Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Circadian rhythms seem to impact both dietary intake and metabolism, depending on the individual's chronotype. We aimed to explore whether the nutritional composition of meals throughout the day is influenced by genetics linked to the circadian clock and chronotype within the "European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) chronodiet" study. METHODS The study population comprised 3,183 subjects with information on diet and twelve genetic variants of six genes (PER1, PER2, PER3, CRY1, NR1D1, CLOCK). The associations between the variants with chrononutrition variables (macronutrients and serving sizes of each meal) were evaluated using linear regression, considering an additive genetic model, and adjusting for sex, age and center, among others. The β coefficients, 95 % confidence intervals (CI), and p-values corrected for multiple comparisons were estimated. A genetic risk score (GRS) that was associated to the evening/late chronotype as well as overweight/obesity in a previous study, the chronotype-GRS, was tested for its association with chrononutrition variables. RESULTS The nutritional profile of the diet differed according to the individual's chronotype, with evening/late chronotypes exhibiting an unbalanced intake during breakfast and dinner compared to the intermediate and early chronotypes (e.g., percentage of fats consumed at breakfast relative to the total fat intake: 13 % and 9 %, respectively). However, significant differences were not encountered by the chronotype-GRS. In multivariate analyses, individual associations between the genetic variants and the nutrients revealed some nominal associations (e.g., rs1801260 and rs2070062 with carbohydrates at breakfast: β = -0.06 to 0.08). Higher scorings of the chronotype-GRS were inversely associated with the intake of proteins and carbohydrates (β = -0.46 and -0.41; nominal p-value<0.006; corrected = 0.25) during breakfast. Also, there was an inverse association between the chronotype-GRS and the breakfast's portion size (β = -0.3; nominal p-value = 0.03; corrected = 0.1). CONCLUSIONS Genetic susceptibility to an evening-like chronotype prone to overweight/obesity seems to be associated with a smaller serving size during breakfast, with lower protein and carbohydrate content.

Abstract
Time-restricted eating (TRE) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) improve cardiometabolic health in individuals with overweight/obesity, with high adherence rates in supervised settings. Long-term maintenance of TRE and HIIT in real-world settings is unknown. In our previous TREHIIT trial, 131 women (body mass index (BMI) ≥ 27 kg/m2) were randomized to 7 weeks of TRE (eating window 10-h/day), HIIT (3 sessions/week), a combination (TREHIIT), or no intervention (CON). We investigated self-reported continuation of TRE and/or HIIT after 2 years. Fifty-nine participants (39.0 years (standard deviation (SD) 6.1), BMI 30.7 kg/m2 (SD 4.2)) attended the follow-up. Of those who completed the 7-week TRE or HIIT intervention, 46% maintained TRE and 45% continued HIIT for 2 years. There were no statistically significant (at p < .01) between-group differences in cardiometabolic outcomes, but non-significant lower body mass in HIIT (-4.2 kg, 95% confidence interval (CI), -7.7 to -0.7, p = .019) and visceral fat in TREHIIT (-18 cm2, CI, -33 to -4, p = .015) versus CON. After 2 years, HIIT and TREHIIT had ~ 4 kg lower fat mass and ~ 20 cm² lower visceral fat (both p < .001) compared with baseline. A short-term TRE and HIIT intervention may promote long-term lifestyle changes and health benefits. Future studies should collect objective adherence data to understand long-term maintenance of TRE and HIIT.

Abstract
Intermittent fasting (IF) and ketogenic diets (KDs) have recently attracted much attention in the scientific literature and in popular culture and follow a longer history of exercise and caloric restriction (CR) research. Whereas IF involves cyclic metabolic switching (CMS) between ketogenic and non-ketogenic states, KDs and CR may not. In this Perspective, I postulate that the beneficial effects of IF result from alternating between activation of adaptive cellular stress response pathways during the fasting period, followed by cell growth and plasticity pathways during the feeding period. Thereby, I establish the cyclic metabolic switching (CMS) theory of IF. The health benefits of IF may go beyond those seen with continuous CR or KDs without CMS owing to the unique interplay between the signalling functions of the ketone β-hydroxybutyrate, mitochondrial adaptations, reciprocal activation of autophagy and mTOR pathways, endocrine and paracrine signalling, gut microbiota, and circadian biology. The CMS theory may have important implications for future basic research, clinical trials, development of pharmacological interventions, and healthy lifestyle practices.

Abstract
AIMS Time-restricted eating (TRE) is a chrono-nutrition strategy where the daily 'eating window' is reduced to 8-10 h. We investigated the acute (14-h) effects of TRE, with and without post-meal exercise, on blood glucose and insulin concentrations in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS Fourteen participants (5 F, 9 M; HbA1c: 7.6 ± 1.0%) completed four conditions in this randomised crossover study: CON (eating window, 0800-2000 h), CON with exercise (CON + Ex; 0800-2000 h + 15 min walking at 60% VO2peak, 45 min post-meal), TRE (eating window 1000-1800 h), and TRE with exercise (TRE + Ex, 1000-1800 h + 15 min walking as per CON + Ex), with standardised meals. Venous blood samples were collected at 26-timepoints and analysed for glucose and insulin concentrations. Statistical analysis used linear mixed-effects models with P < 0.05. RESULTS Reducing the eating window had little effect on plasma glucose 14-h area under the curve (AUC). Exercise reduced insulin 14-h AUC (P=0.01) with no additive effect of TRE. CONCLUSION Post-meal exercise lowered 14-h insulin AUC, neither 8-h TRE nor post-meal exercise altered 14-h blood glucose compared with 12-h eating window. Future work should focus on long-term effects of TRE combined with exercise for enhancing blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS To identify the patterns of coffee drinking timing in the US population and evaluate their associations with all-cause and cause-specific mortality. METHODS This study included 40 725 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2018 who had complete information on dietary data and 1463 adults from the Women's and Men's Lifestyle Validation Study who had complete data on 7-day dietary record. Clustering analysis was used to identify patterns of coffee drinking timing. RESULTS In this observational study, two distinct patterns of coffee drinking timing [morning type (36% of participants) and all-day-type patterns (14% of participants)] were identified in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and were validated in the Women's and Men's Lifestyle Validation Study. During a median (interquartile range) follow-up of 9.8 (9.1) years, a total of 4295 all-cause deaths, 1268 cardiovascular disease deaths, and 934 cancer deaths were recorded. After adjustment for caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee intake amounts, sleep hours, and other confounders, the morning-type pattern, rather than the all-day-type pattern, was significantly associated with lower risks of all-cause (hazard ratio: .84; 95% confidential interval: .74-.95) and cardiovascular disease-specific (hazard ratio: .69; 95% confidential interval: .55-.87) mortality as compared with non-coffee drinking. Coffee drinking timing significantly modified the association between coffee intake amounts and all-cause mortality (P-interaction = .031); higher coffee intake amounts were significantly associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality in participants with morning-type pattern but not in those with all-day-type pattern. CONCLUSIONS Drinking coffee in the morning may be more strongly associated with a lower risk of mortality than drinking coffee later in the day.

Abstract
The benefits of regular physical activity (PA) on disease prevention and treatment outcomes have been recognized for centuries. However, only recently has interorgan communication triggered by the release of "myokines" from contracting skeletal muscles emerged as a putative mechanism by which exercise confers protection against numerous disease states. Cross-talk between active skeletal muscles and the gut microbiota reveal how regular PA boosts host immunity, facilitates a more diverse gut microbiome and functional metabolome, and plays a positive role in energy homeostasis and metabolic regulation. In contrast, and despite the large interindividual variation in the human gut microbiome, reduced microbial diversity has been implicated in several diseases of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, systemic immune diseases, and cancers. Although prolonged, intense, weight-bearing exercise conducted in extreme conditions can increase intestinal permeability, compromising gut-barrier function and resulting in both upper and lower GI symptoms, these are transient and benign. Accordingly, the gut microbiome has become an attractive target for modulating many of the positive effects of regular PA on GI health and disease, although the precise dose of exercise required to induce favourable changes in the microbiome and enhance host immunity is currently unknown. Future efforts should concentrate on gaining a deeper understanding of the factors involved in exercise-gut interactions through the generation of functional 'omics readouts (ie, metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics, and metabolomics) that have the potential to identify functional traits of the microbiome that are linked to host health and disease states, and validating these interactions in experimental and preclinical systems. A greater understanding of how PA interacts with the GI tract and the microbiome may enable targeted therapeutic strategies to be developed for individuals and populations at risk for a variety of GI diseases.

Abstract
Fasting-feeding timing is a crucial pattern implicated in the regulation of daily circadian rhythms. The interplay between sleep and meal timing underscores the importance of maintaining circadian alignment in order to avoid creating a metabolic environment conducive to carcinogenesis following the molecular and systemic disruption of metabolic performance and immune function. The chronicity of such a condition may support the initiation and progression of cancer through a variety of mechanisms, including increased oxidative stress, immune suppression, and the activation of proliferative signaling pathways. This review aims to summarize current evidence from human studies and provide an overview of the potential mechanisms underscoring the role of chrononutrition (including time-restricted eating) on cancer risk. Current evidence shows that the morning chronotype, suggesting an alignment between physiological circadian rhythms and eating timing, is associated with a lower risk of cancer. Also, early time-restricted eating and prolonged nighttime fasting were also associated with a lower risk of cancer. The current evidence suggests that the chronotype influences cancer risk through cell cycle regulation, the modulation of metabolic pathways and inflammation, and gut microbiota fluctuations. In conclusion, although there are no clear guidelines on this matter, emerging evidence supports the hypothesis that the role of time-related eating (i.e., time/calorie-restricted feeding and intermittent/periodic fasting) could potentially lead to a reduced risk of cancer.

Abstract
Metabolic regulation is essential for maintaining homeostasis in response to fluctuating dietary nutrient availability. In this review, we explore how metabolic health can be affected by the temporal alignment between daily behavioural patterns (e.g., eating, physical activity and sleep) and recurring cycles in underlying physiology (e.g., 'circadian' rhythms). Misalignment within and/or between these patterns and cycles can lead to metabolic dysregulation, increasing the risk of chronic disease states such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Conversely, metabolic health can be improved by strategically aligning certain behavioural patterns with endogenous rhythms in physiology. Dietary interventions based upon this reasoning are referred to as chrono-nutrition strategies. Skeletal muscle is an important tissue in relation to both whole-body metabolism and behaviour and plays a central role in how physiological rhythms respond to the timing of nutrient delivery/availability. Few studies have examined rhythms in metabolism within human skeletal muscle, providing opportunities to advance current understanding of how nutrient timing affects muscle metabolism.

Abstract
Circadian rhythms, intrinsic cycles spanning approximately 24 h, regulate numerous physiological processes, including sleep-wake cycles, hormone release, and metabolism. These rhythms are orchestrated by the circadian clock, primarily located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus. Disruptions in circadian rhythms, whether due to genetic mutations, environmental factors, or lifestyle choices, can significantly impact health, contributing to disorders such as sleep disturbances, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, there is a profound link between the disruption of circadian rhythms and development of various cancer, the influence on disease incidence and progression. This incurred regulation by circadian clock on pathways has its implication in tumorigenesis, such as cell cycle control, DNA damage response, apoptosis, and metabolism. Furthermore, the circadian timing system modulates the efficacy and toxicity of cancer treatments. In cancer treatment, the use of chronotherapy to optimize the timing of medical treatments, involves administering chemotherapy, radiation, or other therapeutic interventions at specific intervals to enhance efficacy and minimize side effects. This approach capitalizes on the circadian variations in cellular processes, including DNA repair, cell cycle progression, and drug metabolism. Preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated that chronotherapy can significantly improve the therapeutic index of chemotherapeutic agents like cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil by enhancing anticancer activity and reducing toxicity. Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying circadian regulation of cancer and to develop robust chronotherapeutic protocols tailored to individual patients' circadian profiles, potentially transforming cancer care into more effective and personalized treatment strategies.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the potential associations between unhealthy chrononutrition behaviors (meal timing, frequency, and regularity) and their combined impact on cardiometabolic risk in adolescence. METHODS Chrononutrition behaviors were assessed using a 7-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA). The unhealthy chrononutrition score (ranging from 0 to 8) was determined based on late meal timing, low meal frequency, and meal irregularity. The cardiometabolic (CM)-risk z score was calculated utilizing age- and sex-specific reference values for waist circumference (WC), mean arterial pressure (MAP), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Restricted cubic splines were employed to estimate the dose-response relationships between the unhealthy chrononutrition score and outcomes. RESULTS Among 458 participants [mean (SD) age, 17.9 (0.7) years; 340 (74.2%) Female], 14.3% had an unhealthy chrononutrition score ≥ 6, who exhibited higher MAP (β = 3.86; 95% CI 1.24, 6.47), higher CM-risk scores (β = 1.80; 95% CI 0.70, 2.90), and lower HDL-C (β = 0.18; 95% CI - 0.30, - 0.06), as opposed to those with a healthy score ≤ 2 (n = 136, 31.4%). Moreover, late breakfast (later than 9AM compared to earlier than 8AM), low meal frequency (eating two or fewer meals versus three meals a day), and meal irregularity (score of 3-5 compared to a good score of 6-9) were associated with an increased risk of CM-risk outcomes. CONCLUSION The findings suggest a clustering of unhealthy chrononutrition behaviors that collectively impact cardiometabolic health in adolescence. Further prospective and interventional investigations is necessary to validate these findings and explore the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous observational studies have suggested diabetic patients should synchronize their foods and nutrient intake with their biological rhythm; however, the optimal intake time of coffee and tea for reducing all-cause and disease-specific mortality in diabetes is still unknown. This study aims to examine by investigating the association of timing for coffee and tea consumption with long-term survival in people with diabetes. METHODS A total of 5378 people with diabetes who enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2003 to 2014 were recruited for this study. Coffee and tea intakes were measured by a 24-h dietary recall, which were divided by different time intervals across the day, including dawn to forenoon, forenoon to noon, noon to evening, and evening to dawn. Weighted cox proportional hazards regression models were developed to evaluate the survival-relationship of coffee and tea consumption with mortality of all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), stroke, and diabetes. RESULTS During 47,361 person-year follow up, total 1639 death cases were documented, including 731 CVD deaths, 467 heart disease deaths, 99 stroke deaths, and 462 diabetes deaths. After adjustment for potential confounders, compared with participants without drinking coffee during dawn to forenoon, drinking coffee at this period was associated with increased mortality risk of all-cause (HR 1.25, 95% CI 1.05-1.50), CVD (HR 1.41, 95% CI 1.07-1.86), heart-disease (HR 1.47, 95% CI 1.05-2.07), and diabetes (HR 1.50, 95% CI 1.10-2.04). In contrast, drinking coffee during forenoon to noon had lower mortality risk of all-cause (HR 0.80, 95% CI 0.69-0.92), CVD (HR 0.79, 95% CI 0.63-0.99), and heart disease (HR 0.70, 95% CI 0.52-0.94). Similarly, drinking tea during forenoon to noon had lower risk of CVD mortality (HR = 0.62, 95% CI 0.44-0.87). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that drinking coffee in dawn to forenoon is linked to a higher risk of death, but having coffee and tea from forenoon to noon is linked to a lower risk of overall mortality, CVD, and heart disease in individuals with diabetes.

Abstract
AIMS Investigate the effects of breakfast timing on postprandial glycaemia in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and the impact of a 20-min walk after breakfast. METHODS Eleven adults with T2D (57 ± 7 y; HbA1c 7.4 ± 1%) participated in a six-week randomised crossover controlled trial comprising three 4-day conditions: Early (0700 h), Mid (0930 h) and Delayed (1200 h). After each condition, a second 4-day intervention of 20-min walk after each condition was undertaken. Standardised breakfast was provided. Interstitial glucose and physical activity were measured. Incremental area under the curve (iAUC) 2-h post-breakfast, 24-h iAUC, and fasting glucose were analysed with linear mixed-effects models. Cohen's d of the 2-h iAUC post-breakfast 20-min walk was calculated. RESULTS Mid and Delayed had lower 2-h post-breakfast iAUC (p < 0.002, -57 mmol/L×2h; p < 0.02, -41 mmol/L×2h) compared to Early. There were no differences in fasting (0600 h) glucose or 24-h iAUC. There was a small effect of the 20-min walk on lowering 2-h post-breakfast iAUC for Early (d = 0.35) and Delayed (d = 0.37), with no effect in Mid. CONCLUSION In people with T2D, delaying breakfast from 0700 h to mid-morning or midday reduced postprandial glycaemia. Additional post-meal walking for 20 min had a small effect in lowering postprandial glycaemia when breakfast was at 0700 h or midday, but provided no additional benefit when breakfast was at mid-morning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Time restricted eating (TRE) is a dietary strategy that may improve metabolic health. However, no studies have compared TRE with current practice (CP) in dietetics. HYPOTHESIS TRE will not be inferior to CP to improve glycaemic control in individuals at risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS This parallel group, randomised, non-inferiority, controlled trial randomised 247 participants by site and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) into TRE or CP (1:1) for 12 months. Participants were aged 35-70 years, with a body mass index (BMI) >25 but <45 kg/m2, and score ≥15 on the Australian type 2 diabetes risk (AUSDRISK) assessment, without a diagnosis of T2D. Study visits were balanced between groups and all participants received five consultations at 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 months. TRE followed a self-selected 9 h eating window (≥0600 and ≤1900), whereas CP followed Australian dietary guidelines. OUTCOMES The primary endpoint is the estimate of group mean difference (TRE vs CP) of HbA1c at 4 months in a covariate linear regression adjusting for stratification factors and sex. Secondary efficacy outcomes at 4 and 12 months are changes in fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR and nocturnal glucose by continuous glucose monitor incremental area under the curve and change in HbA1c at 12 months. Other endpoints are exploratory and will not be adjusted for multiplicity. CONCLUSIONS We will determine whether TRE is an alternate strategy to current practice in dietetics to improve glucose control. TRIAL REGISTRATION NCT04762251; 21 Feb 2021.

Abstract
Previous studies mostly focused on the benefits of caloric restriction and fasting on longevity. However, whether the timing and frequency of eating affect aging remains unclear. Here, we investigated the associations between chrononutrition patterns and biological aging, and explored whether and to what extent dietary inflammation mediated this association. 16 531 adults aged 20 to 84 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were collected. Chrononutrition patterns were determined with two 24-hour dietary recalls. Phenotypic age was calculated to reflect the biological aging status. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) was used to assess the dietary inflammation. After adjustment of the survey weight and multiple covariates including total energy intake, participants in the third tertile of the time of the first meal (mean 10 : 26) exhibited more advanced biological age (β 0.64; 95% CI, 0.26-1.00) and a higher incidence of accelerated aging (odds ratio (OR) 1.25; 95% CI, 1.06-1.47) compared to those of the first tertile (mean 6 : 14). Higher eating frequency was associated with delayed biological aging in both multivariable linear (β -0.31; 95% CI, -0.44 to -0.19) and logistic regression model (OR 0.90; 95% CI, 0.85-0.95). Furthermore, we found that DII rather than metabolic factors mediated the inverse association between eating frequency and biological aging (mediation proportion 24.67%; 95% CI, 19.83%-32.00%). Our findings demonstrated the association between chrononutrition patterns and biological aging among the US general population and the potential role of dietary inflammation in this association, suggesting that modifying chrononutrition patterns may be a practical and cost-effective strategy for combating aging.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To date, there has been no study investigating how meal-timing impacts glucose and insulin resistance among Latino youth at high risk of type 2 diabetes. A proof-of-concept study was conducted to assess metabolic response to a test-meal consumed in the morning, afternoon, and evening among 15 Latino adolescents with obesity using a within-participant design. METHODS Youth, 13 to 19 years of age, with obesity, consumed the same test-meal after a 16 hour fast at three different times on separate days. Immediately after consumption of the test meal, a mixed meal tolerance test (MMTT) was performed. The co-primary outcomes were the area under the curve (AUC) for glucose, insulin, and c-peptide, and insulinogenic index (IGI). RESULTS Twenty-two youth consented to participate for a 24% recruitment rate (78% female, 100% Latino, mean age 16.5±1.3 years, 70% publicly insured). There was a significantly greater rise in glucose and c-peptide levels following at 4 PM compared to 8 AM (glucose: p = 0.006; c-peptide: p < 0.0001) with no significant association found between insulin levels and timing of meal consumption. Pairwise comparisons showed a greater rise in AUC glucose and c-peptide levels at 4 PM compared to 8 AM (glucose p = 0.003; c-peptide p < 0.001) with no significant association found between insulin AUC and timing of meal consumption (p = 0.09). There was a greater reduction in IGI at 4 PM compared to 8 AM (p = 0.027). CONCLUSION Similar to findings in adults at risk for diabetes, Latino youth with obesity show greater insulin resistance in response to a meal consumed in the afternoon and evening compared to early morning food consumption.

Abstract
Chrononutrition, an emerging body of evidence on the relationship between biological rhythms and metabolism, has been established to be associated with glycemic responses. However, the available evidence is inconsistent, due to protocol variations. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the findings on chrononutrition characteristics and their association with glycemic responses among adults. Systematic searches were conducted across six databases (PubMed, EBSCO Host, ProQuest Central, MEDLINE & Ovid, Scopus and Web of Science) to identify all relevant studies published from January 2012. Two reviewers independently screened the abstracts and full-text articles based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Details about population characteristics, study methods and key findings were extracted following the PRISMA-ScR guideline. The quality of selected studies was evaluated using the mixed methods appraisal tool. The searchers identified 49 studies eligible for analysis. The results showed that meal timing, particularly night-time eating and snacking were associated with glycemic responses. Regarding meal regularity, skipping breakfast may affect glycemic responses, but no clear conclusion was drawn about its effect on insulin. The association between meal frequency and glycemic responses was inconclusive. Night fasting duration and restricted eating window are potentially associated with glycemic responses. The current review extensively investigates the association between chrononutrition factors and glycemic responses in adults. However, more prospective cohort and interventional studies are needed to better understand this causal-effect relationship.

Abstract
Chrono-nutrition (meal timing) aligns food consumption with one's circadian rhythm. The first meal (e.g., breakfast) likely promotes synchronization of peripheral circadian clocks, thereby supporting metabolic health. Time-restricted feeding (TRF) has been shown to reduce body weight (BW) and/or improve cardiovascular biomarkers. In this explorative literature assessment, 13 TRF randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were selected from PubMed and Scopus to evaluate the effects of early (eTRF: first meal before 10:30 a.m.) and late TRF (lTRF: first meal after 11:30 a.m.) on parameters of metabolic health. Although distinct variations in study design were evident between reports, TRF consistently decreased energy intake (EI) and BW, and improved insulin resistance as well as systolic blood pressure. eTRF seemed to have a greater beneficial effect than lTRF on insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Importantly, most studies did not appear to consider chronotype in their evaluation, which may have underestimated TRF effects. TRF intervention may be a promising approach for risk reduction of human metabolic diseases. To conclusively determine benefits of TRF and identify clear differences between eTRF and lTRF, future studies should be longer-term (≥8 weeks) with well-defined (differences in) feeding windows, include participants chronotypically matching the intervention, and compare outcomes to those of control groups without any dietary limitations.

Abstract
Circadian rhythms integrate a finely tuned network of biological processes recurring every 24 h, intricately coordinating the machinery of all cells. This self-regulating system plays a pivotal role in synchronizing physiological and behavioral responses, ensuring an adaptive metabolism within the environmental milieu, including dietary and physical activity habits. The systemic integration of circadian homeostasis involves a balance of biological rhythms, each synchronically linked to the central circadian clock. Central to this orchestration is the temporal dimension of nutrient and food intake, an aspect closely interwoven with the neuroendocrine circuit, gut physiology, and resident microbiota. Indeed, the timing of meals exerts a profound influence on cell cycle regulation through genomic and epigenetic processes, particularly those involving gene expression, DNA methylation and repair, and non-coding RNA activity. These (epi)genomic interactions involve a dynamic interface between circadian rhythms, nutrition, and the gut microbiota, shaping the metabolic and immune landscape of the host. This research endeavors to illustrate the intricate (epi)genetic interplay that modulates the synchronization of circadian rhythms, nutritional signaling, and the gut microbiota, unravelling the repercussions on metabolic health while suggesting the potential benefits of feed circadian realignment as a non-invasive therapeutic strategy for systemic metabolic modulation via gut microbiota. This exploration delves into the interconnections that underscore the significance of temporal eating patterns, offering insights regarding circadian rhythms, gut microbiota, and chrono-nutrition interactions with (epi)genomic phenomena, thereby influencing diverse aspects of metabolic, well-being, and quality of life outcomes.

Abstract
Daily rhythms of metabolic function are supported by molecular circadian clock systems that are strongly regulated by feeding and fasting. Intermittent fasting diets have been associated with weight loss and improved metabolism. However, the effects of time-restricted eating (TRE) on glycemic parameters are still under debate. In this review, we aim to systematically analyze the effects of TRE on glycemic parameters. We searched on PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library for controlled studies in which subjects followed TRE for at least 4 weeks. 20 studies were included in the qualitative systematic review, and 18 studies (n = 1169 subjects) were included in the meta-analysis. Overall, TRE had no significant effect on fasting glucose (Hedges's g = -0.08; 95% CI:-0.31,0.16; p = 0.52), but it did reduce HbA1c levels (Hedges's g = -0.27; 95% CI: -0.47, -0.06; p = 0.01). TRE significantly reduced fasting insulin (Hedges's g = -0.40; 95% CI: -0.73,-0.08; p = 0.01) and showed a tendency to decrease HOMA-IR (Hedges's g = -0.32; 95% CI:-0.66,0.02; p = 0.06). Interestingly, a cumulative analysis showed that the beneficial effects of TRE regarding glucose levels were less apparent as studies with later TRE windows (lTRE) were being included. Indeed, a subgroup analysis of the early TRE (eTRE) studies revealed that fasting glucose was significantly reduced by eTRE (Hedges's g = -0.38; 95% CI:-0.62, -0.14; p < 0.01). Our meta-analysis suggests that TRE can reduce HbA1c and insulin levels, and that timing of food intake is a crucial factor in the metabolic benefit of TRE, as only eTRE is capable of reducing fasting glucose levels in subjects with overweight or obesity.PROSPERO registration number CRD42023405946.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There are growing concerns on how to prevent, slow down and induce remission of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Recent evidence has found diet and lifestyle interventions can cause remission of T2DM, however, there are challenges for diverse groups such as British Pakistanis who are four times more at risk of T2DM. There is a need to understand the food behaviours of different generational groups to develop culturally appropriate strategies to support diabetes prevention programmes. AIMS This study explores beliefs about healthy eating and food practices related to T2DM among British Pakistanis to understand the challenges they face in implementing healthy diets. METHOD We carried out 26 semi-structured qualitative interviews via telephone and face-to-face. The sample included T2DM British Pakistanis living in Bradford (UK), aged between 18 and 71 with a mean age of 50 (SD = 17.04). Among the participants, 14 were women (54%) and 12 were men (46%), with interviews conducted in both English (76%) and Urdu (24%). Participants were grouped under three generation groups based on age (first generation 65+; second generation 40-64; younger generation 18-39 years). There was no biological link between the generational groups, and they were not part of the same family. Data were analysed using qualitative reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS Findings were categorised into three themes: knowledge and awareness of diabetes symptoms; social and family context of food practices and making sense of healthy eating. The family was the fundamental unit of understanding food-related health behaviours. Eating traditional food was perceived as healthy and deemed practical for first generations who were the initial members of their family to settle in the UK as well as the second generations who had parents born in Pakistan. Younger British Pakistanis were born in the UK and reported that they struggled to eat alternative foods within the home and manage their T2DM. CONCLUSION These findings improve our understanding of how three generations of British Pakistanis with T2DM negotiate healthy diets. There is a need for culturally tailored diet modifications and interventions, where different generational needs can be specifically targeted to adopt healthier diets which should be shared and encouraged.

Abstract
Meal timing plays a crucial role for cardiometabolic health, given the circadian regulation of cardiometabolic function. However, to the best of our knowledge, no concept of meal timing exists in traditional European medicine (TEM). Therefore, in this narrative review, we aim to define the optimal time slot for energy intake and optimal energy distribution throughout the day in a context of TEM and explore further implications. By reviewing literature published between 2002 and 2022, we found that optimal timing for energy intake may be between 06:00 and 09:00, 12:00 and 14:00, and between 15:00 and 18:00, with high energy breakfast, medium energy lunch and low energy dinner and possibly further adjustments according to one's chronotype and genetics. Also, timing and distribution of energy intake may serve as a novel therapeutic strategy to optimize coction, a concept describing digestion and metabolism in TEM. Abstract
BACKGROUND Effective nutrition management is fundamental in the comprehensive treatment of individuals with type 2 diabetes. Various strategies have been explored in this regard, demonstrating their potential usefulness in improving clinical outcomes. This systematic review aims to assess the impact of meals frequency on the well-being of these patients. METHODS AND FINDINGS In accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases were searched until July 10th, 2023. We included studies from the last 10 years in people with type 2 diabetes that had an intervention regarding their meal frequency. The risk of bias was evaluated based on the Cochrane tool according to the type of study. Of 77 retrieval articles, 13 studies matched our inclusion criteria. The primary focus of each study was to evaluate glycemic control as the major outcome. Studies suggest that meal frequency, time-restricted feeding, breakfast skipping, bedtime snacking, and chrononutrition practices all play roles in type 2 diabetes management and risk. CONCLUSIONS Restricting feeding to 2 to 3 meals per day and practicing time restricted feeding with less than 10 hours of daily food intake promotes weight loss and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Aligning food consumption with the body's natural rhythm is beneficial, whereas skipping breakfast disrupts this rhythm. Snacking after evening or waiting 3-4 hours after meal helps control glucose levels, but consuming pre-bedtime snacks do not provide the same benefits. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42023431785.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of timing, frequency, and food quality of night eating with all-cause, cancer, and diabetes mortality. METHODS This study included 41,744 participants from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2002-2018). Night eating information was collected by 24-h dietary recall and the exposures were timing, frequency, and food quality of night eating. Food quality was assessed by latent class analysis. The outcomes were all-cause, cancer, and diabetes mortality, which were identified by the National Death Index and the International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision. Adjusted hazard ratios [aHR] with 95% confidence intervals [CI] were computed by Cox regression. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 8.7 years, 6066 deaths were documented, including 1381 from cancer and 206 from diabetes. Compared with no night eating (eating before 22:00), the later timing of night eating was associated with higher risk of all-cause and diabetes mortality (each P-trend <0.05) rather than cancer mortality, with the highest risk of eating being 00:00-1:00 (aHR 1.38, 95% CI 1.02-1.88) and being 23:00-00:00 (aHR 2.31, 95% CI 1.21-4.40), respectively. However, the increased risks were not observed for 22:00-23:00. Likewise, one time or over frequency of night eating was associated with higher all-cause and diabetes mortality (each P < 0.05). That risks were further observed in high-dietary-energy-density group of night eating (all-cause mortality: aHR 1.21 [95% CI 1.06-1.38]; diabetes mortality: aHR 1.97 [95% CI 1.13-3.45]), but not in low-dietary-energy-density group. Finally, correlation analysis found positive associations of night eating with glycohemoglobin, fasting glucose, and OGTT. CONCLUSIONS Night eating was associated with increased all-cause, cancer and diabetes mortality; however, reduction of excess mortality risk was observed when eating before 23:00 or low-dietary-energy-density foods.

Abstract
Malnutrition, often termed "hidden hunger," represents a pervasive global issue carrying significant implications for health, development, and socioeconomic conditions. Addressing the challenge of inadequate essential nutrients, despite sufficient caloric intake, is crucial. Biofortification emerges as a promising solution by enhance the presence of vital nutrients like iron, zinc, iodine, and vitamin A in edible parts of different crop plants. Crop biofortification can be attained through either agronomic methods or genetic breeding techniques. Agronomic strategies for biofortification encompass the application of mineral fertilizers through foliar or soil methods, as well as leveraging microbe-mediated mechanisms to enhance nutrient uptake. On the other hand, genetic biofortification involves the strategic crossing of plants to achieve a desired combination of genes, promoting balanced nutrient uptake and bioavailability. Additionally, genetic biofortification encompasses innovative methods such as speed breeding, transgenic approaches, genome editing techniques, and integrated omics approaches. These diverse strategies collectively contribute to enhancing the nutritional profile of crops. This review highlights the above-said genetic biofortification strategies and it also covers the aspect of reduction in antinutritional components in food through genetic biofortification.

Abstract
This paper presents new methods to detect eating from wrist motion. Our main novelty is that we analyze a full day of wrist motion data as a single sample so that the detection of eating occurrences can benefit from diurnal context. We develop a two-stage framework to facilitate a feasible full-day analysis. The first-stage model calculates local probabilities of eating P(Ew) within windows of data, and the second-stage model calculates enhanced probabilities of eating P(Ed) by treating all P(Ew) within a single day as one sample. The framework also incorporates an augmentation technique, which involves the iterative retraining of the first-stage model. This allows us to generate a sufficient number of day-length samples from datasets of limited size. We test our methods on the publicly available Clemson All-Day (CAD) dataset and FreeFIC dataset, and find that the inclusion of day-length analysis substantially improves accuracy in detecting eating episodes. We also benchmark our results against several state-of-the-art methods. Our approach achieved an eating episode true positive rate (TPR) of 89% with 1.4 false positives per true positive (FP/TP), and a time weighted accuracy of 84%, which are the highest accuracies reported on the CAD dataset. Our results show that the daily pattern classifier substantially improves meal detections and in particular reduces transient false detections that tend to occur when relying on shorter windows to look for individual ingestion or consumption events.

Abstract
Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are crucial regulators of β-cell function and are involved in lipotoxicity-induced β-cell damage in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We previously identified that circGlis3, a circRNA derived from exon 4 of the diabetes susceptibility gene Glis3, was upregulated in lipotoxic β cells. However, the functional role and molecular mechanism of circGlis3 in β cells remain largely unknown. Here, we revealed that the splicing factor CUGBP Elav-Like Family Member 1 (CELF1) facilitated the biogenesis of circGlis3. Moreover, we established a transgenic mouse model and confirmed that the overexpression of circGlis3 impaired β-cell function. Mechanistically, circGlis3 bound to heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein F (hnRNPF) and blocked its nuclear translocation, thereby reducing Sirt1 levels. Additionally, circGlis3 encoded a 348aa protein that interacted with GLIS3 and inhibited its transcriptional activity. Our data uncover a critical role of circGlis3 in β-cell dysfunction, suggesting that circGlis3 may be a potential therapeutic target for T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary management has been recommended as the cornerstone of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) management. However, low adherence to dietary recommendations has been identified in both developed and developing countries. Previous research suggests that inhibitory control influences eating behavior, but few studies have been conducted in patients with T2DM. Thus, we aimed to explore the relationship between inhibitory control and dietary adherence among patients with T2DM. METHODS A total of 393 patients with T2DM from the endocrinology departments of three tertiary hospitals in China were enrolled by the convenience sampling method. Dietary adherence was measured by the Dietary Behavior Adherence Scale for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Additionally, inhibitory control was subjectively measured by the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult version (BRIEF-A) and objectively assessed by the stop signal task (SST) and the Stroop task. The relationship between inhibitory control and dietary adherence was analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. RESULTS Subjectively measured inhibitory control had a significant predictive effect for dietary adherence after controlling for demographic and clinical variables. Adding the inhibitory control variable to the regression equation resulted in the following values: overall model F (19, 373) = 7.096, p < 0.001, increase in R2 value by 0.069, change in F (1, 373) = 35.219, p < 0.001. Similarly, the performance of the Stroop task had a significant predictive effect for dietary adherence to some foods, i.e., carbohydrate and fat. Adding the Stroop effect variable to the regression equation resulted in the following values: overall model F (19, 81) = 2.848, p = 0.005, increase in R2 value by 0.060, change in F (1, 81) = 8.137, p = 0.006. CONCLUSIONS Inhibitory control was a predictor of dietary adherence in patients with T2DM. Future interventions should investigate whether inhibitory control training results in the improvement of dietary adherence in patients with T2DM.

Abstract
Background Suboptimal health status (SHS) is a non-clinical or pre-disease state between optimal/ideal health and disease. While its etiology remains unclear, lifestyle is considered one of the most important risk factors. We aimed to examine the effects of lifestyles on SHS through a nationwide survey in China. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey in 148 cities across China between 20 June and 31 August 2022, on 30 505 participants from rural and urban communities gathered through stratified quota sampling. We measured SHS with the Short-Form Suboptimal Health Status Questionnaire (SHSQ-SF). We gathered information on participants' lifestyles (ie, smoking, alcohol consumption, breakfast habits, weekly food delivery frequency, intermittent fasting, sleep duration and physical activities) through face-to-face interview. We determined the relationship between lifestyle and SHS logistic regression analysis by based on odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results We included 22 897 participants (female: 13 056, male: 9841), 12 108 (52.88%) of whom reported exposure to SHS. After adjusting for demographic characteristics, individuals who currently smoked (OR = 1.165; 95% CI = 1.058-1.283) and those who drank alcohol (OR = 1.483; 95% CI = 1.377.1.596) were at a higher risk of SHS than those who have never done either. In a dose-response way, takeaway food consumption was associated with a higher risk of SHS, while increased frequency of breakfast and mild-intensity exercise conversely reduced said risk. Individuals with shorter sleep duration had a higher risk of SHS when compared to those who slept for more than seven hours per day. Conclusions We observed a relatively high prevalence of SHS across China, highlighting the importance of lifestyle in health promotion. Specifically, adopting healthy dietary habits, engaging in regular physical activity, and ensuring high-quality sleep are key in preventing SHS. Abstract
BACKGROUND Accumulating evidence has suggested an oncogenic effect of diurnal disruption on cancer progression. To test whether targeting circadian rhythm by dietary strategy suppressed lung cancer progression, we adopted 6-h time-restricted feeding (TRF) paradigm to elucidate whether and how TRF impacts lung cancer progression. METHODS This study used multiple lung cancer cell lines, two xenograft mouse models, and a chemical-treated mouse lung cancer model. Stable TIM-knockdown and TIM-overexpressing A549 cells were constructed. Cancer behaviors in vitro were determined by colony formation, EdU proliferation, wound healing, transwell migration, flow cytometer, and CCK8 assays. Immunofluorescence, pathology examinations, and targeted metabolomics were also used in tumor cells and tissues. mCherry-GFP-LC3 plasmid was used to detect autophagic flux. RESULTS We found for the first time that compared to normal ad libitum feeding, 6-h TRF inhibited lung cancer progression and reprogrammed the rhythms of metabolites or genes involved in glycolysis and the circadian rhythm in tumors. After TRF intervention, only timeless (TIM) gene among five lung cancer-associated clock genes was found to consistently align rhythm of tumor cells to that of tumor tissues. Further, we demonstrated that the anti-tumor effect upon TRF was partially mediated by the rhythmic downregulation of the TIM and the subsequent activation of autophagy. Combining TRF with TIM inhibition further enhanced the anti-tumor effect, comparable to treatment efficacy of chemotherapy in xenograft model. CONCLUSIONS Six-hour TRF inhibits lung cancer progression and reshapes circadian metabolism, which is partially mediated by the rhythmic downregulation of the TIM and the subsequent upregulation of autophagy.

Abstract
Background This study aims to explore the factors associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and patient autonomy in obesity treatment decision-making. Methodology A cross-sectional, online, descriptive survey design was adopted in this study. The survey instrument incorporated the Ideal Patient Autonomy Scale (IPAS) and other factors affecting patient autonomy in the AI-patient relationship. The study participants included 74 physicians, 55 dieticians, and 273 obese patients. Results Different views were expressed in the scales AI knows the best (μ = 2.95-3.15) and the patient should decide (μ = 2.95-3.16). Ethical concerns (μ = 3.24) and perceived privacy risks (μ = 3.58) were identified as having a more negative influence on patient autonomy compared to personal innovativeness (μ = 2.41) and trust (μ = 2.85). Physicians and dieticians expressed significantly higher trust in AI compared to patients (p < 0.05). Conclusions Patient autonomy in the AI-patient relationship is significantly affected by privacy, trust, and ethical issues. As trust is a multifaceted factor and AI is a novel technology in healthcare, it is essential to fully explore the various factors influencing trust and patient autonomy.

Abstract
Background Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII) has been reported to be associated with diabetes. We aimed to assess possible links between SII and diabetes. Methods Data were obtained from the 2017-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. After removing missing data for SII and diabetes, we examined patients older than 20 years. Simultaneously, the relationship between SII and diabetes was examined using weighted multivariate regression analysis, subgroup analysis, and smooth curve fitting. Results There were 7877 subjects in this study, the average SII was 524.91 ± 358.90, and the prevalence of diabetes was 16.07%. Weighted multivariate regression analysis found that SII was positively associated with diabetes, and in model 3, this positive association remained stable (OR = 1.04; 95% CI: 1.02-1.06; p = 0.0006), indicating that each additional unit of SII, the possibility of having diabetes increased by 4%. Gender, age, BMI, regular exercise, high blood pressure, and smoking did not significantly affect this positive link, according to the interaction test (p for trend>0.05). Discussion Additional prospective studies are required to examine the precise connection between higher SII levels and diabetes, which may be associated with higher SII levels.

Abstract
The effect of the antioxidant capacity of diet and its distribution across three meals on mortality risk among cancer patients remains unexplored. We aimed to prospectively investigate the association of dietary total antioxidant capacity (DAC) and its distribution across three meals with all-cause, cancer, and noncancer mortality among cancer survivors. We included 5,009 patients with cancer from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 1999 and 2018. The adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) was estimated using the survey-weighted Cox proportional hazards model. During a median follow-up of 7.9 years, 1811 deaths, including 575 cancer-related deaths, were recorded. Among cancer survivors, compared with participants in the lowest quartile of total DAC from three meals, those in the highest quartile had a 24% decreased risk of noncancer mortality (aHR = 0.76, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.60-0.92), but not of all-cause and cancer mortality (each p trend >0.1). However, this association became insignificant for total DAC after excluding dinner DAC. In addition, higher dinner DAC rather than breakfast or lunch DAC was associated with a 21% lower risk of all-cause mortality (aHR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.65-0.98) and 28% lower risk of noncancer mortality (aHR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.57-0.90). Similar associations were found for ΔDAC (dinner DAC - breakfast DAC) with noncancer mortality (aHR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.38-0.83), but DAC was not associated with cancer mortality (p trend >0.3). Among cancer survivors, total DAC from three meals was associated with reduced noncancer mortality, with the primary effect attributable to increased DAC intake from dinner. Our findings emphasize that DAC consumption from dinner should be advocated to reduce mortality risk in cancer survivors.

Abstract
Disruptions to circadian rhythm may be implicated in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (Met-S). For example, eating during an extended period of the day may negatively impact the circadian rhythms governing metabolic control, contributing, therefore, to Met-S and associated end-organ damage. Accordingly, time-restricted eating (TRE)/feeding (TRF) is gaining popularity as a dietary intervention for the treatment and prevention of Met-S. To date, no studies have specifically examined the impact of TRE/TRF on the renal consequences of Met-S. The proposed study seeks to use a model of experimental Met-S-associated kidney disease to address this knowledge gap, disambiguating therein the effects of calorie restriction from the timing of food intake. Spontaneously hypertensive rats will consume a high-fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks and then be allocated by stratified randomisation according to albuminuria to one of three groups. Rats will have free 24-h access to HFD (Group A), access to HFD during the scheduled hours of darkness (Group B) or access to HFD provided in the form of two rations, one provided during the light phase and one provided during the dark phase, equivalent overall in quantity to that consumed by rats in Group B (Group C). The primary outcome measure will be a change in albuminuria. Changes in food intake, body weight, blood pressure, glucose tolerance, fasting plasma insulin, urinary excretion of C-peptide and renal injury biomarkers, liver and kidney histopathology and inflammation, and fibrosis-related renal gene expression will be assessed as secondary outcomes.

Abstract
Background A low micronutrient intake has been reported to contribute to the double-burden of obesity, increasing the risk for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and mental disorders. This case-control study compared micronutrient intake profiles in overweight/obese vs. normal-weight individuals. We hypothesized that a low intake of certain micronutrients would increase the odds of being overweight/obese. Methods The case group (n = 812 adults) consisted of individuals with a BMI of ≥25 kg/m2, and the control group (n = 793) had BMIs of 17.9-24.9 kg/m2. A validated 124-item food frequency questionnaire was used to determine micronutrient-related dietary-quality, using the index of nutritional quality (INQ), calculated as the fraction of a micronutrient consumed vs. its dietary requirement. In addition, body surface area (BSA) was calculated according to the Mosteller formula. Results The control group had significantly higher INQ-scores of vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, and selenium compared to the case group. Furthermore, individuals with normal BSA (≤1.91 m2 for men; ≤1.71 m2 for women) had significantly higher INQ scores of vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, and zinc compared to participants with high BSA. In multivariable adjustment regression models, INQs of vitamin C (ORBMI = 0.79, 95%CI: 0.64-0.97; ORBSA = 0.81, 95%CI, 0.68-0.97) and magnesium (ORBMI = 0.69, 95%CI: 0.47-0.99; ORBSA = 0.71, 95%CI: 0.52-0.97) were significantly associated with the odds of obesity/overweight (in both BMI and BSA categories). Conclusion The significant association between micronutrient levels of the diet, especially of vitamin C and magnesium, with both obesity criteria, emphasized the importance of certain micronutrients in the obesity/overweight causal network.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic scoping review aimed to map and synthesize research on feasibility of time-restricted eating (TRE) in individuals with overweight, obesity, prediabetes, or type 2 diabetes, including recruitment rate, retention rate, safety, adherence, and participants' attitudes, experiences, and perspectives. METHODS The authors searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature from inception to November 22, 2022, supplemented by backward and forward citation search. RESULTS From 4219 identified records, 28 studies were included. In general, recruitment was easy and median retention rate was 95% among studies with <12 weeks duration and 89% among studies ≥12 weeks. Median (range) adherence to the target eating window for studies <12 and ≥12 weeks was 89% (75%-98%) and 81% (47%-93%), respectively. Variation in adherence among participants and studies was considerable, indicating that following TRE was difficult for some people and that intervention conditions influenced adherence. These findings were supported by qualitative data synthetized from seven studies, and determinants of adherence included calorie-free beverages outside the eating window, provision of support, and influence on the eating window. No serious adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS TRE is implementable, acceptable, and safe in populations with overweight, obesity, prediabetes, or type 2 diabetes, but it should be accompanied by support and options for individual adjustments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To design an appealing time-restricted eating (TRE) intervention by exploring behavioral and social mechanisms to improve TRE adoption and maintenance among people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and overweight. Time-restricted eating is an intermittent fasting regimen suggested to improve glycemic control and body weight. METHODS Intervention development combined coherence theory and empirical data (workshops and semistructured interviews with the target group, their relatives, and health care professionals [HCPs]). Abductive analysis was applied. RESULTS The analysis suggested designing the TRE intervention in 2 phases: a short period with strict TRE, followed by a longer period focusing on adapting TRE to individual needs with support from HCPs, relatives, and peers. To reinforce TRE motivation and maintenance, HCPs should adopt a whole-person approach that focuses on participants' previous experiences. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Important intervention elements to promote TRE adoption and maintenance are suggested to include a 2-phase design and support from professionals, family, and peers.

Abstract
Nutrition therapy has been emphasised for decades for people with type 2 diabetes, and the vital importance of diet and nutrition is now also recognised for type 2 diabetes prevention. However, the complexity of diet and mixed messages on what is unhealthy, healthy or optimal have led to confusion among people with diabetes and their physicians as well as the general public. What should people eat for the prevention, management and remission of type 2 diabetes? Recently, progress has been made in research evidence that has advanced our understanding in several areas of past uncertainty. This article examines some of these issues, focusing on the role of diet in weight management and in the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes. It considers nutritional strategies including low-energy, low-fat and low-carbohydrate diets, discusses inter-relationships between nutrients, foods and dietary patterns, and examines aspects of quantity and quality together with new developments, challenges and future directions.

Abstract
Circadian rhythms that influence mammalian homeostasis and overall health have received increasing interest over the past two decades. The molecular clock, which is present in almost every cell, drives circadian rhythms while being a cornerstone of physiological outcomes. The skeletal muscle clock has emerged as a primary contributor to metabolic health, as the coordinated expression of the core clock factors BMAL1 and CLOCK with the muscle-specific transcription factor MYOD1 facilitates the circadian and metabolic programme that supports skeletal muscle physiology. The phase of the skeletal muscle clock is sensitive to the time of exercise, which provides a rationale for exploring the interactions between the skeletal muscle clock, exercise and metabolic health. Here, we review the underlying mechanisms of the skeletal muscle clock that drive muscle physiology, with a particular focus on metabolic health. Additionally, we highlight the interaction between exercise and the skeletal muscle clock as a means of reinforcing metabolic health and discuss the possible implications of the time of exercise as a chronotherapeutic approach.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes is one of the leading threats to human health in the 21st century. It is a metabolic disorder characterized by a dysregulated glucose metabolism resulting from impaired insulin secretion or insulin resistance. More recently, accumulated epidemiological and animal model studies have confirmed that circadian dysfunction caused by shift work, late meal timing, and sleep loss leads to type 2 diabetes. Circadian rhythms, 24-h endogenous biological oscillations, are a fundamental feature of nearly all organisms and control many physiological and cellular functions. In mammals, light synchronizes brain clocks and feeding is a main stimulus that synchronizes the peripheral clocks in metabolic tissues, such as liver, pancreas, muscles, and adipose tissues. Circadian arrhythmia causes the loss of synchrony of the clocks of these metabolic tissues and leads to an impaired pancreas β-cell metabolism coupled with altered insulin secretion. In addition to these, gut microbes and circadian rhythms are intertwined via metabolic regulation. Omics approaches play a significant role in unraveling how a disrupted circadian metabolism causes type 2 diabetes. In the present review, we emphasize the discoveries of several genes, proteins, and metabolites that contribute to the emergence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). The implications of these discoveries for comprehending the circadian clock network in T2D may lead to new therapeutic solutions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the impact of time-restricted eating (TRE) on integrated skeletal muscle myofibrillar protein synthesis (MyoPS) rates in males with overweight/obesity. METHODS A total of 18 healthy males (age 46 ± 5 years; BMI: 30 ± 2 kg/m2 ) completed this exploratory, parallel, randomized dietary intervention after a 3-day lead-in diet. Participants then consumed an isoenergetic diet (protein: ~1.0 g/kg body mass per day) following either TRE (10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) or an extended eating control (CON; 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.) protocol for 10 days. Integrated MyoPS rates were measured using deuterated water administration with repeated saliva, blood, and muscle sampling. Secondary measures included continuous glucose monitoring and body composition (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry). RESULTS There were no differences in daily integrated MyoPS rates (TRE: 1.28% ± 0.18% per day, CON: 1.26% ± 0.22% per day; p = 0.82) between groups. From continuous glucose monitoring, 24-hour total area under the curve was reduced following TRE (-578 ± 271 vs. CON: 12 ± 272 mmol/L × 24 hours; p = 0.001). Total body mass declined (TRE: -1.6 ± 0.9 and CON: -1.1 ± 0.7 kg; p < 0.001) with no differences between groups (p = 0.22). Lean mass loss was greater following TRE compared with CON (-1.0 ± 0.7 vs. -0.2 ± 0.5 kg, respectively; p = 0.01). CONCLUSION Consuming food within an 8-hour time-restricted period does not lower daily MyoPS rates when compared with an isoenergetic diet consumed over 12 hours. Future research should investigate whether these results translate to free-living TRE.

In this Viewpoint, experts in the fields of medical therapy, adipocyte biology, exercise and muscle, bariatric surgery, genetics, and public health give their perspectives on current and future progress in addressing the rising prevalence of obesity.

Abstract
The human circadian system has a period of approximately 24 h and studies on the consequences of "chornodisruption" have greatly expanded. Lifestyle and environmental factors of modern societies (i.e., artificial lighting, jetlag, shift work, and around-the-clock access to energy-dense food) can induce disruptions of the circadian system and thereby adversely affect individual health. Growing evidence demonstrates a complex reciprocal relationship between metabolism and the circadian system, in which perturbations in one system affect the other one. From a nutritional genomics perspective, genetic variants in clock genes can both influence metabolic health and modify the individual response to diet. Moreover, an interplay between the circadian rhythm, gut microbiome, and epigenome has been demonstrated, with the diet in turn able to modulate this complex link suggesting a remarkable plasticity of the underlying mechanisms. In this view, the study of the impact of the timing of eating by matching elements from nutritional research with chrono-biology, that is, chrono-nutrition, could have significant implications for personalized nutrition in terms of reducing the prevalence and burden of chronic diseases. This review provides an overview of the current evidence on the interactions between the circadian system and nutrition, highlighting how this link could in turn influence the epigenome and microbiome. In addition, possible nutritional strategies to manage circadian-aligned feeding are suggested.

Abstract
Time-restricted feeding (TRF) is an emerging behavioral nutrition intervention that involves a daily cycle of feeding and fasting. In both animals and humans, TRF has pleiotropic health benefits that arise from multiple organ systems, yet the molecular basis of TRF-mediated benefits is not well understood. Here, we subjected mice to isocaloric ad libitum feeding (ALF) or TRF of a western diet and examined gene expression changes in samples taken from 22 organs and brain regions collected every 2 h over a 24-h period. We discovered that TRF profoundly impacts gene expression. Nearly 80% of all genes show differential expression or rhythmicity under TRF in at least one tissue. Functional annotation of these changes revealed tissue- and pathway-specific impacts of TRF. These findings and resources provide a critical foundation for future mechanistic studies and will help to guide human time-restricted eating (TRE) interventions to treat various disease conditions with or without pharmacotherapies.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of obesity continues to rise, and although this is a complex disease, the screening is made simply with the value of the Body Mass Index. This index only considers weight and height, being limited in portraying the multiple existing obesity phenotypes. The characterization of the chronotype and circadian system as an innovative phenotype of a patient's form of obesity is gaining increasing importance for the development of novel and pinpointed nutritional interventions. Objective The present study is a prospective observational controlled study conducted in Portugal, aiming to characterize the chronotype and determine its relation to the phenotype and dietary patterns of patients with obesity and healthy participants. Methods Adults with obesity (study group) and healthy adults (control group), aged between 18 and 75, will be enrolled in this study. Data will be collected to characterize the chronotype, dietary intake, and sleep quality through validated questionnaires. Body composition will also be assessed, and blood samples will be collected to quantify circadian and metabolic biomarkers. Discussion This study is expected to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of obesity and dietary intake on circadian biomarkers and, therefore, increase scientific evidence to help future therapeutic interventions based on chronobiology, with a particular focus on nutritional interventions.

Self-Reported Dietary Management Behaviors and Dietary Intake among Chinese Adults with Diabetes: A Population-Based Study. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14235178. Abstract
Few studies have analyzed the implementation of dietary management in Chinese adults with diabetes. Thus, we assessed and compared dietary intake and diet quality between diabetic patients with and without dietary management behaviors (DPDM vs. NDPDM), and evaluated the adherence to dietary guidelines in both groups of patients. The data were obtained from the 2002, 2010-2013, and 2015 China National Nutrition Survey. A total of 69,583, 67,177, and 96,631 subjects participated in the 2002, 2010-2013, and 2015 survey rounds, respectively. The dietary intake data were measured using 3-day 24 h dietary recalls and weighed records of household condiments. The China Healthy Diet Index (CHDI) was used to evaluate diet quality. The study included 6229 patients with diabetes, of which 78% had dietary management behaviors. The diabetic patients with dietary management behaviors showed higher percentages of energy from high-quality carbohydrates, animal protein, saturated fatty acids, and unsaturated fatty acids and lower percentages from low-quality carbohydrates and plant protein than NDPDM. The diabetic patients with dietary management behaviors also had lower intakes of cereals and tubers and higher intakes of vegetables than NDPDM. The total CHDI score of DPDM was higher than NDPDM (56.3 ± 12.7 vs. 54.1 ± 12.3). The proportion of DPDM meeting the recommended intake for different food items ranged from 3.3% to 42.8% and from 3.0% to 39.2% in NDPDM. The diabetic patients with dietary management behaviors showed better adherence to dietary guidelines and higher diet quality scores than NDPDM, while the overall adherence was poor in both groups of patients. Our findings suggested that measures are needed to promote and refine dietary management behaviors, which can help to improve disease management in diabetic patients.

Abstract
There currently exists a modern epidemic of sleep loss, triggered by the changing demands of our 21st century lifestyle that embrace 'round-the-clock' remote working hours, access to energy-dense food, prolonged periods of inactivity, and on-line social activities. Disturbances to sleep patterns impart widespread and adverse effects on numerous cells, tissues, and organs. Insufficient sleep causes circadian misalignment in humans, including perturbed peripheral clocks, leading to disrupted skeletal muscle and liver metabolism, and whole-body energy homeostasis. Fragmented or insufficient sleep also perturbs the hormonal milieu, shifting it towards a catabolic state, resulting in reduced rates of skeletal muscle protein synthesis. The interaction between disrupted sleep and skeletal muscle metabolic health is complex, with the mechanisms underpinning sleep-related disturbances on this tissue often multifaceted. Strategies to promote sufficient sleep duration combined with the appropriate timing of meals and physical activity to maintain circadian rhythmicity are important to mitigate the adverse effects of inadequate sleep on whole-body and skeletal muscle metabolic health. This review summarises the complex relationship between sleep, circadian biology, and skeletal muscle, and discusses the effectiveness of several strategies to mitigate the negative effects of disturbed sleep or circadian rhythms on skeletal muscle health.

Abstract
Time-restricted feeding (TRF) and Ramadan fasting (RF) have been recently associated with several health outcomes. However, it is not yet clear if they are superior to existing treatments in terms of glucose metabolism, insulin action, and weight loss. This review aims to summarize the current data on the effects of these regimes on body weight, body composition, and glycemia. An electronic search was conducted in PUBMED and SCOPUS databases up to August 2022. Twenty-four records met the inclusion criteria and underwent a risk-of-bias assessment. The main outcomes were: (a) TRF may result in moderate weight loss in individuals with overweight/obesity; when TRF is combined with caloric restriction, weight loss is >5% of the initial body weight, (b) 14 h of fasting may be as effective as 16 h in terms of weight loss, and (c) TRF may lead to improved insulin sensitivity and glycemic responses/variability throughout the day in individuals with overweight/obesity. Concerning RF, only two studies were available and thus, conclusions were not drawn. TRF may be an effective nutritional approach for weight loss, and the amelioration of glycemic control and insulin sensitivity in individuals with overweight/obesity. However, more long-term, well-designed studies are needed.

Abstract
Time-restricted eating (TRE), a dietary strategy that involves limiting daily energy intake to a window of ≤12 h is appealing for weight management and metabolic health due to its relative simplicity and the ability to consume ad libitum diet during eating windows. Despite the potential utility of TRE for improving health and reducing disease, the feasibility of adherence depends upon a variety of multilevel factors which are largely unexplored. The primary aim of our study was to explore facilitators and barriers of adherence to TRE among community-dwelling individuals. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted among 24 individuals (50% male; M age: 34, range: 18-57; 58% overweight/obese) who currently or formerly practiced TRE. Thematic analysis identified facilitators of and barriers to TRE adherence at multiple levels of influence (i.e., biological, behavioral, psychosocial, environmental). Key facilitators of adherence included improvements in physical health and energy levels, alignment with other aspects of diet, exercise and sleep patterns, self-monitoring and positive psychological impacts, social support, and busy or regular schedules. Key barriers included negative physical health effects, feelings of hunger and sluggishness, difficulty in skipping valued baseline eating routines or inadequate diet quality during the eating window, misalignment of TRE with 24-h activity behaviors, difficulties with self-monitoring, the need to mitigate negative feelings, social situations that discourage TRE, and irregular or idle schedules. Results illustrate that key drivers of adherence differ across individuals and their unique settings and that multiple drivers of behavior should be considered in the successful implementation of TRE. Findings may inform interventions seeking to tailor TRE schedules to fit individuals' diverse behavioral patterns and preferences, thereby optimizing adherence.
