Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the incidence and ophthalmic complications of pediatric uveitis using the Korean National Health Insurance (NHI) Service database. DESIGN Nationwide population-based longitudinal cohort study. METHODS This study used the NHI database from 2005 to 2021 and included individuals <18 years of age diagnosed with uveitis on at least three separate visits between 2010 and 2014, with a five-year wash-out period and a seven-year follow-up period. All uveitis cases were classified as either anterior or nonanterior on the basis of the diagnostic code. The occurrence of ophthalmic complications during the follow-up period, and the systemic and socioeconomic associations between pediatric uveitis and its ophthalmic complications were investigated. We obtained the incidence of total, anterior, and nonanterior pediatric uveitis between 2010 and 2014; the percentage of ophthalmic complications during the follow-up period; and hazard ratios for ophthalmic complications of anterior and nonanterior uveitis. RESULTS A total of 9495 cases of pediatric uveitis (8734 cases with anterior and 761 with nonanterior uveitis) were identified, with an average annual incidence (per 10 000 children) of total, anterior, and nonanterior uveitis being 2.0, 1.8, and 0.2, respectively. The most common complications were glaucoma or presumed ocular hypertension, macular disease, and amblyopia. Patients with nonanterior uveitis had a significantly higher risk of ophthalmic complications including retinal detachment, cataract, amblyopia, and glaucoma or presumed ocular hypertension than those with anterior uveitis. CONCLUSIONS This nationwide analysis of pediatric uveitis in South Korea revealed an average incidence of 2.0 per 10 000 children, highlighting the higher risks of ophthalmic complications associated with nonanterior uveitis.

Abstract
Purpose Previous studies have reported divergent sexual responses to aging; however, specific variations in gene expression between aging males and females and their potential association with age-related retinal diseases remain unclear. This study collected data from public databases and developed a comprehensive comparison of retina between aging females and males. Methods Single-cell RNA (scRNA) and bulk RNA sequencing data of the aging retina from females and males in public databases were utilized for integrated analysis to investigate sex-biased expression in retina. Additionally, in vitro experiments were conducted on individuals with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) to validate the sex difference in degenerative retina. Results Bulk RNA analysis revealed sex-biased expression of specific genes in retina of aging individuals, with immune pathway-related genes exhibiting higher expression in females compared to males. The scRNA analysis demonstrated that sex-biased gene expression was cell-type specific in aging retina. Furthermore, susceptibility genes for age-related macular degeneration and RP exhibited variation across different cell types and sexes. Cell-to-cell communication unveiled an increased interaction associated with TGFB1, CCL7, and VEGFA in Müller glia, microglia, and astrocytes of female retina. Notably, we observed female-biased chemokine expression in microglia contributing to heightened susceptibility to immune inflammation in female retina. Finally, we confirmed a more pronounced inflammatory response during degeneration in female rd10 mouse retina compared to males. Conclusions This study provides a comprehensive comparison of retina between females and males in healthy aging human retina and highlights the significance of sex as an influential factor in retinal diseases.

Abstract
PURPOSE Uveitis is a common ocular manifestation in individuals with sarcoidosis, a multisystem inflammatory disorder. This study aimed to explore clinical and genetic factors associated with the presence or absence of uveitis in sarcoidosis patients. METHODS Total 625 Dutch sarcoidosis patients were included. Among these, 170 underwent ophthalmic examination, and 61 were diagnosed with uveitis. Demographic and clinical data, including age, gender, race, biopsy status, chest radiography findings, TNF-α inhibitor treatment, and uveitis classification were collected retrospectively from medical records. Genetic data was available for HLA haplotypes, TNF-α G-308A, and BTNL2 G16071A polymorphisms. RESULTS The majority of the patients presented with bilateral uveitis (80.3%). The proportion of women was higher in the uveitis group compared to the non-uveitis group (67.2% and 47.7%; p = 0.014). Pulmonary involvement (chest radiographic stage II-III) was significantly lower in patients with uveitis (36.1% versus 64.2%; p < 0.001). Patients with uveitis were more often treated with TNF-α inhibitors (67.2% versus 29.4%; p < 0.001) and the outcome was better compared with the non-uveitis group, 92% vs 68%, responders (p < 0.012). Uveitis patients treated with TNF-α inhibitors (either adalimumab or infliximab) were more likely to suffer from intermediate or posterior uveitis than anterior uveitis. Genetic analysis identified a significant association between the BTNL2 G16071A GG genotype and uveitis (p = 0.012). CONCLUSION This study highlights distinctive demographic, clinical and genetic features associated with uveitis in sarcoidosis patients. Ocular sarcoidosis was more prevalent in women. Further research is warranted to explore the implications of these findings for treatment strategies and prognostic assessments.

Abstract
To investigate for the risk of uveitis among such patients. A retrospective cohort study utilized the TriNetX database and recruited pediatric autoimmune patients diagnosed between January 1st 2004 and December 31st 2022. The non-autoimmune cohort were randomly selected control patients matched by sex, age, and index year. The main outcome is the incidence of new-onset uveitis. 175,328 pediatric patients with autoimmune diseases (mean age 10.7 +/- 5.1 years; 55.8% female; 66.2% White) and 175,328 pediatric patients without autoimmune diseases (mean age 10.8+/- 5.1 years; 55.7% female; 66% White) were recruited. The autoimmune cohort demonstrated a significantly increased uveitis risk across our 18-year study period (HR 4.42 [95% CI 3.98-4.90]). Iridocyclitis, chorioretinal inflammation, unspecified purulent endophthalmitis, panuveitis, retinal vasculitis, and sympathetic uveitis were uveitis conditions significantly associated with autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune patients who had used immunosuppressant medications had increased uveitis risk compared to those who had never used immunosuppressants. Our subgroup analysis also demonstrated a significantly increased uveitis risk associated with specific autoimmune conditions. Conditions include inflammatory arthritis, systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases, systemic vasculitis, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, and immune thrombocytopenic purpura. Using hazard ratios HR for comparison, we were able to identify that, out of the previously broadly defined category of autoimmune diseases, only these specific conditions were significantly associated with pediatric uveitis. Uveitis was significantly associated with autoimmune diseases among the pediatric population.

Abstract
Ocular syphilis is a re-emerging inflammatory eye disease with a clear gender imbalance, disproportionately affecting men. We investigated the impact of gender on the presentation, management practices and clinical outcomes of this condition. Data generated from a study of patients consecutively diagnosed with ocular syphilis who attended a subspecialist uveitis service at one of four hospitals in Brazil over a 30-month period were disaggregated for analysis by gender. Two-hundred and fourteen eyes (161 men and 53 women) of 127 patients (96 men and 31 women) were included. Posterior uveitis was the most common presentation in both men and women (80.1% vs. 66.7%, p > 0.05), but men were significantly more likely to have vitritis as a feature of their disease (49.4% versus 28.8%, p = 0.019). Three eyes of women had nodular anterior scleritis (p = 0.015). Men were more likely to undergo a lumbar puncture to assess for neurosyphilis (71.9% vs. 51.6%, p = 0.048), but men and women undergoing a lumbar puncture were equally likely to have a cerebrospinal fluid abnormality (36.2% vs. 25.0%, p = 0.393). All patients were treated with aqueous penicillin G or ceftriaxone, and there was a trend towards more men receiving adjunctive systemic corticosteroid treatment as part of their management (65.2% vs. 46.7%, p = 0.071). There were no significant differences in the age of presentation, bilaterality of disease, anatomical classification of uveitis, initial or final visual acuity, and rates of ocular complications between men and women. Our findings indicate that ocular syphilis has comparable outcomes in men and women, but that there are differences in the type of ocular inflammation and management practices between the genders.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effect of gender on the clinical features and outcomes of ocular toxoplasmosis. METHODS 262 patients (139 women and 123 men) presenting to a tertiary referral uveitis service in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, with serological and clinical evidence of ocular toxoplasmosis were prospectively enrolled in an observational study. Predefined data items including demographics, descriptors of uveitis and ocular toxoplasmosis, best-corrected visual acuity and ocular complications were disaggregated by gender and compared statistically. RESULTS Approximately equal numbers of women and men had active versus inactive ocular toxoplasmosis. In both women and men, most infections were remotely acquired. Men were significantly more likely to present with primary active disease than women (24.4% vs 12.9%); conversely, women were significantly more likely to present with recurrent active disease than men (36.0% vs 28.5%). One toxoplasmic retinal lesion was observed in more eyes of men than eyes of women (50.4% vs 35.3%), while women's eyes were more likely to have multiple lesions than men's eyes (54.7% vs 39.8%). Lesions in women's eyes were significantly more likely to occur at the posterior pole compared with those in men's eyes (56.1% vs 39.8%). Measures of vision were similar for women and men. There were no significant differences in measures of visual acuity, ocular complications, and occurrence and timing of reactivations between the genders. CONCLUSION Ocular toxoplasmosis has equivalent outcomes in women and men, with clinical differences in the form and type of disease, as well as characteristics of the retinal lesion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is linked to immune dysregulation and systemic inflammation. While previous studies indicate a higher prevalence of ocular manifestations in HS, the specific risk of keratopathy and keratitis remains unclear. The primary aim of this study was to assess the risk of keratitis and keratopathy in individuals with HS. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this retrospective cohort study conducted with data from the TriNetX database, 53,716 patients with HS were matched to an equivalent number of non-HS controls using propensity score matching. The study covered the period from January 1st, 2005, to December 31st, 2017. Hazard ratios and their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs), were computed to evaluate the occurrences of keratitis and keratopathy over a 5-year duration in patients with HS, compared to non-HS controls. RESULTS HS was associated with a 1.52 times higher risk of keratitis over a 5-year period (95%CI=1.24-1.86) and a 1.47 times higher risk of keratopathy (95%CI=1.18-1.84). These risks remained consistent in sensitivity analyses. The elevated risk of keratitis was observed across both sexes. However, the risk of keratopathy was significantly higher in women with HS (HR=1.61, 95%CI=1.24-2.10) and individuals aged 18-64 years (HR=1.32, 95%CI=1.04-1.68). CONCLUSION HS was linked to an elevated risk of both keratitis and keratopathy over a 5-year period. Ophthalmologic manifestations are recommended to be considered in HS standard care.

Abstract
Gender medicine is a medical specialty that addresses gender differences in health and disease. Traditionally, medical research and clinical practice have often been focused on male subjects and patients. As a result, gender differences in medicine have been overlooked. Gender medicine considers the biological, psychological, and social differences between the genders and how these differences affect the development, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. For ophthalmological diseases epidemiological differences are known. However, there are not yet any gender-based ophthalmic treatment approaches for women and men. This review provides an overview of gender differences in retinal diseases. It is intended to make ophthalmologists, especially retinologists, more sensitive to the topic of gender medicine. The goal is to enhance comprehension of these aspects by highlighting fundamental gender differences. Integrating gender medicine into ophthalmological practice helps promote personalized and gender-responsive health care and makes medical research more accurate and relevant to the entire population.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to describe changes in the geographic distribution of self-reported visual impairment (VI) over the last decade (2010-2019) in the U.S. METHODS Our study was an analysis of publicly available data collected between 2010 and 2019 from the Census Bureau American Community Survey. RESULTS The mean overall prevalence of self-reported VI from 2010 to 2019 was 2.31% in the United States, and there was a significant increase in VI over the past decade from 2.25% in 2010-2014 to 2.37% in 2015-2019 (p < .001). VI was significantly higher in rural counties (3.58%), compared to urban (3.10%) or metropolitan counties (2.18%) (p < .001). In terms of geographic region, the South of the United States had the highest rate of VI (2.63%) (p < .001). For age groups > 17-years-old in the 2010-2019 data, women had higher rates of VI compared to men. CONCLUSIONS Prevalence of self-reported visual impairment has risen and disproportionately affects certain communities. This includes individuals living in the South, in rural counties, and women.

Abstract
Background Ocular morbidities associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have not received much attention in Africa, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. They are among the commonest (40%) extra-articular organ involvement in RA. If undiagnosed, there is a potential risk of them causing visual impairment or blindness. There is no documented study in Uganda on the magnitude of eye disorders among RA patients. Aim To determine the spectrum of eye disorders and associated factors among patients with RA attending Mulago National Referral Hospital. Methods A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted among adults with RA attending the rheumatology clinic between July 2021 and September 2021. Clinical and sociodemographic data were collected, and ophthalmologic examinations were performed on all consenting participants. Modified Poisson regression with robust standard error was used to determine factors associated with eye disorders. Results Overall, 105 patients with RA were enrolled, of which, 53 (50.5%) had eye disorders. The commonest disorder (54.7%, n=29) was dry-eye syndrome. Factors that were significantly associated with eye disorders were age 36-55 years (aPR 1.56, p=0.015), duration of RA >5 years (aPR 1.81, p=0.001), use of hydroxychloroquine >5 years (aPR 1.77, p=0.041), dose of oral steroids >10 mg/day (aPR 1.49, p=0.034), and history of both diabetes and hypertension (aPR 1.87, p=0.014). Conclusion The prevalence of eye disorders among patients with RA was high, with the commonest being dry-eye syndrome. We recommend that ocular examinations be performed on every patient at the time of RA diagnosis for early detection of eye disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE Retinal vasculitis or vascular occlusion (RV/RO) have been reported after brolucizumab for neovascular age-related macular degeneration. This systematic literature review evaluated RV/RO events after brolucizumab in real-world practice. METHODS Systematic literature searches identified 89 publications; 19 were included. RESULTS Publications described 63 patients (70 eyes) with an RV/RO event following brolucizumab. Mean age was 77.6 years and 77.8% of patients were women; 32 eyes (45.7%) received one brolucizumab injection before RV/RO. Mean (range) time to event from last brolucizumab injection was 19.4 (0-63) days, with 87.5% of events occurring within 30 days. Among eyes with preevent and postevent visual acuity (VA) assessments, 22/42 eyes (52.4%) showed unchanged (±0.08 logMAR) or improved vision from last recorded preevent assessment at latest follow-up, whereas 15/42 eyes (35.7%) showed ≥0.30 logMAR (≥15 letters) VA reduction. Patients with no VA loss were on average slightly younger and had a higher proportion of nonocclusive events. CONCLUSION Most RV/RO events reported after brolucizumab in early real-world practice occurred in women. Among eyes with VA measurements, approximately half experienced VA loss; overall, about one-third had VA reduction of ≥0.30 logMAR at latest follow-up, with indications of regional variations.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) on endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) in rats. EIU was induced in male Sprague Dawley rats by the subcutaneous injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). During LPS injection, 5-ALA diluted with saline was administered via gastric gavage. After 24 h, clinical scores were assessed after which aqueous humor (AqH) samples were obtained. The number of infiltrating cells, protein concentration, and levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), nitric oxide (NO), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in AqH were measured. For histological examination, both eyes of some rats were enucleated. In vitro, a mouse macrophage cell line (RAW264.7 cells) was stimulated by LPS with or without 5-ALA. Western blot was used to analyze the expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2. 5-ALA suppressed the EIU clinical scores, infiltrating cell number, and protein concentration while improving the histopathologic scores. In particular, 100 mg/kg 5-ALA reduced the concentrations of NO, PGE2, TNF-α, and IL-6 in AqH, similar to 1 mg/kg prednisolone. In addition, 5-ALA suppressed iNOS upregulation in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Therefore, 5-ALA has an anti-inflammatory effect on EIU through the inhibition of the upregulation of inflammatory mediators.

Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the spectrum of eye disorders in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted among 100 consecutive patients with RA and SLE. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to obtain details of patients’ sociodemographics, type of rheumatic disease, and prescribed medications. Each patient had a detailed examination of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. Refraction, intraocular pressure measurement, Schirmer’s test, tear breakup time, gonioscopy, and dilated fundoscopy were also done. Fundus photograph, central visual field assessment, and optical coherence tomography were done as necessary. Analysis was done with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: A total of 100 patients consisting of 74 RA and 26 SLE patients were evaluated. The female: male ratio was 4.3: 1 for RA, and all SLE patients were females. The prevalence of eye disorders was 42% in all patients; it was 41.9% and 42.3% among RA and SLE patients, respectively. The most common eye disorders were dry eye (38), refractive errors (18), and cataract (16). The mean age of RA patients with eye disorders (52.19 ± 16.17 years) was significantly higher than those without eye disorders (42.30 ± 13.14 years) (P = 0.005). Conclusion: Eye disorders are common in RA and SLE. Comprehensive eye examination should be done on all RA and SLE patients at diagnosis and before commencement of medications, and patients should be referred promptly for evaluation when they have eye complaints.

Abstract
AIMS To assess vision-related (VR-QOL) and health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) in a large series of patients with de novo uveitis at baseline and 6-month follow-up. METHODS Non-inferiority, prospective, multicentre, cluster randomised controlled trial registered under the Unique Identifier: NCT01162070. VR-QOL and HR-QOL were assessed by the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ-25) and the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36). RESULTS At inclusion, 466 patients completed the VFQ-25. The mean composite score was 80.0 (±16.7). In multivariate analysis, higher age, female sex and insidious onset were significantly associated with lower QOL. At 6 months, 138 patients completed the VFQ-25, with a significantly higher mean composite score of 82.6 (±16.7). SF-36 mental component was 42.9 (±11.3) and physical component was 47.2 (±8.5) at inclusion (n=425). HR-QOL improvement at 6 months was not clinically significant. CONCLUSION QOL seems relatively well preserved in this cohort; only VR-QOL improved significantly at 6 months, especially in patients with low initial visual acuity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate features and outcomes of eyes with retinal vasculitis and intraocular inflammation (IOI) after intravitreal injection (IVI) of brolucizumab 6 mg/0.05 ml for treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration. DESIGN Retrospective case series. PARTICIPANTS Fifteen eyes from 12 patients identified from 10 United States centers. METHODS Review of patient demographics, ophthalmologic examination results, and retinal imaging findings. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Baseline and follow-up visual acuity (VA), prior anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections, clinical presentation, retinal findings, fluorescein angiography results, and treatment strategies. RESULTS The number of previous anti-VEGF IVIs ranged between 2 and 80 in the affected eye before switching to brolucizumab. Retinal vasculitis and IOI were diagnosed at a mean of 30 days after brolucizumab IVI. Mean VA before brolucizumab IVI was 0.426 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR; Snellen equivalent, 20/53) and VA at diagnosis of retinal vasculitis was 0.981 logMAR (Snellen equivalent, 20/191; range, 20/25-20/1600; P = 0.008). All affected eyes showed IOI with variable combinations of focal or elongated segmental sheathing and discontinuity of small and large retinal arteries, sclerotic arteries, regions of vascular nonperfusion, cotton-wool spots, Kyrieleis plaques, irregular venous caliber with dilated and sclerotic segments, perivenular hemorrhages, and foci of phlebitis. Fluorescein angiography revealed delayed retinal arterial filling, retinal vascular nonperfusion, and variable dye leakage from affected vessels and the optic nerve. Systemic evaluation for embolic causes was unrevealing in 2 patients, and 3 patients showed negative laboratory assessment for uveitis. Treatment consisted of various combinations of corticosteroids (systemic, intravitreal, and topical), and 2 eyes underwent vitrectomy without improvement in vision. After a mean follow-up of 25 days, mean VA was 0.833 logMAR (Snellen equivalent, 20/136), which was reduced compared with baseline (P = 0.033). CONCLUSIONS Retinal vasculitis and IOI after brolucizumab IVI are characterized by variable occlusion of large or small retinal arteries, or both, and perivenular abnormalities. It may span from peripheral vasculitis to occlusion of large retinal arteries around the optic nerve or macula with severe vision loss. A high index of suspicion is required because vitreous cells may obscure visualization of retinal details.

Abstract
Purpose: To assess the spectrum and treatment outcomes of inflammatory eye disease (IED) in subjects with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS).Methods: We conducted a single center retrospective chart review of 236 patients with HS seen for ophthalmic examination between 2013 and 2018.Results: Of 236 subjects with HS, 22 subjects (9.3%) were found to have IED. Seven of 22 subjects had more than one IED diagnosis. Anterior uveitis was the most common type of IED (40.9% of subjects with IED). Episcleritis, optic neuritis, keratitis, scleritis, intermediate and posterior uveitis, trochleitis, and dacryoadenitis were also observed. Of subjects with HS and IED, 59.1% did not have any other inflammatory or autoimmune disease that could explain the etiology of their IED. Eleven patients with IED were treated with systemic immunosuppression, with IED as the principal factor directing treatment in three patients.Conclusions: IED may be independently associated with HS and may benefit from systemic immunosuppression.

Abstract
Sex-based differences in susceptibility have been reported for a number of neovascular ocular diseases. We quantified corneal neovascularization, induced by superficial silver nitrate cautery, in male and female inbred albino Sprague-Dawley, inbred albino Fischer 344, outbred pigmented Hooded Wistar and inbred pigmented Dark Agouti rats of a range of ages. Corneal neovascular area was quantified on haematoxylin-stained corneal flatmounts by image analysis. Pro-and anti-angiogenic gene expression was measured early in the neovascular response by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Androgen and estrogen receptor expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Male rats from all strains, with or without ocular pigmentation, exhibited significantly greater corneal neovascular area than females: Sprague-Dawley males 43±12% (n = 8), females 25±5% (n = 12), p = 0.001; Fischer 344 males 38±10% (n = 12) females 27±8% (n = 8) p = 0.043; Hooded Wistar males 32±6% (n = 8) females 22±5% (n = 12) p = 0.002; Dark Agouti males 37±11% (n = 9) females 26±7% (n = 9) p = 0.015. Corneal vascular endothelial cells expressed neither androgen nor estrogen receptor. The expression in cornea post-cautery of Cox-2, Vegf-a and Vegf-r2 was significantly higher in males compared with females and Vegf-r1 was significantly lower in the cornea of males compared to females, p<0.001 for each comparison. These data suggest that male corneas are primed for angiogenesis through a signalling nexus involving Cox-2, Vegf-a, and Vegf receptors 1 and 2. Our findings re-enforce that pre-clinical animal models of human diseases should account for sex-based differences in their design and highlight the need for well characterized and reproducible pre-clinical studies that include both male and female animals.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship between self-reported uveitis and purported demographic and clinical risk factors, using an American adult population extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the years 2009 and 2010. This is a cross-sectional, population-based study using a sample of 5106 subjects between 20 and 69 years old. The main outcome for our study was the self-report of a diagnosis of uveitis. The demographic analysis included age, gender, and ethnicity. Potential predictors were having a diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), ulcerative colitis (UC), or Crohn’s disease (CD); a history of cigarette smoking; vitamin D deficiency; and different mental health measures. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted using RStudio. Results Of the 5106 participants, 27 had reported a diagnosis of uveitis, showing an adjusted prevalence of 5.4 per 1000 subjects (95% CI 3.4–8.5/1000). Increased age was associated with higher uveitis prevalence in the multivariate analysis (odds ratio [OR] = 1.04, 95% CI 1.01–1.07; p = 0.02). Positive smoking history was reported in 59.2% of patients. Multivariate analysis comparing smoking with the presence of uveitis showed an OR of 3.18 (95% CI 1.59–6.37; p = 0.003), adjusting for age and gender. Moreover, 11.1% of the participants from the uveitis group self-reported a diagnosis of AS and 11.7% informed a diagnosis of UC and 7.1% of CD. The ORs were of 16.64 (95% CI 3.64-76.09; p = 0.001), 11.34 (95% CI 2.69-47.88; p = 0.003), and 22.16 (95% CI 2.64-186.17; p = 0.007), respectively when compared with the non-uveitis group in the multivariate analysis. Conclusions Age, cigarette smoking, AS, UC, and CD are positively associated with self-reported uveitis. There is previous evidence that smoking and female gender are positive risk factors for uveitis, as well as evidence that HLA-B27-positive spondyloarthritides have the highest association with non-infectious uveitis in the adult population in North America and Europe. However, there are no prior studies that have utilized a representative US population-based sample to validate these findings. The present study supports smoking as a risk factor, which has clinical relevance since this is a modifiable habit.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the demographic and clinical profiles of uveitis patients seen at secondary and tertiary care centers in Turkey. METHODS A nationwide web-based registry of patients with uveitis was initiated in November 2008. We analyzed data from a single baseline registry-enrollment visit. RESULTS In 33 centers, 6967 eyes of 4863 consecutive patients were registered. The mean age at presentation was 36.6 ± 15.7 (1-92) years; 51.3% were male. Behçet disease was the leading diagnosis (24.9%), followed by ankylosing spondylitis and/or HLA-B27-associated anterior uveitis (9.7%), toxoplasmosis (7.1%), Fuchs uveitis (6.3%), and presumed herpetic anterior uveitis (6.0%). Visual acuity was 0.1 or worse in 22% of eyes. The most common ocular complications were posterior synechiae (16.2%) and cataract formation (16.2%). CONCLUSIONS Behçet disease is still the most common non-infectious etiology in Turkish uveitis patients, while ocular toxoplasmosis and herpetic anterior uveitis are the most common infectious uveitic entities.

Abstract
Uveitides can be due to non-infectious and infectious etiologies. It has been observed that there is a gender difference with a greater preponderance of non-infectious uveitis in women than in men. This review will describe both non-infectious and infectious uveitides and describes some of the current autoimmune mechanisms thought to be underlying the gender difference. It will specifically look at non-infectious uveitides with systemic involvement including juvenile idiopathic arthritis, spondyloarthopathies, sarcoidosis, Behçet’s disease, and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease and at uveitides without systemic involvement including sympathetic ophthalmia, birdshot chorioretinitis, and the white dot syndromes. Infectious uveitides like acute retinal necrosis, progressive outer retinal necrosis, and cytomegalovirus mediated uveitis will be mentioned. Different uveitides with female- or male- predominance are presented and discussed.
