Abstract
OBJECTIVES Activation of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) to remove biofilm from lateral canal is important for the success of endodontic treatment. This study aimed to compare the biofilm dissolving capacity of different irrigation techniques in resin blocks with two lateral canals manufactured with 3D printers. Materials and methods: Biofilm-mimicking hydrogel was placed in the upper and lower lateral canals of 75 resin blocks. Main canals of the blocks were irrigated with 5% NaOCl. Then, the blocks were randomly divided into five groups: sonic activation (SA), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), intracanal heating (ICH), self-adjusting file (SAF) and control. The amount of hydrogel removed was measured by weighing the blocks before and after the treatment and further visually scored. Data were analyzed using Kruskall Wallis H, Wilcoxon, Tukey Post-hoc HSD (Honestly Significant Difference) and one-way ANOVA tests. RESULTS The SAF group showed the highest hydrogel scores compared to other groups (p < 0.05). The hydrogel dissolution capacity of the SA group was lower compared to SAF, PUI and ICH techniques (p < 0.05). Based on visual scoring, SAF group was superior to other activation methods (p < 0.05) which are similar to each other (p > 0.05) in both upper and lower lateral canals. Conclusion: All activation methods were superior than the control group. The SAF system demonstrated superior hydrogel dissolving ability, while SA, PUI, and ICH groups showed similar effectiveness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endodontic sealers are expected to provide a favorable adhesion for a successful seal. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and Hydroxyethylidene Diphosphonic acid (HEDP) on bond strength of AH Plus and EndoSequence BC HiFlow sealers to root canal walls. METHODS This study utilized 144 mandibular human premolars. Root canals were shaped using ProTaper Next system. Teeth were divided into 4 groups of 36 according to final irrigation: Group 1: NaOCl, EDTA; Group 2: NaOCl, HEDP (mixed with distilled water); Group 3: HEDP (mixed with NaOCl); Group 4: NaOCl only. Teeth were then divided into 2 subgroups (n = 18) and filled by AH Plus or BC Sealer HiFlow using warm vertical compaction. Teeth were kept at 37 °C with 100% humidity for 7 days. Using the IsoMet device, horizontal sections with a thickness of approximately 1 mm were taken from each sample from the apical, middle and coronal third of the root. Bond strength was tested using an Instron universal testing device at a constant speed of 1 mm/min until failure. Statistical analysis was performed using Shapiro-Wilk normality test, one-way analysis of variance and Three-Way ANOVA for intergroup comparisons. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were observed between all groups (p = 0,0001). Push-out averages of NaOCl, EDTA group were significantly higher than NaOCl, HEDP; HEDP (NaOCl) and NaOCl groups (p = 0,0001). Push-out averages of NaOCl group were significantly lower than NaOCl, HEDP and HEDP (NaOCl) groups (p = 0,0001). No significant difference was observed between AH Plus and BC Sealer HiFlow (p = 0,883). Push out averages of the apical region were significantly higher than others and those of middle region were significantly higher than coronal (p = 0,0001). Cohesive failure was prevalent in NaOCl, EDTA, NaOCl, HEDP and HEDP (NaOCl) groups and mixed failure was prevalent in NaOCl group. CONCLUSIONS Irrigation using chelating agents such as EDTA and HEDP mixed with NaOCl gave higher adhesion compared to teeth where only NaOCl was used. EDTA and HEDP mixed with NaOCl can be advocated both for resin based and calcium silicate based sealers.

Abstract
AIM This study evaluated the smear layer removal provided by conventional, sonic, and ultrasonic irrigation techniques. METHODOLOGY Forty extracted human mandibular first premolars were selected and instrumented using the ProTaper Next System files and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite. Afterward, they were divided into 4 groups (n. 10) according to the irrigation technique used to perform the final irrigation with a chelating solution (17% EDTA): conventional irrigation (CI), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), EndoActivator System (EAS), and Perfect Clean System (PCS). The smear layer removal was determined through a score after evaluating scanning electron microscope images (1.000x) obtained at 1, 5, 8, and 12mm from the working length (WL). Statistical analyses were carried out by the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests with a significance level of 5% (P < 0.05). RESULTS All irrigation techniques were unable to promote an effective smear layer removal at 1mm from the WL in comparison with the other locations (P < .05). At 5, 8, and 12mm from the WL, no statistically significant differences were observed among CI, PUI, EAS, and PCS (P > 0.05). At 12mm from the WL, statistically significant differences were only identified after comparing PCS and CI (P < .05). CONCLUSION The smear layer removal was only efficient at 5, 8, and 12 from the WL with no significant statistical differences among CI, PUI, EAS, and PCS (P > 0.05).

Abstract
Introduction Obturation of the root canal is the most critical step in endodontic treatment, which aims to provide a hermetic seal and prevent regrowth and entry of bacteria into the canal. To achieve this, many sealers are used in endodontics. Aim To evaluate the effectiveness of the apical seal obtained by different sealers used in conjunction with the single cone obturation technique using gutta-percha under the stereomicroscope. Materials and methods Extracted human single-rooted teeth were taken and decoronated at the cementoenamel junction. The access cavity was prepared, and biomechanical preparation was completed. The samples were randomly assigned to four groups consisting of 20 teeth each according to the root canal sealer used and categorized as group I, group II, group III, and group IV. Group I (n = 20)-Endoseal (Prevest DenPro), group II (n = 20)-Apexit Plus (Ivoclar Vivadent), group III (n = 20)-MTA-FillApex (Angelus), and group IV (n = 20)-Ceraseal (Meta Biomed). The teeth were immersed in Indian ink for 7 days and finally transferred to methyl salicylate for diaphanization. The extent of dye penetration was measured using the stereomicroscope. Statistical data analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey test. Results Microleakage was seen in all the groups. Apical leakage was maximum for the Endoseal group, followed by MTA Fillapex, Apexit, and Ceraseal. Groups were compared by one-factor ANOVA, and the significance of the mean difference was measured using Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) and post hoc test. A statistically significant difference in the depth of dye penetration was observed among the groups (F = 28.66, p < 0.001). Conclusion It was concluded that there were statistically significant differences among the experimental groups. Ceraseal endodontic root canal sealer provided a significantly better apical seal, followed by Apexit and MTA Fillapex, whereas Endoseal showed the least sealing ability. Abstract
A layer of smear that coats the walls of root canals is produced by root canal instrumentation, which could be unfavorable to endodontic therapy. The endodontic irrigant SmearOFF is designed to effectively remove both the smear layer and bacteria concurrently. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of SmearOFF and 17% EDTA in removing the smear layer across the coronal, middle, and apical thirds of root canals. Sixty-four single-canal mandibular premolar roots were chosen. Two irrigant protocols were separated into two sets of thirty-two teeth, respectively, Group 1 (6% NaOCL/SmearOFF) and Group 2 (6% NaOCl/17% EDTA.) Until X2, the ProtaperNext rotary system (Dentsply, Maillefer, Switzerland), with a COXO C-SMART Endomotor (Foshan COXO Medical instrument Co., Ltd., China) was utilized for the shaping of all teeth, the equipment settings were tuned to 300 revolutions per minute (rpm) and a torque of 3 Newton-centimeters (Ncm). Before applying the final irrigants, an initial irrigation with 6% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) was performed using a 27-G side-vented needle. An ultrasonic gadget, EndoUltra, was utilized to activate the irrigation. After that, the determination of how well the proposed solutions worked on the prepared teeth was conducted by scanning electron microscopy. The mean smear layer scores were lower in all three regions (coronal, middle, and apical) using 17% EDTA in comparison with the samples treated with SmearOFF. Despite that, there were no significant differences between G1, 6% NaOCL/SmearOFF and G2, 6% NaOCL/17% EDTA in smear layer removal according to Kruskal-Wallis tests and Mann-Whitney U-tests (p < 0.05). Considering the findings of this investigation, both 17% EDTA and SmearOFF serve as chelating agents, demonstrating the capability to effectively remove the smear layer. This process is facilitated with the assistance of passive ultrasonic irrigation at intervals of every third of the root canal.

Abstract
This review article explores the fundamental principles of modern endodontics with a focus on root canal cleaning and shaping. It reviews commonly used endodontic irrigant, namely sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), herbal extracts, chlorhexidine (CHX), and chelating agents, highlighting their properties, applications, and potential drawbacks. NaOCl, a key antimicrobial agent, demonstrates effectiveness against various microorganisms but poses challenges such as high cytotoxicity. Herbal extracts, gaining recognition in endodontics, present an alternative with potential advantages in preserving dentin integrity. CHX, known for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, is discussed in both liquid and gel formulations, emphasizing its role in reducing smear layer formation and preserving hybrid layer durability. Chelating agents, specifically ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and citric acid, play a vital role in removing the smear layer, enhancing dentin permeability, and facilitating the penetration of antimicrobial agents. The review article underscores the importance of careful application and consideration of each irrigant's properties to ensure safe and effective endodontic procedures. It serves as a valuable guide for clinicians in selecting appropriate irrigants based on specific treatment requirements.

Abstract
Background/purpose Establishing effective irrigation methods is warranted to ensure the predictability of minimally invasive root canal instrumentation. This study aimed to compare the smear layer removal efficacy of different irrigation techniques in root canals instrumented with TruNatomy nickel-titanium rotary instruments. Materials and methods Experiment 1: Extracted human mandibular incisors were instrumented using TruNatomy Shaping Files up to Small (#20/0.04), Prime (#26/0.04), or Medium (#36/0.03) (n = 17, each) and irrigated with EDTA, NaOCl, and again with EDTA using syringe irrigation (SI). Experiment 2: Extracted mandibular incisors were instrumented using TruNatomy Small and irrigated with EDTA and NaOCl as in Experiment 1, using (1) conventional laser-activated irrigation (LAI) with an erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser unit at 30 mJ/10 Hz (LAI 30/10) or 70 mJ/20 Hz (LAI 70/20), (2) photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) (20 mJ/15 Hz), (3) ultrasonic-activated irrigation, or (4) SI (n = 13 each). Five additional canals served as negative controls (no irrigation). The smear layer on the canal wall was scored under scanning electron microscopy. Results In Experiment 1, the TruNatomy Small group exhibited significantly higher smear layer scores compared to the other groups in the apical and middle thirds. In Experiment 2, the LAI 70/20 and PIPS groups demonstrated significantly lower smear layer scores compared to the LAI 30/10 and SI groups in the apical third. Conclusion Conservative instrumentation using the TruNatomy Small reduced the cleaning efficacy of irrigation. However, PIPS performed satisfactory for smear layer removal without injury to the root canal wall.

Abstract
This study is to examine the effect of graphene oxide (GO) and GO-based nanocomposites (GO_EDTA, GO_CHIT) on the smear layer by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sixty human single-rooted anterior teeth were used. Samples were randomly categorised into six groups. Distilled water in group 1, 17% EDTA in group 2, chitosan (CHIT) solution in group 3, GO solution in group 4, GO_EDTA solution in group 5 and GO_CHIT in group 6 were used as irrigation solutions. Photomicrographs were acquired from the coronal, middle and apical parts of the samples by SEM. Statistical analyses were performed using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests. There was a statistically significant difference among the groups (p < 0.003). Adding GO to CHIT and EDTA did not affect removing the smear layer in all segments (p < 0.003). Incorporating GO into EDTA and CHIT solutions did not change their interaction with the smear layer.

Abstract
The aim was to investigate the influence of endodontic irrigation solutions and protocols on the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) to dentin using an etch-and-rinse (ER) or self-etch (SE) adhesive approach. Eighty extracted human molars were ground to dentin. After pretreating for 27 min (21 min-3 min-3 min) with five different endodontic irrigation protocols (Group 1: NaOCl-EDTA-NaOCl; Group 2: NaOCl-NaOCl-EDTA; Group 3: NaOCl-NaCl-NaOCl; Group 4: Dual Rinse-Dual Rinse-Dual Rinse; Group 5: NaCl-NaCl-NaCl), an ER (Optibond FL, Kerr) or a SE (Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray) adhesive system was applied. After light-curing, composite build-ups were made and cut into dentin-composite sticks. μTBS and failure modes were analyzed. Nonparametric statistical analyses (α = 0.05) were performed for comparison of the five groups within each type of adhesive as well as between the two adhesive systems used. The use of an ER instead of a SE adhesive system resulted in significantly higher μTBS for all irrigation protocols except for group 1 (NaOCl-EDTA-NaOCl) and 2 (NaOCl-NaOCl-EDTA). A statistical difference between the five different endodontic irrigation protocols was only found within the SE adhesive group, where group 1 (NaOCl-EDTA-NaOCl) achieved highest values. The use of an ER adhesive system cancels out the effect of the endodontic irrigation solution. The highest μTBS was achieved when using a NaOCl-EDTA-NaOCl-irrigation protocol in combination with Clearfil SE Bond, which shows that the selection of the endodontic irrigation should match the corresponding SE adhesive system.

Abstract
The purpose of this systematic review of meta-analysis was to compare the effectiveness of removing the smearing layer using EDTA versus Chitosan (Ch) and Chitosan nanoparticles (Ch-NPs). A search was performed in four electronic databases (Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane). The included studies were assessed by two reviewers using Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal checklist for the quasi-experimental studies. Outcomes obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and conventional methods were presented as standardized mean differences alongside 95% confidence intervals. Seven investigations employed 212 single-root teeth. In the apical section (p = .317, 95% CI = -0.820 to 0.266, Tau2 = 0.387), middle segment (p = .914, 95% CI = -1.019 to 0.912, Tau2 = 1.027), and coronal segment (p = .277, 95% CI = -1.008 to 0.289, Tau2 = 0.378). This meta-analysis found no difference between Ch, Ch-NPs, and EDTA in removing the smear layer in the three segments. This systematic review is designed to show evidence related to the PICO question, in which our outcome is smear layer removal and not the clinical success of such a treatment. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of chitosan and chitosan nanoparticles with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in removing the smear layer, a layer of debris and organic material on the tooth surface, through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The removal of the smear layer is crucial for successful dental treatments, as it enhances the adhesion of restorative materials and improves the penetration of antimicrobial agents into dentinal tubules. The researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, searching various databases of electron microscopy results for relevant in vitro studies comparing the effects of chitosan or chitosan nanoparticles with EDTA on smear layer removal. The results encourage further exploration of chitosan and chitosan nanoparticles for clinical use in dentistry, while considering their specific applications and long-term effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aimed to evaluate the potential for the dissolution of organic tissue in areas of simulated complexity and cleaning of root canal walls of the new iVac® endodontic irrigation system. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty mandibular premolars were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy before and after biomechanical preparation. Then, they were distributed according to the final irrigation protocol into groups with conventional irrigation, ultrasonic agitation with metallic insert (UA), and iVac® system, and new photomicrographs were obtained. For tissue dissolution analysis, glass capillaries filled with catgut were attached to the cervical and apical thirds of twenty-one prototyped upper incisors. They were weighed before and after the previously mentioned irrigation protocols. The data were statistically compared with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS The final irrigation provided greater cleaning of the root canal walls in the cervical, middle, and apical thirds of the root canals (P < 0.05), with no statistically significant difference between UA and iVac®, regardless of the analyzed thirds. Both ultrasonic irrigation protocols dissolved a significantly greater volume than the conventional irrigation protocol (P < 0.05), with no difference between the two protocols (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The iVac® system showed root canal wall cleaning and tissue dissolution similar to UA with a metallic insert, and both were superior to conventional irrigation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The new irrigation system iVac is more effective than conventional irrigation and has similar root canal wall cleaning and tissue dissolution to UA.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the amount of erosion during activated endodontic irrigation with either HEDP or EDTA via high-resolution micro-computed tomography. Two root canals of twenty premolars were prepared with ProTaper Next and irrigated with sodium hypochlorite. Palatal canals, which served as control groups, were sealed, while buccal canals were further irrigated with either EDTA (n = 10) or HEDP (n = 10), which served as test groups. Micro-CT was performed to measure erosion depth. For 2D and 3D measurements, non-parametric repeated ANOVA measurements and post hoc tests were performed. 2D analysis showed highly significant differences between the case groups at each position of the root (p ≤ 0.01). The cervical and apical positions showed significant differences in the EDTA group (p = 0.03). The 3D analysis also showed significant differences between both chelating agents (p < 0.01) and the case and control groups (p = 0.01). The mean erosion depths in the cervical, middle, and apical thirds of the EDTA group were 45.75, 41.79, and 32.25 µm, and for the HEDP group were 20.25, 16.40, and 15.96 µm, respectively. HEDP seems to have a significantly less erosive effect. Different irrigation protocols with harsher conditions, as might be the case during endodontic retreatment, could be assessed with micro-CT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and/or calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2 ) are commonly used during root canal treatment. Evaluation of their effectiveness regarding clinical and patient-related outcomes requires further understanding. OBJECTIVES To assess the effectiveness of root canal irrigation and dressing for the treatment of teeth with apical periodontitis (AP). METHODS A search was conducted in the PubMed-MEDLINE, Scopus, EMBASE, Google scholar databases and available repositories, followed by hand searches, until July 2021. Eligibility criteria followed the a priori formulated Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcomes, Timing, and Study design (PICOTS) framework. Clinical studies restricted to English language were included. The revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomised trials (RoB 2) was used to assess the quality of included studies. Meta-analyses were performed using the fixed-effect model to obtain Risk Ratio (RR) and 95% Confidence Interval (CI), with sensitivity analysis. Overall quality of evidence of meta-analyses was assessed through the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tool. RESULTS The search identified 1357 records of which six fulfilled the inclusion criteria, providing data for 'irrigation' from 212 teeth and for 'dressings' from 438 teeth. Two studies reported no significant difference regarding the outcome 'pain at 7 days' using 2% chlorhexidine vs. 5.25% NaOCl and EDTA or after using different concentrations of NaOCl (1% vs. 5%). No significant difference was detected between different NaOCl concentrations regarding the reduction of AP. A meta-analysis was possible for the comparison of single-visit (SV) versus multiple-visits including the use of Ca(OH)2 demonstrating a significant effect in favour of SV (RR: 1.10; 95% CI: 1.03-1.19; p = .007; I2 = 0). RoB of included studies was moderate to low. DISCUSSION The use of Ca(OH)2 for the treatment of AP may not be beneficial. There is scarce or no evidence fulfilling the proposed PICOTS regarding irrigants and dressings. CONCLUSIONS There is moderate certainty that SV treatment is associated with better radiographic evidence of normal periodontal ligament space (strict criteria) compared with the use of Ca(OH)2. Reduction of AP is comparable after irrigation with 1% and 5% NaOCl, whereas postoperative pain at 7 days for the irrigants assessed is similar. REGISTRATION PROSPERO database CRD42021260271.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to assess the effect of blood contamination on marginal adaptation of cold ceramic (CC) and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) Angelus using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). METHODS This in vitro experimental study was conducted on 24 extracted single-rooted human teeth. After cleaning and shaping, the root canals were filled with lateral compaction technique. The apical 3 mm of the roots was cut, and cavities with 3 mm depth were created at the apex. The teeth were randomly assigned to two group (n = 12) for the application of CC and MTA Angelus as retrograde filling materials. CC and MTA Angelus were prepared by mixing the powder with blood, and applied in the cavities. After 24 h, their marginal adaptation to the canal walls was assessed by SEM. Data were statistically analyzed by t-test (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS The mean marginal gap was 8.98 μm in the CC, and 16.26 μm in the MTA Angelus group; this difference was statistically significant (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The present in vitro study revealed that following complete blood contamination of powder, CC showed significantly superior marginal adaptation than MTA Angelus as shown by SEM assessment.

Abstract
CONTEXT The smear layer produced during the instrumentation of the root canal contains both organic and inorganic components, and it is recommended to be removed as it has a mixture of bacteria and their byproducts. Irrigants like sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), endodontic irrigant, citric acid, etc., possess the ability to remove the smear layer. Considering the antimicrobial effect, antiinflammatory, cavity disinfectant, nontoxicity, better taste, and aroma of herbal products, a novel approach has been introduced in the field of endodontics. AIMS To assess the efficacy of passion fruit juice in removing the smear layer and its erosive potential in root canals after instrumentation by scanning electron microscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS About 35 single-rooted premolars were divided into five groups-30% passion fruit extract (PFE), 17% EDTA, 17% EDTA + 5.25% NaOCl, 30% PFE + 17% EDTA, and saline. Following irrigation with the above irrigants, each tooth was split into two halves and examined and scored for smear layer removal (modified Torabinejad's criteria) using a scanning electron microscope. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Overall comparison of the irrigant's action on removing the smear layer and their erosive potential was done using the Kruskal-Wallis test, and intergroup comparison of the irrigant action was done using the Mann-Whitney U test. All the statistical analyses were set with a significance level of p < 0.05. RESULTS A total of 30% PFE produced less erosion and statistically significant smear layer removal in the coronal and middle third of the root. When combined with 17% EDTA, it effectively removed the smear layer in all three-thirds of the root. Around 30% PFE + 17% EDTA is less erosive when compared to 17% EDTA + 5.25% NaOCl. CONCLUSION This study revealed that 30% PFE and 30% PFE + 17% EDTA are promising irrigants as root canal disinfectants in endodontics. Abstract
According to contemporary dental standards, the primary goal of endodontic therapy is the chemo-mechanical cleaning of the complex root canal system. Watering root canals with approved solutions and activating them are essential parts of this operation. This review outlines various irrigant activation methods for root canal therapy. Specifically, a comparison among the methods of manual dynamic activation, sonics (subsonic, sonic, and ultrasonic), internal heating, and lasers, was conducted. The results in this work were gathered using Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed databases by searching the following keywords: sodium hypochlorite, cleaning, activation, and irrigation methods. The present work concluded that the use of irrigant activation has a greater benefit than its absence. Regardless, it is impossible to point to a single effective activation method.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Smear layer removal from root canals aid in the penetration of both irrigants and endodontic sealer into the dentinal tubules, thereby improving the efficacy of endodontic treatment. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the smear layer removal ability of a conventional endodontic irrigation regimen, MTAD (mixture of tetracycline, acid, and detergent), and QMix™ (Dentsply Sirona, Charlotte, North Carolina, United States) with that of a mixture of herbal irrigants, namely, aqueous extracts of Azadirachta indica (neem) and Citrus limon (lemon), evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). MATERIALS AND METHODS We selected 40 extracted human premolar teeth for the study, which we randomly divided into five groups (eight samples each) according to irrigation solution: (i) Group A (normal saline); (ii) Group B (conventional endodontic regimen, 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) + 17% ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) + 2% chlorhexidine (CHX)); (iii) Group C (MTAD); (iv) Group D (QMix 2-in-1); and (v) Group E (aqueous extracts of Azadirachta indica and Citrus limon). After we prepared the canals with ProTaper Universal nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary files (Dentsply Sirona) and the respective irrigants, we split the teeth longitudinally to evaluate the amount of remnant smear layer in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds using SEM photomicrographs. We performed statistical analyses of the data using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests, where the level of significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS The SEM analysis of the coronal third showed mean values of 3.83 in Group A, 3.67 in Group B, 2.79 in Group C, 3.63 in Group D, and 4.00 in Group E. The SEM analysis of the middle third showed mean values of 4.00 in Group A, 3.88 in Group B, 3.75 in Group C, 3.50 in Group D, and 3.50 in Group E. The SEM analysis of the apical third showed mean values of 3.92 in Group A, 3.63 in Group B, 3.71 in Group C, 3.88 in Group D, and 3.17 in Group E. Therefore, we found that there were significant statistical differences between the groups when an overall comparison was done for the coronal, middle, and apical third, with a p-value of 0.001. On multiple comparisons across the different tooth-section thirds. Groups A and B showed statistically significant differences in the apical third (p-value=0.017). Groups A and C showed statistically significant differences in the coronal third and middle third (p-values=0.001 and 0.010, respectively). Groups A and D showed statistically significant differences in the middle third (p-value=0.001). Groups A and E showed statistically significant differences in all thirds (p-values=0.039, 0.001, and 0.001, respectively) Conclusion: The conventional needle irrigation with MTAD showed the highest level of smear layer removal ability on the root canal surface, followed by QMix 2-in-1, the Azadirachta indica leaf and Citrus limon extract mixture, and the conventional endodontic regimen. Normal saline showed the lowest smear layer removal effect.

Abstract
The use of chelating agents (CAs) in the endodontic irrigation protocol is required to dissolve the inorganic components of the smear layer. We aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of dental professionals regarding the use of CAs during root canal treatment. A cross-sectional anonymous online survey was conducted among specialized endodontists and general dentists who routinely perform endodontic treatment and work in government-funded or private clinics in Moscow. The 8 min survey consisted of four parts: basic demographic data, knowledge (five items), attitude (four items), and practice (five items). We collected 376 completed questionnaires; a majority of the respondents were general dentists (87.5%) and worked in private clinics (77.4%). Most respondents (83.5%) showed a fair knowledge of the CAs used in endodontics, while 16.5% showed a poor knowledge of the topic. Small yet significant differences were found between endodontists and general practitioners and between dentists employed by private and government-funded clinics. A majority of dental practitioners (83%) demonstrated a positive attitude towards the use of CAs in endodontic treatment, and there were no differences among the study subgroups. Almost a third of the respondents always used chelating solutions during endodontic treatment, while 17% of the respondents did not use them at all. There were significant differences in this parameter between dentists working in private and government-funded clinics. Practice significantly correlated with attitude towards chelating agents and with knowledge of the topic. In conclusion, dental practitioners demonstrated a fair knowledge of CAs. Despite a positive attitude, 71% of the respondents did not use CAs for all endodontic patients.

Abstract
Objectives Over many years, many intracanal irrigants have removed smear layers during routine root canal therapy. The efficacies of conventional endodontic chemical irrigants are documented, but limited research is available on herbal irrigants' role in the endodontic therapy irrigation protocol. This study aimed to evaluate endodontic irrigants' smear layer removal efficacy, namely, 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), green tea extract, and Triphala extract, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Methods Fifty freshly extracted human permanent maxillary and mandibular single-rooted teeth were collected from the Oral Surgery Department of Regional Dental College (RDC), Guwahati, India. The samples were divided into five groups with 10 teeth each: Group A: sterile distilled water (negative control), Group B: 3% NaOCl, Group C: 17% EDTA, Group D: green tea, and Group E: Triphala (citric acid). Each tooth was then longitudinally split and prepared for SEM inspection under 1000X magnification. The comparison of smear layer removal scores between the groups was done by the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test, with the significance level set at p<0.01. Results The comparison of the overall mean smear scores and those at different root portions shows that Group C has the lowest mean score, followed by Group E. The pairwise comparison shows that the difference in the mean smear scores between Group C and the other four groups is statistically significant (p-value<0.05). Moreover, the difference in the overall, coronal, middle, and apical mean smear scores between Group A and Group E was highly significant (p-value<0.001). Conclusions The highest smear layer removal efficacy was observed in the samples treated with 17% EDTA. Moreover, the clearing efficacy of Triphala is significantly better than that of distilled water in smear layer removal.

Abstract
Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) are commonly recommended for effectively removing organic and inorganic components in the smear layer. This layer is found on root canal walls after root canal instrumentation. However, high-concentration EDTA reduces the strength of dentin and the dissolution efficacy of organic substances in NaOCl solution. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of applying nano and submicron diamonds in irrigation solutions with sonic and ultrasonic oscillation for removing the smear layer during endodontic treatment. Extracted single-rooted human teeth were instrumented with ProTaper® Gold (Dentsply Sirona) nickel-titanium rotary instruments. Subsequently, each canal was irrigated with 3% NaOCl, 17% EDTA, distilled water, and 10-1000 nm-sized nano and submicron diamond irrigation solutions, respectively. Sonic and ultrasonic instruments were compared for oscillating the irrigation solutions. The teeth were processed for scanning electron microscopy to observe the efficiency of smear layer removal on the canal walls. Our results indicated that diamond sizes of 50 nm and above irrigation solutions showed significant effectiveness in removing the smear layer following the oscillation of sonic instruments for 10 s. Ultrasonic assisted 500 nm and 1000 nm diamond solutions significantly differed from the other diamond-sized solution in their ability to remove the smear layer. These results suggest that sonic and ultrasonic oscillation with specific sizes of nano and submicron diamond irrigation solution can be used as an alternative approach to removing the smear layer during endodontic treatment. The potential clinical application of root canal treatments can be expected.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ultrasonically-activated irrigation (UAI) is effective in root canal irrigation but may damage canal walls. EDDY is a sonic activation system with flexible working tips that cause no harm to dentinal walls. This review explores the intracanal cleaning efficacy of EDDY compared with UAI in vitro. METHODS The systematic review was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42021235826). A literature search was conducted in six electronic databases. In vitro studies that compared the removal of smear layer, debris, soft tissue or microbes in root canals between EDDY and UAI were included. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed. Meta-analyses were conducted on smear layer removal and debris elimination with the standardized mean difference (SMD). Heterogeneity was measured using the I2 test and the Chi2 test. The random-effect model was used when I2 > 50%, or p < 0.1, otherwise the fixed-effect model was applied. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS 19 articles were included in this systematic review and 7 articles were included in meta-analyses. Meta-analyses on smear layer removal showed unimportant differences between EDDY and UAI at any canal third (coronal [SMD = 0.08, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): -0.29 to 0.45; p = 0.44, I2 = 0%]; middle [SMD = 0.02, 95% CI: -0.44 to 0.47; p = 0.94, I2 = 0%]; apical [SMD = 0.01, 95%CI: -0.35 to 0.38; p = 0.70, I2 = 0%]). Meta-analyses on debris removal evaluated by scanning electron microscope (coronal [SMD = 0.03, 95% CI: -0.41 to 0.46; p = 0.27, I2 = 23%]; middle [SMD = -0.24, 95% CI: -0.83 to 0.35; p = 0.80, I2 = 0%]; apical [SMD = 0.24, 95%CI: -0.20 to 0.67; p = 0.36, I2 = 2%]) and micro-CT (SMD = 0.36, 95% CI: -0.67 to 1.40; p = 0.03, I2 = 70%) both found insignificant differences. No meta-analysis was undertaken on soft-tissue removal and disinfection due to the various study designs, but the qualitative analyses implied that EDDY achieved similar performance to UAI in both aspects. CONCLUSIONS Limited evidence indicated that EDDY was comparable to UAI in removing smear layer, debris, soft tissue and microbes ex vivo. Considering UAI may damage canal walls, EDDY might be a substitute for UAI in irrigation activation. But more randomized clinical trials are required to explore the clinical extrapolation of the results in this review.

Abstract
Background/purpose The efficiency of root canal irrigation has an important impact on the prognosis of root canal treatment. Photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) and shock wave enhanced emission photoacoustic streaming (SWEEPS) are the special modality of Er: YAG laser, whether can they improve the efficiency of root canal irrigation remains to be studied. Materials and methods Fifty human teeth with curved root canals were collected and stored in the thymol solution until used in the study. After traditional endodontic cavities preparation, root canals were prepared to size #35 with a 0.04 taper. The final irrigating techniques were as follows: (I) manual dynamic activation (MDA), (II) ultrasonically activated irrigation (UAI), (III) sonically activated irrigation (SAI), (IV) PIPS, and (V) SWEEPS. Fifty teeth were randomly divided into five groups mentioned above. After root canal preparation, the roots were cleaved longitudinally. The dentine surfaces were photographed from the coronal, middle, and apical third of the root by scanning electron microscopy operated at a low vacuum. Two examiners separately graded each image according to the remained smear layer situations. Results PIPS and SWEEPS groups showed fewer smear layers remaining than the others in the middle and the apical third (P < 0.05) of the root canal. In contrast, in the coronal third, five groups showed no significant difference (P > 0.05). Conclusion PIPS and SWEEPS showed superior smear layer clearing efficiency than traditional irrigating techniques in curved root canals.

Abstract
Irrigation plays an essential role in root canal treatment. The purpose of this narrative review was to critically appraise the experimental methods and models used to study irrigants and irrigation systems and to provide directions for future research. Studies on the antimicrobial effect of irrigants should use mature multispecies biofilms grown on dentine or inside root canals and should combine at least two complementary evaluation methods. Dissolution of pulp tissue remnants should be examined in the presence of dentine and, preferably, inside human root canals. Micro-computed tomography is currently the method of choice for the assessment of accumulated dentine debris and their removal. A combination of experiments in transparent root canals and numerical modeling is needed to address irrigant penetration. Finally, models to evaluate irrigant extrusion through the apical foramen should simulate the periapical tissues and provide quantitative data on the amount of extruded irrigant. Mimicking the in vivo conditions as close as possible and standardization of the specimens and experimental protocols are universal requirements irrespective of the surrogate endpoint studied. Obsolete and unrealistic models must be abandoned in favour of more appropriate and valid ones that have more direct application and translation to clinical Endodontics.

Abstract
Introduction: To evaluate and compare the wettability of bioceramic root canal sealer (BioRoot™ RCS, Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France) on dentin with and without erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser irradiation using different frequencies and energies. Methods: A hundred single-rooted tooth samples were divided into five groups of 20 samples each. Each group was treated with different methods before sealer application as follows: Group 1: Treated with 2 ml 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) irrigant for one minute (control group); group 2: Irradiated with Er:YAG laser for one minute (8 Hz frequency and 200mJ energy); group 3: Irradiated with Er:YAG laser for one minute (8 Hz frequency and 400mJ energy); group 4: Irradiated with Er:YAG laser for one minute (16 Hz frequency and 200mJ energy); group 5: (n=20) samples irradiated with Er:YAG laser for one minute (16 Hz frequency and 400mJ energy). Bioceramic root canal sealer application was done onto the treated dentin specimen using a micropipette. The contact angle of the drop of the sealer with the dentin surface was measured after five minutes using a contact angle analyzer. Results: There was no significant difference in wettability between Er:YAG laser using 8Hz frequency and 200mJ energy and Er:YAG laser using 8Hz frequency and 400mJ energy. However, there was a significant difference between the other two groups of Er:YAG laser using 16Hz frequency and 400mJ energy and Er: YAG laser using 16Hz frequency and 200mJ energy. Conclusion: Contact angle was found to be lowest in the group that was irradiated with Er:YAG laser for one minute (16 Hz frequency and 400mJ energy) before the sealer application. The test findings demonstrated that the control group had the highest contact angle (low wettability) and it was statistically significant with all other groups.

Abstract
In root canal therapy, irrigating solutions are employed to eliminate the bacterial load and also prepare dentin for sealer interaction. The aim of this research was to assess how irrigating solutions employed on their own or in sequence affected the tooth structure. The best way to prepare the tooth for obturation using hydraulic calcium silicate cement (HCSC) sealers and gutta-percha, thus guiding clinicians on a matched irrigation-obturation strategy for optimized root canal treatment was investigated. The effect of irrigating solutions on dentine was investigated by assessing changes in dentin microhardness, ultrastructure and mineral content, organic/inorganic matter, surface roughness and Young’s modulus. The interaction of four root canal sealers with the dentin was analysed by assessing the changes in microhardness of the dentin after sealer placement and also the sealer to dentin interface by scanning electron and confocal laser microscopy. The irrigating solutions damaged the dentin irreversibly both when used on their own and in combination. The best sequence involved sodium hypochlorite followed by chelator and a final rinse with sodium hypochlorite and obturation using HCSC sealers that enabled the restoration of dentin properties. The HCSC sealers did not rely on chelator irrigating solutions for a good material adaptation to dentin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to assess the effect of a 980-nm diode laser following chemomechanical root canal preparation on the severity of post-operative pain (PP) after root canal treatment (RCT). METHODS This study included asymptomatic, single-rooted teeth with a periapical index (PAI) score of 3 or 4. All the patients received RCT, including dressing with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), during two visits. The patients were randomly divided into two groups (n:30): a control group, in which the final irrigation was performed using 5 ml of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI), followed by 5 ml of 17% and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and 5 ml of distilled water, and a laser group, in which the root canals were irradiated using a 980-nm diode laser after the final irrigation at both visits. The pain levels after both visits were evaluated using a visual analogue scale (VAS) after 8 h, 24 h, 48 h and 7 d. In addition, the time intervals to medication intake were recorded. The collected data were statistically analysed using the chi-square and Mann-Whitney U test (p < 0.05). RESULTS The average pain level in the control group 24 h after the first visit was significantly higher than that in the laser group (p < 0.05). The average pain level 24 h and 48 h after the second visit was significantly higher in the control group (p < 0.05). The levels of PP 24 h after the first visit were higher than those after the second visit only in the control group (p < 0.05). After the first visit, analgesic use in the control group was significantly higher after 8 h (40%) and 24 h (23%) as compared with that in the laser group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Root canal irradiation with a diode laser may reduce PP after RCT in single-rooted teeth with a PAI score of 3 or 4. Abstract
Objective: To study the effectiveness of various concentrations of citric acid (CA) added to 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) on smear layer removal from the root canal wall and antimicrobial efficacy against Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) and Candida albicans (C. albicans). Methods: Fifty-three single-rooted mandibular premolars were decoronate and the root canals underwent mechanical instrumentation using MTwo rotary files to size 40/0.06. The samples were then randomly divided into 5 groups according to the root canal irrigants to be used: 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), 2% CHX, 1%, 6%, and 10% citric acid-modified 2% chlorhexidine (CAmCHX). Three teeth irrigated with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) were used as a negative control. The smear layer removal effectiveness was evaluated under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Images were randomly taken at the apical, middle, and coronal third level. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Disc diffusion and direct exposure tests were performed along with three additional control groups consisting of 1%, 6%, and 10% CA groups to assess and compare the antimicrobial efficacy of irrigants against E. faecalis and C. albicans. Statistical analysis was conducted using one-way ANOVA and Dunnett’s T3 tests. Results: Smear layer removal effectiveness in 17% EDTA group and 6% and 10% CAmCHX groups were not significantly different in the coronal and apical third of the root canal (P>0.05), however at the middle third of the root canal, the 10% CAmCHX group had significantly less remaining smear layer than all of the other experimental groups (P<0.05). There was significantly more smear layer remnant in the CHX group (P<0.01). For antimicrobial efficacy, the largest growth inhibition zone against E. faecalis was recorded in the 10% CAmCHX group (P<0.05). For planktonic E. faecalis, 1%, 6%, and 10% CAmCHX demonstrated an insignificant difference in antimicrobial efficacy compared to CHX (P>0.05). CA demonstrated no antifungal effect against C. albicans. Whereas, 6% and 10% CAmCHX resulted in the largest growth inhibition zone. Also, adding CA to CHX resulted in an insignificant difference in antifungal effect against planktonic C. albicans compared to CHX (P>0.05). Conclusion: When CA was added into CHX, the mixed irrigant demonstrated smear layer removal ability. Additionally, its antimicrobial effect remained the same.

Abstract
The combination of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) has been advocated as an effective irrigation methodology to remove organic and inorganic matter in root canal therapy. Yet, it was suggested that both solutions might lead to structural changes of the dentinal wall surface, depending on the order of application which might affect sealer mechanical retention. This study aims to evaluate the effect of different irrigating protocols on dentin surface roughness using quantitative 3D surface texture analysis. Data stems from 150 human root dentin sections, divided into five groups, each prepared according to one of the following protocols: Negative control; 17% EDTA; 17% EDTA followed by 5.25% NaOCl; 5.25% NaOCl; and 5.25% NaOCl followed by 17% EDTA. Each dentin sample was examined for its three-dimensional surface texture using a high-resolution confocal disc-scanning measuring system. EDTA 17% and the combined EDTA 17% with NaOCl 5.25% showed considerably higher roughness properties compared to the control and to NaOCl 5.25% alone. However, the irrigation sequence did not affect the dentin roughness properties. Therefore, mechanical retention is probably not dependent upon the selection of irrigation protocol sequence.

Abstract
Objectives
This study tested the hypothesis that modifying the sequence of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)/ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) irrigation during root canal shaping would improve apical cleanliness in moderately curved canals.
Materials and Methods
Forty-five root canals were prepared using Protaper Gold with three irrigation protocols. Standard irrigation (SI) used 0.5 mL 3% NaOCl between each instrument, followed by 5 mL 17% EDTA manually agitated for 30 seconds. Reverse irrigation (RI) used 0.5 mL of 17% EDTA between each instrument, then 5 mL of 3% NaOCl, manually agitated for 30 seconds. Reverse irrigation plus (RI+) was similar to RI, except NaOCl (5 mL), used as a final rinse, was allowed to interact for 3 minutes with dentin before manual agitation (30 seconds).
Root canal cleanliness was evaluated under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) (Hulsmann score); the chemical composition of dentin after irrigation was analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Statistical Analysis
Results were compared using Kruskal–Wallis ANOVA by ranks and Wilcoxon matched paired posthoc tests. A Chi-square test assessed whether the best cleanliness would demonstrate a significant association with one irrigation protocol; odds ratio calculation was performed using score “1” versus score “2 or more” (2+) (

< 0.05).
Results
In the apical region, cleanliness was better in RI+ than SI and both significantly better than RI. Odd ratios indicate that the cleanliness in RI+ was significantly better than RI and SI groups (

< 0.000 and 0.003, respectively). Independently of the irrigation protocol, EDX analyses showed no chemical alteration of root dentin.
Conclusions
Using 17% EDTA during shaping, followed by 3% NaOCl rinse for 3 minutes, improved apical cleanliness without inducing erosion of dentin.

Abstract
Background Aim of this trial was to evaluate the combined clinical and radiographic success rate of endodontic treatment using passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) and laser activated irrigation (LAI) as compared to conventional syringe irrigation.
Material and Methods Permanent incisors and single rooted premolars were assessed for eligibility and 69 patients were randomly divided into three treatment groups (n=23) by allocation concealment method and irrigation was performed in accordance with the allocated group. Teeth were evaluated clinically and radiographically with CBCT after 6 months and 12 months of the treatment.
Results A significant difference was observed in the radiographic healing rates among three groups (χ2=12.29, p=0.05). On comparing the final outcome among the three groups (n=19), it was found that 2 (10.5%) cases of group I(Conventional Syringe irrigation), 7 (36.8%) cases of group II (Passive ultrasonic irrigation) and 8 (42.1%) cases of group III(Laser activated irrigation) were healed while under healing category 13 (68.4%) cases of group I, 12 (63.2%) cases of group II and 11 (57.9%) of group III were observed whereas 4 (21.1%) cases were categorised as diseased in group I only.
Conclusions LAI and PUI can increase the predictability of the endodontic treatment success in cases of chronic apical periodontitis. Key words:Cone-beam computed tomography, CBCT-PAI, Irrigation, LASER, Radiographic healing, Root canal treatment, Ultrasonic.

Abstract
Internal root resorption is characterised by progressive loss of tooth substance initiating at the root canal wall as a result of clastic activity. This report describes a case of a perforating internal root resorption on a maxillary central incisor in a 25-year-old patient. The perforating internal root resorption was firstly diagnosed with periapical radiographs and assessed with full detail with the aid of CBCT, allowing determination of the extension and areas involved in the resorption lesion, as well as the treatment planning. According to these findings, a MTA barrier was performed on the root, -coronally to the resorption lesion, leaving the root apically to the resorption lesion untouched. Clinical findings and periapical radiographs indicated complete resolution of the radiolucency associated with the resorptive defect, with reestablishment of lamina dura along the root and occlusion of the lumen of the root canal in the apical segment, after a 5-year follow-up.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the smear layer removal efficacy of novel Saver® irrigating solution including 5% EDTA and to compare the 17% EDTA as the most used counterpart. Forty-four single-rooted teeth were divided into four groups, were instrumented, and irrigated. The smear treatment groups were as follows: sterile distilled water; 5.25% sodium hypochlorite; Saver®; 17% EDTA. The root samples were blinded. The micrographic images of root samples were collected by scanning electron microscope. The percentages of open dentin tubules were quantified using an image analysis software on micrographs. Two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's multiple comparisons was used (p < .05). The 17% EDTA showed the highest percentages of open dentin tubules than the other treatments (p < .01). The mean percentages of open dentin tubules of 17% EDTA revealed statistically highly significant differences than Saver® treatment in all root regions (p < .01). Dentin tubules were covered by dense smear layer in distilled water irrigation whereas, the tubular pattern of dentin structure was not observed in hypochlorite irrigation. The commercial Saver® product presented to be less cleaning property on the smear layer than 17% EDTA and failed to show any improvement in the removal of smear layer compared with its tested counterpart.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cleaning and shaping are necessary to allow for the delivery of irrigants and medicaments to the apical third of the canal. Standard treatment irrigation generally uses a conventional needle and some frequency of sonic activation. The GentleWave System (GWS; Sonendo, Inc, Laguna Hills, CA) combines irrigant delivery with multisonic activation. This randomized clinical trial aimed to determine if the GWS significantly decreases the incidence and intensity of postoperative pain. METHODS Patients used a numeric rating scale to record their pain level at the 6-hour time point before treatment. All participants were randomly divided into 2 groups and were blind to the treatment they received. The standard (control) group received endodontic treatment with conventional side-vented needle irrigation and ultrasonic activation. The second group received treatment with the GWS. Following treatment, patients used a numeric rating scale to record their pain level at 6, 24, 72, and 168 hours. RESULTS In the standard treatment group, 72.2% of patients experienced at least 1 occurrence of postoperative pain, whereas in the GWS group, 83.3% of patients experienced at least 1 occurrence of postoperative pain. The highest pain intensity level for both treatments occurred at the 6-hour posttreatment time point. All pain decreased with time after the 6-hour posttreatment time point (P < 1.237e-7). CONCLUSIONS There was no significant difference in the incidence or intensity of postoperative pain after either treatment group. However, both groups reported a statistically significant decrease in pain with time.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of SmearOFF solution on smear layer removal by using different irrigation activation techniques. One hundred and twenty mandibular premolars were decoronated, and instrumented with Reciproc up to size 50. Then, the specimens were divided into 6 groups according to the final irrigation activation technique: Group 1: SmearOFF + Conventional syringe irrigation (CSI); Group 2: SmearOFF + Sonic activation (SA); Group 3: SmearOFF + Passive ultrasonic activation (PUA); Group 4:17% EDTA + CSI; Group 5:17% EDTA + SA, and Group 6:17% EDTA + PUA. Teeth were split longitudinally, and specimens were observed under scanning electron microscope. Images were taken from the coronal, middle, and apical thirds of the teeth with 1,000× magnification and analyzed using ImageJ program to calculate total open dentinal tubule areas. Three-way ANOVA test was applied to reveal any significant differences among solutions, activation techniques and root thirds. There was no statistically significant difference among the groups in terms of irrigation solutions (p > .05). There was a statistically significant difference between PUA and CSI groups (p < .05). However, no significant difference was observed between PUA and SA, or between SA and CSI (p > .05). All experimental procedures were most effective in the middle region of the root, followed by cervical and apical thirds (p < .05). PUA showed higher efficacy in smear layer removal compared with CSI. SmearOFF and 17% EDTA showed similar results. The best results in removing smear layer were obtained in the middle region of the root.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the outcome of in vitro studies comparing the effectiveness of QMix irrigant in removing the smear layer in the root canal system compared with other irrigants. Materials and Methods The research question was developed by using Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome and Study design framework. Literature search was performed using 3 electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, and EBSCOhost until October 2019. Two reviewers were independently involved in the selection of the articles and data extraction process. Risk of bias of the studies was independently appraised using revised Cochrane Risk of Bias tool (RoB 2.0) based on 5 domains. Results Thirteen studies fulfilled the selection criteria. The overall risk of bias was moderate. QMix was found to have better smear layer removal ability than mixture of tetracycline isonomer, an acid and a detergent (MTAD), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and phytic acid. The efficacy was less effective than 7% maleic acid and 10% citric acid. No conclusive results could be drawn between QMix and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid due to conflicting results. QMix was more effective when used for 3 minutes than 1 minute. Conclusions QMix has better smear layer removal ability compared to MTAD, NaOCl, Tubulicid Plus, and Phytic acid. In order to remove the smear layer more effectively with QMix, it is recommended to use it for a longer duration.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyse changes in radicular dentine composition after different irrigation regimes using attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Dentine slices from human single-root teeth were immersed in: (i) 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for 1, 5 and 20 min; (ii) 17% EDTA for 1 min; and (iii) 5.25% NaOCl for 20 min, and 17% EDTA and 5.25% NaOCl, both for 1 min. Carbonate/mineral, Amide I/mineral and Amide III/CH2 ratios were determined using ATR-FTIR before and after immersion in the irrigation solutions tested. Results showed that 5.25% NaOCl significantly decreased carbonate/mineral, Amide I/mineral and Amide III/CH2 ratios (P < 0.05). Application of 17% EDTA produced no change in carbonate/mineral ratio (P = 0.120), while an increase in Amide I/mineral in apical third (P = 0.002) and Amide III/CH2 (P < 0.001) was observed. The combination of NaOCl, EDTA and NaOCl increased carbonate/mineral ratio in coronal third (P = 0.037), and Amide I/mineral (P = 0.003) and Amide III/CH2 (P = 0.001) ratios. In conclusion, irrigation solutions tested significantly affected radicular dentine composition.

Abstract
This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of a novel silver-citrate root canal irrigation solution (BioAKT) on smear layer removal, sealer penetration after root canal instrumentation and antibacterial activity. Single-root teeth were endodontically treated, sealed with an epoxi-amine resin sealer and irrigated using: Group I: 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); Group II: silver-citrate solution (BioAKT); Group III: phosphate buffer solution (PBS); Group IV: 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Smear layer removal and silver deposition at the coronal, middle and apical portion of each canal were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Sealer penetration into dentinal tubules at coronal, middle and apical portion was assessed through dye-assisted confocal microscopy (CSM). Both SEM and CSM micrographs were evaluated by two examiners (κ = 0.86), who were blind to the irrigation regimens; scores were given according to the degree of penetration of the sealer. Data analysis included Pearson’s x2 and Sidak’s multiple comparisons. Dentin discs were polished and sterilized. Enterococcus faecalis biofilms were grown using a continuous-flow bioreactor under anaerobic conditions for 72 h. Specimens were irrigated with the tested solutions, and bacterial viability was assessed using a tetrazolium salt assay (MTT). Statistical analysis included one-way ANOVA and Student’s post-hoc t-test (p < 0.05). BioAKT and EDTA were the most efficient solutions both in removing the smear layer and allowing sealer penetration. However, at the apical portion BioAKT performed significantly better compared to EDTA both in smear layer removal and sealer penetration (p < 0.05). BioAKT and NaOCl showed comparable antibacterial effect (p = 0.53). In conclusion, BioAKT represents a suitable smear layer removal agent, which allows for reliable sealer penetration at the apical portion of the root canal system and offers significant antibacterial properties.

Abstract
AIM To compare the shear bond strengths of a calcium silicate-based root canal sealer (CSS), to dentin or calcium silicate-impregnated gutta-percha (CSGP), with the shear bond strengths of an epoxy resin-based sealer. METHODS For sealer/dentin testing, 40 hemisectioned roots were divided into 2 groups. Coronal root dentin discs were bonded with CSS or epoxy resin-based sealer. For sealer/core material testing, CSGP and conventional gutta-percha discs were bonded with a matching sealer (N = 20 per group). The shear bond strengths were tested using a universal testing machine. The failed modes were analyzed using stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS The CSS sealer had significantly higher shear bond strength to dentin than did epoxy resin-based sealer (P < .01). However, shear bond strengths of the 2 sealers to core materials did not significantly differ (P = .74). The remnants of the CSS sealer adhering to dentin or calcium silicate gutta-percha disc were observed. CONCLUSIONS The CSS sealer had better adhesion to dentin than did epoxy resin-based sealer. However, the bond of the CSS sealer to impregnated gutta-percha was not superior to the epoxy resin-based sealer bonded to conventional gutta-percha.

Abstract
This study evaluated the influence of canal irrigation protocols with 5.25% calcium hypochlorite [Ca(OCl)2 ], 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 17% EDTA solution on the inorganic component of root canal dentin. Sixty roots were randomly divided into six groups (n = 10): Saline solution (SS) (control); Saline solution (SSE) +17% EDTA; CH - 5.25% Ca(OCl)2 ; CHE - 5.25% Ca(OCl)2 + 17% EDTA; SH - 5.25% NaOCl; SHE - 5.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA. After canal irrigation, the specimens were longitudinally split and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Dentinal tubules were observed in transverse (middle and apical thirds) direction. The images were classified in scores, according to smear layer removal and peritubular dentin alteration, and data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis's test, followed by Dunn's test (α = 0.05). In the middle third, all groups with EDTA presented better removal of the smear layer with higher peritubular dentin alteration (p < .05). In the apical third, this happened only in SHE (p < .05). Ca(OCl)2 and NaOCl exhibit similar performance to remove smear layer and alteration of the inorganic component in the middle third. In the apical third, NaOCl associated with EDTA showed better performance in smear layer removal.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of several decalcifying agents used as irrigant solutions in endodontic treatment on collagen and mineral components of dentin. Coronal dentin discs from five caries-free human third molars with a smear layer were treated for one minute with a chelating solution (1% Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), 10% EDTA, 17% EDTA, 10% citric acid). Mineralization degree (Ca/N and P/N atomic ratios, IR Iapatite/Iamide II and I1410(carbonate)/I554(phosphate) spectroscopic ratios) and possible collagen rearrangements (collagen infrared (IR) amide II e III shifts) were evaluated by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM)/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and IR spectroscopy before and after treatment (T0) and after ageing (T24h and T2m) in simulated body fluid (SBF). At T0, analysis showed that the highest demineralizing effect was achieved using a 10% citric acid solution and 10% EDTA, while the smallest effect was observed when using 17% EDTA. No significant collagen modifications were detected upon treatment with 1% EDTA, while subtle changes were observed after the other treatments. At T24h or T2m, analyses showed the highest remineralization values for 1% EDTA and the lowest for 10% citric acid, mainly at T2m. The samples treated with 17% EDTA showed slight collagen rearrangements upon remineralization. In conclusion, the highest demineralizing effect was observed for 10% EDTA and 10% citric acid. Collagen rearrangement was found for all the treatments except for 1% EDTA. The highest remineralization capability in SBF values was recorded for 1% EDTA and the lowest for 10% citric acid. A slight collagen rearrangement upon remineralization was still present in 17% EDTA-treated samples. Clinical use as a chelating agent in the endodontic therapy of citric acid and concentrated EDTA solutions should be reconsidered.

Abstract
Background Effective removal of smear layer ensures better penetration of irrigants ensuring root canal disinfection and has the potential of sealing dentinal tubules during obturation. Aim The aim of this study is to evaluate the canal cleaning efficacy and calcium ion liberation with the use of demineralizing irrigants, namely, 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), 7% maleic acid, and 10% citric acid with or without ultrasonic (US) activation. Materials and Methods Crowns of 62 extracted maxillary central incisors were decoronated and root canals prepared. Based on the final irrigant teeth were divided into following groups (n = 10), namely, 10% citric acid, 7% maleic acid, 17% EDTA, and 10% citric acid with US activation, 7% maleic acid with US activation, and 17% EDTA with US activation. Irrigants were subjected to inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy followed by debris scoring and scanning electron microscope analysis. Statistical Analysis One-way analysis of variance with the Bonferroni's correction for multiple testing was employed. Results About 10% citric acid with US activation liberated the highest calcium ions and removed the maximum smear layer. Conclusions Citric acid with US activation is a potentially effective irrigation regimen with sodium hypochlorite.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study is to evaluate electrolyzed saline, produced from a custom-made chair side apparatus for its cleaning effect on root canal walls. Methods A chair side apparatus has been designed to produce and dispense electrolytically activated solutions (Electrolyzed saline) for the purpose of root canal irrigation. Two different solutions, one, which is oxidizing in nature, consisting primarily of Chlorine derivatives and another, reducing in nature, consisting primarily of sodium hydroxide, are obtained. A combination of these two solutions was used for root canal irrigation in extracted teeth. Root canals were split and the samples were subjected to Scanning electron microscopic evaluation. Results Under the conditions of this study, electrolyzed saline significantly cleaned the root canal surfaces well, opening the dentinal tubules and removing the smear layer. Significance There has been a constant search for the ideal root canal irrigant. Sodium hypochlorite has been vastly used but its toxicity and storage risks are of concern. Electrolyzed saline has been produced from saline and the apparatus prepares and dispenses the solution chair side, obviating storage needs.

Abstract
Introduction: Laser irradiation of dentin surface can affect its surface topography and roughness. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is among the most efficient tools for determination of surface topography of natural biomolecules in nano-scales. Surface roughness affects plaque retention especially in the cervical region. This study aimed to assess and compare the obstruction of dentinal tubules and dentin surface roughness after irradiation of erbium: yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG ) and CO2 lasers for treatment of dentin hypersensitivity (DH). Methods: Five disc-shaped samples measuring 3 mm in thickness were fabricated by horizontal sectioning of the cervical area of five extracted human molars using a low speed saw. Each disc was divided into 3 segments by a bur under water coolant. The three segments of each disc were placed on a glass slide. First segment: No intervention (control group). Second segment: Er:YAG laser irradiation (2940 nm, 50 mJ, 10 Hz and 0.5 W, 30 seconds) along with water coolant. Third segment: CO2 laser irradiation (10600 nm, 80 Hz, 0.3 W, 30 seconds) along with water coolant. After that, the surfaces underwent non-contact AFM. The diameters of dentinal tubules as well as surface roughness were then measured and statistically analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA. Results: The surface roughness parameters (Ra, Rq) showed increased roughness after laser irradiation and this increase in roughness after Er:YAG laser application was significant compared to the control group (P=0.048). However, CO2 laser caused no significant change in surface roughness. Also, after Er:YAG laser application, fewer open dentinal tubules were observed and the remaining open tubules had a smaller diameter. Conclusion: Based on the results, Er:YAG laser irradiation obstructs the dentinal tubules and increases the dentin surface roughness. This increase in surface roughness can cause microbial plaque retention and increase the risk of caries and periodontal disease. Application of CO2 laser (compared to Er:YAG) lead to slight but clinically significant obstruction of dentinal tubules and surface roughness.
