Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence on whether systemic inflammation mediates the association between diet and depression and anxiety is lacking. METHODS We analyzed 55,799 participants from the UK Biobank, assessing dietary inflammatory index (DII) based on 3 days' 24-hour dietary recall. Systemic inflammation was represented by systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI). Incident depression and anxiety were ascertained through linkage to hospital records, and Cox proportional hazard regression models evaluated the associations, with mediation analysis performed for systemic inflammation. RESULTS DII ranged from -6.87 to 4.88 with a median of -0.67. After a median follow-up time of 9.12 years, 1409 were diagnosed with depression and 1806 with anxiety. Higher DII level is associated with the incident risk of depression (HRQ4vsQ1 = 1.20, 1.09-1.32, P < 0.001) and anxiety (HRQ4vsQ1 = 1.10, 1.00-1.21, P < 0.001). SIRI and SII respectively mediate 4.12 % (95 % CI = 1.30 %-23.3 %, P < 0.001) and 4.43 % (95 % CI = 1.89 %-43.75 %, P < 0.001) of the association between DII and depression incidence. As for anxiety, SIRI mediated 8.27 % (95 % CI = 1.44 %-15.31 %, P < 0.001) and SII mediated 4.19 % (95 % CI = 1.58 %-11.47 %, P < 0.001), respectively. LIMITATIONS The potential coexistence of anxiety and depression with other psychiatric disorders and limitations in data on changes in DII and inflammation markers over time may bias the findings. The study's generalization is constrained by the demographic of participants. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that DII is positively associated with depression and anxiety, which may be mediated by SII/SIRI.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Wuling capsule, composed of the traditional Chinese medicine Wuling mycelia powder, is made by fermenting and processing Xylaria nigripes (Kl.) Sacc. Clinically, it is commonly used to alleviate depression and anxiety. However, the mechanisms through which Wuling capsule exerts its therapeutic benefits have not been clearly defined. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aims to elucidate the mechanisms by which Wuling capsule alleviates depression and anxiety like behaviors induced by chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry system was used to identify the components of the Wuling capsule. Mice were subjected to CSDS to induce depression and anxiety-like behaviors. The expression of hypothalamic corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and Nesfatin-1, as well as serum levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone (CORT) were quantified. Behavioral assessments included the open field test, elevated plus maze, sucrose preference test, and forced swim test to evaluate depression and anxiety levels. Specific manipulation of Nesfatin-1 in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) or cells was achieved through stereotaxic virus injection or plasmid transfection. Intracerebral cannula implantation was used for PVN-specific drug administration. RESULTS A total of 123 different components were identified in Wuling capsule. CSDS induced depression and anxiety-like behaviors in mice, along with hyperactivation of the HPA axis, increased hypothalamic Nesfatin-1 levels, and elevated nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) phosphorylation. Overexpression of Nesfatin-1 in the hypothalamus mimicked the effects of CSDS. Conversely, knockdown of hypothalamic Nesfatin-1 or PVN-specific administration of Nesfatin-1 antibody or NF-κB antagonist mitigated CSDS-induced depression and anxiety-like behaviors and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hyperactivity. In neuroblastoma-2a (N2a) cells, overexpression of Nesfatin-1 led to increased NF-κB phosphorylation and CRH levels, whereas knockdown of Nesfatin-1 produced the opposite effects. Treatment with Wuling capsule alleviated CSDS-induced depression and anxiety-like behaviors, HPA axis hyperactivity, and activation of the hypothalamic Nesfatin-1/NF-κB pathway. CONCLUSIONS The hypothalamic Nesfatin-1/NF-κB pathway plays a significant role in depression by modulating the HPA axis and is involved in the antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of Wuling capsule.

Abstract
Background: Inflammation has been linked to an increased risk of depression, but there is limited and conflicting research on the role of inflammatory markers in adolescent depression. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 and depression among a community-based sample of adolescents (13-19 years of age). Methods: Salivary samples were self-collected by adolescents for assay of cytokines. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to measure depressive symptoms and clinical depression, where a score ≥11 indicated the threshold for experiencing clinical depression. Multiple linear and logistic regression models were used to examine the relationships between cytokines and depression, adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, income, and body mass index. Results: The mean age of the 83 participants was 15.86 years. Eight participants screened positive for depression; the mean depressive symptom score was 5.11. Higher levels of IL-6 (Coef = 1.33, p < .001) and IL-8 (Coef = 0.69, p = .025) were associated with more frequent depressive symptoms while higher levels of TNF-α (OR = 2.50, p = .002), IL-1β (OR = 1.98, p = .001), and IL-8 (OR = 2.44, p = .008) were associated with greater odds of meeting criteria for clinical depression. Conclusions: Future research should focus on factors that induce higher cytokine levels and the mechanisms underlying their effects on depression. Cytokines assessed in this study may ultimately have implications as methods for depression screening or targets for biologic interventions to prevent and treat adolescent depression.

Abstract
Purpose Mental disorders account for a large part of the burden of disease in young population. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between carbohydrate intakes and the risk of depression, anxiety, and stress among female adolescents. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 263 female adolescents aged 15-18 years participated. Depression, anxiety, and stress scores were determined by DASS-21 (Depression Anxiety Stress Score-21 items) questionnaire, and dietary intakes were assessed using a validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire. Crude and multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated through logistic regression analysis. Results Adolescents with depression consumed more glucose and sucrose and less lactose compared to adolescents without depression. After adjustment for all confounders, higher intakes of glucose and sucrose were significantly associated with increased risk of depression (OR glu = 1.3, P = 0.035 and OR suc = 1.41, P = 0.034), anxiety (OR glu = 1.3, P = 0.019 and OR suc = 1.81, P = 0.027), and stress (OR glu = 1.41, P = 0.046 and OR suc = 1.8, P = 0.044). In addition, increasing lactose intake was significantly associated with reducing the risk of depression (OR = 0.96, P = 0.013) and stress (OR = 0.96, P = 0.015). Conclusions This study found significant associations between dietary carbohydrate intake and mental disorders among female adolescent.

Abstract
AIMS In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and mental health outcomes among patients with migraine headaches. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 262 subjects were included. The dietary intakes were collected using a validated 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Items were scored according to their inflammatory potential, so a higher DII indicated a more pro-inflammatory diet. The association between DII and the mental health of participants was investigated using multinomial logistic regression and odds ratio (OR) with a corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) was reported. RESULTS Overall, 224 women and 38 men, with a mean (standard error) DII of -2.96 (0.06), age of 36.1 (0.53) years, and BMI of 25.55 (0.21) kg/m2, comprised our study population. DII was positively associated with a higher risk of depression in patients with the highest adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet compared to those with the lowest adherence (OR = 1.76; 95%CI: 1.04, 3.00; Ptrend = 0.035). Adjustments for age, sex, marital status, smoking status, migraine headache index score, number of family members, mean arterial pressure, medication, physical activity, and BMI intensified the association in a way that the risk of depression was 2.03 times higher in patients with the highest adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet compared to those with the lowest adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet (OR = 2.03; 95%CI: 1.18, 3.49; Ptrend = 0.011). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that depression was positively associated with adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet. However, no significant association was observed between anxiety and stress with DII.

Abstract
Depression is a common and severely debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder. Multiple studies indicate a strong correlation between the occurrence of immunological inflammation and the presence of depression. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) is crucial in the cognitive and physiological processing and control of emotion. However, due to the lack of detection tools, the neural activity of the BLA during depression is not well understood. In this study, a microelectrode array (MEA) based on the shape and anatomical location of the BLA in the brain was designed and manufactured. Rats were injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for 7 consecutive days to induce depressive behavior. We used the MEA to detect neural activity in the BLA before modeling, during modeling, and after LPS administration on 7 consecutive days. The results showed that after LPS treatment, the spike firing of neurons in the BLA region of rats gradually became more intense, and the local field potential power also increased progressively. Further analysis revealed that after LPS administration, the spike firing of BLA neurons was predominantly in the theta rhythm, with obvious periodic firing characteristics appearing after the 7 d of LPS administration, and the relative power of the local field potential in the theta band also significantly increased. In summary, our results suggest that the enhanced activity of BLA neurons in the theta band is related to the depressive state of rats, providing valuable guidance for research into the neural mechanisms of depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Arthritis is relatively common among middle-aged and older people and is a significant public health problem. However, research on the relationship between arthritis and mental health in older populations is currently limited. METHODS Data were obtained from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. The 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale were used to evaluate depressive and anxiety symptoms. Arthritis status was self-reported. Linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the impact of arthritis on depression, anxiety, and comorbid depression/anxiety symptoms. RESULTS A total of 11,104 participants aged ≥65 years (mean age, 83.1 ± 11.1 years) were included in the analysis. We detected positive associations of arthritis with depression symptoms (adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 1.57, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.33 to 1.86), anxiety symptoms (adjusted OR: 1.48, 95 % CI: 1.15 to 1.90), and comorbid depression/anxiety symptoms (adjusted OR: 1.88, 95 % CI: 1.41 to 2.5) in the older adult population. Participants with arthritis had higher anxiety (adjusted linear regression coefficient: 0.43, 95 % CI: 0.24 to 0.63) and depression (adjusted linear regression coefficient: 0.87, 95 % CI: 0.57 to 1.14) scores compared with those without arthritis. In addition, there were no significant interaction effects between arthritis and participant characteristics on depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, or comorbid depression/anxiety symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Arthritis was positively associated with depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and comorbid depression/anxiety symptoms among older adults. Further cohort studies are needed to validate these associations.

Abstract
The brain is the central organ of adaptation to stress because it perceives and determines threats that induce behavioral, physiological, and molecular responses. In humans, chronic stress manifests as an enduring consistent feeling of pressure and being overwhelmed for an extended duration. This can result in a persistent proinflammatory response in the peripheral and central nervous system (CNS), resulting in cellular, physiological, and behavioral effects. Compounding stressors may increase the risk of chronic-stress-induced inflammation, which can yield serious health consequences, including mental health disorders. This review summarizes the current knowledge surrounding the neuroinflammatory response in rodent models of chronic stress-a relationship that is continually being defined. Many studies investigating the effects of chronic stress on neuroinflammation in rodent models have identified significant changes in inflammatory modulators, including nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and toll-like receptors (TLRs), and cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6. This suggests that these are key inflammatory factors in the chronic stress response, which may contribute to the establishment of anxiety and depression-like symptoms. The behavioral and neurological effects of modulating inflammatory factors through gene knockdown (KD) and knockout (KO), and conventional and alternative medicine approaches, are discussed.

Abstract
The microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis is a complex communication network linking the gut, microbiota, and brain, influencing various aspects of health and disease. Dysbiosis, a disturbance in the gut microbiome equilibrium, can significantly impact the MGB axis, leading to alterations in microbial composition and function. Emerging evidence highlights the connection between microbiota alterations and neurological and psychiatric disorders, including depression. This review explores the potential of psychobiotics in managing depressive disorders, emphasizing their role in restoring microbial balance and influencing the MGB axis. Psychobiotics exhibit positive effects on the intestinal barrier, immune response, cortisol levels, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Studies suggest that probiotics may serve as an adjunct therapy for depression, especially in treatment-resistant cases. This review discusses key findings from studies on psychobiotics interventions, emphasizing their impact on the gut-brain axis and mental health. The increasing acceptance of the expanded concept of the MGB axis underscores the importance of microorganisms in mental well-being. As our understanding of the microbiome's role in health and disease grows, probiotics emerge as promising agents for addressing mental health issues, providing new avenues for therapeutic interventions in depressive disorders.

Abstract
Importance Depression is among the most common comorbidities in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). There is a lack of data regarding the association of RA seropositivity and biologic agents with depression risk among individuals with RA. Objective To investigate the risk of depression following RA diagnosis among patients in South Korea. Design, Setting, and Participants This retrospective cohort study included 38 487 patients with RA and a comparison group of 192 435 individuals matched 1:5 for age, sex, and index date. Data were from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Participants were enrolled from 2010 to 2017 and were followed up until 2019. Participants who had previously been diagnosed with depression or were diagnosed with depression within 1 year after the index date were excluded. Statistical analysis was performed in May 2023. Exposures Seropositive RA (SPRA) was defined with the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes M05 and enrollment in the Korean Rare and Intractable Diseases program. Seronegative RA (SNRA) was defined with ICD-10 codes M06 (excluding M06.1 and M06.4) and a prescription of any disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) for 270 days or more. Main Outcomes and Measures Newly diagnosed depression (ICD-10 codes F32 or F33). Results The mean (SD) age of the total study population was 54.6 (12.1) years, and 163 926 individuals (71.0%) were female. During a median (IQR) follow-up of 4.1 (2.4-6.2) years, 27 063 participants (20 641 controls and 6422 with RA) developed depression. Participants with RA had a 1.66-fold higher risk of depression compared with controls (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.66 [95% CI, 1.61-1.71]). The SPRA group (aHR, 1.64 [95% CI, 1.58-1.69]) and the SNRA group (aHR, 1.73 [95% CI, 1.65-1.81]) were associated with an increased risk of depression compared with controls. Patients with RA who used biologic or targeted synthetic DMARDs (aHR, 1.33 [95% CI, 1.20-1.47]) had a lower risk of depression compared with patients with RA who did not use these medications (aHR, 1.69 [95% CI, 1.64-1.74]). Conclusions and Relevance This nationwide cohort study found that both SPRA and SNRA were associated with a significantly higher risk of depression. These results suggest the importance of early screening and intervention for mental health in patients with RA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental disorders such as depression, anxiety and stress are becoming more common worldwide. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between dietary inflammations scores (DIS) and lifestyle inflammation scores (LIS) and the risk of depression, stress, and anxiety in a large sample of Iranian adults. METHODS This study was based on 5579 adults (20-70 years) who participated in the Yazd Health Study (YaHS). The DIS score was calculated from the intake of 19 food groups and the LIS score was derived from four components. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio (ORs) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) of depression, stress, and anxiety across quartiles of DIS and LIS. RESULTS 2749 of the participants (46 % male) had anxiety, depression and stress. According to the adjusted model, there was a positive association between LIS and the risk of anxiety (OR: 1.23, 95 % CI: 1.01-1.49) and depression (OR: 1.39, 95 % CI: 1.14-1.69, P for trend: 0.03). However, there was no significant association between LIS and the risk of stress. There was also no significant association between DIS and the risk of anxiety, depression and stress. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that higher LIS scores were associated with depression and anxiety. It is suggested that following a LIS that includes smoking status, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and body mass index as indicators of the inflammatory promoting lifestyle, may increase the risk of depression and anxiety.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is generally among the most prevalent psychiatric illnesses. Significant advances have occurred in comprehension of the MDD biology. However, it is still essential to recognize new biomarkers for potential targeted treatment of patients with MDD. The present work deals with in-depth comparative computational analyses to obtain new insights, such as gene ontology and pathway enrichment analyses and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) through gene expression dataset. The expression of selected hub-genes was validated in MDD patients using quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). We found that MDD progression includes the turquoise module genes (p-value = 1e-18, r = 0.97). According to gene enrichment analysis, the cytokine-mediated signaling pathway mostly involves genes in this module. By selection of four candidate hub-genes (IL6, NRG1, TNF, and BDNF), RT-qPCR validation was performed. A significant NRG1 downregulation was revealed by the RT-qPCR outcomes in MDD. In MDD patients, TNF and IL6 expression were considerably higher, and no considerable differences were found in the BDNF expression. Ultimately, based on ROC analyses, IL6, NRG1, and TNF had a higher MDD diagnostic performance. Therefore, our study presents information on the intricate association between MDD development and cytokine-mediated signaling, thus providing new rationales to develop new therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study evaluated how high versus low-intensity community wellness coaching and health behaviors were associated with changes in depression screen results over one year. METHODS This was an analysis of secondary data collected in a 12-month obesity-related community health worker (CHW) program for 485 Utah women of color. Depression screen (Patient Health Questionnaire-2 score ³3) and self-reported fruit/vegetable consumption and physical activity (FV/PA) were recorded quarterly. Associations between FV/PA and changes in depression screen over time were evaluated in multivariable models. RESULTS Positive depression screen prevalence declined over 12 months (21.7% to 9.5%) with no difference between study arms. Overall, FV ³5 times/day (AOR=1.5; 95% CI 1.0-2.2), any PA (AOR=3.1; 95% CI 1.5-6.4), and muscle strengthening activities (AOR=1.13; 95% CI 1.01-1.26) were associated with improved depression screen results over time. CONCLUSION These results indicate value in addressing and evaluating depression in obesity-related interventions in underserved communities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation is considered to be a link between diabetes and central nervous system (CNS) disorders, including depression and anxiety. Metformin is suggested to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and mood-improving effects. The aim of the current research was to investigate the effects of the antidiabetic drug metformin on depressive- and anxiety- like behaviors and oxidative stress in the brain in a rodent model of inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in male rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS The rats were treated as follows: (1) Vehicle instead of metformin and lipopolysaccharide, (2) Lipopolysaccharide (1 mg/ kg) + vehicle instead of metformin, (3-5) Lipopolysaccharide + 50, 100, or 150 mg/ kg of metformin. After the behavioral tests, including open field (OF), elevated pulse maze (EPM), and force swimming (FS) tests, the brains were removed, and malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) metabolites, total thiol, catalase (CAT) activity, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were determined. RESULTS In the EPM, metformin increased the open arm time and entry and decreased closed arm time and entry. In the FS test, metformin lowered the immobility and increased active time compared to lipopolysaccharide. In the OF test, metformin increased total crossing and total distance, time spent, traveled distance, and crossing number in the central zone. As a result of metformin administration, IL-6, MDA, and NO metabolites were decreased while thiol content, SOD, and CAT activity were increased. CONCLUSION The results indicated that the well-known antidiabetic drug metformin attenuated depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors induced by inflammation in rats. These beneficial effects are suggested to be due to their attenuating effects on neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and NO in the brain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a common mental ailment and is the primary reason for disability. It manifests a severe impact on moods, thoughts, and physical health. At present, this disorder has become a concern in the field of public health. Alteration of neurochemicals is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of many psychiatric disorders. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate serum IL-3 and lipocalin-2 in MDD patients and healthy controls (HCs). METHOD We included a total of 376 participants in this study. Among them, 196 were MDD patients, and 180 were age-sex-matched HCs. MDD patients were recruited from the Psychiatry Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), but the controls were from different parts of Dhaka. All study participants were evaluated by a psychiatrist using the DSM-5 criteria. To assess the severity of the depression, we used the Hamilton depression (Ham-D) rating scale. Serum IL-3 and lipocalin-2 levels were measured using commercially available enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay kits (ELISA kits). RESULTS According to this study, we observed elevated serum levels of IL-3 (1,024.73 ± 29.84 pg/mL) and reduced levels of serum lipocalin-2 (29.019 ± 2.073 ng/mL) in MDD patients compared to HCs (911.11 ± 20.55 pg/mL and 48.065 ± 3.583 ng/mL, respectively). No associations between serum levels of IL-3 and lipocalin-2 and depression severity were observed in patients. CONCLUSIONS According to the present findings, alterations of serum IL-3 and lipocalin might be associated with the pathogenesis of MDD. These results support that altered serum neurochemicals can serve as early risk assessment markers for depression. Further interventional studies are recommended for a better understanding of the role of IL-3 and lipocalin-2 in the pathophysiology of depression.

Evaluation of Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Activities, and Metabolite Profiling of Selected Medicinal Plants of Nepal. J Trop Med 2023; 2023:6641018. Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant, antiarthritic, and anti-inflammatory properties of extracts from the leaves of twelve different medicinal plants in Nepal. We then evaluated the total phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin contents of the extract using in-vitro assays and characterized it using GC-MS analysis. Results revealed that most of the leaf extracts contained phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and saponins. Few plants also showed the presence of glycosides, phytate, and vitamin C. Among the studied plants, Neolamarckia cadamba exhibited the highest total phenolic and tannin contents, as 241.53 ± 0.20 µg of gallic acid equivalent/mg and 74.48 ± 1.081 µg of tannic acid equivalent/mg, respectively. Ipomoea batatas exhibited the highest total flavonoid content, as 53.051 ± 1.11 µg of quercetin equivalent/mg. Moreover, Raphanus sativus demonstrated significant ferrous ion chelating, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, and total antioxidant activities with IC50 value of 4.76 ± 0.68 µg/mL, 5.84 ± 0.14 µg/mL, 6.89 ± 0.16 µg/mL, and 8.99 ± 0.20 µg/mL, respectively. Similarly, Colocasia esculenta and Cicer arietinum exhibited the highest hydroxyl radical and nitric oxide scavenging activities, measuring IC50 value of 7.22 ± 0.56 µg/mL and 9.06 ± 0.10 µg/mL, respectively. Among all the extracts, Amorphophallus paeoniifolius displayed significant human red blood cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization activity (IC50 = 6.22 ± 0.78 µg/mL). Furthermore, Raphanus sativus, Chenopodium album, Cicer arietinum, and Murraya koenigii exhibited the highest inhibitory activities against protein denaturation with bovine serum albumin, antiarthritic, lipoxygenase inhibitory, and proteinase inhibitory, measuring IC50 of 7.48 ± 0.48 µg/mL, 9.44 ± 1.62 µg/mL, 14.67 ± 1.94 µg/mL, and 28.57 ± 2.39 µg/mL, respectively. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the twelve leaf extracts' significant antioxidant, antiarthritic, and anti-inflammatory activities.

Abstract
Depression is a severe mental disorder, with approximately 300 million people suffering from it. Recent studies have demonstrated that chronic neuroinflammation is significantly associated with intestinal flora and barrier function in depression. As a therapeutic herb, garlic (Allium sativum L.) has detoxification, antibacterial activity, and antiinflammatory functions; however, its antidepressant effect through gut microbiota and barrier function has not been reported yet. The present study investigated the effect of garlic essential oil (GEO) and its active constituent diallyl disulfide (DADS) on depressive behavior by attenuating the NLRP3 inflammasome, alternating intestinal barrier function and gut microbiota in an unpredictable chronic mild stress (US) model in rats. This study found that dopamine and serotonin turnover rates were reduced significantly with a low dose of GEO (25 mg per kg bw). The GEO groups effectively reversed sucrose preference and increased the total distance traveled in the behavioral test. Moreover, 25 mg per kg bw GEO inhibited the UCMS-induced activated inflammatory response, reflected by reduced expression in the frontal cortex of NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, and its downstream IL-1β proteins, as well as the concentration of IL-1β and TNF-α in the serum. Supplementation with GEO increased the expression of occludin and ZO-1 and the concentration of short-chain fatty acids to influence the impact of intestinal permeability in depressive conditions. The results revealed that GEO administration caused significant changes in the α and β diversity and abundance of certain bacteria. At the genus level, GEO administration significantly increased the relative abundance, particularly beneficial SCFA-producing bacteria, and may improve depression-like behavior. In conclusion, these results indicated the antidepressant effects of GEO involved in the inflammatory pathway, short-chain fatty acids, intestinal integrity, and intestinal composition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Observational studies have revealed a link between major depressive disorder (MDD) and a higher chance of developing atrial fibrillation (AF). It is still uncertain whether or not this correlation indicates a causal relationship. This research set out to evaluate the causal impact of MDD on AF. METHODS To evaluate the causal relationship between MDD and AF, we employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) method. A new genome-wide association study (GWAS) with 500,199 participants was used to obtain an overview of the association of genetic variations with MDD. An additional GWAS incorporating 1,030,836 people provided data on the relationship between gene variants and AF. The inverse-variance weighted technique was utilized to assess the effect sizes. Sensitivity analysis included the use of other statistical approaches such as weighted median, Outlier, MR Pleiotropy Residual Sum, weighted mode, simple mode, and MR - Egger. RESULTS By employing 47 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as markers, MR analyses in random-effect inverse-variance weighted models found that genetically projected MDD was linked to an elevated incidence of AF (odds ratio [OR] = 1.098, 95% CI 1.000-1.206; P = 0.049). No gene pleiotropy was discovered as indicated by MR-Egger (intercept= -0.011, P = 0.169). Sensitivity analysis employing other MR techniques yielded reliable results. CONCLUSION This MR study established a causal relationship between genetically predicted MDD and an elevated risk of AF.

Abstract
Patients after liver transplantation are often impacted by mental and even neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, sleep disorders, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Neuropsychiatric sequelae have an adverse impact on rehabilitation and can even incapacitate people, reducing their quality of life. Despite screening tools and effective treatments, neuropsychiatric sequelae after liver transplantation (NSALT) have not been fully diagnosed and treated. Current research suggests that NSALT may be partly related to intestinal microbial variation, but the detailed mechanism remains unclear. In this review, we describe the clinical and diagnostic features, prevalence, prediction, clinical course and outcome, management, and treatment of NSALT; we also summarize their mechanisms through the microbiota-gut-liver-brain axis. Finally, we propose to improve NSALT on the basis of adjusting the gastrointestinal flora, immune inflammation or vagus nerve (VN), providing a novel strategy for clinical prevention and treatment.

Abstract
Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, contributing to the global disease burden. From above, it is a priority to investigate models that fully explain its physiopathology to develop new treatments. In the last decade, many studies have shown that gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis influences brain functions and participate, in association with immunity, in the pathogenesis of depression. Thereby, GM modulation could be a novel therapeutic target for depression. This review aims to evidence how the GM and the immune system influence mental illness, particularly depression. Here, we focus on the communication mechanisms between the intestine and the brain and the impact on the development of neuroinflammation contributing to the development of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). However, most of the current findings are in animal models, suggesting the need for studies in humans. In addition, more analysis of metabolites and cytokines are needed to identify new pathophysiological mechanisms improving anti-depression treatments.

Abstract
There is growing evidence that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is associated with increased risks of psychiatric sequelae. Depression, anxiety, cognitive impairments, sleep disturbance, and fatigue during and after the acute phase of COVID-19 are prevalent, long-lasting, and exerting negative consequences on well-being and imposing a huge burden on healthcare systems and society. This current review presented timely updates of clinical research findings, particularly focusing on the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying the neuropsychiatric sequelae, and identified potential key targets for developing effective treatment strategies for long COVID. In addition, we introduced the Formosa Long COVID Multicenter Study (FOCuS), which aims to apply the inflammation theory to the pathogenesis and the psychosocial and nutrition treatments of post-COVID depression and anxiety.

Abstract
Objective: Altered levels of peripheral inflammatory and proinflammatory cytokine markers affect the different clinical stages of major depressive disorder (MDD). A concrete understanding of the causal mechanism of MDD is a prerequisite in developing treatment strategies and preventive plans. Here we aimed to conduct an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of studies assessing the association of C-reactive protein (CRP), INF-γ, MCP-1, and TNF-α in the peripheral fluid of drug-naïve MDD patients and healthy controls (HCs). Methods: We extracted articles from PubMed, ProQuest, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from inception until 14 February 2021, to find relevant studies. In this meta-analysis, we included a total of 23 eligible studies (1,366 MDD patients and 1,342 controls) in the final meta-analysis. The Cochran's chi-square Q-test and I2-index were applied to measure the heterogeneity and inconsistency of all combined results. We selected a random-effect model during the analysis and measured publication biases using the funnel plot. We performed Bonferroni adjustment for multiple testing. Results: We found a high level of TNF-α in MDD patients than in control subjects Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) with a random-effects model: 1.04, 95% CI: 0.69-1.39, z = 5.84, p < 0.001). The levels of CRP (SMD with a random-effects model: 0.18, 95% CI: -0.85-1.23, z = 0.35, p = 0.73), INF-ɤ (SMD with a random-effects model: -0.05, 95% CI: -2.72-2.62, z = 0.03, p = 0.97), and MCP-1 (SMD with a random-effects model: 0.70, 95% CI: -0.09-1.49, z = 1.73, p = 0.08) were not significantly varies between MDD patients and HCs. Conclusion: The present study findings suggest the upregulated level of peripheral TNF-α but not CRP, INF-γ, and MCP-1 involve in depression. The elevated inflammatory cytokines confirmed the inflammatory state of depression. Therefore, inflammatory cytokines might serve as potential risk assessment markers in MDD.

Abstract
Objectives Numerous earlier studies have stated an association between major depressive disorder (MDD) and altered expression of inflammatory process. However, it still needs to determine whether the alteration of cytokines is the causative factor or a consequence of this disorder. Therefore, we attempted to evaluate the role of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-2 in the pathophysiology of depression. Methods We collected blood samples from 111 MDD patients and 112 healthy controls (HCs) matched by age and sex. Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-5) score was used to assess study participants. We determined the severity of depression using the Hamilton Depression (Ham-D) rating scale. We assayed serum levels of IL-2 using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) kit. Results Elevated levels of IL-2 were detected in MDD patients than HCs (29.79 ± 6.18 and 12.77 ± 4.84 pg/ml, P < 0.05). We observed a higher level of IL-2 in female MDD patients compared to female HCs (31.98 ± 8.34 and 7.76 ± 0.36 pg/ml, P < 0.05). We witnessed a sex-specific correlation between the serum IL-2 levels and the Ham-D score and found that the females with higher Ham-D scores had higher serum IL-2 levels. Moreover, the ROC curve represented the good diagnostic performance of serum IL-2 levels as a biomarker with sensitivity and specificity values of 83.7% and 80.4%, respectively. Conclusions The current study findings indicate that elevated serum IL-2 levels are associated with MDD. This alteration may be the cause of triggering depression or a result of the activated inflammatory process during the depression. Therefore, we recommend further interventional research to clarify the actual reasons for these altered IL-2 levels in MDD patients.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have suggested the involvement of an activated inflammatory process in major depressive disorder (MDD), as altered expression of inflammatory cytokines is observed in depression. This alteration can be the cause or a consequence of MDD. However, acknowledging inflammatory cytokines as prospective biomarkers would aid in diagnosing or guiding better therapeutic options. Therefore, we designed this study to assess the macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in depression. Method We collected blood samples from 115 MDD patients and 113 healthy controls (HCs) matched by age and sex. MDD patients were diagnosed by a qualified psychiatrist based on the symptoms mentioned in the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-5). We applied the Hamilton depression (Ham-D) rating scale to assess the severity of depression. We assessed serum levels of MIF using ELISA kit (Boster Bio, USA). Result We detected increased serum MIF levels in MDD patients compared to HCs (6.15 ± 0.23 ng/mL vs 3.95 ± 0.21 ng/mL, P < 0.001). Moreover, this increase is more among female patients than female controls. Also, we noticed a positive correlation between altered MIF levels and the Ham-D scores (r = 0.233; P = 0.012), where we found that patients who scored higher on the Ham-D scale had higher MIF levels in serum. Moreover, the area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve represented the good diagnostic performance of altered serum MIF. Conclusion Our study findings indicate the association of pro-inflammatory cytokine MIF in the pathophysiology of depression as we identified elevated serum MIF levels in depressive patients compared to HCs. However, more researches are required to confirm whether this alteration of cytokine is the causative factor or a consequence of depression. We recommend conducting further studies to understand the pattern of this alteration of MIF levels in MDD patients.

Abstract
This study examined the association between the energy-adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DII)-based dietary inflammatory potential and depressive symptoms (DepS) among patients with breast cancer and explores whether systemic inflammation mediates this association. We assessed dietary intake and DepS in 220 breast cancer patients by three 24 h dietary recalls and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), respectively, and determined plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, and IL-6 in 123 blood samples. We found that each one-point increase of E-DII was related to a 53% elevated risk of DepS. Patients with the most pro-inflammatory diets had a 5.13 times higher risk of DepS than those with the most anti-inflammatory diets. Among the E-DII components, vitamin B2, zinc, and iron were inversely associated with DepS risk. Furthermore, E-DII scores were positively associated with CRP and TNF-α. Higher levels of TNF-α and IL-6 were associated with higher DepS risk. A significant mediating effect of TNF-α was revealed between E-DII and DepS. Our findings suggest that a pro-inflammatory diet is positively associated with breast cancer-related DepS, which may be mediated by TNF-α.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study was designed to examine the relationship between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and depression, anxiety and stress in Iranian men with spinal cord injury (SCI). DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Mottahary SCI clinic, Isfahan, Iran. PARTICIPANTS The current study was conducted on 150 men with SCI aged 40-65 years. OUTCOME MEASURES Dietary data were collected using a semi-quantitative 148 item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) was used to assess the psychological profile of the participants. RESULTS The DII score ranged from -3.62 to 4.02. Overall, 34% of study participants had at least mild levels of depression and anxiety symptoms and 25% had at least mild levels of stress symptoms. A one-unit increase in the DII was significantly associated with higher scores of depressive symptoms (β = 1.31, 95% CI 0.44-2.18; P = 0.003). Also, a one-unit increase in the DII was associated with higher odds of having at least mild depressive symptoms (OR = 1.77, 95% CI 1.17, 2.67; P = 0.007). No significant association was found between the DII and anxiety and stress. CONCLUSION The present study indicated that a higher DII score is associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms in men with SCI. These initial findings highlight the crucial role of the inflammatory potential of diet in the mental health of subjects with SCI. Future prospective studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

Abstract
For 2.5 years we have been facing the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and its health, social and economic effects. One of its known consequences is the development of neuropsychiatric diseases such as anxiety and depression. However, reports of manic episodes related to COVID-19 have emerged. Mania is an integral part of the debilitating illness-bipolar disorder (BD). Due to its devastating effects, it is therefore important to establish whether SARS-CoV-2 infection is a causative agent of this severe mental disorder. In this narrative review, we discuss the similarities between the disorders caused by SARS-CoV-2 and those found in patients with BD, and we also try to answer the question of whether SARS-CoV-2 infection may be a risk factor for the development of this affective disorder. Our observation shows that disorders in COVID-19 showing the greatest similarity to those in BD are cytokine disorders, tryptophan metabolism, sleep disorders and structural changes in the central nervous system (CNS). These changes, especially intensified in severe infections, may be a trigger for the development of BD in particularly vulnerable people, e.g., with family history, or cause an acute episode in patients with a pre-existing BD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS One of the extraosseous effects of vitamin D is that it is a potent modulator of inflammatory processes. Many studies have demonstrated the inverse association between vitamin D and inflammation. Therefore, we hypothesize that vitamin D deficiency may affect the inflammatory markers derived from hemogram parameters [neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), platelet distribution width (PDW), red blood cell distribution width (RDW)] in healthy children. METHODS AND RESULTS We conducted a retrospective study on healthy children. From 2015 to 2020, 16,321 children with simultaneous vitamin D and hemogram measurements were identified from electronic records. Participants were divided into 2 groups according to whether they had vitamin D deficiency or not. The relationship between vitamin D status and the levels of inflammatory markers was analyzed. All inflammatory markers showed statistically significant differences between vitamin D status (p < 0.001 for all). Vitamin D levels were significantly negatively correlated with NLR (r = -0.285), PLR (r = -0.257), PDW (r = -0.181), and positively correlated with LMR (r = 0.218), and RDW (r = 0.057). In logistic regression analysis, age (OR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.14-1.16), gender (OR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.54-1.78), LMR (OR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.95-0.98), PLR (OR = 1.003, 95% CI: 1.001-1.004), and RDW (OR = 1.10, 95%CI: 1.07-1.13) were found to be independent predictors for vitamin D deficiency. CONCLUSIONS Statistically significant differences were detected between vitamin D status and inflammatory parameters. However, the difference between the median values of vitamin D groups was very small and the degree of correlation was very weak. Therefore, the clinical significance of the difference should be questioned.

Abstract
Neurological and psychiatric disorders are a category of chronic diseases that are widespread and pose serious mental and physical health problems for patients. The substrates, products, and enzymes of Tryptophan metabolism all contribute to the development of neurological and psychiatric disorders. This paper deals with three metabolic pathways of tryptophan that produce a series of metabolites called tryptophan Catabolics (TRYCATs). These metabolites are involved in pathological processes such as excitotoxicity, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial damage and are closely associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and depression. Here, we review the elements that affect how tryptophan metabolism is regulated, including inflammation and stress, exercise, vitamins, minerals, diet and gut microbes, glucocorticoids, and aging, as well as the downstream regulatory effects of tryptophan metabolism, including the regulation of glutamate (Glu), immunity, G-protein coupled receptor 35 (Gpr35), nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), and dopamine (DA). In order to advance the general understanding of tryptophan metabolism in neurological and psychiatric disorders, this paper also summarizes the current situation and effective drugs of tryptophan metabolism in the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders and considers its future research prospects.

Abstract
Depression is a debilitating psychiatric disorder impacting an individual’s quality of life. It is the most prevalent mental illness across all age categories, incurring huge socio-economic impacts. Most depression treatments currently focus on the elevation of neurotransmitters according to the monoamine hypothesis. Conventional treatments include tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), norepinephrine–dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Despite numerous pharmacological strategies utilising conventional drugs, the discovery of alternative medicines from natural products is a must for safer and beneficial brain supplement. About 30% of patients have been reported to show resistance to drug treatments coupled with functional impairment, poor quality of life, and suicidal ideation with a high relapse rate. Hence, there is an urgency for novel discoveries of safer and highly effective depression treatments. Stingless bee honey (SBH) has been proven to contain a high level of antioxidants compared to other types of honey. This is a comprehensive review of the potential use of SBH as a new candidate for antidepressants from the perspective of the monoamine, inflammatory and neurotrophin hypotheses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diet is considered as one of the modifiable factors that appears to exert a vital role in psychological status. In this way, we designed this study to examine the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII), dietary antioxidant index (DAI), and mental health in female adolescents. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 364 female adolescents selected from high schools in the five regions of Tabriz, Iran. A 3-day food record was used to extract the dietary data and calculate DII/DAI scores. DII and DAI were estimated to assess the odds of depression, anxiety, and stress based on the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21. Adjusted relationships of the DII and DAI with depression, anxiety, and stress were determined using multiple regression after adjusting for age, energy intake, BMI, family income and mother and father education. Overweight was defined as body mass index (BMI)-for-age > + 1 z-score relative to world health organization standards. RESULTS Depression, anxiety, and stress were observed in 21.4%, 26.6%, and 25.7% of subjects, respectively. The percentage of overweight among adolescents was 19.4%. The association between DII and score of mental health profile was positive among subjects in the third tertile of DII compared to subjects in the first tertile. However, this association was not statistically significant after adjusting for confounding variables. Moreover, there was a significant inverse association between DAI and depression and anxiety; and a statistically insignificant association between DAI and stress after adjusting for confounders. CONCLUSIONS Our results highlighted the importance of a healthy and anti-inflammatory diet on mental health in female adolescents. Therefore, modifying unhealthy dietary habits are likely to be effective in the management of psychosocial disorders.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common condition that affects the general population over a wide range of ages, regardless of gender and social background. Early-onset of MDD in adulthood, between ages of 18 and 30 years, is associated with worse outcomes and increased years of disability. Stress load and physical health have been associated with age of onset in MDD. We aim to investigate whether early onset MDD might be associated with changes in systemic inflammatory markers. We examined levels of following cytokines: IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 and TNFα in 234 patients with MDD. Higher serum levels of TNFα and IL-1β are associated with the early onset of the disorder in patients with MDD. IL-6 levels were also higher in the early onset group and IL-10 levels were higher in the late onset group, but with no significant difference. Changes in the anti-inflammatory/pro-inflammatory balance have been described in mood disorders and may be implicated in its severity and pattern of progression. Our findings reinforce that higher serum levels of IL-1β and TNFα may be associated with the earlier onset subgroup of MDD patients. Future research that target inflammatory markers of immune modulation may be, key in the search for novel preventative therapeutics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a possible influence factor for the increased risk of incident atrial fibrillation (AF). Although several investigations have assessed their association, the results are still controversial. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between depression or using antidepressants and AF. METHODS We systemically performed the literature retrieval from two electronic databases PubMed and EMBASE until March 2022 to extract relevant data. The hazard ratios (HRs) and odds ratios (OR) from included studies with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were adjusted into the risk ratio (RR) and pooled by using the random-effects model. RESULTS Totally 9 studies about the associations between depression or antidepressants and incident AF risk were included in this meta-analysis. Among them, 5 studies specifically analyzed the impact of antidepressants on the risk of AF. The outcomes of our analysis indicated that depression or depressive symptoms could increase AF risk (RR = 1.15, 95% CI, 1.03-1.27, P < 0.01). In addition, the use of antidepressants can also increase AF risk (RR = 1.16, 95% CI, 1.07-1.25, P < 0.001). These results remained unchanged when we remove the source of heterogeneity or adjust the analysis model into the fixed-effects model. CONCLUSIONS Based on existing investigations, both depression and the use of antidepressants are closely related to the increase of incident AF risk.

Abstract
Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) are tiny vesicles used by cells as means of cellular communication, through which the function and state of a given cell can be changed. A body of evidence has suggested that EVs could be culprits in the development and progression of various types of diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Unsurprisingly, EVs have also been implicate in mood, anxiety and neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), anxiety disorder and Autism-Spectrum Disorder (ASD), respectively. Here, we review the state-of-art regarding the roles of EVs in the aforementioned diseases and focus on the mechanisms by which they can cause and worsen disease. Harnessing the knowledge of EVs is not only important to deliver different cargos to cells in a specific manner to treat these diseases, but also to establish reliable disease biomarkers, which will aid in the early disease diagnosis and treatment, increasing the chance of successful treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sedentary behaviours (SBs) are now considered a risk factor for depression. Older adults are sedentary most of the time and are at a high risk of depression. However, not all types of SBs have adverse effects on mental health. Passive SBs (such as watching TV) increase the risk of depression, whereas mentally active SBs (such as using the internet and reading) decrease the risk of depression. The aim of this study was to explore the associations between type of SBs (i.e., passive and mentally active SBs) and depression among people aged 60 years and older in the Hebei Province of China. METHODS This cross-sectional study used data from the baseline survey of the Community-based Cohort Study on Nervous System Diseases. A total of 2679 older adults aged ≥60 years from the Hebei Province of China were included in this study. The type and time spent on SBs were self-reported. Watching TV was defined as a passive SB, whereas internet use, reading, and social SBs (including communicating with others and playing chess) were defined as mentally active SBs. Depression was evaluated using the Geriatric Depression Scale. The maximal possible score was 30 points, and ≥ 11 points indicated depression. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between SBs and depression. Covariates included sex, age, education, employment, smoking, alcohol consumption, sleep duration, domestic work, physical exercise, body mass index (BMI), and chronic diseases. RESULTS At baseline, the participants who spent two or more hours and 0 h on passive SBs (i.e., TV viewing) had a greater risk of depression (=0 h: adjusted OR = 2.09, 95% CI = 1.18-3.76; 2-3 h: OR = 2.21, 95% CI = 1.16-4.16; > 3 h: OR = 3.59, 95% CI = 1.93-6.68) than the participants who spent 1-2 h on passive SBs. The participants who spent > 1 h on mentally active SBs had a lower risk of depression (adjusted OR = 0.26, 95% CI = 0.06-0.71) than the participants who did not engage in mentally active SBs. Not all mentally active SBs were linked to depression. The participants who engaged in social SBs had a lower risk of depression (adjusted OR: 0.24, 95% CI: 0.06-0.66) than the participants who did not engage in social SBs. CONCLUSIONS Spending 2 h or more per day on passive SBs (watching TV) was associated with a high risk of depression among people aged 60 years and older in the Hebei Province of China. Mentally active SBs (predominantly social SBs) could reduce the risk of depression. Some participants with depression probably did not watch TV. These findings suggested that spending more time on social SBs (such as communicating with others and playing chess) rather than watching TV may have important public health implications for preventing and managing depression among older Chinese adults. Moreover, society should attend to the mental health of elderly adults who do not watch TV as they may be more prone to suffer from depressive symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The interleukin-6/janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (IL-6/JAK2/STAT3) pathway plays an important role in immune function, but little research has focused on this pathway in depression. We sought to examine the relationship between the IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 pathway and depressive-like behavior. METHODS Using a chronic mild stress (CMS) paradigm, a total of 36 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four matched groups: (1) control + vehicle, (2) CMS + vehicle, (3) control + paroxetine, and (4) CMS + paroxetine. We investigated the effects of CMS on depressive-like behavior by using the forced swimming test (FST). Subsequently, the mRNA levels of members of the IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 pathway were assessed by qRT-PCR. RESULTS We found that rats exposed to CMS displayed a significant increase in immobility time and a decrease in climbing time in the FST. Moreover, mRNA levels of IL-6, JAK2, and STAT3 in the hypothalamus were increased following CMS. We also found that mRNA levels of IL-6, JAK2, and STAT3 were normalized by paroxetine administration, which coincided with normalization of the depressive-like behavior. CONCLUSIONS The IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 pathway may be activated in depression, and targeting this pathway may provide a novel effective therapeutic approach for the treatment of depression.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic is spreading around the world and 187 million people have already been affected. One of its after-effects is post-COVID depression, which, according to the latest data, affects up to 40% of people who have had SARS-CoV-2 infection. A very important issue for the mental health of the general population is to look for the causes of this complication and its biomarkers. This will help in faster diagnosis and effective treatment of the affected patients. In our work, we focused on the search for major depressive disorder (MDD) biomarkers, which are also present in COVID-19 patients and may influence the development of post-COVID depression. For this purpose, we searched PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar scientific literature databases using keywords such as 'COVID-19', 'SARS-CoV-2', 'depression', 'post-COVID', 'biomarkers' and others. Among the biomarkers found, the most important that were frequently described are increased levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6), soluble interleukin 6 receptor (sIL-6R), interleukin 1 β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin 10 (IL-10), interleukin 2 (IL-2), soluble interleukin 2 receptor (sIL-2R), C-reactive protein (CRP), Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP-1), serum amyloid a (SAA1) and metabolites of the kynurenine pathway, as well as decreased brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and tryptophan (TRP). The biomarkers identified by us indicate the etiopathogenesis of post-COVID depression analogous to the leading inflammatory hypothesis of MDD.

Abstract
The classification of interleukin-6 (IL-6) as a pro-inflammatory cytokine undervalues the biological impact of this cytokine in health and disease. With broad activities affecting the immune system, tissue homeostasis and metabolic processes, IL-6 displays complex biology. The significance of these involvements has become increasingly important in clinical settings where IL-6 is identified as a prominent target for therapy. Here, clinical experience with IL-6 antagonists emphasises the need to understand the context-dependent properties of IL-6 within an inflammatory environment and the anticipated or unexpected consequences of IL-6 blockade. In this review, we will describe the immunobiology of IL-6 and explore the gamut of IL-6 bioactivity affecting the clinical response to biological drugs targeting this cytokine pathway.

Abstract
Substance use/abuse is one of the main causes of depressive symptoms. Cannabis and synthetic cannabinoids in particular gained significant popularity in the past years. There is an increasing amount of clinical data associating such compounds with the inflammatory component of depression, indicated by the up-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Pro-inflammatory cytokines are also well-known to regulate the enzymes of the kynurenine pathway (KP), which is responsible for metabolizing tryptophan, a precursor in serotonin synthesis. Enhanced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels may over-activate the KP, leading to tryptophan depletion and reduced serotonin levels, which can subsequently precipitate depressive symptoms. Therefore, such mechanism might represent a possible link between the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and the KP in depression, via the inflammatory and dysregulated serotonergic component of the disorder. This review will summarize the data regarding those natural and synthetic cannabinoids that increase pro-inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, the data on such cytokines associated with KP activation will be further reviewed accordingly. The interaction of the ECS and the KP has been postulated and demonstrated in some studies previously. This review will further contribute to this yet less explored connection and propose the KP to be the missing link between cannabinoid-induced inflammation and depressive symptoms.

Breakfast skipping alone and in interaction with inflammatory based quality of diet increases the risk of higher scores of psychological problems profile in a large sample of Iranian adults. Abstract
The authors investigate the association of breakfast skipping and its interaction with a dietary inflammatory index (DII) with the severity of psychological disorders. A total of 2876 Iranian general adults were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Psychological problems profile score was calculated using the regression method in the framework of factor analysis based on depression, anxiety and psychological distress. The higher scores indicate more severity of mental problem. The frequency of breakfast eating in a week was assessed. Dietary intakes were assessed using a food-frequency questionnaire and twenty-seven items were included in the calculation of DII. In the crude model, individuals who ate breakfast seldom had the highest odds for having worse psychological problems profile (OR 3⋅59; 95 % CI 2⋅52, 5⋅11). Adjustment for various confounders did not change the associations (OR 3⋅35; 95 % CI 2⋅11, 5⋅32). In the adjusted multinomial logistic regression model, participants with high DII (>median) who skipped breakfast had highest risk of being in the higher tertiles of psychological problems profile compared with those who had low DII (<median) and ate breakfast (OR 6⋅67; 95 % CI 3⋅45, 12⋅90). Similar results were observed in women and men regarding the impact of breakfast skipping alone and interaction with DII on scores of psychological problems profile. Breakfast skipping is associated with higher risk of psychological problems. Similar findings were obtained in the stratified analysis by sex. Our findings confirmed that the DII and breakfast skipping are associated with mental health, interactionally. Further longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the true link between breakfast skipping and psychological problems.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating psychiatric disease. The dysregulated cytokines in depression are assumed due to the hyperactivation of the immune system. Here we aimed to evaluate the serum interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in MDD. This study recruited 87 MDD patients and 87 age and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs). The increased levels of serum IL-1β and TNF-α were observed among MDD patients. These higher levels of peripheral markers were positively correlated with the severity of depression. Therefore, the elevated levels of serum IL-1β and TNF-α might be used as risk assessment indicators for depression.

Abstract
PURPOSE Prior studies have demonstrated elevated rates of depression in patients with malignant brain tumor; however, the prevalence and effect on surgical outcomes in patients with low-grade gliomas (LGG) and benign brain tumors (BBT) remain unknown. Readmission and non-routine discharge, which includes discharge to skilled nursing, rehabilitative, and other inpatient facilities, are well-established quality of care indicators. We sought to analyze the association between comorbid depression and non-routine discharge, readmission, and other post-operative inpatient outcomes in patients with LGG and BBT. METHODS The Nationwide Readmissions Database from 2010 to 2014 was retrospectively queried to select for surgically treated patients with LGG and BBT. Multivariable logistic regression models adjusting for patient and hospital characteristics were used to determine the effects of comorbid depression on post-operative outcomes. Interaction of gender and depression on non-routine disposition was analyzed. RESULTS We identified 31,654 craniotomies for resection of BBT and LGG (2010-2014). The majority of patients (64.1%) were female. The rate of depression comorbid with BBT and LGG was 11.9%. Depression was associated with non-routine discharge after surgery (OR 1.19, p 0.0002*), but was not associated with increased morbidity, mortality, or readmission at 30 or 90 days. The rate of comorbid depression was higher among female than male patients (14.0 vs. 8.0%). Depression in males was associated with a 38% increased likelihood of non-routine disposition (p = 0.0002*), while depression in females was associated with a 13% increased likelihood of non-routine disposition (p = 0.03*). CONCLUSION Depression is prevalent in patients with LGG and BBT and is associated with increased risk of non-routine discharge following surgical intervention. The increased likelihood of non-routine disposition is greater for males than that for females. Awareness of the risk factors for depression may aid in early screening and intervention and improve overall patient outcomes.

Abstract
A pro-inflammatory diet may have an adverse influence on stress and inflammatory biomarker levels among college students. The dietary inflammatory index (DII®) is a tool used to assess the inflammatory potential of a diet. However, evidence for the association between DII and stress is limited. We examined the association between energy-adjusted DII (E-DIITM), high sensitivity-C-reactive protein [hs-CRP], and stress among female college students. This cross-sectional study included 401 randomly selected female students, aged 19-35 years. Data collection included blood, anthropometric measurements, a healthy-history questionnaire, the perceived stress scale (PSS-10), the Saudi food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and E-DII. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to examine the association between FFQ-derived E-DII score, hs-CRP, and PSS. A higher E-DII score per 1SD (1.8) was associated with a 2.4-times higher PSS score (95% CI: 1.8, 3.1). Higher hs-CRP per 1SD (3.3 mg/L) was associated with a 0.9 (95% CI: 0.7-1.1) times higher PSS score, independent of lifestyle and dietary factors. Our findings indicate that pro-inflammatory diets were highly prevalent among Saudi college students and were associated with higher stress levels. Consideration of the role of stress and focusing on anti-inflammatory foods may be key for healthier dietary habits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have investigated the bidirectional association between psoriasis and depression. The aim of our study was to identify the association between psoriasis and depression. METHODS Data collected by the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment from 2002 to 2013 were used. In study I, psoriasis patients (n = 10,932) were matched 1:4 with control I group participants. In study II, depression patients (n = 60,383) were matched 1:4 with control II group participants. Matching was performed for age, sex, income, and region of residence. The stratified Cox-proportional hazard model was used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) with crude and adjusted models. RESULTS In study I, the adjusted HR for depression was 1.13 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.03-1.24) in the psoriasis group compared to the control I group. In study II, the adjusted HR for depression was 1.11 (95% CI = 1.00-1.22) in the depression group compared to the control II group. In the subgroup analyses, the adjusted HRs for depression were 1.24 (95% CI = 1.00 - 1.53) in females aged < 40 years and 1.31 (95% CI = 1.04 - 1.66) in males aged ≥ 60 years. In the subgroup analyses from study II, the adjusted HRs for psoriasis were 1.56 (95% CI = 1.15 - 2.12) in males aged < 40 years and 1.35 (95% CI = 1.04 - 1.75) in males aged ≥ 60 years. CONCLUSIONS We suggest that psoriasis and depression might have a bidirectional association.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) is higher than that in the general population. However, the mechanisms underlying the increased CHD risk in patients with MDD remain unclear. Inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of MDD and CHD. Therefore, we explored the relationship between inflammatory biomarkers and CHD risk in patients with MDD. METHODS We included 454 patients with acute MDD and 458 controls that matched the sample in age and gender. A readily available complete blood count was used to reflect inflammation, and the risk of CHD was assessed using the Framingham risk score. RESULTS The results showed that patients with MDD showed low-grade inflammation with an elevated platelet (p<0.001) and monocyte count (p<0.001), high platelet/lymphocyte (p=0.003) and monocyte/lymphocyte ratios (p<0.001), and a raised systemic immune-inflammation index (p=0.002). In addition, monocyte count was the only factor significantly associated with CHD risk in patients with MDD (B=7.521, 95% CI: 3.409-11.633, t=3.594, p<0.001). CONCLUSION Collectively, the results of this study support the hypothesis that MDD is systemic inflammation, and suggest that monocyte count predicts the risk of CHD in patients with MDD.

BACKGROUND Sleep disturbances (SD) are the most impactful and commonly reported symptoms in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet, they are often resistant to primary PTSD therapies. Research has identified two distinct SDs highly prevalent in PTSD; insomnia and nightmares. Those who report SDs prior to a traumatic event are at greater risk for developing PTSD; highlighting that sleep potentially plays a role in PTSD's pathology. To further understand the pathobiological mechanisms that lead to the development of PTSD, it is first imperative to understand the interplay which exists between sleep and PTSD on a biological level. The aim of this systematic review is to determine if biological or physiological markers are related to SD in PTSD. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted on the electronic databases; Medline, Embase, AMED and PsycINFO, using Medical Subject Headings and associated keywords. RESULTS Sixteen studies were included in the final analyses. Physiological makers of autonomic function, and biochemical markers of HPA-axis activity; inflammatory processes; and trophic factor regulation were related to the severity of SDs in PTSD. CONCLUSION These findings add to the growing literature base supporting a central focus on sleep in research aiming to define the pathophysiological processes which result in PTSD, as well as emphasising the importance of specifically targeting sleep as part of a successful PTSD intervention strategy. Resolving SDs will not only reduce PTSD symptom severity and improve quality of life but will also reduce all-cause mortality, hospital admissions and lifetime healthcare costs for those with PTSD. Limitations of the current literature are discussed, and key recommendations future research must adhere to are made within.

Abstract
Chronic corticosterone (CORT) stress is an anxiety and depression inducing factor that involves the dysfunction of glucocorticoid receptor (GR), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and neuronal plasticity. However, the regulation of proteomic profiles in neurons suffering CORT stress is remaining elusive. Thus, the proteomic profiles of mouse neuronal C17.2 stem cells were comprehensively investigated by TMT (tandem mass tag)-labeling quantitative proteomics. The quantitative proteomics conjugated gene ontology analysis revealed the inhibitory effect of CORT on the expression of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation-related proteins, which can be antagonized by berberine (BBR) treatment. In addition, animal studies showed that changes in mitochondria by CORT can affect neuropsychiatric activities and disturb the physiological functions of neurons via disordering mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Thus, the mitochondrial energy metabolism can be considered as one of the major mechanism underlying CORT-mediated depression. Since CORT is important for depression after traumatic stress disorder, our study will shed light on the prevention and treatment of depression as well as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Abstract
Introduction Depression comorbid with chronic disease may be mediated by inflammation. We sought to characterize relationships between inflammatory biomarkers and depressive symptoms in patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted by 2 authors up to March 19, 2019, for studies of patients with chronic kidney disease or end-stage kidney disease evaluating circulating inflammatory biomarkers associated with depression of chronic disease: albumin, C-reactive protein (CRP), high-sensitivity CRP, interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-1. Standardized mean differences in biomarkers between individuals with and without depression were computed and analyzed using mixed effects models. Correlations between biomarkers and the severity of depressive symptoms were computed. Results Thirty-four studies (5652 participants) compared biomarkers between depressed and nondepressed individuals. Individuals with depression had lower albumin levels (standardized mean difference, −0.37; 95% confidence interval [CI], −0.61 to −0.13), higher CRP levels (standardized mean difference, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.16–1.37), and higher IL-6 levels (standardized mean difference, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.21–0.63). Studies were heterogeneous for albumin, CRP, high-sensitivity CRP, and tumor necrosis factor-α. Twenty-three studies (3047 participants) investigated correlations between biomarkers and depressive symptoms. The severity of depressive symptoms correlated with albumin (Z = −0.25; 95% CI, −0.36 to −0.14), high-sensitivity CRP (Z = 0.28; 95% CI, 0.13–0.43), and IL-6 (Z = 0.34; 95% CI, 0.18–0.49). There was heterogeneity across studies of IL-6. Only 6 studies (321 participants) investigated the effect of antidepressant treatment on inflammatory biomarkers, which was insufficient to combine in meta-analysis. Conclusion Lower albumin and higher IL-6 were associated with both the presence and severity of depression, CRP with the presence of depression, and high-sensitivity CRP with the severity of depressive symptoms. The effect of interventions to lower inflammation in patients with kidney disease and depression deserves investigation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The studies on the relationship between alcohol consumption, the status of inflammation, and depression have produced conflicting results. In this study, we followed patients with major depressive disorders by monitoring biomarkers of inflammation together with biomarkers of heavy alcohol use. METHOD The levels of IL-6 (interleukin-6), IL-8 (interleukin-8), hs-CRP (high sensitivity C-reactive protein), YKL-40 (also known as Chitinase-3-like protein 1 or CHI3L1), and biomarkers of alcohol consumption and liver status (GT, CDT, ALT, alkaline phosphatase) were measured at baseline and after 6 months of psychiatric treatment from 242 patients suffering from current major depressive disorder (MDD) with (n = 99) or without (n = 143) alcohol use disorder (AUD). RESULTS At baseline, the patients with MDD + AUD showed higher levels of inflammatory biomarkers IL-6 (p < 0.001), hs-CRP (p < 0.01), YKL-40 (p < 0.05), and biomarkers of alcohol consumption, than the corresponding group of non-AUD patients. These differences disappeared during follow-up and recovery from depression. The level of IL-8 decreased significantly in both AUD (p < 0.05) and non-AUD (p < 0.05) patients. During follow-up, the biomarkers of alcohol consumption, GT and CDT, in AUD patients were found to decrease in parallel with serum YKL-40 levels. CONCLUSIONS Alcohol consumption appears to modulate the status of inflammation in depressive patients. A more systematic use of biomarkers of inflammation together with biomarkers of alcohol consumption and liver status may prove to be of value in a more comprehensive assessment and treatment of patients with depression.

Abstract
Increasingly, clinical research has found inflammatory correlates of psychiatric disorders, particularly mood symptomatology. Biological measures may provide greater precision in many cases and may capture clinically-relevant inflammatory signposts, such as central obesity risk, inflammation-associated co-morbid medical conditions, or proinflammatory lifestyle choices. In order to expand understanding of the role of inflammation in mood disorders, we propose a more inclusive clinical model for capturing an inflammatory phenotype of depression by identifying clinically-relevant inflammatory phenotypes grounded in biology. Our model includes chronic conditions and lifestyle behaviors associated with clinically elevated inflammation in mood disorders. Elements of this "inflamed depression" model include: obesity, low HDL concentrations, elevated triglyceride concentrations, chronically elevated blood pressure, clinical diagnosis of hypothyroidism, migraines, rheumatoid arthritis, adult onset diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases, inflammatory skin conditions, and lifestyle factors including smoking cigarettes and chronic stress.
