Abstract
Postbiotics are innovative tools in animal husbandry, providing eco-friendly solutions for disease management within the industry. In this study, a new postbiotic product was evaluated for its impact on the health of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). In vivo studies were conducted to assess the safety of the Weissella cibaria strains used in postbiotic production. Additionally, this study evaluated the impact of diet supplementation with 0.50% postbiotics on growth performance during a 30-day feeding trial; the gut microbial communities, immunomodulation, and protection against Yersinia ruckeri infection were evaluated. The strains did not harm the animals during the 20-day observation period. Furthermore, the effect of postbiotics on growth performance was not significant (p < 0.05). The treated group showed a significant increase in acid-lactic bacteria on the 30th day of the feeding trial, with counts of 3.42 ± 0.21 log CFU/mL. Additionally, there was an up-regulation of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β in head kidney samples after 48 h of feed supplementation, whereas cytokines IL-10, IL-8, INF-γ, and TNF-α were down-regulated. The findings indicate that rainbow trout fed with postbiotics saw an improvement in their survival rate against Y. ruckeri, with a 20.66% survival improvement in the treated group. This study proves that incorporating postbiotics from two strains of W. cibaria previously isolated from rainbow trout into the diet of fish has immunomodulatory effects, enhances intestinal microbial composition, and improves fish resistance against Y. ruckeri.

Abstract
Aquaculture is a promising food sector to fulfil nutritional requirements of growing human population. Live weight aquaculture production reached up to 114.5 million tonnes in 2018 and it is further expected to grow by 32% by year 2030. Among total aquaculture production, major product harvested is finfish and its contribution has reached 46% in recent years. Frequent outbreaks of infectious diseases create obstacle in finfish production, result in economic losses to the farmers and threaten the sustainability of aquaculture industry itself. In spite of following the best management practices, the use of antibiotics, chemotherapeutics and phytochemicals often become the method of choice in finfish culture. Among these, phytochemicals have shown lesser effect in animal welfare while antibiotics and other chemotherapeutics have led to negative consequences like emergence of drug-resistant bacteria, and accumulation of residues in host and culture system, resulting in quality degradation of aqua products. Making use of probiotics as viable alternative has paved a way for sustainable aquaculture and minimise the use of antibiotics and other chemotherapeutics that pose adverse effect on host and culture system. This review paper elucidates the knowledge about antibiotics and other chemicals, compilation of probiotics and their effects on health status of finfish as well as overall culture environment. Besides, concoction of probiotics and prebiotics for simultaneous application has also been discussed briefly.

Abstract
The fisheries sub-sector of aquaculture-i.e., the pisciculture industry, contributes significantly to a country's economy, employing a sizable proportion of the population. It also makes important contributions to household food security because the current demand for animal protein cannot be fulfilled by harvesting wild fish from riverines, lakes, dams, and oceans. For good pond management techniques and sustaining fish health, the fisherfolk, and the industry require well-established regulatory structures, efficient disease management strategies, and other extended services. In rearing marine fish, infections resulting from disease outbreaks are a weighty concern because they can cause considerable economic loss due to morbidity and mortality. Consequently, to find effective solutions for the prevention and control of the major diseases limiting fish production in aquaculture, multidisciplinary studies on the traits of potential fish pathogens, the biology of the fish as hosts, and an adequate understanding of the global environmental factors are fundamental. This review highlights the various bacterial diseases and their causative pathogens prevalent in the pisciculture industry and the current solutions while emphasising marine fish species. Given that preexisting methods are known to have several disadvantages, other sustainable alternatives like antimicrobial peptides, synthetic peptides, probiotics, and medicinal treatments have emerged to be an enormous potential solution to these challenges.

Abstract
The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) promotes the digestion and absorption of feeds, in addition to the excretion of waste products of digestion. In fish, the GIT is divided into four regions, the headgut, foregut, midgut, and hindgut, to which glands and lymphoid tissues are associated to release digestive enzymes and molecules involved in the immune response and control of host-pathogens. The GIT is inhabited by different species of resident microorganisms, the microbiota, which have co-evolved with the host in a symbiotic relationship and are responsible for metabolic benefits and counteracting pathogen infection. There is a strict connection between a fish's gut microbiota and its health status. This review focuses on the modulation of fish microbiota by feed additives based on prebiotics and probiotics as a feasible strategy to improve fish health status and gut efficiency, mitigate emerging diseases, and maximize rearing and growth performance. Furthermore, the use of histological assays as a valid tool for fish welfare assessment is also discussed, and insights on nutrient absorptive capacity and responsiveness to pathogens in fish by gut morphological endpoints are provided. Overall, the literature reviewed emphasizes the complex interactions between microorganisms and host fish, shedding light on the beneficial use of prebiotics and probiotics in the aquaculture sector, with the potential to provide directions for future research.

Abstract
Microbiome manipulation is gaining fresh attention as a way to mitigate diseases in aquaculture. The commercially farmed seaweed Saccharina japonica suffers from a bacterial-induced bleaching disease, which has major implications for the reliable supply of healthy sporelings. Here, we identify a beneficial bacterium, Vibrio alginolyticus X-2 that significantly reduces the risk of bleaching disease. By combining infection assays and multi-omic analyses, we provide evidence to suggest that the underlying protective mechanisms of V. alginolyticus X-2 involve maintaining epibacterial communities, increasing the gene expression of S. japonica related to immune and stress protection pathways, and stimulating betaine concentrations in S. japonica holobionts. Thus, V. alginolyticus X-2 can elicit a suite of microbial and host responses to mitigate the bleaching disease. Our study provides insights into disease control in farmed S. japonica through the application of beneficial bacteria. IMPORTANCE Beneficial bacteria can elicit a suite of microbial and host responses to enhance the resistance to bleaching disease.

Abstract
In the present article, the possible mitigation of the toxic effect of imidacloprid low-concentration chronic exposure on Danio rerio by the probiotic strain Lactobacillus brevis 47f (1 × 108 CFU/g) was examined. It was found that even sublethal concentration (2500 µg/L) could lead to the death of some fish during the 60-day chronic experiment. However, the use of Lactobacillus brevis 47f partially reduced the toxic effects, resulting in an increased survival rate and a significant reduction of morphohistological lesions in the intestines and kidneys of Danio rerio. The kidneys were found to be the most susceptible organ to toxic exposure, showing significant disturbances. Calculation of the histopathological index, measurement of morphometric parameters, and analysis of principal components revealed the most significant parameters affected by the combined action of imidacloprid and Lactobacillus brevis 47f. This effect of imidacloprid and the probiotic strain had a multidirectional influence on various pro/anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8). Therefore, the results suggest the possibility of further studying the probiotic strain Lactobacillus brevis 47f as a strain that reduces the toxic effects of xenobiotics. Additionally, the study established the possibility of using imidacloprid as a model toxicant to assess the detoxification ability of probiotics on the kidney and gastrointestinal tract of fish.

Abstract
Greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) is a new species in marine aquaculture with high mortalities at the larval stages. The microbiota of amberjack larvae was analyzed using 16S rDNA sequencing in two groups, one added copepod nauplii (Acartia tonsa) in the diet, and one without copepods (control). In addition, antagonistic bacteria were isolated from amberjack larvae and live food cultures. Proteobacteria was the most abundant phylum followed by Bacteroidota in amberjack larvae. The composition and diversity of the microbiota were influenced by age, but not by diet. Microbial community richness and diversity significantly increased over time. Rhodobacteraceae was the most dominant family followed by Vibrionaceae, which showed the highest relative abundance in larvae from the control group 31 days after hatching. Alcaligenes and Thalassobius genera exhibited a significantly higher relative abundance in the copepod group. Sixty-two antagonistic bacterial strains were isolated and screened for their ability to inhibit four fish pathogens (Aeromonas veronii, Vibrio harveyi, V. anguillarum, V. alginolyticus) using a double-layer test. Phaeobacter gallaeciensis, Phaeobacter sp., Ruegeria sp., and Rhodobacter sp. isolated from larvae and Artemia sp. inhibited the fish pathogens. These antagonistic bacteria could be used as host-derived probiotics to improve the growth and survival of the greater amberjack larvae.

Abstract
European sea bass production has increased in recent decades. This increase is associated with an annually rising demand for sea bass, which encourages the aquaculture industries to increase their production to meet that demand. However, this intensification has repercussions on the animals, causing stress that is usually accompanied by dysbiosis, low feed-conversion rates, and immunodepression, among other factors. Therefore, the appearance of pathogenic diseases is common in these industries after immunodepression. Seeking to enhance animal welfare, researchers have focused on alternative approaches such as probiotic application. The use of probiotics in European sea bass production is presented as an ecological, safe, and viable alternative in addition to enhancing different host parameters such as growth performance, feed utilization, immunity, disease resistance, and fish survival against different pathogens through inclusion in fish diets through vectors and/or in water columns. Accordingly, the aim of this review is to present recent research findings on the application of probiotics in European sea bass aquaculture and their effect on growth performance, microbial diversity, enzyme production, immunity, disease resistance, and survival in order to help future research.

Abstract
Intensive fish farming is associated with a high level of stress, causing immunosuppression. Immunomodulators of natural origin, such as probiotics or phytoadditives, represent a promising alternative for increasing the immune function of fish. In this study, we tested the autochthonous trout probiotic strain L. plantarum R2 in a newly developed, low-cost application form ensuring the rapid revitalization of bacteria. We tested continuous and cyclic feeding regimes with regard to their effect on the intestinal immune response and microbiota of rainbow trout. We found that during the continuous application of probiotic feed, the immune system adapts to the immunomodulator and there is no substantial stimulation of the intestinal immune response. During the cyclic treatment, after a 3-week break in probiotic feeding and the reintroduction of probiotics, there was a significant stimulation of the gene expression of molecules associated with both cellular and humoral immunity (CD8, TGF-β, IL8, TLR9), without affecting the gene expression for IL1 and TNF-α. We can conclude that, in aquaculture, this probiotic feed can be used with a continuous application, which does not cause excessive immunostimulation, or with a cyclic application, which provides the opportunity to stimulate the immunity of trout, for example, in periods of stress.

Abstract
In this study, we evaluated to reveal the effects of aqueous methanolic extract of celery (Apium graveolens) on the growth performance, immune responses, and resistance against Vibrio anguillarum in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax). For this purpose, twenty fish (initial mean weight of 4.80 ± 0.06 g) were placed into twelve tanks (400 L) in triplicate and fish were fed with control (C) and three different levels (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 g/kg) of A. graveolens (AG) extract-containing diets (AG0.01, AG0.05, and AG0.1) for 30 days. Blood and tissue (kidney, spleen, and intestine) samples were taken from the fish every 10 days during the study to determine the immune responses of the fish. Respiratory burst activity (RBA) was significantly decreased in the AG0.1 group compared to all other groups on the 10th day of the study (P < 0.05). Significance was noticed in the RBA of fish in all AG groups compared to the C group (P < 0.05) on the 30th day of the experiment Lysozyme activity (LYS) was raised on the 10th day of the study in all celery groups compared to the C group (P < 0.05). No differences in the myeloperoxidase activity (MPO) were observed among the experimental groups (P > 0.05). The final mean weight (FMW) was not affected in any experimental groups (P > 0.05). However, in the AG0.05 group, the specific growth rate (SGR) increased, and the feed conversion ratio (FCR) decreased compared to other groups (P < 0.05). IL-1β in the kidney was highly elevated in the AG0.01 group on the 20th day of the study (P < 0.05). Similar results were observed on IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α expression in the kidney (P < 0.05). Anti-inflammatory responses (IL-10 and TGF-β) also increased in all experimental groups and tissues compared to the C group (P < 0.05). COX-2 was upregulated on the 20th day of the study in all tissues (P < 0.05). At the end of the feeding trial, the survival rate of the AG0.1 group in fish infected with Vibrio anguillarum infection was higher than the C group. Dietary celery extract did not affect growth performance directly but increased innate immune responses and a high survival rate. Overall, compared to the control group, the growth, immunity, and resistance of European seabass fed with a diet containing 0.05 g/kg celery aqueous methanolic extract has been improved, and this could be used as an immunostimulant feed additive.

Abstract
In the early stage of this study, three strains of Lactobacillus with anti-soybean allergy potential were screened: Lactobacillus acidophilus CICC 6081, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Bulgaricus CICC 6103 and Lactobacillus plantarum subsp. Plantarum CICC 20988. The aim of this study was to analyze the desensitization effect of three strains of Lactobacillus administered by gavage to soybean-allergic mice through the differentiation of immune cells in intestinal lymph nodes and the changes to gut microbiota. The results showed that the three strains of Lactobacillus could stimulate the proliferation of dendritic cells (DCs) and regulate the balance of Th1/Th2 differentiation in the MLNs and PPs of soybean-allergic mice. Furthermore, the Th17/Tregs cell-differentiation ratio in the MLNs of the Lactobacillus-treated mice was significantly lower than that of the allergic mice (p < 0.05). Compared to the control group, the Shannon, Sobs and Ace indexes of intestinal microbiota in the allergic mice were significantly increased (p < 0.05), and the proportion of Clostridiales was significantly higher (p < 0.05), which was reversed by Lactobacillus gavage. In conclusion, the three strains of Lactobacillus can inhibit the intestinal mucosal immune response and regulate gut microbiota balance in soybean-allergic mice.

Abstract
Streptococcosis is one of the major threats to Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in most regions of the world. Recently, Enterococcus faecalis has been widely reported to be involved in streptococcosis in O. niloticus in Asia and Africa. This study aimed to isolate beneficial marine bacteria to evaluate their effects on growth, hematological parameters, nonspecific immunity, the gut bacteriome, and streptococcosis prevention efficacy in O. niloticus. A total of 36 marine soil bacteria were isolated, and in vitro screening was conducted to determine their antibacterial activities against fish pathogens. Two antagonistic bacteria were identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, Bacillus haynesii CD223 and Advenella mimigardefordensis SM421. These bacteria were incorporated into fish feed and fed to O. niloticus for 90 days. The application of these strains via incorporation into fish feed significantly promoted growth, improved hematological parameters and immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels, modulated the gut bacteriome by reducing the load of pathogenic Enterococcus spp., and developed disease prevention efficacy in O. niloticus. Furthermore, in vivo assays revealed that the inclusion of extracellular products (ECPs) (at 250 μg mL-1) of CD223 and SM421 with feed significantly enhanced the rate of survival (100%) of O. niloticus from streptococcosis compared to the controls (only 30%). The ECPs of these bacteria also prevented 90 to 100% of fish from developing streptococcosis. These strains could be promising for safe use in O. niloticus farming to prevent and control the emergence of streptococcosis caused by E. faecalis. IMPORTANCE Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the most economically important cultured fish species throughout the world. Streptococcosis is a significant threat to global Nile tilapia farming. Enterococcus faecalis has recently emerged as an important pathogen of streptococcosis in Asia and Africa. The application of antibiotics and probiotics and vaccination are the major ways to combat streptococcosis. However, the extensive use of antibiotics leads to the development of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic as well as environmental bacteria, which is a great threat to public health. There is no study on preventing streptococcosis caused by E. faecalis using beneficial bacteria. For the first time, the present study demonstrated that two marine bacteria, Bacillus haynesii strain CD223 and Advenella mimigardefordensis strain SM421, have great potential for controlling streptococcosis in Nile tilapia. These bacteria also enhanced the growth, improved hematological parameters and IgM levels, and positively modulated the gut bacteriome of Nile tilapia.

Abstract
The channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) farming industry is the largest and one of the oldest aquaculture industries in the United States. Despite being an established industry, production issues stemming from disease outbreaks remain problematic for producers. Supplementing fish diets with probiotics to enhance the immune system and growth potential is one approach to mitigating disease. Although considerable laboratory data demonstrate efficacy, these results do not always translate to natural modes of disease transmission. Hence, the present work was conducted in the laboratory but incorporated flow-through water from large catfish pond production systems, allowing for natural exposure to pathogens. Two feeding trials were conducted in an 18-tank aquaria system housing two different sizes, 34.8 ± 12.5 g and 0.36 ± 0.03 g, of channel catfish. Channel catfish in the first trial were fed three experimental diets over six weeks. Commercial diets were top-coated with two selected spore-forming Bacillus spp. probiotics, Bacillus velezensis AP193 (1 × 106 CFU g−1) and BiOWiSH (3.6 × 104 CFU g−1), or a basal diet that contained no dietary additive. In the second eight-week trial, diets were top-coated with BiOWiSH at three concentrations (1.8, 3.6, and 7.3 × 104 CFU g−1), along with one basal diet (no probiotic). At the completion of these studies, growth performance, survival, hematocrit, blood chemistry, and immune expression of interleukin 1β (il1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (tnf-α), interleukin-8 (il8), transforming-growth factor β1 (tgf-β1), and toll-like receptor 9 (tlr9) were evaluated using qPCR. Trial results revealed no differences (p > 0.05) among treatments concerning growth, survival, or hematological parameters. For immune gene expression, interesting trends were discerned, with substantial downregulation observed in B. velezensis AP193-fed fish for il1β, tnf-α, and tlr9 expression within splenic tissue, compared to that of the basal and BiOWiSH diets (p < 0.05). However, the results were not statistically significant for anterior kidney tissue in the first trial. In the second trial, varied levels of probiotic inclusion revealed no significant impact of BiOWiSH’s products on the expression of il1β, tnf-α, il8, and tgf-β1 in both spleen and kidney tissue at any rate of probiotic inclusion (p > 0.05). Based on these findings, more research on utilizing probiotics in flow-through systems with natural infection conditions is crucial to ensure consistency from a controlled laboratory scale to real-world practices.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of multi-species probiotic on growth, hematological status, intestinal microbes, and intestinal morphology of mrigal (Cirrhinus cirrhosus). The mrigal fries (average weight 0.51 g) were reared for 60 days by supplementing multi-species probiotics containing Bacillus spp. (1 × 109 cfu/mL) and Lactobacillus spp. (1 × 1011 cfu/mL) in the raising water at doses of 0 (control), 0.5, and 1.0 mL/L. The results indicated that fish reared with multi-species probiotics showed significantly higher growth performance and feed efficiency where the survival rate was similar in all cases. Accordingly, significant higher red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) were counted from the fish reared with multi-species probiotic. There was a considerable difference in bacterial microbiota between the experimental and control group. Multi-species probiotics significantly enhanced the length, width, and villus area. Several immune response indicators like fattening of intestinal mucosal fold, width of lamina propria, the width of enterocytes, and abundance of goblet cells were also increased significantly in fish that received multi-species probiotics. This study revealed that multi-species probiotics can significantly contribute to the growth of mrigal through upgrading intestinal microbiota and morphology, which can be suggested as an eco-friendly growth stimulator in mrigal farming.

Abstract
In the present study, juvenile striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), a freshwater fish species, have been chronically exposed to a salinity gradient from freshwater to 20 psu (practical salinity unit) and were sampled at the beginning (D20) and the end (D34) of exposure. The results revealed that the intestinal microbial profile of striped catfish reared in freshwater conditions were dominated by the phyla Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Verrucomicrobia. Alpha diversity measures (observed OTUs (operational taxonomic units), Shannon and Faith's PD (phylogenetic diversity)) showed a decreasing pattern as the salinities increased, except for the phylogenetic diversity at D34, which was showing an opposite trend. Furthermore, the beta diversity between groups was significantly different. Vibrio and Akkermansia genera were affected differentially with increasing salinity, the former being increased while the latter was decreased. The genus Sulfurospirillium was found predominantly in fish submitted to salinity treatments. Regarding the host response, the fish intestine likely contributed to osmoregulation by modifying the expression of osmoregulatory genes such as nka1a, nka1b, slc12a1, slc12a2, cftr, and aqp1, especially in fish exposed to 15 and 20 psu. The expression of heat shock proteins (hsp) hsp60, hsp70, and hsp90 was significantly increased in fish reared in 15 and 20 psu. On the other hand, the expression of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) were inhibited in fish exposed to 20 psu at D20. In conclusion, the fish intestinal microbiota was significantly disrupted in salinities higher than 10 psu and these effects were proportional to the exposure time. In addition, the modifications of intestinal gene expression related to ion exchange and stressful responses may help the fish to adapt hyperosmotic environment. Abstract
Aquaculture plays an increasingly significant role in improving the sustainability of global fish production. This sector has been intensified with the advent of new husbandry practices and the development of new technology. However, the increasing intensification and indiscriminate commercialized farming has enhanced the vulnerability of cultivated aquatic species to damage from pathogens. In efforts to confront these various diseases, frequent use of drugs, antibiotics, chemotherapeutics, and agents for sterilization have unintentionally added to the risk of transmission of pathogens and harmful chemical compounds to consumers. Some natural dietary supplements are believed to have the potential to offset this setback in aquaculture. Application of bio-friendly feed additives such as probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics are becoming popular dietary supplements with the potential to not only improve growth performance, but in some cases can also enhance immune competence and the overall well-being of fish and crustaceans. The present review discusses and summarizes the effects of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics application on growth, stress mitigation, microbial composition of intestine, immune system and health condition of aquatic animals in association with existing constraints and future perspectives in aquaculture.

Abstract
As the significance of the gut microbiota has become increasingly realized, a large number of related studies have emerged. With respect to the gut microbial composition of fish, the predominant gut microbes and core gut microbiota have been reported by many researchers. Our understanding of fish gut microbiota, especially its functional roles, has fallen far behind that of terrestrial vertebrates, although previous studies using gnotobiotic zebrafish models have revealed that the gut microbiota performs a significant role in gut development, nutrient metabolism and immune responses. Given that environmental factors of marine habitats are very different from those of freshwater habitats, a distinct difference may exist in the gut microbiota between freshwater and marine fish. Therefore, this review aims to address the advances in marine fish gut microbiota in terms of methodologies, the gut microbial composition, and gnotobiotic models of marine fish, the important factors (host genotype and three environmental factors: temperature, salinity and diet) that drive marine fish gut microbiota, and significant roles of the gut microbiota in marine fish.

Abstract
Microbial colonization is vital for physiological equilibrium in animals. However, the impact of maternal and environmental microbes on microbial succession in the early developmental stages of Macrobrachium rosenbergii remains elusive. In this study, the effects of maternal and environmental microbes on the embryonic and larval microbiota of M. rosenbergii were evaluated by high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were the dominant phyla in the intestine, gonads, and hepatopancreases of maternal prawn. In addition, Actinobacteria was dominant in the intestine while Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Acidobacteria were dominant in gonads of maternal prawn. During the embryonic stages, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes became the dominant phyla. In post-larval stages, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes tended to dominate. In the water, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla at 7, 14, and 21 dph water. Maternal microbes prominently impacted the microbial composition during the embryonic stages. Specifically, microbial colonization during embryonic stages was directly related to the maternal hepatopancreas according to source-tracking models. When the post-larvae developed to 7 days, the high contribution to the larval microbiota mimicked the environment. These results indicated that microbial colonization in embryonic and post-larval stages was attributed to the maternal and environmental microbe community, respectively. This study provides a theoretical basis for microbial community manipulation to promote prawn growth and physiological health in aquaculture.

Abstract
Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria introduced into the gastrointestinal tract through food or water, promoting good health by enhancing the internal microbial balance. Probiotic microbes produce bacteriocins, siderophores, lysozymes, proteases, and hydrogen peroxides, inhibiting the growth of harmful pathogens. Such beneficial bacteria also produce many enzymes such as amylase enzyme by Aeromonas spp., Bacillus subtilis, Bacteridaceae, Clostridium spp., Lactobacillus plantarum, and Staphylococcus sp., and protease and cellulase enzymes by B. subtilis, L. plantarum, and Staphylococcus sp. In aquaculture, probiotics confer several benefits and play important roles in improving growth performances, disease resistance, immunity, health status, intestinal epithelial barrier integrity, gut microbiome, and water quality. In addition, the practical application of probiotics in aquaculture diets could minimize antibiotic side effects. Promoting these feed additives for fish would help to improve their productive performance and feed utilization and, therefore, boost fish production and safeguard human health. This review provides updated information regarding definitions, sources of bacterial probiotics, probiotic use in fish diets against pathogenic bacteria, mechanisms of action, beneficial aspects, and potential applications of probiotics in fish. It is anticipated that these will be of significant value for nutritionists, agricultural engineers, researchers, pharmacists, scientists, pharmaceutical industries, and veterinarians.

Abstract
On intensive fish farms, 10% of the population dies exclusively from pathogens, and Photobacterium damselae subsp. Piscicida (Ph. damselae subsp. Piscicida), the bacteria causing pasteurellosis in marine aquaculture, is one of the major pathogens involved. The objective of this study was to obtain new probiotic strains against pasteurellosis in order to limit the use of chemotherapy, avoiding the environmental repercussions generated by the abusive use of these products. In this study, 122 strains were isolated from the gills and intestines of different marine fish species and were later evaluated in vitro to demonstrate the production of antagonistic effects, the production of antibacterial substances, adhesion and growth to mucus, resistance to bile and resistance to pH gradients, as well as its harmlessness and the dynamic of expression of immune-related genes by real-time PCR after administration of the potential probiotic in the fish diet. Only 1/122 strains showed excellent results to be considered as a potential probiotic strain and continue its characterization against Ph. damselae subsp. piscicida to determine its protective effect and elucidating in future studies its use as a possible probiotic strain for marine aquaculture.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of probiotic and encapsulated Lactobacillus bulgaricus on hematological and immunological factors after lead toxicity in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Two hundred and forty fish weighing about 16 ± 3.8 g were divided randomly in to four groups including two groups which were fed by a diet containing ~ 108 CFU g-1Lactobacillus bulgaricus and encapsulated Lactobacillus bulgaricus bacteria and also the third group diet without Lactobacillus bulgaricus. After 45 days, in addition to probiotic (~ 108 CFU g-1), 500 μg kg of lead nitrate was added to the food of the three groups for 21 days. The fourth group (control) was first fed to the normal diet for 45 days then exposed to Pb. Blood samples were collected at days 45, 52, 59, and 66, and hematological and some immunological parameters were assessed. Results showed that hemoglobin, red blood cells, white blood cells, and lysozyme activity in the two probiotics groups were increased significantly up to 45 day (P < 0.05), but followed by a decreasing trend by adding Pb. Complement and bactericidal activity were enhanced significantly in the bulgaricus group (P < 0.05). Respiratory burst activity at day 45 in group bulgaricus had significant increase (P < 0.05) and decreased in all groups particularly after Pb exposure (P < 0.05). The achieved data shows that microencapsulation of probiotics with alginate-chitosan may be a suitable method to improve the fish condition against heavy metal.

Abstract
Bacillus amyloliquefaciens X030 (BaX030) has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against the fish pathogens Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas veronii. To improve its antibacterial effect, BaX030 was subjected to compound mutagenesis of atmospheric and room temperature plasma (ARTP) and nitrosoguanidine (NTG). The results showed that, compared with the original strain, the production of macrolactin A and oxydifficidin in mutated strain N-11 increased to 39 % and 268 %, respectively. The re-sequencing analysis suggested that there were SNPs and InDels in the gene clusters focused on the sucrose utilization pathway, glycolysis pathway and fatty acid synthesis pathway. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that strain N-11 became thin and long. The qRT-PCR results indicated that the expression of immune factors in the liver or kidney tissue of grass carp increased after feeding with N-11. H&E staining and protection experiments also showed that the mortality and surface symptoms of grass carp infected by the two pathogens were significantly reduced. The study identified a probiotic strain with potential application value in aquaculture production and provided a new strategy for the discovery of new strains with higher antibacterial biological activity.

Abstract
This study aimed to isolate and identify probiotic bacteria from the gut of Barbonymus gonionotus and evaluate their effects on growth, hematological parameters, and breeding performances of the host. Five probiotic bacteria viz. Enterococcus xiangfangensis (GFB-1), Pseudomonas stutzeri (GFB-2), Bacillus subtilis (GFB-3), Citrobacter freundii (GFB-4), and P. aeruginosa (GFB-5) were isolated and identified using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Application of a consortium of probiotic strains (1-3 × 1.35 × 109 CFU kg-1) or individual strain such as GFB-1 (1.62 × 109 CFU kg-1), GFB-2 (1.43 × 109 CFU kg-1), GFB-3 (1.06 × 109 CFU kg-1), GFB-4 (1.5 × 109 CFU kg-1) or GFB-5 (1.43 × 109 CFU kg-1feed) through feed significantly improved growth, histological and hematological parameters and reproductive performances of B. gonionotus compared to untreated control. Moreover, the application of these probiotics significantly increased gut lactic acid bacteria and activities of digestive enzymes but did not show any antibiotic resistance nor any cytotoxicity in vitro. The highest beneficial effects on treated fishes were recorded by the application of GFB-1, GFB-2, GFB-3, and a consortium of these bacteria (T2). This is the first report of the improvement of growth and health of B. gonionotus fishes by its gut bacteria.

Abstract
Over the last decades, aquaculture production increased rapidly. The future development of the industry highly relies on the sustainable utilization of natural resources. The need for improving disease resistance, growth performance, food conversion, and product safety for human consumption has stimulated the application of probiotics in aquaculture. Probiotics increase growth and feed conversion, improve health status, raise disease resistance, decrease stress susceptibility, and improve general vigor. Currently, most probiotics still originate from terrestrial sources rather than fish. However, host-associated (autochthonous) probiotics are likely more persistent in the gastrointestinal tract of fish and may, therefore, exhibit longer-lasting effects on the host. Probiotic candidates are commonly screened in in vitro assays, but the transfer to in vivo assessment is often problematic. In conclusion, modulation of the host-associated microbiome by the use of complex probiotics is promising, but a solid understanding of the interactions involved is only in its infancy and requires further research. Probiotics could be used to explore novel ingredients such as chitin-rich insect meal, which cannot be digested by the fish host alone. Most importantly, probiotics offer the opportunity to improve stress and disease resistance, which is among the most pressing problems in aquaculture.

Abstract
Probiotics have been defined as live microorganisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer health benefits to the host. The use of probiotics in aquaculture is an attractive bio-friendly method to decrease the impact of infectious diseases, but is still not an extended practice. Although many studies have investigated the systemic and mucosal immunological effects of probiotics, not all of them have established whether they were actually capable of increasing resistance to different types of pathogens, being this the outmost desired goal. In this sense, in the current paper, we have summarized those experiments in which probiotics were shown to provide increased resistance against bacterial, viral or parasitic pathogens. Additionally, we have reviewed what is known for fish probiotics regarding the mechanisms through which they exert positive effects on pathogen resistance, including direct actions on the pathogen, as well as positive effects on the host.

Abstract
The outbreak of diseases leading to substantial loss is a major bottleneck in aquaculture. Over the last decades, the concept of using feed probiotics was more in focus to address the growth and health of cultivable aquatic organisms. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of the distinct functionality of archaea from conventional probiotics in nutrient utilization, specific caloric contribution, evading immune response and processing thermal resistance. The prime limitation of conventional probiotics is the viability of desired microbes under harsh feed processing conditions. To overcome the constraints of commercial probiotics pertaining to incompatibility towards industrial processing procedure, a super microbe, archaea, appears to be a potential alternative approach in aquaculture. The peculiarity of the archaeal cell wall provides them with heat stability and rigidity under industrial processing conditions. Besides, archaea being one of the gut microbial communities participates in various health-oriented biological functions in animals. Thus, the current review devoted that administration of archaea in aquafeed could be a promising strategy in aquaculture. Archaea may be used as a potential probiotic with the possible modes of functions and advantages over conventional probiotics in aquafeed preparation. The present review also provides the challenges associated with the use of archaea for aquaculture and a brief outline of the patents on archaea to highlight the various use of archaea in different sectors.

Abstract
In jawed vertebrates, adaptive immune responses are enabled by T cells. Two lineages were characterized based on their T cell receptor (TcR) heterodimers, namely αβ or γδ peptide chains, which display an Ig domain-type sequence that is somatically rearranged. γδ T cells have been less extensively characterized than αβ and teleost fish, in particular, suffer from a severe scarcity of data. In this paper, we worked on the well-known model, the European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax, to broaden the understanding of teleost γδ-T cells. The T cell receptor chain (TR) γ transcript was expressed at a later developmental stage than TRβ, suggesting a layered appearance of fish immune cells, and the thymus displayed statistically-significant higher mRNA levels than any other organ or lymphoid tissue investigated. The polyclonal antibody developed against the TRγ allowed the localization of TRγ-expressing cells in lymphoid organs along the ontogeny. Cell positivity was investigated through flow cytometry and the highest percentage was found in peripheral blood leukocytes, followed by thymus, gut, gills, spleen and head kidney. Numerous TRγ-expressing cells were localized in the gut mucosa, and the immunogold labelling revealed ultrastructural features that are typical of T cells. At last, microalgae-based diet formulations significantly modulated the abundance of TRγ+ cells in the posterior intestine, hinting at a putative involvement in nutritional immunity. From a comparative immunological perspective, our results contribute to the comprehension of the diversity and functionalities of γδ T cells during the development of a commercially relevant marine teleost model.

Abstract
The Seriola genus includes species of worldwide commercial importance due to its rapid growth and easy adaptability to confinement conditions. However, like other fish species, large mortalities occur during their early life stages, where the main problems are caused by opportunistic bacteria. Disease control strategies are thus urgently needed. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of phage vB_Pd_PDCC-1 during the early development of longfin yellowtail (Seriola rivoliana), as well as its effect on microbial communities. This broad-host-range phage was added to the culture every 3 days starting from the egg-stage until 12 days after hatching (DAH) at a concentration of 1.41×1010 plaque-forming units (PFU) per mL and at a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 1. The results showed positive effects (p<0.05) on egg hatching, survival, growth, and pigmentation area in treated larvae. Moreover, high-throughput sequencing analysis of 16S rRNA genes showed that phage administration did not produce significant changes (p>0.05) in the composition and structure of the associated microbiota. However, sequences affiliated to the Gammaproteobacteria class were displaced by those belonging to the Alphaproteobacteria class over time regardless of the treatment received. At the family level, there was a decrease in Rhodobacteraceae, Pseudoalteromonadaceae, and Flavobacteriaceae in both groups over time. To our best knowledge, this study represents the first attempt to evaluate the effect of a phage as a biological control agent during ontogenetic development of longfin yellowtail larvae. KEY POINTS: • Phages can be used against proliferation of Vibrio in fish cultures. • Seriola includes several important commercial fish species due to its rapid growth. • Phages do not cause significant changes in the associated microbiota.

Abstract
A completely randomized experimental design carried out to investigate the effects of different levels of Pediococcus acidilactici (PA) including 0 (basal diet as a control diet), 1 × 106, 2 × 106, 4 × 106, and 8 × 106 colony-forming unit (CFU) per gram of the diet for 60 days on the mucosal immunity responses, growth, and reproductive performance, in zebrafish, Danio rerio (with mean weigh ± SE: 120 ± 10 mg). The obtained results revealed that the best growth and reproduction indices were related to the concentration of 4 × 106 CFU PA g-1 diet (P < 0.05). The maximum activities of mucosal immune responses including total protein, alternative complement system, IgM, and lysozyme were observed in the fish fed with 4 × 106 CFU PA g-1 diet (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the maximum alkaline phosphatase activity of skin mucus was recorded in the fish fed with 8 × 106 CFU PA g-1 diet (P < 0.05). Fish fed with 4 × 106 CFU PA g-1 diet had the highest villus length and width of the intestine (P < 0.05). Supplementing the diet with 4 × 106 CFU PA g-1 diet more significantly enhanced Cyp19a gene expression in comparison with this in other groups. Hence, PA with a concentration of 4 × 106 CFU g-1 diet can be considered as a proper level of probiotic for improving the health, growth, and reproductive performance of the D. rerio.

Abstract
In this review, we summarize and discuss the trends and supporting findings in scientific literature on the gut mucosa immune role in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.). Overall, the purpose is to provide an updated overview of the gastrointestinal tract functional regionalization and defence barriers. A description of the available information regarding immune cells found in two immunologically-relevant intestinal compartments, namely epithelium and lamina propria, is provided. Attention has been also paid to mucosal immunoglobulins and to the latest research investigating gut microbiota and dietary manipulation impacts. Finally, we review oral vaccination strategies, as a safe method for sea bass vaccine delivery.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of early fecal microbial transfer (FMT) on the microflora of recipient piglets, where Yorkshire newborn piglets and Min sows (an indigenous pig breed in China) were used as the fecal recipients and donors, respectively, to reveal the changes in immunity and development-related functions of the intestinal mucosa driven by FMT. The recipient group was inoculated with fecal microbial fluids from days 1 to 10. On day 21, the relative abundance of the Proteobacteria was reduced; the concentrations of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the jejunal mucosa, and that of IgG in the ileal mucosa of the recipient group, were increased (P < 0.05). On day 40, the relative abundance of the Firmicutes in the recipient group was increased, while that of Bacteroides was decreased. The concentrations of IgG and IgM in the ileal mucosa of the recipient group were increased. FMT protected the intestine by modulating the antimicrobial peptides of the intestinal mucosa (P < 0.05). The results of this study revealed that early FMT can improve the gut microbiota, intestinal mucosal immunity, and intestinal development-related functions of Yorkshire piglets.

Abstract
The giant river prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, is an economically important freshwater prawn. The cultivation of zoea larvae is crucial for the success of the M. rosenbergii industry. In this study, we surveyed the microbial community diversity and structure associated with M. rosenbergii zoeae at different stages of larval development. Samples of zoea larvae from different developmental stages were collected and subjected to high-throughput DNA sequencing. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria were the dominant phyla in all six sample groups. At the genus level, the relative abundance of Bacillus decreased, and that of Enterobacter increased with the growth of the zoeae. This may have been related to the intestinal development of the zoea larvae. The microbial diversity of M. rosenbergii zoea larvae decreased significantly with development. The beta diversity analysis showed that the closer the developmental stage of M. rosenbergii, the more similar the structure of the associated bacterial communities.

Abstract
The use of low fishmeal/fish oil in marine fish diets affects dietary essential fatty acids (EFAs) composition and concentration and, subsequently, may produce a marginal deficiency of those fatty acids with a direct impact on the fish intestinal physiology. Supplementation of essential fatty acids is necessary to cover the requirements of the different EFAs, including the ones belonging to the n-6 series, such as arachidonic acid (ARA). ARA, besides its structural role in the configuration of the lipid classes of the intestine, plays an important role in the functionality of the gut-associated immune tissue (GALT). The present study aimed to test five levels of dietary ARA (ARA0.5 (0.5%), ARA1 (1%), ARA2 (2%), ARA4 (4%), and ARA6 (6%)) for European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles in order to determine (a) its effect in selected distal intestine (DI) lipid classes composition and (b) how these changes affected gut bacterial translocation rates and selected GALT-related gene expression pre and post challenge. No differences were found between distal intestines of fish fed with the graded ARA levels in total neutral lipids and total polar lipids. However, DI of fish fed with the ARA6 diet presented a higher (P < 0.05) level of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and sphingomyelin (SM) than those DI of fish fed with the ARA0.5 diet. In general terms, fatty acid profiles of DI lipid classes mirrored those of the diet dietary. Nevertheless, selective retention of ARA could be observed in glycerophospholipids when dietary levels are low (diet ARA0.5), as reflected in the higher glycerophospholipids-ARA/dietary-ARA ratio for those animals. Increased ARA dietary supplementation was inversely correlated with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) content in lipid classes, when data from fish fed with the diets with the same basal composition (diets ARA1 to ARA6). ARA supplementation did not affect intestinal morphometry, goblet cell number, or fish survival, in terms of gut bacterial translocation, along the challenge test. However, after the experimental infection with Vibrio anguillarum, the relative expression of cox-2 and il-1β were upregulated (P < 0.05) in DI of fish fed with the diets ARA0.5 and ARA2 compared with fish fed with the rest of the experimental diets. Although dietary ARA did not affect fish survival, it altered the fatty acid composition of glycerophospholipids and the expression of pro-inflammatory genes after infection when included at the lowest concentration, which could be compromising the physical and the immune functionality of the DI, denoting the importance of ARA supplementation when low FO diets are used for marine fish.

Abstract
The effects of skin wounds on the intestinal barrier function and the beneficial effects of the dietary administration of Shewanella putrefaciens (known as SpPdp11) in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) were studied. Two replicates of fish were fed a commercial diet (control, CON) or CON diet enriched with 109 cfu g-1 SpPdp11 (SP diet) for 30 days. After this time, half of the fish were sampled, while the others were injured below the lateral line (wounded fish, W) and fed the same diets for an extra week before sampling (CON + W and SP + W groups). The intestinal histology and gene expression of different genes relevant for the intestinal barrier function were studied. The results showed that injured fish had a disordered enterocyte nucleus disposition, a more intense infiltration of mixed leucocytes and a thicker lamina propria in the intestine compared to the control fish. However, the fish in the SP + W group did not present these pathological symptoms in the intestine. No significant variations in the number of goblet cells were detected among the different experimental groups. Pro-inflammatory cytokines (colony-stimulating factor receptor 1, CSF1R, myeloperoxidase, MPO and interleukin-1β, IL-1β), mucins (intestinal mucin, IMUC and mucin 2, MUC2), and immunoglobulin T heavy chain (IGHT) were up-regulated, while tight junction protein occludin was down-regulated in the intestine from fish of the CON + W group. Similarly, the dietary administration of SpPdp11 markedly depressed the gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, MUC2 and IGHT, but increased the gene expression of anti-inflammatory cytokine transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and the tight junction proteins tricellulin and occluding after wounding. In brief, the skin wounds provoked an intestinal inflammatory response that included changes in the mucus layer and tight junction disruptions. Besides this, preventive administration of SpPdp11 alleviated the intestinal dysfunctions caused by skin wounds in gilthead seabream.

Abstract
Aquaculture and fisheries have provided protein sources for human consumption for a long time, but diseases have induced declines in product benefits and raised concerns, resulting in great losses to these industries in many countries. The overuse of antibiotics for the treatment of diseases has increased the chemical concentrations in culture systems and weakened the natural immunity of aquatic organisms. Concerns regarding the detrimental effects of antibiotics on the environment and human health due to residual antibiotic-related issues encourage the development of reliable, environmental and health safety methods, such as vaccines, probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics and phytobiotics, for protection against disease and for reducing and possibly eliminating disease occurrence. Immunity has been effectively enhanced by pro-, pre-, and synbiotics, which confer strong protection and reduce the risks associated with stressors and disease outbreaks in culture systems. These agents confer several benefits, including enhancing both host growth and immune responses against pathogens, while sustaining health and environmental stability, and their use is thus widely accepted. Alterations in gene expression in individual cells could serve as an indicator of the immunity and growth rate of aquatic animals after pro-, pre- and synbiotic feeding. This review addresses the potential use of pro, pre- and synbiotics as immunostimulants for improved aquaculture management and environmental health and chronicles the recent insights regarding the application of pro-, pre- and synbiotics with special emphasis on their immunomodulatory and antioxidative responses based on gene expression changes. Furthermore, the current review describes the research gaps and other issues that merit further investigation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of intestinal microbial manipulation by dietary probiotic supplementation on digestive enzyme activity, immune-related gene transcription, intestinal structure alteration, and viability against pathogenic challenge in olive flounder. Similar-sized flounders (14.92 ± 0.21 g) were divided into three groups and supplemented with a control (without probiotic) or 1 × 108 CFU/g diet of each of Bacillus sp. SJ-10 (ProB) and Lactobacillus plantarum (ProL) for eight weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, the estimated intestinal microbial richness (Chao1) and diversity (Shannon) demonstrated a significant (P < 0.05) abundance in the ProB group (484.80 ± 88.75, 5.08 ± 0.17) compared to the ProL (285.32 ± 17.78, 4.54 ± 0.09) and control groups (263.23 ± 20.20, 4.30 ± 0.20). A similar alteration phenomenon was also found at the phylum level, with a higher abundance of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Acidobacteria. Trypsin and lipase activities were elevated in both the ProB and ProL groups compared to the control, but amylase was only higher in the ProB group. The expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6 were significantly higher in the ProB group than in the other two groups. There was a significant increase in transcription of IL-10 in both the ProB and ProL groups compared to the control. The length of villi and microvilli of probiotic-fed olive flounder was increased but was not significantly different from the control group. In an in vivo challenge experiment with Streptococcus iniae (1 × 108 CFU/mL), the survival rates of the ProB and ProL groups were 29.17% and 12.50%, respectively, when control mortality reached 100%. Therefore, intestinal microbiota manipulation by probiotic supplementation increased the richness of the bacterial population, digestive enzyme activity, intestinal immune gene transcription, and infectious disease protection in olive flounder.

Abstract
Probiotic-feeding continues to be a promising strategy to control the bacterial pathogens in aquaculture. A new Pediococcus pentosaceus strain (SL001) was isolated from 1000s of soil samples, which exhibited wide antimicrobial spectrum of against fish pathogens, involving Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas veronii, Aeromonas sobria, Edwardsiella tarda, Lactococcus garvieae, and Plesiomonas shigelloide. The challenge test against A. hydrophila showed that the survival rate of SL001-supplemented group was significantly higher than that of control group (P < 0.05). Moreover, SL001 could stably colonize in gut of grass carp and increased mucus-secreting goblet cells and extended intestinal villi could be observed in SL001-supplemented group (P < 0.05). Feeding with SL001 supplemented diet could significantly enhance the growth rate (P < 0.05) and markedly affect gut microbiota structure of grass carps, resulting in reduced potential pathogens and increased potential probiotics. Furthermore, feeding grass carps with SL001 caused the up-regulated expression of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1 and IGF-2) and down-regulated expression of myostatin (MSTN-1 and MSTN-2) (P < 0.05), which probably also account for the increased growth rate of SL001-fed group. Meanwhile, relative mRNA expression levels of immune-related genes in liver, spleen, and head kidney were analyzed in grass carps after feeding for 30 days with SL001 supplemented diets. In all three immune organs, the expression levels of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and complement 3 (C3) were significantly increased (P < 0.05), whereas the interleukin-8 (IL-8) was down-regulated (P < 0.05). Besides, whole genome sequencing revealed several probiotics properties of SL001, including organic acid synthesis, bacteriocin synthesis (coagulin), superoxide dismutase, and digestive enzymes. In conclusion, P. pentosaceus SL001 which could enhance immunity and promoter growth rate of grass carps, is prospective to be used as a dietary probiotic in freshwater fish aquaculture.

Abstract
Early colonization in the gut by probiotics influences the progressive development and maturity of antioxidant and immune system functionality in the future. This study investigated the impact of orally administrated Lactobacillus delbrueckii (LAB) during the suckling phase on future antioxidant and immune responses of the host, using a piglet model. One hundred neonatal piglets received saline (CON) or LAB at the amounts of 1, 2, 3, and 4 mL at 1, 3, 7, and 14 d of age, respectively. The piglets were weaned at the age of 21 d and fed until the age of 49 d. Serum, liver, and intestinal samples were obtained at 21, 28, and 49 d of age. The results showed that LAB tended to decrease serum 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine concentration and decreased the concentration of serum and hepatic malondialdehyde, but increased the activity of hepatic glutathione peroxidase on days 21, 28, and 49. The concentrations of secretory immunoglobulin A and some inflammatory cytokines and chemokines were increased (P < 0.05) in the intestinal mucosa of LAB-treated piglets on days 21, 28, and 49 compared to that of CON piglets. Likewise, protein expression of cyclooxygenase 2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase in the intestine of LAB-treated piglets was increased (P < 0.05) during the whole period. These results indicate that administration of LAB to the suckling piglet could improve antioxidant capacity and stimulate intestinal immune response, and these long-lasting effects are also observed up to 4 weeks after weaning. A proper utilization of LAB to neonates would be beneficial to human and animal's future health.

Abstract
Lactobacillus, the major genus of lactic acid bacteria group, plays functional roles in the human body, for example, convert sugars to lactic acid. They are the significant microbiota which can be found at a number of human body sites, such as the digestive system, urinary system, and genital system. A number of Lactobacillus species are often used as probiotics and can benefit host health when administered in adequate amounts. Due to their diverse functional characteristics, it is essential to have identification and high-resolution typing techniques to support the need in health and nutritional research of Lactobacillus species. In this study, we took advantages of both targeted and untargeted metabolomic technologies by using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (MS) in combination with a linear ion trap-Orbitrap hybrid MS, to investigate their capability and performance in deciphering the subtle metabolic difference in four closely related Lactobacillus species/strains. First, we evaluated the selected reaction monitoring (SRM) and high-resolution MS data for metabolite quantitation. Then the acquired data quality was further evaluated via the number of metabolites detected, the coefficient variation (CV) distribution, signal intensity distribution and so on. The established platforms were eventually applied to differentiate four Lactobacillus species in identical growth conditions. The proposed workflow demonstrated the capability of targeted and untargeted metabolomics in differentiating closely related bacterial strains/species.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the effects of dietary mannan oligosaccharides (MOS), Pediococcus acidilactici or their conjunction as a synbiotic in low fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO) based diets on European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) disease resistance and gut health. For that purpose, sea bass juveniles were fed one of 6 diets containing different combinations of MOS (Biomos® and Actigen©; Alltech, Inc., Kentucky, USA) and Pediococcus acidilactici (BAC, Bactocell®; Lallemand Inc., Cardiff, UK) replacing standard carbohydrates as follows (MOS (%)/BAC (commercial recommendation): high prebiotic level (HP) = 0.6/0, low prebiotic level (LP) = 0.3/0, only probiotic (B) = 0/+, high prebiotic level plus probiotic (HPB) = 0.6/+, low prebiotic level plus probiotic (LPB) = 0.3/+, control (C) = 0/0 for 90 days. After 60 and 90 days of feeding trial, fish were subjected to an experimental infection against Vibrio anguillarum. Additionally, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) gut patterns of immunopositivity and major histocompatibility complex class II (MHCII), transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), regulatory T-cell subset (CD4+T lymphocytes) and effector T cell (CD8α+T lymphocytes) gene expression patterns in gut by in situ hybridization were evaluated after 90 days of feeding. The effects of both additives on posterior gut through Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT) gene expression was also studied. Fish fed the prebiotic and its combination with P. acidilactici presented increased weight regardless of the dose supplemented after 90 days of feeding, however no effect was detected on somatic indexes. For posterior gut, morphometric patterns and goblet cells density was not affected by MOS, P. acidilactici or its combination. Anti-iNOS and anti-TNFα gut immunopositivity patterns were mainly influenced by MOS supplementation and not by its combination with P. acidilactici. MHCII-β, TCR-β, CD4 and CD8-α positive cells distribution and incidence was not affected by diet. Fish fed HP dose presented a clear up-regulation of TNF-α, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), CD4 and IL10, whereas P. acidilactici dietary supplementation increased the number of interleukin-1β (IL1β) and COX-2 gene transcripts. Synbiotic supplementation resulted in a reduction of MOS-induced gut humoral proinflammatory response by increasing the expression of some cellular-immune system related genes. Fish mortality after V. anguillarum infection was reduced in fish fed LPB and LP diets compared to fish fed the non-suppelmented diet after 90 days of feeding. Thus, overall pointing to the combination of a low dose of MOS and P. acidilactici as synbiont (LPB) as a viable tool to potentiate European sea bass juvenile's growth and disease resistance when supplemented in low FM and FO diets.

Abstract
Over the last few decades, the contribution of aquaculture to animal protein production has increased enormously, and the sector now provides almost half of the fish and shellfish consumed worldwide, making it a major food producer. Nevertheless, many factors, including infections, pollution, and stress, may result in significant economic losses. The aquaculture industry will not be totally successful without the therapeutic and preventive means to control all these factors. Antibiotics (long used in aquaculture practice) have tended to aggravate the problem by increasing antibiotic resistance. Concomitantly, probiotics have widely been suggested as eco-friendly alternatives to antibiotics. However, the way in which probiotics are applied in aquaculture is a key factor in their favorable performance. The aim of this review was to examine the current state of probiotics administration through the water in finfish aquaculture. The review also attempts to cover the research gaps existing in our knowledge of this administration mode, and to suggest the issues that need to be investigated in greater depth.

Abstract
A complex and dynamic community of microorganisms, play important roles within the fish gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Of the bacteria colonizing the GI tract, are lactic acid bacteria (LAB) generally considered as favorable microorganism due to their abilities to stimulating host GI development, digestive function, mucosal tolerance, stimulating immune response, and improved disease resistance. In early finfish studies, were culture-dependent methods used to enumerate bacterial population levels within the GI tract. However, due to limitations by using culture methods, culture-independent techniques have been used during the last decade. These investigations have revealed the presence of Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Leuconostoc, Enterococcus, Streptococcus, Carnobacterium, Weissella, and Pediococcus as indigenous species. Numerous strains of LAB isolated from finfish are able to produce antibacterial substances toward different potential fish pathogenic bacteria as well as human pathogens. LAB are revealed be the most promising bacterial genera as probiotic in aquaculture. During the decade numerous investigations are performed on evaluation of probiotic properties of different genus and species of LAB. Except limited contradictory reports, most of administered strains displayed beneficial effects on both, growth-and reproductive performance, immune responses and disease resistance of finfish. This eventually led to industrial scale up and introduction LAB-based commercial probiotics. Pathogenic LAB belonging to the genera Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, Carnobacterium, and Lactococcus have been detected from ascites, kidney, liver, heart, and spleen of several finfish species. These pathogenic bacteria will be addressed in present review which includes their impacts on finfish aquaculture, possible routes for treatment. Finfish share many common structures and functions of the immune system with warm-blooded animals, although apparent differences exist. This similarity in the immune system may result in many shared LAB effects between finfish and land animals. LAB-fed fish show an increase in innate immune activities leading to disease resistances: neutrophil activity, lysozyme secretion, phagocytosis, and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α). However, some LAB strains preferentially induces IL-10 instead, a potent anti-inflammatory cytokine. These results indicate that LAB may vary in their immunological effects depending on the species and hosts. So far, the immunological studies using LAB have been focused on their effects on innate immunity. However, these studies need to be further extended by investigating their involvement in the modulation of adaptive immunity. The present review paper focuses on recent findings in the field of isolation and detection of LAB, their administration as probiotic in aquaculture and their interaction with fish immune responses. Furthermore, the mode of action of probiotics on finfish are discussed.

Abstract
The present study aimed to evaluate the individual and combined effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LR) JCM1136 and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis (LL) JCM5805 on the growth, intestinal microbiota, intestinal morphology, immune response and disease resistance of juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). A total of 720 apparently healthy juvenile Nile tilapia (0.20 ± 0.05 g) were randomly divided into four equal groups. Fish were fed with a basal diet (CK) supplemented with JCM1136 (LR), JCM5805 (LL), and JCM1136 + JCM5805 (LR+LL) at 1 × 108 CFU/g basal diet for 6 weeks, followed by a basal diet for 1 week. After 6 weeks of feeding, the LL treatment significantly increased the growth and feed utilization of Nile tilapia when compared with the CK. Light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images of the midgut revealed that probiotic supplementation significantly increased gut microvilli length and microvilli density compared to CK. The transcript levels of several key immune-related genes in the mid-intestine and liver of fish were analyzed by means of quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) at the end of the sixth week. The results showed the following: when compared to CK group, fish in LR had significantly increased transcript levels of IFN-γ, lyzc, hsp70 and IL-1β in the intestine; LL fish showed significantly increased expressions of TNF-α, IFN-γ, lyzc, hsp70 and IL-1β in the intestine and liver; and intestine lyzc, hsp70 and IL-1β and liver TNF-α, IFN-γ, hsp70 and IL-1β were significantly increased in LR+LL fish. Following a 6-week period of being fed probiotics or a control diet, the tilapia were challenged with an intraperitoneal injection of 20 μl of the pathogenic Streptococcus agalactiae (WC1535) (1 × 105 CFU/ml). The survival rates of the probiotic-fed groups were significantly higher than that of the CK group, and the LL group had the highest survival rate. High-throughput sequencing revealed a significantly higher presence of JCM5805 in the guts of LL fish during the period of probiotic application, but this was no longer detected in all LL samples 1 week post cessation of probiotic administration. Cessation of probiotic administration led to disorders of individual gut microbes within the LR and LL groups. Statistical analysis (LEfSe) demonstrated that three phyla, namely, Bacteroidetes, Fusobacteria and Actinobacteria were enriched in the CK group, while the abundance of Proteobacteria was greater in the probiotic-fed fish. At the genus level, Plesiomonas, which includes potential pathogens of fish, were significantly decreased in the probiotic-fed groups. In contrast, a significant increase of Rhizobium and Achromobacter, which can produce a variety of enzymes with cellulolytic and pectolytic activity, were observed in fish fed with probiotics, indicating that dietary probiotics were helpful in the propagation of some probiotic bacteria. Our data revealed that JCM1136 and JCM5805, as a feed additive at 108 CFU/g feed, could improve intestinal morphology, enhance immune status and disease resistance, and affect the gut microbiota of tilapia; thus, these additives could be used as probiotics for juvenile Nile tilapia. JCM5805 was more effective than JCM1136 or the mixture of the two for promoting the growth, enhancing the immune status and disease resistance of tilapia.

Abstract
Interest in fish skin immunity and its associated microbiota has greatly increased among immunologists. The objective of this study is to know if skin ulcers may be associated with changes in the mucus composition and microbial diversity. The abundance of terminal carbohydrates, several enzymes (protease, antiprotease, peroxidase, lysozyme) and total immunoglobulin M levels were evaluated in skin mucus of experimentally ulcered gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.). Furthermore, the composition of the microbiota of ulcered and non-ulcered skin has been determined using Illumina Miseq technology. Significant decreases of terminal abundance of α-D-mannose, α-D-glucose and N-acetyl-galactosamine in skin mucus of ulcered fish, compared to control fish were detected. The levels of IgM and all the tested enzymes in mucus were decreased in ulcered fish (compared to control fish) although the observed decreases were only statistically significant for proteases and antiproteases. Concomitantly, the analysis of the composition of the skin microbiota showed clear differences between ulcered and non-ulcered areas. The genus taxonomic analysis showed that Staphylococcus and Lactobacillus were more abundant in non-ulcered skin whereas in ulcered area were Streptococcus and Granulicatella. Important decreases of the number of sequences related to Alteromonas, Thalassabius and Winogradskyella were detected in ulcered skin whilst slight increases of sequences related to Flavobacterium, Chryseobacterium and Tenacibaculum genera were observed. Overall these results demonstrated that the presence of skin ulcers provide microenvironments that perturb both the mucus composition and microbial biodiversity of this important external surface which seem to be more vulnerable to diseases.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate effects of dietary Lactobacillus delbrueckii (L. delbrueckii) on immune response, disease resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila), antioxidant capability and growth performance of Cyprinus carpio Huanghe var. 450 fish (mean weight of 1.05 ± 0.03 g) were randomly distributed into five groups that fed diets containing different levels of L. delbrueckii (0, 1 × 105, 1 × 106, 1 × 107 and 1 × 108 CFU g-1) for 8 weeks. The results showed that intestinal immune parameters such as lysozyme, acid phosphatase, and myeloperoxidase activities, immunoglobulin M content, and the survival rate were improved in fish fed with 1 × 106 and 1 × 107 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii. In addition, 1 × 107 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii supplementation down-regulated mRNA levels of TNF-α, IL-8, IL-1β and NF-κBp65, and up-regulated IL-10 and TGF-β mRNA levels in the intestine. The survival rate was significantly (P < 0.05) higher (68.33%) in fish fed 1 × 106 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii than the control diet-fed group (40%) after challenge by A. hydrophila. Fish fed with diet containing 1 × 106 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii showed higher antioxidant enzyme activities such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and lower MDA concentrations than those of the control group (P < 0.05). The relative gene expression (SOD, CAT, GPX) showed the same trend with their activities. In addition, the growth performance was significantly improved in fish fed with the diet containing 1 × 106 and 1 × 107 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii (P < 0.05). These results demonstrated that dietary optimal levels of L. delbrueckii enhanced immunity, disease resistance against A. hydrophila antioxidant capability and growth performance in Cyprinus carpio Huanghe var.
