Accumulation of mercury, cadmium, lead and arsenic in swordfish and bluefin tuna from the Mediterranean Sea: a comparative study

A carbon dots-MnO2 nanosheet-based turn-on pseudochemodosimeter as low-cost probe for selective detection of hazardous mercury ion contaminations in water

Mercury is a highly hazardous element due to its profound toxicity and wide abundance in the environment. Despite the availability of various fluorimetric detection tools for Hg2+, including organic fluorophores and aptasensors, they often suffer from shortcomings like the utilization of expensive chemicals and toxic organic solvents, multi-step synthesis, sometimes with poor selectivity and low sensitivity. Whereas, biomass-derived fluorophores, such as carbon dots (CDs), present themselves as cost-effective and environmentally benign alternatives that exhibit comparable efficacy. Herein, we report a reaction-driven sensing assembly based on CDs, MnO2 nanosheets, and hydroquinone monothiocarbonate (HQTC) for the detection of Hg2+ ions, which relies on the formation of a CDs-MnO2 FRET-conjugate, resulting in the quenching of the intrinsic fluorescence of CDs. In a pseudochemodosimetric approach, the thiophilic nature of mercury was utilized for in-situ generation of the reducing species, hydroquinone from HQTC, resulting in the reduction of MnO2 nanosheets, the release of fluorescent CDs back to the solution. The low limit of detection (LOD) was achieved as 2 ppb (0.01 μM). The probe worked efficiently in real water samples like sea, river with good recovery of spiked Hg2+ and in some Indian ayurvedic medicines as well. Furthermore, solid-phase detection with sodium alginate beads demonstrated the ability of this cost-effective sensing assembly for onsite detection of Hg2+ ions.

Lead and cadmium in blood and tissues of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus L., 1758)

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) levels in blood and tissues of Atlantic bluefin tuna were analysed to gather information regarding their distribution, accumulation and inter-relationships, as well as to examine how sex affects them. In the whole population, the concentration range was from below the detection limit (bone) to 8.512 μg g-1 (liver) for Cd, and from below detection limit (bone and gills) to 0.063 μg g-1 (kidney) for Pb. The median concentration in the muscles (0.008 and 0.029 μg g-1 for Cd and Pb, respectively) was 10 times less than the maximum permitted for consumption. Sex was shown to be an important variable affecting concentrations of Cd in both liver and kidneys, so taking into account sex when interpreting results is highly recommended. The importance of Cd and Pb bioaccumulation in fishery by-products, increasingly important in commercial circuits, is also highlighted.

Determination of Hg and Se in swordfish (Xiphias gladius) from Mediterranean Sea: Implications for nutritional recommendations during pregnancy and childhood

Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) are important marine predators facing potential mercury (Hg) contamination. This study analyzed Hg levels in swordfish muscle tissue from two Mediterranean Sea stocks. Italian specimens showed significantly higher Hg concentrations (1.4 ± 0.8 mg kg-1 ww) than Spanish ones (0.8 ± 0.5 mg kg-1 ww), with many samples exceeding EU's safety limit (1 mg kg-1 ww). Selenium (Se) content and Se:Hg ratios were examined, along with the maximum safe fish meals per month for vulnerable consumers. These results highlight the urgent need for monitoring and mitigation strategies to reduce health risks, especially for susceptible populations.

Potentially toxic elements in different tissues of great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) at a wetland area

Concentrations of 4 potentially toxic elements (As, Cd, Hg, Pb) were investigated in the feather, liver, kidney, and bone of great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo). The tissue samples were taken at the Central Tisza - Jászság Nature Conservation Area in Hungary. They were analysed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The goal of the investigation was to analyse the metal burden of the above-mentioned elements in the various tissues of these wild birds and to provide important information for monitoring the environmental pollution.Amongst the examined potentially toxic elements no statistical gender difference was observed, so the data were not separated based on them during the statistical analysis. The concentration of mercury was the highest in the feather, followed by the liver, kidney, and bone. The lead was detected in the feather with the highest level followed by the kidney, liver, and bone. The cadmium was determined in all investigated tissues with the next descending order: kidney > bone > liver > feather. Highest arsenic concentration was measured in the feather, followed by liver, kidney, and bone with the same concentration.The detected concentrations of the investigated potentially toxic elements in different tissues of great cormorants (feathers, liver, kidney, bone) means that the living area of this birds is not highly contaminated to induce health problems or toxic signs, or even other undesirable effect in the animals.

Health Benefits of Oily Fish: Illustrated with Blue Shark (Prionace glauca), Shortfin Mako Shark (Isurus oxyrinchus), and Swordfish (Xiphias gladius)

Oily fish is a rich source of energy, proteins, essential amino acids, lipids, vitamins, and minerals. Among the macronutrients with the highest contribution are lipids, mainly long-chain omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 LC-PUFA), especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both EPA and DHA play a beneficial role in promoting health and preventing many diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, such as stroke and acute myocardial infarction. They also contribute to the prevention of neurological, metabolic, and immune-system-related diseases, as well as supporting body-weight control. Oily fish consumption is also important at different stages of human life, from conception to old age. For example, DHA plays an important role in brain and retina development during fetal development and in the first two years of life, as it positively influences neurodevelopment, such as visual acuity, and cognitive functions. In contrast with the possible health benefits of the intake of oily fish, the presence of certain chemical pollutants, for example, heavy metals, can be a risk for the health of consumers, mainly in sensitive population groups such as pregnant women and children under 2 years of age. The presence of these pollutants is influenced to a greater extent by fish species, their role in the trophic chain, and their size. However, various studies state that the benefits outweigh the risk of consuming certain species. This review will be focused on the health benefits of the intake of three oily fish species, namely blue shark (Prionace glauca), shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus), and swordfish (Xiphias gladius).

Oocyte dynamics for Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) in the southern Gulf of Mexico: A comparative assessment of Mediterranean spawners using two stereological methods

Although most research focused on the northern Gulf of Mexico for western Atlantic bluefin tuna, the histological records of reproductive activity of this species in the southern Gulf of Mexico (Mexican waters) have been presented for the first time. This work is the first to study oocyte dynamics in Atlantic bluefin tuna caught in the southern Gulf of Mexico by assessing and comparing them with Mediterranean stock (BFT-E) through stereology using two different methods. Regardless of Atlantic bluefin tuna females returning to their respective spawning grounds at different months in the southern Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean, both stocks arrived reproductively inactive and remained in these zones during periods of similar length; they were reproductively active until March for the southern Gulf of Mexico and May for the Mediterranean females. The comparison of the size structure between the two stocks examined using kernel density estimators demonstrated a quite remarkable difference in mean fork lengths between stocks. The ovarian oocyte density, that is, the number of oocytes per gram of ovary, for each gonad stage predicted using the Weibel and Gomez and oocyte packing density (OPD) methods did not significantly differ between stocks and showed that advanced vitellogenic oocytes from spawning-capable females are an appropriate indicator to estimate potential fecundity, presenting values of c. 1273 and ~1355 eggs per gram for the southern Gulf of Mexico and Mediterranean females, respectively. Females caught in Mexican waters (southern Gulf of Mexico) were larger than those caught in the Mediterranean; however, it was demonstrated that the length and weight of females did not affect ovarian oocyte density production. In addition, densities estimated for each gonad stage using W&G and OPD methods did not differ between stocks and presented equal patterns in their oocyte dynamics. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the reproductive biology of Atlantic bluefin tuna, especially in the southern Gulf of Mexico, due to the lack of information regarding this zone, and may allow to support strategies for proper assessment, management, and conservation.

Effects of Age, Fulton's Condition Index (K) and Muscle Fat on Total Mercury Content in Raw, Pre-Canning and Canned Samples of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus)

A total of 30 samples of Atlantic bluefin tuna were analysed for total mercury concentration. Relationships between total mercury content and age, Fulton's condition index (K) and fat content were statistically evaluated. The effect of muscle status (raw, pre-canning, canned) on mercury content was also investigated. The average total mercury content was: 1.185 ± 0.662 mg/kg in raw, 1.481 ± 0.893 mg/kg in pre-canning and 1.393 ± 0.882 mg/kg in canned samples, respectively. Canning promotes a statistically significant increase in the concentration of mercury. The weight of fish, K and fat content are useful tools to estimate the mercury accumulation in Atlantic bluefin tuna. The results of the present study represent a contribution to the assessment of the EU mercury levels in Atlantic bluefin tuna.

Trace elements in Foodstuffs from the Mediterranean Basin-Occurrence, Risk Assessment, Regulations, and Prevention strategies: A review

Trace elements (TEs) are chemical compounds that naturally occur in the earth's crust and in living organisms at low concentrations. Anthropogenic activities can significantly increase the level of TEs in the environment and finally enter the food chain. Toxic TEs like cadmium, lead, arsenic, and mercury have no positive role in a biological system and can cause harmful effects on human health. Ingestion of contaminated food is a typical route of TEs intake by humans. Recent data about the occurrence of TEs in food available in the Mediterranean countries are considered in this review. Analytical methods are also discussed. Furthermore, a discussion of existing international agency regulations will be given. The risk associated with the dietary intake of TEs was estimated by considering consumer exposure and threshold values such as Benchmark dose lower confidence limit and provisional tolerable weekly intake established by the European Food Safety Authority and the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, respectively. Finally, several remediation approaches to minimize TE contamination in foodstuffs were discussed including chemical, biological, biotechnological, and nanotechnological methods. The results of this study proved the occurrence of TEs contamination at high levels in vegetables and fish from some Mediterranean countries. Lead and cadmium are more abundant in foodstuffs than other toxic trace elements. Geographical variations in TE contamination of food crops clearly appear, with a greater risk in developing countries. There is still a need for the regular monitoring of these toxic element levels in food items to ensure consumer protection.

Determination of toxic metals in canned tuna sold in developed and developing countries: Health risk assessment associated with human consumption

This study investigated toxic metal levels in a total of 222 canned tuna sampled from 36 countries (developed and developing) during 2017-2019. For this purpose, four toxic metals (Cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Under the optimized conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) of the instrument ranged from 0.025 to 0.18 and from 0.54 to 0.045 ppb, respectively, with recoveries in the range of 98 %-108 %. Moreover, noncancer risk using the target hazard quotient (THQ) of each of the four toxic metals was assessed, and cancer risk using the target cancer risk (TCR) of inorganic arsenic (iAs) was evaluated. The THQ values of Hg were higher than the limits of safe (THQ ˃1) and TCR showed the carcinogenic risk for iAs for consumers when consuming more than one meal of canned tuna per week.

Trace elements and δ15N values in micronekton of the south-western Indian Ocean

Trace elements and δ¹⁵N values were analysed in micronekton (crustaceans, fishes and squids) sampled in the south-western Indian Ocean. Myctophids were associated with high concentrations of arsenic at La Pérouse and MAD-Ridge seamounts, and with lead and manganese at MAD-Ridge and in the Mozambique Channel. The difference in cadmium, copper and zinc concentrations between micronekton broad categories reflected differing metabolic and storage processes. When significant, negative relationships were found between micronekton body size and trace element concentrations, which can possibly be attributed to differing metabolic activity in young and old individuals, dietary shifts and/or dilution effect of growth. No relationships were found between trace element concentrations and δ¹⁵N values of micronekton (except cobalt which decreased with increasing δ¹⁵N values), since most trace elements are not biomagnified in food webs due to regulation and excretion processes within organisms. All trace element pairs were positively correlated in fishes suggesting regulation processes.

Assessment of trace elements in canned fish and health risk appraisal

Trace elements are dangerous to human health and there is a rising concern about the quality of processed foods in some parts of the world, especially in Iraq. The chemical composition (total sold, moisture, and ash) and concentrations of trace elements in canned fish (Skipjack tuna, Sardines, Tuna fish, Sardines, and Mackerel) from the Kalar market, Iraq were determined by using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer. The ranges obtained for the elements in mg/kg were as follows: Se (0.025–0.77), As (0.02–1.07), B (0.05–0.7), Ag (0.04–0.83), Ba (0.05–0.975), Mg (29.8–37.5), Mn (0.97–2.09), Cu (0.91–3.09), and Zn (5.12–11.7). The studied canned fishes pose no risk with respect to the estimated daily intake of Se, As, B, Ag, Ba, Mg, Mn, Cu, and Zn. The total target hazard quotients for the studied metals from individual fish species (except Fme, Fma, and Fsh) were more than one, which was responsible for noncarcinogenic risks. The target carcinogenic risk value for arsenic was also higher than the standard (10-4) set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. It revealed that the consumption of canned fish causes a chronic cancer risk to humans.

Bioaccumulation of selected trace elements in some aquatic organisms from the proximity of Qeshm Island ecosystems: Human health perspective

In this study selected marine species from north Persian Gulf ecosystems were collected to investigate the concentration of 15 trace elements (Al, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, V, Zn and Hg) in muscle and liver tissues for the purpose of evaluating potential health risks for human consumers. The results indicated that Fe, Zn, Sr, Cu and As are the most abundant TEs in the tissues of the species. The concentration of Cu in P. semisulcatus and As in most investigated species pose the highest risk of exposure. The carcinogenic risk values indicate that As and Ni concentrations in the species are above the acceptable lifetime risk for adults and children in most of the species. The margin of exposure risk approach indicated that the risk of detrimental effects due to dietary Pb intake for age groups is low, except for consumers of T. tonggol.

Mercury and Cadmium Concentrations in Muscle Tissue of the Blue Shark (Prionace glauca) in the Central Eastern Pacific Ocean

Blue sharks (Prionace glauca) are an important resource in Ecuador's fisheries; however, biological and ecological information of this species in the area is scarce. The goal of this study was to determine Hg and Cd concentration levels in muscle tissue, as well as its relationship with size, sex, and sexual maturity stages. A total of 80 specimens (34 females and 46 males) collected from the Ecuadorian longline fishing fleet between June and December 2012 were examined. Sizes for females ranged from 97 to 280 cm total length, with values of Hg between 0.20 to 2.38 mg kg^-1 wet weight (x̄ = 0.71, ± 0.61) and values of Cd between 0.01 and 0.12 mg kg^-1 (x̄ = 0.04, ± 0.02). Sizes for males ranged from 137 to 290 cm TL with values of Hg between 0.17 and 2.94 mg kg^-1 (x̄ = 0.81, ± 0.68) and Cd concentrations between 0.01 and 0.12 mg kg^-1 (x̄ = 0.04, ± 0.03). A Spearman's rank correlation showed a medium positive association between TL and Hg concentrations (ρ = 0.66; p < 0.05), but there was no correlation between TL and Cd concentrations (ρ = 0.00, p < 0.05). Of the analyzed sharks, 46% and 20% had Hg and Cd concentrations, respectively, greater than the limit established by authorities for fishes consumed by humans.

Mediterranean Mercury Assessment 2022: An Updated Budget, Health Consequences, and Research Perspectives

Mercury (Hg) and especially its methylated species (MeHg) are toxic chemicals that contaminate humans via the consumption of seafood. The most recent UNEP Global Mercury Assessment stressed that Mediterranean populations have higher Hg levels than people elsewhere in Europe. The present Critical Review updates current knowledge on the sources, biogeochemical cycling, and mass balance of Hg in the Mediterranean and identifies perspectives for future research especially in the context of global change. Concentrations of Hg in the Western Mediterranean average 0.86 ± 0.27 pmol L^-1 in the upper water layer and 1.02 ± 0.12 pmol L^-1 in intermediate and deep waters. In the Eastern Mediterranean, Hg measurements are in the same range but are too few to determine any consistent oceanographical pattern. The Mediterranean waters have a high methylation capacity, with MeHg representing up to 86% of the total Hg, and constitute a source of MeHg for the adjacent North Atlantic Ocean. The highest MeHg concentrations are associated with low oxygen water masses, suggesting a microbiological control on Hg methylation, consistent with the identification of hgcA-like genes in Mediterranean waters. MeHg concentrations are twice as high in the waters of the Western Basin compared to the ultra-oligotrophic Eastern Basin waters. This difference appears to be transferred through the food webs and the Hg content in predators to be ultimately controlled by MeHg concentrations of the waters of their foraging zones. Many Mediterranean top-predatory fish still exceed European Union regulatory Hg thresholds. This emphasizes the necessity of monitoring the exposure of Mediterranean populations, to formulate adequate mitigation strategies and recommendations, without advising against seafood consumption. This review also points out other insufficiencies of knowledge of Hg cycling in the Mediterranean Sea, including temporal variations in air-sea exchange, hydrothermal and cold seep inputs, point sources, submarine groundwater discharge, and exchanges between margins and the open sea. Future assessment of global change impacts under the Minamata Convention Hg policy requires long-term observations and dedicated high-resolution Earth System Models for the Mediterranean region.

Potential hazards associated with the consumption of Scombridae fish: Infection and toxicity from raw material and processing

Scombridae fish (tuna, bonito, and mackerel) have significant ecological and economic values. They are very appreciated by consumers worldwide for their high-quality flesh and for their high nutritional value. However, consumption of Scombridae fish is potentially hazardous. Indeed, several cases of infections and toxicity linked to the consumption of Scombridae fish as raw, or processed food products have been reported worldwide. In this review, we presented the most common health risks associated with Scombridae fish consumption. Diseases associated with the consumption of these fish are generally infectious or toxic and are caused by biological hazards such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemicals hazards that enter the body through contaminated fish (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, histamine) or by physical contaminants such as heavy metals. The risks of contamination exist throughout the food chain, from primary production to the preparation of products for consumption.

Mercury concentrations and stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) in pelagic nekton assemblages of the south-western Indian Ocean

Mercury (Hg) concentrations and stable isotope values (δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N) were investigated in micronekton collected from La Pérouse and MAD-Ridge seamounts, Reunion Island and the southern Mozambique Channel. Organisms occupying epipelagic habitats showed lower Hg concentrations relative to deeper dwelling benthopelagic ones. Increasing Hg concentrations with increasing body size were recorded in the Mozambique Channel and Reunion Island. Positive relationships were observed between Hg levels and δ¹⁵N values in pelagic nekton assemblages collected at MAD-Ridge seamount and the southern Mozambique Channel, suggesting biomagnification of Hg. Concentrations of Hg in organisms across the south-western Indian Ocean were within the same range of values. Total Hg concentrations depend on a range of factors linked to habitat range, body size and trophic position of the individuals. To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating the patterns of Hg concentrations in pelagic nekton assemblages from the south-western Indian Ocean.

Risk and benefit assessment of seafood consumption harvested from the Pertuis Charentais region of France

Seafood is well recognized as a major source of Long Chain n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (LC n-3 PUFA, especially ecosapentaenoic acid, i.e. EPA and docosaheaxaenoic acid, i.e. DHA) and essential trace elements (As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, and Zn). It is also a source of non-essential trace elements (Ag, Cd, Hg, Pb) that can be deleterious for health even at low concentrations. Edible parts of sixteen species (fish, cephalopods, crustaceans and bivalves) of great importance in the Pertuis Charentais region, one of the main shellfish farming and fishing areas along the french coastline, were sampled in winter and analyzed to determine their fatty acid (FA) composition and trace element concentrations. Based on these analyses, a suite of indices was calculated to estimate risk and benefit of seafood consumption: the n-6/n-3 ratio, the atherogenic index, the thrombogenic index, the EPA + DHA daily recommended portion, as well as the maximum safe consumption. The results showed that fish contributed the most to LC n-3 PUFA supply, while bivalves and crustaceans were more beneficial in essential trace elements. Whatever the species, the concentrations of non-essential elements were not limiting for seafood consumption, as important amounts of the analyzed species can be eaten daily or weekly before becoming hazardous to consumers. Yet, concentrations of Hg in dogfish and seabass can become a concern for frequent seafood consumers (>three meals a week), confirming that varying seafood items is a key point for consumers to optimize the benefits of diverse seafood resources. Considering FA composition, whiting and pilchard are the most beneficial fish species for human diet, while surmullet was the least beneficial one. However, using an index integrating the relative risk due to Hg content, the surmullet appears as one of the most beneficial. This study provides a temporal shot of the quality of marine resources consumed in winter period in the studied area and highlights the complexity of a quantitative risk and benefit assessment with respect to the biochemical attributes of selected seafood.

Tissue Distribution of Mercury and Its Relationship with Selenium in Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus L.)

Mercury (Hg) is an important heavy metal to consider in marine predators, while selenium (Se) has a natural antagonistic effect on this metal in fish. The Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT, Thunnus thynnus) is a pelagic top-level predator of the trophic web and their Hg muscular content is an object of concern in food safety. Nevertheless, little is known about levels of this metal in remaining tissues, which may be important as by-product source, and its relationship with Se. Thus, concentration of both elements in liver, kidney, brain, gill and bone, in addition to muscle, of ABFT were determined. The kidney was the tissue with the highest concentration of Hg (Total-Hg, THg) and Se, and the Se/THg concentration ratio was similar in all tissues, except bone and muscle. The Selenium Health Benefit Value (HBV_Se) was positive in each specimen and tissue, indicating that the Se plays an important role against Hg not only in the muscle.

Hg, As, Cr, Sn, Ni, and Se concentrations in the muscle of little tunny (Euthynnus alletteratus) from the western Algerian stock

Muscle-metal (As, Se, Hg, Sn, Cr, Ni) levels were measured in little tunny (Euthynnus alletteratus) from the western Algerian stock. Relationships between metal levels in the muscle tissues and fish fork length and total weight were examined. The accumulation of metals in muscle tissues varied in the following ascending order: Ni, Cr, Sn, Hg, Se, and As. The range of metal concentrations (mg kg^-1/wet weight) were 1.2561-3.8562 (As), 0.6897-3.4123 (Se), 0.3852-1.4235 (Hg), 0.1569-0.6512 (Sn), 0.1254-0.4002 (Cr), and 0.0719-0.3122 (Ni). Significant variations (t > 1.96, p < 0.05) between metal concentrations were observed in muscle tissues of E. alletteratus. The concentrations of all metals investigated increase as the fish increased in size and total weight. Furthermore, the results of exponential regressions showed significant positive relationships (p < 0.05) between metal levels and fish size and weight. Average levels of heavy metals in muscle tissues of E. alletteratus were lower than permissible limits for fish consumption prescribed by FAO/WHO, EC, ASTDR, and USFDA.

Bluefin tuna reveal global patterns of mercury pollution and bioavailability in the world's oceans

Bluefin tuna (BFT) is an apex predatory, long-lived, migratory pelagic fish that is widely distributed throughout the world's oceans. These fish have very high concentrations of neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in their tissues, which increase with age. Our study shows that Hg accumulation rates (MARs) in BFT as a global pollution index can reveal global patterns of Hg pollution and bioavailability in the oceans and further reflect both natural and anthropogenic emissions and regional environmental features. Overall, MARs provide a means to compare Hg bioavailability among geographically distinct populations of upper trophic level marine fish across ocean subbasins, to investigate trophic dynamics of Hg in marine food webs, and furthermore, to improve public health risk assessments of Hg exposure from seafood.

Bluefin tuna (BFT), highly prized among consumers, accumulate high levels of mercury (Hg) as neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). However, how Hg bioaccumulation varies among globally distributed BFT populations is not understood. Here, we show mercury accumulation rates (MARs) in BFT are highest in the Mediterranean Sea and decrease as North Pacific Ocean > Indian Ocean > North Atlantic Ocean. Moreover, MARs increase in proportion to the concentrations of MeHg in regional seawater and zooplankton, linking MeHg accumulation in BFT to MeHg bioavailability at the base of each subbasin's food web. Observed global patterns correspond to levels of Hg in each ocean subbasin; the Mediterranean, North Pacific, and Indian Oceans are subject to geogenic enrichment and anthropogenic contamination, while the North Atlantic Ocean is less so. MAR in BFT as a global pollution index reflects natural and human sources and global thermohaline circulation.

Mercury, selenium, and stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes in the striped marlin Kajikia audax and blue marlin Makaira nigricans food web from the Gulf of California

Mercury (Hg) concentrations based on dietary sources have shown to predict differences in fish; however, they are usually applied at an individual scale and are rarely directed at a known trophic transfer. We combined gut content analysis and stable isotope analysis (δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C) to provide a quantitative estimate of Hg and selenium (Se) biomagnification in the striped marlin (Kajikia audax) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) food web from the southwestern Gulf of California. Hg and Se concentrations (mean ± SD; μg g^-1, dw) were different among K. audax (Hg = 3.6 ± 2.1, Se = 5.5 ± 5.4) and M. nigricans (Hg = 19.0 ± 29.6, Se = 8.8 ± 10.5). Such variations of element concentrations could be linked to predation with different Hg and Se contents. Diet data presented as prey weight (%W) indicated a higher proportion of large prey fish for the blue marlin than the striped marlin. δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C indicated pelagic food sources with epipelagic preferences for the blue marlin and mesopelagic for the striped marlin. The relationship between Hg concentrations and δ¹⁵N was positive along the food web of both marlin species, indicating biomagnification of Hg. However, Se biomagnification was not clearly evidenced, and Se:Hg ratios decreased with δ¹⁵N, attributed to increasing Hg concentrations with increased trophic level.

Arsenic in the top predators sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) off the southeastern Gulf of California

Distribution of arsenic (As) in tissues and gonads of the Indo-Pacific sailfish Istiophorus platypterus and the dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus from the SE Gulf of California was evaluated. The bioaccumulation patterns of As were the same in the two species. In I. platypterus, As levels (mg kg^-1, wet weight) were gonads (7.4 ± 1.1) > liver (3.1 ± 0.1) > kidney (2.7 ± 0.1) > muscle (1.6 ± 0.1); in C. hippurus, As (mg kg^-1) levels were gonads (4.3 ± 0.6) > liver (3.2 ± 0.2) > kidney (2.3 ± 0.1) > muscle (1.2 ± 0.1). Differences in As distribution could be attributed to the biological functions of tissues. The hypothesis was confirmed that biomagnification was evidenced by the fact that As levels were lower in prey species than in predators. Intake of muscle from either fish did not represent a risk to humans if recommended portions a week are not exceeded, adults as much as 1802.4 g and 2454.1 g and children 257.5 and 350.6 g, for sailfish and dolphinfish, respectively. In addition, the likelihood of developing cancer due to consumption of edible tissues from either of these top predators was in the acceptable range (6.4 × 10^-5 to 27.3 × 10^-6 for a population that consumes 50 g of muscle in a week) but if a conservative combined slope factor is used the probabilities to develop bladder and lung cancer increments from 1.1 × 10^-3 to 9.1 × 10^-5.

Mercury Accumulation and Elimination in Different Tissues of Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Exposed to a Mercury-Supplemented Diet

In this study, we evaluated the bioaccumulation of mercury in zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to mercury-contaminated food for 21 days and the depuration of mercury for a subsequent post-exposure period of 28 days. Four tissues (muscle, liver, gills, and skin) were analyzed for mercury content. Overall, data indicated that Hg accumulation in the liver is faster than in other tissues. Furthermore, the liver is the tissue with the highest accumulation rate per day (0.021 µg Hg g−1 day−1), followed by muscle, skin, and gills. Conversely, the Hg depuration rates in different tissues showed the following order: gills > skin > muscle > liver. The bioaccumulation factor values of liver and muscle increased linearly during the uptake period. The ratios between mercury concentration in liver and muscle during the experiment also increased during the uptake period and remained higher than 1 during the elimination period, suggesting that Danio rerio needed more than 4 weeks of depuration. Finally, the distribution of Hg in the water column during the accumulation period is Hg particulate > Hg dissolved, and during the depuration period it is the opposite, mercury particulate < mercury dissolved. In conclusion, this study contributes to a better understanding of the differences in Hg dynamics during the accumulation and depuration stages in a model fish, also emphasizing the alterations on Hg available in the water column.

Trace elements in subantarctic false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) tissues, including the skin as an offshore bioindicator

On a global scale, cetaceans are recognized well indicators of marine ecosystem health. Trace elements accumulate in their bodies and potentially constitute a toxicological threat. Here, the concentrations of essential Se; unknown physiological elements Br, Rb, Cs, Ni, and Sr; and pollutants arsenic, Cd, Hg, and Ag were assessed in the skin of false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) stranded at Estrecho de Magallanes, South America, and next, tissue comparisons and relationships between elemental concentrations in the skin and internal tissues (liver, kidney, spleen, lung, skeletal muscle, and testis) were assessed. Results showed elemental concentration variations among tissues. Selenium concentration was found to be higher in the liver 398 (75) μg g-1 dry weight (DW) (standard deviation in parenthesis), followed by skin. Rubidium and Br concentrations were higher in testis 7.92 (0.42) and 99.1 (5.4) μg g-1 DW, respectively, and Cs in muscle 0.36 (0.12) μg g-1 DW, while Ni concentrations range (<0.05-0.91 μg g-1 DW) did not show differences among tissues. Cadmium and arsenic were found to be higher in kidneys, 71.2 (17.6) and 2.54 (1.77) μg g-1 DW, respectively, while Hg was highest in the liver 1068 (234) μg g-1 DW. Concerning inter-tissue relationships, a positive skin-to-kidney and skin-to-muscle correlations were observed for Cs concentrations, and also Hg showed positive skin-to-spleen, skin-to-kidney, and skin-to-testis correlations, which support its use as potential offshore marine biomonitor.

Assessment of In Vitro Bioaccessibility and In Vivo Oral Bioavailability as Complementary Tools to Better Understand the Effect of Cooking on Methylmercury, Arsenic, and Selenium in Tuna

Fish consumption is the main exposure pathway of the neurotoxicant methylmercury (MeHg) in humans. The risk associated with exposure to MeHg may be modified by its interactions with selenium (Se) and arsenic (As). In vitro bioaccessibility studies have demonstrated that cooking the fish muscle decreases MeHg solubility markedly and, as a consequence, its potential absorption by the consumer. However, this phenomenon has yet to be validated by in vivo models. Our study aimed to test whether MeHg bioaccessibility can be used as a surrogate to assess the effect of cooking on MeHg in vivo availability. We fed pigs raw and cooked tuna meals and collected blood samples from catheters in the portal vein and carotid artery at: 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, 300, 360, 420, 480 and 540 min post-meal. In contrast to in vitro models, pig oral bioavailability of MeHg was not affected by cooking, although the MeHg kinetics of absorption was faster for the cooked meal than for the raw meal. We conclude that bioaccessibility should not be readily used as a direct surrogate for in vivo studies and that, in contrast with the in vitro results, the cooking of fish muscle did not decrease the exposure of the consumer to MeHg.

Water temperature modulates mercury accumulation and oxidative stress status of common goby (Pomatoschistus microps)

Mercury (Hg) is a widespread pollutant across estuarine and coastal areas, raising concern on its potential impact on aquatic organisms. Hg may origin from natural and anthropogenic sources, being persistent and potentially toxic to biota, ultimately representing a serious risk to human health. Hg accumulation and toxicity may also induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in marine organisms, responsible for cell and tissue damage. Additionally, the temperature is undoubtedly an important environmental factor to consider regarding accumulation, due to its marked influence on the physiology and ecology of aquatic organisms. This study aimed to investigate the effect of different temperature scenarios (15, 20 and 25 °C) on the Hg accumulation in Pomatoschistus microps (Krøyer, 1838) liver and muscle, as well as on oxidative stress responses and energy metabolism, after short-term exposure to a naturally contaminated sediment with an environmentally relevant [Hg] (1.2 μg g^-1). The results showed that Hg accumulation tends to increase along the temperature gradient with higher values of Hg accumulated in liver than in muscle tissue. The action of antioxidant enzymes and stress proteins seems to be effective in combating oxidative stress in the liver. Despite the action of antioxidant defences in the muscle, oxidative damage was observed at the protein level concomitantly with a decrease in aerobic energy production after exposure to Hg at higher temperatures. These findings are ecologically relevant and highlight the importance of further investigation of combined effects of Hg and other stressors, especially in a scenario of a changing climate where events leading to rapid alterations on water parameters are more frequent.

The Status of Arsenic Pollution in the Greek and Cyprus Environment: An Overview

This study presents an overview about the arsenic (As) contamination and its sources in two European countries. Arsenic is a highly toxic element in its inorganic form and it is carcinogenic to human seven in low concentrations. The occurrence of As in surface water, stream and marine waters, groundwater, bottled water, sediment, soil, mines, and seafood, its environmental origin, and its impacts on human health are discussed. The classes of Geoaccumulation Index for As in Greece ranges from practically uncontaminated to extremely contaminated, and in Cyprus varies between practically uncontaminated and heavily contaminated. In many cases, the As contamination reaches very high concentrations and the impacts may be crucial for the human health and ecosystems. Physicochemical properties, regional climate and geological setting are controlling the occurrence and transport of As. In Greece and Cyprus, the geology, lithology, and ore-deposits are the most important factors for the variation of As contents in water, soil, and sediment. The dominant As species are also determined by the location and the redox conditions. The findings of this paper may be useful for scientists and stakeholders monitoring the studied areas and applying measures for protection of the human and terrestrial ecological receptors (plants, avian, mammals).

Metallic Contamination of the Muscles of Three Fish Species from the Moulouya River (Lower Moulouya, Eastern Morocco)

This study introduces a spatiotemporal evaluation of the metallic contamination with three trace metals (mercury, lead, and cadmium) in the muscles of three fish species (Lepomis macrochirus, Barbus callensis, and Barbus nasus), of which the samples were taken from three stations in the Moulouya River: the confluence of the Moulouya River and the Sebra River (station 1), the neighbourhood of the farms in the region of Aklim downstream from confluence of Lakhmis river (station 2), and the level of ancient bridge of Ras El Ma-Moulouya (station 3), during the period from July 2017 to May 2018. The results have allowed us to highlight rather high contents of lead and mercury in the fish muscles, mainly in station 1, which receives domestic and industrial discharges. The contents of cadmium in all fish species in different stations are very low. Moreover, all concentrations assessed in different fish species do not exceed the maximum limit recommended by European Community (EC) Commission Regulation No. 1881/2006.

Bioaccumulation of heavy metals in different organs of Labeo rohita, Pangasius hypophthalmus, and Katsuwonus pelamis from Visakhapatnam, India

The bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cd, Co, Cu, and Fe) in fish tissues was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (spectra 220) and Mercury (Hg) content was estimated by using a mercury analyzer. Various organs (eye, gill, gut, gonad, liver, skin, and muscle) of three fish species, i.e., Labeo rohita, Pangasius hypophthalmus and Katsuwonus pelamis, from Visakhapatnam were analyzed. Young and aged fish were chosen based on their length: LR-32, LR-49 (Rohu); PH-33, PH-56 (Pangasius); and KP-18, KP-52 (Skipjack). In both the small and big size of L. rohita and P. hypophthalmus, the metal concentration was in the order Fe > Zn > Cu whereas Pb, Hg, and Co were below detectable limit (BDL). Concentrations in K. pelamis was Fe > Zn > Cu > Cd and Pb, Hg, and Co were BDL. In conclusion, the metal concentrations in the examined fish species available in Visakhapatnam fall below the maximum permissible limit (MPL) for human consumption recommended by FAO, WHO, MAFF, and EC.

Growth performance, bioavailability of toxic and essential elements and nutrients, and biofortification of iodine of rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) fed blends with sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima)

Aquaculture production is demanding novel feed ingredients that reflect natural marine nutrient levels, that are also essential to humans. In this regard, biofortification through addition of iodine-rich sugar kelp in feed formulations was assessed in a 12 week rainbow trout trial. Yttrium inclusion in feed allowed determinations of apparent absorption coefficients of essential and potentially toxic elements and apparent digestibility coefficient of nutrients. E.g. apparent absorption coefficients in trouts fortified feed with 1-4% dw kelp were 67-61% As, 32-40% Cd, <5% Fe; 80-83% I; 66-58% Se. Iodine concentrations in feed up to 239 mg/kg (~4% kelp) was proportional to iodine accumulation in trout fillets (R2 = 1.00) with 0.5% transfer ratio. Feed iodine concentrations up to 117 mg/kg (~2% kelp) did not affect growth performance negatively, but increased significantly protein efficiency ratio after eight weeks feeding. However, 4% kelp meal inclusion affected final growth and hepato somatic index, and caused histomorphological changes in the intestine. All fillets had low toxic element concentrations (As, Cd, Hg, Pb). The potential applicability of Saccharina latissima as feed ingredient to tailor iodine concentration in farmed fish is evident. Consuming of a 160 g fillet (2% kelp) contributes ~60% of recommended daily iodine intake for adults.

Low mercury, cadmium and lead concentrations in tuna products from the eastern Pacific

Tuna species: Skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin (Thunnus albacares) and bigeye (Thunnus obesus) are mainly processed into canned products (loins, solid pack, flakes) either in water or oil, and pre-cooked frozen loins. The National Institute of Fisheries of Ecuador (ISO/IEC 17025 certified), which is the official control laboratory, samples and analyses production batches of companies exporting to the European Union in order to ensure the quality control of Ecuadorean tuna product. From 2009 to 2016, 2572 samples have been analysed (by standard methods) for mercury, cadmium, and lead. The averages were 0.24 ± 0.14; 0.03 ± 0.03 and 0.05 ± 0.05 mg kg-1 (wet weight) respectively; which are well below the norms; i.e., total mercury: 1 mg kg-1; Lead: 0.3 mg kg-1 and Cadmium: 0.1 mg kg-1 according to the EU maximum limits. Over time mercury levels in the sample seemed to decrease but for cadmium and lead no clear pattern was observed. Additionally; samples of tuna can products taken at random from local vendor stores gave concentrations of: Mercury: 0.043 ± 0.004 mg kg-1; Cadmium: 0.012 ± 0.002 mg kg-1; Lead: below detection limit (0.01 mg kg-1). There were a few cases (15 out of 2572: 0.58%) of samples with readings near or just over-limit concentrations; of these, 12 corresponded to Cd, two to Pb and one to Hg. Some of them can be considered statistical outliers as well as cross contamination during analytical procedures. Raw tuna samples have given similar or lower concentrations. No significant statistical correlation was found between Hg, Cd and Pb values, this would suggest that the bioaccumulation of each metal is independent of each other. Literature reports that surface dissolved Hg, Cd, and Pb in the eastern Pacific are in the range of 2-18 ng kg-1. Assuming suggested bioaccumulation of 2-6 times, the end concentration in the tuna would be 0.012-0.042; 0.036-0.108 and 0.010-0.027 μg kg-1 of Hg, Cd, and Pb respectively, that would be one order (or more) below the safe consumption limit. Most, if not all the tuna processed in Ecuador is captured in the eastern Pacific and within its EEZ. Ecuadorian canned tuna complies with stringent standards for presence of these metals; therefore, it can be considered safe to be consumed from the point of view of these metal concentrations. However, further studies should assess metal concentrations exclusively from Ecuadorian tuna captured close to coastal and insular areas.

Seasonal and Spatial Variability of Trace Elements in Livers and Muscles of Three Fish Species from the Eastern Mediterranean

Levels of 20 trace elements (Al, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Ba, Hg, Pb, and U) were assessed in livers and muscles of two demersal fish species (Siganus rivulatus and Lithognathus mormyrus) and one pelagic species (Etrumeus teres) from the Lebanese coast located in the Eastern Mediterranean. The samples were collected from three sites along the Lebanese coast during the wet and dry seasons in 2017. The trace elements were more concentrated in livers than in muscles and interspecific differences were also found. The herbivorous species S. rivulatus showed the highest levels for most trace elements, while the carnivorous species L. mormyrus showed the least contamination. Elemental seasonal differences were species dependent and were observed for Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, As, and Hg, with higher values during the wet season. Multivariate analysis showed spatial differences mainly during the wet season, while being closely related to species that reflected different accumulation patterns in each site. Levels of most trace metals in livers were higher than those reported in other Mediterranean regions (up to 2 to 3 folds). Nevertheless, the levels of Cd, Pb, and Hg in fish muscle were below the maximum levels set by the European Commission indicating that the consumption of these fish species is not likely to have adverse effect on human health. However, exposure depends on dietary habits of the population and a continuous exposure to these elements may result in adverse effects.

Total Mercury Levels in Commercial Fish in Market of the Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The mercury concentration was quantified in frozen and canned fish found in the market of the Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Using the method of amalgamation by atomic absorption spectrophotometry with a direct mercury analyzer (DMA-80), significant differences in mercury concentrations among the analyzed fish were found. Frozen pangasius and canned tuna had the highest mercury concentration (59.1 μg/kg and 54.1 μg/kg, respectively). Also, fish from Vietnam had the highest level of total mercury in comparison to fish from other countries. Determined levels of mercury in our samples were below the limit set by the European and Bosnian and Herzegovinian legislation (500 μg/kg wet weight). We have concluded that consumption of commercial fish in the market of the Republic of Srpska does not present any health risk for the average consumer. Nevertheless, a surveillance system of mercury content in fishery products, especially in certain species that concentrate mercury, is crucial for public health protection.

Tracking mercury in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean: the use of tuna and tuna-like species as indicators of bioavailability

Mercury is a trace element that is potentially dangerous due its high toxicity and tendency to bioaccumulate in organisms. Currently, high mercury concentrations are seen in the environment especially due climate changes. Studies regarding mercury bioavailability in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean using tuna and tuna-like species are rare. The aim of the present study was to use tuna and tuna-like species (Thunnus atlanticus, Thunnus albacares, Katsuwonus pelamis, Euthynnus alletteratus, Coryphaena hippurus and Sarda sarda) as indicators of the availability of total mercury (THg) in oceanic food webs of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. THg concentrations varied significantly among species for both muscle and liver (Kruskal-Wallis test; H_5,130 = 52.7; p < 0.05; H_5,130 = 50.1; p < 0.05, respectively). The lowest concentrations were found in C. hippurus (0.008 mg kg^-1 wet weight in the muscle and 0.003 mg kg^-1 wet weight in the liver), and the highest concentrations were reported in the muscle of T. atlanticus (1.3 mg kg^-1 wet weight) and in the liver of S. sarda (2.5 mg kg^-1 wet weight). The continued monitoring of tuna and tuna-like species is necessary to assist in their conservation since tuna can be sentinels of mercury pollution.

Trace elements levels in muscle and liver of a rarely investigated large pelagic fish: The Mediterranean spearfish Tetrapturus belone (Rafinesque, 1810)

We determined levels of mercury, cadmium, lead and selenium in muscle and liver of 29 specimens of a large pelagic fish rarely investigated, the Mediterranean spearfish Tetrapturus belone (Raf., 1810). The following element concentration ranking (mean ± S.D.; espressed in mg/kg dry weight) was recorded in muscle: Hg (3.401 ± 1.908) > Se (1.727 ± 0.232) > Pb (0.532 ± 0.322) > Cd (0.019 ± 0.015), and Se (6.577 ± 1.789) > Cd (5.815 ± 3.038) > Hg (2.698 ± 2.214) > Pb (0.661 ± 1.334) in liver. Levels of Hg, Se and Cd were compared to those reported for other Istiophoridae from oceanic areas and for other large predators of Mediterranean Sea, like swordfish and tuna. Organotropism of trace elements and their relation to size was discussed. Ecophysiological considerations regarding the Se-Hg relationship as well as Se-Cd indicate a possible detoxification mechanism. The implications for human consumption are briefly discussed.

Trace metals in striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) stranded along the Murcia coastline, Mediterranean Sea, during the period 2009-2015

Mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), selenium (Se) and arsenic (As) concentrations in internal tissues of 72 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) from Murcia Region (Mediterranean coastline) have been investigated for the first time. Hg showed the highest concentration, followed by Se, Cd, As and Pb. In general, the levels of metal found in this study were similar to those described in similar studies in the Mediterranean Sea. However, in some adult specimens, Hg liver concentrations were related with toxic effects in cetacean. A significant correlation was observed with age, likewise between Se and Hg and Cd in tissues, which agree with detoxify effect attributed to Se through inert complex formation. Molar ratio Hg:Se in liver was close to 1:1 in some specimens, which would indicate overload of the Hg-Se detoxify function and compromised health. These results could contribute to a better knowledge of the distribution of these persistent pollutants in the Mediterranean Sea.

Analysis and risk assessment of arsenic, cadmium and lead in two fish species (Sardina pilchardus and Xiphias gladius) from Algerian coastal water

In this study, the levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) have been determined in the flesh of two species of fish, sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and swordfish (Xiphias gladius) fished in the Algerian coast. Quantification of As, Cd and Pb was carried out using an ICP-MS method and the results were compared with the thresholds set by national and international regulatory bodies. In a further step, the risk to consumers was assessed using estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI).The average concentration of As and Pb was higher in sardine (1.82; 0.10 mg kg^-1 w.w., respectively), than in swordfish (1.10 mg kg^-1 w.w.; not determined), whereas the concentration recorded for Cd was the same for both species (0.01 mg kg^-1 w.w.). These concentrations are below maximum limits set in regulations. The THQs and HI were widely below 1. The consumption of these fish does not pose risk to the consumers.

Mercury and cadmium distribution in yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) from two fishing grounds in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka

Mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd) are contaminants of great environmental concern due to their natural and anthropogenic origin, their ability of bioaccumulate through the food chain and their harmful effects on human health. In this study, the Hg and Cd accumulation in the muscle of 65 yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) collected from two different catching sites of the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka were evaluated. The samples were mineralized using microwave accelerated digestion, and the metals were detected by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The metal levels were not significantly different between the two sites (p > 0.05), and the average Hg and Cd concentrations were 0.48 ± 0.35 mg/kg and 0.017 ± 0.024 mg/kg, (wet weight basis) respectively. Only 6 (9.2%) and 2 samples (3.1%) exceeded the European Commission limits for Hg (1 mg/kg) and Cd (0.01 mg/kg), respectively. A comparatively strong positive correlation was observed between the THg concentration and the weight of the fish. However, there was no clear relationship between the concentration and size for Cd. These findings provide an understanding of the Hg and Cd distribution in yellowfin tuna in two fishing grounds in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka.

Exposure to metals and arsenic from yellow and red tuna consumption

Tuna is one of the most frequently consumed fish and, as a predator, can biomagnify pollutants. Metal and other elements pollution is an important worldwide concern. Based on these considerations, the aim of this work was to investigate the occurrence of As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Hg and Pb in tuna coming from different FAO areas to evaluate human exposure. The analysis was performed on muscle tissues through a quadrupole inductively coupled mass spectrometry. One hundred thirty-one samples were analysed. One red tuna from the Adriatic Sea and 11 yellow tunas exceeded Pb maximum levels (MLs) with a concentration ranging 0.31-0.86 mg kg^-1; three red tunas from different Mediterranean sub-areas exceeded Hg MLs, with a concentration range 1.19 to 1.80 mg kg^-1. All the Hazard Indexes (HIs) were lower than one, indicating that only a negligible health hazard could derive from the ingestion of tuna, for both average and high consumers. The risk of carcinogenicity from Cr is still under debate at the concentrations detectable in food.

Determination of Hg in Farmed and Wild Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus L.) Muscle

Mercury (Hg) is a well-known toxic element, diffused in the environment, especially in the Mediterranean Sea which is rich in cinnabar deposits. Mercury bioaccumulation in fish is of great concern, especially for top-level aquatic predators (e.g., shark, tuna, swordfish) and above all for species of large human consumption and high nutritional value. This work aimed to determine Hg concentrations in farmed and wild Atlantic Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) caught in the Mediterranean area in order to evaluate the level of Hg bioaccumulation. selenium (Se) content was also determined, since this element is an antagonist of mercury toxicity. Mercury and Se were analysed by atomic absorption spectrometry after microwave digestion of the samples. Hg content in farmed tuna was below the legal limit (1 mg/kg, wet weight, w.w.) for all specimens (0.6 ± 0.2 mg/kg), whereas the wild ones had a content over the limit (1.7 ± 0.6 mg/kg); Se concentration was higher in farmed specimens (1.1 ± 0.9 mg/kg) compared to wild ones (0.6 ± 0.3 mg/kg). A safe seafood could show a Se/Hg ratio >1 and a health benefit value (HBV_Se) > 0: farmed tuna had higher values than the wild specimens (Se/Hg 5.48 vs. 1.32; HBV_Se 11.16 vs. 0.29). These results demonstrate that for Hg, there is a better risk/benefit ratio in farmed T. thynnus. making it safer than wild tuna.

Bioaccumulation Levels and Potential Health Risks of Mercury, Cadmium, and Lead in Albacore (Thunnus alalunga, Bonnaterre, 1788) from The Aegean Sea, Greece

Aegean Sea albacore (T. alalunga), fresh or processed, is marketed locally in Greece or exported, mainly to Japan, Italy, Spain, and France. To provide information for consumers and biomonitoring programs and assess the potential human health risks, concentrations of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) were determined in albacore edible muscle samples from two fishing grounds of the Aegean Sea, Greece via graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS). Of the 82 individuals, 28 contained Cd and three contained Pb above the permissible limits set by the European Union (0.1 mg kg⁻¹ wet wt and 0.3 mg kg⁻¹ wet wt, respectively). None of the samples contained mercury above the limit (1.0 mg kg⁻¹ wet wt). Potential health risks to human via dietary intake of albacore were estimated by the total target hazard quotients (TTHQs), which indicated that the consumers could acquire health problems due to consumption of Aegean Sea albacore. Thus consequently, concentrations of toxic heavy metals in albacore, especially mercury, must be monitored regularly and comprehensively with respect to consumer health.

Probabilistic Integrated Human Mixture Risk Assessment of Multiple Metals Through Seafood Consumption

Inorganic arsenic (iAs), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and methylmercury (MeHg) are toxic metals that cause substantial health concern and are present in various seafood items. This study linked probabilistic risk assessment to the interactive hazard index (HI_INT ) approach to assess the human mixture risk posed by the dietary intake of iAs, Cd, Pb, and MeHg from seafood for different age populations, and joint toxic actions and toxic interactions among metals were also considered in the assessment. We found that, in combination, an iAs-Cd-Pb-MeHg mixture synergistically causes neurological toxicity. Furthermore, an iAs-Cd-Pb mixture antagonistically causes renal and hematological effects and additively causes cardiovascular effect. Our results demonstrated that if toxic interactions are not considered, the health risk may be overestimated or underestimated. The 50th percentile HI_INT estimates in all age populations for neurological, renal, cardiovascular, and hematological effects were lower than 1; however, the 97.5th percentile HI_INT estimates might exceed 1. In particular, toddlers and preschoolers had the highest neurological risk, with 0.16 and 0.19 probabilities, respectively, of neurological HI_INT exceeding 1. Saltwater fish consumption was the principal contributor to the health risk. We suggest that regular monitoring of metal levels in seafood, more precise dietary surveys, further toxicological data, and risk-benefit analysis of seafood consumption are warranted to improve the accuracy of human mixture risk assessment and determine optimal consumption.

Heavy metals concentrations in some commercially key species from Sicilian coasts (Mediterranean Sea): Potential human health risk estimation

Trace elements were measured in the edible tissues of target marine species (Sardina pilchardus, Mullus barbatus, Mullus surmuletus, Merluccius merluccius and Parapenaeus longirostris) collected in some of the main ports of the Sicilian coast (southern Italy) in order to evaluate the potential human health risk associated to their consumption. Cadmium, Pb and Hg were below the tolerable limits reported by the European Union in foodstuffs (Commission Regulation (EC) 1881/2006) except for Hg in P. longirostris from one sampling site. The health risk for consumers was assessed both for adults and children calculating the estimated weekly intake (EWI), the target hazard quotient (THQ) and the lifetime cancer risk (CR) for each element. The EWI did not exceed the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) recommended by the European Food Safety Authority and THQs were < 1 in most cases. Further, the probabilistic distributions of health hazard were evaluated through Monte-Carlo simulation which confirmed a non-carcinogenic risk. With some exceptions related to As exposure, the results obtained definitively confirm the goodness of the fishery commercial resources in one of the most important seafood market of the central Mediterranean Sea and represent a positive data for the assessment of the good environmental status for descriptor 9 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive in this area of the basin.

Patterns of mercury and selenium in tissues and stomach contents of the dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus from the SE Gulf of California, Mexico: Concentrations, biomagnification and dietary intake

Selenium and mercury were evaluated in tissues and stomachs of the dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus from two sites in the Southeastern Gulf of California. Hg levels were consistently low and exhibited the following patterns: muscle (0.14 ± 0.01 μg/g wet weight) followed by kidney (0.12 ± 0.02 μg/g), liver (0.11 ± 0.01 μg/g), and gonads (0.04 ± 0.00 μg/g). The maximum of Se was found in the kidney (5.60 ± 0.40 μg/g) and the minimum in muscle (0.60 ± 0.01 μg/g). All the Se:Hg molar ratios were between 3.7 and 697.1, with the minimum in muscle and the highest in gonads. The results indicate a contrasting behavior biomagnification of Hg and Se; smaller fish (<80 cm FL) did not exhibit biomagnification, in contrast with larger fish (>90 cm FL: 100% for Hg; 65% for Se). These results appear to be related to different feeding habits and availability of prey.
