Abstract
Berries are not only appreciated for their distinctive taste and flavor, but they are also highly valued for their nutritional and health-promoting properties. This study aimed to develop appealing new gluten-free sponge cakes (GFS) enriched with bioactive phytochemicals using berry powders. Freeze-dried powders of raspberry (R), blackberry (B), and blueberry (L) were used to replace 2 % of the starch in the experimental GFS formulation. This study analyzed the profile and content of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, and assessed the antiglycation activity using spectrophotometric methods. Additionally, the color and textural parameters, as well as consumer preferences for the GFS, were evaluated. The application of berry powders in the experimental formulation significantly increased (p < 0.05) the content of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and anthocyanins in all the berry-enriched sponge cakes, although the degree of increase varied, depending on the berry used. All the berry-enriched sponge cakes acquired a pleasant reddish tint, with the raspberry sponge cake (GFR) receiving the highest scores for sensory attractiveness. However, the textural parameters (hardness, gumminess, and chewiness) of all the berry-enriched sponge cakes were negatively affected compared to the control. These findings indicate that incorporating berry powders into GFS formulations can create a visually appealing and tasty option for health-conscious consumers, particularly those with dietary restrictions such as celiac disease.

Abstract
This work describes a drug delivery system (DDS) based on the therapeutic anti-inflammatory efficacy of saponin gallate (SG), a combination of gallic acid and saponin, chemically conjugated via an ester linkage. This formulation was loaded onto a biocompatible gadolinium-doped zinc-gallium-layered double hydroxide (Zn/Ga@Gd-LDH) nanocarrier. FT-IR, XRD, SEM, and HPLC were used to characterize the synthesized materials. UV-visible spectroscopy was employed to investigate the drug release from SG-Zn/Ga@Gd-LDH at an optimized temperature (45 °C) and pH (5). The kinetic release behavior of SG-Zn/Ga@Gd-LDH nanoparticles suggested that the first-order kinetic model was the most appropriate for the release profile. The regression value (R2) of 0.96614 indicated an optimal and controlled release for therapeutic effectiveness and minimal adverse effects over 54 h. The in vitro and in vivo models confirmed that drug-loaded nanocarriers exhibited antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Western blotting analysis suggested that SG-Zn/Ga@Gd-LDH abrogates the anti-inflammatory properties by halting the phosphorylation of pro-inflammatory proteins p-p65 and decreasing CRP levels involved in the NF-κB pathway. SG-Zn/Ga@Gd-LDH exhibited an anti-inflammatory effect by reducing the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. SG-Zn/Ga@Gd-LDH treatment against an acute CCl4-induced liver injury model showed anti-inflammatory potential in histological parameters' study. Radiolabeling of the drug saponin gallate with 99mTc was carried out to determine its in vivo biodistribution. The chromatographic results indicated promising radiolabeling of up to 90% percentages. SPECT-CT imaging and ex vivo gamma counting in Wistar rats revealed different clearance rates of nanoparticles, aiding in the evaluation of the drug delivery nanosystem. The designed system also demonstrated antioxidant potential due to the SG compound having IC50 127.45 μg/mL free radical scavenging activity. Ga@Gd-LDH showed a tumor-suppressing ability of 79.89 ± 3.91% for viable cells against breast cancer MCF-7 cells. The developed formulation could thus be a conducive strategy against inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
The diameter, length, and shape of bacteria are maintained with such high fidelity that these parameters are classically used as metrics in the distinction of bacterial species. Increasing evidence indicates that bacteria transiently shift their shapes into distinctive morphologies in response to environmental changes. Elongation of bacterial length into a filamentous shape provides unique survival advantages for many bacterial species. Analysis of 42 clinical isolates of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) revealed that filamentation to host-derived antimicrobials is a conserved phenotype. Therefore, we hypothesize that filamentation represents a conserved mechanism of pathogenic bacterial persistence that can be targeted for narrow-spectrum, anti-virulence therapies. We demonstrate that cranberries prevent SulA-mediated filamentation of UPEC. Furthermore, we identify multiple fractions of cranberries that retain anti-filamentation properties. These studies provide mechanistic insight into the clinical efficacy of cranberry for patients with recurrent urinary tract infections. Inhibition of filamentation represents a novel approach to promote bacterial pathogen susceptibility to immune and antibiotic-mediated clearance to attenuate disease.

Abstract
This study comprehensively examined the effects of irrigation levels and foliar ABA (absisic acid) applications on the biochemical structure of strawberries. ABA treatments significantly increased the levels of total acid (TA), chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, ellagic acid, ascorbic acid, sucrose, glucose, fructose, and total soluble solids (TSS), all of which are important for fruit quality. Additionally, 50 % deficit irrigation level (Ir50) increased TSS content by 17 %, fructose and glucose by 18 %, sucrose by 11 %, total phenolic content by 27 %, and total antioxidant content by 7 % compared to the full irrigation (Ir100). ABA treatments with Ir50 practices significantly enhanced the concentrations of TA, syringrid acid, ellagic acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, TSS, fructose, and glucose, which may contribute to the health consciousness of consumers. This study, therefore, highlights the intricate interactions of ABA treatments and irrigation regarding the biochemical profiles of fruits.

Abstract
Rubus imperialis Chum. Schl. (Rosaceae) is used in traditional medicine as a remedy to treat diabetes and other diseases. However, there are reports that the extract of this plant and others of the Rubus genus may produce cellular and/or genetic toxicity. Niga-ichigoside F1 (NIF1) and 2β,3β-19α-trihydroxyursolic acid (2B) are major compounds found in R. imperialis extract known to exert pharmacological effects which may be responsible for the observed toxicity. Thus, this study was aimed to examine the cytogenotoxic potential of NIF1 and 2B in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) following acute exposure. Cytotoxicity was determined by trypan blue staining and genotoxicity by micronucleus and comet assays. Data obtained showed that both compounds, at concentrations ranging from 0.1 and 20 µg/ml, did not markedly affect cell viability. In addition, genetic toxicity testing (comet assay) detected no evidence of DNA damage or chromosomal mutations by the micronucleus test. Under these experimental conditions and considering that both compounds exhibit biological effects at low concentrations, it may be concluded that NIF1 and 2B did not induce cytogenotoxic effects in primary human PBMC.

Abstract
This study evaluated the structural, physicochemical, and functional characteristics of blueberry residue dietary fiber (DF) extracted by wet ball milling (WB) and cross-linking (C) treatments. The particle size of WB-DF showed a significant decreasing trend (p ≤ 0.05) compared to that of C-DF and blueberry residue. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that WB treatment unfolded the flaky structure of DF and caused more pores to occur. The results showed that the modifications of WB increased the release of active groups and enhanced the hydration and adsorption capacities. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed the highest crystallinity observed for C-DF, resulting in the increased thermal stability of C-DF. The molar ratios of monosaccharides were also influenced by different modification techniques. In addition, WB-DF showed the lowest ζ-potential and highest viscosity among all samples. Conclusively, DF extracted by WB treatment exhibited remarkable application potential in the functional food industry.

Abstract
Introduction: Overweight and obesity are major public health concerns, often leading to increased cardiovascular risk. Methods: This eight-week interventional study examined whether regular consumption of two natural bilberry products could improve body composition and lipid profiles in overweight/obese women. A total of 30 participants (aged 50-60 years) were assigned to consume either 125 mL/day of 100% bilberry juice or 10 g/day of 100% bilberry fibre, while maintaining their habitual diets and lifestyles. Results: Although no significant changes were found in anthropometric parameters or blood pressure in either group, both interventions reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Surprisingly, total cholesterol (TC) levels rose in the bilberry juice group (from 6.41 ± 1.23 mmol/L to 6.94 ± 1.30 mmol/L (p < 0.001)), and in the fibre group (from 6.06 ± 1.39 mmol/L to 6.43 ± 1.05 mmol/L (p = 0.046)), likely due to elevated HDL-C (p < 0.001) overshadowing the drop in LDL-C (p < 0.05). Triglyceride (TG) levels did not change significantly and were still within the reference range. Conclusions: Notably, the bilberry juice group experienced a significant reduction in atherogenic small dense LDL (sdLDL) subfractions, suggesting a favourable shift in cardiovascular risk factors. These findings highlight the potential of bilberry-based products as a supportive strategy for improving lipid profiles in overweight/obese women.

Abstract
Raspberries (Rubus idaeus L.) are valued as both a food source and a medicinal plant, with expanding production driven by premium market demand. Primocane varieties, such as "Regina" are prized for their ability to produce two harvests per year, offering extended availability into autumn and providing significant commercial benefit. Their high polyphenol content, particularly in anthocyanins and flavonoids, contributes to antioxidant and health properties. However, their extraction and quantification are influenced by factors such as genetic variability, environmental conditions, fruit maturity, storage, and processing techniques. This study analyzed the metabolic profiles of "Regina" raspberries harvested in June (RiJ) and September (RiS). Out of 748 compounds listed in the Phenol-Explorer database, 377 metabolites were identified and categorized. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed significant differences between harvests, with RiS samples showing higher concentrations of most flavonoid and non-flavonoid compounds. Heatmap and volcano plot analyses confirmed that significant metabolites were enriched in RiS samples. Correspondingly, antioxidant capacity, measured via ABTS and FRAP assays, was higher in RiS raspberries. These findings highlight the metabolic and antioxidant differences between harvest periods and lay the groundwork for understanding how these compounds could be modulated through the application of postharvest treatments.

Abstract
The total soluble phenolic content (TSPC), decomposition profiles and kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of hydrophilic bioactive extracts from Randia monantha (RME), Coccoloba uvifera (CUE) and Vaccinium corymbosum (VCE) fruits were investigated. The TSPC was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The decomposition profiles of the extracts were obtained via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Then, the kinetic parameters (preexponential factor, A, and activation energy, Ea) and thermodynamic parameters (enthalpy, ΔH; entropy, ΔS; and free Gibbs energy, ΔG) of each stage of decomposition were obtained via the Coats-Redfern method. The highest TSPC was shown for RME extract, followed by VCE and CUE extracts due to the plant material. The thermal analyses showed that RME and VCE extracts had three mass loss events, and the CUE extract had only two. Moreover, RME exhibits higher decomposition temperatures. These differences in the thermal profile were attributed to the TSPC concentration in the extracts. Compared with the RME and VCE extracts, the CUE extract presented the lowest values of Ea, A, ΔH, and ΔS due to the low TSPC. On the contrary, all extracts presented high ΔG values in the final stage of the thermal process. Notably, the RME extract demonstrated the highest values, followed by the VCE and CUE extracts. The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters revealed that the thermal decomposition of the extracts was an endothermic process. This would allow for adaptation processing conditions or the implementation of encapsulation technologies that avoid the degradation of the extracts.

Abstract
The risk of glycolipid metabolic disorders (GLMDs)-which encompass type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and atherosclerosis--is rising gradually and posing challenges to health care. With the popularity of healthy lifestyles, anthocyanin-rich berries have emerged as a potential dietary intervention. This review uses bibliometric analysis to synthesize current research on the role of anthocyanins in relieving GLMDs. Our examination of the literature underscores the diverse mechanisms by which anthocyanins exert their beneficial effects, including their intricate bioactivity and functional signaling pathways. The insights gleaned from anthocyanin research offer a promising avenue for harnessing the power of nature to support metabolic health and pave the way for integration into clinical strategies for GLMD management.

Abstract
Background: Honey is a product of the hive elaborated by the bees of the species Apis mellifera. As well as Pistacia lentiscus, is a species widely used in traditional medicine that is part of a large family of Anacardiaceae. Aims: To determine the biological properties including the antioxidant activity of the mixture of the extract of P. lentiscus berries associated with honey at different concentrations (0.5%, 2%, 4%, 8% and 12%). Methods: Physicochemical parameters and phenolic compound amounts. The antioxidant activities (reducing power, FRAP, CUPRAC, TAC, DPPH, ABTS, and ferrozine) were also tested. Results: According to the physico-chemical parameters, the honey and the mixture analyzed are in conformity with the international standards. The results of the antioxidant assay gave a significant content of total phenolic compounds for the H/DP mixtures, the sample of honey alone analyzed exerts a weak antioxidant activity compared to the two mixtures made. Conclusion: The honey and Pistacia compound constitute an important source of antioxidants which intensifies very significantly the antioxidant activity of the blend.

Abstract
Blackberries are seasonal berries that are processed into various products leaving a large amount of residues after processing, and therefore the most effective ways of utilising the residues need to be evaluated. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different extraction methods on the chemical content of blackberry pomace extracts from different cultivars and their effect on the viability of the Caco-2 colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line and CCD-18Co normal colon fibroblast cancer cells. Blackberry pomace from berries of the cultivars 'Polar', 'Orkan', and 'Brzezina' was extracted by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and a combination of these two extraction methods (MAE+UAE). The phenolic profile and the amount of organic acids and sugars were detected by HPLC. The spectrophotometric method was used to determine the amount of total phenolics, total flavonoids, and total anthocyanins. The cytotoxicity of the extracts was measured by the MTT assay. The chemical content of the extracts depends on the blackberry cultivar, the extraction method, and its interaction. Only the DPPH antioxidant activity did not depend on these factors and had no statistically significant differences between the different extracts. The extracts at a concentration of 5.0% increased the growth of both cancer cells, while the extracts at 1% and 2.5%, depending on the cultivar, reduced the growth of these cells. The MAE and UAE extracts of the 'Orkan' cultivar at concentrations of 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5% best inhibited the viability of Caco-2 cells. The extracts inhibited the growth of the Caco-2 cell line better than CCD-18Co normal colon fibroblasts.

Abstract
The circular economy is gaining attention around the world as a sustainable approach to tackling environmental problems, promoting more responsible management of resources. The aim of this work is the valorization of grape pomace as a waste product of agrifood chain. We prepared decoction (DC), ultrasound-assisted and microwave-assisted extracts (UAE and MAE respectively) of grape pomace, determining their phytochemical profile (using HPLC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS), antioxidant activity and enzyme inhibitory effects. Then, the results were compared with those of raisins and several edible berries already present in the market. Grape pomace extracts presented the highest total phenolic content (62-68 mg gallic acid equivalents/g; mg GAE/g), whereas the concentrations in the other berries were 4-43 mg GAE/g. These results were in agreement with the higher antioxidant activity and tyrosinase inhibition observed in grape pomace compared with the other berries, except for the metal chelating activity. The main compounds in grape pomace extracts were flavonoids (particularly quercetin glycosides), followed by organic acids (citric, isocitric and gallic acids). These results open new perspectives in the development of food supplements and nutraceuticals based on grape pomace extracts.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Gardeniae Fructus (GF) has been widely used as both food and medicinal purposes for thousands of years, but their antioxidant properties and potential metabolite biomarkers remain unclear. Methods: The purposes of this study were to examine antioxidant activities of 21 GF varieties from different geographical origins in China and identify potential biomarkers of antioxidant properties using an untargeted LC-MS-based metabolomics approach. Results: The results demonstrate that metabolomics had the ability to trace the geographical origins of GF. We found that antioxidant activities varied with different varieties of GF, which was dependent on their chemical compositions. The key chemical categories were obtained as the primary contributors of the antioxidant activity, including prenol lipids, flavonoids, coumarins and derivatives, as well as steroids and steroid derivatives. In addition, adouetine Y, coagulin R 3-glucoside and epicatechin 3-glucoside were identified as potential biomarkers for the antioxidant activity of GF. Conclusions: Therefore, our study sheds light on the metabolic characteristics and biomarkers of the antioxidant properties of GF, contributing to the selection and cultivation of a high antioxidant variety.

Abstract
Fruits are essential components of the human diet, valued for their diverse bioactive compounds with potential health-promoting properties. This study focuses on three cold-hardy Actinidia species, namely A. arguta, A. kolomikta, and A. polygama, examining their polyphenolic content, antioxidant/antiradical activities, scavenging capacity and effects on intestinal cell viability (Caco-2 and HT29-MTX). A comprehensive profile of their phenolic compounds was identified, in descending order of total polyphenol content: A. kolomikta > A. arguta > A. polygama. Across species, 16 phenolic acids, 2 flavanols, 2 flavanones, 11 flavonols, and 3 flavones were quantified, with caffeine as a prominent compound. A. kolomikta achieved the highest antioxidant activity, with 'Vitakola' cultivar showing almost double the antioxidant activity compared to 'Tallinn' and 'Pozdni'. By contrast, A. arguta 'Geneva' and A. polygama 'Pomarancheva' exhibited significantly lower activity in both FRAP and DPPH assays. Notably, A. kolomikta cultivars showed distinct radical-scavenging capacities, particularly for superoxide, wherein 'Tallinn' and 'Pozdni' achieved the highest values. Cell viability tests on Caco-2 and HT29-MTX cells revealed a dose-dependent reduction in viability, notably stronger in Caco-2 cells. Overall, this study underscores the therapeutic potential of Actinidia species.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The diverse polyphenolic components present in these berries are responsible for their functional properties in human health. Hence, there is an increasing demand for research in berry bioactive components to understand the mechanism of action in alleviating and preventing diseases. Therefore, in this last part-III of the review series, mulberry, raspberry, salmonberry, Saskatoonberry, and strawberry are discussed in terms of their bioactive components and corresponding substantial health benefits. RECENT FINDINGS The aforementioned berries provide essential and nonessential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and various phenolic compounds. Similar to the other reported berries, these berries possess good antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and neuroprotective effects. The bioactive components present in the berries are crucial for the overall well-being of humans and hence consumption of berries mentioned in part-III as well as part-I and part-II possesses substantial health benefits, particularly cognitive and cardio health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Berries are a great source of fiber, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and beneficial secondary metabolites (polyphenols). Various phytochemicals present in berries (glycosidic-linked flavonoids, anthocyanins, etc.) provide potential health benefits to consumers. Berries are known as high antioxidant food which provides certain cellular and molecular protection thereby lower rates of obesity and chronic disease risk. Molecular-level mechanisms protect a cell, while cellular mechanism considers all molecular units. For example, polyphenols found in blueberries have the potential to significantly reduce adipogenesis. Therefore, in continuation with part I, this review part II summarizes recent updates on the nutritional composition and biological activities of caperberry, chokeberry, cloudberry, cranberry, elderberry, gooseberry, goji berry, and lingonberry. RECENT FINDINGS These berries contain higher amounts of dietary fiber, protein, polyphenols, vitamins, minerals, and lipids. Besides, their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, these berries are reported for eye health, brain health, cardiovascular health, anti-diabetic, etc. The consumption of a summarized group of berries could be more beneficial for eye health, mental health, and metabolic health thereby enhancing the well-being of the consumers.

Abstract
Red raspberries, valued for their nutrients and bioactive compounds, have broad uses in processing and healthy products. However, limited comprehensive research focused on the comparison of phenolic compounds of red raspberry, especially species cultivated in Northeast China, has been reported. This study aimed to conduct a thorough investigation of 24 red raspberry varieties in Northeast China for the first time, evaluating their phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacities. The results showed that 'DNS1' had the highest total phenolic content (TPC), 'Willamette' had the highest total flavonoid content (TFC), and 'Boyne' had the highest total anthocyanin content (TAC). Phenolic compounds in red raspberries were predominantly found in esterified form, while glycosylated phenolics should not be overlooked. Chlorogenic acid, cryptochlorogenic acid, ellagic acid, and arbutin were the main phenolic compounds, and the distribution of their contents varied between varieties. The antioxidant activity in the red raspberry had a close association with the content of phenolic compounds. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities were higher in samples from 'DNS1', 'Boyne', 'Beijing10', 'DNS5', and 'Willamette' varieties. These varieties should be given priority in breeding programs that aim to boost the utility and bioactive profile of red raspberries. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Red raspberry is becoming a desirable commercially grown fruit species and is viewed as a new functional food. In this context, this research offers strong support for confirming the quality of 24 varieties of red raspberry and plays a critical role in the food industry. It also indicates the potential sources of superior varieties of red raspberry, which are advantageous for growers and consumers in search of high-quality red raspberry varieties.

Abstract
Obesity and its associated inflammatory state pose a significant health burden. Anthocyanins, bioactive compounds found in fruits and vegetables, have garnered interest in their potential to attenuate these conditions. Understanding the dose-dependent response of anthocyanins is essential for optimizing their therapeutic potential in preventing and managing obesity. This comprehensive review explores the current knowledge on the dose-dependent effects of anthocyanins on obesity in both human and animal models, analyzing the structure and mechanism of absorption of these compounds. The article also highlights the diverse mechanisms underlying anthocyanin action, the symbiosis between anthocyanins and gut microbiota impacting metabolite production, influencing diverse health outcomes, modulating cytokines, and activating anti-inflammatory pathways. Additionally, their impact on energy metabolism and lipid regulation is discussed, highlighting potential contributions to weight management through AMPK and PPARγ pathways. Despite promising results, dose-dependent effects are fundamental considerations, with some studies indicating less favorable outcomes at higher doses. Future research should focus on optimizing dosages, accounting for individual responses, and translating findings into effective clinical applications for obesity management.

Abstract
This study aimed to verify whether the combined application of jabuticaba and strawberry extracts at five different concentrations could enhance oxidative stability and microbiological quality of pork burgers over 12 days of storage at 4 °C. The anthocyanins in these extracts were quantified by HPLC-DAD and identified by LC-MS/MS. Pelargonidin-3-glucoside was highlighted as the predominant anthocyanin in jabuticaba extract, while cyanidin-3-glucoside was the main constituent in strawberry extract. The extracts did not exhibit antimicrobial activity but demonstrated significant antioxidant activity. The treatment with the 0.75:0.25 (jabuticaba:strawberry extract) level showed a pH evolution during storage similar to the control (without extract). Additionally, the combination of jabuticaba and strawberry extracts, particularly at the 75:25 levels, indicated lower TBARS values, characterized by the decreased presence of rancid aroma at the end of the storage period. This extract combination level also preserved the burgers' color, evidenced by the lower ΔE values during storage.

Abstract
The popularity of natural products for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) differs considerably between countries. Here we discuss the clinical evidence for efficacy in two indications, male LUTS suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia and urinary tract infections, and the mechanistic evidence from experimental studies. Most evidence for male LUTS is based on extracts from saw palmetto berries, stinging nettle roots, and pumpkin seeds, whereas most evidence for urinary tract infection is available for European golden rod and combined preparations although this field appears more fragmented with regard to extract sources. Based on differences in sample collection and extraction, extracts from the same plants are likely to exhibit at least quantitative differences in potential active ingredients, which makes extrapolation of findings with one extract to those of others potentially difficult. While only limited information is available for most individual extracts, some extracts have been compared to placebo and/or active controls in adequately powered trials.

Abstract
Dietary intake of Vaccinium berries has demonstrated significant potential in preventing many risk factors associated with metabolic syndromes in the human population. In recent years, a multitude of research has shown the role of antioxidants derived from Vaccinium berries on chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Several studies have also investigated the effect of Vaccinium berry consumption on their ability to modulate the risk factors associated with oxidative stress, vascular function, inflammation, and lipid metabolism. Regarding cancer, studies showed that the consumption of berries reduces inflammation, inhibits angiogenesis, protects against DNA damage within the cell, and controls apoptosis and proliferation rates in malignant tumours. However, which components are responsible for the health benefits is still unclear. Reports show that whole berry consumption usually confers positive effects on human health, and the health-promoting potentials are likely due to the presence of polyphenols with antioxidant activities. Among these polyphenols, various Vaccinium berry species have been reported to contain anthocyanins and flavonoids. These two polyphenolic compounds are known to have higher antioxidant activity and are beneficial for human health. There are now several studies and human clinical trials documenting the beneficial effects of Vaccinium berries, and these findings suggest that they may be promising for preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases. This review focuses primarily on dietary Vaccinium berries consumption effects on human health and their potential role as therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Aronia, haskap, and goji berries are characterized by their high content of bioactive compounds and their beneficial health properties as well as their resistance to harsh agronomic conditions. In this work, cultivars of these species growing in a mountainous region of central-western Spain were characterized by analyzing physicochemical parameters and bioactive compounds. Goji fruits showed the highest total soluble solid content and the lowest acidity values. The sugar profile suggested that goji cultivars will have a higher sweetness due to higher fructose and glucose content. However, aronia cultivars will be the least sweet due to their high sorbitol content. The total organic acid content was much higher in aronia and haskap than in goji fruits, and the profile varied according to species. The total phenolic content was significantly higher in aronia fruits. A total of 15 phenolic compounds were detected, with anthocyanins being predominant in aronia and haskap berries; however, they were not detected in goji fruits. Nevertheless, carotenoid compounds were found in goji berries and not detected in aronia and haskap fruits. Aronia fruits showed the highest antioxidant capacity compared to haskap and goji fruits. The PCA analysis classified the samples to determine which parameters have the greatest influence.

Abstract
This work introduces a novel method of recovering bioactive berry natural products (BNPs) using solid phase extraction with metal-organic frameworks (MOF-SPE). Two pyrene-based MOFs with different structural topologies, Al-PyrMOF and Zr-NU-1000, were evaluated for their ability to capture and desorb BNPs, including ellagic acid, quercetin, gallic acid, and p-coumaric acid. Time-dependent BNP uptake via dispersive SPE revealed that NU-1000 outperformed Al-PyrMOF in capturing all BNPs. Our findings show NU-1000 demonstrated a higher and more consistent BNP capture profile, achieving over 90 % capture of all BNPs within 36 h, with only a 9 % variation between the most and least effectively captured BNPs. In contrast, Al-PyrMOF, displayed a staggered uptake profile, with a significant 53 % difference in capture efficiency between the most and least effectively captured BNP. However, when a BNP mixture was used at a loading concentration of 50 μg/mL, Al-PyrMOF outperformed NU-1000, capturing over 70 % of all BNPs. Al-PyrMOF also exhibited improved BNP recovery, with a minimum of two-fold greater amount recovered for all BNPs. Further testing with a BNP mixture at a concentration of 15 μg/mL demonstrated that Al-PyrMOF efficiently concentrated all BNPs, achieving a maximum extraction factor of 2.71 observed for quercetin. These findings highlight the use of Al-PyrMOF as a MOF-SPE sorbent for recovering bioactive BNPs.

Abstract
In this study, the production of functional beverages of Zuccagnia punctata Cav. (jarilla), a native medicinal plant from Argentina, and Vaccinium corymbosum (blueberry), with lemon honey as a sweetener, is described. The beverage was formulated by using jarilla extract and blueberry juice with maltodextrin as an encapsulant material. The beverage was dried by both spray-drying and freeze-drying. Both beverages showed high water solubility with adequate features for handling, transport, and storage. The chromatic parameters indicate tones of mauve. Both the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were retained after being spray-dried (92 and 100%, respectively). The anthocyanins were less stable under spray-dried conditions (58% retained). Both beverages showed high scavenger capacity on ABTS•+, HO•, and H2O2 (SC50 between 3.56 and 36.90 µg GAE/mL) and exhibited in vitro inhibitor potential of α-glucosidase, α-amylase, and lipase activities (IC50 of between 2.97 and 27.19 µg GAE/mL). The powdered beverage obtained by spray-drying presented the greatest preference in sensory tests. The beverages were neither toxic nor mutagenic in the concentration range with biological activity. During short-term storage, both beverages showed stability. The results obtained would support the use of a powdered beverage made from an Argentinean native plant and blueberries as a functional food.

Abstract
Background The Andean blackberry (Rubus glaucus Benth), locally known as "Mora de Castilla," is a high-altitude fruit rich in phytochemicals, mainly anthocyanins, with potent antioxidant properties. Although its chemical composition has been studied, the influence of altitude on its phytochemical profile and antioxidant capacity is still unclear. This research aimed to investigate the effects of development stages and altitude on the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity of this fruit. Methods Andean blackberry fruits were collected at different altitudes and development stages in the central Andean region of Ecuador. An hydroalcoholic extraction was used to quantify the compounds and determine the total antioxidant activity, while solid phase extraction (SPE) was performed to separate anthocyanins from other compounds. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (HPLC-DAD/ESI-MSn) was used to identify anthocyanin and non-anthocyanin phenols, while total antioxidant capacity, total polyphenols, total flavonoid content, and total anthocyanin content were quantified spectrophotometrically. Results Flavonols and anthocyanins constitute the majority of the flavonoids identified in the Andean blackberry extracts, both in terms of peak areas and number of identified compounds, followed by ellagic and gallic acid derivatives, as well as phenolic acids, mainly hydroxycinnamic acids. Quercetin was identified as the predominant flavonol in unripe berries, where anthocyanins were not significantly present. On the contrary, in ripe berries, cyanidin and its glycosides stood out as the main anthocyanins and predominant compounds. We observed that in the early stages of ripening, the total polyphenol content predominates in the berries and is mainly responsible for their antioxidant capacity. However, as the fruit ripens, the total anthocyanin content increases, becoming the most prominent bioactive compounds in fully ripe berries. Conclusion The results suggest that higher altitude environmental conditions may improve the composition, concentration of phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity of Andean blackberries. Overall, our findings highlight the high functional value of this fruit, supporting its health-protective effects when consumed regularly, either as fresh fruit or in nutraceutical form.

Abstract
In this study, changes in the basic composition and structural characterisation of water-soluble pectin (WSP), homogalacturonan (HG) and rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) from pomegranate peel were investigated after high-pressure-homogenisation (HPH) at 50 MPa and 300 MPa. The interactions between three pectin and anthocyanin (ACN) complex were also studied. The three pectin fractions were mainly composed of galacturonic acid (34.95%-87.69%), all with low degrees of methyl-esterification ≤41.20%. HPH at 300 MPa increased the binding ratios of ACN to three pectin fractions by 34.22%-34.59%. Changes in the structural characterisation results of pectin confirmed that the depolymerisation and breakdown of the side chains of pectin after HPH promoted electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interaction between pectin and ACN. Correspondingly, the thermal and storage stabilities of ACN in the complex was boosted after HPH at 300 MPa. This study provides insights into the interaction between pectin and ACN under HPH.

Abstract
The integrity of the genome is under constant threat from both endogenous and exogenous factors that induce oxidative stress and accelerate ageing. The demand for natural and organic cosmetics is rising due to the harmful effects of synthetic genotoxic agents on human health and the environment. Elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.), a fruit rich in bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, has demonstrated significant antioxidant properties. This study aimed to evaluate elderberry extract's chemical characterization and biological activities in peripheral blood mononuclear cells exposed to streptonigrin and H2O2, both known for causing DNA damage. The antigenotoxic evaluation and antioxidant assays (ABTS and DPPH) were conducted to assess its biological properties. Using the Comet assay enhanced with formamidopyrimidine-DNA glycosylase (Fpg) to detect oxidized purines, we found that elderberry extract significantly reduced DNA damage. These findings suggest that elderberry has potential as a natural alternative to synthetic ingredients in cosmetics, offering protective benefits against DNA damage and contributing to anti-ageing and skin health.

Abstract
Berries represent healthy dietary options and contain bioactive compounds associated with a decreased risk of diseases. Despite representing healthy food choices, these products can be contaminated by pathogenic microorganisms, including parasites. Among foodborne parasites, Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium parvum, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Toxoplasma gondii, and Echinococcus multilocularis are of significant public health importance and have been recently detected in fresh berries in Europe, including Italy. Berries can be purchased fresh or frozen, and it is worrying that even frozen berries could represent a risk for the consumer. In fact, several parasites can resist freezing temperatures and have been responsible for outbreaks of infection. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of G. duodenalis, C. parvum, C. cayetanensis, T. gondii, and E. multilocularis in frozen berries with simplex and multiplex real-time PCR protocols. A total of 108 packages of mixed frozen berries were bought from supermarkets located in a south-eastern region of Italy. The samples were tested using two simplex real-time PCR protocols targeting C. parvum and G. duodenalis, respectively, and a multiplex real-time PCR targeting C. cayetanensis, T. gondii, and E. multilocularis. None of the investigated parasites were detected in the frozen berry samples tested. This research topic is still unexplored and of great current interest. These results represent a first attempt to investigate parasitic contamination of frozen berries sold on the Italian market, but further large-scale surveys are required.

Abstract
1. Recent research has shown that encapsulated raspberry powder (RP) is a natural colourant for foodstuffs. However, no research has been conducted on its use in chicken nuggets. In addition, the effect of RP on products with and without phosphate addition is unknown. This study assessed the effects of RP (control, 0.5%, 1.0%) and phosphate (0.0%, 0.3%) on the pH and colour quality properties of nuggets.2. In the production of RP, red raspberry (Rubus ideaus L.) juices were encapsulated using maltodextrin in a spray-dryer. Antioxidant activity, total anthocyanin, total phenolics, colour, moisture and pH analyses of the RP were performed.3. Nuggets were packaged in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP; 40%CO2 + 60%N2) and were stored at 2.0 ± 0.5°C for 120 d. The pH and external and internal surface colour (L*, a*, b*, C* and h) values were measured on d 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 and 120 of storage.4. The addition of phosphate increased the pH in the samples, while these decreased with the addition of RP (p < 0.05). During storage, the highest pH were seen in the phosphate samples and the lowest in the nuggets with 1.0% RP addition (p < 0.05).5. With the addition of phosphate, the external surface a* value of nuggets increased (p < 0.05). Depending on the level of RP added to the nuggets, the external surface L* value decreased and a* and b* values increased (p < 0.05). After d 30 of storage, the a* value increased in the samples with RP addition and this increase was higher in the with phosphate nuggets (p < 0.05).6. The internal surface a* value increased with the addition of RP during nugget production (p < 0.05). The increase in a* value was greater in samples with added phosphate (p < 0.05). During storage, the highest a* values were seen in nuggets treated with phosphate + 0.1% RP (p < 0.05). The addition of RP to chicken nugget emulsion improved redness, colour stability and shelf life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In this study, the impacts of various processing parameters on the quality and consumer satisfaction of dragon fruit beverages were investigated in order to establish an informative framework for the manufacturing of commercial dragon fruit beverages, focusing on health benefits and safety for consumers, and sensory appeal of the products. METHODS This study employed various analytical methods to quantify some important phytochemical compounds in dragon fruit juice such as total and reducing sugars, vitamin C, betacyanins, anthocyanins, polyphenol, and so forth. This study also employed the Box-Behnken response surface experimental design to optimize various processing parameters for quality and consumer satisfaction, which include enzymatic pectin hydrolysis parameters and formulation for dragon fruit energy drink. RESULTS The results from this study indicated a causal relationship between geological origin and some important characteristics of dragon fruit juice, emphasizing the need to track the source of fruits to ensure consistent quality of juice products. This study also systematically determined the impacts of various enzymatic hydrolysis, thermal sterilization, and formulation parameters on both nutrition content and sensory aspects of dragon fruit beverages, while also successfully optimized these parameters for the best outcomes. CONCLUSION This study had successfully achieved the objective of establishing a valuable framework for the manufacturing of commercial dragon fruit beverages, focusing on health benefits and safety for consumers, and sensory appeal of the products.

Abstract
Plastic food packaging, with its harmful migration of microplastics and nanoplastics into food, presents significant ecological imbalance and human health risks. In this regard, using food and agricultural byproducts as packaging materials reduces environmental and economic concerns and supports their sustainable management. Herein, cellulosic residue from corncob was employed as a renewable source for developing biodegradable packaging films. It was solubilized in ZnCl2 solution, crosslinked with Ca2+ ions, and plasticized with sorbitol to form films and used to improve the shelf-life of raspberries. The optimized film possesses water vapor permeability, tensile strength, and elongation at break of 1.8(4) x10-10 g-1 s-1 Pa-1, 4.7(1) MPa, and 15.4(7)%, respectively. It displays UV-blocking and antioxidant properties and biodegrades within 29 days at 24% soil moisture. It preserves raspberries for 7 and 5 more days at room temperature and refrigeration conditions, respectively, compared to polystyrene film. Overall, more value addition could be envisioned from agricultural residues to minimize post-harvest losses and food waste through biodegradable packaging, which also aids in mitigating plastic perils.

Abstract
Consumer interest in healthier meat products has grown in recent years. Therefore, the use of plant powders as natural preservatives in the composition of pork and beef products could be an alternative to traditional meat products. This study aimed to assess the effect of different powders, such as blackcurrant, chokeberry, rowan berries, apple, tomato, garlic, and rhubarb, on the microbial growth dynamics in minced pork and beef during refrigerated storage. The total counts of aerobic microorganisms, Pseudomonas spp., yeasts, and molds were examined according to ISO methods. The polyphenolic profiles of plant powders and supplemented minced pork and beef samples were determined by HPLC-MS. The antioxidative capacity of the plant powders was analyzed using a spectrophotometric method. The findings of the study revealed that supplemented minced pork and beef samples had similar polyphenolic profiles and microbial growth dynamics. The highest antioxidative capacity was observed for anthocyanin-rich berry powders. In both minced pork and beef, rhubarb powder was the most effective plant material for inhibiting microbial growth, followed by blackcurrant pomace powder. In conclusion, all of the plant powders used in the present study can be used for the valorization of minced meat products, providing both antimicrobial and antioxidant effects.

Abstract
The phytochemical components and antioxidant capacity of Açaí (Euterpe oleracea) give it nutritional and bioactive characteristics with anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties; it is exported mainly from Brazil to various places worldwide. In Ecuador, the cultivated Euterpe oleracea variety has an abundant production that has not been used or studied in depth; because of this, it is relevant to expand the study of this fruit's phytochemical and antioxidant properties. This paper presents the results of evaluating the concentration of antioxidants and antioxidant activity in different stages of maturation and geographical locations of the Açaí, for which samples obtained in the Ecuadorian provinces of Sucumbíos and Orellana have been evaluated. Antioxidant concentrations were determined with a UV/VIS spectrophotometer at 450-760 nm wavelengths. Antioxidant capacity was determined using the ABTS and FRAP methods. It was evidenced that the values of total polyphenols and total flavonoids decrease with increasing ripening; the opposite effect occurs with total anthocyanins that have a higher concentration in ripe fruits and evidencing an antioxidant capacity that decreases with ripening determined by both methods (FRAP and ABTS).

Abstract
Wound healing involves a carefully regulated sequence of events, encompassing pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory stages, tissue regeneration, and remodeling. However, in individuals with diabetes, this process gets disrupted due to dysregulation caused by elevated glucose levels and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the bloodstream. Consequently, the pro-inflammatory stage is prolonged, while the anti-inflammatory phase is delayed, leading to impaired tissue regeneration and remodeling with extended healing time. Furthermore, the increased glucose levels in open wounds create an environment conducive to microbial growth and tissue sepsis, which can escalate to the point of limb amputation. Managing diabetic wounds requires meticulous care and monitoring due to the lack of widely available preventative and therapeutic measures. Existing clinical interventions have limitations, such as slow recovery rates, high costs, and inefficient drug delivery methods. Therefore, exploring alternative avenues to develop effective wound-healing treatments is essential. Nature offers a vast array of resources in the form of secondary metabolites, notably polyphenols, known for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, glucose-regulating, and cell growth-promoting properties. Additionally, nanoparticles synthesized through environmentally friendly methods hold promise for wound healing applications in diabetic and non-diabetic conditions. This review provides a comprehensive discussion and summary of the potential wound-healing abilities of specific natural polyphenols and their nanoparticles. It explores the mechanisms of action underlying their efficacy and presents effective formulations for promoting wound-healing activity.

Abstract
Aronia melanocarpa, known as black chokeberry, is rich in polyphenols, comprising flavonoids, such as anthocyanins, flavanols, and flavonols, and phenolic acids, such as chlorogenic acid. These polyphenols endow Aronia melanocarpa with preventive and therapeutic properties against various human diseases. Aronia melanocarpa has beneficial effects against diseases such as diabetes, inflammation, and hypertension. Considering the diverse functional components of Aronia melanocarpa, its efficacy in disease prevention and treatment can operate through multiple pathways, offering a more robust approach to disease control. This review covers the latest research results on the functional components of Aronia melanocarpa and their effects on human diseases.

Abstract
In this paper, the qualitative and quantitative profile is evaluated of the bioactive compounds, antioxidant activity (AA), microbiostatic properties, as well as the color parameters of jostaberry extracts, obtained from frozen (FJ), freeze-dried (FDJ), and oven-dried berries (DJ). The optimal extraction conditions by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) were selected after determination of the total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total antocyanin content (TA), AA by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH), and the free radical cation 2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonates (ABTS). Non-conventional extraction methods are less destructive to anthocyanins, while drying the berries reduced TA, regardless of the extraction method. The oven-drying process reduced the concentration of TA in DJ extracts by 99.4% and of ascorbic acid by 92.42% compared to FJ. AA was influenced by the jostaberry pretreatment methods. The DPPH and ABTS tests recorded values (mg Trolox equivalent/g dry weight) between 17.60 and 35.26 and 35.64 and 109.17 for FJ extracts, between 7.50 and 7.96 and 45.73 and 82.22 for FDJ, as well as between 6.31 and 7.40 and 34.04 and 52.20 for DJ, respectively. The jostaberry pretreatment produced significant changes in all color parameters. Mutual information analysis, applied to determine the influence of ultrasound and microwave durations on TPC, TFC, TA, AA, pH, and color parameters in jostaberry extracts, showed the greatest influence on TA (0.367 bits) and TFC (0.329 bits). The DPPH and ABTS inhibition capacity of all FJ' extracts had higher values and varied more strongly, depending on pH, heat treatment, and storage time, compared to the AA values of FDJ' and DJ' extracts. A significant antimicrobial effect was observed on all bacterial strains studied for FJP. FDJP was more active on Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. DJP was more active on Salmonella Abony and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antifungal effect of DJP was stronger compared to FDJP. Jostaberry extracts obtained under different conditions can be used in food production, offering a wide spectrum of red hues.

Abstract
Effectiveness of ozone concentrations (2, 5, and 10 ppm) and exposure time (3 and 9 min) on selected physicochemical properties (pH, soluble solids, color values (L*, a*, and b*), and texture) and health-promoting indicators such as organic acids, total phenolics (TP), and anthocyanins of "Angelino" fresh plums was evaluated during storage (0, 30, 90, and 120 days) in equilibrium modified atmosphere packaging (EMAP). Total anthocyanin contents and organic acid profiles were significantly affected by storage times. Malic acid (MA) was the main organic acid in "Angelino" plums. MA content (4663 and 4764 mg/L) was the highest value in the ozonated 2-ppm/9-min and 5-ppm/3-min than other ozonated groups and also control at 120 days of the storage. The ozone treatments especially 2-ppm/9-min and 5-ppm/3 min can significantly retard the degradation of MA content (8294 to 2688-2694 mg/L) during the storage (p < .05). Total phenol content were most significantly decreased in the control during storage, with the loss at the level of 31.7% of TPs, while the lowest one 2-ppm/9-min (20.8%) and 5-ppm/-3 min (21.9%). The color and texture are maintained for the ozone applications compared to the control during storage. Ozonation with 2-ppm/9-min and 5-ppm/-3 min showed the best performance while maintaining the storage stability based on the physicochemical properties including hardness and bioactive compounds (such as anthocyanins and organic acids), visual appearance due to the more attractive color (L*, a*, b*) the plums.

Abstract
The well-established anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of red fruits leave room for a biological pathway of improved muscle health promoted by berries in the diet. Our objective was to systematically review the number of trials conducted on human and animal species around the relationship between a berry diet and muscle health outcomes. Two independent examiners conducted a search for studies that utilized keywords associated with muscle health outcomes and a berry-based diet in both human and animal trials, in accordance with the PRISMA statement guidelines. The literature was searched through six electronic databases until December 2023. Screening of 152 retrieved articles resulted in a final selection of 16 reports investigating the effect of exposure to a berry-based diet and skeletal muscle health outcomes. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023479682). Among the selected studies, nine involved humans and seven animal models (rats and mice). Overall, most of the studies reported positive effects on performance or muscle health. Specifically, five studies investigated the possible effects of blackcurrant on active human subjects or athletes; three studies focused on blueberry and presented results on running performance (human sample) and muscle health (rat models). The rest of the studies involved raspberries (two studies, rat models), aronia (one study, rat models), elderberry (one study, rat models), and a mixed compound (one study, rat models). In conclusion, there is some early evidence that a berry-rich diet may increase performance or muscle health, but more research is needed to fully understand the underlying biological trajectories, and thus, no firm conclusions can yet be drawn.

Abstract
Plant diseases significantly impact crop productivity and quality, posing a serious threat to global agriculture. The process of identifying and categorizing these diseases is often time-consuming and prone to errors. This research addresses this issue by employing a convolutional neural network and support vector machine (CNN-SVM) hybrid model to classify diseases in four economically important crops: strawberries, peaches, cherries, and soybeans. The objective is to categorize 10 classes of diseases, with six diseased classes and four healthy classes, for these crops using the deep learning-based CNN-SVM model. Several pre-trained models, including VGG16, VGG19, DenseNet, Inception, MobileNetV2, MobileNet, Xception, and ShuffleNet, were also trained, achieving accuracy ranges from 53.82% to 98.8%. The proposed model, however, achieved an average accuracy of 99.09%. While the proposed model's accuracy is comparable to that of the VGG16 pre-trained model, its significantly lower number of trainable parameters makes it more efficient and distinctive. This research demonstrates the potential of the CNN-SVM model in enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of plant disease classification. The CNN-SVM model was selected over VGG16 and other models due to its superior performance metrics. The proposed model achieved a 99% F1-score, a 99.98% Area Under the Curve (AUC), and a 99% precision value, demonstrating its efficacy. Additionally, class activation maps were generated using the Gradient Weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) technique to provide a visual explanation of the detected diseases. A heatmap was created to highlight the regions requiring classification, further validating the model's accuracy and interpretability.

Abstract
Rubus ellipticus Smith. (Family Rosaceae), often known as the yellow Himalayan raspberry (Yellow Hissar), is one of the most widely used edible fruits in Indian folk medicinal systems. The current review aims to identify the gap between research and existing applications of this fruit to help scientists explore the current trends and opportunities for future development. Fruits of R. ellipticus are the source of several classes of compounds. Fruits of R. ellipticus are also rich in nutrients such as carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. It has been shown to have significant medical value in a variety of studies, including as an anti-diabetic, nephroprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, antitumor, wound healing, antifertility, oviposition deterrent, antibacterial, and antioxidant. Fruits of R. ellipticus have been the subject of several in vitro and in vivo investigations, all of which have corroborated their wide range of biological activities and demonstrated their potential for the identification of new therapeutic candidates and the development of innovative herbal food supplements. Additional mechanism-based pharmacological evaluation and clinical research should provide an adequate scientific basis for the traditional usage of R. ellipticus fruits, which is currently not sufficiently supported by the available research on its active components and molecular mechanisms.

Abstract
Physical activities that are unaccustomed and involve eccentric muscle contractions have been demonstrated to temporarily impair macrovascular and microvascular functions, which may be caused by exercise-induced oxidative stress. Jaboticaba (Myrciaria jaboticaba) is a famous Brazilian berry that has been described to exhibit high antioxidant activity. However, no human study has investigated the protective effects of jaboticaba consumption against the vascular damage induced by eccentric exercise. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess whether supplementation with jaboticaba berry juice could positively affect macro- and microvascular functions within 48 hours after eccentric exercise. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel trial enrolled 24 healthy participants consuming 250 mL per day of jaboticaba berry juice (containing ∼1,300 mg of total polyphenols) or placebo for 6 days. At the baseline, pre-exercise, and 24 h and 48 h postexercise stages, blood samples were taken for analysis of reduced glutathione (GSH) levels. Also, brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD), blood flow, and tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) responses to 5-minute cuff occlusion were assessed using Doppler ultrasound and near-infrared spectroscopy, respectively. Our findings revealed significant decreases in blood GSH (P < 0.001, ES = 0.76), FMD (P = 0.005, ES = 0.48), reperfusion slope of StO2 (P = 0.018, ES = 0.42) at 24 h and blood flow (P = 0.012, ES = 0.42) at 48 h following eccentric exercise in the control group as compared to the jaboticaba berry juice group. Our results demonstrated that jaboticaba berry juice prevented the exercise-induced increase in reactive oxygen species production and protected macro- and microvascular functions against the damage caused by eccentric exercise, suggesting that jaboticaba berry consumption could protect the vascular function under conditions of imbalance in redox homeostasis.

Abstract
The health effects of 100% fruit and vegetable juices (FVJ) represent a controversial topic. FVJ contain notable amounts of free sugars, but also vitamins, minerals, and secondary compounds with proven biological activities like (poly)phenols and carotenoids. The review aimed to shed light on the potential impact of 100% FVJ on human subject health, comprehensively assessing the role each type of juice may have in specific health outcomes for a particular target population, as reported in dietary interventions. The effects of a wide range of FVJ (orange, grapefruit, mandarin, lemon, apple, white, red, and Concord grapes, pomegranate, cranberry, chokeberry, blueberry, other minor berries, sweet and tart cherry, plum, tomato, carrot, beetroot, and watermelon, among others) were evaluated on a series of outcomes (anthropometric parameters, body composition, blood pressure and vascular function, lipid profile, glucose homeostasis, biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress, cognitive function, exercise performance, gut microbiota composition and bacterial infections), providing a thorough picture of the contribution of each FVJ to a health outcome. Some juices demonstrated their ability to exert potential preventive effects on some outcomes while others on other health outcomes, emphasising how the differential composition in bioactive compounds defines juice effects. Research gaps and future prospects were discussed. Although 100% FVJ appear to have beneficial effects on some cardiometabolic health outcomes, cognition and exercise performance, or neutral effects on anthropometric parameters and body composition, further efforts are needed to better understand the impact of 100% FVJ on human subject health.

Abstract
Berries are highly regarded as flavorful and healthy fruits that may prevent or delay some chronic diseases attributed to oxidative stress and inflammation. Berries are low in calories and harbor diverse bioactive phytochemicals, antioxidants, dietary fibers, and vitamins. This review delves into the main characteristics of fresh berries and berry products as foods and the technologies associated with their production. The main effects of processing operations and related variables on bioactive components and antioxidants are described. This review critically discusses why some health claims based on in vitro antioxidant data and clinical studies and intervention trials are difficult to assess. The review suggests that the beneficial health effects of berries are derived from a multifactorial combination of complex mixtures of abundant phenolic components, antioxidants, and their metabolites acting synergistically or additively with other nutrients like fibers and vitamins and possibly by modulating the gut microbiota.

Abstract
Aging significantly impacts several age-related neurological problems, such as stroke, brain tumors, oxidative stress, neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and dementia), neuroinflammation, and neurotoxicity. Current treatments for these conditions often come with side effects like hallucinations, dyskinesia, nausea, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal distress. Given the widespread availability and cultural acceptance of natural remedies, research is exploring the potential effectiveness of plants in common medicines. The ancient medical system used many botanical drugs and medicinal plants to treat a wide range of diseases, including age-related neurological problems. According to current clinical investigations, berries improve motor and cognitive functions and protect against age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, berries may influence signaling pathways critical to neurotransmission, cell survival, inflammation regulation, and neuroplasticity. The abundance of phytochemicals in berries is believed to contribute to these potentially neuroprotective effects. This review aimed to explore the potential benefits of berries as a source of natural neuroprotective agents for age-related neurological disorders.

Abstract
Raspberry seeds are a by-product of berries, both from their primary processing, such as in juice production, and secondary processing, such as in oil extraction. These seeds contain plenty of valuable components such as crude fiber, proteins, fats, and vitamins. Quality characterization is the initial step toward using these seeds as a sustainable and functional food. The aim of studying raspberry seeds' quality profile, both before oil extraction and after different processing methods (supercritical CO2, subcritical CO2, cold pressing, and hexane solvent), is to point out the benefits of this by-product and to raise consumer awareness about their health and well-being benefits. This study provides evidence that raspberry seeds have good physical parameters for use in other products as a functional food enrichment ingredient, such as in baked goods, offering considerable health benefits due to their high nutrient content. The weights, peroxide values, moisture content, nutritional energy values, and colors were determined before oil extraction to give initial seed values. The nutrient content and amounts of macroelements, P, K, Ca, and Mg, as well as microelements, B, Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mn, were determined in the tested variety 'Polka', both before and after oil extractions and using different methods. The raspberry seeds' moisture was 9.2%, their peroxide content was 5.64 mEq/kg, their nutritional value was 475.25 Kcal., and their total weight was 2.17 mg (1000 units). The seeds contain 7.4% protein, 22.1% crude fiber, 11.0% crude fat and oil, and 2.8% sugar. We determined how different oil extraction methods influence the nutrient, micro-, and macro-component values. We concluded that the seeds contained the highest manganese (45.3 mg/kg), iron (29.2 mg/kg), and zinc (17.4 mg/kg) contents and the lowest content of copper (5.1 mg/kg). This research shows that raspberry seeds represent a potential natural food ingredient, and after oil extraction with subcritical or supercritical CO2 or cold pressing, they can be used as a sustainable and functional food.

Abstract
The study aims to improve the quality of wooden breast meat (WBM) via the use of newly developed marinades based on selected strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in combination with the by-products of the dairy and fruit/berry industries. Six distinct marinades were produced based on milk permeate (MP) fermented with Lacticaseibacillus casei (Lc) and Liquorilactobacillus uvarum (Lu) with the addition of apple (ApBp) and blackcurrant (BcBp) processing by-products. The microbiological and acidity parameters of the fermented marinades were evaluated. The effects of marinades on the microbiological, technical, and physicochemical properties of meat were assessed following 24 and 48 h of WBM treatment. It was established that LAB viable counts in marinades were higher than 7.00 log10 colony-forming units (CFU)/mL and, after 48 h of marination, enterobacteria and molds/yeasts in WBM were absent. Marinated (24 and 48 h) WBM showed lower dry-matter and protein content, as well as water holding capacity, and exhibited higher drip loss (by 8.76%) and cooking loss (by 12.3%) in comparison with controls. After WBM treatment, biogenic amines decreased; besides, the absence of spermidine and phenylethylamine was observed in meat marinated for 48 h with a marinade prepared with Lu. Overall, this study highlights the potential advantages of the developed sustainable marinades in enhancing the safety and quality attributes of WBM.

Abstract
White crowberries (Corema album) are a fruit from an endemic shrub found in Southern European Atlantic costal dunes. Although this shrub and its fruits never became a formal commercial crop for a number of reasons, it has a long-lasting relevance and tradition, much associated with summer, beach and holidays. The main goal of this study was to conduct a thematic analysis of the words and small expressions people associate with white crowberries. For that, a questionnaire was used, and the participants were asked to indicate in an open-ended question which top-of-mind words/small expressions they associate with white crowberries. A total of 501 people participated in this study, of which only 394 knew about white crowberries, and from those, only 229 answered the open-ended question of interest to this purpose. The results showed that the words/small expressions given by the participants were distributed between five categories (1-Memories of places, people and times, 2-Emotions and experiences, 3-Sensorial perception, 4-Properties and uses, and 5-Natural resources' valuation). Additionally, 18 subcategories were also identified. The most representative of the categories was sensorial perception and the most relevant of the subcategories was habitats (a subcategory from category 1). The most frequent words mentioned by the participants were beach, berry and summer. In addition, the effect of sociodemographic groups was investigated and some variations were observed in the categories of the words mentioned by the participants according to sex, living environment or region. This work allowed for the identification of a high variability in the words or expressions that account for a rich patrimony of tacit knowledge, memories, emotions and perceptions of the population towards white crowberries, thus confirming their social as well as nutritional relevance.

Abstract
The health-promoting effects of berries have attracted attention due to the possible application of their extracts as functional ingredients in food products. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) are a new generation of environmentally friendly solvents for the extraction of natural products, and they are green alternatives to organic solvents, and they can improve the solubility, stability, and bioavailability of isolated biocompounds. In this study, an efficient eco-friendly method was used for the extraction of phenolic compounds from different berries: chokeberries, blueberries, and black goji berries with a range of eutectic solvents consisting of hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) such as choline chloride, L-proline, L-glycine, and L-lysine and hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) such as malic, citric, tartaric, lactic and succinic acids, glucose and glycerol. The obtained results indicated the ability of NADESs towards selective extraction of phenolics; the eutectic system choline chloride : malic acid showed selective extraction of anthocyanins, while choline chloride : glycerol and choline chloride : urea showed selectivity towards flavonoids and phenolic acids. The methodology for screening of the NADES extraction performance, which included chromatographic profiling via high-performance thin layer chromatography combined with chemometrics and spectrophotometric essays, allowed effective assessment of optimal eutectic solvents for isolation of different groups of phenolics. Great antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of extracts, along with the green nature of eutectic solvents, enable NADES berry extracts to be used as "green-labelled" functional foods or ingredients.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a significant health problem. The co-occurrence of obesity, carbohydrate metabolism disorders, hypertension and atherogenic dyslipidaemia is estimated to affect 20-30% of adults worldwide. Researchers are seeking solutions to prevent and treat the conditions related to MetS. Preventive medicine, which focuses on modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, including diet, plays a special role. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables has documented health benefits, mainly due to the polyphenolic compounds it contains. Anthocyanins represent a major group of polyphenols; they exhibit anti-atherosclerotic, antihypertensive, antithrombotic, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities, as well as beneficial effects on endothelial function and oxidative stress. This review presents recent reports on the mechanisms involved in the protective effects of anthocyanins on the body, especially among people with MetS. It includes epidemiological data, in vivo and in vitro preclinical studies and clinical observational studies. Anthocyanins are effective, widely available compounds that can be used in both the prevention and treatment of MetS and its complications. Increased consumption of anthocyanin-rich foods may contribute to the maintenance of normal body weight and modulation of the lipid profile in adults. However, further investigation is needed to confirm the beneficial effects of anthocyanins on serum glucose levels, improvement in insulin sensitivity and reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
