promising electrochemical performance.

Abstract
Herein, heterogeneous bimetallic sulfides Bi2S3/Mo7S8 nanoparticles anchored on MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanosheets (MXene@Bi2S3/Mo7S8) were prepared through a solvothermal process and subsequent chemical vapor deposition process. Benefiting from the heterogeneous structure between Bi2S3 and Mo7S8 and the high conductivity of the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, the Na+ diffusion barrier and charge transfer resistance of this electrode are effectively decreased. Simultaneously, the hierarchical architectures of Bi2S3/Mo7S8 and Ti3C2Tx not only effectively inhibit the re-stacking of MXene and the agglomeration of bimetallic sulfides nanoparticles, but also dramatically relieve the volume expansion during the periodic charge/discharge processes. As a result, the MXene@Bi2S3/Mo7S8 heterostructure demonstrated remarkable rate capability (474.9 mAh/g at 5.0 A/g) and outstanding cycling stability (427.3 mAh/g after 1400 cycles at 1.0 A/g) for sodium ion battery. The Na+ storage mechanism and the multiple-step phase transition in the heterostructures are further clarified by the ex-situ XRD and XPS characterizations. This study paves a new way to design and exploit conversion/alloying type anodes of sodium ion batteries with hierarchical heterogeneous architecture and high-performance electrochemical properties.

Abstract
The open NASICON framework and high reversible capacity enable Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) to be a highly promising cathode candidate for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Nevertheless, the unsatisfied cyclic stability and degraded rate capability at low temperatures due to sluggish ionic migration and poor conductivity become the main challenges. Herein, excellent sodium storage performance for the NVP cathode can be received by partial potassium (K) substitution and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) cross-linking to modify the ionic diffusion and electronic conductivity. Consequently, the as-fabricated Na3-xKxV2(PO4)3@C/MWCNT can maintain a capacity retention of 79.4% after 2000 cycles at 20 C. Moreover, the electrochemical tests at -20 °C manifest that the designed electrode can deliver 89.7, 73.5, and 64.8% charge of states, respectively, at 1, 2, and 3 C, accompanied with a capacity retention of 84.3% after 500 cycles at 20 C. Generally, the improved electronic conductivity and modified ionic diffusion kinetics resulting from K doping and MWCNT interconnecting endows the resultant Na3-xKxV2(PO4)3@C/MWCNT with modified electrochemical polarization and improved redox reversibility, contributing to superior performance at low temperatures. Generally, this study highlights the potential of alien substitution and carbon hybridization to improve the NASICON-type cathodes toward high-performance SIBs, especially at low temperatures.

Abstract
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have received increasing attention because of their appealing cell voltages and cost-effective features. However, the atom aggregation and electrode volume variation inevitably deteriorate the sodium storage kinetics. Here a new strategy is proposed to boost the lifetime of SIB by synthesizing sea urchin-like FeSe2 /nitrogen-doped carbon (FeSe2 /NC) composites. The robust FeN coordination hinders the Fe atom aggregation and accommodates the volume expansion, while the unique biomorphic morphology and high conductivity of FeSe2 /NC enhance the intercalation/deintercalation kinetics and shorten the ion/electron diffusion length. As expected, FeSe2 /NC electrodes deliver excellent half (387.6 mAh g-1 at 20.0 A g-1 after 56 000 cycles) and full (203.5 mAh g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 after 1200 cycles) cell performances. Impressively, an ultralong lifetime of SIB composed of FeSe2 /Fe3 Se4 /NC anode is uncovered with the cycle number exceeding 65 000. The sodium storage mechanism is clarified with the aid of density function theory calculations and in situ characterizations. This work hereby provides a new paradigm for enhancing the lifetime of SIB by constructing a unique coordination environment between active material and framework.

Abstract
A superior composite material consisting of MXene and ruthenium dioxide-modified carbon cloth is synthesized by pulsed laser deposition and electrostatic self-assembly, which is further utilized to construct a class of novel electrochemical (EC) sensors for kaempferol (KA) detection. The carbon-cloth-based electrodes modified by ruthenium dioxide and then MXene are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The EC process on the modified electrodes is analyzed by cyclic voltammetry, EC impedance spectroscopy, and differential pulse voltammetry. It is found that positively charged RuO2 not only possesses the remarkable electrical conductivity and electrocatalysis activity but also hampers the restacking of MXene, which accordingly enhances the exposure of the active surface area and greatly boosts the electrocatalysis activity of the entire composite. Consequently, this newly developed composite-based EC sensor exhibits a high sensitivity, selectivity, and remarkable stability to detect KA with two linear ranges of 0.06-1 and 1-15 µM. The inferred limit of detection is 0.039 µM via differential pulse voltammetry. More importantly, this novel EC sensor is found to be applicable for detecting KA in practical traditional Chinese medicines.

Abstract
Due to the upstream pressure of lithium resources, low-cost sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have become the most potential candidates for energy storage systems in the new era. However, anode materials of SIBs have always been a major problem in their development. To address this, V2 C/Fe7 S8 @C composites with hierarchical structures prepared via an in situ synthesis method are proposed here. The 2D V2 C-MXene as the growth substrate for Fe7 S8 greatly improves the rate capability of SIBs, and the carbon layer on the surface provides a guarantee for charge-discharge stability. Unexpectedly, the V2 C/Fe7 S8 @C anode achieves satisfactory sodium storage capacity and exceptional rate performance (389.7 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 ). The sodium storage mechanism and origin of composites are thoroughly studied via ex situ characterization techniques and first-principles calculations. Furthermore, the constructed sodium-ion capacitor assembled with N-doped porous carbon delivers excellent energy density (135 Wh kg-1 ) and power density (11 kW kg-1 ), showing certain practical value. This work provides an advanced system of sodium storage anode materials and broadens the possibility of MXene-based materials in the energy storage.

Abstract
Cobalt selenide, as a star material in battery industry, has attracted much attention. However, when it is applied solely in sodium ion batteries, it will cause large volume expansion and material agglomeration, which will seriously affect the overall performance of batteries. In this work, we use ice bath impregnation to combine CoSe2 nanoparticles with porous nitrogen-doped carbon networks (NC) as advanced anodes for ultra-long cycle life sodium ion batteries (SIBs). CoSe2 nanoparticles are evenly attached to NC with strong interfacial contacts in CoSe2@NC. The strong contact of CoSe2 on the porous carbon network, along with the carbon network's unique network cross-linking structure, results in rapid electron transfer and Na ion diffusion kinetics of CoSe2@NC, resulting in superior electrochemical performance. Besides, we have synthesized CoSe2@NC with different loading by changing Co2+ concentration. The results show that CoSe2@NC anode thus provides a high reversible capacity of 406 mAh/g. In addition, at high current 5 A/g, it can keep a reversible capacity of 300 mAh/g after 4500 cycles with an average capacity loss of less than 0.01 % per cycle. The excellent anchoring structure enables it to form stable solid electrolyte film (SEI) and reduce the amount of dead sodium in the first charge-discharge process, showing high Initial Coulombic Efficiency (ICE) (89.2 %). Finally, CoSe2@NC and Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) are assembled into a full cell and the results shows an ultra-long cycle stability at 0.1 A/g. This strategy will facilitate the application of transition metal selenides in next-generation energy storage systems.

Abstract
The fast electrochemical kinetics behavior and long cycling life have been the goals in developing anode materials for potassium ion batteries (PIBs). On account of high electron conductivity and theoretical capacity, transition metal selenides have been deemed as one of the promising anode materials for PIBs. Herein, a systematic structural manipulation strategy, pertaining to the confine of Fe3 Se4 particles by 3D graphene and the dual phosphorus (P) doping to the Fe3 Se4 /3DG (DP-Fe3 Se4 /3DG), has been proposed to fulfill the efficient potassium-ion (K-ion) evolution kinetics and thus boost the K-ion storage performance. The theoretical calculation results demonstrate that the well-designed dual P doping interface can effectively promote K-ion adsorption behavior and provide a low energy barrier for K-ion diffusion. The insertion-conversion and adsorption mechanism for multi potassium storage behavior in DP-Fe3 Se4 /3DG composite has been also deciphered by combining the in situ/ex situ X-ray diffraction and operando Raman spectra evidences. As expected, the DP-Fe3 Se4 /3DG anode exhibits superior rate capability (120.2 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1 ) and outstanding cycling performance (157.9 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles at 5 A g-1 ).

Abstract
MXenes are seen as an exceptional candidate to reshape the future of energy with their viable surface chemistry, ultrathin 2D structure, and excellent electronic conductivity. The extensive research efforts bring about rapid expansion of the MXene families with enriched functionalities, which significantly boost performance of the existing energy-storage devices. In this review, the strategies that are developed to functionalize the MXene-based materials, including tailoring their microstructure by ions/molecules/polymers-initiated interaction or self-assembly, surface/interface engineering with dopants or functional groups, constructing heterostructures from MXenes with various materials, and transforming them into a series of derivatives inheriting the merits of the MXene precursors are highlighted. Their applications in emerging battery technologies are demonstrated and discussed. With delicate functionalization and structural engineering, MXene-based electrode materials exhibit improved specific capacity and rate capability, and their presence further suppresses and even eliminates dendrite formation on the metal anodes, which lengthens the lifespan of the rechargeable batteries. Meanwhile, MXenes serve as additives for electrolytes, separators, and current collectors. Finally, some future directions worth of exploration to address the remaining challenging issues of MXene-based materials and achieve the next-generation high-power and low-cost rechargeable batteries are proposed.

Abstract
The unique properties of MXenes have been deemed to be of significant interest in various emerging applications. However, MXenes provide a major drawback involving environmentally harmful and toxic substances for its general fabrication in large-scale production and employing a high-temperature solid-state reaction followed by selective etching. Meanwhile, how MXenes are synthesized is essential in directing their end uses. Therefore, making strategic approaches to synthesize greener, safer, more sustainable, and more environmentally friendly MXenes is imperative to commercialize at a competitive price. With increasing reports of green synthesis that promote advanced technologies and non-toxic agents, it is critical to compile, summarize, and synthesize the latest development of the green-related technology of MXenes. We review the recent progress of greener, safer, and more sustainable MXene synthesis with a focus on the fundamental synthetic process, the mechanism, and the general advantages, and the emphasis on the MXene properties inherited from such green synthesis techniques. The emerging use of the so-called green MXenes in energy conversion and storage, environmental remediation, and biomedical applications is presented. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects of greener MXene synthesis are discussed.

Abstract
With rapid development and broad application of MXenes, it is important to dedicate efforts to explore the preparation of MXenes from MAX phases, owing to the strict policies of energy conservation and environmental protection. Therefore, a new synthesis strategy for MXenes through ionic-liquid-based microemulsions was proposed successfully for the first time here. Because of the unique interface reaction feature of microemulsions, it could improve the etching conditions of MAX phases, thereby enhancing the reaction efficiency. Effects of the temperature, acid, and ionic liquid species on the etching reaction were investigated in detail. MXenes were prepared successfully within 24 h through 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate- or 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate-based microemuslions at a temperature of 30 °C and pH of 0.3. MXenes with or without annealed treatment were used to make supercapacitor electrodes for evaluating their electrochemical performances. In comparison to unannealed MXenes, the specific capacitance of annealed MXenes was higher, owing to the lower resistance. The optimal MXenes exhibited a specific capacitance of 46.5 F/g at a current density of 40 mA/g and high stability after 500 charge/discharge cycles (100 mA/g), which is comparable to other reports. Through this work, it can open a new window for the preparation of MXenes, which helps to further promote their development and application in research of electrode materials.

Abstract
1T-phase MoS2 is a promising electrode material for electrochemical energy storage due to its metallic conductivity, abundant active sites, and high theoretical capacity. However, because of the habitual conversion of metastable 1T to stable 2H phase via restacking, the poor rate capacity and cycling stability at high current densities hamper their applications. Herein, a synergetic effect of electron-injection engineering and atomic-interface engineering is employed for the formation and stabilization of defected 1T-rich MoS2 nanoflowers. The 1T-rich MoS2 and carbon monolayers are alternately intercalated with each other in the nanohybrids. The metallic 1T-phase MoS2 and conductive carbon monolayers are favorable for charge transport. The expanded interlayer spacing ensures fast electrolyte diffusion and the decrease of the ion diffusion barrier. The obtained defected 1T-rich MoS2/m-C nanoflowers exhibit high Na-storage capacity (557 mAh g-1 after 80 cycles at 0.1 A g-1), excellent rate capacity (411 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1), and long-term cycling performance (364 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g-1). Furthermore, a Na-ion full cell composed of the 1T-rich MoS2/m-C anode and Na3V2(PO4)3/C cathode maintains excellent cycling stability at 0.5 A g-1 during 400 cycles. Theoretical calculations are also performed to evaluate the phase stability, electronic conductivity, and Na+ diffusion behavior of 1T-rich MoS2/m-C. The energy storage performance demonstrates its excellent application prospects.

Abstract
When utilized in energy devices, the restacking tendency of MXene Ti3C2Tx inhibits its electrochemical performance. Using aerosol jet printing (AJP) technology, hybrid Ti3C2Tx/C nanospheres are synthesized with C nanoparticle-bonded MXene nanosheets, and the restacking of MXene nanosheets is blocked efficiently. The formation mechanism for hybrid Ti3C2Tx/C nanospheres has been hypothesized, and the Ti3C2Tx/C is anticipated to assemble and shape along the droplet surface in tandem with the Marangoni flow within the droplet. The planar microsupercapacitor devices generated from these hybrid spherical nanostructures with increased interlayer spacing exhibit exceptional areal capacitance performance. This concept offers a straightforward and effective method for constructing 3D-structured MXene with suppressed self-stacking for diverse high-performance micro energy storage devices.

Abstract
Magnesium-ion batteries (MIB) have gradually attracted attention owing to their high theoretical capacity, high safety, and low cost. A bimetallic metal-organic framework self-sacrificing template and a co-assembly strategy are used to prepare a high-performance, stable cycling NiSe2 -CoSe2 @TiVCTx (NCSe@TiVC) heterostructure MIB cathode that can be used as a flexible integrated unit to power future self-powered systems. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of TiVCTx MXene and NCSe, the NCSe@TiVC heterostructure electrode has a discharge-specific capacity of 136 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A g-1 and high cycling stability of over 500 cycles; the assembled pouch-cell device as flexible integrated unit exhibits good practicability. The magnesium ion storage mechanism is also validated using quantitative kinetic analysis, ex situ XRD, and XPS techniques. Density functional theory analysis indicates the most stable Mg-atom adsorption sites in the heterostructure. This study broadens the possibilities for applying the TiVCTx MXene heterostructure to energy storage materials and future self-powered flexible systems.

Abstract
Heteroatom doping effectively tunes the electronic conductivity of transition metal selenides (TMSs) with rapid K+ accessibility in potassium ion batteries (PIBs). Although considerable efforts are dedicated to investigating the relationship between the doping strategy and the resulting electrochemistry, the doping mechanisms, especially in view of the ion and electronic diffusion kinetics upon cycling, are seldom elucidated systematically. Herein, the crystal structure stability, charge/ion state, and bandgap of the active materials are found to be precisely modulated by favorable heteroatom doping, resulting in intrinsically fast kinetics of the electrode materials. Based on the combined mechanisms of intercalation and conversion reactions, electron and K+ ion transfer in Ni-doped CoSe2 embedded in carbon nanocomposites (Ni-CoSe2 @NC) can be significantly enhanced via electronic engineering. Benefiting from the synthetic controlled Ni grains, the heterointerface formed by the intermediate products of electrochemical reactions in Ni-CoSe2 @NC strengthens the conversion kinetics and interdiffusion process, developing a low-barrier mesophase with optimized potassium storage. Overall, an electronic tuning strategy can offer deeper atomic insights into the conversion reaction of TMSs in PIBs.

Abstract
Titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) is highly regarded as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries but suffers from sluggish kinetics with low storage capacity. In this work, a BN/Ti3C2Tx heterostructure is effectively fabricated by high energy ball-milling, which plays a series of roles in enlarging the interlayer spacing, reducing the size of the nanosheets and maintaining the structural integrity. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between the BN and Ti3C2Tx monolayers, it delivers a high reversible capacity of 521.6 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, excellent rate capabilities (344.9 mA h g-1 at 1 A g-1 and 251.3 mA h g-1 at 2.5 A g-1) and a robust long-term cycling stability with 84.4% capacity retention after 1400 cycles. In particular, the theoretical calculations further confirm that the BN/Ti3C2Tx heterostructure manifests improved adsorption energies, an ultralow diffusion barrier and a high charge-discharge rate. These findings provide an important new strategy for further design and rational fabrication of MXenes for energy storage applications.

Abstract
Potassium (K)-based batteries are viewed as the most promising alternatives to lithium-based batteries, owing to their abundant potassium resource, lower redox potentials (-2.97 V vs. SHE), and low cost. Recently, significant achievements on electrode materials have boosted the development of potassium-based batteries. However, the poor interfacial compatibility between electrode and electrolyte hinders their practical. Hence, rational design of electrolyte/electrode interface by electrolytes is the key to develop K-based batteries. In this review, the principles for formulating organic electrolytes are comprehensively summarized. Then, recent progress of various liquid organic and solid-state K+ electrolytes for potassium-ion batteries and beyond are discussed. Finally, we offer the current challenges that need to be addressed for advanced K-based batteries.

Abstract
Conjugated quinones are promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. However, the contemporary primary conjugated quinones cathodes still hold to limited capacity, poor rate performance and low cyclability, due to the poor electronic and ionic conductivity. Herein, a series of high-performance conjugated-quinones@MXene hybrid cathodes is constructed by an in situ polymerization-assembly strategy based on the hydrogen bond and S-Ti interaction. The PAQS@Ti3C2Tx MXene hybrid, as a typical example, exhibits sandwiched structure with intimate PAQS@MXene contact, resulting in efficient interfacial mass transfer. The assembled MXene is able to build interconnected conductive channels in the hybrid cathodes for continuous and fast electrons/ions transport, which is verified by both the experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. As a result, the optimal PAQS@MXene hybrid electrode delivers excellent electrochemical performances with high capacity (∼242 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1), superior fast-charge/discharge ability (∼148 and 121 mA h g-1 at 5 and 10 A g-1, respectively), and ultralong cycle life (capacity as high as 57 mA h g-1 after 9000 cycles at 5 A g-1), which are more superior to that of the pure PAQS electrodes. Besides, the analogous PPTS@Ti3C2Tx MXene hybrid cathode also shows better performances compared to the pure materials.

Abstract
The high theoretical capacity makes metal phosphides appropriate anode candidates for Li-ion batteries, but their applications are restricted due to the limited structural instability caused by the huge volume change, as in other high-capacity materials. Here, we design an integrated electrode consisting of Sn4P3 nanoparticles sandwiched between transition-metal carbide (MXene) nanosheets. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH) plays an essential role in the formation of such sandwich structures by producing negatively charged MXene sheets with expanded layer spacings. The strong C-O-P oxygen bridge bond enables tight anchoring of Sn4P3 nanoparticles on the surface of MXene layers. The obtained Sn4P3-based nanocomposites exhibit high reversible capacity with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 82% and outstanding rate performance (1519 mAh cm-3 at a current density of 5 A g-1). The conductive and flexible MXene layers on both sides of Sn4P3 nanoparticles provide the desired electric conductivity and elastomeric space to accommodate the large volume change of Sn4P3 during lithiation. Therefore, the Sn4P3@MXene hybrid exhibits an enhanced cyclic performance of 820 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles at a current density of 1 A g-1.

Abstract
Although electrodes based on two dimensional hybrids with interstratification-assemble have been widely studied for supercapacitors, the performance enhancement still remains challenge mainly due to the random dispersion of surface passivated two dimensional nanosheets. Herein, a new covalent surface functionalization of MXene-based Ti3C2Cl2 nanodots-interspersed MXene@NiAl-layered double hydroxides (QD-Ti3C2Cl2@NiAl-LDHs) hybrid electrode with superior pseudocapacitor storage performance has been elaborately designed by electrostatic-assembled. As a result, the QD-Ti3C2Cl2@NiAl-LDHs electrode exhibits a super specific capacitance of 2010.8F g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 and high energy density of 100.5 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 299.8 W kg-1. In addition, 94.1% capacitance retention is achieved after cycling for 10,000 cycles at 1.0 A g-1, outperforming previously reported of two dimensional hybrids electrode for supercapacitor. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the superior pseudocapacitor storage performance of the QD-Ti3C2Cl2@NiAl-LDHs may be attributed to the creation of numerous electrochemical active sites and the enhancement of electrical conductivity by the QD-Ti3C2Cl2 MXene. This work provides new strategy for developing excellent pseudocapacitor supercapacitor based on two dimensional hybrid electrode.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) MXenes are promising as electrode materials for energy storage, owing to their high electronic conductivity and low diffusion barrier. Unfortunately, similar to most 2D materials, MXene nanosheets easily restack during the electrode preparation, which degrades the electrochemical performance of MXene-based materials. A novel synthetic strategy is proposed for converting MXene into restacking-inhibited three-dimensional (3D) balls coated with iron selenides and carbon. This strategy involves the preparation of Fe2O3@carbon/MXene microspheres via a facile ultrasonic spray pyrolysis and subsequent selenization process. Such 3D structuring effectively prevents interlayer restacking, increases the surface area, and accelerates ion transport, while maintaining the attractive properties of MXene. Furthermore, combining iron selenides and carbon with 3D MXene balls offers many more sites for ion storage and enhances the structural robustness of the composite balls. The resultant 3D structured microspheres exhibit a high reversible capacity of 410 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g-1 in potassium-ion batteries, corresponding to the capacity retention of 97% as calculated based on 100 cycles. Even at a high current density of 5.0 A g-1, the composite exhibits a discharge capacity of 169 mAh g-1.
