Nickel Induces Pyroptosis via the Nrf2/NLRP3 Pathway in Kidney of Mice

Nickel (Ni) is considered a toxic metal, and excessive exposure can cause kidney damage. This study was designed to explore whether nickel chloride (NiCl2) can induce cell pyroptosis and its possible mechanism. Here, we found that NiCl2 treatment could reduce the kidney index and result in kidney damage. Meanwhile, NiCl2 could obviously induce renal pyroptosis, which was characterized by an increase in IL-18, IL-1β, NLRP3, and GSDMD expression. Furthermore, NiCl2 induced pyroptosis through the Nrf2/NLRP3 pathway which featured down-regulated protein and mRNA expression levels of Nrf2 and up-regulated protein and mRNA expression levels of Caspase-1, NLRP3, and GSDMD. In summary, excessive Ni exposure can induce renal cell pyroptosis, ultimately leading to kidney tissue damage and hindering normal development, and its possible mechanism may be due to the inhibition of the Nrf2 pathway.

Ecological impacts and potential hazards of nickel on soil microbes, plants, and human health

Nickel (Ni) contamination poses a serious environmental concern, particularly in developing countries: where, anthropogenic activities significantly contributes to Ni accumulations in soils and waters. The contamination of agricultural soils with Ni, increases risks of its entry to terrestrial ecosystems and food production systems posing a threat to both food security and safety. We examined the existing published articles regarding the origin, source, accumulation, and transport of Ni in soil environments. Particularly, we reviewed the bioavailability and toxic effects of Ni to soil invertebrates and microbes, as well as its impact on soil-plant interactions including seed germination, nutrient uptake, photosynthesis, oxidative stress, antioxidant enzyme activity, and biomass production. Moreover, it underscores the potential health hazards associated with consuming crops cultivated in Ni-contaminated soils and elucidates the pathways through which Ni enters the food chain. The published literature suggests that chronic Ni exposure may have long-term implications for the food supply chain and the health of the public. Therefore, an aggressive effort is required for interdisciplinary collaboration for assessing and mitigating the ecological and health risks associated with Ni contamination. It also argues that these measures are necessary in light of the increasing level of Ni pollution in soil ecosystems and the potential impacts on public health and the environment.

Revolutionizing soil heavy metal remediation: Cutting-edge innovations in plant disposal technology

Soil contamination with heavy metals has emerged as a global environmental threat, compromising agricultural productivity, ecosystem integrity, and human health. Conventional remediation techniques often fall short due to high costs, operational complexities, and environmental drawbacks. Plant-based disposal technologies, including biochar, phytometallurgy, and phrolysis, have emerged as promising solutions in this regard. Grounded in a novel experimental framework, biochar is studied for its dual role as soil amendment and metal adsorbent, while phytometallurgy is explored for its potential in resource recovery and economic benefits derived from harvested metal-rich plant biomass. Pyrolysis, in turn, is assessed for transforming contaminated biomass into value-added products, thereby minimizing waste. These plant disposal technologies create a circular model of remediation and resource utilization that holds the potential for application in large-scale soil recovery projects, development of environmentally friendly agro-industries, and advancement in sustainable waste management practices. This review mainly discussed cutting-edge plant disposal technologies-biochar application, phytometallurgy, and pyrolysis-as revolutionary approaches to soil heavy metal remediation. The efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact of these innovative technologies are especially evaluated in comparison with traditional methods. The success of these applications could signal a paradigm shift in how we approach both environmental remediation and resource recovery, with profound implications for sustainable development and circular economy strategies.

Sp1-activated FGFR2 is involved in early-life exposure to nickel-induced craniosynostosis by regulating the ERK1/2 signaling pathway

Nickel, a common environmental hazard, is a risk factor for craniosynostosis. However, the underlying biological mechanism remains unclear. Here, we found that early-life nickel exposure induced craniosynostosis in mice. In vitro, nickel promoted the osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), and its osteogenic ability in vivo was confirmed by an ectopic osteogenesis model. Further mRNA sequencing showed that ERK1/2 signaling and FGFR2 were aberrantly activated. FGFR2 was identified as a key regulator of ERK1/2 signaling. By promoter methylation prediction and methylation-specific PCR (MSP) assays, we found that nickel induced hypomethylation in the promoter of FGFR2, which increased its binding affinity to the transcription factor Sp1. During pregnancy and postnatal stages, AZD4547 rescued nickel-induced craniosynostosis by inhibiting FGFR2 and ERK1/2. Compared with normal individuals, nickel levels were increased in the serum of individuals with craniosynostosis. Further logistic and RCS analyses showed that nickel was an independent risk factor for craniosynostosis with a nonlinear correlation. Mediated analysis showed that FGFR2 mediated 30.13% of the association between nickel and craniosynostosis risk. Collectively, we demonstrate that early-life nickel exposure triggers the hypomethylation of FGFR2 and its binding to Sp1, thereby promoting the osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs by ERK1/2 signaling, leading to craniosynostosis.

Technological and economic analysis of electrokinetic remediation of contaminated soil: A global perspective and its application in Indian scenario

Globally million hectares of land annually is getting contaminated by heavy metalloids like As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, and Se, with current concentrations in soil above geo-baseline or regulatory standards. The heavy metals are highly toxic, mobile, and persistent and hence require immediate and effective mitigation. There are many available remediation techniques like surface capping, encapsulation, landfilling, soil flushing, soil washing, electrokinetic extraction, stabilization, solidification, vitrification, phytoremediation, and bioremediation which have been evolved to clean up heavy metal-contaminated sites. Nevertheless, all of the technologies have some applicability and limitations making the soil remediation initiative unsustainable. Among the available technologies, electrokinetic remediation (EKR) has been comparatively recognized to mitigate contaminated sites via both in-situ and ex-situ approaches due to its efficiency, suitability for use in low permeability soil, and requirement of low potential gradient. The work critically analyzes the EKR concerning techno, economic, and sustainability aspect for evaluating its application on various substrates and environmental conditions. The current soil contamination status in India is presented and the application of EKR for the heavy metal remediation from soil has been evaluated. The present work summaries a comprehensive and exhaustive review on EKR technology proving its effectiveness for a country like India where the huge amount of waste generated could not be treated due to lack of infrastructure, technology, and economic constraints.

Recent breakthroughs on the development of electrodeionization systems for toxic pollutants removal from water environment

Since ecosystems are becoming inherently polluted, long-term contaminant removal methods are required. Electrodeionization, in particular, has recently been demonstrated as an effective approach for eliminating ionic compounds from contaminated water sources. Being a more environmentally friendly technology is most likely the main reason for its eminence. It uses electricity to replace toxic contaminants that are conventionally used to regenerate and hence reducing the toxins associated with resin regeneration. In wastewater treatment, continuous electrodeionization system overcomes several limitations of ion exchange resins, notably ion dumping. This prospective assessment delves into the mechanism, principle, and theory of electrodeionization system. It also focused on the design and applications, particularly in the removal of toxic compounds, as well as current advances in the electrodeionization system. Recent breakthroughs in electrodeionization were comprehensively discussed. Further developments in electrodeionization systems are also projected, with improved efficiency at the time of functioning at lower costs because of reduced energy use, proving them desirable for commercial usage with a broad array of applications across the globe.

Response of Propsilocerus akamusi (Diptera: Chironomidae) to the leachates from AMD-contaminated sediments: Implications for metal bioremediation of AMD-polluted areas

Acid mine water (AMD) is a global environmental problem caused by coal mining with the characteristics of low pH and high concentrations of metals and sulfates. It is a pertinent topic to seek both economical and environmentally friendly approaches to minimize the harmful effects of AMD on the environment. Insect larvae are considered a promising solution for pollution treatment. Chironomidae is the most tolerant family to contaminants in pools and its larvae have a strong capacity for metal accumulation from sediment. This paper aimed to evaluate the larvae of Propsilocerus akamusi, a dominant species in the chironomid community, as a new species for entomoremediation in AMD-polluted areas. We detected the toxic effects of AMD on P. akamusi larvae based on their survival and the trace metals bioaccumulation capabilities of P. akamusi larvae. Moreover, we analyzed the expression patterns of four stress-response genes, HSP70, Eno1, HbV, and Hb VII in P. akamusi larvae. Our results revealed that AMD exposure did not significantly affect the survival of the P. akamusi larvae and individuals exposed to some AMD gradients even exhibited higher survival. We also observed the significantly accumulated concentrations of Fe, Ni, and Zn as well as higher bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) for Ni and Zn in the P. akamusi larvae exposure to AMD. Induced expression of Eno1 and Hb VII may play important roles in the AMD tolerance of P. akamusi larvae. This study indicated the potential application of P. akamusi larvae in the metal bioremediation of AMD-polluted areas. STATEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a global environmental problem related to coal mining activities. AMD pollution has become a long-term, worldwide issue for its interactive and complex stress factors. Bioremediation is an effective method to remove the metals of AMD from wastewater to prevent downstream pollution. However, the disadvantages of the slow growth rate, susceptibility to seasonal changes, difficult post-harvest management, and small biomass of hyperaccumulating plants greatly limit the usefulness of phytoremediation. Insect larvae may be useful candidate organisms to overcome these shortcomings and have been considered a promising pollution solution. Propsilocerus akamusi is a dominant species in the chironomid community and is distributed widely in many lakes of eastern Asia. This species has extraordinary abilities to resist various stresses. This research is the first time to our knowledge to evaluate the application of P. akamusi as a new species in entomoremediation in AMD-contaminated areas.

Plummeting toxic contaminates from water through phycoremediation: Mechanism, influencing factors and future outlook to enhance the capacity of living and non-living algae

Freshwater habitats hold a unique role in the survival of all living organisms and supply water for drinking, irrigation, and life support activities. In recent decades, due to anthropogenic activities, deterioration in the water quality has been a long-lasting problem and challenge to the scientific fraternity. Although, these freshwater bodies have a bearable intrinsic capacity for pollution load however alarming increase in pollution limits the intrinsic capacities and requires additional technological interventions. The release of secondary pollutants from conventional interventions further needs revisiting the existing methodologies and asking for green interventions. Green interventions such as phycoremediation are natural, eco-friendly, economic, and energy-efficient alternatives and provide additional benefits such as nutrient recovery, biofuel production, and valuable secondary metabolites from polluted freshwater bodies. This systemic review in a nut-shell comprises the recent research insights on phycoremediation, technological implications, and influencing factors, and further discusses the associated mechanisms of metal ions biosorption by living and non-living algae, its advantages, and limitations. Besides, the article explores the possibility of future research prospects for applicability at a field scale that will help in the efficient utilization of resources, and improved ecological and health risks.

DNA fragmentation, chromosomal aberrations, and multi-toxic effects induced by nickel and the modulation of Ni-induced damage by pomegranate seed extract in Allium cepa L

This study was designed to assess the recovery effect of pomegranate seed extract (PSEx) against nickel (Ni)-induced damage in Allium cepa. Except for the control group treated with tap water, five experimental groups were exposed to 265 mg L-1 PSEx, 530 mg L-1 PSEx, 1 mg L-1 NiCI2, 265 mg L-1 PSEx + 1 mg L-1 NiCI2, and 530 mg L-1 PSEx + 1 mg L-1 NiCI2, respectively. The toxicity of Ni was examined through the analysis of physiological (germination percentage, weight gain, and root length), cytotoxicity (mitotic index), genotoxicity (micronucleus, chromosomal anomalies, and Comet test), and biochemical (malondialdehyde, proline, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents, the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase) parameters. Meristematic cell defects were also investigated. The NiCl2-DNA interaction was evaluated through spectral shift analysis. Values of all physiological parameters, mitotic index scores, and chlorophyll contents decreased while micronucleus frequency, DNA tail percentage, chromosomal anomalies, proline, MDA, and enzyme activities increased following Ni administration. According to the tail DNA percentage scale, Ni application caused "high damage" to DNA. Ni-induced chromosomal anomalies were fragment, sticky chromosome, vagrant chromosome, bridge, unbalanced chromatin distribution, reverse polarization, and nucleus with bud. NiCl2-DNA interaction caused a hyperchromic shift in the UV/Vis spectrum of DNA by spectral profile analysis. Ni exposure impaired root meristems as evidenced by the formation of epidermis cell damage, flattened cell nucleus, thickened cortex cell wall, and blurry vascular tissue. Substantial recovery was seen in all parameters with the co-administration of PSEx and Ni. Recovery effects in the parameters were 18-51% and 41-84% in the 265 mg L-1 PSEx + 1 mg L-1 NiCI2 and 530 mg L-1 PSEx + 1 mg L-1 NiCI2 groups, respectively. The Comet scale showed that PSEx applied with Ni reduced DNA damage from "high" to "moderate." Ni-induced thickened cortex cell wall and blurry vascular tissue damage disappeared completely when 530 mg L-1 PSEx was mixed with Ni. PSEx successfully reduced the negative effects of Ni, which can be attributed to its content of antioxidants and bioactive ingredients.

Fluorescent and chromogenic organic probes to detect group 10 metal ions: design strategies and sensing applications

Group 10 metals including Ni, Pd and Pt have been extensively applied in various essential aspects of human social life, material science, industrial manufactures, medicines and biology. The ionic forms of these metals are involved in several biologically important processes due to their strong binding capability towards different biomolecules. However, the mishandling or overuse of such metals has been linked to serious contamination of our ecological system, more specifically in soil and water bodies with acute consequences. Therefore, the detection of group 10 metal ions in biological as well as environmental samples is of huge significance from the human health point of view. Related to this, considerable efforts are underway to develop adequately efficient and facile methods to achieve their selective detection. Optical sensing of metal ions has gained increasing attention of researchers, particularly in the environmental and biological settings. Innovatively designed optical probes (fluorescent or colorimetric) are usually comprised of three basic components: an explicitly tailored receptor unit, a signalling unit and a clearly defined reporter unit. This review deals with the recent progress in the design and fabrication of fluorescent or colorimetric organic sensors for the detection of group 10 metal ions (Ni(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II)), with attention to the general aspects for design of such sensors.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles require K+ and hydrogen sulfide to regulate nitrogen and carbohydrate metabolism during adaptive response to drought and nickel stress in cucumber

Crop plants face severe yield losses worldwide owing to their exposure to multiple abiotic stresses. The study described here, was conducted to comprehend the response of cucumber seedlings to drought (induced by 15% w/v polyethylene glycol 8000; PEG) and nickel (Ni) stress in presence or absence of titanium dioxide nanoparticle (nTiO2). In addition, it was also investigated how nitrogen (N) and carbohydrate metabolism, as well as the defense system, are affected by endogenous potassium (K+) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Cucumber seedlings were subjected to Ni stress and drought, which led to oxidative stress and triggered the defense system. Under the stress, N and carbohydrate metabolism were differentially affected. Supplementation of the stressed seedlings with nTiO2 (15 mg L-1) enhanced the activity of antioxidant enzymes, ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) system and elevated N and carbohydrates metabolism. Application of nTiO2 also enhanced the accumulation of phytochelatins and activity of the enzymes of glyoxalase system that provided additional protection against the metal and toxic methylglyoxal. Osmotic stress brought on by PEG and Ni, was countered by the increase of proline and carbohydrates levels, which helped the seedlings keep their optimal level of hydration. Application nTiO2 improved the biosynthesis of H2S and K+ retention through regulating Cys biosynthesis and H+-ATPase activity, respectively. Observed outcomes lead to the conclusion that nTiO2 maintains redox homeostasis, and normal functioning of N and carbohydrates metabolism that resulted in the protection of cucumber seedlings against drought and Ni stress. Use of 20 mM tetraethylammonium chloride (K+- channel blocker), 500 μM sodium orthovanadate (PM H+-ATPase inhibitor), and 1 mM hypotaurine (H2S scavenger) demonstrate that endogenous K+ and H2S were crucial for the nTiO2-induced modulation of plants' adaptive responses to the imposed stress.

Melatonin supplementation combats nickel-induced phytotoxicity in Trigonella foenum-graecum L. plants through metal accumulation reduction, upregulation of NO generation, antioxidant defence machinery and secondary metabolites

Nickel (Ni) at a toxic level (80 mg kg-1 of soil) adversely affects the crop performance of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.). Melatonin (MEL), a potent plant growth regulator, is ascribed to offer promising roles in heavy metal stress alleviation. In this study, different doses viz. 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 μM of MEL were administered to plants through foliage under normal and Ni-stress conditions. The experiment unveiled positive roles of MEL in enhancing root-shoot lengths, fresh-dry weights, seed yield and restoring photosynthetic efficiency assessed in terms of higher Fv/Fm, YII, qP, and lower NPQ values in plants exposed to Ni (80 mg kg-1). MEL supplementation (at 75 μM) effectively restricted Ni accumulation and regulated oxidative stress via modulation of MDA, O2-, H2O2 and NO generation, most prominently. Besides, MEL at 75 μM more conspicuously perked up the activities of antioxidant enzymes like SOD, POX, CAT and APX by 15.7, 20.0, 14.5 and 16.5% higher than the Ni-exposed plants for effective ROS scavenging. Likewise, MEL at 75 μM also efficiently counteracted Ni-generated osmotic stress, through an upscaled accumulation of proline (19.6%) along with the enhancement in the concentration of total phenols (13.6%), total tannins (11.2%), total flavonoids (25.5%) and total alkaloids (19.2%) in plant's leaves. Furthermore, under 80 mg kg-1 Ni stress, MEL at 75 μM improved the seed's trigonelline content by 40.1% higher compared to Ni-disturbed plants, upgrading the pharmacological actions of the plant. Thus, the present study deciphers the envisaged roles of MEL in the alleviation of Ni stress in plants to enhance overall crop productivity.

Source-oriented risks apportionment of toxic metals in river sediments of Bangladesh: a national wide application of PMF model and pollution indices

Intense human activities, particularly industrial and agricultural output, has enriched metal(loid)s in riverine sediment and endangered aquatic ecosystems and human health. Promoting proper river management requires an assessment of the possible ecological hazards and pollution posed by metal(loid)s in sediments. However, there are limited large-scale risk assessments of metal(loid)s contamination in riverine sediment in heavily populated nations like Bangladesh. This study compiled data on sediment metal(loid)s, for example, Cd, As, Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb, Mn, and Zn, from 24 major rivers located across Bangladesh between 2011 and 2022 and applied positive matrix factorization (PMF) to identify the critical metal(loid)s sources and PMF model-based ecological risks. Based on studied metal(loid)s, 12-78% of rivers posed higher contents than the upper continental crust and 8% of the river sediments for Cr and Ni, whereas 4% for Cd and As exceeded probable effect concentration. Cr and Ni in the sum of toxic units (STU), whereas Mn, As and Cd in potential ecological risk (PER) posed the highest contribution to contaminate sediments. In the studied rivers, sediment contaminant Mn derived from natural sources; Zn and Ni originated from mixed sources; Cr and Cu were released from the tannery and industrial emissions and Cd originated from agricultural practices. Source-based PER and NIRI indicated that mixed source (4% rivers) and tannery and industrial emission (4% rivers) posed very high risks in sediments. For the creation of macroscale policies and the restoration of contaminated rivers, our national-scale comprehensive study offers helpful references.

Nickel (Ni) phytotoxicity and detoxification mechanisms: A review

Scientists studying the environment, physiology, and biology have been particularly interested in nickel (Ni) because of its dual effects (essentiality and toxicity) on terrestrial biota. It has been reported in some studies that without an adequate supply of Ni, plants are unable to finish their life cycle. The safest Ni limit for plants is 1.5 μg g^-1, while the limit for soil is between 75 and 150 μg g^-1. Ni at lethal levels harms plants by interfering with a variety of physiological functions, including enzyme activity, root development, photosynthesis, and mineral uptake. This review focuses on the occurrence and phytotoxicity of Ni with respect to growth, physiological and biochemical aspects. It also delves into advanced Ni detoxification mechanisms such as cellular modifications, organic acids, and chelation of Ni by plant roots, and emphasizes the role of genes involved in Ni detoxification. The discussion has been carried out on the current state of using soil amendments and plant-microbe interactions to successfully remediate Ni from contaminated sites. This review has identified potential drawbacks and difficulties of various strategies for Ni remediation, discussed the importance of these findings for environmental authorities and decision-makers, and concluded by noting the sustainability concerns and future research needs regarding Ni remediation.

Exogenous abscisic acid fine-tunes heavy metal accumulation and plant's antioxidant defence mechanism to optimize crop performance and secondary metabolite production in Trigonella foenum-graecum L. under nickel stress

Nickel (Ni) contamination of farming soil has become currently a recurring global menace to agriculture crop productivity. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the putative contributions of abscisic acid (ABA) to extemporize Ni tolerance in Trigonella foenum-graecum L. (fenugreek) plants. The outcomes of this study exposed that exogenous supplementation of ABA at 10, 20, 40 and 80 µM considerably enhanced the growth and physiological attributes of fenugreek under 80 mg Ni kg^-1 soil, however, 40 µM of ABA exhibited the best results under normal and Ni-stressed conditions. ABA-mediated Ni tolerance was marked by reductions in Ni accumulation and consequent lowering of reactive oxygen species (ROS) like hydrogen peroxide and superoxide radicals. Contrarily, NO (nitric oxide) level increased in response to ABA application under Ni stress conditions, accompanied by promoted antioxidant activities through improved levels of secondary metabolites, proline, and perked-up ROS-detoxification enzymes activities. Exogenous ABA at 40 µM concentration applied to Ni-exposed plants (80 mg Ni kg^-1 soil) improved the total content of alkaloids, phenolics, flavonoids and tannins by 14.3%, 10.2%, 15.4% and 7.0%, respectively, over Ni-stressed plants alone. Additionally, seed trigonelline content imparting several pharmacological actions to the fenugreek plant exhibited a remarkable escalation upto 3.6 and 2.6 mg g^-1 DW under '40 µM ABA' and '40 µM ABA + 80 mg Ni kg^-1 soil' treatments, respectively. The findings of the study suggest that ABA plays a key role in enhancing the overall performance of the fenugreek crop under excessive Ni stress.

Trace nickel determination in seawater matrix using combination of dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and triethylamine-assisted Mg(OH)2 method

In order to eliminate the effects of seawater matrix on the precise/accurate determination of elements, new and efficient analytical procedure requires. In this study, co-precipitation method based on the triethylamine (TEA)-assisted Mg(OH)₂ was performed to eliminate side-effects of seawater medium on the determination with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) prior to the preconcentration of nickel by an optimized dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) method. Under the optimum conditions of the presented method, the limit of detection and quantification (LOD, LOQ) values obtained for nickel were found as 16.1 and 53.8 μg kg^-1, respectively. Seawater samples collected from West Antarctic region were used for real sample applications to check the accuracy and applicability of developed method, and satisfying recovery results (86-97%) were obtained. In addition to this, the digital image-based colorimetric detection system and the UV-Vis system were applied to confirm the applicability of the developed DLLME-FAAS method in other analytical systems.

Enhanced effect and mechanism of nano Fe-Ca bimetallic oxide modified substrate on Cu(II) and Ni(II) removal in constructed wetland

In this study, Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles (Fe₂O₃ NPs) and CaO NPs were loaded on the zeolite sphere carrier to create nano Fe-Ca bimetallic oxide (Fe-Ca-NBMO) modified substrate, which was introduced into constructed wetland (CW) to remove Cu(II) and Ni(II) via constructing "substrate-microorganism" system. Adsorption experiments showed that the equilibrium adsorption capacities of Fe-Ca-NBMO modified substrate for Cu(II) and Ni(II) were respectively 706.48 and 410.59 mg/kg at an initial concentration of 20 mg/L, 2.45 and 2.39 times of gravel. The Cu(II) and Ni(II) removal efficiencies in CW with Fe-Ca-NBMO modified substrate respectively reached 99.7% and 99.9% at an influent concentration of 100 mg/L, significantly higher than those in gravel-based CW (47.0% and 34.3%). Fe-Ca-NBMO modified substrate could promote Cu(II) and Ni(II) removal by increasing electrostatic adsorption, chemical precipitation, as well as the abundances of resistant microorganisms (Geobacter, Desulfuromonas, Zoogloea, Dechloromonas, and Desulfobacter) and functional genes (copA, cusABC, ABC.CD.P, gshB, and exbB). This study provided an effective method to enhance Cu(II) and Ni(II) removal of electroplating wastewater by CW with Fe-Ca-NBMO modified substrate.

Association between prenatal exposure to trace elements mixture and visual acuity in infants: A prospective birth cohort study

BACKGROUND

Prenatal environmental factors may affect the development of the offspring and can bring long lasting consequences to the offspring's health. To date, only few studies have reported inconclusive association between prenatal single trace element exposure and visual acuity, and no studies have investigated the association between prenatal exposure to trace elements mixture and visual acuity in infants.

METHODS

In the prospective cohort study, grating acuity in infants (12 ± 1 months) was measured by Teller Acuity Cards II. Concentrations of 20 trace elements in maternal urine samples collected in early-trimester were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Elastic net regression (ENET) was applied to select important trace elements. Nonlinear associations of the trace elements levels with abnormal grating were explored using the restricted cubic spline (RCS) method. The associations between selected individual elements and abnormal grating acuity were further appraised using the logistic regression model. Then Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) was used to estimate the joint effects of mixture and interactions between trace elements combining with NLinteraction.

RESULTS

Of 932 mother-infant pairs, 70 infants had abnormal grating acuity. The ENET model produced 8 trace elements with non-zero coefficients, including cadmium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, rubidium, antimony, tin and titanium. RCS analyses identified no nonlinear associations of the 8 elements with abnormal grating acuity. The single-exposure analyses using logistic regression revealed that prenatal molybdenum exposure possessed a significantly positive association with abnormal grating acuity (odds ratio [OR]: 1.44 per IQR increase, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05, 1.96; P = 0.023), while prenatal nickel exposure presented with a significantly inverse association with abnormal grating acuity (OR: 0.64 per IQR increase, 95% CI: 0.45, 0.89; P = 0.009). Similar effects were also observed in BKMR models. Moreover, the BKMR models and NLinteraction method identified potential interaction between molybdenum and nickel.

CONCLUSIONS

We established that prenatal exposure to high concentration of molybdenum and low concentration of nickel was associated with the increased risk of abnormal visual acuity. Potential interaction may exist between molybdenum and nickel on abnormal visual acuity.

Statistical and spatial analysis for soil heavy metals over the Murray-Darling river basin in Australia

Heavy metals (HMs) are a vital elements for investigating the pollutant level of sediments and water bodies. The Murray-Darling river basin area located in Australia is experiencing severe damage to increased crop productivity, loss of soil fertility, and pollution levels within the vicinity of the river system. This basin is the most effective primary production area in Australia where agricultural productivity is increased the gross domastic product in the entire mainland. In this study, HMs contaminations are examined for eight study sites selected for the Murray-Darling river basin where the inverse Distance Weighting interpolation method is used to identify the distribution of HMs. To pursue this, four different pollution indices namely the Geo-accumulation index (I_geo), Contamination factor (CF), Pollution load index (PLI), single-factor pollution index (SPLI), and the heavy metal pollution index (HPI) are computed. Following this, the Pearson correlation matrix is used to identify the relationships among the two HM parameters. The results indicate that the conductivity and N (%) are relatively high in respect to using I_geo and PLI indexes for study sites 4, 6, and 7 with 2.93, 3.20, and 1.38, respectively. The average HPI is 216.9071 that also indicates higher level pollution in the Murray-Darling river basin and the highest HPI value is noted in sample site 1 (353.5817). The study also shows that the levels of Co, P, Conductivity, Al, and Mn are mostly affected by HMs and that these indices indicate the maximum HM pollution level in the Murray-Darling river basin. Finally, the results show that the high HM contamination level appears to influence human health and local environmental conditions.

Application of microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) techniques to remove heavy metal in the natural environment: A critical review

The occurrence of imbalanced heavy metals concentration due to anthropogenic hindrances in the aquatic and terrestrial environment has become a potential risk to life after circulating through different food chains. The microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) method has gradually received great attention from global researchers but the underlying mechanism of heavy metal mineralization is not well-understood and challenging, limiting the applications in wastewater engineering. This paper reviews the metabolic pathways, mechanisms, operational factors, and mathematical/modeling approaches in the MICP process. Subsequently, the recent advancement in MICP for the remediation of heavy metal pollution is being discussed. In the follow-up, the key challenges and prospective associated with technical bottlenecks of MICP method are elaborated. The prospective study reveals that MICP technology could be efficiently used to remediate heavy metal contaminants from the natural environment in a cost-effective way and has the potential to improve soil properties while remediating heavy metal contaminated soil.

The role of nickel in cadmium accumulation in rice

Rice is one of the world's staple foods. Cadmium (Cd) levels in paddy soil are still increasing, and "Cd-contaminated rice" is a frequent occurrence, posing a serious threat to human health. Therefore, Cd contamination in rice is a key issue in agricultural production that needs to be addressed urgently. The Cd accumulation in rice is closely related to other elements. In this study, the impact of nickel (Ni) on the uptake and accumulation of Cd in rice was revealed, and the mechanism was discussed. Statistical analysis of field data showed that Cd concentration in rice grains decreased exponentially with increasing Ni concentration in paddy soils, which was verified by the hydroponic experiments. Under 5 μmol/L Cd exposure conditions, the addition of Ni (100 μmol/L) reduced the Cd contents in roots, stems, and leaves by 81.6 %, 60.6 %, and 65.9 %, respectively. With the presence of Ni, the amount of iron plaque decreased, and the Cd content in the iron plaque was reduced due to the competition between Ni and Cd for adsorption sites. In addition, the migration of Cd from stems to leaves was reduced. At the same time, the distribution of Cd in the cell was altered, and the concentration of Cd in the root cell walls increased with increasing Ni addition under 5 μmol/L Cd exposure. These findings highlight the critical role of Ni in inhibiting Cd accumulation in rice, and provide important information for understanding the effects of coexisting elements in Cd-contaminated soils on Cd accumulation in crops.

Impact of Piriformospora indica on various characteristics of tomatoes during nickel nitrate stress under aeroponic and greenhouse conditions

As an essential nutrient for plant growth, nickel's (Ni) requirement is very low, and its augmented level causes environmental pollution and toxicity. Being a root endophytic fungus, Piriformospora indica (P. indica) can be beneficial to many plants under stress and non-stress conditions, particularly in terms of their improved growth performance. P. indica, as evidenced, enhances tolerance and resistance in most plants once they experience a range of stresses caused by biotic and abiotic factors, e.g., diseases and heavy metals. Against this background, the positive effects of P. indica on the tomato plants under Ni-induced stress (300, 600, and 900 mg L^-1) were analyzed in three experiments at labs, at greenhouses, and via aeroponics in this study. The growth traits of the tomato plants, such as root length (RL) and root dry weight (RDW), were accordingly found to be positively boosted in the cases treated with P. indica compared to the non-treated ones. Treating with P. indica also thwarted the negative effects of Ni on some biochemical traits, including anthocyanin (Anth), proline (Pro), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), while significantly minimizing the adverse impacts of this heavy metal at different levels on hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Despite this, the Ni-stressed plants indicated much better traits in the presence of this fungus, compared with the non-treated ones, in most of the cases measured. Moreover, the photosynthetic pigments, i.e., chlorophyll a and b (Chl a & b) and carotenoid content (Carrot), were significantly higher in the tomato plants treated with P. indica under high Ni-induced stress as compared with the non-treated ones under non-Ni conditions, in which these pigments were low. The pro-production was further observed all through the P. indica inoculation, which could aid the treated plants in becoming Ni-stress-tolerant. Finally, the current study contributed to a better understanding of how to use the P. indica symbiosis to induce heavy metal tolerance in tomato plants, such as Ni, to meet the goals of sustainable agriculture.

Competitive fiber optic sensors for the highly selective detection of mercury in water

Two competitive fiber optic sensors for the rapid, sensitive, and highly selective detection of mercury in water are designed, fabricated, and evaluated. A wavelength-modulated sensor based on an etched single-mode-multimode-single-mode (E-SMS) optical fiber structure and an intensity-modulated sensor based on fiber optics with a slanted end were fabricated by readily reproducible methods. The sensors were activated with a nanostructured chitosan/maghemite (CS/Fe₂O₃) composite thin film for the selective detection of mercury ions (Hg²⁺) in water. The functionalized sensors were implemented to experimentally validate the potential of CS/Fe₂O₃ thin film for optical sensing of Hg²⁺ in drinking water. The sensor based on the E-SMS structure exhibited a wavelength-modulated response with a sensitivity of up to 290 pm/(µg/mL), and the sensor based on the slanted end structure showed an intensity-modulated response with a sensitivity of -0.07dBm/(µg/mL). Validation of the experimental assay method proves the ability to selectively detect chemical interactions as low as 1 ng/mL (one part per billion) of Hg²⁺ in water for both sensors. The high specificity of the two sensors was demonstrated by evaluating their responses to a number of potentially interfering metal ions in water. These sensors are cost-effective, simple to construct, and easy to implement, which makes them very promising for the on-site detection and monitoring of mercury in bodies of water.

Phytoremediation of Potentially Toxic Elements: Role, Status and Concerns

Environmental contamination with a myriad of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is triggered by various natural and anthropogenic activities. However, the industrial revolution has increased the intensity of these hazardous elements and their concentration in the environment, which, in turn, could provoke potential ecological risks. Additionally, most PTEs pose a considerable nuisance to human beings and affect soil, aquatic organisms, and even nematodes and microbes. This comprehensive review aims to: (i) introduce potentially toxic elements; (ii) overview the major sources of PTEs in the major environmental compartments; (iii) briefly highlight the major impacts of PTEs on humans, plants, aquatic life, and the health of soil; (iv) appraise the major methods for tackling PTE-caused pollution; (v) discuss the concept and applications of the major eco-technological/green approaches (comprising phytoextraction, rhizofiltration, phytostabilization, phytovolatilization, and phytorestoration); (vi) highlight the role of microbes in phytoremediation under PTE stress; and (vii) enlighten the major role of genetic engineering in advancing the phytoremediation of varied PTEs. Overall, appropriate strategies must be developed in order to stop gene flow into wild species, and biosafety issues must be properly addressed. Additionally, consistent efforts should be undertaken to tackle the major issues (e.g., risk estimation, understanding, acceptance and feasibility) in order to guarantee the successful implementation of phytoremediation programs, raise awareness of this green technology among laymen, and to strengthen networking among scientists, stakeholders, industrialists, governments and non-government organizations.

Dual-layer Janus charged nanofiltration membranes constructed by sequential electrospray polymerization for efficient water softening

The separation of hardness ions such as calcium and magnesium from hard water can improve water quality, which is important but technically challenging. Nanofiltration (NF) has attracted much attention because of its efficiency, environmental friendliness and low cost. However, common NF membranes with a singly (either positively or negatively) charged layer have insufficient water softening capacity. In this work, two types of dual-layer Janus charged polyamide NF membranes composed of oppositely charged inner and outer layers were developed for the first time by sequential electrospray polymerization strategy for efficient water softening. The effect of the microstructure of the dually charged barrier layer on the separation performance of divalent salt ions was explored. Detailed mechanistic studies revealed that the microstructure of the outer layer of the barrier layer played a crucial role in the ion separation of the Janus membrane due to its control of the reverse transport of ions. Janus charged polyamide NF membrane with a loose outer layer exhibited better water softening performance (93.6% of hardness removed) compared to the singly charged NF membranes due to the simultaneous dual electrostatic effect and no ion reverse transport confinement. This Janus charged NF membrane also possessed good antifouling performance, mainly due to its negatively charged outer layers. The mechanistic insights gained in this study reveal the huge potential of microstructural design toward high-performance Janus charged NF membranes, and provide important guidance on the future development of high-efficiency water softening NF membranes.

Long-term impact of the Tyrnyauz tungsten-molybdenum mining and processing factory waste on environmental pollution and children's population

We studied the consequences of the long-term impact of remediated tailing ponds from the Tyrnyauz tungsten-molybdenum mining and processing factory on the environmental pollution and children living in the area. For more than 60 years, the factory has been engaged in the development of tungsten-molybdenum deposits by open-pit and mine methods and the enrichment of the extracted ore. More than 252,771 thousand tons of waste accumulated in its dumps and tailings ponds. This 170-hectare tailing pond contains more than 125 million tons of waste with arsenic, tungsten, molybdenum and other metals. To examine the possible accumulation of potentially toxic elements in children's bodies, we determined the content of heavy metals in drinking water and in the hair of children. An exfoliated buccal micronucleus test was used to determine the cytogenetic status of children. We did not find significant differences in the content of heavy metals inherent of a tailing pond in children's hair from polluted area compared to the control zone. In buccal cells of children living in the vicinity of the tailings pond, the total number of cytogenetic abnormalities was increased by 4.1 times, the total index of proliferation by 1.5 times, early destruction of the nucleus by 2 times and apoptosis by 1.2 times compared to the clean zone. Thus, we identified a genotoxic and cytotoxic effect on children living in the vicinity of the tailing ponds, which led to an increase in the number of children belonging to the medium- and high-risk groups. No correlations were found between the content of heavy metals in children's hair and the frequency of cells with cytogenetic abnormalities. Weak positive correlation was found between the content of manganese, zinc and copper in children's hair and the indicators of buccal epithelial cell proliferation.

Mechanisms of Ni removal from contaminated groundwater by calcite using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Ni isotope measurements

A flow-through cell (FTC) experiment was conducted to identify mechanisms of Ni removal by calcite through study of changes in Ni speciation and Ni isotope signature during the treatment of simulated Ni-contaminated groundwater. Synthetic Ni-contaminated groundwater was pumped through a FTC packed with crushed natural calcite. Effluent samples were collected to determine concentrations of anions, cations, and for Ni isotope-ratio measurement. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was performed on chosen spots of the solid phase along the FTC length. Isotope data indicated multiple mechanisms affected Ni removal in the FTC system. Ni adsorption to and coprecipitation with calcite dominated the early part of the experiment yielding a fractionation factor of ε = -0.5 ‰. Subsequently, Ni precipitation as a Ni-hydroxide phase became the major process controlling Ni removal, resulting in a fractionation factor ε = -0.4 ‰. XAS analysis confirmed the presence of both Ni(OH)₂ and (Ni, Ca)CO₃ types of Ni local structural environments. Results from this study highlight the potential of Ni isotopes as auxiliary tools to determine the processes involved in Ni attenuation from the environment. The characterization of mechanisms involved in Ni removal from solution is necessary to evaluate potential impacts to the environment and to develop effective remediation strategies.

Occurrence and Health Risks of Heavy Metals in Drinking Water of Self-Supplied Wells in Northern China

Self-supplied wells, an important water resource in remote and scattered regions, are commonly deteriorated by environmental pollution and human activity. In this study, 156 self-supplied well-water samples were collected from remote and scattered areas of Inner Mongolia (NMG), Heilongjiang (HLJ), and the suburbs of Beijing (BJ) in Northern China. Twenty-four heavy metals were identified by using the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and the associated human health risks were assessed by using standards of the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). The concentrations of four heavy metals (As, Fe, Mn, and Tl) in HLJ, one heavy metal (Tl) in BJ, and ten heavy metals (Al, As, B, Cr, Fe, Mn, Mo, Se, Tl, and Zn) in NMG exceeded the limits set by China or the World Health Organization (WHO). The total carcinogenic risk (TCR) and total non-carcinogenic risk (THQ) exceeding set limits mainly occurred in NMG, compared to HLJ and BJ. Moreover, As accounted for 97.87% and 60.06% of the TCR in HLJ and BJ, respectively, while Cr accounted for 70.83% of the TCR in NMG. The TCR caused by Cd in all three areas had a negligible hazard (<10^-4). As accounted for 51.11%, 32.96%, and 40.88% of the THQ in HLJ, BJ, and NMG, respectively. According to the results of the principal component analysis, heavy metals in well water from HLJ and NMG mainly originated from mixed natural processes and anthropogenic sources, whereas, in BJ, most heavy metals probably originated from natural sources. In the future, long-term monitoring of heavy metals in water from self-supplied wells should be conducted for an extensive range of well-water sites, and well water with high As contamination should be monitored more and fully assessed before being used as a drinking-water source.

Effective removal of Pb(II) and Ni(II) ions by Bacillus cereus and Bacillus pumilus: An experimental and mechanistic approach

Herein, we report a bacteria-based strategy as an efficient, reasonable, benign, and promising methodology for remediating heavy metals fed waterbodies. The contemporary study deals with isolating, screening, and characterizing heavy metal resistive bacteria from metal-rich sites. The transcriptome analysis reveals the identity of the isolated species as Bacillus pumilus and Bacillus cereus. Batch studies put forth the bioremoval results in designed conditions of different pH, concentration, dose, and time. The mechanistic actions are drawn using complementary techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The theory of surface adsorption of lead (Pb(II)) and nickel (Ni(II)) is further fostered by the application of adsorption isotherms. The conducted studies establish the bacterial morphological stratagems and multifarious biochemical approaches for countering metallic ions of Pb(II) and Ni(II). The exhibition of significant removal results by the isolated bacterial strains in simulated water samples with remarkable proliferation rates has opened up its favorability for industrial platforms.

In Vitro Digestibility of Minerals and B Group Vitamins from Different Brewers’ Spent Grains

Brewers’ spent grain (BSG), the main by-product of the brewing industry, is a rich source of minerals and water-soluble vitamins such as thiamine, pyridoxine, niacin, and cobalamin. Bioaccessibility through in vitro digestion is an important step toward the complete absorption of minerals and B group vitamins in the gastrointestinal system. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) together with inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for the quantification of the macro- and micro-minerals. An ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) system coupled with a diode array detector (DAD) was used for B group vitamin identification. Four different industrial BSG samples were used in the present study, with different percentages of malted cereals such as barley, wheat, and degermed corn. Calcium’s bioaccessibility was higher in the BSG4 sample composed of 50% malted barley and 50% malted wheat (16.03%), while iron presented the highest bioaccessibility value in the BSG2 sample (30.03%) composed of 65% Pale Ale malt and 35% Vienna malt. On the other hand, vitamin B1 had the highest bioaccessibility value (72.45%) in the BSG3 sample, whilst B6 registered the lowest bioaccessibility value (16.47%) in the BSG2 sample. Therefore, measuring the bioaccessibilty of bioactive BSG compounds before their further use is crucial in assessing their bioavailability.

Effect of nickel (II) on the performance of anodic electroactive biofilms in bioelectrochemical systems

The impact of nickel (Ni²⁺) on the performance of anodic electroactive biofilms (EABs) in the bioelectrochemical system (BES) was investigated in this study. Although it has been reported that Ni²⁺ influences microorganisms in a number of ways, it is unknown how its presence in the anode of a BES affects extracellular electron transfer (EET) of EABs, microbial viability, and the bacterial community. Results revealed that the addition of Ni²⁺ decreased power output from 673.24 ± 12.40 mW/m² at 0 mg/L to 179.26 ± 9.05 mW/m² at 80 mg/L. The metal and chemical oxygen demand removal efficiencies of the microbial fuel cells (MFCs) declined as Ni²⁺ concentration increased, which could be attributed to decreased microbial viability as revealed by SEM and CLSM. FTIR analysis revealed the involvement of various microbial biofilm functional groups, including hydroxyl, amides, methyl, amine, and carboxyl, in the uptake of Ni²⁺. The presence of Ni²⁺ on the anodic biofilms was confirmed by SEM-EDS and XPS analyses. CV demonstrated that the electron transfer performance of the anodic biofilms was negatively correlated with the various Ni²⁺ concentrations. EIS showed that the internal resistance of the MFCs increased with increasing Ni²⁺ concentration, resulting in a decrease in power output. High-throughput sequencing results revealed a decrease in Geobacter and an increase in Desulfovibrio in response to Ni²⁺ concentrations of 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg/L. Furthermore, the various Ni²⁺ concentrations decreased the expression of EET-related genes. The Ni²⁺-fed MFCs had a higher abundance of the nikR gene than the control group, which was important for Ni²⁺ resistance. This work advances our understanding of Ni²⁺ inhibition on EABs, as well as the concurrent removal of organic matter and Ni²⁺ from wastewater.

Low-Cost RSAC and Adsorption Characteristics in the Removal of Copper Ions from Wastewater

Adsorption is a typical method for treating copper-containing wastewater. Fly ash and steel slag both have a good adsorption performance, and activated clay is added in this study, too. In this study, the performance of residue and soil adsorption composite (RSAC) particles for copper ion adsorption was discussed through the substrate ratio and the influence mechanism, to achieve the win–win effect of industrial waste reuse and copper ion wastewater treatment. The results indicated that adsorption time, dosage, initial copper ion concentration, coexisting ions, and temperature showed different effects on the adsorption, respectively. Additionally, the adsorption kinetic study showed the removal of copper ions by adsorption of RSAC particles was in accordance with quasi-primary kinetic model and quasi-secondary kinetic model. The adsorption thermodynamics study shows the adsorption process of ΔG0 < 0, ΔH0 > 0 and ΔS0 > 0, indicating that the process of copper ion adsorption by RSAC particles was spontaneous, heat-absorbing, and entropy-increasing. The research demonstrates that RSAC particles have a certain adsorption capacity for copper ion.

Impacts of Fishing Vessels on the Heavy Metal Contamination in Sediments: A Case Study of Qianzhen Fishing Port in Southern Taiwan

Routine maintenance of fishing vessels and wastewater discharges are primary sources of heavy metals in fishing ports. Sediment pollution assessment is necessary in fishing port management, including sediment dredging and disposal, sewage treatment facility construction, and pollution source control. In this study, sediment heavy metal contents in Qianzhen Fishing Port, the largest pelagic fishery port in Taiwan, were investigated to assess the contamination levels and related potential ecological risks using multiple sediment pollution indices. Normalization methods were applied to identify the potential sources of heavy metals in fishing port sediments. Results showed that Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cr contents in the sediments of the inner fishing port (averages of 276, 742, 113, and 221 mg/kg, respectively) were 3–5 times greater compared to those along the port entrance and outside, indicating the strong impacts of anthropogenic pollution (EFCu: 5.6–12.5; EFZn: 2.8–4.3; EFPb: 2.4–5.4; EFCr: 1.1–3.2). Copper pollution was more severe, with high maxima contamination factor (CFCu: 15.1–24.8), probably contributed by copper-based antifouling paints used in fishing vessels. The sediments in the inner fishing port are categorized as having considerable ecological risk and toxicity (mERMq: 0.61–0.91; ΣTU: 7.5–11.7) that can potentially cause adverse effects on benthic organisms. Qianzhen Fishing Port sediments can be characterized as high Cu/Fe and Pb/Fe, moderate Zn/Fe, and high total grease content, indicating that the potential sources of heavy metals are primarily antifouling paints and oil spills from the fishing vessels. This study provides valuable data for pollution control, remediation, and environmental management of fishing ports.

Chronic lead exposure induces fatty liver disease associated with the variations of gut microbiota

BACKGROUND

Lead (Pb) has been suggested as an endocrine-disrupting chemical. However, few studies have investigated the association between chronic Pb exposure and fatty liver disease.

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to investigate the association of chronic Pb exposure with fatty liver disease and whether the variations of the gut microbiota involve in the mechanism of the fatty liver disease induced by chronic Pb exposure.

METHODS

We conducted a cross-sectional study of 3066 rural participants in East China. Blood lead level (BLL) was detected, and abdominal ultrasonography was used to diagnose hepatic steatosis. Both the definition of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) were used. Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups and each group was exposed to 0 or 0.05% w/v Pb through drinking water for 28 weeks. The relevant parameters of hepatic lipid metabolism and gut microbiota were analyzed.

RESULTS

In humans, after adjusting for potential confounders, the odds of having NAFLD and MAFLD were significantly increased by 54% and 52% in the participants in the fourth BLL quartile (OR 1.54, 95% CI 1.24, 1.91 and OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.22, 1.89). In the rats, chronic Pb exposure induced the increased visceral fat, hepatic steatosis, and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota, including the decrease of richness, diversity, evenness and phylogenetic diversity of the gut microbiota and the significant alternations of the gut microbiota composition, particularly, the decrease of the relative abundance of Coprococcus and Oscillospira at the genus level.

CONCLUSIONS

Chronic Pb exposure could induce fatty liver disease, which may be associated with the variations of the gut microbiota.

Nutrient Remediation Efficiency of the Sedge Plant (Cyperus alopecuroides Rottb.) to Restore Eutrophic Freshwater Ecosystems

The current study investigated the nutrients removal efficiency of the sedge macrophyte Cyperus alopecuroides to treat water eutrophication, besides evaluating the recycling possibility of the harvested material. Samples of sediment, water, and plant tissues were taken seasonally from six polluted and three unpolluted locations for this investigation. The growth properties of C. alopecuroides showed remarkable seasonal differences in plant density and biomass, with the maximum values (7.1 individual/m2 and 889.6 g/m2, respectively) obtained during summer and the minimum (4.1 individual/m2 and 547.2 g/m2, respectively) in winter. In polluted locations, the above-ground tissues had an efficiency to remove more contents of N and P (11.9 and 3.8 g/m2, respectively) than in unpolluted ones (7.1 and 3.4 g/m2, respectively). The high-nutrient standing stock of C. alopecuroides supports its potential use for nutrient removal from eutrophic wetlands. The tissues of C. alopecuroides had the maximum nutrients removal efficiency to remediate great amounts of Na, K, and N in summer, and Ca, P, and Mg in spring. Above- and below-ground parts of C. alopecuroides from unpolluted locations can be considered as a rough forage for beef cattle, dairy cattle, goats, and sheep. The present study indicated the potential of C. alopecuroides in restoring eutrophic freshwater ecosystems, and, thus, it can be used in similar habitats worldwide.

A review on recent advances in electrodeionization for various environmental applications

The growing contamination of ecosystems necessitates the development of long-term pollution-removal technologies. Electrodeionization, in notably, has newly proven as an efficient method for removing ionic chemicals from polluted waterways. The fact that continuous electrodeionization is a greener technique is most probably the biggest cause for its success. It replaces the toxic chemicals typically required to replenish resins with electric power, therefore eliminating the wastewater involved with resin renewal. In water treatment, electrodeionization solves some of the drawbacks of ion exchange resin beds, particularly ion dumping as beds expire. This comprehensive review explores the theory, principles, and mechanisms of ion movement and separation in an electrodeionization unit. Also, it investigated the construction and usage, notably in removing heavy metal and its current developments in electrodeionization unit. Recent advances in Electrodeionization like polarity reversal, Resin wafer Electrodeionization, membrane free Electrodeionization, and electrostatic shielding with novel materials and hybrid process along with Electrodeionization were addressed. Further advancements are expected in electrodeionization systems that exhibit better efficacy while running at lower costs due to decreased energy usage, rendering them appealing for industrial scale up across a wide range of applications across the world.

Heavy Metal Concentrations of Soil, Rock, and Coal Gangue in the Geological Profile of a Large Open-Pit Coal Mine in China

Risk assessment related to heavy metals in mining areas is crucial to ensuring the sustainable development of regional ecosystems and protecting human health. However, almost all research on the impact of mining activities on environmental quality entails field monitoring of surface soils or soil profiles. Here, to compare the variety of heavy metal concentrations in the geological profile, 39 samples (including soil, rock, and coal gangue) were collected and analyzed from hundreds of meters underground in the Pingshuo coal mine (Anjialing coal mine, Antaibao coal mine, and Donglutian coal mine), which is the largest open-pit coal mine in China. The mean heavy metal concentrations of Cd, Hg, As, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, and Ni in soils were 0.15 mg/kg, 0.02 mg/kg, 13.70 mg/kg, 27.12 mg/kg, 70.89 mg/kg, 26.10 mg/kg, 79.88 mg/kg, and 37.68 mg/kg, respectively; most of these metals were more concentrated in the soil samples than in the rock and coal gangue samples. A potential ecological risk assessment indicated that As, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, and Ni in all samples showed low risk, while the ecological risk degrees of Cd and Hg were higher and contributed most to the total risk index (RI). The highest E_r^i value (92.94) for Cd was found in rock samples, contributing to approximately 55.18% of the to tal RI. For Hg, four rock sampling sites had the highest E_r^i values (427.70, 270.78, 198.96, and 188.70), contributing approximately 68.36–88.07% of the total RI. Ranked after soil (0.15 mg/kg), limestone and shale showed high mean Cd concentrations (both 0.13 mg/kg). The highest mean concentration was found in coal gangue samples (0.1 mg/kg). Compared with the other types of samples, the mean concentrations of Cr, Cu, and Ni in soils, limestone, and mudstone were relatively higher. At different sites, heavy metal concentrations varied greatly at different depths, owing to diverse sample types and rock types. Correlations between heavy metals and soil nutrients indicated that N and P were closely correlated with heavy metals. Comparing the proportions of different heavy metals in various types of samples showed that heavy metals in soils were extremely similar to those in limestone, mudstone, and shale, implying that soils might indirectly inherit their features from their parent material.

Isotopic Assessment of Groundwater Salinity: A Case Study of the Southwest (SW) Region of Punjab, India

In recent decades, due to rapid increases in water demand and greater usage of water for irrigation from surface canals, waterlogging problems have been created in the southwest zone of Punjab, coupled with a stagnation in saline zone formation due to salinity ingression. To understand these salinity issues, the present study has been conducted in three districts (Muktsar, Fazilka, and Faridkot) of Punjab to understand the root cause. To this end, groundwater samples were collected from 142 piezometers developed at 40 sites. Electrical conductivity (EC) observations were taken in the field, and collected samples were analyzed for isotopes in the laboratory. Results found that salinity in groundwater arises from the combination of evaporation enrichment and salt dissolution. The dissolved salts may be acquired due to salts from aquifer materials or salts from surface soils dissolving and leaching down with the recharging water. Besides, the zone of interaction is mapped using stable isotopic composition. The study suggests that zone of interaction between aquifers can be effectively used in groundwater augmentation, management, and contamination control at regional and/or global scales to curb water demand in the future.

Removal of Copper, Nickel, and Zinc Ions from an Aqueous Solution through Electrochemical and Nanofiltration Membrane Processes

Heavy metal contamination in water is a major health concern, directly related to rapid growth in industrialization, urbanization, and modernization in agriculture. Keeping this in view, the present study has attempted to develop models for the process optimization of nanofiltration (NF) membrane and electrocoagulation (EC) processes for the removal of copper, nickel, and zinc from an aqueous solution, employing the response surface methodology (RSM). The variable factors were feed concentration, temperature, pH, and pressure for the NF membrane process; and time, solution pH, feed concentration, and current for the EC process, respectively. The central composite design (CCD), the most commonly used fractional factorial design, was employed to plan the experiments. RSM models were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). For the NF membrane, the rejection of Zn, Ni, and Cu was observed as 98.64%, 90.54%, and 99.79% respectively; while the removal of these through the EC process was observed as 99.81%, 99.99%, and 99.98%, respectively. The above findings and a comparison with the conventional precipitation and adsorption processes apparently indicate an advantage in employing the NF and EC processes. Further, between the two, the EC process emerged as more efficient than the NF process for the removal of the studied metals.

Hydrological Effects of Prefabricated Permeable Pavements on Parking Lots

Permeable pavements can infiltrate and reduce stormwater runoff in parking lots, but issues around long construction periods and proper maintenance still required proper research and further understanding. The application of precast concrete can help to solve this. In this study, precast concrete components were applied to the design of permeable pavements to form prefabricated permeable pavements. The laboratory study is one of the first to examine the hydrological effect of prefabricated pervious pavements in parking lots. Four kinds of permeable pavements were designed and manufactured. These had different materials (natural sand-gravel, medium sand) which comprised the leveling layer or different assembly forms of precast concrete at the base. Three scenarios of rainfall intensity (0.5, 1, and 2 mm/min) and three rainfall intervals (one, three, and seven days) were simulated using rainfall simulators. The initial runoff time, runoff coefficient, and runoff control rate of each permeable pavement were investigated during the process of simulating. Results showed that the initial runoff time was no earlier than 42 min, the maximum runoff coefficient was 0.52, and the minimum runoff control rate was 47.7% within the rainfall intensity of 2 mm/min. The initial runoff time of each permeable pavement was no earlier than 36 min when the rainfall interval was one day, whereas, the maximum runoff coefficient was 0.64, and the average runoff control rate was 41.5%. The leveling layer material had a greater impact on the hydrological effect of permeable pavements, while the assembly form of precast concrete had no significant effect. Compared with natural sand-gravel, when the leveling layer was medium sand, the runoff generation was advanced by 4.5–7.8 min under different rainfall intensities, and 7–10 min under different rainfall intervals. The maximum runoff coefficient increased with about 14.6% when the rainfall interval was one day. Among four kinds of permeable pavements, the type I permeable pavement had the best runoff regulation performance. The results revealed that all prefabricated permeable pavements used in this study had good runoff control performance, and this design idea proved to be an alternative for the future design of permeable pavements.

Applications of Biochar and Modified Biochar in Heavy Metal Contaminated Soil: A Descriptive Review

Given that the problem of contaminated soil continues to grow, the development of effective control and remediation measures has become imperative, especially for heavy-metal-contaminated soil. Biochar and modified biochar are eco-friendly and cost-effective remediation materials that are widely used in the remediation of contaminated soil. This review provides an overview of the different raw materials used in the preparation of biochar as well as the modification of biochar using various synthesis methods, highlighting their differences and providing recommendations for biochar and modified biochar as applied toward ameliorating pollution in soil contaminated by heavy metals. We also explore the effects of the physicochemical properties of raw materials, pyrolysis temperature, additives, and modification methods on the properties of the resulting biochar and modified biochar, and systematically present the types of soil and operating factors for repair. Moreover, the mechanisms involved in remediation of heavy-metal-contaminated soil by biochar and modified biochar are outlined in detail, and include adsorption, complexation, precipitation, ion exchange, and electrostatic attractions. Finally, the corresponding monitoring technologies after remediation are illustrated. Future directions for studies on biochar and modified biochar in the remediation of contaminated soil are also proposed to support the development of green environmental protection materials, simple preparation methods, and effective follow-up monitoring techniques.

Myco-remediation: A mechanistic understanding of contaminants alleviation from natural environment and future prospect

Industrialization and modernization of agricultural systems contaminated lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere of the Earth. Sustainable remediation of contamination is essential for environmental sustainability. Myco-remediation is proposed to be a green, economical, and efficient technology over conventional remediation technologies to combat escalating pollution problems at a global scale. Fungi can perform remediation of pollutants through several mechanisms like biosorption, precipitation, biotransformation, and sequestration. Myco-remediation significantly removes or degrades metal metals, persistent organic pollutants, and other emerging pollutants. The current review highlights the species-specific remediation potential, influencing factors, genetic and molecular control mechanism, applicability merits to enhance the bioremediation efficiency. Structure and composition of fungal cell wall is crucial for immobilization of toxic pollutants and a subtle change on fungal cell wall structure may significantly affect the immobilization efficiency. The utilization protocol and applicability of enzyme engineering and myco-nanotechnology to enhance the bioremediation efficiency of any potential fungus was proposed. It is advocated that the association of hyper-accumulator plants with plant growth-promoting fungi could help in an effective cleanup strategy for the alleviation of persistent soil pollutants. The functions, activity, and regulation of fungal enzymes in myco-remediation practices required further research to enhance the myco-remediation potential. Study of the biotransformation mechanisms and risk assessment of the products formed are required to minimize environmental pollution. Recent advancements in molecular "Omic techniques"and biotechnological tools can further upgrade myco-remediation efficiency in polluted soils and water.

Prenatal exposure to chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) in a sample of Iranian pregnant women: urinary levels and associated socio-demographic and lifestyle factors

Heavy metals have been well documented to pose detrimental health effects. The current study aimed to measure the concentration of chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) in urinary samples of Iranian pregnant females and determine their potential correlations with different lifestyle variables. The study was conducted in 2019-2020 in Isfahan, Iran, and the urine samples were collected from 140 pregnant women. The concentrations of Cr and Ni in the urinary samples were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Data on socio-demographic characteristics, use of cleaning products, and lifestyle profiles was collected by validated questionnaires. Cr and Ni were detected in 100% of urinary samples with the mean concentration of 4.1±3.4 and 7.5±4.8 μg/g creatinine, respectively. Significant associations were found between the mean concentration of Cr and Ni with using cooking utensils made of copper, aluminum, Teflon, steel, and enameled, as well as with cosmetic use, and second-hand smoking exposure during pregnancy. The results also showed that the mean urinary Ni and Cr concentrations were significantly different among individuals who consumed seafood and canned food (p-value <0.05). Furthermore, the mean of urinary Cr and Ni concentrations at high levels of physical activity and scratched utensils used was significantly different from the other categories (p-value <0.05). According to our findings, the lifestyle determinants and cosmetic products had superiority to socio-demographic characteristics in predicting urinary heavy metals in Iranian pregnant women.

Insight into biosorption of heavy metals by extracellular polymer substances and the improvement of the efficacy: a review

Heavy metals are continuously released into aquatic environments in which they accumulate. This phenomenon endangers public health because heavy metals accumulate along the food chain. However, conventional remediation methods are inefficient, expensive and yield toxic intermediate products, which adversely affect the environment. The discovery of green bio-adsorbents such as microbial extracellular polymer substance (EPS) has quickly attracted considerable worldwide attention because of their low cost, high removal efficiency of heavy metals and industrial availability. Hence, this review considers the sources, hazards and treatment methods of heavy metals pollution, particularly the biosorption mechanism of EPS to heavy metals and the influencing factors of the bio-adsorption process, which are significant in the efficient removal of heavy metals-containing wastewater treatment. This review also focuses on strengthening the process of EPS adsorption of heavy metals, which can further contribute to heavy metals removal. Finally, it has been proposed that improving the yield, stability, selectivity and recoverability of EPS is the key direction of further research.

Alleviation of adverse effects of nickel on growth and concentration of copper and manganese in wheat through foliar application of ascorbic acid

We investigated the role of ascorbic acid (AsA) to alleviate nickel (Ni) induced adverse effects on growth and concentration of Ni, copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) in hydroponically grown wheat varieties viz. Galaxy, Punjab-2011, and FSD-08. Plants were exposed to five levels of Ni viz. 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mg L^-1. After 1 week, AsA (1 mM) was sprayed onto the Ni-stressed plants. FSD-08 produced the maximum SDW with and without AsA compared to other varieties. FSD-08, Galaxy, and Punjab-2011 witnessed 2.61-, 2.83-, and 7.5-fold increases in SDW with AsA, respectively. Wheat plants contained the maximum Ni in shoots and roots with a Ni level of 20 mg L^-1 irrespective of varieties. Nickel in shoots decreased with AsA witnessing 13, 12, and 10% decrease in FSD-08, Punjab-2011, and Galaxy, respectively. Nickel in roots of FSD-08 decreased by 18% while increased by 3.34-fold and 3.50-fold in Galaxy and Punjab-2011, respectively with AsA. Nickel decreased Cu in shoot and Mn in shoot and root while Cu in roots of all wheat varieties increased. It was concluded that AsA improved the growth of Ni-stressed and FSD-08 performed better by maintaining good growth and less Ni in shoots compared to other varieties.

Modeling the relationship between carbon emissions and environmental sustainability during COVID-19: a new evidence from asymmetric ARDL cointegration approach

The study aims to examine the CO₂ emissions by considering the implication of COVID-19 under strict lockdown in India. The nonlinear (asymmetric) relationship is investigated between CO₂ emission and COVID-19 with its specific determinants. The positive and negative asymmetries of COVID-19 determinants are also captured by using econometric techniques. The daily data series of CO₂ emission, new confirmed cases, confirmed deaths, and lockdown as dummy variables from January 30, 2020, to December 1, 2020, for India is analyzed by employing the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag model. This research revealed a significant nonlinear relationship between CO₂ emission and COVID-19. The bound test and asymmetric coefficients are confirmed by the variables' long- and short-run relationships. The dynamic multiplier graphs present that India's strict lockdown due to the rapid increase in COVID-19 patients significantly reduces toxic gas emissions, especially CO₂ emissions. This asymmetric relationship has been proficiently declared that unhealthy public routine, extra traffic, and unhygienic gases released in the air become the reason for environmental destruction. The lockdown is practically imposed for specific periods and reasons, contributing to reducing toxic emissions, but it is not a permanent solution for environmental sustainability. The government of India, policymakers, and environmentalists should make people aware of unhealthy and environmentally envying activities and policies and long-term applicable strategies should be designed to upgrade the environment's quality.
