Abstract
The use of commercial disinfectant in combination with other antimicrobial agent such as ZnO nanoparticles to improve disinfection efficacy could be a promising strategy in the control of pathogenic bacteria. In this context, the aim of study was to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of sodium hypochlorite disinfectant, ZnO nanoparticles as well as Mn-, Ce-, and Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles (doping concentrations 10%, 20%, 30%) against gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhimurium, and gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes using the broth microdilution method CLSI M07-A10, while the checkerboard microdilution method was carried out to assess the type interaction of sodium hypochlorite in combination with pure ZnO nanoparticles. The results specified that ZnO nanoparticles were agents that required higher concentrations to inhibit bacterial growth than sodium hypochlorite, whereby a synergistic effect was achieved in their combination. It was also revealed that doping of Mn and Co in ZnO nanoparticles improved antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria. Generally, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of individual treatments (sodium hypochlorite and ZnO nanoparticles) and their combination on initial bacterial adhesion to stainless steel surfaces (AISI 304) exposed to different temperatures (7 °C, 25 °C, 37 °C) and pH (4.5, 7.0, 8.5) using colony-forming units count method. It was evident that ZnO nanoparticles were more effective than sodium hypochlorite in reducing bacterial adherence, while the combined tretmant showed a better effect than any individual treatment alone, highlighting its advantages as a novel disinfectant to prevent bacterial biofilms. Furthermore, data that temperature and pH affected bacterial adhesion provide comprehensive insight how bacteria survive in the food processing environments, which could assist in assessment the risk of contamination.

Abstract
Traditional food technologies, while essential, often face limitations in sensitivity, real-time detection, and adaptability to complex biological systems such as microbial biofilms. These constraints have created a growing demand for more advanced, precise, and non-invasive tools to ensure food safety and quality. In response to these challenges, cross-disciplinary technological integration has opened new opportunities for the food industry and public health, leveraging methods originally developed in other scientific fields. Although their industrial-scale implementation is still evolving, their application in research and pilot settings has already significantly improved our ability to detect and control biofilms, thereby strengthening food safety protocols. Advanced analytical techniques, the identification of pathogenic species and their virulence markers, and the screening of "natural" antimicrobial compounds can now be conceptualized as interconnected elements within a virtual framework centered on "food" and "biofilm". In this short review, starting from the basic concepts of biofilm and associated microorganisms, we highlight a selection of emerging analytical approaches-from optical methods, microfluidics, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and biospeckle techniques to molecular strategies like CRISPR, qPCR, and NGS, and the use of organoids. Initially conceived for biomedical and biotechnological applications, these tools have recently demonstrated their value in food science by enhancing our understanding of biofilm behavior and supporting the discovery of novel anti-biofilm strategies.

Abstract
The widespread and indiscriminate use of biocides poses significant threats to global health, socioeconomic development, and environmental sustainability by accelerating antibiotic resistance. Bacterial resistance development is highly complex and influenced significantly by environmental factors. Increased biocide usage in households, agriculture, livestock farming, industrial settings, and hospitals produces persistent chemical residues that pollute soil and aquatic environments. Such contaminants contribute to the selection and proliferation of resistant bacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), facilitating their dissemination among humans, animals, and ecosystems. In this review, we conduct a critical assessment of four significant issues pertaining to this topic. Specifically, (i) the role of biocides in exerting selective pressure within the environmental resistome, thereby promoting the proliferation of resistant microbial populations and contributing to the global spread of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs); (ii) the role of biocides in triggering transient phenotypic adaptations in bacteria, including efflux pump overexpression, membrane alterations, and reduced porin expression, which often result in cross-resistance to multiple antibiotics; (iii) the capacity of biocides to disrupt bacteria and make the genetic content accessible, releasing DNA into the environment that remains intact under certain conditions, facilitating horizontal gene transfer and the spread of resistance determinants; (iv) the capacity of biocides to disrupt bacterial cells, releasing intact DNA into the environment and enhancing horizontal gene transfer of resistance determinants; and (iv) the selective interactions between biocides and bacterial biofilms in the environment, strengthening biofilm cohesion, inducing resistance mechanisms, and creating reservoirs for resistant microorganisms and ARG dissemination. Collectively, this review highlights the critical environmental and public health implications of biocide use, emphasizing an urgent need for strategic interventions to mitigate their role in antibiotic resistance proliferation.

Abstract
Escherichia coli (E. coli) carrying the transmissible locus of stress tolerance (tLST) are able to overcome numerous environmental challenges. In our in-silico study, we aimed to characterize tLST in terms of its variants in 793 genomes of E. coli from Brazil originating from food, environmental and clinical (animal and human) sources, and to perform a temporal analysis in order to identify the historical moment of its emergence. We also analyzed the presence of two Yersinia high pathogenicity island (HPI) variants in E. coli genomes, describing other genes and accessory for resistance, persistence, mobile elements (plasmids) and sequence types. The prevalence of the tLST was 10% in E. coli from Brazil, predominantly observed in milk-originating genomes, within the prevalent tLSTCP010237 variant. In E. coli from other sources (clinical/environmental), only part of the tLST was present. Remarkably, our temporal analysis pinpointed the emergence of tLST back to around 1914, coinciding with major societal events. Regarding virulence genes, we found a prevalence of 38.5% for HPI of Y. pestis across genomes from all sources. Our global analysis also showed a high diversity of other virulence genes for milk E. coli (+ 100 genes). These genomes also stood out from the overall metadata for presenting a greater variety of resistance genes to other stresses, such as metals, biocides and acids, as well as persistence genes (biofilm formation). This study demonstrated the historical background of E. coli with tLST genes dating back more than 100 years, and the acquisition of a wide range of virulence and resistance genes that allow it to circulate in different environments: from food to clinic or from clinic to food, making this bacterium a pathogen that requires rigorous surveillance and strategic interventions to mitigate potential risks.

Abstract
The meat industry has been significantly threatened by the risks of foodborne microorganisms and biofilm formation on fresh meat and processed products. A microbial biofilm is a sophisticated defensive mechanism that enables bacterial cells to survive in unfavorable environmental circumstances. Generally, foodborne pathogens form biofilms in various areas of meat-processing plants, and adequate sanitization of these areas is challenging owing to the high tolerance of biofilm cells to sanitization compared with their planktonic states. Consequently, preventing biofilm initiation and maturation using effective and powerful technologies is imperative. In this review, novel and advanced technologies that prevent bacterial and biofilm development via individual and combined intervention technologies, such as ultrasound, cold plasma, enzymes, bacteriocins, essential oils, and phages, were evaluated. The evidence regarding current technologies revealed in this paper is potentially beneficial to the meat industry in preventing bacterial contamination and biofilm formation in food products and processing equipment.

Abstract
Biofilm formation allows microorganisms including bacteria to persist on abiotic or biotic surfaces, to resist treatments with biocides (disinfectants and antibiotics) and to evade the immune response in animal hosts much more than they do in the planktonic form. Bacteria able to form biofilm can be troublesome in the dairy industry, both by causing clinical symptoms in livestock and by colonizing milking devices and milk processing equipment, resulting in dairy products of lower quality and sometimes raising serious food safety issues. In fact, most of the bacterial species isolated frequently in the dairy chain have the ability to form biofilm. Common examples include Staphylococcus aureus and other staphylococci that frequently infect mammary glands, but also Bacillus spp., Listeria monocytogenes and Pseudomonas spp. which cause spoilage of dairy products and sometimes foodborne illnesses. The economic losses due to biofilm formation in the dairy industry are considerable, and scientists are constantly solicited to develop new antibiofilm strategies, especially using biocides of natural origin. Although the number of studies in this subject area has exploded in recent years, the in vivo efficacy of most novel approaches remains to be explored. Used alone or to increase the efficacy of disinfectants or antibiotics, they could allow the implementation of strategies having less impact on the environment. Their use is expected to lead to less reliance on antibiotics to treat intramammary infections in dairy farms and to the use of lower concentrations of chemical disinfectants in dairy processing plants.

Abstract
The Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) one of the important food borne pathogen from milk, which was investigated in this study. The isolates were screened for antimicrobial resistance, enterotoxin genes, biofilm formation, spa typing, coagulase gene polymorphism and accessory gene regulator types. The prevalence of S. aureus in milk samples was 34.4% (89/259). Methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was found at 27% (24/89) of the isolates, were classified as community acquired based on SCCmec typing. The 24.71% (22/89) isolates demonstrated multiple antimicrobial resistance (MAR) pattern. However, none of the isolates carried vancomycin and mupirocin resistance genes. The isolates were positive for sea and sed enterotoxin genes and exhibited high frequency of biofilm formation. The High-Resolution Melting and conventional spa typing revealed that the isolates had both animal and community-associated S. aureus clustered origins. Coagulase gene polymorphism and agr typing demonstrated variable genotypic patterns. The finding of this study establishes the prevalence of community associated, enterotoxigenic, biofilm forming and antimicrobial resistance among S. aureus from milk in Chennai city. This emphasizing a potential threat to public health which needs a continuous monitoring system and strategies to mitigate their spread across the food chain and achieve food safety.

Abstract
Marine natural products especially seaweeds have gained much attention to combat biofouling. Ulva lactuca was determined for its antifouling activity and characterized the isolated non-polar metabolite involved. The methanolic crude extract (MCE) of U. lactuca was screened using crystal violet assay against biofilm-forming bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and was further tested on laboratory and field tests. Then, it was fractionated and isolated using Liquid-Liquid Fractionation (LLE) and Column Chromatography (CC). The isolated compound was characterized using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), and Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The current study showed that the growth of biofilm produced by P. aeruginosa was inhibited by MCE at concentrations of 0.0156 mg/mL. The laboratory test indicated UL5% demonstrated a higher bacterial reduction of bacterial colonies with 1.903 × 106 CFU/mL better than blank paint. According to the field test, crude panels of UL5% were successful in reducing the settlement of fouling organisms due to less macrofouler growth compared to blank paint. The isolated compound A4 was identified as hexadecanoic acid (C16H32O2) through NMR with a molecular mass of 256 g/mol detected using LC-MS. The characterization through FTIR obtained functional groups consisting of CH3, CH2, C=O, and OH. Therefore, U. lactuca produced hexadecanoic acid as one of the promising compounds from the seaweed group as an eco-friendly antifouling agent.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica serotype Cerro (S. Cerro) is an emerging Salmonella serotype isolated from cattle, but the association of S. Cerro with disease is not well understood. While comparative genomic analyses of bovine S. Cerro isolates have indicated mutations in elements associated with virulence, the correlation of S. Cerro fecal shedding with clinical disease in cattle varies between epidemiologic studies. The primary objective of this study was to characterize the infection-relevant phenotypes of S. Cerro fecal isolates obtained from neonatal calves born on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, USA. The S. Cerro isolates varied in biofilm production and sensitivity to the bile salt deoxycholate. All S. Cerro isolates were sensitive to sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, and acidic shock. However, S. Cerro isolates were resistant to nitric oxide stress. Two S. Cerro isolates were unable to compete with S. Typhimurium during infection of calf ligated intestinal loops, indicating decreased fitness in vivo. Together, our data suggest that S. Cerro is sensitive to some innate antimicrobial defenses present in the gut, many of which are also used to control Salmonella in the environment. The observed phenotypic variation in S. Cerro isolates from a single farm suggest phenotypic plasticity that could impact infectious potential, transmission, and persistence on a farm.IMPORTANCESalmonella enterica is a zoonotic pathogen that threatens both human and animal health. Salmonella enterica serotype Cerro is being isolated from cattle at increasing frequency over the past two decades; however, its association with clinical disease is unclear. The goal of this study was to characterize infection-relevant phenotypes of S. Cerro isolates obtained from dairy calves from a single farm. Our work shows that there can be variation among temporally related S. Cerro isolates and that these isolates are sensitive to killing by toxic compounds of the innate immune system and those used for environmental control of Salmonella. This work contributes to our understanding of the pathogenic potential of the emerging pathogen S. Cerro.

Abstract
Present study is focused on exploring in vitro antimicrobial activity of ginseng extract (GE) against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes and their biofilm forming ability, then determining its antimicrobial efficiency during the storage (4 and 10 °C) of cooked ground beef contaminated with these pathogens. Results revealed that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for S. aureus, S. typhimurium and L. monocytogenes were 90, 70 and 40 mg/mL, respectively. GE was also able to inhibit biofilm production by S. aureus and L. monocytogenes, whereas S. typhimurium did not produce biofilm with or without GE application. On the other hand, the results of GE aplication in ground beef indicated that GE incorporation at 0.5% or more reduced S. aureus and S. Typhmurium counts in cooked ground beef at the end of 30 d storage at 4 °C (P < 0.05). Using 1% or more GE totally inhibited S. Typhmurium after 15 d storage at 4 °C (P < 0.05). However, GE application did not affect S. aureus or S. Typhmurium counts in cooked ground beef stored at 10 °C. Furthermore, incorporation of 0.5% or more GE generally inhibited L. monocytogenes growth in cooked ground beef at the end of storage at both 4 and 10 °C (P < 0.05). In general, pH was lower in samples with GE than those without GE regardless of differences in the type of tested pathogen, storage time and temperatures (P < 0.05). Although similar aw was generally obtained on processing day, lower aw was observed in GE containing groups at the end of storage for both storage temperatures (P < 0.05). Oxidation reduction potential (ORP) in all groups generally increased during storage at both storage temperatures (P < 0.05). In conclusion, our results demonstrated that GE has an important role in controlling growth of tested pathogens and may be used as a natural agent by the meat industry to inhibit the growth of food-borne pathogens in cooked processed meat products during storage.

Abstract
The gut microbiota is vital to human health, and their biofilms significantly impact intestinal immunity and the maintenance of microbial balance. Certain pathogens, however, can employ biofilms to elude identification by the immune system and medical therapy, resulting in intestinal diseases. The biofilm is formed by extracellular polymorphic substances (EPS), which shield microbial pathogens from the host immune system and enhance its antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, investigating the impact of extracellular polysaccharides released by pathogens that form biofilms on virulence and defence mechanisms is crucial. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of current pathogenic biofilm research, deal with the role of extracellular polymers in the formation and maintenance of pathogenic biofilm, and elaborate different prevention and treatment strategies to provide an innovative approach to the treatment of intestinal pathogen-based diseases.

Abstract
Chronic infections often involve biofilm-based bacteria, in which the biofilm results in significant resistance against antimicrobial agents and prevents eradication of the infection. The physicochemical barrier presented by the biofilm matrix is a major impediment to the delivery of many antibiotics. Previously, PEGylation has been shown to improve antibiotic penetration into biofilms in vitro. In these studies, PEGylating tobramycin was investigated both in vitro and in vivo. Two distinct PEGylated tobramycin molecules were synthesized (mPEG-SA-Tob and mPEG-AA-Tob). Then, in a P. aeruginosa biofilm in vitro model, we found that mPEG-SA-Tob can operate as a prodrug and showed 7 times more effectiveness than tobramycin (MIC80: 14 μM vs.100 μM). This improved biofilm eradication is attributable to the fact that mPEG-SA-Tob can aid tobramycin to penetrate through the biofilm and overcome the alginate-mediated antibiotic resistance. Finally, we used an in vivo biofilm-based chronic pulmonary infection rat model to confirm the therapeutic impact of mPEG-SA-Tob on biofilm-based chronic lung infection. mPEG-SA-Tob has a better therapeutic impact than tobramycin in that it cannot only stop P. aeruginosa from multiplying in the lungs but can also reduce inflammation caused by infections and prevent a recurrence infection. Overall, our findings show that PEGylated tobramycin is an effective treatment for biofilm-based chronic lung infections.

Abstract
A description of new antimicrobial agents suitable for food industries has become necessary, and natural compounds are being considered as promising sources of new active derivatives to be used with the aim of improving food safety. We have previously described desirable antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against foodborne bacteria by analogs to A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs) with a nitro (NO2) group at carbon 6 of the A-ring. We report herein the synthesis of eight additional analogs with chloro and bromo atoms at the A-ring and the systematic study of their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities in order to evaluate their possible application as biocides or food preservatives, as well as to elucidate new structure-activity relationships. The results from this study show that halogenated analogs to natural A-type proanthocyanidins rise above the nitro derivatives previously reported in their antimicrobial activities. Gram-positive bacteria are the most sensitive to all the analogs and combinations assayed, showing MICs from 10 to 50 μg/mL in most cases, as well as reductions in biofilm formation and the disruption of preformed biofilms of at least 75%. Some structure-activity relationships previously described have also been corroborated. Analogs with just one OH group at the B-ring show better antimicrobial activities than those with two OH groups, and those analogs with two or three OH groups in the whole structure are more active than those with four OH groups. In addition, the analogs with two OH groups at the B-ring and chloro at the A-ring are the most effective when antibiofilm activities are studied, especially at low concentrations.

Abstract
Hospital-acquired infections, also known as nosocomial infections, include bloodstream infections, surgical site infections, skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections. According to reports, Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria account for up to 70% of nosocomial infections in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Biofilm production is a main virulence mechanism and a distinguishing feature of bacterial pathogens. Most bacterial pathogens develop biofilms at the solid-liquid and air-liquid interfaces. An essential requirement for biofilm production is the presence of a conditioning film. A conditioning film provides the first surface on which bacteria can adhere and fosters the growth of biofilms by creating a favorable environment. The conditioning film improves microbial adherence by delivering chemical signals or generating microenvironments. Microorganisms use this coating as a nutrient source. The film gathers both inorganic and organic substances from its surroundings, or these substances are generated by microbes in the film. These nutrients boost the initial growth of the adhering bacteria and facilitate biofilm formation by acting as a food source. Coatings with combined antibacterial efficacy and antifouling properties provide further benefits by preventing dead cells and debris from adhering to the surfaces. In the present review, we address numerous pathogenic microbes that form biofilms on the surfaces of biomedical devices. In addition, we explore several efficient smart antiadhesive coatings on the surfaces of biomedical device-relevant materials that manage nosocomial infections caused by biofilm-forming microbial pathogens.

This study evaluates biofilm formation by B. thermosphacta CD337(2) - a strong biofilm producer strain - on three food industry materials (polycarbonate (PC), polystyrene (PS), and stainless steel (SS)). Biofilms were continuously grown under flow at 25 °C in BHI broth in a modified CDC biofilm reactor. Bacterial cells were enumerated by plate counting, and biofilm spatial organization was deciphered by combining confocal laser scanning microscopy and image analysis. The biofilms had the same growth kinetics on all three materials and reach 8log CFU/cm2 as maximal concentration. Highly structured biofilms were observed on PC and PS, but less structured ones on SS. This difference was confirmed by structural quantification analysis using the image analysis software tool BiofilmQ. Biofilm on SS show less roughness, density, thickness and volume. The biofilm 3D structure seemed to be related to the coupon topography and roughness. The materials used in this study do not affect biofilm growth. However, their roughness and topography affect the biofilm architecture, which could influence biofilm behaviour.

Abstract
Mucosa-associated biofilms are associated with many human disease states, but the host mechanisms promoting biofilm remain unclear. In chronic respiratory diseases like cystic fibrosis (CF), Pseudomonas aeruginosa establishes chronic infection through biofilm formation. P. aeruginosa can be attracted to interspecies biofilms through potassium currents emanating from the biofilms. We hypothesized that P. aeruginosa could, similarly, sense and respond to the potassium efflux from human airway epithelial cells (AECs) to promote biofilm. Using respiratory epithelial co-culture biofilm imaging assays of P. aeruginosa grown in association with CF bronchial epithelial cells (CFBE41o-), we found that P. aeruginosa biofilm was increased by potassium efflux from AECs, as examined by potentiating large conductance potassium channel, BKCa (NS19504) potassium efflux. This phenotype is driven by increased bacterial attachment and increased coalescence of bacteria into aggregates. Conversely, biofilm formation was reduced when AECs were treated with a BKCa blocker (paxilline). Using an agar-based macroscopic chemotaxis assay, we determined that P. aeruginosa chemotaxes toward potassium and screened transposon mutants to discover that disruption of the high-sensitivity potassium transporter, KdpFABC, and the two-component potassium sensing system, KdpDE, reduces P. aeruginosa potassium chemotaxis. In respiratory epithelial co-culture biofilm imaging assays, a KdpFABCDE deficient P. aeruginosa strain demonstrated reduced biofilm growth in association with AECs while maintaining biofilm formation on abiotic surfaces. Furthermore, we determined that the Kdp operon is expressed in vivo in people with CF and the genes are conserved in CF isolates. Collectively, these data suggest that P. aeruginosa biofilm formation can be increased by attracting bacteria to the mucosal surface and enhancing coalescence into microcolonies through aberrant AEC potassium efflux sensed by the KdpFABCDE system. These findings suggest host electrochemical signaling can enhance biofilm, a novel host-pathogen interaction, and potassium flux could be a therapeutic target to prevent chronic infections in diseases with mucosa-associated biofilms, like CF.

Abstract
Bacterial biofilms can adhere to various surfaces in the environment with human beings being no exception. Enclosed in a self-secreted matrix which contains extracellular polymeric substances, biofilms are intricate communities of bacteria that play a significant role across various sectors and raise concerns for public health, medicine and industries. These complex structures allow free-floating planktonic cells to adopt multicellular mode of growth which leads to persistent infections. This is of great concern as biofilms can withstand external attacks which include antibiotics and immune responses. A more comprehensive and innovative approach to therapy is needed in view of the increasing issue of bacterial resistance brought on by the overuse of conventional antimicrobial medications. Thus, to oppose the challenges posed by biofilm-related infections, innovative therapeutic strategies are being explored which include targeting extracellular polymeric substances, quorum sensing, and persister cells. Biofilm-responsive nanoparticles show promising results by improving drug delivery and reducing the side effects. This review comprehensively examines the factors influencing biofilm formation, host immune defence mechanisms, infections caused by biofilms, diagnostic approaches, and biofilm-targeted therapies.

Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes (in the meat, fish and seafood, dairy and fruit and vegetable sectors), Salmonella enterica (in the feed, meat, egg and low moisture food sectors) and Cronobacter sakazakii (in the low moisture food sector) were identified as the bacterial food safety hazards most relevant to public health that are associated with persistence in the food and feed processing environment (FFPE). There is a wide range of subtypes of these hazards involved in persistence in the FFPE. While some specific subtypes are more commonly reported as persistent, it is currently not possible to identify universal markers (i.e. genetic determinants) for this trait. Common risk factors for persistence in the FFPE are inadequate zoning and hygiene barriers; lack of hygienic design of equipment and machines; and inadequate cleaning and disinfection. A well-designed environmental sampling and testing programme is the most effective strategy to identify contamination sources and detect potentially persistent hazards. The establishment of hygienic barriers and measures within the food safety management system, during implementation of hazard analysis and critical control points, is key to prevent and/or control bacterial persistence in the FFPE. Once persistence is suspected in a plant, a 'seek-and-destroy' approach is frequently recommended, including intensified monitoring, the introduction of control measures and the continuation of the intensified monitoring. Successful actions triggered by persistence of L. monocytogenes are described, as well as interventions with direct bactericidal activity. These interventions could be efficient if properly validated, correctly applied and verified under industrial conditions. Perspectives are provided for performing a risk assessment for relevant combinations of hazard and food sector to assess the relative public health risk that can be associated with persistence, based on bottom-up and top-down approaches. Knowledge gaps related to bacterial food safety hazards associated with persistence in the FFPE and priorities for future research are provided.

Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most lethal foodborne pathogens, and there is a lack of microorganisms that can strongly inhibit its growth. Safe lactic acid bacteria with probiotic and antibacterial properties are ideal sources of antagonistic bacteria. This study isolated a strain of Lactobacillus plantarum 4-10 that completely killed L. monocytogenes from northeastern Chinese sauerkraut. Probiotic characterization revealed broad-spectrum bacterial inhibition, antagonizing 16 Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and fungal species. After tolerance to simulated intestinal and gastric fluids, the survival rate was >45 %. L. plantarum 4-10 was sensitive to chloramphenicol, doxycycline, erythromycin, and tetracycline, and exhibited good hydrophobicity, auto-aggregation, and co-aggregation. It could disrupt the cell structure when co-cultured with L. monocytogenes and act as a lethal agent within 15 h. Through transcriptomic analysis and validation experiments, we found that L. plantarum 4-10 could inhibit the expression of L. monocytogenes membrane transport-related genes by producing bacteriocins, thus disrupting the cell membrane structure and inhibiting the growth, metabolic viability, and biofilm formation of L. monocytogenes in a short time. In conclusion, L. plantarum 4-10 has good probiotic properties and antibacterial effects and shows excellent research and application prospects as a natural bacteriostat.

Abstract
Objectives Bacterial biofilm is regarded as a significant threat to the production of safe food and the arise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the quorum sensing inhibitory effect of Nepeta curviflora methanolic extract. Methods The effectiveness of the leaves at sub-inhibitory concentrations of 2.5, 1.25, and 0.6 mg/mL on the virulence factors and biofilm formation of P. aeruginosa was evaluated. The effect of N. curviflora methanolic extract on the virulence factors of P. aeruginosa, including pyocyanin, rhamnolipid, protease, and chitinase, was evaluated. Other tests including the crystal violet assay, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), swarming motility, aggregation ability, hydrophobicity and exopolysaccharide production were conducted to assess the effect of the extract on the formation of biofilm. Insight into the mode of anti-quorum sensing action was evaluated by examining the effect of the extract on the activity of N-Acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) and the expression of pslA and pelA genes. Results The results showed a significant attenuation in the production of pyocyanin and rhamnolipid and in the activities of protease and chitinase enzymes at 2.5 and 1.25 mg/mL. In addition, N. curviflora methanolic extract significantly inhibited the formation of P. aeruginosa biofilm by decreasing aggregation, hydrophobicity, and swarming motility as well as the production of exopolysaccharide (EPS). A significant reduction in AHL secretion and pslA gene expression was observed, indicating that the extract inhibited quorum sensing by disrupting the quorum-sensing systems. The quorum-sensing inhibitory effect of N. curviflora extract appears to be attributed to the presence of kaempferol, quercetin, salicylic acid, rutin, and rosmarinic acid, as indicated by LCMS analysis. Conclusion The results of the present study provide insight into the potential of developing anti-quorum sensing agents using the extract and the identified compounds to treat infections resulting from quorum sensing-mediated bacterial pathogenesis.

Abstract
Bacterial biofilm is a major concern of dairy industry due to its association with milk contamination and its derived products. Algerian pasteurized milk shelf-life does not exceed one day, which may reflect the high level of contamination of this product and presence of extracellular enzymes such as lipases and proteases. This work aimed to investigate the microbial biodiversity in milk-processing surfaces of a dairy plant in Algeria. Therefore, stainless steel cylinders were placed in piping system of the dairy system before and after pasteurization of the milk, being removed after 7 days, for biofilm maturation and microorganism isolation and identification by mass spectrometry. Fifty-nine Gram-positive isolates were identified, namely Bacillus altitudinis, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus weithenstephanensis, Enterococcus casseliflavus, Enterococcus faecium, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. In addition, twenty-four Gram-negative isolates were identified, namely Acinetobacter schindleri Enterobacter cloacae, Enterobacter xiangfangensis, Leclercia adecarboxylata, and Raoultella ornithinolytica. Bacterial isolates showed ability for production of extracellular enzymes, being 49 % capable of both proteolytic and lipolytic activities. Milk isolates were tested for the ability to form biofilms on stainless steel. The cell numbers recovered on plate count agar plates from stainless steel biofilms ranged from 3.52 to 6.92 log10 CFU/cm2, being the maximum number detected for Enterococcus casseliflavus. Bacterial isolates showed intermediate and/or resistant profiles to multiple antibiotics. Resistance to amoxicillin, cefoxitin and/or erythromycin was commonly found among the bacterial isolates.

Abstract
Control strategies to minimize pathogenic bacteria in food animal production are one of the key components in ensuring safer food for consumers. The most significant challenges confronting the food industry, particularly in the major poultry and swine sectors, are antibiotic resistance and resistance to cleaning and disinfection in zoonotic bacteria. In this context, bacteriophages have emerged as a promising tool for zoonotic bacteria control in the food industry, from animals and farm facilities to the final product. Phages are viruses that infect bacteria, with several advantages as a biocontrol agent such as high specificity, self-replication, self-limitation, continuous adaptation, low inherent toxicity and easy isolation. Their development as a biocontrol agent is of particular interest, as it would allow the application of a promising and even necessary "green" technology to combat pathogenic bacteria in the environment. However, bacteriophage applications have limitations, including selecting appropriate phages, legal restrictions, purification, dosage determination and bacterial resistance. Overcoming these limitations is crucial to enhance phage therapy's effectiveness against zoonotic bacteria in poultry. Thus, this review aims to provide a comprehensive view of the phage-biosanitation strategies for minimizing persistent Salmonella and Campylobacter bacteria in poultry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biofilms are surface-attached communities of bacteria embedded in an extracellular matrix. This matrix shields the resident cells from desiccation, chemical perturbation, invasion by other bacteria, and confers reduced susceptibility to antibiotics and disinfectants. There is growing evidence that biofilms on medical instruments (especially endoscopes) and environmental surfaces interfere with cleaning and disinfection. METHODS The English literature on the impact of biofilms in medicine was reviewed with a focus on the impact of biofilms on reusable semicritical medical instruments and hospital environmental surfaces. RESULTS Biofilms are frequently present on hospital environmental surfaces and reusable medical equipment. Important health care...associated pathogens that readily form biofilms on environmental surfaces include Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida auris. Evidence has demonstrated that biofilms interfere with cleaning and disinfection. DISCUSSION New technologies such as ..úself-disinfecting..Ñ surfaces or continuous room disinfection systems may reduce or disrupt biofilm formation and are under study to reduce the impact of the contaminated surface environment on health care...associated infections. CONCLUSIONS Future research is urgently needed to develop methods to reduce or eliminate biofilms from forming on implantable medical devices, reusable medical equipment, and hospital surfaces.

Abstract
Bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation on the surfaces of synthetic materials imposes a significant burden in various fields, which can lead to infections in patients or reduce the service life of industrial devices. Therefore, there is increasing interest in imbuing surfaces with antibacterial properties. Bioinspired superhydrophobic surfaces with high water contact angles (>150°) exhibit excellent surface repellency against contaminations, thereby preventing initial bacterial adhesion and inhibiting biofilm formation. However, conventional superhydrophobic surfaces typically lack long-term durability and are incapable of achieving persistent efficacy against bacterial adhesion. To overcome these limitations, in recent decades, dual-function superhydrophobic antibacterial surfaces with both bacteria-repelling and bacteria-killing properties have been developed by introducing bactericidal components. These surfaces have demonstrated improved long-term antibacterial performance in addressing the issues associated with surface-attached bacteria. This review summarizes the recent advancements of these dual-function superhydrophobic antibacterial surfaces. First, a brief overview of the fabrication strategies and bacteria-repelling mechanism of superhydrophobic surfaces is provided and then the dual-function superhydrophobic antibacterial surfaces are classified into three types based on the bacteria-killing mechanism: i) mechanotherapy, ii) chemotherapy, and iii) phototherapy. Finally, the limitations and challenges of current research are discussed and future perspectives in this promising area are proposed.

Abstract
Growing concerns exist regarding human ingestion of contaminated seafood that contains Vibrio biofilms on microplastics (MPs). One of the mechanisms enhancing biofilm related infections in humans is due to biofilm dispersion, a process that triggers release of bacteria from biofilms into the surrounding environment, such as the gastrointestinal tract of human hosts. Dispersal of cells from biofilms can occur in response to environmental conditions such as sudden changes in temperature, pH and nutrient conditions, as the bacteria leave the biofilm to find a more stable environment to colonize. This study evaluated how brief exposures to nutrient starvation, elevated temperature, different pH levels and simulated human media affect Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus biofilm dispersal and processes on and from low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) MPs. Both species were able to adequately disperse from all types of plastics under most exposure conditions. V. parahaemolyticus was able to tolerate and survive the low pH that resembles the gastric environment compared to V. vulnificus. pH had a significantly (p ≤ 0.05) positive effect on overall V. parahaemolyticus biofilm biomass in microplates and cell colonization from PP and PS. pH also had a positive effect on V. vulnificus cell colonization from LDPE and PP. However, most biofilm biomass, biofilm cell and dispersal cell densities of both species greatly varied after exposure to elevated temperature, pH, and nutrient starvation. It was also found that certain exposures to simulated human media affected both V. parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus biofilm biomass and biofilm cell densities on LDPE, PP and PS compared to exposure to traditional media of similar pH. Cyclic-di-GMP was higher in biofilm cells compared to dispersal cells, but exposure to more stressful conditions significantly increased signal concentrations in both biofilm and dispersal states. Taken together, this study suggests that human pathogenic strains of V. parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus can rapidly disperse with high cell densities from different plastic types in vitro. However, the biofilm dispersal process is highly variable, species specific and dependent on plastic type, especially under different human body related environmental exposures.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the potential of the bacterium Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes to adhere to stainless steel discs with differing degrees of surface roughness (Ra = 25.20-961.90 nm). Stainless steel is a material commonly used in the food industry for processing equipment, which is regularly exposed to cleaning procedures. The investigation included the commercial disinfectants hydrogen peroxide/peracetic acid and sodium hypochlorite which were evaluated for their antibacterial and anti-adhesion activity. The adhesion was assessed by the standard plate count method, while the broth microdilution method CLSI M07-A10 was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the disinfectants. Based on the MIC values, both disinfectants exerted significant inhibitory effects with MIC values for hydrogen peroxide/peracetic acid and sodium hypochlorite of 250 µg ml-1 and 500 µg ml-1, respectively. Whereas the MBC values were equal to the MIC for all bacteria except for E. coli with values 2-fold higher than the MIC. Obtained results also revealed that all tested bacteria were able to adhere to stainless steel surfaces, although differences were found for strains and surface roughness. The lowest adhesion rate of each strain was recorded on the roughest stainless steel disc at a Ra of 961.90 nm. Further, at a concentration of 1 MIC, the disinfectant sodium hypochlorite reduced initial bacterial adhesion to stainless steel surfaces to a significantly greater extent than the disinfectant hydrogen peroxide/peracetic acid. These findings are consistent with the results obtained by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis, which indicates the great applicability of the tested disinfectants for the control of bacterial adhesion in the food industry.

Abstract
Microbial biofilms are prevalent in various environments and pose significant challenges to food safety and public health. The biofilms formed by pathogens can cause food spoilage, foodborne illness, and infectious diseases, which are difficult to treat due to their enhanced antimicrobial resistance. While the composition and development of biofilms have been widely studied, their profound impact on food, the food industry, and public health has not been sufficiently recapitulated. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of microbial biofilms in the food industry and their implication on public health. It highlights the existence of biofilms along the food-producing chains and the underlying mechanisms of biofilm-associated diseases. Furthermore, this review thoroughly summarizes the enhanced understanding of microbial biofilms achieved through machine learning approaches in biofilm research. By consolidating existing knowledge, this review intends to facilitate developing effective strategies to combat biofilm-associated infections in both the food industry and public health.

Abstract
Bacteria's ability to withstand the detrimental effects of antimicrobials could occur as resistance or tolerance with the minimum inhibitory concentration, the mutant prevention concentration, and the mutant selection window as salient concepts. Thus, this study assessed the impact of exposure to extremely high doses of ampicillin on the level of persistence and tolerance development in isolates previously exposed to different concentrations of selected antibiotics, biocides, and heavy metals. These isolates were previously exposed to oxytetracycline (OXYTET), amoxicillin (AMX), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), benzalkonium chloride (BAC) 10, dimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) 12 and a combination of all the individual pollutants (ALL). The isolates were exposed to very high concentrations (25 × MIC) of ampicillin, and their tolerance was calculated as the time required to kill 99.9% of the bacterial population (MDK99.9). The MDK99.9 increased by 30 to 50% in test isolates (DADMAC, OXYTET, Zinc = 28 h; BAC, Copper = 30 h; amoxycillin, ALL = 26 h) compared to the untreated control. BAC-exposed isolates decreased from 2.5 × 108 CFU/mL to 2.5 × 104 CFU/mL on the second day, displaying the highest tolerance increase. The tolerance appeared to originate from two sources, i.e., stochastic persistence and genetic-induced persistence, involving multiple genes with diverse mechanisms. The mutant selection window of the isolates to ampicillin, amoxicillin, and oxytetracycline also slightly increased compared to the control, indicating the selective survival of persister cells during the 30-day exposure. These findings indicate that bacterial exposure to sub-inhibitory concentrations of environmental chemical stressors may not always result in the development of antimicrobial resistance but could initiate this process by selecting persisters that could evolve into resistant isolates.

Abstract
We report the ability of the crude biosurfactant (BS B3-15), produced by the marine, thermotolerant Bacillus licheniformis B3-15, to hinder the adhesion and biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 to polystyrene and human cells. First, we attempted to increase the BS yield, optimizing the culture conditions, and evaluated the surface-active properties of cell-free supernatants. Under phosphate deprivation (0.06 mM) and 5% saccharose, the yield of BS (1.5 g/L) increased by 37%, which could be explained by the earlier (12 h) increase in lchAA expression compared to the non-optimized condition (48 h). Without exerting any anti-bacterial activity, BS (300 µg/mL) prevented the adhesion of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus to polystyrene (47% and 36%, respectively) and disrupted the preformed biofilms, being more efficient against S. aureus (47%) than P. aeruginosa (26%). When added to human cells, the BS reduced the adhesion of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus (10× and 100,000× CFU/mL, respectively) without altering the epithelial cells' viability. As it is not cytotoxic, BS B3-15 could be useful to prevent or remove bacterial biofilms in several medical and non-medical applications.

Abstract
Acidovorax citrulli, the causative agent of bacterial fruit blotch, can be divided into two main groups based on factors such as pathogenicity and host species preference. PilA is an important structural and functional component of type IV pili (T4P). Previous studies have found significant differences in pilA DNA sequences between group I and group II strains of A. citrulli. In this study, we characterized pilA in the group I strain pslb65 and the group II strain Aac5. pilA mutants, complementation strains, and cross-complementation strains were generated, and their biological phenotypes were analyzed to identify functional differences between pilA in the two groups. pilA deletion mutants (pslb65-ΔpilA and Aac5-ΔpilA) showed significantly reduced pathogenicity compared with the wild-type (WT) strains; pslb65-ΔpilA also completely lost twitching motility, whereas Aac5-ΔpilA only partially lost motility. In King's B medium, there were no significant differences in biofilm formation between pslb65-ΔpilA and WT pslb65, but Aac5-ΔpilA showed significantly reduced biofilm formation compared to WT Aac5. In M9 minimal medium, both mutants showed significantly lower biofilm formation compared to the corresponding WT strains, although biofilm formation was recovered in the complementation strains. The biofilm formation capacity was somewhat recovered in the cross-complementation strains but remained significantly lower than in the WT strains. The interspecies competitive abilities of pslb65-ΔpilA and Aac5-ΔpilA were significantly lower than in the WT strains; Aac5-ΔpilA was more strongly competitive than pslb65-ΔpilA, and the complementation strains recovered competitiveness to WT levels. Furthermore, the cross-complementation strains showed stronger competitive abilities than the corresponding WT strains. The relative expression levels of genes related to T4P and the type VI secretion system were then assessed in the pilA mutants via quantitative PCR. The results showed significant differences in the relative expression levels of multiple genes in pslb65-ΔpilA and Aac5-ΔpilA compared to the corresponding WT stains. This indicated the presence of specific differences in pilA function between the two A. citrulli groups, but the regulatory mechanisms involved require further study.

Abstract
Microbial spoilage is a major cause of food waste. Microbial spoilage is dependent on the contamination of food from the raw materials or from microbial communities residing in food processing facilities, often as bacterial biofilms. However, limited research has been conducted on the persistence of non-pathogenic spoilage communities in food processing facilities, or whether the bacterial communities differ among food commodities and vary with nutrient availability. To address these gaps, this review re-analyzed data from 39 studies from various food facilities processing cheese (n = 8), fresh meat (n = 16), seafood (n = 7), fresh produce (n = 5) and ready-to-eat products (RTE; n = 3). A core surface-associated microbiome was identified across all food commodities, including Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Staphylococcus, Psychrobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Serratia and Microbacterium. Commodity-specific communities were additionally present in all food commodities except RTE foods. The nutrient level on food environment surfaces overall tended to impact the composition of the bacterial community, especially when comparing high-nutrient food contact surfaces to floors with an unknown nutrient level. In addition, the compositions of bacterial communities in biofilms residing in high-nutrient surfaces were significantly different from those of low-nutrient surfaces. Collectively, these findings contribute to a better understanding of the microbial ecology of food processing environments, the development of targeted antimicrobial interventions and ultimately the reduction of food waste and food insecurity and the promotion of food sustainability.

Abstract
Persistent bacterial infections constitute an enormous challenge for public health. Amongst infections with other bacteria, infections with typhoidal and nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica serovars can result in long-term infections of the human and animal host. Persistent infections that are asymptomatic are difficult to identify and thus can serve as a silent reservoir for transmission. Symptomatic persistent infections are often difficult to treat as they harbor a combination of antibiotic-tolerant and antibiotic-resistant bacteria and boost the spread of genetic antibiotic resistance. In the last couple of years, the field has made some major progress in understanding the role of persisters, their reservoirs as well as their interplay with host factors in persistent Salmonella infections.

Abstract
The eradication of bacterial biofilm represents a crucial strategy to prevent a clinical problem associated with microbial persistent infection. In this study we evaluated the ability of the exopolysaccharide (EPS) B3-15, produced by the marine Bacillus licheniformis B3-15, to prevent the adhesion and biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 on polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride surfaces. The EPS was added at different times (0, 2, 4 and 8 h), corresponding to the initial, reversible and irreversible attachment, and after the biofilm development (24 or 48 h). The EPS (300 µg/mL) impaired the initial phase, preventing bacterial adhesion even when added after 2 h of incubation, but had no effects on mature biofilms. Without exerting any antibiotic activity, the antibiofilm mechanisms of the EPS were related to the modification of the (i) abiotic surface properties, (ii) cell-surface charges and hydrophobicity, and iii) cell-to-cell aggregation. The addition of EPS downregulated the expression of genes (lecA and pslA of P. aeruginosa and clfA of S. aureus) involved in the bacterial adhesion. Moreover, the EPS reduced the adhesion of P. aeruginosa (five logs-scale) and S. aureus (one log) on human nasal epithelial cells. The EPS could represent a promising tool for the prevention of biofilm-related infections.

Abstract
Synthetic surgical meshes are commonly used in abdominal wall reconstruction surgeries to strengthen a weak abdominal wall. Common mesh-related complications include local infection and inflammatory processes. Because cannabigerol (CBG) has both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, we proposed that coating VICRYL (polyglactin 910) mesh with a sustained-release varnish (SRV) containing CBG would prevent these complications. We used an in vitro infection model with Staphylococcus aureus and an in vitro inflammation model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages. Meshes coated with either SRV-placebo or SRV-CBG were exposed daily to S. aureus in tryptic soy medium (TSB) or macrophage Dulbecco's modified eagle medium (DMEM). Bacterial growth and biofilm formation in the environment and on the meshes were assessed by changes in optical density, bacterial ATP content, metabolic activity, crystal violet staining, spinning disk confocal microscopy (SDCM), and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM). The anti-inflammatory effect of the culture medium that was exposed daily to the coated meshes was analyzed by measuring the release of the cytokines IL-6 and IL-10 from LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages with appropriate ELISA kits. Additionally, a cytotoxicity assay was performed on Vero epithelial cell lines. We observed that compared with SRV-placebo, the segments coated with SRV-CBG inhibited the bacterial growth of S. aureus in the mesh environment for 9 days by 86 ± 4% and prevented biofilm formation and metabolic activity in the surroundings for 9 days, with respective 70 ± 2% and 95 ± 0.2% reductions. The culture medium that was incubated with the SRV-CBG-coated mesh inhibited LPS-induced secretion of IL-6 and IL-10 from the RAW 264.7 macrophages for up to 6 days without affecting macrophage viability. A partial anti-inflammatory effect was also observed with SRV-placebo. The conditioned culture medium was not toxic to Vero epithelial cells, which had an IC50 of 25 µg/mL for CBG. In conclusion, our data indicate a potential role of coating VICRYL mesh with SRV-CBG in preventing infection and inflammation in the initial period after surgery.

Abstract
Graphene-based materials have undergone substantial investigation in recent years owing to their wide array of physicochemical characteristics. Employment of these materials in the current state, where infectious illnesses caused by microbes have severely damaged human life, has found widespread application in combating fatal infectious diseases. These materials interact with the physicochemical characteristics of the microbial cell and alter or damage them. The current review is dedicated to molecular mechanisms underlying the antimicrobial property of graphene-based materials. Various physical and chemical mechanisms leading to cell membrane stress, mechanical wrapping, photo-thermal ablation as well as oxidative stress exerting antimicrobial effect have also been thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, an overview of the interactions of these materials with membrane lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids has been provided. A thorough understanding of discussed mechanisms and interactions is essential to develop extremely effective antimicrobial nanomaterial for application as an antimicrobial agent. Graphical abstract

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance is a natural phenomenon and is becoming a huge global public health problem, since some microorganisms not respond to the treatment of several classes of antibiotics. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and synergistic effect of triterpene 3β,6β,16β-trihydroxyilup-20(29)-ene (CLF1) against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis strains. Bacterial susceptibility to CLF1 was evaluated by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assay. In addition, the effect combined with antibiotics (ampicillin and tetracycline) was verified by the checkerboard method. The biofilms susceptibility was assessed by enumeration of colony-forming units (CFUs) and quantification of total biomass by crystal violet staining. The compound showed bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against all Staphylococcal strains tested. The synergistic effect with ampicillin was observed only for S. epidermidis strains. Moreover, CLF1 significantly inhibited the biofilm formation and disrupted preformed biofilm of the all strains. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed changes in the cell morphology and structure of S. aureus ATCC 700698 biofilms (a methicillin-resistant S. aureus strain). Molecular docking simulations showed that CLF1 has a more favorable interaction energy than the antibiotic ampicillin on penicillin-binding protein (PBP) 2a of MRSA, coupled in different regions of the protein. Based on the results obtained, CLF1 proved to be a promising antimicrobial compound against Staphylococcus biofilms.

Abstract
In modern societies, the accumulation of vast amounts of waste Li-ion batteries (WLIBs) is a grave concern. Bioleaching has great potential for the economic recovery of valuable metals from various electronic wastes. It has been successfully applied in mining on commercial scales. Bioleaching of WLIBs can not only recover valuable metals but also prevent environmental pollution. Many acidophilic microorganisms (APM) have been used in bioleaching of natural ores and urban mines. However, the activities of the growth and metabolism of APM are seriously inhibited by the high concentrations of heavy metal ions released by the bio-solubilization process, which slows down bioleaching over time. Only when the response mechanism of APM to harsh conditions is well understood, effective strategies to address this critical operational hurdle can be obtained. In this review, a multi-scale approach is used to summarize studies on the characteristics of bioleaching processes under metal ion stress. The response mechanisms of bacteria, including the mRNA expression levels of intracellular genes related to heavy metal ion resistance, are also reviewed. Alleviation of metal ion stress via addition of chemicals, such as spermine and glutathione is discussed. Monitoring using electrochemical characteristics of APM biofilms under metal ion stress is explored. In conclusion, effective engineering strategies can be proposed based on a deep understanding of the response mechanisms of APM to metal ion stress, which have been used to improve bioleaching efficiency effectively in lab tests. It is very important to engineer new bioleaching strains with high resistance to metal ions using gene editing and synthetic biotechnology in the near future.

Abstract
Biofilms are microbial aggregation membranes that are formed when microorganisms attach to the surfaces of living or nonliving things. Importantly, biofilm properties provide microorganisms with protection against environmental pressures and enhance their resistance to antimicrobial agents, contributing to microbial persistence and toxicity. Thus, bacterial biofilm formation is part of the bacterial survival mechanism. However, if foodborne pathogens form biofilms, the risk of foodborne disease infections can be greatly exacerbated, which can cause major public health risks and lead to adverse economic consequences. Therefore, research on biofilms and their removal strategies are very important in the food industry. Food waste due to spoilage within the food industry remains a global challenge to environmental sustainability and the security of food supplies. This review describes bacterial biofilm formation, elaborates on the problem associated with biofilms in the food industry, enumerates several kinds of common foodborne pathogens in biofilms, summarizes the current strategies used to eliminate or control harmful bacterial biofilm formation, introduces the current and emerging control strategies, and emphasizes future development prospects with respect to bacterial biofilms.

Abstract
Bacterial colonization and biofilm formation are found on nearly all wet surfaces, representing a serious problem for both human healthcare and industrial applications, where traditional treatments may not be effective. Herein, we describe a synergistic approach for improving the performance of antibacterial surfaces based on microstructured surfaces that embed titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs). The surfaces were designed to enhance bacteria entrapment, facilitating their subsequent eradication by a combination of UVC disinfection and TiO2 NPs photocatalysis. The efficacy of the engineered TiO2-modified microtopographic surfaces was evaluated using three different designs, and it was found that S2-lozenge and S3-square patterns had a higher concentration of trapped bacteria, with increases of 70 and 76%, respectively, compared to flat surfaces. Importantly, these surfaces showed a significant reduction (99%) of viable bacteria after just 30 min of irradiation with UVC 254 nm light at low intensity, being sixfold more effective than flat surfaces. Overall, our results showed that the synergistic effect of combining microstructured capturing surfaces with the chemical functionality of TiO2 NPs paves the way for developing innovative and efficient antibacterial surfaces with numerous potential applications in the healthcare and biotechnology market.

Abstract
Microbial contaminations are responsible for many chronic, healthcare, persistent microbial infections and illnesses in the food sector, therefore their control is an important public health challenge. Over the past few years, essential oils (EOs) have emerged as interesting alternatives to synthetic antimicrobials as they are biodegradable, extracted from natural sources and potent antimicrobials. Through their multiple mechanisms of actions and target sites, no microbial resistance has been developed against them till present. Although extensive documentation has been reported on the antimicrobial activity of EOs, comparisons between the use of whole EOs or their active components alone for an antimicrobial treatment are less abundant. It is also essential to have a good knowledge about EOs to be used as alternatives to the conventional antimicrobial products such as chemical disinfectants. Moreover, it is important to focus not only on planktonic vegetative microorganisms, but to study also the effect on more resistant forms like spores and biofilms. The present article reviews the current knowledge on the mechanisms of antimicrobial activities of EOs and their active components on microorganisms in different forms. Additionally, in this review, the ultimate advantages of encapsulating EOs or combining them with other hurdles for enhanced antimicrobial treatments are discussed.

Abstract
Brochothrix thermosphacta is considered as a major spoiler of meat and seafood products. This study explores the biofilm formation ability and the biofilm structural diversity of 30 multi-origin B. thermosphacta strains using a set of complementary biofilm assays (biofilm ring test, crystal violet staining, and confocal laser scanning microscopy). Two major groups corresponding to low and high biofilm producers were identified. High biofilm producers presented flat architectures characterized by high surface coverage, high cell biovolume, and high surface area.

Abstract
The increase in human consumption of animal proteins implies changes in the management of meat production. This is followed by increasingly restrictive regulations on antimicrobial products such as chemical biocides and antibiotics, used in particular to control pathogens that can spread zoonotic diseases. Aligned with the One Health concept, alternative biological solutions are under development and are starting to be used in animal production. Beneficial bacteria able to form positive biofilms and guide surface microbial ecology to limit microbial pathogen settlement are promising tools that could complement existing biosecurity practices to maintain the hygiene of livestock buildings. Although the benefits of positive biofilms have already been documented, the associated fundamental mechanisms and the rationale of the microbial composition of these new products are still sparce. This review provides an overview of the envisioned modes of action of positive biofilms used on livestock building surfaces and the resulting criteria for the selection of the appropriate microorganisms for this specific application. Limits and advantages of this biosecurity approach are discussed as well as the impact of such practices along the food chain, from farm to fork.

Abstract
The controlled-release characteristic of drug delivery systems is utilized to increase the residence time of therapeutic agents in the human body. This study aimed to formulate and characterize salsalate (SSL)-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) prepared using the ionic gelation method and to assess their in vitro release and antibacterial and antibiofilm activities. The optimized CSNPs and CSNP-SSL formulation were characterized for particle size (156.4 ± 12.7 nm and 132.8 ± 17.4 nm), polydispersity index (0.489 ± 0.011 and 0.236 ± 132 0.021), zeta potential (68 ± 16 mV and 37 ± 11 mV), and entrapment efficiency (68.9 ± 2.14%). Physicochemical features of these nanoparticles were characterized using UV-visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction pattern. Scanning electron microscopy studies indicated that CSNPs and CSNP-SSL were spherical in shape with a smooth surface and their particle size ranged between 200 and 500 nm. In vitro release profiles of the optimized formulations showed an initial burst followed by slow and sustained drug release after 18 h (64.2 ± 3.2%) and 48 h (84.6 ± 4.23%), respectively. Additionally, the CSNPs and CSNP-SSL nanoparticles showed a sustained antibacterial action against Staphylococcus aureus (15.7 ± 0.1 and 19.1 ± 1.2 mm) and Escherichia coli (17.5 ± 0.8 and 21.6 ± 1.7 243 mm). Interestingly, CSNP-SSL showed better capability (89.4 ± 1.2% and 95.8 ± 0.7%) than did CSNPs in inhibiting antibiofilm production by Enterobacter tabaci (E2) and Klebsiella quasipneumoniae (SC3). Therefore, CSNPs are a promising dosage form for sustained drug delivery and enhanced antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of SSL; these results could be translated into increased patient compliance.

Abstract
Since the first food-borne outbreak of Salmonella enterica serovar Bareilly in the UK (2010), it has been recognized as a new type of food-borne pathogen in S. enterica. To detect and characterize this new serovar pathogen in South Korea, a total of 175 Salmonella strains was isolated and 31 isolates were identified as S. Bareilly from various food-borne outbreaks between 2014 and 2018. While pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis using XbaI revealed two major groups (A and B) each with two subgroups (A1, A2/B1, B2), average nucleotide identity (ANI), single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), and in silico multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analyses confirmed only two major groups. Interestingly, extended SNP analysis with 67 S. Bareilly strains from outbreaks in other countries revealed that A group strains between 2014 and 2016 shared a close evolutionary relationship with the strains from outside of South Korea; however, the B group strains in 2018 were located in a separate SNP tree branch. These findings suggest that the A group may share common ancestor with the strains of previous outbreaks in the UK or other countries, while the B group is a new genotype. Comparative virulence factor (VF) analysis between the A and B group strains showed that S. Bareilly in the B group has more various than that of the A group. A comparative biofilm formation assay supports for this, which B group strain GG-21 has higher biofilm formation activity than A group strain GG-07. Antibiotic susceptibility test of 31 S. Bareilly strains revealed high susceptibility to 17 tested antibiotics, suggesting that S. Bareilly can be easily treated by antibiotics.

Abstract
AbstractIn the present study we reported, for the first time, the gamma irradiation induced synthesis of chitosan/Au/bioactive glass (CS/Au/BG) nanocomposite. The bioactive glass (BG), with the composition 45% SiO2, 32.5% CaO, 15% Na2O, and 7.5% P2O5 wt% was synthesized through the sol–gel technique. XRD, SEM, EDX, and elemental mapping images were utilized to evaluate the structure of pure BG and CS/Au/BG nanocomposite. The antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated by zone of inhibition (ZOI), minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), growth curve assay, and Ultraviolet irradiation effect. Investigation was carried on the antibiofilm effectiveness. Membrane leakage as well as SEM imaging were used to evaluate the antibacterial reaction mechanism. The crystallite size of CS/Au/BG nanocomposite was determined via Scherer equation as 22.83 nm. CS/Au/BG possessed the most ZOI activity against the tested microbes. The highest inhibition % of BG, and CS/Au/BG nanocomposite was investigated for S. aureus (15.65%, and 77.24%), followed by C. albicans (13.32%, and 64.75%). The quantity of protein leakage was directly-proportional after increasing the concentration of BG, and CS/Au/BG and counted to be 70.58, and 198.25 µg/mL, respectively (after applied 10 mg/mL). The promising results suggested the use of novel CS/Au/BG nanocomposite as an encourage candidate for wastewater treatment application against pathogenic microbes.

Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes forms biofilms on food contact surfaces, a niche from where it dislodges to contaminate food products including fresh produce. Probiotics and their derivatives are considered promising alternative strategies to curb the presence of L. monocytogenes in varied food applications. Nonetheless, studies on their anti-biofilm effects against L. monocytogenes from avocados and cucumbers are sparse. This study screened the biofilm formation capabilities of L. monocytogenes strains Avo and Cuc isolated from the avocado and cucumber fruits respectively, and strain 243 isolated from an avocado processing plant; and evaluated the anti-biofilm effects of cell free supernatants (CFS) of Lactobacillus acidophilus La14 150B, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum B411 and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus ATCC 53103 against their biofilms formed on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and stainless steel. All the L. monocytogenes strains formed biofilms (classified either as moderate or strong biofilm formers) on these materials. The presence of CFS reduced the biofilm formation capabilities of these strains and disrupted the integrity of their pre-formed biofilms. Quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction revealed significant reduction of positive regulatory factor A (prfA) gene expression by L. monocytogenes biofilm cells in the presence of CFS (p < 0.05). Thus, these CFS have potential as food grade sanitizers for control of L. monocytogenes biofilms in the avocado and cucumber processing facilities.
