Abstract
The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the number of children of older adults in China and their cognitive function. A total of 15862 older adults were included in the 2017-2018 China Health and Longevity Longitudinal Survey(CLHLS), and were explored using Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) and restricted cubic splines(RCS). Research has found that social participation and psychological resilience have a moderating effect on the impact of child numbers on cognitive function, with a greater impact observed in female participants. RCS shows a U-shaped relationship between the number of children and poorer cognitive outcomes, but low fertility rates are only associated with poorer cognitive function in women. Cognitive function decreases with decreasing social participation and psychological resilience. To combat cognitive decline in older adults with multiple children, it is imperative to take into account the societal and psychological impacts and to integrate a suite of complementary intervention strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Education is a well-established predictor for late-life cognition. Moreover, social participation is associated with late-life cognition and could mediate the association between education and cognitive function. Yet, few studies have formally tested this question within a causal mediation framework. METHODS We used data from the Taiwan Longitudinal Study in Aging. Participants were aged 50 or above and recruited in 1989 (n = 4,400), stratified by age group (aged 50-64 years versus 65 or above). We used sequence analysis and optimal matching techniques to define clustered patterns of social participation and work trajectories. We then used a four-way decomposition to identify causal mediation of the association between educational attainment and cognitive function by social participation. Cognitive function was measured by the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire. RESULTS The mediating pathway through social participation accounted for 5% or less of the total relation of education on late-life cognitive function for both younger and older subgroups. The interaction between education and social participation accounted for 22% (middle/high school) and 34% (college+) of the total effect, contrasting with no formal education. We estimated that 36% (95% C.I. = 0.09, 0.69) of the educational disparity in late-life cognition among the younger cohort could be eliminated if the least educated group's social participation matched that of the college or above group. Social participation was not a significant mediator in the older subgroup. CONCLUSION To mitigate educational disparities in late-life cognitive function, further exploration of encouraging more active social participation or stable employment should be undertaken.

Abstract
BackgroundLeisure activity and sleep time are key factors in cognitive impairment, but the impact of their long-term trajectories on incident cognitive impairment remains unclear.ObjectiveTo examine the association of leisure activity trajectories, sleep time trajectories and their combined effects with incident cognitive impairment in older adults.MethodsData from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2008-2018) were analyzed, including adults aged ≥65 who participated in at least three surveys. Group-based trajectory modeling explored leisure activity and sleep time patterns. Cox proportional-hazards regression model assessed the association of leisure activity trajectories and sleep time trajectories and their combined effects with incident cognitive impairment.ResultsWe included 3094 participants with a median follow-up of 6.07 years. The optimal trajectory groups for leisure activity and sleep time were four and three, respectively. The low-level leisure activity group were associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment (HR, 95%CI: 2.07, 1.37-3.13), whereas the high-level leisure activity group were associated with a reduced risk of cognitive impairment (HR, 95%CI: 0.60, 0.36-0.99). Short sleep time group was associated with a reduced risk of cognitive impairment (HR, 95%CI: 0.62, 0.41-0.92). In the combined effect, leisure activity belonging to the low-level group and sleep time belonging to the moderate sleep time group or the long sleep time group were associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment.ConclusionsLong-term high-level leisure activity and short sleep time are associated with a reduced risk of cognitive impairment in older adults.

Abstract
Cognitive decline poses a significant challenge for the elderly population globally. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of cognitive function and its associated factors among the elderly in the Indonesian family life survey's fifth wave (IFLS-5) conducted from 2014 to 2015. The study included elderly individuals aged 60 and above, excluding proxy respondents and those with missing data. Various socio-demographic, cognitive function and health-related variables were analyzed, including age, sex, education level, marital status, residence, region, economic status, current employment, self-rated health status, happiness, sleep quality, depression, loneliness, and chronic conditions. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with cognitive functions among the 2,929 elderly respondents. The results revealed that 44.6% of the respondents reported poor cognitive function. In the unadjusted model, residence (OR: 0.81; 95%CI: 0.70-0.94), region of other islands (OR: 0.66; 95%CI: 0.54-0.81), sleep quality (OR: 0.53; 95%CI: 0.42-0.68), self-rated health status (OR: 1.38; 95%CI: 1.19-1.61), happiness (OR: 1.48; 95%CI: 1.22-1.79), and depression (OR: 1.22; 95%CI: 1.04-1.44) showed significant associations with cognitive function. After adjusting for confounding factors, the association remained significant for residence (OR: 0.77; 95%CI: 0.66-0.89), regions other than Java, Bali, and Sumatra (OR: 0.61; 95%CI: 0.50-0.76), self-rated health (OR: 1.28; 95%CI: 1.09-1.51), happiness (OR: 1.30; 95%CI: 1.06-1.59), and sleep quality (OR: 0.60; 95%CI: 0.47-0.78). These findings emphasize the necessity of interventions aimed at enhancing sleep quality and overall health in order to preserve cognitive function among the elderly, thus potentially improving their quality of life. Implementing comprehensive health programs could significantly enhance the overall quality of life for the aging population, especially the elderly population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to examine the association between the American Heart Association's (AHA) newly revised Life's Essential 8 (LE8) algorithm, designed for assessing cardiovascular health (CVH), and cognitive impairment among older adults in the United States. METHODS This study employed a cross-sectional design, utilizing data from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to explore the relationship between CVH and cognitive impairment in older adults. CVH scores are assessed based on the AHA definition of the LE8, categorized into three tiers: low (0-49), medium (50-79), and high (80-100). Cognitive impairment is evaluated using three distinct scoring systems: the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD), the Animal Fluency Test (AFT), and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). The lowest quartile as the cut-off point; below or equal to the lower quartile was considered as low cognitive population, and above the lower quartile was normal population. To analyze the association, multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were employed. RESULTS A significant negative correlation exists between the LE8 and cognitive impairment. After adjusting for multiple variables, the odds ratios (OR) for cognitive impairment, as measured by the CERAD, AFT, and DSST, were compared between patients with high and low CVH. The results indicated OR values of 0.60 (95% CI: 0.36-0.98), 0.72 (95% CI: 0.52-0.97), and 0.29 (95% CI: 0.16-0.53) for the CERAD, AFT, and DSST, respectively. Additionally, the RCS curve demonstrated a significant linear relationship between lifestyle factors encapsulated by the LE8 and cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate higher adherence to LE8 was associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment. Furthermore, maintaining optimal CVH is crucial in preventing cognitive impairment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Malnutrition and nutritional risk are risk factors for many adverse health outcomes in older adults, but they have rarely been assessed in China. The aim of this study was to evaluate the availability of Elderly Nutritional Indicators for Geriatric Malnutrition Assessment (ENIGMA), a nutritional scale originally developed to predict mortality, in assessing nutritional risks and predicting adverse health outcomes in Chinese community-dwelling older adults. METHODS This was a population-based longitudinal cohort study (Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey), with a 4-y follow-up of 2063 community-dwelling adults aged 65 y or older. Nutritional risks were assessed via the use of ENIGMA and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) at baseline (the 2014 wave). Cognitive impairment, functional limitation, and frailty were evaluated using the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living/Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale, and Frailty Index, respectively, at baseline and 4-y follow-up (the 2018 wave). Mortality was measured by survival status and duration of exposure to death from baseline to follow-up. The associations of nutritional risks with prevalent/incident cognitive impairment, functional limitation and frailty, and 4-y mortality were estimated using logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression models, adjusting for confounders. The discriminatory accuracy of ENIGMA and GNRI for these adverse health outcomes were compared by receiver operating characteristic analyses. RESULTS According to ENIGMA, 48.6% of the Chinese community-dwelling older adults (age: 86.5±11.3 y) showed moderate and high nutritional risk. Nutritional risks defined by the ENIGMA were significantly associated with increased prevalence and incidence of cognitive impairment, functional limitation, and frailty (odds ratio ranging from 1.79 to 89.6, values ranging from P < 0.001 to 0.048) but were mostly insignificant for that defined by GNRI. With respect to 4-y mortality, nutritional risks as defined by GNRI showed better prediction effects than those defined by ENIGMA. Receiver operating characteristic analyses indicated that nutritional risks defined by ENIGMA had better discriminatory accuracy than those defined by GNRI for prevalent and incident cognitive impairment (C = 0.73 vs 0.64, P < 0.001; C = 0.65 vs 0.59, P = 0.015, respectively), functional limitation (C = 0.74 vs 0.63, P < 0.001 at baseline; C = 0.61 vs 0.56, P = 0.016 at follow-up), frailty (C = 0.85 vs 0.67, P < 0.001 at baseline; C = 0.64 vs 0.55, P < 0.001 at follow-up), and even 4-y mortality (C = 0.68 vs 0.64, P = 0.020). CONCLUSIONS ENIGMA could serve as a nutritional risk screening tool that has a robust role in predicting cognitive impairment, functional limitation, and frailty in Chinese community-dwelling older adults. It may be recommended for early nutritional risk screening and has the potential to guide early nutritional intervention in communities and primary care settings in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a valuable tool for detecting cognitive impairment, widely used in many countries. However, there is still a lack of large sample normative data and whose cut-off values for detecting cognitive impairment is considerable controversy. METHODS The assessment conducted in this study utilizes the MoCA scale, specifically employing the Mandarin-8.1 version. This study recruited a total of 3,097 healthy adults aged over 20 years. We performed multiple linear regression analysis, incorporating age, gender, and education level as predictor variables, to examine their associations with the MoCA total score and subdomain scores. Subsequently, we established normative values stratified by age and education level. Finally, we included 242 patients with vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) and 137 controls with normal cognition, and determined the optimal cut-off value of VCI through ROC curves. RESULTS The participants in this study exhibit a balanced gender distribution, with an average age of 54.46 years (SD = 14.38) and an average education period of 9.49 years (SD = 4.61). The study population demonstrates an average MoCA score of 23.25 points (SD = 4.82). The multiple linear regression analysis indicates that MoCA total score is influenced by age and education level, collectively accounting for 46.8% of the total variance. Higher age and lower education level are correlated with lower MoCA total scores. A score of 22 is the optimal cut-off value for diagnosing vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). CONCLUSION This study offered normative MoCA values specific to the Chinese adults. Furthermore, this study indicated that a score of 26 may not represent the most optimal cut-off value for VCI. And for detecting VCI, a score of 22 may be a better cut-off value.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A common belief among people and some researchers is that keeping yourself mentally active may decrease the risk of dementia. Over the past years, despite widespread efforts to identify proxies for protecting cognitive reserve against age-related changes, it is still not clear what type of intellectual activity would be beneficial for cognitive reserve. To fill this gap, we propose a three-dimensional model of intellectual activity. According to this conceptual model, intellectual activities could be distinguished based on their locations in a three-dimensions space, including; (1) Activation: active vs. passive, (2) Novelty: novel vs. familiar, and (3) Productivity: productive vs. receptive. We assumed that the activities that are categorized as more active, novel, and productive could be considered as a cognitive reserve proxy. METHODS To test this hypothesis, a sample of 237 participants older than 50 years (Mage = 58.76 ± 6.66; 63.7% women) was recruited to take part in the study. Episodic, semantic and working memory were assessed with computerized battery tests (Sepidar) and a self-report questionnaire was used to assess intellectual activities. Activities were categorized in terms of; (1) passive, familiar, and receptive activities (radio/watching TV), (2) active, familiar, and receptive activities (solving crosswords), (3) active, novel, and receptive activities (reading), and (4) active, novel, and productive activities (writing). RESULTS The results indicated that writing moderates the effect of age on episodic and semantic memory. Reading only moderates the effect of age on semantic memory, and radio/watching TV and solving crosswords do not play a role in moderation analysis. CONCLUSIONS Our finding suggests that intellectual activities have different moderating effects on the relationships between age and memory performance. Individuals with high levels of participation in novel and productive activities over the life course are less likely to clinically demonstrate cognitive impairments. Our results support the potential benefit of the three-dimensional model to provide a better insight into the complex role of intellectual activities in cognitive reserve, particularly for older adults. Further research is needed to evaluate the efficacy and the benefits of the model.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Active engagement in leisure activities has positive effects on individuals' health outcomes and social functioning; however, there is limited understanding of the link between participation in leisure activities, particularly non-exercise activities, and falls in older adults. This study aimed to determine the relationship between participation in leisure activities and the incidence of falls, and the variation of this relationship by dementia status in residential aged care facilities (RACFs). METHODS A retrospective longitudinal cohort study utilising routinely collected data (January 2021-August 2022) from 25 RACFs in Sydney, Australia, was conducted. The cohort included 3,024 older permanent residents (1,493 with dementia and 1,531 without) aged ≥65 and with a stay of ≥1 week. The level of participation in leisure activities was measured using the number of leisure activities per 1,000 resident days and divided into quartiles. Outcome measures were the incidence rate of all falls and injurious falls (i.e., number of falls per 1,000 resident days). We used multilevel negative binary regression to examine the relationship between leisure participation and fall incidence. RESULTS For the whole sample, leisure participation was significantly inversely associated with the incidence rate of all falls and injurious falls. For example, residents in the high leisure participation group were 26% less likely to experience a fall compared to those in the low leisure participation group after controlling for confounders (incidence rate ratio = 0.74, 95% confidence interval = 0.60, 0.91). Such inverse relationship was observed in both exercise and non-exercise activities and was stronger among residents without dementia. CONCLUSIONS Leisure participation is associated with a lower rate of falls, a key quality indicator by which RACFs are benchmarked and funded in Australia and many other countries. More recognition and attention are needed for the currently underfunded leisure activities in RACFs in future funding arrangement.

Abstract
Background This study delves into the complex interaction between leisure activities and cognitive function in older people with disabilities, with a particular emphasis on the moderating influence of depression. Despite the well-documented cognitive benefits of leisure activities among the older people, the intricate relationship between depression and the association between leisure activities and cognitive function in this specific demographic has been rarely reported. Methods Drawing on data from the 2017-2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), this study meticulously examined a cohort of 713 participants aged 65-89 years. We constructed a moderation model to examine the impact of leisure activity on cognitive function in older people with disabilities, with depression levels as a moderating variable. Results We found a positive association between engagement in leisure activities and cognitive function, highlighting the potential cognitive advantages associated with leisure engagement among disabled older people. However, the present analysis also reveals a significant moderation effect of depression on this relationship, shedding light on the nuanced nature of this association. Specifically, elevated levels of depression emerge as a critical moderator, attenuating the otherwise favorable impact of leisure activities on cognitive function among older people contending with disabilities. Conclusion In conclusion, the findings provide a compelling rationale for tailored interventions that comprehensively target both leisure activity engagement and concurrent depression management, effectively fostering improvements in cognitive function among the cohort of disabled older people.

Abstract
Work and activity could be an important source of cognitive enrichment. Activities that are more challenging concerning the cognitive functions that are put into practice are associated with lower risk of cognitive decline in old age. Objective The present study aimed to assess the impact of occupational complexity and household tasks in three cognitive domains (verbal episodic memory, language, and executive functions) in older adults residing within the community. Methods A trail analysis was executed, using the structural equations procedure in 120 participants assessed with main lifetime occupational activity and household tasks questionnaire, as well as a neuropsychological assessment battery for memory, language, and executive functions. Results The regression weights analysis indicated that complexity in household chores showed moderate effects on executive functions (β=0.19; p=0.027) and that occupational complexity of paid work showed effects on memory (β=0.26; p=0.008), language (β=0.38; p<0.001), and executive functions (β=0.55; p<0.001). Conclusion Paid work promotes cognitive reserve, contrary to household activities which seem to have a moderate impact on cognition. Differences in activity complexity not only impact people´s economic and social status and possibilities but can also determine different courses of aging and cognitive risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthy diets and physical exercise, two modifiable lifestyle factors, are protective against depression in older adults. This study aimed to investigate whether physical exercise may influence the associations of dietary habits with depression in Chinese community-dwelling older adults. METHODS In the 2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, 12,708 community-dwelling older adults aged ≥65 years were included for analyses. Older adults' dietary habits (including daily intake of food components such as fruits, vegetables, animal oil, and so on) and physical exercise were assessed. Depression was evaluated via the 10 item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D-10) scale. The influences of physical exercise on the associations of dietary habits with depression were estimated using logistic regression models adjusted for confounders. RESULTS Older adults who took physical exercise had a significantly decreased probability of depression (adjusted OR = 0.73, p < 0.001). As for dietary habits, the intake of fruits, vegetables, eggs, nut products, mushrooms or algae, and vitamins were inversely associated with the prevalence of depression (adjusted ORs = 0.61-0.81; p-values: from <0.001 to 0.025), while animal oil was positively associated with it (adjusted OR = 1.52, p < 0.001). When stratified by physical exercise, older adults who ate fruits or vegetables had consistent decreased risk of depression, no matter whether they took physical exercise or not (adjusted ORs = 0.52-0.70), while the intake of eggs, nut products, and vitamins were inversely associated, and animal oil was consistently positively associated with depression only in older adults who did not take physical exercise (adjusted ORs = 0.79, 0.68, 0.63, and 1.67, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Physical exercise may conceal the potential protective effects of some healthy dietary habits in terms of depression and counteract the detrimental effects of the unhealthy habits. Some dietary habits may be considered as alternative protective measures for depression in community-dwelling older adults when physical exercise cannot be performed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Studies have shown that good cognitive function can moderate the relationship between non-exercise physical activity (NEPA) and activities of daily living (ADLs) disability to some extent, and this study mainly explores the relationship between ADL and NEPA and cognitive function in Chinese older adults. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Data came from a nationally representative sample of 2471 Chinese old adults (aged 65+) from the 2011, 2014 and 2018 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES A cross-lagged panel model combined with mediation analysis was used to determine the relationship between ADL and NEPA and the mediating effect of cognitive function on the ascertained ADL-NEPA relationship. RESULTS The more frequently people over the age of 65 in China participate in NEPA, the lower the risk of ADL disability. Cognitive function partially mediated this expected relationship, accounting for 9.09% of the total NEPA effect on ADL. CONCLUSION Participating in more NEPA could reduce the risk of ADL disability, and participating in NEPA may reduce the risk of ADL disability through cognitive function to some extent.

Abstract
One dementia prevention strategy that is effective for older adults is frequent participation in leisure time physical activity. However, research gaps exist in our understanding of the longitudinal relationship between different levels of leisure time physical activity participation and the cognitive function of older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Thus, we investigated this relationship using Health and Retirement Study data from 2012 to 2020. Results from Repeated Measures Multivariate Analysis of Covariance indicated that both the mid (Mean Difference = -0.45) and high level (Mean Difference = -0.82) leisure time physical activity groups showed higher levels of memory function compared to the low-level leisure time physical activity group. Additionally, the mid (Mean Difference = -0.21) and high level (Mean Difference = -0.37) leisure time physical activity groups reported better working memory function, and the mid (Mean Difference = -0.02) and high level (Mean Difference = -0.02) leisure time physical activity groups showed higher levels of attention and processing speed than the low-level leisure time physical activity group. These findings suggest that older adults with mild cognitive impairment who engage either vigorously or moderately in leisure time physical activity (more than three times a week) experience improvements in cognitive function compared to those who do not. This study provides valuable insights for clinicians on the optimal level of leisure time physical activity required to mitigate cognitive decline in older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Objective: This study examined the relationship between cognitive reserve measured with the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire (CRIq) and cognitive and functional outcomes in a chronic traumatic brain injury (TBI) cohort compared to a non-TBI cohort. The utility of the CRIq was compared to common proxies of cognitive reserve (premorbid IQ and years of education) in TBI and non-TBI cohorts. Method: Participants were 105 individuals with moderate-severe TBI (10-33 years post injury) and 91 participants without TBI. Cognitive outcome was examined across four cognitive factors; verbal memory, visual ability and memory, executive attention, and episodic memory. Functional outcome was measured using the Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended. The CRIq total score and three subscale scores (education, work, leisure) were examined. Results: In the TBI cohort, associations were identified between two CRIq subscales and cognitive factors (CRIq education and verbal memory; CRIq work and executive attention). There were no associations between CRIq leisure and cognitive outcomes, or between CRIq and functional outcome. Model selection statistics suggested premorbid IQ and years of education provided a better fit than the CRIq for the relationship between cognitive reserve with two cognitive factors and functional outcome, with neither model providing an improved fit for the remaining two cognitive factors. This finding was broadly consistent in the non-TBI cohort. Conclusion: Cognitive reserve contributes significantly to long-term clinical outcomes following moderate-severe TBI. The relationship between cognitive reserve and long-term cognitive and functional outcomes following TBI is best characterised with traditional proxies of cognitive reserve, mainly premorbid IQ, rather than the CRIq.

Abstract
Oldest-old is the fastest growing segment of society. A substantial number of these individuals are cognitively impaired or demented. Given the lack of a cure, attention is directed to lifestyle interventions that could help alleviate the stress in patients, their families, and society. The aim of this review was to identify lifestyle factors with important roles in dementia prevention in oldest-old. Searches were conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science. We identified 27 observational cohort studies that met the inclusion criteria. Results showed that eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, and participation in leisure and physical activities may protect against cognitive decline and cognitive impairment among oldest-old regardless of the APOE genotype. Combined lifestyles may generate multiplicative effects than individual factors. This is the first review known to systematically examine the association between lifestyle and cognitive health in oldest-old. Lifestyle interventions for diet, leisure, or a combination of lifestyles could be beneficial for cognitive function in oldest-old. Interventional studies are warranted to strengthen the evidence.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Current randomized trial evidence on the effect of physical activity (PA) intervention on cognitive function is scarce and mainly found in well-educated populations, limiting its generalizability. Furthermore, the modification effect of education levels remains understudied. We conducted a cluster randomized trial to evaluate the effects of PA intervention on cognitive function in a general older population, and whether education modifies such effects. METHODS Eight villages were randomized to the intervention (four villages, n = 240) or the control (four villages, n = 271). The intervention group received an 8-week multilevel PA intervention based on a socio-ecological model, while the control did not. The intervention has been condensed to three levels with activities occurring at the individual (telephone counseling, printed material, and training sessions), interpersonal (peer group), and community levels (group sharing and coaching). The primary outcome was changes in global cognition (overall cognitive function) measured by the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS-10) at 12-month follow-up. Repeated measurements were modeled using the linear mixed model, which assumed that the missing values were missing at random. RESULTS The mean age was 70.94 years (standard deviation 5.71) and 55.6% were women. Compared to the control, the orientation improved from baseline at 12-month follow-up (0.24 points [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.03 to 0.46 points; P = 0.03]). Stratified analysis showed that the global cognition and orientation improved at 12-month follow-up among illiterate participants in the intervention (for global cognition, mean difference, 0.57 points [95% CI, 0.03 to 1.10], P = 0.04; for orientation, mean difference, 0.31 points [95% CI, 0.04 to 0.58], P = 0.03). DISCUSSION These results confirm the improvements in orientation in older adults, as well as in global cognition and orientation in the illiterate at 12-month follow-up.

Abstract
Objectives: We analyzed the directional effect of perceived control and control strategies on subjective well-being in middle-aged and elderly people with historical data, and to provide data support for the intervention of well-being in the later years of the elderly group, so as to help them age successfully.Methods: Using data from the CLHLS between 2005 and 2014, we collected demographic and social data of the same elderly population over the decade. We also gathered information on changes in well-being, perceived control, and the use of control strategies. To analyze the longitudinal relationship between subjective well-being and perceived control, including the impact of control strategies on subjective well-being, we used a multilevel growth model with MPLUS. Results: We found that subjective well-being and perceived control were not affected by time. However, changes in perceived control in older adults could predict their level of subjective well-being. Those with higher initial levels of perceived control experienced greater increases in subjective well-being. Additionally, the use of control strategies had a significant influence on changes in subjective well-being, explaining 70.5% of the variance. Conclusion: Combined use of multiple control strategies is a feasible way to improve subjective well-being in later life.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to analyze the status quo and associated factors of care recipients' perceptions of caregivers' willingness to provide care among disabled older adults in China. Thus, this study contributes to our understanding of vulnerable older populations who are at a high risk of receiving support from informal caregivers who are unable or unwilling to take the caregiver role. Methods We analyzed the cross-sectional data of 3,539 disabled older adults who received informal care at home from the seventh wave of the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the variables associated with the respondents' perceived caregivers' willingness to care from five aspects: respondents' sociodemographic attributes, health-related data, family endowment, access to health care services and community-based long-term care services (CBLTCS). Results This study found that the majority of disabled older adults (90.9%) had a positive attitude toward their caregivers' willingness to care and the care they received; however, 7.0% of the adults were concerned about their caregivers' ability to handle the care. Moreover, there was a small number of disabled older people (2.1%) who felt that their caregivers were reluctant to care or lacked patience. The results from the multiple logistic regression showed that disabled older adults with socioeconomic disadvantages (living in rural areas, being poor and with no children who frequently visited) or high demand (with severe disabilities or cognitive impairment) were more likely to consider that their caregivers needed respite care. Those adults with anxiety symptoms, a lower amount of care time, poor self-rated financial status and poor accessibility to health care services were more likely to report that their caregivers were reluctant to administer care. Conclusion This study found that living in rural areas, being poor, with no children who frequently visited, severe disabilities or CI were positively associated the care recipients' perception that caregivers needed respite care. While anxiety symptoms, a lower amount of care time, poor self-rated financial status and poor accessibility to health care services were significantly associated with care recipients' perception of caregivers' reluctance to care. Our findings highlight the awareness of monitoring informal carers' willingness to care or capability to enact caring tasks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited epidemiological evidence exists regarding the association of social participation and psychological resilience with cognitive health. This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the effects of social participation and psychological resilience on adverse cognitive outcomes among older adults in China. METHODS We used two waves (2011 and 2014) of data from the Chinese Longitudinal Survey of Health and Longevity (CLHLS), and 9765 respondents were eligible for the subsequent screening for the present prospective analysis. The Cox proportional hazards model was utilized to examine the association of social participation and psychological resilience with cognitive impairment, cognitive decline and greater cognitive decline. The restricted cubic spline plots were applied to clarify the dose-response relationships between them. RESULTS Compared to those with low social participation, participants with high social participation had a lower hazard ratio (HR) of 0.72 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.59-0.89) for cognitive impairment, 0.85 (95 % CI: 0.76-0.94) for cognitive decline and 0.78 (95 % CI: 0.67-0.90) for greater cognitive decline. Participants with high psychological resilience had an HR of 0.77 (95 % CI: 0.63-0.95) for cognitive impairment 0.85 (95 % CI: 0.76-0.94) for cognitive decline and 0.85 (95 % CI: 0.73-0.98) for greater cognitive decline compared with those with low psychological resilience. Similar effects were observed for social participation score and psychological resilience score. The dose-response analysis also showed that the risk of adverse cognitive outcomes decreased gradually with increasing social participation scores and psychological resilience scores. Additionally, the multiplicative interaction between social participation and psychological resilience was not significant. LIMITATION All information was collected by self-report, which may lead to biases in the process of information collection. CONCLUSION In this study, social participation and psychological resilience were independently associated with a lower risk of adverse cognitive outcomes, and therefore both need to be considered as broader measures to preserve cognitive health among older Chinese adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether the effects of leisure activities on cognition differ among socioeconomic groups and the effects of changes in the frequency of habitual leisure activities on cognition. METHODS We included 5869 older adults from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2008-2014). Five typical leisure activities were used to calculate the Leisure Activity Index (LAI). The Mini-Mental State Examination was used to assess cognition. Latent class analysis was used to construct the overall socioeconomic status (SES). Cox proportional hazard regression was applied to explore the associations and further stratified the analysis by SES. RESULTS Participants in the highest quartile of LAI had a 50 % lower risk of developing cognitive impairment compared with the lowest quartile of LAI (HR: 0.50, 95 % CI: 0.40-0.62) (Ptrend < 0.01). Compared with participants who participated in leisure activities with increased frequency during the follow-up period, the HR (95 % CIs) of participants with no change in frequency was 3.10 (2.39-4.01), and that of participants with decreased frequency was 2.34 (1.81-3.04). A significant interaction between LAI and SES were found (Pinteraction = 0.02). The association between LAI and cognitive function was more pronounced in participants with high SES (HRQ4 vs Q1: 0.31, 95 % CI: 0.16-0.59) than in participants with low SES (HRQ4 vs Q1: 0.61, 95 % CI: 0.45-0.83). CONCLUSIONS Leisure activities may have significant benefits in preventing cognitive impairment. However, promoting leisure activities alone may not substantially reduce socioeconomic inequalities in cognitive health. Measures addressing the social determinants of cognitive health still need to be further explored.

Abstract
This study established a research model to fully understand the relationship of social engagement, loneliness and cognitive function among Chinese older adults. In the latest wave (2018) of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), a total of 12,852 participants aged 65 years and older were included in the study. Path analysis was performed to examine our hypotheses. The social engagement had a positive relationship with normal cognitive function while loneliness had a negative one, and the standardized regression weights were 0.618 (p < 0.01) and -0.046 (p < 0.01), respectively. Watching TV or listening to the radio had the greatest association with cognitive function, followed by housework, outdoor activities, reading newspapers or books, playing cards or mahjong, and raising domestic animals or pets. Loneliness played a mediating role between social engagement and cognitive function. Social engagement could be considered as one of the interventions to improve older adults' health.

Abstract
Leisure participation in older age has principally been researched from individual-level theoretical perspectives that view leisure as reflecting adaptations to ageing-related losses and change. Recent orientations to later-life leisure participation, such as innovation theory, emphasise positive developmental aspects and uses of older individuals' leisure pursuits, driven by personal agency. Moreover, the potential of later-life leisure activities to contribute to community is conceptualised in social capital theory perspectives that bridge individual- and community-level functions of leisure participation. This paper presents findings from qualitative thematic analysis of oral histories on leisure conducted with 58 persons aged 60 and over in rural south-west England, to examine the personal uses and functions of their leisure occupations in older age, and the role that these activities play in connecting older individuals to their communities. While participants described lifetime patterns of leisure characterised by a core set of activities and interests, later life was a period of leisure transitions in which they actively used new and continuing pastimes to adapt to changing personal circumstances, abilities and aspirations. The findings also demonstrate how participants' leisure activities – ranging from avidly pursued hobbies to formal volunteering – served individual adaptive and developmental purposes, and were a means of fostering social connectivity and contributing to rural community life. Implications of these findings are discussed in regard to leisure theory, policy and practice. This paper adds to the literature on ageing and leisure by identifying the benefits of examining older persons' leisure participation from a combined conceptual perspective that can elucidate its functions at both the micro- and meso-levels of society.

Cognitive stimulation is essential for successful aging. The influence of sex and socio-occupational elements on this area remains unknown. This study aimed to analyze the possible mediation of those elements in the effectiveness of a cognitive stimulation program in primary care. A randomized clinical trial was conducted with 232 adults aged 65 years or older without cognitive impairment. The intervention produced significant cognitive improvements. Women improved independently of social and occupational factors, while men's improvement occurred at a low role level (zero to one), a medium level of interests (two to three), with a medium level of mental occupation (neither high nor low), and with marked personal values. The mediating variables were the intervention group in both sexes and, also in men, a low and medium role level. Therefore, the intervention and roles appear as mediating variables moderated by sex. In conclusion, cognitive stimulation programs should be adapted.

Abstract
Leisure participation is beneficial to various health outcomes. This study examined a comprehensive list of leisure activities in relation to incidence of cognitive impairment among healthy older adults (65+) in China. Using data from the 2002 to 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, we found that most of the leisure activities were protective of cognitive decline and three leisure activities (watching TV, doing housework, and playing cards/mah-jong) stood out as the most important ones. Additionally, our results revealed subgroup variations in the association between leisure participation and cognitive function: Leisure activities such as reading newspapers/books (not significant for the illiterate), gardening (not significant for the illiterate), and regular exercise (not significant for the rural residents) had different effects across different demographic social groups. Our findings suggest that intervention programs designed to prevent cognitive decline for older adults should consider subgroup and cultural variations in order to yield the best outcomes.

Abstract
Objectives The study aimed to identify leisure activity patterns among older adults and explore the differences in the prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) of these patterns. Methods A total of 352 older adults aged ≥ 65 years in Shijiazhuang were enrolled in this study from June to September 2021. Their leisure activities and cognition were evaluated. Latent class analysis and logistic regression models were used for analysis. The manuscript was organized according to the STROBE guidelines. Results We identified three latent classes of leisure activities: multidomain activities (MDA) class (55%), self-improvement activities (SIA) class (21%), and family-centered activities (FCA) class (24%). Three latent classes significantly differed in general characteristics (gender, education, and body mass index) and the prevalence of MCI. The prevalence of MCI was 3.694 times higher in older adults in the FCA class than in older adults in the MDA class (OR = 3.694, P < 0.001) and 2.573 times higher in older adults in the SIA class (OR = 2.573, P = 0.036). Conclusion Patterns of low participation in intellectual activities were associated with MCI. Identifying the heterogeneity in leisure activity engagement in later life was critical for tailoring interventions and designing programs that can improve the cognitive function of older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leisure activities and sleep duration are correlated and have been linked to cognitive function, but most studies have examined only one of these factors. OBJECTIVE To investigate the independent and joint associations of leisure activities and sleep duration with cognitive function among older adults. METHODS We included 7,796 participants aged≥65 years from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey during 2008-2018 (waves 5-8). Self-reported leisure activities and sleep duration were assessed at baseline, and cognitive function was measured repeatedly using the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) at baseline and during follow-up. We used linear mixed models to estimate regression coefficients (β) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS The median follow-up duration was 5.77 years. After adjusting for each other and potential confounders, both lower leisure activity score (each 1-point decrease β= -0.33, 95% CI: -0.36 to -0.30) and longer sleep duration (each 1-hour increase β= -0.17, 95% CI: -0.22 to -0.11) were independently associated with lower MMSE score. Furthermore, we observed an additive interaction between leisure activities and sleep duration (pinteraction < 0.001). A combination of low leisure activity score and long sleep duration was strongly associated with decreased MMSE score (β= -2.51, 95% CI: -2.85 to -2.16) compared with the group with combined high leisure activity score and normal sleep duration. CONCLUSION Both leisure activities and sleep duration were independently associated with cognitive function. Moreover, the combination of leisure inactivity and prolonged sleep duration predicted worse cognitive function (a preclinical hallmark of Alzheimer's disease) in an additive manner.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the association between different forms of sedentary behavior and cognitive function in Chinese community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN A longitudinal study with a 2-year follow-up. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Data from 5356 participants at baseline and 956 participants at the follow-up of the Anhui Healthy Longevity Survey (AHLS) were analysed. MEASUREMENTS Cognitive function was evaluated by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) was classified according to education-specific criteria. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess the sedentary behavior of the participants. RESULTS The participants who reported longer screen-watching sedentary duration had higher MMSE scores (1-2 hours: β=0.758, 95% CI: 0.450, 1.066; > 2 hours: β=1.240, 95% CI: 0.917, 1.562) and lower likelihoods of MCI (1-2 hours: OR= 0.787, 95% CI: 0.677, 0.914; >2 hours: OR=0.617, 95% CI: 0.524, 0.726). The participants who had played cards (or mahjong) sedentary had higher MMSE scores (β= 1.132, 95% CI: 0.788, 1.476) and lower likelihoods of MCI (OR=0.572, 95% CI: 0.476, 0.687). However, the participants who reported longer other forms of sedentary duration had lower MMSE scores (1-2 hours: β=-0.409, 95% CI: -0.735, -0.082; > 2 hours: β=-1.391, 95% CI: -1.696, -1.087) and higher likelihoods of MCI (1-2 hours: OR=1.271, 95% CI: 1.081, 1.496; > 2 hours: OR=1.632, 95% CI: 1.409, 1.889). No significant association was detected between sedentary duration and MCI incidence. CONCLUSION Variations in the impact of diverse sedentary behaviors on the cognitive function were detected in Chinese older adults. However, such associations were cross-sectional and longitudinal associations were not found in the current study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both napping and nighttime sleep duration have been reported to be associated with cognitive function in older adults, whereas little is known about the association between daytime napping and cognitive impairment in different nighttime sleep duration subgroups. This study aimed to explore the correlation between daytime napping and cognitive impairment across nighttime sleep duration subgroups. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted by using the fourth survey of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). We utilized the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scale to define cognitive impairment, and the daytime napping and nighttime sleep duration was self-reported by individuals. We applied the Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) to analysis the dose-response relationships between daytime napping and cognitive impairment. And the multivariate Logistic Regression Model (LRM) was performed to evaluate the association of daytime napping and cognitive impairment. RESULTS A total of 3,052 individuals were included, of which 769 were cognitive impairment. The RCS showed there were non-linear association between daytime napping and cognitive impairment in all participants group and longer nighttime sleep duration subgroup (PNon-linear < 0.05, PDaytime napping < 0.05). The LRM revealed no napping (OR = 1.62, 95%CI 1.14-2.30) and excessive napping (1.64 95%CI 1.09-2.48) were related to cognitive impairment in longer nighttime sleep duration subgroup. CONCLUSIONS Daytime napping had nonlinear association with cognitive impairment in Chinese elderly population. No napping and excessive daytime napping (>90 minutes) were related to cognitive impairment in participants with 7 and more hours nighttime sleep duration.

Abstract
Activity engagement is a modifiable factor that has been widely-cited as being good for the aging brain and cognition and represents a valuable target for reducing dementia risk. However, specific issues about activity engagement (mental, social, and physical) and cognition in older adulthood remain, and Bielak [Gerontology 2010;56: 507-519] reviewed seven major methodological and theoretical questions about this relationship. We present an updated reflection on these key questions, focusing on research published in the last 10 years. For some questions, a significant amount of work has been done and conclusions have become clearer; for others, there have been few additions to the literature and our knowledge remains much the same as it was a decade ago. We review the issues identified in the 2010 paper including the directionality and temporal nature of the relationship; whether specific activity domains offer different benefits to cognition and what domain(s) of cognition are affected; variation in the relation by age, gender, or education; potential mechanisms involved; and how activity engagement is assessed. For each, we present the most up-to-date research, discuss remaining challenges and possible future directions. This formal unifying of the information in the field is intended as a guide to support continued progress by spurring on studies addressing specific questions while reminding researchers of critical issues. We conclude with recommendations that future studies investigating the link between activity engagement and cognitive performance in adulthood should consider.

Abstract
Abnormal cognitive aging in older adults is a growing public health problem. Previous studies showed inconsistent results pertaining to the effects of leisure activities on cognitive function in older adults. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published observational longitudinal studies to examine and synthesize the effects of leisure activities on cognitive function in older adults. MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCO), and Web of Science databases were searched from January 2012 to January 2022. Relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. Most studies found that leisure activities had a positive effect on cognitive function in older adults. The pooled RR for the effect of leisure activity on cognitive function was 0.77 (95% CI: 0.72-0.81, p < 0.01). The effects of leisure activities on cognitive function varied by different cognitive statuses in older adults, with RRs ranging from 0.55 (95% CI: 0.37-0.83) to 1.07 (95% CI: 0.95-1.22). Meta-regression analysis showed that compared with studies with percentage of female ≥50%, studies with female participant percentage <50% had significantly increased RR (p = 0.01). Moreover, studies conducted in European and American countries had significantly lower RR (p = 0.019), compared with those conducted in Asian countries. Our study revealed different effects of various types of leisure activities on different cognitive statuses in older adults. To make innovative recommendations for promoting cognitive function in older adults, more detailed observational longitudinal studies investigating the effects of different types of leisure activities on different cognitive statuses in older adults are needed.

Abstract
Little is known about the role of change in protein intake in affecting cognitive function among older adults. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the associations between the change in protein intake from various food groups and cognitive impairment among older adults in a prospective cohort study. A total of 6951 participants without cognitive impairment or dementia were included in this study. The frequency of protein intake from various food groups was measured by a food frequency questionnaire at baseline and follow-up. Multivariable Cox hazard models with time as the underlying time metric applied to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). During the 37,535 person-years of follow-up, 1202 (17.3%) participants developed cognitive impairment. The improvement in overall protein intake was negatively associated with cognitive impairment with multivariable-adjusted HR of 0.98 (95% CI = 0.97-0.99). Compared with participants with stable change, those with an extreme decline in animal-based protein intake had a 48% higher risk of cognitive impairment. The associations of changes in protein from six food groups with cognitive impairment were in a similar direction to the main result. Protective associations between improving protein intake and a reduced risk of cognitive impairment were observed.

Abstract
Objective The recognition of dementia as a multifactorial disorder encourages the exploration of new pathways to understand its origins. Social health might play a role in cognitive decline and dementia, but conceptual clarity is lacking and this hinders investigation of associations and mechanisms. The objective is to develop a conceptual framework for social health to advance conceptual clarity in future studies. Process We use the following steps: underpinning for concept advancement, concept advancement by the development of a conceptual model, and exploration of its potential feasibility. An iterative consensus-based process was used within the international multidisciplinary SHARED project. Conceptual framework Underpinning of the concept drew from a synthesis of theoretical, conceptual and epidemiological work, and resulted in a definition of social health as wellbeing that relies on capacities both of the individual and the social environment. Consequently, domains in the conceptual framework are on both the individual (e.g., social participation) and the social environmental levels (e.g., social network). We hypothesize that social health acts as a driver for use of cognitive reserve which can then slow cognitive impairment or maintain cognitive functioning. The feasibility of the conceptual framework is demonstrated in its practical use in identifying and structuring of social health markers within the SHARED project. Discussion The conceptual framework provides guidance for future research and facilitates identification of modifiable risk and protective factors, which may in turn shape new avenues for preventive interventions. We highlight the paradigm of social health in dementia as a priority for dementia research.

Abstract
Currently, studies exploring factors associated with the cognition at some time point and no study identifying the trajectories of cognitive changes and factors might associate with the trajectories of cognitive changes in people. This study was to identify factors associated with the trend of cognitive decline in middle-aged and older people. In this cohort study, the data of 6954 subjects were collected from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey database. Group-based trajectory modeling was applied for identifying three different trajectories of cognitive function change [high initial level and slow decline group (n = 1024), moderate initial level and moderate decline group (n = 2673) and low initial level and rapid decline (LRD) group (n = 3277)]. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify variables influencing factors of the trajectories of cognitive function in middle-aged and older people. The follow-up interval was 2 years from 2011 to 2015, and 3 years from 2015 to 2018 via face-to-face interview. High initial level and slow decline group versus LRD group, age (OR = 2.591, 95% CI: 1.962-3.421), gender (OR = 1.398, 95% CI: 1.133-1.725), education (OR = 0.051, 95% CI: 0.039-0.068), place of residence (OR = 2.768, 95% CI: 1.663-4.606), disabled (OR = 1.557, 95% CI: 1.189-2.039), family annual income (OR = 0.757, 95% CI: 0.618-0.929), sleep duration (OR = 1.266, 95% CI: 1.023-1.567), instrumental activity of daily living impairment (OR = 2.513, 95% CI: 1.947-3.245), community activities participation (OR = 0.611, 95% CI: 0.500-0.748), depression (OR = 1.471, 95% CI: 1.185-1.828), and systolic blood pressure (OR = 1.005, 95% CI: 1.001-1.009) were factors influencing the trajectories of cognitive function. Comparing moderate initial level and moderate decline group and LRD group, age (OR = 1.245, 95% CI: 1.052-1.474), gender (OR = 1.244, 95% CI: 1.062-1.458), education (OR = 0.244, 95% CI: 0.190-0.314), marital status (OR = 1.291, 95% CI: 1.079-1.546), place of residence (OR = 1.677, 95% CI: 1.358-2.071), disability (OR = 1.396, 95% CI: 1.180-1.652), smoking (OR = 1.249, 95% CI: 1.071-1.457), family annual income (OR = 0.863, 95% CI: 0.768-0.970), sleep duration (OR = 1.215, 95% CI: 0.973-1.541), instrumental activity of daily living impairment (OR = 1.309, 95% CI: 1.098-1.560), community activities participation (OR = 0.804, 95% CI: 0.718-0.900) and depression (OR = 1.383, 95% CI: 1.217-1.571) were factors associated with the trajectories of cognitive function changes. Middle-aged and older adults who had characteristics associated with increased risk of cognitive decline might be provided with timely interventions.

Abstract
Background Cognitive assessment in acutely hospitalized older adults is mainly limited to neuropsychological screening measures of global cognition. Performance-based assessments of functional cognition better indicate functioning in real-life situations. However, their predictive validity has been less studied in acute hospital settings. The aim of this study was to explore the unique contribution of functional cognition screening during acute illness hospitalization in predicting participation of older adults one and three months after discharge beyond traditional neuropsychological measures. Methods This prospective longitudinal study included 84 older adults ≥ 65 years hospitalized in internal medicine wards due to acute illness, followed by home visits at one month and telephone interviews at three months (n = 77). Participation in instrumental activities of daily living, social and leisure activities was measured by the Activity Card Sort. In-hospital factors included cognitive status (telephone version of the Mini-Mental State Examination, Color Trails Test), functional cognition screening (medication sorting task from the alternative Executive Function Performance Test), emotional status (Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale), functional decline during hospitalization (modified Barthel index), length of hospital stay, the severity of the acute illness, symptoms severity and comorbidities. Results Functional cognition outperformed the neuropsychological measures in predicting participation declines in a sample of relatively high-functioning older adults. According to a hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis, the overall model explained 28.4% of the variance in participation after one month and 19.5% after three months. Age and gender explained 18.6% of the variance after one month and 13.5% after three months. The medication sorting task explained an additional 5.5% of the variance of participation after one month and 5.1% after three months, beyond age and gender. Length of stay and the Color Trails Test were not significant contributors to the change in participation. Conclusions By incorporating functional cognition into acute settings, healthcare professionals would be able to better detect older adults with mild executive dysfunctions who are at risk for participation declines. Early identification of executive dysfunctions can improve continuity of care and planning of tailored post-discharge rehabilitation services, especially for high-functioning older adults, a mostly overlooked population in acute settings. The results support the use of functional cognition screening measure of medication management ability in acute settings.

Abstract
Background: Previous studies have confirmed that both healthy diets and physical exercise have preventive effects with respect to cognitive decline with aging. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the associations of physical exercise with cognitive impairment differ in community-dwelling older adults with different dietary habits. Methods: In the 2008/2009 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, 14,966 community-dwelling older adults (≥65 years) were included for analyses. Dietary habits (including daily intake of fruits, vegetables, tea, meat, fish, eggs, food made from beans, salt-preserved vegetables, sugar, garlic, milk products, nut products, mushroom or algae, vitamins and medicinal plants) and physical exercise were assessed. Cognitive impairment was evaluated using the Chinese version of the MMSE in the 2008/2009 and 2011/2012 waves. The effect modifications of physical exercise on cognitive impairment by dietary habits were estimated using logistic regression models. Results: Older adults who practiced physical exercise exhibited a trend of decreased probability of cognitive impairment at baseline and follow-up (OR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.80–1.06, p = 0.273; OR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.65–1.05, p = 0.123, respectively) compared with those who did not practice physical exercise. When stratified by dietary habits, physical exercise had a protective effect with respect to prevalent cognitive impairment in older adults who ate fruits (OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.58–0.94, p = 0.016), ate food made from beans (OR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.62–0.93, p = 0.007), did not eat sugar (OR = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.68–0.98, p = 0.028) and ate milk products (OR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.57–0.97, p = 0.030); in the longitudinal analyses, physical exercise had a protective effect with respect to incident cognitive impairment in older adults who ate fruits (OR = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.41–0.98, p = 0.040) and milk products (OR = 0.57, 95% CI = 0.35–0.94, p = 0.027). Fruits, food made from beans and milk products modified the associations of physical exercise with prevalent cognitive impairment (p values for interaction = 0.008, 0.005 and 0.082, respectively). Conclusions: The associations of physical exercise with cognitive impairment could be modified by certain dietary habits. Physical exercise was not found to be significantly protective with respect to cognitive impairment in older adults unless they had specific dietary habits. Thus, dietary habits should be emphasized when investigating the beneficial effects of physical exercise on cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To describe high-functioning older adults' experiences of participation in daily activities and perceived barriers and facilitators to participation one- and 3-months post-acute hospitalization. BACKGROUND Older adults discharged after acute illness hospitalization are at risk for functional decline and adverse health outcomes. Yet, little is known about the subjective experience of resuming participation in meaningful activities beyond the immediate post-discharge period among high-functioning older adults, a mostly overlooked sub-sample. DESIGN Qualitative descriptive longitudinal study adhering to the COREQ guidelines. METHODS Forty two participants ages ≥65 years (mean age 75, SD ± 7.9) were recruited from internal medicine wards. Semi-structured interviews were conducted at participants' homes one-month post-discharge, followed by a telephone interview 3-months after. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Participants perceived the hospitalization as a disruption of healthy and meaningful routines. This first key theme had unique expressions over time and included two sub-themes. At one month: (1) reduced life spaces and sedentary routines. At 3 months: (2) a matter of quality not quantity - giving up even one meaningful activity can make a difference. The second key theme was described as a combination of physical and psychological barriers to participation over time. These themes demonstrated the profound impact of the hospitalization on behavior (participation) and feelings (e.g., symptoms). The third key theme was described as a dyad of intrinsic and extrinsic facilitators to participation. CONCLUSIONS Acute illness hospitalization may lead to subtle decreases in participation in meaningful health-promoting activities, even among high-functioning older adults. These changes may impact overall well-being and possibly mark the beginning of functional decline. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This study highlights the need for a more comprehensive assessment of participation, relevant for high-functioning older adults, to enable person-centered care. Intervention programs should address the modifiable barriers and facilitators identified in this study.

Abstract
Aim: To explore the network relationship between cognitive function, depressive symptom intensity, body composition, proxies of cognitive reserve, trophic factor, adipokines and myokines, physical performance and blood pressure in a group of older people with poorly managed hypertension (PMHTN) compared to a normotensive (NTN) group. Materials and methods: History of hypertension and blood pressure level were examined in older participants. Thirty-one subjects diagnosed with PMHTN (history of hypertension diagnosis and values of sBP or dBP over 140/90 mmHg) and eighteen NTN (lack of history of hypertension and sBP and dBP lower than 140/90 mmHg) participated. Participants completed physical and cognitive function assessments: including the Mini–Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and its two subtests Delayed Recall (DR) and Verbal Fluency (VF) and Trail Making Test Part B (TMT B). Factors associated with cognitive functioning: age, years of education, cognitive and travel activity were assessed using a questionnaire. Visceral fat was determined by bioimpedance testing and gait velocity and agility assessed using an Up and Go test. To summarize the strength and direction (negative or positive) of a relationship between two variables, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used. Then, network graphs were created to illustrate the relationship between variables. Node strength (number of edges per node), neighbourhood connectivity (the average connectivity of all the neighbours of a node), stress (the number of shortest paths passing through each node) were compared in network from PMHTN group to network from NTN group. Results: Neighbourhood connectivity and stress were significantly higher in of the PMHTN network compared to NTN (6.03 ± 1.5 vs. 4.23 ± 2.5, p = 0.005 and 118.21 ± 137.6 vs. 56.87 ± 101.5, p = 0.02, accordingly). Conclusion: In older subjects with poorly managed hypertension, dyshomeostasis was observed, compared to normotensive subjects.

Abstract
Function after acute hospitalization is mostly operationalized by Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADL), a limited concept that overshadows a wide range of instrumental, social, and recreational activities, otherwise referred to as participation. Participation is important for patients' health and quality of life after hospitalization. This study focuses on high-functioning older adults, examining functional recovery after hospitalization by comparing BADL assessment with assessment of participation at one and three months following discharge relative to pre-hospitalization. Quantitative data were collected from 72 participants divided into two age groups of hospitalized older adults (age 65-74, n = 38; age ≥75, n = 34), followed by home visits after 1 month and telephone interviews 3 months after discharge. Both groups experienced a significantly greater decline in participation, compared with BADL, which were mostly preserved. A comprehensive assessment of participation better captures functional changes in high-functioning older adults. Early identification of participation withdrawal is crucial for preventing disability.

Abstract
Objectives: Experiencing multi-sensory cognitive stimulation through the enjoyment of Cantonese opera songs, with their lively rhythms, familiar folk tales, meaningful lyrics and pleasant scenarios, has the potential to increase neuroplasticity and prevent cognitive decline.Methods: This prospective pre- and post-test quasi-experimental randomised controlled trial design study aimed to explore the social benefits of older adults' active participation in practising Cantonese opera songs as compared with passive participation (as an audience) and a non-interventional control group on cognitive function psychological function, functional independence, well-being and health.Results: By recruiting a group of older adults who were receiving day activities social service in Hong Kong. Thirty participants were randomly allocated to active participation in Cantonese opera (ACO). They participated in practising Cantonese opera songs. Thirty-four participants were assigned to passive participation in Cantonese opera (PCO). They received passive intervention by listening to and appreciating the opera songs as a social event. Thirty-one participants were used as a control group and received no similar training. (Results) ACO caused a positive change in cognitive function as compared to PCO and to no intervention, which implies that active learning and practise of opera songs benefits global cognitive function. The psychological function of the participants in the PCO group showed an elevated positive affect and a reduced negative affect. A statistically significant difference was noted in the time effect among the physical domains of health status, functional independence and well-being of participants who underwent Cantonese opera intervention.

Abstract
Based on the data of four periods of CLHLS (2008, 2011, 2014, 2018), the latent variable growth model (LGCM) was applied to 2344 older adults who completed four follow-up surveys, to study the trajectory of leisure activities and cognitive ability and explore the relationship between leisure activities and cognitive ability of older adults. The results showed that: (1) leisure activities and cognitive ability of older adults showed a non-linear downward trend; (2) leisure activities significantly and positively predicted the cognitive ability of older adults at every time point; (3) the initial level of leisure activity positively predicted the initial level of cognitive ability but negatively predicted the rate of cognitive decline; In addition, cognitive activities had a greater effect on cognitive ability than non-exercise physical activities; (4) the rate of decline of leisure activities also significantly and positively predicted the rate of decline of cognitive ability; (5) cross-lagged regression analysis further suggested the overall positive predictive effect of leisure activity on cognitive ability; (6) overall, education level had a significant contribution to cognitive ability, and the higher the education level, the slower the decline of cognitive ability; and (7) smoking could promote cognitive ability in older adults and no significant effect was found between alcohol drinking and cognitive ability. Accordingly, the government should encourage older adults to do more leisure activities, especially the cognitive activity, to effectively prevent cognitive decline.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the long-term cognitive trajectories and its' determinants, and construct prediction models for identifying high-risk populations with unfavorable cognitive trajectories. METHODS This study included 3502 older adults aged 65-105 years at their first observations in a 16-year longitudinal cohort study. Cognitive function was measured by the Chinese version Mini Mental State Examination. The heterogeneity of cognitive function was identified through mixed growth model. Machine learning algorithms, namely regularized logistic regression (r-LR), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and super learner (SL) were used to predict cognitive trajectories. Discrimination and calibration metrics were used for performance evaluation. RESULTS Two distinct trajectories were identified according to the changes of MMSE scores: intact cognitive functioning (93.6%), and dementia (6.4%). Older age, female gender, Han ethnicity, having no schooling, rural residents, low-frequency leisure activities, and low baseline BADL score were associated with a rapid decline in cognitive function. r-LR, SVM, and SL performed well in predicting cognitive trajectories (Sensitivity: 0.73, G-mean: 0.65). Age and psychological well-being were key predictors. CONCLUSION Two cognitive trajectories were identified among older Chinese, and the identified key factors could be targeted for constructing early risk prediction models.

Abstract
Identifying retained activity participation to old age can improve age-related changes in balance and cognition function. Subjects ≥ 60 years were enrolled in this study. Balance and Cognitive function include working memory, executive function, and sustained and divided attention was evaluated with “Fullerton advanced balance”, “n-back”, “Wisconsin card sort”, “sustain and divided attention test”, respectively. In addition, retained activity participation was measured using the Activity Card Sort questionnaire. The univariate and multivariate regression analyses of different domains of retained activity participation were used as independent variables, including instrumental activity, low-effort leisure, high-effort leisure, and social activity on balance and specific domains of cognition. Seventy-seven subjects (65.3 ± 4.4 years, 61% female) were included. About 47% of older adults had a college education, 32.3% had a diploma, and 20.7% had elementary−middle education. These results show that retained instrumental activity had a relationship with working memory (β = 0.079, p < 0.05). In addition, we found that retained high-effort leisure activity can increase balance, divided attention, and executive function score (β = 0.1, β = 0.05, β = 0.02, p < 0.05). Moreover, there was a positive relationship between retained low-effort activity and sustained attention (β = 0.08, p < 0.05). In addition, the coefficient of determination (R2) for balance, working memory, executive function, sustained, and divided attention were 0.45, 0.25, 0.13, 0.11 and 0.18, respectively. The study suggests that retained activity participation types may have various effects on balance and some selective cognitive components in older people.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Engagement in cognitively stimulating work and activities may slow cognitive decline and dementia. We examined the individual and combined associations of four cognitive engagement indices (educational attainment, occupational complexity, social engagement, and cognitively stimulating leisure activities) with objective and subjective cognition. METHODS Middle-aged adults (n = 1864) enrolled in the Healthy Brain Project completed the Cogstate Brief Battery, the Cognitive Function Instrument, and self-report questionnaires of cognitive engagement. RESULTS Educational attainment and leisure activity engagement were individually associated with memory performance. Participants were classified based on whether they rated highly in zero to four cognitive engagement indices. Compared to participants with no indices, participants with two or more indices performed moderately better on memory. DISCUSSION Results suggest that greater variety of cognitive engagement across different areas of life is related to better memory in midlife. Possible explanation for this relationship may be increased opportunity for enhancing cognitive reserve, but further investigations are required.

Abstract
ObjectivesLiving arrangement has been reported to have a significant influence on feelings of loneliness in older adults, but their living preferences may confound the association. This study aimed to investigate whether the associations of living arrangements with loneliness differ in community-dwelling older adults according to different living preferences.MethodsIn the 2008/2009 (baseline) and 2011/2012 (follow-up) waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, living arrangements [living with children mainly (LWC), living with spouse only (LWS), and living alone (LA)], living preferences [preferring living with children (PreLWC) and preferring living alone/only with spouse (PreLA)], and feelings of loneliness were assessed. The effect modifications of living preferences in the associations of living arrangements with loneliness were estimated using logistic regression models, and corresponding odds ratios (ORs) were calculated.ResultsLiving preferences significantly modified the associations of living arrangements with loneliness at baseline (p for interaction = 0.009 for LWS and = 0.015 for LA). Compared with LWC, LWS was protective for loneliness only in the PreLA older adults at baseline (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.45–0.64, p < 0.001), and LA was significantly associated with loneliness especially in the PreLWC older adults, compared with their PreLA counterparts (at baseline, ORs = 2.89 vs. 2.15; at follow-up, ORs = 1.68 vs. 1.51).ConclusionLiving preference modifies the associations of living arrangements with loneliness, and those who prefer living with children but live alone are more likely to feel lonely. It is recommended that living preferences should be considered when managing loneliness in community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
Background Although it has been suggested that loneliness is a risk factor for adverse health outcomes, living arrangement may confound the association. This study aimed to investigate whether the associations of loneliness with adverse health outcomes differ in community-dwelling older adults according to different living arrangements. Methods In the 2008/2009 wave of Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, 13,738 community-dwelling older adults (≥65 years) were included for analyses. Living arrangements and loneliness were assessed. Health outcomes including cognitive and physical functions were assessed using MMSE, ADL/IADL scales and Frailty Index in the 2008/2009 and 2011/2012 waves; mortality was assessed in the 3-year follow-up from 2008/2009 to 2011/2012. The effect modificaitons of loneliness on adverse health outcomes by living arrangements were estimated using logistic regression or Cox proportional hazards regression models. Results Living alone older adults were significantly more likely to be lonely at baseline (52% vs 29.5%, OR = 1.90, 95% CI = 1.67–2.16, P < 0.001), compared with those living with others. Loneliness in older adults was a significant risk factor for prevalent cognitive impairment and frailty, and 3-year mortality, especially among those who lived with others (OR = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.15–1.52, P < 0.001; OR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.24–1.57, P < 0.001; HR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.05–1.24, P = 0.002, respectively). In contrast, among the living alone older adults, loneliness was only significantly associated with higher prevalence of frailty (OR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.07–1.90, P = 0.017). Living arrangement significantly modified the associations of loneliness with prevalent cognitive impairment and 3-year mortality (P values for interaction = 0.005 and 0.026, respectively). Conclusions Living arrangement modifies the associations of loneliness with adverse health outcomes in community-dwelling older adults, and those who lived with others but felt lonely had worse cognitive and physical functions as well as higher mortality. Special attention should be paid to this population and more social services should be developed to reduce adverse health outcomes, in order to improve their quality of life and promote successful aging. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between total physical activity and different dimensions of cognitive function (orientation, attention, and memory) among older adults in rural Sichuan, China. This cross-sectional study involved 715 older adults (average age of 72 years). Total PA was measured by the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly, and cognitive function was assessed by the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS) questionnaire. The multivariate linear regression analysis indicated that total PA and household PA were significantly associated with the overall Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status score (β = 0.143, p < .001; β = 0.115, p = .002, respectively), the orientation dimension (β = 0.142, p < .001; β = 0.131, p = .001, respectively), and the memory dimension (β = 0.179, p < .001; β = 0.134, p = .001, respectively). The study showed a positive association between total PA, household PA, and cognitive function in older adults, especially in the orientation dimension and the memory dimension of cognitive function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most countries in the world, including China, are experiencing serious aging problems. The decline of cognitive function seriously affects the quality of life of the elderly in their later years and brings an inevitable heavy burden to the family and society. Therefore, in order to achieve successful aging, the purpose of this study is to test the serial multiple mediation effect of anxiety and loneliness between leisure activity and cognitive function in Chinese elderly population. METHODS Using 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) dataset, we finally selected 6,525 Chinese elderly people over 65 years old after screening. Firstly, we described the basic social demographic information of the sample population. Secondly, Spearman correlation analysis was used to determine whether there is a correlation between leisure activity, anxiety, loneliness and cognitive function in Chinese elderly. Finally, the serial multiple mediation analysis was completed using the SPSS macro PROCESS program. RESULTS Leisure activity, anxiety, loneliness and cognitive function were significantly correlated (p<0.01). Leisure activity can not only have a direct positive impact on the cognitive function of the elderly (effect=0.2231; SE=0.0122; 95%CI: LL=0.1992, UL=0.2470), but also have an indirect impact on the cognitive function through three paths: the independent mediating role of anxiety (effect=0.0028; SE=0.0015; 95%CI: LL=0.0001, UL=0.0059), the independent mediating role of loneliness (effect=0.0032; SE=0.0016; 95%CI: LL=0.0002, UL=0.0065), and the chain mediating role of anxiety and loneliness (effect=0.0008; SE=0.0004; 95%CI: LL=0.0001, UL=0.0017). LIMITATIONS All items were self-reported and some results may have biased. In the future, it may be more instructive to explore the impact of specific leisure activity on the cognitive function of the elderly. CONCLUSIONS The study suggests that leisure activity can improve cognitive function through decreasing anxiety and loneliness among the Chinese elderly. Diversified interventions aimed at increasing leisure activity participation in older adults would be beneficial for their mental health and cognitive function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social relationships consist of distinct dimensions. The literature on the effect of specific social relationship subdomains on cognitive function is limited. This large-scale, prospective cohort study examined the associations of social relationships with cognitive decline and further explored which subdomains of social relationships were predictive of cognitive decline among elderly Chinese individuals. METHODS A total of 3314 older Chinese adults aged 65-110 years from the 2011-2012 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) were included. Cognitive decline was defined based on the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Social relationships were divided into three subdomains: social activities, social networks, and social support. Linear and binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the effect of social relationships and the social relationship subdomains on cognitive decline after adjusting for age, sex, education, residence, exercise, drinking, smoking, activities of daily living, chronic diseases, depression, and baseline cognitive function. RESULTS Seven hundred and sixty-eight participants (23.17%) developed greater cognitive decline during the 3-year follow-up. The social relationships score was negatively associated with cognitive decline. Binary adjusted odds ratios showed that after potential covariates were controlled, social relationships, activities, and networks significantly reduced the risk of cognitive decline. When all social relationships variables were entered simultaneously with all covariates, the effect of social activities and networks on the risk of greater cognitive decline remained significant. However, we did not observe a significant association between social support and the risk of greater cognitive decline. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that social relationships and the subdomains of social activities and networks, but not social support, have a protective effect against greater cognitive decline in older adults. This implies that structural dimensions of social relationships might be more important than functional dimensions in preserving cognitive health among elderly Chinese individuals.
