Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Understanding the social context of e-cigarette use in the United States (U.S.) remains a high priority. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we included 68,356 adults aged ≥18 from the All of Us research program's COVID-19 Participant Experience (COPE) survey who had complete e-cigarette use information. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression was used to examine the association between e-cigarette use (current, former, and never), psychological distress, and substance use. RESULTS In the sample, most were male (66.3 %) and white (81.9 %), with 2.9 % reporting former and 2.3 % current e-cigarette use. Individuals reporting former or current e-cigarette use had a higher prevalence of psychological distress (e.g., depressive symptoms: never 49.6 %, former 70.2 %, current 73.4 %) and substance use (e.g., cannabis: never 9.8 %, former 37.0 %, current 42.6 %) than never e-cigarette use. Compared with never use, current e-cigarette use was associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms (aOR, 1.53 95 % CI: 1.34-1.74), anxiety (aOR1.36, 1.19-1.57), suicidal ideation (aOR1.55, 1.32-1.82), stress (aOR1.41, 1.24-1.59), as well as, cannabis (aOR 2.72, 2.40-3.08), opioids (aOR1.92, 1.56-2.36), stimulants (aOR2.33, 1.91-2.83), sedatives (aOR1.68, 1.43-1.98), hallucinogens (aOR1.94, 1.28-2.90), and cocaine use (aOR1.85, 1.21-2.79). Similar significant associations were observed in former, occasional and daily e-cigarette use, with comparable estimates across sexes. CONCLUSION In this unique well-powered All of US dataset, there was a significant cross-sectional association between e-cigarette use, psychological distress, and substance use, indicating that the social context of e-cigarette use is closely linked to key well-being domains. These data provide high precision estimates that can be used to inform interventions aimed at creating awareness of e-cigarette use correlates.

Abstract
AIMS To assess the evidence for a relationship between the use of e-cigarettes and subsequent smoking in young people (≤29 years), and whether this differs by demographic characteristics. METHODS Systematic review with association direction plots (searches to April 2023). Screening, data extraction and critical appraisal followed Cochrane methods. Our primary outcome was the association between e-cigarette use, availability or both, and change in population rate of smoking in young people. The secondary outcomes were initiation, progression and cessation of smoking at individual level. We assessed certainty using Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE). RESULTS We included 126 studies. For our primary outcome, there was very low certainty evidence (limited by risk of bias and inconsistency) suggesting that e-cigarette use and availability were inversely associated with smoking in young people (i.e. as e-cigarettes became more available and/or used more widely, youth smoking rates went down or, conversely, as e-cigarettes were restricted, youth smoking rates went up). All secondary outcomes were judged to be very low certainty due to very serious risk of bias. Data consistently showed direct associations between vaping at baseline and smoking initiation (28 studies) and smoking progression (5 studies). The four studies contributing data on smoking cessation had mixed results, precluding drawing any conclusion on the direction of association. There was limited information to determine whether relationships varied by sociodemographic characteristics. CONCLUSION At an individual level, people who vape appear to be more likely to go on to smoke than people who do not vape; however, it is unclear if these behaviours are causally linked. Very low certainty evidence suggests that youth vaping and smoking could be inversely related.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Smoking cessation improves quality of life and increases life expectancy by up to a decade. Though two-thirds of people who smoke report a desire to quit, less than a quarter plan to quit within the coming month. The relative risks and benefits of e-cigarettes, proposed as a novel tool to support smoking cessation, are critical to monitor as the evidence evolves. AREAS COVERED This review summarizes the evidence for smoking cessation treatment, characteristics and pharmacology of e-cigarettes, support for e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, and relevant harm reduction principles. Populations at the highest risk for continued cigarette smoking (e.g. individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions) and those who are vulnerable to initiating nicotine use through access to e-cigarettes (e.g. adolescents), are also discussed. EXPERT OPINION Evidence indicating that e-cigarettes are comparable to nicotine replacement therapy points to their promise as a smoking cessation and harm reduction option for individuals who decline other treatment options. Future work should evaluate the comparative efficacy of e-cigarettes for historically excluded groups and the relative effects of specific products and monitor for any long-term effects. Evidence-based clinical guidelines are also needed to inform clinical practice in this rapidly evolving area.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The rapid growth in the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) among nonsmoking young adults is concerning, as it raises the potential for chronic vaping and nicotine addiction. A key characteristic of drug addiction is the elevated neural response to conditioned drug-related cues (i.e., cue reactivity). Generalized reactivity to both vaping and smoking cues may signify an increased risk for smoking initiation in nonsmoking vapers. In this study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to evaluate brain responses to vaping and smoking cues in young adult nonsmoking vapers. METHODS Sixty-six young adult nonsmoking vapers underwent functional MRI while viewing visual cues pertaining to vaping, smoking, and nicotine-unrelated unconditioned reward (i.e., food). A priori region-of-interest analysis combined with exploratory whole-brain analysis was performed to characterize neural reactivity to vaping and smoking cues in comparison to food cues. RESULTS The medial prefrontal cortex and the posterior cingulate cortex, regions that play a key role in drug cue reactivity, showed significantly increased neural response to vaping cues compared to food cues. The posterior cingulate cortex additionally showed increased neural responses to smoking cues compared to food cues. CONCLUSIONS Despite not currently smoking combustible cigarettes, young adult vapers exhibited heightened neural susceptibility to both vaping and smoking cues within brain systems associated with cue reactivity. The findings shed light on the mechanisms underlying nicotine addiction and smoking initiation risk in this critical population and may contribute to the development of science-based interventions and regulatory measures in the future. IMPLICATIONS The escalating vaping prevalence among US nonsmoking young adults is alarming, due to its potential ramifications for nicotine addiction development. Nicotine addiction is characterized by elevated neural response to conditioned nicotine-related cues. Using functional neuroimaging, we showed that young adult nonsmoking vapers exhibited heightened neural susceptibility to both vaping and smoking cues within brain systems previously associated with cue reactivity. Such cross-reactivity to both types of nicotine cues may serve as the mechanism underlying nicotine addiction and smoking initiation risk in this population. Our findings may contribute to the development of science-based interventions and regulatory measures addressing the vaping epidemic.

Abstract
Objective A cross-sectional survey was conducted to investigate the differences in preferences, gateway effects, and potential motivations for e-cigarette use among different genders of e-cigarette users in China, thereby providing ideas for the development of public prevention and intervention measures for e-cigarettes. Methods This study adopted a combination of online web questionnaires and offline distribution questionnaires to survey 640 e-cigarette users by snowball sampling and convenience sampling in China in 2023. We used the Potential E-Cigarette Dependence Scale, the E-Cigarette Preference Scale, and the General Information Scale to conduct the survey and assessment, and surveyed 360 individuals of those who only used traditional cigarettes for comparison. Results (1) The total number of participants in this research study was 1792, the mean age was 26.9 ± 9.0 years and the number of e-cigarette users was 640, of which 535 (83.6%) were males and 105 (16.4%) were females. (2) There was a statistically significant association between e-cigarette flavor preferences (flavor/nicotine) and gender (p < 0.05). Compared to males, females preferred e-cigarettes with scented/tobacco/fruit/beverage/nicotine (0 mg/12 mg) flavors. (3) Compared with males, females were more likely to "Transition to using traditional cigarettes after smoking e-cigarettes (Gateway effect)" (p < 0.05). (4) Whereas males were more likely to experience "Craving for traditional cigarettes after using e-cigarettes (Induction effect)" (p < 0.05). (5) There were significant gender differences in motivations for e-cigarette use. Males were more likely to use e-cigarettes to "quit traditional cigarettes," whereas e-cigarette use was more closely related to self-perceptions of "feeling cool." (6) Multi-factorial logistic regression analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between "e-cigarette liquid flavor (tobacco/fruit/beverage), e-cigarette liquid nicotine concentration (0 mg/12 mg)" and "Gender" (p < 0.05); Gateway effect was significantly correlated with "Gender and Age"(p < 0.05); E-cigarette addiction dependence was not significantly correlated with gender; Mild addiction to e-cigarettes was significantly correlated with "hope e-cigarettes carry nicotine, and the motivations for choosing e-cigarettes (to quit traditional cigarettes)" (p < 0.05). Severe addiction to e-cigarettes was significantly correlated with "hope e-cigarettes carry nicotine, and the motivations for choosing e-cigarettes (unable to use traditional cigarettes in public)" (p < 0.05). Conclusion Among Chinese e-cigarette users, females preferred e-cigarettes with special flavors, and either without or with middling concentrations of nicotine. The gateway effect was more prominent in females and adolescents, and the induction effect was more notable in males. There was no significant correlation between addiction dependence on e-cigarettes and gender. E-cigarette use was more likely to be motivated by a desire to quit using traditional cigarettes in males, whereas women were more likely to be motivated by "self-perception."

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth have higher rates of nicotine vaping than other youth in the United States. While social media can be effective in reaching youth and discouraging vaping, informed cultural tailoring is necessary to ensure effective messaging to SGM youth. This study aimed to understand SGM youth perspectives on anti-vaping social media messages and tailoring approaches. AIMS AND METHODS In-depth, qualitative videoconference interviews were conducted from February to July 2022 with 34 SGM youth recruited in the United States via social media ads. The interview guide addressed participants' beliefs about vaping, the context of vaping, perspectives on tailoring messages, and responses to examples of social media anti-vaping messages. Coding and thematic analysis followed a team-based approach. RESULTS SGM youth perspectives fell into four categories-representation and diversity, facts and evidence, empowering messages, and source credibility. Participants stressed the importance of accurate, genuine representation of SGM youth in messages, but also noted that more overt representation may be seen as tokenizing. Participants recommended partnering with known LGBTQ + influencers who can promote or share anti-vaping messages on social media platforms. They also recommended using culturally tailored language, including statistics specific to SGM youth, and invoking themes of empowerment to improve the relevance, reach, and effectiveness of anti-vaping campaigns. CONCLUSIONS Findings can inform future efforts to develop anti-vaping messages for SGM youth with effective reach through social media. Nuanced perspectives on SGM representation in messages suggest a careful approach to tailoring. Concerns around inauthenticity may be minimized by ensuring SGM youth are included in message development and dissemination. IMPLICATIONS This study describes the importance of being attentive to the tailoring preferences among the current generation of SGM youth. Findings will inform social media-based messaging strategies that discourage nicotine vaping tailored for SGM youth in health campaign material design and evaluation, ensuring that tailored messages are designed in ways that avoid unintended consequences. The study also describes methods for effectively engaging SGM youth in research to improve the relevance of health education materials for this population and increase reach, which in turn can lead to a reduction in vaping practices among SGM youth.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Half of adult cigar users report flavored cigars as their usual brand. The Food and Drug Administration proposed prohibiting "all characterizing flavors in cigars" and "menthol… in cigarettes." We provide evidence on cigar and cigarette transitions and a framework to assess the impact of a U.S. flavored cigar ban. AIMS AND METHODS Using Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health survey waves 1-4, we estimated use patterns and annual transitions among flavored cigars, non-flavored cigars, cigarettes, and among adults aged 18-34 and aged ≥35. We also consider electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)-related transitions. We developed a decision-theoretic framework for examining the impact of a flavored cigar ban alone, and the impact of a flavored cigar with a menthol cigarette ban with and without a non-tobacco flavored ENDS ban. RESULTS Cigar users exhibited less stable use than cigarette users, with a large portion of cigar users switching to cigarette use each year. Past studies provide limited information on transitions between cigar and ENDS use. Our policy framework suggests that imposing a flavored cigar ban alone may be partially undermined by the substitution of menthol cigarettes for flavored cigars. While adding a menthol cigarette to a flavored cigar ban is expected to improve public health, a simultaneously implemented ENDS may offset some of the gains. CONCLUSIONS Our analysis suggests the information necessary to gauge the public health impact of a cigar flavor ban alone and with flavor bans on cigarettes and ENDS. Further research is needed on ENDS vis-a'-vis cigar use, and the impact of enforcement and non-flavor-related policies on flavor ban effectiveness. IMPLICATIONS Unlike menthol cigarette use and menthol bans, flavored cigar use and flavored cigar bans have received minimal attention. Transitions from cigars, especially dual and flavored use, are generally common compared to cigarettes. Our policy framework suggests important public health impacts. A flavored cigar ban absent a menthol cigarette ban may be partially undermined by the substitution of menthol cigarettes for flavored cigars. Adding a menthol cigarette ban is expected to offset such substitution and improve public health. However, simultaneously adding an ENDS with a flavored cigar and menthol cigarette ban may reduce the public health impact of a menthol cigarette and cigar flavor ban since flavored cigar users would be less able to substitute a lower-risk alternative.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Flavored tobacco products increase appeal and lower barriers to nicotine addiction for young people. We compared environmental, psychosocial, behavioral, and demographic characteristics between youth who started with flavored and non-flavored (i.e., tobacco-flavored) combustible tobacco products (CTPs). METHODS We analyzed two representative US youth cohorts (baseline age 12-15) from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study (Wave 1 Cohort (W1) 2013-2016; Wave 4 Cohort (W4) 2016-2019). We first assessed baseline characteristics associated with any subsequent CTP initiation among youth with baseline never CTP use (W1 n=5,946; W4 n=8,240). Then, for baseline CTP-naïve youth with subsequent CTP initiation (new experimentation; W1 n=519; W4 n=538), we assessed baseline characteristics associated with subsequent initiation with flavored CTPs versus non-flavored. RESULTS Most youth reporting new CTP experimentation initiated with flavored CTPs (W1:67.8%; W4:74.2%). Household norms, susceptibility, baseline experimentation with vaping, alcohol, and/or cannabis; and White race were associated with CTP experimentation. For both cohorts, frequent social media use was associated with flavored CTP initiation (W4 AOR:2.50, 95%CI:1.22,5.12) and Black youth (W4 AOR:0.12, 95%CI:0.06,0.25) were less likely to initiate with flavored CTPs than White youth. Among W1 Cohort youth, perceiving flavored product use as easier was positively associated with flavored CTP initiation (AOR:1.48, 95%CI:1.01,2.17). Among W4 Cohort youth, baseline vaping was negatively associated with flavored CTP initiation (AOR:0.10, 95%CI:0.05,0.20). CONCLUSION Frequent social media use was associated with flavored CTP initiation among youth who used CTPs. Youth who had ever vaped and Black youth were less likely to initiate with flavored CTPs.

Abstract
Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors are vulnerable to future health complications and engage in risky health behaviors. Vaping or electronic cigarette use is increasing among AYA, yet little is known about the prevalence in AYA cancer survivors and associated morbidities. The objective of this research was to analyze the current state of the literature on vaping among AYA cancer survivors with scoping review methodology. Eligibility criteria included any vaping among people aged 13-39 years with cancer or a history of cancer. Database searches from PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Scopus yielded eight cross-sectional studies. Results suggest significant variability, with studies finding 2%-46% of AYA survivors have ever or currently vape. Medical (e.g., late effects), psychosocial (e.g., depression), and demographic correlates (e.g., younger age, male gender), as well as other risky health behaviors (e.g., cigarette smoking) were shown to be associated with vaping. Though the extant research is beginning the task of understanding comorbidities with vaping, few research has focused on those most vulnerable to vaping (survivors under age 18). More research is required to understand AYA survivors' vaping behavior to better understand the significance and implications regarding the growing incidence of vaping among this vulnerable population.

Abstract
E-cigarette use is increasing rapidly across the world. Governments have begun to tighten regulation principally to prevent uptake by young people and non-smokers. As tobacco industry ownership of the e-cigarette market grows, it is important to be aware of how industry is seeking to influence the regulation of e-cigarettes. Using thematic analysis, this research examines the explicit arguments and implicit tactics used in responses from the tobacco industry and linked organizations to Scotland's 2022 consultation 'Vaping Products-Tightening Rules on Advertising and Promoting'. The themes that emerged in the analysis were compared to tactics and arguments identified in past research on the tobacco industry to look for continuations and divergences. While the research finds continuation of historic arguments and tactics being used in the submissions, it also highlights important novel tactics and framings employed by tobacco industry actors, including incorporating outdated data and calling for UK-wide policy despite this being a devolved issue. Policymakers must remain alert to the strategies being used by the tobacco industry, so they are able to prioritize public health rather than the interests of industries that put profit before health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize and compare transitions in cannabis (THC) vaping by sociodemographic and other risk factors among a diverse cohort of youth and young adults observed between Spring 2019 and Fall 2021. METHODS We analyzed six (6) waves of panel data from n = 2605 youth transitioning into young adulthood via the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance (TATAMS) system; participants provided N = 13,974 observations (i.e., completed surveys). The TATAMS sample was 37.7% Hispanic, 31.7% NH-White, 14.5% NH-Black, and 16.1% among NH-Other. We applied a three-state Markov model to estimate cannabis vaping initiation (never→ever), experimentation (never→current), escalation (ever→current), and de-escalation (current→ever). First, we compared transitions in THC vaping by race/ethnicity, with non-Hispanic (NH) Black as the referent. Second, we stratified the Markov models by race/ethnicity to identify common and unique predictors of cannabis vaping transitions, examining differences by: sex, age, alcohol use, depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7) and nicotine vaping, across each race/ethnic category. RESULTS At baseline, 72.7% never vaped cannabis, 12.7% ever vaped cannabis, and 14.5% currently vaped cannabis. Across three years, risk for cannabis vaping experimentation (never → current) was significantly greater among NH-Blacks, relative to Hispanics (aHR: 1.89), NH-Whites (aHR: 2.27), and NH-Other (aHR: 2.01). Stratified models showed that current alcohol use was a common predictor of cannabis vaping experimentation among NH-White (aHR: 5.08), Hispanic (aHR: 2.32), and NH-Black (aHR: 2.91) participants. Depression predicted cannabis vaping initiation among Hispanics (aHR: 1.75) and experimentation among NH-Blacks (aHR: 3.95). CONCLUSIONS Onset of cannabis vaping during youth and young adulthood was most common among NH-Black youth, relative to other race/ethnic categories. Alcohol was a common predictor of cannabis vaping across race/ethnic categories while depression was linked to cannabis vaping transitions among Hispanic and NH-Black youth, only. Future research should investigate the link between alcohol use, mental health, and cannabis vaping among young people.

Abstract
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Singapore’s journey towards a smoke-free society started early in the 1970s when legislations were introduced to restrict smoking in certain public spaces and ban tobacco advertising.1 The National Smoking Control Programme was launched in 1986 with important objectives set to prevent youths from picking up the smoking habit, help current smokers quit, protect non-smokers from second-hand smoke, and tighten regulations against smoking. Public health campaigns and outreach programmes to schools, youth organisations, army camps and workplaces were conducted. There was widespread dissemination of information on the hazards of smoking through mass media coverage and printed materials. Singapore was among the first 40 countries to ratify the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, with its 6 recommendations supporting tobacco cessation—including monitoring tobacco use, protecting people from tobacco smoke, offering smoking cessation assistance, warning dangers of tobacco, enforcing bans on tobacco advertising, and raising taxes on tobacco.2

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review and synthesise the findings of modelling studies on the population impacts of e-cigarette use and to identify potential gaps requiring future investigation. DATA SOURCE AND STUDY SELECTION Four databases were searched for modelling studies of e-cigarette use on population health published between 2010 and 2023. A total of 32 studies were included. DATA EXTRACTION Data on study characteristics, model attributes and estimates of population impacts including health outcomes and smoking prevalence were extracted from each article. The findings were synthesised narratively. DATA SYNTHESIS The introduction of e-cigarettes was predicted to lead to decreased smoking-related mortality, increased quality-adjusted life-years and reduced health system costs in 29 studies. Seventeen studies predicted a lower prevalence of cigarette smoking. Models that predicted negative population impacts assumed very high e-cigarette initiation rates among non-smokers and that e-cigarette use would discourage smoking cessation by a large margin. The majority of the studies were based on US population data and few studies included factors other than smoking status, such as jurisdictional tobacco control policies or social influence. CONCLUSIONS A population increase in e-cigarette use may result in lower smoking prevalence and reduced burden of disease in the long run, especially if their use can be restricted to assisting smoking cessation. Given the assumption-dependent nature of modelling outcomes, future modelling studies should consider incorporating different policy options in their projection exercises, using shorter time horizons and expanding their modelling to low-income and middle-income countries where smoking rates remain relatively high.

INTRODUCTION Youth use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is rising globally and is associated with health harms. Flavor descriptions on e-liquid packaging may contribute to the appeal of e-cigarettes among youth. This study compared subjective ratings of e-liquid packaging flavor descriptions among nonsmoking and non-vaping UK adolescents. AIMS AND METHODS This was an online observational study in a UK sample of nonsmoking and non-vaping adolescents aged 11-17 years. The primary analyses compared flavored versus unflavored descriptions and the secondary analyses compared sweet flavor versus fruit flavor descriptions. Outcomes were packaging appraisal, packaging receptivity, perceived harm, and perceived audience. RESULTS The survey was completed by 120 participants (74% female). Packaging appraisal ratings were higher for e-liquids with flavored descriptions than unflavored descriptions (mean difference 5.9, 95% CI: 4.2 to 7.6, p < .001). Similarly, packaging receptivity ratings were higher for e-liquids with flavored descriptions than unflavored descriptions (mean difference 4.2, 95% CI: 2.8 to 5.6, p < .001). Participants also perceived e-liquids with flavored (vs. unflavored) descriptions as less "grown-up" (mean difference -5.2, 95% CI: -7.3 to -3.1, p < .001). However, ratings of perceived harm were similar for flavored and unflavored descriptions (mean difference -1.0, 95% CI: -2.6 to .5, p = .189). CONCLUSIONS Although this study found differences in subjective ratings of e-liquids with flavored and unflavored descriptions, nonsmoking and non-vaping UK adolescents generally had low appraisal and receptivity for e-liquids and they perceived them as being "grown-up" and harmful. IMPLICATIONS Youth use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is increasing globally, leading to concerns about health harms. This study compared adolescents' ratings of e-liquids with flavored versus unflavored descriptions and e-liquids with sweet flavor versus fruit flavor descriptions. This study adds to previous studies that have compared adolescents' ratings of e-liquids with tobacco flavor versus non-tobacco flavor descriptions. Although packaging appraisal and receptivity ratings were higher (more positive) for e-liquids with flavored versus unflavored descriptions, overall, adolescents who do not smoke or vape had low appraisal and receptivity for e-liquids, and they perceived them as being "grown-up" and harmful.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Youth vaping has become an issue of extreme concern in the Australian public and political discourse, recently culminating in the announcement of further restrictions on the sale and use of nicotine vaping products (NVPs) by the Federal Government. We examine how youth vaping has been framed in the Australian news media in the six months leading up to the announcement of these new measures in May 2023. METHODS Drawing a sample from the Factiva database, we conducted a frame analysis on articles published during this six month period, identifying media framings that included the necessary components of a distinct Problem Definition, Causal Attribution, Moral Evaluation, and Treatment Recommendation. RESULTS We identified 123 relevant articles, and four dominant framings being applied. Most common was that of A Failure of Control, followed by A Poisonous Epidemic, A Health Behaviour Needing Regulation, and A Moral Failure. CONCLUSION These findings are discussed in the context of moral panic theory and how framings are constructed by the media in collaboration with policy actors to support particular policy measures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND If US adults who smoke cigarettes are switching to e-cigarettes, the effect may be observable at the population level: smoking prevalence should decline as e-cigarette prevalence increases, especially in sub-populations with highest e-cigarette use. This study aimed to assess such effects in recent nationally-representative data. METHODS We updated a prior analysis with the latest available National Health Interview Survey data through 2022. Data were cross-sectional estimates of the yearly prevalence of smoking and e-cigarette use, respectively, among US adults and among specific age, race/ethnicity, and sex subpopulations. Non-linear models were fitted to observed smoking prevalence in the pre-e-cigarette era, with a range of 'cut-off' years explored (i.e., between when e-cigarettes were first introduced to when they became widely available). These trends were projected forward to predict what smoking prevalence would have been if pre-e-cigarette era trends had continued uninterrupted. The difference between actual and predicted smoking prevalence ('discrepancy') was compared to e-cigarette use prevalence in each year in the e-cigarette era to investigate whether the observed decline in smoking was statistically associated with e-cigarette use. RESULTS Observed smoking prevalence in the e-cigarette era was significantly lower than expected based on pre-e-cigarette era trends; these discrepancies in smoking prevalence grew as e-cigarette use prevalence increased, and were larger in subpopulations with higher e-cigarette use, especially younger adults aged 18-34. Results were robust to sensitivity tests varying the analysis design. CONCLUSIONS Population-level data continue to suggest that smoking prevalence has declined at an accelerated rate in the last decade in ways correlated with increased uptake of e-cigarette use.

Abstract
Background There has been a rapid rise in disposable (single-use) e-cigarette vaping among young adults in England since June 2021 (leading to a planned ban on these products). We examined how this has affected population trends in current (i) vaping, (ii) tobacco smoking, and (iii) inhaled nicotine use. Methods We used data from a nationally-representative monthly repeat cross-sectional survey of adults (≥18) in England (n = 132,252; July-2016-May-2023). Using interrupted time-series analyses (segmented logistic regression), we estimated yearly trends in current tobacco smoking, vaping, and inhaled nicotine use (smoking and/or vaping) before ('pre-disposables') and after June-2021 ('post-disposables'), stratified by age group (18 to 24, 25 to 44, 45 and over). We also examined trends in daily use and in vaping among never-smokers. Findings Pre-disposables, vaping and smoking prevalence had been stable or declining across all age groups. However, post-disposables, the odds of current vaping increased by 99% per year among 18 to 24-year-olds (odds ratio [OR] = 1.99; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.71 to 2.31), compared with 39% (OR = 1.39; 95% CI = 1.26 to 1.52) in 25 to 44-year-olds and 23% (OR = 1.23; 95% CI = 1.12 to 1.35) in those aged 45 or older. Smoking rates continued to decline - albeit modestly - in 18 to 24-year-olds (OR = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.77 to 1.00) and 25 to 44-year-olds (OR = 0.93, 95% CI = 0.86 to 1.00), but increased among those aged 45 or older (OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.05 to 1.20). As a result, post-disposables, the overall prevalence of inhaled nicotine use increased across all age groups. Trends were similar for daily use, but post-disposables increases in vaping were greatest among people who had never regularly smoked (e.g., 18 to 24-year-olds: OR = 2.50, 95% CI = 1.82 to 3.43). Interpretation Since disposable vapes started becoming popular in England, historic declines in nicotine use have reversed. Now, nicotine use appears to be rising, driven primarily by sharp increases in vaping among young people. Abstract
INTRODUCTION We quantified the linear trend in combustible tobacco smoking among adolescents in the United States from 2014 to 2020, and then compared these trends across racial and ethnic categories. We also tested the effect of e-cigarette use on these trends for all-youth and across racial and ethnic categories. AIMS AND METHODS We pooled and analyzed seven years of National Youth Tobacco Survey data for n = 124 151 middle and high school students from 2014 to 2020. Weighted logistic regression analyses calculated the annual change in combustible tobacco smoking (ie cigarettes, cigars, and hookah) from 2014 to 2020. Stratified analyses examined linear trends for non-Hispanic White (NHW), NH-Black (NHB), Hispanic/Latino, and NH-Other (NHO) youth. All-models controlled for sex, grade level, and past 30-day e-cigarette use. RESULTS Combustible tobacco smoking from 2014 to 2020 dropped by more than 50% for NHW youth, more than 40% for Latino and NHO youth, compared to just 16% among NHB youth. From 2014 to 2020, the odds of combustible tobacco smoking declined by 21.5% per year for NHWs, which was significantly greater than Hispanic/Latinos (17% per year; p = .025), NHOs (15.4% per year; p = .01), and NHBs (5.1% per year; p < .001), adjusting for sex, grade, and e-cigarette use. Trends and disparities in trends by race and ethnicity were observed independent of e-cigarette use. CONCLUSIONS Combustible tobacco smoking declined for all-youth but at significantly different rates across races and ethnicities. Notably, declines in combustible tobacco smoking are lagging among NHB youth. Interventions are critically needed to address this disparity. IMPLICATIONS A direct, evidence-based intervention to reduce combustible tobacco smoking among NHB youth is critically needed. Such tobacco control initiatives should follow the Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Framework, incorporating sustainable funding for school-based intervention, public health education, and adult cessation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The rapid increase in e-cigarette use over the past decade has triggered an important public health question on the potential association between e-cigarette use and combustible cigarette smoking. Following AMSTAR 2 and PRISMA guidelines, this evidence synthesis sought to identify and characterize any associations between e-cigarette use among individuals not smoking cigarettes and initiation of cigarette smoking. METHODS The protocol was registered on September 24, 2018 (PROSPERO 2018 CRD42018108540). Three databases were queried from January 01, 2007 to April 26, 2023. Search results were screened using the PICOS review method. RESULTS Among 55 included studies (40 "good" and 15 "fair"; evidence grade: "high") that adjusted for gender, age, and race/ethnicity between groups, generally, there was a significant association between non-regular e-cigarette use and initiation of cigarette smoking, further supported by the meta-analytic results (AOR 3.71; 95% CI 2.86-4.81). However, smoking initiation was most often measured as ever/current cigarette smoking. Two studies (quality: 2 "good") evaluated progression to regular cigarette smoking among individuals with regular use of e-cigarettes, and generally found no significant associations. One study ("good") evaluated smoking initiation among individuals with regular use of e-cigarettes, finding an increasing probability of ever smoking cigarettes with increased e-cigarette use. Twelve studies (10 "good" and two "fair") examining progression to regular smoking among individuals with non-regular use of e-cigarettes reported inconsistent findings. CONCLUSIONS Numerous methodological flaws in the body of literature limit the generalizability of these results to all individuals who are not smoking cigarettes with few studies measuring established/regular use/smoking of e-cigarettes and cigarettes. Further, studies did not control adequately for specific confounding variables representing common liabilities between e-cigarette use and cigarette smoking, nor did they account for sufficient follow-up durations. Collectively, these flaws limit the generalizability of findings to the question of an association between e-cigarette use and cigarette smoking initiation.

Abstract
E-cigarette use among youth in Canada has risen to epidemic proportions. E-cigarettes are also moderately useful smoking cessations aids. Restricting e-cigarettes to prescription only smoking cessation aids could help limit youth's access to them while keeping them available as therapies for patients who smoke conventional cigarettes. In Canada, drugs or devices must be approved by regulatory bodies such as Health Canada in order to become licensed prescription medications. A similar situation is underway in Australia, where e-cigarettes have been restricted to prescription only. This commentary explores the feasibility of a similar regulation for e-cigarettes in Canada as prescription smoking cessation aids.

Abstract
PURPOSE Explore the factors associated with the changes in smoking and electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use and susceptibility among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS We surveyed a cohort of students (7th-12th grade) from private schools in Guatemala. Baseline (May-September 2019) was conducted in-person and follow-up (June-November 2020) online during the lockdown. Separate Generalized Estimating Equations logistic models regressed current smoking (n = 3,729), current e-cigarette use (n = 3,729), smoking susceptibility among never-smokers (n = 2,596), and susceptibility to e-cigarette use among never-users (n = 1,597) on online ad exposure, visiting stores, social network smoking/e-cigarette use, substance use (alcohol, marihuana, and cigarette or e-cigarette), perceived harm of using cigarettes/e-cigarettes, sociodemographic characteristics, and survey wave. Interactions were assessed between time and ad exposures, friends smoking and e-cigarette use. RESULTS Frequency of store visits, exposure to online ads, and the use of cigarette and e-cigarette lowered at follow-up. Online e-cigarette ads, having family and friends who smoke, and current e-cigarette use increased the likelihood of being a current smoker. Frequent exposure to online e-cigarette ads, having family who use e-cigarettes, and being a current smoker were associated with higher likelihood of current e-cigarette use. Exposure to either online ads or having friends that smoke or use e-cigarettes, increased susceptibility to using either product. Interaction results showed that high exposure to online e-cigarette ads overtime increased the susceptibility to use e-cigarettes. DISCUSSION Exposure to online ads and friends and family cigarette and e-cigarette use increased adolescent consumption and susceptibility during the pandemic.

Abstract
Tobacco smoking is highly prevalent in persons with psychosis and is the leading cause of preventable mortality in this population. Less is known about tobacco smoking in persons with first episode psychosis (FEP) and there have been no estimates about the prevalence of nicotine vaping in FEP. This study reports rates of tobacco smoking and nicotine vaping in young people with FEP enrolled in Coordinated Specialty Care programs in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Using data collected from 2021 to 2023, we examined lifetime and recent smoking and vaping and compared smokers and vapers to nonusers on symptoms, functioning, and substance use. The sample included 445 participants aged 13-35 with recent psychosis onset. Assessments were collected by program staff. Overall, 28 % of participants engaged in either smoking or vaping within 30 days of the admission assessment. Smokers and vapers were disproportionately male, cannabis users, and had lower negative symptom severity than non-smokers. Vapers had higher role and social functioning. Both smoking and vaping were related to a longer time from psychosis onset to program enrollment. We compare these findings to previous studies and suggest steps for addressing smoking and vaping in this vulnerable population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study quantifies the longitudinal association between e-cigarette use and subsequent conventional cigarette initiation and vice versa among Thai youths. METHODS Data from a longitudinal survey of 6045 Thai seventh grade students with baseline in 2019 and the 12-month follow-up in 2020 were analysed using complex survey multivariate logistic regressions to assess whether e-cigarette use was associated with subsequent cigarette smoking (ever, current and dual product users at follow-up) among baseline never smokers. RESULTS Consistent with prior findings from other countries, among those who had never smoked cigarettes at baseline, ever e-cigarette users were more likely to try cigarette smoking (adjusted OR 4.44; 95% CI 2.23 to 8.86; p<0.001), or become dual users (adjusted OR 5.31; 95% CI 2.63 to 10.74; p<0.001) 1 year later. Baseline current e-cigarette users were more likely to become ever smokers (adjusted OR 5.37; 95% CI 1.82 to 15.90; p=0.005), current smokers (OR 3.92; 95% CI 1.69 to 9.14; p=0.003) and dual product users (adjusted OR 6.96; 95% CI 1.54 to 31.38; p=0.015) at the 12-month follow-up than non-e-cigarette users. Similarly, among never e-cigarette users at baseline, ever cigarette smoking were more likely to try e-cigarettes (adjusted OR 3.38; 95% CI 1.66 to 6.88; p=0.002), currently use e-cigarettes (adjusted OR 2.75; 95% CI 1.47 to 5.13; p=0.003) and currently use both e-cigarettes and cigarettes (adjusted OR 4.87; 95% CI 2.92 to 8.13; p<0.001) at the follow-up than never smokers. Among never e-cigarette users at baseline, current-cigarette smoking were more likely to try e-cigarettes (adjusted OR 6.21; 95% CI 2.58 to 14.95; p<0.001), currently use e-cigarettes (adjusted OR 2.80; 95% CI 1.27 to 6.14; p=0.014) and currently use both e-cigarettes and cigarettes (adjusted OR 7.70; 95% CI 3.45 to 17.19; p<0.001) at the follow-up than never smokers. CONCLUSIONS This longitudinal study in Asian low-income and middle-income countries supports the prospective association of youth e-cigarette use with subsequent smoking initiation and youth cigarette use with subsequent e-cigarette initiation that is similar to that observed in high-income Western countries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The majority of tobacco users have had their first contact with nicotine at a young age. The aim of this study was to explore the association between the first tobacco or nicotine product tried and the transition to regular product use in 28 European countries. METHODS A secondary analysis of participants aged 15-40 years (n=8884) from 28 countries was conducted (Eurobarometer wave 93.2; August-September 2020). Participants who reported having ever tried tobacco or nicotine products were asked which product they tried first. Self-reported history of tobacco use determined whether they were established users (≥1 time weekly) of a range of products at any point in their life. Multilevel logistic regression was used to measure the association between first product tried and becoming a regular user of tobacco or nicotine products. RESULTS There was large variation between countries in the proportion of participants aged ≤40 years that ever tried tobacco or nicotine; Estonia had the highest proportion of ever users (85.8%) and Poland had the lowest (38.9%). Among those who had ever tried tobacco or nicotine, boxed cigarettes were the most common first product (72.3%) and pipe was the least common (0.4%). Compared with those who first tried e-cigarettes, the odds of ever becoming a regular user of any tobacco or nicotine product were higher among those who first had hand-rolled cigarettes (adjusted OR, aOR 2.23; 95% CI 1.43 to 3.48) or boxed cigarettes (aOR 2.08; 95% CI1.43 to 3.02) and lower among those who first tried waterpipe (aOR 0.22; 95% CI 0.14 to 0.34). CONCLUSIONS Although this study cannot infer causality, the findings show that odds of becoming a regular tobacco user differs widely depending on the first product used. Better understanding of the associations between first product use and regular tobacco use could be informative to tobacco control policy-makers and help tailor prevention programmes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Electronic cigarettes are addictive and harmful, and flavour is a key factor determining their abuse liability. Both adult smokers and young non-smokers like sweet and fruity flavours in particular. In order to discourage e-cigarette use among youth, the Dutch government announced in 2020 to only allow tobacco flavours in e-liquids. We propose a restrictive list of flavourings that will only enable the production of e-liquids with a tobacco flavour. METHODS We used e-liquid ingredient data notified via the European Common Entry Gate system before the government's announcement. First, we classified all e-liquids into flavour categories, and continued with the set of flavourings present in tobacco e-liquids. Five selection criteria related to prevalence of use, chemical composition, flavour description and health effects were defined to compile a restrictive list of tobacco flavourings. RESULTS E-liquids marketed as having tobacco flavour contained 503 different flavourings, some with tobacco flavour, but also other (such as sweet) flavours. We excluded (1) 330 flavourings used in <0.5% of e-liquids, (2) 77 used less frequently in tobacco than in all e-liquids, (3) 13 plant extracts, (4) 60 that are sweet or not associated with a tobacco flavour and (5) 7 flavourings with hazardous properties. This resulted in a final list of 16 flavourings. CONCLUSIONS Implementing this restrictive list will likely discourage e-cigarette use among youth, but could also make e-cigarettes less attractive as smoking cessation aid.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking has been considered a major public health concern due to its serious impact on health. However, smokers intending to quit may find long-term abstinence challenging. When smoking an electronic cigarette (EC), users can experience a sensation and taste similar to that of smoking a combustible cigarette. Therefore, manufacturers promote these products as a viable substitute for combustible cigarettes. However, several researchers report the serious health impacts experienced by EC users. Therefore, this review aims to examine the health impacts of EC use. Based on the findings of the research papers reported in the literature, the role of EC as a smoking cessation tool is unclear. Several researchers have also reported a significant association between EC usage among non-smokers at baseline and the future initiation of combustible cigarette smoking. EC use significantly impacts user health. The nicotine that is present in EC e-liquids can elevate blood pressure, resulting in blood vessel constriction and an increase in heart rate, ultimately leading the body to an ischemic condition, resulting in myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and increased arterial stiffness. Researchers report a higher likelihood of prediabetes among EC users; its usage was associated with higher OR of having asthma attacks and higher OR of reporting depression and has an impact on birth outcomes among pregnant women. Men using EC are more likely to report erectile dysfunction than non-users. EC also has a significant impact on oral health, which includes periodontal diseases, mucosal lesions, irritation in the mouth and throat, reduced salivary flow, and an increased risk of developing cancer. The physical injury resulting from exploding EC is another health concern. The frequently burned areas included the hands, face, genitalia, and thighs. Marketers promote EC as an alternative to combustible cigarettes and a tool for quitting smoking. However, the Food and Drug Administration has not approved them for smoking cessation. EC can have a serious impact on the health of their users; hence, the findings of this paper have several implications, including the need for regulation of the sales and marketing of these products and educating the users on the impact of these products on their health and safety.

Abstract
Use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or 'vapes') has risen rapidly among young Australians in recent years. To combat this, on 2 May 2023, the Albanese Government announced a suite of reforms to reduce the desirability and accessibility of e-cigarettes to young people-including a ban on disposable e-cigarettes, restricting flavours, colours and nicotine content and requiring pharmaceutical-like packaging. While many have welcomed this announcement, the efficacy of such reforms in reducing the availability of e-cigarettes to young people remain to be seen, particularly given the current prescription-only model has done little to curb youth vaping. We argue that, in an uncertain landscape where e-cigarettes will likely remain accessible and desirable to young people, it is critical that we also upskill, empower and arm our young people with the skills, resilience, resources and knowledge to make informed and positive health decisions so that: (i) fewer young people opt to take up vaping (primary prevention); and (ii) among those who already do vape, more seek help earlier on to reduce or cease their use before dependency develops (secondary prevention). Schools are an ideal setting for the delivery of these programs, where they can be delivered en masse, integrated into existing alcohol and other drug programs and aligned with school curricula. Skills-based school prevention programs have demonstrated significant and sustained reductions in drug-related harms up to 7 years post-intervention. For as long as vapes remain widely available, desirable and purposefully marketed towards young people, we believe our best defence is self-defence.

Abstract
E-cigarette use (also known as "vaping") has become increasingly popular among adolescents over the past decade and grown into a significant public health concern in North America, the United Kingdom, and other countries. Concerns about this new trend have generated numerous new research studies. This aim of this study was to summarize recent scientific findings, with a focus on their relevance to clinicians working with adolescents. The first half covers epidemiology, risk factors for e-cigarette use, characteristics of e-cigarette use, youth perceptions of e-cigarettes, physical health risks of e-cigarettes, evidence for "gateway effects" of e-cigarette exposure on subsequent substance use, and the relationship between e-cigarette use and mental health. The review concludes with a clinical focus on assessment of youth who vape, psychoeducation for youth and families, clinical management of vaping, and regulatory considerations.

Abstract
E-cigarettes are harmful, addictive, and popular. In e-cigarettes, nicotine is often paired with food-flavors. How this pairing of nicotine and food cues influences neural processing warrants investigation, as in smokers, both types of cues activate similar brain regions. Additionally, while most e-cigarettes are sweet, savory e-cigarettes are seemingly absent, although savory flavors are commonly liked in food. To understand how smoking status and type of flavor modulate reactions to food-flavored e-cigarettes, in comparison to actual food, neural and subjective responses to food odors were measured in a 2 (sweet vs. savory odor) x2 (food vs. e-cigarette context) x2 (smokers vs. non-smokers) design in 22 occasional/light smokers and 25 non-smokers. During fMRI scanning, participants were exposed to sweet and savory odors and pictures creating the two contexts. Liking and wanting were repeatedly measured on a 100-unit visual-analogue-scale. Results show that sweet e-cigarettes were liked (Δ = 14.2 ± 1.7) and wanted (Δ = 39.5 ± 3.1) more than savory e-cigarettes, and their cues activated the anterior cingulate more (cluster-level qFDR = 0.003). Further, we observed context-dependent variations in insula response to odors (cluster-level qFDR = 0.023, and = 0.030). Savory odors in an e-cigarette context were wanted less than the same odors in a food-context (Δ = 32.8 ± 3.1). Smokers and non-smokers reacted similarly to flavored product cues. Our results indicate that the principles of flavor preference in food cannot directly be applied to e-cigarettes and that it is challenging to design sweet and savory e-cigarettes to appeal to smokers only.

Abstract
Introduction The rapid growth in the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) among young adults who have never smoked combustible cigarettes is concerning, as it raises the potential for chronic vaping and nicotine addiction. A key characteristic of drug addiction is the elevated neural response to conditioned drug-related cues (i.e., cue reactivity). Generalized reactivity to both vaping and smoking cues may signify an increased risk for smoking initiation in non- smoking vapers. In this study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to evaluate brain responses to vaping and smoking cues in young adult never-smoking vapers. Methods Sixty-six young adult never-smoking vapers underwent functional MRI while viewing visual cues pertaining to vaping, smoking, and nicotine-unrelated unconditioned reward (i.e., food). A priori region-of-interest analysis combined with exploratory whole-brain analysis was performed to characterize neural reactivity to vaping and smoking cues in comparison to food cues. Results The medial prefrontal cortex and the posterior cingulate cortex, regions that play a key role in drug cue reactivity, showed significantly increased neural response to vaping cues compared to food cues. The posterior cingulate cortex additionally showed increased neural responses to smoking cues compared to food cues. Conclusions Despite never having smoked combustible cigarettes, young adult vapers exhibited heightened neural susceptibility to both vaping and smoking cues within brain systems associated with cue reactivity. The findings shed light on the mechanisms underlying nicotine addiction and smoking initiation risk in this critical population and may contribute to the development of science-based interventions and regulatory measures in the future. IMPLICATIONS The escalating vaping prevalence among US never-smoking young adults is alarming, due to its potential ramifications for nicotine addiction development. Nicotine addiction is characterized by elevated neural response to conditioned nicotine-related cues. Using functional neuroimaging, we showed that young adult non-smoking vapers exhibited heightened neural susceptibility to both vaping and smoking cues within brain systems previously associated with cue reactivity. Such cross-reactivity to both types of nicotine cues may serve as the mechanism underlying nicotine addiction and smoking initiation risk in this population. Our findings may contribute to the development of science-based interventions and regulatory measures addressing the vaping epidemic.

Abstract
Background There is an ongoing debate about whether e-cigarettes act as a gateway to tobacco smoking or contribute to smoking cessation, and relevant studies are limited among Chinese adolescents. This cross-sectional study therefore aimed to explore the relationship between e-cigarette use and susceptibility to tobacco product use among Chinese high school students. Methods The study population comprised 107,633 never smokers and 19,377 former smokers, generated from the 2019 China National Youth Tobacco Survey. The primary independent variables of interest were ever e-cigarette use, current e-cigarette use, and the frequency of current e-cigarette use. The main outcome was the susceptibility to tobacco product use. Multilevel logistic regression was used to estimate the association between the primary independent variables of interest and the outcome variable. Moreover, two additional multilevel logistic regression models were fitted using two alternative definitions of the outcome as the sensitivity analyses. Results Among never smokers, students who ever used e-cigarettes were more likely to be susceptible to tobacco product use compared to students who never used e-cigarettes (AOR = 2.83, 95%CI = 2.59-3.08). Students who currently used e-cigarettes were more likely to be susceptible to tobacco product use than those who did not currently use e-cigarettes (AOR = 3.89, 95%CI = 3.21-4.72). Among former smokers, with the same settings of modeling, the AORs were 1.76 (95%CI = 1.62-1.91) and 3.16 (95%CI = 2.52-3.97), respectively. Similar results were obtained from the two sensitivity analyses. Conclusion Among Chinese high school students, both never smokers and former smokers, e-cigarette use, especially current e-cigarette use, was positively associated with susceptibility to tobacco product use. It is recommended to strengthen the monitoring of e-cigarettes and to provide targeted health education to adolescents.

Abstract
AIMS The aims of this study were to measure whether household bans on vaping were associated with lower odds of youth past-month vaping when compared with (1) otherwise similar youth whose households did not have a vaping ban (using coarsened exact matching); and (2) themselves in waves when their household did not have a ban (using hybrid panel models). We used the same analytical strategies to examine cross-sectional associations between household smoking bans and adolescents' past-month cigarette smoking. DESIGN This was a longitudinal study using data from a nationally representative sample of youth (age 12-17 years) in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. SETTING United States of America. PARTICIPANTS A total of 16 214 adolescents followed over 48 103 total observations (approximately three waves). MEASUREMENTS Measurements comprised youth past-month e-cigarette and cigarette use and parent-reported household bans on vaping and smoking. Potential confounders were prior adolescent smoking, vaping, and other nicotine product use; parent current smoking, vaping, and other nicotine use; adolescent peer e-cigarette/cigarette use; parental monitoring; and demographic characteristics. FINDINGS Before matching, smoking bans were associated with 46% lower odds of youth smoking [odds ratio (OR) = 0.54; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.41-0.70] and vaping bans with 37% lower odds of youth e-cigarette use (OR = 0.63; 95% CI = 0.50-0.80). However, households with and without bans differed significantly on all confounders before matching. After matching, household vaping bans were associated with 56% lower odds of youth vaping (OR = 0.44; 95% CI = 0.33-0.58). Results from hybrid panel models also revealed 37% lower odds of vaping in waves when youth lived in a vape-free household compared to waves when they did not (OR = 0.63; 95% CI = 0.50-0.78). Associations between smoking bans and youth smoking were not statistically significant after matching or when using hybrid panel models. CONCLUSIONS Household vaping bans appear to be associated with lower odds of past-month vaping among US adolescents, compared with similar youth whose households did not have a ban and to themselves in waves when their households did not have a ban.

Abstract
Introduction Vaping among North American youth has surfaced as a concerning public health epidemic. Increasing evidence of harms associated with E-cigarette use, especially among the young, has prompted urgency in addressing vaping. Although a number of individual behavior change campaigns have arisen as a result, little is known about which behavior change techniques are being employed to influence youth vaping behavior. In this study, we aimed to code all North American vaping prevention campaigns using the behavior change technique taxonomy (Version 1) to determine which behavior change techniques are being used. Methods We identified the sample of campaigns through systematic searches using Google. After applying the exclusion criteria, the campaigns were reviewed and coded for behavior change techniques. Results In total, 46 unique vaping prevention campaigns were identified, including 2 federal (1 from Canada, 1 from the U.S.), 43 U.S. state-level, and 1 Canadian provincial-level campaign(s). The number of behavior change technique categories and behavior change techniques in a campaign ranged from 0 to 5 (mean=1.56) and 0 to 6 (mean=2.13), respectively. Of the 16 possible behavior change technique categories, 4 were utilized across the campaigns, which included 5. Natural consequences (89%), 6. Comparison of behavior (22%), 13. Identity (20%), and 3. Social support (11%). Conclusions Only a small number of behavior change techniques were used in North American vaping prevention campaigns, with a heavy and often sole reliance on communicating the health consequences of use. Incorporating other promising behavior change techniques into future campaigns is likely a productive way forward to tackling the complex and multifaceted issue of youth vaping.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although many countries have banned tobacco advertising on traditional media platforms, the tobacco industry actively promotes their products via online channels. Adolescents are at high risk of exposure due to spending substantial time online. We examined the prevalence of adolescent exposure to online tobacco advertisements and promotions. METHODS We analyzed data from the Global Youth Tobacco Surveys (GYTS; 2013-2018; average response rate = 76.8%). We included 15 countries in four regions that measured self-reported exposure to tobacco advertising on the internet in the past month (N = 111,356, adolescents aged 11-18): Region of the Americas (Argentina, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru), African (Mauritius, Zimbabwe), European (Czech Republic, Turkey), and the Western Pacific (Micronesia, Macao, Papua New Guinea, Samoa). We calculated the prevalence of online exposure to tobacco advertising by past-month cigarette use. RESULTS Prevalence of adolescent exposure to online advertisements for tobacco products ranged from 18.2%-34.3% and 12.3%-34.4% for tobacco advertisements that "looked fun or cool". Exposure to online tobacco product advertisements was prevalent across countries, including those with advertising bans in place, and included adolescents who have never smoked (14.4%-28.4% exposed to any, 9.1%-31.0% exposed to fun or cool advertisements). Reporting seeing tobacco advertising online that looked fun or cool was positively associated with the prevalence of past-month smoking (r = 0.64, p = .010). DISCUSSION A substantial proportion of adolescents in countries that have banned tobacco advertising are still exposed to advertisements for tobacco products online. Internet tobacco advertising needs better enforcement to prevent adolescent tobacco use and uptake worldwide.

Abstract
The use of electronic cigarettes (i.e., e-cigarettes or vapes) has increased substantially among youth and young adults. While research has examined vaping cannabis and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), little exists related to vaping other drugs, such as opioids, despite the fact that opioids are a leading cause of drug overdoses associated deaths in the U.S. The current study aimed to review the current state of the literature related to vaping opioids given our experience of learning about a youth overdose related to vaping opioids in a public high school in the U.S. while we were engaged in conducting community-based research. Peer-reviewed research publications related to vaping opioids are minimal, although there are several newspaper articles published related to vaping opioids, with most being about youth vaping opioids in school. This is concerning given that media often misconstrue substance use, particularly related to fentanyl, and may provide inaccurate information that perpetuates stigma. Thus, it remains unclear the scope of the issue of vaping opioids. Therefore, we propose a call to action for researchers and public health officials outlining recommendations for increased surveillance, interventions to address vaping-related opioid use, and measures to curb serious adverse consequences of vaping-related opioid use to determine whether this is a rising public health concern and offer mitigation strategies.

Abstract
Prospective longitudinal studies mainly conclude on a causal role of e-cigarettes in the initiation of cigarettes in flagrant contradiction with conclusions drawn from epidemiology and other studies showing a sharp decline in cigarette use in parallel with the spread of e-cigarette use. This systematic review explores the reasons for this discrepancy. METHODS Among 84 publications on e-cigarette/cigarette association in adolescents identified in the Medline database from 2011 to 2022, 23 concern 22 never-smoker longitudinal sub-cohorts. RESULTS A link between e-cigarette experimentation at T1 and cigarette initiation at T2 is reported in sub-cohort analyses of never-smokers (AOR: 1.41 to 8.30). However, studies exclude 64.3% of T1 e-cigarette experimenters (because of dual-use) and 74.1% of T2 cigarette experimenters. With this study design, e-cigarettes contribute only to 5.3% of T2 cigarette experimentation, casting major doubt on the external validity of results and authors' conclusions that e-cigarettes have a significant effect on the initiation of cigarettes (Gateway effect) at the population level. This sub-cohort design prohibits highlighting any Diversion effect, which is the most likely mechanism accounting for the competition between these two products. CONCLUSIONS While nicotine abstinence remains the best medical option, over-regulation of e-cigarettes because of misinterpretation of longitudinal study results may be detrimental to public health and tobacco control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patterning of cigarette and e-cigarette use among young people remains poorly characterized. We aimed to describe these patterns in the UK Millennium Cohort Study at age 14 and 17 years. METHODS Data on cigarette and e-cigarette use come from 9731 adolescents. Latent class analysis assigned participants to membership of classes of product use and multinomial logistic regression analyses assessed differences in the likelihood of belonging to classes by sociodemographic (age, gender, ethnicity, household income, maternal education and country of residence) and smoking-related social factors (caregiver tobacco use, caregiver e-cigarette use and peer smoking). RESULTS We identified four classes of use: 45.8% of adolescents 'continued to abstain' from cigarettes or e-cigarettes; 21.3% 'experimented' (used once or in the past but not currently) with cigarettes and/or e-cigarettes by age 17 but were not current users; 19.0% were 'late adopters', characterized by low levels of use at age 14 but high levels of experimentation and current use at age 17; and 13.9% were 'early adopters', characterized by high levels of experimentation and current use at ages 14 and 17. At age 17, 70.4% of 'early adopters' smoked cigarettes regularly plus an additional 27.3% experimented with cigarettes. Corresponding percentages for e-cigarettes were 37.9% and 58.9%. Tobacco and e-cigarette use by caregivers, and cigarette use by peers, were associated with being both 'late adopters' and 'early adopters'. CONCLUSIONS Approximately one in seven adolescents in the UK are 'early adopters' of nicotine products. This highlights the need to develop and implement effective policies to prevent nicotine use uptake.

Abstract
Electronic cigarette is often promoted and perceived as an 'healthy' alternative compared to conventional cigarettes. However, growing body of evidence indicate the possible adverse health effect associated with e-cigarette. Here we reviewed the literature with a focus on metal exposure in relation to e-cigarette use and related toxicity endpoints. Twenty-nine studies were identified for full text screening after applying the screening criteria of which 5 in vitro studies and 11 epidemiological studies were included for data extraction. Cr, Cu, Ni, Sn are the most found metal in all studies. In vitro, metal from e-cigarette (liquid or aerosols) induced cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, genotoxicity and pro-inflammatory responses. It was observed that the presence of nicotine can influence metal-induced in vitro toxicity. Based on epidemiological studies, the metal burden in e-cigarette users showed to be elevated in different populations (including e.g. NHANES). However, most often such studies were limited by the missing user characteristics, and information of other potential sources of metal exposure. In general, metals from e-cigarette use can be associated with toxicity endpoints but to uncover the metal related hazard of e-cigarette in users, more detailed data on metals in vapors and e-liquids; user habits and user demographics are needed.

Abstract
The use of electronic cigarettes by young people has increased exponentially in the past decade due to various health and social influences. E-cigarettes, particularly those containing nicotine, can cause health complications and addiction, which may result in a subsequent initiation of psychoactive substance use. This systematic review and meta- analysis evaluated the prospective association between e-cigarette use and subsequent use of psychoactive substances in young people aged 10-24 years. Pooling of data from the identified longitudinal studies showed that ever e-cigarette users have an increased likelihood for subsequent cannabis, alcohol, and unprescribed Ritalin/Adderall use compared to never e-cigarette users. The findings indicate a need for interventions to reduce e-cigarette use in adolescents and young adults.

Abstract
Encouraging adult smokers who are uninterested or unwilling to quit, and would otherwise continue to smoke, to transition to potentially less harmful nicotine products such as electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) may positively impact population health. However, counterbalancing this benefit is the societal concern that ENDS may be used by never smokers and youth and serve as a 'gateway' into cigarette smoking. Data were analysed from two independent surveys of the prevalence and perceptions of myblu ENDS use in the United States. Total sample size was 22,232 young adults and 23,264 adults. Being curious to use myblu was 1.6-2.0 times more likely in young adult current smokers than young adult never smokers. This likelihood was 2.8 times greater for adult current smokers compared with adult never smokers in the perceptions survey, while in the prevalence survey, there was no difference between adult current and never smokers. Intentions to use myblu were significantly greater in young adult current smokers compared with young adult never smokers in both surveys and in adults in the prevalence survey. In all surveys and age cohorts, 124 of 45,496 participants (0.1% of the total survey population) reported first using myblu prior to smoking cigarettes and went on to become established smokers. Curiosity and intentions to use myblu were generally higher in current smokers compared with never smokers. There was minimal evidence to suggest the existence of a 'gateway' effect to established cigarette smoking among never-smoking myblu users.

Abstract
Tobacco, secondhand smoke (SHS), and alcohol, all carcinogens, are leading preventable cancer risk factors in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Since 2000, smoking and SHS exposure have significantly decreased in the region. Yet alcohol consumption remains high. The entry of nicotine-related products such as electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) threatens achievements made in tobacco control and chronic diseases prevention, including cancer. E-cigs use is likely associated with smoking initiation among adolescents who had never smoked and dual use with combustible tobacco products. Therefore, the LAC Code Against Cancer recommends to the public actions they can take to reduce their risk of cancer: 1. Don't smoke or use any type of tobacco. If you do, quitting is possible, with professional help if needed. Don't use e-cigarettes either, as they lead to tobacco use. 2. Make your home a smoke-free place. Respect and promote laws that ensure smoke-free spaces to protect our health. and 3. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages. This helps prevent several types of cancer. The Code recommends to policymakers a package of cost-effective policies based on the MPOWER and SAFER to prevent cancer at the population level. It also recommends that primary care health professionals: 1. Ask all their patients and their families whether they smoke or vape, inform them about the harms of smoking and vaping, and promote tobacco and nicotine related products cessation strategies among users. 2. Inform about the harms of exposure to SHS, especially among children, and promote smoke-free environments, and 3. Prevent alcohol use by their patients and their families, use tools to assess use, intensity, and frequency, and apply brief counseling intervention to support alcohol abstinence in primary care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The use of nicotine vaping products (NVPs) has increased in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region; however, it is uncertain what implications the presence and use of NVPs have for tobacco control. DESIGN In-depth interviews were conducted to explore ASEAN tobacco control experts' (n=11) views on the rise of NVP use in ASEAN LMICs, current NVP policies, the potential harm reduction and smoking cessation utilities of these devices, and what implications they may have for tobacco control. Data were analysed using inductive, reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS Five themes emerged: (1) NVPs threaten tobacco control in ASEAN LMICs; (2) commercial factors influence youth appeal and access: product attributes, marketing, supply chains; (3) opposition to the smoking cessation and harm reduction utilities of NVPs; (4) policies are inconsistent and fragmented in the region; and (5) tobacco industry power and tactics have been used to capture NVP markets. CONCLUSIONS ASEAN tobacco control experts believe that NVPs pose a threat to youth and non-smokers in LMICs in the region, largely because of tobacco industry NVP marketing activities. They do not support the use of NVPs for smoking cessation or harm reduction and call for more restrictions and consistent policy enforcement across the region to protect young people, while also cautiously recognising that use of NVPs may have some benefits for smokers.

Abstract
Background The rapid increase in electronic nicotine product (ENP) use among young people has been a global public health challenge, given the potential harm of ENPs and nicotine dependence. Many countries have recently introduced legislations to regulate ENPs, but the impacts of these policies are poorly understood. This systematic review aims to critically synthesise empirical studies on the effects of global regulations regarding ENPs on the prevalence of use, health outcomes and their determinants, using the 4A marketing mix framework (acceptability, affordability, accessibility and awareness). Methods Following the PRISMA guideline, we searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, and APA PsycINFO databases from inception until June 14, 2022 and performed citation searches on the included studies. Reviewed literature was restricted to peer-reviewed, English-language articles. We included all pre-post and quasi-experimental studies that evaluated the impacts of e-cigarette policies on the prevalence of ENP use and other health outcomes. A modified Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal checklist for quasi-experimental studies was used for quality assessment. Due to heterogeneity of the included studies, we conducted a narrative synthesis of evidence. Results Of 3991 unduplicated records screened, 48 (1.2%) met the inclusion criteria, most were from high-income countries in North America and Europe and 26 studies measured self-reported ENPs use. Flavour restrictions significantly decreased youth ENP use and taxation reduced adult use; mixed results were found for the impacts of age restrictions. Indoor vaping restrictions and the European Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) did not seem to reduce ENP use based on existing studies. Changes in determinants such as sales and perceptions corroborated our conclusions. Few studies assessed the impacts of other regulations such as advertising restrictions and retail licensing requirements. Conclusions Flavour restrictions and taxes have the strongest evidence to support effective control of ENPs, while others need powerful enforcement and meaningful penalties to ensure their effectiveness. Future research should focus on under-examined policies and differential impacts across sociodemographic characteristics and countries. Registration PROSPERO CRD42022337361.

Abstract
PURPOSE The current study assessed the association between cannabis use among youth never e-cigarette users and subsequent e-cigarette use. METHODS The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study is a nationally representative cohort study. Participants aged 12 years and older were selected using a 4-stage, stratified probability sample design from the US civilian, noninstitutionalized population. We included adolescents who participated in both wave 4.5 (2017-2018) and wave 5 (2018-2019) of Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health, and were never e-cigarette users at baseline (N = 9,925). Through multivariable logistic regressions, we examined the prospective association between cannabis use and subsequent e-cigarette use. RESULTS E-cigarette use at wave five was significantly more common among youth cannabis users at wave 4.5. The adjusted relative risks between ever cannabis use and subsequent past 12-month, past 30-day, and frequent e-cigarette use (≥20 days per month) were 1.53 (95% CI, 1.26-1.81), 1.70 (95% CI, 1.25-2.15), and 2.10 (95% CI, 1.17-3.03), respectively. The adjusted relative risks between past 30-day cannabis use and subsequent past 12-month, past 30-day, and frequent e-cigarette use were 1.54 (95% CI, 1.04-2.28), 2.01 (95% CI, 1.23-3.29), and 2.87 (95% CI, 1.44-5.71), respectively. We also found significant associations between ever cannabis vaping with subsequent e-cigarette use. DISCUSSION While previous research associates e-cigarette use with subsequent onset of cannabis use, we identify a reverse directional effect, where adolescent cannabis use is associated with increased likelihood of future e-cigarette use.
