Abstract
Aging is associated with a progressive decline of innate and adaptive immune responses, called immunosenescence. This phenomenon links to different multiple sclerosis (MS) disease courses among different age groups. While clinical relapse and active demyelination are mainly related to the altered adaptive immunity, including invasion of T- and B-lymphocytes, impairment of innate immune cell (e.g., microglia, astrocyte) function is the main contributor to disability progression and neurodegeneration. Most patients with MS manifest the relapsing-remitting phenotype at a younger age, while progressive phenotypes are mainly seen in older patients. Current disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) primarily targeting adaptive immunity are less efficacious in older patients, suggesting that immunosenescence plays a role in treatment response. This review summarizes the recent immune mechanistic studies regarding immunosenescence in patients with MS and discusses the clinical implications of these findings.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Aging is a natural process involving dysfunction of multiple organs and is characterized by increased susceptibility to infections, cancer and autoimmune diseases. The functionality of the immune system depends on the capacity of lymphocytes to proliferate in response to antigenic challenges, and telomere length has an important role regulating the number of cell divisions. The aim of this study was to determine the possible relationship between telomere length, interleukin 2 (IL-2) production, CD25 expression and proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in aged men. MATERIAL AND METHODS Telomere length was measured by RT-PCR in PBMCs from young and aged men. IL-2 production and CD25 expression were determined by ELISA and flow cytometry, respectively. Cell proliferation was measured by CFSE dilution assays upon in vitro stimulation with concanavalin A (Con A). RESULTS PBMCs from aged men showed a shorter telomere length and a reduced capacity to proliferate in vitro, compared to young men. In contrast, no significant differences in the level of CD25 expression on T lymphocytes, and in vitro production of IL-2 were detected in both groups. In addition, no significant correlation was detected between levels of CD25 expression, IL-2 production, cell proliferation, and telomere length in aged men. CONCLUSIONS In aged men the telomere length shortening and the reduced T cell proliferation are not related to the capacity of IL-2 production and CD25 expression on T lymphocytes.

Abstract
The age-specific reference values for immunoglobulin (Ig) serum concentrations in European bison (Bison bonasus) are lacking. Identification of immune alterations that accompany normal physiological aging will help assist in development of better monitoring health programs. In the present study, the age-associated changes in concentration of IgG, IgM, and IgA in serum of apparently healthy European bison of various ages were studied. The quantities of IgA, IgM, and IgG were measured by the use of a commercial ELISA kit. The serum samples originating from apparently healthy European bison (n = 206) were divided into the following age categories: (1) <1 year of age; (2) animals between 1 and 3 years of age; and (3) animals which have reached sexual maturity: (3a) animals between 4 and 8 years of age, (3b) animals between 9 and 15 years of age, and (3c) animals > 15 years of age. IgG was found to be predominant Ig in the serum regardless of the age of the animals. The significant positive correlation between IgG absolute and relative concentration and the age of animals was found. The absolute concentration of IgM did not differ significantly during the lifespan; however, the negative correlation was observed between percentage of IgM and European bison's age. IgA represented the least class of serum Ig. Total serum concentration of analyzed Ig also significantly increased with age. No gender-related differences were detected. Our findings represent a meaningful contribution to the studies on the immunity of European bison and effect of age on the immunoglobulin level. Our results would be useful for veterinarians and researchers in the studies with this animal's species.

Abstract
Penile prosthesis infection is the most significant complication following prosthesis implant surgery leading to postoperative morbidity, increased health care costs, and psychological stress for the patient. We aimed to identify risk factors associated with increased postoperative penile prosthesis infection. A review of the literature was performed via PubMed using search terms including inflatable penile prosthesis, penile implant, and infection. Articles were given a level of evidence score using the 2011 Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Guidelines. Multiple factors were associated with increased risk of post-prosthesis placement infection (Level of Evidence Rating) including smoking tobacco (Level 1), CD4 T-cell count <300 (Level 4), Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriage (Level 2), revision surgery (Level 2), prior spinal cord injury (Level 3), and hemoglobin A1c level >8.5 (Level 2). Factors with no effect on infection rate include: preoperative cleansing with antiseptic (Level 4), history of prior radiation (Level 3), history of urinary diversion (Level 4), obesity (Level 3), concomitant circumcision (Level 3), immunosuppression (Level 4), age >75 (Level 4), type of hand cleansing (Level 1), post-surgical drain placement (Level 3), and surgical approach (Level 4). Factors associated with decreased rates of infection included: surgeon experience (Level 2), "No Touch" technique (Level 3), preoperative parenteral antibiotics (Level 2), antibiotic coated devices (Level 2), and operative field hair removal with clippers (Level 1). Optimization of pre-surgical and intraoperative risk factors is imperative to reduce the rate of postoperative penile prosthesis infection. Additional research is needed to elucidate risk factors and maximize benefit.

Abstract
CD4+ T cells are important for generating high quality and robust immune responses to influenza infection. Immunosenescence that occurs with aging, however, compromises the ability of CD4+ T cells to differentiate into functional subsets resulting in a multitude of dysregulated responses namely, delayed viral clearance and prolonged inflammation leading to increased pathology. Current research employing animal models and human subjects has provided new insights into the description and mechanisms of age-related CD4+ T cell changes. In this review, we will discuss the consequences of aging on CD4+ T cell differentiation and function and how this influences the initial CD4+ T cell effector responses to influenza infection. Understanding these age-related alterations will aid in the pharmacological development of therapeutic treatments and improved vaccination strategies for the vulnerable elderly population.

Prediction of Early BK Virus Infection in Kidney Transplant Recipients by the Number of Cells With Intranuclear Inclusion Bodies (Decoy Cells). Transplant Direct 2018; 4:e340. Abstract
Background BK virus (BKV) is the cause of nephropathy. Because BKV nephropathy can progress to graft loss, early diagnosis of BKV infection is very important. In this study, we aimed to investigate the utility of quantifying cells with intranuclear inclusion bodies (decoy cells) in urinary sediment for the screening and monitoring of BKV infection in renal transplant recipients at our hospital. Methods This was a retrospective single-center study. Urine sediment examination was performed at each outpatient visit, and the number of decoy cells was measured in the whole microscopic field. Patients (n = 41) were divided into the BK viremia group (blood positive for BKV DNA by polymerase chain reaction [PCR]) and non-BK viremia group (blood negative for BKV DNA by PCR), and the decoy cell count in urinary sediments was examined. Results The maximum decoy cell count was significantly higher (P = 0.04) in the BK viremia group than in the non-BK viremia group. In the receiver operating characteristic curve for the maximum decoy cells, the cutoff value was 507 cells. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.8774 (95% confidence interval, 0.7739-0.9810). The number of decoy cells at the time of appearance in the BK viremia group was not significantly different from that in the non-BK viremia group. However, the BK viremia group showed an increasing trend, whereas the non-BK viremia group showed a decreasing trend, in the number of decoy cells. There was a positive correlation between the number of decoy cells and the data from the urine BKV-DNA PCR quantification (correlation coefficient [r] = 0.74). Conclusions Measurement of decoy cells in urinary sediments may predict early BKV infection, and if performed quickly, it may be useful for screening and continuous monitoring of BKV infection in renal transplant recipients.

Abstract
Background Hymenoptera venom immunotherapy (VIT) is a clinically effective treatment. However, little is known about its long-term clinical efficacy and biological effects. Several mechanisms have been proposed to account for VIT efficacy, including reduction of specific IgE and induction of allergen-specific IgG4, but the overall picture remains elusive. We investigated Vespula VIT clinical efficacy up to 8 years after discontinuation and the kinetics of Vespula-specific IgE and IgG4. Out of 686 consecutive patients we retrospectively selected and analysed a series of 23 patients with Vespula allergy that underwent a 5-year IT course, followed by a prolonged follow-up. Methods Clinical efficacy of VIT was assessed as number and severity of reactions to Vespula re-stinging events. The presence of Vespula-specific IgE and IgG4 was also monitored over time. Results During the VIT treatment, patients were protected, reporting no reactions or mild reactions in occasion of re-stinging events. This protection was entirely maintained during the follow-up, up to 8 years. Skin reactivity (reflecting mast cell-bound Vespula-specific IgE) and circulating Vespula-specific IgE levels declined substantially during VIT. Notably, this reduction was maintained over time during the follow-up. Moreover, all the patients were analysed for IgG4. A robust induction of Vespula-specific IgG4 was observed during the VIT course, with a substantial decline during the follow-up. Conclusions We conclude that Vespula VIT is a clinically effective treatment, which induces long-term protection after discontinuation. The reduction of specific IgE, assessed by skin tests and RAST, closely matches the VIT- induced protection, while the IgG4 induction seems not to be associated with VIT clinical efficacy in the long term. Abstract
Aging is a complex, multifactorial process with significant plasticity. While several biological pathways appear to influence aging, few genes have been identified that are both evolutionarily conserved and have a strong impact on aging and age-related phenotypes. The FoxO3 gene (FOXO3), and its homologs in model organisms, appears especially important, forming a key gene in the insulin/insulin-like growth factor-signaling pathway, and influencing life span across diverse species. We highlight some of the key findings that are associated with FoxO3 protein, its gene and homologs in relation to lifespan in different species, and the insights these findings might provide about the molecular, cellular, and physiological processes that modulate aging and longevity in humans.

Abstract
We analyzed age-related defects in B cell populations from young and aged mice. Microarray analysis of bone marrow resident antibody secreting cells (ASCs) showed significant changes upon aging, affecting multiple genes, pathways and functions including those that play a role in immune regulation, humoral immune responses, chromatin structure and assembly, cell metabolism and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response. Further analysis showed upon aging defects in energy production through glucose catabolism with reduced oxidative phosphorylation. In addition aged B cells had increased levels of reactive oxygen-species (ROS), which was linked to enhanced expression of the co-inhibitor programmed cell death (PD)-1.

Abstract
AIM Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of morbidity and incapacity in the elderly. This study evaluates serum levels of the chemokines CCL2, CXCL8, CXCL9, and CXCL10 in 16 patients with primary OA of the knees, and investigates how treatment with hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) for 4 months affects these chemokine levels. METHOD Thirteen elderly patients received a placebo. Healthy control groups consisted of 10 elderly individuals (age > 60 years) with no clinical or radiological evidence of OA (CT-O), and 10 young adult individuals, (CT-Y group, age < 40 years). RESULTS The CT-Y group presented lower levels of all chemokines studied, in comparison to the other groups. HCQ treatment did not alter the serum levels of CCL2 (P = 0.80), CXCL8 (P = 0.76), CXCL9 (P = 0.95) and CXCL10 (P = 0.74) in OA patients. CONCLUSION Hydroxychloroquine treatment did not alter the serum levels of CCL2, CXCL8, CXCL9 or CXCL10 in patients with OA of the knees, although increased serum levels correlated with aging for all subjects, including controls.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS The thiopurine drugs, azathioprine (AZA), and 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) are well-established drugs for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Although leukopenia is a well-recognized side effect of AZA/6-MP treatment, its association with therapeutic effects has yet to be determined. We therefore evaluated the influences of thiopurine-induced leukopenia on the long-term prognosis of IBD. METHODS We included 196 IBD patients [45 with ulcerative colitis (UC), 68 with Crohn's disease (CD), and 83 with intestinal Behçet's disease (BD)] who were treated with AZA/6-MP and achieved remission between January 2006 and December 2012. We retrospectively analyzed patient characteristics, AZA/6-MP maintenance dose (mg/kg), the lowest white blood cell (WBC) count during AZA/6-MP treatment, duration of remission, and the occurrence of relapse. We compared the clinical variables between leukopenic (n = 120, WBC count <4,000/μL) and nonleukopenic (n = 76, WBC count ≥ 4,000/μL) patients. RESULTS The two groups were well matched for baseline clinical characteristics. The cumulative relapse-free survival rate was higher in the leukopenic group than the nonleukopenic group by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis (log-rank test, P < 0.001). On multivariate analysis, age, duration of AZA/6-MP treatment, presence of macrocytosis, and the presence of leukopenia were negatively associated with relapse (odds ratios 0.975, 0.988, 0.563, and 0.390, respectively). On subgroup analysis, the cumulative relapse-free survival rate was significantly higher in the leukopenic group than in the nonleukopenic group for all types of IBDs, including UC, CD, and intestinal BD (log-rank test, P = 0.032, 0.047, and 0.002, respectively). CONCLUSION Leukopenia during thiopurine maintenance therapy was associated with prolonged remission in patients with IBD and Behcet's disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Several contradictions and inconsistent reports regarding nature of dysfunction of immune system with age are known. The lack of multipoint age comparisons in immune functions contributes to the observed ambiguity in understanding immunosenescence. Thus, the present study aimed at a concurrent analysis of different immune cells in an attempt to delineate the nature of dysregulation with progressive aging in mice. METHODS 4, 8, 12 and 16 months old mice were analyzed for various immune parameters involving neutrophils, peripheral blood lymphocytes, peritoneal macrophages, splenocytes, inflamm-aging markers in plasma and humoral immune response in intestine. RESULTS Neutrophils registered a remarkable decrease in activities of respiratory burst enzymes and phagocytosis, while macrophages recorded a decrease in TLR-2 and TLR-4 expression. MCP-1 and CRP levels increased in plasma, whereas stimulation index and CD28 expression decreased in lymphocytes. Interleukins analysis (IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-10) showed a remarkable shift towards Th2 response which further resulted in increased IgG1/IgG2a ratio and IgE levels in intestine. CONCLUSION A decline in cell-mediated immune response, chronic inflammation and aggravation of humoral immunity was evident which conclusively suggests a skewed Th2 pathway during aging.

Abstract
Nucleic acid amplification test, age, race and sex are associated with increased community-associated Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) incidence, while age and number of inpatient-days are associated with increased healthcare-associated CDI incidence. Comparison of CDI incidence across regions should account for these factors. Background Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is no longer restricted to hospital settings, and population-based incidence measures are needed. Understanding the determinants of CDI incidence will allow for more meaningful comparisons of rates and accurate national estimates. Methods Data from active population- and laboratory-based CDI surveillance in 7 US states were used to identify CDI cases (ie, residents with positive C difficile stool specimen without a positive test in the prior 8 weeks). Cases were classified as community-associated (CA) if stool was collected as outpatients or ≤3 days of admission and no overnight healthcare facility stay in the past 12 weeks; otherwise, cases were classified as healthcare-associated (HA). Two regression models, one for CA-CDI and another for HA-CDI, were built to evaluate predictors of high CDI incidence. Site-specific incidence was adjusted based on the regression models. Results Of 10 062 cases identified, 32% were CA. Crude incidence varied by geographic area; CA-CDI ranged from 28.2 to 79.1/100 000 and HA-CDI ranged from 45.7 to 155.9/100 000. Independent predictors of higher CA-CDI incidence were older age, white race, female gender, and nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) use. For HA-CDI, older age and a greater number of inpatient-days were predictors. After adjusting for relevant predictors, the range of incidence narrowed greatly; CA-CDI rates ranged from 30.7 to 41.3/100 000 and HA-CDI rates ranged from 58.5 to 94.8/100 000. Conclusions Differences in CDI incidence across geographic areas can be partially explained by differences in NAAT use, age, race, sex, and inpatient-days. Variation in antimicrobial use may contribute to the remaining differences in incidence.

Abstract
Imbalance in Th1/Th2 immune pathways and cellular antioxidant systems with progressive aging are among the leading causes of increased risk of morbidity and mortality in elderly. Although probiotics have been considered to boost immune system, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis of probiotic effects on aging physiology. The present study aimed at determining anti-immunosenescence potential of milk fermented with probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LR) in 16 months old mice by concurrent analysis of immunosenescence markers associated with Th1/Th2 profile of splenocytes, inflamm-aging in plasma, neutrophil functions and antibody response in intestine along with analysis of antioxidant enzymes in liver and red blood cells (RBCs) after feeding trials of 1 and 2 months, respectively. An enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (ATCC 14948)-based infection model in aging mice was also designed to validate protective attributes of LR. Splenocytes registered increased IFN-γ and decreased IL-4 and IL-10 production in LR-fed animals. Neutrophil respiratory burst enzymes and phagocytosis increased significantly while no aggravation in plasma levels of MCP-1 and TNF-α was observed. Further, owing to increased Th1 response, antibodies registered a decrease in IgG1/IgG2a ratio and IgE levels in LR groups. No significant variations were observed in secretory IgA and IgA + cells in the intestine. Antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase) in LR-fed groups recorded increased activities which were more pronounced in the liver than in RBCs. LR supplementation significantly reduced E. coli translocation to organs (intestine, liver, spleen, peritoneal fluid) by enhancing E. coli-specific antibodies (IgA and IgG1) and inflammatory proteins. In conclusion, LR supplementation alleviated immunosenescence-associated Th1/Th2 imbalance, improved antioxidant capacity, and enhanced resistance of aged mice to E. coli infection thereby signifying its potential in augmenting healthy aging.

Abstract
Klebsiella pneumoniae necrotizing fasciitis is a rare infection in regions outside of Asia. Here, we present a case of necrotizing fasciitis of the leg caused by K. pneumoniae in a 92-year-old French woman hospitalized in a geriatric rehabilitation unit. The patient initially presented with dermohypodermitis of the leg that developed from a dirty wound following a fall. A few hours later, this painful injury extended to the entire lower limb, with purplish discoloration of the skin, bullae, and necrosis. Septic shock rapidly appeared and the patient died 9 hours after the onset of symptoms. The patient was Caucasian, with no history of travel to Asia or any underlying disease. Computed tomography revealed no infectious metastatic loci. Blood cultures showed growth of capsular serotype K2 K. pneumoniae strains with virulence factors RmpA, yersiniabactin and aerobactin. This rare and fatal case of necrotizing fasciitis caused by a virulent strain of K. pneumoniae occurred in a hospitalized elderly woman without risk factors. Clinicians and geriatricians in particular should be aware of this important albeit unusual differential diagnosis.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Dog bites in humans are a complex problem, embracing both public health and animal welfare. The primary aim of this study is to examine primary and secondary presentations related to dog bite injuries in adults. METHODS We retrospectively assessed all adult patients admitted with a dog bite injury to the Emergency Department of Bern University Hospital. RESULTS A total of 431 patients were eligible for the study. Forty-nine (11.4%) of all patients were admitted with secondary presentations. Bites to the hands were most common (177, 41.1%). All patients (47, 100%) with secondary presentations were admitted because of signs of infection. The median time since the dog bite was 3.8 days (SD 3.9, range 1-21). Thirty-one patients had already been treated with antibiotic; coamoxicillin was the most common primary antibiotic therapy (27/47 patients, 57.4%). Patients with injuries to the hand were at increased risk of secondary presentations (OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.21-3.55, P < 0.006). CONCLUSION Dog bite injuries to the hands are a major problem. They often lead to infectious complications. Immediate antibiotic therapy should carefully be evaluated for each patient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Although general guidelines have suggested weight-based dosing of azathioprine (AZA, 2.5 mg/kg/day) for Crohn's disease (CD), a substantial number of patients develop bone marrow suppression. The aim of this study was to evaluate the maximum dose of AZA not based on weight but titrated according to the lower limit of leukocyte count for maintaining remission in patients with CD. METHODS Among a total of seventy-eight patients with CD, who had been followed-up at Kosin University Gospel Hospital (Busan, Korea) from 2010 to 2011, those treated with the maximum dose of AZA meeting both drug-tolerability and leukocytes count of more than 4,000/mm3 for steroid-free maintaining remission were enrolled. The titrated maximum AZA dose and its relationship with weight were evaluated. RESULTS A total of 42 patients (male, 32 patients; mean age, 31 years) were enrolled. The maximum dose of AZA was 49.1 mg/day. The dose per weight was 0.87 mg/kg/day and negatively correlated with body weight (g=-0.51, p=0.01) and BMI (g=-0.33, p=0.034). AZA dose per weight in the below 40 years old group was significantly higher than that in the above 40 years old group (p=0.039). CONCLUSIONS Dose decision of AZA based only on weight could put the patients to inappropriately low or high dose resulting in need of additional therapy or serious side effect, respectively. Therefore, the maximum dose-titration based on the lower limit of leukocyte count and tolerability is a novel and a valuable strategy in deciding the dose of thiopurines.

Abstract
Background Patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD) have impaired cellular and humoral immunity. The percentage of elderly people among the total population in Taiwan is increasing dramatically, and HD is the primary alternative for renal replacement therapy when renal function declines. Activated vitamin D is widely used in HD patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) and is a well-known immunomodulatory agent. Personalized medicine and integrative medical approach has been a trend in current clinical practice. Can we improve their immune function using vitamin D in spite of the mineral aspect? Here, we investigated the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level and T cell differentiation in chronic HD patients. Methods Forty patients with chronic HD were enrolled. HD patients with SHPT had been treated with activated vitamin D for 3 months. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from the patients were cultured and stimulated by mitogens, and T cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. Serum 25(OH)D levels were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results The incidence of T cell differentiation to the T helper cell (Th)2 subtype was more prevalent in the elderly group than in the controls (p = 0.001). Th2 differentiation was also correlated with age (p = 0.004) and serum 25(OH)D levels (p < 0.05). After treated with activated vitamin D, the level of Th1 cytokines decreased while the Th2 cytokine level increased in the sera (p < 0.05). The T cell differentiation tended toward the Th2 subtype (p = 0.027) after treatment of activated vitamin D in SHPT patients. Conclusions These results demonstrated that Th2 differentiation is correlated with age and the serum 25(OH)D level of patients. Treatment with activated vitamin D influenced T cell differentiation and cytokine expression in SHPT patients. Taking vitamin D is the possible prediction and targeted treatment in the immune dysfunction in chronic HD patients.

Abstract
The elderly are less able to survive burn injury than young healthy individuals. Regardless of age, burn victims often succumb to secondary infections rather than the primary injury. Since immune responses diminish with age, it is likely that aged individuals are predisposed to a poor outcome by virtue of their weak immune system. Elevated production of macrophage-derived mediators, including interleukin-6 (IL-6), may lead to post-injury immunosuppression in young adults. Healthy aged individuals produce high circulating levels of these mediators; therefore, the combination of the age and burn trauma could further suppress immune responses and contribute to the rapid demise of aged burn patients. Herein, the effects of age and burn trauma using a murine scald injury model were examined. After injury, aged mice are less likely to survive, are unable to mount immune responses, and produce more IL-6 when compared to young adult mice given the same size injuries. Enhancing our understanding of the mechanisms responsible for regulating cell-mediated immune responses after injury could lead to the development of therapies designed to treat aged burn patients.

Abstract
Although the dengue iceberg phenomenon is well known, there is a paucity of data on inapparent dengue. Results from a seroepidemiological study conducted during a dengue epidemic in 2007 in Singapore showed a seroprevalence of 65.9% and an inapparent dengue rate of 78%. Older adults (> 45 years old) had significantly higher rates of inapparent dengue infections (P < 0.05).

Abstract
The lymphocyte-depleted type (LD) is a morphological subtype of classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL), but its rarity and heterogeneous morphological character makes a definite clinicopathological identification difficult. To characterize this disease, LD cases were compared with other types of CHL. From 1982 to 2006, we collected 310 CHL cases. Among them, 29 cases were diagnosed as LD. We could additionally analyze clinical data of 157 CHL cases (including 28 LD cases) and the immunophenotype of 150 CHL cases (including 28 LD cases). We compared clinicopathological data between LD cases and other types of CHL cases and determined prognostic factors by univariate and multivariate analysis. LD showed a more progressive disease stage (stage 3/4, 64%) than other types of CHL (stage 3/4, 30%; P<0.001), more frequent B symptoms (89% vs. 40%; P<0.001) and extranodal invasion (50% vs. 11%; P<0.001), older age (median: 66 vs. 33; P<0.001), higher serum soluble interleukin 2 receptor levels (median: 8240U/ml vs. 1705U/ml; P<0.001), and much poorer prognosis regardless of the international prognostic score (IPS) (five-year overall survival: 29% vs. 86%; P<0.001). The morphological subtype of LD represented an independent prognostic factor as did age and IPS by multivariate analysis. Immunohistochemistry showed that the characteristics of Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells of LD are basically not different from those of other types of CHL in terms of CD30, CD15, and chemokine receptors, except for high-level EB-virus infection (72% vs. 41%; P=0.002). LD should be distinguished from other types of classical Hodgkin lymphoma because of its definitive clinicopathological characters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) plays a crucial role in the development and progression of gastric cancer. A functional polymorphism, -308 G>A (rs1800629), which is located in the promoter of TNFA gene, has been suggested to alter the production of TNF-α and influence cancer risk. In the present study, we sought to investigate whether this polymorphism has effects on the risk and progression of gastric cancer in a Chinese population. METHODS We genotyped the TNFA -308 G>A polymorphism using the TaqMan method in a two-stage case-control study comprising a total of 1686 gastric cancer patients and 1895 cancer-free subjects. The logistic regression was used to assess the genetic associations with occurrence and progression of gastric cancer. RESULTS We found a significant association between the variant genotypes and increased risk of gastric cancer [P = 0.034, odds ratio (OR) = 1.39, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.01-1.67, GA/AA vs. GG]. Similar results were observed in the follow-up replication study. When combined the data from the two studies, we found a more significant association (P = 0.001, OR = 1.34, 95%CI = 1.13-1.59), especially for older subjects (>65 years). Furthermore, the patients carrying the variant genotypes had a significantly greater prevalence of T4 stage of disease (P = 0.001, OR = 2.19, 95%CI = 1.39-3.47) and distant metastasis (P = 0.013, OR = 1.61, 95%CI = 1.10-2.35). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the functional promoter -308 G>A polymorphism in TNFA influence the susceptibility and progression of gastric cancer in the Chinese population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to examine the influence of age at diagnosis and sex on the clinical course and long-term prognosis of intestinal Behcet's disease (BD). METHODS We reviewed the medical records of 291 patients with intestinal BD who underwent regular follow-up at a single tertiary academic medical center. The patients were divided into two groups according to their age at diagnosis of intestinal BD or sex. The cumulative probabilities of operation, admission, corticosteroid use, and immunosuppressant use after diagnosis were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and a log-rank test. RESULTS Of the 291 patients, 154 (52.9%) were diagnosed with intestinal BD when younger than 40 years old, and 132 (45.4%) were male. Younger age at diagnosis was associated with a higher leukocyte count, C-reactive protein (CRP) level, and disease activity index for intestinal BD, and with a greater prevalence of volcano-shaped ulcers and a definite diagnostic subtype. Moreover, the cumulative probabilities of operation, admission, and corticosteroid use were significantly higher in the younger group. Male sex was associated with a higher CRP level and a greater prevalence of volcano-shaped ulcers. However, there were no significant differences in cumulative probabilities of operation, admission, corticosteroid use, and immunosuppressant use according to sex. CONCLUSIONS In intestinal BD, younger age at diagnosis is associated with a more severe clinical course and a poorer prognosis. However, although some clinical manifestations at initial diagnosis tend to be more severe in male patients, clinical outcomes do not differ significantly according to sex.

Abstract
PURPOSE Our objective was to relate immunological data for healthy but sedentary elderly women to aerobic power, strength, and mood state. METHODS We measured peak aerobic power and one-repetition maximum strength along with mood (depression and fatigue), quality of life and carbohydrate intake on 42 women aged 60-77 years. Standard immunological techniques determined natural killer cell count and cytotoxic activity (NKCA), proliferative responses to phytohemaglutinin and OKT(3), various lymphocyte subpopulations (CD3(+), CD3(-)CD19(+), CD56(+), CD4(+), CD8(+), CD56(dim) and CD56(bright)), and markers of activation, maturation, down-regulation and susceptibility to apoptosis (CD25(+), CD28(+), CD45RA(+), CD45RO(+), CD69(+), CD95(+), HLA-DR(+)). RESULTS Correlations of immune parameters with aerobic power and strength were very similar for absolute and relative immunological data. In the group as a whole, the only correlation with aerobic power was -0.35 (relative CD4(+)CD69(+) count), but in subjects with values <22.6 mL kg(-1)min(-1) correlations ranged from -0.57 (relative CD4(+)CD45RO(+)) to 0.92 (absolute CD56(dim)HLA-DR(+)). In terms of muscle strength, univariate correlation coefficients ranged from -0.34 (relative and absolute CD3(+)CD4(+)CD8(+)) to +0.48 (absolute CD3(+)HLA-DR(+)) and +0.50 (absolute CD8(+)CD45RA(+)CD45RO(+)). Neither NKCA nor lymphocyte proliferation were correlated with aerobic power or muscle strength. Although mood state and quality of life can sometimes be influenced by an individual's fitness level, our multivariate analyses suggested that depression, fatigue and quality of life were more important determinants of immune profile than our fitness measures. CONCLUSIONS Psychological changes associated with aging may have a substantial adverse effect upon the immune system, and immunological function may be enhanced more by addressing these issues than by focusing upon aerobic or resistance training.

Abstract
Inflammation in older persons is associated with frailty, cachexia, and disability. We hypothesized that NSAID treatment in addition to antibiotics in older patients with acute infection might rapidly reduce inflammatory cytokines and might be of therapeutic potential to improve outcomes. A double-blind controlled trial was conducted in geriatric patients admitted for acute infection. Patients were randomized to receive either 10 mg piroxicam or placebo. Patients ≥70 years with CRP levels >10 mg/L of acute infectious origin were eligible. Twenty-five cyto-/chemokines as well as heat shock proteins Hsp27 (HSPB1) and Hsp70 (HSPA1A) were measured the first 4 days and then weekly until discharge, with a maximum of 3 weeks. Thirty Caucasian patients were included (median age 84.5 years, 67% female, median CRP 87.5 mg/L). In the piroxicam group, IL-6 and IP-10/CXCL10 decreased significantly during the study period. Relationships between cytokines were disrupted in the piroxicam group: for 12 out of 20 cytokines the number of correlations between changes in serum levels was significantly lower compared to placebo. Serum Hsp70 levels decreased significantly in the piroxicam group, but not in the placebo group. Without heat challenge, intracellular levels of Hsp70 in monocytes decreased in both groups, whereas HsP27 in monocytes increased with piroxicam with a significant difference compared to placebo at 3 weeks. Piroxicam in this setting cannot be considered merely as an anti-inflammatory drug, but rather as an immunomodulator. Further studies are needed to establish whether these effects can change functional outcomes in geriatric patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the factors that predict clinical relapse in Crohn's disease patients receiving thiopurine therapy to maintain remission. The objective of this study was, therefore, to investigate these factors. METHODS A total of 82 Crohn's disease patients who received their first course of azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine treatment at Severance Hospital between June 1996 and July 2007 were recruited to the study. During the follow-up period (25.5 ± 16.6 months) 19 patients (23.2%) discontinued the medication because of significant adverse effects. Forty-five patients who continued to receive thiopurines to maintain medically or surgically induced remission were enrolled in the study. After adjusting the maintenance dose, patients in remission were followed at 2-3 month intervals. Relapse was defined as a Crohn's disease activity index ≥ 150. RESULTS The male-to-female ratio was 1.5:1 and the mean age was 26.3 ± 7.1 years. Cumulative relapse was 18.0% after one year and 49.2% after three years. According to multivariate Cox regression analysis, younger age (<30 years) at thiopurine therapy and increased C-reactive protein level (≥ 0.5 mg/dL) at remission were independent predictors of relapse (hazard ratio 19.751, 95%-confidence interval (CI) 1.996-195.402, P = 0.011 and hazard ratio 9.001, 95% CI 1.583-51.181, P = 0.013, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Younger age (<30 years) and increased C-reactive protein level at remission were independent predictors of relapse in Crohn's disease patients receiving thiopurines to maintain remission. These high-risk groups warrant closer observation and possibly early introduction of biological agents.

Abstract
Non-melanoma skin cancers are a common reality worldwide. The principal cause that determines the occurrence of these diseases is the exposition of the sun, which principally causes an alteration in the immune system. Therefore, it is possible that other forms of innate or acquired alterations of the immune system could favor the occurrence of non-melanoma skin cancers. For example, several studies have demonstrated that immunosenescence creates an immunosuppressive state that encourages the development of malignances, and new discoveries have noted the importance of T cells and in particular of T regulatory cells (Treg) and T receptor CD28 in this mechanism. Similar results are obtained analyzing the effect of immunosuppressive drugs. The importance of the immune system and its alteration in the genesis of non-melanoma skin cancers is fundamental for the creation of a new therapeutic and less invasive approach.

Abstract
T cell-mediated immunotherapy against malignancies has been shown to be effective for certain types of cancer. However, ex vivo expansion of tumor-reactive T cells has been hindered by the low precursor frequency of such cells, often requiring multiple rounds of stimulation, resulting in full differentiation, loss of homing receptors and potential exhaustion of the expanded T cells. Here, we show that when using highly purified naïve CD8+ T cells, a single stimulation with peptide-pulsed, IFNγ/LPS-matured dendritic cells in combination with the sequential use of IL-21, IL-7 and IL-15 is sufficient for extensive expansion of antigen-specific T cells. Short-term expanded T cells were tumor-reactive, multifunctional and retained a central-memory-like phenotype (CD62L+, CCR7+, CD28+). The procedure is highly reproducible and robust as demonstrated for different healthy donors and for cancer patients. Such short-term tumor-antigen-primed, multifunctional T cells may therefore serve as a platform to target different malignancies accessible to immunotherapy.

Abstract
Aging is associated with a progressive dysregulation of immune responses. Whether these changes are solely responsible for the observed increased mortality and morbidity amongst the elderly is uncertain. Recent advances have highlighted the age-associated changes that occur beyond T and B lymphocytes. Additionally, multiple human and animal studies have identified a relationship between chronic low-grade inflammation and geriatric syndromes, such as frailty, suggesting that the phenomenon of "inflamm-aging" may provide a rationale for the increased vulnerability to chronic inflammatory diseases in older adults. In the present review, we broadly summarize our current understanding of age-dependent changes in leukocyte function and their contribution to aging-related disease processes.

Abstract
Cell-mediated and humoral immune responses are attenuated with aging. Intracellular glutathione (GSH) levels also decrease with aging. Previously, we have reported that combined administration of (L)-cystine and (L)-theanine enhances antigen-specific IgG production, partly through augmentation of GSH levels and T helper 2-mediated responses in 12-week-old mice. These findings suggest that combined administration of (L)-cystine and (L)-theanine to aged mice improves immune responses via increase of GSH synthesis. Here, we examined the effects of combined administration of (L)-cystine and (L)-theanine on antigen-specific antibody production and influenza virus infection in aged mice. Combined administration of these amino acids for 14 days before primary immunization significantly enhanced the serum antigen-specific IgM and IgG levels in 24-month-old mice. Furthermore, 13-month-old mice co-treated with these amino acids orally for 10 days had significantly lower lung viral titers than controls at 6 days after influenza virus infection. In addition, this co-treatment also significantly prevented the weight loss associated with infection. Enhancement of anti-influenza-virus IgG antibodies by combined administration of (L)-cystine and (L)-theanine was seen 10 days after infection. The significantly elevated serum interleukin-10/interferon-gamma ratio and gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase mRNA expression, which is the rate-limiting enzyme of GSH synthesis, in the spleen 3 days after infection may have contributed to the observed beneficial effects. These results suggest that combined administration of (L)-cystine and (L)-theanine enhances immune function and GSH synthesis which are compromised with advanced age, and may become a useful strategy in healthy aging.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyse the role of thymic function and its association with cellular immunosenescence markers in patients with low-level CD4 T cell repopulation, despite complete HIV RNA replication control on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). METHODS Cellular immunosenescence markers comparing patients with CD4 T cell counts <or=250 cells/mm(3) for >or=48 weeks (n = 11) and patients with a CD4 T cell count >or=500 cells/mm(3) (n = 11) were investigated. Both groups were also compared with 11 healthy volunteers of similar age. Naive CD4 T cell counts, beta- and delta-T cell rearrangement excision circles, recent thymic emigrants, replicative senescence marker, cell activation, and rate of apoptosis were analysed. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare parameters between both low-level and high-level CD4 T cell repopulation groups, and healthy volunteers. RESULTS Our results showed a lower thymic activity in patients with low-level CD4 T cell repopulation, leading to a decline in CD4 T cell production. On the other hand, a higher activation along with a higher replicative senescence of CD4 T cells contributed to a higher rate of apoptotic CD4 T cells in this group of patients. CONCLUSIONS We propose a model with several different related mechanisms involved in premature immune senescence in HIV-infected patients with low-level CD4 repopulation on HAART. The understanding of such different mechanisms could help find effective strategies to prevent immune decay.

Abstract
The tuberculin skin test (TST) does not discriminate between recent and remote latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). This study was carried out to test two interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-based blood assays in recent contacts with high prevalence of remote LTBI. We performed a contact tracing investigation in a nursing home for the elderly, where elderly patients were exposed to a case of pulmonary tuberculosis. TST, QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G) and T-SPOT.TB (TS.TB) were performed 8 weeks after the end of potential exposure. IFN-γ measurements were recorded and correlation with exposure was evaluated. Twenty-seven (37.5%), 32 (44.4%) and 16 (22.2%) subjects were TST, TS.TB and QFT-G positive, respectively; agreement between TS.TB and QFT-G was good among exposed subjects only (κ=0.915, 0.218 in unexposed, p<0.001). When amounts of IFN-γ were corrected for the number of producing T cells, specific IFN-γ production was significantly different between exposed and unexposed individuals (16.75±5.40 vs 2.33±0.71 IFN-γ IU/1000 SFC, p=0.0001). QFT-G and TS.TB provided discordant results among elderly contacts. Unlike TST, the specific IFN-γ response might discriminate between recent and long-lasting tuberculosis infection.

Abstract
Down syndrome (DS) is the most frequent cause of mental retardation in man. Immunological changes in DS have been observed since the 1970s. The neurological system appears to be ageing precociously, with early occurrence of Alzheimer disease; until now, the observed immunological differences have been interpreted in the same context. Looking back at past and present results of immunological studies in DS children in relation to the clinical consequences they suffer, we conclude that it is more likely that the DS immune system is intrinsically deficient from the very beginning.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Our aim was to study the prevalence and age distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection among Inuit women in Nunavik, northern Quebec, a population at high risk of cervical cancer. METHODS We recruited a cohort of Inuit women seeking routine care and living primarily in four communities of the Nunavik region. Pap smears were done and cervical specimens were tested for HPV-DNA using the PGMY-Line blot assay. RESULTS From January 2002 until December 2007, 629 women were recruited into the study and had their cervical specimens tested. Of 554 women with complete results, the overall and high-risk HPV prevalence were 28.9% and 20.4%, respectively. Multiple-type infections were observed in 40% of HPV-positive subjects. The most common HPV type was HPV-16 (n = 31), and other common high-risk types included HPV-31, HPV-58, and HPV-52. The most prevalent papillomavirus species were alpha-9 (60% of infections), alpha-3 (44%), and alpha-7 (31%). Age-specific prevalence of low-risk HPV, high-risk HPV, and overall HPV showed a U-shaped curve. Of women with baseline cytology, 6.5% had an abnormal result, either atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL), or high-grade intraepithelial lesion (HSIL). HPV-16, HPV-31, and HPV-58 were some of the most common high-risk types detected in both LSIL and HSIL specimens. CONCLUSIONS Overall and high-risk HPV prevalence was elevated in this population of Quebec Inuit women when compared with other populations that have been studied in Canada. Different HPV types seem to be important as contributors to the overall burden of infection and to the presence of cervical abnormalities, which may have implications for developing cervical screening and vaccination programs.

Abstract
Human neutrophils are activated by a wide array of compounds through their receptors. This elicits their classical functions, such as chemotaxis, phagocytosis, and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Upon stimulation, neutrophils also produce lipid and immune mediators and can present antigen through the major histocompatibility complex I (MHC-I). The age-related impairment of the classical functions of neutrophils is well described, but experimental evidence showing alterations in the production of mediators and antigen presentation with aging are lacking. This review highlights the role of neutrophils in age-related pathologies such as Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. Furthermore, we discuss how aging potentially affects the production and release of mediators by human neutrophils in ways that may contribute to the development of these pathologies.

Abstract
Since their compositions remain uncertain, universal pandemic vaccines are yet to be created. They would aim to protect globally against pandemic influenza viruses that have not yet evolved. Thus they differ from seasonal vaccines to influenza virus, which are updated annually in spring to incorporate the latest circulating viruses, and are then produced and delivered before the peak influenza season starts in late fall and winter. The efficacy of seasonal vaccines is linked to their ability to induce virus-neutralizing antibodies, which provide subtype-specific protection against influenza A viruses. If pandemic vaccines were designed to resemble current vaccines in terms of composition and mode of action, they would have to be developed, tested, and mass-produced after the onset of a pandemic, once the causative virus had been identified. The logistic problems of generating a pandemic vaccine from scratch, conducting preclinical testing, and producing billions of doses within a few months for global distribution are enormous and may well be insurmountable. Alternatively, the scientific community could step up efforts to generate a universal vaccine against influenza A viruses that provides broadly cross-reactive protection through the induction of antibodies or T cells to conserved regions of the virus.

Abstract
Immunity conferred by conventional vaccines is restricted to a narrow range of closely related strains, highlighting the unmet medical need for the development of vaccines that elicit protection against multiple pathogenic serotypes. Here we show that a Salmonella bivalent vaccine comprised of strains that lack and overproduce DNA adenine methylase (Dam) conferred cross-protective immunity to salmonella clinical isolates of human and animal origin. Protective immunity directly correlated with increased levels of cross-reactive opsonizing antibodies and memory T cells and a diminished expansion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) that are responsible for the immune suppression linked to several conditions of host stress, including chronic microbial infections, traumatic insults, and many forms of cancer. Further, aged mice contained increased numbers of MDSCs and were more susceptible to Salmonella infection than young mice, suggesting a role for these cells in the immune declines associated with the natural aging process. These data suggest that interventions capable of reducing MDSC presence and activities may allow corresponding increases in B- and T-cell stimulation and benefit the ability of immunologically diverse populations to be effectively vaccinated as well as reducing the risk of susceptible individuals to infectious disease.

Abstract
A decline in T-cell immunity is one of the most consistent and most profound deficiencies of the elderly. Therapeutic correction of this decline often restores immune responsiveness and immune defence. T-cell immune decline in the elderly has at least two underpinnings: a drop in the responsiveness of naive T cells to stimulation (cell-autonomous defects) and a reduction in naive T-cell numbers and diversity that leads to a dominant memory T-cell pool (T-cell population imbalance). This article discusses two key causes of age-related T-cell population imbalance: homeostatic cycling or proliferative expansion in the peripheral T-cell pool, and latent persistent infections, which repeatedly stimulate the T-cell pool over the lifetime of the individual. The reduction in production of naive T cells by the thymus forces the ageing organism to rely on compensatory homeostatic mechanisms to maintain the balance between naive and memory T-cell pools. Although this may be initially successful, recent evidence suggests that late in life these mechanisms exhaust their usefulness and actually contribute to a further demise of the remaining naive T cells. Latent persistent infections, particularly with herpesviruses, lead to life-long periodic restimulation of the immune system, here, evidence is presented for the role of viral reactivation in this restimulation using a mouse model of herpesvirus infection and ageing. Relative roles and the interplay between the homeostatic and viral factors are discussed, with the former having a surprisingly prominent role. Finally, modes of immune rejuvenation and anti-ageing intervention are debated in light of these advances in our knowledge.
A decline in T-cell immunity is a major cause of morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases in the elderly. Janko Nikolich-Žugich weighs up the relative roles of and the interplay between homeostatic factors and persistent viruses in immune senescence. A diverse and well-balanced repertoire of T cells is thought to be crucial for the efficacious defence against infection with new or re-emerging pathogens throughout life. In the last third of the mammalian lifespan, the maintenance of a balanced T-cell repertoire becomes highly challenging because of the changes in T-cell production and consumption. In this Review, I question whether latent persistent pathogens might be key factors that drive this imbalance and whether they determine the extent of age-associated immune deficiency.

Abstract
Aging is associated with declines in immune system function, or 'immunosenescence', leading to progressive deterioration in both innate and adaptive immunity. These changes contribute to the decreased response to vaccines seen in many older adults, and morbidity and mortality from infection. Infections (e.g., influenza, pneumonia and septicemia) appear among the top ten most-common causes of death in adults in the USA aged 55 years and older. As immunosenescence has gathered more attention in the scientific and healthcare communities, investigators have demonstrated more links between immunosenescent changes and morbidity and mortality related to infections and declining vaccine responses. This review summarizes the recent literature on age-dependent defects in adaptive and innate immunity, data linking these defects to poor vaccine response and morbidity and mortality, current recommendations for vaccinations and potential strategies to improve vaccine efficacy in older adults.

Abstract
Non-human primates (NHP) have become an indispensable model in studying the common and dangerous human chronic infections, including HIV/SIV, Hepatitis C virus, and tuberculosis. More recently, we and others have used aged NHP to model human immune aging. Chronic infections and aging are both characterized by a significant depletion of defined lymphocyte subsets and the compensatory attempts to regenerate the immune system. As the efficacious antiviral drugs and novel methods to improve and boost the immune system emerge, therapeutic immune regeneration has become a realistic goal in both the physiologic and pathologic settings. This article will summarize our current knowledge on this topic and will discuss future research directions as well as the potential and power of translational studies in non-human primate models of infection, aging and bone marrow transplantation.

Abstract
The efficacy of vaccine adjuvants can be influenced by the immunological environment of the host, depending on the mechanism(s) by which they exert their immunopotentiating activities. Interleukin-6 is a pleiotropic cytokine that has a broad range of biological activities on immune and non-immune cells. We investigated the role of IL-6 on the ability of nine adjuvant formulations to induce antibody responses to the Plasmodium falciparum MSP1-19 malaria vaccine, using IL-6-/- (KO) mice. Results showed that some adjuvants, i.e. MPL-SE, CFA/IFA, ISA720/QS21/MPL, depended on IL-6 for their efficacy, while others exhibited increased potency in its absence. The efficacy of adjuvants in the IL-6 KO environment cannot be solely attributed to their ability to stimulate antigen-specific cellular responses, suggesting that other biological activities of IL-6 are also important. The results further suggest that two adjuvants utilized dissimilar pathways to potentiate the same type of immune response.

Abstract
Aging is associated with a decline of immune competence and an increase in markers of inflammation. There is considerable evidence that inflammatory processes play a role in aging and the determination of lifespan. Hypopituitary Ames dwarf mice have extended longevity and exhibit many symptoms of delayed aging, although various aspects of immune function are suppressed in the mutants. In the present study, the expression of genes related to immunity and inflammation was compared in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) from Ames dwarf and normal mice using Affymetrix GeneChip arrays. Among the more than 3000 probe sets that were differentially expressed, 273 were identified as being associated with immunity and/or inflammation. Pathway analysis revealed interactions among 91 of these probe sets, centered on casp3, bcl2, il4, prkca, mapk14 and TGFbeta1. Ames dwarf mice had reduced leukocyte expression of casp3 and TGFbeta and increased expression of Bcl2. Alterations in the expression of these genes suggest likely functional changes in apoptosis, B and T cell homeostasis, prostaglandin synthesis, humoral immunity, chemokine activity, complement activation, hemostasis and wound healing pathways. Collectively, these results suggest that activation of both anti-inflammatory pathways and an anti-clotting mechanism combined with reduced turnover of leukocytes may contribute to delayed aging and extended longevity of Ames dwarf mice. We are also aware that alterations in gene expression in PBLs can be due to different composition of PBL populations when comparing Ames dwarf to WT animals, and it will be interesting to investigate these genes in particular PBL populations in the future. However, whole leukocytes population represents the function of immune system in these organisms.

Abstract
Immunity refers to the body's capacity to resist invading organisms and toxins, thereby preventing tissue and organ damage. A patient whose immune system is impaired may be at higher risk for untoward perioperative events. Some populations most at risk for immunocompromise include infants, geriatric patients, people who have undergone organ transplantation, and people with cancer. Patients who are immunocompromised have an increased risk for hypothermia, which can affect postoperative wound healing processes and can increase the risk of wound infection. This article provides a basic overview of the immune system, a discussion of common disorders and diseases of the immune system, and a guide for perioperative nurses to use when they care for a patient who is immunocompromised.
