Association Between Serum Vitamin D Levels and Myopia in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2001-2006)

PURPOSE

To assess the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and myopia in people aged 12-50 years using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database.

METHODS

Demographics, vision, and serum vitamin D levels from NHANES (2001-2006) were analyzed. Multivariate analyses were performed to examine the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and myopia while controlling for sex, age, ethnicity, education level, serum vitamin A, and poverty status. The main outcome was presence or absence of myopia, defined as a spherical equivalent of -1 diopters or more.

RESULTS

Of the 11669 participants, 5,310 (45.5%) had myopia. The average serum vitamin D concentration was 61.6 ± 0.9 nmol/L for the myopic group and 63.1 ± 0.8 nmol/L for the non-myopic group (p = .01). After adjusting for all covariates, having higher serum vitamin D was associated with lower odds of having myopia (odds ratio 0.82 [0.74-0.92], p = .0007). In linear regression modeling that excluded hyperopes (spherical equivalent > +1 diopters), there was a positive relationship between spherical equivalent and serum vitamin D levels. Specifically, as serum vitamin D doubled, spherical equivalent increased by 0.17 (p = .02) indicating a positive dose-response relationship between vitamin D and myopia.

CONCLUSIONS

Participants with myopia, on average, had lower serum concentrations of vitamin D compared to those without myopia. While further studies are needed to determine the mechanism, this study suggests that higher vitamin D levels are associated with lower incidence of myopia.

Repeated High-dose Vitamin A Supplements, Standard of Care for Treating Xerophthalmia, leads to Hypervitaminosis A in Piglets

BACKGROUND

Vitamin A (VA) deficiency and excess negatively affect development, growth, and bone health. The WHO's standard of care for xerophthalmia due to VA deficiency, is three high-dose VA supplements of 50,000-200,000 IU, based on age, which may cause hypervitaminosis A in some individuals.

OBJECTIVES

This study measured VA status following three VA doses in two piglet studies.

METHODS

In Study 1, five groups of piglets (n = 10/group) were weaned 10 d post-birth to VA-free feed and orally administered 0; 25,000; 50,000; 100,000; or 200,000 IU VA ester on d 0, 1, and 7. On d 14-15, the piglets underwent the modified relative dose response (MRDR) test for VA deficiency, and were killed. Tissues were collected for HPLC analysis. Study 2 used the same design in three groups (n = 13/group) weaned at 16 d and administered 0; 25,000; and 200,000 IU doses.

RESULTS

In Study 1 (final weight: 3.6 + 0.7 kg), liver VA concentration was hypervitaminotic in 40, 90, and 100% of 50,000; 100,000; and 200,000 IU groups. The 25,000 IU group was 100% adequate, and the placebo group was 40% deficient. In Study 2 (final weight: 8.7 + 0.8 kg), where 200,000 IU could be prescribed to infants with a similar body weight, 31% of the piglets were hypervitaminotic, the 25,000 IU group was 100% VA adequate, and the placebo group was 100% deficient. The MRDR test measured deficiency in 50% and 70% of the placebo group in each study but had three false positives among hypervitaminotic piglets in Study 1.

CONCLUSIONS

Repeated high-dose VA may cause hypervitaminosis, indicating dose sizes may need reduction. The MRDR resulted in false positives in a hypervitaminotic state during malnutrition and should be paired with serum retinyl ester evaluation to enhance VA status assessment in populations with overlapping interventions.

Lipase-Responsive Lignin Composite Nanoparticles for the Delivery of Insoluble Bioactives

Low solubility and chemical instability are the main problems with insoluble bioactives. Lignin, with its exceptional biological properties and amphiphilicity, holds promise as a delivery system material. In this study, glycerol esters were incorporated into alkali lignin (AL) through ether and ester bonds, resulting in the successful synthesis of three hydrophobically modified alkali lignins (AL-OA, AL-OGL, and AL-SAN-OGL). Subsequently, lignin composite nanoparticles (LNPs@BC) encapsulating β-carotene were prepared using antisolvent and sonication techniques. The encapsulation rates were determined to be 37.69 ± 2.21%, 84.01 ± 5.55%, 83.82 ± 5.23%, and 83.11 ± 5.85% for LNP@BC-1, LNP@BC-2, LNP@BC-3, and LNP@BC-4, respectively, with AL, AL-OA, AL-OGL, and AL-SAN-OGL serving as the wall materials under optimized preparation conditions. The antioxidant properties and UV-absorbing capacity of the four lignins were characterized, demonstrating their efficacy in enhancing the oxygen and photostability of β-carotene. Following 6 h of UV irradiation, LNP@BC-4 exhibited a retention rate of 83.03 ± 2.85% for β-carotene, while storage under light-protected conditions at 25 °C for 7 days retained 73.33 ± 7.62% of β-carotene. Furthermore, the encapsulated β-carotene demonstrated enhanced thermal and storage stability. In vitro release experiments revealed superior stability of LNPs@BC in simulated gastric fluid (SGF), with β-carotene retention exceeding 77% in both LNP@BC-3 and LNP@BC-4. LNP@BC-4 exhibited the highest bioaccessibility in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) at 46.96 ± 0.80%, that LNP@BC-1 only achieved 10.87 ± 0.90%. The enzymatic responsiveness of AL-OGL and AL-SAN-OGL was confirmed. Moreover, LNPs@BC exhibited no cytotoxicity toward L929 cells and demonstrated excellent hemocompatibility. In summary, this study introduces a novel enzyme-responsive modified lignin that has promising applications in the fields of food, biomedicine, and animal feed.

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling determines neuroblastoma cell fate and sensitivity to retinoic acid

Retinoic acid (RA) is a standard-of-care neuroblastoma drug thought to be effective by inducing differentiation. Curiously, RA has little effect on primary human tumors during upfront treatment but can eliminate neuroblastoma cells from the bone marrow during post-chemo consolidation therapy-a discrepancy that has never been explained. To investigate this, we treated a large cohort of neuroblastoma cell lines with RA and observed that the most RA-sensitive cells predominantly undergo apoptosis or senescence, rather than differentiation. We conducted genome-wide CRISPR knockout screens under RA treatment, which identified BMP signaling as controlling the apoptosis/senescence vs differentiation cell fate decision and determining RA's overall potency. We then discovered that BMP signaling activity is markedly higher in neuroblastoma patient samples at bone marrow metastatic sites, providing a plausible explanation for RA's ability to clear neuroblastoma cells specifically from the bone marrow, seemingly mimicking interactions between BMP and RA during normal development.

Dietary micronutrients intake and its effect on haemoglobin levels of pregnant women for clinic visit in the Mount Cameroon health area: a cross-sectional study

Background

Nutritional deficiencies and its consequences such as anaemia are frequent among pregnant women residing in under resource settings. Hence, this study sought to investigate specific dietary micronutrient inadequacy and its effect on maternal haemoglobin levels.

Methods

This institution based cross-sectional survey enrolled 1,014 consenting pregnant women consecutively. Data on socio-demographic, economic and antenatal characteristics were recorded using a structured questionnaire. Minimum dietary diversity for women (MDD-W) was assessed using the 24-h recall method and haemoglobin (Hb) concentration (g/dL) determined using a portable Hb metre. Significant levels between associations was set at p < 0.05.

Results

Among those enrolled, 40.9% were anaemic while 89.6% had inadequate dietary nutrient intake. In addition, uptake of blood supplements, haem iron, plant and animal-based foods rich in vitamin A were 71.5, 86.2, 35.5 and 12.6%, respectively. Moreover, anaemia prevalence was significantly (p < 0.05) lower in women who took iron-folic acid along with food groups rich in haem iron (38.5%) or both plant and animal vitamin A (29.0%). Besides, mean maternal Hb levels was significantly (p < 0.001) higher in women who consumed haem iron (11.08 ± 1.35) and vitamin A food groups (11.34 ± 1.30) when compared with their counterparts who did not consume haem iron (10.54 ± 1.19) and vitamin A food groups (10.74 ± 1.31).

Conclusion

Dietary uptake of foods rich in haem-iron and vitamin A significantly improves Hb levels in Cameroonian pregnant women. Our findings underscore the importance of improving maternal nutritional awareness and counselling during antenatal period to reduce the anaemia burden.

Effect of multiple micronutrient-fortified bouillon on micronutrient status among women and children in the Northern Region of Ghana: Protocol for the Condiment Micronutrient Innovation Trial (CoMIT), a community-based randomized controlled trial

INTRODUCTION

Micronutrient deficiencies are prevalent in West Africa, particularly among women of reproductive age (WRA) and young children. Bouillon is a promising food fortification vehicle due to its widespread consumption. This study aims to evaluate the impact of multiple micronutrient-fortified bouillon cubes, compared to control bouillon cubes (fortified with iodine only), on micronutrient status and hemoglobin concentrations among lactating and non-lactating WRA and young children in northern Ghana.

METHODS

This randomized, controlled doubly-masked trial will be conducted in the Kumbungu and Tolon districts in the Northern Region of Ghana, where prior data indicate multiple micronutrient deficiencies are common. Participants will be: 1) non-pregnant non-lactating WRA (15-49 y), 2) children 2-5 y, and 3) non-pregnant lactating women 4-18 months postpartum. Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to receive household rations of one of two types of bouillon cubes: 1) a multiple micronutrient-fortified bouillon cube containing vitamin A, folic acid, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and iodine, or 2) a control cube containing iodine only. Each participant's household will receive a ration of bouillon cubes every 2 weeks, and households will be advised to prepare meals as usual, using the study-provided cubes. The trial duration will be 9 months for non-pregnant non-lactating WRA and children, and 3 months for lactating women. The primary outcomes will be changes in biomarkers of micronutrient status and hemoglobin among WRA and children and milk micronutrient concentrations among lactating women. Secondary outcomes will include change in prevalence of micronutrient deficiency and anemia; dietary intake of bouillon and micronutrients; inflammation, malaria, and morbidity symptoms; and child growth and development.

DISCUSSION

Evidence from this study will inform discussions about bouillon fortification in Ghana and West Africa.

Vitamin A - discovery, metabolism, receptor signaling and effects on bone mass and fracture susceptibility

The first evidence of the existence of vitamin A was the observation 1881 that a substance present in small amounts in milk was necessary for normal development and life. It was not until more than 100 years later that it was understood that vitamin A acts as a hormone through nuclear receptors. Unlike classical hormones, vitamin A cannot be synthesized by the body but needs to be supplied by the food as retinyl esters in animal products and ß-carotene in vegetables and fruits. Globally, vitamin A deficiency is a huge health problem, but in the industrialized world excess of vitamin A has been suggested to be a risk factor for secondary osteoporosis and enhanced susceptibility to fractures. Preclinical studies unequivocally have shown that increased amounts of vitamin A cause decreased cortical bone mass and weaker bones due to enhanced periosteal bone resorption. Initial clinical studies demonstrated a negative association between intake of vitamin A, as well as serum levels of vitamin A, and bone mass and fracture susceptibility. In some studies, these observations have been confirmed, but in other studies no such associations have been observed. One meta-analysis found that both low and high serum levels of vitamin A were associated with increased relative risk of hip fractures. Another meta-analysis also found that low levels of serum vitamin A increased the risk for hip fracture but could not find any association with high serum levels of vitamin A and hip fracture. It is apparent that more clinical studies, including large numbers of incident fractures, are needed to determine which levels of vitamin A that are harmful or beneficial for bone mass and fracture. It is the aim of the present review to describe how vitamin A was discovered and how vitamin A is absorbed, metabolized and is acting as a ligand for nuclear receptors. The effects by vitamin A in preclinical studies are summarized and the clinical investigations studying the effect by vitamin A on bone mass and fracture susceptibility are discussed in detail.

Predictors of recovery from severe acute malnutrition among 6-59 months children admitted to a hospital

Background and aim

Severe acute malnutrition is a threat to child survival as mortality rates in children with severe malnutrition are nine times higher. Globally, about 19 million children are severely malnourished. This study looked at children aged 6-59 months admitted to hospital to see how quickly they recovered from severe acute malnutrition as well as what factors predicted their recovery.

Methods

The study included 543 systematically chosen children with severe acute malnutrition who were admitted to the stabilization center of a hospital. Data from the patient registry were gathered using a retrospective follow-up study design. In order to find predictors of recovery, the Cox proportional hazard model was applied.

Results

From 543 children, 425 (78.27%) were recovered. The median survival time was 8 days. Having grade II edema, grade III edema, and pneumonia were negatively associated with recovery. Similarly, taking ceftriaxone, cloxacillin, and being on a nasogastric tube were associated with poor recovery. Conversely, better recovery rates were linked to exclusive breastfeeding and vitamin A supplementation.

Conclusion

Both the recovery rate and the median survival time fell within acceptable bounds. To boost the recovery rate, efforts are needed to lessen comorbidities.

Zebrafish cobll1a regulates lipid homeostasis via the RA signaling pathway

Background

The COBLL1 gene has been implicated in human central obesity, fasting insulin levels, type 2 diabetes, and blood lipid profiles. However, its molecular mechanisms remain largely unexplored.

Methods

In this study, we established cobll1a mutant lines using the CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene knockout technique. To further dissect the molecular underpinnings of cobll1a during early development, transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis was employed.

Results

Our study showed that compared to the control, cobll1a -/- zebrafish embryos exhibited impaired development of digestive organs, including the liver, intestine, and pancreas, at 4 days post-fertilization (dpf). Transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis results showed that in cobll1a knockout group, the expression level of genes in the Retinoic Acid (RA) signaling pathway was affected, and the expression level of lipid metabolism-related genes (fasn, scd, elovl2, elovl6, dgat1a, srebf1 and srebf2) were significantly changed (p < 0.01), leading to increased lipid synthesis and decreased lipid catabolism. The expression level of apolipoprotein genes (apoa1a, apoa1b, apoa2, apoa4a, apoa4b, and apoea) genes were downregulated.

Conclusion

Our study suggest that the loss of cobll1a resulted in disrupted RA metabolism, reduced lipoprotein expression, and abnormal lipid transport, therefore contributing to lipid accumulation and deleterious effects on early liver development.

Analysis of alterations in serum vitamins and correlations with gut microbiome, microbial metabolomics in patients with sepsis

BACKGROUND

Vitamins are essential micronutrients that play key roles in many biological pathways associated with sepsis. The gut microbiome plays a pivotal role in the progression of sepsis and may contribute to the onset of multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in serum vitamins, and their correlation with intestinal flora and metabolomic profiles in patients with sepsis.

METHODS

The serum levels of vitamins were determined by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC). 16S rRNA gene sequencing and Liquid Chromatography-tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) targeted metabolomics were used for microbiome and metabolome analysis.

RESULTS

In the training cohort: After univariate, multivariate (OPLS-DA) and Spearman analyses, it was concluded that vitamin levels of 25 (OH) VD3 and (VD2 + VD3), as well as vitamins A and B9, differed significantly among healthy controls (HC), non-septic critical patients (NS), and sepsis patients (SS) (P < 0.05). The validation cohort confirmed the differential vitamin findings from the training cohort. Moreover, analyses of gut flora and metabolites in septic patients and healthy individuals revealed differential flora, metabolites, and metabolic pathways that were linked to alterations in serum vitamin levels. We found for the first time that vitamin B9 was negatively correlated with g_Sellimonas.

CONCLUSION

Sepsis patients exhibited significantly lower levels of 25 (OH) VD3 and (VD2 + VD3), vitamins A and B9, which hold potential as predictive markers for sepsis prognosis. The changes in these vitamins may be associated with inflammatory factors, oxidative stress, and changes in gut flora.

Pet Wellness and Vitamin A: A Narrative Overview

The health of companion animals, particularly dogs and cats, is significantly influenced by nutrition, with vitamins playing a crucial role. Vitamin A, in particular, is indispensable, with diverse roles ranging from vision to immune modulation and reproduction. Despite its importance, the metabolism and dietary requirements of vitamin A in companion animals remain complex and not fully understood. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the historical perspective, the digestion, the metabolism, the physiological roles, the deficiency, the excess, and the interactions with other micronutrients of vitamin A in companion animals. Additionally, it highlights future research directions and gaps in our understanding. Insights into the metabolism of vitamin A in companion animals, personalized nutrition strategies based on genetic variability, longitudinal studies tracking the status of vitamin A, and investigations into its immunomodulatory effects are crucial for optimizing pet health and wellness. Furthermore, understanding the stability and bioavailability of vitamin A in pet food formulations is essential for ensuring the provision of adequate micronutrients. Overall, this review underscores the importance of vitamin A in companion animal nutrition and the need for further research to enhance our understanding and to optimize dietary recommendations for pet health and well-being.

Effect of lipid-based nutrient supplements on micronutrient status and hemoglobin among children with stunting: secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial in Uganda

BACKGROUND

Micronutrient deficiencies and anemia are widespread among children with stunting.

OBJECTIVES

We assessed the effects of lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS) containing milk protein (MP) and/or whey permeate (WP) on micronutrient status and hemoglobin (Hb) among children with stunting.

METHODS

This was a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial. Children aged 12-59 mo with stunting were randomly assigned to LNS (100 g/d) with milk or soy protein and WP or maltodextrin for 12 wk, or no supplement. Hb, serum ferritin (S-FE), serum soluble transferrin receptor (S-TfR), plasma cobalamin (P-Cob), plasma methylmalonic acid (P-MMA), plasma folate (P-Fol), and serum retinol-binding protein (S-RBP) were measured at inclusion and at 12 wk. Data were analyzed using linear and logistic mixed-effects models.

RESULTS

Among 750 children, with mean age ± SD of 32 ± 11.7 mo, 45% (n = 338) were female and 98% (n = 736) completed follow-up. LNS, compared with no supplementation, resulted in 43% [95% confidence interval (CI): 28, 60] greater increase in S-FE corrected for inflammation (S-FEci), 2.4 (95% CI: 1.2, 3.5) mg/L greater decline in S-TfR, 138 (95% CI: 111, 164) pmol/L greater increase in P-Cob, 33% (95% CI: 27, 39) reduction in P-MMA, and 8.5 (95% CI: 6.6, 10.3) nmol/L greater increase in P-Fol. There was no effect of LNS on S-RBP. Lactation modified the effect of LNS on markers of cobalamin status, reflecting improved status among nonbreastfed and no effects among breastfed children. LNS increased Hb by 3.8 (95% CI: 1.7, 6.0) g/L and reduced the odds of anemia by 55% (odds ratio: 0.45, 95% CI: 0.29, 0.70). MP compared with soy protein increased S-FEci by 14% (95% CI: 3, 26).

CONCLUSIONS

LNS supplementation increases Hb and improves iron, cobalamin, and folate status, but not vitamin A status among children with stunting. LNS should be considered for children with stunting. This trial was registered at ISRCTN as 13093195.

Vitamin A biomarkers were associated with α(1)-acid glycoprotein and C-reactive protein over the course of a human norovirus challenge infection

Retinol binding protein (RBP) is used as a proxy for retinol in population-based assessments of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) for cost-effectiveness and feasibility. When the cut-off of < 0·7 μmol/l for retinol is applied to RBP to define VAD, an equivalence of the two biomarkers is assumed. Evidence suggests that the relationship between retinol and RBP is not 1:1, particularly in populations with a high burden of infection or inflammation. The goal of this analysis was to longitudinally evaluate the retinol:RBP ratio over 1 month of follow-up among fifty-two individuals exposed to norovirus (n 26 infected, n 26 uninfected), test whether inflammation (measured as α-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and C-reactive protein (CRP)) affects retinol, RBP and the ratio between the two and assess whether adjusting vitamin A biomarkers for AGP or CRP improves the equivalence of retinol and RBP. We found that the median molar ratio between retinol and RBP was the same among infected (0·68) and uninfected (0·68) individuals. AGP was associated with the ratio and RBP individually, controlling for CRP, and CRP was associated with both retinol and RBP individually, controlling for AGP over 1 month of follow-up. Adjusting for inflammation led to a slight increase in the ratio among infected individuals (0·71) but remained significantly different from the expected value of one. These findings highlight the need for updated recommendations from the WHO on a cut-off value for RBP and an appropriate method for measuring and adjusting for inflammation when using RBP in population assessments of VAD.

Associations between serum retinol and all-cause mortality among adults with prediabetes and diabetes: A cohort study

We aimed to explore the associations between serum retinol and all-cause mortality among people with prediabetes and diabetes. The study included 2582 participants with prediabetes and 1654 with diabetes aged ≥40 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001-2006. Serum retinol was collected from laboratory tests and categorized into five groups, including <50, 50-60, 60-70, 70-80, and ≥80 μg/dL. Deaths were obtained by linkage to National Death Index up to December 31, 2019. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the associations between serum retinol and all-cause mortality. During the follow-up, 993 participants with prediabetes died and 874 participants with diabetes died. There were U-shaped associations between serum retinol and mortality among participants with prediabetes and diabetes, separately. Among participants with prediabetes, compared to serum retinol levels of 50-60 μg/dL, the hazard ratio (HR) (95% confidence interval [CI]) of mortality was 1.40 (95% CI 1.11 to 1.76) and 1.26 (95% CI 1.00 to 1.57) for serum retinol <50 or ≥80 μg/dL, respectively. Among participants with diabetes, compared to serum retinol levels of 50-60 μg/dL, the hazard ratio (HR) (95% confidence interval [CI]) of mortality was 1.25 (95% CI 0.96 to 1.62) and 1.21 (95% CI 0.91 to 1.62) for serum retinol <50 or ≥80 μg/dL, respectively. The U-shaped associations between serum retinol and mortality still existed among participants aged ≥60 years with prediabetes or diabetes but were not statistically significant among those aged 40-59 years with prediabetes or diabetes. In conclusion, both low and excessive serum retinol tended to be with higher mortality risk among people with abnormal blood glucose.

Hepatic Vitamin A Concentrations and Association with Infectious Causes of Child Death

OBJECTIVES

To assess postmortem vitamin A (VA) concentrations in children under 5 years of age and evaluate the association between VA deficiency (VAD) and infectious causes of death (CoD).

STUDY DESIGN

In this cross-sectional study from the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) Network, liver biopsies collected within 72 hours of death were analyzed from 405 stillbirths and children under 5 years in Kenya and South Africa. Total liver VA (TLVA) concentrations were quantified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography, and cutoffs of ≤0.1 μmol/g, >0.1 to <0.7 μmol/g, ≥0.7 to <1.0 μmol/g, and ≥1.0 μmol/g were used to define VAD, adequate VA status, high VA, and hypervitaminosis A, respectively. CoD were determined by expert panel review.

RESULTS

Among 366 liver samples with viable extraction, pooled prevalences of VAD, adequacy, high VA, and hypervitaminosis were 34.2%, 51.1%, 6.0%, and 8.7%, respectively. VAD was more common among neonates compared with stillbirths, infants, or children, and among those with low birthweight (LBW), underweight, or stunting (P < .05). When adjusting for site, age, and sex, there was no significant association of VAD with increased infectious CoD (OR 1.9, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.9, 3.8, P = .073). In stratified analyses, VA deficient boys, but not girls, had an increased risk of infectious CoD (OR 3.4, 95% CI 1.3, 10.3, P = .013).

CONCLUSIONS

Definitive postmortem assessment of VA status identified both VAD and VA excess among children under 5 years of age in Kenya and South Africa. VAD in boys was associated with increased risk of infectious mortality. Our findings may inform a transition from universal VA supplementation (VAS) to targeted strategies in certain countries.

Skin Protection by Carotenoid Pigments

Sunlight, despite its benefits, can pose a threat to the skin, which is a natural protective barrier. Phototoxicity caused by overexposure, especially to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), results in burns, accelerates photoaging, and causes skin cancer formation. Natural substances of plant origin, i.e., polyphenols, flavonoids, and photosynthetic pigments, can protect the skin against the effects of radiation, acting not only as photoprotectors like natural filters but as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory remedies, alleviating the effects of photodamage to the skin. Plant-based formulations are gaining popularity as an attractive alternative to synthetic filters. Over the past 20 years, a large number of studies have been published to assess the photoprotective effects of natural plant products, primarily through their antioxidant, antimutagenic, and anti-immunosuppressive activities. This review selects the most important data on skin photodamage and photoprotective efficacy of selected plant carotenoid representatives from in vivo studies on animal models and humans, as well as in vitro experiments performed on fibroblast and keratinocyte cell lines. Recent research on carotenoids associated with lipid nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, liposomes, and micelles is reviewed. The focus was on collecting those nanomaterials that serve to improve the bioavailability and stability of carotenoids as natural antioxidants with photoprotective activity.

Prevalence of Vitamin A Deficiency in Children Aged 6 to 17 Years - Western and Central Rural Areas, China, 2012-2021

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a leading global nutritional concern, ranking among the top four major nutritional deficiencies worldwide. The prevalence of VAD is unevenly distributed across various regions, both within China and globally.

The report adds valuable insights into the vitamin A nutritional status of rural students aged 6-17 years who participated in the Nutrition Improvement Programme for Rural Compulsory Education Students (NIPRCES). Over the decade from 2012 to 2021, there was a modest improvement in vitamin A status. The prevalence of VAD and sub-clinical VAD (SVAD) declined as the students aged. Throughout the majority of the survey years, the incidence of VAD was higher among males and western regions compared to females and central regions, respectively.

Fortification or biofortification: complimentary strategies or duplication of effort?

Micronutrient deficiencies continue to be a global concern, with the most common deficiencies being vitamin A, iron, zinc and B vitamins (folate and B12). Addressing this requires strategies that are scalable and equitable such that they reach all members of a population irrespective of socioeconomic status and geography. Fortification and biofortification offer potential large-scale solutions, however each have strengths and limitations depending on the context, particularly the cultural and political factors that may create barriers or opportunities for effectiveness. Planning how to target scarce resources for maximum impact requires an in-depth knowledge and understanding of local food systems and market dynamics, alongside strong government policy and legislative support. A food fortification programme was launched in Pakistan in 2016, supported by UK Aid and designed to address the high prevalence of vitamin A, iron and zinc deficiency, particularly in women and children. In the same year, the first zinc biofortified variety of wheat, Zincol-2016, was released in Pakistan, supported and developed through the HarvestPlus programme in collaboration with the Pakistan National Agriculture Research Centre. This review explores the challenges faced by fortification and biofortification, initiated independently, (but around the same time) in Pakistan.

Exploratory 5-year follow-up study of retinol, tocopherols, and carotenoids in multiple sclerosis

BACKGROUND

Retinol, tocopherols, and carotenoids (RTC) have physiological roles as vitamins, pro-vitamins, and antioxidants, and provide biomarkers of dietary vegetable and fruit intake. The goal was to investigate RTC in multiple sclerosis (MS).

METHODS

This exploratory study included 106 people with MS (71 relapsing-remitting MS or RR-MS; and 35 progressive MS or PMS) and 31 healthy controls (HC) at baseline and 5-year follow-up (5YFU). Serum retinol, α-carotene, β-carotene, α-tocopherol, δ-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, and lycopene were measured using high performance liquid chromatography. Serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) levels were measured using the single molecule array method. Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and low contrast letter acuity (LCLA) were used as disability measures.

RESULTS

Retinol in MS was positively correlated with α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, and α-tocopherol but negatively correlated with δ-tocopherol. EDSS was associated with α-tocopherol, δ-tocopherol, and lycopene. Greater retinol levels were associated with greater LCLA in RR-MS and PMS; high contrast visual acuity was not associated. Greater γ-tocopherol levels were associated with lower LCLA and high contrast visual acuity in PMS.

CONCLUSIONS

RTC exhibit distinctive associations with LCLA and EDSS in MS.

Do Global Dietary Nutrient Datasets Associate with Human Biomarker Assessments? A Regression Analysis

BACKGROUND

To assess the state and trends of global nutrition, our best tools are nationally representative assessments using human biomarker assays, yet these are expensive and logistically challenging. We instead often rely on more easily produced global nutrient datasets-measures of nutrients provided by the diet-as a proxy for nutritional intake and deficiency, due to their greater geographic and temporal coverage. However, the accuracy of global nutrient datasets is questionable.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to test whether estimates of inadequate dietary intake derived from existing global nutrient datasets reliably associate with biophysical deficiency.

DESIGN

We performed linear regressions of estimates of inadequate dietary nutrient intake derived from three global nutrient datasets-Global Dietary Database, Global Nutrient Database, and Global Expanded Nutrient Supply (GENuS) model-against the existing suite of nationally representative biomarker survey data for three key nutrients of global concern in two vulnerable demographic groups: zinc, folate, and vitamin A in females of childbearing age; and zinc and vitamin A in children younger than 5 y.

RESULTS

We found significant associations (P < 0.1) for only 3 of 22 regressions between global nutrition datasets and biophysical deficiency: zinc for females of childbearing age from GENuS and Global Dietary Database, and zinc for children under 5 y from GENuS. Folate and vitamin A show no reliable relationship between nutrient datasets and independent biomarker surveys. Applying the successful models for zinc to the accompanying full datasets yield estimates of global zinc deficiency of 31%-37% for these demographic groups.

CONCLUSIONS

We found that few estimates of nutritional inadequacy from global dietary datasets are associated with more direct measures of biophysical deficiency from biomarker studies. Researchers and policymakers must be cautious when applying global nutrient datasets to questions of global health and use them for limited applications.

A Correlation Study of Plasma and Breast Milk Retinol Concentrations in Breastfeeding Women in China

Retinol in breast milk is related to plasma concentration among breastfeeding women, but the linear or curvilinear relationships between the two remains unclear. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 403 Chinese breastfeeding women at 42 ± 7 days postpartum. Plasma and breast milk samples were assayed using high performance liquid chromatography to determine the concentration of retinol. Partial Spearman correlation and multivariable fractional polynomial regression were used to examine the relationships between the two retinol concentrations and between plasma retinol concentration and milk-to-plasma (M/P) retinol. The median (interquartile range, IQR) of the retinol concentration in the plasma was 1.39 (1.21, 1.63) μmol/L and 1.15 (0.83, 1.49) μmol/L in the breast milk, respectively. The partial correlation coefficient between them was 0.17 (p < 0.01). A linear relationship was observed with an adjusted regression coefficient of 0.34 (95% CI: 0.19, 0.49). The relationship between the plasma retinol and M/P ratio was nonlinear and segmented at 1.00 μmol/L of plasma retinol. The regression coefficients, below and above the segmented point, were -1.69 (95% CI: -2.75, -0.62) and -0.29 (95% CI: -0.42, -0.16), respectively. Plasma and breast milk retinol were positively correlated, whereas women with a low concentration of plasma retinol showed a stronger capacity of transferring retinol to breast milk.

Post-Harvest Atmospheric Pressure and Composition Modify the Concentration and Bioaccessibility of α- and β-Carotene in Carrots and Sweet Potatoes

Provitamin A (proVA) carotenoid synthesis and degradation are strongly influenced by environmental factors, including during post-harvest storage. Hypobaric and hyperbaric storages increase the shelf-life of many crops, but their effects on proVA carotenoids are not known. Our aim was to investigate the effects of modifications of atmospheric pressure and composition on α- and β-carotene concentration and bioaccessibility during the post-harvest storage of carrots and sweet potatoes. Vegetables were stored for 11-14 days at 20 °C in the dark in chambers with modified pressure and O2 concentrations. In carrots, α- and β-carotene concentrations increased significantly during storage, but compared to the control, they were significantly lower in hyperbaria (-23 and -26%, respectively), whereas they did not differ significantly in hypoxia and hypobaria. In sweet potatoes, α- and β-carotene concentrations decreased significantly during storage, but neither hypoxia, hypobaria nor hyperbaria led to any significant change compared to the control. There was a significant increase for carrot α- and β-carotene bioaccessibility in hypobaria and hyperbaria, while there was a significant decrease for sweet potato β-carotene bioaccessibility in hypobaria/hypoxia and normobaria/hypoxia (-45% and -65% vs. control, respectively). Atmospheric pressure and composition during the post-harvest storage of carrots and sweet potatoes modified the concentration and bioaccessibility of proVA carotenoids.

Effect of Electrohydrodynamic Drying on Drying Characteristics and Physicochemical Properties of Carrot

This study investigates the effects of electrohydrodynamic (EHD) drying technology on the drying kinetics, microstructure, quality, and nutritional components of carrots, along with conducting experiments on EHD drying under different voltage gradients. The experimental results showed that EHD drying technology could significantly increase the drying rate and the effective moisture diffusion coefficient. Within a certain range, the drying rate was directly proportional to the voltage. When the range was exceeded, the increase in voltage had a minimal effect on the drying rate. In terms of quality, the EHD drying group's color, shrinkage rate, and rehydration performance were superior to the control group, and different voltages had no significant effect on the shrinkage rate and rehydration performance. The retention of carotenoids in the EHD drying group was 1.58 to 2 times that of the control group. EHD drying had a negative impact on the total phenolic content and vitamin A content of dried carrot slices. Based on the results of infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the dehydrated carrot slices showed wrinkling due to water loss, with numerous pores, a generally intact structure, and retained functional groups. EHD drying had a significant impact on the secondary structure of proteins, where an increase in voltage led to an increase in disordered structure, with a smaller proportion of disordered structure in the lower voltage group compared to the control group, and a similar proportion of disordered structure between the higher voltage group and the control group. Results from low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) showed that EHD drying could retain more bound water compared to the control group, with the best retention of cellular bound water at a voltage of 26 kV and the best retention of cellular immobilized water at a voltage of 38 kV, indicating the superiority of EHD drying in preserving cellular structure. This study provided a theoretical basis and experimental foundation for the application of electrohydrodynamic drying technology to carrot drying, and promoted the practical application of EHD drying technology.

A comparative study on indicators of vitamin A status and risk factors for sensitivity and specificity of the methods to detect vitamin A deficiency

BACKGROUND

Serum retinol (SR) and retinol-binding protein (RBP) are commonly used indicators, but they are affected by infections and inflammation. This study aimed to assess the sensitivity and specificity of VA indicators to detect vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in 36-59-month-old children living in a rural area in Burkina Faso.

METHODS

In a community-based study, two cross-sectional surveys were carried out from November 2016 to September 2017 in the health district of Dandé in Burkina Faso. The surveys included 115 children 36-59 months old. Indicators of VA and inflammation assessed in all children included SR, RBP and total liver VA reserves (TLR) estimated by retinol isotope dilution, and inflammation markers (C-reactive protein (CRP) and alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP)). We calculated the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values. In addition, the effects of inflammation, helminth infection, and season on sensitivity and specificity were assessed.

RESULTS

The prevalence of VAD assessed by SR (< 0.7 µmol/L), RBP (< 0.7 µmol/L), and TLR (< 0.1 µmol/g liver) were, respectively, 30.9%, 33.3%, and 0%. Compared to TLR, the specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of SR were 71.1%, 0%, and 100%, and of RBP, were 68.9%, 0%, and 100%, respectively. The sensitivity was indeterminable for SR and RBP. The specificity of SR and RBP was lower during the dry season. Elevated CRP (> 5.0 mg/L) and AGP (> 1.0 g/L) were detected in 1.9% and 28.6% of children, respectively. The adjustment of VA indicators for inflammation improved SR's specificity to 75.9% and decreased RBP's specificity to 67.8%.

CONCLUSION

No cases of VAD were identified by TLR. However, (inflammation-adjusted) SR and RBP had varying accuracy in the estimation of VAD.

Vitamin A - a scoping review for Nordic nutrition Recommendations 2023

Vitamin A refers to a group of fat-soluble compounds with retinol activity, including all-trans retinol and pro-vitamin A carotenoids. Bioactive compounds include retinal and all-trans retinoic acid with important functions in vision, immune function, growth, and development. The literature search that was performed for the current scoping review yielded a total of seven publications relevant to setting the recommended daily intake for vitamin A. In total, six publications assessed the relationship of serum retinol and/or dietary vitamin A intake with fracture risk (n = 2), cancer (n = 3), and deficiency after bariatric surgery (n = 1). One additional report by the European Food Safety Administration (EFSA) with updated average requirements was included. The outcomes-based systematic reviews and meta-analyses showed positive associations for vitamin A intake and serum retinol with risk of hip fracture. Weak or inconclusive associations were observed for cancer or obesity. One publication by EFSA with updated estimated average requirements and population reference intakes for dietary vitamin A intakes was published in 2015. The EFSA recommendations and estimated average requirements are based on a European reference population, with body weights derived from an assumed body mass index of 22, which might be too low and not representative of the Nordic and Baltic populations, and consequently resulting in lower estimated average requirements and recommendations. In conclusion, there were limited new outcomes-based data for vitamin A and health outcomes.

Comparison of Published Estimates of the National Prevalence of Iron, Vitamin A, and Zinc Deficiency and Sources of Inconsistencies

Micronutrient deficiencies result in a broad range of adverse health and functional consequences, but the true prevalence of specific deficiencies remains uncertain because limited information is available from nationally representative surveys using recommended biomarkers. The present review compares various reported national deficiency prevalence estimates for nutrients and years where the estimates overlap for individual countries that conducted nationally representative surveys and explores possible reasons for any discrepancies discovered. Nationally representative micronutrient status surveys that were conducted since 2000 among preschool-aged children or women of reproductive age and included assessment of iron, vitamin A, or zinc status based on recognized biomarkers were considered eligible for inclusion, along with any modeled deficiency prevalence estimates for these same countries and years. There was considerable variation across different published prevalence estimates, with larger inconsistencies when the prevalence estimate was based on proxies, such as hemoglobin for iron deficiency and dietary zinc availability for zinc deficiency. Numerous additional methodological issues affected the prevalence estimates, such as which biomarker and what cutoff was used to define deficiency, whether the biomarker was adjusted for inflammation, and what adjustment method was used. For some country-years, the various approaches resulted in fairly consistent prevalence estimates. For other country-years, however, the results differed markedly and changed the conclusions regarding the existence and severity of the micronutrient deficiency as a public health concern. In conclusion, to determine micronutrient status, we consider the assessment of one of the recommended biomarkers in a population representative survey as the best available information. If indicated, results should be adjusted for inflammation and generally acceptable cutoffs should be applied to facilitate comparisons, although individual countries may also apply nationally defined cutoffs to determine when and where to intervene. Global consensus is needed on best practices for presenting survey results and defining the prevalence of deficiency.

Preterm Pigs Fed Donor Human Milk Have Greater Liver β-Carotene Concentrations than Pigs Fed Infant Formula

BACKGROUND

Milk carotenoids may support preterm infant health and neurodevelopment. Infants fed human milk often have higher blood and tissue carotenoid concentrations than infants fed carotenoid-containing infant formula (IF). Donor human milk (DHM) is a supplement to mother's own milk, used to support preterm infant nutrition.

OBJECTIVES

We tested whether tissue and plasma β-carotene concentrations would be higher in preterm pigs fed pasteurized DHM versus premature IF.

METHODS

This is a secondary analysis of samples collected from a study of the effects of enteral diet composition on necrotizing enterocolitis incidence. Preterm pigs received partial enteral feeding of either DHM (n = 7) or premature IF (n = 7) from 2 to 7 d of age. The diets provided similar β-carotene (32 nM), but DHM had higher lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene, whereas IF had higher total vitamin A. Plasma, liver, and jejunum carotenoid and vitamin A concentrations were measured by HPLC-PDA. Jejunal expression of 12 genes associated with carotenoid and lipid metabolism were measured.

RESULTS

Liver β-carotene concentrations were higher in DHM- than IF-fed piglets (23 ± 4 compared with 16 ± 2 μg/g, respectively, P = 0.0024), whereas plasma and jejunal β-carotene concentrations were similar between diets. Liver vitamin A stores were higher in piglets fed IF than DHM (50.6 ± 10.1 compared with 30.9 ± 7.2 μg/g, respectively, P=0.0013); however, plasma vitamin A was similar between groups. Plasma, liver, and jejunum concentrations of lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene were higher with DHM than IF feeding. Relative to piglets fed DHM, jejunal low density lipoprotein receptor (Ldlr) expression was higher (61%, P = 0.018) and cluster determinant 36 (Cd36) expression (-27%, P = 0.034) was lower in IF-fed piglets.

CONCLUSIONS

Preterm pigs fed DHM accumulate more liver β-carotene than IF-fed pigs. Future studies should further investigate infant carotenoid bioactivity and bioavailability.

Overexpressing CsPSY1 Gene of Tea Plant, Encoding a Phytoene Synthase, Improves α-Carotene and β-Carotene Contents in Carrot

Tea plants (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze) belong to Theaceae family, in the section Thea. Tea plants are widely distributed in subtropical and tropical regions in the word. α-carotene and β-carotene in the tea leaves belong to carotenoids, which are associated with the aroma and color of the tea. Phytoene synthase (PSY) is a rate-limiting enzyme in carotenoids biosynthesis. We identified three CsPSY genes in 'Shuchazao', named CsPSY1, CsPSY2, and CsPSY3. Structural analysis of three CsPSY genes showed that CsPSY1 had a longer intro structure. The cis-acting elements of CsPSYs promoter were mainly associated with light-responsiveness, abiotic stress-responsiveness, and hormone-responsiveness. CsPSY1 exhibited expression in all tissues of the tea plants, whereas CsPSY2 and CsPSY3 were trace expression levels in all tissues. The positive expression of CsPSY1 under hormonal and abiotic stresses suggested its role in plant development and defense responses. The amino acid sequence of CsPSY1 was highly conserved in eight tea cultivars. The recombinant vector pCAMBIA1301-CsPSY1 was constructed to stabilize the overexpression of CsPSY1 in carrot. The contents of α-carotene and β-carotene in transgenic carrot callus were significantly increased. This study provides a foundational basis for further research on the function of CsPSYs and carotenoids accumulation in tea plants.

Insights into the liver-eyes connections, from epidemiological, mechanical studies to clinical translation

Maintenance of internal homeostasis is a sophisticated process, during which almost all organs get involved. Liver plays a central role in metabolism and involves in endocrine, immunity, detoxification and storage, and therefore it communicates with distant organs through such mechanisms to regulate pathophysiological processes. Dysfunctional liver is often accompanied by pathological phenotypes of distant organs, including the eyes. Many reviews have focused on crosstalk between the liver and gut, the liver and brain, the liver and heart, the liver and kidney, but with no attention paid to the liver and eyes. In this review, we summarized intimate connections between the liver and the eyes from three aspects. Epidemiologically, we suggest liver-related, potential, protective and risk factors for typical eye disease as well as eye indicators connected with liver status. For molecular mechanism aspect, we elaborate their inter-organ crosstalk from metabolism (glucose, lipid, proteins, vitamin, and mineral), detoxification (ammonia and bilirubin), and immunity (complement and inflammation regulation) aspect. In clinical application part, we emphasize the latest advances in utilizing the liver-eye axis in disease diagnosis and therapy, involving artificial intelligence-deep learning-based novel diagnostic tools for detecting liver disease and adeno-associated viral vector-based gene therapy method for curing blinding eye disease. We aim to focus on and provide novel insights into liver and eyes communications and help resolve existed clinically significant issues.

Zinc and selenium status in coronavirus disease 2019

We systematically analyzed and attempted to discuss the possibility that deficiencies of zinc or selenium were associated with the incidence and severity of COVID-19. We searched for published and unpublished articles in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane up to 9 February 2023. And we selected healthy individuals, mild/severe, and even deceased COVID-19 patients to analyze their serum data. Data related to 2319 patients from 20 studies were analyzed. In the mild/severe group, zinc deficiency was associated with the degree of severe disease (SMD = 0.50, 95% CI 0.32-0.68, I2 = 50.5%) and we got an Egger's test of p = 0.784; but selenium deficiency was not associated with the degree of severe disease (SMD = - 0.03, 95% CI - 0.98-0.93, I2 = 96.7%). In the surviving/death group, zinc deficiency was not associated with mortality of COVID-19 (SMD = 1.66, 95%CI - 1.42-4.47), nor was selenium (SMD = - 0.16, 95%CI - 1.33-1.01). In the risk group, zinc deficiency was positively associated with the prevalence of COVID-19 (SMD = 1.21, 95% CI 0.96-1.46, I2 = 54.3%) and selenium deficiency was also positively associated with the prevalence of it (SMD = 1.16, 95% CI 0.71-1.61, I2 = 58.3%). Currently, serum zinc and selenium deficiencies increase the incidence of COVID-19 and zinc deficiency exacerbates the disease; however, neither zinc nor selenium was associated with mortality in patients with COVID-19. Nevertheless, our conclusions may change when new clinical studies are published.

Vitamins as regulators of calcium-containing kidney stones - new perspectives on the role of the gut microbiome

Calcium-based kidney stone disease is a highly prevalent and morbid condition, with an often complicated and multifactorial aetiology. An abundance of research on the role of specific vitamins (B6, C and D) in stone formation exists, but no consensus has been reached on how these vitamins influence stone disease. As a consequence of emerging research on the role of the gut microbiota in urolithiasis, previous notions on the contribution of these vitamins to urolithiasis are being reconsidered in the field, and investigation into previously overlooked vitamins (A, E and K) was expanded. Understanding how the microbiota influences host vitamin regulation could help to determine the role of vitamins in stone disease.

Macular Pigment Optical Density and Skin Carotenoids in a Childhood Sample

BACKGROUND

Carotenoids are plant pigments with light filtering and antioxidant properties that deposit in human tissues, including retina and skin. Descriptive characteristics and covariates of carotenoid status in macula and skin have been examined in adults; however, similar studies in children are limited. Thus, this study aimed to delineate how factors of age, sex, race, weight status, and dietary carotenoid intake relate to macular and skin carotenoids in children.

METHODS

Children (7-13 y, N = 375) completed heterochromatic flicker photometry to assess macular pigment optical density (MPOD). Participants underwent anthropometrics to measure weight status (BMI percentile [BMI%]), and parent/guardian provided demographic information. Subsample data were available for skin carotenoids (N = 181), assessed using reflection spectroscopy, and dietary carotenoids (N = 101) using the Block Food Frequency Questionnaire. Relationships between skin and macular carotenoids were assessed using partial Pearson's correlations controlling for age, sex, race, and BMI%. Relationships between dietary carotenoids and macular and skin carotenoids were assessed using stepwise linear regression including age, sex, race, and BMI% in the model.

RESULTS

Mean MPOD was 0.56 ± 0.22 and skin carotenoid score was 282 ± 94.6. There was no significant correlation between MPOD and skin carotenoids (r = 0.02, P = 0.76). BMI% was negatively associated with skin (stdβ = -0.42, P < 0.001), but not macular carotenoids (stdβ = -0.04, P = 0.70). Neither MPOD nor skin carotenoids were associated with age, sex, or race (all P > 0.10). MPOD was positively associated with energy-adjusted reported lutein + zeaxanthin intake (stdβ = 0.27, P = 0.01). Skin carotenoids were positively associated with energy-adjusted reported carotenoid intake (stdβ = 0.26, P = 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

The mean MPOD values in children were higher than what has been reported in adult populations. Previous studies in adult samples report an average MPOD of 0.21. Although macular and skin carotenoids were not related, they were associated with dietary carotenoids relevant to the respective tissues; however, skin carotenoids may be more susceptible negative influence from higher weight status.

Genome-wide transcriptomics and microRNAomics analyses uncover multi-faceted mechanisms to cope with copper stress in ancient macrobenthos amphioxus

The mechanisms underlying the toxicity of environmental stress are unclear for marine macrobenthos. Copper/Cu has posed the most serious threats to amphioxus, an ancient and model benthic cephalochordate. Herein, a dynamic change in the physiological parameters (GR, SOD, ATP, and MDA) was detected with ROS accumulation in Branchiostoma belcheri exposed to 0.3 mg·L-1 Cu. Transcriptomes and microRNAomes of B. belcheri were generated to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which this amphioxus copes with Cu exposure. Time-specific genes identified at different time points after exposure were involved in the stimulus and immune response, detoxification and ionic homeostasis, aging and the nervous system, sequentially, with prolongation of exposure time, forming a dynamic process of molecular response to Cu stress. In total, 57 differentially expressed miRNAs were identified under Cu stress. Transcriptomics-miRNAomics analyses indicate that these miRNAs targeted genes associated with many key biological processes such as xenobiotics degradation, oxidative stress, and energy metabolism. The constructed miRNA-mRNA-pathway network uncovered a broad post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism in B. belcheri to cope with Cu stress. Overall, this integrated analyses show that enhanced defense response, accelerated ROS elimination, and repressed ATP production constitute a comprehensive strategy to cope with Cu toxicity in the ancient macrobenthos.

Use of Compartmental Modeling and Retinol Isotope Dilution to Determine Vitamin A Stores in Young People with Sickle Cell Disease Before and After Vitamin A Supplementation

BACKGROUND

Suboptimal plasma retinol concentrations have been documented in US children with sickle cell disease (SCD) hemoglobin SS type (SCD-HbSS), but little is known about vitamin A kinetics and stores in SCD.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives were to quantify vitamin A total body stores (TBS) and whole-body retinol kinetics in young people with SCD-HbSS and use retinol isotope dilution (RID) to predict TBS in SCD-HbSS and healthy peers as well as after vitamin A supplementation in SCD-HbSS subjects.

METHODS

Composite plasma [13C10]retinol response data collected from 22 subjects with SCD-HbSS for 28 d after isotope ingestion were analyzed using population-based compartmental modeling ("super-subject" approach); TBS and retinol kinetics were quantified for the group. TBS was also calculated for the same individuals using RID, as well as for healthy peers (n = 20) and for the subjects with SCD-HbSS after 8 wk of daily vitamin A supplements (3.15 or 6.29 μmol retinol/d [900 or 1800 μg retinol activity equivalents/d]).

RESULTS

Model-predicted group mean TBS for subjects with SCD-HbSS was 428 μmol, equivalent to ∼11 mo of stored vitamin A; vitamin A disposal rate was 1.3 μmol/d. Model-predicted TBS was similar to that predicted by RID at 3 d postdosing (mean, 389 μmol; ∼0.3 μmol/g liver); TBS predictions at 3 compared with 28 d were not significantly different. Mean TBS in healthy peers was similar (406 μmol). RID-predicted TBS for subjects with SCD-HbSS was not significantly affected by vitamin A supplementation at either dose.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite differences in plasma retinol concentrations, TBS was the same in subjects with SCD-HbSS compared with healthy peers. Because 56 d of vitamin A supplementation at levels 1.2 to 2.6 times the Recommended Dietary Allowance did not increase TBS in these subjects with SCD-HbSS, further work will be needed to understand the effects of SCD on retinol metabolism. A Scoping Review of Nutritional Biomarkers Associated with Food Security

Food insecurity affects more than 40 million individuals in the United States and is linked to negative health outcomes due, in part, to poor dietary quality. Despite the emergence of metabolomics as a modality to objectively characterize nutritional biomarkers, it is unclear whether food security is associated with any biomarkers of dietary quality. This scoping review aims to summarize studies that examined associations between nutritional biomarkers and food security, as well as studies that investigated metabolomic differences between people with and without food insecurity. PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and AGRICOLA were searched through August 2022 for studies describing food insecurity and metabolic markers in blood, urine, plasma, hair, or nails. The 78 studies included consisted of targeted assays quantifying lipids, dietary nutrients, heavy metals, and environmental xenobiotics as biochemical features associated with food insecurity. Among those biomarkers which were quantified in at least five studies, none showed a consistent association with food insecurity. Although three biomarkers of dietary quality have been assessed between food-insecure versus food-secure populations, no studies have utilized untargeted metabolomics to characterize patterns of small molecules that distinguish between these two populations. Further studies are needed to characterize the dietary quality profiles of individuals with and without food insecurity.

Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in fat-soluble vitamin deficiency

Fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E, and K, are essential for maintaining normal body function and metabolism. Fat-soluble vitamin deficiency may lead to bone diseases, anemia, bleeding, xerophthalmia, etc. Early detection and timely interventions are significant for preventing vitamin deficiency-related diseases. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is developing into a potent instrument for the precise detection of fat-soluble vitamins due to its high sensitivity, high specificity, and high resolution.

The effects of functional foods mixture on inflammatory cytokines and biochemical findings in hospitalized patients with COVID-19: a randomized double-blind controlled trial

BACKGROUND

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been shown to affect nutritional recommendations. Some functional foods have been demonstrated to be useful in the treatment of people with COVID-19. However, little is known about the impact of combining functional foods on disease control. This study aimed to investigate the effects of functional foods mixture on serum levels of inflammatory cytokines and biochemical findings in patients with COVID-19.

METHODS

A randomized double-blind controlled trial was conducted in Baqiyatallah Al-Azam hospital in Tehran, Iran. Sixty patients were randomly assigned to receive either a soup containing functional foods (n = 30) or a usual soup (control group) (n = 30). Participants' sociodemographic information was gathered using a general questionnaire. Blood levels of inflammatory markers and biochemical findings were assessed using standard protocols.

RESULTS

The results showed that soup containing functional foods was more effective in controlling serum levels of D-dimer, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine than the control group (P < 0.05). Also, more significant improvement was found in the intervention group vs control group in terms of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-17, IL-10, and tumor necrose factor-α (P < 0.05). In contrast, the control intervention more efficiently controlled potassium levels and reduced quantitative C-reactive protein than the intervention group (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

This study indicates a soup containing functional foods could alleviate biomarkers of inflammation in patients with COVID-19. However, its effectiveness on biochemical findings remained inconclusive which warranted further research.

The contributions of parental lactation on offspring development: It's not udder nonsense!

The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis describes how maternal stress exposures experienced during critical periods of perinatal life are linked to altered developmental trajectories in offspring. Perinatal stress also induces changes in lactogenesis, milk volume, maternal care, and the nutritive and non-nutritive components of milk, affecting short and long-term developmental outcomes in offspring. For instance, selective early life stressors shape the contents of milk, including macro/micronutrients, immune components, microbiota, enzymes, hormones, milk-derived extracellular vesicles, and milk microRNAs. In this review, we highlight the contributions of parental lactation to offspring development by examining changes in the composition of breast milk in response to three well-characterized maternal stressors: nutritive stress, immune stress, and psychological stress. We discuss recent findings in human, animal, and in vitro models, their clinical relevance, study limitations, and potential therapeutic significance to improving human health and infant survival. We also discuss the benefits of enrichment methods and support tools that can be used to improve milk quality and volume as well as related developmental outcomes in offspring. Lastly, we use evidence-based primary literature to convey that even though select maternal stressors may modulate lactation biology (by influencing milk composition) depending on the severity and length of exposure, exclusive and/or prolonged milk feeding may attenuate the negative in utero effects of early life stressors and promote healthy developmental trajectories. Overall, scientific evidence supports lactation to be protective against nutritive and immune stressors, but the benefits of lactation in response to psychological stressors need further investigation.

Nutrition in children with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a condition defined as pancreatic loss of exocrine function, including decreased digestive enzymes and bicarbonate secretion, which leads to maldigestion and malabsorption of nutrients. It is a common complication in many pancreatic disorders. If left undiagnosed, EPI can cause poor digestion of food, chronic diarrhea, severe malnutrition and related complications. Nutritional status and fat-soluble vitamins should be carefully assessed and monitored in patients with EPI. Early diagnosis of EPI is clinically important for appropriate nutritional support and initiating pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) which could significantly improve patient outcomes. The evaluation of nutritional status and related unique management in children with EPI will be discussed in this review.

Phytochemicals in Cancer Treatment and Cancer Prevention-Review on Epidemiological Data and Clinical Trials

Phytochemicals are a non-nutritive substances that are present in plants and contribute significantly to their flavor and color. These biologically active compounds are classified into five major groups, namely phenolics, carotenoids, organosulfur compounds, nitrogen-containing compounds, and alkaloids, and are known for their potential health benefits in the prevention of various diseases, including cancer. The purpose of this review article is to explore the potential therapeutic benefits of the dietary phytochemicals, such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, phytosterols, carotenoids, and stilbenes, in cancer treatment and prevention based on the epidemiological studies and clinical trials. Although the majority of epidemiological studies report a significant advantage of the heightened phytochemical consumption and increased serum levels of these compounds, linking increased exposure with a lower cancer risk across most cancer types, these effects could not be replicated in the most available clinical trials. In fact, many of these trials were withdrawn early due to a lack of evidence and/or risk of harm. Despite the strong anticancer effect of phytochemicals, as well as their proven efficacy in multiple epidemiological studies, there is still a great need for human studies and clinical trials, with great caution regarding the safety measures. This review article provides an overview of the epidemiological and clinical evidence supporting the potential chemopreventive and anticancer properties of phytochemicals, with a focus on the need for further research in this area.

Revisiting PINI Scoring in Light of Recent Biological Advances

The prognostic inflammatory and nutritional index (PINI) is a simple scoring formula allowing the follow-up of dietary protein restriction and infectious complications affecting critically ill patients hospitalized in medical and surgical wards. The World Health organization (WHO) has recently recommended using the binary CRP (C-reactive protein) and AGP (α1-acid glycoprotein) numerators of the PINI formula in underprivileged inhabitants of developing countries to evaluate their (sub)clinical infectious states making their chronic malnutrition worse. These studies, mainly located in Africa and Asia, demonstrate that children and women enduring the combined effects of infectious burden and (micro)nutrient deprivation (principally retinol and iron) usually manifest persistent refractoriness and slackened recovery throughout dietary rehabilitation. The additive measurement of ALB (albumin) and TTR (transthyretin) composing the denominator of the PINI formula is shown to be helpful in grading the downsizing of lean body mass (LBM), a cornerstone of bodybuilding. The confrontation of these four objective parameters thus allows the quantification of the respective importance of nutritional and inflammatory components of any disease process, taking into account that TTR is the sole plasma protein remaining highly correlated to the fluctuations of LBM. The below review highlights the prevailing roles played by protein nutritional states in the release of plasma retinol to target tissues and to the restoration of iron-deficient anemias.

Association between long-term air pollution exposure and development of diabetes among community-dwelling adults: Modification of the associations by dietary nutrients

BACKGROUND

Studies on the modifying effects of dietary factors on the association between air pollution and diabetes-related outcomes are limited. We examined whether dietary nutrients could modify the association between long-term air pollution exposure and the development of diabetes.

METHODS

We used data from the Cardiovascular Disease Association Study, which enrolled adults aged 40-69 years in Korea between 2005 and 2011 and followed them up until 2016 (n = 14,667). Annual concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) at each participant's residence(s) were estimated using community multiscale air quality models. Intake of 22 dietary nutrients was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire during the baseline survey. We examined the product terms between air pollution levels (continuous) and each dietary nutrient (quartile) using Cox regression models, adjusted for potential confounders.

RESULTS

PM_2.5 [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.49, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.11, 2.00] and NO₂ (HR = 1.29, 95 % CI: 1.12, 1.49) concentrations were found to be associated with incident diabetes. NO₂ levels interacted with dietary intake of retinol, vitamin A, and cholesterol (p-values for interaction < 0.05). Stronger associations were observed between NO₂ levels and the occurrence of diabetes among individuals with a lower intake of these nutrients compared to those with a higher intake. No interaction was found between PM_2.5 and the 22 investigated dietary nutrients.

CONCLUSIONS

Adequate intake of dietary nutrients, such as retinol, vitamin A, and cholesterol, from various food items in a balanced diet may prevent the occurrence of diabetes in a setting wherein reduction of air pollution levels cannot be achieved in a short time frame.

Association of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and liver fibrosis detected by transient elastography with serum retinol in American adults

Background and objective

Retinol is a precursor of vitamin A, which is metabolized and maintained in the liver and is involved in the pathogenesis of the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and liver fibrosis. The relationship between NAFLD and liver fibrosis with serum retinol levels remains insufficient and inconclusive. Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between NAFLD, fibrosis, and serum retinol levels in American adults.

Methods

A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using information from the 2017-2018 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The exposure factors were NAFLD and liver fibrosis status detected using transient elastography (TE), and the outcome was serum retinol levels. Weighted multivariate regressions were established to assess the correlation between NAFLD and liver fibrosis and serum retinol levels. Subgroup analyses were also performed.

Results

This study included 3,537 participants. Compared to the group without NAFLD, NAFLD was positively correlated with serum retinol levels (β = 1.28, 95% CI: 0.19, 2.37). In the subgroup analysis, a positive correlation between NAFLD and serum retinol levels was found in people aged < 60 years, Mexican Americans, and those with a body mass index (BMI) < 25. On the contrary, compared to the group without liver fibrosis, there was a significant negative association between liver fibrosis and serum retinol (β = -3.46, 95% CI: -5.16, -1.75), especially in people aged < 60 years, non-Hispanic white/black individuals, and people with a BMI ≥ 25.

Conclusion

Our study suggests that NAFLD status may be positively associated with serum retinol levels in adult patients, and liver fibrosis may be negatively associated with serum retinol levels. Further studies are required to examine the associations found in our study.

Evaluation of the carotenoid and fat-soluble vitamin profile of industrial hemp inflorescence by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and photodiode-array detection

Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is a plant matrix whose use is recently spreading for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical purposes. Detailed characterization of hemp composition is needed for future research that further exploits the beneficial effects of hemp compounds on human health. Among minor constituents, carotenoids and fat-soluble vitamins have largely been neglected to date despite carrying out several biological activities and regulatory functions. In the present paper, 22 target carotenoids and fat-soluble vitamins were analyzed in the inflorescences of seven Italian industrial hemp varieties cultivated outdoor. The analytes were extracted by cold saponification to avoid artifacts and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with Selected reaction monitoring mass spectrometry. Phytoene, phytofluene, and all-trans-β-carotene were the most abundant in all analyzed samples (31-55 µg g^-1, 11.6-29 µg g^-1, and 7.3-53 µg g^-1, respectively). Besides the target analytes, liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode-array detection allowed us to tentatively identify several other carotenoids based on their retention behavior and UV-vis spectra with the support of theoretical rules and data in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive characterization of carotenoids and fat-soluble vitamins in industrial hemp inflorescence.

An overview of vitamins as epidrugs for colorectal cancer prevention

Gene expression altering epigenomic modifications such as DNA methylation, histone modification, and chromosome remodeling is crucial to regulating many biological processes. Several lifestyle factors, such as diet and natural, bioactive food compounds, such as vitamins, modify epigenetic patterns. However, epigenetic dysregulation can increase the risk of many diseases, including cancer. Various studies have provided supporting and contrasting evidence on the relationship between vitamins and cancer risk. Though there is a gap in knowledge about whether dietary vitamins can induce epigenetic modifications in the context of colorectal cancer (CRC), the possibility of using them as epidrugs for CRC treatment is being explored. This is promising because such studies might be informative about the most effective way to use vitamins in combination with DNA methyltransferase inhibitors and other approved therapies to prevent and treat CRC. This review summarizes the available epidemiological and observational studies involving dietary, circulating levels, and supplementation of vitamins and their relationship with CRC risk. Additionally, using available in vitro, in vivo, and human observational studies, the role of vitamins as potential epigenetic modifiers in CRC is discussed. This review is focused on the action of vitamins as modifiers of DNA methylation because aberrant DNA methylation, together with genetic alterations, can induce the initiation and progression of CRC. Although this review presents some studies with promising results, studies with better study designs are necessary. A thorough understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms of vitamin-mediated epigenetic regulation of CRC genes can help identify effective therapeutic targets for CRC prevention and treatment.

A metabolomics study: Could plasma metabolites be a guide for the prevention of tamsulosin side effects?

BACKGROUND

The understanding of precision medicine, which aims for high efficacy and low toxicity in treatments, has gained more importance with omics technologies. In this study, it was aimed to reach new suggestions for low-toxicity treatment by clarifying the relationship between tamsulosin side effects and metabolome profiles.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Plasma samples of control and tamsulosin-treated rats were analyzed by LC-Q-TOF/MS/MS. MS/MS data was processed in XCMS software for the identification of metabolite and metabolic pathway analysis. Data were classified with MATLAB 2019b for multivariate data analysis. 34m/z values were found to be significantly different between the drug and control groups (P≤0.01 and fold analysis≥1.5) and identified by comparing METLIN and HMDB databases.

RESULTS

According to multivariate data analysis, α-Linolenic Acid, Thiamine, Retinoic acid, 1.25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3-26.23-Lactone, L-Glutamine, L-Serine, Retinaldehyde, Sphingosine 1-phosphate, L-Lysine, 23S.25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3, Sphinganine, L-Cysteine, Uridine 5'-diphosphate, Calcidiol, L-Tryptophan, L-Alanine levels changed significantly compared to the control group. Differences in the metabolisms of Retinol, Sphingolipid, Alanine-Aspartate-Glutamate, Glutathione, Fatty Acid, Tryptophan, and biosynthesis of Aminoacyl-tRNA, and Unsaturated Fatty Acid have been successfully demonstrated by metabolic pathway analysis. According to our study, vitamin A and D supplements can be recommended to prevent side effects such as asthenia, rhinitis, nasal congestion, dizziness and IFIS in the treatment of tamsulosin. Alteration of aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis and sphingolipid metabolism pathways during tamsulosin treatment is effective in the occurrence of nasal congestion.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study provides important information for tamsulosin therapy with high efficacy and low side effects in precision medicine.

The Effects of One Egg Per Day on Vitamin A Status Among Young Malawian Children: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial

Background

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is common in populations with limited dietary diversity and access to vitamin A-rich foods.

Objectives

This analysis aimed to determine the impact of supplementing children's diets with 1 egg/d on the concentration of plasma retinol and RBP and the prevalence of VAD.

Methods

Children age 6-9 mo living in the Mangochi district of Malawi were individually randomly assigned to receive 1 egg/d for 6 mo (n = 331) or continue their usual diet (n = 329) in the Mazira trial (clinicaltrials.gov; NCT03385252). This secondary analysis measured plasma retinol by HPLC and RBP, CRP, and α-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) by ELISA techniques at enrollment and 6 mo follow-up. Retinol and RBP were adjusted for inflammation, and mean concentrations were compared between groups using linear regression models. In addition, prevalence ratios of VAD (retinol <0.7 μmol/L) were compared between groups using log-binomial or modified Poisson regression models.

Results

After 6 mo of study participation, 489 were assessed for retinol (egg: n = 238; control: n = 251), and 575 (egg: n = 281; control: n = 294) were assessed for RBP. Prevalence of inflammation (CRP >5 mg/L or AGP >1 g/L: 62%) and inflammation-adjusted VAD (7%) at enrollment did not differ between groups. At follow-up, the egg intervention group did not differ from the control in inflammation-adjusted retinol [geometric mean (95% CI); egg: 1.10 μmol/L (1.07, 1.13); control: 1.08 (1.05, 1.12)], RBP [egg: 0.99 μmol/L (0.96, 1.02); control: 0.97 (0.94, 1.00)], or prevalence of VAD [egg: 6%; control: 3%; prevalence ratio: 1.87 (0.83, 4.24)].

Conclusions

Provision of 1 egg/d did not impact VAD, plasma retinol, or RBP among young children in rural Malawi, where the prevalence of VAD was low. Curr Dev Nutr 2023;x:xx.This trial was registered at [clinicaltrials.gov] as [NCT03385252].

Association between Biomarkers of Inflammation and Total Liver Vitamin A Reserves Estimated by 13C-Retinol Isotope Dilution among Preschool Children in 5 African Countries

BACKGROUND

Vitamin A (VA) assessment is important for targeting public health programs. Retinol isotope dilution (RID) is a sensitive method to estimate total body VA stores (TBSs) and total liver reserves (TLRs), but the impact of subclinical inflammation on RID is unclear.

OBJECTIVE

We determined the association between TBSs and TLRs, estimated by RID, and inflammation among preschool children without clinical infection in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Tanzania.

METHODS

Five studies (n = 532; 47.9 ± 8.3 mo; 49.0% male) included ¹³C-RID and measurement of inflammation markers, CRP, and α₁-acid glycoprotein (AGP). Spearman correlations were used to evaluate TBSs and TLRs with inflammation biomarkers. Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare TBSs and TLRs by inflammation categories [normal vs. elevated CRP (>5 mg/L) or AGP (>1 g/L)] and inflammation stage [reference, incubation (elevated CRP), early convalescence (elevated CRP and AGP), and late convalescence (elevated AGP)].

RESULTS

Complete data were available for 439 children. Median (Q1, Q3) TLRs ranged from 0.12 (0.07, 0.18) μmol/g in Ethiopia to 1.10 (0.88, 1.38) μmol/g in South Africa. Elevated CRP ranged from 4% in Burkina Faso to 42% in Cameroon, and elevated AGP from 20% in Tanzania to 58% in Cameroon. Pooled analysis (excluding Cameroon) showed a negative correlation between TBSs and AGP (ρ = -0.131, P = 0.01). Children with elevated AGP had higher probability of having lower TBSs (probability = 0.61, P = 0.002). TBSs differed among infection stages (P = 0.020). Correlations between TLRs and CRP or AGP were not significant.

CONCLUSIONS

No indication of systematic bias in RID-estimated TLRs was found due to subclinical inflammation among preschool children. The inverse relationship between TBSs and AGP may reflect decreased stores after infection or an effect of inflammation on isotope partitioning. Further research should investigate potential confounding variables to improve TBS-estimate validity.

Vitamin A regulates tissue-specific organ remodeling in diet-induced obesity independent of mitochondrial function

Background

Perturbed mitochondrial energetics and vitamin A (VitA) metabolism are associated with the pathogenesis of diet-induced obesity (DIO) and type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Methods

To test the hypothesis that VitA regulates tissue-specific mitochondrial energetics and adverse organ remodeling in DIO, we utilized a murine model of impaired VitA availability and high fat diet (HFD) feeding. Mitochondrial respiratory capacity and organ remodeling were assessed in liver, skeletal muscle, and kidney tissue, which are organs affected by T2D-associated complications and are critical for the pathogenesis of T2D.

Results

In liver, VitA had no impact on maximal ADP-stimulated mitochondrial respiratory capacity (VADP) following HFD feeding with palmitoyl-carnitine and pyruvate each combined with malate as substrates. Interestingly, histopathological and gene expression analyses revealed that VitA mediates steatosis and adverse remodeling in DIO. In skeletal muscle, VitA did not affect VADP following HFD feeding. No morphological differences were detected between groups. In kidney, VADP was not different between groups with both combinations of substrates and VitA transduced the pro-fibrotic transcriptional response following HFD feeding.

Conclusion

The present study identifies an unexpected and tissue-specific role for VitA in DIO that regulates the pro-fibrotic transcriptional response and that results in organ damage independent of changes in mitochondrial energetics.

Biomarkers of Micronutrients and Phytonutrients and Their Application in Epidemiological Studies

Nutritional biomarkers can be used as important indicators of nutritional status and play crucial roles in the prevention as well as prognosis optimization of various metabolism-related diseases. Measuring dietary with the deployment of biomarker assessments provides quantitative nutritional information that can better predict the health outcomes. With the increased availability of nutritional biomarkers and the development of assessment tools, the specificity and sensitivity of nutritional biomarkers have been greatly improved. This enables efficient disease surveillance in nutrition research. A wide range of biomarkers have been used in different types of studies, including clinical trials, observational studies, and qualitative studies, to reflect the relationship between diet and health. Through a comprehensive literature search, we reviewed the well-established nutritional biomarkers of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, and their association with epidemiological studies, to better understand the role of nutrition in health and disease.
