Abstract
In this study, bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles were synthesized using the green approach with Piper betle leaves, and the removal efficiency of one of the pharmaceutical compounds, Atorvastatin, was investigated. UV, SEM, FTIR, EDAX, particle size, and zeta potential measurements were used to confirm nanoparticle fabrication. The removal efficiency of Atorvastatin (10 mg/L) by bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles was 67% with a contact time of 30 min at pH 4, the adsorbent dosage of 0.2 g/L, and stirring at 100 rpm. Piper betle bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles have demonstrated excellent stability, reusability, and durability, even after being reused five times. Furthermore, the synthesized bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles demonstrated remarkable antimicrobial properties against gram-negative strains such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, gram-positive strains such as Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, and fungi such as Aspergillus niger. In addition, the antioxidant properties of the synthesized bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles were assessed using the DPPH radical scavenging assay. The results indicated that the nanoparticles had good antioxidant activity. Thus, using Piper betle extract to make Cu-Fe nanoparticles made the procedure less expensive, chemical-free, and environmentally friendly, and the synthesized bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles helped remove the pharmaceutical compound Atorvastatin from wastewater.

Abstract
The most recent advancement in food packaging research involves improving the shelf life of perishable foods by utilising bio-based resources that are edible, eco-friendly, and biodegradable. The current study investigated the effect of edible pectin coating on mature green tomatoes to improve shelf life and storage properties. Zucchini pectin was used to make edible coating. The antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of extracted pectin were investigated. The findings indicated that the extracted pectin had antimicrobial (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Aspergillus niger) and antioxidant (34.32% at 1 mg/mL) properties.Tomatoes were immersed in pectin solutions of varying concentrations, 1, 3, and 5% (w/v). Physiological evaluations of weight loss, total sugar content, titratable acidity pH, and ascorbic acid were performed on tomatoes during their maturing stages of mature green, light red, pure red, and breaking. Coating the tomatoes with pectin (5%) resulted in minimal weight loss while increasing the retention of total sugar, ascorbic acid, and titratable acidity. The shelf life of the pectin-coated tomatoes was extended to 11 days, while the uncoated control tomatoes lasted 9 days. Thus, a 5% edible pectin solution was found to be effective in coating tomatoes. The current study suggests that using 5% pectin as an edible coating on tomatoes can delay/slow the ripening/maturing process while also extending the shelf-life of tomatoes without affecting their physiochemical properties, which is scalable on a large scale for commercial purposes.

Abstract
Medicinal plants have been historically significant for treating common human diseases in Mexico. Although some ethnobotanical research exists, limited ethnomedicinal data has documented medicinal plants employed for eye health. This review focuses on ethnomedicinal information and preclinical and clinical studies regarding medicinal plants used in Mexico for treating symptoms associated with eye conditions. An electronic database search was conducted by consulting scientific articles, books about Mexican herbal medicine, and academic theses. This work recorded 69 plant species belonging to 26 plant families, especially plants from the Crassulaceae family, which are used as remedies for irritation and infections in the eye. Eight of these medicinal plants have been the subject of preclinical studies using ocular models, and one medicinal plant has been tested in clinical trials. The evidence of pharmacological effects indicates the promising therapeutic potential of these medicinal plants for developing new treatments for eye conditions. However, toxicological studies are necessary to ensure safe application to the eye, particularly as traditional medicine continues to be relied upon worldwide. In addition, this review highlights the need to perform ethnobotanical and phytochemical studies in Mexico regarding the medicinal flora used as remedies for eye conditions.

Abstract
Ultraviolet-B irradiation is a common environmental stressor that has detrimental effects on human skin. Natural sunscreens are well-known for their ability to benefit inflamed sunburn and dry skin. This study examined the effect of formulated Ipomoea carnea herbal cream on UVB-induced skin damage. We screened the bioactive compounds of I. carnea crude extract, showing significant antioxidant activity. Additionally, we evaluated the cytotoxicity, revealing that I. carnea extract has less toxicity to vero cells (IC50 98.45 μg/mL) than to A375 cells (IC50 48.95 μg/mL). Based on this, we formulated the I. carnea herbal cream (FIHC) at 50, 100 and 200 mg concentrations and evaluated its organoleptic characteristics. Then, the rats were exposed to UVB radiation (32,800 J/m2) four times/week (on alternate days) before the cream was applied topically to the dorsal skin surface. Under UVB stress without treatment, rats showed deep dermal damage. In contrast, rats treated with the FIHC exhibited significantly reduced sunburn. Moreover, the histopathological and biochemical assays were confirmed by the topical application of FIHC, which had potentially reduced the skin elasticity and maintained the imbalanced enzyme and non-enzymatic antioxidant activity. Our findings amply demonstrate that the FIHC significantly accelerated the recovery of UVB-induced lesions through antioxidant and down-regulation of skin photodamage.

Abstract
In the study, the optimization of the extraction from Aloe vera leaf waste was performed via varying solid-to-solvent ratio, solvent type, extraction time, and technique (maceration, heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions-HAE, UAE, and MAE, respectively). The optimal extraction conditions for achieving the highest polyphenol content are a 1:30 ratio, 70% ethanol, and 30 min of HAE. Total flavonoid and protein contents were significantly higher in the extract from MAE, while total condensed tannin content was the highest in HAE. LC-MS analysis quantified 13 anthraquinone and chromone compounds. The variations in the FT-IR spectra of the extracts obtained by different extraction procedures are minor. The influence of extraction conditions on the antioxidant ability of the extracts depended on applied antioxidant assays. The extracts possessed medium inhibition properties against Staphylococcus aureus and weak inhibitory activity against Enterococcus feacalis. The extracts had stimulative effect on HaCaT cell viability. Regarding the extraction yield, there was a significant difference between the used extraction techniques (MAE > HAE > maceration and UAE). The presented study is an initial step in the production of polyphenol-rich extracts from A. vera leaf waste aimed to be used for the potential preparation of pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations for the skin.

Abstract
Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is an annual oilseed crop that is widely used for crude sesame oil (CSO) extraction. CSO is unrefined, thus, may impact the storage stability due to the uncontrolled processing and handling conditions, and absence of preservatives. The purpose of this study intends to analyze the fatty acid profile and oxidative stability of CSO. In a complete randomized (2*2*2) factorial design, clean sesame seeds (3.92% moisture content) were used for oil extraction with/without roasting treatment (200°C). The fatty acid profile and oxidative value of the CSO were analyzed. The roasted sesame seed oil extraction yield was higher (50.9%) and composed of 83.15% unsaturated fatty acids with an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 95.3. The ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) to saturated fatty acids (SFAs) was 2.9, while the moisture content of the CSO was 0.37%, exceeding the tolerable limit. The predominant fatty acids of CSO include palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic acids. Elevated thermal condition during processing and handling speeding up oxidation exceeded the tolerable limit after 25 days of storage, while the ethanoic basil extract was found to inhibit oxidation in the range of 16.38%-90% (p-value < .05). The peroxide value (PV), para-anisidine value (p-AV), and total oxidation (TOTOX) value of CSO with 50 ppm (parts per million) basil extract were detected within the range of 0.29-3.92, 0.75-2.59, and 1.57-8.6 milliequivalents (meq) O2/kg oil, respectively, below the tolerable limit. Nevertheless, basil extract's antioxidant property was declined during prolonged storage, in particular, at elevated temperature. The use of organic extracts of locally available sweet basil herb is capable of mitigating oxidation and substituting inorganic antioxidant for a healthier diet.

Abstract
The biosynthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles provides an excellent alternative to the chemical synthesis approach. The aim of the current study was a green and eco-friendly synthesis of zirconium nanoparticles (ZrNPs) from fruit peels of Punica granatum (Pomegranate). The synthesis of ZrNPs was confirmed using a UV-visible spectrophotometer. The functional groups present on surface of ZrNPs were analyzed using FTIR. The average size of obtained ZrNPs was analyzed using SEM and DLS and it was around 20-60 nm. The antimicrobial activity of obtained ZrNPs was tested against Gram-positive strains (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus), Gram-negative strains (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) and Fungi (Aspergillus niger) by agar well diffusion method. ZrNPs showed maximum zone of inhibition against S. aureus (19 mm) and A. niger (18 mm) at the maximum concentration of 200 μg/mL. The antioxidant scavenging activity of obtained ZrNPs was analyzed using the following methods: DPPH radical scavenging activity, Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, Ferric reducing antioxidant power and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging activity. This the first and foremost study on ZrNPs synthesized using P. granatum fruit peel extract reporting their efficacy as antimicrobial agents against Bacteria and Fungi. Considering the tolerance of zirconium towards human body, it can also be used as antimicrobial coating material on human implants.

Abstract
Heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) are potent carcinogenic compounds induced by the Maillard reaction in well-done cooked meats. Free amino acids, protein, creatinine, reducing sugars and nucleosides are major precursors involved in the production of polar and non-polar HAAs. The variety and yield of HAAs are linked with various factors such as meat type, heating time and temperature, cooking method and equipment, fresh meat storage time, raw material and additives, precursor’s presence, water activity, and pH level. For the isolation and identification of HAAs, advanced chromatography and spectroscopy techniques have been employed. These potent mutagens are the etiology of several types of human cancers at the ng/g level and are 100- to 2000-fold stronger than that of aflatoxins and benzopyrene, respectively. This review summarizes previous studies on the formation and types of potent mutagenic and/or carcinogenic HAAs in cooked meats. Furthermore, occurrence, risk assessment, and factors affecting HAA formation are discussed in detail. Additionally, sample extraction procedure and quantification techniques to determine these compounds are analyzed and described. Finally, an overview is presented on the promising strategy to mitigate the risk of HAAs by natural compounds and the effect of plant extracts containing antioxidants to reduce or inhibit the formation of these carcinogenic substances in cooked meats.

Abstract
Ultraviolet radiation-induced sunburns are characterized by pigmented, wrinkled, and dried skin, with rashes and red spots. Chemical sunscreen lotion shows beneficial effects, but it shows the adverse side effect while in continuous usage. Natural substances of plant origin are deemed a possible cause of UV radiation through sunscreen resources. On this basis, we formulated the cold cream from the Caralluma adscendens Var. attenuata (CAVA) plant extract. The phytocompounds were studied by using GC-MS. The antioxidant potential of the plant extract was determined, and the CAVA showed cytotoxicity on A375 skin melanoma cells determined by MTT assay. The FT-IR spectra analysis confirmed the chemical nature of crude and crosslinking between cold creams. The cream was applied topically to rats pre-exposed to UV-B radiation (32,800 J/m2) four times/week (on alternate days). UV-B exposed without any treatment rats showed increased red spots or wrinkles (5 cm2). In contrast, the cold cream treatment application on irradiated skin has significantly reduced the size of rashes and red spots and the wound was contracted in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, histopathology of the experimental rat skin confirmed that CAVA cream treatment significantly reduced the epidermal thickening, damage in dermis and epidermis layers, and restructured the hair follicles. This study suggests that the cream formulated using CAVA can alleviate the damages caused by the UV-B-irradiation at a high level and safeguard the skin tissues. Abstract
Abstract
The objective of the present work was to improve the biological activity of Padina gymnospora. In the current study, silver chloride nanoparticles have been synthesized using the aqueous extract of Padina gymnospora and further characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscope. Further, the hemolytic activity and eco-toxicity of silver chloride nanoparticles analyzed. The synthesized silver chloride nanoparticles were found to be mono-dispersed and spherical with an average size of 11.5–32.86 nm. The particles showed an anticancer effect in a dose-dependent manner against breast cancer cell line (MCF-7 cell lines) (IC50 = 31.37 μg ml−1). In addition, it showed the larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti at a lower dose (3.92 μg ml−1) than that of the aqueous extract (13.01 μg ml−1). Nanoparticles also exhibited greater antimicrobial activity for both bacterial and fungal pathogens. The synthesized silver chloride nanoparticles showed a maximum zone of inhibition, i.e., 31 mm for Candida albicans followed and 27 mm for vancomycin resistance Enterococcus faecalis.The results suggest the possible use of synthesized silver nanoparticles with P. gymnospora as therapeutic agent for breast cancer, dengue vector control and as antimicrobial agent.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate whether a methanolic extract of Ocimum basilicum (OB) leaves prevented lenticular protein alterations in an in-vitro model of selenite-induced cataractogenesis.Materials and Methods: Transparent lenses extirpated from Wistar rats were divided into three groups: control; selenite only; treated. Control lenses were cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) alone, selenite only lenses were cultured in DMEM containing sodium selenite only (100 µM selenite/ml DMEM) and treated lenses were cultured in DMEM containing sodium selenite and the methanolic extract of OB leaves (200 µg of extract/ml DMEM); all lenses were cultured for 24 h and then processed. The parameters assessed in lenticular homogenates were lenticular protein sulfhydryl and carbonyl content, calcium level, insoluble to soluble protein ratio, sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic (SDS-PAGE) patterns of lenticular proteins, and mRNA transcript and protein levels of αA-crystallin and βB1-crystallins.Results: Selenite only lenses exhibited alterations in all parameters assessed. Treated lenses exhibited values for these parameters that were comparable to those noted in normal control lenses.Conclusions: The methanolic extract of OB leaves prevented alterations in lenticular protein sulfhydryl and carbonyl content, calcium level, insoluble to soluble protein ratio, SDS-PAGE patterns of lenticular proteins, and expression of αA-crystallin and βB1-crystallin gene and proteins in cultured selenite-challenged lenses. OB may be further evaluated as a promising agent for the prevention of cataract.
