Abstract
OBJECTIVE Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is one of the most common hip disorders in adolescents, often linked to obesity. However, other factors, such as vitamin D deficiency, may also contribute to SCFE development. This study investigates the impact of vitamin D deficiency on SCFE development in a large cohort. METHODS We utilized the TriNetX national database to query pediatric patients with documented calcidiol levels. Patients with a recorded visit below the age of 9 and subsequent documented calcidiol levels were followed until SCFE occurrence or age 18. Patients were categorized into vitamin D adequate (≥ 30 ng/mL) and deficient (< 30 ng/mL) groups. Propensity score matching was performed using a multivariable logistic regression model to adjust for baseline characteristics, including age, sex, race, and body mass index percentile. Significance testing was conducted using the Fisher exact test and χ 2 tests to compare SCFE risk between the cohorts, with a significance level set at P <0.05. RESULTS On preliminary analysis, 98,045 patients met the inclusion criteria. After matching, 34,552 individuals in both vitamin D deficient and adequate groups were included, with an average age of 8.4 years at the time of their first visit and 50% females. SCFE occurred in 136 (0.39%) and 48 (0.14%) patients in the vitamin D deficient and adequate groups, respectively ( P < 0.0001). Vitamin D deficiency significantly increased SCFE risk, with a relative risk of 2.8 (95% CI: 2-3.9; P < 0.0001) and a hazard ratio of 1.6 (95% CI: 1.1-2.2; P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION This study, one of the largest to date, establishes a significant association between vitamin D deficiency and SCFE development. After controlling for potential confounding variables, including body mass index, individuals with vitamin D deficiency were ∼2.83 times more likely to develop SCFE. The study findings highlight the need for further research to evaluate whether supplementation could mitigate this risk of developing SCFE. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in children/adolescents in extreme southern China. Methods This multicenter, cross-sectional study included 21,811 children aged 0-18 years from 18 districts in Hainan Province, using a multistage stratified random sampling method from January 2021 to March 2022. Results Serum 25(OH)D levels decreased with age (p trend <0.001). VDD prevalence increased significantly from 3.7% (95% CI: 3.2, 4.3) in children aged 0-3 years to 43.5% (95% CI: 42.1, 45.0) in those aged 13-18 years. Girls and urban residents showed higher deficiency rates. Adolescents (13-18 years) had the highest prevalence of VDD (43.5%), while toddlers (0-3 years) had the lowest (3.7%). Factors influencing vitamin D status included gender, urban residency, and breastfeeding duration. Seasonal variations showed higher deficiency rates in autumn, particularly among preschoolers. Regional differences were noted, with the highest deficiency in semiarid and subhumid zones for various age groups. Conclusion A significant increase in VDD with age, particularly among adolescents, urban girls, and during autumn, emphasizing the need for targeted strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency has become a matter of concern in pediatric cancer patients. A relationship between neuroblastoma and Vitamin D signaling pathways has been revealed with interest in the antiproliferative and antiinvasive properties of vitamin D. Our aim is to describe the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency among children with high-risk neuroblastoma (HR-NB) and to explore its association with disease status. MATERIALS AND METHODS In all, 182 patients with HR-NB were managed at our center from 2017 to 2021. Serum 25(OH)D levels were tested at the first blood analysis performed and correlated with clinical data and disease status. RESULTS One hundred forty-eight (81.4%) had low 25(OH)D levels (48.4% categorized as deficiency (25(OH)D below 20 ng/mL) and 33.0% as insufficiency (25(OH)D 20 to 30 ng/mL). Median Vitamin D level was 20.2 ng/mL. Vitamin D levels were not associated with race or sex. Although malnourished patients had lower median 25(OH)D levels(11.1 ng/mL), no statistical association was observed with Vitamin D deficiency. There was no association between Vitamin D levels and disease status. An inverse correlation was found between age and vitamin D levels ( P =0.0040). CONCLUSION A concerning high prevalence of low Vitamin D levels affects more than two-thirds of patients with HR-NB in our cohort, regardless of the disease status at the time of evaluation. Older children are at a higher risk for deficient levels of vitamin D.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH D) levels are associated with bone outcomes in a multiracial cohort of young adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 165 participants (83 men, 82 women, 18-30 years of age) who self-identified as Asian, Black, or White. We measured bone microarchitecture and strength of the distal radius and tibia using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography. We used linear regression to estimate the association between 25-OH D (ng/mL) and bone measurements, adjusting for race, sex, age, weight, height, calcium intake, physical activity, and season. RESULTS A total of 43.6% of participants were 25-OH D deficient (<20 ng/mL) with greater prevalence in Asian (38.9%) and Black (43.1%) compared with White (18.0%) participants (P < 0.001). At the distal radius, 25-OH D was positively associated with cortical area, trabecular density, cortical thickness, cortical porosity, and failure load (P < 0.05 for all). At the distal tibia, higher 25-OH D was associated with higher cortical area, trabecular density, trabecular number, failure load, and lower trabecular separation and cortical density (P < 0.05 for all). After multivariable adjustment, those with 25-OH D deficiency had generally worse bone microarchitecture than those with 25-OH D sufficiency. Black individuals had largely more favorable bone outcomes than Asian and White individuals, despite higher prevalence of 25-OH D deficiency. CONCLUSIONS We found a high prevalence of 25-OH D deficiency in a multiracial cohort of young adults. Lower 25-OH D was associated with worse bone outcomes at the distal radius and tibia at the time of peak bone mass, warranting further attention to vitamin D status in young adults.

Abstract
Background
Vitamin D deficiency occurs frequently in cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF bronchiectasis patients. Yet, few studies have assessed the impact of vitamin D status on the clinical outcomes in pediatric bronchiectasis. This study is designed to assess vitamin D level and determine its effect on exacerbations, bacterial colonization, and lung function in pediatric patients with CF and non-CF bronchiectasis.
Results
This cross-sectional case-control study assessing vitamin D level was performed in a total of sixty cases under the age of 18 years—forty cases with CF and non-CF bronchiectasis and twenty age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Associations between serum vitamin D and clinical and laboratory parameters were assessed in the patient groups. Vitamin D deficiency was more prevalent among CF and non-CF bronchiectasis patients (75%, 45%) compared to controls (10%) (P < 0.001). In addition, vitamin D deficiency was associated with more frequent and severe pulmonary exacerbations (66.7%, 46.7%) (P=0.033, < 0.001), chronic Pseudomonas infection (80%) (P=0.060) among CF patients, and with lower FEV1 (66%) (P= 0.071) among non-CF bronchiectasis. Moreover, a cutoff value of vitamin D level equal or less than 22.5 ng/ml was accurate in differentiating moderate from mild pulmonary exacerbations in both patients’ groups (AUC=0.809) (p=0.004).
Conclusions
Vitamin D deficiency is not uncommon in both CF and non-CF bronchiectasis. In this population, vitamin D deficiency is associated with more frequent pulmonary exacerbations, chronic Pseudomonas infection, and worse lung function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations reflect vitamin D status, with deficiency implicated as an underlying factor for many adverse health effects. This study aims to analyze the association between vitamin D status and different anthropometric measures in a large pediatric population. METHODS This nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019 in blood samples obtained from school students of 30 provinces in Iran. Participants were 2596 children and adolescents aged 7-18 years. Weight, height, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), neck circumference (NC), and wrist circumference (WrC) were measured. Body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-height ratio (W/HtR) were calculated. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were measured using chemiluminescent immunoassay. RESULTS Participants consisted of 55% boys, 71.3% urban inhabitants, with a mean (SD) age of 12.1 (3.0) years. Overall, vitamin D deficiency was documented in 10.6% of participants, insufficiency in 60.4%, and sufficiency in 29% of the population studied. The mean of BMI and WC was higher in the vitamin D deficient than in the vitamin D sufficient group (19.31 kg/m2 and 69.24 cm vs. 18.34 kg/m2 and 65.73 cm, respectively, P < 0.01). Multivariate linear regression models revealed a significant association of vitamin D insufficiency with WC and W/HtR (P < 0.05). Likewise, in the multivariate regression models, vitamin D deficiency was associated with BMI, WC, and W/HtR (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings on the inverse association between vitamin D status and some anthropometric measures underscore the importance of providing vitamin D by fortification and supplementation programs of vitamin D for the pediatric population. Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide public health problem. Low vitamin D and its consequences among children and adolescents could be considered as one of the most important health-related problems. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in healthy Egyptian adolescents and investigate factors associated with vitamin D status.A cross-sectional study was conducted on 572 school children (270 males and 302 females) aged 14 to 18 years, who were randomly selected from high schools in one governorate in Egypt. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Vitamin D level, serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphates were measured.Vitamin D deficiency was almost present in all the studied Egyptian healthy adolescents (99%), 94.8% had vitamin D deficiency and 4.2% had vitamin D insufficiency. Girls had a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency than boys. There was a significant association between lack of physical activity, sun exposure, and vitamin D deficiency.Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are highly prevalent. In sunny countries, the special pattern of conservative clothing and the lack of outdoor physical activity might be the underlying factors for the high prevalence in females. Vitamin D supplementation seems to be mandatory to halt the problem.

Abstract
Suboptimal vitamin D status is a global health issue that affects children and adults worldwide. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency has been well documented in the pediatric population in the United States. Although vitamin D deficiency is common, radiographic findings are uncommon and can be subtle. Additionally, because of the high prevalence of pediatric vitamin D insufficiency, it is commonly identified in young children with fractures. However, the majority of pediatric fractures are caused by trauma to healthy bones. Some, especially in infants and toddlers, are caused by non-accidental trauma. A small percentage is related to medical disease, including those associated with disorders of collagen, disorders of mineralization, and non-fracture mimics. Despite the scientific evidence, among disorders of mineralization, non-rachitic disorders of vitamin D have become a popular non-scientific theory to explain the fractures identified in abused children. Although infants and young children with rickets can fracture bones, the vast majority of fractures identified in abused infants are not caused by bone disease. Here we present a review of the literature on bone disease in the setting of accidental and non-accidental trauma. This context can help physicians remain vigilant about identifying vulnerable young children whose injuries are caused by non-accidental trauma.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in children with severe obesity. We hypothesized that severe obesity could modify the seasonal variations in 25(OH)D and PTH serum levels throughout the year. A cross-sectional clinical and blood testing (calcium, phosphorus, 25(OH)D, and PTH) was carried out in 282 patients with severe obesity, aged 7.2-15.2 years. A control group was recruited (348 healthy children, aged 7.1-14.9 years). The criteria of the US Endocrine Society were used for the definition of hypovitaminosis D. Vitamin D deficiency and hyperparathyroidism were more frequent (p < 0.05) in the obesity group (44.5 vs. 11.5% and 22.4 vs. 3.9%, respectively). There were seasonal variations in 25(OH)D levels in the obesity group, but they were lower (p < 0.05) with respect to the control group. In contrast, PTH levels were higher (p < 0.05) in the obesity group with respect to the control group, but there were no significant seasonal variations in PTH levels.Conclusion: Suboptimal vitamin D status and high levels of PTH are a common feature in pediatric population with severe obesity. In these patients, the seasonal variations in 25(OH)D were not modified, and PTH levels remained increased throughout the year, but without any seasonal variations. What is Known: • Obesity has been associated with lower 25(OH)D and higher PTH levels. • Relation among vitamin D and PTH through a natural year in children with obesity is partially known. What is New: • Seasonal variations in 25(OH)D are maintained in children with severe obesity, but PTH levels remained increased throughout the year, without seasonal variations. • -PTH levels in obesity are independent of vitamin D status and do not appear to represent secondary hyperparathyroidism.

Abstract
It is well established today that an optimal vitamin D intake plays a crucial role in the constitution of optimal osseous mass during childhood, and hence in the prevention of the osteoporosis in adults. The prevalence of the vitamin D deficiency is increasing globally and Algeria is no exception in this regard. Our study is the first to be carried out with healthy children of preschool age in North Africa. AIMS The study aimed to evaluate the vitamin D status of a pediatric population, during all four seasons of the year, living in the north of Algeria, as well as to estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, identifying the potential risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS This was an analytic and cross-sectional study carried out between March 2014 and March 2016 with healthy preschool infants from an urban environment in the town of Hussein Dey. A total of 1016 infants aged 9-72 months were included during this period. The consensual threshold value was 20ng/mL. RESULTS The sex ratio was of 1.47 (535 boys/481 girls) and the average age of the children was 36.5±1.79 months. The daily average calcium ratio was 395±23 mg/with food contributions in vitamin D at an estimated average of 164 UI/day (4.1μg/day). The average concentration of the total 25-OHD for all four seasons of the year was 18.6±10.4ng/mL with an average rate of parathyroid hormone (PTH) of 30.9±14.6pg/mL. There was a highly significant inverse correlation between the serum level of vitamin D and PTH (r=-0.57; P=0.0001), the point of inflection was situated at 34.1ng/mL. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency follows a seasonal variation that is statistically significant (P=0.0001), and the prevalence is higher during the autumn-winter period. The risk factors identified by multiple logistic regression were autumn-winter season (OR: 7; 95% CI: 3-11; P=0.001), age less than 24 months (OR: 3.8; 95% CI: 3.4-4.4; P=0.0001), high body mass index (OR: 2; 95% CI: 1.2-3.2; P=0.3), darker skin pigmentation (OR: 2.8; 95% CI: 2.2-5.2; P=0.001), duration of sunlight exposure less than 15min (OR: 6.1; 95% CI: 3.6-10.2; P=0.0001), low socioeconomic status (OR: 3.9; 95% CI: 1.5-4.3; P=0.01), calcium intake lower than 500 mg/day (OR: 2.5; 95% CI: 1.8-6; P=0.001), and a weekly dietary intake of vitamin D lower than 200 UI (OR: 2.6; 95% CI: 1.6-4.2; P=0.02). DISCUSSION No studies have been conducted in north Africa or Algeria concerning healthy preschool children; however, this population has a rapid growth rate and deserves special attention. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the children of this study was higher than that reported in studies of children of the same age living in Europe or America, despite the fact that Algeria is closer to the equator (36° latitude north). CONCLUSION The changes experienced by Algerian society and the shorter exposure of the population to the sun call for more efforts regarding the detection and treatment of vitamin D deficiency, as well as an update of the vitamin D supplementation schedule.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Obesity is associated with cardiometabolic risk factors and with Vitamin D deficiency. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between 25(OH)D concentrations and cardiometabolic risk factors in adolescents with severe obesity. SUBJECTS/METHODS A cross-sectional clinical assessment (body mass index, fat mass index, fat-free mass index, waist-to-height ratio, and blood pressure) and metabolic study (triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, leptin, calcium, phosphorous, calcidiol, and PTH) were carried out in 236 adolescents diagnosed with severe obesity (BMI z-score > 3.0, 99th percentile), aged 10.2-15.8 years. The criteria of the US Endocrine Society were used for the definition of Vitamin D status. RESULTS Subjects with Vitamin D deficiency had significantly elevated values (p < 0.05) for BMI z-score, waist circumference, waist z-score, body fat percentage, fat mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, insulin, HOMA-IR, leptin, and PTH than subjects with normal Vitamin D status. There was a significant negative correlation (p < 0.05) of serum 25(OH)D levels with body fat percentage, FMI, systolic BP, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-C, glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, leptin, and PTH. CONCLUSIONS Low Vitamin D levels in adolescents with severe obesity were significantly associated with some cardiometabolic risk factors, including body mass index, waist circumference, fat mass index, high blood pressure, impaired lipid profile, and insulin resistance.

Abstract
Background and Objective: Different metabolic phenotypes of obesity are related to cardiometabolic risk factors in children and adolescents. Vitamin D, as one important factor, could be related to different subgroups of metabolic obesity and might affect metabolic disorders. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration and subsets of metabolic phenotypes of obesity in children and adolescents. Methods: This nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted in the framework of the fifth survey of a national surveillance program, the CASPIAN study. Overall, 2,594 students aged 7-18 years were assessed for 25-hydroxyvitamin D status. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was defined according to the ATP III criteria modified for the pediatric age group. Participants were classified into four metabolic phenotypes of obesity according to categories of the BMI and metabolic status: "metabolically healthy obese" (MHO), "metabolically non-healthy non-obese" (MNHNO), "metabolically non-healthy obese" (MNHO), and "metabolically healthy non-obese" (MHNO). Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed for evaluating the association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D status with different metabolic phenotypes of obesity. Results: In this study, 85.2% of participants were classified as MHNO, 11.0 % as MHO, 2.5% as MNHNO, and 1.3% as MNHO. The frequency of hypovitaminosis D was more prevalent in MNHO (85.3%) than in other phenotypes (MHNO: 70%; MHO: 76.5%; MNHNO: 78.1%, respectively; p < 0.05). In the multivariate model, hypovitaminosis D significantly increased the odds of being MHO (OR: 1.46; 95% CI: 1.07-1.77) and MNHO (OR: 2.89; 1.05-8.31) compared to the healthy group. Likewise, in multivariate model, per each unit (ng/mL) increment in 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration, the odds of MNHNO and MNHO decreased significantly by 7% (OR: 0.93; 0.91-0.96) and 6% (OR: 0.94; 0.91-0.98) respectively. Conclusion: Our results support the hypothesis that 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration is associated with metabolic obesity phenotypes. Longitudinal studies are necessary to assess the clinical impacts of this finding.

Abstract
There is little evidence on the efficacy of various vitamin D supplementation strategies in reversing metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adolescents. The present study aims to fill this gap. A total of 535 (243/292) out of 650 apparently healthy Saudi adolescents were randomly selected from the Vitamin D School Project database which has baseline and post-intervention information of more than 1000 Saudi adolescents 12-18 years old attending 34 schools in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from Nov 2014-May 2015. Allocation of intervention was done in 3 groups using cluster randomization: vitamin D tablet, 1000IU/day (N = 180; 69 boys, 111 girls); vitamin D fortified milk consumption, 200 ml/day, 40IU/100 ml (N = 189; 93 boys, 96 girls) and control (educational awareness) (N = 166; 81 boys, 85 girls). All groups were given educational awareness on how to increase vitamin D levels. All groups were matched for BMI and analysis adjusted for age. Post-intervention and using intent-to-treat approach, within-group analysis revealed a statistically significant increase in 25(OH)D levels in all groups, and a clinically significant increase in favor of the tablet group (between-group) [10.7 nmol/l (34.7%) versus 6.3 nmol/l (19.8%) in milk and 2.1 nmol/l (7.0%) in control; p < 0.001], adjusted for age and BMI-matched. Between group analysis also revealed a clinically significant decrease in triglycerides (p = 0.05), glucose (p < 0.001) and systolic blood pressure (p = 0.005) as well as a clinically significant increase in HDL-cholesterol (p = 0.004) over time, all in favor of the tablet group. Within-group comparison showed a significant decrease in the incidence of MetS in the tablet group (9.4% versus 4.4%; p < 0.05) only. In conclusion, oral vitamin D supplementation is superior to vitamin D fortified milk in improving vitamin D status. Reduction in the incidence of MetS in the Arab adolescent population secondary to vitamin D correction may be dose-dependent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is associated with vitamin D deficiency. The aim of this work is to analyze the changes in vitamin D status and PTH levels in a group of children with obesity receiving combined intervention program in order to get BMI status reduction. METHODS Longitudinal study in 119 children with obesity, aged 9.1-13.9 years, included in a 1-year combined dietary-behavioral-physical activity intervention. Anthropometric measurements (weight, height, BMI and fat mass index) were registered every 3 months and blood testing (calcium, phosphorous, 25(OH)D and PTH) were collected at the beginning and after 12 months of follow-up. A control group was recruited (300 healthy children, aged 8.1-13.9 years). The criteria of the US Endocrine Society were used for the definition of hypovitaminosis D. RESULTS Vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher in obesity group (31.1 vs. 14%). There was negative correlation between 25(OH)D and fat mass index (r = -0.361, p = 0.001). Patients with BMI reduction throughout combined intervention were 52 (43.7%). There was a significant increase in the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in patients without BMI reduction at the end of follow-up, but in those patients with BMI reduction there was no changes of vitamin D status. CONCLUSIONS Obesity increases the prevalence of suboptimal vitamin D status, and a BMI status reduction in children with obesity may be required to at least stabilize vitamin D status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Indoor fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) is linked to asthma morbidity; however, whether vitamin D status influences individual susceptibility to airborne exposures is unclear. OBJECTIVE We aimed to determine if vitamin D modifies the effects of indoor PM2.5 on asthma symptoms in urban children. METHODS A total of 120 children aged 5 to 12 years with physician-diagnosed asthma were evaluated at baseline and every 3 months for 9 months. Indoor PM2.5, serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OH D) levels, and asthma symptoms were simultaneously assessed at each time point. Adjusting for confounders, generalized estimating equations assessed the 3-way interaction effects of 25-OH D, obesity, and PM on asthma symptoms. RESULTS Children were of mean (standard deviation [SD]) age 9.7 (2.2) years, 36% were obese, and 95% self-reported black race. Mean (SD) PM2.5 indoor exposure was 38.2 (42.9) μg/m3 and 25-OH D was 19.1 (7.5) ng/mL. Three-way interaction models demonstrated significantly greater PM2.5-associated effects on daytime asthma symptoms only among obese children with low 25-OH D levels (odds ratio [OR]PM2.5 = 1.26, P = .049 at vitamin D = 15.5 ng/mL, increasingly stronger PM effects at levels <15.5 ng/mL). In homes with increased PM2.5, higher 25-OH D was associated with decreased symptom odds (eg, ORVitamin D = 0.87; P = .049 at PM2.5 = 52.5 μg/m3, increasingly protective effects >52.5 μg/m3) among obese children. CONCLUSIONS Among obese urban children with asthma, low individual 25-OH D enhanced adverse respiratory effects associated with indoor PM2.5. In high PM2.5 environments, 25-OH D was protective against asthma symptoms. Optimizing vitamin D status in children may help reduce asthma morbidity driven by indoor air pollution.

Abstract
Background The appropriate dose of vitamin D supplementation in children is still debated. We calculated that the recommended dose of 600–1000 IU vitamin D3/day is not sufficient to reach a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) level of at least 30 ng/ml (75 nmol/l) in north Italian children > 12 months. The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of seasonal supplementation with 1500 IU (=37.5 μg) vitamin D3/day. Methods DINOS (D-vitamIN Oral Supplementation) study was a pilot, monocentric, non-random case-control register study. It was conducted in a paediatric primary care setting near Padova (North Italy, 45°N latitude). The data of 203 children (girls:boys 1:1,33) aged 2–15 years, collected between November 2010 and January 2015, were analysed. Active group A (n = 82) were given 1500 IU vitamin D3/day from November to April; control Group B (n = 121) received no supplementation. The serum 25-OH-D test was part of a laboratory tests panel and performed using a chemiluminescence immunoassay method. Results Serum 25-OH-D mean level + standard deviation throughout the period was 32 + 13 ng/ml (80 + 32 nmol/l) in group A vs 22 + 10 ng/ml (55 + 25 nmol/l) in group B. In group A 12% had vitamin D deficiency 25-OH-D < 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/l) and 1.2% severe vitamin D deficiency 25-OH-D < 10 ng/ml (25 nmol/l). In group B 46% had vitamin D deficiency and 9% severe deficiency (P < 0.001). In group A mean levels were normal or near-normal all the year except in May. Group B reached mean 25-OH-D levels close to 30 ng/ml (75 nmol/l) only in late summer. The active group mean 25-OH-D level was normal in preschoolers and schoolers but not in adolescents. Non-white children had a three-times vitamin D deficiency probability despite supplementation. Conclusions Vitamin D supplementation with at least 1500 IU vitamin D3/day from November to April was found appropriate for children in North Italy. A prolongation until May could be useful. Higher doses and/or prolonged periods could be more appropriate especially in adolescents and in non-white children. Study registration DINOS gained the approval of Padova Ethics Committee (n. 3960/U16/2016). Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency is a pandemic problem in children and adolescents in the United States. The problem may be aggravated by the inconsistent implementation of current clinical practice guidelines for vitamin D management by pediatric primary care providers. This study examines the relationship between primary care providers' prescribing vitamin D to children ages 1 through 18 years and their practice actions and knowledge. A descriptive correlation design was used. Participants were recruited from a purposive sample of pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners through an online invitation to participate in a survey. Reliability and validity was established for the survey developed by the principal investigator using a web-based Delphi technique. Results from this study indicate that although most providers are aware that vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency are problems, fewer than half currently recommend 600- to 1,000-IU supplementation to their patients ages 1 through 18 years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D is conventionally known as sunshine vitamin and is synthesized endogenously in sunlight. Vitamin D is known to be a key regulator of bone metabolism, the function of genes, and essential for the development of the whole body. Deficiency of Vitamin D is now become a major worldwide epidemic health problem. AIM The present study was conducted with the objective of determining the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in urban population of a district in south Punjab, across various characteristics of population such as gender, age, and socioeconomic status. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional population survey was conducted in the urban population of the district. A total of 120 healthy volunteers of either sex participated and their 25-hydroxy Vitamin D concentrations in serum samples were estimated using ELISA. The participants were divided into three categories as follows: Vitamin D deficient, insufficient, or sufficient, on the basis of normal standardized serum levels of Vitamin D <20, 20-30, and >30 ng/ml, respectively. RESULTS Of 120 healthy individuals, 95% of the study participants had VDD or insufficiency and only 5% had adequate Vitamin D levels. In each age group, females showed lower Vitamin D levels as compared to males. Furthermore, high body mass index value was associated with low Vitamin D. Upper-class individuals also showed low levels of Vitamin D as compared to other socioeconomic classes' individuals. CONCLUSIONS Overall, high prevalence of VDD among the apparently healthy urban population of the district was observed and gives an alarming sign about continuously increasing prevalence of hypovitaminosis D among healthy population.

Abstract
Vitamin D concentrations corresponding to 75 nmol/L 25(OH)D have been associated with maintained muscle function, growth and regeneration, optimal bone health and immunology in athletes. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence and predictors of insufficient 25(OH)D concentrations in athletes. Six hundred three Swiss athletes were assessed. 25(OH)D was analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A standardized questionnaire was used to gather information about potential predictors for 25(OH)D concentrations; 50.5% showed insufficient 25(OH)D concentrations. Differences in predicted probability of insufficient 25(OH)D were found for those vitamin D supplemented (42%) versus not supplemented (52%), in those performing indoor (58%) versus outdoor sports (43%), and during the sun-deprived seasons of fall (49%), winter (70%) and spring (57%) compared with summer (17%). Higher BMI z-scores and age were associated with higher 25(OH)D concentrations. In conclusion, insufficient 25(OH)D concentrations were common among athletes especially at a younger age, among those not supplemented, in athletes who trained indoors, and during the sun-deprived seasons. Because the prevalence of insufficient 25(OH)D concentrations in this study was high, regular supplementation in athletes may be indicated, except perhaps during the summer season. Further research is needed to determine which 25(OH)D concentrations lead to optimal health and performance in athletes.

AbstractObjectiveTo explore determinants of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (s-25(OH)D) during autumn in young, Caucasian children not consuming vitamin D-fortified foods or supplements, and explore differences in sun behaviours between pre-school and school children.DesignIn September–October, s-25(OH)D was measured by LC–MS/MS; physical activity, sun behaviours and vitamin D intake were assessed with questionnaires.SettingBaseline data from the ODIN Junior trial at 55°N.SubjectsChildren aged 4–8 years (n130), of whom 96% gave blood samples.ResultsMean s-25(OH)D was 56·8 (sd12·5) nmol/l and positively associated with fat-free mass index (P=0·014). Children being active 6–7 h/week had 5·6 (95% CI 1·1, 10·0) nmol/l higher s-25(OH)D than less active children (P=0·014). Children seeking shade sometimes or rarely/never had 7·0 (95% CI 1·2, 12·9;P=0·018) and 7·2 (95% CI 0·8, 13·6;P=0·028) nmol/l higher s-25(OH)D, respectively, than children always/often seeking shade. Pre-school children had more sun-safe behaviour than school children in terms of use of a hat, sunscreen and sunscreen sun protection factor (P<0·05). In school but not pre-school children, using a hat rarely/never was associated with 12·1 (95% CI 2·5, 21·7;P=0·014) nmol/l higher s-25(OH)Dv. always/often (Pinteraction=0·019). Vitamin D intake was not associated with s-25(OH)D (P=0·241).ConclusionsPhysical activity and sun behaviours are associated with s-25(OH)D in young children. Identifying factors influencing autumn s-25(OH)D is relevant to optimize levels before sun exposure diminishes. Strategies to reduce risk of inadequacy should consider risk of skin cancer and sunburn, and could include fortification and/or vitamin D supplementation.

Abstract
Background Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] has been associated with unfavorable cardiometabolic risk profiles in many observational studies in children, but very few randomized controlled trials have investigated this. Objective We explored the effect of winter-time cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) supplementation on cardiometabolic risk markers in young, white, 4- to 8-y-old healthy Danish children (55°N) as part of the pan-European ODIN project. Methods In the ODIN Junior double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-response trial, 119 children (mean ± SD age: 6.7 ± 1.5 y; 36% male; 82% normal weight) were randomly allocated to 0, 10 or 20 µg/d of vitamin D3 for 20 wk (October-March). Cardiometabolic risk markers including BMI-for-age z score (BMIz), waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, serum triglycerides and cholesterol (total, LDL, HDL, and total:HDL), plasma glucose and insulin, and whole-blood glycated hemoglobin were measured at baseline and endpoint as secondary outcomes together with serum 25(OH)D. Intervention effects were evaluated in linear regression models as between-group differences at endpoint adjusted for baseline value of the outcome, and additionally for age, sex, baseline serum 25(OH)D, BMIz, time since breakfast, and breakfast content. Results Mean ± SD serum 25(OH)D was 56.7 ± 12.3 nmol/L at baseline and differed between groups at endpoint with concentrations of 31.1 ± 7.5, 61.8 ± 10.6, and 75.8 ± 11.5 nmol/L in the 0-, 10-, and 20 µg/d groups, respectively (P < 0.0001). Vitamin D3 supplementation had no effect on any of the cardiometabolic risk markers in analyses adjusted for baseline value of the outcome (all P ≥ 0.05), and additional covariate adjustment did not change the results notably. Conclusions Preventing the winter decline in serum 25(OH)D with daily vitamin D3 supplementation of 10 or 20 µg had no cardiometabolic effects in healthy 4- to 8-y-old Danish children. Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent among childhood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients and associated with inferior survival at 100 days after transplantation. Achieving and maintaining therapeutic vitamin D levels in HSCT recipients is extremely challenging in the first 3 to 6 months after transplantation due to poor compliance in the setting of mucositis and the concomitant use of critical transplantation drugs that interfere with vitamin D absorption. We sought to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a single, ultra-high-dose of vitamin D given before childhood HSCT to maintain levels in a therapeutic range during the peritransplantation period. Ten HSCT recipients with pretransplantation 25-OH vitamin D (25OHD) level <50 ng/mL and with no history of hypercalcemia, nephrolithiasis, or pathological fractures were enrolled on this pilot study. A single enteral vitamin D dose (maximum 600,000 IU) was administered to each patient based on weight and pretransplantation vitamin D level before the day of HSCT. Vitamin D levels between 30 and 150 ng/mL were considered therapeutic. All patients received close clinical observation and monitoring of 25OHD levels, calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone, urine calcium/creatinine ratio, and n-telopeptide for safety and efficacy assessment. The mean age of the study subjects was 5.8 ± 4.9 years, and the mean pretransplantation 25OHD level was 28.9 ± 13.1 ng/mL. All patients tolerated single, ultra-high-oral dose of vitamin D under direct medical supervision. No other oral vitamin D supplements were administered during the observation window of 8 weeks. Three of 10 patients received 400 IU/day of vitamin D in parenteral nutrition only for 5 days during the study window. A mean peak serum vitamin D level of 80.4 ± 28.6 ng/mL was reached at a median of 9 days after the vitamin D dose. All patients achieved a therapeutic vitamin D level of >30 ng/mL. Mean vitamin D levels were sustained at or above 30 ng/mL during the 8-week observation window. There were no electrolyte abnormalities attributed to the ultra-high-dose of vitamin D. Most patients had mildly elevated urine calcium/creatinine ratios during treatment, but none showed clinical or radiologic signs of nephrocalcinosis or nephrolithiasis. Our findings indicate that single ultra-high-oral dose vitamin D treatment given just before HSCT is safe and well tolerated in the immediate peritransplant period in children. Patients in our study were able to achieve and sustain therapeutic vitamin D levels throughout the critical period during which vitamin D insufficiency is associated with decreased overall survival. Larger prospective studies are needed to address the impact of single ultra-high-dose vitamin D treatment on HSCT outcomes.

Abstract
Objectives Obese, African-American (AA) adolescents are at increased risk for vitamin D deficiency. The primary objective of this pilot study was to examine the effect of vitamin D supplementation upon 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD) levels in obese, AA adolescents. Methods A randomized, double-blinded, controlled pilot study included 26 obese (BMI ≥ 95%ile), vitamin D deficient (25OHD < 20 ng/mL), pubertal AA adolescents (ages 12-17). Subjects received cholecalciferol 1000 IU or 5000 IU daily for 3 months. Serum 25OHD, vitamin D binding protein, parathyroid hormone, and cardiometabolic risk markers were obtained at baseline and post-treatment. Results Of 39 subjects enrolled, 26 (67%) were vitamin D deficient (mean 25OHD 12.0 ± 3.8 ng/mL) at baseline and were randomized, with 22 completing the study. Sex, age, season, pubertal stage, BMI, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and 25OHD were similar at baseline between the 1000 IU and 5000 IU groups. Post-treatment, 25OHD increased less in the 1000 IU group (5.6 ng/mL, p = 0.03) vs. the 5000 IU group (15.6 ng/mL, p = 0.002). 83% of the 5000 IU group and 30% of the 1000 IU group reached post-treatment 25OHD ≥ 20 ng/mL (p = 0.01); 50% of the 5000 IU group, but no subject from the 1000 IU group, achieved 25OHD ≥ 30 ng/mL (p = 0.009). We detected no group differences in mineral metabolites or cardiometabolic risk markers following supplementation. Conclusions Cholecalciferol dosing in excess of the current Institute of Medicine dietary reference intakes was required to achieve 25OHD levels ≥20 ng/mL in obese, AA adolescents. Supplementation of 5000 IU may be required to achieve the desired goal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) play a crucial role in calcium homeostasis and bone health of children. Serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) is considered to be the most accurate marker for vitamin D status. However, there have only been a few studies, with limited number of subjects, investigating the relationship between 25-OHD and parathyroid hormone (PTH) in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the seasonal 25-OHD levels and its associations with intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) in Turkish children at all pediatric ages; and then to define a critical decision threshold level for 25-OHD deficiency in Turkish children. METHODS A retrospective record review of 90,042 children, was performed on serum 25-OHD and for 3525 iPTH levels. They were measured by mass spectrometry method and by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay simultaneously. RESULTS 25-OHD levels showed a sinusoidal fluctuation througout the year; being significantly higher in summer and autumn (p < 0,01). 25-OHD levels decreased with respect to age. The significant inverse relationship that was found between iPTH and 25-OHD suggests that the inflection point of serum 25-OHD level for maximal suppression of PTH is at 30 ng/ml. CONCLUSION As the rate of vitamin D deficiency decreases in the early years due to vitamin D supplementation, the recommendation should be set due to a clinical threshold level of 30 ng/ml for 25-OHD based on PTH levels in children of our population.

Abstract
This observational retrospective cross-sectional and case-controlled study measures levels of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-OH-VD) in pediatric cancer survivors at different intervals and assesses the effect of 2 supplementation regimens over a period of 12 months. Sixty-eight patients were included in this quasi-experimental study, of which 32 were boys and 36 were girls. A control group of 30 healthy children were included. It was found that initial 25-OH-VD levels were insufficient (<30 ng/mL) in 61 patients (89.7%). Yet, no significant difference between the levels of 25-OH-VD in these patients as compared with the healthy control group was evidenced. However, 25-OH-VD levels were significantly higher at 18 months in patients who were supplemented with oral 50,000 IU/month vitamin D during the 12 months in comparison with patients supplemented with 1000 IU/day. Our findings indicate that pediatric cancer survivors who require frequent monitoring of their 25-OH-VD levels yielded better results when supplemented with higher doses of vitamin D over longer periods of time. A course of oral vitamin D supplementation regimen of 50,000 IU/month gave effective results with excellent compliance and no reports of any adverse or harmful effects.

Abstract
Vitamin D is a unique nutrient. First, it acts as a pro-hormone and secondly, the requirement for vitamin D can be met by both endogenous synthesis from sunlight and by dietary sources. This complicates the determination of dietary requirements for vitamin D, which along with the definition of optimal vitamin D status, have been highly controversial and much debated over recent years. Adolescents are a population group at high risk of low vitamin D status, which is concerning given the important role of vitamin D, and calcium, in promoting normal bone mineralisation and attainment of peak bone mass during this rapid growth phase. Dietary vitamin D recommendations are important from a public health perspective in helping to avoid deficiency and optimise vitamin D status for health. However limited experimental data from winter-based dose-response randomised trials in adolescents has hindered the development of evidence-based dietary requirements for vitamin D in this population group. This review will highlight how specifically designed randomised trials and the approach adopted for estimating such requirements can lead to improved recommendations. Such data indicate that vitamin D intakes of between 10 and about 30 µg/d may be required to avoid deficiency and ensure adequacy in adolescents, considerably greater than the current recommendations of 10-15 µg/d. Finally this review will consider the implications of this on public health policy, in terms of future refinements of vitamin D requirement recommendations and prioritisation of public health strategies to help prevent vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is limited knowledge on vitamin D status of children residing in the Andes and its association with undernutrition. We evaluated the vitamin D status of children residing in a low socio-economic status (SES) setting in the Ecuadorian Andes and assessed the association between vitamin D status, stunting and underweight. We hypothesized that children who were underweight would have lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and lower 25(OH)D levels would be associated with a higher risk of stunting. DESIGN We conducted a cross-sectional secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial, the Vitamin A, Zinc and Pneumonia study. Children had serum 25(OH)D concentrations measured. A sensitivity analysis was undertaken to determine a vitamin D cut-off specific for our endpoints. Associations between serum 25(OH)D and underweight (defined as weight-for-age Z-score≤-1) and stunting (defined as height-for-age Z-score≤-2) were assessed using multivariate logistic regression. SETTING Children residing in five low-SES peri-urban neighbourhoods near Quito, Ecuador. SUBJECTS Children (n 516) aged 6-36 months. RESULTS Mean serum 25(OH)D concentration was 58·0 (sd 17·7) nmol/l. Sensitivity analysis revealed an undernutrition-specific 25(OH)D cut-off of <42·5 nmol/l; 18·6 % of children had serum 25(OH)D<42·5 nmol/l. Children who were underweight were more likely to have serum 25(OH)D<42·5 nmol/l (adjusted OR (aOR)=2·0; 95 % CI 1·2, 3·3). Children with low serum 25(OH)D levels were more likely to be stunted (aOR=2·8; 95 % CI 1·6, 4·7). CONCLUSIONS Low serum 25(OH)D levels were more common in underweight and stunted Ecuadorian children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Perinatally HIV-infected (PHIV) children have, on average, lower bone mineral density (BMD) than perinatally HIV-exposed uninfected (PHEU) and healthy children. Low 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] and elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations may lead to suboptimal bone accrual. METHODS PHIV and PHEU children in the Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study had total body (TB) and lumbar spine (LS) BMD and bone mineral content (BMC) measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry; BMD z-scores (BMDz) were calculated for age and sex. Low 25(OH)D was defined as ≤20 ng/mL and high PTH as >65 pg/mL. We fit linear regression models to estimate the average adjusted differences in BMD/BMC by 25(OH)D and PTH status and log binomial models to determine adjusted prevalence ratios of low 25(OH)D and high PTH in PHIV relative to PHEU children. RESULTS PHIV children (n = 412) were older (13.0 vs. 10.8 years) and more often black (76% vs. 64%) than PHEU (n = 207). Among PHIV, children with low 25(OH)D had lower TB-BMDz [SD, -0.38; 95% confidence interval (CI), -0.60 to -0.16] and TB-BMC (SD, -59.1 g; 95% CI, -108.3 to -9.8); high PTH accompanied by low 25(OH)D was associated with lower TB-BMDz. Among PHEU, children with low 25(OH)D had lower TB-BMDz (SD, -0.34; 95% CI, -0.64 to -0.03). Prevalence of low 25(OH)D was similar by HIV status (adjusted prevalence ratio, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.81 to 1.24). High PTH was 3.17 (95% CI, 1.25 to 8.06) times more likely in PHIV children. CONCLUSIONS PHIV and PHEU children with low 25(OH)D may have lower BMD. Vitamin D supplementation trials during critical periods of bone accrual are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The changes in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in adolescents from summer to winter and optimal serum vitamin D levels in the summer to ensure adequate vitamin D levels at the end of winter are currently unknown. This study was conducted to address this knowledge gap. METHODS The study was conducted as a cohort study. Sixty-eight participants aged 7-18 years and who had sufficient vitamin D levels at the end of the summer in 2011 were selected using stratified random sampling. Subsequently, the participants' vitamin D levels were measured at the end of the winter in 2012. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine optimal cutoff points for vitamin D at the end of the summer to predict sufficient vitamin D levels at the end of the winter. RESULTS The results indicated that 89.7% of all the participants had a decrease in vitamin D levels from summer to winter: 14.7% of them were vitamin D-deficient, 36.8% had insufficient vitamin D concentrations and only 48.5% where able to maintain sufficient vitamin D. The optimal cutoff point to provide assurance of sufficient serum vitamin D at the end of the winter was 40 ng/mL at the end of the summer. Sex, age and vitamin D levels at the end of the summer were significant predictors of non-sufficient vitamin D at the end of the winter. CONCLUSIONS In this age group, a dramatic reduction in vitamin D was observed over the follow-up period. Sufficient vitamin D at the end of the summer did not guarantee vitamin D sufficiency at the end of the winter. We found 40 ng/mL as an optimal cutoff point.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Investigation into the role of vitamin D in fractures in the pediatric population has been limited despite estimates that as many as 70% of American children have inadequate vitamin D levels (measured as 25-hydroxyvitamin D, 25(OH)D). The purpose of this study was to evaluate vitamin D's role in pediatric fracture risk by comparing 25(OH)D between fractured and nonfractured cohorts. METHODS A 12-month prospective case-control study was completed in children aged 2 to 14 years in an urban, academic hospital. Sixty fractured children requiring conscious sedation or general anesthesia for management were compared with 60 nonfractured controls. All participants and their guardians were surveyed for low bone density risk factors, and total serum 25(OH)D was measured. Statistical analysis was completed using Student t tests, χ tests, analysis of variance, and logistic regression models. RESULTS After controlling for age and daily sun exposure, lower total serum 25(OH)D was associated with higher fracture risk (odds ratio=0.94; 95% confidence interval, 0.90-0.99; P=0.023). In the fractured cohort, 6 (10%) patients were deficient (25(OH)D<20 ng/mL) and 33 (55%) were insufficient (25(OH)D, 20 to 30 ng/mL). Of the nonfractured population, 8 (13%) were deficient and 19 (32%) were insufficient. There were more insufficient patients in the fractured than in the nonfractured cohort (odds ratio=2.99; 95% confidence interval, 1.27-7.0; P=0.037). CONCLUSIONS Higher fracture incidence is associated with serum 25(OH)D insufficiency. Hypovitaminosis D may place the pediatric population at increased risk for fracture. Consideration should be given to routine assessment of vitamin D in fractured children. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Prognostic level III-prospective case-control study.

Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the association of vitamin D level with insulin resistance, among healthy student’s obese women, and to identify factors that may elucidate this association. Methods: One hundred and forty-seven female students between the age group of 18 and 25 years were included in this cross-sectional study, and the related socio-demographic and anthropometric data were obtained. They were selected randomly from Aljouf University, Sakaka, Saudi Arabia between November 2013 and June 2014. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25[OH]D), glucose, insulin was measured and insulin resistance was calculated using the insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR). Results: The results showed the percentage of 25[OH]D concentration in female students was 21.3% sufficient, 59.6% mild deficiency, and 19.3% moderate deficiency. The percentage of waist circumferences (WC) were 41.3% (>88 cm) and 58.7% (<88 cm), body mass index (BMI) was 13.6% (obese) and 31.8% (over weight), blood pressure (BP) was 65.7% (<130/85 mm Hg), and 33.2% (>130/85 mm Hg). Based on the cut-off point of 25[OH]D, 17.4% of females had 25[OH]D deficiency, 27.3% insufficient, and 55.3% sufficient. When the females were classified according to the BMI category, the serum 25[OH]D concentrations for obese was the lowest value (54.6%) when compared with the overweight (31.8%) and normal weight (0.9%). 25[OH]D was inversely associated with BMI, fat%, and HOMA-IR. Conclusion: Our results suggest that vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in women of Saudi who are university students especially in those who are obese. Preventive interventions in order to reduce the tendency of deficiency among college students should focus on the awareness of the essentiality of vitamin D promotion of direct exposure to sunlight (vitamin D3) and consumption of vitamin D fortified food as a part of Saudi diets.

Abstract
Objetivo Analizar la prevalencia de hipovitaminosis D y factores asociados en escolares y adolescentes residentes en una región del norte peninsular. Diseño Estudio descriptivo transversal (muestreo de conveniencia). Emplazamiento Atención primaria. Participantes Fueron incluidos 602 sujetos sanos de raza caucásica con edades comprendidas entre 3,1 y 15,4 años. Mediciones principales Se ha calculado la prevalencia de hipovitaminosis D (variable dependiente) según los criterios de la US Endocrine Society: deficiencia (calcidiol < 20 ng/ml), insuficiencia (calcidiol: 20-29 ng/ml) y suficiencia (calcidiol ≥ 30 ng/ml). Se han registrado como variables independientes: sexo, edad, índice de masa corporal, lugar de residencia y estación del año, analizándose su asociación con la hipovitaminosis D mediante regresión logística múltiple. Resultados La prevalencia de hipovitaminosis D era del 60,4% (insuficiencia: 44,6%; deficiencia: 15,8%). Las variables asociadas con la hipovitaminosis D eran el sexo femenino (OR: 1,6; IC 95%: 1,1-2,3), la edad puberal (OR: 1,8; IC 95%: 1,2-2,6), las estaciones de otoño (OR: 9,5; IC 95%: 4,8-18,7), invierno (OR: 8,8; IC 95%: 4,5-17,5) y primavera (OR: 13,2; IC 95%: 6,4-27,5), el entorno urbano (OR:1,6; IC 95%: 1,1-2,2) y la obesidad severa (OR: 4,4; IC 95%: 1,9-10,3). Conclusiones En la población infantojuvenil existe una alta prevalencia de hipovitaminosis D, y los factores asociados son el sexo femenino, la edad puberal, el otoño, el invierno y la primavera, la obesidad severa y el entorno urbano. Habría que considerar la necesidad de administrar suplementos vitamínicos o ingerir mayores cantidades de sus fuentes dietéticas naturales y/o alimentos enriquecidos durante los meses de otoño, invierno y primavera.

25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels of children are inversely related to adiposity assessed by body mass index. J Physiol Biochem 2017; 74:111-118. Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is associated with wide range of pathologies. Some evidences have shown that low vitamin D circulating levels in children and adolescent are related to fat mass and obesity. The objectives of the present study were to characterize vitamin D status in children and adolescents and to determine if serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration is related to adiposity assessed by body mass index (BMI). Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured by LIAISON method in 471 children and adolescents (2 to 18 years age) and analyzed according to gender, pubertal period, age, and BMI. An overall prevalence of 25(OH)D insufficiency and deficiency was present in the 67.1%. Lower 25(OH)D levels were found in females (25.56 ± 14.03 vs 29.71 ± 17.10 ng ml-1; P = 0.004) and pubertal children (25.52 ± 13.97 vs 29.21 ± 16.83 ng ml-1; P = 0.011). In addition, an inverse relation of BMI and age on 25(OH)D concentrations was observed in children. In conclusion, low vitamin D status was highly prevalent among children and adolescents. Of note, a non-lineal regression model showed that 39.6% of vitamin D levels variability was explained by BMI. These results indicate that adiposity assessed by BMI impacts vitamin D status.

Abstract
Obesity and a low vitamin D (VD) status, as well as a positive association between them, are prevalent worldwide. Additionally, a low VD status has been positively correlated with metabolic dysfunction (although not so convincingly as for obesity). The VD receptor (VDR) mediates VD biological actions in adipose tissue (AT), where VD can be activated or inactivated/degraded through specific hydroxylation steps. Additionally, AT can also store and release VD when needed. A lower VD activation/VD inactivation ratio and an impaired VDR signaling in AT could contribute to metabolic dysfunction besides the aforementioned association between obesity and VD status. However, subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral AT (VAT) are not expected to be similarly accountable as these two fat depots play differential roles in metabolic regulation/dysfunction. To our knowledge, only three articles disclose the evaluation of the expression of VDR and/or VD hydroxylating enzymes in human SAT and VAT. A clear dependence on the subcutaneous and/or the visceral fat depot is missing for the relationships of a) obesity and/or metabolic dysfunction with VD status and b) adipose VDR signaling and adipose VD activation/VD inactivation ratio with VD status, obesity and/or metabolic dysfunction. Further studies are warranted to unravel the influence of adipose VD metabolism on VD status.

Abstract
Objectives Studies in Canada have reported varying prevalences of low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels, but none have been conducted in rural paediatric populations. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of low vitamin D levels in rural communities. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study of children aged 3 to 15 living in Canadian Hutterite communities. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured between October 2008 and April 2009 using a chemiluminescence assay. Predictors of vitamin D levels were evaluated using multivariable linear regression. A multilevel model was used to evaluate the impact of individual, household and colony factors on the variation in vitamin D levels. Results Serum 25(OH)D levels were available on 743 children/adolescents. The median was 62.0 nmol/L (interquartile range 51.0, 74.0). Levels lower than 50 nmol/L and 75 nmol/L were found in 152 (20.5%) and 565 (76%) children, respectively. Adolescents were at highest risk for levels <75 nmol/L (odds ratio 3.38, 95% confidence interval 2.00, 5.80). Age and latitude were negatively correlated with serum 25(OH)D level. In the multilevel model, most of the variation in levels was associated with individual children. Conclusion Low vitamin D levels are a significant problem in rural Hutterite communities in Canada. Adolescents were at greatest risk for low levels and represent an important target group for supplementation. Variation in serum 25(OH)D levels was explained mostly at the individual level. Additional studies are needed to explore factors associated with individuals (e.g., genetics) leading to lower 25(OH)D levels.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Vitamin D deficiency may contribute to endocrine health and disease (diabetes, autoimmune thyroid diseases, polycystic ovarian syndrome, etc.). The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and specific factors for hypovitaminosis D among children stratified by body mass index (BMI) in Northern Spain. Subjects/Methods: A cross-sectional clinical (sex, age, season of study visit, place of residence and BMI) and blood testing (calcium, phosphorous, calcidiol and parathyroid hormone (PTH)) were accomplished in 546 Caucasian individuals (aged 3.2–15.8 years). The BMI (Z-score) allowed establishing four groups: normal, overweight, obesity and severe obesity. The criteria of the US Endocrine Society were used for the definition of hypovitaminosis D. Results: Calcidiol levels were significantly higher in normal and overweight groups (P=0.001), whereas PTH levels were significantly higher in obesity and severe obesity groups (P=0.001). Hypovitaminosis D prevalence was significantly higher in severe obesity (81.1%) and obesity (68.2%) groups, whereas was lowest in overweight (55%) and normal (58.1%) groups (P=0.001). There was a negative correlation between calcidiol and PTH levels (P<0.01). Female (90.9%), adolescent group (88,2%), winter (100%) and autumn (82.4%) time and urban residence (94.1%) imply a higher prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in subjects with severe obesity (P<0.001). Female, puberal age, autumn, winter and spring time, urban residence and severe obesity were found to be independent predictors for hypovitaminosis D. Conclusions: Severe obesity could be considered as an associated factor for vitamin D deficiency, and, owing to its high prevalence, the implementation of systematic screening and hypovitaminosis treatment programs would be particularly useful.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With recognition of the important roles of Vitamin D (VitD) in various physiological processes, increasing attention has been drawn to the status of VitD in early life. However, the VitD status of young children and the related factors in rural areas of Southwestern China remain unclear. This study aimed to explore VitD status and its seasonal variation in 18-month-old children living in rural Southwestern China. The association of VitD with biochemical and anthropometric variables was also investigated. METHODS A total of 177 18-month-old children in a rural area of Yunnan Province, Southwestern China, were enrolled. Serum concentrations of 25-hydroxy Vitamin D (25(OH)D) were measured through high-performance liquid chromatogram-tandem mass spectrometry. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were measured with a chemiluminescence assay. Serum concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were also measured. Anthropometric data and the outdoor activity time of each participant were collected. RESULTS The serum 25(OH)D concentration was 26.61 ± 7.26 ng/ml; concentrations lower than 30 ng/ml accounted for 70.6% of the participants and concentrations lower than 20 ng/ml accounted for 16.4%. The level of serum 25(OH)D was not significantly different among four seasons (P >0.05). A positive relationship was found between 25(OH)D concentration and the time of outdoor activities (r = 0.168, P < 0.05). Serum PTH concentration was negatively correlated with 25(OH)D concentration (r = -0.163, P < 0.05). A positive relationship was found between the serum concentrations of 25(OH)D and calcium (r = 0.154, P < 0.05). No significant association was observed between 25(OH)D and ALP, phosphorus, or anthropometric variables. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of VitD insufficiency is high among young children in the rural Southwestern China regardless of the seasons. VitD supplementation is still essential to maintain VitD sufficiency for children living in rural area.

Abstract
AIM: We aimed to study the relationships between circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], insulin resistance and leptin-to-adiponectin (L/A) ratio in Guadeloupean children and adolescents and to analyse the changes in 25(OH)D levels after a 1-year lifestyle intervention program. METHODS: 25(OH)D concentrations were measured via a chemiluminescence assay. Cardiometabolic risk factors, homoeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and adipokines were measured. The lifestyle intervention included dietary counselling, regular physical activity. RESULTS: Among 117 girls and boys (11–15 years old, 31.6% obese), 40% had vitamin D deficiency (25(OH)D levels < 20 ng/mL). With linear regression models where 25(OH)D and HOMA-IR acted as independent variables and age, sex, BMI, L/A ratio as covariates, 25(OH)D was significantly associated with HOMA-IR alone (P = 0.036). HOMA-IR was also associated with BMI z-score ≥ 2, L/A ratio and an interaction term BMI z-score ≥ 2*L/A ratio (P < 0.001 for all). After one year, in 78 children/adolescent, mean serum 25(OH)D increased significantly from 21.4 ± 4.9 ng/mL at baseline to 23.2 ± 6.0 after 1 year; P = 0.003 whereas BMI z-score, HOMA-IR and L/A ratio decreased significantly (P = 0.003, P < 0.001 and P = 0.012; respectively). CONCLUSION: The association between 25(OH)D and HOMA-IR, independently of obesity and the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency should be considered in order to prevent the later incidence of T2DM. A healthy lifestyle including non-sedentary and outdoor activities could be a way for improving vitamin D status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents are a population group at high risk of low vitamin D status, yet the evidence base for establishing dietary vitamin D requirements remains weak. OBJECTIVE The aim was to establish the distribution of vitamin D intakes required to maintain serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations above proposed cutoffs (25, 30, 40, and 50 nmol/L) during winter in white males and females (14-18 y of age) in the United Kingdom (51°N). DESIGN In a dose-response trial, 110 adolescents (aged 15.9 ± 1.4 y; 43% males) were randomly assigned to receive 0, 10, or 20 μg vitamin D3 supplements/d for 20 wk during winter. A nonlinear regression model was fit to total vitamin D intake and postintervention serum 25(OH)D concentrations, and regression-predicted values estimated the vitamin D intakes required to maintain serum 25(OH)D concentrations above specific cutoffs. RESULTS Mean ± SD serum 25(OH)D concentrations increased from 49.2 ± 12.0 to 56.6 ± 12.4 nmol/L and from 51.7 ± 13.4 to 63.9 ± 10.6 nmol/L in the 10- and 20-μg/d groups, respectively, and decreased in the placebo group from 46.8 ± 11.4 to 30.7 ± 8.6 nmol/L (all P ≤ 0.001). Vitamin D intakes required to maintain 25(OH)D concentrations >25 and >30 nmol/L in 97.5% of adolescents were estimated to be 10.1 and 13.1 μg/d, respectively, and 6.6 μg/d to maintain 50% of adolescents at concentrations >40 nmol/L. Because the response of 25(OH)D reached a plateau at 46 nmol/L, there is uncertainty in estimating the vitamin D intake required to maintain 25(OH)D concentrations >50 nmol/L in 97.5% of adolescents, but it exceeded 30 μg/d. CONCLUSION Vitamin D intakes between 10 and ∼30 μg/d are required by white adolescents during winter to maintain serum 25(OH)D concentrations >25-50 nmol/L, depending on the serum 25(OH)D threshold chosen. Abstract
BACKGROUND The role played by vitamin D in atopic dermatitis is controversial and has been the focus of many studies. The ultraviolet index has not been considered in this type of research. OBJECTIVES The objectives of the study were to assess 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] serum level in atopic dermatitis patients and control group, to investigate the association between atopic dermatitis clinical severity (using the SCORing Atopic Dermatitis index - SCORAD) and 25(OH)D serum levels, and to evaluate the independent predictors, including Ultraviolet index, SCORAD and 25(OH)D. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study of 106 atopic dermatitis patients. A control group was matched with a subsample of 54 participants with atopic dermatitis. SCORAD index, laboratory tests, and local Ultraviolet index were assessed. RESULTS The atopic dermatitis patients had serum 25(OH)D levels and mean UVI significantly higher than the control group. Immunoglobulin E and Ultraviolet index were associated with the SCORAD index. Skin type, age and Ultraviolet index were independent predictors of 25(OH)D. CONCLUSIONS Although statistically significant, the different levels of 25(OH)D between the paired groups may be attributed to the higher mean Ultraviolet index in atopic dermatitis patients. Since Ultraviolet index is an independent predictor of SCORAD index and of 25(OH)D level, it may work as a confounding factor in studies involving atopic dermatitis and 25(OH)D and must be considered in this kind of research.

Abstract
AIM Low vitamin D levels have been associated with obesity and living in areas that lack sunshine, such as northern Europe. The aim of this study was to investigate the vitamin D status of a group of obese children in Sweden and to investigate the associations between vitamin D status and markers of glucose metabolism and metabolic risk markers. METHODS This was a prospective cross-sectional study of 202 obese children between 4.5 and 17.9 years of age who had been referred to the National Childhood Obesity Centre at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm. We examined age, gender, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), f-glucose, f-insulin and metabolic risk markers. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as less than 30 25(OH)D nmol/L. Children with and without a vitamin D deficiency were compared. RESULTS Just over a third (33.2%) of our study population had vitamin D levels <30 nmol/L 25(OH)D. A significant interaction effect was found between age and 25(OH)D. An association was also found between low 25(OH)D levels and impaired fasting glycaemia (IFG) independent of age and season. CONCLUSION Low vitamin D levels were common among obese adolescents living in Sweden and were strongly associated with age and associated with a higher risk of IFG.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors associated with vitamin D deficiency in children. METHODS We analyzed the medical records of 330 patients from the age of 6 to 12, who visited the endocrinology clinic of the Department of Pediatrics at Pusan National University Hospital, from September, 2013 to May, 2014. According to their serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels, the patients were grouped into either the deficiency group (25(OH)D<20 ng/mL), or the sufficiency group (25(OH)D≥20 ng/mL). The differences between the 2 groups were compared. RESULTS There were 195 patients (59.1%) who had vitamin D deficiency. Their mean serum 25(OH)D level was 14.86±3.20 ng/mL. The differences in sex, age, and pubertal status between the 2 groups were not statistically significant. Weight standard deviation score (SDS), and body mass index SDS, were significantly higher in the vitamin D deficiency group (P=0.002 for each), compared to the sufficiency group. Compared with Autumn, both Spring (odds ratio [OR], 9.7; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.3-22.0), and Winter (OR, 5.9; 95% CI, 3.5-10.0), were risk factors for vitamin D deficiency. In multiple logistic regression analysis, only seasonal differences have been confirmed to have an effect on vitamin D deficiency. CONCLUSION Vitamin D deficiency in children aged 6 to 12 years is very common. Spring and Winter are the most important risk factors for vitamin D deficiency. We suggest that it is necessary to supplement the guideline for the vitamin D intake according to our situation.

Abstract
The purpose was to determine the prevalence and related factors of vitamin D (VitD)
insufficiency in adolescents and young adults with perinatally acquired human
immunodeficiency virus. A cohort of 65 patients (17.6 ± 2 years) at the Federal
University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were examined for pubertal development,
nutrition, serum parathormone and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [s25(OH)D]. s25(OH)D
levels < 30 ng/mL (< 75 nmol/L) were defined as VitD insufficiency.
CD4+ T-cell counts and viral load, history of worst clinical status,
immunologic status as nadir, current immunologic status, and antiretroviral (ART)
regimen were also evaluated as risk factors for VitD insufficiency. Mean s25(OH)D was
37.7 ± 13.9 ng/mL and 29.2% had VitD insufficiency. There was no difference between
VitD status and gender, age, nutritional status, clinical and immunological
classification, and type of ART. Only VitD consumption showed tendency of association
with s25(OH)D (p = 0.064). Individuals analysed in summer/autumn season had a higher
s25(OH)D compared to the ones analysed in winter/spring (42.6 ± 14.9 vs. 34.0 ± 11.9,
p = 0.011). Although, the frequency of VitD insufficiency did not differ
statistically between the groups (summer/autumn 17.9% vs. winter/spring 37.8%, p =
0.102), we suggest to monitor s25(OH)D in seropositive adolescents and young adults,
especially during winter/spring months, even in sunny regions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Vitamin D deficiency is endemic in children with CKD. We sought to investigate the association of genetic disposition, environmental factors, vitamin D supplementation, and renal function on vitamin D status in children with CKD. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS Serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D, and 24,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D concentrations were measured cross-sectionally in 500 children from 12 European countries with CKD stages 3-5. All patients were participants of the Cardiovascular Comorbidity in Children with Chronic Kidney Disease Study, had CKD stage 3-5, and were age 6-18 years old. Patients were genotyped for single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the genes encoding 25-hydroxylase, vitamin D binding protein, 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase, and 24-hydroxylase. Associations of genetic status, season, local solar radiation, oral vitamin D supplementation, and disease-associated factors with vitamin D status were assessed. RESULTS Two thirds of patients were vitamin D deficient (25-hydroxy-vitamin D <16 ng/ml). 25-Hydroxy-vitamin D concentrations varied with season and were twofold higher in vitamin D-supplemented patients (21.6 [14.1] versus 10.4 [10.1] ng/ml; P<0.001). Glomerulopathy, albuminuria, and girls were associated with lower 25-hydroxy-vitamin D levels. 24,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D levels were closely correlated with 25-hydroxy-vitamin D and 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D (r=0.87 and r=0.55; both P<0.001). 24,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D concentrations were higher with higher c-terminal fibroblast growth factor 23 and inversely correlated with intact parathyroid hormone. Whereas 25-hydroxy-vitamin D levels were independent of renal function, 24,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D levels were lower with lower eGFR. Vitamin D deficiency was more prevalent in Turkey than in other European regions independent of supplementation status and disease-related factors. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the vitamin D binding protein gene were independently associated with lower 25-hydroxy-vitamin D and higher 24,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D. CONCLUSIONS Disease-related factors and vitamin D supplementation are the main correlates of vitamin D status in children with CKD. Variants in the vitamin D binding protein showed weak associations with the vitamin D status.

Abstract
There is currently insufficient information on serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations, and bone mineral status in healthy adolescents to allow reference values to be set. This study aimed to provide comparable data on vitamin D status in Japanese adolescents and to assess sex differences in susceptibility to vitamin D insufficiency. Serum 25OHD and PTH concentrations were measured in 1,380 healthy adolescents (aged 12-18 years). Subjects completed a questionnaire on exercise history, diet, and lifestyle factors. Calcaneal stiffness was evaluated by quantitative ultrasound. Serum 25OHD concentrations in boys and girls were 60.8 ± 18.3 and 52.8 ± 17.0 nmol/L, respectively. Approximately 30 % of boys and 47 % of girls had suboptimal 25OHD concentrations (<50 nmol/L). Serum PTH concentration was negatively correlated with serum 25OHD concentration in boys, but negatively correlated with calcium intake rather than serum 25OHD in girls. In contrast, the increment in calcaneal stiffness as a result of elevation of serum 25OHD was higher in girls than in boys. As vitamin D deficiency is common in Japanese adolescents, it was estimated that intakes of ≥12 and ≥14 μg/day vitamin D would be required to reach 25OHD concentrations of 50 nmol/L in boys and girls, respectively. Moreover, the results of the present study indicate that vitamin D deficiency has a greater association with calcaneal stiffness in girls than in boys.

Abstract
AIM The objective of this study was to describe the vitamin D status of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and to evaluate whether levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D are significantly associated with HbA1c in this population. METHODS 197 children and adolescents from a diabetes center in a children's hospital were recruited during regular follow up visit. Non-fasting blood samples were collected to measure 25-hydroxyvitamin D and blood glucose levels. HbA1c and other key variables were abstracted from patients' medical records. RESULTS Of the 197 children and adolescents, more than half were adolescents, males, and Caucasian. 23% were overweight, while 13% were obese. Mean HbA1c was 8.6±1.4% (70±15.3mmol/mol). 40.6% of patients had 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels ≤50nmol/L; 49.2% had 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels between 51 and 75nmol/L and 10.2% had 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels >75nmol/L. The bivariate relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and HbA1c almost reached statistical significance (P=0.057), while no significance was established in the multivariate model. CONCLUSIONS To the best of our knowledge this is the first study that has been adequately-powered to examine the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and HbA1c in children and adolescents with T1DM. This study demonstrated the high prevalence of patients with low levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D specifically in healthy weight and Caucasian children and adolescents with T1DM. These data suggest the need for monitoring of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in all youth with T1DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D inadequacy is widespread in children and adolescents worldwide. The present study was undertaken to assess the vitamin D status in active children living in a sunny climate and to identify the main determinants of the serum concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD). METHODS This cross-sectional study included 225 children aged 7-15 years practicing sports in a football academy. Anthropometric measures were performed to calculate body mass index (BMI), fat mass, and maturity status. A nutritional enquiry was performed including 3-day food records and food frequency questionnaire. Plasma 25-OHD and insulin were assessed by immunoenzymatic methods ensuring categorization of vitamin D status and calculation of insulin sensitivity/resistance indexes. A logistic regression model was applied to identify predictors for vitamin D inadequacy. RESULTS Vitamin D deficiency (25-OHD<12 µg/L) was observed in 40.9% of children and insufficiency (12<25-OHD<20 µg/L) was observed in 44% of children. In a multivariate analysis, vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency were associated with a lower dietary intake of vitamin D, proteins, milk, red meat, fish, and eggs. However, no significant relationship was observed with maturation status, adiposity, or insulin resistance. CONCLUSIONS Tunisian children and adolescents are exposed to a high risk of vitamin D inadequacy despite living in a sunny climate. Circulating 25-OHD concentrations are related to the intake of vitamin D food sources but not to maturation status or body composition. Ensuring sufficient and safe sun exposure and adequate vitamin D intake may prevent vitamin D inadequacy in children from sunny environments.

Abstract
Vitamin D is necessary for maintaining and regulating calcium levels; thus, insufficiency of vitamin D increases the risk of many chronic diseases. This study aimed to examine vitamin D levels among Jordanian and Iraqi volunteers and find the relation between vitamin D level and lipid profile patients. Vitamin D levels were evaluated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. For young healthy group subjects, vitamin D levels were 20.60 ± 5.94 ng/mL for Jordanian and 27.59 ± 7.74 ng/mL for Iraqi. Vitamin D concentrations for young males and females were 25.82 ± 8.33 ng/mL and 21.95 ± 6.39 ng/mL, respectively. Females wearing hijab were 20.87 ± 6.45 ng/mL, while uncovered females were 23.55 ± 6.04 ng/mL. For >40 years Iraqi subjects, vitamin D level for healthy was 29.78 ± 9.49 ng/mL and 23.88 ± 7.93 ng/mL for hyperlipidemic subjects. Vitamin D levels for overweight and obese healthy groups were significantly higher (P < 0.050) than those for the hyperlipidemic patients groups. Vitamin D levels for males were significantly higher than females and were significantly higher for healthy than those hyperlipidemic Iraqi patients. These findings showed that vitamin D levels are affected by age, nationality, gender, and health statues and highlight the importance of vitamin D supplementation for groups with low levels particularly old, hijab wearing females, and hyperlipidemic groups.
