Abstract
Maternal sleep is significantly disrupted in the postpartum period, but changes in paternal sleep are less established. Here, we systematically review and meta-analyze available data on paternal sleep in the first 24months post birth, including self-report and objectively measured sleep outcomes. Scopus, PsycINFO, and PubMed were searched for original research articles published until end August 2024. We included studies reporting on quantitative summaries of sleep outcomes and data were pooled using random-effects models primarily. We included 47 studies from 17 countries (N=9684) with most data coming from fathers in North America (K=26), and reporting on a diverse range of sleep outcomes. Most data were available for sleep duration (398.29 minutes; 95% CIs 381.43-415.88), night awakenings (1.14; 95% CIs 1.12-1.16), and wake after sleep onset (36.57 minutes; 95% CIs 20.83-64.20). There was high heterogeneity across these three measures (I2 values >95%). While there were a small number of studies using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, our pooled estimate suggested poor sleep in fathers (5.93, 95% CIs 4.75-7.41, I2=91%). Overall, we found some evidence for sleep in few fathers being below the recommended levels, but the extent of any paternal deficit depended on the sleep measure. The US-centric dataset limits our understanding of fathers' sleep experiences postnatally, particularly considering the large relative differences between paternity leave access in the United States vs. other countries.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep is a fundamental factor in an athlete's ability to sustain peak performance and endurance. Mindfulness, defined as a state of intentional, non-judgmental awareness of the present moment, has been linked to positive effects on sleep. The present study aims to investigate which recovery and sleep parameters are influenced by interindividual differences in mindfulness tendencies and intraindividual daily fluctuations in mindfulness. Methods A two-week continuous monitoring study was conducted with 33 elite-level judoka (17 female, 16 male; age: M = 23.79, SD = 3.05) competing at the national and international level. Data collection included objective sleep monitoring via actigraphy and subjective monitoring through morning and evening self-report questionnaires. Sleep was analyzed as a function of both trait and daily mindfulness, as well as behavioral factors such as the number of training sessions, session intensity, and the implementation of recovery activities and naps. Results Multilevel analyses revealed significant positive associations between mindfulness and qualitative subjective sleep parameters, as well as morning and evening recovery-stress states. Among the mindfulness facets, acting with awareness emerged as the strongest predictor. In terms of quantitative sleep parameters, mindfulness influenced both subjective and objective sleep latencies. Discussion The findings suggest that mindfulness may play a key role in sleep regulation among athletes, particularly in enhancing perceived restfulness, improving recovery-stress states in the evening and morning, and facilitating the process of falling asleep. These results highlight mindfulness as a promising target for interventions aimed at improving subjective recovery and reducing sleep onset latencies through daily mindful behaviors. Furthermore, the study underscores the relative independence of qualitative and quantitative sleep parameters, suggesting they are influenced by distinct factors.

Abstract
Sleep deprivation (SD) has been demonstrated to cause male reproductive dysfunction; however, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this work, we conduct Mendelian randomization analysis, which indicates a significant association between sleep disorders and male infertility in humans. To explore the potential mechanism, ten-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats are subjected to continuous SD for five days, showing significantly reduced epididymal sperm concentration and motility compared to the control group. SD treatment also decreases serum testosterone levels and epididymal sperm transit time in male rats. Histological analysis reveals reproductive system damage, while bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing highlight that SD significantly alters transcriptomes and induces differentially expressed genes with significant heterogeneity across three segments of the epididymis. Gene ontology analysis indicates that SD upregulates inflammatory response genes, especially in the more inflammation-sensitive cauda epididymis. Moreover, SD activates immune cells and causes cytokines and chemokines to accumulate in the cauda epididymis. However, recovery sleep mitigates this damage. Our findings reveal that continuous SD disrupts the epididymal immunological microenvironment, lowering sperm quality and potentially contributing to male infertility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep quality is common among stroke survivors, but the prevalence rates vary between studies. This meta-analysis examined the global prevalence of poor sleep quality and its moderating factors among stroke survivors. METHOD Relevant publications were systematically searched in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, PsycINFO, CNKI and WanFang. The pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality and the sleep quality component scores with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model. RESULT Totally, 68 studies comprising 14,845 participants who fulfilled study entry criteria were included for analyses. All included studies used the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality. The global prevalence of poor sleep quality in stroke survivors was 50.26 % (95%CI: 46.69%-53.82 %). Stroke location in left hemisphere was associated with a lower risk of poor sleep quality, while stroke type (i.e., cerebral infarction) and lower-middle-income countries were associated with higher risk of poor sleep quality in stroke survivors. CONCLUSION In this meta-analysis, poor sleep quality was common among stroke survivors and was moderated by stroke location, type, and countries income. To address the adverse impacts of poor sleep quality in stroke survivors, regular screening and appropriate intervention should be provided in a timely fashion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronotype influences risk of depression, with evening-types at higher risk, although the reasons for this are uncertain. Potential mediating factors include mindfulness, sleep quality, rumination, and alcohol consumption, but research is lacking. METHODS We explored the role of these factors in the association between chronotype and depressive symptoms amongst young adults, using cross-sectional data collected from a university student sample (N = 546). RESULTS Evening-types had significantly higher levels of depression symptoms, poorer sleep quality, and lower levels of 'acting with awareness' and 'describing', as well as higher rumination and alcohol consumption. Mediation analyses demonstrated that the link between chronotype and depression was fully mediated by 'acting with awareness', 'describing', sleep quality, and alcohol consumption. LIMITATIONS Only subjective measures were employed, and due to the cross-sectional design, no causal inferences can be made. CONCLUSION The mediation results shed light on the crucial role of specific mindfulness facets, sleep, and alcohol consumption for explaining why evening types are at higher risk of depression; findings have import for potential interventions aiming to reduce depression risk amongst young adults in particular.

Abstract
Insomnia is a prevalent and distressing symptom among cancer patients, adversely impacting quality of life (QOL). Factors such as treatment-related side effects, diagnosis-related stress, and coexisting conditions, including anxiety and depression, often exacerbate insomnia. In Oman, the prevalence and contributing factors of insomnia in cancer patients remain underexplored. Additionally, despite the well-documented impact of insomnia on cancer prognosis, sleep education remains an underutilized component of oncology care. This study is aimed at determining the prevalence of insomnia among Omani cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and at identifying associated factors, emphasizing the need for structured sleep education as an essential part of cancer supportive care. A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2022 to March 2023 at the Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre in Muscat, Oman. Adult Omani cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy during the study period were recruited. Data were collected using Arabic versions of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Edmonton Symptom Assessment System-Revised (ESAS-r). A total of 211 patients participated (response rate 85.1%). Most were female (65.9%), married (83.9%), and had stage IV cancer (55.0%). The mean age was 49.6 ± 11.7 years (range 19-81 years). Symptom burden, ranging from mild to severe, was reported by 30.8% of patients based on ESAS-r scores. Insomnia (PSQI score > 5) was identified in 55.0% of participants, with 34.1% reporting sleep disturbances after their diagnosis but prior to the initiation of chemotherapy. Insomnia was associated with pre-diagnosis sleeping problems (odds ratio (OR) = 3.04, p = 0.009), post-diagnosis but pre-chemotherapy sleep problems (OR = 7.34, p < 0.001), a history of smoking (OR = 4.00, p = 0.043), and symptom burden (OR = 3.78, p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that post-diagnosis/pre-chemotherapy sleep disturbances (OR = 4.09, p = 0.002) and symptom burden (OR = 3.02, p = 0.008) significantly increased the likelihood of insomnia. Insomnia is highly prevalent among Omani cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, driven by high symptom burden and pre-existing sleep disturbances. Routine sleep assessments should be integrated into oncology care to identify at-risk patients and facilitate early intervention, ultimately improving sleep quality and enhancing QOL. Integrating structured sleep education into oncology training is crucial for effective cancer care. Approaches like CBT-I, digital tools, and hospital workshops equip providers and patients to manage sleep disturbances. Interprofessional education (IPE) boosts provider confidence, enhancing patient outcomes. Future efforts should focus on culturally tailored, evidence-based programs to support symptom management, treatment adherence, and survivorship.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the impact of central serous chorioretinopathy on sleep and mood in patients with acute and chronic central serous chorioretinopathy. METHODS This cross-sectional study compared sleep and mood differences between central serous chorioretinopathy and control patients recruited from Ophthalmology clinics at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford between 2012 and 2020. Data including visual acuity, type of central serous chorioretinopathy (acute or chronic; aCSC/cCSC), sex, and chronotype were obtained. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI); the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used to evaluate anxiety (HADS-A) and depression (HADS-D). RESULTS A total of 247 age matched controls and 109 patients with central serous chorioretinopathy participated. There were no significant differences in PSQI or HADs (P > 0.05) between the two groups. Females exhibited significantly higher PSQI scores than males both for control and central serous chorioretinopathy groups (P < 0.05). Within the central serous chorioretinopathy group, 88 (81%) had chronic central serous chorioretinopathy and 21 (19%) had acute central serous chorioretinopathy, and an increase in daytime dysfunction was seen in the acute phenotype compared to chronic (P = 0.018). CONCLUSION In our study, no significant differences in sleep quality or mood scores were identified in central serous chorioretinopathy patients, when compared to controls. Worsened sleep for females was present when compared to males, both in central serous chorioretinopathy and control groups. Within central serous chorioretinopathy groups, worsened daytime function was observed in acute versus chronic - a larger study would help distinguish the effect of chronicity on sleep.

Abstract
AIMS Early detection and management of sleep disturbances can improve postoperative outcomes given the high prevalence of sleep disturbances and unrecognized cognitive impairment in older surgical patients. There is an association between sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment in the general population. However, the relationship in older surgical patients has not been systematically investigated. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence and trajectory of preoperative and postoperative sleep disturbances in older surgical participants with and without suspected cognitive impairment (sCI). METHODS Two hundred and fifty-two participants aged ≥ 65 years undergoing non-cardiac surgery were recruited. The primary outcome was the prevalence and trajectory of sleep disturbances measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in participants with and without sCI preoperatively, 30, 90, and 180 days postoperatively. The main exposure, preoperative sCI, was operationalized as screening positive on one or more of the following cognitive screening tools: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cognitive question (answered "yes"), Ascertain Dementia Eight-item Questionnaire (≥2), Telephone Montreal Cognitive Assessment (≤18), and Modified Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (≤31). Sleep disturbances were defined as a PSQI score > 5. Mixed effects logistic regression models with random intercepts were used for the dichotomous outcome of sleep disturbances. RESULTS One hundred and eight participants (43%) screened positive for preoperative sCI. The prevalence of preoperative sleep disturbances was higher in participants with sCI versus without (63% vs 47%, P = 0.02). Postoperatively in both groups, the prevalence of sleep disturbances was lower at 30, 90, and 180 days, compared to the preoperative assessment and overall trajectories did not differ significantly. Female sex and depression were associated with poorer postoperative sleep, regardless of cognitive status. CONCLUSION Sleep disturbances and suspected cognitive impairment are highly prevalent in surgical cohorts. Targeting conditions such as depression which affect sleep, may improve postoperative outcomes.

Abstract
Evidence describing the association between sleep quality and trauma-focused therapy is mixed. This secondary analysis of a primary care sample examined whether (a) baseline sleep quality moderated posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity over time across groups receiving different doses of cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and (b) sleep quality improved over time with CPT. Participants were 227 adults who screened positive for PTSD and were participating in a clinical trial comparing two models of PTSD treatment delivery in primary care. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) were used to assess sleep disturbance and PTSD symptom severity, respectively. Multiple linear regression was used to assess whether baseline PSQI scores moderated 12-month PCL-5 scores across CPT dosage groups (0 sessions: 51.1%, 1-7 sessions: 31.7%; ≥ 8 sessions [adequate dose]: 17.2%) and whether PSQI scores differed by group at 12-month follow-up. Post hoc analyses examined changes in PCL-5 sleep disturbance items. Baseline sleep disturbance did not moderate the effect of CPT on PTSD severity among participants with an adequate CPT dose, p > .112. Sleep quality improved with adequate dose, B = -2.63, SE = 0.75, p < .001. Differences in change scores across groups for PCL-5 Item 2, F(2, 435) = 11.34, and Item 20, H(2) = 32.04, indicated that participants with an adequate CPT dose had greater reductions in trauma-related sleep symptoms than those who received 0-7 sessions, ps < .001. Residual post-CPT sleep impairment despite adequate PTSD improvement warrants further interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elite sport participation creates a significant burden on adolescent athletes due to demanding training schedules, high training intensities, and the complexity of puberty. As such, an athletes' ability to effectively balance stress and recovery is essential for their athletic performance and requires appropriate management throughout the competitive season. This research aimed to investigate: (i) the quantity, quality, and timing of sleep; (ii) general and sport-specific nutrition knowledge; (iii) recovery practices; and (iv) the relationships between sleep, nutrition, and recovery practices in elite adolescent athletes. METHODS A total of 51 athletes completed a battery of previously validated and reliable questionnaires which investigated their sleep characteristics, nutrition knowledge, and recovery practices. RESULTS Statistically significant moderate correlations were observed between their Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global score, Sleep Difficulty Classification (SDC), and Recovery Stress Questionnaire for Athletes (REST-Q Sport) scales, with small significant correlations observed between the SDC and REST-Q recovery scales. Participants had lower scores in both their sport (36.10 ± 12.13) and total (40.25 ± 11.18) nutrition knowledge compared to their general nutrition knowledge (49.53 ± 16.46). Moderate levels of general (1.50 ± 0.86) and sport-specific (1.57 ± 0.85) stress and high levels of general (3.92 ± 0.74) and sport-specific (3.72 ± 0.96) recovery were demonstrated. Furthermore, 94% reported their sleep quality to be "fairly good" (n = 30) or "very good" (n = 18). CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight the necessity of further investigating the effect of educational strategies on improving sleep, nutrition, and recovery knowledge in athletes to aid recovery and dietary behaviours.

Abstract
Chronic exposure to traffic noise is associated with increased stress and sleep disruptions. Research on the health consequences of environmental noise, specifically traffic noise, has primarily been conducted in high-income countries (HICs), which have guided the development of noise regulations. The relevance of these findings to policy frameworks in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains uncertain. To investigate the relationship between road traffic noise exposure and annoyance on insomnia symptoms, a questionnaire survey was administered to 5408 randomly selected participants residing in Srinagar, India. Sleep quality was assessed using a standardized sleep disturbance score, along with self-reported annoyance levels related to road traffic noise at the participants' residences. Nighttime road traffic noise was modeled using Sound PLAN 8.2 software to generate noise contour maps, enabling the spatial evaluation of noise levels along roadways near residential areas. A total of 79.3% of the 5408 respondents were exposed to noise levels exceeding 45 Lnight dB(A). Statistically significant associations were observed between traffic noise exposure and all insomnia symptoms, with difficulty falling asleep showing the strongest association (OR = 1.53; 95% CI = 1.12-2.09) within the study sample. Compared to males, females exhibited higher insomnia symptoms (OR = 1.68; 95% CI = 1.35-2.08). The results indicated that insomnia was strongly correlated with an increased odds of traffic noise annoyance (OR = 2.39; 95% CI = 1.73-3.76) (p = 0.029). Finally, this study advocates for a robust regulatory framework to incorporate noise pollution mitigation strategies into the public health action plans of developing nations.

Abstract
Background Poor sleep quality is common during the postpartum period due to nighttime feeding and frequent nocturnal awakenings of infants. In addition, the condition may worsen among postpartum women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), affecting their capacity to care for their child. Therefore, this study will provide baseline information by assessing the burden of poor sleep quality and associated factors among HIV-positive and negative postpartum women in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Objective The aim of this study was to assess poor sleep quality and its associated factors among HIV-positive and negative postpartum women in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2023. Methods A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted from 20 March to 20 May 2023, and a systematic random sampling technique was employed to obtain a total of 535 study subjects. An interviewer-administered questionnaire and chart review were used to collect the data. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess the outcome variable with a cutoff point ≥5. Binary logistic regression was employed to check the association of each independent variable with the outcome variable. Variables having a p-value of less than 0.05 in multivariable analysis were considered statistically significant and an adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was computed. Results In this study, the overall prevalence of poor sleep quality among postpartum women was 56.3% [95% CI (51.9, 60.6)]. Poor sleep quality prevalence among HIV-positive and -negative women was 80% and 50.5%, respectively. Being HIV-positive [AOR = 2.38, 95% CI (1.31, 4.32)], being divorced [AOR = 4.5, 95% CI (1.55, 13)], and having a family history of mental illness [AOR = 1.89, 95% CI (1.16, 3.1)], depression [AOR = 1.93 (1.11, 3.3)], and anxiety [AOR = 2.76, 95% CI (1.8, 4.2)] among postpartum women and poor social support [AOR = 6, 95% CI (1.63, 22.4)] among HIV-positive women were significantly associated with poor sleep quality. Conclusion and recommendation This study revealed that the prevalence of poor sleep quality was higher among HIV-positive postpartum women compared to HIV-negative women. It would be better if professionals routinely assess postpartum women for sleep quality and focus on HIV-positive women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Knowledge about transdiagnostic factors associated with global symptom severity among patients diagnosed with various mental disorders remains limited. This study examined the cross-sectional associations between transdiagnostic processes including global emotion regulation and specific emotion regulation strategies (i.e., amount of physical activity and sedentary behaviour, repetitive negative thinking and sleep routines) with global symptom severity, while controlling for sociodemographic data (age, gender, employment status, relationship status, and educational level) and fear of the coronavirus. METHODS Data from 401 outpatients, aged 42.08 years on average (SD = 13.26; 71.3% female), diagnosed with depressive disorders, non-organic primary insomnia, agoraphobia, panic disorder and/or post-traumatic stress disorder were examined. This study is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial. Data were collected from 10 different study sites between March 2021 and May 2022 for cross-sectional analysis. The influence of predictors of global symptom severity was determined using three-step hierarchical multiple regression: (1) control variables, (2) global emotion regulation and (3) specific emotion regulation strategies. Global symptom severity was measured using the Global Severity Index, derived from the Brief Symptom Inventory-18. Predictors were measured using validated scales, and physical activity was additionally assessed via accelerometer-based sensors. RESULTS In the first step, control variables accounted for 4% of variance in global symptom severity. The inclusion of global emotion regulation in the second step explained 26% of the outcome variance, and the incorporation of specific emotion regulation strategies in the third step increased the explained variance to 37%. Significant predictors included global emotion regulation (β = 0.28), repetitive negative thinking (β = 0.26) and sleep routines (β = 0.25). CONCLUSION Global emotion regulation along with repetitive negative thinking and sleep routines as specific emotion regulation strategies are identified as transdiagnostic psychological processes that may serve as treatment targets for evidence-based interventions designed to enhance emotion regulation, particularly in transdiagnostic samples of stress-related disorders. Additional prospective longitudinal studies with transdiagnostic samples are necessary to explore possible causal relationships.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cancer patients frequently report sleep problems. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is a 19-item instrument for assessing sleep problems. The main objective of this study was to analyze the usefulness of the PSQI in oncological research. METHODS A sample of 1,733 cancer patients with mixed diagnoses were included. In addition to the PSQI, the following questionnaires were adopted: the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the Jenkins Sleep Scale (JSS) and the sleep scale of the EORTC QLQ-SURV100. RESULTS The internal consistency of the PSQI was α = 0.79. Of the PSQI subscales, the subjective sleep quality correlated most strongly with the other sleep instruments (r between 0.68 and 0.77). In total, 69.2% of the sample were poor sleepers; the effect size of the difference between the PSQI total scores of the patients and a general population sample was d = 0.83. Female patients experienced more sleep problems than male patients (d = -0.49), and younger patients (<60 years) reported more sleep problems than older patients (≥60 years) (d = 0.21). CONCLUSIONS The PSQI can be recommended for use in clinical practice since its sub-dimensions provide detailed information on the sleep situation of cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep quality is one of the prevalent manifestations experienced by cancer patients. There is a lack of research focusing specifically on sleep quality and affecting factors in Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients. This study aimed to assess the potential interaction between dietary, comorbid conditions, demographic, and socioeconomic determinants of sleep quality in GI cancer patients. METHODS In a cross-sectional study, the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was completed for 875 adult patients suffering from GI cancer in a referral hospital. We conducted structural equation modeling analyses to evaluate the potential interaction between dietary and socioeconomic determinants of sleep quality in GI cancer patients. RESULTS This study demonstrated that the PSQI encompasses two factors (perceived sleep quality and sleep disturbances) in GI cancer patients in Iran. Based on the standardized coefficients for the structural paths, the wealth index (WI) partially mediated the effect of food insecurity (FI) on the sleep quality index. There was a direct predictive effect of the WI on the PSQI (β = 0.10, P = 0.01). In addition, WI indirectly through FI (effect of WI on FI: β = -0.21, P = 0.01 & effect of FI on PSQI: β = 0.07, P = 0.03) had a negative effect on PSQI. Our finding suggested the full mediation effect of age on PSQI through the number of comorbidities (effect of age on number of comorbidities: β = 0.25, P < 0.001 & the effect of number of comorbidities on PSQI: β = 0.13, P < 0.001). Structural path outputs for gender-model indicated the full mediation effect of age on PSQI through the number of comorbidities among males and through the FI among females. CONCLUSION These findings highlight the importance of considering the bi-dimensional construct of the PSQI for assessing sleep quality among GI cancer patients. The current study demonstrated that food insecurity and comorbidity prevalence mediated the relationship between socio-demographic determinants of sleep quality in patients with GI cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND University students, often unemployed and reliant on low-nutrition foods, are susceptible to food insecurity (FI) with potential physical and mental health challenges. This study explores FI and its impact on lifestyle behaviours among university students. METHODS A cross-sectional web-based study was performed by sending an online questionnaire to university students in Lebanon, Cyprus, and Germany during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using validated measures, i.e., the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale, International Physical Activity Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener, adjusted linear regression models were performed to assess the associations between country, FI and physical activity, sleep quality, and diet. RESULTS In a convenience sample of 611 individuals (350 in Germany, 214 in Lebanon, and 47 in Cyprus) enrolled in the study, 547 provided complete response. 190 (34.7%) experienced FI, of whom 52 (9.5%) were severely food-insecure, with variation of FI prevalence between countries (18.9% in Germany, 14.9% in Cyprus, and 60.3% in Lebanon). Lifestyle behaviours also differed between participants from the three countries, with students in Germany exhibiting the highest physical activity level and the lowest adherence to the Mediterranean diet compared with Lebanon and Cyprus. On the other hand, participants from Lebanon and Cyprus had similar physical activity and diet behaviours. Concerning sleep, students in Cyprus showed the poorest quality. FI significantly correlated with reduced physical activity (beta - 0.171, 95% Confidence Interval (-0.313, -0.029)), but not with sleep or diet. The country of residence independently predicted lifestyle behaviours (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that FI impacts university students in countries of varying income levels, and the country of residence independently influences lifestyle behaviours. Larger-size studies are essential to confirm these findings and further explore FI's impact on university students outside the context of the pandemic.

Abstract
Background: There is a great need for feasible interventions in the initial period after a trauma that minimize the risk of developing a clinically relevant PTSD. The majority of people suffer from severe sleep disorders after a traumatic event. Because sleep is essential for processing emotional memories, we aim to improve sleep quality in acutely traumatized patients to benefit adaptive trauma processing and thereby prevent PTSD development.Objective: In a multicentre randomized controlled trial (RCT), we will investigate whether digital cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (dCBT-I) has the potential to not only increase sleep quality in acutely traumatized individuals but also reduce trauma-related symptoms (specific PTSD symptoms as well as related symptoms such as depression, anxiety and functional outcomes) and the risk for PTSD development in acutely traumatized individuals. Moreover, we will test if sleep disturbances pre-therapy predict the development of later PTSD symptoms.Method: We aim to recruit 104 patients who will be randomly assigned to an app-based sleep intervention utilizing CBT-I or a sleep diary as an add-on to treatment-as-usual (TAU) in outpatient acute trauma centres. Sleep quality, PTSD symptoms and everyday functioning will be measured before, after the intervention and at a 6-month follow-up.Conclusion: To our knowledge, this multicentre RCT is the first study to use dCBT-I as an early intervention for trauma. It may improve the understanding of the role of sleep in the development of PTSD and has the potential to contribute to the development of an easy-to-use early intervention for acutely traumatized individuals.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the relationship between Chinese adapted MIND diet and cognitive functioning and performance in different cognitive domains across a cross-section of Chinese middle-aged and older adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study used baseline data from the Lifestyle and Healthy Ageing in Chinese Square Dancers study. Chinese adapted MIND diet scores were calculated from a detailed retrospective semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire assessment. By averaging the z-scores of Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT), Verbal Fluency Test (VFT), Digital Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), and Trail Making Test-B (TMT-B), a comprehensive z-score is obtained to represent global cognition. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) was diagnosed based on Petersen's criteria. Multiple linear regression models were used to analyze the relationship between Chinese adapted MIND diet scores and z-scores of cognitive functions, and multiple logistic regression models were used to assess the association between diet scores and MCI. RESULTS In this study, a total of 4335 participants were included, whose mean age was 63.61 years (SD = 5.15), 85.07% were female, and 13.33% (578/4335) of them had MCI. In the fully adjusted model, the group with the highest diet scores had the best cognitive function compared to the group with the lowest diet scores (P < 0.05), including global cognitive function (β = 0.10, 95% CI: 0.05, 0.15), AVLT (β = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.20), VFT (β = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.20), DSST (β = 0.07, 95% CI: 0.00, 0.14), and TMT-B (β =-0.10, 95% CI: -0.18, -0.01). In addition, compared to the lowest group, the highest diet scores group were associated with lower odd ratio of MCI (OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.51, 0.93). CONCLUSIONS Our findings support that higher adherence to Chinese adapted MIND diet is associated with better cognitive function and lower prevalence odds ratio for MCI in a Chinese middle-aged and older population.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sleep problems are frequently observed in cancer patients. Multiple questionnaires for assessing sleep quality have been developed. The aim of this study was to present transfer rules that allow the conversion of the patients' scores from one questionnaire to another. In addition, we anchored this common metric to the general population. METHODS A sample of 1,733 cancer patients completed the following questionnaires: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Insomnia Sleep Index, Jenkins Sleep Scale, EORTC QLQ-C30, and the sleep scale of the EORTC QLQ-SURV100. The methods for establishing a common metric were based on Item Response Theory. RESULTS The main result of the study is a figure that allows the conversion from one of the above-mentioned sleep scales into another. Furthermore, the scores of the questionnaires can be transferred to theta scores that indicate the position within the group of cancer patients and also to T scores that indicate the position in relation to the general population. The correlations between the sleep scales ranged between 0.70 and 0.85. CONCLUSIONS The conversion rules presented in the study enable researchers and clinicians to directly compare single scores or mean scores across studies using different sleep scales, to assess the degree of sleep problems with regard to the general population, and to relate cutoff scores from one questionnaire to another.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep quality is a serious concern among diabetes mellitus patients, adversely affecting glycemic management and the prognosis of diabetic patients. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to estimate the overall pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality and its associated factors among diabetic patients in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS Several search databases were employed to retrieve the eligible studies. A standardized data extraction format was used to extract the data, and the analysis was conducted using STATA version 14. To determine heterogeneity, the I2 test was conducted, and both the funnel plot and Egger's regression test were used to assess the publication bias. A random effects model meta-analysis was performed to estimate the overall prevalence and associated factors of poor sleep quality. RESULTS In the current meta-analysis, a total of 11 studies with 3,766 study participants were included. The overall pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality among diabetic patients was 53.22% (95% CI: 36.26, 70.19). Poor sleep quality was significantly associated with longer duration of diabetes (OR = 2.94, 95% CI: 1.85, 4.67), poor glycemic control (OR = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.51, 3.32), depression (OR = 4.09, 95% CI: 2.07, 8.05) and comorbidity (OR = 1.94, 95% CI: 1.31, 2.88). CONCLUSION In this study, more than half of diabetic patients in Sub-Saharan Africa had poor sleep quality. Therefore, healthcare providers should give more attention to sleep disorders when screening diabetic patients to improve their poor sleep quality.

Abstract
Aims This study investigated whether the relationship between neuroticism and sleep quality in nursing interns is mediated by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) constitution. In addition, the study examined whether sedentary behaviour affects this mediating model. Background The importance of sleep quality for nursing interns cannot be overstated. Previous studies have demonstrated that neuroticism negatively affects sleep quality. However, little is known about the path of the relationship between neuroticism and sleep quality among nursing interns. Design A cross-sectional study was conducted in Central and South China. Methods A total of 630 nursing interns participated in this study. Neuroticism, TCM constitution, sleep quality, and sedentary behaviour were measured using reliable and valid questionnaires. Data were analysed using the PROCESS macro in SPSS. Results Neuroticism significantly predicted the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI; β = 0.144, P < 0.001). Neuroticism exerted a significant indirect effect on the PSQI through gentleness and damp heat constitution (β = 0.265, 95 % CI [0.214, 0.315]). In addition, sedentary time moderated this mediation model. Sedentary time marginally moderated the direct pathway from neuroticism to the PSQI (B = -0.025, 95 % CI [-0.046, -0.004]) and the pathway from neuroticism to the damp heat constitution (B = 0.175, 95 % CI [0.021, 0.329]) in the nursing interns. Conclusion TCM constitution mediates the relationship between neuroticism and sleep quality. Given the moderating effect of sedentary behaviour, targeting sedentary behaviour can be an effective approach to improve the sleep quality of nursing interns.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep is one of the most essential processes for sustaining cognitive, emotional, and physical health across all age groups. Insomnia or inadequate sleep significantly impacts health and poses economic burdens due to increased healthcare costs and reduced productivity. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS This study aimed to investigate sleep quality in the Romanian active population using an online survey incorporating the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Conducted over four months in 2023, the survey gathered 2243 complete responses from urban and rural residents over the age of 18. RESULTS The results highlight gender and urban-rural disparities in sleep quality, revealing that females and urban residents experienced poorer sleep compared to their counterparts. Additionally, sleep quality was found to significantly worsen with age, with elders (56+ years) reporting the highest PSQI scores, indicating greater sleep difficulties compared to middle-aged adults and youngsters. A high prevalence of sleep disturbances, daytime dysfunctions, and sleep medication use was reported. Common pre-sleep activities included using electronic devices and watching TV, while fewer participants engaged in reading books or consuming alcohol and caffeine. Additionally, participants' bedding preferences were documented. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights the influence of various factors on sleep quality and emphasizes the need for targeted public health interventions to improve sleep health in Romania.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The high prevalence of poor sleep quality (PSQ) in the general population leads to negative health outcomes. Since estimates of PSQ prevalence in the Chinese general population vary widely, this meta-analysis aimed to refine these estimates and to identify moderating factors. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was undertaken in both international (PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and EMBASE) and Chinese (Wanfang, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases) databases from inception to 23 November 2023. Studies were required to have used standard scales such as the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The pooled prevalence of PSQ and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed to identify sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS In 32 studies with a combined 376,824 participants, the pooled prevalence of PSQ was 19.0% (95% CI 15.8-22.8%; range 6.6-43.6%). Across 22 studies that reported PSQI data, the pooled mean score was 4.32 (95%CI 3.82-4.81; SD = 0.502). The pooled mean sleep duration across 8 studies was 7.62 (95% CI 7.23-8.00; SD = 0.194) hours. Subgroup analyses showed that lower education (Q = 4.12, P = 0.042), living in less developed regions (Q = 60.28, P < 0.001), and lower PSQI cutoff values (Q = 9.80, P = 0.007) were significantly associated with PSQ. Meta-regression analyses showed that study quality was inversely associated with estimated PSQ prevalence (β = - 0.442, P = 0.004). LIMITATIONS Although measures such as subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed, substantial heterogeneity remained. Information related to sleep quality, such as comorbid physical diseases or psychiatric disorders, substance use, occupational types, and employment status, were not reported in most studies. CONCLUSION One in five people in the general population of China may have PSQ and people with lower education or living in western regions may be more susceptible.

Abstract
Precapillary pulmonary hypertension (PcPH) is associated with the development of sleep-related disorders and impairment of sleep quality. With growing recognition of the clinical relevance of sleep-related conditions in PcPH, this narrative review seeks to discuss the spectrum of disorders encountered in clinical practice, pathophysiological mechanisms linking PcPH with sleep-related disorders, and potential therapeutic considerations. Current evidence demonstrates a higher prevalence of impaired sleep quality, sleep-disordered breathing, sleep-related hypoxia, and restless leg syndrome in patients with PcPH. These sleep-related disorders could further lead to impairment of quality of life in a patient population with already a high symptom burden. Recent data suggest that sleep-related hypoxia is strongly linked to worse right ventricular function and higher risk of transplantation or death. However, limited studies have investigated the role of oxygen therapy or positive airway pressure therapy improving symptoms or outcomes. Abnormal iron homeostasis is highly prevalent in PcPH and may contribute to the development of restless legs syndrome/periodic limb movement of sleep. To improve sleep management in PcPH, we highlight future research agenda and advocate close collaboration between pulmonary hypertension specialists and sleep physicians.

Abstract
Increasing air pollution could undermine human health, but the causal link between air pollution and eye and ear health has not been well-studied. Based on four-week-level records of eye and ear health over 1991-2015 provided by the China Health and Nutrition Survey, we estimate the causal effect of air pollution on eye and ear health. Using two-stage least squares estimation, we find that eye or ear disease possibility rises 1.48% for a 10 μg/m3 increase in four-week average PM2.5 concentration. The impacts can last about 28 weeks and will be insignificant afterward. Females, individuals aged 60 years and over, with high exposure environments, relatively poor economic foundations, and low knowledge levels are more vulnerable to such negative influences. Behavioral channels like more smoking activities and less sleeping activities could partly explain this detrimental effect. Our findings enlighten how to minimize the impact of air pollution and protect public health.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objectives To investigate retired elite female rugby players' health outcomes (and their relationships) in five key areas (musculoskeletal, cognitive, mental, reproductive/endocrinological and cardiovascular) and how those compare with the general population. Methods Female rugby players aged ≥18 years old and retired from elite competition ≥2 years were recruited via email or social media to complete a 179-item online questionnaire and neurocognitive assessment. Data from general population controls (matched for age and sex) were obtained where available. Results 159 participants responded (average age 43 (±5) years). 156 (98%) reported a hip/groin, knee, foot/ankle or lower back injury during their career, of which 104 (67%) reported ongoing pain. Participants reported worse hip and knee outcomes compared with the general population (p<0.0001). 146 (92%) reported sustaining one or more concussions. History of concussion was associated with lower-than-average scores on neurocognitive assessment. Compared with general population data, retired female rugby players reported less anxiety (OR=0.079 (95% CI 0.03 to 0.19)), depression (OR=0.67 (95% CI 0.57 to 0.78)) and distress (OR=0.17 (95% CI 0.15 to 0.19)). Amenorrhoea rates were higher compared with matched controls, and the age at menopause was younger. The prevalence of hypertension was higher. The rugby players perceived that their health decreased in retirement and cited a lack of physical activity as a main contributor. Conclusion Our findings point to the potential value of screening and monitoring, and identifying preventative measures during sporting careers to promote health and long-term quality of life for athletes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To explore modifiable psychosocial factors, sleep-related variables, indices of central pain processing and patients' characteristics as potential prognostic factors for pain, shoulder function, and quality of life (QoL) 1 year after rotator cuff repair. DESIGN: This observational longitudinal study included 142 patients who were undergoing rotator cuff repair. All measures took place pre-rotator cuff repair (T0), and 12 weeks (T1) and 12 months (T2) after rotator cuff repair. METHODS: Mixed-effects linear regression modeled relationships between the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index (WORC, model A), the Subjective Shoulder Value (SSV, model B), and EuroQol's EQ-5D-5L for QoL (model C), and potential prognostic factors over time. Factors included psychosocial variables, sleep-related indices, and proxies of central pain processing. Patients' age, sex, and body mass index complemented the analyses. RESULTS: At follow-up (T2), data from 124 participants were available for analysis. Five prognostic factors were identified for the 1-year outcome. Better expectations for symptom reduction (P<.0001, -1.4 mm) and an increase in Douleur Neuropathique 4 score (P = .0481, -0.9 mm) affected the evolution of WORC over time (model A). An increase in injury perception subscale consequence (P = .0035, 0.04%) influenced the SSV trajectory (model B). In addition, when sleep quality (P = .0011, -0.13%) and sleep efficiency (P = .0002, 0.005%) improved, the EQ-5D-5L slope was affected (model C). CONCLUSION: Addressing cognitions, pain mechanisms and sleep behavior prior to rotator cuff repair can identify people who are at risk of a poor outcome after surgery. Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-operative complications present a challenge to the healthcare system due to the high unpredictability of their incidence. Socioeconomic conditions have been established as social determinants of health. However, their contribution relating to postoperative complications is still unclear as it can be heterogeneous based on community, type of surgical services, and sex and gender. Uncovering these relations can enable improved public health policy to reduce such complications. METHODS In this study, we conducted a large population cross-sectional analysis of social vulnerability and the odds of various post-surgical complications. We collected electronic health records data from over 50,000 surgeries that happened between 2012 and 2018 at a quaternary health center in St. Louis, Missouri, United States and the corresponding zip code of the patients. We built statistical logistic regression models of postsurgical complications with the social vulnerability index of the tract consisting of the zip codes of the patient as the independent variable along with sex and race interaction. RESULTS Our sample from the St. Louis area exhibited high variance in social vulnerability with notable rapid increase in vulnerability from the south west to the north of the Mississippi river indicating high levels of inequality. Our sample had more females than males, and females had slightly higher social vulnerability index. Postoperative complication incidence ranged from 0.75% to 41% with lower incidence rate among females. We found that social vulnerability was associated with abnormal heart rhythm with socioeconomic status and housing status being the main association factors. We also found associations of the interaction of social vulnerability and female sex with an increase in odds of heart attack and surgical wound infection. Those associations disappeared when controlling for general health and comorbidities. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that social vulnerability measures such as socioeconomic status and housing conditions could affect postsurgical outcomes through preoperative health. This suggests that the domains of preventive medicine and public health should place social vulnerability as a priority to achieve better health outcomes of surgical interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We assessed the psychometric properties, established normative data for the German Multifactorial Memory Questionnaire (MMQ), and analyzed its association with neuropsychiatric factors across the life span to provide a validated metamemory assessment for a German-speaking population. METHODS The three MMQ scales (memory satisfaction, self-rated ability, and strategy application) were translated into German, considering cultural, linguistic, and conceptual aspects. To validate the MMQ and assess associations with neuropsychiatric factors, the Complainer Profile Identification, Geriatric Depression Scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Short-Form-Health Survey were applied in an online study in 336 healthy participants with follow-up after 8 months. RESULTS Psychometric evaluation of the German MMQ showed normal distribution of all scales and good to excellent validity, internal consistency, and retest reliability. We provide percentiles and normative data for z-score conversion. Importantly, even subclinically elevated scores in depressiveness and anxiety were associated with decreased memory satisfaction and self-rated ability. Furthermore, although the influence of age on the German MMQ scales was minimal, effects of neuropsychiatric factors such as sleep quality, anxiety, and depressiveness on MMQ Satisfaction and Ability varied across the life span. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides a validated German translation of the MMQ with normative data and reliability measures, including reliable change scores. We show the impact of neuropsychiatric factors on the MMQ scales across the life span and emphasize the relevance of a multifactorial approach to metamemory as a measure of individualized everyday functionality and the importance of including neuropsychiatric factors into both research and clinical assessments of metamemory.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several studies have examined the relationship between sleep quality and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, there are a lack of generalizable data on this association in Singapore. Our study aimed to (1) investigate the association between sleep quality and HRQOL and (2) examine whether age moderated these associations. METHODS Data were obtained from nationwide Singapore Mental Health Study 2016 (n = 6126, response rate = 69.5%). Sleep quality was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) where higher scores indicate poorer sleep quality. HRQOL [Physical component summary (PCS) and Mental component summary (MCS)] were measured using 12-item Short-Form Survey. Associations were investigated using multivariable linear regression models, adjusted for sociodemographic, physical, and mental comorbidities. Interactions between age and sleep quality were examined by including interaction terms individually. RESULTS Poorer PSQI score was significantly associated with lower PCS (β = - 0.44) and lower MCS (β = - 0.73). Among PSQI components, lower PCS was significantly associated with subjective sleep quality (β = - 1.06), sleep duration (β = - 0.30), sleep disturbance (β = - 0.33), and daytime dysfunction (β = - 0.75). Lower MCS was significantly associated with subjective sleep quality (β = - 1.36), sleep latency (β = - 0.24), sleep disturbance (β = - 0.16), using of sleeping medication (β = - 1.12), and daytime dysfunction (β = - 2.08). Age moderated the association between PSQI score with PCS and MCS. Stronger association between PSQI score and MCS was observed in younger individuals (β = - 0.90) than older adults (β = - 0.45). CONCLUSION Our study found that poor sleep quality was associated with HRQOL of certain age groups more than others. Future studies may identify potential mediators to help people with chronic sleep problems.

Abstract
Purpose of Review Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder experienced by older adults. There is a wide range of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options in existing literature. The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize randomized controlled trials of insomnia treatment modalities for adults aged 55 and older over the last 5 years. We searched four databases, and after screening, there were 34 full-text manuscripts that met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Recent Findings We found non-pharmacological interventions, including exercise and behavioral/psychoeducational therapies, remain effective and favorable. Complementary and alternative therapies ranged across studies and warrant further testing in larger, more diverse samples. Dual orexin receptor antagonist medications were tested in a few studies with positive benefits for sleep and minimal side effects. Finally, measures of insomnia/sleep disturbance outcomes varied among the studies, with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index being used most frequently. Summary Non-pharmacological interventions for insomnia in older adults are effective, and some newer medications may be safer, with less side effects, at managing insomnia in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Menstrual cycle symptoms are very common in female athletes. However, more evidence about the association between menstrual cycle characteristics and symptoms with sleep and mental health in athletes needs to be gathered. This study aimed to examine this association in German exercising women and athletes. DESIGN 322 women (mean age: 23.13 ± 4.36) participated in a cross-sectional study. The survey included the Menstrual Symptom index (MSi), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Athletes Sleep Behavior Questionnaire (ASBQ). Additionally, demographic, sport-specific data and further menstrual cycle characteristics were examined. Multiple regression models were used for the statistical analyses. RESULTS The MSi score demonstrated a highly significant (p < 0.001) positive association with Depression, Anxiety, Stress, PSQI, and ASBQ. The most prevalent menstrual cycle symptoms were cravings/increased appetite, mood changes/anxiety, and tiredness/fatigue. A difference between individual and team sport athletes could not be found. Moreover, there was no association between the constructs and menses length, irregularity, or heaviness of bleeding. CONCLUSIONS Menstrual cycle symptoms occur very frequently in female athletes. In this study, they were related to mental health, sleep quality, and sleep behavior, regardless of the cycle phase. This evidence demonstrates the relevance of considering the menstrual cycle and menstrual symptoms in future studies with female athletes and in sport practice.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep hygiene education (SHE) consists of environmental and behavioral practices primarily intended to reduce sleep problems. Currently considered ineffective as a stand-alone treatment, the manner in which the education is typically delivered may be ineffective for the acquisition of new knowledge. The purpose of this study was to determine if a more engaging teaching medium may improve the efficacy of sleep hygiene education. This study examined the use of game-based learning to teach SHE to individuals with sleep problems. Methods 35 participants played the SHE games for 30 days. Differences in pre- and post-state anxiety and sleep quality measures were examined. Results Participants had significant improvements in sleep quality and state anxiety after using the app for 30 days, although scores for the majority of patients remained elevated. Discussion This pilot investigation provides initial evidence for the efficacy of a game-based approach to SHE.

Abstract
Changes in sleep are reported in adolescents with depression with a frequency of up to 71%. Aspects of chronobiology and sleep based on the current scientific literature are illustrated and summarized in this narrative review. The circadian clock synchronizes organisms to the light-dark structure of the environment. The individual synchronization is called "chronotype." Chronotype changes according to age, among other factors, and adolescents experience the latest chronotypes overall. The potential discrepancy between internal and external time is called "social jetlag." Social jetlag is especially pronounced during adolescence. It is associated with numerous health risks, such as depression. Changes in sleep behavior in affective disorders and its comorbidity to depression have also been well described in the literature. In this article, underlying concepts from chronobiology and sleep medicine are initially summarized. Then, health risks of disrupted sleep-wake behavior are described, and connections to depression specifically during adolescence are drawn. The article concludes with clinical recommendations for sleep disorders and depression during adolescence as well as suggestions for further research.

Abstract
A lack of sleep can increase appetite, particularly for high-calorie food. The current study tested the effects of an open-label placebo for improving sleep quality and reducing food cue reactivity. In open-label placebo interventions, placebo recipients are informed that they are receiving a placebo without a pharmacologically active substance. Participants (n = 150) were randomly allocated to one of three groups that received either an open-label placebo to improve sleep quality, a deceptive placebo ("melatonin"), or no placebo. The placebo was administered daily before bedtime for 1 week. Sleep quality and reactivity to high-calorie food cues (appetite, visual attention to food images) were assessed. The deceptive placebo (but not the open-label placebo) reduced reported sleep-onset latency. The open-label placebo decreased perceived sleep efficiency. The placebo interventions did not change food cue reactivity. This study demonstrated that open-label placebos do not present an alternative to deceptive placebos for improving sleep quality. The undesirable open-label placebo effects found warrant further exploration.

Abstract
Adequate sleep is crucial for elite athletes' recovery, performance readiness, and immune response. Establishing reference ranges for elite athletes enables appropriate contextualization for designing and targeting sleep interventions. PURPOSE To establish sleep-quality reference ranges for Olympic and Paralympic cohorts using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and explore differences based on sex and sport types. METHODS Team USA athletes (men = 805, women = 798) completed the PSQI as part of a health-history questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to create reference ranges and linear models, and χ2 test of independence determined differences in PSQI global and component scores between sex, games, season, and participation. RESULTS Six hundred thirty-two (39.43%) athletes reported poor sleep (PSQIGlobal ≥ 5). Men displayed later bedtimes (P = .006), better global PSQI scores, shorter sleep latency, less sleep disturbance, and less use of sleep medication than women (all P < .001). Winter Games participants had later bedtime (P = .036) and sleep offset time (P = .028) compared with Summer Games athletes. Team-sport athletes woke earlier than individual-sport athletes (P < .001). Individual-sport athletes were more likely to have low (P = .005) and mild (P = .045) risk for reduced sleep duration than team-sport athletes. CONCLUSION These data provide PSQI-specific reference ranges to identify groups at greatest risk for poor sleep, who may benefit most from targeted sleep interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients receiving home parenteral nutrition (HPN) frequently report disrupted sleep. However, there are often inconsistencies between objectively measured and questionnaire-derived sleep measures. We compared sleep measures estimated from wrist actigraphy and self-report in adults receiving HPN. METHODS In this secondary analysis, we pooled data from two sleep-related studies enrolling adults receiving habitual HPN. We compared measures from 7-day averages of wrist actigraphy against comparable responses to a sleep questionnaire. Sleep measures included bedtime, wake time, time in bed, total sleep time, and sleep onset latency (SOL). Spearman correlation coefficients, Bland-Altman plots, and linear regression models for each set of sleep measures provided estimates of agreement. RESULTS Participants (N = 35) had a mean age of 52 years, body mass index of 21.6 kg/m2 , and 77% identified as female. Correlation coefficients ranged from 0.35 to 0.90, were highest for wake time (r = 0.90) and bedtime (r = 0.74), and lowest for total sleep time (r = 0.35). Actigraphy overestimated self-reported bedtime, wake time, and total sleep time and underestimated self-reported time in bed and SOL. Regression coefficients indicated the highest calibration for bedtime and wake time and lower calibration for time in bed, total sleep time, and SOL. CONCLUSION We observed strong-to-moderate agreement between sleep measures derived from wrist actigraphy and self-report in adults receiving HPN. Weaker correlations for total sleep time and SOL may indicate low wrist actigraphy sensitivity. Low-quality sleep resulting from sleep disruptions may have also contributed to an underreporting of perceived sleep quantity and lower concordance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) undergoing radiation therapy (RT) often experience sleep disturbances that may contribute to oral mucositis (OM) and quality of life (QOL). METHODS Patients with HNC treated with RT at a single institution were examined. Sleep questionnaires were given on the first day of RT to assess for insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Patient-reported QOL and oral mucositis were assessed during RT. Associations between insomnia and OSA with QOL were assessed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Linear mixed models assessed associations with OM. RESULTS Among 87 patients, 34 patients (39%) had subthreshold or greater insomnia and 47 patients (54%) screened positive for OSA. Upon RT completion, patients with subthreshold or greater insomnia had worse physical function (p = 0.005), fatigue (p = 0.01), insomnia (p < 0.001), and sticky saliva (p = 0.002). Patients screening positive for OSA had worse physical function (p = 0.01), sticky saliva (p = 0.02), fatigue (p = 0.007), insomnia (p = 0.009), and pain (p = 0.005). Upon linear mixed model evaluation, subthreshold or greater insomnia (p = 0.01) and positive OSA screen (p = 0.002) were associated with worse OM. CONCLUSION Insomnia and OSA are highly prevalent in patients with HNC undergoing RT. These sleep disturbances are associated with worse QOL and OM during treatment.

Abstract
Study Objectives This study (1) assessed sleep quality and health in Gulf War veterans (GWV) meeting the Gulf War Illness (GWI) criteria and (2) compared health associations for both those meeting a "clinically disturbed sleep" threshold, and those below, as determined by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) cutoff for military populations (≥10) on measures of physical, mental, and cognitive health. Methods Participant data consisted of questionnaires and assessments completed prior to group assignment in a clinical trial. The sample consisted of 147 GWV, where 81.0% were males, and the median age was 53.4 years. Results The mean (SD) PSQI global score was 12.34 (4.00) with 61% of the sample qualifying as clinically disturbed sleepers according to the cutoff (global PSQI ≥ 10). GWI veterans with PSQI scores ≥10 did not differ from others in age (p = 0.20), sex (p = 0.19), or years of education (p = 0.87), but showed worse GW-related symptomology on the Gulf War Kansas questionnaire (p < 0.01), and poorer mental health on the Veterans Rand-36 (p < 0.01). Conclusions Disturbed sleep was associated with measures of pain, fatigue, and cognitive health. Our results suggest that a previously determined clinical threshold for clinically disturbed sleep is useful when examining the health status of the study population. Given that GWI is associated with elevated PSQI scores and a high frequency of disturbed sleep, cutoffs determining sleep health should be sensitive to population exposures and health history to improve interpretability.

Abstract
Background Poor sleep quality significantly impacts academic performance in university students. However, inconsistent and inconclusive results were found in a study on sleep among university students in several African nations. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence and associated factors of poor sleep quality among university students in Africa. Methods The databases PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, African Journal Online, and Google Scholar were searched to identify articles. A total of 35 primary articles from 11 African countries were assessed and included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Data were extracted by using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and exported to STATA version 14 for analysis. The I2 test was used to assess the statistical heterogeneity. A random effect meta-analysis model was employed with 95% confidence intervals. Funnel plots analysis and Egger regression tests were used to check the presence of publication bias. A subgroup analysis and a sensitivity analysis were done. Results A total of 16,275 study participants from 35 studies were included in this meta-analysis and systematic review. The overall pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality among university students in Africa was 63.31% (95% CI: 56.91-65.71) I2 = 97.2. The subgroup analysis shows that the combined prevalence of poor sleep quality in East, North, West, and South Africa were 61.31 (95% CI: 56.91-65.71), 62.23 (95% CI: 54.07-70.39), 54.43 (95% CI: 47.39-61.48), and 69.59 (95% CI: 50.39-88.80) respectively. Being stressed (AOR= 2.39; 95% CI: 1.63 to 3.51), second academic year (AOR= 3.10; 95% CI: 2.30 to 4.19), use of the electronic device at bedtime (AOR= 3.97 95% CI: 2.38 to 6.61)) and having a comorbid chronic illness (AOR = 2.71; 95% CI: 1.08, 6.82) were factors significantly associated with poor sleep quality. Conclusion This study shows that there is a high prevalence of poor sleep quality among university students in Africa. Being stressed, in the second year, using electronic devices at bedtime, and having chronic illness were factors associated with poor sleep quality. Therefore, addressing contributing factors and implementing routine screenings are essential to reduce the burden of poor sleep quality. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of sleep disturbances in adults seeking physical therapy services. METHODS Participants were issued an electronic survey to provide demographic information and the following questionnaires: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), STOP-BANG (obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) risk), and restless leg syndrome (RLS) risk. Percentages were calculated to describe prevalence of sleep disturbances, and Spearman's correlations were used to identify associations between pain and sleep questionnaires. RESULTS Eighty-eight participants (47.9 ± 15.8 years, 68 females) completed the survey. Seventy-eight percent (n = 69) scored >5 on the PSQI; 32% (n = 28) scored ≥10 on the ESS; 52% (n = 46) scored ≥16 on the SHI; 51% (n = 45) scored ≥10 on the ISI; 28% (n = 25) had intermediate or high risk of OSA; and 40% (n = 35) indicated possible RLS. Pain level was significantly associated with PSQI (r(86) = 0.277, p = .009) and ISI (r(86) = 0.268, p = .012). CONCLUSIONS There was a higher prevalence of sleep disturbances in adults seeking physical therapy services than in the general population. Increased pain severity was associated with poorer sleep quality and increased insomnia symptoms. This study highlights the need to screen patients for sleep disturbances.

Abstract
(1) Background: This exploratory study aims to explore the relationship between nonspecific chronic spinal pain (nCSP) and insomnia symptoms, by examining the interconnections, strengths, and directional dependence of the symptoms. In addition, we aim to identify the key symptoms of the nCSP-insomnia relationship and shed light on the bidirectional nature of this relationship. (2) Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of the baseline data (cross-sectional) from a randomized controlled trial, which examined the added value of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) combined with cognition-targeted exercise therapy, conducted in collaboration with the Universiteit Gent and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). One hundred and twenty-three nCSP patients with comorbid insomnia were recruited through the participating hospitals, advertisements, announcements in local newspapers, pharmacies, publications from support groups, and primary care. To explore the interconnections and directionality between symptoms and the strengths of the relationships, we estimated a regularized Gaussian graphical model and a directed acyclic graph. (3) Results: We found only one direct, but weak, link between sleep and pain, namely, between average pain and difficulties maintaining sleep. (4) Conclusions: Despite the lack of strong direct links between sleep and pain, pain and sleep seem to be indirectly linked via anxiety and depression symptoms, acting as presumable mediators in the network of nCSP and comorbid insomnia. Furthermore, feeling slowed down and fatigue emerged as terminal nodes, implying their role as consequences of the network.

Abstract
Study Objectives Given the barriers to good sleep in corrections facilities and the lack of research in this area, the current study aimed to characterize sleep quality and insomnia incidence in women in jail. Furthermore, we aimed to investigate the relation of sleep to depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and trauma exposure in incarcerated women. Lastly, we examined self-reports of environmental and individual factors that impaired sleeping in this population. Methods Participants included 176 women incarcerated in two jails in southeast Idaho. Participants were randomly selected to complete several self-report questionnaires, including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Insomnia Severity Index, verbally administered by interviewers. Results A majority of participants endorsed poor sleep quality (76%) and subthreshold or higher levels of insomnia (70%). Multiple regression analyses found that depressive symptoms and PTSD symptoms were both significantly related to insomnia and poor sleep quality. Excessive noise, poor bedding, and mental health were commonly cited factors that disrupted sleep. Conclusions These results are consistent with previous literature that has examined these outcomes in prison populations and incarcerated populations in other countries. Correctional facilities can consider altering environmental factors that impair sleep to not only promote better overall health but also as a way to address common manifestations of poor mental health in their inmate populations. Screening for and treating mental health problems, namely depression and PTSD, is another way these facilities can improve inmate health and promote better sleep.

Abstract
Acupressure mats are promoted as stress management tools for easy and effective self-application, promising reduced stress and increased well-being. However, the scientific evidence for these effects is based on few experimental studies and lacks the examination of acupressure mats as a solitary relaxation tool. Our study aimed to examine which changes in stress and well-being can be expected from the use of acupressure mats by healthy young people on the subjective and psychophysiological level. Unexperienced participants practiced relaxation for three weeks either with an acupressure mat or without any tools (active control group [CG]). As a results, subjective well-being and stress decreased, while sleep quality and concentration endurance increased across groups. Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), pain threshold and pain tolerance did not change significantly from pre- to post-training measurements. Most importantly, no significant differences were found between groups, indicating that training with an acupressure mat yielded no superior effects compared with an active control condition in healthy young students. As a conclusion, taking time to relax has some but limited beneficial effects on the subjective levels independent of the specific method for healthy students. Potential beneficial effects of acupressure mats might be bound to specific impairments, such as tension pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over recent decades, a growing body of evidence has emerged linking the composition of the gut microbiota to sleep regulation. Interestingly, the prevalence of sleep disorders is commonly related to cardiometabolic comorbidities such as diabetes, impaired lipid metabolism, and metabolic syndrome (MetS). In this complex scenario, the role of the gut-brain axis as the main communicating pathway between gut microbiota and sleep regulation pathways in the brain reveals some common host-microbial biomarkers in both sleep disturbances and MetS. As the biological mechanisms behind this complex interacting network of neuroendocrine, immune, and metabolic pathways are not fully understood yet, the present systematic review aims to describe common microbial features between these two unrelated chronic conditions. RESULTS This systematic review highlights a total of 36 articles associating the gut microbial signature with MetS or sleep disorders. Specific emphasis is given to studies evaluating the effect of dietary patterns, dietary supplementation, and probiotics on MetS or sleep disturbances. CONCLUSIONS Dietary choices promote microbial composition and metabolites, causing both the amelioration and impairment of MetS and sleep homeostasis.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the first year of medical school on the relationship between nutritional knowledge and sleep. To achieve this, first-year medical students at Wroclaw Medical University were invited to participate in the study during both the initial and final months of their first academic year. The study included 570 students in the initial period and 705 in the latter. The research questionnaire comprised the KomPAN, assessing nutritional knowledge, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), evaluating sleep quality. The majority of students demonstrated at least sufficient nutritional knowledge, while approximately two-thirds of students experienced poor sleep in both periods. Notably, sleep quality further deteriorated in the second period (PSQI total score: 6.86 vs. 7.38, p = 0.0157). This change was influenced mainly by a decrease in sleep duration and an increase in the use of sleep medications (both p < 0.0001). The significant difference in overall sleep quality between different nutritional knowledge levels emerged only in the second semester, where students with the highest nutritional knowledge slept the best, while those with the lowest slept the worst (p = 0.0001). Crucially, in both periods, the use of sleep medications was highest among individuals with insufficient nutritional knowledge. Throughout the academic year, the usage increased for all except those with the highest nutritional knowledge, who exhibited the best sleep (p < 0.0001). The escalating use of sleep medications among medical students warrants greater attention, and leveraging the relationship between nutritional knowledge and sleep could prove beneficial, as positive habits in one domain may positively influence the other.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health care professionals (HCPs) working on the frontlines of health care emergencies/pandemics often experience elevated anxiety, stress and reduced quality of sleep. Yoga is a mind-body practice that has been proven to effective in improving physical and mental health. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of integrated Yoga intervention on mental health measures and sleep quality among HCPs working during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 110 HCPs, including Doctors and nursing staff, with an age range of 20 to 65 years who were recruited through a convenience sampling method and assigned to a Yoga group (n = 55) or a control group (n = 55). The Yoga group received a weekly one-hour Yoga session followed by a 30-minute self-practice three times a week at home for one month. The control group followed routine activity. Heart rate (HR), Blood Pressure, stress measures (Perceived Stress and visual analogue Scale for Stress), COVID-related anxiety, Sleep Quality, Quality of life and Preservative Thinking were assessed before and after the intervention. RESULTS A significant decrease in stress measures, COVID-19-related anxiety and fear, and perseverative thinking was noticed in the Yoga group. Sleep quality and quality of life also improved significantly. The control group showed no significant change. At one month, the Yoga group showed significantly greater improvement in stress measures, COVID-19-related anxiety and fear, perseverative thinking, sleep quality and quality of life compared to the control group. CONCLUSION Yoga practice during the public health crisis would help reduce anxiety and stress and improve sleep among HCPs. Further randomized controlled trials are warranted.

Abstract
The core of healthy aging is intrinsic capacity (IC) that consists of major elements, i.e., cognition, locomotion, vitality, sensory capacity, and psychological aspect. This cross-sectional study analyzes data of the Gan-Dau Healthy Longevity Plan, targeting community-dwelling adults aged 50 years or older. The participants completed the assessment, in addition to WHO IC, including the Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) for cognitive performance, 6 m walking speed (m/s),timed up-and-go test (s) and hand grip strength (Kg) for locomotor assessment, Cardiovascular health study (CHS) for frailty assessment, Mini Nutrition assessment short form (MNA-SF) for nutrition. Psychological aspect including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for sleep quality, the Geriatric Depression Scale-5 (GDS-5) for depressive symptoms, the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) for resilience, and the Chinese Happiness Inventory (CHI) for happiness levels. The study enrolled 810 participants (mean age of 68.45 ± 8.05 years, 32% male) and revealed that 94.7% of participants exhibited impairments in IC, with visual capacity and cognition being the most common deficit items of IC. Resilience levels varied, with 37.4% of men and 33.5% of women exhibiting moderate to low resilience. Only 23.4% of male participants and 21.1% female participants reported a high level of happiness. Resilience was found to partially mediate the relationship between intrinsic capacity and happiness, with approximately 6.6% of the variance in happiness being mediated by resilience. In conclusion, the study provides valuable insights into the connections between psychological aspect, IC, and healthy aging.
