Abstract
Aquatic fishes are threatened by the strong pathogenic bacterium Nocardia seriolae, which challenges the current prevention and treatment approaches. This study introduces luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) as an innovative and non-antibiotic therapy for N. seriolae. Specifically, the AIE photosensitizer, TTCPy-3 is employed against N. seriolae. We evaluated the antibacterial activity of TTCPy-3 and investigated the killing mechanism against N. seriolae, emphasizing its ability to aggregate within the bacterium and produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). TTCPy-3 could effectively aggregate in N. seriolae, generate ROS, and perform real-time imaging of the bacteria. A bactericidal efficiency of 100% was observed while concentrations exceeding 4 μM in the presence of white light irradiation for 10 min. In vivo, evaluation on zebrafish (Danio rerio) confirmed the superior therapeutic efficacy induced by TTCPy-3 to fight against N. seriolae infections. TTCPy-3 offers a promising strategy for treating nocardiosis of fish, paving the way for alternative treatments beyond traditional antibiotics and potentially addressing antibiotic resistance.

Abstract
Nanozymes is a kind of nanomaterials with enzyme catalytic properties. Compared with natural enzymes, nanozymes merge the advantages of both nanomaterials and natural enzymes, which is highly important in applications such as biosensing, clinical diagnosis, and food inspection. In this study, we prepared β-MnOOH hexagonal nanoflakes with a high oxygen vacancy ratio by utilizing SeO2 as a sacrificial agent. The defect-rich MnOOH hexagonal nanoflakes demonstrated excellent oxidase-like activity, catalyzing the oxidation substrate in the presence of O2, thereby rapidly triggering a color reaction. Consequently, a colorimetric sensing platform was constructed to assess the total antioxidant capacity in commercial beverages. The strategy of introducing defects in situ holds great significance for the synthesis of a series of high-performance metal oxide nanozymes, driving the development of faster and more efficient biosensing and analysis methods.

Abstract
Designing supramolecular architectures with uncommon geometries has always been a key goal in the field of metal-ligand coordination-driven self-assembly. It acquires added significance if functional building units are employed in constructing such architectures for fruitful applications. In this report, we address both these aspects by developing a water-soluble Pd16L8 coordination cage 1 with an unusual square orthobicupola geometry, which was used for selective aerobic oxidation of aryl sulfides. Self-assembly of a benzothiadiazole-based tetra-pyridyl donor L with a ditopic cis-[(tmeda)Pd(NO3)2] acceptor [tmeda = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethane-1,2-diamine] produced 1, and the geometry was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. Unlike the typically observed tri- or tetrafacial barrel, the present Pd16L8 coordination assembly features a distinctive structural topology and is a unique example of a water-soluble molecular architecture with a square orthobicupola geometry. Efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides is an important challenge as conventional oxidation generally leads to the formation of sulfoxide along with toxic sulfone. Cage 1, designed with a ligand containing a benzothiadiazole moiety, demonstrates an ability to photogenerate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in water, thus enabling it to serve as a potential photocatalyst. The cage showed excellent catalytic efficiency for highly selective conversion of alkyl and aryl sulfides to their corresponding sulfoxides, therefore without the formation of toxic sulfones and other byproducts, under visible light in aqueous medium.

Abstract
Bacterial infection poses a significant challenge to wound healing and skin regeneration, leading to substantial economic burdens on patients and society. Therefore, it is crucial to promptly explore and develop effective methodologies for bacterial infections. Herein, we propose a novel approach for synthesizing nanostructures based on antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) through the coordination-driven self-assembly of Zn2+ with ASO molecules. This approach aims to provide effective synergistic therapy for chronic wound infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The resulting hybrid nanoparticles successfully preserve the structural integrity and biological functionalities of ASOs, demonstrating excellent ASO encapsulation efficiency and bioaccessibility. In vitro antibacterial experiments reveal that Zn-ASO NPs exhibit antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. This antibacterial ability is attributed to the high concentration of metal zinc ions and the generation of high levels of reactive oxygen species. Additionally, the ftsZ-ASO effectively inhibits the expression of the ftsZ gene, further enhancing the antimicrobial effect. In vivo antibacterial assays demonstrate that the Zn-ASO NPs promote optimal skin wound healing and exhibit favorable biocompatibility against S. aureus infections, resulting in a residual infected area of less than 8%. This combined antibacterial strategy, which integrates antisense gene therapy and metal-coordination-directed self-assembly, not only achieves synergistic and augmented antibacterial outcomes but also expands the horizons of ASO coordination chemistry. Moreover, it addresses the gap in the antimicrobial application of metal-coordination ASO self-assembly, thereby advancing the field of ASO-based therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
Oxygen vacancy (Ov) is known to act as an active center of the metal oxide. Quantification of surface Ov is vital for understanding the quantitative structure-activity relationship. Facile quantification characterization of surface Ov is highly desirable but still challenging. In this study, we presented a simple colorimetric method for rapidly quantifying surface Ov. As an example of metal oxide nanoparticles, Co3O4 was used to catalyze the 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB)-H2O2 colorimetric reaction. It was found that the absorbance of the TMB-H2O2 system was dependent on the surface Ov amount in Co3O4. The investigation of the mechanism showed that the Ov-dependent absorbance would be attributed to the activity of surface Ov to easily adsorb and dissociate H2O2 into a hydroxyl radical (•OH). The absorbance signal of the TMB-H2O2 system acted as a probe to estimate the surface Ov. This colorimetric measurement could be completed in less than 20 min. The Ov concentrations obtained by the proposed colorimetric method matched well with those obtained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This method does not require any complex operation and expensive equipment and can be performed in any ordinary chemical laboratory. So, this colorimetric method is expected to become an alternative approach for quantifying the surface Ov in metal oxide nanoparticles. This method will provide essential insights into the rational design and application of Ov.

Abstract
Development of metal-free nanozymes has raised concern for their extensive applications in photocatalysis and sensing fields. As novel metal-free nanomaterials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have engendered intense interest in the construction of nanozymes due to their structural controllability and molecular functionality. The formation of the molecular arrangement by embedding orderly donor-acceptors (D-A) linked in the framework topology to modulate material properties for highly efficient enzyme mimicking activity is of importance but challenging. Here, a strong D-A type of COF was designed and synthesized by integrating electron donor units (pyrene) and electron acceptor units (phenanthroline), named Py-PD COF. Using experiments and theoretical calculations, the introduction of a phenanthroline ring endowed the Py-PD COF with a narrowed band gap, and efficient charge transfer and separation. Further, the Py-PD COF exhibited a superior light-responsive oxidase-mimicking characteristic under visible light irradiation, which could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and give the corresponding evolution of color. The nanoenzymatic activity of the Py-PD COF was light-regulated, which offers a fascinating advantage because of its high efficiency and spatial controllability. Based on previously mentioned characteristics, an "on-off" sensing platform for the colorimetric analysis of isoniazid (INH) could be constructed with a good linear relationship (2-100 μM) and a low limit of detection (1.26 μM). This research shows that not only is Py-PD COF an environmentally friendly compound for the colorimetric detection of INH, but it is also capable of providing the interesting D-A type COF-based material for designing an excellent nanozyme.

Guest-Regulated Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species from Porphyrin-Based Multicomponent Metallacages for Selective Photocatalysis. Angew Chem Int Ed Engl 2024; 63:e202319488. Abstract
The development of novel materials for highly efficient and selective photocatalysis is crucial for their practical applications. Herein, we employ the host-guest chemistry of porphyrin-based metallacages to regulate the generation of reactive oxygen species and further use them for the selective photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohols. Upon irradiation, the sole metallacage (6) can generate singlet oxygen (1O2) effectively via excited energy transfer, while its complex with C70 (6⊃C70) opens a pathway for electron transfer to promote the formation of superoxide anion (O2⋅-), producing both 1O2 and O2⋅-. The addition of 4,4'-bipyridine (BPY) to complex 6⊃C70 forms a more stable complex (6⊃BPY) via the coordination of the Zn-porphyrin faces of 6 and BPY, which drives fullerenes out of the cavities and restores the ability of 1O2 generation. Therefore, benzyl alcohols are oxidized into benzyl aldehydes upon irradiation in the presence of 6 or 6⊃BPY, while they are oxidized into benzoic acids when 6⊃C70 is employed as the photosensitizing agent. This study demonstrates a highly efficient strategy that utilizes the host-guest chemistry of metallacages to regulate the generation of reactive oxygen species for selective photooxidation reactions, which could promote the utilization of metallacages and their related host-guest complexes for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with complex pathogenesis and effective clinical treatment strategies for this disease remain elusive. Interestingly, nanomedicines are under extensive investigation for AD management. Currently, existing redox molecules show highly bioactive property but suffer from instability and high production costs, limiting clinical application for neurological diseases. Compared with natural enzymes, artificial enzymes show high stability, long-lasting catalytic activity, and versatile enzyme-like properties. Further, the selectivity and performance of artificial enzymes can be modulated for neuroinflammation treatments through external stimuli. In this review, we focus on the latest developments of metal, metal oxide, carbon-based and polymer based nanozymes and their catalytic mechanisms. Recent developments in nanozymes for diagnosing and treating AD are emphasized, especially focusing on their potential to regulate pathogenic factors and target sites. Various applications of nanozymes with different stimuli-responsive features were discussed, particularly focusing on nanozymes for treating oxidative stress-related neurological diseases. Noninvasiveness and focused application to deep body regions makes ultrasound (US) an attractive trigger mechanism for nanomedicine. Since a complete cure for AD remains distant, this review outlines the potential of US responsive nanozymes to develop future therapeutic approaches for this chronic neurodegenerative disease and its emergence in AD management.

Abstract
Making oppositely charged metal-organic cages (MOCs) into a tightly ordered structure may bring interesting functions. Herein, we report a novel structure composed of anionic (Zr4 L6 )8- (L=embonate) tetrahedral cages and in situ-formed cationic [Zn4 (Bim)4 ]4+ (Bim=[BH(im)3 ]- ; im=imidazole) cubic cages. Chiral transfer is observed from enantiopure (Zr4 L6 )8- cage to enantiopure [Zn4 (Bim)4 ]4+ cage. A pair of enantiomers (PTC-373(Δ) and PTC-373(Λ)) are formed. PTC-373 exhibits high chemical and thermal stabilities, affording an interesting single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation. More importantly, the combination of ionic pair cages significantly enhances its third-order nonlinear optical property, and its thin-film exhibits an excellent optical limiting effect.

Abstract
The emergence of drug-resistant bacteria has significantly diminished the efficacy of existing antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections. Consequently, the need for finding a strategy capable of effectively combating bacterial infections has become increasingly urgent. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is considered one of the most promising emerging antibacterial strategies due to its non-invasiveness, low adverse effect, and the fact that it does not lead to the development of drug resistance. However, bacteria at the infection sites often exist in the form of biofilm instead of the planktonic form, resulting in a hypoxic microenvironment. This phenomenon compromises the treatment outcome of oxygen-dependent type-II PDT. Compared to type-II PDT, type-I PDT is not constrained by the oxygen concentration in the infected tissues. Therefore, in the treatment of bacterial infections, type-I PDT exhibits significant advantages over type-II PDT. In this review, we first introduce the fundamental principles of type-I PDT in details, including its physicochemical properties and how it generates reactive oxygen species (ROS). Next, we explore several specific antimicrobial mechanisms utilized by type-I PDT and summarize the recent applications of type-I PDT in antimicrobial treatment. Finally, the limitations and future development directions of type-I photosensitizers are discussed. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The misuse and overuse of antibiotics have accelerated the development of bacterial resistance. To achieve the effective eradication of resistant bacteria, pathfinders have devised various treatment strategies. Among these strategies, type I photodynamic therapy has garnered considerable attention owing to its non-oxygen dependence. The utilization of non-oxygen-dependent photodynamic therapy not only enables the effective elimination of drug-resistant bacteria but also facilitates the successful eradication of hypoxic biofilms, which exhibits promising prospects for treating biofilm-associated infections. Based on the current research status, we anticipate that the novel type I photodynamic therapy agent can surmount the biofilm barrier, enabling efficient treatment of hypoxic biofilm infections.

Abstract
Along with the rapid development and ever-deepening understanding of nanoscience and nanotechnology, nanomaterials hold promise to mimic the highly evolved biological exquisite nanostructures and sophisticated functions. Here, inspired by the ubiquitous antibacterial nanostructures on the wing surfaces of some insects, a NiCo2 O4 nanozyme with self-adaptive hierarchical nanostructure is developed that can capture bacteria of various morphotypes via the physico-mechanical interaction between the nanostructure and bacteria. Moreover, the developed biomimetic nanostructure further exhibits superior peroxidase-like catalytic activity, which can catalytically generate highly toxic reactive oxygen species that disrupt bacterial membranes and induce bacterial apoptosis. Therefore, the mechano-catalytic coupling property of this NiCo2 O4 nanozyme allows for an extensive and efficient antibacterial application, with no concerns of antimicrobial resistance. This work suggests a promising strategy for the rational design of advanced antibacterial materials by mimicking biological antibiosis.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) derived nitrogen-doped carbon-supported monodisperse Fe (Fe-N-C) catalysts are intensively studied, but great challenges remain in understanding the relationship between the coordination structure and the performance of Fe-N-C nanozymes. Herein, a novel nanocluster ligand-bridging strategy is proposed for constructing Fe-S1 N4 structures with axially coordinated S and Au nanoclusters on ZIF-8 derived Fe-N-C (labeled Aux /Fe-S1 N4 -C). The axial Au nanoclusters facilitate electron transfer to Fe active sites, utilizing the bridging ligand S as a medium, thereby enhancing the oxygen adsorption capacity of composite nanozymes. Compared to Fe-N-C, Aux /Fe-S1 N4 -C exhibits high oxidase-like specificity and activity, and holds great potential for detecting acetylcholinesterase activity with a detection limit of 5.1 µU mL-1 , surpassing most reported nanozymes.

Abstract
Enzymatic catalysis presents an eco-friendly, energy-efficient method for lignin degradation. However, challenges arise due to the inherent incompatibility between enzymes and native lignin. In this work, we introduce a supramolecular catalyst composed of fluorenyl-modified amino acids and Cu2+, designed based on the aromatic stacking of the fluorenyl group, which can operate in ionic liquid environments suitable for the dissolution of native lignin. Amino acids and halide anions of ionic liquids shape the copper site's coordination sphere, showcasing remarkable catechol oxidase-mimetic activity. The catalyst exhibits thermophilic property, and maintains oxidative activity up to 75 °C, which allows the catalyzed degradation of the as-dissolved native lignin with high efficiency even without assistance of the electron mediator. In contrast, at this condition, the native copper-dependent oxidase completely lost its activity. This catalyst with superior stability and activity offer promise for sustainable lignin valorization through biocatalytic routes compatible with ionic liquid pretreatment, addressing limitations in native enzymes for industrially relevant conditions.

Abstract
Despite the widespread use of nanozyme-based colorimetric assays in biosensing, challenges such as limited catalytic efficiency, inadequate sensitivity to analytes, and insufficient understanding of the structure-activity relationship still persist. Overcoming these hurdles by enhancing the inherent enzyme-like performance of nanozymes using the unique attributes of nanomaterials is still a significant obstacle. Here, we designed and constructed Pd-Cu2O nanocages (Pd-Cu2O NCs) by selectively etching the vertices of the copper octahedra to enhance the peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity of Cu2O nanoparticles. The improved catalytic activity of Pd-Cu2O NCs was attributed to their high specific surface area and abundant catalytic sites. Mechanistic studies revealed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) intermediates (•OH) were generated through the decomposition of H2O2, resulting in POD-like activity of the Pd-Cu2O NCs. The designed Pd-Cu2O NCs can oxidize 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2, producing a blue oxidation product (oxTMB). The oxidation reaction was inhibited and led to a significant bleaching of the blue color in the presence of reducing substances isoniazid (INH) and ascorbic acid (AA). Based on these principles, we developed a colorimetric sensing platform for the detection of INH and AA, exhibiting good sensitivity and stability. This work provided a straightforward approach to the structural engineering of nanomaterials and the enhancement of enzyme-mimicking properties.

Abstract
Developing sensitive, rapid, and convenient methods for the detection of residual toxic pesticides is immensely important to prevent irreversible damage to the human body. Luminescent metal-organic cages and macrocycles have shown great applications, and designing highly emissive supramolecular systems in dilute solution using metal-ligand coordination-driven self-assembly is demanded. In this study, we have demonstrated the development of a silver-carbene bond directed tetranuclear silver(I)-octacarbene metallacage [Ag4(L)2](PF6)4 (1) based on an aggregation-induced emissive (AIE) cored 1,1',1″,1‴-((1,4-phenylenebis(ethene-2,1,1-triyl))tetrakis(benzene-4,1-diyl))tetrakis(3-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium) salt (L). A 36-fold enhanced emission was observed after metallacage (1) formation when compared with the ligand (L) in dilute solution due to the restriction of intramolecular motions imparted by metal-ligand coordination. Such an increase in fluorescence made 1 a potential candidate for the detection of a broad-spectrum pesticide, 2,6-dichloro-nitroaniline (DCN). 1 was able to detect DCN efficiently by the fluorescence quenching method with a significant detection limit (1.64 ppm). A combination of static and dynamic quenching was applicable depending on the analyte concentration. The use of silver-carbene bond directed self-assembly to exploit coordination-induced emission as an alternative to AIE in dilute solution and then apply this approach to solve health and safety concerns is noteworthy and carries a lot of potential for future developments.

Abstract
In this study, a novel approach exploiting the interactions between hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ruthenium-nitrogen-carbon (Ru-N-C) nanozymes is presented, advancing H2S and cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) biosensing techniques. Utilizing the intrinsic peroxidase-like activity of Ru-N-C nanozymes and the noticeable inhibition effect caused by H2S, an efficient, simple, and economical assay has been developed. This innovative method allows for the versatile real-time monitoring of H2S from various sources, including specialized donors and native bacterial production. Furthermore, the assay has been applied to reveal the interactions within tumor cells and tissues ex vivo, providing a clearer and simpler view of CSE expression levels through an improved colorimetric method. This contribution enhances our understanding of the complex roles of H2S metabolism and represents a significant advancement in the versatile application of nanozymes in biomedical research.

Abstract
Through coordination-driven self-assembly, aesthetically captivating structures can be formed by tuning the length or flexibility of various components. The self-assembly of an elongated rigid terphenyl-based tetra-pyridyl ligand (L1) with a cis-Pd(II) acceptor produces an [M12 L16 ]24+ triangular orthobicupola structure (1). When flexibility is introduced into the ligand by the incorporation of a -CH2 - group between the dipyridylamine and terphenyl rings in the ligand (L2), anunique [M8 L24 ]16+ water-soluble 'intertwined cubic structure' (2) results. The inherent flexibility of ligand L2 might be the key factor behind the formation of the thermodynamically stable and 'intertwined cubic structure' in this scenario. This research showcases the ability to design and fabricate novel, topologically distinctive molecular structures by a straightforward and efficient approach.

Nowadays, the increasing emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms requires the search for alternative methods that do not cause drug resistance. Phototherapy strategies (PTs) based on the photoresponsive materials have become a new trend in the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms due to their spatiotemporal controllability and negligible side effects. Among those phototherapy strategies, photocatalytic antimicrobial therapy (PCAT) has emerged as an effective and promising antimicrobial strategy in recent years. In the process of photocatalytic treatment, photocatalytic materials are excited by different wavelengths of lights to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) or other toxic species for the killing of various pathogenic microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and algae. Therefore, this review timely summarizes the latest progress in the PCAT field, with emphasis on the development of various photocatalytic antimicrobials (PCAMs), the underlying antimicrobial mechanisms, the design strategies, and the multiple practical antimicrobial applications in local infections therapy, personal protective equipment, water purification, antimicrobial coatings, wound dressings, food safety, antibacterial textiles, and air purification. Meanwhile, we also present the challenges and perspectives of widespread practical implementation of PCAT as antimicrobial therapeutics. We hope that as a result of this review, PCAT will flourish and become an effective weapon against pathogenic microorganisms and antibiotic resistance.

Abstract
Regulation of the reaction pathways is a perennial theme in the field of chemistry. As a typical chromogenic substrate, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) generally undertakes one-electron oxidation, but the product (TMBox1) is essentially a confused complex and is unstable, which significantly hampers the clinic chromogenic bioassays for more than 50 years. Herein, we report that sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-based micelles could drive the direct two-electron oxidation of TMB to the final stable TMBox2. Rather than activation of H2O2 oxidant in the one-electron TMB oxidation by common natural peroxidase, activation of the TMB substrate by SDS micelles decoupled the thermodynamically favorable complex between TMBox2 with unreacted TMB, leading to an unusual direct two-electron oxidation pathway. Mechanism studies demonstrated that the complementary spatial and electrostatic isolation effects, caused by the confined hydrophobic cavities and negatively charged outer surfaces of SDS micelles, were crucial. Further cascading with glucose oxidase, as a proof-of-concept application, allowed glucose to be more reliably measured, even in a broader range of concentrations without any conventional strong acid termination.

Abstract
Nanozymes, nanomaterials possessing enzymatic activity, have been studied extensively by researchers. However, their complex composition, low density of active sites, and inadequate substrate selectivity have hindered the maturation and widespread acceptance of nanozymes. Single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) with atomically dispersed active sites are leading the field of catalysis due to their exceptional performance. The maximum utilization rate of atoms, low cost, well-defined coordination structure, and active sites are the most prominent advantages of SAzymes that researchers favor. This review systematically categorizes SAzymes based on their support type and describes their specific applications. Additionally, we discuss regulation strategies for SAzyme activity and provide a comprehensive summary of biosafety challenges associated with these enzymes.

Multifunctional light-controllable nanozyme enabled bimodal fluorometric/colorimetric sensing of mercury ions at ambient pH. Biosens Bioelectron 2023; 238:115602. Abstract
Nanomaterials with enzyme-like catalytic features (nanozymes) find wide use in analytical sensing. Apart from catalytic characteristics, some other interesting functions coexist in the materials. How to combine these properties to design multifunctional nanozymes for new sensing strategy development is challenging. Besides, in nanozymes it is still a challenge to conveniently control the catalytic process, which also hinders their further applications in advanced biochemical analysis. To remove the above barriers, here we design a light-controllable multifunctional nanozyme, namely manganese-inserted cadmium telluride (Mn-CdTe) particles, that integrates oxidase-like activity with luminescence together, to achieve the fluorometric/colorimetric dual-mode detection of toxic mercury ions (Hg2+) at ambient pH. The Mn-CdTe exhibits a light-triggered oxidase-mimicking catalytic behavior to induce chromogenic reactions, thus enabling one to start or stop the catalytic progress easily via applying or withdrawing light irradiation. Meanwhile, the quantum dot material can exhibit bright photoluminescence, which provides the fluorometric channel to sense targets. When Hg2+ is introduced, it rapidly leans toward Mn-CdTe through electrostatic interaction and Te-Hg bonding and induces the aggregation of the latter. As a result, the luminescence of Mn-CdTe is dynamically quenched, and the masking of active sites in aggregated Mn-CdTe leads to the decrease of light-initiated oxidase-mimetic activity. According to this principle, a new fluorometric/colorimetric bimodal method was established for Hg2+ determination with excellent performance. A 3D-printed portable platform combining paper-based test strips and an App-equipped smartphone was further fabricated, making it possible to achieve in-field sensing of the analyte in various matrices.

Abstract
Nanozymes are nanoparticles with intrinsic enzyme-mimicking properties that have become more prevalent because of their ability to outperform conventional enzymes by overcoming their drawbacks related to stability, cost, and storage. Nanozymes have the potential to manipulate active sites of natural enzymes, which is why they are considered promising candidates to function as enzyme mimetics. Several microscopy- and spectroscopy-based techniques have been used for the characterization of nanozymes. To date, a wide range of nanozymes, including catalase, oxidase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase, have been designed to effectively mimic natural enzymes. The activity of nanozymes can be controlled by regulating the structural and morphological aspects of the nanozymes. Nanozymes have multifaceted benefits, which is why they are exploited on a large scale for their application in the biomedical sector. The versatility of nanozymes aids in monitoring and treating cancer, other neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolic disorders. Due to the compelling advantages of nanozymes, significant research advancements have been made in this area. Although a wide range of nanozymes act as potent mimetics of natural enzymes, their activity and specificities are suboptimal, and there is still room for their diversification for analytical purposes. Designing diverse nanozyme systems that are sensitive to one or more substrates through specialized techniques has been the subject of an in-depth study. Hence, we believe that stimuli-responsive nanozymes may open avenues for diagnosis and treatment by fusing the catalytic activity and intrinsic nanomaterial properties of nanozyme systems.

Controlled Self-Assembly, Isomerism, and Guest Uptake/Release of Charge-Reversible Lanthanide-Organic Octahedral Cages. J Am Chem Soc 2023; 145:17845-17855. Abstract
Charge plays a crucial role in the function of molecular and supramolecular systems, but coordination hosts capable of orthogonal charge regulation remain elusive so far. In this study, we report the condition-dependent self-assembly of charge-reversible lanthanide-organic tetra-capped octahedral cages, i.e., [Ln6(H3L)4]6+ and [Ln6L4]6-, from a series of lanthanide ions (Ln3+; Ln = Lu, Yb, Eu) and a tritopic tetradentate acylhydrazone ligand (H6L) featuring multiple deprotonation states and propeller conformations. While direct self-assembly under basic conditions produced a mixture of various ΔxΛ6-x-[Ln6L4]6- (x = 0-6) stereoisomers, racemic Δ6- and Λ6-[Ln6L4]6- could be exclusively obtained from the first self-assembly of Δ6- and Λ6-[Ln6(H3L)4]6+ under neutral conditions followed by post-assembly deprotonation. Rich isomerism on the tetra-capped octahedral cages arising from the coupling between the metal-centered Δ/Λ chirality and the ligand conformations has been discussed based on X-ray single-crystal structures of the C3-symmetric Δ3Λ3-Ln6L4 and T-symmetric Δ6/Λ6-Ln6L4 complexes. Host-guest studies confirmed that positively charged rac-Δ6/Λ6-[Ln6(H3L)4]6+ could bind anionic sulfonates, and negatively charged rac-Δ6/Λ6-[Ln6L4]6- exhibited strong encapsulation ability toward ammonium guests, where acid/base-triggered guest uptake/release could be realized taking advantage of the charge reversibility of the cage. Moreover, photophysical studies revealed visible-light-sensitized and guest-encapsulation-enhanced NIR emissions on the rac-Δ6/Λ6-Yb6L4 cage. This work not only enriches the library of functional lanthanide-organic cages but also provides a promising candidate with charge reversibility for the development of smart supramolecular materials.

Abstract
Structural and functional modulation of three-dimensional artificial macromolecular systems is of immense importance. Designing supramolecular cages that can show stimuli mediated reversible switching between higher-order structures is quite challenging. We report here construction of a Pd6 trifacial barrel (1) by coordination self-assembly. Surprisingly, barrel 1 was found to exhibit guest-responsive behavior. In presence of fullerenes C60 and C70, 1 unprecedentedly transformed to its metastable higher homologue Pd8 tetrafacial barrel (2), forming stable host-guest complexes (C60)3⊂2 and (C70)2⊂2, respectively. Again, encapsulated fullerenes could be extracted from the cavity of 2 using 1,2-dichlorobenzene, leading to its facile conversion to the parent trifacial barrel 1. Such reversible structural interconversion between an adaptable molecular barrel and its guest stabilized higher homologue is an uncommon observation.

Abstract
A tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based flexible imidazolium (L) salt was used to develop a di-nuclear silver(I)-tetracarbene (1) complex. Coordination-induced rigidity upon formation of 1 exhibited a 6-fold increase in emission intensity in acetonitrile compared to starting L. Despite TPE being a well-known aggregation-induced emissive moiety, AgI-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex 1 had a remarkably higher fluorescence emission (4-fold) in dilute solution when compared with L in its aggregated state. Finally, this enhanced emission was used to institute a new platform for an artificial light-harvesting system. 1 acted as an energy donor and efficiently transferred energy to Eosin Y (ESY) with a high saturation at a 67:1 (1/ESY) molar ratio. Use of rigidification-induced emission of the AgI-NHC complex to fabricate a light-harvesting scaffold is a new approach and can greatly impact the generation of smart materials.

Abstract
The enzymatic activity of atomically precise metal nanoclusters has recently been recognized; however, the number of nanoclusterzymes is very small. Besides, the applications of nanoclusterzyme wait to be explored. Herein, a novel nanoclusterzyme is synthesized and its structure is majorly resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and mass spectrometry, which reveal that the nanocluster consists of an Au13 icosahedron capped by an exterior shell including four I, three Dppp (1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino) propane) ligands, and a rarely reported Dppp-Au-Dppp handle staple, which contributes a lot to the enzyme activity of [Au14 (Dppp)5 I4 ]2+ nanocluster. The as-obtained nanocluster can catalyze oxygen to O2 •- under visible light irradiation with a specific activity up to 0.182 U·mg-1 and lead to the blue color of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in both solution and solid states. With the addition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the blue color of (Au14 + TMB) solution system disappears due to the nanoclusterzyme activity inhibition, but the further addition of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) into the above mixture can restore the nanoclusterzyme and recover the blue color. Based on the color turn-off and on, the various nanoclusterzyme-containing systems are used to colorimetrically sense AChE and OPs with the detection limits reaching 0.04 mU·mL-1 and 0.02 ng·mL-1 , respectively.

Reversed Regulation Effects of ssDNA on the Mimetic Oxidase and Peroxidase Activities of Covalent Organic Frameworks. SMALL (WEINHEIM AN DER BERGSTRASSE, GERMANY) 2023:e2207798. Abstract
Nanomaterials with enzyme mimetic activity have attracted extensive attention, especially in the regulation of their catalytic activities by biomolecules or other polymers. Here, a covalent organic framework (Tph-BT COF) with excellent photocatalytic activity is constructed by Schiff base reaction, and its mimetic oxidase activity and peroxidase activity is inversely regulated via single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). Under light-emitting diode (LED) light irradiation, Tph-BT exhibited outstanding oxidase activity, which efficiently catalyzed oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce blue oxTMB, and ssDNA, especially those with poly-thymidine (T) sequences, can significantly inhibit its oxidase activity. On the contrary, Tph-BT showed weak peroxidase activity, and the presence of ssDNA, particularly poly-cytosine (C) sequences, can remarkably enhance the peroxidase activity. The influence of base type, base length, and other factors on the activities of two enzymes is also studied, and the results reveal that the adsorption of ssDNA on the surface of Tph-BT prevented intersystem crossing (ISC) and energy transfer processes to reduce 1 O2 generation, while the electrostatic interaction between ssDNA and TMB enhanced Tph-BT's affinity for TMB to facilitate the electron transfer from TMB to • OH. This study investigates multitype mimetic enzyme activities of nonmetallic D-A conjugated COFs and demonstrates their feasibility of regulation by ssDNA.

Abstract
A rare gyrobifastigium architecture (GB) was constructed by self-assembly of a tetradentate donor (L) with PdII acceptor in DMSO. The GB was converted to its isomeric tetragonal barrel (MB) upon treatment with water. The hydrophobic cavity of MB has been explored for the encapsulation of zinc-phthalocyanine (ZnPc), which is an excellent photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, the poor water-solubility and aggregation tendency are the main reasons for the suboptimal PDT performance of free ZnPc in the aqueous medium. Effective solubilization of ZnPc in an aqueous medium was achieved by encapsulating it in the cavity of MB. The inclusion complex (ZnPc⊂MB) showed enhanced singlet oxygen generation in water. Higher cellular uptake and anticancer activity of the ZnPc⊂MB compared to free ZnPc on HeLa cells indicate that encapsulation of ZnPc in an aqueous host is a potential strategy for enhancement of its PDT activity in water.

Abstract
Nanozymes are nanomaterials with enzyme-mimetic activity. It is known that DNA can interact with various nanozymes in different ways, enhancing or inhibiting the activity of nanozymes, which can be used to develop various biosensors. In this work, we synthesized a photosensitive covalent-organic framework (Tph-BT) as a nanozyme, and its oxidase and peroxidase activities could be reversely regulated by surface modification of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) for the colorimetric detection of UO22+. Tph-BT exhibits excellent oxidase activity and weak peroxidase activity, and it is surprising to find that the UO22+-specific DNA aptamer can significantly inhibit the oxidase activity while greatly enhancing the peroxidase activity. The present UO22+ interacts with the DNA aptamer to form secondary structures and detaches from the surface of Tph-BT, thereby restoring the enzymatic activity of Tph-BT. Based on the reversed regulation effects of the DNA aptamer on the two types of enzymatic activities of Tph-BT, a novel "off-on" and "on-off" sensing platform can be constructed for the colorimetric analysis of UO22+. This research demonstrates that ssDNA can effectively regulate the different types of enzymatic activities of single COFs and achieve the sensitive and selective colorimetric analysis of radionuclides by the naked eye.

Abstract
The prosperous advancement of supramolecular chemistry has motivated us to construct supramolecular hybrid materials with integrated functionalities. Herein, we report an innovative type of macrocycle-strutted coordination microparticle (MSCM) using pillararenes as the struts and "pockets", which performs unique activities of fluorescence-monitored photosensitization and substrate-selective photocatalytic degradation. Prepared via a convenient one-step solvothermal method, MSCM showcases the incorporation of supramolecular hybridization and macrocycles, endowed with well-ordered spherical architectures, superior photophysical properties, and photosensitizing capacity, where a self-reporting fluorescence response is exhibited upon photoinduced generation of multiple reactive oxygen species. Importantly, photocatalytic behaviors of MSCM show marked divergence toward three different substrates and reveal pronounced substrate-selective catalytic mechanisms, attributing to the variety in the affinity of substrates toward MSCM surfaces and pillararene cavities. This study brings new insight into the design of supramolecular hybrid systems with integrated properties and further exploration of functional macrocycle-based materials.

Abstract
We derive design principles for the assembly of rectangular tetramines into Zn8 L6 pseudo-cubic coordination cages. Because of the rectangular, as opposed to square, geometry of the ligand panels, and the possibility of either Δ or Λ handedness of each metal center at the eight corners of the pseudo-cube, many different cage diastereomers are possible. Each of the six tetra-aniline subcomponents investigated in this work assembled with zinc(II) and 2-formylpyridine in acetonitrile into a single Zn8 L6 pseudo-cube diastereomer, however. Each product corresponded to one of four diastereomeric configurations, with T, Th , S6 or D3 symmetry. The preferred diastereomer for a given tetra-aniline subcomponent was shown to be dependent on its aspect ratio and conformational flexibility. Analysis of computationally modeled individual faces or whole pseudo-cubes provided insight as to why the observed diastereomers were favored.

Abstract
Herein, we have synthesized a novel kind of gold nanoclusters decorated iron-cobalt oxide nanosheets (His-AuNCs@FeCo-ONSs) assembled by electrostatic interaction, which possessed both outstanding peroxidase-like activity and fluorescence property. Taking advantage of our bifunctional hybrid nanozyme and enzyme cascade reactions, a sensitive dual-mode (colorimetric/fluorescent) detection method for α-glucosidase was constructed. The detection limits for α-glucosidase were 2.2 U/L and 3.3 U/L in fluorometric and colorimetric mode, respectively. This method not only provides high sensitivity, but also can correct itself to improve the accuracy of analysis due to the dual-response signals. Furthermore, it was employed for α-glucosidase determination in real samples and screening of α-glucosidase inhibitors.

Abstract
Regioselective stepwise phenylation of 4,7-diarylbenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole fluorophores has been achieved through a facile one-pot, three-step synthetic strategy involving sequential borylation, hydroxydechlorination and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. Crucial to the selectivity was the use of BCl3 to regioselectively install a boronic acid group in the ortho-position of only one of the diaryl groups. The subsequent introduction of ortho-phenyl groups through Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling gave rise to twisted structures with hindered intramolecular rotation, providing a structural lever with which the fluorophore absorption and emission properties could be adjusted.

Herein, nanozyme-like organic cages are reported by engineering air-stable radicals into the skeleton upon photoinduced electron transfer. The generation of radicals is accompanied by single-crystal structural transformation and exhibits superior stability over six months in air. Impressively, the radicals throughout the cage skeleton can mimic the peroxidase of natural enzymes to decompose H2 O2 into OH· and facilitate oxidation reactions. Furthermore, an integrated catalyst by encapsulating Au clusters (glucose oxidase mimics) into the cage has been developed, in which the dual active sites (Au cluster and radical) are spatially isolated and can work as cascade nanozymes to prominently promote the enzyme-like tandem reaction via a substrate channeling effect.

Abstract
The current scenario of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and pandemics caused by viruses makes research in the area of antibacterial and antiviral materials and surfaces more urgent than ever. In this regard, salicylideneimine based tetracoordinate boron-containing organic compounds are emerging as a new class of photosensitizers for singlet oxygen generation. However, the inherent inability of small organic molecules to be processed limits their potential use in functional coatings. Here we show the synthesis of a novel polymer functionalized with diiodosalicylideneimine-boron difluoride (PEI-BF2) and its utility for surface coating inside glass vials via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. The multilayer thin films are characterized using AFM and UV-Vis spectroscopy and the resultant coatings display excellent stability. The multilayer coating could be activated using visible light, and owing to the photocatalytic activity of the incorporated PEI-BF2, the surface coating is able to generate singlet oxygen efficiently upon light irradiation. Further, the multilayer coated surfaces exhibit remarkable antimicrobial activity towards both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria under a variety of conditions. Thus, owing to the simple synthesis and the convenient methodology adopted for the preparation of multilayer coatings, the material reported here could pave the way for the development of sunlight activated large area self-sterile surfaces.

Abstract
Polyadenine-stabilized Au nanoparticles (pA-AuNPs) reveal dual nanozyme catalytic activities toward the H2O2-mediated oxidation of dopamine to aminochrome and toward the aerobic oxidation of glucose to gluconic acid and H2O2. The conjugation of a dopamine-binding aptamer (DBA) to the pA-AuNPs yields aptananozyme structures catalyzing simultaneously the H2O2-mediated oxidation of dopamine to aminochrome through the aerobic oxidation of glucose. A set of aptananozymes consisting of DBA conjugated through the 5'- or 3'-end directly or spacer bridges to pA-AuNPs were synthesized. The set of aptananozymes revealed enhanced catalytic activities toward the H2O2-catalyzed oxidation of dopamine to dopachrome, as compared to the separated pA-AuNPs and DBA constituents, and structure-function relationships within the series of aptananozymes were demonstrated. The enhanced catalytic function of the aptananozymes was attributed to the concentration of the dopamine at the catalytic interfaces by means of aptamer-dopamine complexes. The dual catalytic activities of aptananozymes were further applied to design bioreactors catalyzing the effective aerobic oxidation of dopamine in the presence of glucose. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the aptananozymes generate reactive oxygen species. Accordingly, the AS1411 aptamer, recognizing the nucleolin receptor associated with cancer cells, was conjugated to the pA-AuNPs, yielding a nanozyme for the chemodynamic treatment of cancer cells. The AS1411 aptamer targets the aptananozyme to the cancer cells and facilitates the selective permeation of the nanozyme into the cells. Selective cytotoxicity toward MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells (ca. 70% cell death) as compared to MCF-10A epithelial cells (ca. 2% cell death) is demonstrated.

Abstract
Shifting a triangle-square equilibrium in one direction is an important problem in supramolecular self-assembly. Reaction of a benzothiadiazole-based diimidazole donor with a cis-Pt(II) acceptor yielded an equilibrium mixture of a triangle ([C18H24N10O6S1Pt1]3≡ PtMCT) and a square ([C18H24N10O6S1Pt1]4≡ PtMCS). We report here the shifting of such equilibrium toward a triangle using a guest (pyrene aldehyde, G1). While both benzothiadiazole and pyrene aldehyde can form reactive oxygen species (ROS) in organic solvents, their therapeutic use in water is restricted due to aqueous insolubility. The enhanced water solubility of the benzothiadiazole unit and G1 by macrocycle formation and host-guest complexation, respectively, enabled enhanced ROS generation by the host-guest complex (G1' ⊂ PtMCT) in water (G1' = hydrated form of G1). The guest-encapsulated metallacycle (G1' ⊂ PtMCT) has shown synergistic antibacterial activity compared to the mixture of macrocycles upon white-light irradiation due to enhanced ROS generation. The mechanism for such enhanced activity was established by measuring the oxidative stress and relative internalization of PtMCs and G1' ⊂ PtMCT.

Abstract
The development of superior functional enzyme mimics (nanozymes) is essential for practical applications, including point-of-care diagnostics, biotechnological applications, biofuels, and environmental remediation. Nanozymes with the ability to control their catalytic activity in response to external fuels offer functionally valuable platforms mimicking nonequilibrium systems in nature. Herein, we fabricated a supramolecular coordination bonding-based dynamic vesicle that exhibits multienzymatic activity. The supramolecular nanozyme shows effective laccase-like catalytic activity with a KM value better than the native enzyme and higher stability in harsh conditions. Besides, the nanostructure demonstrates an efficient peroxidase-like activity with NADH peroxidase-like properties. Generation of luminescence from luminol and oxidation of dopamine are efficiently catalyzed by the nanozyme with high sensitivity, which is useful for point-of-care detections. Notably, the active nanozyme exhibits dynamic laccase-mimetic activity in response to pH variation, which has never been explored before. While a neutral/high pH leads to the self-assembly, a low pH disintegrates the assembled nanostructures and consequently turns off the nanozyme activity. Altogether, the self-assembled Cu2+-based vesicular nanostructure presents a pH-fueled dissipative system demonstrating effective temporally controlled multienzymatic activity.

Abstract
The peroxidase-like catalytic activity of various nanozymes was extensively applied in various fields. In this study, we have demonstrated the preparation of Fe-doped MoS2 (Fe@MoS2) nanomaterials with enhanced peroxidase-like activity of MoS2 in a co-catalytic pathway. In view of Fenton reaction, the peroxidase-like Fe@MoS2 nanozyme prompted the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to a reactive hydroxyl radical (·OH). The efficient decomposition of H2O2 in the presence of Fe@MoS2 has been employed toward the antibacterial activity and detoxification of mustard gas simulant. The combined effect of Fe@MoS2 and H2O2 showed remarkable antibacterial activity against the drug-resistant bacterial strain methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with the use of minimal concentration of H2O2. Fe@MoS2 was further applied for the detoxification of the chemical warfare agent sulfur mustard simulant, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide, by selective conversion to the nontoxic sulfoxide. This work demonstrates the development of a hybrid nanozyme and its environmental remediation from harmful chemicals to microbes.

Abstract
Ruthenium (Ru) complexes are developed as latent emissive photosensitizers for cancer and pathogen photodiagnosis and therapy. Nevertheless, most existing Ru complexes are limited as photosensitizers in terms of short excitation and emission wavelengths. Herein, we present an emissive Ru(II) metallacycle (herein referred to as 1) that is excited by 808-nm laser and emits at a wavelength of ∼1,000 nm via coordination-driven self-assembly. Metallacycle 1 exhibits good optical penetration (∼7 mm) and satisfactory reactive oxygen species production properties. Furthermore, 1 shows broad-spectrum antibacterial activity (including against drug-resistant Escherichia coli) as well as low cytotoxicity to normal mammalian cells. In vivo studies reveal that 1 is employed in precise, second near-infrared biomedical window fluorescent imaging-guided, photo-triggered treatments in Staphylococcus aureus-infected mice models, with negligible side effects. This work thus broads the applications of supramolecular photosensitizers through the strategy of lengthening their wavelengths.

Abstract
Exploring antibacterial nanomaterials with excellent catalytic antibacterial properties has always been a hot research topic. However, the construction of nanomaterials with robust antibacterial activity at the atomic level remains a great challenge. Here a fully-exposed Pd cluster atomically-dispersed on nanodiamond-graphene (Pdn /ND@G) with excellent catalytic antibacterial properties is reported. The fully-exposed Pd cluster nanozyme provides atomically-dispersed Pd cluster sites that facilitate the activation of oxygen. Notably, the oxidase-like catalytic performance of the fully-exposed Pd cluster nanozyme is much higher than that of Pd single-atom oxidase mimic, Pd nanoparticles oxidase mimic and even the previously reported palladium-based oxidase mimics. Under the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the Pd cluster sites can efficiently catalyze the decomposition of oxygen to generate reactive oxygen species, resulting in strong antibacterial properties. This research provides a valuable insight to the design of novel oxidase mimic and antibacterial nanomaterial.
