Abstract
Growing challenges of climate change, agricultural sustainability and malnutrition demand climate-resilient nutrient dense crops to mitigate the consequences of climate change while sustaining agricultural productivity and ensuring nutritional security in the Himalayan regions. Glycine soja also known as Himalayan soybean or wild soybean is a wild relative of cultivated soybean (Glycine max) is a valuable underutilized, less explored, and nutritionally rich climate resilient crop offers promising solution to address these challenges. The present systematic review was conducted using bibliometric analysis following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and total 3359 published scientific documents were analyzed. G. soja is a rich source of various nutrients such as protein, carbohydrate, vitamins, micronutrients and several bioactive compounds having potential role in disease prevention. The genetic diversity within G. soja presents considerable opportunities for crop improvement through gene flow with G. max utilizing biotechnological methods or breeding programs. The aim of the present study is to not only highlight the existing knowledge on its nutraceutical, stress resilience and crop improvement potential but it also emphasizes the research gaps including its de novo domestication, in-depth understanding of nutritional and stress resilience properties and the limitations of current biotechnological techniques in addressing agronomic challenges in G. soja cultivation and consumption. Mainstreaming and harnessing the potential of G. soja might help to achieve sustainable food systems, enhancing nutritional security and supporting climate-resilient agriculture in the Himalayan regions.

Abstract
Magnesium plays a vital role in the body. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate dysmagnesemia incidence in hospitalized patients. Medical records of 430 dogs and 310 cats were reviewed, including patients with at least one venous blood gas analysis upon admission. Normal ionized magnesium values were considered 0.5-1 mmol/L for both species, according to the machine range. Data collected included patient demographics, hospitalization details, and outcome. In dogs, hypomagnesemia occurred in 35.5%, hypermagnesemia in 1.1%, and normomagnesemia in 62.2%. No survival differences were observed, but males showed a higher hypomagnesemia incidence. Neurological (51%), neoplastic (50%), and endocrine (42%) diseases were most associated with hypomagnesemia. In cats, hypomagnesemia was found in 6.8%, hypermagnesemia in 8%, and normomagnesemia in 85.2%. Hypermagnesemic cats had 2.3 times higher mortality. Endocrine (28.6%), systemic (13.6%), and urinary (12.9%) disorders had a higher incidence of hypermagnesemia. Dysmagnesemia was not linked to hospitalization length or blood pressure changes. In conclusion, dogs showed a high incidence of hypomagnesemia that was not associated with increased mortality. In contrast, although hypermagnesemia had a low incidence in cats, it was associated with increased mortality.

Abstract
Insects represent a traditional food in different parts of the world, where eating insects is not only related to nutrition, but also results from a variety of sociocultural customs. Insects' nutritional profiles typically vary by species. Nevertheless, in terms of nutrition, edible insects can be a rich source of protein, dietary fiber, healthy fatty acids, and micronutrients, including minerals and vitamins. Insects have a low carbon footprint and require fewer resources in terms of land, water, and food with respect to animal livestock. Interestingly, insects are a source of bioactive compounds with different pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antiobesity, antihypertensive, and antilipidemic. Among the bioactive compounds, polyphenols, chitosan, and protein hydrolysates are the most important ones, with direct activity on ROS quenching and enzymatic inhibition. Glucosidase, DPP-IV, ACE, and lipases are directly inhibited by insects' bioactive peptides. Lipids and tocopherols reduce inflammation and lipid peroxidation by acting on LOX and COX-2 enzymes and on ROS quenching. The insects' nutrient composition, coupled with their easy and economical breeding, is the cause of the growing interest in edible insects. During the last 20 years, the study and development of novel insect-based products increased, with relevant effects on the market. This review focuses on the edible insects currently approved in Europe, namely, Acheta domesticus, Alphitobus diaperinus, Locusta migratoria, and Tenebrio molitor. The nutrient profile and the functional compounds are examined, with an eye on market trends and on the patent applications filed in the last decades.

Abstract
The cyanobacterium, Spirulina sp. is a photosynthetic blue-green alga with essential nutrients, vitamins nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, fatty acids and pigments carotenes; and phycocyanins are the significant components having immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory properties, which are used in food and cosmetics industries. Spirulina sp. can play an important role in human and animal nutrition for potential health benefits due to their phycochemical and pharmaceutical significance. This study highlights antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant, nephroprotective, cardioprotective, anticancer, neuroprotective, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. It highlights anti-anemic, antidiabetic, probiotic, anti-malarial, anti-obesity and weight loss, anti-genotoxicity, anti-thrombic, radioprotective, and detoxifying effects of Spirulina sp. Pharmaceutical studies indicate it may improve heart health and add to the treatment of diabetes, obesity and weight loss. It can play a major role in protecting the environment by recycling wastewater and providing food for humans and animals. Spirulina sp. can supply ingredients for aquaculture and agricultural feeds, pigments, antioxidants, and essential omega-3 oils, among other human health and wellness products. The amino acid of Spirulina is among the greatest qualititavely of any plant, even higher than that of soybean. Furthermore, cyanobacterium Spirulina sp. could be a future antimicrobial drug agent.

Abstract
Background: Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is associated with many common chronic conditions and potentially severe health care outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular risk factors, and diabetes. However, Mg deficiency is underdiagnosed and often underrecognized in the ambulatory health care setting, and nutrition education and training are often limited for health care providers (HCPs). Methods: A clinical guideline for detecting and treating Mg deficiency in the ambulatory care setting was developed. A pilot study was conducted in which HCPs received education on Mg and completed pre-test and post-test questionnaires to assess the intervention efficacy of the guideline. Results: Ten HCPs participated in the pilot study via telephone or face-to-face session. In general, there was a statistically significant increase in Mg knowledge among HCPs, due to the intervention of presentation of the guideline, with a nonsignificant increase in clinical practice application. However, the 1-month follow-up survey results showed that HCPs were likely to incorporate Mg assessment and treatment tools from the guideline in their future practice. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the use of the proposed clinical guideline may increase HCP knowledge and improve the diagnosis and treatment of Mg deficiency. Further use, development, and evaluation of this guideline is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbances have become increasingly prevalent in modern society. Research suggests that a deficiency in magnesium (Mg) may contribute to sleep disturbances. This study aims to investigate the association between daily Mg intake and self-reported sleep duration and sleep disorders using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS The study dataset includes participants from five cycles (2009-2018) of NHANES. The associations between Mg intake and sleep duration are analyzed using weighted logistic regression. RESULTS Baseline characteristics of 21,840 participants were analyzed. Mg intake was independently associated with sleep duration (OR = 1.07, 95% CI (1.01-1.14), p = 0.024). Higher quartiles of Mg intake from food were associated with normal sleep duration. However, Mg intake from food in participants with self-reported sleep disorders did not differ from those without sleep disorders (OR = 0.96, 95% CI (0.90-1.03), p = 0.238). Among 3923 participants with Mg supplementation data, no significant differences were found between the top and bottom 50% Mg supplementary groups regarding sleep duration or disorders. CONCLUSIONS Dietary Mg intake is independently associated with self-reported short sleep duration but not with self-reported sleep disorders. Mg supplementation is not associated with either self-reported sleep duration or sleep disorders.

Abstract
The contemporary approach to nutrition increasingly considers the role of non-nutritive bioactive compounds in modulating the immune system and maintaining health. This article provides up-to-date insight into the immunomodulatory effects of selected bioactive compounds, including micro- and macronutrients, vitamins, as well as other health-promoting substances, such as omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics (including butyric acid and sodium butyrate), coenzyme Q10, lipoic acid, and plant-derived components such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids, polyacetylenes, saponins, carotenoids, and terpenoids. Micro- and macronutrients, such as zinc, selenium, magnesium, and iron, play a pivotal role in regulating the immune response and protecting against oxidative stress. Vitamins, especially vitamins C, D, E, and B, are vital for the optimal functioning of the immune system as they facilitate the production of cytokines, the differentiation of immunological cells, and the neutralization of free radicals, among other functions. Omega-3 fatty acids exhibit strong anti-inflammatory effects and enhance immune cell function. Probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics modulate the intestinal microbiota, thereby promoting the integrity of the intestinal barrier and communication between the microbiota and the immune system. Coenzyme Q10, renowned for its antioxidant attributes, participates in the protection of cells from oxidative stress and promotes energy processes essential for immune function. Sodium butyrate and lipoic acid exhibit anti-inflammatory effects and facilitate the regeneration of the intestinal epithelium, which is crucial for the maintenance of immune homeostasis. This article emphasizes the necessity of an integrative approach to optimal nutrition that considers not only nutritional but also non-nutritional bioactive compounds to provide adequate support for immune function. Without them, the immune system will never function properly, because it has been adapted to this in the course of evolution. The data presented in this article may serve as a foundation for further research into the potential applications of bioactive components in the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with immune dysfunction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To explore the association between magnesium depletion score (MgDS) and the prevalence of kidney stones in the low primary income ratio (PIR). METHOD A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2018. Within the low PIR, people aged ≥20 years with complete information on MgDS and kidney stones questionnaires were enrolled. Multivariable logistic regression and stratified logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between MgDS and the prevalence of kidney stones and the recurrence of kidney stones by confounding factors adjusted. Stratified and interaction analysis was conducted to find whether some factors modified the association. In addition, sensitive analyses were also conducted to observe the stability. The work has been reported in line with the strengthening the reporting of cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies in surgery (STROCSS) criteria (Supplemental Digital Content 1, http://links.lww.com/JS9/C781 ). RESULT A total of 7600 adults were involved in the study, and the individuals were classified into four groups: 0 points for MgDS ( n =3814), 1 point for MgDS ( n =2229), 2 points for MgDS ( n =1020), and ≥3 points for MgDS ( n =537). The multivariable logistic regression suggested that a positive association between MgDS and the prevalence of kidney stones (OR=1.123, 95% CI: 1.019-1.238) in the fully adjusted model. Compared with the lowest group, people with ≥3 points of MgDS had a significant relationship with kidney stones (OR=1.417, 95% CI: 1.013-1.983). No significant association was observed between the recurrence of kidney stones and MgDS. The result of the sensitive analysis showed the robustness of the main analysis. CONCLUSION The prevalence of kidney stones is positively correlated with MgDS, which suggests that maintaining a higher MgDS is accompanied by higher prevalence rates of kidney stones in the low PIR.

Abstract
The gut-brain axis (GBA) plays a pivotal role in human health and wellness by orchestrating complex bidirectional regulation and influencing numerous critical processes within the body. Over the past decade, research has increasingly focused on the GBA in the context of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Beyond its well-documented effects on the GBA-enteric nervous system and vagus nerve dysregulation, and gut microbiota misbalance-IBD also leads to impairments in the metabolic and cellular functions: metabolic dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, cationic transport, and cytoskeleton dysregulation. These systemic effects are currently underexplored in relation to the GBA; however, they are crucial for the nervous system cells' functioning. This review summarizes the studies on the particular mechanisms of metabolic dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, cationic transport, and cytoskeleton impairments in IBD. Understanding the involvement of these processes in the GBA may help find new therapeutic targets and develop systemic approaches to improve the quality of life in IBD patients.

Abstract
The relationship between magnesium deficiency and metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between the magnesium depletion score (MDS) and the risk of MASLD, as well as explore potential underlying mechanisms. Data from 12,024 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018 were analyzed. MDS was calculated based on the use of diuretics and proton pump inhibitors, kidney function, and alcohol consumption. MASLD was defined using the fatty liver index. Logistic regression, restricted cubic spline analysis, and mediation analyses were conducted to evaluate the association between MDS and MASLD and to identify potential mediators. A higher MDS was significantly associated with an increased risk of MASLD (OR = 2.00, 95% CI [1.47, 2.74] for MDS 3 vs. 0). A dose-response relationship between MDS and MASLD risk was observed. Neutrophils, albumin, and white blood cells partially were identified as partial mediators of the association, with albumin exhibiting the highest mediating effect (14.05%). Elevated MDS is significantly associated with an increased risk of MASLD in U.S. adults. Inflammation and albumin may serve as potential mediators of this relationship. These findings underscore the importance of addressing magnesium deficiency in the prevention and management of MASLD.

Abstract
Magnesium (Mg) is a vital element for various metabolic and physiological functions in the human body, including its crucial role in skeletal muscle health. Hypomagnesaemia is frequently reported in many muscle diseases, and it also seems to contribute to the pathogenesis of skeletal muscle impairment in patients with neuromuscular diseases. The aim of this scoping review is to analyze the role of Mg in skeletal muscle, particularly its biological effects on muscle tissue in neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) in terms of biological effects and clinical implications. This scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines. From the 305 studies identified, 20 studies were included: 4 preclinical and 16 clinical studies. Preclinical research has demonstrated that Mg plays a critical role in modulating pathways affecting skeletal muscle homeostasis and oxidative stress in muscles. Clinical studies have shown that Mg supplementation can improve muscle mass, respiratory muscle strength, and exercise recovery and reduce muscle soreness and inflammation in athletes and patients with various conditions. Despite the significant role of Mg in muscle health, there is a lack of research on Mg supplementation in NMDs. Given the potential similarities in pathogenic mechanisms between NMDs and Mg deficiency, further studies on the effects of Mg supplementation in NMDs are warranted. Overall, maintaining optimal Mg levels through dietary intake or supplementation may have important implications for improving muscle health and function, particularly in conditions associated with muscle weakness and atrophy.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. It is usually diagnosed at early levels because of its slow progression. Treatment should consider CKD complications (such as electrolyte level imbalance, vascular calcification, and bone mineral disorders), as well as the development of CKD itself. Large-scale studies have shown that current treatment guidelines are nearly ineffective and fail to achieve treatment goals. Guidelines have not paid as much attention to magnesium (Mg) as the other electrolytes, while Mg has a significant role in the treatment goals of CKD. Hypomagnesemia is the only electrolyte imbalance that is equally prevalent in all stages of CKD. A lower plasma Mg level in each stage of CKD is associated with a higher risk of CKD progression and cardiac events. Magnesium exerts its effects both directly and via other ions. Mg supplementation increases insulin sensitivity while reducing proteinuria and inflammation. It lowers blood pressure and inhibits vascular calcification primarily because of its effects on calcium and phosphate, respectively. Vitamin D supplementation for low-active vitamin D in CKD patients increases vascular calcification and cardiac events, but magnesium supplementation enhances vitamin D levels and activity without increasing the risk of cardiac events. However, careful attention is required due to the potential threats of hypermagnesemia, particularly in advanced CKD stages. Starting magnesium supplementation early in patients' treatment plans will result in fewer side effects and more advantages. More original research is needed to determine its optimal dose and serum levels.

Abstract
Magnesium is vital in a broad spectrum of physiological processes, including enzyme activity, energy production, and neuromuscular function. Despite its crucial role, magnesium disorders - comprising both deficiency (hypomagnesemia) and excess (hypermagnesemia) - are frequently underrecognized and inadequately managed in clinical practice. Magnesium deficiency is widespread, particularly among populations with chronic illnesses, the elderly, and those experiencing malnutrition, often leading to significant neuromuscular, cardiovascular, and metabolic complications. Conversely, hypermagnesemia, though less common, poses serious risks, especially in individuals with impaired renal function or those receiving high doses of magnesium supplements or medications. This review comprehensively examines magnesium disorders, detailing their pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and management strategies. It highlights the essential functions of magnesium in maintaining cellular integrity, cardiovascular health, and bone structure and discusses the global prevalence and risk factors associated with magnesium imbalances. By offering insights into the current understanding of magnesium homeostasis and its disruptions, this review aims to enhance the awareness and treatment of magnesium-related conditions, ultimately improving patient outcomes across diverse clinical settings.

Abstract
Subfertility, a condition marked by a reduced capacity to conceive naturally, affects a significant proportion of couples globally. Nutrition is a fundamental aspect of reproductive health, with various nutrients essential in maintaining optimal reproductive function. This comprehensive review explores the intricate relationship between nutritional deficiencies and subfertility. It examines key micronutrients such as vitamins D, E, C, and B12, as well as minerals such as zinc, iron, selenium, and magnesium, and their impacts on fertility. The review also considers macronutrients and the importance of a balanced diet in supporting reproductive health. Drawing on an extensive body of clinical evidence and studies, this review highlights how deficiencies in these nutrients can lead to hormonal imbalances, impaired gametogenesis, and suboptimal pregnancy outcomes. It discusses the efficacy of nutritional interventions, including dietary supplements and lifestyle modifications, in improving fertility. Furthermore, it addresses the emerging research on personalized nutrition and its potential to enhance reproductive outcomes. The review underscores the necessity for healthcare providers to assess and address the nutritional status of patients with subfertility. It provides practical recommendations for developing nutritional plans, counseling patients, and integrating nutritional interventions into fertility treatments. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Herbal and natural supplements have gained popularity as alternative treatments to insomnia and sleep disorders due to their perceived safety and potential effectiveness. This literature review summarizes the current evidence on the efficacy, safety, and mechanisms of action of commonly used supplements for sleep, including valerian, hops, kava, German chamomile, cherry, tryptophan, theanine, melatonin, magnesium, and zinc. METHODS We conducted literature review of clinical research on herbal and supplements for sleep reported to date. We summarized key findings and reviewed outcomes related to clinical efficacy and side effects. RESULTS Findings suggest that certain supplements, particularly valerian, hops, and melatonin, could be effective in improving sleep quality and reducing insomnia symptoms through modulation of neurotransmitter systems and regulation of sleep-wake cycles. However, the strength of the evidence varies with unestablished optimal dosages, formulations, and treatment durations. Although generally considered safe, these supplements are not without risks, such as rare but serious adverse effects associated with kava and potential interactions with prescription medications. The quality and purity of supplements also vary widely due to a lack of strict regulations. CONCLUSION Healthcare providers should remain informed about the latest research and work closely with patients to develop personalized treatment plans. Herbal and natural supplements may offer promising alternatives or adjunct treatments for insomnia and sleep disorders, but their use should be guided by the best available evidence and individual patient requirements. Larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to establish the efficacy and safety of these supplements for clinical decision-making.

Abstract
Fruit seeds are leftovers from a variety of culinary sectors. They are generally unutilized and contribute greatly to global disposals. These seeds not only possess various nutritional attributes but also have many heath-beneficial properties. One way to make use of these seeds is to extract their bioactive components and create fortified food items. Nowadays, researchers are highly interested in creating innovative functional meals and food components from these unconventional resources. The main objective of this manuscript was to determine the usefulness of seed powder from 70 highly consumed fruits, including Apple, Apricot, Avocado, Banana, Blackberry, Blackcurrant, Blueberry, Cherry, Common plum, Cranberry, Gooseberry, Jackfruit, Jamun, Kiwi, Lemon, Mahua, Mango, Melon, Olive, Orange, and many more have been presented. The nutritional attributes, phytochemical composition, health advantages, nanotechnology applications, and toxicity of these fruit seeds have been fully depicted. This study also goes into in-depth detailing on creating useful food items out of these seeds, such as bakery goods, milk products, cereal-based goods, and meat products. It also identifies enzymes purified from these seeds along with their biochemical applications and any research openings in this area.

Abstract
Magnesium-based biomaterials hold remarkable promise for various clinical applications, offering advantages such as reduced stress-shielding and enhanced bone strengthening and vascular remodeling compared to traditional materials. However, ensuring the quality of preclinical research is crucial for the development of these implants. To achieve implant success, an understanding of the cellular responses post-implantation, proper model selection, and good study design are crucial. There are several challenges to reaching a safe and effective translation of laboratory findings into clinical practice. The utilization of Mg-based biomedical devices eliminates the need for biomaterial removal surgery post-healing and mitigates adverse effects associated with permanent biomaterial implantation. However, the high corrosion rate of Mg-based implants poses challenges such as unexpected degradation, structural failure, hydrogen evolution, alkalization, and cytotoxicity. The biocompatibility and degradability of materials based on magnesium have been studied by many researchers in vitro; however, evaluations addressing the impact of the material in vivo still need to be improved. Several animal models, including rats, rabbits, dogs, and pigs, have been explored to assess the potential of magnesium-based materials. Moreover, strategies such as alloying and coating have been identified to enhance the degradation rate of magnesium-based materials in vivo to transform these challenges into opportunities. This review aims to explore the utilization of Mg implants across various biomedical applications within cellular (in vitro) and animal (in vivo) models.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Seizure-like symptoms are rare in older patients without brain damage. Small bowel obstruction is a common clinical disorder for older patients that can cause electrolyte disturbances and nutritional disorders. Hypomagnesemia is a frequently overlooked electrolyte disorder. Moreover, magnesium deficiency can lead to severe seizure-like symptoms. CASE REPORT An 85-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with weakness and slow movement. Shortly after hospitalization, he experienced incomplete small bowel obstruction; thus, parenteral nutrition and intravenous esomeprazole were administered. When intestinal obstruction was relieved, the patient suddenly experienced seizure-like symptoms three times, and 24-h electroencephalogram did not capture any epileptiform pattern. After excluding other causes, we considered serum magnesium deficiency as a diagnosis. Low serum magnesium levels were related to a shortage of absorption due to small bowel obstruction, excess excretion of renal dysfunction, and the use of proton pump inhibitor. However, the exact mechanism underlying the hypomagnesemia-induced seizure-like activity remained unclear. After adjusting the nutritional support and magnesium supplementation, the patient's serum magnesium level returned to normal, and he was free of seizure-like activity. CONCLUSION Hypomagnesemia is often asymptomatic, but it can lead to severe seizure-like symptoms. It is important to pay attention to the serum magnesium level and nutritional intake in patients with an incomplete small bowel obstruction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypermagnesemia is one of the vital electrolyte disturbances and is associated with such chronic conditions as cardiovascular, endocrinologic, renal diseases, and malignancy. AIM This study evaluates the association between hypermagnesemia and clinical course in hospitalized patients. METHODS This study was conducted at the University of Health Sciences Haseki Training and Research Hospital Internal Medicine Clinic. We evaluated a total of 3850 patients. 2130 patients have met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Those who were discharged with healing were evaluated as having a good prognosis. Patients who died or were transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) were defined as having a poor prognosis. We divided the patients' serum magnesium levels into four quartiles and examined the clinical course/conditions of the patients. RESULTS Of 2130 patients, 1013 (51.9%) were female. The mean age of patients with poor prognoses (69.2 ± 14.9) was higher than those with good prognoses (59.7 ± 19.1). Hypermagnesemia (4th quartile) was detected in 61 (33.9%), and hypomagnesemia (1st quartile) was found in 42 (23.3%) patients out of 180 patients with poor clinical outcomes. It was statistically significant that hypermagnesemia was more common in patients with poor prognoses (p: 0.002). Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was diagnosed in 258 (53.3%) of 484 hypermagnesemia patients. Hypermagnesemia was found to be more common in patients with CKD, which was statistically significant (p: 0.003). CONCLUSIONS Hypermagnesemia is associated with poor prognosis independent of comorbidities. Besides hypomagnesemia, hypermagnesemia should be considered a critical electrolyte imbalance.

Abstract
Self-treatment with vitamin, mineral, and herbal supplements has become increasingly common among patients for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Magnesium, in particular, is popular on social media for the treatment of anxiety and insomnia. Meanwhile, preclinical studies support associations between magnesium status, sleep quality, and symptoms of anxiety. The extent to which these claims are evidence-based is unclear. Therefore, a systematic review was performed to provide an updated examination of the clinical evidence on the use of magnesium for the treatment of the above conditions given the popularity of such supplements among patients and the public at large. A thorough search of the PubMed database was performed and results were systematically reviewed using PRISMA guidelines. The search was limited to anxiety disorders and sleep disorders and included interventional trials only. Exclusion criteria included insufficient (<50 mg/12.5% of recommended daily allowance (RDA)) or unknown magnesium dose, >3 other potentially active compounds present in the formulation, and articles in languages other than English. This query returned 860 articles of which 15 met full inclusion criteria. Eight measured sleep-related outcomes, seven measured anxiety-related outcomes, and one examined both. Sleep quality was measured most frequently using the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Anxiety measures included self-reported measures such as the Hamilton Anxiety Scale. The majority of included studies demonstrated improvement in at least one sleep- or anxiety-related parameter. Five out of eight sleep-related studies reported improvements in sleep parameters, while two studies reported no improvements, and one reported mixed results. Five out of seven studies measuring anxiety-related outcomes reported improvements in self-reported anxiety. Firm conclusions were limited by the heterogeneity of the data and the small number of participants involved in most of the studies. The dosages, formulations, and durations of the magnesium interventions used also differed across studies. Furthermore, some studies included additional, potentially active ingredients, further complicating interpretations. Given the generally positive results across studies, the preponderance of preclinical evidence, and minimal side effects, however, supplemental magnesium is likely useful in the treatment of mild anxiety and insomnia, particularly in those with low magnesium status at baseline. Notably, both negative anxiety trials featured populations with underlying endocrine factors likely contributing to their symptoms (patients with premenstrual symptoms and post-partum women). Nonetheless, larger, randomized clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and to establish the most effective forms and dosages of magnesium for the treatment of insomnia and anxiety disorders.

Abstract
Hearing loss affects some nutrient intake. Disabling hearing loss may exacerbate these issues. We aimed to evaluate nutrient intake and assess deficiencies based on functional hearing status. The study included 6907 participants with information on demographic factors, nutrient intake, weight, height, disease status, and hearing level in the eighth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, conducted from 2019 to 2021. We categorized the participants into 3 groups based on their functional hearing status: bilateral hearing, unilateral hearing, and disabling hearing loss. The disabling hearing loss group showed lower intake of most major nutrients (P < 0.05), dietary fiber (P < 0.001), and most minerals and vitamins (P < 0.05), with some insufficiencies. The unilateral hearing group showed lower intake only for potassium (P = 0.036) compared to the bilateral hearing group and significantly higher intake of hydration (P = 0.039), dietary fiber (P = 0.039), and calcium (P = 0.009) than the disabling hearing loss group. Nutrient insufficiency in the disabling hearing loss group was more prominent in women, and was partially resolved by using hearing aids. Clinicians and nutritionists should consider undernourishment in these patients, and appropriate interventions for nutrition and hearing aids should be recommended.

Abstract
Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated disease affecting the small intestine. The only treatment strategy for CD is the gluten-free diet (GFD). One of the more common mental disorders in CD patients is major depressive disorder (MDD). The influence of GFD on the occurrence of MDD symptoms in patients with CD will be evaluated. This diet often reduces nutritional deficiencies in these patients and also helps to reduce depressive symptoms. Both disease entities are often dominated by the same deficiencies of nutrients such as iron, zinc, selenium, iodine, or B and D vitamins. Deficiencies of particular components in CD can favor MDD and vice versa. Gluten can adversely affect the mental state of patients without CD. Also, intestinal microbiota may play an important role in the described process. This work aims to comprehensively assess the common factors involved in the pathomechanisms of MDD and CD, with particular emphasis on nutrient imbalances. Given the complexity of both disease entities, and the many common links, more research related to improving mental health in these patients and the implementation of a GFD would need to be conducted, but it appears to be a viable pathway to improving the quality of life and health of people struggling with CD and MDD. Therefore, probiotics, micronutrients, macronutrients, and vitamin supplements are recommended to reduce the risk of MDD, given that they may alleviate the symptoms of both these disease entities. In turn, in patients with MDD, it is worth considering testing for CD.

Abstract
Due to the definitive known effect of magnesium on insulin resistance and the fact that insulin resistance is a main etiology in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), it is assumed the use of magnesium supplements can improve insulin resistance, lipid profiles, and glucose and thus may also play a role in improving the clinical condition of patients with PCOS. We aimed to assess the effects of magnesium supplements on anthropometric, clinical, and metabolic parameters in women suffering from PCOS. This triple-blind randomized clinical trial study was conducted on women aged 15-35 years with PCOS. The patients were randomly assigned to receive a magnesium oxide supplement (250 mg/day for 2 months) or a placebo. The study parameters were evaluated and compared between two groups before as well as 2 months and 5 months after the initial assessment. In total, 40 cases (20 in each group) were recruited in the study. A significant reduction in the serum insulin level (P-value = 0.036) and insulin resistance (p-value = 0.032) was observed in the case group. Prescribing magnesium supplements could also lead to lowering total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and fasting blood sugar along with increasing the level of high-density lipoprotein. We could not find any significant difference in anthropometric parameters as well as the mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures before and after intervention between the two groups. Although the rate of oligomenorrhea significantly decreased in the two study groups, it was no different across the two groups before and also after the intervention. The use of magnesium supplements in patients with PCO, regardless of the etiology or progression of the disease, can greatly improve the metabolic status of these patients by improving insulin resistance and modulating the level of lipid profile.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The use of herbal medicine as a part of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine is increasing worldwide. Herbal remedies are used to better different conditions including gastritis. MATERIAL AND METHODS We conducted a prospective randomized control clinical trial on a total sample of 72 patients with gastritis in order to examine the effects of the commercial herbal product Gastro Protect. After 6 weeks of conventional therapy the patients were divided into two groups with 36 patients each. As a continuation of the treatment, Group 1 received conventional therapy + Gastro Protect and Group 2 received conventional therapy + Placebo. We analyzed 14 selected gastrointestinal symptoms, five related to digestive problems, and nine related to stool and bowel problems. For assessing the selected symptoms we used seven point gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (GSRS). RESULTS The Gastro Protect group had a significantly lower GSRS score (better condition) compared to the Placebo group related to all five selected symptoms of digestive problems as: abdominal pain (p=0.0250), hunger pain (p=0.0276), nausea (p=0.0019), heartburn (p=0.00001), and acid reflux (p=0.0017). The Gastro Protect group, also had a significantly lower GSRS score (better condition) compared to the Placebo group related to three out of nine selected bowel symptoms: rumbling (p=0.0022), abdominal distension (p=0.0029), and gas or flatus (p=0.0039). CONCLUSION Gastro protect was effective in treating gastritis and other gastrointestinal symptoms. It was safe for usage and showed almost no side effects. In our study, Gastro Protect reduced the examined gastric symptoms and related examined intestinal symptoms.

Abstract
This comprehensive review explores the potential of magnesium sulfate infusion in mitigating hemodynamic instability during laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeries. Hemodynamic fluctuations during these procedures pose challenges, and magnesium sulfate, with its vasodilatory, antiarrhythmic, and neuroprotective properties, emerges as a promising intervention. The review critically examines existing literature, emphasizing patient selection criteria, dosage protocols, and a comparative analysis with other hemodynamic stabilizers. Safety considerations, including known adverse effects and risk-benefit assessments, and monitoring and management strategies are elucidated. The implications for ENT surgery are discussed, highlighting the potential for enhanced hemodynamic management and individualized approaches. The review concludes with a call for continued research, emphasizing the ongoing evolution of understanding and practice incorporating magnesium sulfate into perioperative care. The insights offered aim to guide clinicians in navigating this dynamic landscape for improved patient outcomes in ENT surgeries.

Abstract
Hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia significantly impact chronic diseases and mortality. Magnesium is an essential nutrient for maintaining critical physiological functions, and magnesium deficiency is often associated with adverse health outcomes. In a cross-sectional study of US adults, we aimed to explore dietary magnesium intake and its association with the prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia in US adults over 20 years of age in NHANES 2007-2018. We obtained data on 24,171 samples of hypertension, 9950 samples of diabetes, and 12,149 samples of hyperlipidemia. We used multivariable logistic regression models adjusted for multiple sociodemographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle factors, with participants subdivided into five groups based on quintiles of daily dietary magnesium. After adjusting for the major lifestyle and dietary variables, an independent and significant inverse relationship between dietary magnesium and hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia was observed. Compared with the lowest quintile of magnesium intake, the prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia was significantly reduced in the highest magnesium quintile. The OR of hypertension in the highest quintile was 0.66 (95% CI: 0.51-0.87; P trend < 0.001), the OR of diabetes was 0.56 (95% CI: 0.39-0.81; P trend < 0.001), and the OR of hyperlipidemia was 0.68 (95% confidence interval: 0.53-0.86; P trend = 0.007). In the subgroup analysis, most of the inverse relationships persisted. Our findings highlight the potential of magnesium-rich foods to prevent hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia in US adults. This article summarizes and discuss recent findings on: 1) A high dietary magnesium intake was associated with a lower prevalence of hypertension; 2) An inverse relationship between dietary magnesium with diabetes hyperlipidemia; 3) Monitoring and management of magnesium was important.

Abstract
Metal-based coordination compounds have very special place in bioinorganic chemistry because of their different structural arrangements and significant application in medicine. Rapid progress in this field increasingly enables the targeted design and synthesis of metal-based pharmaceutical agents that fulfill valuable roles as diagnostic or therapeutic agents. Various coordination compounds have important biological functions, both those initially present in the body (endogenous) and those entering the organisms from the external environment (exogenous): vitamins, drugs, toxic substances, etc. In the therapeutic and diagnostic practice, both the essential for all living organisms and the trace metals are used in metal-containing coordination compounds. In the current review, the most important functional biologically active compounds were classified group by group according to the position of the elements in the periodic table.

Abstract
Aging is characterized by significant physiological changes, with the degree of decline varying significantly among individuals. The preservation of intrinsic capacity over the course of an individual's lifespan is fundamental for healthy aging. Locomotion, which entails the capacity for independent movement, is intricately connected with various dimensions of human life, including cognition, vitality, sensory perception, and psychological well-being. Notably, skeletal muscle functions as a pivotal nexus within this intricate framework. Any perturbation in its functionality can manifest as compromised physical performance and an elevated susceptibility to frailty. Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a central role in approximately 800 biochemical reactions within the human body. Its distinctive physical and chemical attributes render it an indispensable stabilizing factor in the orchestration of diverse cellular reactions and organelle functions, thereby rendering it irreplaceable in processes directly impacting muscle health. This narrative review offers a comprehensive exploration of the pivotal role played by magnesium in maintaining skeletal muscle integrity, emphasizing the critical importance of maintaining optimal magnesium levels for promoting healthy aging.

Abstract
Epidemiology shows that the incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing year by year globally. Proper interventions are highly aspired for diabetics to improve the quality of life and prevent development of chronic complications. Trace elements, also known as microelements, are chemical substances that are present in our body in minute amounts. They are necessitated by the body for growth, development and functional metabolism. For the past few years, trace element nanoparticles have aroused considerable interest as a burgeoning form of nanomedicines in antidiabetic applications. These microelement-based nanomedicines can regulate glucose metabolism in several ways, showing great potential for diabetes management. Starting from the pathophysiology of diabetes, the state-of-the-art of diabetes treatment, the physiological roles of trace elements, various emerging trace element nanoparticles specific for diabetes were comprehensively reviewed in this work. Our findings disclose that trace element nanoparticles can fight against diabetes by lowering blood glucose, promoting insulin secretion, alleviating glucose intolerance, improving insulin sensitivity, ameliorating lipid profile, anti-inflammation and anti-oxidant stress, and other mechanisms. In conclusion, trace element nanoparticles can be applied as nanomedicines or dietary modifiers for effective intervention for diabetes.

Abstract
The multifactorial etiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) includes biological, environmental, genetic, and psychological aspects. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in metallomic studies in psychiatry, aiming to evaluate the role of chosen trace elements in the MDD etiology as well as the progression of symptoms. This narrative review aims to summarize the available literature on the relationship between the concentration of chosen elements in the serum of patients with MDD and the onset and progression of this psychiatric condition. The authors reviewed PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases searching for elements that had been investigated so far and further evaluated them in this paper. Ultimately, 15 elements were evaluated, namely, zinc, magnesium, selenium, iron, copper, aluminium, cadmium, lead, mercury, arsenic, calcium, manganese, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus. The association between metallomic studies and psychiatry has been developing dynamically recently. According to the results of current research, metallomics might act as a potential screening tool for patients with MDD while at the same time providing an assessment of the severity of symptoms. Either deficiencies or excessive amounts of chosen elements might be associated with the progression of depressive symptoms or even the onset of the disease among people predisposed to MDD.

Abstract
Dysphagia is a condition that affects the ability to chew and swallow food and beverages, having a major impact on people's health and wellbeing. This work developed gel systems with a customized texture suitable for intake by dysphagic people using 3D printing and milk. Gels were developed using skim powdered milk, cassava starch (native and modified by the Dry Heating Treatment (DHT)), and different concentrations of kappa-carrageenan (ĸC). The gels were evaluated in relation to the starch modification process and concentration of gelling agents, 3D printing performance, and suitability for dysphagic people (following both the standard fork test described by the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI), and also using a new device coupled to a texture analyzer). Moreover, the best formulations were evaluated for mineral bioaccessibility through simulated gastrointestinal digestion based on INFOGEST 2.0 standardized method. The results showed that ĸC had a dominant effect compared to the DHT-modified starch on gel texture, 3D printing performance, and fork tests. The gels obtained by molding or 3D printing resulted in different behaviors during the fork test, which was associated with the gel extrusion process that breaks down their initial structure. The strategies applied to tailor the texture of the milk did not affect the mineral bioaccessibility, which was kept high (>80%).

Abstract
Introduction One of the world's most pressing problems right now is childhood obesity. After potassium, magnesium (Mg) is the second most prevalent intracellular cation and the fourth most prevalent mineral in the human body. Numerous symptoms of magnesium insufficiency can include hypocalcemia, hypokalemia, as well as cardiac and neurological symptoms. Additionally, chronically low Mg levels have been associated with a number of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and osteoporosis. Objectives This study aimed to compare the magnesium (Mg) level between normal-weight and obese children in a tertiary center in Saudi Arabia over the past seven years and evaluate the vitamin D and phosphorus between the two groups as a secondary objective. Methods This is a single-center, case-control study conducted on patients followed up in our center from January 2016 to December 2022. All pediatric patients were between two and 14 years of age. They were divided into two groups: one with children whose body mass index (BMI) was over the 85th percentile and the other with children whose BMI was between the 3rd and 85th percentiles. Results Mean serum Mg levels showed no significant correlation between the obese group (0.82 mg/dl) and the normal-weight group (0.83 mg/dl). However, vitamin D and phosphorus demonstrate a significant difference between the two groups. The obese group revealed a vitamin D of 1.6±0.24 and phosphorus of 4.2±0.46. On the other hand, the normal group had a vitamin D of 44.0±28.2 and phosphorus of 1.5±0.26. Conclusion There was a negative correlation between Mg levels and weight in pediatric patients. However, a positive relationship was observed between the Mg intake and Mg levels. Moreover, sodium, phosphorus, and vitamin D levels showed significant differences.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the magnesium-binding capacity of Cyberlindnera jadinii yeast in media prepared from potato wastewater and glycerol (after biodiesel production), supplemented with magnesium salt. The research was carried out in two stages. In the first, the ability to binding magnesium by yeast in media supplemented with various doses of this element was tested. In the second stage, after selecting the appropriate dose of magnesium, the culture was carried out in a bioreactor. The composition of the yeast biomass was also analysed in terms of lipids and protein content and amino acid composition. Studies have shown that this type of medium can be used as a culture medium for the growth of C. jadinii yeast. In the first stage of the study, the most magnesium (8.97 mg/gd.m.) was bound by yeast cells after 48 h of cultivation in a medium supplemented with the addition of magnesium at a dose of 2 g/L. In the second stage of the research, the highest magnesium content in the biomass (7.9 mg/gd.m.) was noted after 24 h of cultivation in the same medium. The lipid and protein contents in the biomass obtained after 24 h of cultivation in the bioreactor were 6.35 and 43.73%, respectively. The main fatty acids present in the yeast lipids were oleic acid (59.4%) and linoleic acid (8.6%). Analysis of the amino acid profile of the proteins showed the highest proportions were glutamic acid (13.7%) and aspartic acid (11%).

Abstract
Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder affecting <1/1,000,000 people. It is caused by mutations in the CLDN16 (FHHNC Type 1) or CLDN19 (FHHNC Type 2) genes, which are located on Chromosomes 3q27 and 1p34.2, respectively. There are no drug therapies for this condition. Although magnesium salts represent an important class of compounds and exhibit various therapeutic actions as a supplement for magnesium deficiency in FHHNC, various formulations on the market have different bioavailability. We report the case of a patient with FHNNC first treated, in our Pediatric Institute, with high doses of magnesium pidolate and magnesium and potassium citrate. The patient began to neglect this therapy after experiencing frequent daily episodes of diarrhoea. Our pharmacy received a request for an alternative magnesium supplement that would better comply by ensuring a good magnesium intake which will result in adequate blood magnesium levels. In response, we developed a galenic compound in the form of effervescent magnesium. Here, we report on the promise of this formulation not only for better compliance than pidolate, but also for better bioavailability.

Abstract
There is an urgent need to develop biodegradable implants that can degrade once they have fulfilled their function. Commercially pure magnesium (Mg) and its alloys have the potential to surpass traditional orthopedic implants due to their good biocompatibility and mechanical properties, and most critically, biodegradability. The present work focuses on the synthesis and characterization (microstructural, antibacterial, surface, and biological properties) of poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA)/henna (Lawsonia inermis)/Cu-doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (Cu-MBGNs) composite coatings deposited via electrophoretic deposition (EPD) on Mg substrates. PLGA/henna/Cu-MBGNs composite coatings were robustly deposited on Mg substrates using EPD, and their adhesive strength, bioactivity, antibacterial activity, corrosion resistance, and biodegradability were thoroughly investigated. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies confirmed the uniformity of the coatings' morphology and the presence of functional groups that were attributable to PLGA, henna, and Cu-MBGNs, respectively. The composites exhibited good hydrophilicity with an average roughness of 2.6 μm, indicating desirable properties for bone forming cell attachment, proliferation, and growth. Crosshatch and bend tests confirmed that the adhesion of the coatings to Mg substrates and their deformability were adequate. Electrochemical Tafel polarization tests revealed that the composite coating adjusted the degradation rate of Mg substrate in a human physiological environment. Incorporating henna into PLGA/Cu-MBGNs composite coatings resulted in antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The coatings stimulated the proliferation and growth of osteosarcoma MG-63 cells during the initial incubation period of 48 h (determined by the WST-8 assay).

Abstract
The objective of the study was to examine differences in nutrient intake between consumers and non-consumers of red meat and to assess nutritional adequacy of consumers relative to Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) in Canada. Matching estimators were used to identify differences in nutrient intake between the two groups. Statistically significant differences were observed in nutrient intake between red meat consumers and non-consumers, including lower daily intake of protein, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin D, and zinc and a higher daily intake of dietary fiber, folate, and magnesium among Canadians who did not consume red meat. Further, red meat consumers and non-consumers had nutrient intakes below RDA for dietary energy, fiber, and calcium. While individuals who did not consume red meat were at increased risk of calcium, vitamin D, energy, and potassium inadequacy, those who consumed red meat were at increased risk of dietary fiber, vitamin A, and magnesium inadequacy.

Abstract
Ambelania acida is native to the Amazon region, with few published studies of its fruits. We examined the proximate composition of its fruits, including minerals, fatty acids, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as well as its antioxidant capacity. The protein contents (2.61%) of the pulp and seeds (13.6%) were higher than observed in other taxa of the family or in other tropical fruits. Peel and pulp showed high contents of potassium, calcium, and magnesium, and the potassium content in the pulp was 1125 mg/100 g. The peel had higher contents of total phenolics, tannins, and ortho-diphenols than the pulp, as well as better antioxidant activity as evidenced by 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), and Fe2+ chelating activity assays. GC-MS analyses identified 42 VOCs in the peel and pulp, with more than 90% being classified as terpenes. Eleven types of fatty acids were identified in the lipid fractions of the peel, pulp, and seeds. Linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid for humans, was the principal fatty acid in the edible portion of the fruit, therefore, evidencing its nutritionally significant profile for the fruits when considering the relationship among polyunsaturated, saturated, and monounsaturated fatty acids. The information gathered here indicates that this native fruit is a healthy food source and its cultivation and consumption should be stimulated.

Total Usual Nutrient Intakes and Nutritional Status of United Arab Emirates Children (4 Years-12.9 Years): Findings from the Kids Nutrition and Health Survey (KNHS) 2021. Abstract
This study aims at investigating the anthropometric status and food consumption patterns of children in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and assessing their adherence to nutrient and dietary recommendations. It is a population-based cross-sectional survey of 690 children (4-12.9 years), from 3 major Emirates. Socio-demographic and anthropometric characteristics were collected. Dietary intakes were assessed using the 24-hour recall approach. Of the total sample, 4% were stunted, 8% were wasted and 28% were overweight/obese. A third of participating children consumed above the Estimated Energy Requirement, while the majority's intakes carbohydrate, total fat, and protein were within the recommendations; whereas over 70% and 90% of participants consumed above the WHO daily limits of free sugars and saturated fats, respectively. Inadequate intakes of linoleic acid (36% of children), alpha-linolenic acid (91%) and dietary fiber (100%) were observed. All children failed to meet the recommendation for vitamin D and considerable proportions had inadequate intakes of vitamin A, calcium, zinc, folate, and magnesium. Compared with the American Heart Association/American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations, low dietary adherence was noted for fruits (9%), vegetables (4%), and milk/dairy (14%). These findings may be used in the development of nutritional policies aimed at improving the diets of children in the UAE.

Abstract
Introduction Obesity and diabetes are public health concerns worldwide, but few studies have examined the habitual intake of minerals on body composition in people with prediabetes. Methods In this prospective cross-sectional study, 155 Chinese subjects with IGT [median age: 59 (53-62) years, 58% female] had an assessment of body composition including body fat percentage, oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT), Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) and 3-day food records from nutritional programme analysis. Results Dietary intake of minerals was negatively correlated with body fat. People with obesity had the lowest daily consumption of iron median (IQR) 10.3 (6.9-13.3) mg, magnesium 224 (181-282) mg, and potassium 1973 (1563-2,357) mg when compared to overweight [10.5 (8.0-14.5) mg, 273 (221-335) mg, and 2,204 (1720-2,650) mg] and normal weight individuals [13.2 (10.0-18.6) mg, 313 (243-368) mg, and 2,295 (1833-3,037) mg] (p = 0.008, <0.0001, and 0.013 respectively). Amongst targeted minerals, higher dietary magnesium and potassium intake remained significantly associated with lower body fat after the adjustment of age, gender, macronutrients, fibre, and physical activity. Conclusion Dietary magnesium and potassium intake may be associated with lower body fat in people with impaired glucose tolerance. Inadequate dietary mineral intake may play contribute to obesity and metabolic disorders independent of macronutrients and fibre consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bee pollen, known as a natural super-food with valuable nutritional ingredients, is regarded as a good indicator of ecotoxic substances, such as potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Therefore, this study aims to examine the concentrations of selected PTEs (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sn, Sr, V, Zn) in bee pollen purchased from online markets in Turkey and perform a health risk assessment to identify the potential risk to consumers. METHODS The quantitative analyses were conducted by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). RESULTS The mean values of essential PTEs in decreasing content order were Mg > Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > Ni > Se > Cr > Mo >Co = V. Regarding the results of the study, daily consumption (40 g for adult or 20 g for children) of commercial bee pollen can recompense 20-35 % of daily Cu, Mn, Se requirements for children, adults, pregnant, and breastfeeding women. The decreasing content order of non-essential elements was Al > Sn > Sr > Ba > Pb > As. Cadmium and Hg concentrations were below the detection limits in all the samples. In terms of food and public health; detection of the PTEs concentrations is necessary to assess the quality and safety of bee pollen before consumption. According to the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk assessments; commercial pollen consumption does not pose a health risk to either children or adults for the PTEs monitored in this study. CONCLUSION We conclude that bee pollen is an ideal indicator for the monitoring of environmental pollution of PTEs and also a valuable source of essential elements. This study highlights the need to develop standards that regulate acceptable concentrations of PTEs.

Abstract
Background and Aims Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the common endocrine disorders in women, which causes numerous symptoms in women. The relationship of many micronutrients with this syndrome has been investigated. This study was conducted to examine the effects of magnesium supplementation on hyperandrogenism, hirsutism, and sleep quality in women with PCOS. Methods In this parallel randomized clinical trial, 64 women with PCOS were randomly assigned to the magnesium group (n = 32) or placebo group (n = 32) for 10 weeks. Patients in the magnesium group received one 250 mg magnesium oxide tablet, per day. Hyperandrogenism, hirsutism, and sleep quality were measured at the beginning and end of the study. This randomized clinical trial was registered at https://www.IRCT.ir (IRCT20130903014551N8). Results Magnesium supplementation had no significant effect on hyperandrogenism (p = 0.51 for dehydroepiandrosterone sulfates, p = 0.27 for testosterone), hirsutism (p = 0.23), and sleep quality (p = 0.85) compared with placebo. Conclusions The present study showed that a single dose of magnesium supplementation elicited no beneficial effects on the mentioned symptoms in polycystic women. It is possible that the positive effects of magnesium observed in the former studies were due to the synergistic effects of other vitamins or minerals. More studies are needed in this area.

Abstract
Magnesium is an essential cation present in the body that participates in the regulation of various vital body functions. Maintaining normal level of magnesium is essential for proper brain functions by regulating the activities of numerous neurotransmitters and their receptors. Various studies have been reported that magnesium level is found to be declined in both neurological and psychiatric diseases. Declined magnesium level in the brain initiates various cumbersome effects like excitotoxicity, altered blood-brain permeability, oxidative stress, and inflammation, which may further worsen the disease condition. Shreds of evidence from the experimental and clinical studies proved that exogenous administration of magnesium is useful for correcting disease-induced alterations in the brain. But one of the major limiting factors in the use of magnesium for treatment purposes is its poor blood-brain barrier permeability. Various approaches like the administration of its organic salts as pidolate and threonate forms, and the combination with polyethylene glycol or mannitol have been tried to improve its permeability to make magnesium as a suitable drug for different neurological disorders. These results have shown their experimental efficacy in diseased animal models, but studies regarding the safety and efficacy in human subjects are currently underway. We present a comprehensive review on the role of magnesium in the maintenance of normal functioning of the brain and various approaches for improving its BBB permeability.

Abstract
Heavy metal-induced toxicity contributes to the progression of various metabolic disorders and possible mechanisms involved in disease progression are not well established. In this study, the correlation of heavy metal exposure and hypertension have been demonstrated. The results showed that in hypertensive subjects, the lipid profiles (triglycerides, LDL-C, HDL-C, and total cholesterol) and cardiac markers (CK-MB and LDH) were altered abruptly. As a consequence of heavy- induced oxidative stress, the oxidants (TBARS and protein carbonyls) and antioxidants (SOD, GSH, and TAC) were significantly increased and decreased, respectively in hypertension subjects. The concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, and As) exceeded the permissible limits in hypertensive subjects. The Nrf-2 genotyping indicated that heavy metals may induce mutations at molecular level. The results of correlation analysis revealed that the heavy metals interact with cellular components and interfere with metabolic processes which then results in disturbed lipid profile, enhanced oxidative stress, and reduced antioxidant status. The current study systematically estimated the association of hair and nail heavy metal concentrations with hypertension among the population residing in the Malwa region of Punjab. The proposed study highlighted that heavy metals act as a silent risk factor in the hypertension progression in the population of Malwa region. Future studies are required to confirm current findings and further scrutinize the effect of heavy metals exposure in early adulthood, early, and late mid-life to develop metabolic complications such as hypertension.

Abstract
Hypomagnesemia is tenfold more common in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D), compared to the healthy population. Factors that are involved in this high prevalence are low Mg2+ intake, gut microbiome composition, medication use and presumably genetics. Hypomagnesemia is associated with insulin resistance, which subsequently increases the risk to develop T2D or deteriorates glycaemic control in existing diabetes. Mg2+ supplementation decreases T2D associated features like dyslipidaemia and inflammation; which are important risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Epidemiological studies have shown an inverse association between serum Mg2+ and the risk to develop heart failure (HF), atrial fibrillation (AF) and microvascular disease in T2D. The potential protective effect of Mg2+ on HF and AF may be explained by reduced oxidative stress, fibrosis and electrical remodeling in the heart. In microvascular disease, Mg2+ reduces the detrimental effects of hyperglycemia and improves endothelial dysfunction. Though, clinical studies assessing the effect of long-term Mg2+ supplementation on CVD incidents are lacking and gaps remain on how Mg2+ may reduce CVD risk in T2D. Despite the high prevalence of hypomagnesemia in people with T2D, routine screening of Mg2+ deficiency to provide Mg2+ supplementation when needed is not implemented in clinical care as sufficient clinical evidence is lacking. In conclusion, hypomagnesemia is common in people with T2D and is both involved as cause, probably through molecular mechanisms leading to insulin resistance, and consequence and is prospectively associated with development of HF, AF and microvascular complications. Whether long-term supplementation of Mg2+ is beneficial, however, remains to be determined.

Abstract
Change in the levels of trace elements has been linked with PCOS pathogenesis by various studies, whereas some had reported no such association. Therefore, in order to evaluate association of eleven trace element (Cu, Zn, Cr, Cd, Se, Mn, Fe, Mg, Co, Ni and Pb) serum concentration with PCOS pathogenesis, current systematic review and meta-analysis has been carried out. Literature search was conducted using PubMed, Central Cochrane Library, Google Scholar and Science Direct databases with appropriate keywords. Studies published upto 3rd of September were evaluated for eligibility with suitable inclusion and exclusion criteria. Only case-control studies examining the association of serum trace element concentrations between PCOS cases and controls were selected. Present meta-analysis identified 32 articles with 2317 PCOS and 1898 controls. The serum Cu (MD = 15.40; 95% CI = 4.32 to 26.48; p = 0.006), Co (MD = 0.01; 95% CI = 0.01 to 0.02; p = 0.000), Cr (MD = 0.04; 95% CI = 0.00 to 0.07; p = 0.03) and Fe (MD = 12.98; 95% CI = 5.87-20.09; p = 0.0003) concentration is significantly higher, while lower concentration has been observed for Se (MD = - 0.99; 95% CI = - 1.31 to - 0.67; p = 0.000) and Mg (MD = - 223.41; 95% CI = - 391.60 to - 55.23; p = 0.009) among women with PCOS in comparison with the healthy group. Concentration of other elements which were analysed is not significantly related to PCOS. In short, PCOS women has higher serum concentrations of Cu, Co, Cr and Fe and lower concentrations of Se and Mg. Studies with sub-population of obese, non-obese and with and without insulin resistance are important to understand the pathomechanism of these elements in the syndrome.

Abstract
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor disorder characterized by an urgent need to move the legs, due to the presence of a discomfort sensation in the lower limbs, especially at rest. Generally, it relieves with movement. There are several studies that argue the existence of an association between this syndrome and pregnancy. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms of this disorder in pregnancy are misunderstood. The objective of this narrative review is to identify and discuss some possible etiologies of RLS in pregnancy. A literature search was performed in the PubMed and ResearchGate databases by using the following search strategies: "restless legs syndrome", "restless legs syndrome in pregnancy", "pregnancy and vitamin D deficiency" and "pregnancy and zinc". The publications were initially sorted through their title. After the initial process, inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. The included articles were sorted by authors, year, journal of publication, type of study, and organized by chronological order of publication. Among the main findings, hormonal changes, iron metabolism, vitamin D deficiency, genetic factors, zinc and magnesium fluctuations have been some of the hypotheses supporting the development or worsening of this disorder in pregnancy. Dopamine also appears to be correlated with hormonal changes, iron metabolism, ferritin, folic acid and vitamin D deficiency. In conclusion, there are several hypotheses trying to link restless legs syndrome with pregnancy. The most covered were hormonal fluctuations and iron metabolism. However, this thematic is still highly discussed, creating the need for additional and thorough research.
