Abstract
BACKGROUND Caring for a child with developmental disabilities (DD) is associated with significant stress and burden. Caregivers' experiences are influenced by factors such as poverty, stigma, and the lack of accessibility to services, equipment, and assistive devices. These factors are prevalent in a low-resource setting like Ghana which ultimately influences the experiences of caregivers. The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of caregivers of children with DD in the context of the Stress Process Model. METHODS The study employed a descriptive phenomenological design Caregivers of children with DD attending the Neurodevelopmental Clinic of a Teaching Hospital were purposively sampled. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews, reaching saturation with 14 participants. The interviews were audio-recorded transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Four main themes emerged: perception of caregiving, stressors faced by caregivers, negative health outcomes and coping strategies. Perception of caregiving had two sub-themes as stressful nature of caregiving and time-consuming. Six sub-themes were linked to stressors faced by caregivers: the child's ADL needs, communication barrier, managing challenging behaviour, child's health needs, unmet educational needs, and economic burden. Negative health outcomes had three sub-themes: decline in physical, mental and social well-being. While some caregivers used maladaptive coping strategies like blaming, others employed adaptive coping strategies like religious coping through prayer, self-encouragement and support from other family members. CONCLUSION The study highlights the complex interaction between caregivers' perception of their caregiving situation, the stressors they experience, their coping resources, and the negative health outcomes associated with caregiving. These findings underscore the need for context-specific caregiver programmes to mitigate the negative impacts of caregiving.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and quality of life (QOL), or overall level of well-being, in caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on the daily level. METHOD This study utilizes mobile ecological momentary assessment (mEMA) to capture daily experiences of caregivers of children with ASD over a period of 14 days. Utilizing mEMA, this study examines relations between sleep quality and QOL and the role of mood and physical health as mediators on the daily level, specifically for caregivers of children with ASD (n = 51). The data were analyzed using multilevel modeling by MLMed macro. RESULTS The results suggest that there is a significant positive relation between sleep quality and QOL across individuals. Surprisingly, there was a negative relation between sleep quality and QOL within individuals. The positive relationship between sleep quality and QOL across participants was explained through positive mood across individuals. Furthermore, this relationship also occurred through better physical health across and within individuals. CONCLUSION For caregivers of children with ASD, daily positive mood and better physical health explain the relationship between daily sleep quality and QOL. Understanding daily experiences of caregivers of children with ASD may inform interventions and practices aimed at improving sleep and its associated outcomes to ultimately improve caregiver well-being.

Abstract
Recent research shows prominent effects of pregnancy and the parenthood transition on structural brain characteristics in humans. Here, we present a comprehensive study of how parental status and number of children born/fathered links to markers of brain and cellular ageing in 36,323 UK Biobank participants (age range 44.57-82.06 years; 52% female). To assess global effects of parenting on the brain, we trained a 3D convolutional neural network on T1-weighted magnetic resonance images, and estimated brain age in a held-out test set. To investigate regional specificity, we extracted cortical and subcortical volumes using FreeSurfer, and ran hierarchical clustering to group regional volumes based on covariance. Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) derived from DNA was used as a marker of cellular ageing. We employed linear regression models to assess relationships between number of children, brain age, regional brain volumes, and LTL, and included interaction terms to probe sex differences in associations. Lastly, we used the brain measures and LTL as features in binary classification models, to determine if markers of brain and cellular ageing could predict parental status. The results showed associations between a greater number of children born/fathered and younger brain age in both females and males, with stronger effects observed in females. Volume-based analyses showed maternal effects in striatal and limbic regions, which were not evident in fathers. We found no evidence for associations between number of children and LTL. Classification of parental status showed an Area under the ROC Curve (AUC) of 0.57 for the brain age model, while the models using regional brain volumes and LTL as predictors showed AUCs of 0.52. Our findings align with previous population-based studies of middle- and older-aged parents, revealing subtle but significant associations between parental experience and neuroimaging-based surrogate markers of brain health. The findings further corroborate results from longitudinal cohort studies following parents across pregnancy and postpartum, potentially indicating that the parenthood transition is associated with long-term influences on brain health.

Abstract
The purpose of this project was to investigate potential correlates of family life impairment in families of young autistic children. This project incorporated measures of specific child and parent challenges in addition to a commonly used unidimensional measure of autism characteristics. In this way, we could assess whether such challenges explain variance in family life impairment, and whether their inclusion diminish associations between autism characteristics and family life impairment. Cross-sectional data were collected from 564 parents of autistic children aged 2 to 5 years who participated in a larger online study. Participants completed measures on child characteristics (autism characteristics, emotion dysregulation, speaking ability, flexibility, and sleep problems), parent depression, and family life impairment, using the Family Life Impairment Scale (FLIS). Multiple linear regression models were generated to examine whether any of the independent variables were associated with the four domains of the FLIS. Models controlled for child age and sex, parent education, and single-parent homes. All independent variables were associated with impairment in one or more FLIS domains. None of the primary independent variables were significantly associated with positive growth. More overt characteristics and behaviors (e.g., autism characteristics, reactivity, speaking ability, and flexibility) were associated with impairment in domains that reflected a family's ability to navigate the community. However, sleep challenges and parent and child emotional difficulties were most strongly associated with parent impairment. Findings suggests that families may have different needs across contexts and provide new avenues through which they might be better supported.

Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by stereotyped and repetitive behavior patterns. In addition to neurological and behavioral problems, individuals with ASD commonly experience otolaryngological comorbidities. Individuals with ASD often have auditory disorders including hearing loss and auditory processing disorders such as central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), as well as both chronic and recurrent otitis media. These challenges negatively impact a person's ability to effectively communicate and may further impact their neurological functioning, particularly when not appropriately treated. Individuals diagnosed with ASD also have difficulty sleeping which contributes to increased irritability and may further aggravate the core behavioral symptoms of autism. The individuals with ASD also have a higher rate of sinusitis which contributes to the worsening of the autism behavior phenotype. The high prevalence of otolaryngological comorbidities in individuals with ASD warrants a better collaboration between their various healthcare providers and otolaryngologists with expertise in auditory, sleep, and sinus disorders in pursuit of improving the quality of life of affected individuals and their families/caregivers.

Abstract
The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to delineate the concordance of objective and subjective measures of sleep in children with neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs). A systematic literature search identified 31 studies that compare objective and subjective estimates of sleep parameters in autism, ADHD or rare genetic syndromes associated with intellectual disability. The meta-analyses revealed smaller mean differences and larger correlations indicative of greater concordance for parameters associated with sleep scheduling compared to parameters associated with sleep duration and night awakenings. Relative to objective measures, subjective measures produced: 1) greater estimates of total sleep time, sleep efficiency and time in bed; and 2) lower estimates of wake after sleep onset and number of night awakenings. Subgroup analyses also revealed differences in concordance between measurement comparison types (e.g., stronger correlations between actigraphy and sleep diaries, compared to actigraphy and questionnaires) and NDC diagnostic groups. The results predominantly replicate concordance trends observed in typically-developing samples, although some NDC-specific patterns of concordance were identified. This indicates that objective and subjective sleep measures retain broadly similar properties across populations, although researchers and clinicians should be cautious of the impact of NDC-related characteristics on sleep parameter estimates. These findings should inform sleep assessment design and the interpretation of sleep parameter estimates in NDCs, increasing the rigour of sleep parameter description across research and clinical settings.

Abstract
Mothers of school-aged children ages 3 to 17 years with developmental disabilities (DDs) commonly report sleep problems in their children associated with impaired maternal sleep. However, existing research relies heavily on mothers' self-reported sleep. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of objectively measuring child and mother sleep-wake patterns using actigraphy and videosomnography. This was an observational pilot study. Mothers wore actigraphy watches and video-recorded their child's sleep for 7 nights. Mothers also completed a 7-day sleep diary and questionnaires on sleep quality, depressive symptoms, stress, and child sleep problems. Ten mothers (32-49 years) and ten children with DDs (8-12 years) completed this study. Half of the children were boys with autism spectrum disorders. We successfully recruited 77% of eligible mothers for the study during the pandemic. Eight mothers successfully wore the actigraphy, and nine successfully video-recorded their child's sleep. Mothers rated their participation positively and considered the data collection protocol acceptable. While mothers' sleep patterns from actigraphy were mostly within recommendations, self-reported sleep quality was poor. Child's sleep estimates from videosomnography showed children slept substantially less than recommended sleep hours. Mothers also reported a high frequency of child sleep problems. Consistent with this pattern, mothers also endorsed elevated stress and depression. The use of actigraphy and videosomnography is feasible. Objective sleep measurement for mothers' and children's sleep is needed with self-report to measure multidimensional aspects of sleep and discrepancies between objective and self-report sleep measures. Future studies can use multi-methods sleep measures and work toward interventions that can improve family sleep and reduce mothers' stress and depression.

Abstract
Sleep is a common challenge for parents with sick children and can impact parents' health, wellbeing, and caregiving responsibilities. Despite the vast research around parental sleep when their child is sick, the concept is not clearly defined. A phased principle-based concept analysis that includes triangulation of methods and quality criteria assessment was used to explore how the concept is described, used, and measured in the current literature. The aim was to analyse and clarify the conceptual, operational, and theoretical basis of parental sleep when their child is sick to produce an evidence-based definition and to identify knowledge gaps. A systematic literature search including databases CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsychARTICLES, PsychINFO, Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science, identified 546 articles. The final dataset comprised 74 articles published between 2005 and 2021 and was assessed using a criteria tool for principle-based concept analysis. Data were managed using NVivo, and thematic analysis was undertaken. A precise definition is not present in the literature. Various tools have been used to measure parents' sleep, as well as exploration via interviews, open-ended questions, and sleep diaries. The terminology used varied. Parental sleep when their child is sick is interrelated with other concepts (e.g., stress). A recommended definition is offered. A conceptual understanding of parental sleep when their child is sick will help to guide translational research and to conduct studies critical to clinical practice and research. Future research includes developing a measurement tool for parental sleep when their child is sick to be used in study design and future interventions.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Parental perceptions and experiences of community inclusion influence the community participation of families and children with a disability, although no measurement tools exist. OBJECTIVE To describe the initial development of the My Family's Accessibility and Community Engagement (MyFACE) tool. DESIGN MyFACE measures parental perceptions of community accessibility and engagement of families raising a child with a disability. Items represent common community activities rated on a 5-point Likert scale. COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) guided content validity, construct validity, and internal reliability testing. SETTING Australia. PARTICIPANTS Seventy-seven mothers of children with a disability provided data, with 69 complete data sets. RESULTS The nine-item MyFACE had excellent content and construct validity and good internal reliability (Cronbach's α = .85). Hypothesis testing correlated MyFACE with maternal factors (mental health and healthy behavior) and child factors (psychosocial issues). Three predictors together explained 27% of the variance in a significant model, F(3, 61) = 7.09, p < .001. The most important predictor was maternal depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Initial evaluation of the MyFACE tool suggests sound psychometric properties warranting further development. What This Article Adds: The MyFACE tool provides clinicians and researchers with a way to measure parental perceptions of community inclusion. Maternal depressive symptoms were predictive of MyFACE scores, indicating that to be effective, family participation may require clinicians to address maternal mental health and children's participation restrictions.

Abstract
Sleep disturbance is prevalent in caregivers and associated with negative physical, mental, and functional outcomes. This study examined the effects of sleep disturbance on daytime functions (sleepiness, fatigue, mood, cognitive alertness), care-related quality of life, and daily parenting interactions in 20 mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder for 10 consecutive days using ecological momentary assessment design. Participants responded about daytime functions four times and care-related quality of life and daily parenting interactions once using an online survey. Sleep disturbance was significantly related to all daytime functions and frustration with childcare. Therefore, development of sleep hygiene interventions is warranted to effectively reduce the impact of sleep disturbance and enable these mothers to better tackle daily physical and mental challenges.

Abstract
Caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience poorer sleep, but studies have not yet used objective measures to investigate how child and caregiver sleep affect each other. In this study, 29 mothers and their child with ASD aged between 6 and 16 years were recruited. Questionnaires measuring child autism, maternal depression, and maternal and child sleep quality were administered. Cortisol salivary samples were also obtained from the mothers over the course of a day. Results revealed that maternal depression is significantly correlated with their subjective sleep quality, sleep latency and daytime dysfunction. Child sleep quality was also found to be significantly correlated with ASD severity. In terms of maternal cortisol profiles, a significant number of mothers showed a flattened diurnal cortisol expression, and children of mothers with a flattened cortisol profile had significantly more sleep problems. Overall, results suggest that maternal and child sleep are affected by the child’s disability but also are mutually related. Future studies may consider employing measures such as actigraphy or somnography to quantify sleep quality and establish causal pathways between sleep, cortisol expression and caregiver and child outcomes. The present study has clinical implications in examining family sleep when considering treatment for ASD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We sought to characterize the current supports used by parents to care for children with medical complexity (CMC) at home and parental preferences for additional supports to meet identified gaps. METHOD Semistructured interviews were conducted with parents of 18 CMC. Interviews were transcribed then analyzed using a constant comparative approach. RESULTS Extended family and community offloaded nonmedical tasks, assisted financially, gave emotional reinforcement, and cared for CMC. Home health providers also directly cared for CMC, but access and quality varied. Government programs paid for in-home care, but eligibility varied. Parents wanted more paid home care but also more support completing nonmedical tasks, mitigating financial strains, and accessing mental health services. DISCUSSION Parents of CMC relied on family and community members to help fill existing gaps in-home care, but gaps remained, suggesting the need for more medical and social supports for the in-home care of CMC and their families.

Abstract
PURPOSE Social supports are critical to alleviate the psychological and physical burden of primary caregivers of children with disabilities. This study aims to (1) clarify how cerebral palsy in children affects caregiving burden of the mother, and (2) identify the social supports that can effectively reduce that burden. DESIGN AND METHODS This is a cross-sectional study in which mothers of children with cerebral palsy completed questionnaires and provided data regarding their child's condition, family support, social support usage, degree of satisfaction with supports, and caregiving burden. RESULTS We analyzed responses from 1190 mothers. Support usage, particularly of home-visit nursing, home care, home-visit rehabilitation, and mobility support, was higher in severely burdened groups. However, the proportion of satisfaction with social support in groups with light or no burden were higher, particularly in home care, home-visit rehabilitation, training/treatment, and short stays. Mothers whose children have an intellectual disability and gross exercise ≥1 in addition to tube feeding or intravenous nutrition especially felt a strong sense of burden. The most effective measure in reducing mother's sense of burden was short stays. CONCLUSIONS Mothers with children who can move and have an intellectual disability felt more burden compared with mothers of bedridden children. The findings clarify that supports, such as home care and short stays, have a significant impact on reducing the mother's sense of burden. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Due to the large sample size, we believe that the results can inform efforts to increase social support for caregivers.

Abstract
We investigated sleep quality, anxiety, and somatic symptoms of 330 parents of children aged 0–6 years with disabilities, and explored the features of their brain structure using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire-15, and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7. We compared these results with those of a control group of parents (n = 330) of children with typical development. The parents of children with disabilities were divided into a poor-sleep-quality subgroup and a good-sleep-quality subgroup, and then 20 parents from each subgroup were randomly selected for analysis of variance of magnetic resonance imaging scanning. There were significant positive correlations between scores on the three scales for the parents of children with disabilities, and their mean scores for all scales were also significantly higher than those of the control group. Moreover, among the parents of children with disabilities, those with poorer sleep quality had lower density of gray matter in brain regions related to emotional cognition. These results suggest that parents raising children with disabilities may have poorer sleep and be more likely to have somatic symptoms and generalized anxiety than are parents of children with typical development; furthermore, these effects may correspond to changes in brain structure.

Abstract
The bi-directional relationship between sleep and wake is recognized as important for all children. It is particularly consequential for children who have neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) or health conditions which challenge their sleep and biological rhythms, and their ability to maintain rhythms of participation in everyday activities. There are many studies which report the diverse reasons for disruption to sleep in these populations. Predominantly, there is focus on respiratory, pharmaceutical, and behavioral approaches to management. There is, however, little exploration and explanation of the important effects of body thermoregulation on children's sleep-wake patterns, and associated behaviors. Circadian patterns of sleep-wake are dependent on patterns of body temperature change, large enough to induce sleep preparedness but remaining within a range to avoid sleep disturbances when active thermoregulatory responses against heat or cold are elicited (to maintain thermoneutrality). Additionally, the subjective notion of thermal comfort (which coincides with the objective concept of thermoneutrality) is of interest as part of general comfort and associated behavioral responses for sleep onset and maintenance. Children's thermoregulation and thermal comfort are affected by diverse biological functions, as well as their participation in everyday activities, within their everyday environments. Hence, the aforementioned populations are additionally vulnerable to disruption of their thermoregulatory system and their capacity for balance of sleep and wakefulness. The purpose of this paper is to present hitherto overlooked information, for consideration by researchers and clinicians toward determining assessment and intervention approaches to support children's thermoregulation functions and promote their subjective thermal comfort, for improved regulation of their sleep and wake functions.

Abstract
Purpose of Review Sleep problems are a common comorbidity for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and research in this area has a relatively long history. Within this review, we first outline historic patterns in the field of sleep and ASD. Second, we conducted a systematic update and coded these studies based on their alignment with historic patterns. Research on ASD and sleep over the past two decades has primarily focused on four principal areas: (1) documenting the prevalence and types of sleep problems; (2) sleep problem treatment options and efficacy; (3) how sleep problems are associated with other behavioral, contextual, or biological elements; and (4) the impact of child sleep problems on families and care providers. The systematic update in this paper includes empirical studies published between 2018 and 2021 with terms for sleep and ASD within the title, keywords, or abstract. Recent Findings In sum, 60 studies fit the inclusion/exclusion criteria and most fit within the historic patterns noted above. Notable differences included more global representation in study samples, studies on the impacts of COVID-19, and a growing body of work on sleep problems as an early marker of ASD. The majority of studies focus on correlates of sleep problems noting less optimal behavioral, contextual, and biological elements are associated with sleep problems across development for children with ASD. Summary Recommendations for future directions include continued expansion of global and age representation across samples, a shift toward more treatment and implementation science, and studies that inform our mechanistic understanding of how sleep and ASD are connected. Abstract
BACKGROUND The sleep health of caregivers of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is often overlooked in clinical practice and research. This study characterizes the sleep health of caregivers of children with DMD (4-17 years) compared to parents of age-matched, unaffected children. We explore potential contributors to parental sleep efficiency and hypothesize that child awakenings will have a considerable influence on parental sleep efficiency. METHODS In this observational study, parents and their children were asked to wear the ActiGraph GT9X Link at night for 1 month. From these data, actigraphy variables (eg, percent sleep efficiency, nocturnal awakenings) were calculated and averaged for parents and children. We also used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to measure subjective sleep quality. MAIN FINDINGS Parents in the DMD group (n = 25, M = 84.5%) had significantly worse sleep efficiency compared to controls (n = 15, M = 87.8%, p = .048). This difference was sustained after controlling for parent age, child age, and average child awakenings (F(4, 23) = 2.68, p= .057, R2 = .32). Additionally, more parents in the DMD group scored as "poor sleepers" on the PSQI (above 5, 50%) compared to controls (23%), suggesting a strong, yet not statistically significant association between subjective poor sleep and group (χ2(1) = 2.47, p = .116, OR = 3.33). CONCLUSION Parents of children with DMD exhibit both objective and subjective differences suggesting their sleep is impaired. Interestingly, these sleep concerns are not significantly explained by child awakenings as hypothesized. Future research is needed to fully understand the prevalence and cause of poor sleep in a larger group of DMD caregivers as well as direct care for caregivers of children with disabilities.

The Key Organizational Factors in Healthcare Waste Management Practices of Libyan Public Hospitals. SUSTAINABILITY 2021. Abstract
This study aims to investigate factors contributing to healthcare waste management practices among Libyan public hospitals. The organizational culture and structure are proposed to have their effect upon hospital organizational units in charge of healthcare waste production by a theoretical review to develop two main hypotheses. Hence, this study used the stratified random sampling technique to select respondents such as top management officials, heads of departments, and administrators who work in all the hospitals located in the south of Libya, from whom data was collected. The data for the study was gathered via a survey questionnaire from Libyan public hospitals in the country’s southern region. A total of 210 questionnaires were distributed and 171 usable responses were received, yielding a 70% response rate. Though the findings of the study show some inconsistency, the two dimensions of the culture examined in this study are found to have a positive relationship and significant influence on the management practices of health waste. Besides, it shows the positive relationship between organizational structure and healthcare waste management practices (HWMP). However, the findings of this study suggested that nurses and cleaners’ practices should critically consider structure dimensions such as formalization as well as moderating variables such as hospital location and type of services supplied on the interactions to improve the management of healthcare waste in Libya’s public hospitals.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study was conducted to explore the degree to which caregiver burden is associated with sleep quality in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder, and to determine a statistically valid cutoff score for the Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI) in order to identify parents of risk of poor sleep quality. DESIGN AND METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis. We assessed caregiver burden with the CBI, sleep quality with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, emotional status with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and impact on family with the Impact on Family Scale. Caregiver burden was evaluated with a logistic regression analysis. The best fit model was used in a receiver operating characteristic analysis. Likelihood ratios and post-test probabilities were calculated. RESULTS A total of 116 parents were included in this study. Higher caregiver burden was associated with a reduction in sleep quality in the logistic regression analysis (p < 0.001). The area under the curve for the univariate burden test model (best fit) was 76.70 (p < 0.001). The cutoff score for poor sleep quality was caregiver burden ≥26.50. The post-test probability of poor sleep quality increased to 82.02% from a pre-test probability of 76.72%. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that caregiver burden is associated with sleep quality among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder. The findings suggest that a CBI cutoff score of 26.50 may help to detect risk of poor sleep quality in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder.

Abstract
AIM To describe: (1) the frequency and types of sleep problems, (2) parent-rated satisfaction with their child's and their own sleep, and (3) child factors related to the occurrence of sleep problems in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and their parents. The secondary objective was to compare the sleep outcomes of children with CP with those from typically developing children and their parents. METHOD The Sleep section of the 24-hour activity checklist was used to assess the sleep of children with CP and their parents and the sleep of typically developing children and their parents. RESULTS The sleep outcomes of 90 children with CP (median age 5y, range 0-11y, 53 males, 37 females, 84.4% ambulatory) and 157 typically developing peers (median age 5y, range 0-12y; 79 males, 78 females) and their parents were collected. Children with CP were more likely to have a sleep problem than typically developing children. Non-ambulatory children with CP were more severely affected by sleep problems than ambulatory children. The parents of non-ambulatory children were less satisfied about their child's and their own sleep. Waking up during the night, pain/discomfort in bed, and daytime fatigue were more common in children with CP and more prevalent in children who were non-ambulatory. INTERPRETATION These findings highlight the need to integrate sleep assessment into routine paediatric health care practice. What this paper adds Children with cerebral palsy (CP) are more likely to have a sleep problem than typically developing peers. Non-ambulatory children with CP are more severely affected by sleep problems. One-third of parents of children with CP report feeling sleep-deprived often or always compared to a quarter of parents of typically developing children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with cerebral palsy (CP) are more likely to experience sleep problems. Their sleep difficulties have been shown to be related to poorer sleep quality for their parents and caregivers. While poor sleep has been linked with poorer psychological health in other populations, few studies have focused on the potential effects of children's and caregivers' sleep disturbance on caregivers' psychological health and well-being in families of children with CP. This study investigated the association between caregivers' psychological health and well-being and their sleep quality and the sleep of their children with CP. METHOD Ninety-four caregivers (86% mothers; age range = 29-76 years) of children with CP aged 4 to 14 years of varying physical abilities (Gross Motor Function Classification Scale expanded and revised-level I (24), II (20), III (16), IV (10), V (24)) were recruited from a state-wide rehabilitation service. Caregivers completed the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21, Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale, Resilience Scale, Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and a demographic questionnaire. RESULTS Sleep problems were reported for 55% of children. Poor sleep quality was reported by 71% of caregivers. While 25% of caregivers reported positive well-being and 86% reported high to very high levels of resilience, 44% reported poor psychological health. Child sleep problems were related to poorer caregiver sleep quality (r = 0.47, p < 0.001). Poorer caregiver sleep quality was related to poorer caregiver psychological health (r = 0.43-0.51, all p < 0.001) and well-being (r = -0.48, p < 0.001), but not resilience (r = 0.18, p = 0.11). CONCLUSIONS High numbers of children with CP and their caregivers experience poor sleep that extends far past infancy. Poor sleep quality is associated with poorer psychological health and well-being for caregivers. Further development of responsive support services that address caregivers' sleep is essential.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Studies on mothers of children with disabilities commonly report on their poor quality of life, high stress and mental health symptoms. However, the impact of caring for a child with disability on mother's everyday activities is less understood. The aim of this study is to explore the everyday activities of north-east and south-east Asian (NESEA) migrant mothers of children with disabilities, living in Australia. METHODS Informed by a grounded theory approach, this qualitative study used purposive snow-ball sampling to recruit NESEA mothers who had immigrated to Australia for at least two years and had at least one child with disabilities. Eleven mothers were interviewed. Grounded theory analysis was used to derive themes. RESULTS The overarching theme is 'Transforming'. Five subthemes emerged: 1) Journeying into the unknown; 2) Being the carer; 3) Being an immigrant; 4) Pillars of support; and 5) Empowered for everyday activities. CONCLUSION This study revealed the everyday activities and roles of NESEA immigrant mothers who have children with disabilities, their enablers and barriers in engaging in their valued activities and their positive transformation. Findings underpin the importance of facilitating mothers' participation in activities and roles that promote their well-being. Service providers and policy makers can create opportunities for immigrant mothers to participate in health promoting activities.

Abstract
CONTEXT Parental caregiving for a child with a life-limiting condition (LLC) is complex physical and mental work. The impact of this caregiving on parents' physical health is unknown. OBJECTIVES (1) To review existing evidence on the physical health of parents caring for a child with a LLC and (2) to determine how physical health of parents is measured. DATA SOURCES Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, and Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature were searched. STUDY SELECTION Peer-reviewed articles were included if they reported primary data on the physical health of a caregiver of a child with a LLC. Studies were excluded if they described only the caregiver's mental health or if the caregivers were bereaved at the time of data collection. DATA EXTRACTION Of 69 335 unique citations, 81 studies were included in the review. RESULTS Caregiver health was negatively impacted in 84% of studies. Pain and sleep disturbance were the most common problems. Ways of measuring the physical health of caregiver varied widely. We found an absence of in-depth explorations of the social and economic contexts, which could potentially mitigate the impact of caregiving. Furthermore, we find health interventions tailored to this group remain largely unexplored. LIMITATIONS Studies were heterogenous in methodology, making comparisons of results across studies difficult. CONCLUSIONS These findings support the need for improving access to interventions aimed at improving physical health in this population. The rate of health-seeking behaviors, preventive health care access and screening for health conditions is understudied and represent important directions for further research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM My Family's Accessibility and Community Engagement (My FACE) measures mothers' perceptions of community accessibility and engagement for families raising children with a disability. This study investigated the construct validity including the factor structure and internal reliability of the MyFace scale. METHODS Construct validity was evaluated using hypothesis testing. Structural validity was confirmed with factor analysis. Internal reliability was measured using Cronbach alpha. The nine-item MyFACE includes items representing common community destinations. A 5-point Likert scale measured perceptions of need for change and inclusion. RESULTS Mothers (N = 83) completed an online survey with MyFACE, maternal and childhood disability scales. Hypothesis testing revealed correlations with MyFACE: Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS)-stress (r = -.25, n = 72, p = .037), DASS-anxiety (r = -.41, n = 70, p < .001,), and DASS-depression (r = -.27, n = 72, p = .023,) scales. MyFACE scores correlated with mothers' total Health Promoting Activity Scale (HPAS) scores (r = .40, n = 74, p < .001). HPAS was the strongest predictor of variation in MyFACE scores F(5, 66) = 5.68, p < .001. Factor analysis demonstrated unidimensionality. Internal reliability was excellent (Cronbach alpha = .80). CONCLUSIONS The MyFACE tool is psychometrically sound. Compared to child factors, maternal mental health and health promoting behaviour had more influence on mothers' perceptions of family community accessibility and engagement. The MyFACE measures a unique, previously unmeasurable family construct.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder self-report more physical health problems than controls. Sleep disturbances are also more prevalent in caregivers, and are positively associated with physical health problems. The negative impact of caring for a child with ASD on physical health therefore, might occur indirectly via poorer sleep. METHODS Participants, of which n = 43 were caregivers and n = 17 were controls, completed self-report measures of physical health problems and, to capture objective measures of sleep, wore an actigraphy device. RESULTS Physical health problems were greater in caregivers, as were subjective reports of disturbed sleep. Objectively, waking after sleep onset (WASO) and average number of awakenings were higher, as was sleep latency, and sleep efficiency was poorer, in caregivers. Total sleep time however, was greater in caregivers, as was time in bed. Physical health problems, while unrelated to actigraphy measures, were positively associated with self-reported sleep disturbances. Caregivers' increased risk for physical health problems occurred indirectly via greater self-reports of disturbed sleep. CONCLUSIONS Interventions that help alleviate caregivers' sleep disturbances might be effective, by reducing physical health problems, for improving quality of provided care, and this might be explored in future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Everyday occupations refer to activities that people do associated with their roles, to bring meaning and purpose to life. The occupations of non-Asian mothers of children with disabilities have been well-documented but less is known about the occupations of East Asian mothers. AIMS This scoping review described the everyday occupations of East Asian mothers who have children with disabilities. METHODS A well-documented five-stage framework was utilised, guided by PRISMAScR. A search was conducted across five data bases for peer-reviewed research between 2008-2020, which informed the occupations of mothers living in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. RESULTS Thirty-two articles met criteria, of which twenty-nine were qualitative studies and three were mixed-methods studies. 415 mothers were represented. The themes were: doing, roles, volitional components and processes, cultural values and practices, environmental enablers, barriers and transformation, which provided rich description of various aspects of occupations of East Asian mothers, who have children with disabilities. CONCLUSIONS The everyday occupations of East Asian mothers who have children with disabilities were shaped by their cultural values. This review provided insights into mothers' activity choices and valued roles, which highlighted for practitioners in disability services, the importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity when supporting East Asian mothers and their families.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with intellectual and developmental difficulties often experience sleep problems, which in turn may impact parental sleep patterns. This study explored the role of parental sleep knowledge as a moderator on the relationship between child sleep and parental sleep impairment. METHODS 582 parents or caregivers (92.6% mothers) of children with different developmental disabilities (Age M = 9.34, 29.5% females) such as Down's syndrome, participated in an online survey. Multiple regression analysis was conducted. RESULTS Parental sleep knowledge of child sleep was a moderating variable in the relationship between child sleep nocturnal duration and parental sleep impairment. Although overall, sleep knowledge was high in this sample, two specific knowledge gaps were identified namely child sleep duration requirements, and the recognition of signs of a well-rested child. CONCLUSION This study has provided evidence that increased parental sleep knowledge can positively impact both child and parental sleep outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to determine the correlation between care burden and physical activity, quality of life, and sleep quality of mothers with disabled children. DESIGN AND METHODS The study was conducted with 165 mothers in a private rehabilitation center. FINDINGS There was a significant correlation between care burden and quality of life and sleep quality among mothers with disabled children. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS It is necessary for nurses to consult parents in terms of social support and to provide psychological support for families with disabled children to reduce the care burden of parents.

Abstract
Background: Published evidence to date suggests that sleep problems are common in children with cerebral palsy (CP). This qualitative study is a follow up to a previously published quantitative phase on the experience and impact of sleep problems in this population. Aims: The aim of this study was to explore the experience and impact of sleep disturbance and seeking of sleep solutions for parents of school aged children with CP. Materials and Methods: Semi-structured 19 qualitative interviews were conducted with parents of children with CP aged 6-12 years. Interview data were transcribed verbatim and the thematic analysis techniques by Braun and Clarke was used to identify themes. Results: Thematic analysis identified 7 themes: (1) My Child Doesn't Fit into the Box, (2) A Mother's Ears are Always On, (3) Sleep Disturbance is like Water Torture, (4) Sleep is One of Many Spot Fires, I Put it on the Backburner, (5) Luck, Money or Jumping Up and Down, (6) There is Never One Silver Bullet and (7) Help: The Earlier the Better. The key finding was that parents of children with CP often described their child's needs being distinct from what is provided by systems and services. Conclusion: Parents face significant challenges sourcing effective sleep solutions for their child with CP. Sleep is often not a priority for either the parent or the clinician as other health problems take precedence. Parents reflected that early sleep intervention for their child was or would have been helpful. The barriers and facilitators to sleep care identified in this study should be used to inform clinical change in care for children with CP. Sleep needs to be prioritized in healthcare for children.

Abstract
This qualitative study develops a programme theory demonstrating the complexity embedded in sleep hygiene education (SHE) as an intervention to improve sleep problems in children with developmental disabilities. In co-design workshops, eight parents and six sleep practitioners deliberated themes developed from findings of an earlier exploratory study of stakeholder perceptions of SHE. A SHE tool underpinned by programme theory was developed evidenced by mid-range theories of change. Analytical themes were developed to explain the programme theory and the complexities of a successful SHE intervention: the need to legitimize children's sleep problems and consider the nature of customization, knowledge sharing, health expectation and impact of sleep service rationing and gaming strategies on implementation success. Policy and practice implications include a need to raise the public profile of children's sleep problems and promote parental involvement in intervention implementation. Further research is needed to test out this theory-driven framework for evaluating SHE.

Abstract
Health-promoting behaviors have been shown to enhance the quality of life across diverse populations. In this study, we examined the indirect effects of several health-promoting behaviors on the relationship between parenting stress and health-related quality of life in mothers of children with cerebral palsy (CP). A convenience sample of Korean mothers (N = 180) of children aged 10 months to 12 years with CP was recruited from clinical and school settings. Health-promoting behaviors were measured using the health-promoting lifestyle profile II, which is comprised of six subscales: health responsibility, physical activity, nutrition, spiritual growth, interpersonal relations, and stress management. Multiple mediation analyses were conducted to examine the mediating role of these behavioral categories. Spiritual growth (β = .56, p < .05) had an indirect effect on the relationship between parenting stress and physical health-related quality of life while spiritual growth (β = -1.00, p < .01) and stress management (β = -.80, p < .05) were found to mediate the association between parenting stress and mental health-related quality of life. The findings of multiple mediation analyses provide evidence of the influence of specific health-promoting behaviors on health-related quality of life, thereby informing the development of intervention programs for mothers of children with disabilities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe and explore sleep problems in a population-based cohort of young children with cerebral palsy (CP) in Stockholm, Sweden. METHODS All children with CP, aged 5-10 years, and living in the Northern Karolinska University Hospital's catchment area were invited to participate in a cross-sectional study. Medical records obtained in the previous two-year period were reviewed, and a pre-planned parental telephone interview that included five structured questions and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) was conducted. RESULTS In total, 118 children, with a mean age of 7.4 years (SD 1.5), were included. Bilateral CP was present in 45%, unilateral in 37%, dyskinetic in 15%, and ataxic CP in 3%. Parents of 81% of the children participated in the interview. They reported sleep problems in 41% of their children, and in 80% of these children, night-time sleep was negatively affected by pain. Differences between the ISI total score in relation to CP subtypes (p < 0.025) and levels in GMFCS-E&R (p < 0.001) were detected, with increasing sleep problems for children with dyskinetic CP and children in GMFCS-E&R V. Sleep problems affected by pain were associated to the total score at ISI (rs = 0.83, p < 0.001, n = 95). CONCLUSION The results identified that sleep problems were present in more than 40% of children with CP. Sleep problems were more frequently and extensively present in children with dyskinetic CP and children in GMFCS-E&R level V. Sleep problems were associated with the presence of pain and, in particular, in the most severely affected children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study explored the feasibility and acceptability of a sleep health education intervention for caregivers of children with developmental disabilities (DD). DESIGN This mixed-methods pilot study utilized repeated measures and caregiver interviews. SETTING The intervention occurred in the homes of caregivers who live on the Navajo Nation. PARTICIPANTS Fifteen caregivers of children with DD aged from birth to 3 years old participated. INTERVENTION The intervention consisted of three 1-hour home-based sessions. Educational modules were tailored to specific sleep issues of the caregiver and their child(ren), as well as the unique environmental and cultural features of Navajo families. MEASUREMENTS Quantitative measures included a sleep habits questionnaire, pre- and postmeasures of learning, and the SF-12 HRQoL. Quantitative data were analyzed with frequencies and repeated measures analyses with p .05. Qualitative comments regarding facilitators and detractors to healthy sleep were transcribed verbatim and categorized into themes. RESULTS Caregiver sleep duration increased by 2 hours (5.8±1.8 to 7.8±1.9, p = .005). Caregivers also reported improved physical (45.0±8.2 to 52.8+8.7 p = .001) and mental HR-QoL (41.8±8.9 to 49.3±10.9, p = .002), and enhanced knowledge of sleep disorders (13.4±4.0 to 20.7±5.6) and healthy sleep habits (15.7±4.1 to 25.4±3.4 each p = .005). Many participants reported better sleep quality in their children with earlier bedtimes and less night waking. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that this tailored sleep education program is a culturally responsive approach to promoting caregiver sleep health and HR-QoL, as well as the sleep health of their children. Caregivers credited improved sleep to the support they received during visits and text messaging.

Abstract
Introduction Parents of children with disabilities experience long-term loss of occupations and increased caregiving responsibilities, which affect their individual and family quality of life. There is limited knowledge about the factors that influence the family quality of life of families when their child with disability is at school. This study examined the relationships between family quality of life, disability-related supports provided and parental occupations, and identified factors influencing family quality of life. Method A mixed-methods approach was utilised using the Beach Center Family Quality of Life Survey, a demographic questionnaire ( n = 50) and 12 qualitative interviews. Descriptive analyses and Spearman’s Rho correlations were conducted. Both sets of data were analysed and triangulated. Findings Participants reported high satisfaction with their family quality of life, with strong associations between parental occupations and family quality of life. Four qualitative themes highlighted that their family quality of life was hard, challenging and fluctuating; however, there were positives about having a child with disability, and receiving services and supports (formal and informal) for their child with disability helped family quality of life. In spite of this, caregiving was long-term and impacted their everyday occupations, challenging their family quality of life. Conclusion This study concludes that even though parents of a school-aged child with disability are happy to adopt the caregiver role and appreciate the positives of having a child with disability, lack of support within the mainstream schooling system and prolonged caregiving has a detrimental impact on the parents’ occupations, their health and wellbeing, and consequently on their family quality of life. Inadequate opportunities for recreation and lack of resources to manage persistent behaviours of concern highlight unequal participation opportunities for school-aged children with disabilities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to assess the influences of environment, population characteristics, and service utilization on participation frequency and involvement in the home setting among children 0 to 5 years. METHOD Data were collected from parents of 236 children (mean age 3 years and 5 months, SD = 1.30, girls = 152 and boys = 84) using a children's treatment centre in Ontario through an online survey. Two path models measuring home frequency and home involvement were assessed using structural equation modelling. The exogenous factors in the models included child's age, child's sex, child's complexity, number of environmental barriers, income, mother's participation, and service utilization. In addition to participation as the primary outcome, each model explored predictors of service utilization and mother's participation. RESULTS The involvement model (R2 = 0.46) explained more variance than the frequency model (R2 = 0.33). Age (0.35, P < 0.001) and barriers (0.07, P = 0.001) predicted participation frequency in the home, χ2 (9) = 8.51, P < 0.4, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.00, comparative fit index (CFI) = 1.00. The home involvement model, χ2 (6) = 9.79, P < 0.13, RMSEA = 0.06, CFI = 0.97, showed that increasing age (0.09, P < 0.001), lower complexity (0.13, P = 0.001), and higher mother's participation (0.057, P = 0.001) were significantly related to higher participation. An increase in child's age or complexity significantly influenced service utilization across both models. Complexity reduced mother's participation in both the frequency and involvement models. CONCLUSIONS This study is one of the first in Canada to examine participation of young children. The aggregation of each unit factor, particularly barriers and complexity, can accrue a large impact on the child's and mother's participation. The potential to mediate this impact by removing environmental barriers and promoting mother's participation merits further study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the differences in sleep, sleepiness, and physical activity (PA) between young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing controls (TDC). METHOD Actigraphic data and questionnaires on sleep, sleepiness, and PA were compared between fifteen adults with ASD (ADOS range 7-19; ages 22.8 ± 4.5 years) and TDC. RESULTS In comparison to the TDC group, the ASD group slept longer on average per night but took longer to fall asleep. In relationship to PA levels, the objective PA levels were lower in the ASD group than the TDC group. Fewer wake minutes during the sleep period in the ASD sample were associated with more PA the following day. CONCLUSION The findings support previous research that demonstrates differences in sleep parameters and PA between ASD and TDC. Interventions aimed at increasing PA in an ASD population may be beneficial for improved sleep.

Abstract
PURPOSE Caring for a child with cerebral palsy (CP) can impact both the physical and mental health of parents. However, determinants associated with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in these parents have yet to be adequately examined. The study aims were to identify the determinants affecting HRQOL among mothers of children with CP. DESIGN AND METHODS Participants in this cross-sectional study (N = 180) were mothers of children with CP recruited from clinical and school-based settings in Korea. Variables examined were characteristics of child (demographic factors and disability parameter), mother (demographic factors, number of chronic conditions, health-promoting behaviors (HPB), and parenting stress), and environmental factors (use of personal assistant care, leisure time and social support). Multivariate regression analysis was performed to examine the child, mother, and environmental factors associated with HRQOL. RESULTS The HRQOL results revealed that the physical HRQOL was higher than mental HRQOL in the sample. Longer length of disability of children and lower number of chronic conditions of mothers were significant factors of higher physical HRQOL. Lower parenting stress, more leisure time, engagement in HPB, and greater social support were significantly associated with higher mental HRQOL. CONCLUSIONS The levels of HRQOL of mothers of children with CP were very low and our findings suggest modifiable factors. Decreasing parenting stress, engaging in HPB, and providing social support should be considered when developing psychosocial intervention for this population. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Study results may inform programs aimed at health promotion, stress reduction, and QOL improvement among parents of children with disabilities.

Abstract
AIM We evaluated the impact that having a child with sleep-disordered breathing had on their parents, including their own sleep quality. METHODS Questionnaires were completed by 96 parents of 86 children referred for a sleep study or control of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or noninvasive ventilation (NIV) at the sleep laboratory of the Necker Hospital, Paris, France, between October 2015 and January 2016. The questionnaires evaluated anxiety and depression, family functioning, the parents' quality of life, daytime sleepiness and sleep quality. RESULTS The children had a mean age of seven ±five years and most of the responses (79%) came from their mothers. These showed that 26% of parents showed moderate-to-severe anxiety, 8% moderate-to-severe depression, 6% complex family cohesion, 59% moderate-to-severe daytime sleepiness and 54% poor sleep quality. Anxiety was higher in mothers than in fathers (p < 0.001). The questionnaire scores did not differ according to the child's age, the results of the sleep studies or the CPAP or NIV treatment. The symptoms seem to be more commonly related to the child's underlying disease than their sleep-disordered breathing. CONCLUSION The parents of children referred to a sleep laboratory reported frequent anxiety, daytime sleepiness and poor sleep quality.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To identify and review the literature on rural mothers' experiences in caring for a child with a chronic health condition. BACKGROUND Families living with a child who has a chronic health condition experience many challenges; these are often amplified for families living in rural areas, where issues such as the distance from services add further challenges the family must manage. Like many children, rural children with chronic health conditions are primarily cared for by their mothers. The additional strain of geography creates its own unique experiences for mothers who need to access the high-quality care that their child requires. DESIGN Integrative literature review using the Equator PRISMA guidelines. METHODS A search of databases; Cochrane, CINAHL, Ovid, PubMed, ProQuest Health and Medicine, Informit and Scopus for studies published between 2005-2016 using an integrative review approach. A total of 1,484 studies were identified with an additional six studies found through snowballing. The search resulted in seven studies being meeting the inclusion criteria after using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme. RESULTS Data from the seven articles were analysed, and the mothers' experiences were synthesised into five themes: "struggling for resources," "barriers in accessing services," "strain of decision-making," "mother's physical and emotional breakdown" and "the daily management of family activities". These five themes formed the basis of this article. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate that mothers from rural areas face additional barriers related to their rurality, including transportation difficulties, socioeconomic status and social isolation, and are challenged by limited access to specialty medical services, educators and allied health professionals. The literature review outcome will assist in informing nursing practice through identifying and allocating resources to reduce these barriers; rural mother experience will assist in enabling the child to reach their full developmental potential. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE There is a need for health professionals to understand the challenges and barriers rural mothers face in accessing services. Nurses can assist rural mothers to navigate and access the appropriate services in order to reduce health inequity, increase accessibility to services and reduce rural disadvantage for their child. Nurses and health professionals are in an ideal position to develop future models of care that optimise health outcomes and enable equity and access to services for rural children with chronic conditions similar to those experienced by their urban counterparts.

Abstract
Substantial research identifies mothers of children with a disability as a vulnerable group with compromised health outcomes and restrictions for their own self-care, social, economic and leisure participation. This study investigated perceptions and experiences of mothers following attendance at health education and empowerment workshops (Healthy Mothers Healthy Families). Mixed methods evaluated mothers' experiences. A pragmatic qualitative approach was applied to data analysis of interviews with mothers (N = 19). Four themes emerged: Changes for me; Changes for my family; Wisdom gained; and Worthwhile workshops. Mothers described feeling validated and empowered in this facilitated group intervention and valued education about women's health, tailored research findings, individualised goal setting, time to learn and share with other mothers, and the workshop environment.

Abstract
Parents of children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NDDs) are at risk of sleep loss. No comprehensive systematic reviews examining parental sleep outcomes in caregivers of children with NDDs exist. A systematic search was conducted between June and August 2016 examining sleep quantity, quality, sleepiness, and fatigue outcomes of caregivers of children with NDDs. Of 7,534 citations retrieved, 33 met eligibility criteria. Most studies ( n = 27) were cross-sectional, included a range of NDDs and were of "poor" ( n = 14) or "fair" ( n = 17) quality. Few good quality studies compared objectively measured sleep in parents of children with NDDs with parents with typically developing children. Parents of children with NDDs consistently reported significantly poorer subjective sleep quality. There is a paucity of good quality comparative studies, using well-validated measures, examining parental sleep outcomes. Future research should aim to fill this gap, providing greater insight to parents' experiences, and identifying targets for intervention design and evaluation.

Abstract
Impaired sleep can contribute to conditions such as cardiometabolic disorders, depression, and decreased immune function. Mothers of children with developmental disabilities (DDs) may be at greater risk for impaired sleep due to the sleep problems of their children. This cross-sectional study described the self-reported sleep characteristics of mothers of children (ages 6-12) with DDs by using a sleep diary and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) as quantitative and qualitative measures of sleep in these mothers. The Consensus Sleep Diary was modified to ascertain how the child's sleep and needs for care during the night impacted the mother's sleep. The results showed that mothers had short sleep duration (nearly 40% slept <7 hours per night), woke up an average of 2.2 times per night (most commonly due to caregiving needs of children), and had poor sleep quality (mean PSQI global score of 7.9 [SD=4.8]). The sleep problems of children with DDs may influence mothers' sleep.

Abstract
Sleep problems are frequently encountered as presenting complaints in child neurology clinical practice. They can affect the functioning and quality of life of children, particularly those with primary neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders, since coexisting sleep problems can add substantially to neurocognitive and behavioural comorbidities. Additionally, symptoms of some sleep disorders such as parasomnias and narcolepsy can be confused with those of other neurological disorders (eg, epilepsy), posing diagnostic challenges for paediatric neurologists. The understanding of the neurophysiology of sleep disorders such as insomnia, parasomnias, and narcolepsy is still evolving. There is a complex relation between the sleeping brain and its waking function. The interplay among genetic factors, alterations in neurotransmitters, electrophysiological changes, and environmental factors potentially contribute to the genesis of these sleep disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We examined effects of daily rumination and suppression in response to stressors on objective and subjective sleep among mothers. DESIGN Participants were 183 mothers, including chronically stressed mothers of children with an autism spectrum disorder (M-ASD; n = 92) and age-matched mothers of neurotypical children (M-NT; n = 91). In an intensive longitudinal design, participants provided reports of daily rumination and suppression, nightly objective actigraphy-defined sleep and nightly subjective sleep quality for seven consecutive days at baseline, 9 months and 18 months. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Total sleep time, sleep fragmentation, sleep onset latency, and subjective sleep quality. RESULTS Among M-NT with above average depressive symptoms, higher daily rumination was associated with shorter total sleep time. Rumination was associated with more sleep fragmentation among M-NT at the trend level. Rumination was not associated with sleep onset latency among M-NT, or with any sleep outcomes among M-ASD. Suppression was not associated with any sleep outcomes. CONCLUSION We provide novel evidence of the effect of rumination on objectively measured sleep duration among M-NT. Coping was not related to sleep among M-ASD. Given the prevalence of poor sleep among mothers, future work should examine modifiable factors perpetuating sleep disturbance.
