Abstract
This study aimed to develop an automatic diagnostic scheme for bruxism, a sleep-related disorder characterized by teeth grinding and clenching. The aim was to improve on existing methods, which have been proven to be inefficient and challenging. We utilized a novel hybrid machine learning classifier, facilitated by the Weka tool, to diagnose bruxism from biological signals. The study processed and examined these biological signals by calculating the power spectral density. Data were categorized into normal or bruxism categories based on the EEG channel (C4-A1), and the sleeping phases were classified into wake (w) and rapid eye movement (REM) stages using the ECG channel (ECG1-ECG2). The classification resulted in a maximum specificity of 93% and an accuracy of 95% for the EEG-based diagnosis. The ECG-based classification yielded a supreme specificity of 87% and an accuracy of 96%. Furthermore, combining these phases using the EMG channel (EMG1-EMG2) achieved the highest specificity of 95% and accuracy of 98%. The ensemble Weka tool combined all three physiological signals EMG, ECG, and EEG, to classify the sleep stages and subjects. This integration increased the specificity and accuracy to 97% and 99%, respectively. This indicates that a more precise bruxism diagnosis can be obtained by including all three biological signals. The proposed method significantly improves bruxism diagnosis accuracy, potentially enhancing automatic home monitoring systems for this disorder. Future studies may expand this work by applying it to patients for practical use.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This cross-sectional school-based study explored the influence of malocclusion on temporomandibular disorders (TMD) pain complaints, and whether this association would be mediated by sleep bruxism in a representative sample of 7- to 8-year-old children. METHODS Path analysis estimated direct, indirect, and total effects of occlusal features on sleep bruxism and TMD pain in 7- to 8-year-old children. Occlusal features were assessed with Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), orofacial pain complaints using the TMD pain screener, possible sleep bruxism based on self-reports, and probable sleep bruxism based on self-reports combined with clinical findings. Structural equation modeling analyzed data with confounding factors. RESULTS From 580 participants, possible sleep bruxism was observed in 136 children (31.5%), probable sleep bruxism in 30 children (6.7%), and TMD pain complaints in 78 children (13.8%). Malocclusion had no direct effect on either possible sleep bruxism [standardized coefficient (SC) 0.000; p = 0.992], or TMD pain complaints (SC - 0.01; p = 0.740). When probable sleep bruxism was set as the mediator of interest, malocclusion did not directly affect probable sleep bruxism (SC 0.01; p = 0.766), nor TMD pain complaints (SC - 0.02; p = 0.515). A direct effect of probable sleep bruxism on TMD pain complaints was observed with an SC of 0.60 (p < 0.001). However, in neither case, malocclusion indirectly affected TMD pain complaints via bruxism. CONCLUSION Malocclusion in 7- to 8-year-old children did not directly influence possible or probable sleep bruxism or TMD pain complaints. Instead, probable sleep bruxism was strongly associated with TMD pain complaints. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The impact of occlusal features on TMD pain complaints and bruxism has been a long-standing controversy in dentistry. However, the scientific literature linking this association may be inconsistent, mainly due to biased sample selection methods with inadequate consideration of confounders. Further research should try to identify additional risk factors for TMD pain in addition to probable sleep bruxism in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of probable sleep bruxism (SB) in children aged 7-8 years and its association with sleep pattern and the time spent using devices with a screen. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with children from Pelotas, Brazil (n = 556). Parents/caregivers were interviewed and provided demographic/socioeconomic information, children's daily screen time, nighttime tooth grinding or clenching, sleep duration and answered the Biological Rhythms Interview for Assessment in Neuropsychiatry for Kids (BRIAN-K-sleep domain). Probable SB was determined based on a positive clinical inspection with/without a positive parental/caregiver's reports of tooth clenching or grinding. Hierarchical Poisson regression was performed. RESULTS The prevalence of probable SB was 15.83% (n = 88). There was no difference in the probable SB prevalence according to the daily screen time (p = 0.744), and low family socioeconomic status was associated with higher SB prevalence (Prevalence Ratio [PR] = 1.95; 95% Confidence Interval [95% CI]: 1.21-3.17; p = 0.006). Higher scores in the sleep domain of the BRIAN-K scale were associated with probable SB [PR = 1.07; 95% CI: 1.01-1.30; p = 0.013]. CONCLUSIONS Difficulties in maintaining sleep and low family socioeconomic status were associated with probable SB in schoolchildren, while screen time spent using devices with a screen was not associated.

Abstract
In the present study are depicted valuable observations for practitioners, obtained from an in vitro study which aims to evaluate the compressive strength of occlusal veneers fabricated from 3 type of restorative materials, before and after 1 month of acidic artificial saliva exposure (pH = 2.939). In this context, 90 extracted human molars were prepared to receive computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) occlusal veneers. The restorative materials considered in this study were: Cerasmart; Straumann Nice and Tetric CAD. The occlusal veneers were designed, milled and cemented with an adhesive dual-cure resin cement. From all the extracted human molars, only sixty specimens were immersed in acidic artificial saliva, for 1 month, at 37 °C ± 1 °C and part of this specimens were also thermo-cycled, between 5 and 55 °C ± 2 °C, before compressive strength test. The results showed a lower compressive strength for both the samples exposed to acidic artificial saliva as well as for the samples exposed to acidic artificial saliva and thermo-cycled. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that after compressive strength, all the specimens non-exposed to acidic artificial saliva, present extensive cracks formation at the surface of the restorations, and after exposure to acidic artificial saliva for 1 month, the surface damage was characterized by longitudinal and profound fractures of the restoration, as well as the fracture of the tooth structure. Between CAD/CAM materials tested, nanoceramic resin shows more favorable fracture patterns, both before and after acidic artificial saliva exposure.

Abstract
AIM To analyse the possible association between decreased physical and social activity and an increase in the use of mobile devices, internet, and social networks with increased anxiety and the appearance of oral parafunctions and bruxism for adolescents before and during COVID-19. DESIGN A total of 213 adolescents attended private clinics at two different times: before lockdown (T0) and after completion of total lockdown (T1). In T0 and T1, a clinical examination was carried out to assess dental wear (IA) and only in T1 were they given the self-report questionnaire which focuses on the periods before and during lockdown (self-reported bruxism, state anxiety, mobile phone and internet, social network use, physical and social activity, and questions on parafunctions). RESULTS There were a decrease in physical activity at T0-T1 and an increase in social media use, internet, state anxiety, and clinical and self-reported bruxism at T0-T1. There was a positive correlation between increased self-reported bruxism, increased social media use, mobile device use, and state anxiety. CONCLUSIONS There has been a change in adolescent lifestyle during lockdown with an increase in the prevalence of oral parafunctions and bruxism. In particular, the increase in the use of social networks at night and also in anxiety levels during lockdown were associated with of the increase in self-reported bruxism.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effect of masseter muscle activity during wakefulness and sleep on tooth wear. METHODS Sixteen participants with no or mild tooth wear (NMTW group) and sixteen participants with moderate-to-severe tooth wear (MSTW group) were enrolled. The severity of tooth wear was evaluated using the occlusal and incisal indices of the tooth wear index. Surface electromyography was performed to record the electrical activity of the left masseter muscle during wakefulness and sleep. Electromyographic activity was detected using an electromyographic threshold of 5% and 20% of maximal voluntary clenching (MVC). The total duration of electromyographic activity and bruxism episodes were calculated. RESULTS The mean ages of the NMTW and MSTW groups were 71.75 ± 7.61 years and 71.69 ± 7.49 years, respectively. The mean cumulative duration of electromyographic activity during wakefulness using a threshold of >5% MVC was 6.44 ± 4.52 min/h and 13.62 ± 10.08 min/h for the NMTW and MSTW groups, respectively (p=0.048). The mean total durations of electromyographic activity during wakefulness and sleep using a threshold of >20% MVC were 1.08 ± 1.70 min/h and 1.05 ± 3.02 min/h, respectively, in the NMTW group and 4.78 ± 6.37 min/h and 1.61 ± 1.79 min/h, respectively, in the MSTW group (p=0.048 and p=0.003, respectively). CONCLUSION These results suggest that masseter electromyographic activity during wakefulness and sleep may be related to the severity of tooth wear.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the role of anxiety/depression and occlusal factors in bruxism using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and T-Scan III respectively. Methods The present case control study was comprising of a group of thirty patients with bruxism (Group Br) and 30 healthy individuals as control group (Group NBr). Subjects were selected from outdoor patients visiting the dental unit with the chief complaint of wearing off/sensitivity of all the teeth due to habitual grinding. The cases were selected by using the diagnostic criteria as given by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Further based on similarities of age and gender, controls were selected. Tooth wear index was recorded using an index given by Ekfeldt et al. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire was administered to both the groups to evaluate anxiety and depression. Recording of occlusal parameters in both the groups was done digitally by using T-Scan III. Statistical analysis was done by using student's t-test, chi square test and Mann Whitney U test. Results Group Br had significantly greater mean tooth wear index (22.24 ± 11.5) than group NBr (5.17 ± 3.30). Group Br had significantly higher anxiety (9.03 + 1.87/7.17 + 1.82) and depression scores (8 + 1.93/6.17 + 1.23) as compared to NBr. The disclusion time of group Br was 0.652 ± 0.749 and that of group NBr was 0.247 ± 0.289 (p = 0.008). Conclusions Subjects with higher level of anxiety, depression and increased disclusion time may have greater predilection towards suffering from bruxism (p < 0.05).

Abstract
PURPOSE To systematically review studies on various materials and methods used for wear testing of occlusal devices and their antagonists in vitro and in vivo. METHODS An electronic search in OVID, Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus was conducted using the following terms (MeSH words) with any synonyms and closed terms: "Splint*" OR "occlusal splint*" OR "night guard" OR "occlusal device" OR "occlusal devices" OR "deprogrammer" OR "bite splint" OR "bite plane" OR "orthotic appliance*" OR "orthotic devices" AND "wear" OR "two-body wear" OR "three-body wear" OR "tooth wear" OR "wear measurement*" OR "wear behaviour" OR "wear behavior" OR "abrasion" AND "Polymethyl Methacrylate" OR "PMMA" OR "acrylic resin*" OR "dental material*" OR "dental enamel" OR "CAD" OR "CAM" OR "PEEK" OR "material* testing". Database search was limited to English-language publications and published between 2001 and 1st of September 2021. A further hand search was done to ensure all materials were captured. RESULTS After the removal of duplicates, 115 studies were identified, and 11 were chosen for review. Studies showed that the lowest volumetric loss was observed in PEEK occlusal device materials, whereas heat-cure, CAD-milled, and 3D printed occlusal device materials had no significant difference in wear. Vacuum-formed materials showed the highest wear among all groups. Testing parameters were found to be inconsistent across all studies. CONCLUSION There is a need for standardization of in vitro and in vivo wear measurement and testing protocols as this study revealed a wide variety of testing protocols which potentially could influence the outcome. Polishing procedures are required for the material. Limited studies are available on 3D printed occlusal device materials and would therefore require further investigation, especially on printing build angles and settings. Further clinical studies would be advantageous to provide guidance on the selection of the best occlusal device material that would last the longest without remake.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinically, sleep bruxism is considered to be associated with the presence of tooth wear, but strong evidence is still lacking. OBJECTIVE To examine whether an association exists between polysomnographic parameters, recorded from patients with possible sleep bruxism and tooth wear. METHODS Sixty-three possible sleep bruxers (19 males and 44 females, mean ± SD age = 38.5 ± 11.4 years) were recruited among patients attending the Clinic for orofacial pain and dysfunction of the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). The incisal/occlusal tooth wear was recorded for each tooth clinically, using a 5-point ordinal scale. Subsequently, all patients underwent an one-night ambulatory polysomnographic recording, during which the number of bruxism episodes per hour of sleep (Epi/h), the number of bruxism bursts per hour of sleep (Bur/h), and the bruxism time index (BTI) were recorded and analysed. Logistic regression analysis was performed using the presence of tooth wear as the dependent variable, the polysomnographic recordings as independent variables, and corrected for age and gender. The Bur/h and BTI were removed from the analyses due to collinearity with the Epi/h. Additionally, the polysomnographic recordings were also tested for possible association with self-reported grinding of the teeth during sleep. RESULTS No significant correlation was found between tooth wear and Epi/h (P = 0.381). In addition, the presence of tooth wear was not associated with self-reported parafunctions. CONCLUSION Clinically measured tooth wear and self-reported parafunction seem not be related to the polysomnographic parameters of possible sleep bruxism.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to 1) determine if continuous eruption occurs in the maxillary teeth, 2) assess the magnitude of the continuous eruption, and 3) evaluate the effects of continuous eruption on the different periodontal parameters by using data from the population-based cohort of the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP). The jaw casts of 140 participants from the baseline (SHIP-0) and 16-y follow-up (SHIP-3) were digitized as 3-dimensional models. Robust reference points were set to match the tooth eruption stage at SHIP-0 and SHIP-3. Reference points were set on the occlusal surface of the contralateral premolar and molar teeth, the palatal fossa of an incisor, and the rugae of the hard palate. Reference points were combined to represent 3 virtual occlusal planes. Continuous eruption was measured as the mean height difference between the 3 planes and rugae fix points at SHIP-0 and SHIP-3. Probing depth, clinical attachment levels, gingiva above the cementoenamel junction (gingival height), and number of missing teeth were clinically assessed in the maxilla. Changes in periodontal variables were regressed onto changes in continuous eruption after adjustment for age, sex, number of filled teeth, and education or tooth wear. Continuous tooth eruption >1 mm over the 16 y was found in 4 of 140 adults and averaged to 0.33 mm, equaling 0.021 mm/y. In the total sample, an increase in continuous eruption was significantly associated with decreases in mean gingival height (B = -0.34; 95% CI, -0.65 to -0.03). In a subsample of participants without tooth loss, continuous eruption was negatively associated with PD. This study confirmed that continuous eruption is clearly detectable and may contribute to lower gingival heights in the maxilla.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the relationship between masticatory muscle activity (MMA), self-reported oral behaviours (OBs) and overall physical activity (PA) in adult women. MATERIALS AND METHODS MMA and PA were assessed by a wearable electromyography (EMG) device and accelerometer respectively, worn over 2 non-consecutive days by 53 women (mean age 27.5 ± 6.4 years). Following the second recording day, self-reported OBs were assessed. MMA was assessed by the number, amplitude and duration of masseter contraction episodes. Masseter muscle EMG outcome measures were number of contraction episodes per hour (CEs/h) and the relative contraction time (RCT%). PA was assessed by time accumulated in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and 10-min bouts of MVPA per hour. Data were analysed using mixed model analysis. RESULTS MMA in free-living conditions consisted mostly of low-amplitude (<10% maximum voluntary clenching) and short-duration (<10 s) contraction episodes. Masseter CEs/h were not associated with self-reported levels of OB. Masseter CEs/h were positively associated with time accumulated in MVPA (F = 9.9; p = 0.002) and negatively associated with 10-min bouts of MVPA/h (F = 15.8; p <0.001). RCT% was not significantly associated with either. CONCLUSIONS Objectively assessed MMA is not associated with self-reported OB in free-moving adult females. Moderate to vigorous exercise and physical inactivity are accompanied with an increase in the number of masseter muscle contractions and thus possibly tooth clenching activity. CLINICAL RELEVANCE OB can be influenced by the type and extent of PA. Subjective assessment of MMA by questionnaire and/or interviews may be invalid.

Abstract
Bruxism is a sleep disorder in which the patient clinches and gnashes their teeth. Bruxism detection using traditional methods is time-consuming, cumbersome, and expensive. Therefore, an automatic tool to detect this disorder will alleviate the doctor workload and give valuable help to patients. In this paper, we targeted this goal and designed an automatic method to detect bruxism from the physiological signals using a novel hybrid classifier. We began with data collection. Then, we performed the analysis of the physiological signals and the estimation of the power spectral density. After that, we designed the novel hybrid classifier to enable the detection of bruxism based on these data. The classification of the subjects into “healthy” or “bruxism” from the electroencephalogram channel (C4-A1) obtained a maximum specificity of 92% and an accuracy of 94%. Besides, the classification of the sleep stages such as the wake (w) stage and rapid eye movement (REM) stage from the electrocardiogram channel (ECG1-ECG2) obtained a maximum specificity of 86% and an accuracy of 95%. The combined bruxism classification and the sleep stages classification from the electroencephalogram channel (C4-P4) obtained a maximum specificity of 90% and an accuracy of 97%. The results show that more accurate bruxism detection is achieved by exploiting the electroencephalogram signal (C4-P4). The present work can be applied for home monitoring systems for bruxism detection.

Abstract
Although bruxism is a common issue with a high prevalence, there has been a lack of epidemiological data about bruxism in Vietnam. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of bruxism and its impact on oral health-related quality of life among Vietnamese medical students. Bruxism was assessed by the Bruxism Assessment Questionnaire. Temporomandibular disorders were clinically examined followed by the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders Axis I. Perceived stress, educational stress, and oral health-related quality of life were assessed using the Vietnamese version of Perceived Stress Scale 10, the Vietnamese version of the Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents, and the Vietnamese version of the 14-item Oral Health Impact Profile, respectively. The prevalence of bruxism, sleep bruxism, awake bruxism, and both conditions in Vietnamese medical students were 51.2%, 38.2%, 23.4%, and 10.4% respectively. Stress, temporomandibular joint pain, masticatory muscle pain, and tooth attrition were associated with the presence of bruxism. Vietnamese medical students were negatively affected by bruxism in terms of oral health-related quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth wear has been recognised as a growing oral health problem in children and adolescents, with erosion often cited as the main cause of the tooth wear. Most studies on tooth wear have been conducted on children and adolescents, and only few studies focus on adults. Our aim was to study the prevalence of different types of tooth wear in an adult population and investigate related factors to tooth wear. METHODS A total of 831 adults in Sweden participated in the study by completing a questionnaire about oral health, a clinical examination, saliva sample and intraoral photographs. Tooth wear was estimated according to the Basic Erosive Wear Examination index, and the aetiology was determined based on the clinical appearance. RESULTS Almost 80% of the individuals had signs of erosion, and over 90% had signs of attrition. A high level of tooth wear was found in 4.6% of the individuals, few of who reported having received information about both attrition and erosion. Significantly, more men had tooth wear. Daily consumption of fruit had a stronger correlation to tooth wear than acidic drinks. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION A high level of tooth wear was found in 4.6% of the individuals, and it was more common in men than women. Aside from attrition, tooth wear due to erosion was a frequent finding in adults. Only a few of the individuals with a high level of tooth wear reported to have received information about tooth wear from their dentist or dental hygienist.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ceramic crown that fires the layering porcelain on zirconia corping is starting to be used due to aesthetic requirements. However, many ceramics are used, but wear characteristics are often unknown. OBJECTIVE This study was performed to investigate the wear of human enamel by porcelains, and to determine the influence of porcelain hardness, surface roughness and crystal of porcelain on the enamel wear. METHODS Enamel specimens were prepared from extracted human molar teeth. Porcelain specimens were prepared from Deguceram Gold, Vita Omega 900, and Cercon Ceram Kiss. Enamel wear volume was calculated and the porcelain wear depth, surface roughness and Vickers hardness was measured. Moreover, the observation of a crystal by scanning electron microscope and the crystal by X-ray diffraction were identified. RESULTS Omega 900 showed the smallest enamel wear volume and porcelain wear depth. The Vickers hardnesses of Omega 900 and Cercon Ceram Kiss were almost identical. Leucite was detected from Deguceram Gold and Omega 900, and Silica and Silicon Nitride were detected from Cercon Ceram Kiss. CONCLUSIONS The enamel wear is influenced not by the hardness of the porcelain but by the surface roughness, the size and shape of the crystal.

Abstract
Background The objective of this study was to elucidate the relationship between HIV anti-retroviral therapy and tooth wear. Methods Assessment of tooth wear was conducted both with a survey questionnaire and clinical assessment at Russell Street Dental Clinic in Portland, Oregon. The survey questionnaire comprised of questions on study participant’s gender, age, HIV status, current medications, awareness of tooth grinding or clenching, jaw soreness, tooth or gum soreness, and frequency of headaches. For the clinical evaluation, a dental provider recorded the degree of wear on each tooth using a scale of 0–3. An individual tooth-wear index was used to rank patients with regard to incisal and occlusal wear. Data analysis included descriptive analysis, tests of association and regression analysis using SPSS V.24. Results The study sample involved 93 patients (HIV + ve = 60, HIV–ve = 33) with age range of 20-90 yrs. (mean = 49 yrs., s.d = 13.3). 92 and 67% participants of the HIV + ve and HIV-ve groups, respectively, presented with tooth wear. The mean tooth wear index was higher in HIV + ve patients than HIV–ve patients (8.2 vs. 7.8), however, this difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). A significant, positive correlation was found between HIV presence and tooth wear index, after accounting for age (B = 0.71, p < 0.05). The number of years on anti-retroviral therapy alone was positively correlated with tooth wear index (R2 = 0.116, p < 0.05). After controlling for age, years of anti-retroviral therapy use was positively correlated with tooth wear index (B = 0.047, p > 0.05). Conclusions The findings from this study suggest that HIV + ve patients, who are on anti-retroviral therapy have significant tooth wear, although more studies with larger sample size are needed to confirm this. There is a critical need to initiate a dialogue with medical providers about tooth wear as a possible side effect of antiretroviral therapy and to introduce appropriate preventive measures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Salivary cortisol levels and biological rhythms could be hypothesized as part of the multifactorial framework that explains bruxism etiology. The objective of this study was to examine salivary cortisol levels and biological rhythms in schoolchildren with sleep bruxism (SB). METHODS This is a cross-sectional study with a school-based sample. The Biological Rhythms Interview for Assessment in Neuropsychiatry for Kids (BRIAN-K) was used to evaluate biological rhythms. Salivary samples were collected by the spitting method. The salivary cortisol level was measured by electrochemiluminescence. The criteria proposed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) were used to evaluate SB. RESULTS The SB prevalence was 16%. The SB presence was associated with belonging to families of lower economic status (p = 0.003). In addition, children with SB showed greater difficulty in maintaining biological rhythm (p = 0.002) and had higher levels of salivary cortisol (p = 0.034) compared with children without SB. CONCLUSIONS Higher levels of cortisol and disruption of biological rhythm was associated with SB in schoolchildren.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is the most common genetic human obesity syndrome and is characterized by hypotonia, endocrine disturbances, hyperphagia, obesity and mild mental retardation. Oral abnormalities, such as decreased salivary flow rates and extreme tooth wear, have also been described. Studies have shown a significant increase in reflux symptoms in individuals with obstuctive sleep apnoea syndrome and increased BMI, both of which are typical findings in PWS. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) has been identified in some individuals with PWS and is a significant intrinsic factor in dental tooth wear. The aim of this study was therefore to estimate the prevalence of GORD in adults and children and to evaluate a possible correlation between GORD and tooth wear in adults with PWS. They were all registered at the TAKO-centre. RESULTS Twenty-nine individuals, 17 adults with a mean age of 32.6 years (range 18-48) and 12 children with a mean age of 8.8 years (range 3-17), agreed to undergo 24-hour oesophageal pH monitoring, and 90% of those enrolled managed to complete the examination. Four children and eleven adults were diagnosed with pathological gastro-oesophageal reflux, which is defined as acid exposure (pH less than 4) more than 3.6 or 4.3 percent of the time, respectively. Manometry performed in the adult group showed a pathologically high lower oesophageal sphincter pressure in four of the five individuals who had normal oesophageal pH values (pH under 4 less than 4.3% of the time). The two groups (reflux and non-reflux) were well balanced according to BMI, genotype, tooth grinding and hyposalivation. However, twice as many individuals in the reflux group as in the non-reflux group reported high consumption of acidic foods and drinks. Increased tooth wear was significantly correlated with GORD in the two groups (reflux n=6 and non-reflux n=6). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of gastro-oesophageal reflux is high in individuals with PWS. Tooth wear was strongly associated with GORD and acidic drinks, and both may be important aetiological factors underlying the extreme tooth wear in this group. Our data suggest a need for routine screening for GORD and dental wear in young individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome.

Abstract
AIM To analyse patient-related factors (PRFs) and tooth-related factors (TRFs) associated with tooth loss due to periodontal disease (TLPD) in patients undergoing periodontal maintenance (PM). MATERIAL AND METHODS The sample consisted of 500 patients (mean follow-up of 20 years). The impact of PRFs on TLPD was analysed with Poisson regression and multivariate logistic regression. The simultaneous impact of PRFs and TRFs was analysed with multilevel logistic regression and Cox regression. RESULTS Tooth loss due to periodontal disease was 515 (mean 0.05 patient/year). The significant PRFs were severe periodontitis (p < 0.001), aggressive periodontitis (p < 0.001), smoking (p = 0.018), bruxism (p = 0.022) and baseline number of teeth (p = 0.001). These PRFs allowed characterizing patients losing more teeth. The whole TRFs analysed were significant, depending on the type of tooth and the category of each factor (e.g. mobility 0, 1, 2, and 3). The significant PRFs increased the risk of TLPD by 2 to 3 times while TRFs increased the risk to a higher extent. Mobility was the main TRF. CONCLUSIONS Severe periodontitis, aggressive periodontitis, smoking, bruxism and baseline number of teeth, as well as the whole TRFs analysed, were associated with TLPD.

Abstract
This study used conventional digital radiography to estimate the rate of tooth wear (TW) of maxillary and mandibular central incisors based on a cross-sectional study design. The crown length of 1239 permanent maxillary and mandibular central incisors from 346 persons (age groups: 10, 25, 40, 55 and 70 years ± 3) were measured by three calibrated dentists. Study teeth were intact incisally, had clearly visible incisal edges and cementoenamel junctions and had natural tooth antagonists. Measures were based on digital radiographic images (N = 666) archived in MiPACS within the electronic health record (axiUm(®)) from the College of Dentistry patient database. Incisor crown length decreased at a linear rate in both arches over the 60 years represented by the age groups. The average crown length for maxillary incisors in the youngest age group was 11.94 mm, which decreased by an average of 1.01 mm by median age 70. For mandibular incisors, the average crown length in the youngest age group was 9.58 mm, which decreased by an average of 1.46 mm in the oldest age group. Males and females showed similar rates of TW. Regardless of age, females demonstrated smaller mean crown height for maxillary incisors than males (P < 0.0001). Measures by the examiners demonstrated good agreement, with an interclass correlation coefficient of 0.869 and an average intra-examiner correlation of 99.5%, based on repeated measurements (n = 100). TW was estimated to average 1.01 mm for maxillary central incisors and 1.46 mm for mandibular central incisors by age 70 years.

Abstract
CONTEXT Age is one of the prime factors employed to establish the identity of an individual and the use of teeth for this purpose has been considered reliable. Tooth wear is widely accepted as a physiological consequence of aging and evaluation of tooth wear can be a simple and convenient tool to estimate age in adults. AIMS The present study was conducted to record the degree of tooth wear among Indian adults and to estimate their ages from the degree of tooth wear based on Kim's scoring system. MATERIALS AND METHODS Dental stone casts of 120 participants were used to assess the degree of occlusal tooth wear based on the criteria given by Kim et al. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED The age of all subjects was estimated based on these scores using multiple regression analysis function. RESULTS The degree of tooth wear showed a significant positive correlation with age in each and every examined tooth of both males and females. The predicted age was within ± 5 years of actual age in 70% of males and 68.3% females, and within ± 3 years of actual age in 50% of males and 50.1% of females. CONCLUSIONS Kim's scoring system has proven to be a useful tool in estimation of age using occlusal wear in an Indian population with a high level of accuracy in adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The goal of this study was to investigate the association between tooth wear and salivary measures in a random sample of patients from practices of dentist members of a practice-based research network. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients completed a questionnaire on oral self-care, health, dietary habits, medications, and socio-demographic variables. Six salivary characteristics (consistency, resting salivary flow, resting salivary pH, stimulated salivary flow, stimulated salivary pH, and buffering capacity) were measured, and a dental examination included categorizing patients according to the dentist's judgment of the degree of tooth wear (i.e., none/minimal, some, or severe/extreme). Bivariate and multinomial logistic regression models were used to relate salivary characteristics and other factors to the outcome of tooth wear. RESULTS Data are reported from 1,323 patients (age range 16-97 years) from 61 practices. Patient age, gender, number of teeth, and perception of dry mouth were associated with tooth wear, but salivary and dietary factors were either weakly or not related. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this cross-sectional assessment suggest that using these salivary tests and dietary assessments in real-life clinical settings is unlikely to be useful in assessing tooth wear risk. Suggestions are offered about risk assessment for tooth wear. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Assessing a dental patient's risk of tooth wear using salivary measures and dietary assessments as described is not recommended for general dental practice until stronger evidence exists indicating its utility.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Tooth wear is an increasing problem in a society where people are living longer. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of age, sex, and location of teeth on the severity of tooth wear and to determine the prevalence of dentin exposure in the general population of Germany. MATERIAL AND METHODS Tooth wear was measured in casts of both jaws of 836 persons with a 6-point (0-5) ordinal rating scale. Linear random-intercept regression models with the covariates of age, sex, jaw, and tooth group (with the participant as a grouping variable) were computed to determine the association of these covariates with tooth wear of a single tooth. RESULTS The mean tooth wear score across all age groups, both sexes, and all teeth was 2.9 (standard deviation, 0.8), and the prevalence of teeth with exposed dentin was 23.4%. The participants' age was correlated with the mean tooth wear scores (r=0.51). The tooth wear level among women was on average 0.15 units lower than among men, and tooth wear was on average 0.59 units higher for anterior teeth than for posterior teeth. CONCLUSIONS Increased tooth wear in anterior teeth may be due to the initially predominant guidance by anterior teeth, with age-related linear progress in tooth wear. Occlusal tooth wear scores and dentin exposure increase with age.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to describe orofacial features and functions and oral health associated with Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) in relation to the variable phenotypic expression of the condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Nordic Orofacial Test-Screening (NOT-S), MHC Questionnaire, MHC Observation chart and clinical examinations of nasal and pharyngeal conditions and chewing and swallowing function were used to assess 19 individuals aged 5-74 years (median 34 years). TCS severity scores were calculated by a clinical geneticist. RESULTS Orofacial features characterizing the study group were altered profile, increased mandibular angle, narrow hypopharynx and facial asymmetry. Basic orofacial functions such as breathing, eating, facial expression and speech were affected in all subjects demonstrating orofacial dysfunction in at least two NOT-S domains (median NOT-S total score 4/12, range 2-7). Significant correlation was found between the TCS severity scores reflecting phenotypic expression and the NOT-S total scores reflecting orofacial function. Self-reported experience of dry oral mucosa was common. Overall, dental health was good with few carious lesions diagnosed, but considerable need for orthodontic treatment was documented. CONCLUSIONS Altered orofacial features and functions in TCS are common and often persist into late adolescence and adulthood. The functional level was correlated with the phenotypic variability of the condition. The standard of oral health was satisfactory. The findings indicated that individuals with TCS are likely to require lifelong health services related to their oral condition.

Abstract
AIM To determine the prevalence of signs and symptoms in a group of tooth wear patients referred to a hospital-based consultant clinic. METHOD The clinical records of 290 patients referred to the Liverpool University Dental Hospital for tooth wear were reviewed retrospectively. A systematic sampling technique was used to select every alternate patient held on the consultant database. RESULTS There were significantly more males than females in a ratio of 2.3:1. Significantly more males (56%) presented with severe tooth wear compared with females (31%) (p <0.001). Aesthetic concerns were the most prevalent presenting complaint (59%) and sensitivity was the second most common presenting complaint (40%). Functional problems and pain were less prevalent at 17% and 14% respectively. Subjects who had lost posterior support had more severe wear and more worn anterior teeth, which was statistically significant (p = 0.001). The proportion of subjects with undiagnosed apical pathology on worn teeth was 13%. CONCLUSIONS Tooth wear predominated in males in this study. Patient dissatisfaction with appearance is the most common complaint and endodontic signs and symptoms are low in prevalence. Contrary to previous studies, lack of posterior support resulted in greater severity of wear, therefore restoring support is recommended.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cell-based therapies for bone augmentation after tooth loss and for the treatment of periodontal defects improve healing defects. Usually, osteogenic cells or stem cells are cultivated in 2D primary cultures, before they are combined with scaffold materials, even though this means a loss of the endogenous 3D microenvironment for the cells. Moreover, the use of single-cell suspensions for the inoculation of scaffolds or for the direct application into an area of interest has the disadvantages of low initial cell numbers and susceptibility to unwanted cellular distribution, respectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS We addressed the question whether an alternative to monolayer cultures, namely 3D microtissues, has the potential to improve osteogenic tissue engineering and its clinical outcome. RESULTS By contrast, to monolayer cultures, osteogenic differentiation of 3D microtissues is enhanced by mimicking in vivo conditions. It seems that the osteogenic differentiation in microtissues is enhanced by strong integrin-extracellular matrix interaction and by stronger autocrine BMP2 signaling. Moreover, microtissues are less prone to wash out by body fluids and allow the precise administration of large cell numbers. CONCLUSION Microtissue cultures have closer characteristics with cells in vivo and their enhanced osteogenic differentiation makes scaffold-free microtissues a promising concept in osteogenic tissue engineering. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Microtissues are particularly suitable for tissue engineering because they improve seeding efficiency of biomaterials by increasing the cell load of a scaffold. This results in accelerated osteogenic tissue formation and could contribute to earlier implant stability in mandibular bone augmentation.

Abstract
Objectives The paper’s aim is to review dentin hypersensitivity (DHS), discussing pain mechanisms and aetiology. Materials and methods Literature was reviewed using search engines with MESH terms, DH pain mechanisms and aetiology (including abrasion, erosion and periodontal disease). Results The many hypotheses proposed for DHS attest to our lack of knowledge in understanding neurophysiologic mechanisms, the most widely accepted being the hydrodynamic theory. Dentin tubules must be patent from the oral environment to the pulp. Dentin exposure, usually at the cervical margin, is due to a variety of processes involving gingival recession or loss of enamel, predisposing factors being periodontal disease and treatment, limited alveolar bone, thin biotype, erosion and abrasion. Conclusions The current pain mechanism of DHS is thought to be the hydrodynamic theory. The initiation and progression of DHS are influenced by characteristics of the teeth and periodontium as well as the oral environment and external influences. Risk factors are numerous often acting synergistically and always influenced by individual susceptibility. Clinical relevance Whilst the pain mechanism of DHS is not well understood, clinicians need to be mindful of the aetiology and risk factors in order to manage patients’ pain and expectations and prevent further dentin exposure with subsequent sensitivity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare complex multsystemic genetic disorder characterized by severe neonatal hypotonia, endocrine disturbances, hyperphagia and obesity, mild mental retardation, learning disabilities, facial dysmorphology and oral abnormalities. The purpose of the present study was to explore the prevalence of tooth wear and possible risk factors in individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome. METHODS Forty-nine individuals (6-40 years) with PWS and an age- and sex-matched control group were included. Tooth wear was evaluated from dental casts and intraoral photographs and rated by four examiners using the Visual Erosion Dental Examination (VEDE) scoring system and the individual tooth wear index IA. In accordance with the VEDE scoring system, tooth wear was also evaluated clinically. Whole saliva was collected. RESULTS Mean VEDE score was 1.70 ± 1.44 in the PWS group and 0.46 ± 0.36 in the control group (p < 0.001). Median IA was 7.50 (2.60-30.70) in the PWS group and 2.60 (0.90-4.70) among controls (p < 0.001). In the PWS group tooth wear correlated significantly with age (VEDE; r = 0.79, p < 0.001, IA; r = 0.82, p < 0.001) and saliva secretion (VEDE; r = 0.46, p = 0.001, IA; r = 0.43, p = 0.002). Tooth grinding was also associated with tooth wear in the PWS group, as indicated by the mean VEDE 2.67 ± 1.62 in grinders and 1.14 ± 0.97 in non-grinders (p = 0.001) and median IA values 25.70 (5.48-68.55) in grinders and 5.70 (1.60-9.10) in non-grinders (p = 0.003). Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed with tooth wear as the dependent variable and PWS (yes/no), age, tooth grinding and saliva secretion as independent variables. PWS (yes/no), age and tooth grinding retained a significant association with tooth wear, VEDE (p < 0.001) and log IA (p < 0.001). The only factor significantly associated with tooth wear in the control group was age. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides evidence that tooth wear, in terms of both erosion and attrition, is a severe problem in Prader-Willi syndrome. There is therefore considerable need for prosthodontic rehabilitation in young adults with PWS.

Abstract
Bruxism is a movement disorder characterized by grinding and clenching of teeth. Awake bruxism is found more in females as compared to males while sleep bruxism shows no such gender prevalence. Etiology of bruxism can be divided into three groups psychosocial factors, peripheral factors and pathophysiological factors. Treatment modalities involve occlusal correction, behavioural changes and pharmacological approach. A literature search was performed using National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Database, Pubmed and Google search engines. The search term 'Bruxism' yielded 2,358 papers out of which 230 were review papers. Most of the papers selected were recently published during the period of 1996-2010 and very few of them were published before 1996.

Abstract
Objective. To quantify effects on occlusion and temporomandibular function of mandibular distal extension removable partial dentures in shortened dental arches. Methods. Subjects wearing mandibular extension removable partial dentures (n = 25) were compared with subjects with shortened dental arches without extension (n = 74) and with subjects who had worn a mandibular extension removable partial denture in the past (n = 19). Subjects with complete dentitions (n = 72) were controls. Data were collected at baseline and at 3-, 6-, and 9-year observations. Results. Occlusal activity in terms of reported awareness of bruxism and occlusal tooth wear of lower anterior teeth did not differ significantly between the groups. In contrast, occlusal tooth wear of premolars in shortened dental arches with or without extension dentures was significantly higher than in the controls. Differences amongst groups with respect to signs and symptoms related to temporomandibular disorders were not found. Occlusal support of the dentures did not influence anterior spatial relationship. Occlusal contacts of the denture teeth decreased from 70% for second premolars via 50% for first molars, to 30% for second molars. Conclusions. Mandibular distal extension removable partial dentures in moderate shortened dental arches had no effects on occlusion and temporomandibular function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To estimate the prevalence of tooth wear and to investigate factors associated with tooth wear in patients from general practices in the Northwest United States. METHODS Data on the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases during the previous year were collected in a survey with a systematic random sample of patients (n= 1530) visiting general dentists from the Northwest Practice-based REsearch Collaborative in Evidence-based DENTistry (PRECEDENT) (n=80). Prevalence ratios (PRs) of moderate to severe occlusal and incisal tooth wear by patient characteristics were estimated using cluster-adjusted multiple binomial regression for adults (18+ years) and children/adolescents (3-17 years). RESULTS For adults, the mean number of teeth with wear facets was 5.4 [95% confidence interval (CI) =4.6-6.2] and 51% of the adults had four or more teeth with wear. Participants 45-64 and 65+ years old were 1.3 (95% CI=1.1-1.6) and 1.4 (95% CI=1.1-1.8) times as likely to have 4+ teeth with moderate to severe wear facets as participants 18-44 years old. Adult males had a 20% (PR=1.2; 95% CI=1.1-1.4) higher prevalence of wear than adult females. Adults who were using, or had ever used occlusal splints had higher prevalence of tooth wear compared to those who never used such appliances (PR=1.3; 95% CI=1.0-1.5). Adults with any periodontal bone loss also had a 20% higher prevalence of wear than adults without periodontal disease (PR=1.2; 95% CI=1.0-1.4). For children/adolescents, the mean number of teeth with moderate to severe wear facets was 1.6 (95% CI=0.9-2.6) and 31% of the children had one or more teeth with wear facets. The adjusted prevalence ratio of tooth wear (1+ teeth with wear facets) for boys was 1.6 times as high (95% CI=1.1-2.4) as compared with girls. The prevalence of wear for children 12+ years old was 50% (PR=0.5; 95% CI=0.3-0.8) lower than that of children <12 years old. Angle's class II was associated with higher tooth wear prevalence (PR= 1.8; 95% CI=1.3-2.6) than class I. Children with posterior or anterior open bite had lower prevalence of wear than their counterparts (PR=0.6; 95% CI=0.3-1.0). No associations were observed between tooth wear and orthodontic treatment, missing teeth, and race/ethnicity. CONCLUSION Tooth wear is a prevalent condition in this population. Among adults, higher prevalences of tooth wear were observed among those who were older, males, had used occlusal splints and had periodontal disease. Among children, higher prevalences were associated with younger age, male gender, class II malocclusion and the absence of open bite. Abstract
The purpose of this review was to evaluate the literature on the rehabilitation of tooth wear, with some pertinent historical, epidemiological and aetiological aspects of tooth wear provided as background information. In historical skull material, extensive tooth wear, assumed to be the result of coarser diets, was found even in relatively young individuals. Such wear is seldom seen in current populations. Although many of the factors associated with extensive tooth wear in historical material are no longer present or prevalent, new risk factors have emerged. In the young individual, the literature points to a global rise in soft drink consumption as the most significant factor in the development of tooth wear through dental erosion. Among older individuals, lifestyle changes and chronic diseases that are controlled with medications that may, in turn, result in regurgitation and/or dry mouth, are possible reasons amongst others for the widespread clinical impression of an increasing prevalence of tooth wear. The aetiology of tooth wear is multifactorial and the role of bruxism is not known. Clinical controlled trials of restorative and prosthodontic approaches for the range of clinical conditions that wear can give rise to, are limited in number and quality. Equally, the striking lack of evidence regarding the long-term outcomes of treatment methods and materials calls for caution in clinical decision-making. Notwithstanding these observations, clinicians have provided and continue to provide rehabilitative strategies for managing their patients' worn dentitions that range traditionally from extensive prosthodontics to an increasing reliance on adhesive techniques.

Abstract
Bruxism is a much-discussed clinical issue in dentistry. Although bruxism is not a life-threatening disorder, it can influence the quality of human life, especially through dental problems, such as tooth wear, frequent fractures of dental restorations and pain in the oro-facial region. Therefore, various clinical methods have been devised to assess bruxism over the last 70 years. This paper reviews the assessment of bruxism, provides information on various assessment methods which are available in clinical situations and discusses their effectiveness and usefulness. Currently, there is no definitive method for assessing bruxism clinically that has reasonable diagnostic and technical validity, affects therapeutic decisions and is cost effective. One future direction is to refine questionnaire items and clinical examination because they are the easiest to apply in everyday practice. Another possible direction is to establish a method that can measure actual bruxism activity directly using a device that can be applied to patients routinely. More clinical studies should examine the clinical impact of bruxism on oral structures, treatment success and the factors influencing the decision-making process in dental treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of the study was to present the results of an oral examination of individuals with thalidomide embryopathy in relation to dental conditions and functional aspects of the masticatory system, with a special focus on tooth wear. MATERIAL AND METHODS All 108 subjects with thalidomide embryopathy living in Sweden were invited to participate in a comprehensive investigation, and approximately one-third, 31 subjects (13 F and 18 M, aged 45-49 years), took part. The methods included a questionnaire and clinical and radiographic examinations. RESULTS Most of the subjects had regular dental care, which they in general considered sufficient. All except one always brushed their teeth themselves. One subject had limited mouth opening (25 mm). There were no great deviations from normal anatomy and function of the masticatory system. Caries and periodontal conditions were also normal. Regurgitation was reported by 42% of the subjects. Tooth wear was more extensive than in comparable age groups. About a third of the subjects had Class III or edge-to-edge occlusion. CONCLUSIONS In general, subjects with thalidomide embryopathy had no great deviations in dental conditions from people of the same age in the general population except for an increased rate of tooth wear and a higher prevalence of prenormal jaw relations. Tooth wear was related less to use of the teeth as tools and more to dental erosion associated, among other things, with a high rate of regurgitation.

Abstract
Severe tooth wear is discussed from the perspective of appreciating the aetiologic background of the problem. A multifactorial basis is acknowledged for the extensively worn dentition and efforts to eliminate or minimize these underlying factors are important. The management of a case of severe incisal and occlusal wear can adopt different approaches. The author proposes the rationale and advantages for involving orthodontic preparation as part of the occlusal rehabilitation.

Abstract
Moist snuff is the most popular form of orally-used smokeless tobacco in North America and parts of Europe. Because moist snuff use conveys lower risks for morbidity or mortality than does cigarette smoking, its use has been proposed as a tobacco harm-reduction strategy. This article critically reviews new and published epidemiologic evidence on health effects of moist snuff and its patterns of use relative to smoking in the United States, Sweden, and Norway. The available evidence suggests that: (1) moist snuff is a human carcinogen and toxin, (2) increased promotion of moist snuff has led to increased sales in those countries, (3) the uptake of moist snuff in these three countries during the past several decades has occurred primarily among adolescent and young adult men, (4) increased prevalence of snuff use has not been associated consistently with a reduction in smoking initiation or prevalence, (5) moist snuff use apparently plays a very minor role in smoking cessation in the U.S. and an inconsistent role in Sweden, (6) U.S. states with the lowest smoking prevalence also tend to have the lowest prevalence of snuff use, (7) there are no data on the efficacy of snuff as a smoking-cessation method, (8) the prevalence of cigarette smoking is relatively high among people who use snuff, and (9) snuff use is more consistently associated with partial substitution for smoking than with complete substitution. The evidence base for promotion of snuff use as a public health strategy is weak and inconsistent.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A systematic review identified randomised and other trials (1966-2006) of studies of occlusal design of crowns, complete (CRP) and partial (PRP) removable prostheses and implant-borne reconstructions, and whether occlusal design influenced diet, quality of life, bruxism and attrition. METHODS The search primarily included Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and Central Register of Controlled Trials, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness, Ovid Medline and PreMedline. RESULTS The search yielded 1315 studies: 20 on CRP--1 RCT, one systematic review, four clinical trials, 10 case series; 22 on PRP - one cohort study, two experimental studies, 15 case reports or case series, three clinical trials; 23 on implant superstructures, and 24 reports on implant failure, 37 on oral health related quality of life, eight on attrition; and four studies on masticatory function. CONCLUSIONS CRP--Studies of occlusal form and tooth arrangements, included balanced, lingualised and monoplane arrangements--lingualised posterior occlusion was preferred. Early studies on CRP design were observational as case reports, however data suggested that optimum function is achieved by modification of the maxillary occlusion, irrespective of the opposing mandibular occlusion. PRP--Edentulous ridge resorption is patient-specific, has a multifactorial aetiology and there is no objective data to confirm that mechanical factors cause bone loss; oral hygiene management is crucial for long-term health. Studies on distal extension PDs confirmed a link between bite force and masticatory function; preservation of two functioning posterior tooth units ipsilateral to the distal extension optimises function. Data indicate that patient-specific factors, rather than PD design-specific features, influence long-term PD outcomes. Implant superstructures--There is little scientific evidence specifying occlusal and superstructure design for fixed prostheses for teeth or implants. Occlusal scheme design and occlusal form have evolved through clinical experience, but there is no evidence to indicate that a particular design is superior. Complex neurophysiological mechanisms allow the jaw muscle system to accommodate to oral and dental changes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Attrition and occlusal factors and masticatory function or dysfunction are thought to be related. This study aims to systematically review the literature on this topic with the emphasis to find evidence for occlusion-based treatment protocols for attrition. MATERIALS AND METHODS Literature was searched using PubMed (1980 to 2/2006) and the Cochrane Library of Clinical Trials with the keywords 'tooth' and 'wear'. Five steps were followed. Exclusion was based on the following: (1) reviews, case-reports, studies on non-human tooth material, and studies not published in English and (2) historical or forensic studies. Included were (3) in vivo studies. Next, studies on (4) occlusal factors, function or dysfunction [temporomandibular disorders (TMD), bruxism], or intervention, and (5) attrition were included. Two investigators independently assessed the abstracts; measure of agreement was calculated using Cohen's kappa; disagreement was resolved by discussion. Full-text articles were obtained and correlation between outcomes on occlusal factors, (dys)function, treatment, and attrition were retrieved. References in the papers included in the final analysis were cross-matched with the original list of references to add references that met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS The search procedure revealed 1289 references on tooth wear. The numbers of included studies after each step were (1) 345 (kappa=0.8), (2) 287 (kappa=0.87), (3) 174 (kappa=0.99), (4) 81 (kappa=0.71), and (5) 27 (kappa=0.68). Hand searches through the reference lists revealed six additional papers to be included. Analysis of the 33 included papers failed to find sound evidence for recommending a certain occlusion-based treatment protocol above another in the management of attrition. CONCLUSION Some studies reported correlations between attrition and anterior spatial relationships. No studies were found suggesting that absent posterior support necessarily leads to increased attrition, though one study found that fewer number of teeth resulted in higher tooth wear index (on the remaining teeth). Attrition seems to be co-existent with self-reported bruxism. Reports on attrition and TMD signs and symptoms provide little understanding of the relationship between the two.
