Abstract
Considering a growing, aging population, the need for interventions to improve the healthspan in aging are tantamount. Diet and nutrition are important determinants of the aging trajectory. Plant-based diets that provide bioactive phytonutrients may contribute to offsetting hallmarks of aging and reducing the risk of chronic disease. Researchers now advocate moving toward a positive model of aging which focuses on the preservation of functional abilities, rather than an emphasis on the absence of disease. This narrative review discusses the modulatory effect of nutrition on aging, with an emphasis on promising phytonutrients, and their potential to influence cellular, organ and functional parameters in aging. The literature is discussed against the backdrop of a recent conceptual framework which describes vitality, intrinsic capacity and expressed capacities in aging. This aims to better elucidate the role of phytonutrients on vitality and intrinsic capacity in aging adults. Such a review contributes to this new scientific perspective-namely-how nutrition might help to preserve functional abilities in aging, rather than purely offsetting the risk of chronic disease.

Abstract
Phytochemical screening of four commercial products containing Salvia officinalis was carried out. Total phenolic content was estimated spectrophotometrically through the use of the Folin-Ciocalteau method, flavonoid content was measured through the use of aluminum chloride and 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine colorimetric assays, and isoflavones and α/β-thujones were analyzed through the use of high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) and the gas chromatographic method. The analyses revealed the absence of thujones and isoflavones (i.e., genistin, genistein, and daidzein) in all four different extracts. The content of polyphenolic compounds varied among the samples, with the extract T being richer in both polyphenols and flavonoids than the other products by 1.8-3.2 and 1.4-4.0 times, respectively (p-value < 0.05). These results highlight the importance of quality control in salvia-based products since a thujone-free extract rich in polyphenols and flavonoids could be a good candidate for further preclinical and clinical studies to identify an effective herbal approach suitable for the long-term therapy of menopausal symptoms.

Abstract
Centaurea pichleri subsp. pichleri, Conyza canadensis, and Jasminum fruticans are traditionally used plants grown in Turkey. Methanol extracts were obtained from these plants and pharmacological activity studies and phytochemical analyses were carried out. To evaluate the phytochemical composition, spectrophotometric and chromatographic techniques were used. The extracts were evaluated for antioxidant activity by DPPH●, ABTS●+ radical scavenging, and FRAP assays. The cytotoxic effects of the extracts were investigated on DU145 prostate cancer and A549 lung cancer cell lines. The anti-inflammatory effects of extracts were investigated on the NO amount, TNF-α, IFN-γ, and PGE 2 levels in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated Raw 264.7 cells. The richest extract in terms of phenolic compounds (98.19 ± 1.64 mgGAE/gextract) and total flavonoids (21.85 ± 0.64 mgCA/gextract) was identified as C. pichleri subsp. pichleri methanol extract. According to antioxidant activity determinations, the C. pichleri subsp. pichleri extract was found to be the most active extract. Finally, the C. pichleri subsp. pichleri methanol extract was revealed to be the most effective inhibitor of viability in the cytotoxic activity investigation, and the extract with the best anti-inflammatory action. The findings point to C. pichleri subsp. pichleri as a promising source of bioactive compounds in the transition from natural sources to industrial uses, such as new medications, cosmeceuticals, and nutraceuticals.

Abstract
The potential applications of Achillea species in various industries have encouraged the examination of their phytochemical components along with their biological potential. In the present study, phenolic contents and essential oil compositions together with the in vitro biological activities of the aerial parts from Achillea biebersteinii Afan. and Achillea millefolium subsp. millefolium Afan. collected from Turkey were evaluated. Different solvent extracts (n-hexane, chloroform, methanol, water) were prepared and their antimicrobial, anticholinesterase, and antioxidant activities were studied. The LC-MS/MS results revealed the presence of 16 different phenolic compounds, including chlorogenic acid, rutin, quercetin, and luteolin glycosides, in methanolic extracts. According to GC-FID and GC/MS results, the primary components of the oils were identified as 1,8-cineole (32.5%), piperitone (14.4%), and camphor (13.7%) in A. biebersteinii and 1,8-cineole (12.3%) and β-eudesmol (8.9%) in A. millefolium subsp. millefolium. The infusion and methanolic extracts of both species were found to be rich in their total phenolic content as well as their antioxidant and anticholinesterase activity. In contrast, the n-hexane and chloroform extracts of both species showed strong antimicrobial activity with MIC values ranging from 15 to 2000 μg/mL. Our findings suggest that the investigated Achillea species could be evaluated as potent natural agents, and further studies into the promising extracts are needed.

Abstract
The Lime Basra (Citrus aurantifolia Linn., Rutaceae) plant also known as dried lime, and Limoo Omani, is used both as a spice in meals and as an herbal tea in the treatment of some diseases in the Middle East. It was aimed to determine the biological activity screening of the 70% methanol, ethanol extracts and infusion which were prepared from dried fruits. 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH●) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS+●) radical scavenging activities, ferric reducing activity, cytotoxicity on A 549, MCF 7 and L929 cell lines and α-amylase inhibitory effects were determined. According to the results, 70% methanol extract was more active in antioxidant activity tests and ethanol extract was more active in cytotoxicity tests. Interestingly both 70% methanol and ethanol extracts were found to have potent hypoglycemic activity. The present findings shed light on the fact that it is important to research and scientifically evaluate plants with traditional medicinal use.

Abstract
Clinopodium vulgare L. (Lamiaceae) was used in the traditional Bulgarian medicine for treatment of wounds, diabetes and gastric ulcers. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of the extract (CVE) and fractions from C. vulgare (CV) using DPPH, ABTS and FRAP methods. Enzyme inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase, α-glucosidase and α-amylase was also investigated. Rosmarinic acid was used as a positive control. The fraction CV3 demonstrated the highest radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 0.02 mg/ml (DPPH) and 0.0002 mg/ml (ABTS), as well as the strongest ferric reducing potential (FRAP) of 0.89 mM TE/mg dw. The crude aqueous-methanol extract of C. vulgare also showed high activity with IC50 values of 0.05 mg/ml (DPPH), 0.04 mg/ml (ABTS) and 0.89 mM TE/mg dw (FRAP). Moreover, CV3 demonstrated moderate α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory potential.

Abstract
The influence of harvest period and drying method of Salvia officinalis L. leaves on the content of essential oils, polyphenols and antioxidant properties was investigated. Sage leaves were collected twice during plant blossoming (in June and July) and dried traditionally in natural conditions and at 35 °C. Antioxidant activity was assayed in methanol-acetone extracts and infusions of dried leaves with the use of free radical scavenging activity (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) technique. Total phenolic content in extracts as well as in infusions was determined by the means of Folin-Ciocalteu method. Based on the LC/MS analysis, the polyphenol compounds present in both extracts and in infusions were identified. The extracts contained more polyphenols and were characterized by higher antioxidant activity than infusions. In the extracts significant amount of ferulic acid was found, which was influenced both by the harvest period and drying method. The amount of ferulic acid found in extracts obtained from the June leaves dried traditionally was three times lower (6.185 μg/g DW) than in extracts from July leaves dried in the same conditions. Harvest period had a significant effect on the essential oils' content, leaves collected in July contained 15% more oils than those collected in June.

Potential Application of Propolis Extracts to Control the Growth of Stemphylium vesicarium in “Rocha” Pear. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2020. Abstract
Stemphylium vesicarium (Wallr.) E. G. Simmons is the pathogen responsible of brown spot disease in pear and has become one of the main concerns for European pear producers. In Portugal, S. vesicarium is responsible for significant yield reduction and economic losses in “Rocha” pear (Pyrus communis L. cv Rocha) production. Considering the antimicrobial potential of propolis, the high incidence of brown spot in pears and the emergence of fungicides resistance in S. vesicarium, this study aimed to evaluate the potential of Portuguese propolis as an alternative strategy to control brown spot disease in “Rocha” pear. In vitro assays showed that propolis extracts were able to inhibit up to 90% the S. vesicarium mycelial growth. In vivo assays in artificially wounded and inoculated “Rocha” pears showed that, compared to the control, the disease incidence decreased up to 25% and the lesions diameter up to 57%, in fruits treated with propolis. Moreover, propolis seems to be more efficient in reducing the disease incidence when applied after pathogen inoculation (curative assay) than when applied before pathogen inoculation (prophylactic assay). Thus, the results suggest that propolis extracts have potential to be applied as part of an integrated approach for the control of brown spot of pear.

Abstract
PURPOSE Little is known about the pharmacological effects of the phenolic compounds of Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium). This Mediterranean aromatic plant, used as a gastronomic spice and as food preservative by the food industry has been studied mainly due to its essential oil antibacterial properties, composed primarily by monoterpenes. With this work, we aimed to evaluate the effects of a phenolic extract of pennyroyal in the impairment of inflammatory processes in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) and in the potential inhibition of progression to colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS To that purpose, we evaluated the effect of pennyroyal extract administration in a model of TNBS-induced colitis in mice and further determined its effect on human colon carcinoma cell proliferation and invasion. RESULTS The phenolic extract of pennyroyal exhibited antioxidant properties in in vitro assays and administration of the extract in a rat model of carrageenan-induced paw oedema led to significant anti-inflammatory effects. Further results evidenced a beneficial effect of the phenolic extract in the attenuation of experimental colitis and a potential antiproliferative effect on cultured colon cancer cells, effects not previously described, to our knowledge. A reduction in several markers of colon inflammation was observed following administration of the extract to colitis-induced mice, including functional and histological indicators. A successful inhibition of cancer cell invasion and proliferation was also observed in in vitro studies with HT-29 cells. Furthermore, the extract also led to a reduced expression of iNOS/COX-2 in the colon of colitis-induced mice, both being crucial mediators of intestinal inflammation. CONCLUSIONS Taking into consideration the central role of inflammation in the pathophysiology of CRC and the recognised connection between inflammatory events and cancer, these results enlighten the relevance of the phenolic constituents of pennyroyal as important pharmacological sources in the investigation of new treatment options for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.

Abstract
Background: Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) encompasses both Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, known to be connected to an enlarged risk for developing colorectal cancer (CRC). Spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) is a Mediterranean plant used as an aromatic agent, and studies have mainly focused on the essential oil suggesting an anti-inflammatory activity. This work aimed to perform a preliminary screening of the in vivo anti-inflammatory effects of a spearmint phenolic extract in an acute inflammation model, in a chronic inflammation model of colitis, and also study the effects in vitro on a colon cancer model. Methods: Spearmint extract was administered to rats of a paw oedema model (induced by carrageenan) and to mice from a TNBS-induced colitis model in parallel with studies using HT-29 CRC cells. Results: Administration of the extract led to reduced paw inflammation, reduction of colon injury and inflammation, with attenuation of histological markers, and reduction of iNOS expression. It repressed the in vitro movement of HT-29 cells in a wound healing assay. Conclusions: These findings suggest that spearmint extract exhibits acute and chronic anti-inflammatory activity and is able to inhibit migration of cancer cells, suggesting a potential role in the supplementary therapy of IBD patients.

Abstract
Liver diseases such as hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma are one of the major health challenges in the world and many conditions such as inadequate nutrition, viral infection, ethanol and drug abuse, xenobiotic exposure, and metabolic diseases have been implicated in the development and progression of liver diseases. Several factors including lipid peroxidation, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), peroxynitrite formation, complement factors and proinflammatory mediators, such as cytokines and chemokines, are involved in hepatic diseases. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a natural phenolic compound found mainly in the family Lamiaceae consisting of several medicinal plants, herbs and spices. Several biological activities have been reported for RA and these include antioxidant properties as a ROS scavenger and lipid peroxidation inhibitor, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and antiangiogenic among others. This review is aimed at discussing the effects of RA on the liver, highlighting its hepatoprotective potential and the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
The phenolic profile and antioxidant activity of Cape Verde's Artemisia gorgonum Webb and Hyptis pectinata (L.) Poit. infusions before and after in vitro simulation of the gastrointestinal digestion were determined. The LC-UV/DAD fingerprinting analysis allowed the identification of 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid, chlorogenic acid, 3,5 dicaffeoylquinic acid, 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid and other caffeoylquinic acids derivatives on A. gorgonum infusion, and of caffeoylquinic acid and quercetin derivatives on H. pectinata infusion. Despite some decrease in the chromatographic area of several peaks, no relevant qualitative alterations on the chromatographic profile were observed between the digested and undigested herbal infusions. Results obtained showed a decrease on the antioxidant capacity of both tested herbal infusions after the in vitro digestion. This decrease was more pronounced for H. pectinata than for A. gorgonum and was also more pronounced regarding the radical scavenging capacity than regarding the reducing capacity. After complete digestion the superoxide anion and the DPPH-radical scavenging capacities decreased ≈ 43 and 75% for H. pectinata and ≈ 31 and 70% for A. gorgonum. Despite the observed differences before and after simulated gastrointestinal digestion, both infusions still had antioxidant activity at the end of this process. Thus, the antioxidant potential of A. gorgonum and H. pectinata infusions from Cape Verde, prepared as traditionally used, seems to be kept in some extend throughout the digestive system.

Abstract
This work reports a portable distance-based detection paper device that has a thermometer-like shape for rapid, instrument-free determination of antioxidant activity using a nanoceria assay. The assay is based on partial reduction of cerium ion from Ce4+ to Ce3+ on nanoceria deposited along the detection channel by antioxidants present in food, giving highly reactive oxidation products. Either these products or the parent antioxidant compounds could then bind to the OH-rich ceria nanoparticles and generate charge transfer ceria-antioxidant complexes resulting in a yellow to brown color change. The distance of the brown color on the detection channel is directly proportional to antioxidant activity, and can be easily measured using an integrated ruler without the need of any external sophisticated instrument for detection. The paper sensor has been studied for the analysis of common antioxidants and its performance was validated against traditional antioxidant assays for 11 tea sample analyses. Using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient method, the antioxidant activity of tea samples obtained from the paper device correlated with the traditional assay at the 95% confidence level. The developed sensor provided a high recovery and tolerance limit and was stable for 50 days both when stored at ambient and low temperature (6 and -20°C). The results demonstrated that the developed paper device is an alternative to allow for fast, simple, instrument-free, cheap, portable and high-throughput screening of antioxidant activity analysis in real samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, it has been demonstrated the inhibitory effect of some plant species on the angiotensin-converting enzyme and rosmarinic acid is a prominent constituent of these species. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE This study was carried out to verify the effect of rosmarinic acid on blood pressure through inhibitory activity on angiotensin-converting enzyme in rats. STUDY DESIGN The arterial hypertension was promoted using 2-kidneys 1-clip model in rats. The potential inhibitory rosmarinic acid effect on angiotensin-converting enzyme activity was compared with captopril actions by analyzing in vivo blood pressure dose-response curves to angiotensin I and bradykinin. The in vitro plasma angiotensin-converting enzyme activity was measured by fluorimetry using the substrate Abz-FRK(Dnp)P-OH substrate. In addition, dosages of nitrite/nítrate analysis were carried out. RESULTS (1) rosmarinic acid caused systolic blood pressure dose-dependent decrease in hypertensive rats; (2) The angiotensin I dose-response curves demonstrated that rosmarinic acid promotes minor changes in systolic blood pressure only in the hypertensive group; (3) The bradykinin dose-response curves showed that both rosmarinic acid and captopril promoted a systolic blood pressure reduction, but only the captopril effect was significant; (4) The angiotensin-converting enzyme activity in rat lung tissue was inhibited by the rosmarinic acid in a dose dependent manner; (5) The analysis of nitrite/nítrate plasma concentrations showed no significant difference among the experimental groups. CONCLUSION The rosmarinic acid is effective in reducing blood pressure, selectively, only in hypertensive animals. The rosmarinic acid (173µM) promoted almost a 98.96% reduction on angiotensin-converting enzyme activity.

Abstract
CONTEXT Pelargonium endlicherianum Fenzl. (Geraniaceae) roots and flowers are traditionally used in Turkey as a decoction treatment against intestinal parasites. Neither the chemical composition nor the potential bioactivity of the plant roots has been studied before. OBJECTIVES The phenolic content and effects of P. endlicherianum root extracts on antioxidant enzyme levels on A549 cells were studied for the first time. MATERIALS AND METHODS The chemical composition was analyzed via spectrophotometric and chromatographic (HPLC MS/MS and HPLC) techniques. The antioxidant activity was determined at different concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 2 mg/mL using DPPH• and ABTS•+ radical scavenging activity, β-carotene-linoleic acid co-oxidation assay, protection of 2-deoxyribose and bovine brain-derived phospholipids against a hydroxyl radical-mediated degradation assay. Glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities were also studied as well as the effects of the extracts on nitric oxide levels on IL-1β stimulated A549 cells. RESULTS The key parameters for the most active ethyl acetate extract included the following: DPPH• IC50: 0.23 mg/mL, TEAC/ABTS: 2.17 mmol/L Trolox, reduction: 0.41 mmol/g AsscE, and protection of lipid peroxidation IC50: 0.05 mg/mL. Furthermore, the ethyl acetate extract increased the SOD level significantly compared to control group (4.48 U/mL) at concentrations of 100 and 200 μg/mL SOD, 5.50 and 5.67 U/mL, respectively. Apocynin was identified as the major component, and the ethyl acetate fraction was found to be rich in phenolic compounds. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Pelargonium endlicherianum root extracts displayed antioxidant activity and increased the antioxidant enzyme levels in IL-1β stimulated A549 cells, while decreasing the NO levels.

Abstract
Natural products have gained considerable interests because of their use in some industrial areas including nutrition, cosmetic, pharmacy, and medicine. Salvia fruticosa M. (Lamiaceae) is known for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiproliferative activities. Phase I xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes, CYP1A2 and CYP2E1, produce reactive metabolites which are eliminated by the action of phase II enzymes, NQO1, GPx, and glutathione S-transferases (GSTs). In this study, in vitro modulatory effects of S. fruticosa and its major phenolic compound rosmarinic acid (RA) on CYP1A2, CYP2E1, NQO1, GPx, and GSTm1 mRNA expressions and enzyme activities of GPx and GSTs were investigated in HT-29 cells. An mRNA expression analysis revealed that CYP1A2 and CYP2E1 levels were decreased while those of NQO1, GPx, and GSTm1 increased after S. fruticosa and RA treatments. In parallel to gene expressions, enzyme activities of GPx and GSTs by S. fruticosa increased 1.68- and 1.48-fold, respectively. Moreover, RA increased GPx and GSTs activities 1.67- and 1.94-fold, respectively. The results of this preliminary study show that metabolism of xenobiotics may be altered due to changes in the expression and activity of the investigated enzymes by S. fruticosa.

Abstract
The thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay is widely used to measure lipid oxidation and antioxidant activity in food and physiological systems. However, there has been no review (to our knowledge) that focuses exclusively on this test. This review presents an overview of the current use of the TBARS test in food and physiological systems, before looking at the various ways in which the assay is used in studies on antioxidant activity. As an antioxidant assay, the TBARS test may lack acceptable reproducibility, and long reaction times may preclude its adoption as a rapid screening method. Despite these potential limitations, there are features of the TBARS test that make it useful as a complement to popular screening tests such as Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity. This review concludes with proposals for development of the TBARS test so that it can be used as a rapid and robust antioxidant assay.

Abstract
The chemical profile, cytotoxic and apoptotic effect, and antioxidant activity were determined of ethanolic extracts of Vitex agnus-castus L. (chaste tree). Ripened fruits and fruitless aerial parts were extracted with ethanol, and the chemical characterization of the extracts was determined by LC/ESI-MS-MS. Twelve compounds were tentatively identified in the extracts. The dose-dependent cytotoxic effects of the extracts were tested on C6, A549 and MCF-7 cells by using MTT assay; inhibition of DNA synthesis, and apoptotic and caspase-3 activation effects of the extracts were determined. The potential antioxidant activities of the extracts were evaluated by in vitro methods such as DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity, reducing power and β-carotene bleaching assays. The fruit extract showed noticeable cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 cells with an IC50 value of 88 μg/mL. Both extracts showed similar DPPH scavenging activity comparably with that of the standard.

In this context, chemical and biological investigation of ferns and lycophytes occurring in Brazil is an approach adopted by our research group aiming at discovering bioactive molecules acting on neurodegeneration targets. In the present study, rosmarinic acid (RA) isolated from Blechnum brasiliense showed an in vitro multifunctional profile characterized by antioxidant effects, and monoamine oxidases (MAO-A and MAO-B) and catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) inhibition. RA showed antioxidant effects against hydroxyl (HO(•)) and nitric oxide (NO) radicals (IC50 of 29.4 and 140 μM, respectively), and inhibition of lipid peroxidation (IC50 of 19.6 μM). In addition, RA inhibited MAO-A, MAO-B and COMT enzymes with IC50 values of 50.1, 184.6 and 26.7 μM, respectively. The MAO-A modulation showed a non-time-dependent profile, suggesting a reversible mechanism of inhibition. Structural insights on RA interactions with MAO-A and COMT were investigated by molecular docking. Finally, RA (up to 5 mM) demonstrated no cytotoxicity on polymorphonuclear rat cells. Taken together, our results suggest that RA may be exploited as a template for the development of new antioxidant molecules possessing additional MAO and COMT inhibition effects to be further investigated on in vitro and in vivo models of neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in both men and women. The present study is an effort to unravel the anticarcinogenic effects of rosmarinic acid (RA) in 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced rat colon carcinogenesis. Administration of DMH induces multiple tumors in the rat colon, which mimics human colon cancer. METHODS Male Wistar rats were divided into six groups and fed a high-fat diet. Group 1 served as control, group 2 rats were given RA [5 mg/kg body weight (b.w.)] orally every day for a total period of 30 weeks, and groups 3-6 were given weekly injections of DMH (20 mg/kg b.w. subcutaneous) once a week in the groin for the first 15 weeks. In addition to DMH, groups 4-6 received RA at a dose of 5 mg/kg b.w. during the initiation and postinitiation stages, and also throughout the entire study period. Colon tissues were examined histologically; further, the extent of oxidative stress was assessed by measuring lipid peroxidation and antioxidant levels in the colonic mucosa of rats. RESULTS Macroscopic and microscopic tumors were identified in all the groups that received DMH. The results revealed that supplementation with RA significantly inhibited the tumor formation and tumor multiplicity in DMH-treated rats. RA supplementation to DMH-administered rats significantly reduced the cell proliferation markers, namely, argyrophilic nucleolar organizing regions as well as proliferative cell nuclear antigen labeling index. In addition, RA supplementation reduces the expressions of tumor necrosis factor-α, interlukin-6, and cyclooxygenase-2, and modulates the expression of p65. CONCLUSIONS The above findings clearly underline the chemopreventive efficacy of RA against DMH-induced colon carcinogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES In Asia, various medicinal plants have been used as the primary sources in the health care regimen for thousands of years. In recent decades, various studies have investigated the biological activity and potential medicinal value of the medicinal plants. In this study, 100 methanol extracts from 98 plant species were evaluated for their biological activities. MATERIALS/METHODS The research properties, including 1,1-diphenyl-2-pic-rylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, α-glucosidase and α-tyrosinase inhibitory effects, anti-inflammatory activity, and anticancer activity were evaluated for the selected extracts. RESULTS Fifteen of the extracts scavenged more than 90% of the DPPH radical. Among the extracts, approximately 20 extracts showed a strong inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase, while most had no effect on α-tyrosinase. In addition, 52% of the extracts showed low toxicity to normal cells, and parts of the extracts exhibited high anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities on the murine macrophage cell (RAW 264.7) and human colon cancer cell (HT-29) lines, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our findings may contribute to further nutrition and pharmacological studies. Detailed investigations of the outstanding samples are currently underway.

Abstract
In this study, dried elderberry fruits growing wild in Turkey were macerated using different solvents and an infusion was prepared according to traditional methods. All extracts were investigated for their total phenolic content, total monomeric anthocyanins, qualitative-quantitative determination of cyanidin-3-glucoside (by HPLC-UV analysis), anthocyanin compositions (by LC/MS-MS), free radical scavenging activity (DPPH and ABTS) and inhibition of β-carotene/linoleic acid co-oxidation. An extract with 70% ethanol was found to be richer in cyanidin-3-glucoside when compared to the other extracts. The infusion was found to be as rich as the 70% ethanol extract. Ethanol and acetone extracts (both 70%) were found to be more active in the free radical activity and β-carotene bleaching assays. Water extract showed good ABTS radical scavenging activity when compared with ascorbic acid.

Abstract
CONTEXT Despite several pharmacological applications of Rosmarinus officinalis L. (Lamiaceae), studies on its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties have been scarce. OBJECTIVE The aim of this work was to use in vivo models to evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of the aqueous extracts obtained from leaves (AEL) and stems (AES) of Rosmarinus officinalis, as well as its isolated compound--rosmarinic acid (RA). We also prepared and assessed the acetyl ester derivative of RA. MATERIALS AND METHODS The analgesic activity was evaluated using abdominal constriction and formalin tests. For the evaluation of the anti-inflammatory effects, carrageenin-induced paw edema in rats were used. The extracts were used at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg kg⁻¹ compounds were tested at 10, 20 and 40 mg kg⁻¹. RESULTS Orally administered AEL, AES and RA were not significantly active at any of the doses tested during the abdominal constriction test; the acetyl ester derivative of RA displayed significant analgesic activity. In the carrageenin-induced paw edema assay, the acetyl derivative of RA at all the tested doses produced significant anti-inflammatory effects and reduced the number of paw licks in the second phase of the formalin test. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION The results suggest that the analgesic effects of the acetyl derivative of RA operate via a peripheral-mediated mechanism. The acetyl ester derivative of RA is potentially applicable as a new lead compound for the management of pain and inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increase in atmospheric CO(2) concentration caused by climate change and agricultural practices is likely to affect biota by producing changes in plant growth, allocation and chemical composition. This study was conducted to evaluate the combined effect of the application of salicylic acid (SA, at two levels: 0 and 10-3 M) and CO(2) enrichment (at two levels: 400 and 800 μmol·mol-1) on the production and antioxidant activities of anthocyanin, flavonoids and isoflavonoids from two Malaysian ginger varieties, namely Halia Bentong and Halia Bara. METHODS High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode array detection and mass spectrometry was employed to identify and quantify the flavonoids and anthocyanins in the ginger extracts. The antioxidant activity of the leaf extracts was determined by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) assays. The substrate specificity of chalcone synthase, the key enzyme for flavonoid biosynthesis, was investigated using the chalcone synthase (CHS) assay. RESULTS CO(2) levels of 800 μmol·mol-1 significantly increased anthocyanin, rutin, naringenin, myricetin, apigenin, fisetin and morin contents in ginger leaves. Meanwhile, the combined effect of SA and CO(2) enrichment enhanced anthocyanin and flavonoid production compared with single treatment effects. High anthocyanin content was observed in H Bara leaves treated with elevated CO(2) and SA. The highest chalcone synthase (CHS) activity was observed in plants treated with SA and CO(2) enrichment. Plants not treated with SA and kept under ambient CO(2) conditions showed the lowest CHS activity. The highest free radical scavenging activity corresponded to H Bara treated with SA under high CO(2) conditions, while the lowest activity corresponded to H Bentong without SA treatment and under atmospheric CO(2) levels. As the level of CO(2) increased, the DPPH activity increased. Higher TBA activity was also recorded in the extracts of H Bara treated with SA and grown under high CO(2) conditions. CONCLUSIONS The biological activities of both ginger varieties were enhanced when the plants were treated with SA and grown under elevated CO(2) concentration. The increase in the production of anthocyanin and flavonoids in plants treated with SA could be attributed to the increase in CHS activity under high CO(2) levels.

Abstract
A petroleum ether extract (PEE) and a methanolic extract (ME) of aerial parts of Salvia bicolor Desf were prepared, and their chemical compositions and antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antimicrobial activities were evaluated. GC/MS analysis of the PEE revealed the presence of 20 compounds in the unsaponifiable matter, among which β-sitosterol and β-amyrin (constituting 24.75% and 15.62%, respectively) were the main constituents, and 21 fatty acids, with linolenic acid and erucic acid being the main fatty acid constituents (21.65% and 16.65%, respectively). HPLC/MS analysis of the methanol extract for individual phenolics revealed the presence of 14 phenolic acids; protocatchuic acid was predominant (75.22 mg/g dry sample), followed by p-coumaric, gallic and synergic acids (70.27, 68.26 and 54.38 mg/g dry weight, respectively). HPLC/MS analysis of flavonoid contents revealed the presence of five flavonoid compounds, among which luteolin 7-O-glucoside and apigenin were the major constituents (120.25 mg/100 g dry sample and 88.48 mg/100g dry sample, respectively). The antioxidant activities of both extracts were evaluated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, and the total antioxidant capacity was determined in terms of GAE (gallic acid equivalents). Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities were evaluated using the rat paw edema and hot plate testing methods, respectively. The antimicrobial activities of both the PEE and ME were examined by means of the disk-diffusion method. The Salvia bicolor PEE and ME exhibited significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties, in addition to antimicrobial effects against the selected microorganisms.

Abstract
Stachys lavandulifolia Vahl. subsp. lavandulifolia (Lamiaceae) is widely used in south Anatolia as a herbal tea. It is used for the treatment of gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders. Constituents of the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation were analyzed both by GC-FID and GC/MS, simultaneously. Thirty-seven compounds representing 98.3% of the oil were characterized. β-Phellandrene (27%), α-pinene (18.5%) and germacrene-D (13%) were found as major components of the oil. Anticandidal, antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the oil and the prepared infusion were evaluated using several methods. The oil exhibited good inhibitory activity on Candida tropicalis (MIC 0.094 mg/mL). Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium growths were also inhibited by the oil at a concentration of 0.375 mg/mL. The prepared infusion of the flowering aerial parts showed weak antimicrobial effects against all the tested microorganisms, but demonstrated a remarkably radical scavenging activity (IC50: 3.9 μg/mL).

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the most common skin diseases, and its incidence is increasing in industrialized countries. Furthermore, the epicutaneous application of a hapten, such as 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB), evokes an AD-like lesion in NC/Nga mice under specific pathogen-free (SPF) conditions. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a secondary metabolite that is frequently found in herbs, and has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-microbial effects. In this study, we studied whether RA is an effective treatment against DNFB-induced AD-like skin lesions in NC/Nga mice. RA at 1 or 5 μM was found to suppress the productions of interferon (IFN)-γ and interleukin (IL)-4 significantly by activated CD4(+) T cells. Furthermore, an intraperitoneal injection of RA at 10 or 50 mg/kg significantly inhibited skin lesion development and ear thickness and total serum IgE level increases in DNFB-treated NC/Nga mice. In addition, intraperitoneal administered RA at 10 or 50 mg/kg significantly inhibited the infiltrations of CD4(+) T, CD8(+) T, and mast cells into DNFB-induced skin lesions in NC/Nga mice. This study suggests that RA suppresses the development of AD-like dermatitis in DNFB-treated NC/Nga mice by reducing IFN-γ and IL-4 production by activated T cells and total serum IgE levels.

Abstract
CONTEXT Sideritis species (Lamiaceae) are widely used as herbal tea and have been used in folk medicine for their anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, digestive, and antimicrobial activities in Turkey. Sideritis dichotoma Huter., Sideritis erythrantha Boiss. var. cedrotorum, and Sideritis vuralii H. Duman et Başer are available as commercial products in Turkey. OBJECTIVE The antiradical activities of the various solvent extracts of Sideritis species are investigated here for the first time. MATERIALS AND METHODS Plant samples were sequentially extracted with n-hexane, dichloromethane, methanol, and aqueous methanol (50%, v/v) in Soxhlet apparatus. The extracts of Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze (Theaceae) were also prepared for use as a positive control. Total phenolics, iron(III) reductive effects, and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) radical scavenging activities of the all extracts were measured colorimetrically. RESULTS The aqueous MeOH and MeOH extracts contained the highest amount of total phenols, whereas the n-hexane extract contained the lowest amounts. The polar extracts of C. sinensis showed higher antiradical activity and also iron(III) reductive effects than the Sideritis species; however, the non-polar extracts of Sideritis species were found to be more active than those from C. sinensis in the iron(III) reductive assay and in the DPPH(•) assay as well. But none of the extracts was found to be as active as with positive controls, viz., ascorbic acid, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), and Trolox. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION These results can be shown to have antioxidant activities of these Sideritis species and support the ethnopharmacological use of these Sideritis plants.

Abstract
An endemic plant of Turkey Salvia halophila Hedge (Lamiaceae) was examined for its antioxidant activity and phenolic compositions. The aerial part of S. halophila was extracted with different solvents in an order of increasing polarity such as hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and 50% methanol using a Soxhlet apparatus. Water extract was also prepared from S. halophila by reflux. All solvent fractions were investigated for their total phenolic contents, flavonoids, flavonols, qualitative-quantitative compositions, iron(III) reductive activities, free radical scavenging activities and the effect upon linoleic acid peroxidation activities. The peroxidation level was also determined by the TBA method. The results of activity tests given as IC50 values were estimated from non-linear algorithm and compared with standards via BHT, ascorbic acid, gallic acid. Polar fractions were found more active among the others in free radical activity system whereas non-polar fractions protected the peroxidation of linoleic acid. Rosmarinic acid was the most abundant component, in the extracts.

Abstract
Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a naturally occurring phenolic compound, which contributes to the beneficial and health-promoting effects of herbs, spices and medicinal plants. RA has shown several biological activities, such as hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antiangiogenic, antitumor, antidepressant, antineurodegenerative, HIV-1 inhibitory and antioxidant effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of RA to prevent chemically induced chromosome breakage or loss and primary DNA damage using the micronucleus and comet assays with V79 cells, respectively. The chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DXR; 0.5 microg ml(-1)) was used as the DNA-damaging agent. The cultures were treated with different concentrations of RA (0.28, 0.56 and 1.12 mm) alone or in combination with DXR. The results showed that RA exerted no genotoxic effect, but significantly reduced the frequency of micronuclei and the extent of DNA damage induced by DXR at the three concentrations tested. The antioxidant activity of RA might be involved in the reduction of DXR-induced DNA damage observed in the present study.

Abstract
The lipid peroxidation-inhibiting activities of aqueous methanolic extracts of eleven Salvia species (Fam. Lamiaceae) were evaluated in an enzyme-independent biological system. The total polyphenol contents and the amounts of the most abundant phenoloids of the genus, caffeic and rosmarinic acids, were also determined. The EC50 values of the extracts displayed substantial differences. All of the investigated species except S. jurisicii (EC50 191.2 μg/mL) exhibited higher activities than that of ascorbic acid (EC50 123.8 μg/mL), the reference compound. Among the studied species, S. scabiosifolia (EC50 5.4 μg/mL) demonstrated the highest effect, followed in sequence by S. dumetorum, S. transsylvanica, S. officinalis l albiflora, S. nemorosa l albiflora and S. recognita (EC50 6.5 – 10.2 μg/mL). The close correlation was confirmed between the antioxidant activities and the total phenol contents of the extracts. For caffeic and rosmarinic acids, the correlation was much weaker, indicating the important role of other polyphenols in the antioxidant activity.

Abstract
The present study was to investigate the effects of rosmarinic acid (RA) in cultured RAW264.7 cells and experimental model of sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture in rats and the potential mechanism. Results showed that RA concentration dependently down-regulated the levels of TNF-alpha, IL-6, and high-mobility group box 1 protein in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells, inhibited the IkappaB kinase pathway, and modulated nuclear factor-kappaB. Intravenous injection of RA alone or in combination with imipenem reduced cecal ligation and puncture-induced lethality in rats. In addition, serum levels of TNF-alpha, IL-6, high-mobility group box 1 protein, triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells, and endotoxin were down-regulated; in contrast, serum level of IL-10 was up-regulated. Amelioration of hemodynamics and decrease in serum enzyme activities and myeloperoxidase in lung, liver, and small intestine were also observed after RA injection. These data indicate that the antisepsis effect of RA was mediated by decreasing local and systemic levels of a wide spectrum of inflammatory mediators. This article provides the first evidence that RA has the capacity to inactivate inflammatory response in sepsis. The anti-inflammatory mechanism of RA may inhibit activation of the nuclear factor- kappaB pathway by inhibiting IkappaB kinase activity.

Abstract
Recently, research on natural antioxidants has become increasingly active in various fields. Accordingly, numerous articles on natural antioxidants, including polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamins, and volatile chemicals, have been published. Assays developed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of plants and food constituents vary. Therefore, to investigate the antioxidant activity of chemical(s), choosing an adequate assay based on the chemical(s) of interest is critical. There are two general types of assays widely used for different antioxidant studies. One is an assay associated with lipid peroxidations, including the thiobarbituric acid assay (TBA), malonaldehyde/high-performance liquid chromatography (MA/HPLC) assay, malonaldehyde/gas chromatography (MA/GC) assay, beta-carotene bleaching assay, and conjugated diene assay. Other assays are associated with electron or radical scavenging, including the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay, ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assay, ferrous oxidation-xylenol orange (FOX) assay, ferric thiocyanate (FTC) assay, and aldehyde/carboxylic acid (ACA) assay. In this review, assays used recently were selected for extended discussion, including discussion of the mechanisms underlying each assay and its application to various plants and foods.

Abstract
Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a natural phenolic compound which presents different biological activities such as antitumor, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective and cardioprotective properties. In view of its important biological activities, the study of the effects of RA on genetic material becomes relevant. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the mutagenic and/or antimutagenic potential of RA on peripheral blood cells of Swiss mice using the micronucleus assay. Three doses of RA (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight, b.w.) were used for the evaluation of its mutagenic potential. In the antimutagenicity assays, the different concentrations of RA were combined with the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DXR, 15 mg/kg b.w.). Peripheral blood samples were collected 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment for the evaluation of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MNPCEs). The results of the mutagenicity assays showed no increase in the frequency of micronuclei in animals treated with different concentrations of RA when compared to the negative controls. Treatment with different concentrations of RA combined with DXR revealed a significant reduction in the frequency of micronuclei compared to animals treated with DXR only. Although the mechanisms underlying the protective effect of RA are not completely understood, the putative antioxidant activity of RA might explain its effect on DXR mutagenicity.
