Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE House dust mite (HDM)-induced allergic rhinitis (AR) is a significant global health issue, leading to considerable illness and disability worldwide. In traditional Chinese medicine, Modified Yupingfeng Nasal Spray (MYN) is believed to support defense systems, and regulate immune defense systems. AIM OF THE STUDY Previous research has shown that both MYN and mometasone furoate nasal spray (MFN) can alleviate symptoms of HDM-induced AR. However, the safety and onset time of MYN compared to MFN for treating HDM-induced AR remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the onset time, safety, and potential mechanisms of MYN and MFN in the treatment of HDM-induced AR. METHODS In a multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel-arm trial, 207 patients with AR who tested positive for HDMs allergens (≥2+) were randomly assigned to receive either MYN or MFN treatment. The primary endpoint was the onset time of AR remission. Additionally, 9 patients were randomly selected from each group to investigate potential mechanisms. RESULTS Compared to MFN (12.05 ± 1.07 days), MYN (21.56 ± 1.92 days) had a slower onset time in controlling AR symptoms. However, there was no significant difference in cumulative remission of AR between MYN and MFN after 77 days of treatment. At the end of the study, no significant difference in disease control rates was observed between MYN (89.00%) and MFN (96.04%) (P > 0.05). MYN treatment significantly increased PTEN mRNA levels in nasal mucosal epithelial cells and serum IL-10, while reducing NF-κΒ and TSLP levels in nasal lavage fluid, as well as serum IL-6 and TNF-α (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Both MYN and MFN effectively reduce AR symptoms; however, MFN acts more quickly than MYN in relieving these symptoms, while MYN is associated with fewer side effects. The therapeutic effects of MYN may be linked to the regulation of the PTEN/NF-κB/TSLP signaling pathway.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to delve into the bidirectional and temporal relationship between depression, allergic rhinitis (AR) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). METHODS A total of 17,028 participants from the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, surveyed in 2016, 2018, and 2020, were included in this study. Participants' medical histories were used to determine their depression, AR and CRS status, as well as the age at diagnosis. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to reveal the associations between AR/CRS and depression. Subgroup analysis was performed considering various clinical characteristics. RESULTS Regardless of occurring independently or coexisting, AR and CRS consistently preceded the diagnosis of depression. The prevalence of depression was higher among patients with AR and CRS, and similarly, the prevalence of AR and CRS was elevated among patients with depression (all P < 0.001). Depression was associated with increased odds of AR (odds ratio [OR], 1.646; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.309-2.071; P < 0.001) and CRS (OR, 1.882; 95% CI, 1.427-2.416; P < 0.001). Similarly, AR (OR, 1.613; 95% CI, 1.278-2.036; P < 0.001) and CRS (OR, 1.869; 95% CI, 1.415-2.467; P < 0.001) were both associated with heightened odds of depression. CONCLUSIONS The study findings indicated a bidirectional and complex association between depression and AR/CRS, emphasizing the importance of early detection and intervention.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) sensitization and allergic rhinitis (AR) symptoms in school-aged children in Japan and to understand the current severity of AR symptoms and the quality of life (QOL) among children with AR. We analyzed data from 8-year-old children who participated in the Yamanashi Adjunct Study of the Japan Environment and Children's Study, focusing on those with complete information on specific IgE levels and AR (1229 for perennial AR [PAR] and 1196 for seasonal AR [SAR]). Sensitization was determined when allergen-specific IgE levels were class 2 (0.70 U/mL) or higher. A total of 656 children (53.4%) were identified as sensitized to house dust mite-specific IgE, comprising 362 (60.6%) boys and 294 (46.5%) girls. For Japanese cedar pollen (JCP)-specific IgE, 820 (68.6%) children were sensitized, with 430 (73.1%) boys and 390 (64.1%) girls. Among children with AR, 40.2% of those with PAR and 78.4% of those with SAR experienced moderate to severe nasal symptoms. This study highlighted the high prevalence of JCP-specific IgE sensitization among school-aged children in Japan and provided insights into the severity of AR symptoms and the impact on QOL in these children.

Abstract
Background Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an inflammatory condition of the nasal mucosa triggered by exposure to non-harmful substances. Over the past decade, the prevalence of AR in Chinese children has been steadily increasing. However, detailed epidemiological data on AR in children from Bayannur City are lacking. Methods This study randomly selected six primary schools in Bayannur City. Electronic questionnaires were distributed via the web, and parents and children completed the questionnaires by scanning the two-dimensional code within a designated timeframe. Statistical analysis was performed on the collected data. Results A total of 4,754 valid responses were obtained. The self-reported prevalence of AR among children in Bayannur city was 39.79%. Multivariate analysis revealed that male gender, belonging to an ethnic minority, a history of food or drug allergies, frequent antibiotic use (≥3 times per year in the past two years, with each course lasting ≥3 days), and residence in urban or pastoral areas was associated with an increased prevalence of AR in children. The proportion of children experiencing moderate to severe AR hat impacted their studies or daily life was 48.78%. Chronic AR was reported in 56.71% of cases. Among AR patients with other allergic conditions, the incidence rates were as follows: bronchial asthma 35.99%, upper airway cough syndrome (UACS) 64.32%, secretory otitis media (SOM) 22.41%, obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea-syndrome (OSAHS) 49.58%, allergic dermatitis (AD) 48.72%, and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) 85.20%. The prevalence of AR was 50.30% in urban areas, 13.733% in rural areas and 20.90% in pastoral areas. Seasonal effects on AR prevalence were notably significant in urban and pastoral regions. Conclusions The prevalence of AR among children in Bayannur city was 39.80%. Of those with AR, 48.72% experienced significant impacts on their learning or daily life, while only 14.80% had no other allergic conditions. There were significant variations in the prevalence and onset of AR among children between urban, agricultural and pastoral areas.

Abstract
Neuropsychiatric symptoms have long been acknowledged as a common comorbidity for individuals with allergic diseases. The proposed mechanisms for this relationship vary by disease and patient population and may include neuroinflammation and/or the consequent social implications of disease symptoms and management. We review connections between mental health and allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, asthma, vocal cord dysfunction, urticaria, and food allergy. Many uncertainties remain and warrant further research, particularly with regard to how medications interact with pathophysiologic mechanisms of allergic disease in the neuroimmune axis. Proactive screening for mental health challenges, using tools such as the Patient Health Questionnaire and Generalized Anxiety Disorder screening instruments among others, can aid clinicians in identifying patients who may need further psychiatric evaluation and support. Although convenient, symptom screening tools are limited by variable sensitivity and specificity and therefore require healthcare professionals to remain vigilant for other mental health "red flags." Ultimately, understanding the connection between allergic disease and mental health empowers clinicians to both anticipate and serve the diverse physical and mental health needs of their patient populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patient-reported outcome measures, while valuable, may not correlate with diagnostic test results. To better understand this potential discrepancy, our objective was to determine whether psychological health is an effect modifier of the association between patient-reported allergy outcome scores and allergy test results. STUDY DESIGN Prospective outcomes study. SETTING Tertiary care hospital and community-based clinic. METHODS This study included 600 patients at least 18 years of age who presented for symptoms related to allergic rhinitis and completed the related sinonasal outcome test (SNOT), which includes validated nasal, allergy, and psychological domains. Stratified analyses of odds ratios and Spearman correlation coefficients were utilized to assess for effect modification by psychological status. RESULTS Worse patient-reported allergic rhinitis symptoms were significantly associated with positive allergy test results (odds ratio [OR] 1.69, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.22-2.34, P = .002) in patients with better psychological health. In contrast, there was no association in patients with worse psychological health (OR 1.06, 95% CI 0.36-3.10, P = .92). These findings were corroborated by assessments of correlation: allergy domain scores were positively correlated with allergy testing scores (Spearman rho 0.18, 95% CI 0.10-0.25, P < .001) in patients with better psychological health, while there was no correlation in patients with worse psychological health (-0.02, 95% CI -0.16-0.12, P = .77). CONCLUSIONS Psychological status was an effect modifier of the association between allergy domain and allergy testing data. When assessing the relationship between subjective measures, such as sinonasal validated instruments, and objective measures, such as allergy test results, accounting for effect modifiers such as psychological state can provide clinical and research-related insights.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between maternal exposure to anxiety during pregnancy and the susceptibility of offspring to eczema and allergic rhinitis and the possibility of sensitivity periods and cumulative effects. METHODS The study's sample consisted of 3160 mother-child pairs from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort Study. Maternal anxiety was repeatedly measured in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy using the Chinese version of the Pregnancy-Related Anxiety Scale. Information regarding children's eczema and allergic rhinitis diagnoses was collected through parental reports at 12, 24, 36 and 48 months of age. Binary logistic regression models were used for statistical analysis and corrected for multiple comparisons using the false discovery rate (FDR) method. RESULTS Children whose mothers experienced anxiety throughout pregnancy had the highest odds of developing total eczema (aOR 1.45, 95% CI 1.02-2.07) and total allergic rhinitis (aOR 1.67, 95% CI 1.17-2.37) between the ages of 6 and 48 months. The higher the trajectory of the maternal anxiety scores throughout pregnancy, the higher the odds of total eczema (aOR 1.65, 95% CI 1.14-2.40) and allergic rhinitis (aOR 1.84, 95% CI 1.28-2.66) in their offspring. The association between maternal anxiety and children's eczema was mainly concentrated in the first 24 months, whereas the association with allergic rhinitis was mainly concentrated in the 36-48 months. CONCLUSION Maternal anxiety during any trimester of pregnancy, especially with a consistently high trajectory of anxiety scores, was associated with higher odds of children's eczema and allergic rhinitis.

Abstract
Our previous research demonstrated that allergic rhinitis could impact behavior and seizure threshold in male mice. However, due to the complex hormonal cycles and hormonal influences on behavior in female mice, male mice are more commonly used for behavioral tests. In this study, we aimed to determine whether these findings were replicable in female mice and to explore the potential involvement of sexual hormones in regulating neuroinflammation in an allergic model. Our results indicate that pain threshold was decreased in female mice with allergic rhinitis and the levels of IL-23/IL-17A/IL-17R were increased in their Dorsal root ganglia. However, unlike males, female mice with AR did not display neuropsychological symptoms such as learning and memory deficits, depression, and anxiety-like behavior. This was along with decreased levels of DNA methyl transferase 1 (DNMT1) and inflammatory cytokines in their hippocampus. Ovariectomized mice were used to mitigate hormonal effects, and the results showed that they had behavioral changes and neuroinflammation in their hippocampus similar to male mice, as well as increased levels of DNMT1. These findings demonstrate sex differences in how allergic rhinitis affects behavior, pain sensitivity, and seizure thresholds. Furthermore, our data suggest that DNMT1 may be influenced by sexual hormones, which could play a role in modulating inflammation in allergic conditions.

Abstract
Climate-health literacy is the ability to find, access, understand, interpret, evaluate, and communicate information about the impact of climate change on human health and to make decisions and act accordingly to that information. Climate change affects people's health in numerous ways, both directly and indirectly, e.g., by increasing the risks of cardiovascular disease, infections, depression, anxiety disorders, and trauma. It is important for health professionals to understand the complex interaction between climate change and health. A teaching concept is presented that incorporates the core elements of climate-health literacy. On a first level, physical and climatological basics are taught, direct and indirect impacts of climate change on human health, climate protective measures, the psychological background of climate-protective behavior, and professional ethics. Furthermore, via self-awareness and self-reflection, the impact of climate change on the student's mental health should be evaluated. In an advanced level, the direct and indirect impacts of climate change on mental health are taught, coping strategies, resilience, and vulnerability, as well as the role of health-care professionals in the climate crisis. In expert-level lectures, the knowledge can be deepened, and special content like activist burnout can be addressed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the additional risk of suicide-related behaviors in adolescents with allergic rhinitis (AR), it is important to use the growing field of machine learning (ML) to evaluate this risk. OBJECTIVE This study aims to evaluate the validity and usefulness of an ML model for predicting suicide risk in patients with AR. METHODS We used data from 2 independent survey studies, Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS; n=299,468) for the original data set and Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES; n=833) for the external validation data set, to predict suicide risks of AR in adolescents aged 13 to 18 years, with 3.45% (10,341/299,468) and 1.4% (12/833) of the patients attempting suicide in the KYRBS and KNHANES studies, respectively. The outcome of interest was the suicide attempt risks. We selected various ML-based models with hyperparameter tuning in the discovery and performed an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) analysis in the train, test, and external validation data. RESULTS The study data set included 299,468 (KYRBS; original data set) and 833 (KNHANES; external validation data set) patients with AR recruited between 2005 and 2022. The best-performing ML model was the random forest model with a mean AUROC of 84.12% (95% CI 83.98%-84.27%) in the original data set. Applying this result to the external validation data set revealed the best performance among the models, with an AUROC of 89.87% (sensitivity 83.33%, specificity 82.58%, accuracy 82.59%, and balanced accuracy 82.96%). While looking at feature importance, the 5 most important features in predicting suicide attempts in adolescent patients with AR are depression, stress status, academic achievement, age, and alcohol consumption. CONCLUSIONS This study emphasizes the potential of ML models in predicting suicide risks in patients with AR, encouraging further application of these models in other conditions to enhance adolescent health and decrease suicide rates.

Abstract
Allergic and immunologic conditions, including asthma, food allergy, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis, are among the most common chronic conditions in children and adolescents that often last into adulthood. Although rare, inborn errors of immunity are life-altering and potentially fatal if unrecognized or untreated. Thus, allergic and immunologic conditions are both medical and public health issues that are profoundly affected by socioeconomic factors. Recently, studies have highlighted societal issues to evaluate factors at multiple levels that contribute to health inequities and the potential steps toward closing those gaps. Socioeconomic disparities can influence all aspects of care, including health care access and quality, diagnosis, management, education, and disease prevalence and outcomes. Ongoing research, engagement, and deliberate investment of resources by relevant stakeholders and advocacy approaches are needed to identify and address the impact of socioeconomics on health care disparities and outcomes among patients with allergic and immunologic diseases.

Abstract
Evidences showed the link between allergy and depression, while the relationships of depression with allergy-related outcomes is insufficient. The objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the relationship of depression with allergy-related outcomes assessed using two different outcome indicators, in a population-based study. A cross-sectional study was performed of 1094 participants in the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The self-reported allergic symptoms of allergic rhinitis (AR) status and immunoglobulin E (IgE) were used to evaluate the allergy-related outcomes. The depression disorder was defined as the ≥ 10 points on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Logistic and linear regression models were performed to illustrate the associations of depression and allergy-related outcomes. The prevalence of AR and depression was 34.2% and 6.8%, respectively. The odds of depression were 8.6% higher in participants with AR patients compared those without AR [odds ratio (OR) = 1.739, 95% confidence interval (CI): (1.034, 2.933)], while the odds of depression in participants with allergic sensitization and without allergic sensitization were not found significant difference. Allergy is positively associated with depression disorder, and patients with allergy-related outcomes, such as AR, may be at higher risk of depression, while the IgE level was not founded to be related with depression. In the treatment of AR patients with depression symptoms, early detection and management of mental problems are of importance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Observational studies suggested that obesity may promote the development of allergic rhinitis. The aim of this study was to explore the association of obesity, lipids and adipokines with this allergic disease at the genetic level using Mendelian randomization strategies. METHODS Summary data for three obesity indicators (such as body mass index), eight lipid indicators (such as triglycerides) and six adipokines (such as interleukin-6 and adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein) were collected, and suitable instrumental variables were extracted from these summary data according to the three main assumptions of Mendelian randomization. Three Mendelian randomization methods (such as inverse variance weighted) were used to detect the casual effect of the above indicators on allergic rhinitis risk. Sensitivity analyses were performed to assess heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy. RESULTS After Bonferroni correction, the inverse variance weighted reported that elevated levels of interleukin-6 and adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein were nominally associated with the decreased risk of allergic rhinitis (OR = 0.870, 95% CI 0.765-0.990, p = 0.035; OR = 0.732, 95% CI 0.551-0.973, p = 0.032). The other Mendelian randomization methods supported these results. Obesity, lipids and other adipokines were not related to this allergic disease. Sensitivity analyses found no heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy in the study. CONCLUSION The study provided some interesting, but not sufficient, evidence to suggest that interleukin-6 and adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein might play a protective role in the development of allergic rhinitis at the genetic level. These findings should be validated by more research. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE This was a Mendelian randomized study with a level of evidence second only to clinical randomized trials, and higher than cohort and case-control studies.

Abstract
Introduction Allergic rhinitis is one of the most common diseases in the world. It affects all people irrespective of age, sex and race. Allergic rhinitis leads to the development of social and interpersonal problems and loss of productivity which in turn causes depression. The depression was an underestimated iceberg phenomenon in allergic rhinitis patients. Objective The study evaluates the association between the severity of allergic rhinitis and the level of depression in patients attending tertiary care hospitals in south India. Methodology This cross-sectional study was conducted among 250 patients with allergic rhinitis. All the patients were subjected to the semi-structured questionnaire. And the severity of allergic rhinitis has been made based on the allergic rhinitis, and its impact on asthma classification and depression has been diagnosed and classified based on the Hamilton depression rating scale. And the association between allergic rhinitis and depression has been evaluated with the chi-square test. Results Two hundred fifty patients participated in the study, with a mean age of 33+/-2. Surprisingly the prevalence of depression among the allergic rhinitis patient was 88%. Most of them suffered from mild depression based on the Hamilton depression rating scale. A significant association was seen among allergic patients with age, gender, smoking status, locality, socioeconomic status, and co-morbidities. And the study shows the severity of allergic rhinitis is directly related to the severity of depression with a significant association. Conclusion Depression is one of the underestimated and under-treated problems in today's world. This study concludes that the severity of allergic rhinitis directly and significantly correlates with the severity of depression. The prevalence and intensity of depression should be evaluated and appropriately treated in patients with allergic rhinitis to improve the quality of life.

Abstract
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a widely studied ligand-activated cytosolic transcriptional factor that has been associated with the initiation and progression of various diseases, including autoimmune diseases, cancers, metabolic syndromes, and allergies. Generally, AhR responds and binds to environmental toxins/ligands, dietary ligands, and allergens to regulate toxicological, biological, cellular responses. In a canonical signaling manner, activation of AhR is responsible for the increase in cytochrome P450 enzymes which help individuals to degrade and metabolize these environmental toxins and ligands. However, canonical signaling cannot be applied to all the effects mediated by AhR. Recent findings indicate that activation of AhR signaling also interacts with some non-canonical factors like Kruppel-like-factor-6 (KLF6) or estrogen-receptor-alpha (Erα) to affect the expression of downstream genes. Meanwhile, enormous research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of AhR signaling on innate and adaptive immunity. It has been shown that AhR exerts numerous effects on mast cells, B cells, macrophages, antigen-presenting cells (APCs), Th1/Th2 cell balance, Th17, and regulatory T cells, thus, playing a significant role in allergens-induced diseases. This review discussed how AhR mediates immune responses in allergic diseases. Meanwhile, we believe that understanding the role of AhR in immune responses will enhance our knowledge of AhR-mediated immune regulation in allergic diseases. Also, it will help researchers to understand the role of AhR in regulating immune responses in autoimmune diseases, cancers, metabolic syndromes, and infectious diseases.

Abstract
Allergic rhinitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of nasal mucosa caused by the presence of IgE after exposure to allergens, characterized by nasal irritation, hypersecretion of the nasal passages and sneezing, which frequently occurs in children and adolescents. There has been an increase in allergic rhinitis over the past few years due to air pollution. Exosomes have been discovered to be nano-sized vesicles, which contain a wide range of substances, including proteins and nucleic acids, numerous studies indicates that exosomes play a vital role in cells communication. Recently there have been more and more studies exploring the role of exosomes in allergic rhinitis. Therefore, here we will present a comprehensive review of the research on exosomes and their role in allergic rhinitis for the purpose of providing new understanding of potential value of exosomes applied to the treatment of allergic rhinitis.

Abstract
Identifying patients with high risk of suicide is critical for suicide prevention. We examined lab tests together with medication use and diagnosis from electronic medical records (EMR) data for prediction of suicide-related events (SREs; suicidal ideations, attempts and deaths) in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients, a population with a high risk of suicide. We developed DeepBiomarker, a deep-learning model through augmenting the data, including lab tests, and integrating contribution analysis for key factor identification. We applied DeepBiomarker to analyze EMR data of 38,807 PTSD patients from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Our model predicted whether a patient would have an SRE within the following 3 months with an area under curve score of 0.930. Through contribution analysis, we identified important lab tests for suicide prediction. These identified factors imply that the regulation of the immune system, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, and gut microbiome were involved in shaping the pathophysiological pathways promoting depression and suicidal risks in PTSD patients. Our results showed that abnormal lab tests combined with medication use and diagnosis could facilitate predicting SRE risk. Moreover, this may imply beneficial effects for suicide prevention by treating comorbidities associated with these biomarkers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies reported that abnormal behavior was noted in pediatric patients receiving several drugs, including neuraminidase inhibitors (NIs). However, the information on drugs associated with abnormal behavior in a real-world setting remains limited. The purpose of this study was to clarify the drugs associated with abnormal behavior using a spontaneous reporting system database. METHODS We performed a retrospective pharmacovigilance disproportionality analysis using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database. Adverse event reports submitted to the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency were analyzed, and the reporting odds ratio at 95% confidence interval were calculated. RESULTS A total of 1,144 reports of abnormal behavior were identified. The signals were detected through the association of 4 neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir, zanamivir, laninamivir, and peramivir) with the abnormal behaviour. These signals were stronger for oseltamivir than other neuraminidase inhibitors. The signals were also detected for acetaminophen and montelukast. CONCLUSION Our results should be able to raise physicians' awareness of drugs associated with abnormal behavior, but further investigation of these medications is warranted.

Abstract
Purpose This study investigated mental health status and quality of life in allergic disease patients compared with non-allergic controls. Methods This study used nationwide, population-based, cross-sectional data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2016 to 2018. The propensity matching score was used to balance age and sex distributions between the allergic disease groups and corresponding controls. Atopic dermatitis (n = 446) and asthma (n = 483) groups were compared with controls in a 1:10 ratio, and the allergic rhinitis (n = 2,357) group was compared with controls in a 1:2 ratio. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the odds ratios (ORs) for mental health status and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) based on the presence of allergic diseases. Results The ORs for severe psychological stress, psychological consultation and diagnosis of depression were more significantly increased in the asthma (OR, 1.41, 1.83, and 2.1, respectively) and allergic rhinitis groups (OR, 1.35, 1.48, and 1.83, respectively) compared with non-allergic controls after adjustment for confounding factors. The rate of severe problems in mobility was more significantly increased in the asthma group compared to controls. Conclusions The results show that efforts should be made to manage psychological problems and improve HRQoL in patients with atopic dermatitis, asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atopic diseases are characterized by dysregulated inflammatory response, which may incur the onset of peripartum mental disorders, but the impact remains unknown. This study examined whether and to what extent the history of atopic diseases is associated with newly onset peripartum mental disorders. METHODS Using population-based registries, we identified all primiparous women who gave birth to live singletons in Denmark during 1978-2016 (n = 937,422). The exposure was hospital contact due to the three major types of atopic diseases-asthma, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis-before conception. The primary outcome was any hospital contact for mental disorder during pregnancy and 1-year postpartum, which was further classified into affective disorders, neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders, and substance abuse. The follow-up started from the date of conception and ended at the date of the first diagnosis of mental disorders, 1-year postpartum, death, emigration, or December 31, 2016, whichever came first. Cox regression was used, adjusted for calendar year, age at childbirth, education, residence, and Charlson comorbidity index. RESULTS A total of 24,016 (2.6%) women received diagnosis of at least one of the three atopic diseases before conception (asthma, 1.7%; atopic dermatitis, 0.6%; and allergic rhinitis, 0.8%). Exposure to asthma, atopic dermatitis, or allergic rhinitis was associated with a 37% increased overall risk of peripartum mental disorders (hazard ratio [HR], 1.37; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.27-1.49). Higher risks were observed among women with more frequent hospital contacts for atopic disease (HR, 1.80; 95% CI, 1.37-2.35; ≥5 times), and with recent hospital contacts for atopic disease (HR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.48-2.06; within 2 years before conception). Specific associations were observed between asthma and neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders (HR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.21-1.62), and between atopic dermatitis and substance abuse (HR, 1.62; 95% CI, 1.12-2.34). CONCLUSIONS History of asthma, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis before conception was associated with increased risks of peripartum mental disorders. Women who have atopic diseases before pregnancy may benefit from systematic mental health monitoring.

Abstract
Background Up to now, epidemiological studies on allergy rhinitis (AR) have primarily focused on determining the risk of disease in Chinese adults, with the majority of them designed by single centers, while cross-sectional and epidemiological data describing allergic sensitization in children with self-reported AR are scarce. Objective This study was estimating of the latest information about the sensitization patterns and risk factors of clinical AR to develop effective strategies for the prevention and treatment of AR. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey between January 2020 and June 2021 involving children from seven cities in China who reported AR. A total of 762 children participated in this survey. To evaluate the risk factors and specific sensitization patterns of clinical AR through questionnaires and specific immunoglobulin E to 11 aeroallergens. Results Of the 762 patients, 593 (77.8%) had at least one positive IgE level. Aged 7–14 years (OR 1.503, (95% CI 1.058–2.136), P = 0.023); With allergic conjunctivitis (OR 1.843, (95% CI 1.297–2.620), P = 0.001) and living in the Eastern (OR 1.802, (95% CI 1.263–2.573), P = 0.001) all elevated the risk of clinical AR associated with aeroallergens. The sensitization rates of D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae were higher than those of other allergens in the 0–6 and 7–14 years old age groups. The most common aeroallergens among self-reported children with AR in the eastern were D. farinae (74.9%) and D. pteronyssinus (74.3%), while in the western were mugwort (60.0%) and marguerite (56.6%). Majority of sIgE-positive subjects were sensitized to three or more of the tested pollen allergens in the Western (52.1%), compared with 5.7% in the Eastern. Conclusion There was an apparent geographic variation in childhood allergies in China. Age factors also had strong impacts on the allergen sensitization rate of children, but these impacts differed across regions.

Abstract
Objective – Psychiatric hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits are costly, stigmatizing, and often ineffective. Given the immune and kynurenine activation in bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia, as well as the immune-modulatory effects of statins, we aimed to compare the relative risk (RRs) of psychiatric hospitalizations and ED visits between individuals prescribed lipophilic vs. hydrophilic statins vs. no statins. We hypothesized (a) reduced rates of hospitalization and ER utilization with statins versus no statins and (b) differences in outcomes between statins, as lipophilia increases the capability to penetrate the blood–brain barrier with potentially beneficial neuroimmune, antioxidant, neuroprotective, neurotrophic, and endothelial stabilizing effects, and, in contrast, potentially detrimental decreases in brain cholesterol concentrations leading to serotoninergic dysfunction, changes in membrane lipid composition, thus affecting ion channels and receptors. Methods – We used VA service utilization data from October 1, 2010 to September 30, 2015. The RRs for psychiatric hospitalization and ED visits, were estimated using robust Poisson regression analyses. The number of individuals analyzed was 683,129. Results – Individuals with schizophrenia and BD who received prescriptions for either lipophilic or hydrophilic statins had a lower RR of psychiatric hospitalization or ED visits relative to nonstatin controls. Hydrophilic statins were significantly associated with lower RRs of psychiatric hospitalization but not of ED visits, compared to lipophilic statins. Conclusion – The reduction in psychiatric hospitalizations in statin users (vs. nonusers) should be interpreted cautiously, as it carries a high risk of confounding by indication. While the lower RR of psychiatric hospitalizations in hydrophilic statins relative to the lipophilic statins is relatively bias free, the finding bears replication in a specifically designed study. If replicated, important clinical implications for personalizing statin treatment in patients with mental illness, investigating add-on statins for improved therapeutic control, and mechanistic exploration for identifying new treatment targets are natural next steps.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Allergic rhinitis (AR) is associated with increased risk of major depression in the general population, however, no previous study has evaluated its role among pregnant women. We aimed to investigate the potential impact of AR during pregnancy on the development of postpartum depression (PPD). METHODS This is a population-based case-control study. Data were retrieved from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Medical records of a total of 199 470 deliveries during 2000 and 2010 were identified. Among which, 1416 women with PPD within 12 months after delivery were classified as the case group, while 198 054 women without PPD after delivery formed the control group. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were conducted to determine the associations between AR during pregnancies and other study variables with PPD. RESULTS AR during pregnancy was found in 9.53% women who developed PPD and 5.44% in women without PPD. After adjusting for age at delivery, income level, various pregnancy and delivery-related conditions, asthma, atopic dermatitis and other medical comorbidities in the multivariate analysis, AR was significantly associated with increased odds of PPD (aOR: 1.498, 95% CI: 1.222-1.836). CONCLUSION AR during pregnancy was independently and significantly associated with an approximately 50% increased risk of PPD among women giving birth. Closely monitoring of AR is warranted in the future in order to optimize mother and child outcomes after delivery.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Sleep problems are common in allergic rhinitis (AR) and are a modifiable risk factor for suicidal ideation. However, the effect of sleep duration and weekend catch-up sleep (WCUS)-sleep time on weekends that exceeds sleep time on weekdays-on suicidal ideation for adolescents with AR is unknown. The objective of this study was to explore whether sleep duration and WCUS have an impact on suicidal ideation among adolescents with AR. METHODS From the annual Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Surveys (completed from 2013-2017), data were obtained from a stratified, multistage, clustered sample. Using self-reported questionnaires, students provided doctor-diagnosed AR and sleep time. RESULTS Among 134,417 and 262,653 adolescents with and without AR, respectively, those with AR compared with those without AR had more sleep dissatisfaction (46.6% vs 40.8%), slept less (sleep duration: 6.71 ± 1.37 hours vs 7.01 ± 1.48 hours), and had longer WCUS (3.46 ± 0.11 hours vs 2.11 ± 0.14 hours). After adjustment, the odds ratio of patients with sleep dissatisfaction was a 1.22 (95% confidence interval, 1.17-1.28) times higher risk of suicidal ideation than in those with sleep satisfaction. For average sleep duration (defining 7-8 hours as the reference), the odds ratio of short sleep (≤ 5 hours) was 1.45 (95% confidence interval, 1.32-1.53). Notably, long WCUS (≥ 2 hours) was significantly associated with decreased suicidal ideation (odds ratio, 0.85; 95% confidence interval, 0.81-0.92). CONCLUSIONS Although further research is needed to clarify this association, under the condition of sleep deprivation, WCUS at a certain extent may be associated with a low risk for suicidal ideation in adolescents with AR. Abstract
BACKGROUND On March 2020, World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 to be a pandemic disease. Interactions between allergy-related inflammatory and psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been documented. Therefore, those who have pre-existing allergic conditions may have an increased psychiatric reaction to the stresses of the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE Identify the psychological impact of COVID-19 in patients with allergic diseases and determine if these individuals have a greater risk of presenting with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS It is a cross-sectional, survey-based study designed to assess the degree of symptoms of depression and the risk of PTSD using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), respectively, in allergic patients. RESULTS A total of 4106 surveys were evaluated; 1656 (40.3%) were patients with allergic disease, and 2450 (59.7%) were non-allergic (control) individuals. Of those with allergies, 76.6% had respiratory allergic disease including asthma and allergic rhinitis. Individuals with allergic disease reported higher scores regarding symptoms of PTSD on the IES-R scale (p = 0.052, OR 1.24 CI 0.99-1.55) as well as a higher depression risk score in the PHQ-9 questionnaire (mean 6.82 vs. 5.28) p = 0.000 z = -8.76.The allergy group presented a higher score in the IES-R questionnaire (mean 25.42 vs. 20.59), being more susceptible to presenting PTSD (p = 0.000, z = -7.774).The individuals with allergic conditions were further divided into subgroups of those with respiratory allergies such as allergic rhinitis and asthma vs those with non-respiratory allergies such as drug and food allergy, urticaria and atopic dermatitis. This subgroup analysis compares respiratory versus non-respiratory allergic patients, with similar results on the IES-R (mean 25.87 vs 23.9) p = 0.0124, z = -1.539. There was no significant difference on intrusion (p = 0.061, z = -1.873) and avoidance (p = 0.767, z = -0.297), but in the hyperarousal subscale, patients with respiratory allergy had higher scores (mean 1.15 vs. 0.99) p = 0.013 z = -2.486. CONCLUSIONS Psychological consequences such as depression and reported PTSD are present during the COVID-19 pandemic causing an impact particularly in individuals with allergic diseases. If we acknowledge the impact and how it is affecting our patients, we are able to implement interventions, follow up, and contribute to their overall well-being.

Abstract
Allergic rhinitis (AR) and diabetes mellitus (DM) share a common cause in inflammation; however, potential relationships between them are not clear. Therefore, we aimed to explore the associations between AR and DM. In this cross-sectional study, data were extracted from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2018 and weighted based on sociodemographic characters. AR and DM were defined by diagnoses thereof. Since self-reporting was not perfect, in order to complement the validity, we additionally performed sensitivity analysis by defining DM according to HbA1c and medication history. After excluding invalid data, the number of final participants was 29,246 (mean age, 54.95 ± 14.27 years). We calculated the odds ratio (OR) of newly self-reported DM among AR patients without DM history by multivariable logistic regression adjusted for potential confounders. A reverse association was also assessed. Patients with AR showed lower ORs for DM than those without AR (OR, 95% CI: men, 0.28, 0.19–0.42; women, 0.33, 0.24–0.46). Similarly, DM patients showed lower ORs for AR than patients without DM (men, 0.41, 0.31–0.56; women, 0.34, 0.25–0.46). The same results were obtained in sensitivity analysis defining DM according to HbA1c levels or DM treatment and in stratification analysis for age, residency, comorbidity, BMI, and menopause. In conclusion, we discovered that AR and DM show mutual inverse associations, regardless of sex, in individuals aged 30 years and older.

Abstract
Although younger patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) have been successfully treated with pharmacotherapy, there are no definitive data on treatment outcomes in older patients with AR. We performed a prospective study of 51 older adults with AR (aged over 65 years) and 101 younger AR patients (aged from 19 to 40 years) to compare clinical outcomes between the 2 groups and to evaluate the impact of depressed mood on treatment outcomes in older AR patients. Changes in total symptom scores (TSS), rhinitis-specific quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) results, rhinitis control assessment test (RCAT) results and visual analog scale (VAS) scores were evaluated after 4-week treatment according to the Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guideline, and the severity of depressed mood was assessed by using the geriatric depression scale. After 4-week treatment, younger AR patients had greater improvements in clinical scores compared with older adults; differences in least squares mean changes from baseline in older patients vs. younger patients were 1.71 (P = 0.004) for TSS, 10.84 (P < 0.001) for RQLQ, 0.80 (P = 0.275) for RCAT, and 8.60 for VAS score (P = 0.061). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the severity of depressed mood was independently associated with severe chronic upper airway disease (adjusted odds ratio, 1.385; P = 0.004). Our results suggest that older AR patients are less responsive to standard treatment compared with younger AR patients and that depressed mood is strongly associated with the increased risk of uncontrolled AR in older AR patients.

Abstract
Within the general literature on infections and suicidal behavior, studies on Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) occupy a central position. This is related to the parasite's neurotropism, high prevalence of chronic infection, as well as specific and non-specific behavioral alterations in rodents that lead to increased risk taking, which are recapitulated in humans by T. gondii's associations with suicidal behavior, as well as trait impulsivity and aggression, mental illness and traffic accidents. This paper is a detailed review of the associations between T. gondii serology and suicidal behavior, a field of study that started 15 years ago with our publication of associations between T. gondii IgG serology and suicidal behavior in persons with mood disorders. This "legacy" article presents, chronologically, our primary studies in individuals with mood disorders and schizophrenia in Germany, recent attempters in Sweden, and in a large cohort of mothers in Denmark. Then, it reviews findings from all three meta-analyses published to date, confirming our reported associations and overall consistent in effect size [ranging between 39 and 57% elevation of odds of suicide attempt in T. gondii immunoglobulin (IgG) positives]. Finally, the article introduces certain links between T. gondii and biomarkers previously associated with suicidal behavior (kynurenines, phenylalanine/tyrosine), intermediate phenotypes of suicidal behavior (impulsivity, aggression) and state-dependent suicide risk factors (hopelessness/dysphoria, sleep impairment). In sum, an abundance of evidence supports a positive link between suicide attempts (but not suicidal ideation) and T. gondii IgG (but not IgM) seropositivity and serointensity. Trait impulsivity and aggression, endophenotypes of suicidal behavior have also been positively associated with T. gondii seropositivity in both the psychiatrically healthy as well as in patients with Intermittent Explosive Disorder. Yet, causality has not been demonstrated. Thus, randomized interventional studies are necessary to advance causal inferences and, if causality is confirmed, to provide hope that an etiological treatment for a distinct subgroup of individuals at an increased risk for suicide could emerge.

Abstract
This article examines the effects of fermented milk (FM) containing Lactobacillus helveticus SBT2171 (LH2171) on the subjective symptoms of individuals with mild and moderate perennial allergy. Two hundred subjects were divided into two groups and consumed FM containing LH2171 or placebo FM once per day for 16 weeks. The primary endpoints were defined as per the degree of nasal and ocular symptoms and difficulty in daily life as determined by the Japanese guidelines for allergy rhinitis and the Japanese allergic rhinitis standard quality of life questionnaire, respectively. The secondary endpoints included parameters related to allergic symptoms in the blood and nasal fluids, as well as the mental status. The severity of allergic rhinitis significantly improved in the LH2171 group compared to that in the placebo group. Additionally, the LH2171 group showed a significantly lower degree of "stuffy nose" (as per the diary survey) than the placebo group. Eosinophil counts in the nasal fluids and in the blood were significantly lower in the LH2171 group compared to the placebo group. Thus, the oral administration of FM containing LH2171 cells alleviated perennial allergic rhinitis in individuals with mild and moderate symptoms, possibly via suppression of eosinophils in both the blood and nasal fluids.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We assessed associated factors for depression and suicidality among adolescents with allergic rhinitis (AR) by analyzing data from annual Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Surveys (KYRBSs) completed from 2007 to 2017. METHODS Data from the KYRBS were obtained from a stratified, multistage, clustered sample. Using self-reported questionnaires, students provided yes-or-no answers to questions addressing their doctor-diagnosed AR and self-experienced depression, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Associated factors for depression and suicidality were identified by logistic regression models after controlling for potential confounding factors. A total of 818,684 adolescents were targeted, and 788,411 adolescents completed the survey. RESULTS An AR diagnosis was reported in 30.8% of respondents. Among respondents with AR, 34.5%, 18.4%, and 4.2% reported depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts, respectively. Adolescents with AR were significantly more likely to have negative mental health status, including suicidality than adolescents without AR. After multiple logistic regression analyses, perception of stress was most strongly associated with depression and suicidal ideation (adjusted odds ratio: 5.16 [95% confidence interval; 5.04-5.28], 4.81 [4.65-4.98], respectively). For suicide attempts, subjective unhappiness was most strongly associated (3.63 [3.47-3.79]) among adolescents with AR. Presence of AR itself was also associated with depression and suicidality (1.10 [1.08-1.11], 1.08 [1.06-1.10], 1.05 [1.01-1.08], respectively). CONCLUSION Adolescents with AR had significantly greater prevalence of depression and suicidality. Multidisciplinary team approaches, including psychological support, may be needed to prevent suicide among adolescents with AR, especially those with identifiable risk factors.

Abstract
Introduction: Suicide is one of the most frequent causes of death. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), each year, over eight hundred thousand people worldwide die as a result of suicide. The most common risk factors for suicide are depressive disorders and alcohol dependence. Alcohol can directly influence a decision about suicide, or be a factor facilitating this decision. The aim of the study was to analyse the seasonality of suicides among persons under the influence of alcohol. Material and Methods: Data for analysis were obtained from the Department of Forensic Medicine (DFM) of the Medical University of Warsaw. A retrospective analysis was performed on 317 victims of suicides by hanging, those which were entered into the registry of deaths kept by the DFM in the years 2009–2013. The analysis took into account the age and sex of victims, initial cause of death, date of post-mortem examination, autopsy result and alcohol concentration in the blood or muscles of the victims. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 20. Results: In the analysis, a spring peak of suicides was found for men, and an autumn peak was revealed for women. In addition, a significant correlation was observed between the age of victims and the concentration of alcohol; the older the victims, the higher the alcohol concentration. However, this correlation was reported only in the spring months. Conclusions: The results of the analysis seem to be consistent with seasonal patterns observed in other studies, and they indicate the occurrence of suicide seasonality. In order to improve the strategies of suicide prevention, it is necessary to identify factors which are related to the seasonal variation of suicidal behaviours, as well as to gain knowledge about the mechanisms behind this phenomenon.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although many studies have highlighted the link between asthma/rhinitis and depression, it is still unclear which characteristics of these diseases are associated with the risk of depression. We aimed to explore the relationship between depression and asthma or rhinitis in a representative sample of the Italian general population. METHODS The data were collected in GEIRD, an Italian multicenter, population-based, multicase-control study. 2227 participants (age 21-86 years, female 50%) underwent standardized interviews, skin prick and lung function tests, and were divided into cases of current asthma (n = 528), rhinitis without asthma (n = 972), and controls (n = 727). Two specific questions from the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) were asked to identify symptoms of depressed mood and anhedonia, which were used as a proxy of major depression disorder. RESULTS The prevalence of depression was 16.7%, 11.9%, and 5.1% in subjects with asthma, rhinitis and controls, respectively. Both in asthma and rhinitis, subjects with depression had worse respiratory-health related quality of life and more frequent disease-related symptoms than their non-depressed counterparts. In asthma, depression was associated with poorer disease control. In rhinitis, depression was significantly associated with a disease-related limitations in daily activities and greater risk of symptom exacerbations and prescriptions of medicines for breathing. Cases of rhinitis with depression were less likely to be atopic. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that rhinitis exacerbations, particularly in non-atopic subjects, and low asthma control are strongly related to the presence of depressed mood in adults from the general population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the depressive and anxiety levels in allergic rhinitis (AR) and to investigate the relationship between depression and anxiety symptoms and depressive and anxious temperament features. Methods: The study design is cross-sectional. The study was conducted between January 2017 and January 2018. Patients (n=101) diagnosed with AR and healthy controls (n=74) were included in this study. All participants were assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and TEMPS-A (Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, San Diego Autoquestionaire). Results: The median BAI and BDI scores of the patients were found to be significantly higher than the control group (p=0.016 and p=0.001). In AR patients, the percentage of depressive and anxious temperaments were significantly higher than in the control group (p=0.029). Depressive temperament scores showed strong positive correlation with anxious temperament and BDI scores and a medium relationship with the BAI (r; p=0.639; p less than 0.001, p=0.671; p less than 0.001, and p=0.495; p less than 0.001, respectively). Participants with anxious temperament had 6.3-times (95% CI: 1.3-28.3) the risk for developing AR. Conclusion: Screening of temperament traits in AR patients may allow prediction of future depression and anxiety symptoms. These temperament traits may be mediators of depression and anxiety in AR patients. Depressive and anxious temperament traits may contribute to both depression and allergy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Adolescent asthma can be the cause of social and psychological problems. We investigated the association between asthma with other allergic diseases and suicidal risk behavior among South Korean adolescents using nationally representative data. METHODS Web-based self-report data from the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey were used in this study (N = 237,022). Complex sample logistic regression was used to define the relationship between suicidal behavior and asthma (n = 7177), with other allergic diseases [asthma with allergic rhinitis (AR) or asthma with atopic dermatitis (AD) (n = 9720), asthma with AD and AR (n = 4971)]. RESULTS Participants with asthma and other allergies showed a higher prevalence of substance use, greater sexual experience, greater perceived stress, poorer perceived health, more severe depression, more suicidal ideation, and more suicide attempts than those without allergy. Depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts increased trend in the following order: no asthma, asthma only, asthma with one other allergy (asthma with AD or asthma with AR), and asthma with AD and AR. After adjusting for multiple confounders, the odds ratio for suicidal ideation with asthma and AD and AR was 1.13 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.06-1.19] and that for suicide attempts was 1.31 (95% CI, 1.20-1.43). CONCLUSIONS Adolescent asthma and other allergies were associated with suicidal behavior.

Abstract
The effect of students' psychosocial problems on their reporting of indoor air quality (subjective IAQ) and indoor air-related (IA-related) symptoms has not been studied in schools in a longitudinal setting. Therefore, we analyzed whether changes in students' psychosocial problems (socioemotional difficulties and perceived teacher⁻student relations) between the beginning of seventh grade (age 12⁻13 years) and the end of ninth grade (15⁻16 years) predicted subjective IAQ and IA-related symptoms at the end of ninth grade. In order to explore the independent effect of psychosocial factors, we focused only on students in schools without observed indoor air problems. The analysis was of longitudinal data (N = 986 students) using latent change modelling. Increased socioemotional difficulties were related to more IA-related symptoms (standardized beta = 0.20) and deteriorated subjective IAQ (standardized beta = 0.20). Increased problems in teacher⁻student relations were related to deteriorated subjective IAQ (standardized beta = 0.21). Although students' psychosocial problems explained only 9⁻13% of the total variances, our findings support the notion that psychosocial factors also need to be taken into account in the evaluation of IAQ and the prevalence of IA-related symptoms in schools.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Allergic diseases, such as bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and psychiatric disorders, are major health issues. There have been reports that allergic diseases were associated with depression or anxiety disorders. This study aimed to investigate the association between these allergic diseases and the risk of developing overall psychiatric disorders in patients from Taiwan. METHODS This cohort study used the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program. A total of 186,588 enrolled patients, with 46,647 study subjects who had suffered from allergic diseases, and 139,941 controls matched for sex and age, from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Dataset of 2000-2015, were selected from a sub-dataset of the National Health Insurance Research Database. Fine and Gray's competing risk model analysis was used to explore the hazard ratio (HR), and 95% confidence interval, for the risk of allergic diseases being associated with the risk of developing psychiatric disorders during the 15 years of follow-up. RESULTS Of the study subjects, 5,038 (10.8%) developed psychiatric disorders when compared to 9,376 (6.7%) in the control group, with significant difference (p < 0.001). Fine and Gray's competing risk model analysis revealed that the adjusted HR was 1.659 (95% CI = 1.602-1.717, p < 0.001). In this study, we found that the groups of atopic dermatitis alone and the allergic rhinitis + atopic dermatitis were associated with a lower risk of psychiatric disorders, but all the other four groups, such as bronchial asthma alone, allergic rhinitis alone, bronchial asthma + allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma + atopic dermatitis, and the combination of all these three allergic diseases, were associated with a higher risk of psychiatric disorders. CONCLUSION Allergic diseases are therefore associated with a 1.66-fold increased hazard of psychiatric disorders in Taiwan.

Abstract
Allergic rhinitis (AR), one of the common diseases of the upper respiratory system, is associated with high risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Biyuanling Granules (BLG), a formulated preparation of traditional Chinese medicine, has been used in China for treatment of AR for more than a decade; however, its exact action against allergic rhinitis and the mechanism involved remain unclear. In this study, we studied the effects of BLG on allergic rhinitis induced by toluene-2, 4- diisocyanate (TDI) in guinea pigs. The anti-AR effects of BLG were evaluated by behavior observations, histological examinations of the nasal tissues stained with hematoxylin and eosin staining (H&E), immunohistochemical analyses of pulmonary surfactant associated protein (SP), Bcl-2 Associated X Protei (Bax), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) in the nasal mucosa, and serum tests of interleukin-4 (IL-4) and human SARS-specific immunoglobulin (SIgE) levels. We observed that in the AR-positive animals treated with BLG, the symptom scores were significantly higher (P < 0.01), the nasal mucosa edemas and inflammatory infiltrates were significantly alleviated (P < 0.01) and the serum IL-4 and SIgE levels were significantly decreased (P < 0.05) as compared with the control group. Immunohistochemical examinations of the nasal mucosa demonstrated that the expressions of TNF-α, SP and VCAM-1 were significantly decreased (P < 0.01), whereas Bax expression was increased in the BLG treatment groups (P < 0.05). These results indicate that BLG can effectively suppress the TDI-induced AR, and that the protective effects of BLG were associated with reductions of TNF-α, SP and VCAM-1, and an elevation of Bax, suggesting that BLG exerts its AR-suppressive effects through inhibition of inflammatory response.
