Abstract
The field of nanotechnology has the mysterious capacity to reform every subject it touches. Nanotechnology advancements have already altered a variety of scientific and industrial fields. Nanoparticles (NPs) with sizes ranging from 1 to 100 nm (nm) are of great scientific and commercial interest. Their functions and characteristics differ significantly from those of bulk metal. Commercial quantities of NPs are synthesized using chemical or physical methods. The use of the physical and chemical approaches remained popular for many years; however, the recognition of their hazardous effects on human well-being and conditions influenced serious world perspectives for the researchers. There is a growing need in this field for simple, non-toxic, clean, and environmentally safe nanoparticle production methods to reduce environmental impact and waste and increase energy productivity. Microbial nanotechnology is relatively a new field. Using various microorganisms, a wide range of nanoparticles with well-defined chemical composition, morphology, and size have been synthesized, and their applications in a wide range of cutting-edge technological areas have been investigated. Green synthesis of the nanoparticles is cost-efficient and requires low maintenance. The present review highlights the synthesis of the nanoparticles by different microbes, their characterization, and their biotechnological potential. It further deals with the applications in biomedical, food, and textile industries as well as its role in biosensing, waste recycling, and biofuel production.

Abstract
Nanoparticles (NPs) serve immense roles in various fields of science. They have vastly upgraded conventional methods in the fields of agriculture and food sciences to eliminate growing threats of crop damage and disease, caused by various phytopathogens including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and some insects. Bacterial diseases resulted in mass damage of crops by adopting antibacterial resistance, which has proved to be a major threat leading to food scarcity. Therefore, numerous NPs with antibacterial potentials have been formulated to overcome the problem of antibiotic resistance alongside an increase in crop yield and boosting plant immunity. NPs synthesized through green synthesis techniques have proved to be more effective and environment-friendly than those synthesized via chemical methods. NPs exhibit great roles in plants ranging from enhanced crop yield to disease suppression, to targeted drug and pesticide deliveries inside the plants and acting as biosensors for pathogen detection. NPs serves major roles in disruption of cellular membranes, ROS production, altering of DNA and protein entities and changing energy transductions. This review focuses on the antibacterial effect of NPs on several plant bacterial pathogens, mostly, against Pseudomonas syringe, Ralstonia solanacearum, Xanthomonas axonopodis, Clavibacter michiganensisand Pantoea ananatis both in vivo and ex vivo, thereby minimizing their antibacterial resistance and enhancing the plants acquired immunity. Therefore, NPs present a safer and more reliable bactericidal activity against various disease-causing bacteria in plants.

Abstract
Insects feed on plants and cause the growth of plants to be restricted. Moreover, the application of traditional pesticides causes harmful effects on non-target organisms and poses serious threats to the environment. The use of conventional pesticides has negative impacts on creatures that are not the intended targets. It also presents significant risks to the surrounding ecosystem. Insects that are exposed to these chemicals eventually develop resistance to them. This review could benefit researcher for future development of nanopesticides research. This is because a holistic approach has been taken to describe the multidimensional properties of nanopesticides, health and environmental concerns and its possible harmful effects on non-target organisms and physiochemical entities. The assessment of effects of the nanopesticides is also being discussed through the drosophotoxicology. The future outlooks have been suggested to take a critical analysis before commercialization or formulation of the nanopesticides.

Abstract
In the era of dire environmental fluctuations, plants undergo several stressors during their life span, which severely impact their development and overall growth in negative aspects. Abiotic stress factors, especially moisture stress i.e shortage (drought) or excess (flooding), salinity, temperature divergence (i.e. heat and cold stress), heavy metal toxicity, etc. create osmotic and ionic imbalance inside the plant cells, which ultimately lead to devastating crop yield, sometimes crop failure. Apart from the array of abiotic stresses, various biotic stress caused by pathogens, insects, and nematodes also affect production. Therefore, to combat these major challenges in order to increase production, several novel strategies have been adapted, among which the use of nanoparticles (NPs) i.e. nanotechnology is becoming an emerging tool in various facets of the current agriculture system, nowadays. This present review will elaborately depict the deployment and mechanisms of different NPs to withstand these biotic and abiotic stresses, along with a brief overview and indication of the future research works to be oriented based on the steps provided for future research in advance NPs application through the sustainable way.

Abstract
The citrus canker pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis has caused severe damage to citrus crops worldwide, resulting in significant economic losses for the citrus industry. To address this, a green synthesis method was used to develop silver nanoparticles with the leaf extract of Phyllanthus niruri (GS-AgNP-LEPN). This method replaces the need for toxic reagents, as the LEPN acts as a reducing and capping agent. To further enhance their effectiveness, the GS-AgNP-LEPN were encapsulated in extracellular vesicles (EVs), nanovesicles with a diameter of approximately 30-1000 nm naturally released from different sources, including plant and mammalian cells, and found in the apoplastic fluid (APF) of leaves. When compared to a regular antibiotic (ampicillin), the delivery of APF-EV-GS-AgNP-LEPN and GS-AgNP-LEPN to X. axonopodis pv. was shown to have more significant antimicrobial activity. Our analysis showed the presence of phyllanthin and nirurinetin in the LEPN and found evidence that both could be responsible for antimicrobial activity against X. axonopodis pv. Ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase (FAD-FNR) and the effector protein XopAI play a crucial role in the survival and virulence of X. axonopodis pv. Our molecular docking studies showed that nirurinetin could bind to FAD-FNR and XopAI with high binding energies (-10.32 kcal/mol and -6.13 kcal/mol, respectively) as compared to phyllanthin (-6.42 kcal/mol and -2.93 kcal/mol, respectively), which was also supported by the western blot experiment. We conclude that (a) the hybrid of APF-EV and GS-NP could be an effective treatment for citrus canker, and (b) it works via the nirurinetin-dependent inhibition of FAD-FNR and XopAI in X. axonopodis pv.

Abstract
The xylem-limited pathogen Xylella fastidiosa causes severe economic losses worldwide, and no effective antimicrobial disease management options are available. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a novel ZnO-based nanoparticle formulation, Zinkicide TMN110 (ZnK), against X. fastidiosa in vitro and in planta. In vitro, minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of ZnK analyzed in Pierce's Disease 2 medium was estimated at approximately 60 ppm. Time-kill kinetics assay showed a 100% reduction of culturable X. fastidiosa in less than 1 h after ZnK treatment. Microfluidic chambers assays showed that ZnK also inhibits X. fastidiosa cell aggregation and growth under flow conditions. Phytotoxicity assessments in the greenhouse demonstrated that ZnK can be applied as a soil drench in 50 ml at 500 ppm/plant/week up to four times to tobacco and blueberry without causing visible damage. ZnK was also evaluated for disease control in the greenhouse using tobacco infected with X. fastidiosa subsp. fastidiosa strain TemeculaL. ZnK soil drench weekly applications at concentrations of 500 followed by 1,000 ppm (500/1,000) and 500/500/1,000 ppm (in 50 ml each), reduced X. fastidiosa populations by >2 to 3 log10 units and disease severity by approximately 57 and 76%, respectively, compared with the untreated control. Similarly, when blueberry plants infected with X. fastidiosa subsp. multiplex strain AlmaEm3 were soil drenched with ZnK at concentrations 1,000/1,000 ppm and 1,000/1,000/500 ppm (in 200 ml each), the bacterial population was reduced by approximately 1 to 2 log10 units, and disease severity decreased by approximately 39 and 43%, respectively. Overall, this study shows antibacterial activity of ZnK against X. fastidiosa and its effectiveness in plants to reduce disease symptoms under controlled conditions.

Abstract
The development of effective and ecofriendly agrochemicals, including bactericides, fungicides, insecticides, and nematicides, to control pests and prevent plant diseases remains a key challenge. Nanotechnology has provided opportunities for the use of nanomaterials as components in the development of anti-phytopathogenic agents. Indeed, inorganic-based nanoparticles (INPs) are among the promising ones. They may play an effective role in targeting and killing microbes via diverse mechanisms, such as deposition on the microbe surface, destabilization of cell walls and membranes by released metal ions, and the induction of a toxic mechanism mediated by the production of reactive oxygen species. Considering the lack of new agrochemicals with novel mechanisms of action, it is of particular interest to determine and precisely depict which types of INPs are able to induce antimicrobial activity with no phytotoxicity effects, and which microbe species are affected. Therefore, this review aims to provide an update on the latest advances in research focusing on the study of several types of engineered INPs, that are well characterized (size, shape, composition, and surface features) and show promising reactivity against assorted species (bacteria, fungus, virus). Since effective strategies for plant protection and plant disease management are urgently needed, INPs can be an excellent alternative to chemical agrochemical agents as indicated by the present studies.

Abstract
Rapid advancement in nanotechnology has led to the development of a myriad of useful nanomaterials that have novel characteristics resulting from their small size and engineered properties. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) materials have become a major focus in material science and chemistry research worldwide with substantial efforts centered on their synthesis, property characterization, and technological, and environmental applications. Environmental applications of these nanomaterials include but are not limited to adsorbents for wastewater and drinking water treatment, membranes for desalination, and coating materials for filtration. However, it is also important to address the environmental interactions and implications of these nanomaterials in order to develop strategies that minimize their environmental and public health risks. Towards this end, this review covers the most recent literature on the environmental implementations of emerging 2D nanomaterials, thereby providing insights into the future of this fast-evolving field including strategies for ensuring sustainable development of 2D nanomaterials.

Abstract
Titanium is a ubiquitous element with a wide variety of beneficial effects in plants, including enhanced nutrient uptake and resistance to pathogens and abiotic stresses. While there is numerous evidence supporting the beneficial effects that Ti fertilization give to plants, there is little information on which genetic signaling pathways the Ti application activate in plant tissues. In this study, we utilize RNA-seq and ionomics technologies to unravel the molecular signals that Arabidopsis plants unleash when treated with Ti. RNA-seq analysis showed that Ti activates abscisic acid and salicylic acid signaling pathways and the expression of NUCLEOTIDE BINDING SITE-LEUCINE RICH REPEAT receptors likely by acting as a chemical priming molecule. This activation results in enhanced resistance to drought, high salinity, and infection with Botrytis cinerea in Arabidopsis. Ti also grants an enhanced nutritional state, even at suboptimal phosphate concentrations by upregulating the expression of multiple nutrient and membrane transporters and by modifying or increasing the production root exudates. Our results suggest that Ti might act similarly to the beneficial element Silicon in other plant species.

Abstract
Increased crop production is necessary to keep up with rising food demand. However, conventional agricultural practices and agrochemicals are unable to sustain further increases without serious risk of adverse environmental consequences. The implementation of nanotechnology in agriculture practices has been increasing in recent years and has shown tremendous potential to boost crop production. The rapid growth in development and use of nano-agrochemicals in agriculture will inevitably result in more chemicals reaching water bodies. Some unique properties of nanoformulations may also alter the toxicity of the AI on aquatic organisms when compared to their conventional counterparts. Results from studies on conventional formulations may not properly represent the toxicity of new nanoformulations in the aquatic environment. As a result, current guidelines derived from conventional formulations may not be suitable to regulate those newly developed nanoformulations. Current knowledge on the toxicity of nano-agrochemicals on aquatic organisms is limited, especially in an ecologically relevant setting. This review complies and analyzes 18 primary studies based on 7 criteria to provide a comprehensive analysis of the available toxicity information of nano-agrochemicals and their conventional counterparts on aquatic organisms. Our analysis demonstrates that the overall toxicity of nano-agrochemicals on non-target aquatic species is significantly lower as compared to conventional counterparts. However, further dividing formulations into three categories (organic, bulk and ionic) shows that some nanoformulations can be more toxic when compared to bulk materials but less toxic as compared to ionic formulations while organic nanopesticides do not show a general trend in overall toxicity. Moreover, our analysis reveals the limitations of current studies and provides recommendations for future toxicity studies to ensure the effective and sustainable application of nano-agrochemicals, which will be beneficial to both the agrochemical industry and regulatory agencies alike.

Abstract
The ever-increasing demand for agricultural food products, medicine, and other commercial sectors requires new technologies for agricultural practices and promoting the optimum utilization of natural resources. The application of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) enhance the biomass production and yield of food crop while resisting harmful environmental stresses. Bio-mediated synthesis of ENMs are time-efficient, low-cost, environmentally friendly, green technology. The precedence of using a bio-mediated route over conventional precursors for ENM synthesis is non-toxic and readily available. It possesses many active agents that can facilitate the reduction and stabilization processes during nanoparticle formation. This review presents recent developments in bio-mediated ENMs and green synthesis techniques using plants, algae, fungi, and bacteria, including significant contributions to identifying major ENM applications in agriculture with potential impacts on sustainability, such as the role of different ENMs in agriculture and their impact on different plant species. The review also covers the advantages and disadvantages of different ENMs and potential future research in this field.

Abstract
New insights into the interactions between nanopesticides and edible plants are required in order to elucidate their impacts on human health and agriculture. Nanopesticides include formulations consisting of organic/inorganic nanoparticles. Drosophila melanogaster has become a powerful model in genetic research thanks to its genetic similarity to mammals. This project mainly aimed to generate new evidence for the toxic/genotoxic properties of different nanopesticides (a nanoemulsion (permethrin nanopesticides, 20 ± 5 nm), an inorganic nanoparticle as an active ingredient (copper(II) hydroxide [Cu(OH)2] nanopesticides, 15 ± 6 nm), a polymer-based nanopesticide (acephate nanopesticides, 55 ± 25 nm), and an inorganic nanoparticle associated with an organic active ingredient (validamycin nanopesticides, 1177 ± 220 nm)) and their microparticulate forms (i.e., permethrin, copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O), acephate, and validamycin) widely used against agricultural pests, while also showing the merits of using Drosophila—a non-target in vivo eukaryotic model organism—in nanogenotoxicology studies. Significant biological effects were noted at the highest doses of permethrin (0.06 and 0.1 mM), permethrin nanopesticides (1 and 2.5 mM), CuSO4·5H2O (1 and 5 mM), acephate and acephate nanopesticides (1 and 5 mM, respectively), and validamycin and validamycin nanopesticides (1 and 2.5 mM, respectively). The results demonstrating the toxic/genotoxic potential of these nanopesticides through their impact on cellular internalization and gene expression represent significant contributions to future nanogenotoxicology studies.

Abstract
Water hyssop (Bacopa monnieri L. Pennel) is a medicinal aquatic herb used to treat diseases in South Asia. Various regeneration protocols have been developed or modified in vitro to ensure the availability of biomass and secondary metabolites of Bacopa. We applied hydrothermally treated titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) (TiO2-NPs) at different concentrations. Three explants, distal portion of half leaf (DPHL), proximal portion of half leaf (PPHL) and full leaf (FL), were used to evaluate response to TiO2. Regeneration from the three explants in vitro was similar except for shoot length. Application of TiO2-NPs exerted significant, but variable, effects on all parameters except percentage of shoot formation, which was 100%. Interactive effects of explant and TiO2-NPs exhibited significant, but variable, effects on fresh weight and percentage of callus formation. All explants produced more shoots using TiO2-NPs compared to control treatments. DPHL explants with application of 8 mg/l TiO2 produced more shoots than controls. Similarly, FL explant treated with 2 mg/l TiO2-NPs produced more shoots/explant than controls. All concentrations of TiO2-NPs produced significantly longer shoots compared to controls. Increased elongation of shoots justifies use of TiO2-NPs for propagation of plants in vitro during acclimatization. Use of TiO2-NPs for rapid elongation of shoots ultimately fosters survival of plants.

Abstract
Copper bactericides are routinely used to control Xanthomonas perforans (XP), causal agent of bacterial spot of tomato. Given the widespread tolerance to copper in XP strains in FL, USA, nanotechnology-based elemental composites have gained interest for their potential applications in agriculture in part due to their enhanced antimicrobial properties and toxicity to copper-tolerant strains. However, little is known about the potential impact of conventional copper bactericides as well as nano-based elemental composites on soil microbial communities, as determined by high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rDNA. We compared the effects of 2 and 200 μg/mL of core-shell (CS), a metallic copper composite, and a conventional copper bactericide + mancozeb (Cu+Man) on the soil microbiome. These treatments were compared to three controls, the microbial profile of the soil prior to application of copper products, a water application, and spiking the soil with a soilborne phytobacterium, Ralstonia solanacearum (RS). The RS treatment was included to determine if downstream analysis could detect the artificial inoculation. Utilizing multiple β diversity measurements, each emphasizing various tenets of ecology, provided a greater perspective of the effects the treatments had on the microbiome. Analysis of HTS data revealed that the two treatments containing field applied rates of metallic copper, CS 200 and Cu+Man, had the largest impact on the soil microbiome at seven-days posttreatment compared to water. However, we simulated field applied rates of CS 200 entering the soil by treating soil with CS 2 and determined this concentration had a negligible effect on the soil microbiome. IMPORTANCE Nanotechnology-based elemental composites have gained popularity for their potential applications in plant disease management due to their enhanced antimicrobial properties. However, little is known about their potential impact on the environment. Foliar applications of nano metallic composites upon leaching into the soil have the potential to impact soil microbial populations that in turn influence soil health. Utilizing multiple β diversity measurements, high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that field applied rates of metallic copper (200 μg/mL) from an advanced copper composite (core-shell [CS]) and a conventional copper bactericide in combination with mancozeb had the largest impact on the soil microbiome compared to water and nontreated control. To simulate leaching from the leaf surface, a lower concentration (2 μg/mL) of CS was also applied to the soil and had a negligible effect on the soil microbiome. Thus, field applied rates of CS may have a minimal effect on soil microbial communities.

Abstract
Interest in nanomaterials and especially nanoparticles has exploded in the past decades primarily due to their novel or enhanced physical and chemical properties compared to bulk material. These extraordinary properties have created a multitude of innovative applications in the fields of medicine and pharma, electronics, agriculture, chemical catalysis, food industry, and many others. More recently, nanoparticles are also being synthesized ‘biologically’ through the use of plant- or microorganism-mediated processes, as an environmentally friendly alternative to the expensive, energy-intensive, and potentially toxic physical and chemical synthesis methods. This transdisciplinary approach to nanoparticle synthesis requires that biologists and biotechnologists understand and learn to use the complex methodology needed to properly characterize these processes. This review targets a bio-oriented audience and summarizes the physico–chemical properties of nanoparticles, and methods used for their characterization. It highlights why nanomaterials are different compared to micro- or bulk materials. We try to provide a comprehensive overview of the different classes of nanoparticles and their novel or enhanced physicochemical properties including mechanical, thermal, magnetic, electronic, optical, and catalytic properties. A comprehensive list of the common methods and techniques used for the characterization and analysis of these properties is presented together with a large list of examples for biogenic nanoparticles that have been previously synthesized and characterized, including their application in the fields of medicine, electronics, agriculture, and food production. We hope that this makes the many different methods more accessible to the readers, and to help with identifying the proper methodology for any given nanoscience problem.

Abstract
Pesticide nanoencapsulation and its foliar application are promising approaches for improving the efficiency of current pesticide application practices, whose losses can reach 99%. Here, we investigated the uptake and translocation of azoxystrobin, a systemic pesticide, encapsulated within porous hollow silica nanoparticles (PHSNs) of a mean diameter of 253 ± 73 nm, following foliar application on tomato plants. The PHSNs had 67% loading efficiency for azoxystrobin and enabled its controlled release over several days. Thus, the nanoencapsulated pesticide was taken up and distributed more slowly than the nonencapsulated pesticide. A total of 8.7 ± 1.3 μg of the azoxystrobin was quantified in different plant parts, 4 days after 20 μg of nanoencapsulated pesticide application on a single leaf of each plant. In parallel, the uptake and translocation of the PHSNs (as total Si and particulate SiO2) in the plant were characterized. The total Si translocated after 4 days was 15.5 ± 1.6 μg, and the uptake rate and translocation patterns for PHSNs were different from their pesticide load. Notably, PHSNs were translocated throughout the plant, although they were much larger than known size-exclusion limits (reportedly below 50 nm) in plant tissues, which points to knowledge gaps in the translocation mechanisms of nanoparticles in plants. The translocation patterns of azoxystrobin vary significantly following foliar uptake of the nanosilica-encapsulated and nonencapsulated pesticide formulations.

In the ensuing century after the initial discovery, the pathogen has gained global attention in plant pathology research, providing insights into host-pathogen interactions, pathogen evolution, and effector discovery, such as the first discovery of transcription activation-like effectors, among many others. Four distinct genetic groups, including Xanthomonas euvesicatoria (proposed name: X. euvesicatoria pv. euvesicatoria), Xanthomonas perforans (proposed name: X. euvesicatoria pv. perforans), Xanthomonas gardneri (proposed name: Xanthomonas hortorum pv. gardneri), and Xanthomonas vesicatoria, are known to cause bacterial spot disease. Recently, a new race of a bacterial spot pathogen, race T5, which is a product of recombination between at least two Xanthomonas species, was reported in Nigeria. In this review, our focus is on the progress made on the African continent, vis-à-vis progress made in the global bacterial spot research community to provide a body of information useful for researchers in understanding the diversity, evolutionary changes, and management of the disease in Africa.

Abstract
Plants have complex internal signaling pathways to quickly adjust to environmental changes and harvest energy from the environment. Facing the growing population, there is an urgent need for plant transformation and precise monitoring of plant growth to improve crop yields. Nanotechnology, an interdisciplinary research field, has recently been boosting plant yields and meeting global energy needs. In this context, a new field, "plant nanoscience," which describes the interaction between plants and nanotechnology, emerges as the times require. Nanosensors, nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nano-plant genetic engineering are of great help in increasing crop yields. Nanogenerators are helping to develop the potential of plants in the field of energy harvesting. Furthermore, the uptake and internalization of nanomaterials in plants and the possible effects are also worthy of attention. In this review, a forward-looking perspective on the plant nanoscience is presented and feasible solutions for future food shortages and energy crises are provided.

DISEASE SYMPTOMS Symptoms include water-soaked areas surrounded by chlorosis turning into necrotic spots on all aerial parts of plants. On tomato fruits, small, water-soaked, or slightly raised pale-green spots with greenish-white halos are formed, ultimately becoming dark brown and slightly sunken with a scabby or wart-like surface. HOST RANGE Main and economically important hosts include different types of tomatoes and peppers. Alternative solanaceous and nonsolanaceous hosts include Datura spp., Hyoscyamus spp., Lycium spp., Nicotiana rustica, Physalis spp., Solanum spp., Amaranthus lividus, Emilia fosbergii, Euphorbia heterophylla, Nicandra physaloides, Physalis pubescens, Sida glomerata, and Solanum americanum. TAXONOMIC STATUS OF THE PATHOGEN Domain, Bacteria; phylum, Proteobacteria; class, Gammaproteobacteria; order, Xanthomonadales; family, Xanthomonadaceae; genus, Xanthomonas; species, X. euvesicatoria, X. hortorum, X. vesicatoria. Abstract
Copper (Cu) is the most extensively used bactericide worldwide in many agricultural production systems. However, intensive application of Cu bactericide have increased the selection pressure toward Cu-tolerant pathogens, including Xanthomonas perforans, the causal agent of tomato bacterial spot. However, alternatives for Cu bactericides are limited and have many drawbacks including plant damage and inconsistent effectiveness under field conditions. Also, potential ecological risk on nontarget organisms exposed to field runoff containing Cu is high. However, due to lack of alternatives for Cu, it is still widely used in tomato and other crops around the world in both conventional and organic production systems. In this study, a Cu-tolerant X. perforans strain GEV485, which can tolerate eight tested commercial Cu bactericides, was used in all the field trials to evaluate the efficacy of MgO nanomaterial. Four field experiments were conducted to evaluate the impact of intensive application of MgO nanomaterial on tomato bacterial spot disease severity, and one field experiment was conducted to study the impact of soil accumulation of total and bioavailable Cu, Mg, Mn, and Zn. In the first two field experiments, twice-weekly applications of 200 μg/mL MgO significantly reduced disease severity by 29-38% less in comparison to a conventional Cu bactericide Kocide 3000 and 19-30% less in comparison to the water control applied at the same frequency (p = 0.05). The disease severity on MgO twice-weekly was 12-32% less than Kocide 3000 + Mancozeb treatment. Single weekly applications of MgO had 13-19% higher disease severity than twice weekly application of MgO. In the second set of two field trials, twice-weekly applications of MgO at 1000 μg/mL significantly reduced disease severity by 32-40% in comparison to water control applied at the same frequency (p = 0.05). There was no negative yield impact in any of the trials. The third field experiment demonstrated that application of MgO did not result in significant accumulation of total and bioavailable Mg, Mn, Cu, or Zn in the root-associated soil and in soil farther away from the production bed compared to the water control. However, Cu bactericide contributed to significantly higher Mn, Cu, and Zn accumulation in the soil compared to water control (p = 0.05). This study demonstrates that MgO nanomaterial could be an alternative for Cu bactericide and have potential in reducing risks associated with development of tolerant strains and for reducing Cu load in the environment.

Abstract
Tomato is an important crop grown worldwide. Various plant diseases cause massive losses in tomato plants due to diverse biotic agents. Bacterial spot of tomato (BST) is a worldwide disease that results in high losses in processed and fresh tomato. Xanthomonas perforans, an aerobic, single-flagellated, rod-shaped, Gram-negative plant pathogenic bacterium, is one of the leading causes of BST. Over the past three decades, X. perforans has increasingly been reported from tomato-growing regions and became a major bacterial disease. X. perforans thrives under high humidity and high temperature, which is commonplace in tropical and subtropical climates. Distinguishing symptoms of BST are necrotic lesions that can coalesce and cause a shot-hole appearance. X. perforans can occasionally cause fruit symptoms depending on disease pressure during fruit development. Short-distance movement in the field is mainly dependent on wind-driven rain, whereas long distance movement occurs through contaminated seed or plant material. X. perforans harbors a suite of effectors that increase pathogen virulence, fitness, and dissemination. BST management mainly relies on copper-based compounds; however, resistance is widespread. Alternative compounds, such as nanomaterials, are currently being evaluated and show high potential for BST management. Resistance breeding remains difficult to attain due to limited resistant germplasm. While the increased genetic diversity and gain and loss of effectors in X. perforans limits the success of single-gene resistance, the adoption of effector-specific transgenes and quantitative resistance may lead to durable host resistance. However, further research that aims to more effectively implement novel management tools is required to curb disease spread. Abstract
The past decade has witnessed a phenomenal rise in nanotechnology research due to its broad range of applications in diverse fields including food safety, transportation, sustainable energy, environmental science, catalysis, and medicine. The distinctive properties of nanomaterials (nano-sized particles in the range of 1 to 100 nm) make them uniquely suitable for such wide range of functions. The nanoparticles when manufactured using green synthesis methods are especially desirable being devoid of harsh operating conditions (high temperature and pressure), hazardous chemicals, or addition of external stabilizing or capping agents. Numerous plants and microorganisms are being experimented upon for an eco–friendly, cost–effective, and biologically safe process optimization. This review provides a comprehensive overview on the green synthesis of metallic NPs using plants and microorganisms, factors affecting the synthesis, and characterization of synthesized NPs. The potential applications of metal NPs in various sectors have also been highlighted along with the major challenges involved with respect to toxicity and translational research.

Abstract
The applications of metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) in the sustainable development of agriculture and food security have received greater attention in recent years in the science community. Different biological resources have been employed to replace harmful chemicals to reduce metal salts and stabilize MNPs, i.e., green methods for the synthesis have paid attention to the nanobiotechnological advances. This review mainly focused on the applications of green synthesized MNPs for the agriculture sector and food security. Because of the novel domains, the green synthesized MNPs could be helpful in the different areas of agriculture like plant growth promotion, plant disease, and insect/pest management, fungicidal agent, in food security for food packaging, for increasing the shelf life and protection from spoilage, and other purposes. In the present review, the global scenario of the recent studies on the applications of green synthesized MNPs, particularly in sustainable agriculture and food security, is comprehensively discussed.

Abstract
The development of bacterial tolerance against pesticides poses a serious threat to the sustainability of food production. Widespread use of copper (Cu)-based products for plant disease management has led to the emergence of copper-tolerant pathogens such as Xanthomonas perforans (X. perforans) strains in Florida, which is very destructive to the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) industry. In this study, we report a hybrid nanoparticle (NP)-based system, coined Locally Systemic Pesticide (LSP), which has been designed for improved efficacy compared to conventional Cu-based bactericides against Cu-tolerant X. perforans. The silica core-shell structure of LSP particles makes it possible to host ultra-small Cu NPs (<10 nm) and quaternary ammonium (Quat) molecules on the shell. The morphology, release of Cu and Quat, and subsequent in vitro antimicrobial properties were characterized for LSP NPs with core diameters from 50 to 600 nm. A concentration of 4 μg mL-1 (Cu): 1 μg mL-1 (Quat) was found to be sufficient to inhibit the growth of Cu-tolerant X. perforans compared to 100 μg mL-1 (metallic Cu) required with standard Kocide 3000. Wetting properties of LSP exhibited contact angles below 60°, which constitutes a significant improvement from the 90° and 85° observed with water and Kocide 3000, respectively. The design was also found to provide slow Cu release to the leaves upon water washes, and to mitigate the phytotoxicity of water-soluble Cu and Quat agents. With Cu and Quat bound to the LSP silica core-shell structure, no sign of phytotoxicity was observed even at 1000 μg mL-1 (Cu). In greenhouse and field experiments, LSP formulations significantly reduced the severity of bacterial spot disease compared to the water control. Overall, the study highlights the potential of using LSP particles as a candidate for managing tomato bacterial spot disease and beyond.

Modern agricultural practices have triggered the process of agricultural pollution. This process can cause the degradation of eco-systems, land, and environment owing to the modern-day by-products of agriculture. The substantial use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and, contaminated water for irrigation cause further damage to agriculture. The current scenario of the agriculture and food sector has therefore become unsustainable. Nanotechnology has provided innovative and resourceful frontiers to the agriculture sector by contributing practical applications in conventional agricultural ways and practices. There is a large possibility that agri-nanotechnology can have a significant impact on the sustainable agriculture and crop growth. Recent research has shown the potential of nanotechnology in improving the agriculture sector by enhancing the efficiency of agricultural inputs and providing solutions to agricultural problems for improving food productivity and security. The prospective use of nanoscale agrochemicals such as nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, nanosensors, and nanoformulations in agriculture has transformed traditional agro-practices, making them more sustainable and efficient. However, the application of these nano-products in real field situations raises concern about nanomaterial safety, exposure levels, and toxicological repercussions to the environment and human health. The present review gives an insight into recent advancements in nanotechnology-based agrochemicals that have revolutionized the agriculture sector. Further, the implementation barriers related to the nanomaterial use in agriculture, their commercialization potential, and the need for policy regulations to assess possible nano-agricultural risks are also discussed.

Abstract
Bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas spp. is one of the major diseases in tomato. Xanthomonas perforans is the main pathogen of bacterial spot on tomato in Florida. Currently, application of copper fungicides is the primary measure used to manage this disease. However, the development of copper resistance in X. perforans and accumulation of copper in the environment are major concerns for excessive use of copper-based products in agriculture. Due to its antibacterial properties and low environmental impact, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a small molecule commonly used in medicine for human bacterial diseases, has been studied in agriculture for the control of plant bacterial pathogens, including X. citri and Xylella fastidiosa. This study evaluated the effect of NAC alone and in combination with copper on a copper-resistant X. perforans strain in vitro and its ability to control bacterial spot of tomato under greenhouse and field conditions. In vitro, the minimum inhibitory concentration of NAC against the X. perforans strain was 2,048 mg liter-1. NAC increased sensitivity of the copper-resistant X. perforans to copper in vitro when application of NAC was followed by copper application after 6 h. In greenhouse assays, NAC applied alone or in combination with copper significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the disease severity of bacterial spot on tomato compared with the untreated control. NAC at 100 mg liter-1 + copper at 300 mg liter-1 consistently exhibited synergistic effects against bacterial spot. In the field trials, NAC at 1,000 mg liter-1 + copper at 150 mg liter-1 significantly reduced disease severity compared with the untreated control. Results from this study demonstrated that NAC significantly reduced the disease severity of bacterial spot of tomato and enhanced the efficacy of copper against copper-resistant X. perforans, indicating that NAC could be applied for the effective management of bacterial spot of tomato.

Abstract
In the current scenario, it is an urgent requirement to satisfy the nutritional demands of the rapidly growing global population. Using conventional farming, nearly one third of crops get damaged, mainly due to pest infestation, microbial attacks, natural disasters, poor soil quality, and lesser nutrient availability. More innovative technologies are immediately required to overcome these issues. In this regard, nanotechnology has contributed to the agrotechnological revolution that has imminent potential to reform the resilient agricultural system while promising food security. Therefore, nanoparticles are becoming a new-age material to transform modern agricultural practices. The variety of nanoparticle-based formulations, including nano-sized pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers, and sensors, have been widely investigated for plant health management and soil improvement. In-depth understanding of plant and nanomaterial interactions opens new avenues toward improving crop practices through increased properties such as disease resistance, crop yield, and nutrient utilization. In this review, we highlight the critical points to address current nanotechnology-based agricultural research that could benefit productivity and food security in future.

Abstract
Xanthomonas is a well-studied genus of bacterial plant pathogens whose members cause a variety of diseases in economically important crops worldwide. Genomic and functional studies of these phytopathogens have provided significant understanding of microbial-host interactions, bacterial virulence and host adaptation mechanisms including microbial ecology and epidemiology. In addition, several strains of Xanthomonas are important as producers of the extracellular polysaccharide, xanthan, used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. This polymer has also been implicated in several phases of the bacterial disease cycle. In this review, we summarise the current knowledge on the infection strategies and regulatory networks controlling virulence and adaptation mechanisms from Xanthomonas species and discuss the novel opportunities that this body of work has provided for disease control and plant health.

Abstract
Engineered nanoparticles have provided a basis for innovative agricultural applications, specifically in plant disease management. In this interdisciplinary study, by conducting comparison studies using macroscale magnesium oxide (mMgO), we evaluated the fungicidal activity of MgO nanoparticles (nMgO) against soilborne Phytophthora nicotianae and Thielaviopsis basicola for the first time under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. In vitro studies revealed that nMgO could inhibit fungal growth and spore germination and impede sporangium development more efficiently than could macroscale equivalents. Indispensably, direct contact interactions between nanoparticles and fungal cells or nanoparticle adsorption thereof were found, subsequently provoking cell morphological changes by scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, the disturbance of the zeta potential and accumulation of various modes of oxidative stress in nMgO-exposed fungal cells accounted for the underlying antifungal mechanism. In the greenhouse, approximately 36.58 and 42.35% decreases in tobacco black shank and black root rot disease, respectively, could testify to the efficiency by which 500 μg/ml of nMgO suppressed fungal invasion through root irrigation (the final control efficiency reached 50.20 and 62.10%, respectively) when compared with that of untreated controls or mMgO. This study will extend our understanding of nanoparticles potentially being adopted as an effective strategy for preventing diversified fungal infections in agricultural fields.

Abstract
Sustainable agriculture is a key component of the effort to meet the increased food demand of a rapidly increasing global population. Nano-biotechnology is a promising tool for sustainable agriculture. However, rather than acting as nanocarriers, some nanoparticles (NPs) with unique physiochemical properties inherently enhance plant growth and stress tolerance. This biological role of nanoparticles depends on their physiochemical properties, application method (foliar delivery, hydroponics, soil), and the applied concentration. Here we review the effects of the different types, properties, and concentrations of nanoparticles on plant growth and on various abiotic (salinity, drought, heat, high light, and heavy metals) and biotic (pathogens and herbivores) stresses. The ability of nanoparticles to stimulate plant growth by positive effects on seed germination, root or shoot growth, and biomass or grain yield is also considered. The information presented herein will allow researchers within and outside the nano-biotechnology field to better select the appropriate nanoparticles as starting materials in agricultural applications. Ultimately, a shift from testing/utilizing existing nanoparticles to designing specific nanoparticles based on agriculture needs will facilitate the use of nanotechnology in sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Bacterial spot of tomato, caused by Xanthomonas perforans, X. euvesicatoria, X. vesicatoria and X. gardneri, is a major disease, contributing to significant yield losses worldwide. Over dependence of conventional copper bactericides over the last decades has led to the prevalence of copper-tolerant strains of Xanthomonas spp., making copper bactericides ineffective. Thus, there is a critical need to develop new strategies for better management of copper-tolerant Xanthomonas spp. In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of a hybrid nanoparticle, copper-zinc (Cu/Zn), on copper-tolerant and sensitive strains. The hybrid nanoparticle significantly reduced bacterial growth in vitro compared to the non-treated and micron-size commercial copper controls. Tomato transplants treated with the hybrid nanoparticle had significantly reduced disease severity compared to the controls, and no phytotoxicity was observed on plants. We also studied the hybrid nanoparticle effect on the bacterial pigment xanthomonadin using Near-Infra Red Raman spectroscopy as an indicator of bacterial degradation. The hybrid nanoparticle significantly affected the ability of X. perforans in its production of xanthomonadin when compared with samples treated with micron-size copper or untreated. This study sheds new light on the potential utilization of this novel multi-site Cu/Zn hybrid nanoparticle for bacterial spot management.

Abstract
Edible plant fruits are safe raw materials free of toxicants and rich in biomolecules for reducing metal ions and stabilizing nanoparticles. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) are the most produced consumer nanomaterials and have known antibacterial activities but have rarely been used against phytopathogenic bacteria. Here, we synthesized ZnONPs and TiO2NPs simply by mixing ZnO or TiO2 solution with a lemon fruit extract at room temperature and showed their antibacterial activities against Dickeya dadantii, which causes sweet potato stem and root rot disease occurring in major sweet potato planting areas in China. Ultraviolet–visible spectrometry and energy dispersive spectroscopy determined their physiochemical characteristics. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy revealed the nanoscale size and polymorphic crystalline structures of the ZnONPs and TiO2NPs. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed their surface stabilization groups from the lemon fruit extract. In contrast to ZnO and TiO2, which had no antibacterial activity against D. dadantii, ZnONPs and TiO2NPs showed inhibitions on D. dadantii growth, swimming motility, biofilm formation, and maceration of sweet potato tuber slices. ZnONPs and TiO2NPs showed similar extents of antibacterial activities, which increased with the increase of nanoparticle concentrations, and inhibited about 60% of D. dadantii activities at the concentration of 50 µg∙mL−1. The green synthetic ZnONPs and TiO2NPs can be used to control the sweet potato soft rot disease by control of pathogen contamination of seed tubers.

Abstract
Bacterial spot, caused by Xanthomonas spp., is a highly destructive disease of tomatoes worldwide. Copper (Cu) bactericides are often ineffective due to the presence of Cu-tolerant strains. Magnesium oxide (MgO) is an effective alternative to Cu bactericides against Xanthomonas spp. However, the effects of particle size on bactericidal activity and fruit elemental levels are unknown. In this study, nano (20 nm) and micron (0.3 and 0.6 µm) size MgO particles were compared for efficacy. Nano MgO had significantly greater in vitro bactericidal activity against Cu-tolerant X. perforans than micron MgO at 25–50 µg/ml. In field experiments nano and micron MgO applied at 200 and 1,000 µg/ml were evaluated for disease control. Nano MgO at 200 µg/ml was the only treatment that consistently reduced disease severity compared to the untreated control. Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy revealed that nano MgO applications did not significantly alter Mg, Cu, Ca, K, Mn, P and S accumulation compared to fruits from the untreated plots. We demonstrated that although both nano MgO and micron MgO had bactericidal activity against Cu-tolerant strains in vitro, only nano MgO was effective in bacterial spot disease management under field conditions.

Abstract
This study was carried out to fabricate nickel oxide nanostructures (NONS) and to evaluate its ability to control Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) by direct antiviral activity as well as induction of systemic resistance in treated cucumber plants. The efficacy of nickel oxide nanostructures for control CMV in cucumber plants was biologically evaluated by a reduction in disease severity, reduction in CMV accumulation and expression of regulatory and defense-related genes. Cucumber plants treated with nickel oxide nanostructures showed incredible suppression of CMV infection compared with non-treated plants. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) showed a marked reduction in CMV accumulation in cucumber plants treated with nickel oxide nanostructures compared to untreated plants. Based on real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test, cucumber plants treated with nickel oxide nanostructures showed increased expression of regulatory and defense-related genes concerned in salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA)/ethylene (ET) signaling pathways. NONS nanostructures showed direct antiviral activity against CMV resulted in significant reduction in CMV severity and titer relative to untreated plants. Treatment with nickel oxide nanostructures significantly improved cucumber fresh and dry weights as well as number of leaves. The induction of systemic resistance towards CMV by NONS nanostructures considered a novel strategy and first report.

Abstract
Natural compounds and living organisms continue to play a limited role in crop protection, and few of them have reached the market, despite their attractiveness and the efforts made in research. Very often these products have negative characteristics compared to synthetic compounds, e.g., higher costs of production, lower effectiveness, lack of persistence, and inability to reach and penetrate the target plant. Conversely, nanotechnologies are having an enormous impact on all human activities, including agriculture, even if the production of some nanomaterials is not environmentally friendly or could have adverse effects on agriculture and the environment. Thus, certain nanomaterials could facilitate the development of formulated natural pesticides, making them more effective and more environmentally friendly. Nanoformulations can improve efficacy, reduce effective doses, and increase shelf-life and persistence. Such controlled-release products can improve delivery to the target pest. This review considers certain available nanomaterials and nanotechnologies for use in agriculture, discussing their properties and the feasibility of their use in sustainable crop protection, in particular, in improving the effectiveness of natural bio-based agrochemicals. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Plant bacterial diseases are routinely managed with scheduled treatments based on heavy metal compounds or on antibiotics; to reduce the negative environmental impact due to the use of such chemical compounds, as pollution or selection of antibiotic resistant pathogens, the integrated control management is required. In the frame of a sustainable agriculture the use of bacterial antagonists, biological agents, plant defence response elicitors or resistant host plant genotypes are the most effective approaches. In this work, cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) was applied to sterile distilled water, inducing the production of a hydrogen peroxide, nitrite and nitrate, and a pH reduction. In particular, an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) has been used to produce plasma activated water (PAW), that was firstly assayed in in vitro experiments and then in planta through application at the root apparatus of tomato plants, against Xanthomonas vesicatoria (Xv), the etiological agent of bacterial leaf spot. Moreover, the transcription abundance of five genes related to the plant defense was investigated in response to PAW treatment. PAW did not show direct antimicrobial activity against Xv in in vitro experiments, but it enhanced the tomato plants defenses. It was effective in reducing the disease severity by giving relative protections of ca. 61, 51 and 38% when applied 1 h, 24 h and 6 days before the experimental inoculation, respectively. In addition, the experiments highlighted the pal gene involvement in response to the PAW treatments and against the pathogen; its transcription levels resulted significantly high from 1 to 48 h until their decrease 192 h after PAW application.

Abstract
Bacterial blight, caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae, Xap is a serious threat to commercially successful pomegranate (Punica granatum L) crop. Owing to the non-availability of disease-resistant varieties of pomegranate, integrated disease management involving change of season, adequate nutrition, and preventive sprays of bactericides is used to control Xap. We undertook a systematic study to assess the efficacy of metal-based nanomaterials (Cu, CuO, ZnO, CaO, MgO) for the control of Xap. The antimicrobial effectiveness was in the order Cu > ZnO > MgO > CuO with MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) 2.5, 20, 190, 200, and 1600 μg/ml. A time-to-kill curve indicated that Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs) killed Xap cells within 30 min at 2.5 μg/ml. Under controlled conditions (polyhouse), foliar application of CuNPs (400 μg/ml) resulted in ~ 90 and ~ 15% disease reduction in 6-month-old infected plants at early (disease severity 10%) and established (disease severity 40%) stages of infection, respectively. In a subsequent field study on severely infected 7-year-old plants, applications of nanoparticles reduced the disease incidence by ~ 20% as compared to untreated control. Microscopic observations revealed that CuNPs reduced the bacterial colonization of the leaf surface. Anti-Xap activity of foliar applied CuNPs was on par with conventionally used copper oxychloride (3000 μg/ml) albeit at 8-fold reduced copper concentration. Thus, early disease detection and application of effective dosage of copper nanoparticles can indeed help the farmer in achieving rapid infection control. Further studies on use of combinations of nanoparticles for management of bacterial blight are warranted.

Abstract
Bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas perforans causes significant damage on tomato in Florida. Due to the presence of copper (Cu)-tolerant X. perforans strains, Cu bactericides are not effective in disease management. Hence, there is a critical need to find alternatives for Cu. Antibacterial activity of magnesium oxide (Nano-MgO), and other metal oxide nanoparticles, were evaluated against a Cu-tolerant and -sensitive X. perforans strain. In vitro experiments demonstrated high antibacterial activity of Nano-MgO against both strains compared with the commercial Cu. The minimum inhibitory concentration of Nano-MgO is 25 µg/ml and the minimum bactericidal concentration is 100 µg/ml against a Cu-tolerant X. perforans strain after 4 h of exposure. Structural changes in the bacterial membrane following exposure to Nano-MgO treatments compared with the controls were observed using transmission electron microscopy. In two greenhouse experiments with a Cu-tolerant strain, bacterial spot severity was significantly reduced by Nano-MgO at 200 µg/ml compared with Cu-ethylene bis-dithiocarbamate (grower standard), and the untreated control (P = 0.05). In three field experiments, Nano-MgO at 200 µg/ml significantly reduced disease severity with no negative impact on yield compared with the untreated control. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric analysis of the fruit confirmed that Nano-MgO application did not lead to the accumulation of Mg, Cu, Ca, K, Mn, P, and S. This study is the first to demonstrate the potential of Nano-MgO against bacterial spot of tomato.

Abstract
Field trials were conducted at two locations in Florida to evaluate transgenic tomato expressing the ELONGATION FACTOR TU RECEPTOR (EFR) gene from Arabidopsis thaliana, the Bs2 gene from pepper, or both Bs2 and EFR (Bs2/EFR) for managing bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum and bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas perforans. Expression of EFR or Bs2/EFR in the susceptible genotype Fla. 8000 significantly reduced bacterial wilt incidence (50 to 100%) and increased total yield (57 to 114%) relative to lines expressing only Bs2 or the nontransformed Fla. 8000 control, although the marketable yield was not significantly affected. Following harvest, surviving symptomatic and nonsymptomatic plants were assessed for colonization by R. solanacearum. There were no significant differences in the population at the lower stem. Interestingly, in the middle stem, no bacteria could be recovered from EFR or Bs2/EFR lines but viable bacterial populations were recovered from Bs2 and nontransformed control lines at 102 to 105 CFU/g of stem tissue. In growth-chamber experiments, the EFR transgenic tomato lines were found to be effective against seven different R. solanacearum strains isolated from the southeastern United States, indicating utility across the southeastern United States. In all of the bacterial spot trials, EFR and Bs2/EFR lines had significantly reduced disease severity (22 to 98%) compared with the Fla. 8000 control. The marketable and total yield of Bs2/EFR were significantly higher (43 to 170%) than Fla. 8000 control in three of four field trials. These results demonstrate for the first time the potential of using the EFR gene for field management of bacterial wilt and bacterial spot diseases of tomato.

Abstract
Engineered nanoparticles are materials between 1 and 100 nm and exist as metalloids, metallic oxides, nonmetals, and carbon nanomaterials and as functionalized dendrimers, liposomes, and quantum dots. Their small size, large surface area, and high reactivity have enabled their use as bactericides/ fungicides and nanofertilizers. Nanoparticles can be designed as biosensors for plant disease diagnostics and as delivery vehicles for genetic material, probes, and agrichemicals. In the past decade, reports of nanotechnology in phytopathology have grown exponentially. Nanomaterials have been integrated into disease management strategies and diagnostics and as molecular tools. Most reports summarized herein are directed toward pathogen inhibition using metalloid/metallic oxide nanoparticles as bactericides/fungicides and as nanofertilizers to enhance health. The use of nanoparticles as biosensors in plant disease diagnostics is also reviewed. As global demand for food production escalates against a changing climate, nanotechnology could sustainably mitigate many challenges in disease management by reducing chemical inputs and promoting rapid detection of pathogens.
