Abstract
BACKGROUND Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disease with unknown etiology. Poor dietary intake with nutritional deficiency and overweight have been described to increase the risk of IBS. The aim of the present study was to compare weight and circulating levels of micronutrients in IBS compared with healthy controls. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS Patients diagnosed with IBS and healthy volunteers were recruited. Participants had to complete a dietary diary book and the questionnaires Rome IV, IBS-severity scoring system (IBS-SSS), and visual analog scale for IBS (VAS-IBS). Weight and height were measured, and blood samples were drawn. C-reactive protein (CRP), cobalamin, folate, iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and 25-hydroxy (25-OH) vitamin D were analyzed. Differences were calculated between groups and generalized linear model for regressions was adjusted for false discovery rate (FDR). RESULTS IBS patients (n = 260) were elder than controls (n = 50) (44.00 (33.25-56.00) vs. 37.85 (30.18-45.48) years; p = 0.012). After adjustment for age, both weight (β: 5.880; 95% CI: 1.433-10.327; p = 0.010, FDR = 0.020) and body mass index (BMI) (β: 2.02; 95% CI: 0.68-3.36; p = 0.003, FDR = 0.012) were higher in patients. Among IBS participants, 48.1% were overweight/obese compared with 26.0% in controls (p = 0.007). Diarrhea-predominated IBS had highest weight (p < 0.001) and BMI (p = 0.077). CRP and cobalamin were higher in patients than controls (p = 0.010 vs. p = 0.007), whereas folate was highest in controls (p = 0.001). IBS patients had lower intake of vegetables (p = 0.026), dairy products (p = 0.004), and cereals (p = 0.010) compared with controls. Despite 21.5% of IBS patients were taking vitamin D supplements, 23.65% of them had vitamin D levels below 50 nmol/L, compared with 26.0% observed in the control group (p = 0.720). Vitamin D levels were lower in overweight than in normal weight IBS patients (60 (48-73) nmol/L vs. 65 (53-78) nmol/L, p = 0.022). Vitamin D correlated with cobalamin and folate but correlated inversely with TIBC and BMI. IBS patients had a high degree of gastrointestinal and extraintestinal symptoms, which were inversely associated with iron levels. Extraintestinal symptoms were associated with increased BMI. CONCLUSION IBS patients were often overweight or obese, with low vitamin D levels. High burden of extraintestinal symptoms were associated with overweight and lower iron levels. Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder among women. Dyslipidemia is a prevalent metabolic abnormality in individuals with PCOS. Moreover, vitamin D deficiency is widespread across all societal strata, with a particularly heightened prevalence observed in patients afflicted with PCOS. The present study aimed to investigate the level of vitamin D and its correlation with lipid profiles in Iranian women diagnosed with PCOS. METHODS This cross-sectional study was carried out at the PCOS and infertility clinic of Arash Women's Hospital in Tehran. The study encompassed the medical records of PCOS patients who attended the clinic from March 2021 to December 2023. All patients underwent blood tests, which included assessments of fasting blood sugar levels, lipid profiles, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels. The investigation focused on evaluating the relationship between vitamin D levels and lipid profiles. Statistical analyses, including the chi-square test and Spearman's correlation coefficient, were employed to analyze the data. RESULTS A total of 1004 women diagnosed with PCOS were included in the study. The age range of the participants was 14 to 46 years. The majority of the participants had a body mass index (BMI) within the normal range (n = 555, 55.3%). The median vitamin D level among the participants was 26.00 (IQR: 19.00-34.00). The relationship between vitamin D levels and lipid profile parameters was assessed, revealing no significant correlation between vitamin D levels and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (r = 0.021, p = 0.505), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (r = 0.011, p = 0.719), or triglyceride (TG) (r = -0.026, p = 0.417) levels, both in non-adjusted and age-adjusted analyses. CONCLUSION According to the present study, there was no significant correlation between serum 25(OH)D deficiency and elevated TG or LDL levels or decreased HDL levels in PCOS patients. Nevertheless, further prospective studies are needed to determine whether there is a causal relationship between vitamin D deficiency and lipid profile alterations, specifically among PCOS patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COVID-19 is a pandemic caused by nCoV-2019, a new beta-coronavirus from Wuhan, China, that mainly affects the respiratory system and can be modulated by nutrition. METHODS This review aims to summarize the current literature on the association between dietary intake and serum levels of micronutrients, malnutrition, and dietary patterns and respiratory infections, including flu, pneumonia, and acute respiratory syndrome, with a focus on COVID-19. We searched for relevant articles in various databases and selected those that met our inclusion criteria. RESULTS Some studies suggest that dietary patterns, malnutrition, and certain nutrients such as vitamins D, E, A, iron, zinc, selenium, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber may have a significant role in preventing respiratory diseases, alleviating symptoms, and lowering mortality rates. However, the evidence is not consistent and conclusive, and more research is needed to clarify the mechanisms and the optimal doses of these dietary components. The impact of omega-3 and fiber on respiratory diseases has been mainly studied in children and adults, respectively, and few studies have examined the effect of dietary components on COVID-19 prevention, with a greater focus on vitamin D. CONCLUSION This review highlights the potential of nutrition as a modifiable factor in the prevention and management of respiratory infections and suggests some directions for future research. However, it also acknowledges the limitations of the existing literature, such as the heterogeneity of the study designs, populations, interventions, and outcomes, and the difficulty of isolating the effects of single nutrients from the complex interactions of the whole diet.

Abstract
This review offers a comprehensive evaluation of current aspects related to nutritional strategies, brain modulation, and muscle recovery, focusing on their applications and the underlying mechanisms of physiological adaptation for promoting a healthy brain, not only in athletes but also for recreationally active and inactive individuals. We propose that applying the rule, among others, of good sleep, regular exercise, and a properly balanced diet, defined as "SPARKS", will have a beneficial effect on the function and regeneration processes of the gut-brain-muscle axis. However, adopting the formula, among others, of poor sleep, stress, overtraining, and dysbiosis, defined as "SMOULDER", will have a detrimental impact on the function of this axis and consequently on human health as well as on athletes. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for optimizing brain health and cognitive function. This review highlights the significance of these factors for overall well-being, suggesting that adopting the "SPARKS" approach may benefit not only athletes but also older adults and individuals with health conditions.

Abstract
PURPOSE Poor sleep quality, mood disorders, and vitamin D deficiency are common in stroke. We investigated the association between serum vitamin D levels and pre-stroke sleep quality and the occurrence of poststroke depression (PSD) and poststroke anxiety (PSA) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). METHODS This prospective cross-sectional study included hospitalized patients with AIS and age- and sex-matched controls. Vitamin D levels were measured within 24 h of admission. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) at admission. The severity of depression and anxiety symptoms was evaluated according to Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory scores, respectively, within 72 h after admission. RESULTS Comparing 214 AIS patients with 103 controls, patients had significantly higher scores of Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and PSQI and lower vitamin D levels (p < 0.001). Among AIS patients, Beck Depression Inventory (p = 0.004) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (p = 0.018) scores were significantly higher in bad sleepers (PSQI score ≥ 6) than in good sleepers (PSQI score ≤ 5). Correlation analysis revealed negative correlations between serum vitamin D levels and Beck Depression Inventory (r = - 0.234; p < 0.001), Beck Anxiety Inventory (r = - 0.135; p = 0.016), and PSQI (r = - 0.218; p < 0.001) scores. CONCLUSION Decreased serum vitamin D levels at admission are associated with a high risk for PSD and PSA in patients with poor pre-stroke sleep quality during the early stages of AIS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Deficient concentrations of vitamin D have been linked to several cardiovascular conditions, but the causal relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and right ventricular structure and function remains unclear. Mendelian randomization (MR) was employed to inspect this association. METHODS AND RESULTS Genetic instrumental variables associated with 25(OH)D levels were acquired from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) analyses. Summary statistics for right ventricular structure and function, including right ventricular end diastolic volume, right ventricular end systolic volume, right ventricular stroke volume, and right ventricular ejection fraction, were acquired from publicly available GWAS datasets. For the primary analysis, the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was utilized in performing the MR analysis. Additionally, secondly analyses were conducted to estimate the robustness and consistency of the attained conclusions. The MR analysis did not reveal a considerable causal association between serum 25(OH)D levels and right ventricular end diastolic volume (β: 0.112, 95% confident interval [CI]: -0.006 to 0.230, p = 0.063), right ventricular end systolic volume (β: 0.102, 95% CI: -0.021 to 0.226, p = 0.105), right ventricular stroke volume (β: 0.095, 95% CI: -0.018 to 0.207, p = 0.099), or right ventricular ejection fraction (β: -0.005, 95% CI: -0.123 to 0.112, p = 0.928). CONCLUSIONS Our findings did not reveal any substantial evidence supporting a causal relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and the structure and function of the right ventricle. These findings suggest that serum 25(OH)D levels may not directly influence right ventricular parameters assessed.

Abstract
To evaluate association of vitamin D with sleep quality in adults and the influence of VDR-gene polymorphism FokI (rs2228570;A > G). Cross-sectional population-based study in adults, conducted in Brazil. The outcome was sleep-quality, evaluated by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Vitamin D was determined by indirect electrochemiluminescence and classified as deficiency (VDD), 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL in a healthy population or 25(OH)D < 30 ng/mL for groups at risk for VDD. FokI polymorphism in the VDR-gene was genotyped by qPCR and classified as homozygous wild (FF or AA), heterozygous (Ff or AG), or homozygous mutant (ff or GG). Multivariate logistic analysis was used to estimate the association between vitamin D and FokI polymorphism with sleep-quality. In a total of 1674 individuals evaluated, 53.6% had poor-sleep-quality, 31.5% had VDD, and the genotype frequency of the FokI polymorphism was 9.9% FF, 44.6% Ff, and 45.5% ff. In multivariate analysis, individuals with VDD had 1.51 times the chance of poor-sleep-quality, and individuals with the ff genotype had 1.49 times the chance of poor-sleep-quality (OR:1.49;95%CI:1.05-2.12) when compared to individuals with the FF or Ff genotype. In the combined analysis, individuals with VDD and ff genotype had more chance of poor-sleep-quality than individuals with sufficient vitamin D and genotype Ff or FF (OR:2.19;95%CI:1.27-3.76). Our data suggest that VDD and VDR FokI gene polymorphism are associated with poor-sleep-quality, and combining the two factors increases the chance of poor-sleep-quality compared to separate groups.

Abstract
Vitamin D is essential for the optimal health of the skeletal system. However, this vitamin also plays a role in other functions of the human body, such as muscle, immune, and inflammatory functions. Some studies have reported that adequate levels of vitamin D improve immune system function by reducing the levels of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines, which can protect against the risk of post-exercise illness. This systematic review aims to investigate the effects of vitamin D supplementation on pro-inflammatory cytokines in athletes. This study was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A literature search was conducted in SPORTDiscus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar up to 1 October 2023. The quality of the articles was evaluated using the Risk of Bias 2 Tool. After searching the databases, a total of 7417 studies were identified, 6 of which met the eligibility criteria, and their outcomes were presented. The six studies included 176 participants. All six studies are randomized control trials, including a total of 176 subjects, primarily men (81%). Regarding the types of athletes, most participants were endurance athletes. Our investigation in this systematic review demonstrated that out of the six studies, only two of them reported significant changes in IL-6 and TNF-α levels after taking high-dose vitamin D. Other studies did not present any significant changes after vitamin D supplementation in athletes with respect to IL-6 and TNF-α levels. Further studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation for athletes as a disease-prone community.

Abstract
A large body of research shows an association between higher body weight and low vitamin D status, as assessed using serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations. Vitamin D can be metabolised in adipose tissue and has been reported to influence gene expression and modulate inflammation and adipose tissue metabolism in vitro. However, the exact metabolism of vitamin D in adipose tissue is currently unknown. White adipose tissue expresses the vitamin D receptor and hydroxylase enzymes, substantially involved in vitamin D metabolism and efficacy. The distribution and concentrations of the generated vitamin D compounds in adipose tissue, however, are largely unknown. Closing this knowledge gap could help to understand whether the different vitamin D compounds have specific health effects in the setting of adiposity. This review summarises the current evidence for a role of vitamin D in adipose tissue and discusses options to accurately measure vitamin D compounds in adipose tissue using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The association between vitamin D deficiency and lipid profiles in adults with overweight or obesity remains unclear and inconsistent. The aim of our study was to determine the relationship between lipid profiles and vitamin D deficiency in the overweight and obese adults. METHODS Four databases, including PubMed, the Web of Science, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library, were used to identify all studies on vitamin D status and lipid levels, including the serum levels of triglycerides (TGs), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL). The Weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using random-effects models was used to assess the association between the lipid profile and vitamin D deficiency. RESULTS Twenty-one articles that included a total of 7952 adults with overweight or obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) were included. The overall results revealed that compared with the controls, individuals with vitamin D deficiency showed higher levels of TG (WMD = 15.01; 95%CI, 2.51-27.52) and TC (WMD = 8.61; 95%CI, 1.31-15.92). Moreover, vitamin D deficiency was related to an increased level of LDL (WMD = 6.12; 95%CI, 0.02-12.23). HDL level was inversely associated with the vitamin D deficiency status (WMD = -2.57; 95%CI, -4.26, -0.88). CONCLUSIONS Among the adults with overweight or obesity, the vitamin D deficient group displayed impaired lipid profiles, including increased TG, TC and LDL levels and reduced HDL level.

Abstract
PURPOSE The primary objective of this study was to explore the association of vitamin D with the monocyte to HDL-C ratio (MHR) among medical staff in Chengdu, China. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study involved 538 medical staff, including 393 females and 145 males, and included data on gender, age, body mass index, and laboratory parameters (including complete blood count, vitamin D levels, lipid, etc.). According to serum 25 (OH)D < 20 ng/ml as vitamin D deficiency, subjects were divided into two groups based on serum 25 (OH)D levels: a vitamin D deficiency group with serum 25 (OH)D < 20 ng/ml and a vitamin D sufficiency group with serum 25 (OH)D ≥ 20 ng/ml. When considering vitamin D as a categorical variable, a multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the risk factors associated with vitamin D deficiency. On the other hand, when examining the factors influencing vitamin D levels as a continuous variable, a multiple linear regression model was utilized. RESULTS The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 86.25% among all the participants. Males exhibited a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency compared to females (β=0.383, P = 0.026). Vitamin D deficiency risk decreased with age (β = 0.910, P < 0.001). Additionally, elevated values of MHR were associated with an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency (β = 1.530, P = 0.019). When treating vitamin D as a continuous variable, the results of multiple linear regression revealed that age (β = 0.342, P < 0.001), and TG (β=-1.327, P = 0.010) were independent influencing factors for vitamin D levels, indicating that vitamin D levels increase with age. A reverse association between MHR and vitamin D levels demonstrated a marginal trend toward significance (β=-0.581, P = 0.052). CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D is inversely associated with MHR among young medical staff in Chengdu, China.

Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a severe and most common supraventricular arrhythmia in humans, which, if left untreated or treated ineffectively, can lead to ischemic stroke or heart failure. It has been suggested that serum vitamin D (VitD) deficiency may be one of the critical factors influencing the onset of AF, especially in the period after cardiac surgery, such as coronary artery bypass grafting. Several papers have indicated that VitD supplementation reduces the risk of AF, significantly reducing the proportion of patients between the control and study groups in both the pre- and postoperative periods. Factors that increase the risk of AF from VitD deficiency are also further indicated, and these are age, gender, weight, season or comorbidities. In addition, the cardiodepressive mechanism of VitD is not fully understood; however, it is suggested that it acts through at least two pathways. The first indicates a direct effect of VitD on atrial muscle degradation, while the second is related to the modulation of cardiovascular depression factors. Despite many reports showing correlations between no VitD concentrations on the development of AF, this topic is still widely debated and the results from these papers are still subject to doubt. Therefore, this review aims at describing in detail the problem of correlation between VitD deficiency and the development of AF associated mainly with the postoperative period, i.e., after cardiac surgery, especially pathogenesis, and results of this correlation, taking into account recent studies, limitations and future perspectives. Due to the fact that this is still a topical problem, we believe that the collection of the latest reports and a detailed description of the problem is most appropriate in this case.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the association of vitamin D with sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic and the influence of daily sunlight on this association. METHODS This cross-sectional, population-based study among adults stratified by multistage probability cluster sampling was conducted from October to December 2020 in the Iron Quadrangle region of Brazil. The outcome was sleep quality, evaluated by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D) concentrations were determined by indirect electrochemiluminescence and a deficiency was classified as 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL. To assess sunlight, the average daily sunlight exposure was calculated and was classified as insufficient when less than 30 min/d. Multivariate logistic analysis was used to estimate the association between vitamin D and sleep quality. A directed acyclic graph was used to select minimal and sufficient sets of adjustment variables for confounding from the backdoor criterion. RESULTS In a total of 1709 individuals evaluated, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 19.8% (95% CI, 15.5-24.9%), and the prevalence of poor sleep quality was 52.5% (95% CI, 48.6-56.4%). In multivariate analysis, vitamin D was not associated with poor sleep quality in individuals with sufficient sunlight. Moreover, in individuals with insufficient sunlight, vitamin D deficiency was associated with poor sleep quality (odds ratio [OR], 2.02; 95% CI, 1.10-3.71). Furthermore, each 1-ng/mL increase in vitamin D levels reduced the chance of poor sleep quality by 4.2% (OR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.92-0.99). CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D deficiency was associated with poor sleep quality in individuals with insufficient exposure to sunlight.

Abstract
Background Considering the high prevalence of both vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and sleep impairment in children and adolescents, this study was conducted to determine the association between VDD and sleep duration in the Iranian pediatric population. Methods This multicentric national study was conducted in 2019 on 2564 frozen sera obtained from 7 to 18- year students who were studied in the fifth survey of a national school-based surveillance program conducted in 30 provinces of Iran. Sleep duration was assessed using a questionnaire based on the World Health Organization-Global School-based Student Health Survey protocol. Short sleep duration was defined as sleep duration less than 8 h/day VDD Vitamin D < 20 ng/dL, and vitamin D insufficiency as 20-30 ng/dL.An adjusted logistic regression model was applied to evaluate the associations of vitamin D status with sleep duration. Results The Mean (SD) of students' age was 12.1(3.0) years; overall 10.6%of participants had VDD and 23% of participants had short sleep duration. in the adjusted logistic model, students with a low level of vitamin D (insufficient and deficient) had a higher odds of short sleep duration in comparison to those with normal vitamin D level (OR: 1.29, 95%CI: 1.02-1.62). Conclusion The current study showed that low Vitamin D levels (insufficient and deficient)were significantly associated with short sleep duration in school-aged children. Further studies are recommended to determine the efficacy of vitamin D replacement in improving sleep duration and quality.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the association between sleep parameters and hypovitaminosis D in rotating shift drivers. Material and Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study on 82 male rotating shift workers (24-57 years old) with at least one cardiovascular risk factor (such as hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity, physical inactivity, hypertension, and smoking). Polysomnography was used to evaluate sleep parameters. Logistic regression was used to model the association between hypovitaminosis D and sleep parameters after adjustment for relevant covariates. Results Hypovitaminosis D (< 20 ng/mL) was seen in 30.5% of the workers. Shift workers with hypovitaminosis D had lower sleep efficiency (odds ratio [OR]: 3.68; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.95-5.53), lower arterial oxygen saturation (OR: 5.35; 95% CI: 3.37-6.12), and increased microarousal index (OR: 3.85; 95% CI: 1.26-5.63) after adjusting. Conclusion We suggest that hypovitaminosis D is associated with greater sleep disturbances in rotating shift workers.

Abstract
Vitamin D (vit D) is widely known for its role in calcium metabolism and its importance for the bone system. However, various studies have revealed a myriad of extra-skeletal functions, including cell differentiation and proliferation, antibacterial, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties in various cells and tissues. Vit D mediates its function via regulation of gene expression by binding to its receptor (VDR) which is expressed in almost all cells within the body. This review summarizes the pleiotropic effects of vit D, emphasizing its anti-inflammatory effect on different organ systems. It also provides a comprehensive overview of the genetic and epigenetic effects of vit D and VDR on the expression of genes pertaining to immunity and anti-inflammation. We speculate that in the context of inflammation, vit D and its receptor VDR might fulfill their roles as gene regulators through not only direct gene regulation but also through epigenetic mechanisms.

Abstract
Background Vitamin D affects adipogenesis, oxidative stress, inflammation, secretion of adipocytokines, lipid metabolism and thermogenesis. Some researchers postulate that those effects could be exerted by the influence of vitamin D on chemerin levels. Aim of the study We aimed to investigate if there is a link between serum 25-hydroksyvitamin D [25(OH)D], chemerin and metabolic profile in overweight and obese children before and after vitamin D supplementation. Material and methods The prospective study included 65 overweight and obese children aged 9.08-17.5 years and 26 peers as a control. None of the patients in the study group had received vitamin D within the last twelve months before the study. Results The study group had lower baseline 25(OH)D (p<0.001) and higher chemerin (p<0.001), triglycerides (TG, p<0.001), triglycerides/high density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C, p<0.001), C-reactive protein (CRP, p<0.05), fasting insulin (p<0.001), Homeostasis Model Assessment - Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR, p<0.001), alanine aminotransferase (ALT, p<0.001) and uric acid (p<0.001) compared to the control group. Baseline vitamin D was related to fasting insulin (R=-0.29, p=0.021), HOMA-IR (R=-0.30, p=0.016), HDL-C (R=0.29, p=0.020) and uric acid (R=-0.28, p=0.037) in the study group. Baseline chemerin was related to insulin at 30' (R=0.27, p=0.030), 60' (R=0.27, p=0.033), 90' (R=0.26, p=0.037) and 120' (R=0.26, p=0.040) during the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and ALT (R=0.25, p=0.041) in the study group. Correlation between vitamin D and chemerin (R=-0.39, p=0.046) was found only in the control group. After six months of vitamin D supplementation a decrease in CRP (p<0.01), total cholesterol (p<0.05), ALT (p<0.01), glucose at 150' OGTT (p<0.05) was observed. Moreover, we noticed a tendency for negative association between 25(OH)D and chemerin levels (p=0.085). Multivariable backward linear regression models were build using baseline vitamin D, baseline chemerin and six months chemerin as the dependent variables. Conclusions Our study confirmed that vitamin D has positive effect on metabolic profile in overweight and obese children. The relationship between vitamin D and chemerin is not clear, nevertheless we have observed a tendency to decrease chemerin concentrations after improving vitamin D status, even without a significant reduction in body fat mass.

Effects of Vitamin D Supplementation on Adipose Tissue Inflammation and NF-κB/AMPK Activation in Obese Mice Fed a High-Fat Diet. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 23:ijms231810915. Abstract
Adipose tissue expansion is strongly associated with increased adipose macrophage infiltration and adipocyte-derived pro-inflammatory cytokines, contributing to obesity-associated low-grade inflammation. Individuals with vitamin D deficiency have an increased prevalence of obesity and increased circulating inflammatory cytokines. However, the effect of vitamin D supplementation on obesity-induced inflammation remains controversial. Male C57BL/6J mice received a low-fat (10% fat) or high-fat (HF, 60% fat diet) containing 1000 IU vitamin D/kg diet, or HF supplemented with 10,000 IU vitamin D/kg diet for 16 weeks (n = 9/group). Vitamin D supplementation did not decrease HF-increased body weight but attenuated obesity-induced adipose hypertrophy and macrophage recruitment as demonstrated by the number of crown-like structures. Vitamin D supplementation significantly reduced the mRNA expression of CD11c, CD68, and iNOS, specific for inflammatory M1-like macrophages, and decreased serum levels of NO. In addition, significant reductions in pro-inflammatory gene expression of IL-6, MCP-1, and TNFα and mRNA levels of ASC-1, CASP1, and IL-1β involved in NLRP3 inflammasome were found in obese mice supplemented with vitamin D. Vitamin D supplementation significantly increased obesity-decreased AMPK activity and suppressed HF-increased NF-κB phosphorylation in adipose tissue from obese mice. These observed beneficial effects of vitamin D supplementation on adipose tissue expansion, macrophage recruitment, and inflammation might be related to AMPK/NF-κB signaling.

Abstract
Several studies have found an association of COVID-19 disease severity with Vitamin D deficiency and higher levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgGs. The aim of this study was to determine whether levels of Vitamin D and "inflammatory state" influence the magnitude of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgGs levels in COVID-19 patients. For this purpose, in 67 patients levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG were measured in week 4 whereas in 52 patients levels of Vitamin D were measured in week 1 after symptom onset. We found that low Vitamin D levels were significantly associated with age and disease severity whereas there was a trend without significance, towards negative correlation of Vitamin D with anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG were significantly higher in older ages, patients with severe disease, diabetes and those who received corticosteroid and antibiotic therapy. There was a positive correlation of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG with IL-6, CRP, LDH, ESR and with percentages of granulocytes. In conclusion, Vitamin D and anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG share common parameters associated with inflammatory state. However, even though Vitamin D protects against severe forms of COVID-19 it could not directly affect anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG production.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is often linked with Metabolic Syndrome, both being more frequent with ageing and associated with an increase inflammatory state. Recently, monocytes-to-high density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio (MHR) has emerged as a powerful index to predict systemic inflammation. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the association between circulating vitamin D level (25-OH vitamin D) and inflammatory status in a population of 1048 adult individuals. Our study reveals an inverse association between 25-OH vitamin D levels and MHR in the overall population. When the population is stratified by gender, waist circumference, and body mass index (BMI), we observed that while in men this relation is strongly significative only in condition of central obesity, in women a lifelong negative correlation exists between circulating 25-OH vitamin D and MHR and it is independent of the metabolic status. These observations underscore the relevance of circulating biomarkers such as MHR in the prediction of systemic inflammatory conditions sustained by vitamin D deficiency also in healthy and young women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is related to changes in adipokine secretion, activity of adipose tissue macrophages, helper T cells, and regulatory T cells. It has been confirmed that vitamin D has potent anti-inflammatory properties. It contributes to reduction in pro-inflammatory mediators and an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines. There is also evidence that vitamin D could decrease C-reactive protein (CRP) and affect selected haematological indices. AIM OF THE STUDY We aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin D on interleukin (IL)-10, IL-17, CRP, blood leukocyte profile, and platelet (PLT) count in overweight and obese children before and after six months of vitamin D supplementation. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study group consisted of 67 overweight and obese children aged 9.08-17.5 years. The control group included 31 normal weight peers age- and sex-matched. None of the studied children had received vitamin D supplementation before the study. Data were analyzed at baseline and after vitamin D supplementation. RESULTS The study group had lower baseline 25(OH)D (p<0.001) and higher white blood cell (WBC) (p=0.014), granulocyte (p=0.015), monocyte (p=0.009) and CRP (p=0.002) compared to the control group. In the study group, vitamin D levels were related negatively to nutritional status. Leukocyte profile parameters, PLT, CRP, IL-10 or IL-17 were not related to baseline 25(OH)D. Baseline IL-17 levels correlated with monocytes (R= 0.36, p=0.003) independently on 25(OH)D deficit. In children with vitamin D <15ng/ml, the baseline 25(OH)D was related to CRP (R=-0.42, p=0.017). After six months of vitamin D supplementation, we noticed a decrease in CRP levels (p=0.0003). Serum 25(OH)D correlated with IL-10 in that period (R=0.27, p=0.028). Moreover, we noticed that IL-10 correlated with monocyte (R=-0.28, p=0.023). We did not find any significant associations between 25(OH)D and leukocyte profile parameters, PLT, or IL-17. The multivariable stepwise regression analysis identified IL-10 as the parameter positively associated with 25(OH)D. CONCLUSIONS Our study confirmed beneficial effects of vitamin D supplementation in overweight and obese paediatric populations. Vitamin D intake seems to exert its anti-inflammatory effect mainly via decreasing the CRP level and protecting stabile values of IL-10, rather than its impact on pro-inflammatory factors such as lL-17 and leukocyte profile parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has adversely affected the health of the global population, with sleep quality being one of the affected parameters. OBJECTIVES To evaluate sleep quality and its associated factors in adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. DESIGN AND SETTING A population-based cross-sectional serological survey of 1,762 adults in the Iron Quadrangle region of Brazil. METHODS The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess sleep quality. Sociodemographic variables, health conditions, health-related behaviors, anxiety, vitamin D levels, weight gain/loss, and pandemic characteristics were assessed using a structured questionnaire. Univariate and multivariate analyses using Poisson regression with robust variance were performed to identify factors associated with sleep quality. RESULTS More than half of the participants reported poor sleep quality (52.5%). Multivariate analysis revealed that the factors associated with poor sleep quality included living alone (prevalence ratio [PR] = 1.34; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04-1.73), anxiety disorder (PR = 1.32; 95% CI: 1.08-1.62), 5.0% weight loss (PR = 1.21; 95% CI: 1.02-1.44), 5.0% weight gain (PR = 1.27; 95% CI: 1.03-1.55), vitamin D deficiency (PR = 1.16; 95% CI: 1.01-1.35), and COVID-19 symptoms (PR = 1.29; 95% CI: 1.10-1.52). CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed that more than half of the participants experienced poor sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Factors associated with poor sleep quality included vitamin D deficiency and weight changes related to the pandemic.

Abstract
Introduction: Vitamin D may affect the modulation of signaling pathways in the central nervous system. We aimed to evaluate the effect of high-dose vitamin D supplementation on neuropsychological functions in female adolescents. Methods: We studied the effects of 9 weeks of vitamin D supplementation (50000 IU vitamin D3 [cholecalciferol]/week) on cognitive abilities and sleep disorders in 940 adolescent girls. Results: Oral vitamin D supplementation improved cognitive abilities, including memory, inhibitory control, selective attention, decision making, planning, sustained attention, and cognitive flexibility in healthy adolescent girls (P<0.001). The prevalence of subjects with insomnia after intervention fell from 15.0% to 11.3%. Similar results were also found for the prevalence of sleepiness (15.6% reduced to 14.7%), or cases with both insomnia and sleepiness (8.0% reduced to 6.1%; P<0.05). Conclusion: High dose of vitamin D can improve cognitive abilities and alleviate insomnia and daytime sleepiness in adolescent girls. Further investigations are required on different population groups (age and gender) to determine the sustainability of these effects. The value of vitamin D therapy in other neurological disorders would also be of research interest.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to compare the haematological parameters of patients with very high and normal 25-hydroxyvitamin-D3 (25(OH)D3) levels. METHODS This study was designed as a retrospective cross-sectional study. The patients were divided into three groups according to their 25(OH)D3 levels: groups 1, 2 and 3 are patients with normal 25(OH)D3 levels (30-88 ng/mL), hypervitaminosis D (89-149 ng/mL) and vitamin D intoxication (>150 ng/mL), respectively. According to vitamin D levels, statistical analysis was performed by comparing the biochemical and haematological data between the groups. RESULTS This study evaluated 120 patients (40 patients) in three equal groups. A statistically significant difference was found between the three groups in haemoglobin (p = 0.03), haematocrit (p = 0.01), red blood cell levels (p = 0.03), leukocyte count (p < 0.001), neutrophil count (p < 0.001), lymphocyte count (p = 0.006), mean platelet volume (p = 0.04), and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (p = 0.03). In post hoc analysis, haemoglobin, haematocrit and RBC were significantly higher in group 1 than in group 3 (post hoc Tukey, p < 0.05). A statistically significant negative correlation was noted between 25(OH)D3 level and haemoglobin (r = -0.236), haemotocrit (r = -0.230), and red blood cell (r = -0.265) levels. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D intoxication has been observed to affect haemoglobin, haematocrit, and RBC levels negatively. However, more studies are needed to clarify the effects and mechanisms of high vitamin D levels on the haematopoietic system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was performed to assess the effects of vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency combined with a high body mass index (BMI) on paraspinal muscle (PSM) atrophy and pain intensity in postmenopausal women with lower back pain (LBP). METHODS In total, 365 postmenopausal women were analyzed in the study. We divided the women into four groups according to BMI and vitamin D status. Outcome measurements included PSM atrophy, fatty infiltration (FI) and severity of LBP. Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the odds ratio (OR), and the interaction between the BMI and vitamin D status was tested. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the high BMI with vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency group had a significantly increased risk of FI > grade 2 (OR = 10.69, p < 0.001), hand grip strength of <16 kg (OR = 8.96, p < 0.001), Short Physical Performance Battery score of ≤8 (OR = 3.69, p < 0.001) and visual analog scale (VAS) score of >3 (OR = 4.76, p < 0.001). A significant positive additive interaction was found between the BMI and vitamin D status on PSM atrophy. CONCLUSION Vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency combined with a high BMI was associated with PSM atrophy and LBP intensity in postmenopausal women. The interaction analysis showed a positive additive interaction between BMI and vitamin D status.

Abstract
Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have a higher risk to develop cognitive impairment. Several studies reported the potential roles of vitamin D in prevention of cognitive impairment, but the mechanism remains unclear. The present study aims to investigate the protective effects of vitamin D3 on cognitive impairment in db/db mice and to explore the possible mechanism. Twelve-week-old male db/db mice were randomly administrated with low, medium, and high dose of vitamin D3 (LVD, MVD, and HVD groups, respectively) and equivalent volume vitamin D3 solvent (corn oil, DM group) intragastrically. Eight age-matched db/m mice were given equivalent volume corn oil as normal group. After 16 weeks of vitamin D3 treatment, the concentrations of fasting serum glucose in three vitamin D3 groups (especially the 1,000 IU/kg·bw dose) were significantly decreased compared with DM group. Pathology revealed that the neuron damage was reduced in vitamin D3 groups. MVD intervention significantly shortened the escape latency on day 5 and extended time in the target quadrant. Mice in HVD group had significantly higher exploration time and discrimination index compared with the DM group mice. Moreover, vitamin D3 treatment has increased the phosphorylation of cAMP-response element-binding protein and the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and vitamin D receptor. This treatment, meanwhile, has decreased the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α, the phosphorylation of inhibitor kappa Bα (IκBα), and nuclear factor-κB p65 (NF-κB p65) in the hippocampus of db/db mice. These results suggest that vitamin D3 alleviated cognitive impairment in the hippocampus of db/db mice. Down-regulation of the NF-κB signaling pathway-related proteins IκBα and p65 might be one of the possible mechanisms.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in patients with overweight/obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Herein, we investigated the relationship between vitamin D status and overweight/obesity status, insulin resistance (IR), systemic inflammation as well as oxidative stress (OS). Anthropometric and laboratory assessments of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and glycemic, pro-inflammatory and OS biomarkers were performed in a sample of 47 patients with T2DM who were divided into categories based on overweight and degree of obesity. The main findings were: the overweight/obesity status correlated negatively with the degree of serum 25(OH)D deficiency (ρ = −0.27) with a trend towards statistical significance (p = 0.069); the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was significantly different (p = 0.024) in patients with 25(OH)D deficiency, as was total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) in patients with severe serum 25(OH)D deficiency as compared to those with 25(OH)D over 20 ng/mL (TOS: p = 0.007, OSI: p = 0.008); and 25(OH)D had a negative indirect effect on TOS by body mass index (BMI), but BMI was not a significant mediator of the studied relationship. In a setting of overweight and increasing degree of obesity, patients with T2DM did not display decreasing values of 25(OH)D. Subjects with the lowest values of 25(OH)D presented the highest values of BMI. Patients with 25(OH)D deficiency were more insulin resistant and showed increased OS but no elevated systemic inflammation. The negative effect of 25(OH)D on TOS did not seem to involve BMI as a mediator.

Abstract
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to critically summarize the current data concerning the impact of obesity and micronutrient adequacy and supplementation on the risk and severity of COVID-19 disease, and their potential impact on treatment and rehabilitation.Design/methodology/approachPubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases were thoroughly searched to identify studies concerning obesity and nutritional status, vitamin and other micronutrients adequacy with COVID-19 severity.FindingsIndividuals with higher body mass index are in greater risk of severe disease and need for mechanical ventilation. Concerning micronutrient adequacy, no published studies at the present time have evaluated the effect of supplementation on the risk and the treatment of the novel disease.Originality/valueRecently, COVID-19 has monopolized the interest of the medical community regarding diet and nutritional status and it possibly plays an important role in disease severity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the effects of vitamin D and/or magnesium supplementation on mood, serum levels of BDNF, inflammation, and SIRT1 in obese women with mild to moderate depressive symptoms. METHODS In this trial, the 108 obese women with mild to moderate depressive symptoms were randomly allocated into 4 groups: (1) co- supplementation group (n = 27): receiving a 50000 IU vitamin D soft gel weekly + a 250- mg magnesium tablet daily; (2) vitamin D group (n = 27): receiving a 50000 IU vitamin D soft gel weekly + a magnesium placebo daily; (3) magnesium group (n = 27): receiving a vitamin D placebo weekly + a 250- mg magnesium tablet daily; (4) control group (n = 27): receiving a vitamin D placebo weekly + a magnesium placebo daily, for 8 weeks. Before and after the intervention, anthropometric indices, depressive symptoms, serum levels of BDNF, 25(OH)-D, inflammation, and SIRT1, were measured. RESULTS At the end of the study, ANCOVA demonstrated significant differences between the 4 groups in 25(OH)-D, magnesium, TNF-α, IL-6, and BDNF levels. But, we found no significant differences in terms of hs-CRP and SIRT1 levels. A significant reduction in depression score was observed in 3 intervention groups and also in control group. No significant differences in BDI-II score were shown among the 4 groups at the end of the intervention. CONCLUSION Vitamin D plus magnesium supplementation in obese women with mild to moderate depressive symptoms has beneficial influences on mood, serum levels of BDNF, inflammation, and SIRT1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Taking advantage of isomeric form of vitamin E in the supplement, adherence to supplement could be evaluated by changes in circulating α- and γ-tocopherol concentrations. Accordingly, effects of supplementation on postoperative nutrition and bone metabolism were studied in terms of adherence. METHODS Thirty-eight SG patients were all prescribed a postoperative nutritional supplement containing a low dose of vitamin D (600 IU) and calcium (200 mg). Blood samples were collected prior to (M0) and 6 months after (M6) surgery and concentrations of nutrients and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collage (CTX), a marker of bone resorption, were measured. Adherence and non-adherence were stratified according to change (△, M6-M0) in serum α-tocopherol concentrations (> 0 vs. ≤ 0, respectively). RESULTS When M0 and M6 were compared, there were significant increases in serum concentrations of 25(OH)D, α-tocopherol and selenium, whereas there were reductions in parathyroid hormone, ferritin, and γ-tocopherol. At M6, the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency (25(OH)D < 30 ng/mL) and high CTX were 72 and 26%, respectively. When comparison was made between adherence and non-adherence, only △25(OH)D concentrations, but no other nutrients nor postoperative CTX differed. Multiple linear regression demonstrated that postoperative vitamin D status was independently associated with its preoperative concentrations (β = 0.85, p < 0.001) and adherence (β = 0.52, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION SG patients' adherence to supplementation, even with a low dose of vitamin D and calcium, determined vitamin D status but not bone resorption marker concentrations, at least within 6 months after surgery.

Abstract
Purpose: A growing number of studies indicate the importance of vitamin D supplementation for sports performance. However, the effects of a single high-dose vitamin D supplementation on ultramarathon-induced inflammation have not been investigated. We here analyzed the effect of a single high-dose vitamin D supplementation on the inflammatory marker levels in ultramarathon runners after an ultramarathon run (maximal run 240 km). Methods: In the study, 35 runners (amateurs) were assigned into two groups: single high-dose vitamin D supplementation group, administered vitamin D (150,000 IU) in vegetable oil 24 h before the start of the run (n = 16); and placebo group (n = 19). Blood was collected for analysis 24 h before, immediately after, and 24 h after the run. Results: Serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly increased after the ultramarathon in both groups. The increase was greater in the vitamin D group than in the control group. Based on post-hoc and other analyses, the increase in interleukin 6 and 10, and resistin levels immediately after the run was significantly higher in runners in the control group than that in those in the supplementation group. Leptin, oncostatin M, and metalloproteinase tissue inhibitor levels were significantly decreased in both groups after the run, regardless of the supplementation. Conclusions: Ultramarathon significantly increases the serum 25(OH)D levels. Attenuation of changes in interleukin levels upon vitamin D supplementation confirmed that vitamin D has anti-inflammatory effect on exercise-induced inflammation.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. In this study, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were compared between women with and without PCOS and with regard to anthropometric indices and lipid and glucose biomarkers. Thirty-one women with PCOS and 75 controls answered a questionnaire on vitamin D, in addition to general health and lifestyle. The patients with PCOS had lower vitamin D levels (p < 0.05), a significantly higher rate of obesity (p < 0.05), and significantly higher serum triglyceride levels than did controls. The number of patients with PCOS consumed milk and dairy products (p < 0.05) and exposed to sun (p < 0.006) were lower compared to controls. Triglyceride levels were significantly correlated with body mass index (BMI); vitamin D level was not significantly correlated with anthropometrical or biochemical variables. These results affirm that vitamin D levels are lower in women with PCOS; however, despite the significantly higher proportion of obesity among patients with PCOS, hypovitaminosis was not associated with BMI. The relationship between body composition and vitamin D in PCOS and the effect of vitamin D correction on metabolic and hormonal parameters associated with PCOS must be assessed in future trials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Arterial stiffness (AS), one of the complications of diabetes, associated with many metabolic factors. This study aimed to investigate the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D(25(OH)D) and AS in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS We identified 1335 diabetic patients from the Department of Endocrinology, Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital. Finally, 603 T2DM patients were included in the study. They were divided into two groups: AS group (baPWV ≥ 15,500 cm/s) and the control group (baPWV < 1550 cm/s). RESULTS (1) Heart rate (HR) and systolic pressure (SBP) were higher while body weight and body mass index (BMI) were smaller in AS group than the control group (all P < 0.05). (2) Compared to patients without AS, patients with AS showed lower 25(OH)D and higher rate of 25(OH)D deficiency (42 ± 16 vs. 45 ± 17 mol/l, 68% vs. 64%, all P < 0.05). (3) BaPWV was negatively associated with 25(OH)D (r = -0.12, P = 0.004), while positively associated with age, duration of diabetes, HR, SBP, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and negatively associated with body weight and BMI (all P < 0.05). (4) Multiple linear regression showed that 25(OH)D was the negatively influencing factor of baPWV (β = -2.2, P = 0.01). Logistic regression showed that age and SBP were risk factor of AS (OR:1.07, 95% CI: 1.05-1.10, P < 0.001; OR:1.03, 95% CI: 1.02-1.04, P < 0.001) while 25(OH)D was protective factor of AS (OR:0.987, 95% CI: 0.976-0.998, P = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS T2DM patients with AS had lower 25(OH)D and higher rate of 25(OH)D deficiency. There was a negative relationship between 25(OH)D and AS assessed by baPWV.

Abstract
SCOPE Persons with metabolic syndrome (MetS) absorb less vitamin E than healthy controls. It is hypothesized that absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (FSV) A and D2 would also decrease with MetS status and that trends would be reflected in lipidomic responses between groups. METHODS AND RESULTS Following soymilk consumption (501 IU vitamin A, 119 IU vitamin D2 ), the triglyceride-rich lipoprotein fractions (TRL) from MetS and healthy subjects (n = 10 age- and gender-matched subjects/group) are assessed using LC-MS/MS. Absorption is calculated using area under the time-concentration curves (AUC) from samples collected at 0, 3, and 6 h post-ingestion. MetS subjects have ≈6.4-fold higher median vitamin A AUC (retinyl palmitate) versus healthy controls (P = 0.07). Vitamin D2 AUC is unaffected by MetS status (P = 0.48). Untargeted LC-MS lipidomics reveals six phospholipids and one cholesterol ester with concentrations correlating (r = 0.53-0.68; P < 0.001) with vitamin A concentration. CONCLUSIONS The vitamin A-phospholipid association suggests increased hydrolysis by PLB, PLRP2, and/or PLA2 IB may be involved in the trend in higher vitamin A bioavailability in MetS subjects. Previously observed differences in circulating levels of these vitamins are likely not due to absorption. Alternate strategies should be investigated to improve FSV status in MetS.

Abstract
AIMS Previous studies have suggested that type 2 diabetes mellitus with lower extremity arterial disease is related to 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency. The purpose of this study is to explore the relation between vitamin D supplementation and the characteristics of type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with lower extremity arterial disease. METHODS The clinical data of 514 patients and 148 healthy subjects treated in the First Hospital of Lanzhou University from January 2012 to June 2019 were collected, including the clinical data, ankle-brachial index, and medical records of lower limb artery angiography. We divided the patients into control group (NC group), type 2 diabetes mellitus group (DM group), lower extremity artery disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus without vitamin D supplement group (DM1 group) and lower extremity artery disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus with vitamin D supplement group (DM2 group). The level of serum 25(OH)D was analyzed and the characteristics of arterial lesions of lower extremities were compared by DSA arteriography in DM1 and DM2 group, respectively. RESULTS Compared with the NC group, serum 25(OH)D level decreased in DM group (25.39 ± 4.94 ng/mL vs 19.43 ± 5.98 ng/mL) and significantly decreased in DM1 and DM2 group (14.22 ± 5.64 ng/mL vs 17.36 ± 6.25 ng/mL). However, the level of serum 25(OH)D in the DM2 group was higher than that in the DM1 group. Compared with the DM1 group, the disease rate of the inferior knee artery (65% vs 39.3%) and occlusion rate (11.5% vs 3.7%)were decreased in the DM2 group (P < 0.05). Logistic stepwise regression analysis showed that serum 25(OH)D level was a risk factor for lower extremity arterial disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (OR = 0.898,95%CI = 0.856-0.942). CONCLUSIONS The serum level of 25(OH)D in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with lower extremity arterial disease is decreased, and level of 25 (OH) D is related to stenosis and occlusion rate, especially in inferior genicular artery in T2DM complicated with LEAD. A high level of 25(OH)D may be a protective factor in type 2 diabetes with lower extremity arterial disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disorders, one of the most common problems in the general population, have been related to a series of harmful health consequences. Vitamin D appears to be associated with sleep disorders. However, the difference in vitamin D levels between sleep disorder subjects and people without a sleep disorder is unclear. Simultaneously, the influence of vitamin D replenishment on sleep disorders remains controversial. METHODS PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched for literatures published until October 2019. Using a random effects model, a meta-analysis was conducted to calculate the standard mean difference to evaluate the difference in vitamin D concentrations between sleep disorder subjects and normal people and the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation on sleep disorders. RESULTS Our study found that the serum vitamin D levels in the sleep disorder subjects were lower than that in the normal people (SMD = -0.75 ng/ml, 95% CI = -0.93, -0.57 ng/ml). Moreover, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)in the subjects with vitamin D supplementation was lower than that in the controls (SMD = -0.45, 95% CI = -0.76, -0.13). CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D could play a promising role in sleep disorders. More data are required to confirm the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation for improving sleep disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We present evidence for a possible role of Vitamin D (VitD) deficiency in unregulated cytokine production and inflammation leading to complications in COVID-19 patients. DESIGN The time-adjusted case mortality ratio (T-CMR) was estimated as the ratio of deceased patients on day N to the confirmed cases on day N-8. The adaptive average of T-CMR (A-CMR) was calculated as a metric of COVID-19 associated mortality. A model based on positivity change (PC) and an estimated prevalence of COVID-19 was used to determine countries with similar screening strategies. A possible association of A-CMR with the mean concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in elderly individuals in countries with similar screening strategy was investigated. We considered high C-reactive protein (CRP) in severe COVID-19 patients (CRP ≥ 1 mg/dL) as a surrogate of a cytokine storm. We considered high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) in healthy subjects as hs-CRP ≥ 0.2 mg/dL. RESULTS A link between 25(OH)D and A-CMR in countries with similar screening strategy is evidence for VitD's possible role in reducing unregulated cytokine production and inflammation among patients with severe COVID-19. We observed an odds ratio (OR) of 1.8 with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) (1.2 to 2.6) and an OR of 1.9 with 95% CI (1.4 to 2.7) for hs-CRP in VitD deficient elderly from low-income families and high-income families, respectively. COVID-19 patient-level data show an OR of 3.4 with 95% CI (2.15 to 5.4) for high CRP in severe COVID-19 patients. CONCLUSION We conclude that future studies on VitD's role in reducing cytokine storm and COVID-19 mortality are warranted.

Abstract
Vitamin D is a steroid hormone classically involved in the calcium metabolism and bone homeostasis. Recently, new and interesting aspects of vitamin D metabolism has been elucidated, namely the special role of the skin, the metabolic control of liver hydroxylase CYP2R1, the specificity of 1α-hydroxylase in different tissues and cell types and the genomic, non-genomic and epigenomic effects of vitamin D receptor, which will be addressed in the present review. Moreover, in the last decades, several extraskeletal effects which can be attributed to vitamin D have been shown. These beneficial effects will be here summarized, focusing on the immune system and cardiovascular system.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the levels of 25(OH)D, inflammation markers and glucose and fat metabolism indexes in pregnant women with Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).One hundred and ten cases GDM and 100 cases healthy pregnant women in the First People's Hospital of Lianyungang City from October 2016 to December 2018 were recruited for this observational cross-sectional study. Each participant's anthropometric and demographic data was recorded. Blood samples were collected and analyzed to determine the levels of 25(OH)D, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), fasting blood glucose, fasting blood insulin, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), cholesterol and triglycerides.Inflammatory markers and glucose and fat metabolism indexes were all significantly higher in the GDM group than that in the control group, while Serum 25(OH)D level in the GDM group was significantly lower. Serum 25(OH)D levels were negatively correlated with hs-CRP, while not with TNF-α. Furthermore, Serum 25(OH)D, hs-CRP and TNF-α levels were all associated with increased risk of developing GDM.Nowadays, the reports on the association between 25(OH)D level and GDM were controversial. Our results are consistent with the view that there was association between 25(OH)D level and GDM, and expand the literature by showing the roles of 25(OH)D, inflammation markers as well as glucose and fat metabolism indexes in the risk of developing GDM in the pregnant women with the low overall levels of 25(OH)D before delivery. This broadens our knowledge on the pathophysiology of GDM, which may be helpful in prevention and treatment of GDM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The number of children with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is proliferating. However, currently, there are no drugs approved for the management of NAFLD. There have been some studies on vitamin D and NAFLD in children. However, the effectiveness of vitamin D in children with NAFLD has not been systematically evaluated. The objective of this systematic review will be to evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin D in children with NAFLD. METHODS We will search through PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and the ClinicalTrials.gov website without restriction on publishing status. To supplement our search strategy, we will scan the reference lists of the identified studies for detailed evaluation for additional possible eligible studies, and we will also search conference proceedings related to this topic. All databases were searched from inception to present. Any clinical randomized controlled trials related to vitamin D supplement for treating NAFLD (simple steatosis/NAFL and NASH) in children will be included. NAFLD had to be diagnosed by liver histology, imaging (ultrasound, computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging). The primary outcomes will be changes in liver fibrosis and liver enzymes. The variations in serum vitamin D level, BMI, insulin levels, lipid profiles, liver fat content will also be assessed. All statistical analyses will be carried out using RevMan, version 5.3, Copenhagen: The Nordic Cochrane Centre, The Cochrane Collaboration, 2014. RESULTS This study will provide a comprehensive high-quality synthesis to evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in children with NAFLD. CONCLUSION This systematic review and meta-analysis will provide evidence to judge whether vitamin D supplementation is an effective intervention for children with NAFLD. Abstract
Background: Obesity is associated with lower levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and higher cardiovascular risk related to metabolic syndrome (MetS). Our purpose was to investigate if there is an association between levels of 25(OH)D and the components of MetS in an obese sample. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled obese patients referred for bariatric surgery in a specialized clinic. Secondary data were gathered as follows: glycemic and lipid profiles, 25(OH)D, anthropometric parameters, and clinical and sociodemographic information. The results were presented as means (standard deviations) or medians and interquartile intervals or absolute and relative frequencies. The patients were divided into three groups based on 25(OH)D terciles for analysis and were compared using ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis or chi-squared tests. The correlations were calculated by Spearman's or Pearson's correlation tests. Results: We studied 299 patients, with the majority being women (74.9%). The patients' average (SD) age and 25(OH)D level were 36 (9) years and 25.8 (7.5) ng/mL, respectively. There was no association between vitamin D and MetS or its components. A progressive decrease in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), and nonhigh-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) was observed as the serum vitamin D level increased, although only the latter reached statistical significance (P = 0.033). The correlation analysis showed a negative linear association between 25(OH)D and total cholesterol (r = -0.157; P = 0.047), 25(OH)D and LDL-c (r = -0.164; P = 0.038), and 25(OH)D and non-HDL-c (r = -0.176; P = 0.026). Conclusions: There was a negative correlation between 25(OH)D levels and the atherogenic profile but none with the MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, may inhibit colorectal cancer (CRC) progression, which has been mechanistically linked to an attenuation of a pro-inflammatory state. The present study investigated the associations between circulating 25 hydroxy vitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) levels and inflammatory markers (IL10, IL8, IL6, TNFα and hsCRP) in the 2 years following CRC diagnosis. METHODS Circulating 25(OH)D3 levels and inflammatory markers were assessed at diagnosis, after 6, 12 and 24 months from 798 patients with sporadic CRC participating in two prospective cohort studies. Associations between 25(OH)D3 levels and individual inflammatory markers as well as a summary inflammatory z-score were assessed at each time point by multiple linear regression analyses. To assess the association between 25(OH)D3 and inflammatory markers over the course of 2 years, linear mixed model regression analyses were conducted. RESULTS Higher 25(OH)D3 levels were associated with lower IL6 levels at diagnosis, at 6 months after diagnosis and over the course of 2 years (β -0.06, 95% CI -0.08 to -0.04). In addition, 25(OH)D3 levels were inversely associated with the summary inflammatory z-score at diagnosis and over the course of 2 years (β -0.17, 95% CI -0.25 to -0.08). In addition, a significant inverse association between 25(OH)D3 levels and IL10 was found over the course of 2 years. Intra-individual analyses showed an inverse association between 25(OH)D3 and IL10, IL6 and TNFα. No statistically significant associations between 25(OH)D3 and IL8 and hsCRP levels were observed. CONCLUSIONS Serum 25(OH)D3 levels were inversely associated with the summary inflammatory z-score and in particular with IL6 in the years following CRC diagnosis. This is of potential clinical relevance as IL6 has an important role in chronic inflammation and is also suggested to stimulate cancer progression. Further observational studies should investigate whether a possible 25(OH)D3-associated reduction of inflammatory mediators influences treatment efficacy and CRC recurrence.

Abstract
Vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP), the main carrier of vitamin D, has recently been implicated in reproductive health and pregnancy outcomes including endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), pre-eclampsia, and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Improved methods for measuring VDBP and an increased understanding of its role in biological processes have led to a number of newly published studies exploring VDBP in the context of pregnancy. Here, we synthesize the available evidence regarding the role of VDBP in reproductive health and pregnancy, and we highlight areas requiring further study. Overall, low levels of maternal serum VDBP concentrations have been associated with infertility, endometriosis, PCOS and spontaneous miscarriage, as well as adverse pregnancy outcomes including GDM, pre-eclampsia, preterm birth and fetal growth restriction. However, increased VDBP concentration in cervicovaginal fluid has been linked to unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss and premature rupture of membranes. Some genetic variants of VDBP have also been associated with these adverse outcomes. Further studies using more accurate VDBP assays and accounting for ethnic variation and potential confounders are needed to clarify whether VDBP is associated with reproductive health and pregnancy outcomes, and the mechanisms underlying these relationships.

Abstract
Background:
Recent studies have demonstrated the role of micronutrients in the manifestation
of comorbidities associated with obesity. Vitamin D deficiency, in particular, appears to be associated
with increased levels of inflammatory markers, which may lead to chronic low-grade inflammation,
elevating the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular
disease. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review of observational
studies conducted to investigate the effect of vitamin D deficiency on inflammatory markers in obese
subjects.
Methodology:
This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the “STROBE” and PRISMA
recommendations. Observational studies that evaluated the effect of vitamin D status on inflammatory
markers in obese subjects were selected and reviewed. Searches were conducted in the
PubMed, SciVerse Scopus, and Web of Science databases from February 21 to 22, 2018.
Results:
After the selection and removal of duplicate articles, 10 eligible articles were identified. Results
from eight observational studies showed an association between vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency
in the body and increased concentrations of inflammatory markers in obese individuals. On
the other hand, two of the studies did not demonstrate any correlation. With regard to the inflammatory
markers evaluated, eight studies showed high concentrations of ultra-sensitive C-reactive protein,
five studies found an increase in interleukin-6 concentrations, and two studies noted increased
levels of tumor necrosis factor.
Conclusion:
The data presented in this systematic review provide evidence of the association between
vitamin D deficiency and increased inflammation in obesity.

Abstract
AIMS Vitamin D is a well-known endocrine regulator of calcium/phosphate homeostasis and has been reported as having a wide range of activities that are potentially beneficial for human health. This study aimed to investigate the effects of pretreatment of vitamin D3 (100, 1000, and 10,000 IU/kg) against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cognitive impairment in rats. MAIN METHODS Male Wistar rats were divided into five groups. The passive avoidance test and Morris water maze (MWM) test were conducted to evaluate the learning and memory function. Oxidative stress markers including malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total thiol content as well as interleukin (IL)-6 were evaluated in the hippocampus tissue. KEY FINDINGS The intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of LPS (1 mg/kg) correlates with deficits in passive avoidance and spatial learning in the systemic inflammation model. However, pretreatment with vitamin D3 improved LPS-induced cognitive impairment. In addition, vitamin D3 decreased IL-6 and MDA levels, whereas the activities of CAT, SOD, and total thiol content in the hippocampus tissue were significantly increased. SIGNIFICANCE In conclusion, our results suggest that vitamin D3 plays a protective role against memory dysfunction caused by LPS-induced inflammation through inhibition of oxidative stress and inflammation in the hippocampus. Vitamin D may be a promising potential therapeutic supplement for the treatment or prevention of learning and memory disorders.

Abstract
Lifestyle interventions may reduce inflammation and lower breast cancer (BrCa) risk. This randomized trial assessed the impact of the Sistas Inspiring Sistas Through Activity and Support (SISTAS) study on plasma C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII). This unblinded, dietary and physical activity trial was implemented in 337 obese (body mass index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m2) African American (AA) women recruited between 2011 and 2015 in South Carolina through a community-based participatory approach with measurements at baseline, 3 months, and 12 months. Participants were randomized into either intervention (n = 176) or wait-list control group (n = 161). Linear mixed-effect models were used for analyses of CRP and IL-6. Baseline CRP was significantly higher in those with greater obesity, body fat percentage, and waist circumference (all p <.01). No difference was observed between groups for CRP or IL-6 at 3 or 12 months; however, improvements in diet were observed in the intervention group compared to the control group (p = .02) at 3 months but were not sustained at 12 months. Although the intervention was not successful at reducing levels of CRP or IL-6, a significant decrease was observed in DII score for the intervention group, indicating short-term positive dietary change.

Abstract
Most diseases might be associated with acute or chronic inflammation, and the role of vitamin D in diseases has been extensively explored in recent years. Thus, we examined the associations of one of the best markers for inflammation ― C-reactive protein (CRP) with 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] in 24 specific diseases. We performed cross-sectional analyses among 9,809 subjects aged ≥18 years who participated in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2007~2010. The generalized additive model (GAM) was used to explore the associations of CRP with 25(OH)D in different diseases, adjusted for the age, gender, examination period and race. Distributions of CRP were significantly different (P < 0.05) in gender, examination period and race, and distributions of 25(OH)D were different (P < 0.05) in the examination period and race. Generally, CRP was negatively associated with 25(OH)D for majority diseases. 25(OH)D was negatively associated with CRP generally, and the associations were disease-specific and disease category-specific. In respiratory, gastrointestinal and mental diseases, the associations tended to be approximately linear. While in metabolic diseases, the associations were nonlinear, and the slope of the nonlinear curve decreased with 25(OH)D, especially when 25(OH)D < 30 μg/L.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency is associated with inflammation and oxidative stress. We have studied the association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] with markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. METHODS We have recruited total 180 male and female subjects aged between 30 and 50 years and divided them into two groups as control (n = 90) and T2DM (n = 90). We have measured 25(OH)D concentration, markers of inflammation including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and markers of oxidative stress including malondialdehyde (MDA) and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) by using standard methods. RESULTS We stratified control and T2DM groups by 25(OH)D concentration and it indicates that in severe deficiency and sufficiency category IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, and Ox-LDL were significantly different while in moderate deficiency category only MDA was significantly different, among control and T2DM groups. In an insufficiency category, IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, MDA, and Ox-LDL were significantly different among control and T2DM groups. Correlation analysis indicates a negative correlation of 25(OH)D with IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, and Ox-LDL among total subjects. Further, logistic regression analysis demonstrated a significant association of different categories of 25(OH)D with IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, and Ox-LDL before and after adjustment to body mass index and waist to hip ratio. CONCLUSION This study suggest that vitamin D may have significant implications in the prevention of inflammation and oxidative stress.

Abstract
Sarcopenic obesity and diabetes are two increasing health problems worldwide, which both share many common risk factors, such as aging, and general obesity. The pathogenesis of sarcopenic obesity includes aging, physical inactivity, malnutrition, low-grade inflammation, insulin resistance, and hormonal changes. Nevertheless, there are two major reasons to cause diabetes: impaired insulin secretion and impaired insulin action. Furthermore, the individual diagnosis of obesity and sarcopenia should be combined to adequately define sarcopenic obesity. Also, the diagnosis of diabetes includes fasting plasma glucose test (FPG), 2-h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), glycated hemoglobin (A1C), and random plasma glucose coupled with symptoms. Healthy diet and physical activity are beneficial to both sarcopenic obesity and diabetes, but there are only recommended drugs for diabetes. This review consolidates and discusses the latest research in pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatments of diabetes and sarcopenic obesity.
