Abstract
One of the challenges related to food and agriculture industries is the production of waste and by-products. In this study, red pomegranate seeds (PS) was selected as a by-product (from oil extraction) for the production of bioactive hydrolysate (with Alcalase, pancreatin, trypsin and pepsin). The composition of essential (~ 23.3%), hydrophobic (~ 32.9%), antioxidant (~ 13.9%) amino acids, and PER index (~ 2.1) especially in hydrolysates by alcalase (H-Al) indicated the nutritional value, antioxidant activity and high digestibility of hydrolysate. Secondary structures and amide regions (I, II and III) were identified in PS-protein. Enzymolysis led to the improvement of solubility, emulsification and foaming capacity of PS-protein, especially in acidic conditions. The water and oil holding capacity were also affected by the type of proteases. The most biological activities (DPPH, ABTS, OH, NO radicals scavenging, reducing power, total antioxidant and metal-ions chelating activities), also, Angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) (50.1%) and Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-IV) (61.2%) inhibition were achieved through hydrolysis using Alcalase and pancreatin. While, the highest antibacterial effect (E. coli and S. aureus) was obtained after hydrolysis with Alcalase. PS- hydrolysate can be considered as a natural nutritious, functional, antioxidant, preservative, blood pressure lowering and antidiabetic compounds in food formulations and dietary supplements.

Abstract
A hydrolyzed protein is a blend of peptides and amino acids which is the result of hydrolysis by enzymes, acids or alkalis. The Bioactive Peptides (BPs) show important biological roles including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, and anti-hypertensive effects, as well as positive effects on the immune, nervous, and digestive systems. Despite the benefits of BPs, challenges such as undesired organoleptic properties, solubility profile, chemical instability, and low bioavailability limit their use in functional food formulations and dietary supplements. Nanocarriers have emerged as a promising solution for overcoming these challenges by improving the stability, solubility, resistance to gastric digestion, and bioavailability, allowing for the targeted and controlled delivery, and reduction or masking of the undesirable flavor of BPs. This study reviews the recent scientific accomplishments concerning the loading of BPs into various nanocarriers including lipid, carbohydrate and protein based-nanocarriers. A special emphasis is given to their application in food formulations in accordance to the challenges associated with their use.

Abstract
Oat contains a large amount of polysaccharides and peptides, among which oat peptides have the function of reducing blood sugar levels in the body. This paper reviewed the peptides obtained from oat extraction and identification from literature and constructed the corresponding oat peptide database. Based on the DPP4 protein, a virtual screening of the peptide database was performed. One hundred nanosecond molecular dynamics simulations were performed for the six peptides obtained from the screening. The interaction information between different peptide molecules and DPP4 was analyzed from the stable binding conformations after the simulation, and the binding free energy between different peptide molecules and DPP4 was calculated. The results show that the peptide molecules obtained from the virtual screening can all stably bind to the DPP4 protein, among which two peptide molecules have relatively strong affinity with DPP4 and can be used as lead molecules for the subsequent design and modification of DPP4 inhibitors. The simulation results are informative for a deeper understanding of the structural characteristics of DPP4 and the molecular recognition mechanism between DPP4 and oat peptides.

Abstract
Protein hydrolysates with antioxidant potential have been reported to act as adjuvants in preventing and treating type-2 diabetes (T2D). This work investigated the biochemical, antidiabetic, antioxidant potential, and physicochemical properties of chia meal protein hydrolysate (CMPH). Bands smaller than 14 kDa were observed in the electrophoretic profile. The predominant amino acids were hydrophobic and aromatic. CMPH had the potential to inhibit α-amylase (IC50: 1.76 ± 0.13 mg/mL), α-glucosidase (IC50: 0.42 ± 0.13 mg/mL), and DPP-IV (IC50: 0.46 ± 0.14 mg/mL). Antioxidant activity for ABTS (IC50: 0.236 mg/mL), DPPH (8.83 ± 0.52%), and ORAC (IC25: 0.115 mg/mL). Against chia meal protein isolate (CMPI), CMPH has a broad solubility (pH 2-12.46). Particle size (624.5 ± 247.3 nm), low PDI (0.22 ± 0.06), ζ-potential (-31.1 ± 2.5 mV), and surface hydrophobicity (11,183.33 ± 2024.11) and the intrinsic fluorescence peak of CMPH was lower than that of CMPI. CMPH represents an alternative to add value to the agri-food co-product of the chia seed oil industry, generating food ingredients with outstanding antidiabetic and antioxidant potential.

Abstract
Diabetes is a substantial public health issue, while its prevalence continues to rise worldwide, affecting millions of persons between the ages of 20 and 80, the development of new therapeutic classes improving glycemic control and consequently micro and macrovascular complications are needed. Today, diabetes treatment is daily for life, and should not be interrupted. However, insulin secretagogues medications, and exogenous self-administration of insulin provide efficient antidiabetic effects, but their misuse leads to hypoglycemic complications besides other risks, hence the need to look for other natural products not to use solely but in concert with others types of medications. In this review, we will highlight briefly the pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications, then we will report the main bioactive macromolecules derived from various sources of natural products providing anti-diabetic properties. However, further researches need to be carried out to face the limitations hampering the development of effective natural drugs for diabetes treatment.

Abstract
Bioactive compounds play an increasingly prominent role in breeding functional and nutritive fruit crops such as citrus. However, the genomic and metabolic bases for the selection and differentiation underlying bioactive compound variations in citrus remain poorly understood. In this study, we constructed a species-level variation atlas of genomes and metabolomes using 299 citrus accessions. A total of 19 829 significant SNPs were targeted to 653 annotated metabolites, among which multiple significant signals were identified for secondary metabolites, especially flavonoids. Significant differential accumulation of bioactive compounds in the phenylpropane pathway, mainly flavonoids and coumarins, was unveiled across ancestral citrus species during differentiation, which is likely associated with the divergent haplotype distribution and/or expression profiles of relevant genes, including p-coumaroyl coenzyme A 2'-hydroxylases, flavone synthases, cytochrome P450 enzymes, prenyltransferases, and uridine diphosphate glycosyltransferases. Moreover, we systematically evaluated the beneficial bioactivities such as the antioxidant and anticancer capacities of 219 citrus varieties, and identified robust associations between distinct bioactivities and specific metabolites. Collectively, these findings provide citrus breeding options for enrichment of beneficial flavonoids and avoidance of potential risk of coumarins. Our study will accelerate the application of genomic and metabolic engineering strategies in developing modern healthy citrus cultivars.

Abstract
The control of α-glucosidase activity has been associated with managing diabetes. We previously identified three peptides with high bioactive indices derived from protein hydrolysates of fermented spent coffee grounds. In this study, the peptides YGF, GMCC, and RMYRY were synthesized and tested in vitro for their α-glucosidase inhibition activity, complemented by in silico analyses. Two of the three peptides significantly inhibited α-glucosidase activity, with the more efficient peptides being YGF and GMCC (0.42 mg/mL), resulting in decreased enzymatic activity of 95.31% and 89.79%, respectively. These peptides exhibited binding free energies with the α-glucosidase complex of -8.5 and - 6.6 kcal/mol, respectively, through hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions with amino acids from the active site. Pharmacokinetic analysis indicated that YGF and GMCC profiles were unrelated to toxicity. These results underscore the importance of focusing on food waste bioprocessing products to expand the range of alternatives that could aid in diabetes treatment.

Abstract
The diseases caused by excessive sodium intake derived from NaCl consumption have attracted widespread attention worldwide, and many researchers are committed to finding suitable ways to reduce sodium intake during the dietary process. Salt substitute is considered an effective way to reduce sodium intake by replacing all/part of NaCl in food without reducing the saltiness while minimizing the impact on the taste and acceptability of the food. Plant-derived natural ingredients are generally considered safe and reliable, and extensive research has shown that certain plant extracts or specific components are effective salt substitutes, which can also give food additional health benefits. However, these plant-derived salt substitutes (PSS) have not been systematically recognized by the public and have not been well adopted in the food industry. Therefore, a comprehensive review of PSS, including its material basis, flavor characteristics, and taste mechanism is helpful for a deeper understanding of PSS, accelerating its research and development, and promoting its application.

Abstract
Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the primary factor that causes chronic kidney disease and causes increasing mortality and morbidity due to its severe consequences. Isoliquiritigenin (ISL) is the primary element of licorice root that is physiologically active and has antifree radical, antioxidation, and antiapoptotic properties. However, the effect of ISL on DKD is still unclear and needs to be further improved. This study aims to evaluate the renoprotective effects of ISL on diabetes-induced renal injury and explores the underlying mechanisms involved. Male C57BL/6 mice are fed a high-fat diet and then injected with streptozotocin for 2 consecutive days to establish a diabetic model, and high-glucose-treated NRK-52E cells are used to investigate the renoprotective effects of ISL in DKD. The results show that ISL significantly preserves renal function and architecture in DKD. ISL suppresses oxidative stress and reduces ROS levels, inhibiting the activation of the NF-κB and the NLRP3 inflammasome and the occurrence of pyroptosis. Moreover, the study finds that ISL can inhibit the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. In addition, the study confirms the inhibitory effect of ISL on the TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammasome pathway. These observations demonstrate that the natural flavonoid compound ISL can be a promising agent for the treatment of DKD.

Abstract
The scourge of obesity arising from obesogens and poor dieting still ravages our planet as half of the global population may be overweight and obese by 2035. This metabolic disorder is intertwined with type 2 diabetes (T2D), both of which warrant alternative therapeutic options other than clinically approved drugs like orlistat with their tendency of abuse and side effects. In this review, we comprehensively describe the global obesity problem and its connection to T2D. Obesity, overconsumption of fats, the mechanism of fat digestion, obesogenic gut microbiota, inhibition of fat digestion, and natural anti-obesity compounds are discussed. Similar discussions are made for diabetes with regard to glucose regulation, the diabetic gut microbiota, and insulinotropic compounds. The sources and production of anti-obesity bioactive peptides (AOBPs) and anti-diabetic bioactive peptides (ADBPs) are also described while explaining their structure-function relationships, gastrointestinal behaviors, and action mechanisms. Finally, the techno-functional applications of AOBPs and ADBPs are highlighted.

Abstract
Bioactive peptides derived from both exogenous and endogenous origins have been studied extensively to use their beneficial effects in humans and animals. Bioactive peptides exhibit beneficial bodily functions and contribute to a healthy gastrointestinal system by influencing barrier functions, immune responses, and gut microbiota. Gut microbiota is a diverse microbial community that significantly influences the overall well-being and homeostasis of the body. Factors such as diet, age, lifestyle, medication, and environmental circumstances can affect the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota. The disturbances or imbalances in the gut microbiota have been associated with various health problems. The interplays between bioactive peptides and gut microbiota are not fully understood, but bioactive peptides hold promise as modulators of the gut microbiota to promote gut health. Almost all the bioactive research on human health, including the development of therapeutics and nutritional interventions, uses cell culture, even though their direct biofunctional activities can only occur when absorbed in the intestine and into the blood system. This review focuses on the current understanding of bioactive peptides in gut microbiota and their impact and mechanisms on gut and human health. The novelty of this review lies in its comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted interactions between bioactive peptides and gut microbiota, integrating knowledge from diverse disciplines between microbiology and nutrition. By elucidating the underlying mechanisms and identifying current research gaps, this review offers an outlook on the potential of bioactive peptides in promoting gut health and shaping future therapeutic and nutritional interventions.

Abstract
The efficacy of selenium-chelating polypeptides derived from wheat protein hydrolysate (WPH-Se) includes enhancing antioxidant capacity, increasing bioavailability, promoting nutrient absorption, and improving overall health. This study aimed to enhance the bioavailability and functional benefits of exogenous selenium by chelating with wheat gluten protein peptides, thereby creating bioactive peptides with potentially higher antioxidant capabilities. In this study, WPH-Se was prepared with wheat peptide and selenium at a mass ratio of 2:1, under a reaction system at pH 8.0 and 80 °C. The in vitro antioxidant activity of WPH-Se was evaluated by determining the DPPH, OH, and ABTS radical scavenging rate and reducing capacity under different conditions, and the composition of free amino acids and bioavailability were also investigated at various digestion stages. The results showed that WPH-Se possessed significant antioxidant activities under different conditions, and DPPH, OH, and ABTS radical scavenging rates and reducing capacity remained high at different temperatures and pH values. During gastrointestinal digestion in vitro, both the individual digestate and the final digestate maintained high DPPH, OH, and ABTS radical scavenging rates and reducing capacity, indicating that WPH-Se was able to withstand gastrointestinal digestion and exert antioxidant effects. Post-digestion, there was a marked elevation in tryptophan, cysteine, and essential amino acids, along with the maintenance of high selenium content in the gastrointestinal tract. These findings indicate that WPH-Se, with its enhanced selenium and amino acid profile, serves as a promising ingredient for dietary selenium and antioxidant supplementation, potentially enhancing the nutritional value and functional benefits of wheat gluten peptides.

Abstract
Short sequences of amino acids called peptides have a wide range of biological functions and the potential to treat a number of diseases. Bioactive peptides can be derived from different sources, including marine organisms, and synthetic design, making them versatile candidates for production of therapeutic agents. Their therapeutic effects span across areas such as antimicrobial activity, cells proliferation and migration, synthesis of collagen, and more. This current review explores the fascinating realm of bioactive peptides as promising therapeutic agents for skin wound healing. This review focuses on the multifaceted biological effects of specific peptides, shedding light on their potential to revolutionize the field of dermatology and regenerative medicine. It delves into how these peptides stimulate collagen synthesis, inhibit inflammation, and accelerate tissue regeneration, ultimately contributing to the effective repair of skin wounds. The findings underscore the significant role several types of bioactive peptides can play in enhancing wound healing processes and offer promising insights for improving the quality of life for individuals with skin injuries and dermatological conditions. The versatility of peptides allows for the development of tailored treatments catering to specific wound types and patient needs. As continuing to delve deeper into the realm of bioactive peptides, there is immense potential for further exploration and innovation. Future endeavors may involve the optimization of peptide formulations, elucidation of underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms.

Abstract
Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) is one of the most popular nutrition-rich foods and pseudocereal crops of the family Lamiaceae. Chia seeds are a rich source of proteins, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), dietary fibers, and antioxidants. In this study, we present the assembly of the chia reference genome, which spans 303.6 Mb and encodes 48,090 annotated protein-coding genes. Our analysis revealed that ~42% of the chia genome harbors repetitive content, and identified ~3 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 15,380 simple sequence repeat (SSR) marker sites. By investigating the chia transcriptome, we discovered that ~44% of the genes undergo alternative splicing with a higher frequency of intron retention events. Additionally, we identified chia genes associated with important nutrient content and quality traits, such as the biosynthesis of PUFAs and seed mucilage fiber (dietary fiber) polysaccharides. Notably, this is the first report of in-silico annotation of a plant genome for protein-derived small bioactive peptides (biopeptides) associated with improving human health. To facilitate further research and translational applications of this valuable orphan crop, we have developed the Salvia genomics database (SalviaGDB), accessible at https://salviagdb.org.

Abstract
Plant proteins are a good source of active peptides, which can exert physiological effects on the body. Predicting the possible activity of plant proteins and obtaining active peptides with oral potential are challenging. In this study, the potential activity of peptides from Zizyphus jujuba proteins after in silico simulated gastrointestinal digestion was predicted using the BIOPEP-UWM™ database. The ACE-inhibitory activity needs to be further investigated. The actual peptides in mouse intestines after the oral administration of Zizyphus jujuba protein were collected and analyzed, 113 Zizyphus jujuba peptides were identified, and 3D-QSAR models of the ACE-inhibitory activity were created and validated using a training set (34 peptides) and a test set (12 peptides). Three peptides, RLPHV, TVKPGL and KALVAP, were screened using the 3D-QSAR model and were found to bind to the active sites of the ACE enzyme, and their IC50 values were determined. Their values were 6.01, 3.81, and 17.06 μM, respectively. The in vitro digestion stabilities of the RLPHV, TVKPGL, and KALVAP peptides were 82%, 90%, and 78%. This article provides an integrated method for studying bioactive peptides derived from plant proteins.

Abstract
Dietary protein-derived peptides are effective in improving dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia. We previously identified a novel cholesterol-lowering pentapeptide IIAEK from milk beta-lactoglobulin. However, it remains unclear whether IIAEK affects the micellar solubility of cholesterol and the bile acid-binding ability to lower cholesterol. Moreover, there is no direct evidence that IIAEK inhibits intestinal cholesterol absorption and affects hepatic cholesterol and fecal steroid excretion in vivo. Herein, we showed that IIAEK did not affect the micellar solubility of cholesterol and the bile acid-binding ability. However, we found that IIAEK decreased serum and liver cholesterol levels and increased fecal steroid excretion in mice. Interestingly, IIAEK markedly suppressed the intestinal absorption of [3H]-cholesterol in mice. In conclusion, we found that IIAEK ameliorated cholesterol metabolism by suppressing intestinal cholesterol absorption without affecting in vitro micellar solubility of cholesterol and the bile acid-binding ability in mice.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is one of the most serious diseases of our century. The drugs used are limited or have serious side effects. The search for new sources of compounds for effective treatment is relevant. Magnificamide, a peptide inhibitor of mammalian α-amylases, isolated from the venom of sea anemone Heteractis magnifica, can be used for the control of postprandial hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus. Using the RACE approach, seven isoforms of magnificamide were detected in H. magnifica tentacles. The exon-intron structure of magnificamide genes was first established, and intron retention in the mature peptide-encoding region was revealed. Additionally, an α-amylase inhibitory domain was discovered in the mucins of some sea anemones. According to phylogenetics, sea anemones diverge into two groups depending on the presence of β-defensin-like α-amylase inhibitors and/or mucin-inhibitory domains. It is assumed that the intron retention phenomenon leads to additional diversity in the isoforms of inhibitors and allows for its neofunctionalization in sea anemone tentacles. Bioprospecting of sea anemones of the order Actiniaria for β-defensin-like α-amylase inhibitors revealed a diversity of inhibitory sequences that represents a starting point for the design of effective glucose-lowering drugs.

Abstract
Legumes are excellent sources of proteins that can be hydrolysed to generate antidiabetic peptides, which inhibit carbohydrate digestive enzymes. The degree of protein hydrolysis depends on the thermal treatment applied and how it impacts protein denaturation and thus accessibility to enzymes. In this study, α-amylase inhibitory activities of cooked (conventional, pressure, and microwave cooking) and digested (simulated gastrointestinal digestion, GID) green pea, chickpea, and navy beans were evaluated, together with the impact of thermal treatments on peptide profiles after GID. All peptides extracts inhibited α-amylase after cooking and GID, and the peptide fraction <3 kDa was responsible for main activity. In green peas and navy beans, microwave cooking showed the highest impact whereas none thermal treatment highlighted in chickpeas. The peptidomics analysis of the fractions <3 kDa identified a total of 205 peptides, 43 of which were found to be potentially bioactive according to in silico analysis. Also quantitative results evidenced differences in the peptide profile between the type of legume and thermal treatment.

Abstract
Almost 65% of the human protein supply in the world originates from plants, with legumes being one of the highest contributors, comprising between 20 and 40% of the protein supply. Bioactive peptides from various food sources including legumes have been reported to show efficacy in modulating starch digestion and glucose absorption. This paper will provide a comprehensive review on recent in vitro studies that have been performed on leguminous antidiabetic peptides, focusing on the α-amylase inhibitor, α-glucosidase inhibitor, and dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) inhibitor. Variations in legume cultivars and methods affect the release of peptides. Different methods have been used, such as in sample preparation, including fermentation (t, T), germination (t), and pre-cooking; in protein extraction, alkaline extraction, isoelectric precipitation, phosphate buffer extraction, and water extraction; in protein hydrolysis enzyme types and combination, enzyme substrate ratio, pH, and time; and in enzyme inhibitory assays, positive control type and concentration, inhibitor or peptide concentration, and the unit of inhibitory activity. The categorization of the relative scale of inhibitory activities among legume samples becomes difficult because of these method differences. Peptide sequences in samples were identified by means of HPLC/MS. Software and online tools were used in bioactivity prediction and computational modelling. The identification of the types and locations of chemical interactions between the inhibitor peptides and enzymes and the type of enzyme inhibition were achieved through computational modelling and enzyme kinetic studies.

Abstract
Bioactive peptides are short and specific fragments of proteins with a wide range of biological activities that provide health benefits to the host. These natural peptides are safe and nontoxic and do not show any side effects. Nowadays, the production and characterization of bioactive peptides have been a key area of research as they show great potential as nutraceuticals and functional foods. Thus, bioactive peptides are considered next-generation therapeutic agents that can replace pharmaceutical products with profound adverse effects in the near future. So far, proteolytic hydrolysis has been used as the method of choice for the large-scale production of bioactive peptides. Studies have reported that peptides with specific characteristics can be generated using a particular type of protease. Microbial proteases are the predominantly used ones because of the ease in their production and purification. However, recently, plant proteases have gained a renewed interest as they offer diversity and better specificity compared with other proteases. This review highlights the potential of plant proteases for the production of bioactive peptides and also describes the benefits of bioactive peptides as nutraceuticals.

Abstract
The use of natural ingredients for managing diabetes is becoming more popular in recent times due to the several adverse effects associated with synthetic antidiabetic medications. In this study, we investigated the in vitro antidiabetic potential (through inhibition of α-glucosidase (AG) and α-amylase (AA)) of hydrolysates from lupin proteins pretreated with ultrasound and hydrolyzed using alcalase (ACT) and flavourzyme (FCT). We further fractionated ACT and FCT into three molecular weight fractions. Unfractionated ACT and FCT showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher AG (IC50 value = 1.65 mg/mL and 1.91 mg/mL) and AA (IC50 value = 1.66 mg/mL and 1.98 mg/mL) inhibitory activities than their ultrafiltrated fractions, where lower IC50 values indicate higher inhibitory activities. Then, ACT and FCT were subjected to peptide sequencing using LC-MS-QTOF to identify the potential AG and AA inhibitors. Molecular docking was performed on peptides with the highest number of hotspots and PeptideRanker score to study their interactions with AG and AA enzymes. Among the peptides identified, SPRRF, FE, and RR were predicted to be the most active peptides against AG, while AA inhibitors were predicted to be RPR, PPGIP, and LRP. Overall, hydrolysates prepared from lupin proteins using alcalase and flavourzyme may be useful in formulating functional food for managing diabetics.

Abstract
The current bibliometric review evaluated recent papers that researched dietary protein sources to generate antidiabetic bioactive peptides/hydrolysates for the management of diabetes. Scopus and PubMed databases were searched to extract bibliometric data and, after a systematic four-step process was performed to select the articles, 75 papers were included in this review. The countries of origin of the authors who published the most were China (67%); Ireland (59%); and Spain (37%). The journals that published most articles on the subject were Food Chemistry (n = 12); Food & Function (n = 8); and Food Research International (n = 6). The most used keywords were ‘bioactive peptides’ (occurrence 28) and ‘antidiabetic’ (occurrence 10). The most used enzymes were Alcalase® (17%), Trypsin (17%), Pepsin, and Flavourzyme® (15% each). It was found that different sources of protein have been used to generate dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV), α-amylase, and α-glucosidase inhibitory peptides. In addition to antidiabetic properties, some articles (n = 30) carried out studies on multifunctional bioactive peptides, and the most cited were reported to have antioxidant and antihypertensive activities (n = 19 and 17, respectively). The present review intended to offer bibliometric data on the most recent research on the production of antidiabetic peptides from dietary proteins to those interested in their obtention to act as hypoglycemic functional ingredients. The studies available in this period, compiled, are not yet enough to point out the best strategies for the production of antidiabetic peptides from food proteins and a more systematic effort in this direction is necessary to allow a future scale-up for the production of these possible functional ingredients.

Abstract
Biofilm-producing Staphylococcus aureus (SA) strains are frequently found in medical environments, from surgical/ wound sites, medical devices. These biofilms reduce the efficacy of applied antibiotics during the treatment of several infections, such as cystic fibrosis, endocarditis, or urinary tract infections. Thus, the development of potential therapeutic agents to destroy the extra protective biofilm layers or to inhibit the biofilm-producing enzymes is urgently needed. Advanced and cost-effective bioinformatics tools are advantageous in locating and speeding up the selection of antibiofilm candidates. Based on the potential drug characteristics, we have selected one-hundred thirty-three antibacterial peptides derived from insects to assess for their antibiofilm potency via molecular docking against five putative biofilm formation and regulated target enzymes: the staphylococcal accessory regulator A or SarA (PDB ID: 2FRH), 4,4'-diapophytoene synthase or CrtM (PDB ID: 2ZCQ), clumping factor A or ClfA (PDB ID: 1N67) and serine-aspartate repeat protein C or SdrC (PDB ID: 6LXH) and sortase A or SrtA (PDB ID: 1T2W) of SA bacterium. In this study, molecular docking was performed using HPEPDOCK and HDOCK servers, and molecular interactions were examined using BIOVIA Discovery Studio Visualizer-2019. The docking score (kcal/mol) range of five promising antibiofilm peptides against five targets was recorded as follows: diptericin A (-215.52 to -303.31), defensin (-201.11 to -301.92), imcroporin (-212.08 to -287.64), mucroporin (-228.72 to -286.76), apidaecin II (-203.90 to -280.20). Among these five, imcroporin and mucroporin were 13 % each, while defensin contained only 1 % of positive net charged residues (Arg+Lys) projected through ProtParam and NetWheels tools. Similarly, imcroporin, mucroporin and apidaecin II were 50 %, while defensin carried 21.05 % of hydrophobic residues predicted by the tool PEPTIDE. 2.0. Most of the peptides exhibited potential characteristics to inhibit S. aureus-biofilm formation via disrupting the cell membrane and cytoplasmic integrity. In summary, the proposed hypothesis can be considered a cost-effective platform for selecting the most promising bioactive drug candidates within a limited timeframe with a greater chance of success in experimental and clinical studies.

Abstract
Biologically active plant peptides, consisting of secondary metabolites, are compounds (amino acids) utilized by plants in their defense arsenal. Enzymatic processes and metabolic pathways secrete these plant peptides. They are also known for their medicinal value and have been incorporated in therapeutics of major human diseases. Nevertheless, its limitations (low bioavailability, high cytotoxicity, poor absorption, low abundance, improper metabolism, etc.) have demanded a need to explore further and discover other new plant compounds that overcome these limitations. Keeping this in mind, therapeutic plant proteins can be excellent remedial substitutes for bodily affliction. A multitude of these peptides demonstrates anti-carcinogenic, anti-microbial, anti-HIV, and neuro-regulating properties. This article's main aim is to list out and report the status of various therapeutic plant peptides and their prospective status as peptide-based drugs for multiple diseases (infectious and non-infectious). The feasibility of these compounds in the imminent future has also been discussed.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Traditional healers have used medicinal plants to treat snakebite envenomation worldwide; however, mostly without scientific validation. There have been many studies on the therapeutic potential of the natural products against snake envenomation. AIM OF THE STUDY This review has highlighted snake venom inhibitory activity of bioactive compounds and peptides from plants that have found a traditional use in treating snakebite envenomation. We have systematically reviewed the scenario of different phases of natural snake venom inhibitors characterization covering a period from 1994 until the present and critically analysed the lacuna of the studies if any, and further scope for their translation from bench to bedside. MATERIALS AND METHODS The medicinal plant-derived compounds used against snakebite therapy were reviewed from the available literature in public databases (Scopus, MEDLINE) from 1994 till 2020. The search words used were 'natural inhibitors against snakebite,' 'natural products as therapeutics against snakebite,' 'natural products as antidote against snake envenomation,' ' snake venom toxin natural inhibitors,' 'snake venom herbal inhibitors'. However, the scope of this review does not include computational (in silico) predictions without any wet laboratory validation and snake venom inhibitory activity of the crude plant extracts. In addition, we have also predicted the ADMET properties of the identified snake venom inhibitors to highlight their valuable pharmacokinetics for future clinical studies. RESULTS The therapeutic application of plant-derived natural inhibitors to treat snakebite envenomation as an auxiliary to antivenom therapy has been gaining significant momentum. Pharmacological reassessment of the natural compounds derived from traditional medicinal plants has demonstrated inhibition of the principal toxic enzymes of snake venoms at various extents to curb the lethal and/or deleterious effects of venomous snakebite. Nevertheless, such molecules are yet to be commercialized for clinical application in the treatment of snakebite. There are many obstacles in the marketability of the plant-derived natural products as snake envenomation antidote and strategies must be explored for the translation of these compounds from drug candidates to their clinical application. CONCLUSION In order to minimize the adverse implications of snake envenomation, strategies must be developed for the smooth transition of these plant-derived small molecule inhibitors from bench to bedside. In this article we have presented an inclusive review and have critically analysed natural products for their therapeutic potential against snake envenomation, and have proposed a road map for use of natural products as antidote against snakebite.

Abstract
The field of peptides and proteins has opened up new doors for plant-based medication development because of analytical breakthroughs. Enzymatic breakdown of plant-specific proteins yields bioactive peptides. These plant-based proteins and peptides, in addition to their in vitro and vivo outcomes for diabetes treatment, are discussed in this study. The secondary metabolites of vegetation can interfere with the extraction, separation, characterization, and commercialization of plant proteins through the pharmaceutical industry. Glucose-lowering diabetic peptides are a hot commodity. For a wide range of illnesses, bioactive peptides from flora can offer up new avenues for the development of cost-effective therapy options.

Abstract
Nowadays, the search for food-suitable plant proteins is a great challenge. In addition to their sustainability and nutritional value, the focus is more and more on possible positive interactions with human health. To date, the presence of bioactive peptides encrypted in the structure of protein opens new perspectives, addressing the food industry’s request for new ingredients with technological properties and also the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical sectors based on multifunctional health applications. Lupinus is a sustainable genus of the legume family Fabaceae, and the lupin seed-derived bioactive peptides have demonstrated different effects including anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidant, antibacterial, hypocholesterolemic, and antihypertensive activities. This review aims to discuss the current knowledge on lupin protein and their bioactive peptides, highlighting the documented health claims, but also the possibility of allergenicity and the work to be done for the development of new functional products.

Abstract
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the most important cause of middle and late-stage chronic kidney disease. Green tea polypeptides are extracted from tea pomace, and exhibit various pharmacological effects. In this study, we analyzed the reno-protective effects of green tea peptides in diabetic db/db mice, and explored the underlying mechanisms. Peptide treatment for 5 weeks significantly reduced the blood glucose levels and other indices of diabetes, and alleviated renal injury measured in terms of blood creatinine, urea nitrogen and urinary albumin/urinary creatinine levels. Mechanistically, the green tea peptides downregulated p-Smad2/3, α-SMA, ZO-1 and vimentin proteins in the kidney tissues, and elevated Smad7. Thus, green tea peptides inhibited the deposition of ECM proteins by suppressing excessive activation of the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway and reducing fibronectin levels. On the other hand, tea peptides ameliorated renal injury by inhibiting the production of inflammatory factors (iNOS and TNF-α) by suppressing the NF-κB signaling pathway. In addition, we confirmed the inhibitory effect of green tea peptides on the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway in TGF-β1-stimulated HK-2 cells. Therefore, tea peptides can be considered as an effective candidate for alleviating DN.

Abstract
Bioactive peptides are a group of biological molecules that are normally buried in the structure of parent proteins and become active after the cleavage of the proteins. Another group of peptides is actively produced and found in many microorganisms and the body of organisms. Today, many groups of bioactive peptides have been marketed chemically or recombinantly. This article reviews the various production methods and sources of these important/ubiquitous and useful biomolecules. Their applications, such as antimicrobial, antihypertensive, antioxidant activities, blood-lipid-lowering effect, opioid role, antiobesity, ability to bind minerals, antidiabetic, and antiaging effects, will be explored. The types of pathways proposed for bioactive applications will be in the next part of the article, and at the end, the future perspectives of bioactive peptides will be reviewed. Reading this article is recommended for researchers interested in various fields of physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, and nanotechnology and food industry professionals.

Abstract
Our global population is growing at a pace to exceed 10 billion people by the year 2050. This growth will place pressure on the agricultural production of food to feed the hungry masses. One category that will be strained is protein. Per capita protein consumption is rising in virtually every country for both nutritional reasons and consumption enjoyment. The United Nations estimates protein demand will double by 2050, and this will result in a critical overall protein shortage if drastic changes are not made in the years preceding these changes. Therefore, the world is in the midst of identifying technological breakthroughs to make protein more readily available and sustainable for future generations. One protein sourcing category that has grown in the past decade is plant-based proteins, which seem to fit criteria established by discerning consumers, including healthy, sustainable, ethical, and relatively inexpensive. Although demand for plant-based protein continues to increase, these proteins are challenging to utilize in novel food formulations. Abstract
Alzheimer's disease is inflating worldwide and is combatted by only a few approved drugs. At best, these drugs treat symptomatic conditions by targeting cholinesterase and N-methyl- D-aspartate receptors. Most of the clinical trials in progress are focused on developing disease-modifying agents that aim at single targets. The 'one drug-one target' approach is failing in the case of Alzheimer's disease due to its labyrinth etiopathogenesis. Traditional medicinal systems like Ayurveda use a holistic approach encompassing the legion of medicinal plants exhibiting multimodal activity. Recent advances in high-throughput technologies have catapulted the research in the arena of Ayurveda, specifically in identifying plants with potent anti-Alzheimer's disease properties and their phytochemical characterization. Nonetheless, clinical trials of very few herbal medicines are in progress. This review is a compendium of Indian plants and ayurvedic medicines against Alzheimer's disease and their paraphernalia. A record of 230 plants that are found in India with anti-Alzheimer's disease potential and about 500 phytochemicals from medicinal plants have been solicited with the hope of exploring the unexplored. Further, the molecular targets of phytochemicals isolated from commonly used medicinal plants, such as Acorus calamus, Bacopa monnieri, Convolvulus pluricaulis, Tinospora cordifolia and Withania somnifera, have been reviewed with respect to their multidimensional property, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-aggregation, synaptic plasticity modulation, cognition, and memory-enhancing activity. In addition, the strengths and challenges in ayurvedic medicine that limit its use as mainstream therapy are discussed, and a framework for the development of herbal medicine has been proposed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the present scenario, diabetes is a growing health challenge, and its occurrence is growing across the globe. Diabetes, with its complications like diabetic wounds, vasculopathy, neuropathy, wound infections, and oxidative stress, is a serious cause of mortality worldwide. INTRODUCTION Among the various complications, treatment of diabetic foot and ulcers is one of the major concerns in patients who are suffering from diabetes. The causative factors for this condition include increased oxidative stress, high blood glucose levels, vascular insufficiency, and microbial infections, and many a time, if left untreated, it may even lead to amputations of the lower extremities. The present therapy for the treatment of diabetic wounds mainly involves the use of synthetic moieties and other biotechnology-derived biomolecules, including growth factors. Few plant products are also useful in the treatment of wounds. METHODS Essential oils derived from various herbs are reported to possess significant wound healing potential and promote blood clotting, help to fight infections, and accelerate the wound healing process. Hence, the present review is a systematic analysis of all the available data on the use of the natural oils with their biological source, active phytochemical constituents present, and the probable mechanism of action for the treatment of chronic and diabetic wounds in suitable animal models. A methodical collection of data was performed, and information was searched up to April 2020 in entirety. Key phrases used for the data search include the pathophysiology of wounds, diabetic foot wound and its complications, natural oils for chronic and diabetic wound treatment. RESULTS This review summarizes the natural oils which are reported in the literature to be beneficial in the treatment of chronic wounds, while some oils have been specifically also studied against wounds in diabetic rats. Essential oils are said to interact with the body pharmacologically, physiologically and psychologically and help in rapid wound healing. However, the majority of the literature studies have demonstrated wound healing activity only in animal models (preclinical data), and further clinical studies are necessary. CONCLUSION This review provides a platform for further studies on the effective utilization of natural oils in the treatment of chronic and diabetic wounds, especially if oils are to receive credibility in the management of chronic wounds.

Abstract
Lentil (Lens culinaris; Fabaceae), one of the major pulse crops in the world, is an important source of proteins, prebiotics, lipids, and essential minerals as well as functional components such as flavonoids, polyphenols, and phenolic acids. To improve crop nutritional and medicinal traits, hybridization and mutation are widely used in plant breeding research. In this study, mutant lentil populations were generated by γ-irradiation for the development of new cultivars by inducing genetic diversity. Molecular networking via Global Natural Product Social Molecular Networking web platform and dipeptidyl peptide-IV inhibitor screening assay were utilized as tools for structure-based discovery of active components in active mutant lines selected among the lentil population. The bioactivity-based molecular networking analysis resulted in the annotation of the molecular class of phosphatidylcholine (PC) from the most active mutant line. Among PCs, 1-stearoyl-2-hydroxy-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (18:0 Lyso PC) was selected for further in vivo study of anti-obesity effect in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mouse model. The administration of 18:0 Lyso PC not only prevented body weight gain and decreased relative gonadal adipose tissue weight, but also attenuated the levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and leptin in the sera of HFD-induced obese mice. Additionally, 18:0 Lyso PC treatment inhibited the increase of adipocyte area and crown-like structures in adipose tissue. Therefore, these results suggest that 18:0 Lyso PC is a potential compound to have protective effects against obesity, improving obese phenotype induced by HFD.

Abstract
Nowadays, biopeptides have gained considerable interest by the food industries, given their potent biological effect on health. BPs, when released from the sequence of their precursors by proteolytic enzymes, improved the various physiological functions of the body. Diabetic and hypertension are the two most common life-threatening diseases linked to dietary patterns. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) (hypertension-responsible glycoprotein) and dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) (proline-specific dimeric aminopeptidase) have been widely used as molecular target sites of action of bioactive compounds possessing antihypertensive and antidiabetic effects. Although, BPs possess considerable biological properties (antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, immunomodulating, antiproliferative, antidiabetic, and antihypertensive effects), most of them possess inherent lacunae such as toxicity, allergenicity, bitterness, and lack of detailed mechanistic investigation, limiting their commercial application. The present review provides an overview on various sources of bioactive peptides, conventional and modern methods of extraction, and challenges that need to be addressed before its commercial application. In addition, bioinformatics' role in exploring the functional properties of biopeptides (ACE and DPP-IV inhibitory effects) toxicity, the target site of action with special reference to plant-based peptides, and recent burgeoning proficiencies in biopeptide research have been discussed.

Abstract
Bioactive peptides (BPs) are 3-20 amino acid residues, with a molecular weight lower than 6 kDa; originated from the breakdown of proteins by endogenous and exogenous peptidases. While intact in protein these peptides do not exert any biological activity, but as they release from their parent protein, they exert various pharmacological activities such as antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anticancerous, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory. Such peptides exist in all living organism like plants, animals, marine organism and also present in food products derived from them. BPs obtained from dairy food products, cereals, vegetables have been gaining much more importance now-a-days, but little work has been done on bioactive peptides obtained from medicinal plants. Some of the medicinal plants such as Tinospora cordifolia Sterculia foetida, Benincasa hispida, Parkia speciosa, Linum usitatissimum, Salvia hispanica and Ziziphus jujube have been explored for bioactive peptides. Current review is aimed to provide a complete information of medicinal plants derived BPs along with the surge of new materials, new plants which will provide more solutions for handling some of the major human health problems of twenty-first century. This review will also be helpful to researchers in providing valuable information about the extraction, separation, characterization of BPs, their known peptide sequences and various pharmacological activities exerted by medicinal plants-derived bioactive peptides.

Abstract
There is a renewed interest on the reliance of food-based bioactive compounds as sources of nutritive factors and health-beneficial chemical compounds. Among these food components, several proteins from foods have been shown to promote health and wellness as seen in proteins such as α/γ-conglutins from the seeds of Lupinus species (Lupin), a genus of leguminous plant that are widely used in traditional medicine for treating chronic diseases. Lupin-derived peptides (LDPs) are increasingly being explored and they have been shown to possess multifunctional health improving properties. This paper discusses the intestinal transport, bioavailability and biological activities of LDPs, focusing on molecular mechanisms of action as reported in in vitro, cell culture, animal and human studies. The potentials of several LDPs to demonstrate multitarget mechanism of regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism, chemo- and osteoprotective properties, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities position LDPs as good candidates for nutraceutical development for the prevention and management of medical conditions whose etiology are multifactorial.

Abstract
The immune function of the human body is highly influenced by the dietary intake of certain nutrients and bioactive compounds present in foods. The preventive effects of these bioactive ingredients against various diseases have been well investigated. Functional foods are consumed across various diverse cultures, in some form or the other, which provide benefits greater than the basic nutritional needs. Novel functional foods are being developed using novel bioactive ingredients such as probiotics, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and various phytoconstituents, which have a range of immunomodulatory properties. Apart from immunomodulation, these ingredients also affect immunity by their antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. The global pandemic of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 has forced the scientific community to race against time to find a proper and effective drug or a vaccine. In this review, various non-pharmacological interventions using nutraceuticals and functional foods have been discussed. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Despite a plethora of research being undertaken to understand the immunity boosting properties of the various bioactive present in food, the findings are not translating to nutraceutical products in the market. Immunity has proved to be one of the most important factors for the health and well-being of an individual, especially when the world has been under the grip of the novel coronavirus Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2. The anti-inflammatory properties of various nutraceuticals can come out as potential inhibitors of the various inflammatory processes such as cytokine storms, usually being observed in COVID 19. This review gives an insight into how various nutraceuticals can help in the prevention of various diseases through different mechanisms. The lack of awareness and proper clinical trials pose a challenge to the nutraceutical industry. This review will help and encourage researchers to further design and develop various functional foods, which might help in building immunity.

Abstract
Warionia saharae Benth. & Coss. (Asteraceae) is an endemic species of North Africa naturally grown in the southwest of the Algerian Sahara. In the present study, this species’ hydromethanolic leaf extract was investigated for its phenolic profile characterized by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a diode array detector and an electrospray mass spectrometer (UHPLC-DAD-ESI/MS). Additionally, the chemical composition of W. saharae was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and its antioxidant potential was assessed through five in vitro tests: DPPH● scavenging activity, ABTS●+ scavenging assay, galvinoxyl scavenging activity, ferric reducing power (FRP), and cupric reducing antioxidant capacity. The UHPLC-DAD-ESI/MS analysis allowed the detection and quantification of 22 compounds, with taxifolin as the dominant compound. The GC–MS analysis allowed the identification of 37 compounds, and the antioxidant activity data indicate that W. saharae extract has a very high capacity to capture radicals due to its richness in compounds with antioxidant capacity. The extract also showed potent α-glucosidase inhibition as well as a good anti-inflammatory activity. However, weak anti-α-amylase and anticholinesterase activities were recorded. Moreover, an in silico docking study was performed to highlight possible interactions between three significant compounds identified in W. saharae extract and α-glucosidase enzyme.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a major public health concern associated with high mortality and reduced life expectancy. The alarming rise in the prevalence of diabetes is linked to several factors including sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet. Nutritional intervention and increased physical activity could significantly contribute to bringing this under control. Food-derived bioactive peptides and protein hydrolysates have been associated with a number health benefits. Several peptides with antidiabetic potential have been identified that could decrease blood glucose level, improve insulin uptake and inhibit key enzymes involved in the development and progression of diabetes. Dietary proteins, from a wide range of food, are rich sources of antidiabetic peptides. Thus, there are a number of benefits in studying peptides obtained from food sources to develop nutraceuticals. A deeper understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms of these peptides will assist in the development of new peptide-based therapeutics. Despite this, a comprehensive analysis of the antidiabetic properties of bioactive peptides derived from various food sources is still lacking. Here, we review the recent literature on food-derived bioactive peptides possessing antidiabetic activity. The focus is on the effectiveness of these peptides as evidenced by in vitro and in vivo studies. Finally, we discuss future prospects of peptide-based drugs for the treatment of diabetes.

Abstract
Dysregulated glucose metabolism is associated with many chronic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and strategies to restore and maintain glucose homeostasis are essential to health. The incretin hormone of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is known to play a critical role in regulating glucose homeostasis and dietary nutrients are the primary stimuli to the release of intestinal GLP-1. However, the GLP-1 producing enteroendocrine L-cells are mainly distributed in the distal region of the gastrointestinal tract where there are almost no nutrients to stimulate the secretion of GLP-1 under normal situations. Thus, a dietary strategy to sustain the release of GLP-1 was proposed, and the slow digestion property and dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) inhibitory activity of food components, approaches to reduce the rate of food digestion, and mechanisms to sustain the release of GLP-1 were reviewed. A slow digestion-oriented dietary approach through encapsulation of nutrients, incorporation of viscous dietary fibers, and enzyme inhibitors of phytochemicals in a designed whole food matrix will be implemented to efficiently reduce the digestion rate of food nutrients, potentiate their distal deposition and a sustained secretion of GLP-1, which will be beneficial to improved glucose homeostasis and health.

Abstract
Plant protein-derived peptides, focusing especially on soybean protein-derived peptides have considerable effects on metabolic regulation and modulation such as cholesterol lowering, triglyceride lowering, anti-obesity, inhibition of fatty acid synthase, and antidiabetic effects. The molecules targeted to study the metabolic regulatory functions of the peptides included the following: intestinal cholesterol micelle, cholesterol metabolism-related genes for cholesterol lowering, triglyceride metabolism-related genes for triglyceride lowering and anti-obesity, dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV), α-amylase, α-glucosidase, or glucose metabolism-related genes for lowering blood glucose levels. This review article outlines the physiological functions of plant protein-derived peptides for the improvement of lipid and glucose metabolism in vitro or in vivo.

Abstract
Astrocytes are crucial for the maintenance of brain homeostasis by actively participating in the metabolism of glucose, which is the main energy substrate for the central nervous system (CNS), in addition to other supportive functions. More specifically, astrocytes support neurons through the metabolic coupling of synaptic activity and glucose utilization. As such, diabetes mellitus (DM) and consequent glucose metabolism disorders induce astrocyte damage, affecting CNS functionality. Glioprotective molecules can promote protection by improving glial functions and avoiding toxicity in different pathological conditions, including DM. Therefore, this review discusses specific pathomechanisms associated with DM/glucose metabolism disorder-induced gliotoxicity, namely astrocyte metabolism, redox homeostasis/mitochondrial activity, inflammation, and glial signaling pathways. Studies investigating natural products as potential glioprotective strategies against these deleterious effects of DM/glucose metabolism disorders are also reviewed herein. These products include carotenoids, catechins, isoflavones, lipoic acid, polysaccharides, resveratrol, and sulforaphane.

Abstract
Bioactive peptides have recently gained more research attention as potential therapies for the management of bodily disorders and metabolic syndromes of delicate health importance. On another note, there is a rising trend on a global scale for the consumption and adoption of fruit and vegetables for the fulfilment of dietary and health needs. Furthermore, fruits and vegetables are being more studied as base materials for the isolation of biologically functional components and accordingly, they have been investigated for their concomitant bioactive peptides. This review focuses on isolation and bio-functional properties of bioactive peptides from fruits and vegetables. This manuscript is potential in serving as a material collection for fundamental consultancy on peptides derived from fruits and vegetables, and further canvasses the necessitation for the use of these food materials as primal matter for such.

Abstract
Large numbers of bioactive peptides with potential applications in protecting against human diseases have been identified from plant sources. In this review, we summarized recent progress in the research of plant-derived bioactive peptides, encompassing their production, biological effects, and mechanisms. This review focuses on antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and anticancer peptides, giving special attention to evidence derived from cellular and animal models. Studies investigating peptides with known sequences and well-characterized peptidic fractions or protein hydrolysates will be discussed. The use of molecular docking tools to elucidate inter-molecular interactions between bioactive peptides and target proteins is highlighted. In conclusion, the accumulating evidence from in silico, in vitro and in vivo studies to date supports the envisioned applications of plant peptides as natural antioxidants as well as health-promoting agents. Notwithstanding, much work is still required before the envisioned applications of plant peptides can be realized. To this end, future researches for addressing current gaps were proposed.

Abstract
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a gastrointestinal hormone released from enteroendocrine L cells in response to meal ingestion. GLP-1 receptor agonists and GLP-1 enhancers have been clinically employed to treat diabetes owing to their glucose-dependent insulin-releasing activity. The release of GLP-1 is primarily stimulated by macronutrients such as glucose and fatty acids, which are nutritionally indispensable; however, excessive intake of sugar and fat is responsible for the development of obesity and diabetes. Therefore, GLP-1 releasing food factors, such as dietary peptides and non-nutrients, are deemed desirable for improving glucose tolerance. Human and animal studies have revealed that dietary proteins/peptides have a potent effect on stimulating GLP-1 secretion. Studies in enteroendocrine cell models have shown that dietary peptides, amino acids, and phytochemicals, such as quercetin, can directly stimulate GLP-1 secretion. In our animal experiments, these food factors improved glucose metabolism and increased GLP-1 secretion. Furthermore, some dietary peptides not only stimulated GLP-1 secretion but also reduced plasma peptidase activity, which is responsible for GLP-1 inactivation. Herein, we review the relationship between GLP-1 and food factors, especially dietary peptides and flavonoids. Accordingly, utilization of food factors with GLP-1-releasing/enhancing activity is a promising strategy for preventing and treating obesity and diabetes.
