Public engagement with science: an inclusive approach to innovate in health research with real-world data

BACKGROUND

Public engagement with science (PES) initiatives in health research that use big data to analyze social inequalities in health requires strategies and methods adapted to the contexts of countries in the Global South. This paper aims to examine how, in Brazil - a country with a strong tradition of social participation in research and public policymaking-two research projects from a center that utilizes administrative and real-world data incorporate inclusion and diversity as key elements to connect knowledge production with real-world challenges.

METHODS

The study analyzes how two Cidacs research projects - one related to Primary Health Care (PHC) and the other to Data Interoperability-involved members of the public throughout their implementation. Both projects jointly engaged 18 participants, including community representatives, health professionals, and public sector managers. A case report approach is being employed in this paper to systematically document PES experiences based on a predefined script, covering context, methodology, activities, audiences, and ethical aspects. Data were collected through participant observation and listening during engagement activities, which facilitated dialogue between participants and researchers, as well as through follow-up questionnaires and subsequent discussions. This paper itself emerged from this collaborative process, including with some PES participants as co-authors.

RESULTS

The participants' collaboration impacted the researchers' decisions, providing a closer understanding of the challenges faced by the participants in their daily work in relation to each of the research themes. Furthermore, these discussions resulted in the establishment of partnerships for new initiatives. The participants highlighted that, in addition to the opportunity to contribute to the development of scientific research, they acquired new knowledge from their contact with the research teams.

CONCLUSIONS

The diversity of social groups and the inclusion of different perspectives in research projects mobilized by PES have the potential to promote innovations in research processes and results, as well as have social impact. The potential for applicability of scientific information is expanded since it is more connected to the real world, and the participants themselves drive the dissemination process.

Association between congenital Zika syndrome and hospitalizations during early childhood: a nationwide cohort study

OBJECTIVES

Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) has been linked to a wide spectrum of abnormalities. However, differences in hospitalization patterns between children with and without CZS have not yet been investigated.

METHODS

We compared rates of hospital admissions for all and specific diseases, proportions of admission causes, and total length of hospital stay (LOS) between children with CZS and those without the syndrome. Adjusted incidence rate ratios (aIRR) and aLOS were estimated using negative binomial regression.

RESULTS

Compared to those without CZS, the aIRR for all-cause hospitalizations in the CZS group ranged from 3.77 (95%CI: 3.47-4.06) in the neonatal period to 7.76 (95%CI: 6.91-8.61) at ages 2-4 years. Similar trends were observed for specific causes of admissions. Most admissions in the CZS group related to congenital malformations, neurological, respiratory and infectious diseases. aLOS ranged from 16.0 days [95%CI: 13.2-19.5] to 19.9 days among CZS patients and 6.0 days [95%CI: 5.9-6.2] to 9.3 days [95%CI: 9.3-9.4] for patients without the syndrome.

CONCLUSION

Children born with CZS face significantly higher rates of hospitalization and longer stays compared to those without the syndrome during early childhood.

Syphilis Exposure During Pregnancy and Childhood Hospital Admissions in Brazil

Importance

While the short-term impacts of congenital syphilis are well documented, the long-term outcomes and effects on children exposed to syphilis during pregnancy but without congenital infection detected at birth remain unclear.

Objective

To compare the rates of all-cause hospitalization in children younger than 5 years between those exposed to syphilis during pregnancy (with and without congenital syphilis) and those unexposed to syphilis during pregnancy.

Design, Setting, and Participants

Population-based study using linked data from the Center of Data and Knowledge Integration for Health Birth Cohort, including singleton live births between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2015. Children were followed up until age 5 years, death, or December 31, 2018, whichever occurred first. Data were made available in 2020 and analyzed between March and September 2024.

Exposures

In this study, syphilis during pregnancy was categorized into 3 groups: (1) maternal syphilis, (2) congenital syphilis, and (3) no exposure, for those without syphilis records.

Main Outcomes and Measures

Primary outcomes were: (1) general and age-stratified first hospital admission rates, (2) length of stay for the first hospital admission, and (3) International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision diagnoses of the first hospitalization. Secondary outcomes included: (1) recurrent hospital admissions and (2) mortality.

Results

The study included 8 286 867 singleton births, with 30 039 exposed to maternal syphilis (15 482 [51.5%] male, 7642 [25.4%] Asian, 2442 [8.1%] Black, and 16 930 [56.4%] Pardo [denotes individuals who are White and Indigenous, White and Black, Black and Indigenous, or Black and another race]) and 36 443 with congenital syphilis (18 286 [50.2%] male, 6977 [19.1%] Asian, 3769 [10.3%] Black, 16 930 [56.4%] Pardo). Exposed births were more prevalent in Black, single, and less educated women. Compared with children with no exposure, those with congenital syphilis had an increased risk of first hospitalization (hazard ratio [HR], 6.19; 95% CI, 6.11-6.28), as did those exposed to maternal syphilis (HR, 1.90; 95% CI, 1.86-1.94). The highest risk of first hospitalization was observed in the first month of life, among those with congenital syphilis (HR, 11.53; 95% CI, 11.36-11.70). Although the risk decreased with age, children exposed to syphilis continued to have higher hospitalization rates than the nonexposed group until the age of 36 months. Live-born children exposed to syphilis during pregnancy also had more and longer hospital admissions. Those with congenital syphilis had a lower prevalence of respiratory and digestive diagnoses than those with maternal syphilis and the nonexposed group.

Conclusions and Relevance

In this cohort study, we observed that those children exposed to syphilis during pregnancy, even without congenital syphilis detected at birth, had a higher risk of hospital admission and were hospitalized for longer periods. These findings underscore the need for close monitoring of exposed children and emphasize the importance of preventing syphilis in women of childbearing age.

Perinatal health outcomes of offspring of internal migrant women according to human development index: a registry-based cohort study of over 10 million live births from Brazil

Background

Migration, driven by factors like poverty, violence, and natural disasters, is a key social determinant of health. While international migrants often have worse perinatal outcomes, research on perinatal health differences between internal migrants and non-migrants remains limited. We aimed to determine whether the offspring of women who migrate within Brazil experience poorer perinatal outcomes than those of non-migrants, according to the Human Development Index (HDI) of their municipalities of origin and destination.

Methods

We used the CIDACS Birth Cohort, consisting of women applying for social programmes in the Unified Registry for Social Programmes Cadastro Único linked with live births and mortality registries. We included live births conceived from March 2010 to February 2018. Internal migrants were women who changed their state of residence from registration in CadUnico to the birth of the child. We derived risk ratios (RR) of migration's effect according to HDI of residence before and after migration using logistic regression.

Findings

We included 10,184,021 births in the study, with 5.7% of these births from women who were internal migrants. The offspring of women who migrated to municipalities with equal/higher HDI (80% of migrations), exhibited a decreased risk of preterm births (RR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.93-0.95), low birth weight (RR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.92-0.95) and small for gestational age (RR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.91-0.93), but higher risk of congenital abnormalities (RR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.10-1.18). The offspring of women who migrated to municipalities with lower HDI had delayed access to healthcare and worse outcomes except for a lower risk of low birth weight (RR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.92-0.96).

Interpretation

Offspring of those migrating to municipalities with equal/higher HDI tend to have better perinatal outcomes, whereas migrants to lower HDIs have a similar pattern to non-migrant women.

A nationwide longitudinal investigation on the role of prenatal exposure to infectious diseases on the onset of chronic conditions in children and adolescents in Brazil

Background

In utero exposure to infections might set the stage for a chain of events leading to a wide spectrum of long-term health outcomes observed in children and adolescents. This proposal aims to investigate whether syphilis, zika, dengue and chikungunya during pregnancy can increase the risk of the offspring developing a non-infectious chronic condition during childhood and adolescence.

Objectives

1) Estimate the risk of non-infectious chronic conditions associated to syphilis, zika, dengue and chikungunya during pregnancy and when appropriate, explore if the risk varies by timing during pregnancy when the infection is acquired (first, second or third trimester) and severity (such as severe or mild dengue); 2) Investigate whether in uterus exposure to maternal infection affects the growth pattern of children and adolescents; 3) Examine the extent to which the relationship between maternal infection and non-infectious chronic outcomes are mediated by intrauterine growth restriction and preterm birth.

Methods

We will compare health outcomes and growth trajectories of children and adolescents born to mothers with and without specific infections during pregnancy using conventional multivariable regression in the whole study population, in a within sibship design, using the subgroup of offspring with at least one sibling who is not exposed to the infection, and negative control outcome. Then we will decompose the direct and mediated effects (by preterm birth and small for gestational age) of maternal infection on chronic disorders.

Results and Conclusions

The results from this study will advance our understanding of the relationship between infections during pregnancy and chronic disorders, with widespread implications enabling targeting of critical points along the path from in utero exposure to outcomes to avoid or mitigate illness and disability over the life course.

Recent changes in growth trajectories: a population-based cohort study of over 5 million Brazilian children born between 2001 and 2014

Background

There is limited evidence on recent trends in childhood growth trajectories in Low-/middle-income countries. We investigated how age-trajectories for height and Body Mass Index (BMI) have changed among Brazilian children born in two different time periods after 2000.

Methods

We used a population-based cohort (part of the "Cohort of 100-Million Brazilians") created by the linkage of three Brazilian administrative databases: the Cadastro Único of the Federal Government, the National System of Live Births and the National Nutritional and Food Surveillance System. We included longitudinal data on 5,750,214 children who were 3 to <10 years of age and born between 2001 and 2014 (20,209,133 observations). We applied fractional polynomial models with random-effects to estimate mean height and BMI trajectories for children.

Findings

Compared to children born in 2001-2007, the cohort born in 2008-2014 were on average taller, by a z-score of 0.15 in boys and 0.12 in girls. Their height trajectories shifted upwards, by approximately 1 cm in both sexes. Levels of BMI increased little, by a z-score of 0.06 (boys) and 0.04 (girls). Mean BMI trajectories also changed little. However, the prevalence of overweight/obesity increased between cohorts, e.g., from 26.8% to 30% in boys and 23.9%-26.6% in girls aged between 5 and <10 years.

Interpretation

An increase of 1 cm in mean height of Brazilian children during a short period indicates the improvement in maternal and child health, especially those from low-income families due to the new health and welfare policies in Brazil. Although mean BMI changed little, the prevalence of child overweight/obesity slightly increased and remained high.

Ethnoracial disparities in childhood growth trajectories in Brazil: a longitudinal nationwide study of four million children

BACKGROUND

The literature contains scarce data on inequalities in growth trajectories among children born to mothers of diverse ethnoracial background in the first 5 years of life.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to investigate child growth according to maternal ethnoracial group using a nationwide Brazilian database.

METHODS

A population-based retrospective cohort study employed linked data from the CIDACS Birth Cohort and the Brazilian Food and Nutrition Surveillance System (SISVAN). Children born at term, aged 5 years or younger who presented two or more measurements of length/height (cm) and weight (kg) were followed up between 2008 and 2017. Prevalence of stunting, underweight, wasting, and thinness were estimated. Nonlinear mixed effect models were used to estimate childhood growth trajectories, among different maternal ethnoracial groups (White, Asian descent, Black, Pardo, and Indigenous), using the raw measures of weight (kg) and height (cm) and the length/height-for-age (L/HAZ) and weight-for-age z-scores (WAZ). The analyses were also adjusted for mother's age, educational level, and marital status.

RESULTS

A total of 4,090,271 children were included in the study. Children of Indigenous mothers exhibited higher rates of stunting (26.74%) and underweight (5.90%). Wasting and thinness were more prevalent among children of Pardo, Asian, Black, and Indigenous mothers than those of White mothers. Regarding children's weight (kg) and length/height (cm), those of Indigenous, Pardo, Black, and Asian descent mothers were on average shorter and weighted less than White ones. Regarding WAZ and L/HAZ growth trajectories, a sharp decline in average z-scores was evidenced in the first weeks of life, followed by a period of recovery. Over time, z-scores for most of the subgroups analyzed trended below zero. Children of mother in greater social vulnerability showed less favorable growth.

CONCLUSION

We observed racial disparities in nutritional status and childhood growth trajectories, with children of Indigenous mothers presenting less favorable outcomes compared to their White counterparts. The strengthening of policies aimed at protecting Indigenous children should be urgently undertaken to address systematic ethnoracial health inequalities.

Association of interpregnancy interval with adverse pregnancy outcomes according to the outcomes of the preceding pregnancy: a longitudinal study with 4.7 million live births from Brazil

Background

Earlier studies have proposed a link between the Interpregnancy Interval (IPI) and unfavorable birth outcomes. However, it remains unclear if the outcomes of previous births could affect this relationship. We aimed to investigate whether the occurrence of adverse outcomes-small for gestational age (SGA), preterm birth (PTB), and low birth weight (LBW)-at the immediately preceding pregnancy could alter the association between IPI and the same outcomes at the subsequent pregnancy.

Methods

We used a population-based linked cohort from Brazil (2001-2015). IPI was measured as the difference, in months, between the preceding birth and subsequent conception. Outcomes included SGA (<10th birthweight percentile for gestational age and sex), LBW (<2500 g), and PTB (gestational age <37 weeks). We calculated risk ratios (RRs), using the IPI of 18-22 months as the reference IPI category, we also stratified by the number of adverse birth outcomes at the preceding pregnancy.

Findings

Among 4,788,279 births from 3,804,152 mothers, absolute risks for subsequent SGA, PTB, and LBW were higher for women with more adverse outcomes in the preceding delivery. The RR of SGA and LBW for IPIs <6 months were greater for women without previous adverse outcomes (SGA: 1.44 [95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.41-1.46]; LBW: 1.49 [1.45-1.52]) compared to those with three previous adverse outcomes (SGA: 1.20 [1.10-1.29]; LBW: 1.24 [1.15-1.33]). IPIs ≥120 months were associated with greater increases in risk for LBW and PTB among women without previous birth outcomes (LBW: 1.59; [1.53-1.65]; PTB: 2.45 [2.39-2.52]) compared to women with three adverse outcomes at the index birth (LBW: 0.92 [0.78-1.06]; PTB: 1.66 [1.44-1.88]).

Interpretation

Our study suggests that women with prior adverse outcomes may have higher risks for adverse birth outcomes in subsequent pregnancies. However, risk changes due to differences in IPI length seem to have a lesser impact compared to women without a prior event. Considering maternal obstetric history is essential in birth spacing counseling.

Perinatal health outcomes of international migrant women in Brazil: A nationwide data linkage study of the CIDACS birth cohort (2011-2018)

BACKGROUND

We investigated perinatal outcomes among live births from international migrant and local-born mothers in a cohort of low-income individuals in Brazil.

METHODS

We linked nationwide birth registries to mortality records and socioeconomic data from the CIDACS Birth Cohort and studied singleton live births of women aged 10-49 years from 1st January 2011 to 31st December 2018. We used logistic regressions to investigate differences in antenatal care, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and neonatal (i.e., ≤28 days) mortality among international migrants compared to non-migrants in Brazil; and explored the interaction between migration, race/ethnicity and living in international border municipalities.

RESULTS

We studied 10,279,011 live births, of which 9469 (0.1 %) were born to international migrants. Migrant women were more likely than their Brazilian-born counterparts to have a previous foetal loss (ORadj: 1.16, 1.11-1.22), a delayed start of antenatal care (i.e., beyond 1st trimester) (1.22, 95%CI:1.16-1.28), a newborn who is large for gestational age (1.29, 1.22-1.36), or a newborn with congenital anomalies (1.37, 1.14-1.65). Conversely, migrant women were less likely to deliver prematurely (0.89, 0.82-0.95) or have a low birth weight infant (0.74, 0.68-0.81). There were no differences in neonatal mortality rates between migrants and non-migrants. Our analyses also showed that, when disparities in perinatal outcomes were present, disparities were mostly concentrated among indigenous mothers in international borders and among live births of Black mothers in non-borders.

CONCLUSION

Although live births of international migrants generally have lower rates of adverse birth outcomes, our results suggest that indigenous and Black migrant mothers may face disproportionate barriers to accessing antenatal care.

Participation in Conditional Cash Transfer Program During Pregnancy and Birth Weight-Related Outcomes

Importance

There is limited evidence of the association of conditional cash transfers, an important strategy to reduce poverty, with prevention of adverse birth-related outcomes.

Objective

To investigate the association between receiving benefits from the Bolsa Família Program (BFP) and birth weight indicators.

Design, Setting, and Participants

This cohort study used a linked data resource, the Centro de Integracao de Dados e Conhecimentos Para Saude (CIDACS) birth cohort. All live-born singleton infants born to mothers registered in the cohort between January 2012 and December 2015 were included. Each analysis was conducted for the overall population and separately by level of education, self-reported maternal race, and number of prenatal appointments. Data were analyzed from January 3 to April 24, 2023.

Exposure

Live births of mothers who had received BFP until delivery (for a minimum of 9 months) were classified as exposed and compared with live births from mothers who did not receive the benefit prior to delivery.

Main Outcomes and Measures

Low birth weight (LBW), birth weight in grams, and small for gestational age (SGA) were evaluated. Analytical methods used included propensity score estimation, kernel matching, and weighted logistic and linear regressions. Race categories included Parda, which translates from Portuguese as "brown" and is used to denote individuals whose racial background is predominantly Black and those with multiracial or multiethnic ancestry, including European, African, and Indigenous origins.

Results

A total of 4 277 523 live births (2 085 737 females [48.8%]; 15 207 among Asian [0.4%], 334 225 among Black [7.8%], 29 115 among Indigenous [0.7%], 2 588 363 among Parda [60.5%], and 1 310 613 among White [30.6%] mothers) were assessed. BFP was associated with an increase of 17.76 g (95% CI, 16.52-19.01 g) in birth weight. Beneficiaries had an 11% lower chance of LBW (odds ratio [OR], 0.89; 95% CI, 0.88-0.90). BFP was associated with a greater decrease in odds of LBW among subgroups of mothers who attended fewer than 7 appointments (OR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.84-0.87), were Indigenous (OR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.61-0.88), and had 3 or less years of education (OR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.72-0.81). There was no association between BFP and SGA, except among less educated mothers, who had a reduced risk of SGA (OR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.79-0.88).

Conclusions and Relevance

This study found that BFP was associated with increased birth weight and reduced odds of LBW, with a greater decrease in odds of LBW among higher-risk groups. These findings suggest the importance of maintaining financial support for mothers at increased risk of birth weight-related outcomes.

Maternal and child nutrition programme of investigation within the 100 Million Brazilian Cohort: study protocol

INTRODUCTION

There is a limited understanding of the early nutrition and pregnancy determinants of short-term and long-term maternal and child health in ethnically diverse and socioeconomically vulnerable populations within low-income and middle-income countries. This investigation programme aims to: (1) describe maternal weight trajectories throughout the life course; (2) describe child weight, height and body mass index (BMI) trajectories; (3) create and validate models to predict childhood obesity at 5 years of age; (4) estimate the effects of prepregnancy BMI, gestational weight gain (GWG) and maternal weight trajectories on adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes and child growth trajectories; (5) estimate the effects of prepregnancy BMI, GWG, maternal weight and interpregnancy BMI changes on maternal and child outcomes in the subsequent pregnancy; and (6) estimate the effects of maternal food consumption and infant feeding practices on child nutritional status and growth trajectories.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

Linked data from four different Brazilian databases will be used: the 100 Million Brazilian Cohort, the Live Births Information System, the Mortality Information System and the Food and Nutrition Surveillance System. To analyse trajectories, latent-growth, superimposition by translation and rotation and broken stick models will be used. To create prediction models for childhood obesity, machine learning techniques will be applied. For the association between the selected exposure and outcomes variables, generalised linear models will be considered. Directed acyclic graphs will be constructed to identify potential confounders for each analysis investigating potential causal relationships.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

This protocol was approved by the Research Ethics Committees of the authors' institutions. The linkage will be carried out in a secure environment. After the linkage, the data will be de-identified, and pre-authorised researchers will access the data set via a virtual private network connection. Results will be reported in open-access journals and disseminated to policymakers and the broader public.

Biases arising from linked administrative data for epidemiological research: a conceptual framework from registration to analyses

Linked administrative data offer a rich source of information that can be harnessed to describe patterns of disease, understand their causes and evaluate interventions. However, administrative data are primarily collected for operational reasons such as recording vital events for legal purposes, and planning, provision and monitoring of services. The processes involved in generating and linking administrative datasets may generate sources of bias that are often not adequately considered by researchers. We provide a framework describing these biases, drawing on our experiences of using the 100 Million Brazilian Cohort (100MCohort) which contains records of more than 131 million people whose families applied for social assistance between 2001 and 2018. Datasets for epidemiological research were derived by linking the 100MCohort to health-related databases such as the Mortality Information System and the Hospital Information System. Using the framework, we demonstrate how selection and misclassification biases may be introduced in three different stages: registering and recording of people's life events and use of services, linkage across administrative databases, and cleaning and coding of variables from derived datasets. Finally, we suggest eight recommendations which may reduce biases when analysing data from administrative sources.

Recurrence of preterm births: A population-based linkage with 3.5 million live births from the CIDACS Birth Cohort

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the recurrence of preterm birth (PTB) among the poorest half of the Brazilian population.

METHODS

A population-based retrospective study was conducted in Brazil with the live births of multiparous women extracted from the CIDACS Birth Cohort between 2001 and 2015. We used multivariate logistic regression to estimate the odds of recurrent PTB in second and third births.

RESULTS

A total of 3 528 050 live births from 1 764 025 multiparous women were analyzed. The adjusted odds for the occurrence of a PTB given a previous PTB was 2.58 (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.53-2.62). Lower gestational age increased the odds of a subsequent PTB (<28 weeks: adjusted OR [aOR] 3.61, 95% CI 3.41-3.83; 28-31 weeks: aOR 3.34, 95% CI 3.19-3.49; and 32-36 weeks: aOR 2.42, 95% CI 2.38-2.47). Women who had two previous PTBs were at high risk of having a third (aOR 4.98, 95% CI 4.70-5.27). Recurrence of PTB was more likely when the inter-birth interval was less than 12 months.

CONCLUSION

In Brazil, a middle-income country, women with a previous PTB had an increased risk of a subsequent one. This association was affected by gestational age, the number of PTBs, severity of previous PTBs, and a short interval between births.

Epidemic preparedness: Prenatal Zika virus screening during the next epidemic

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a vectorborne infectious agent of global public health significance due to its potential to cause severe teratogenic outcomes. The question of whether health systems should consider adopting screening programmes for ZIKV infections during pregnancy warrants consideration. In this analysis, we apply the Wilson-Jungner framework to appraise the potential utility of a prenatal ZIKV screening programme, outline potential screening strategies within the case-finding pathway, and consider other epidemiological factors that may influence the planning of such a screening programme. Our evaluation of a potential prenatal ZIKV screening programme highlights factors affirming its usefulness, including the importance of Congenital Zika Syndrome as a public health problem and the existence of analogous congenital prenatal screening programmes for STORCH agents (syphilis, toxoplasmosis, others (eg, human immunodeficiency virus, varicella-zoster virus, parvovirus B19), rubella, cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex virus). However, our assessment also reveals key barriers to implementation, such as the need for more accurate diagnostic tests, effective antiviral treatments, increased social service capacity, and surveillance. Given that the reemergence of ZIKV is likely, we provide a guiding framework for policymakers and public health leaders that can be further elaborated and adapted to different contexts in order to reduce the burden of adverse ZIKV-related birth outcomes during future outbreaks.

Being born and growing up in the Ribeirão Preto and São Luís cohorts

This thematic issue consists of 14 articles derived from studies of the BRISA birth cohort (Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo and São Luís, State of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil, a socially and economically less developed region). In these more than 40 years of existence, these cohorts have been able to document the increase in women's education, the improvement of health conditions, the creation of a public Unified Health System (SUS) that provides universal and free access to health care, eradication of hunger, and transition of the nutritional status characterized by a decrease in malnutrition rates and an increase in obesity in Brazil. Particularly in reproductive health, the country experienced a significant drop in fertility, a decrease in maternal and child mortality, and an increase in breastfeeding rates. Universal access to prenatal care and hospital delivery was accompanied by an excessive number of cesareans without clinical indication and early-term births and premature births, largely due to scheduled cesareans. Articles with a longitudinal and transversal methodological approach are presented, using structural equation analysis and propensity score, together with multivariate regressions, which gave a robust analytical treatment to articles in this thematic issue.
