Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, non-specific inflammatory disease affecting the colon and rectum with an etiology that remains elusive. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been widely used on long-term UC treatment to better maintain the efficacy than traditional aminosalicylic acid or glucocorticosteroids and to ease financial burden of patients. Qingchang Wenzhong Decoction (QCWZD) is a modern TCM decoction with established clinical efficacy but the mechanism of its protection on intestinal barrier function remains unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY Current findings highlight that the activation of the hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) pathway can facilitate the repair of intestinal epithelium barrier. This study is to investigate the protective effects of QCWZD and its HIF-targeted ingredients on hypoxia-dependent intestinal barrier. METHODS The mice model of UC was induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). Disease activity index (DAI) and histopathology scores and colon length were used to measure the severity of colitis. The DAO activity in serum and protein expression of tight junction (TJ) proteins were detected to explore the function of intestinal barrier. The protein levels of HIF-1α and its downstream gene heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) were measured as well. HIF-targeted active ingredients in QCWZD were selected by network pharmacology and molecular docking. Protective effects of six constituents on HIF-related anti-oxidative and barrier protective pathway were evaluated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced HT29 and RAW264.7 cells, through the measurement of the production of ROS and mRNA level of pro-inflammatory cytokines. HIF-1α knockdown was carried out to explore the correlation of protection effects with HIF-related pathway of the active ingredients. RESULTS QCWZD effectively alleviated colitis induced by DSS and demonstrated a protective effect on intestinal barrier function by upregulating HIF-related pathways. Six specific ingredients in QCWZD, targeting HIF, successfully reduced the production of cellular ROS and proinflammatory cytokines in LPS-induced cells. It is noteworthy that the barrier protection provided by these molecules is intricately linked with the HIF-related pathway. CONCLUSIONS This study elucidates the HIF-related molecular mechanism of QCWZD in protecting the function of the epithelial barrier. Six compounds targeting the activation of the HIF-dependent pathway were demonstrated to unveil a novel therapeutic approach for managing UC.

Abstract
In the contemporary era, heightened emphasis on health and safety has emerged as a paramount concern among individuals with food. The concepts of "natural" and "green" have progressively asserted dominance in the food consumption market. Consequently, through continuous exploration and development, an escalating array of natural bioactive ingredients is finding application in both nutrition delivery and the broader food industry. Chlorogenic acid (CGA), a polyphenolic compound widely distributed in various plants in nature, has garnered significant attention. Abundant research underscores CGA's robust biological activity, showcasing notable preventive and therapeutic efficacy across diverse diseases. This article commences with a comprehensive overview, summarizing the dietary sources and primary biological activities of CGA. These encompass antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-cancer, and neuroprotective activities. Next, a comprehensive overview of the current research on nutrient delivery systems incorporating CGA is provided. This exploration encompasses nanoparticle, liposome, hydrogel, and emulsion delivery systems. Additionally, the article explores the latest applications of CGA in the food industry. Serving as a cutting-edge theoretical foundation, this paper contributes to the design and development of CGA in the realms of nutrition delivery and the food industry. Finally, the article presents informed speculations and considerations for the future development of CGA.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory intestinal disorder, and its complex etiology makes prevention and treatment challenging. Research on new drugs and treatment strategies is currently a focal point. Phenolic acids are widely present in plant-based diets and have demonstrated the potential to alleviate colitis due to their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In this review, we provide an overview of the structures and main dietary sources of phenolic acids, encompassing benzoic acid and cinnamic acid. Additionally, we explore the potential of phenolic acids as a nutritional therapy for preventing and treating IBD. In animal and cell experiments, phenolic acids effectively alleviate IBD induced by drug exposure or genetic defects. The mechanisms include improving intestinal mucosal barrier function, reducing oxidative stress, inhibiting excessive activation of the immune response, and regulating the balance of the intestinal microbiota. Our observation points towards the need for additional basic and clinical investigations on phenolic acids and their derivatives as potential novel therapeutic agents for IBD.

Abstract
There are many complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are two complications related to the increased lipid accumulation in the liver. Previous studies have shown that mulberry leaf water extract (MLE) has the effect of lowering lipid levels in peripheral blood, inhibiting the expression of fatty acid synthase (FASN) and increasing the activity of liver antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. Our study aimed to investigate the role of MLE and its main component, neochlorogenic acid (nCGA), in reducing serum lipid profiles, decreasing lipid deposition in the liver, and improving steatohepatitis levels. We evaluated the antioxidant activity including glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GRd), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase was tested in mice fed with MLE and nCGA. The results showed a serum lipid profile, and fatty liver scores were significantly increased in the HFD group compared to the db/m and db mice groups, while liver antioxidant activity significantly decreased in the HFD group. When fed with HFD + MLE or nCGA, there was a significant improvement in serum lipid profiles, liver fatty deposition conditions, steatohepatitis levels, and liver antioxidant activity compared to the HFD group. Although MLE and nCGA do not directly affect the blood sugar level of db/db mice, they do regulate abnormalities in lipid metabolism. These results demonstrate the potential of MLE/nCGA as a treatment against glucotoxicity-induced diabetic fatty liver disease in animal models.

Abstract
Chlorogenic acid (CGA), known as an important natural antioxidative compound in Ficus carica L, has valuable application prospects on health food, functional food, nutrition and dietary formulations. In this study, a surface multiple imprinting layers membrane (SMILM) was developed and applied to separate CGA from F. carica. Two different imprinting layers were integrated onto the membrane surface in sequence. The first imprinting layer was formed by dopamine polymerization and the second imprinting layer was fabricated by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and boronate affinity. The prepared SMILM with well-oriented multiple recognition sites exhibited high adsorption capacity (52.08 mg·g-1 in 60 min) for CGA and specific selectivity with imprinting factor (IF) of 3.06. Furthermore, the recognition mechanism of SMILM was clarified by molecular simulation and NMR. The SMILM was successfully applied to separate CGA from the fruits, peels and leaves of F. carica with recoveries of 90.22, 83.31 and 84.95 %, respectively.

Abstract
Food intake is a basic need to sustain life, but foodborne pathogens and food-related xenobiotics are also the main health concerns regarding intestinal barrier homeostasis. With a predominant role in the well-being of the entire human body, intestinal barrier homeostasis is strictly regulated by epithelial and immune cells. These cells are also the main intervenients in oxidative stress and inflammation-related diseases in the intestinal tract, triggered, for example, by genetic/epigenetic factors, food additives, pesticides, drugs, pathogens, and their metabolites. Nevertheless, the human diet can also be seen as a solution for the problem, mainly via the inclusion of functional foods or nutraceuticals that may act as antioxidant/anti-inflammatory agents to prevent and mitigate acute and chronic oxidative damage and inflammation. A literature analysis of recent advances in this topic highlights the significant role of Nrf2 (nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2) and NF-kB (nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells) pathways in these biological processes, with many natural products and phytochemicals targeting endogenous antioxidant systems and cytokine production and balance. In this review, we summarized and discussed studies using in vitro and in vivo models of the intestinal tract used to reproduce oxidative damage and inflammatory events, as well as the role of natural products as modulators of Nrf2 and NK-kB pathways.

Abstract
Multilayer structural nanoparticles (MSNPs) fabricated by layer-by-layer self-assembly were used for the co-encapsulation of resveratrol (Res) and vitamin D3 (Vd). Res and Vd co-encapsulated MSNPs (Res-Vd-MSNPs) were evaluated by appearance, morphology, particle size, ζ potential and encapsulation efficiency (EE). The results showed that Res-Vd-MSNPs were spherical in shape with a particle size of 625.4 nm and a surface charge of +26.1 mV. The EE of Res and Vd was as high as 93.6 % and 90.8 %, respectively. Res-Vd-MSNPs exhibited better stability and lower degradation rate in simulated gastric fluid, allowing the programmed sequential release of Vd and Res in simulated intestinal fluid and simulated colonic fluid, which was also confirmed by in vivo fluorescence imaging of mice. In addition, Res-Vd-MSNPs effectively alleviated the clinical symptoms of dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS)-induced colitis in mice, including weight loss, diarrhea and fecal bleeding, and it especially exerted a preventive effect on DSS-induced colon tissue damage and colon shortening. Furthermore, Res-Vd-MSNPs suppressed the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 and ameliorated DSS-induced oxidative damage, decreased colonic myeloperoxidase (MPO) and nitric oxide (NO) activities and elevated glutathione (GSH) level in DSS-treated mice. This study illustrated that MSNPs were potential carriers for developing the co-delivery system for the synergistic prevention and treatment of ulcerative colitis.

Abstract
Green coffee extract is currently of great interest to researchers due to its high concentration of chlorogenic acid (CGA) and its potential health benefits. CGA constitutes 6 to 10% of the dry weight of the extract and, due to its anti-inflammatory properties, is a promising natural supplement and agent with therapeutic applications. The purpose of our study was to discover the effects of CGA on peripheral blood mononuclear cell proliferation, and the production of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines as well as reactive oxidative species (ROS) in horses during exercise. According to the findings, CGA can affect the proliferation of T helper cells. In addition, at a dose of 50 g/mL, CGA increased the activation of CD4+FoxP3+ and CD8+FoxP3+ regulatory cells. Physical activity decreases ROS production in CD5+ monocytes, but this effect depends on the concentration of CGA, and the effect of exercise on oxidative stress was lower in CD14+ than in CD5+ cells. Regardless of CGA content, CGA significantly increased the release of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Moreover, the production of IL-17 was greater in cells treated with 50 g/mL of CGA from beginners compared to the control and advanced groups of horses. Our findings suggest that CGA may have immune-enhancing properties. This opens new avenues of research into the mechanisms of action of CGA and possible applications in prevention and health promotion in sport animals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The perturbations of gut microbiota could interact with excessively activated immune responses and play key roles in the etiopathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). Desulfovibrio, the most predominant sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) resided in the human gut, was observed to overgrow in patients with UC. The interactions between specific gut microbiota and drugs and their impacts on UC treatment have not been demonstrated well. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to elucidate whether Desulfovibrio vulgaris (D. vulgaris, DSV) and its flagellin could activate nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptors (NLR) family of apoptosis inhibitory proteins (NAIP) / NLR family caspase activation and recruitment domain-containing protein 4 (NLRC4) inflammasome and promote colitis, and further evaluate the efficacy of eugeniin targeting the interaction interface of D. vulgaris flagellin (DVF) and NAIP to attenuate UC. METHODS The abundance of DSV and the occurrence of macrophage pyroptosis in human UC tissues were investigated. Colitis in mice was established by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and gavaged with DSV or its purified flagellin. NAIP/NLRC4 inflammasome activation and macrophage pyroptosis were evaluated in vivo and in vitro. The effects of eugeniin on blocking the interaction of DVF and NAIP/NLRC4 and relieving colitis were also assessed. RESULTS The abundance of DSV increased in the feces of patients with UC and was found to be associated with disease activity. DSV and its flagellin facilitated DSS-induced colitis in mice. Mechanistically, RNA sequencing showed that gene expression associated with inflammasome complex and pyroptosis was upregulated after DVF treatment in macrophages. DVF was further demonstrated to induce significant macrophage pyroptosis in vitro, depending on NAIP/NLRC4 inflammasome activation. Furthermore, eugeniin was screened as an inhibitor of the interface between DVF and NAIP and successfully alleviated the proinflammatory effect of DVF in colitis. CONCLUSION Targeting DVF-induced NAIP/NLRC4 inflammasome activation and macrophage pyroptosis ameliorates UC. This finding is of great significance for exploring the gut microbiota-host interactions in UC development and providing new insights for precise treatment.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Traditional Chinese medicine believes that "blood fever" is an important cause of psoriasis. Fufang Shengdi mixture (FFSD), based on the Hongban Decoction, is composed of Rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn.) DC., Raw gypsum (Chinese: Sheng Shi Gao), and Lonicera japonica Thunb (Caprifoliaceae). FFSD has effects on nourishing Yin, clearing heat, connecting collaterals, and cooling blood. In modern medical explanation, FFSD has the effects of anti-inflammatory and immunosuppression. Our study proved that FFSD can suppress immunity and ameliorate the symptoms of imiquimod-induced psoriasis in mice. AIM OF THE STUDY This study evaluated the efficacy and possible mechanism of FFSD in psoriasis mice. METHODS AND MATERIALS First, the main components of FFSD were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS). An imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis mouse model was used to evaluate the efficacy of FFSD orally. Psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) scores were recorded throughout the course of the mice to reflect the severity of psoriasis. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used to observe the pathological changes in skin lesions. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed to test the level of IFN-γ and TNF-α in plasma. To further investigate the immunopharmacological effect of FFSD, we used chicken ovalbumin (OVA) to induce immunoreaction in mice. ELISA was used to detect the levels of anti-OVA antibody, IFN-γ and TNF-α in mice. Flow cytometry was performed to quantify the ratio of cell types in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to evaluate the effect of FFSD on immunosuppression. Proteomics and bioinformatics analyzes were performed to find the regulation pathway of the immunosuppressive effect of FFSD. Finally, quantitative PCR (qPCR) and immunohistochemistry were used to measure the upregulation of Annexin-A proteins (ANXAs) in the skin lesion tissue of IMQ-induced mouse. RESULTS On the basis of knowing the composition of FFSD, we first proved the efficacy of FFSD in alleviating IMQ-induced psoriasis in mice. Second, we further clarified the pharmacological effect of FFSD on immunosuppression via OVA-induced mice. Subsequently, it was found that the significant up-regulation of ANXAs was caused by FFSD through proteomics analysis, and the finding was proved in the IMQ-induced psoriasis mouse model. CONCLUSIONS This study elucidates the immunosuppressive pharmacological effect of FFSD on improving psoriasis through up-regulating ANXAs.

Abstract
It is well established that p-Hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs), including ferulic, caffeic, sinapic, and p-coumaric acids, possess a characteristic phenylpropanoid C6-C3 backbone and account for about one-third of the phenolic compounds in our diet. HCAs are typically associated with various plant cell wall components, including mono-, di-, and polysaccharides, sterols, polyamines, glycoproteins, and lignins. Interestingly, enzymes produced by intestinal microbes liberate HCAs from these associations. HCAs are completely absorbed in their free form upon ingestion and undergo specific reactions upon absorption in the small intestine or liver. The gut epithelium, composed of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), acts as a physical barrier against harmful bacteria and a site for regulated interactions between bacteria and the gut lumen. Thus, maintaining the integrity of the epithelial barrier is essential for establishing a physiochemical environment conducive to homeostasis. This review summarizes the protective effects of HCAs on the intestinal barrier, achieved through four mechanisms: preserving tight junction proteins (TJPs), modulating pro-inflammatory cytokines, exerting antioxidant activity, and regulating the intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
The intestine is critically crucial for nutrient absorption and host defense against exogenous stimuli. Inflammation-related intestinal diseases, including enteritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and colorectal cancer (CRC), are heavy burdens for human beings due to their high incidence and devastating clinical symptoms. Current studies have confirmed that inflammatory responses, along with oxidative stress and dysbiosis as critical pathogenesis, are involved in most intestinal diseases. Polyphenols are secondary metabolites derived from plants, which possess convincible anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as regulation of intestinal microbiome, indicating the potential applications in enterocolitis and CRC. Actually, accumulating studies based on the biological functions of polyphenols have been performed to investigate the functional roles and underlying mechanisms over the last few decades. Based on the mounting evidence of literature, the objective of this review is to outline the current research progress regarding the category, biological functions, and metabolism of polyphenols within the intestine, as well as applications for the prevention and treatment of intestinal diseases, which might provide ever-expanding new insights for the utilization of natural polyphenols.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chlorogenic acid (CGA), as one of the most abundant naturally occurring phenolic acids, has been documented to be beneficial for intestinal health. However, the underlying mechanism is still not fully understood. The adult intestinal stem cell is the critical driver of epithelial homeostasis and regeneration. RESULTS This study hypothesized that CGA exerted intestinal health effects by modulating intestinal stem-cell functions. Lgr5-EGFP mice were treated for 14 days, and intestinal organoids derived from these mice were treated for 3 days, using CGA solution. In comparison with the control group, CGA treatment increased intestinal villous height and crypt depth in mice and augmented the area expansion and the number of budding intestinal organoids. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis revealed that CGA treatment significantly increased the expression of genes coding intestinal stem-cell markers in intestinal tissue and organoids, and upregulated the expression of genes coding secretory cell lineages and enterocytes, although not statistically significantly. Fluorescence-activated cell-sorting analysis further confirmed that CGA augmented the number of stem cells. 5-Ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) incorporation and Ki67 immunostaining results also demonstrated that CGA treatment enhanced intestinal stem-cell proliferation. CONCLUSION Altogether, our findings indicate that CGA could activate intestinal stem-cell and epithelial regeneration, which could contribute to the improvement of intestinal morphology or organoid growth of mice. This highlights a promising mechanism for CGA as an excellent candidate for the formulation of dietary supplements and functional foods for intestinal protection. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Plant-derived antioxidants are intrinsic components of human diet and factors implicated in tolerance mechanisms against environmental stresses in both plants and humans. They are being used as food preservatives and additives or ingredients of cosmetics. For nearly forty years, Rhizobium rhizogenes-transformed roots (hairy roots) have been studied in respect to their usability as producers of plant specialized metabolites of different, primarily medical applications. Moreover, the hairy root cultures have proven their value as a tool in crop plant improvement and in plant secondary metabolism investigations. Though cultivated plants remain a major source of plant polyphenolics of economic importance, the decline in biodiversity caused by climate changes and overexploitation of natural resources may increase the interest in hairy roots as a productive and renewable source of biologically active compounds. The present review examines hairy roots as efficient producers of simple phenolics, phenylethanoids, and hydroxycinnamates of plant origin and summarizes efforts to maximize the product yield. Attempts to use Rhizobium rhizogenes-mediated genetic transformation for inducing enhanced production of the plant phenolics/polyphenolics in crop plants are also mentioned.

Abstract
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages, which has several effects on the human body. In particular, current evidence suggests that coffee consumption is associated with a reduced risk of inflammation, various types of cancers, and certain neurodegenerative diseases. Among the various constituents of coffee, phenolic phytochemicals, more specifically chlorogenic acids, are the most abundant, and there have been many attempts to utilize coffee chlorogenic acid for cancer prevention and therapy. Due to its beneficial biological effect on the human body, coffee is regarded as a functional food. In this review article, we summarize the recent advances and knowledge on the association of phytochemicals contained in coffee as nutraceuticals, with a particular focus on phenolic compounds, their intake, and nutritional biomarkers, with the reduction of disease risk, including inflammation, cancer, and neurological diseases.

Abstract
Under oxidative stress condition, the protective effects of dietary chlorogenic acid (CGA) supplementation on liver antioxidant capacity, intestinal inflammation and barrier function, muscle development and skin coloration in channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus were explored in the current study. With that purpose, I. punctatus were fed five experimental diets containing 2% fresh fish oil (FFO, 9.2 meqO2/kg) or 2% oxidized fish oil (OFO, 897.4 meqO2/kg) without or with CGA supplementation (0.02%, 0.04% and 0.08%) for 8 weeks. Upon comparative analysis, the oxidized fish oil consumption significantly lowered weight gain rate, decreased intestinal villi length and muscular thickness values and the tight junction proteins mRNA abundance, augmented the intestinal proinflammatory factors, attenuated hepatic antioxidant enzymes activities and related genes mRNA expression levels, influenced the myogenic regulatory factors expression profile and impacted the myocyte density, myocyte area values as well as the skin pigments contents compared to the FFO treatment. Collectively, long-term feeding of the oxidized fish oil diet suppressed the growth performance, destroyed intestinal structural integrity, caused intestinal inflammation and hepatic oxidative stress, impacted the skeletal development and skin color of I. punctatus. Whereas CGA supplementation in oxidized fish oil diets partially counteracted the negative effects of the oxidized fish oil on I. punctatus in terms of increasing the growth performance, improving the intestinal mucosal structure, alleviating hepatic oxidative stress and intestinal inflammation, recompiling the myogenic regulatory factors expression and improving skin color. In conclusion, CGA has great potential to be an aquatic feed additive.

Abstract
Immune stress exerts detrimental effects on growth performance and intestinal barrier function during intensive animal production with ensuing serious economic consequences. Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is used widely as a feed additive to improve the growth performance and intestinal health of poultry. However, the effects of dietary CGA supplementation on amelioration of the intestinal barrier impairment caused by immune stress in broilers are unknown. This study investigated the effects of CGA on growth performance, intestinal barrier function, and the inflammatory response in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) mediated immune-stressed broilers. Three hundred and twelve 1-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were divided randomly into 4 groups with 6 replicates of thirteen broilers. The treatments included: i) saline group: broilers injected with saline and fed with basal diet; ii) LPS group: broilers injected with LPS and fed with basal diet; iii) CGA group: broilers injected with saline and feed supplemented with CGA; and iv) LPS+CGA group: broilers injected with LPS and feed supplemented with CGA. Animals in the LPS and LPS+CGA groups were injected intraperitoneally with an LPS solution prepared with saline from 14 d of age for 7 consecutive days, whereas broilers in the other groups were injected only with saline. LPS induced a decrease in feed intake of broilers during the stress period, but CGA effectively alleviated this decrease. Moreover, CGA inhibited the reduction of villus height and improved the ratio of villus height to crypt depth in the duodenum of broilers 24 and 72 h after LPS injection. In addition, dietary CGA supplementation significantly restored the expression of cation-selective and channel-forming Claudin2 protein 2 h after LPS injection in the ileum. LPS enhanced the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in the small intestine, but this enhancement was blocked by CGA supplementation. The expression of interleukin-10 (IL-10) increased with LPS injection and CGA promoted the production of IL-10. CGA addition downregulated the expression of intestinal interleukin-6 (IL-6) of broilers under normal rearing conditions. However, CGA supplementation upregulated the expression of IL-6 of broilers 72 h after LPS injection. The data demonstrate that dietary supplementation with CGA alleviates intestinal barrier damage and intestinal inflammation induced by LPS injection during immune stress thereby improving growth performance of broilers.

Abstract
The study aimed to determine the antioxidant activities and phenolic compounds of Bambangan (Mangifera pajang), a type of wild fruit belongs to the family of Anacardiaceae during fermentation at room (28 °C) and elevated temperature (35 °C). The antioxidant capacity was estimated based on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picyrlhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity, ferric-ion-reducing power (FRAP), 2,2´-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical cation assay and oxygen-radical absorbing capacity (ORAC). A reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to identify the phenolic compounds. Samples of bambangan fermented at 35 °C achieved the highest FRAP (141.42 mM Fe(II)/g extract) and ABTS values (5.00 mmol TE/g) within the first six days as compared to the samples fermented at room temperature (28 °C), which required 10 days to achieve the highest FRAP and ABTS values. No significant difference was found (p > 0.05) on the antioxidant activity of the samples that were kept at prolonged fermentation and storage. The total phenolic content (TPC) increased throughout the fermentation with the highest value of 44.69 ± 0.01 mg GAE/g. Gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, vanillin, ρ -coumaric acid and rutin are the major phenolic compounds identified in the fermented product. The results suggested that the antioxidant capacity of bambangan is affected by the fermentation temperature and the fermented product could be a source of antioxidants.

Abstract
The coffee industry is one of the most important commercial value chains worldwide. Nonetheless, it is also associated to several social, economic, and environmental concerns that impair its sustainability. The present review is focused on these main sustainability concerns from the field to the coffee cup, as well as on the strategies that are being developed and/or implemented to attain sustainability and circular economy principles in the different chain segments. In this context, distinct approaches have been applied, such as sustainable certifications (e.g., voluntary sustainability standards), corporate sustainability initiatives, direct trade, relationship coffee concepts, geographical indication, legislations, waste management, and byproducts valorization, among others. These strategies are addressed and discussed throughout this review, as well as their recognized advantages and limitations. Overall, there is still a long way to go to attain the much-desired sustainability in the coffee chain, being essential to join the efforts of all actors and entities directly or indirectly involved, namely, producers, retailers, roasters, governments, educational institutions (such as universities and scientific research institutes), and organizations.

Abstract
The sugarcane processing industry generates a large amount of straw, which has a negative environmental impact, and high costs are associated with their elimination, wasting their potential bioactive value attributed to their richness in polyphenols. In this study, an ethanolic extract produced from sugarcane straw was screened for its phenolic compounds content, and the potential use of this extract in the development of a food ingredient was further evaluated. Fifty different secondary metabolites belonging to the hydroxybenzoic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, and flavonoids were identified by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-ultrahigh-resolution-quadrupole time of flight-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-UHR-QqTOF-MS). The predominant phenolic compounds found were 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, chlorogenic acid, and 5-O-feruloylquinic acid. The obtained extracts showed strong potential as food preservatives by exhibiting (a) antioxidant activity using both 2.2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt radical cation (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods; and (b) antimicrobial capacity, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 50 mg/mL for Staphylococcus aureus, 74% inhibition for Bacillus cereus, and 44% for Salmonella enterica; and (c) the capacity to inhibit a food browning enzyme, tyrosinase (28-73% for 1-8 mg/ mL). Moreover, the extracts showed antidiabetic potential by inhibiting the enzymes α-glucosidase (15-38% for 1.25-5.00 mg/mL) and dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) (62-114% for 0.31-5.00 mg/mL). The extract (0.625 mg/mL) also exhibited the capacity to reduce proinflammatory mediators (i.e., interleukins 6 and 8, and tumor necrosis factor alpha) when Caco-2 cells were stimulated with interleukin 1 beta. Thus, sugarcane straw extract, which is rich in phenolic compounds, showed high potential to be used in the development of food-preservative ingredients owing to its antioxidant and antimicrobial potential, and to be explored as a food supplement in diabetes prevention and as coadjuvant to reduce intestinal inflammation by reducing proinflammatory mediators.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by recurrent gastrointestinal inflammation caused by abnormal immune response, and patients usually have intestinal flora imbalance. At present, the pathogenesis of UC is not well understood, and it appears that there is chronic activation of the immune and inflammatory cascade in genetically susceptible individuals. Some food supplements such as specific peptides and probiotics have been investigated and shown the potential for the treatment of UC. The purpose of this study is to investigate the therapeutic effect and potential mechanism of tetrapeptide from maize (TPM) and probiotic treatment on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC in C57BL/6J mice. Our results indicated that the therapeutic effects of TPM and probiotics are positively associated with a reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokine levels and restoration of the gut microbiota. Treatment with TPM or probiotics effectively alleviated the adverse effects of UC, including weight loss, shortened colon length, and colon and kidney tissue damage in mice. Additionally, both TPM and probiotics significantly reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels and oxidative stress in UC mice, and the effect was more pronounced when both were used together. Moreover, co-treatment with TPM and probiotics increased the diversity of gut microbes in UC mice, reduced the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes (F/B) and increased the abundance of bacterial species, including Muribaculaceae, Alistipes, Ligilactobacillus and Lactobacillus, and has been shown to be beneficial for a variety of pathological conditions.

Abstract
There is an increasingly urgent call to shift industrial processes from fossil fuel feedstock to sustainable bio-based resources. This change becomes of high importance considering new budget requirements for a carbon-neutral economy. Such a transformation can be driven by traditionally used plants that are able to produce large amounts of valuable biologically relevant secondary metabolites. Tobacco plants can play a leading role in providing value-added products in remote areas of the world. In this study, we propose a non-exhaustive list of compounds with potential economic interest that can be sourced from the tobacco plant. In order to optimize extraction methodologies, we first analyzed their physico-chemical properties using rapid solubility tests and high-resolution microfractionation techniques. Next, to identify an optimal extraction for a selected list of compounds, we compared 13 different extraction method-solvent combinations. We proceeded with profiling some of these compounds in a total of six varieties from Nicotiana tabacum and Nicotiana rustica species, identifying the optimal variety for each. The estimated expected yields for each of these compounds demonstrate that tobacco plants can be a superior source of valuable compounds with diverse applications beyond nicotine. Among the most interesting results, we found high variability of anatabine content between species and varieties, ranging from 287 to 1699 µg/g. In addition, we found that CGA (1305 µg/g) and rutin (7910 µg/g) content are orders of magnitude lower in the Burley variety as compared to all others.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Achillea erba-rotta subsp. moschata (Wulfen) I.Richardson (syn. A. moschata Wulfen) (Asteraceae) is an alpine endemic plant whose aerial parts are harvested by the locals mainly for the digestive properties. Despite its widespread use, few studies have been conducted to date to verify its bioactivity. AIM OF THE STUDY The purpose of the work was to meet the tradition confirming with experimental data the popular belief that the consumption of this species offers beneficial effects to the gastrointestinal system. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using Soxhlet apparatus, the dried aerial parts of A. erba-rotta subsp. moschata were successively extracted with petroleum ether (PET), dichloromethane (DCM) and methanol (MeOH). The essential oil (EO) was obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus while infusion (AE) was prepared following the traditional local recipe. Their chemical characterization was performed by various techniques including SPME-GC/MS, GC/MS and HPLC/MS-MS. An in vitro biological screening was carried out. The influence of AE on lipid digestion was monitored by titration of free fatty acids (FFA) during pancreatic lipase activity with the pH-stat method. For all extracts and EO, the anti-Helicobacter pylori activity was assessed by the broth microdilution method, the influence on cell viability was evaluated against NCI-N87, OE21 and Caco-2 cell lines and a preliminary toxicity evaluation was done using Brine Shrimp lethality (BSL) assay. The anti-inflammatory potential was evidenced by interleukin IL-1- induced IL8 expression on Caco-2 cells. RESULTS AE increased by 15% the FFA releasing compared to the pancreatic lipase alone. PET, DCM and MeOH extracts as well as AE and EO were considered active against the growth of both antimicrobial susceptible and resistant strains of H. pylori with MIC values starting from 16 μg/mL. PET and DCM (IC50 = 89 μg/mL and 96 μg/mL, respectively, against Caco-2 cell line) extracts showed the high effect on cell viability while the EO reduced in 50% of cell viability at 1.48 μL/mL (NCI-N87 cells), 1.42 μL/mL (OE21 cells), and 3.44 μL/mL (Caco-2 cells) corroborating the BSL results. In different degrees, all extracts and EO inhibited the IL-1β-stimulated IL-8 production in Caco-2 cells. CONCLUSIONS The obtained data are encouraging and provide a scientific basis for the traditional use of A. erba-rotta subsp. moschata as a digestive agent although they need to be further corroborated by studies involving the investigation of both the in vivo activities and the role of the compounds detected in the extracts.

Abstract
Food and agro-industrial processing produce a great amount of side-stream and waste materials that are excellent sources of functional bioactive molecules such as phenolic compounds that recover them can be beneficial not only for food sustainability but also to human for many industrial applications such as flavor compounds and therapeutic applications such as antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. The treatments and extraction techniques have major effects on the recovery of bioactive compounds. Along with the conventional extraction methods, numerous innovative techniques have been evolved and have been optimized to facilitate bioactive extraction more efficiently and sustainably. In this work, we have summarized the state-of-the-art technological approaches concerning novel extraction methods applied for five most produced crops in Italy; Grape Pomace (GP), Tomato Pomace (TP), Olive Pomace (OP), Citrus Pomace (CP), and Spent Coffee Grounds (SCG), presenting the extraction yield and the main class of phenolic classes, with the focus on their biological activity as an anti-inflammatory in vitro and in vivo studies via describing their molecular mechanism of action.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous clinical syndrome. Recent studies examine different strategies to modulate its related complications. Chlorogenic acid, as a bioactive component of green coffee (GC), is known to have great health benefits. The present study aimed to determine the effect of GC on lipid profile, glycemic indices, and inflammatory biomarkers. Forty-four PCOS patients were enrolled in this randomized clinical trial of whom 34 have completed the study protocol. The intervention group (n = 17) received 400 mg of GC supplements, while the placebo group (n = 17) received the same amount of starch for six weeks. Then, glycemic indices, lipid profiles, and inflammatory parameters were measured. After the intervention period, no significant difference was shown in fasting blood sugar, insulin level, Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, Interleukin 6 or 10 between supplementation and placebo groups. However, cholesterol and triglyceride serum levels decreased significantly in the intervention group (p < 0.05). This research confirmed that GC supplements might improve some lipid profiles in women with PCOS. However, more detailed studies with larger sample sizes are required to prove the effectiveness of this supplement.

Abstract
Simple Summary Immune stress and high stocking density stress are two major concerns in poultry production, as they can greatly impair the productive and reproductive performance of chickens with serious economic consequences. Chlorogenic acid has been widely used as a feed additive in poultry production due to its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral activities. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary chlorogenic acid supplementation on growth performance, antioxidant function, and immune response in broiler breeders exposed to immune stress and high stocking density stress. Our study highlights that chlorogenic acid increased feed intake, downregulated serum corticosterone levels, and altered the immune and antioxidant functions of broiler breeders exposed to immune stress or high stocking density stress. Dietary inclusion of 1 g/kg chlorogenic acid could be used to increase feed intake of broiler breeders and alleviate the effects of immune stress and exposure to high stocking density in poultry. Abstract The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary chlorogenic acid supplementation on the growth performance, antioxidant function, and immune response of broiler breeders exposed to immune stress or high stocking density stress. The test was divided into two stress models. For the immune stress test, 198 birds were distributed into three experimental treatments with six replicates per treatment. The treatments were: (1) saline control (birds injected with saline and fed basal diet), (2) LPS group (birds injected with 0.5 mg LPS/kg body weight and fed basal diet), and (3) CGA + LPS group (birds injected with LPS and fed basal diet supplemented with 1 g/kg CGA. LPS was intraperitoneally injected from day 14, and then daily for 10 days. For the high stocking density stress model, 174 birds were distributed into three experimental treatments with six replicates per treatment. The treatments were: (1) controls (birds fed basal diet and raised at a stocking density of 14 broilers per m2), (2) high-density group (birds fed with basal diet and raised at a stocking density of 22 broilers per m2), and (3) high density + CGA group (birds fed with 1 g/kg CGA and raised at a stocking density of 22 broilers per m2). Results showed that LPS injection and high stocking density significantly decreased the body weight and feed intake of broiler breeders, while CGA supplementation increased feed intake of broiler breeders under LPS injection and high stocking density stress. Moreover, LPS injection and high stocking density increased the concentration of corticosterone in serum, and CGA addition remarkably downregulated serum corticosterone levels. The GSH level decreased with LPS injection and CGA increased the GSH concentration in the intestines of immune-stressed broiler breeders. LPS injection promoted the production of circulating proinflammatory cytokines (serum IL-1β and TNF-α) by 72 h after LPS injection. Dietary supplementation with CGA prevented the increase in serum TNF-α caused by LPS. These results suggest that dietary inclusion of 1 g/kg CGA could increase the feed intake of broiler breeders and alleviate the effects of inflammatory mediator stress and exposure to high stocking density.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the protective effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA) on broilers subjected to dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced intestinal damage. One hundred and forty-four 1-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler chicks were allocated into one of 3 groups with 6 replicates of eight birds each for a 21-d trial. The treatments included: 1) Control group: normal birds fed a basal diet; 2) DSS group: DSS-treated birds fed a basal diet; and 3) CGA group: DSS-treated birds fed a CGA-supplemented control diet. An oral DSS administration via drinking water was performed from 15 to 21 d of age. Compared with the control group, DSS administration reduced 21-d body weight and weight gain from 15 to 21 d, but increased absolute weight of jejunum and absolute and relative weight of ileum (P < 0.05). DSS administration elevated circulating D-lactate concentration and diamine oxidase activity (P < 0.05), which were partially reversed when supplementing CGA (P < 0.05). The oral administration with DSS decreased villus height and villus height/crypt depth ratio, but increased crypt depth in jejunum and ileum (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, DSS administration increased serum glutathione level and jejunal catalase activity and malonaldehyde accumulation, but decreased jejunal glutathione level (P < 0.05). In contrast, feeding a CGA-supplemented diet normalized serum glutathione and jejunal malonaldehyde levels, and increased jejunal glutathione concentration in DSS-administrated birds (P < 0.05). Additionally, CGA supplementation reduced ileal malonaldehyde accumulation in DSS-treated birds (P < 0.05). DSS challenge increased levels of serum interferon-γ and interleukin-6, jejunal interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-6, and ileal interleukin-1β and interleukin-6 when compared with the control group (P < 0.05). The elevated serum interferon-γ and ileal interleukin-6 levels were normalized to control values when supplementing CGA (P < 0.05). The results suggested that CGA administration could partially prevent DSS-induced increased intestinal permeability, oxidative damage, and inflammation in broilers, although it did not improve their growth performance and intestinal morphology.

Abstract
Depression is a psychiatric disorder affecting the lives of patients and their families worldwide. It is an important pathophysiology; however, the molecular pathways involved are not well understood. Pharmacological treatment may promote side effects or be ineffective. Consequently, efforts have been made to understand the molecular pathways in depressive patients and prevent their symptoms. In this context, animal models have suggested phytochemicals from medicinal plants, especially phenolic acids, as alternative treatments. These bioactive molecules are known for their antioxidant and antiinflammatory activities. They occur in some fruits, vegetables, and herbal plants. This review focused on phenolic acids and extracts from medicinal plants and their effects on depressive symptoms, as well as the molecular interactions and pathways implicated in these effects. Results from preclinical trials indicate the potential of phenolic acids to reduce depressive-like behaviour by regulating factors associated with oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, autophagy, and deregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, stimulating monoaminergic neurotransmission and neurogenesis, and modulating intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
Plant polyphenol supplementation may improve fish health in aquaculture systems. To assess the potential benefits and function mechanism of plant polyphenols in aquaculture, fish were fed either basal feed (CON) or the basal feed supplemented with 500 mg/kg of curcumin (CUR), oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC), chlorogenic acid (CGA), or resveratrol (RES). After an 8-week feeding experiment, blood samples were used to analyze the concentrations of biochemical indices. Gut samples were collected to evaluate microbiota, short chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels, and gene expression. The results indicated that polyphenol administration reduced serum glucose and insulin. Lysozyme activity was enhanced by OPC and CGA, and superoxide dismutase activity was increased by CUR, OPC, and CGA. The gut microbial structure of the RES group was segregated from that of the CON, and the genus Bacteroides was identified as a potential biomarker in the CUR, CGA, and RES groups. Total gut SCFA increased in the CUR, CGA, and RES groups. A strong correlation was observed between Bacteroides and SCFA. In conclusion, dietary polyphenols have distinct anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-hyperglycemic activities that may be closely associated with their microbiota-modulation effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A traditionally prepared aqueous extract (= decoction) of Houttuynia cordata Thunb (Yu xing cao) (HC) is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to treat inflammatory disease. Previous chemical and biological studies on HC have mainly focused on organic extracts rather than the aqueous decoction, which is the traditional formulation. PURPOSE The study aimed to investigate whether the chemical composition of HC aqueous decoction (HCD) varies with geographical sourcing, to investigate the mechanism of action of HCD, and to determine if chemical variation impacts on HCDs anti-inflammatory activity. METHOD Sixteen samples of HC were purchased from Sichuan, Hubei and Anhui provinces in the People's Republic of China (PRC) and were prepared by the traditional decoction method to yield their corresponding HCDs. A Quality Control (QC) sample was prepared by combining individual HCD extracts. HCDs were analysed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The anti-inflammatory activities associated with intestinal barrier function of HCD were studied by tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) activated Caco-2 monolayers in vitro and in vivo using Dextran Sulfate Sodium (DSS)-induced murine colitis. Proteins involved in inflammation, mRNA levels, disease severity scores, and histology involved in intestinal inflammation were analysed. RESULTS HCD samples exhibited different chemical fingerprints and three regional outliers were identified by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Fifteen phytochemical metabolites were identified and quantified. HCD showed in vitro anti-inflammatory activity, enhancing zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), occludin, interleukin (IL)-10 and decreasing IL-1β, IL-6 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) via an EGFR-dependent mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK 1/2) signaling pathway. This beneficial effect on intestinal inflammation was also seen in the in vivo colitis model at a molecular level in colonic tissues. CONCLUSION This study shows that the test HCDs were chemically different, resulting in different levels of activity on intestinal barrier function and inflammation. Moreover, a "Daodi" product showed the greatest biological activity in this study, thus validating the importance of the "Daodi" quality material in TCM and supporting the traditional used of HCD for the treatment of inflammation.

Abstract
Chlorogenic acid (CA) and sodium alginate (SA) each have good therapeutic effects on ulcerative colitis (UC) owing to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. This study aimed to investigate the effects of CA alone and in combination with SA on inflammatory cells and UC mice. In the Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 inflammatory cell model, Nitric oxide (NO) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were significantly lower after treatment with CA plus SA than with CA alone. In the DSS-induced UC mouse model, compared with CA alone, CA plus SA showed a better ability to alleviate weight loss, reduce the disease activity index (DAI), improve the colonic mucosa, reduce the expression of inflammatory factors in the serum and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in colonic tissue, increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels, protect the intestinal mucosa and regulate the abundance of Actinobacteriota, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides, Subdoligranulum and Streptococcus. Thus, CA plus SA can improve the therapeutic efficacy of CA in UC by regulating inflammatory factors, oxidative stress, and the intestinal flora and by protecting ulcerative wounds. These findings broaden our understanding of the role of the combination of SA and CA in enhancing the effects of CA on UC and provide strategies for prevention and treatment.

Abstract
To investigate the influence of molecular weight (Mw) on the anti-inflammatory activity of β-D-glucan from Ganoderma lucidum, ultrasonic irradiation was applied to treat the β-D-glucan (GLP, 2.42 × 106 g/mol) solution to obtain two degraded fractions with molecular weight of 6.53 × 105 g/mol (GLPC) and 3.49 × 104 g/mol (GLPN). Structural analysis proved that the degraded fractions possessed similar repeated units with the original β-D-glucan. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity studies showed that all fractions could significantly inhibit LPS-induced expression of cytokines including TNF-α, IL-8, MIF and MCP-1 in Caco-2 cells at certain concentrations. Moreover, GLPC and GLPN exhibited better anti-inflammatory activity than GLPC. The intestinal anti-inflammatory activity evaluated by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)—induced colitis mice model showed that intragastric administration of GLPN (lower Mw fraction) could significantly recover inflamed tissues of mice. Compared with GLP and GLPC, GLPN exhibited stronger ability to inhibit the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6). The results revealed that Mw of β-D-glucan influenced its anti-inflammatory activity and decreasing of Mw would improve the activity, which provided evidence for the potential use of β-D-glucan from G. lucidum as anti-colitis ingredients.

Abstract
Actinidia eriantha is a unique germplasm resource for kiwifruit breeding. Genetic diversity and nutrient content need to be evaluated prior to breeding. In this study, we looked at the metabolites of three elite A. eriantha varieties (MM-11, MM-13 and MM-16) selected from natural individuals by using a UPLC-MS/MS-based metabolomics approach and transcriptome, with a total of 417 metabolites identified. The biosynthesis and metabolism of phenolic acid, flavonoids, sugars, organic acid and AsA in A. eriantha fruit were further analyzed. The phenolic compounds accounted for 32.37% of the total metabolites, including 48 phenolic acids, 60 flavonoids, 7 tannins and 20 lignans and coumarins. Correlation analysis of metabolites and transcripts showed PAL (DTZ79_15g06470), 4CL (DTZ79_26g05660 and DTZ79_29g0271), CAD (DTZ79_06g11810), COMT (DTZ79_14g02670) and FLS (DTZ79_23g14660) correlated with polyphenols. There are twenty-three metabolites belonging to sugars, the majority being sucrose, glucose arabinose and melibiose. The starch biosynthesis-related genes (AeglgC, AeglgA and AeGEB1) were expressed at lower levels compared with metabolism-related genes (AeamyA and AeamyB) in three mature fruits of three varieties, indicating that starch was converted to soluble sugar during fruit maturation, and the expression level of SUS (DTZ79_23g00730) and TPS (DTZ79_18g05470) was correlated with trehalose 6-phosphate. The main organic acids in A. eriantha fruit are citric acid, quinic acid, succinic acid and D-xylonic acid. Correlation analysis of metabolites and transcripts showed ACO (DTZ79_17g07470) was highly correlated with citric acid, CS (DTZ79_17g00890) with oxaloacetic acid, and MDH1 (DTZ79_23g14440) with malic acid. Based on the gene expression, the metabolism of AsA acid was primarily through the L-galactose pathway, and the expression level of GMP (DTZ79_24g08440) and MDHAR (DTZ79_27g01630) highly correlated with L-Ascorbic acid. Our study provides additional evidence for the correlation between the genes and metabolites involved in phenolic acid, flavonoids, sugars, organic acid and AsA synthesis and will help to accelerate the kiwifruit molecular breeding approaches.

Abstract
Phytonutrients are natural bioactive components present in the daily diet that can exert a positive impact on human health. Studies have shown that phytonutrients may act as antioxidants and improve metabolism after being ingested, which help to regulate physiological processes and prevent metabolic disorders and diseases. However, their efficacy is limited by their low bioavailability. The gut microbiota is symbiotic with humans and its abundance and profile are related to most diseases. Interestingly, studies have shown that the gut microbiota is associated with the metabolism of phytonutrients by converting them into small molecules that can be absorbed by the body, thereby enhancing their bioavailability. Furthermore, phytonutrients can modulate the composition of the gut microbiota, and therefore improve the host's health. Here, we focus on uncovering the mechanisms by which phytonutrients and gut microbiota play roles in health, and the interrelationships between phytonutrients and gut microbiota were summarized. We also reviewed the studies that reported the efficacy of phytonutrients in human health and the future directions.

Abstract
In this study, pulsed electric field (PEF—3 kV/cm; 5 kJ/kg) pretreatment was used to intensify the extractability of valuable intracellular compounds from artichoke by-products during a subsequent aqueous extraction (solid–liquid ratio = 1:10 g/mL, T = 20 °C; t = 120 min). Total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS) and HPLC–PDA analysis of the artichoke extract (AE) and the biological effects on human cell lines were determined. Chlorogenic acid was found to be the most abundant phenolic compound (53% of the TPC) in the AE. The extract showed good antioxidant properties in a concentration-dependent manner. The potential biological effects of AE were investigated using THP-1 macrophages stimulated by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) as an in vitro model system of oxidative stress. Reduced reactive oxygen species production upon treatment with AE was found. Moreover, AE was able to reduce the secretion of the pro-inflammatory mediators Interleukin-6 and Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 in LPS-stimulated macrophages, as determined by qRT-PCR and ELISA assays. These results highlighted the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the extracts from PEF-treated artichoke by-products, corroborating their potential application as a source of functional ingredients obtained through a feasible and sustainable process.

Effects of Caffeine and 5-Caffeoylquinic Acid on Blood Cell In Vitro Cytokine Production in Response to Lipopolysaccharide Stimulation. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
Previous in vitro studies the have suggested anti-inflammatory properties of caffeine. Coffee is also rich in phenolic acids with several potential health benefits (chlorogenic acids), mainly 5-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA). The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of caffeine and 5-CQA, using concentrations comparable to typical human consumption, on LPS-induced cytokine production in whole blood in vitro cultures. Whole blood samples (n = 10) were stimulated for 24 h with LPS in the presence of caffeine or 5-CQA. The concentrations of various cytokines, malondialdehyde (MDA) and adenosine-3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) were determined in the culture media. Significant effects of caffeine were found only for the stimulated production of TNF-α (p = 0.014) and cAMP (p = 0.001). However, only the highest caffeine concentration (50 μM) induced lower TNF-α (p = 0.016) and higher cAMP (p = 0.006) levels in comparison to the control. The 5-CQA only influenced the stimulated production of IL-6 (p = 0.002), with lower values for the highest 5-CQA concentrations (2 μM: p = 0.012; 20 μM: p < 0.001). Neither caffeine (p = 0.227) nor 5-CQA (p = 0.259) influenced MDA concentrations. In conclusion, both caffeine and 5-CQA exerted limited in vitro anti-inflammatory effects. For caffeine, these effects were attained with high physiological concentrations. However, for 5-CQA, supraphysiological concentrations were needed.

Abstract
Background Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used as an "immune booster” for disease prevention and clinical treatment since ancient China. However, many studies were focused on the organic herbal extract rather than aqueous herbal extract (AHE; decoction). Due to the COVID-19 pandemics, this study tended to decipher phytochemical contents in the decoction of herbs and derived bioactivities (e.g., anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties). As prior works revealed, the efficacy of Parkinson's medicines and antiviral flavonoid herbs was strongly governed by their bioenergy-stimulating proficiency. Methods Herbal extracts were prepared by using a traditional Chinese decoction pot. After filtration and evaporation, crude extracts were used to prepare sample solutions for various bioassays. The phytochemical content and bioactivities of AHEs were determined via ELISA microplate reader. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were used as a novel platform to evaluate bioenergy contents with electron-transfer characteristics for antiviral drug development. Significant findings Regarding 18 TCM herbal extracts for the prevention of SARS and H1N1 influenza, comparison on total polyphenol, flavonoid, condensed tannins and polysaccharides were conducted. Moreover, considerable total flavonoid contents were detected for 11 herb extracts. These AEHs were not only rich in phytonutrient contents but also plentiful in anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Herbs with high polyphenol content had higher antioxidant activity. Forsythia suspensa extract expressed the highest inhibition against nitric oxide production for anti-inflammation. MFC bioenergy-stimulating studies also revealed that top ranking COVID-19 efficacious herbs were both bioenergy driven and electron mediated. That is, electron transfer-controlled bioenergy extraction was significant to antiviral characteristics for anti-COVID-19 drug development.

Abstract
The demand of foods with high antioxidant capacity have increased and research on these foods continues to grow. This review is focused on chlorogenic acids (CGAs) from green coffee, which is the most abundant source. The main CGA in coffee is 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA). Coffee extracts are currently the most widely used source to enhance the antioxidant activity of foods. Due to the solubility of CGAs, their extraction is mainly performed with organic solvents. CGAs have been associated with health benefits, such as antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activity, and others that reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. However, the biological activities depend on the stability of CGAs, which are sensitive to pH, temperature, and light. The anti-inflammatory activity of 5-CQA is attributed to reducing the proinflammatory activity of cytokines. 5-CQA can negatively affect colon microbiota. An increase in anthocyanins and antioxidant activity was observed when CGAs extracts were added to different food matrices such as dairy products, coffee drinks, chocolate, and bakery products. The fortification of foods with coffee CGAs has the potential to improve the functionality of foods.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a multifactorial condition characterized by a destructive immune response that failed to be attenuated by common regulatory mechanisms which reduce inflammation and promote mucosa healing. The inhibition of CD26, a multifunctional glycoprotein that controls the immune response via its dipeptidyl peptidase (DP) 4 enzyme activity, was proven to have beneficial effects in various autoimmune inflammatory diseases. The polarization of macrophages into either pro-inflammatory M1 or anti-inflammatory M2 subclass is a key intersection that mediates the immune-inflammatory process in UC. Hence, we hypothesized that the deficiency of CD26 affects that process in the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced model of UC. We found that mRNA expression of M2 markers arginase 1 and Fizz were increased, while the expression of M1 marker inducible NO synthase was downregulated in CD26−/− mice. Decreased STAT1 mRNA, as well as upregulated pSTAT6 and pSTAT3, additionally support the demonstrated activation of M2 macrophages under CD26 deficiency. Finally, we investigated DP8 and DP9, proteins with DP4-like activity, and found that CD26 deficiency is not a key factor for the noted upregulation of their expression in UC. In conclusion, we demonstrate that CD26 deficiency regulates macrophage polarization toward the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype, which is driven by STAT6/STAT3 signaling pathways. This process is additionally enhanced by the reduction of M1 differentiation via the suppression of proinflammatory STAT1. Therefore, further studies should investigate the clinical potential of CD26 inhibitors in the treatment of UC.

Abstract
Evodiamine (Evo) is an alkaloid that can be extracted from the berry fruit Evodia rutaecarpa and has been reported to exert various pharmacological effects, such as antidiarrheal, antiemetic and antiulcer effects. In vivo, the potential effects of Evo were investigated in a mouse model of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)‑induced ulcerative colitis (UC) and in adenomatous polyposis coli (Apc)MinC/Gpt C57BL/6 mice with colorectal cancer (CRC), where the latter harbours a point‑mutation in the Apc gene. Evo suppressed the degree of weight loss and colon shortening induced by DSS, decreased the disease activity index value and ameliorated the pathological alterations in the colon of mice with UC as examined via H&E staining of colon tissues. In addition, Evo decreased the number and size of colonic tumors in ApcMinC/Gpt mice. Proteomics (colon tissues), ELISA (colon tissues and serum) and western blotting (colon tissues) results revealed that Evo inhibited NF‑κB to mediate the levels of various cytokines, including, in the DSS‑induced UC model, IL‑1β, IL‑2, IL‑6, IL‑8, TNF‑α, IFN‑γ (ELISA of colon tissues and serum), NF‑κB, IKKα+β, IκBα, S100a9, TLR4 and MyD88 (western blotting of colon tissues), and, in the colorectal cancer model, IL‑1β, IL‑2, IL‑6, IL‑15, IL‑17, IL‑22, TNF‑α (ELISA of colon tissues and serum), NF‑κB, IKKα+β, IκBα and S100a9 (western blotting of colon tissues), to achieve its anti‑inflammatory and antitumor effects. In vitro, Evo also reduced the viability of the colon cancer cell line SW480, inhibited mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP detection), caused G2/M‑phase arrest (cell cycle detection) and suppressed the translocation of phosphorylated‑NF‑κB from the cytoplasm into the nucleus (immunofluorescence of p‑NF‑κB). Theoretical evidence (MD simulations) suggest that Evo may bind to the ordered domain (α‑helix) of NF‑κB to influence this protein. The protein secondary structure changes were analyzed by the cpptraj module in Amber. In addition, these data provide experimental evidence that Evo may be an effective agent for treating UC and CRC.

Abstract
It is essential to understand the ultrasound-induced changes in assembly of proteins and polyphenols into non covalent nanocomplex. β-Lactoglobulin (LG) and chlorogenic acid (CA) with various biological activities can be combined to form food-grade nanocomplexes. This study systematically explored the role of high-intensity ultrasound pretreatment on the binding mechanisms of LG and CA, and the potential biological function for embedding curcumin (Cur). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that ultrasound treatment could destroy the structure of LG, and the particle size of the protein was reduced to<50 nm. The change in secondary structure of the protein by ultrasound treatment could be revealed by the fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and fluorescence spectra. Besides, it was found that LG and CA were combined to form a complex under the hydrophobic interaction, and CA was bound in the internal cavity of LG with a relatively extended conformation. The result demonstrated that the ratio of Cur embedded in the ultrasonic sample could be effectively increased by 7% - 10%, the particle size in the emulsion was smaller, and the dispersion was more stable. This work contributes to the development of protein-polyphenol functional emulsion systems with the ability to deliver Cur.

Abstract
Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a phenolic compound that is widely distributed in honeysuckle, Eucommia, fruits and vegetables. It has various biological functions, including cardiovascular, nerve, kidney, and liver protection, and it exerts a protective effect on human health, according to clinical research and basic research. The intestine and brain are two important organs that are closely related in the human body. The intestine is even called the "second brain" in humans. However, among the many reports in the literature, an article systematically reporting the regulatory effects and specific mechanisms of CGA on the intestines and brain has not been published. In this context, this review uses the regulatory role and mechanism of CGA in the intestine and brain as the starting point and comprehensively reviews CGA metabolism in the body and the regulatory role and mechanism of CGA in the intestine and brain described in recent years. Additionally, the review speculates on the potential biological actions of CGA in the gut-brain axis. This study provides a scientific theory for CGA research in the brain and intestines and promotes the transformation of basic research and the application of CGA in food nutrition and health care.

Abstract
Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen that causes gastrointestinal (GI) candidiasis closely associated with intestinal inflammation and dysbiosis. Drug resistance, side effects of available antifungal agents, and the high recurrence of candidiasis highlight the need for new treatments. We investigated the effects of hydroethanolic extracts of licorice root (LRE) and walnut leaf (WLE) on GI colonization by C. albicans, colon inflammation, and gut microbiota composition in C57BL/6 female mice. Oral administration of LRE and WLE alone or in combination once daily for 12 days before C. albicans infection and then for 5 days after infection significantly reduced the level of C. albicans in the feces of gastrointestinal infected mice as well as colonization of the GI tract, both extracts showing robust antifungal activity. Although total bacterial content was unaffected by the extracts (individually or combined), the abundance of protective bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium spp. and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, increased with the combination, in contrast to that of certain pathobiont bacteria, which decreased. Interestingly, the combination induced a more robust decrease in the expression of proinflammatory genes than either extract alone. The anti-inflammatory activity of the combination was further supported by the reciprocal increase in the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines and the significant decrease in enzymes involved in the synthesis of proinflammatory eicosanoids and oxidative stress. These findings suggest that LRE and WLE have synergistic effects and that the LRE/WLE combination could be a good candidate for limiting GI candidiasis and associated inflammation, likely by modulating the composition of the gut microbiota. IMPORTANCE The adverse effects and emergence of resistance of currently available antifungals and the high recurrence of candidiasis prompt the need for alternative and complementary strategies. We demonstrated that oral administration of hydroethanolic extracts of licorice root (LRE) and walnut leaf (WLE) separately or in combination significantly reduced the colonization of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract by C. albicans, highlighting a robust antifungal activity of these plant extracts. Interestingly, our data indicate a correlation between LRE and WLE consumption, in particular the combination, and a shift within the gut microbiome toward a protective profile, a decrease in colonic inflammation and prooxidant enzymes, suggesting a synergistic effect. This study highlights the significant prebiotic potential of the LRE/WLE combination and suggests that the health benefits are due, at least in part, to their ability to modulate the gut microbiota, reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, and protect against opportunistic infection.

Abstract
Oxidation is a major cause of meat quality deterioration during broiler production, which leads to undesirable meat color and impaired water holding capacity (WHC), thereby impacting consumer appeal and satisfaction. Chlorogenic acid (CGA), a natural phenolic acid, is regarded as a potential, safer and healthier antioxidant to improve meat quality. To investigate the protective effects of CGA on the meat quality of oxidatively stressed broilers, 240 one-day-old male Cobb broiler chickens were allocated to four treatments: basal diet (control group), basal diet + dexamethasone (DEX) injection (DEX group), basal diet containing 500 mg kg-1 CGA (CGA group), and basal diet containing 500 mg kg-1 CGA + DEX injection (DEX_CGA group). Meat quality, antioxidant capacity, the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway, and metabolomic profile were detected in the breast muscle of broilers. Then, correlation analysis between meat quality and antioxidant capacity, antioxidant-related genes, and metabolites was performed. The results indicated that CGA supplementation improved the growth performance and meat quality traits (pH, WHC, and meat color) and enhanced the antioxidant enzyme activity by activating the Nrf2 pathway in the breast muscle of oxidatively stressed broilers. A total of 619 metabolites were identified, among which 93 differential metabolites were found between control and DEX groups, and 65 differential metabolites were observed between DEX and DEX_CGA groups. Breast metabolic profiles were changed by DEX treatment, while CGA supplementation could normalize the metabolic changes in DEX-challenged broilers. Metabolic pathway analysis revealed that most of the differential metabolites between DEX and DEX_CGA groups were involved in pyrimidine/purine, propanoate and phenylalanine metabolism, primary bile acid biosynthesis, and lysine metabolism, which may contribute to explain the protective effects of CGA on meat quality. Moreover, according to the correlation analysis, four metabolites were identified as potential biomarkers to predict the meat quality. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that CGA is an effective, natural and safe antioxidant to enhance the quality of meat from intensive industrial poultry production.

Abstract
Simple Summary Sheep sperm is extremely sensitive to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and can produce a large amount of ROS during chilling storage, leading to a decline in semen quality. Adding antioxidants is an important method to improve semen quality. Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a kind of plant extract with an antioxidant capacity, which can effectively eliminate free radicals and improve the antioxidant capacity of semen. However, its role in the chilling storage of Hu ram semen is not clear. Therefore, CGA with different concentrations was added to chilling storage extender to investigate its effect on chilled ram sperm. The results of this study revealed that CGA with proper concentration had a positive effect on chilled Hu ram sperm and 0.8 mg/mL CGA had the best effect. Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the addition of chlorogenic acid (CGA) to a sheep semen extender could improve the quality of chilled sheep sperm. Ejaculates (n = 80) were collected from five Hu rams with an artificial vagina. The ejaculates were mixed and divided into five equal parts, diluted with a CGA-free Tris–egg yolk extender (control), or supplemented with 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 mg/mL. The sperm kinematic parameters (viability, progressive motility), functional integrity of plasma membrane and acrosome, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentration and antioxidant parameters (Catalase (CAT), Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), ROS level and Malondialdehyde (MDA) content) were evaluated during storage of the semen. The results indicated that: PM, plasmatic membrane integrity and acrosomal integrity in 0.8 mg/mL CGA were higher (p < 0.05) from day 1 to 5. The ROS level in CGA groups was lower than the control (p < 0.05). CAT, SOD, ATP, and T-AOC were highest at 0.8 mg/mL concentration within 1 to 5 days. The above results indicated that the right concentration of CGA improved the quality of Hu ram sperm during chilling storage.
