Abstract
Colorants are widely used in our daily lives to give colors to diverse chemicals and materials, including clothes, food, drugs, cosmetics, and paints. Although synthetic colorants derived from fossil fuels have been predominantly used due to their low cost, there is a growing need to replace them with natural alternatives. This shift is driven by increasing concerns over the climate crisis caused by excessive fossil fuel use, as well as health issues associated with the consumption of foods, beverages, and cosmetics containing petroleum-derived chemicals. In addition, many natural colorants show health-promoting properties such as antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Despite such advantages, natural colorants could not be readily commercialized and distributed in the market due to their low stability, limited color spectrum, and low yields from natural resources. To this end, synthetic biology approaches have been developed to efficiently produce natural colorants from renewable resources with high yields. Strategies to diversify natural colorants to produce non-natural derivatives with enhanced properties and an expanded color spectrum have been also developed. In this Review, we discuss the recent synthetic biology strategies developed for enhancing the production of natural colorants and their non-natural derivatives, together with accompanying examples. Challenges ahead and future perspectives are also discussed.

Abstract
Self-assembled bottlebrush block copolymers (BBCPs) offer a vibrant, eco-friendly alternative to traditional toxic pigments and dyes, providing vivid structural colors with significantly reduced environmental impact. Scaling up the synthesis of these polymers for practical applications has been challenging with conventional batch methods, which suffer from slow mass and heat transfer, inadequate mixing, and issues with reproducibility. Precise control over molecular weight and dispersity remains a significant challenge for achieving finely tuned color appearances. Here, we present an alternative strategy to overcome the challenges by integrating a rapid continuous flow technique with an in-line self-assembly procedure. This strategy enables the rapid, stable and large-scale synthesis of narrow-dispersed BBCPs, exceeding 2 kg/day, a significant improvement over conventional gram-scale methods. Furthermore, precise control over the degree of polymerization is achieved with an unprecedented interval accuracy of four repeat units. This level of precision enables refined color calibration in the resulting photonic pigments, effectively eliminating the need for labor-intensive and costly multiple batch syntheses.

Abstract
Genipin is a non-glycosidic iridoid isolated mainly from the fruits of Gardenia jasminoides and Genipa americana. It is the active ingredient in extracts from these plants, responsible for their anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects. In several in vitro tests, its anti-proliferative activity against tumour cell lines has been demonstrated, and due to its ability to specifically inhibit the UCP2 protein and inhibit STAT3 activation, a significant increase in the cytotoxicity of several anticancer drugs was observed in co-treatment with genipin. In recent years, the importance of genipin has increased due to the possibility of using this iridoid as a biocompatible and low cytotoxicity potent crosslinking agent in the manufacture of dressings, in tissue engineering, as a component of a drug carrier system and in the production of food packaging. Genipin is also a substrate in the production of a blue pigment used as a food additive and fabric pigment, and other applications. Due to documented cases of hepatotoxicity, genipin and the blue pigment derived from it are being investigated for effective and safe therapeutic and non-drug use. The current paper discusses selected aspects of chemistry, activity and use of this interesting compound.

Abstract
In Chile, limited information is available on colorants in commonly consumed foods among vulnerable age groups. We developed and validated a rapid HPLC-DAD method to simultaneously evaluate 11 synthetic colorants in candies, beverages, ice cream, and cereals. The method exhibited excellent analytical performance for all 11 colorants with LOD (0.44 - 1.55 mgL-1), LOQ v(1.32 - 4.70 mgL-1), precision (4.0 and 7.3% RSD), and recovery (80 - 105%) in fortified matrices (10-50-100 mgL-1). The highest detection frequencies were as follows: cereals > candies > beverages > ice cream. Sunset Yellow was the most prevalent colorant in all food matrices, followed by Allura Red and Azorubine. Positive samples contained between 1 and 5 synthetic colorants. With the exception of cereals, the colorant concentrations in the remaining matrices exceeded the Codex Alimentarius regulations and the values reported in other studies worldwide, indicating the Chilean population is at risk.

Abstract
The growth of the world population and the rapid industrialization of food have led to food producers' increased reliance on food additives. While food additives offer numerous conveniences and advantages in food applications, the potential risks associated with synthetic additives remain a significant concern. This report examines the current status of safety assessment and toxicity studies of common synthetic additives, including flavorings (sweeteners and flavor enhancers), colorants, preservatives (antimicrobials and antioxidants), and emulsifiers. The report also examines recent advances in promising plant-based alternative additives in terms of active ingredients, sensory properties, potential health benefits, food application challenges, and their related technologies (edible coatings/films and nanoencapsulation technologies), providing valuable references and insights for the sustainable development of food additives.

Abstract
Considering the growing interest for safer, environmentally friendly and healthier products, the search for natural colorants to replace their synthetic has been raised. This is particularly challenging for the rare and usually unstable bluish coloring substances. This comprehensive review describes several bluish pigments which can be obtained from natural sources (plants and mostly microorganisms), covering less known molecules to well established compounds (although no focus is given for anthocyanins). Key information about each compound, including sources, extraction procedures, properties, and potential applications, are presented. Despite many studies on these molecules, toxicological and stability studies are still lacking for many of them. Therefore, this text also discusses the regulatory requirements for approving new coloring substances. Given the increasing robustness of scientific data supporting the biological activities attributed to many of these pigments, it is possible to envisage that some of them may be commercially available for industrial applications in different fields, not only in traditional food or cosmetic uses but in pharmaceutical formulations as well.

Abstract
Merriam-Webster and Oxford define a xenobiotic as any substance foreign to living systems. Allura Red AC (a.k.a., E129; FD&C Red No. 40), a synthetic food dye extensively used in manufacturing ultra-processed foods and therefore highly prevalent in our food supply, falls under this category. The surge in synthetic food dye consumption during the 70s and 80s was followed by an epidemic of metabolic diseases and the emergence of early-onset colorectal cancer in the 1990s. This temporal association raises significant concerns, particularly given the widespread inclusion of synthetic food dyes in ultra-processed products, notably those marketed toward children. Given its interactions with key contributors to colorectal carcinogenesis such as inflammatory mediators, the microbiome, and DNA damage, there is growing interest in understanding Allura Red AC's potential impact on colon health as a putative carcinogen. This review discusses the history of Allura Red AC, current research on its effects on the colon and rectum, potential mechanisms underlying its impact on colon health, and provides future considerations. Indeed, although no governing agencies classify Allura Red AC as a carcinogen, its interaction with key guardians of carcinogenesis makes it suspect and worthy of further molecular investigation. The goal of this review is to inspire research into the impact of synthetic food dyes on colon health.

Abstract
In this study, a novel, low-cost, and efficient adsorbent film was fabricated by a solvothermal method. The adsorbent film was developed to be hydrolytically stable, not vulnerable to aggregation in aqueous environments, and not prone to secondary contamination. The adsorbent consists of cellulose acetate (CA) as a support embedded with a MOF-5/crystalline nanocellulose (CNC) composite material. The CA-supported MOF-5/CNC film was characterized using a variety of techniques, including X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which revealed hydroxyl and carbonyl functional groups on the adsorbent film. The film was evaluated for the adsorptive removal of methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous solution. Adsorption was characterized by a rapid increase in MB adsorption during the first hour with equilibrium achieved within 4-5 h into the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity was determined to be 4.29 mg/g and the maximum dye removal efficiency was 77%. The MB adsorption process best fitted the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption was exothermic and feasible. The adsorbent film showed admirable regeneration ability, demonstrating its cost-effectiveness and its potential as a promising material for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
A BODIPY-containing conjugated microporous polymer (CMP, LBFD-1) was modified with calixarene to develop a hydrophilic CMP (LBFD-2) with broader absorption extending to the near-infrared-II region. LBFD-2 exhibited an H2O2 production rate of 2.14 mmol g-1 h-1 in the air without any sacrificial agents. The removal efficiency (η) of LBFD-2 towards methylene blue and rhodamine B reached >99.5% within 20 and 40 min in light. LBFD-2 can withstand diverse environmental changes, showing excellent reusability and potential for practical applications in real-water systems.

Abstract
The plant pigments called betalains are nutritionally safe polar compounds. They are subdivided into betaxanthins (having orange to yellow hues) and betacyanins (purple to red violet hues). Betacyanins change color with a change in pH, particularly in the range 6-8 and 9-11. Perishable foods like fish, chicken, beef, pork, and others tend to release total volatile base-nitrogen (TVB-N) during storage or deterioration, which leads to a change in the pH of pH-sensitive materials in the vicinity. pH-sensitive pigment-incorporated polymeric films with inherent active properties (or active/intelligent films) are increasingly being studied as an alternative to synthetic pH indicators to detect the accumulation of TVB-N by changing its color to indicate the stage of perishable food spoilage. There are many methods of developing such films under different conditions using different bio-based biodegradable polymer(s) and biocompatible plasticizer combinations. Among the reported methods, solution casting method has been the preferred one in most studies covered in this review. This method can be carried out under mild conditions. As such, betacyanins-incorporated polymeric films essentially require mild processing conditions because of their heat sensitivity, which will invariably affect the performance in food freshness monitoring. In this review, film fabrication parameters like temperature and duration of dissolution of polymers, plasticizer concentration, pH of the film-forming solution, film drying, and conditioning/aging, have been critically appraised based on the available literature. The lack of studies on the safety of active/intelligent films has been systematically highlighted in this review to focus future studies on this area. Graphical abstract

Abstract
Natural and synthetic colorants present in food can modulate hemostasis, which includes the coagulation process and blood platelet activation. Some colorants have cardioprotective activity as well. However, the effect of genipin (a natural blue colorant) and synthetic blue colorants (including patent blue V and brilliant blue FCF) on hemostasis is not clear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of three blue colorants-genipin, patent blue V, and brilliant blue FCF-on selected parameters of hemostasis in vitro. The anti- or pro-coagulant potential was assessed in human plasma by measuring the following coagulation times: thrombin time (TT), prothrombin time (PT), and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT). Moreover, we used the Total Thrombus formation Analysis System (T-TAS, PL-chip) to evaluate the anti-platelet potential of the colorants in whole blood. We also measured their effect on the adhesion of washed blood platelets to fibrinogen and collagen. Lastly, the cytotoxicity of the colorants against blood platelets was assessed based on the activity of extracellular lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). We observed that genipin (at all concentrations (1-200 µM)) did not have a significant effect on the coagulation times (PT, APTT, and TT). However, genipin at the highest concentration (200 µM) and patent blue V at the concentrations of 1 and 10 µM significantly prolonged the time of occlusion measured using the T-TAS, which demonstrated their anti-platelet activity. We also observed that genipin decreased the adhesion of platelets to fibrinogen and collagen. Only patent blue V and brilliant blue FCF significantly shortened the APTT (at the concentration of 10 µM) and TT (at concentrations of 1 and 10 µM), demonstrating pro-coagulant activity. These synthetic blue colorants also modulated the process of human blood platelet adhesion, stimulating the adhesion to fibrinogen and inhibiting the adhesion to collagen. The results demonstrate that genipin is not toxic. In addition, because of its ability to reduce blood platelet activation, genipin holds promise as a novel and valuable agent that improves the health of the cardiovascular system and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, the mechanism of its anti-platelet activity remains unclear and requires further studies. Its in vivo activity and interaction with various anti-coagulant and anti-thrombotic drugs, including aspirin and its derivatives, should be examined as well.

Abstract
Some synthetic dyes are fraudulently added into spices to appeal visually to consumers. Food regulations in several countries, including the United States, Australia, Japan and the European Union, strictly prohibit the use of unauthorised synthetic dyes in food. Nevertheless, illegal practices persist, where spices contaminated with potentially carcinogenic dyes have been documented, posing potential health risks to consumers. In the present study, 14 synthetic dyes were investigated through liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry in 252 commercially available spices in the Singapore market. In 18 out of these (7.1%) at least 1 illegal dye was detected at concentrations ranging from 0.010 to 114 mg/kg. Besides potential health risks, presence of these adulterants also reflects the economic motivations behind their fraudulent use. Findings in the present study further emphasise the need for increased public awareness, stricter enforcement, and continuous monitoring of illegal synthetic dyes in spices to ensure Singapore's food safety.

Abstract
In this work, green method to synthesize chromium-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods (NRs) using an aqueous flower extract from Rhododendron arboretum is explored. Herein, chromium-doped ZnO NRs were prepared with different amount of chromium doping, varied as 2-10%. The green synthesized products underwent substantial analysis through X-ray diffraction (XRD), spectroscopic such as ultraviolet spectroscopy(UV-Vis) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. All samples were found to have hexagonal wurtzite ZnO, with average particle sizes of 52.41, 56.6, 54.44, 53.05, and 56.99 nm, respectively, for 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10% chromium doping in ZnO NRs. The Cr-doped ZnO NRs exhibited remarkable photocatalytic degradation activity of cationic dyes under UV-light, i.e., Malachite Green and Fuchsin Basic with degradation of 99.604 and 99.881%, respectively in 90 min. The reusability tests for these green synthesized Cr-doped ZnO NRs have also been carried out, showed 9-11 cycles with 85% of degradation efficiency. In addition, the Cr-doped ZnO NRs exhibited high selectivity for cationic dyes when experiments against mixture of dyes were performed. Photodegradation kinetics followed the pseudo-first-order model. The flower-extract-stabilized chromium-doped ZnO NRs demonstrated high photocatalytic activity toward malachite green and fuchsin basic dyes, potential material for pollution remediation.

Abstract
Nanogap-based plasmonic metal nanocrystals have been applied in surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection, while the closed and insufficient electromagnetic fields as well as the nonreproducible Raman signal of the substrate greatly restrict the actual application. Herein, a highly uniform Au/AgAu monolayer with abundant nanogaps and huge electromagnetic enhancement is prepared, which shows ultrasensitive and reproducible SERS detection. Au/AgAu with an inner nanogap is first prepared based on Au nanotriangles, and the nanogap is opened from the three tips via a subsequent etching process. The open-gap Au/AgAu displays much higher SERS efficiency than Au and Au/AgAu with an inner nanogap on detecting crystal violet due to the open-gap induced electromagnetic enhancement and improved molecular absorption. Furthermore, the open-gap Au/AgAu monolayer is prepared via interfacial self-assembly, which shows further improved SERS due to the dense and strong hotspots in the nanocavities induced by the electromagnetic coupling between adjacent open gaps. The monolayer possesses excellent signal stability, uniformity, and reproducibility. The analytic enhancement factor and relative standard deviation reach to 2.12 × 108 and 4.65% on detecting crystal violet, respectively. Moreover, the monolayer achieves efficient detection of thiram in apple juice, biphenyl-4-thiol, 4-mercaptobenzoic, melamine, and a mixed solution of four different molecules, showing great promise in practical detection.

Abstract
Nanotechnology has emerged as an effective means of removing contaminants from water. Traditional techniques for producing nanoparticles, such as physical methods (condensation and evaporation) and chemical methods (oxidation and reduction), have demonstrated high efficiency. However, these methods come with certain drawbacks, including the significant energy requirement and the use of costly and hazardous chemicals that may cause nanoparticles to adhere to surfaces. To address these limitations, researchers are actively developing alternative procedures that are cost-effective, environmentally safe, and user-friendly. One promising approach involves biological synthesis, which utilizes plants or microorganisms as reducing and capping agents. This review discusses various methods of nanoparticle synthesis, with a focus on biological synthesis using naturally occurring bioflocculants from microorganisms. Bioflocculants offer several advantages, including harmlessness, biodegradability, and minimal secondary pollution. Furthermore, the review covers the characterization of synthesized nanoparticles, their antimicrobial activity, and cytotoxicity. Additionally, it explores the utilization of these NPs in water purification and dye removal processes.

Abstract
Indigo carmine has a variety of uses in foods, textiles, medicine, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. There are studies reporting the toxic potential of indigo carmine on human health and the environment. In this study, we investigated the cytogenotoxic effects of indigo carmine using apical root cells of Allium cepa. Allium cepa bulbs were subjected to four treatments with indigo carmine (0.0032, 0.0064, 0.0125, and 0.2 mg/mL) and to ultrapure water as a control. After 5 days, root growth, root length, mitotic index, mitotic inhibition, chromosomal anomalies, and cell morphology were analyzed. According to our results, a decrease in root length and mitotic index was observed at all concentrations of indigo carmine. Additionally, several types of chromosomal abnormalities were observed, such as disturbed metaphase, sticky chain metaphase, anaphase bridge, and laggard chromosomes. Moreover, histological observation indicated that indigo carmine induces alterations in various components of root tip tissue, such as deformation and alteration of the cell wall, progressive condensation of chromatin, shrinkage of the nuclei, and an increase in the number of irregularly shaped nuclei and nuclear fragments. Our results indicate that the tested concentrations of indigo carmine may have toxic effects and raise concerns about its intensive use in many fields.

Abstract
Pollution is a global menace that poses harmful effects on all the living ecosystems and to the Earth. As years pass by, the available and the looming rate of pollutants increases at a faster rate. Although many treatments and processing strategies are waged for treating such pollutants, the by-products and the wastes or drain off generated by these treatments further engages in the emission of hazardous waste. Innovative and long-lasting solutions are required to address the urgent global issue of hazardous pollutant remediation from contaminated environments. Myco-remediation is a top-down green and eco-friendly tool for pollution management. It is a cost-effective and safer practice of converting pernicious substances into non-toxic forms by the use of fungi. But these pollutants can be transformed into useable products along with multiple benefits for the environment such as sequestration of carbon emissions and also to generate high valuable bioactive materials that fits as a sustainable economic model. The current study has examined the possible applications of fungi in biorefineries and their critical role in the transformation and detoxification of pollutants. The paper offers important insights into using fungal bioremediation for both economically and environmentally sound solutions in the domain of biorefinery applications by combining recent research findings.

Abstract
The intestinal barrier, an indispensable guardian of gastrointestinal health, mediates the intricate exchange between internal and external environments. Anchored by evolutionarily conserved junctional complexes, this barrier meticulously regulates paracellular permeability in essentially all living organisms. Disruptions in intestinal junctional complexes, prevalent in inflammatory bowel diseases and irritable bowel syndrome, compromise barrier integrity and often lead to the notorious "leaky gut" syndrome. Critical to the maintenance of the intestinal barrier is a finely orchestrated network of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that modulate the expression, composition, and functionality of junctional complexes. This review navigates through the composition of key junctional complex components and the common methods used to assess intestinal permeability. It also explores the critical intracellular signaling pathways that modulate these junctional components. Lastly, we delve into the complex dynamics between the junctional complexes, microbial communities, and environmental chemicals in shaping the intestinal barrier function. Comprehending this intricate interplay holds paramount importance in unraveling the pathophysiology of gastrointestinal disorders. Furthermore, it lays the foundation for the development of precise therapeutic interventions targeting barrier dysfunction.

Abstract
Rice bran protein concentrate (RPC), an industrial by-product, may emerge as a green alternative for substituting animal proteins in microencapsulating compounds of interest. This study applied RPC, combined with maltodextrin (MD) as carrier agents, in the spray drying of grape juice, a product rich in these bioactive compounds, seeking to protect anthocyanins from degradation. The effects of carrier agent concentration [C: 0.75, 1.00, and 1.25 g of carrier agents (CA)/g of soluble solids of the juice (SS)] and RPC:CA ratio (P: 0%, as a control sample, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) on anthocyanin retention and powder properties were evaluated. At 1.00 g CA/g SS, the internal and total retentions of anthocyanins improved by 2.4 and 3.2 times, respectively, when the RPC:CA ratio increased from 0% to 20%. The protein also exhibited excellent surface activity on the grape juice and positively influenced the physicochemical properties of the microparticles. There was a reduction in stickiness, degree of caking, and hygroscopicity, in addition to an increased antioxidant capacity when protein was used in combination with MD, especially at 1.00 and 1.25 g CA/g SS. Therefore, this study demonstrated that RPC could enhance the protection of anthocyanins during the spray drying of grape juice.

Abstract
Dyes, such as indigo carmine, have become indispensable to modern life, being widely used in the food, textile, pharmaceutical, medicine, and cosmetic industry. Although indigo carmine is considered toxic and has many adverse effects, it is found in many foods, and the maximum permitted level is 500 mg/kg. Indigo carmine is one of the most used dyes in the textile industry, especially for dyeing denim, and it is also used in medicine due to its impressive applicability in diagnostic methods and surgical procedures, such as in gynecological and urological surgeries and microsurgery. It is reported that indigo carmine is toxic for humans and can cause various pathologies, such as hypertension, hypotension, skin irritations, or gastrointestinal disorders. In this review, we discuss the structure and properties of indigo carmine; its use in various industries and medicine; the adverse effects of its ingestion, injection, or skin contact; the effects on environmental pollution; and its toxicity testing. For this review, 147 studies were considered relevant. Most of the cited articles were those about environmental pollution with indigo carmine (51), uses of indigo carmine in medicine (45), and indigo carmine as a food additive (17).

Abstract
The process of skin aging is a physiological phenomenon that can not be avoided. According to global population data, the rate of aging increases by approximately 13% every year. The impact of skin aging has become a significant concern and challenge for developed countries. Consequently, there has been a search for potential new anti-aging agents. This review aims to provide an overview of the current research status of plants of the Anak Dalam Tribe (Indonesian: Suku Anak Dalam [SAD]; referred to as SAD henceforth) in Jambi Province, Indonesia, for the development of potential new anti-aging agents. One such discovery is a product derived from natural ingredients with the ability to prevent premature aging. These new anti-aging plants have been used for centuries by the Anak Dalam tribe, for treating skin diseases and maintaining skin health through traditional remedies. Recent research on herbal formulations used by the SAD community in Indonesia for skin beauty treatments, reported by Research on Medicinal Plants and Herbs or RISTOJA, indicates that 64 plant species are used for skin care. Among these plants, Toona sinensis, Curcuma heyneana, Curcuma zedoaria, Curcuma longa, and Kaempferia rotunda are the most commonly used medicinal plants with anti-aging properties. T. sinensis is a tree, while the others are herbs. T. sinensis shows the highest potential for development as an anti-aging agent, with its extracts, active fractions, and bioactive quercetin isolates known to possess strong anti-aging activities both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, C. heyneana, C. longa, C. zedoaria, and K. rotunda also show potential for further research, and three of them have demonstrated good potential for in vivo anti-aging activities. Only K. rotunda demonstrates relatively weaker antioxidant activity compared to T. sinensis, C. heyneana, C. longa, and C. zedoaria. Nevertheless, K. rotunda can still be developed to search for potential opportunities as agents with other activities, while T. sinensis, C. heyneana, C. longa, and C. zedoaria in the findings could be an opportunity to explore the potential of new anti-aging agents. In conclusion, of the five medicinal plants traditionally used by the SAD in Jambi, Indonesia, C. longa has received the most extensive research and shows potential for the development of anti-aging solutions. C. zedoaria, C. heyneana and K. rotunda show good potential for in vivo anti-aging activity. T. sinensis is the least-studied medicinal plant. Nevertheless, it has potential for development, as it is widely used by the SAD community for both traditional medicine and skin care.

Abstract
Plant cell cultures have emerged as a promising tool for producing active molecules due to their numerous advantages over traditional agricultural methods. Flavonols, and anthocyanin pigments in particular, together with other phenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acid, are known for their beneficial health properties, mainly due to their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities. The synthesis of these molecules is finely regulated in plant cells and controlled at the transcriptional level by specific MYB and bHLH transcription factors that coordinate the transcription of structural biosynthetic genes. The co-expression of peach PpMYB10.1 and PpbHLH3 in tobacco was used to develop tobacco cell lines showing high expression of both the peach transgenes and the native flavonol structural genes. These cell lines were further selected for fast growth. High production levels of chlorogenic acid, anthocyanins (mainly cyanidin 3-rutinoside), and other phenolics were also achieved in pre-industrial scale-up trials. A single-column-based purification protocol was developed to produce a lyophile called ANT-CA, which was stable over time, showed beneficial effects on cell viability, and had antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and wound-healing activities. This lyophile could be a valuable ingredient for food or cosmetic applications.

Abstract
The treatment of complex polluted wastewater has become an increasingly critical concern for the various types of hazardous organic compounds, including synthetic dyes and pharmaceuticals. Due to their efficient and eco-friendly advantages, the white-rot fungi (WRF) have been applied to degrade environmental pollutants. This study aimed to investigate the removal ability of WRF (i.e., Trametes versicolor WH21) in the co-contamination system composed of Azure B dye and sulfacetamide (SCT). Our study discovered that the decolorization of Azure B (300 mg/L) by strain WH21 was significantly improved (from 30.5% to 86.5%) by the addition of SCT (30 mg/L), while the degradation of SCT was also increased from 76.4% to 96.2% in the co-contamination system. Transcriptomic and biochemical analyses indicated that the ligninolytic enzyme system was activated by the enhanced enzymatic activities of MnPs and laccases, generating higher concentration of extracellular H2O2 and organic acids in strain WH21 in response to SCT stress. Purified MnP and laccase of strain WH21 were revealed with remarkable degradation effect on both Azure B and SCT. These findings significantly expanded the existing knowledge on the biological treatment of organic pollutants, indicating the strong promise of WRF in the treatment of complex polluted wastewater.

Abstract
Carmoisine belongs to a water-soluble synthetic dye and is often used as a food additive. Previous research has shown that carmoisine is toxic to rats and zebrafish, but there have been few reports on the effect of carmoisine on soil-dwelling social insects. The present study evaluated carmoisine toxicity in Polyrhachis vicina Roger. We found that the effects of different concentrations of carmoisine on the mortality of workers were dose-dependent. The 10% lethal dose (LD10), 50% lethal dose (LD50) and 90% lethal dose (LD90) of carmoisine to workers at 96 h was calculated to be 0.504, 5.491 and 10.478 g/L, respectivily. LD10 of workers were selected to treat the fourth instar larvae, pupae and adults for 10 days. The results showed that the survival rate of all ants, except for females, was significantly reduced, especially larvae and workers. The body weight of larvae, pupae and males decreased significantly, while weight gain was observed in the females and workers. The appearance of larvae, pupae and workers changed after carmoisine treatment, such as body darkening and epidermis shrinking of larvae and pupae, as well as body segment expansion of workers. Furthermore, carmoisine altered the expression of the estrogen-related receptor, tailless and homothorax of P. vicina (Pv-ERR, Pv-tll and Pv-hth) to varying degrees in larvae and adults. We believe that variations in body weight can lead to a decrease in survival rate and appearance changes in the ants, which may be related to abnormal gene expressions caused by carmoisine treatment. Therefore, we confirm that carmoisine has negative effects on the growth and development of P. vicina.

Abstract
Hydroxypyranoflavylium (HPF) cations are synthetic analogs possessing the same basic chromophore as the pyranoanthocyanins that form during the maturation of red wine. HPF cations absorb strongly in the visible spectral region, and most are fluorescent, triplet-sensitize singlet oxygen formation in solution and are strong photooxidants, properties that are desirable in a sensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT). The results of this study demonstrate that several simple HPF dyes can indeed function as PDT sensitizers. Of the eight HPF cations investigated in this work, four were phototoxic to a human cervical adenocarcinoma cell line (HeLa) at the 1-10 μmol dm-3 level, while only one of the eight compounds showed noticeable cytotoxicity in the dark. Neither a Type I nor a Type II mechanism can adequately rationalize the differences in phototoxicity of the compounds. Colocalization experiments with the most phototoxic compound demonstrated the affinity of the dye for both the mitochondria and lysosomes of HeLa cells. The fact that relatively modest structural differences, e.g., the exchange of an electron-donating substituent for an electron-withdrawing substituent, can cause profound differences in the phototoxicity, together with the relatively facile synthesis of substituted HPF cations, makes them interesting candidates for further evaluation as PDT sensitizers.

Abstract
Synthetic food colors are important ingredients in the food industry. These synthetic food colorants are azo dyes, majorly acidic in nature such as Allura red and Tartrazine. They are present in sweets, carbonated drinks, meat products, and candies to attract the consumers. This review article is an attempt to explain the adverse effects of azo dyes and their association with oral cavities and cardiovascular disorders. These synthetic dyes (azo dyes) have staining effects on dentin. Poor dental care accelerates the bacterial accumulation on the dental crown (Gram-negative bacteria P. gingivalis, T. denticola, and T. forsythia and Gram-positive bacteria Strep. Gordonii), causing the washing of enamel, forming dental plaque. Bacterial pathogens (P. ginigivalis and F. nacleatum) release different chemicals (FadA and Fap2) that bind to protein on the cell by producing an inflammatory response through different line-host defenses, such as Gingival epithelial cells (ECs), Hemi-desmosomes, and desmosomes, which helps the bacterium migration from the cell–cell junction. This makes the junctions slightly open up and makes the whole vessel permeable, through which the bacterium enters into the blood stream line. This leads to different major arteries, such as the carotid artery, and causes the accumulation of plaque in major cardiac arteries, which causes different cardiovascular disorders. These bacterial species present in gums cause cardiovascular diseases, such as ischemic heart disease, coronary artery disease, heart attacks and strokes, and arrhythmias, which can lead to death.

Abstract
Violacein, a blue-violet compound with a wide range of beneficial bioactivities, is an attractive product for microbial production. Currently, violacein production has been demonstrated in several sugar heterotrophs through metabolic engineering; however, the cost of production remains an obstacle for business ventures. To address this issue, the development of host strains that can utilize inexpensive alternative substrates to reduce production costs would enable the commercialization of violacein. In this study, we engineered a facultative methylotroph, Methylorubrum extorquens AM1, to develop a methanol-based platform for violacein production. By optimizing expression vectors as well as inducer concentrations, 11.7 mg/L violacein production was first demonstrated using methanol as the sole substrate. Considering that unidentified bottlenecks for violacein biosynthesis in the shikimate pathway of M. extorquens AM1 would be difficult to address using generic metabolic engineering approaches, random mutagenesis and site-directed mutagenesis were implemented, and a 2-fold improvement in violacein production was achieved. Finally, by co-utilization of methanol and acetate, a remarkable enhancement of violacein production to 118 mg/L was achieved. Our results establish a platform strain for violacein production from non-sugar feedstocks, which may contribute to the development of an economically efficient large-scale fermentation system for violacein production.

Abstract
Genipin is an important monoterpene iridoid compound isolated from Gardenia jasminoides J.Ellis fruits and from Genipa americana fruits, or genipap. It is a precursor of a blue pigment which may be attractive alternative to existing food dyes and it possesses various potential therapeutic properties such as anti-cancer, anti-diabetic and hepatoprotective activity. Biomedical studies also show that genipin may act as a neuroprotective drug. This review describes new aspects of the bioactivity of genipin against various diseases, as well as its toxicity and industrial applications, and presents its potential mechanism of action.
