Abstract
Encapsulation techniques are generally used to preserve the volatile compounds of essential oils. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of process variables on the microencapsulation of marjoram essential oil (MEO) (Origanum majorana L.) by ionic gelation. The effect of sodium alginate concentration (0.5-2 g/100 mL), emulsifier concentration (0.5-2 g/100 mL whey protein isolate (WPI)), and cationic bath concentration (0.05-0.3 mol/L CaCl2) on the emulsions and beads properties were investigated, according to a rotatable central composite design. MEO chemical composition and antimicrobial activity were assessed. Emulsions were characterized for droplet size and viscosity, while the particles were analyzed for encapsulation efficiency, size and circularity, and morphology. High concentrations of alginate and WPI intensified the porous structure of the beads, reducing droplet mean diameter and encapsulation efficiency. High alginate concentrations also increased emulsion viscosity, affecting positively beads' circularity. The intermediate concentration of sodium alginate (1.25 g/100 mL), WPI (1.25 g/100 mL), and CaCl2 (0.175 mol/L) were selected as the most appropriate conditions to produce beads with satisfactory circularity and high encapsulation efficiency.

Abstract
Diffusion methods, including agar disk-diffusion and agar well-diffusion, as well as dilution methods such as broth and agar dilution, are frequently employed to evaluate the antimicrobial capacity of extracts and essential oils (EOs) derived from Origanum L., Syzygium aromaticum, and Citrus L. The results are reported as inhibition diameters (IDs) and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), respectively. In order to investigate potential sources of variability in antimicrobial susceptibility testing results and to assess whether a correlation exists between ID and MIC measurements, meta-analytical regression models were built using in vitro data obtained through a systematic literature search. The pooled ID models revealed varied bacterial susceptibilities to the extracts and in some cases, the plant species and methodology utilised impacted the measurements obtained (p < 0.05). Lemon and orange extracts were found to be most effective against E. coli (24.4 ± 1.21 and 16.5 ± 0.84 mm, respectively), while oregano extracts exhibited the highest level of effectiveness against B. cereus (22.3 ± 1.73 mm). Clove extracts were observed to be most effective against B. cereus and demonstrated the general trend that the well-diffusion method tends to produce higher ID (20.5 ± 1.36 mm) than the disk-diffusion method (16.3 ± 1.40 mm). Although the plant species had an impact on MIC, there is no evidence to suggest that the methodology employed had an effect on MIC (p > 0.05). The ID–MIC model revealed an inverse correlation (R2 = 47.7%) and highlighted the fact that the extract dose highly modulated the relationship (p < 0.0001). The findings of this study encourage the use of extracts and EOs derived from Origanum, Syzygium aromaticum, and Citrus to prevent bacterial growth. Additionally, this study underscores several variables that can impact ID and MIC measurements and expose the correlation between the two types of results.

Abstract
Origanum majorana is a medicinal and aromatic plant that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It is cultivated in several parts of the world and, due to its splendid aroma and taste, is widely used for culinary purposes and in perfumes. The essential oil of the plant, to which is attributed its aroma, contains many secondary metabolites with valuable biological activity. One of them is the pesticide activity, which has attracted much interest. Given the necessity of replacing synthetic pesticides, essential oils are studied in an attempt to find naturally derived products. Thus, the aim of this review paper is to discuss the chemical profile of O. majorana essential oil and to present data regarding its insecticidal, repellent and fumigant activity. Data were collected from 1992 to 2022. Databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and Scopus, were used for the research, and keywords, including O. majorana, sweet marjoram, essential oil, volatiles, pesticide, insecticide and repellent activity, were used. The results of this review paper indicate that O. majorana essential oil can be an alternative agent to manage pests. However, still, much research should be conducted to evaluate its toxicity against beneficial insects and to ensure its safety for human health.

Abstract
The volatiles chemical composition and biological attributes of coriander
(Coriandrum sativum L.) leaves essential oil obtained by
two extraction techniques namely supercritical fluid extraction and
hydro-distillation is appraised. The coriander essential oil yield (.12%) by
hydro-distillation was slightly higher than that of supercritical fluid
extraction (.09%). The physico-chemical variables of the essential oil obtained
from both the techniques varied in significantly (P < .05). GC-MS analysis
identified 23 different components in supercritical fluid extracted oil and 18
components in hydro-distilled essential oil having linalool as major component
(51.32% and 61.78%, respectively) followed by phytol (12.71%). The oil recovered
by supercritical fluid extraction exhibited greater DPPH radical scavenging
activity as well as reducing power as compared to the essential oil obtained by
hydro-distillation technique along with a stronger biofilm inhibition and least
hemolysis. The results of antimicrobial activity revealed that super critical
fluid extracted essential oil has potent antifungal and antibacterial activity
against P. multocida and A alternata, whereas
hydro-distilled essential oil displayed better antimicrobial potential against
E coli and A niger. Overall, these results
depict that supercritical fluid extraction is superior than hydro-distillation
with regard to isolation of better-quality coriander essential oil for
nutra-pharmaceutical developments.

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the chemical constituents of Origanum majorana L. essential oils (EOs) that originate in Nepal, as well as their biological activities, antioxidant properties, and enantiomeric compositions. The EOs were extracted by the hydro-distillation method using a Clevenger-type apparatus and their chemical compositions were determined through gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Chiral GC-MS was used to evaluate the enantiomeric compositions of EOs. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the essential oils were determined by the micro-broth dilution method, and the antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging assay and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). GC-MS analysis showed the presence of 50 and 41 compounds in the EO samples, (S1) and (S2), respectively, representing the Kathmandu and Bhaktapur districts. The oxygenated monoterpenoids, along with terpinen-4-ol, were predominant constituents in both EO samples. However, the EOs from two locations showed some variations in their major components. The chiral terpenoids for two EO samples of marjoram have also been reported in this study in an elaborative way for the first time in accordance with the literature review. A hierarchical cluster analysis based on the compositions of EOs with 50 compositions reported in the literature revealed at least 5 different chemotypes of marjoram oil. The antioxidant activity for the sample (S2) was found to be relatively moderate, with an IC50 value of 225.61 ± 0.05 μg/mL and an EC50 value of 372.72 ± 0.84 µg/mL, as compared to the standard used. Furthermore, with an MIC value of 78.1 µg/mL, the EO from sample (S2) demonstrated effective antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. Moreover, both samples displayed considerable antimicrobial activity. The results suggest that EOs of Origanum majorana possess some noteworthy antimicrobial properties as well as antioxidant activity, and hence can be used as a natural preservative ingredient in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Since foodborne diseases are often considered as one of the biggest public health threats worldwide, effective preservation strategies are needed to inhibit the growth of undesirable microorganisms in food commodities. Up to now, several techniques have been adopted for the production of safe and high-quality products. Although the traditional methods can improve the reliability, safety, and shelf-life of food, some of them cannot be applied without rising health concerns. Thereby, the addition of various phytochemicals has gained much attention during the last decades, especially for meat products that may be contaminated with pathogenic and spoilage organisms. Thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.), as an important medicinal and culinary herb, is a promising source of bioactive compounds that have a great impact on the microbiological stability of meat by suppressing the undesirable microflora. However, the use of these antimicrobials is still facing difficulties due to their aromatic properties and variable efficacy against targeted species. In this paper, we provide an overview on the potential effects of thyme essential oil (EO) and thymol as bio-preservative agents in meat products. Furthermore, this paper provides insights into the limitations and current challenges of the addition of EOs and their constituents to meat commodities and suggests viable solutions that can improve the applicability of these phytochemicals.

Abstract
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a widespread androgenic illness influencing elderly men. It is distinguished by prostatic epithelial and stromal muscle cell proliferation. Inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis have all been interrelated to the development of BPH. Marjoram (Origanum majorana L.) is a herb with reported antiproliferative, proapoptotic, and antioxidative properties, which have not yet been studied in relation to BPH. Consequently, in this work, an ethanolic extract of O. majorana was prepared in two doses (250 and 500 mg/kg/day) to be injected into castrated rats after induction of a testosterone-BPH model. Testosterone propionate (TP) was subcutaneously injected (0.5 mg/kg/day) for one week after castration to induce BPH. Forty adult Wistar male rats were randomly allocated into five groups: control, BPH model, high and low O. majorana doses (250, 500 mg/kg/day), and finasteride (FN) (0.8 mg/kg/day) as a positive control. Treatment was continued with drugs/normal saline for 28 days. Rat’s body and prostate were weighed, prostate index (PI) and % of prostate growth inhibition were calculated, serum dihydrotestosterone (DHT), prostatic content of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and malondialdehyde (MDA), DN damage, histopathological changes, immune expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), caspase-3, α-SMA, and TGF-β1 were assessed. In addition, molecular quantitative PCR and ELISA analyses were performed to identify the expression of mRNAs and related proteins of both caspase-3 and TGF-β1 in prostate tissue from O. majorana-treated and untreated groups. Rats with BPH had significantly higher prostate weights and PI, higher DHT, DNA damage (8-hydroxyguanine, 8-OH-dG), and MDA levels with prominent PCNA, α-SMA, and TGF-β expression, but lower SOD, CAT, and TAC activity and caspase-3 expression. O. majorana (250 and 500 mg/kg/day)-treated groups revealed a decrease in prostate weights and PI, lower levels of DHT, suppressed oxidative stress, reduced tissue proliferation and fibrosis, and restored antioxidant and proapoptotic activity. Additionally, quantitative PCR and ELISA analysis showed that treatment with O. majorana significantly upregulated the expression of caspase-3 and downregulated the expression of TGF-β in prostate tissues of BPH rats. The data were confirmed by the immunohistological reactivity of these targeted markers in the prostate tissues. These effects were more significant with O. majorana 500 mg/mL/rat. In conclusion, the current study indicates the efficient use of O. majorana in the treatment of testosterone-induced BPH through its antiproliferative, proapoptotic, and antioxidative mechanisms.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori can cause chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric carcinoma. This study compares chemical composition and anti-H. pylori activity of mandarin leaves and marjoram herb essential oils, and their combined oil. GC/MS analysis of mandarin oil revealed six compounds (100% identified), mainly methyl-N-methyl anthranilate (89.93%), and 13 compounds (93.52% identified) of marjoram oil, mainly trans-sabinene hydrate (36.11%), terpinen-4-ol (17.97%), linalyl acetate (9.18%), and caryophyllene oxide (8.25%)). Marjoram oil (MIC = 11.40 µg/mL) demonstrated higher activity than mandarin oil (MIC = 31.25 µg/mL). The combined oil showed a synergistic effect at MIC of 1.95 µg/mL (same as clarithromycin). In-silico molecular docking on H. pylori urease, CagA, pharmacokinetic and toxicity studies were performed on major compounds from both oils. The best scores were for caryophyllene oxide then linalyl acetate and methyl-N-methyl anthranilate. Compounds revealed high safety and desirable properties. The combined oil can be an excellent candidate to manage H. pylori.

Abstract
This study first-ever tested the impact of active packaging paper coated with cationic starch containing Origanum majorana L. essential oil with 69.26% carvacrol polyphenol on the physical, chemical, and microbiological quality of minced beef stored at +4 °C for 0, 6, and 12 days. An analysis of electron scanning microscopy and infrared spectroscopy showed origanum oil entrapment on paper. Meat samples packaged without origanum oil at 6th and 12th days of storage were unfit for consumption. In contrary, origanum oil significantly reduced microbial counts by 2.5 log 10 CFU/g, the peroxide value by 22%, lipid oxidation by 22, the pH-dependent meat spoilage value by 27%, dry matter losses by 7%, and antioxidant activity losses by 40% and restored color and odor reductions. Origanum oil extended the shelf-life of minced beef up to the 6th day of cold storage with no negative effect on meat color and odor.

Abstract
Tea tree oil (TTO) exhibits a potent antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activity and is commonly used in skincare products. However, it is not clear whether TTO can protect gut barrier damage in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Herein, we report the impact of terpinen-4-ol (TER, the primary constituent of TTO), on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intestinal epithelial cell barrier function impairment in intestinal porcine epithelial cell lines (IPEC-J2) and dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced IBD in mice. TER protected against LPS-induced damage in IPEC-J2 cells in vitro and attenuated DSS-induced colitis in vivo. Added TER promoted the tight junction (TJ) proteins expressing in vitro and in vivo and attenuated the LPS-induced upregulation of ERK phosphorylation in IPEC-J2 cells. However, when an inhibitor of ERK phosphorylation was added, TER did not promote the expression of TJ protein, denoting that the ERK signaling pathway mediates the upregulation of TJ proteins. Our data may propose the potential application of TER in treating IBD.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate and compare in detail both the antifungal activity in vitro (with planktonic and biofilm-forming cells) and the essential oil composition (EOs) of naturally growing (OMN) and cultivated (OMC) samples of Origanum majorana L. (marjoram). The essential oil composition was analyzed using GC-MS. The major constituent of both EOs was carvacrol: 75.3% and 84%, respectively. Both essential oils showed high antifungal activity against clinically relevant Candida spp. with IC50 and IC90 less than or equal to 0.5 µg mL−1 and inhibition of biofilm with a concentration of 3.5 µg mL−1 or less. Cultivated marjoram oil showed higher anti-biofilm activity against C. albicans. In addition, OMC showed greater inhibition of germ-tube formation (inhibition by 83% in Spider media), the major virulence factor of C. albicans at a concentration of 0.125 µg mL−1. Both EOs modulated cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH), but OMN proved to be more active with a CSH% up to 58.41%. The efficacy of O. majorana EOs was also investigated using Galleria mellonella larvae as a model. It was observed that while the larvae of the control group infected with C. albicans (6.0 × 108 cells) and not receiving treatment died in the controls carried out after 24 h, all larvae in the infected treatment group survived at the end of the 96th hour. When the treatment group and the infected group were evaluated in terms of vital activities, it was found that the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The infection of larvae with C. albicans and the effects of O. majorana EOs on the hemocytes of the model organism and the blastospores of C. albicans were evaluated by light microscopy on slides stained with Giemsa. Cytological examination in the treatment group revealed that C. albicans blastospores were phagocytosed and morphological changes occurred in hemocytes. Our results indicated that the essential oil of both samples showed strong antifungal activities against planktonic and biofilm-forming C. albicans cells and also had an influence on putative virulence factors (germ-tube formation and its length and on CSH).

Abstract
In the search of new alternatives for weed control, spices appear as an option with great potential. They are rich in bioactive natural products and edible, which might minimize toxicity hazard. Marjoram (Origanum majorana L.) is an aromatic herb that has been widely employed as a seasoning herb in Mediterranean countries. Although marjoram boasts a plethora of therapeutic properties (painkiller, antibiotic, treatment for intestinal disorders, etc.), the potential for its extracts for weed control is still to be more thoroughly explored. In order to determine their phytotoxic potential, marjoram leaves were subjected to different bioguided extraction processes, using water, ethyl acetate, acetone or methanol. The most active extract (acetone) was sequentially fractionated to identify its most active compounds. This fractionation led to the isolation and identification of 25 compounds that were classified as monoterpenes, diterpenes or flavonoids. Among them, a new compound named majoradiol and several compounds are described in marjoram for the first time. The phytotoxicity of the major compounds to etiolated wheat coleoptiles was compared against that of the commercial herbicide (Logran®), with similar or higher activity in some cases. These results confirm the extraordinary potential of the extracts from this edible plant to develop safer and more environmentally friendly herbicides.

Abstract
p-cymene also known as p-cymol or p-isopropyltoluene is an alkyl-substituted aromatic compound naturally occurring in essential oils (EOs) of various aromatic plants, including the genus of Artemisia, Protium, Origanum, and Thymus. It is related to the family of terpenes, especially monocyclic monoterpenes. p-cymene is also present in several food-based plants such as carrots, orange juice, grapefruit, tangerine, raspberries and several spices. Numerous studies have demonstrated the pharmacological properties of the monoterpenes p-cymene, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, antidiabetic, antiviral, antitumor, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. The p-cymene has also been reported to act as an analgesic, antinociceptive, immunomodulatory, vasorelaxant and neuroprotective agent. Its anticancer effects are related to some mechanisms such as the inhibition of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. In this review, we critically highlighted the in vitro and in vivo pharmacological properties of the p-cymene molecule, providing insight into its mechanisms of action and potential applications in drug discovery. In light of this finding, in-depth in vivo studies are strongly required to validate the safety and beneficial effects of the p-cymene molecule in human healthcare and industrial applications as a potential source of drug discovery.

Abstract
Introduction:
Dryopteris marginalis L. is a local plant in Bangladesh which is widely
used as folk medicine.
Materials and Methods:
In this study, the chemical composition of essential oil of D. marginalis L.
as well as the antioxidant activity, antibacterial activity and total phenolic content of various organic
extracts were analyzed. The gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis was used to identify
the chemical compositions. The antibacterial activity of different extracts of Dryopteris marginalis
was examined against three gram-negative bacteria and two gram-positive bacteria. The antibacterial
activity of different extracts was investigated using the disc diffusion method and minimum inhibitory
concentration showing important antibacterial activity and was measured by using the broth
dilution method.
Results:
The antioxidant activity was determined by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)
assay and superoxide radical scavenging assay. The total phenolic portion of the extracts was ascertained
by Folin-Ciocalteu in an alkaline medium. Twenty-two volatile compounds were identified
from the essential oil. The methanol extract exhibited a significant inhibitory effect which was close
to the value of standard antibiotic (Streptomycin). The zones of inhibition of different organic extracts
against the tested bacteria were found in the range of (7-15) mm and the Minimum Inhibitory
Concentrations (MIC) were recorded (15.62-1000) μg/ml. The antioxidant activity of D. marginalis
was (82.13+1.2) % and (59.21+0.45) % highest activity with DPPH and superoxide radical scavenging
assay, respectively.
Conclusion:
The methanol extract showed the highest (147.43+3.1) mg/g GAE of total phenolic content.
The extracts and essential oil of D. marginalis showing strong antibacterial activity can be considered
as a potential source of natural medicine and the ingredient of modern therapeutic agents.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to evaluate in vitro individual and combined antifungal activity of propolis extract (PE) and oregano essential oil (OEO) against Penicillium allii, causal agent of blue mould disease. The chemical characterization of both products was also included. METHODS AND RESULTS Chromatographic analysis of PE and OEO confirmed the presence of bioactive compounds. The antifungal susceptibility assays showed that PE and OEO were highly active against the mycelial growth and conidial germination of P. allii. PE and OEO MICs were 12·5 and 1·5 μl ml-1 , respectively. The MFCs of these products were 50 and 3·1 μl ml-1 , respectively. PE acted mainly through diffusion, while OEO acted by a mixed contribution of vapour and diffusion. Synergism and additive effect between both products were found in some combination ratios. CONCLUSION PE and OEO, both natural products with different chemical composition, have a strong antifungal activity against P. allii and show a favourable interaction causing synergism. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The results of this study indicated the potential use of PE combined with OEO as a non-conventional strategy towards the formulation of a biofungicide to control blue mould disease in garlic seed-cloves.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Origanum majorana L., is an aromatic and medicinal plant distributed in different parts of Mediterranean countries. This species is widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of many diseases such as allergies, hypertension, respiratory infections, diabetes, stomach pain, and intestinal antispasmodic. AIM OF THE REVIEW This work reports previous studies on O. majorana concerning its taxonomy, botanical description, geographical distribution, traditional use, bioactive compounds, toxicology, and biological effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS Different scientific data bases such as Web of Science, Scopus, Wiley Online, SciFinder, Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink were consulted to collect data about O. majorana. The presented data emphasis bioactive compounds, traditional uses, toxicological investigations, and biological activities of O. majorana. RESULTS The findings of this work marked an important correlation between the traditional use of O. majorana as an anti-allergic, antihypertensive, anti-diabetic agent, and its biological effects. Indeed, pharmacological investigations showed that essential oils and extracts from O. majorana exhibit different biological properties, particularly; antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, antiparasitic, antidiabetic, anticancer, nephrotoxicity protective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-pyretic, hepatoprotective, and antimutagenic effects. Toxicological evaluation confirmed the safety and innocuity of this species and supported its medicinal uses. Several bioactive compounds belonging to different chemical family such as terpenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic acids were also identified in O. majorana. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that the pharmacological properties of O. majorana confirm its traditional uses. Indeed, O. majorana essential oils showed remarkable antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, nephroprotective, and hepatoprotective activities. However, further investigations regarding the evaluation of molecular mechanisms of identified compounds against human cancer cell lines, inflammatory process, and microbial infections are needed to validate pharmacodynamic targets. The toxicological investigation of O. Majorana confirmed its safety and therefore encouraged pharmacokinetic evaluation tests to validate its bioavailability.

Abstract
Simple Summary The termite Microcerotermes eugnathus Silvestri (Blattodea, Termitidae) showed structural damage in Bir al-Shaghala cemeteries located in the oasis of Dakhla, Egypt. The mud tubes of this termite spread inside and over the mural painted floors of the tombs. Extracts from Lavandula latifolia, Origanum vulgare, and Syzygium aromaticum were tested for their anti-termitic activity and compared with the bio-insecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Protecto 9.4% WP) and Dursban (Chlorpyrifos 48%). The bioassay experimental showed that the extracts have low activity against M. eugnathus compared to Protecto and Dursban, but the extract from O. vulgare showed promising natural termiticides. Abstract A trend towards environmentally friendly chemicals for use in termite management has been occurring globally. This study examined three naturally occurring plant extracts from Lavandula latifolia (Spike lavender), Origanum vulgare (Marjorum), and Syzygium aromaticum (Clove) against the termite Microcerotermes eugnathus. Plant extract results were compared to two commercially used termite pesticides, the bio-insecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Protecto 9.4% WP) and Dursban (Chlorpyrifos 48%). Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was used to identify the main compounds in the three plant extracts. The main compounds in Lavandula Latifolia were linalool (21.49%), lavandulol (12.77%), β-terpinyl acetate (10.49%), and camphor (9.30%). Origanum vulgare extract contained thymol (14.64%), m-cymene (10.63%), linalool (6.75%), and terpinen-4-ol (6.92%) as main compounds. Syzygium aromaticum contained eugenol (99.16%) as the most abundant identified compound. The extract of O. vulgare caused the highest termite death rate, with an LC50 of 770.67 mg/L. Exposure to lavender extract showed a high death rate with an LC50 of 1086.39 mg/L. Clove extract did not show significant insecticidal activity with an LC50 > 2000 mg/L. Significant termiticide effects were found, with LC50 values of 84.09 and 269.98 mg/L for soldiers and workers under the application of Dursban and Protecto, respectively. The LC50 values reported for nymphs were <120, <164.5, and 627.87 mg/L after exposure to Dursban, Protecto, and O. vulgare extract, respectively. The results of the study show that some of the extracts have low toxicity compared to the bioagent and Dursban, and may show promise as natural termiticides, particularly as extracts from O. vulgare.

Chemical composition, antioxidant capacity and antibacterial action of five Moroccan essential oils against Listeria monocytogenes and different serotypes of Salmonella enterica. Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) obtained from aromatic plants are rich in natural components with interesting antimicrobial effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition of EOs extracted from Origanum majorana (OM-EO), Mentha suaveolens (MS-EO), Rosmarinus officinalis (RO-EO), Salvia officinalis (SO-EO) and Mentha pulegium (MP-EO). Their antioxidant properties and antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes and different serotypes of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica were also studied. The EOs were extracted from plants by hydro-distillation and their chemical composition was determined by GC-MS. Terpinen-4-ol, 1,8-Cineole, Camphor, Limonene and Cinerone were the main chemical components found in OM-EO, RO-EO, SO-EO, MP-EO and MS-EO, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, Limonene and Cinerone were reported, for the first time, as the major components of MP-EO and MS-EO. Moreover, our results showed that MS-EO had the best antioxidant activity with an IC50 of 0.78 ± 0.05 mg/mL, EC50 of 1.53 ± 0.07 mg/mL, and RC50 of 0.98 ± 0.04 mg/mL, and the higher antibacterial activity using microdilution broth method with MIC of 0.5% for Salmonella and 0.25% for L. monocytogenes, while OM-EO had the best antibacterial activity using disc diffusion method (inhibition diameters ranged between 15.3 ± 0.3 mm and 18.5 ± 0.3 mm for Salmonella and between 20.1 ± 0.2 mm and 25.4 ± 0.4 mm for L. monocytogenes). However, OM-EO and MS-EO present the higher percentage of sub-lethally injured cells against S. enterica (5.50 ± 0.11%) and L. monocytogenes (5.23 ± 0.07%), respectively. From this study, we can conclude that the investigated EOs are rich in components with interesting antibacterial activity and they could be applied in food preparations as natural preservatives to extend the shelf life of food products and to inhibit the growth of food-borne pathogens.

Abstract
This study evaluated the larvicidal activity of Origanum majorana Linnaeus essential oil, identified the chemical composition, evaluated the antimicrobial, cytotoxic and antioxidant potential. The larvicidal activity was evaluated against larvae of the third stage of Aedes aegypti Linaeus, whereas the chemical composition was identified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometer, the antimicrobial activity was carried out against the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus auereus, the antioxidant activity was evaluated from of 2.2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazila sequestration and Artemia salina Leach cytotoxicity. Regarding to the results, the larvicidal activity showed that O. majorana L. essential oil caused high mortality in A. aegypti L. larvae. In the chromatographic analysis, the main component found in O. majorana L. essential oil was pulegone (57.05%), followed by the other components verbenone (16.92%), trans-p-menthan-2-one (8.57%), iso-menthone (5.58%), piperitone (2.83%), 3-octanol (2.35%) and isopulegol (1.47%). The antimicrobial activity showed that E. coli and P. aeruginosa bacteria were more sensitive to oil than S. aureus, which was resistant at all concentrations. Essential oil did not present antioxidant activity, but it has high cytotoxic activity against A. salina L.

Abstract
Alternative technologies for long-term preservation, quality assurance, and safety of meat are continuously pursued by the food industry to satisfy the demands of modern consumers for nutritious and healthy meat-based products. Naturally occurring phenolic compounds are considered promising substances by the meat industry for their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, while consumers seem to embrace them for their claimed health benefits. Despite the numerous in vitro and in situ studies demonstrating their beneficial effects against meat oxidation, spoilage, and foodborne pathogens, wide application and commercialization has not been yet achieved. Major obstacles are still the scarcity of legislative framework, the large variety of meat-based products and targeted pathogens, the limited number of case-specific application protocols and the questionable universal efficiency of the applied ones. The objectives of the present review are i) to summarize the current knowledge about the applications of naturally occurring phenols in meat and meat-based products, emphasizing the mechanisms, determinants, and spectrum of their antioxidant and antimicrobial activity; ii) to present state-of-the-art technologies utilized for the application of phenolic compounds in meat systems; and iii) to discuss relevant regulation, limitations, perspectives, and future challenges for their mass industrial use.

Abstract
Medicinal and aromatic plants are known to have a wide range of uses and health benefits, and should be exploited for their bioactivity. Here we evaluated the antimicrobial activity of decoctions of Satureja montana L. and Origanum majorana L. against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and Candida spp. as well as their mechanism of action and phenolic characterization. The Satureja montana and Origanum majorana extracts were effective against a broad set of species, including the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Streptococcus dysgalactiae and the Gram-negative Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Both extracts were found to have rosmarinic acid as the main phenolic compound and to exert their antimicrobial activity at the level of the cell membrane. Membrane perturbations by the extracts impaired cell membrane integrity only a few hours after exposure. This study confirms the bioactive potential of Satureja montana and Origanum majorana decoctions, and supports the development of novel formulations with wide antimicrobial properties based on these medicinal and aromatic herbs.

Abstract
Background: Active packaging is one of the new packaging technologies which causes interaction between packaging material and food with the aim of food shelf life extension while maintaining food safety and quality. Biodegradable films like polylactic acid (PLA) can be good alternatives to non-biodegradable plastics because of environmental pollution and concerns about the limitations of petroleum resources. Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of PLA film incorporated with marjoram and clove essential oils (EOs) (0.5 and 1% v/v) in maintaining the microbial and chemical quality of minced beef during refrigerated storage. Materials and Methods: Minced beef was packaged with PLA film incorporated with marjoram and clove EOs (0.5 and 1% v/v) alone and in combination and stored at refrigerator temperature for 10 days. Then, microbiological and chemical analyses were done at 0, 2, 4, 7 and 10 days of examination. Results: A reduction of 1 log CFU/g in total count was observed between groups with simultaneous use of EOs and control group (P<0.05) at day 7; however, there was not any significant difference between the mentioned groups at day 10. Active packaging with marjoram and clove EOs decreased the number of psychrotrophs in comparison to the control group and it was more evident at days 7 and 10. The number of Enterobacteriaceae in control and 1% clove EO/1% marjoram EO groups showed a difference of 3 log units at day 10. TVB-N of 1% clove EO/1% marjoram EO and 0.5% clove EO/1% marjoram EO showed significant differences from control at day 10 (P<0.05). Conclusion: The results of the current study have shown that the active PLA films can be a promising approach in order to maintain microbial and chemical quality of minced beef at refrigerator temperature for 10 days.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a troubled foodborne pathogen associated with contamination of meat, fish and poultry. The present work aimed to evaluate plant extracts as natural preservatives anti- Escherichia coli O157:H7 in meat and fish products. MATERIALS AND METHODS Antibacterial activity and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of seven herbal plants, clove, marjoram, sage, pomegranate peel, turmeric, Cassia fistula and black pepper and their different 6 mixes were examined against Escherichia coli O157:H7. Phytochemical qualitative analysis, phenolic compounds (HPLC), total phenolic, total flavonoid contents and antioxidant activities of individual extracts and their 6 mixes were evaluated. Combination Mix 5 extract was applied on meat and fish-fillet, then its antimicrobial effect against E. coli O157:H7 and sensory evaluation were assessed. RESULTS Five extracts exhibited good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli O157:H7. The greatest inhibition zone was recorded by clove aqueous extract (25 mm). Mix 5 (clove, sage, pomegranate and Cassia fistula) showed the highest inhibition with MIC of 3.0 mg mL-1. This mix exhibited strong anti-bactericidal effect against E. coli O157:H7 in meat and fish-fillet products throughout 8 days of cold storage (4°C). The sensory evaluation revealed that Mix 5 was acceptable by panelists with concentration of 0.50% in beef burgers and 0.25% in fish-fillet. CONCLUSION This study suggests that the use of herbal extracts provide antibacterial potentials against food pathogens in meat and fish products.

Abstract
Essential oils are known to be a natural preservative due to their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate an effect of thyme and cumin essential oils (EOs) in combination with air packaging and vacuum packaging on the shelf life of burgers from surimi and chicken meat. The study was conducted at 2°C for 27 days. We tested four groups of samples: (a) burgers in air package, (b) burgers with cumin and thyme EOs in air packaging, (c) burgers in vacuum packaging, and (d) burgers with cumin and thyme EOs in vacuum packaging. The greatest effect (P < 0.001) on the chemical and microbiological characteristics of the novel burgers displayed burgers with EOs of thyme and cumin packaged under vacuum. It can be explained by synergistic effect, which made it possible to extend the shelf life of the burgers. These results allowed us to suggest that surimi could be used as a basic ingredient in burgers production.

Abstract
In this study, the introduction of Origanum majorana L. essential oil into a polyamidoamine (PAMAM) G4.0 dendrimer was performed for creation of a potential nanocide against Phytophthora infestans. The characteristics of marjoram oil and PAMAM G4.0 was analyzed using transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The success of combining marjoram oil with PAMAM G4.0 was evaluated by FT-IR, TGA analysis, and the antifungal activity of this system was also investigated. The results showed that the antifungal activity of oil/PAMAM G4.0 was high and significantly higher than only PAMAM G4.0 or marjoram essential oil. These results indicated that the nanocide oil/PAMAM G4.0 helped strengthen and prolong the antifungal properties of the oil.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Origanum majorana L. (Lamiaceae) was usually used in Moroccan folk medicine to treat infantile colic and abdominal discomfort. MATERIALS AND METHODS The essential oil from the aerial part of the dry Origanum majorana L. (EOOM) was obtained through hydro distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The effect of EOOM on muscle relaxation was measured on rabbit and rat intestinal smooth muscle mounted in an isotonic transducer. RESULTS 1) The main compounds obtained from the aqueous extract of this plant were alpha Terpineol, L-terpinen-4-ol and Beta.-Linalool. 2) EOOM inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner spontaneous contraction of rabbit jejunum, with an IC50 = 64.08 ± 2.42 μg/mL. 3) In rat intestine, EOOM induced the relaxation of the tissue in concentration-dependent manner with an IC50 = 39.70 ± 2.29 μg/mL when the tissue was pre-contracted with CCh 10-6 M, and 48.70 ± 2.26 μg/mL when the tissue was pre-contracted with 25 mM KCl. 4) The relaxation effect induced by EOOM was more important than that obtained in the presence of atropine, hexamethonium, Nifedipine, L-NAME and Blue of methylene. CONCLUSION the present result indicates that essential oil of Origanum majorana L. exhibit an effect on intestinal relaxation in vitro. This effect further validates the traditional use of Origanum majorana L. to treat infantile colic and abdominal discomfort.

Abstract
Nisin (Ni), natamycin (Na), green tea extract (GTE) and their combinations were evaluated for controlling beet leaves' native microbiota as well as Listeria innocua and Escherichia coli external contaminations. Antimicrobial effectiveness was evaluated through in vitro and in vivo studies. In the in vitro studies, GTE treatment (0.85%) completely eliminated growth of native microbiota, reduced L. innocua from values of 8.5-3.5 log from 24 h onwards and reduced E. coli below detection limit (DL) after 72 h. Ni (500 IU/mL) was the most effective against L. innocua (7 log CFU/mL reduction) and its combination with GTE presented significant interactions for mesophilic aerobic bacteria (MAB) and L. innocua control. Na (200 ppm) alone or in combination with GTE did not show antimicrobial activity against microorganisms under study. Additionally in vivo evaluation showed that 2.5-5% GTE concentrations are needed to achieve significant inhibitory effects on MAB, L. innocua and E. coli. Furthermore, the best results for MAB and L. innocua control were obtained with the GTE5 + Ni treatment. This study revealed that GTE, either alone or combined with nisin, is a highly promising option with potential for reducing or preventing the growth of pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms present in leafy vegetables, specifically in beet leaves.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the fungicidal effect of eleven essential oils against six isolates of the genus Rhizopus. Isolates were obtained from various moldy foods (chestnut, bread, strawberry, nectarine, blackberry and cherry tomatoes). The essential oils used in this study were extracts of basil (Oscimum basilicum L.), hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis L.), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia MILLER.), marjoram (Origanum majorana L.), mint (Mentha piperita L.), oregano (Origanum vulgare L.), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), sage (Salvia officinalis L.), summer savory (Satureja hortensis L.), thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) and wild thyme (Thymus serpyllum L.). Semi-quantitative composition of the essential oil samples was determined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The GC-MS analyses of the essential oils led to identification of 139 compounds, of which 49 were presented in ≥1% amount in at least one essential oil. The antifungal activity of essential oils against the Rhizopus spp. was determined, using micro-atmosphere method (0.625 μL.ml-1 of air), during 7 days. Seven essential oils: thyme, mint, summer savory, lavender, marjoram, oregano and wild thyme completely inhibited the growth of all isolates. Other essential oils have different effects on the growth of isolates. Basil essential oil stimulated growth of two isolates on the second day of cultivation. The growth of other isolates was, by contrast, inhibited by this essential oil in the same time of cultivation. Hyssop essential oil completely inhibited growth of two isolates, other 4 isolates were inhibited to fourth day of cultivation. In conclusion, certain essential oils are highly effective in vapour phase and can be used in another test of their antifungal activity and could be used in control of Rhizopus spp. or other fungal pathogens.

Abstract
CONTEXT Origanum (Lamiaceae) has been used in food and pharmaceutical industries. OBJECTIVE Isolation and identification of bioactive compounds from Origanum rotundifolium Boiss. and investigation of their antiproliferative and antioxidant activities. MATERIALS AND METHODS The aerial part of O. rotundifolium was dried and powdered (1.0 kg ±2.0 g) then extracted with hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water. Solvent (3 × 1 L) was used for each extraction for a week at room temperature. The aqueous extract was partitioned with ethyl acetate (3 × 1 L) to yield the water/EtOAc extract subjected to chromatography to isolate the active compounds. The structures of isolated compounds were elucidated by 1 D, 2 D NMR and LC-TOF/MS. RESULTS Apigenin (1), ferulic acid (2), vitexin (3), caprolactam (4), rosmarinic acid (5), and globoidnan A (6) were isolated and identified. Globoidnan A (6), vitexin (3), and rosmarinic acid (5) revealed the excellent DPPH• scavenging effect with IC50 values of 22.4, 31.4, 47.2 μM, respectively. Vitexin (3) (IC50 3.6), globoidnan A (6) (IC50 4.6), apigenin (1) (IC50 8.9) and ferulic acid (2) exhibited more ABTS•+ activity than standard Trolox (IC50 13.8 μg/mL). Vitexin (3) revealed the most antiproliferative activity against HeLa, HT29, C6 and Vero cells lines with IC50 values of 35.6, 32.5, 41.6, 46.7 (μM), respectively. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Globoidnan A (6) has the most antioxidant effects on all assays. This has to do with the chemical structure of the compound bearing the acidic protons. Vitexin (3) could be a promising anticancer agent.

Abstract
Naturally fermented meat sausages have a long tradition in Mediterranean countries and are one of the most important groups of traditional foods consumed throughout Europe. Despite all the advances in food science and technology and increased regulatory requirements and concerns for safety and quality during the last decades, the challenge to control important foodborne pathogens in this type of meat products still persists. Simultaneously, growing consumer interest in safe, high quality and minimal processed products, with less additives/preservatives have driven the food industry and scientists in a crusade for innovative technologies to maintain the safety of these products by natural means. Biological control (biocontrol) fits well within this tendency. This review summarizes the latest achievements on biocontrol strategies applied to Mediterranean-style fermented sausages, namely: (i) bioprotective cultures; (ii) bacteriocins; and, (iii) essential oils (EOs).

Abstract
In this work the antimicrobial effect of Thymus vulgare and Origanum vulgare aqueous tea infusion on the total mesophilic bacterial count (TVC), psychrotrophic bacteria count (PBC) and enterococci count in the heat treated meat product - sausages were evaluated. To prepare 1 kg of sausage in experimental groups were used 10 cm3 of Thymus vulgare resp. Origanum vulgare aqueous tea infusions. It was found that value of TVC and PBC in the experimental groups of sausages with Thymus vulgare addition after 7 days of storage (4 °C) were 2.78 resp. 2.14 log cfu.g-1 and with the Origanum vulgare addition were 2.49 resp. 1.90 log cfu.g-1. The value of TVC and PBC in the control group of sausage were 3.13 resp. 2.72 log cfu.g-1. During 10 days of storage (4 °C) the TVC and PBC in the sausages with Thymus vulgare addition increase and reached the value 4.81 resp. 3.52 log cfu.g-1. In the sausages with the Origanum vulgare addition TVC and PBC after 10 days of storage reached the value 3.67 resp. 1.60 log cfu.g-1. The value of TVC and PBC in the control group of sausage after 10 days of storage were 6.47 resp. 5.47 log cfu.g-1. Counts of enterococci in control and experimental groups of sausages during 10 days of storage were not detected. Thyme and origanum aqueous tea infusions suppressed the development of TVC and PBC compare to control samples.

Abstract
Three data sets concerning the behaviour of spoilage flora of fillets treated with natural preservative substances (NPS) were used to construct a new kind of mathematical predictive model. This model, unlike other ones, allows expressing the antibacterial effect of the NPS separately from the prediction of the growth rate. This approach, based on the introduction of a parameter into the predictive primary model, produced a good fitting of observed data and allowed characterising quantitatively the increase of shelf-life of fillets.

Abstract
ABTRACT Foodborne illness represents a major economic burden worldwide and a serious public health threat, with around 48 million people affected and 3,000 death each year only in the USA. One of the possible strategies to reduce foodborne infections is the development of effective preservation strategies capable of eradicating microbial contamination of foods. Over the last years, new challenges for the food industry have arisen such as the increase of antimicrobial resistance of foodborne pathogens to common preservatives and consumers demand for naturally based products. In order to overcome this, new approaches using natural or bio-based products as food preservatives need to be investigated. Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is a well-known herb widely used as spice, or in folk medicine, and in the pharmacy and food industries. Coriander seed oil is the world's second most relevant essential oil, exhibiting antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, some yeasts, dermatophytes and filamentous fungi. This review highlights coriander oil antimicrobial activity and possible mechanisms of action in microbial cells and discusses the ability of coriander oil usage as a food preservative, pointing out possible paths for the successful evolution for these strategies towards a successful development of a food preservation strategy using coriander oil.

Abstract
Food consumers and industries urged the need of natural alternatives to assure food safety and quality. As a response, the use of natural compounds from herbs and spices is an alternative to synthetic additives associated with toxic problems. This review discusses the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of oregano essential oil (OEO) and its potential as a food additive. Oregano is a plant that has been used as a food seasoning since ancient times. The common name of oregano is given to several species: Origanum (family: Lamiaceae) and Lippia (family: Verbenaceae), amongst others. The main compounds identified in the different OEOs are carvacrol and thymol, which are responsible for the characteristic odor, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activity; however, their content may vary according to the species, harvesting season, and geographical sources. These substances as antibacterial agents make the cell membrane permeable due to its impregnation in the hydrophobic domains, this effect is higher against gram positive bacteria. In addition, the OEO has antioxidant properties effective in retarding the process of lipid peroxidation in fatty foods, and scavenging free radicals. In this perspective, the present review analyzes and discusses the state of the art about the actual and potential uses of OEO as an antimicrobial and antioxidant food additives.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the in vitro mutagenic activity of Origanum majorana essential oil. The most abundant compounds identified by GC-MS were γ-terpinene (25.73%), α-terpinene (17.35%), terpinen-4-ol (17.24%), and sabinene (10.8%). Mutagenicity was evaluated by the Salmonella/microsome test using the preincubation procedure on TA98, TA97a, TA100, TA102, and TA1535 Salmonella typhimurium strains, in the absence or in the presence of metabolic activation. Cytotoxicity was detected at concentrations higher than 0.04 μL/plate in the absence of S9 mix and higher than 0.08 μL/plate in the presence of S9 mix and no gene mutation increase was observed. For the in vitro mammalian cell micronucleus test, V79 Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts were used. Cytotoxicity was only observed at concentrations higher than or equal to 0.05 μg/mL. Moreover, when tested in noncytotoxic concentrations, O. majorana essential oil was not able to induce chromosome mutation. The results from this study therefore suggest that O. majorana essential oil is not mutagenic at the concentrations tested in the Salmonella/microsome and micronucleus assays.
