Speciation and bioaccessibility of heavy metals in PM2.5 in Baoding city, China

Insight study of rare earth elements in PM2.5 during five years in a Chinese inland city: Composition variations, sources, and exposure assessment

The booming development of rare earth industry and the extensive utilization of its products accompanied by urban development have led to the accelerated accumulation of rare earth elements (REEs) as emerging pollutants in atmospheric environment. In this study, the variation of REEs in PM2.5 with urban (a non-mining city) transformation was investigated through five consecutive years of sample collection. The compositional variability and provenance contribution of REEs in PM2.5 were characterized, and the REEs exposure risks of children and adults via inhalation, ingestion and dermal absorption were also evaluated. The results showed an increase in the total REEs concentration from 46.46 ± 35.16 mg/kg (2017) to 81.22 ± 38.98 mg/kg (2021) over the five-year period, with Ce and La making the largest contribution. The actual increment of industrial and traffic emission source among the three pollution sources was 1.34 ng/m3. Coal combustion source displayed a downward trend. Ingestion was the main exposure pathway for REEs in PM2.5 for both children and adults. Ce contributed the most to the total intake of REEs in PM2.5 among the population, followed by La and Nd. The exposure risks of REEs in PM2.5 in the region were relatively low, but the trend of change was of great concern. It was strongly recommended to strengthen the concern about traffic-related non-exhaust emissions of particulate matter.

Potential environmental and human health menace of spent graphite in lithium-ion batteries

The growing demand for lithium-ion batteries for portable electronics and electric vehicles results in a booming lithium battery market, leading to a concomitant increase in spent graphite. This research investigated the potential impacts of spent graphite on environmental and human health using standardized toxicity extraction and Life Cycle Impact Assessment models. The spent graphite samples were classified as hazardous waste due to the average nickel content of 337.14 mg/L according to Chinese regulations. Besides, cadmium and fluorine were the other elements that exceeded the regulations threshold. Easily ignored aluminum and heavy metal cobalt are other harmful elements according to the results of Life Cycle Impact Assessments. All the metallic harmful elements mainly exist in a transferable state. Thermogravimetry infrared spectrometry coupled with mass spectrometry was employed to recognize the emitted gases and explore gas emission behavior. Inorganic gases of CO, H2S, SO2, SO3, oxynitride, HCl, and fluoride-containing gases were detected. Sulfur-containing gases released from spent graphite were contributed by the residual sulfuric acid after leaching. The correlation between the evolution of emitted gases and the heating schedule was established simultaneously. The research comprehensively illustrates the pollution of spent graphite and provides assistance for the design of green recycling schemes for spent graphite.

A city-level dataset of heavy metal emissions into the atmosphere across China from 2015-2020

The absence of nationwide distribution data regarding heavy metal emissions into the atmosphere poses a significant constraint in environmental research and public health assessment. In response to the critical data deficiency, we have established a dataset covering Cr, Cd, As, and Pb emissions into the atmosphere (HMEAs, unit: ton) across 367 municipalities in China. Initially, we collected HMEAs data and covariates such as industrial emissions, vehicle emissions, meteorological variables, among other ten indicators. Following this, nine machine learning models, including Linear Regression (LR), Ridge, Bayesian Ridge (Bayesian), K-Neighbors Regressor (KNN), MLP Regressor (MLP), Random Forest Regressor (RF), LGBM Regressor (LGBM), Lasso, and ElasticNet, were assessed using coefficient of determination (R2), root-mean-square error (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) on the testing dataset. RF and LGBM models were chosen, due to their favorable predictive performance (R2: 0.58-0.84, lower RMSE/MAE), confirming their robustness in modelling. This dataset serves as a valuable resource for informing environmental policies, monitoring air quality, conducting environmental assessments, and facilitating academic research.

Bioavailability-based risk assessment of various heavy metals via multi-exposure routes for children and teenagers in Beijing, China

Assessing the health risks of sensitive population, such as children and teenagers, through multiple exposure routes (MERs) such as ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact is critical for policy creation that protects or reduces exposure to pollutants for all populations. Heavy metal (HM) contents in food and environmental media in Beijing, capital of China, were collected. Furthermore, on the basis of considering the bioavailability of HMs, we evaluated the multiple environmental routes and health risks to HMs in children and teenagers of eight age groups (2-<3, 3-<4, 4-<5, 5-<6, 6-<9, 9-<12, 12-<15, and 15-<18) in Beijing, China by Monte Carlo simulation approach. The main findings are as follows: lead exposure in children aged 2-<3 years exceeds the exposure dose (0.3 μg·kg-1·d-1) of 0.5 point reduction in intelligence quotient. Moreover, children aged 2-<3 and 6-<9 years have relatively high non-carcinogenic risk (NCR) of 1.32 and 1.30, respectively. The carcinogenic risk (CR) for children aged 6-<9 and 9-<12 years is 2.73×10-6 and 2.39×10-6, respectively. Specifically, the contributions of oral ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation to the NCR were 69.5%, 18.9%, and 11.6%, respectively. Moreover, the combined NCR contributions of copper, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic (As) were about 69.4%. The contributions of the above three routes to the CR were 93.4%, 4.1%, and 2.5%, in that order, with the largest CR contribution of As being about 92.0%. This study can provide new ideas for accurately assessing the exposure and health risks of HMs in the population, and we believe that it is necessary to update the national standards for food and soil based on the bioavailability of HMs.

The role of chemical fractionation in risk assessment of toxic metals: a review

The identification of highly toxic metals like Cd, Ni, Pb, Cr, Co or Cu in ambient particulate matter (PM) has garnered a lot of interest recently. Exposure to toxic metals, including carcinogenic ones, at levels above recommended limits, can significantly affect human health. Prolonged exposure to even trace amounts of toxic or essential metals can also have negative health impacts. In order to assess significant risks, it is crucial to govern the concentrations of bioavailable/bio-accessible metals that are available in PM. Estimating the total metal concentrations in PM is only an approximation of metal toxicity. This review provides an overview of various procedures for extracting soluble toxic metals from PM and the importance of chemical fractionation in risk assessment. It is observed that the environmental risk indices such as bioavailability index (BI), contamination factor (CF) and risk assessment code (RAC) are specifically influenced by the concentration of these metals in a particular fraction. Additionally, there is compelling evidence that health risks assessed using total metal concentrations may be overestimated, therefore, the metal toxicity assessment is more accurate and more sensitive to the concentration of the bioavailable/bio-accessible fraction than the total metal concentrations. Hence, chemical fractionation of toxic metals can serve as an effective tool for developing environmental protection laws and improving air quality monitoring programs for public health.

Decryption analysis of antimony pollution sources in PM2.5 through a multi-source isotope mixing model based on lead isotopes

Antimony (Sb) in PM_2.5 has attracted close attention as a new air pollutant due to its extensive use in daily life. The identification of antimony sources in PM_2.5 by scientific methods is important to control its pollution. In this study, the Sb and other elements concentrations and Pb isotopic compositions in PM_2.5 and possible pollution sources (soil, road dust, traffic emission, coal-fired fly ash, local factory emission dust and cement dust) were analyzed. The results showed that the Sb in the PM_2.5 samples had seasonal change. The enrichment factors of Sb in PM_2.5 samples were all above 100 in four seasons, which indicated anthropogenic pollution. The average value of potential ecological risk index was at extremely high-risk level greater than 320. Based on Pearson correlation coefficient and hierarchical cluster analysis results, the pollution sources of antimony and lead in PM_2.5 samples were highly consistent which means that Pb isotopes might be a new and feasible tracer for Sb pollution in air. The sources analysis results based on Pb isotopes indicated that the proportion of Pb and Sb from coal-fired fly ash was the highest in winter (47.7%) and inclined to road dust in spring (34.5%), but it was mainly from traffic emissions in summer and autumn (34.2% and 32.8%). This study showed that Pb isotope tracing can be applied to predict the potential pollution sources, and it was also a feasible substitute for tracing Sb pollution in PM_2.5.

Online Sequential Determination of Organic/Inorganic Lead Speciation in PM2.5 Using Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry

The information regarding the occurrence and abundance of lead (Pb) in PM2.5 is useful for the evaluation of air pollution status and tracing the pollution source. Herein, electrochemical mass spectrometry (EC-MS) for sequential determination of Pb species in PM2.5 samples without sample pretreatment has been developed using the combination of online sequential extraction with mass spectrometry (MS) detection. Four kinds of Pb species including water-soluble Pb compounds, fat-soluble Pb compounds, water/fat-insoluble Pb compounds, and a water/fat-insoluble Pb element were sequentially extracted from PM2.5 samples, in which water-soluble Pb compounds, fat-soluble Pb compounds, and water/fat-insoluble Pb compounds were extracted sequentially by elution using H₂O, CH₃OH, and EDTA-2Na as the eluent respectively, while the water/fat-insoluble Pb element was extracted by electrolysis using EDTA-2Na as the electrolyte. The extracted water-soluble Pb compounds, water/fat-insoluble Pb compounds, and water/fat-insoluble Pb element were transformed into EDTA-Pb in real time for online electrospray ionization mass spectrometry analysis, while the extracted fat-soluble Pb compounds were directly detected by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The advantages of the reported method include the obviation of sample pretreatment, high speed of analysis (<60 min/sample), low detection limit (0.16 pg), low sample consumption (30 μg), and high accuracy (>90%), which indicates the potential of this method for the rapid quantitative species detection of metals in environmental particulate matter samples.

Combining DGT with bioaccessibility methods as tool to estimate potential bioavailability and release of PTEs in the urban soil environment

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in urban soil environments pose a noticeable risk to both ecosystem and human health; however, only a fraction of the elemental content is available for biota. To better know the potential risk of PTEs in the urban soil environment, geochemical fractionation, bioaccessibility, and potential bioavailability of four PTEs (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) were investigated by the combined use of different methods. The results showed that a high non-residual chemical fraction is related to a high bioavailability of the selected elements. The ranges of labile concentration of Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in all sampling sites measured by diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) were 3.5-18.0, 14.2-26.5, 0.09-1.0, and 1.8-15.7 μg/L, respectively. The high non-residual contents pointed out a serious hazard to the urban environment. The bioaccessible concentrations in gastric and lung phases were closely positively correlated with DGT-measured content (r = 0.63-0.99, p < 0.05), suggesting the potential use of DGT for the prediction of PTEs risk to human health. Moreover, the correlation of DGT results with the soluble and reducible fractions of PTEs may allow DGT use for quick screenings of the PTEs fraction potentially mobilizable during flooding events in urban soil environments. Our study suggests that combing DGT, bioaccessibility and biogeochemical fractionation could provide a more accurate assessment of the urban environmental quality and be helpful for pollution control and urban planning.

Porphyra tenera Protects against PM2.5-Induced Cognitive Dysfunction with the Regulation of Gut Function

To evaluate the biological effects of Porphyra tenera (P. tenera), we tried to confirm the possibility that the intake of P. tenera could modulate cognitive and intestinal functions in PM_2.5-induced cognitive decline mice. P. tenera attenuated PM_2.5-induced learning and memory impairment through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects by regulating the mitochondrial function and TLR-initiated NF-κB signaling. In addition, P. tenera effectively alleviated Aβ production/tau phosphorylation by inhibiting the JNK phosphorylation. Also, the bioactive constituents of P. tenera determined the sulfated galactan, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), and chlorophyll derivatives. Moreover, the bioactive compounds of P. tenera by gut fermentation protected against gut dysbiosis and intestinal tight junction damage with a decrease in inflammatory response and short-chain fatty acid production. Based on these results, our findings suggest that P. tenera with sulfated galactan and MAAs is a potential material for cognitive function improvement.

Characterizing Atmospheric Brown Carbon and Its Emission Sources during Wintertime in Shanghai, China

Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) is a kind of organic aerosol that efficiently absorbs ultraviolet-visible light and has an impact on climate forcing. We conducted an in-depth field study on ambient aerosols at a monitoring point in Shanghai, China, aiming to investigate the potential emission sources, molecular structures, and the contributions to light absorptions of ambient BrC chromophores. The results indicated that nine molecules were identified as nitroaromatic compounds, five of which (4-nitrophenol, 4-nitrocatechol, 2-nitro-1-naphthol, 3-methyl-4-nitrocatechol, and 2-methyl-4-nitrophenol) usually came from biomass burning or were produced from the photo-oxidation of anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (e.g., toluene, benzene) under high-NOx conditions. 4-nitrophenol was the strongest BrC chromophore and accounted for 13% of the total aerosol light absorption at λ = 365 nm. The estimated light absorption of black carbon was approximately three times the value of methanol-soluble BrC at λ = 365 nm. The ratios of K+/OC and K+/EC, and the correlations with WSOC, OC, HULIS-C and K+, and MAE values of methanol extracts also indicated that the primary emissions from biomass burning contributed more aerosol light absorption compared to the secondary formation during the wintertime in Shanghai. Therefore, biomass burning control is still the most urgent strategy for reducing BrC in Shanghai.

Chemical Fractionation in Environmental Studies of Potentially Toxic Particulate-Bound Elements in Urban Air: A Critical Review

In recent years, studies of heavy metal air pollution have increasingly gone beyond determining total concentrations of individual toxic metals. Chemical fractionation of potentially toxic elements in airborne particles is becoming an important part of these studies. This review covers the articles that have been published over the last three decades. Attention was paid to the issue of atmospheric aerosol sampling, sample pretreatment, sequential extraction schemes and conditions of individual extractions. Geochemical forms of metals occurring in the air in urban areas were considered in detail. Based on the data sets from chemical fractionation of particulate matter samples by three sequential extraction procedures (SEPs)—Fernández Espinosa, BCR and Chester’s—the compilation of the chemical distribution patterns of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn was prepared. The human health risk posed by these toxic and/or carcinogenic elements via inhalation of atmospheric particles was estimated for two categories of polluted urban areas: the commonly encountered pollution level and the high pollution level.

PM2.5-Bound Heavy Metals in Southwestern China: Characterization, Sources, and Health Risks

The health risks of PM2.5-bound heavy metals have attracted extensive attention recently. In order to evaluate those deleterious effects on human health more accurately, and to propose proper measures to reduce health risks of air pollution, the conduction of a source-specific health risk assessment is necessary. Based on daily collected PM2.5 samples at different functional sites during winter 2019 in a megacity Chongqing, China, combining source apportionment results from PMF and health risk assessment from the U.S. EPA, the source-specific health risks from PM2.5-bound heavy metals were given. Six types of PM2.5 sources have been identified, coal burning (25.5%), motor vehicles (22.8%), industrial emissions (20.5%), biomass burning (15.9%), dust (7.8%), and ship emissions (7.5%). Results showed that the total hazard quotient (HQ) was 0.32 and the total carcinogenic risks (CR) were 2.09 × 10−6 for children and 8.36 × 10−6 for adults, implying certain risks for local residents. Industrial emissions related with Cr posed both the highest carcinogenic risk and noncarcinogenic risk (contributing 25% CR and 36% HQ). Coal combustion (associated with Cr, As, and Mn) contributed 15.46% CR and 20.64% HQ, while biomass burning and motor vehicles shared 19.99% and 19.05% of the total CR, respectively. This work indicated that health risks of air pollution sources were the combined effects of the source contribution and chemical components. In order to control the health risks of PM2.5 to the local residents, the priority of targeted emission sources should be adopted for industrial emissions, biomass burning, vehicle emissions, and coal combustion sources.

Source apportionment of heavy metals in sediments and soils in an interconnected river-soil system based on a composite fingerprint screening approach

Heavy metal pollution has been a global concern and key points of environmental pollution prevention and control due to the growing problems of urbanization and industrialization. Rapidly and correctly apportioning sources of heavy metal is still a great challenge because of the stability of source fingerprint and complex interaction of multiple contaminants and sources. In this study, we perform a combination of optimization of pollution source fingerprint and source apportionment through jointly utilizing two machine classification and screening methods for characterizing the pollution sources of heavy metal in the sediments of an urban river and its surrounding soils. Dominance-based rough set model (DRS), content optimization tools, and multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares model (MCR-WALS) were employed to screen representative pollution source samples, optimize pollution source fingerprint, and apportion the potential sources of heavy metals, respectively. Further, Support vector machine (SVM) was adopted to correspondence analysis results and pollution fingerprint based on the factor characteristics for achieving source apportionment accurately. Results showed that the pollution source pollution source fingerprints optimized by DRS and optimization tools are more representative and stable, and the results obtained by SVM and MCR-WALS are more accurate comparing with traditional methods. As whole, source apportionment suggested that printing and dyeing, chemical, electroplating, metal processing were the main origins of heavy metals in this area and the proportions of them in sediment and soil pollution sources were 67.05% and 28.43%, respectively. Besides, coal combustion was also the main sources of heavy metal pollution in soils, accounting about 34.16%. Results of the study can advance our knowledge to better understand the characterization of heavy metal pollution in the peri-urban ecosystem and to design effective targeted strategies for reducing heavy metal pollution diffusion.

Simulated biological fluids - a systematic review of their biological relevance and use in relation to inhalation toxicology of particles and fibres

The use of simulated biological fluids (SBFs) is a promising in vitro technique to better understand the release mechanisms and possible in vivo behaviour of materials, including fibres, metal-containing particles and nanomaterials. Applications of SBFs in dissolution tests allow a measure of material biopersistence or, conversely, bioaccessibility that in turn can provide a useful inference of a materials biodistribution, its acute and long-term toxicity, as well as its pathogenicity. Given the wide range of SBFs reported in the literature, a review was conducted, with a focus on fluids used to replicate environments that may be encountered upon material inhalation, including extracellular and intracellular compartments. The review aims to identify when a fluid design can replicate realistic biological conditions, demonstrate operation validation, and/or provide robustness and reproducibility. The studies examined highlight simulated lung fluids (SLFs) that have been shown to suitably replicate physiological conditions, and identify specific components that play a pivotal role in dissolution mechanisms and biological activity; including organic molecules, redox-active species and chelating agents. Material dissolution was not always driven by pH, and likewise not only driven by SLF composition; specific materials and formulations correspond to specific dissolution mechanisms. It is recommended that SLF developments focus on biological predictivity and if not practical, on better biological mimicry, as such an approach ensures results are more likely to reflect in vivo behaviour regardless of the material under investigation.

Contribution of PM2.5-Pb in atmospheric fallout to Pb accumulation in Chinese cabbage leaves via stomata

Foliar uptake of Pb is especially important when Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa spp. pekinensis), having a large leaf surface area, is cultivated in North China during seasons with heavy haze. However, the mechanisms of foliar Pb uptake via stomata by Chinese cabbage exposed to atmospheric fallout are unclear. A field experiment was conducted to explore the impacts of Pb in particulate matter with sizes ≤ 2.5 µm (PM_2.5-Pb) from atmospheric fallout to Pb accumulation in cabbage leaves through stomata. Cabbage varieties with low-Pb-accumulation (LPA) and high-Pb-accumulation (HPA) were examined using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb and ²⁰⁸Pb/²⁰⁷Pb ratios of PM_2.5, plants, and soil demonstrated that the major source of Pb in cabbage leaves was PM_2.5. The average width and length of the stomatal apertures were 7.14 and 15.61 µm for LPA cabbage and 8.10 and 16.64 µm for HPA cabbage, which are large enough for PM_2.5-Pb to enter the leaves. The HPA cabbage had significantly higher stomatal width-to-length ratios than the LPA cabbage, indicating that the former trapped much more PM_2.5-Pb and accumulated more Pb. These results clarify the contributions of the stomatal characteristics to PM_2.5-Pb accumulation in the edible parts of Chinese cabbage.

Selenium bioaccessibility in native seleniferous soil and associated plants: Comparison between in vitro assays and chemical extraction methods

Selenium (Se) bioaccessibility in soil and crops from seleniferous areas is closely relevant to Se intake risks of local residents. The current in vitro digestion methods used for Se bioaccessibility evaluation are single and inconsistent, and most of them are only for food and neglect soil. In this study, 14 Se-contaminated soils and their corresponding crops in Naore Village (seleniferous area) were used as the research objects. Four in vitro digestion assays, including Solubility Bioaccessibility Research Consortium method (SBRC), physiologically-based extraction test (PBET), in vitro gastrointestinal method (IVG), and Unified Bioaccessibility Method (UBM) were used to determine the bioaccessible Se concentration in soil and edible parts of crops. Results showed that the Se in natural seleniferous soil mainly existed in relatively stable forms, i.e., residual and Fe-Mn oxide-bound Se (average of 80%). Only 10.6% of the total Se was distributed in water-soluble and exchangeable Se fractions. The Se content in crops was significantly positively correlated with the organic-bound and phosphate-extractable Se contents in the corresponding soil (p < 0.05). The organic-bound Se was clearly a potentially bioavailable Se source in soil. The Se bioaccessibility in soil and crops measured using the four in vitro methods in gastric/intestinal digestions were in the same order, which was PBET > UBM > SBRC > IVG. Similar to the absorption and utilization of soil Se fractions by crops, the water-soluble, organic-bound and exchangeable Se in soil were the main contributors of bioaccessible Se in the digestive juices in various in vitro methods. Furthermore, the bioaccessible Se in crops and soil measured via PBET method demonstrated the most significant correlation between the total Se in crops and the phosphate-extractable Se in soil. Therefore, the PBET method was the optimum in vitro method for the evaluation of Se bioaccessibility in crops and soil.

The effect of air pollution on immunological, antioxidative and hematological parameters, and body condition of Eurasian tree sparrows

Air pollution constitutes potential threats to wildlife and human health; therefore, it must be monitored accurately. However, little attention has been given to understanding the toxicological effects induced by air pollution and the suitability of bird species as bioindicators. The Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus), a human commensal species, was used as a study model to examine toxic metal accumulation, retention of particulate matter (PM), immunological and antioxidant capacities, and hematological parameters in birds inhabiting those areas with relatively higher (Shijiazhuang city) or lower (Chengde city) levels of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ in China. Our results showed that Shijiazhuang birds had significantly more particle retention in the lungs and toxic metal (including aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, iron, manganese, and lead) accumulation in the feathers relative to Chengde birds. They also had lower superoxide dismutase, albumin, immunoglobulin M concentrations in the lung lavage fluid, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in the lungs and hearts. Furthermore, although they had higher proportions of microcytes, hypochromia, and polychromatic erythrocytes in the peripheral blood (a symptom of anemia), both populations exhibited comparable body conditions, white cell counts, heterophil and lymphocyte ratios, and plasma T-AOC and corticosterone levels. Therefore, our results not only confirmed that Shijiazhuang birds experienced a greater burden from environmental PM and toxic metals but also identified a suite of adverse effects of environmental pollution on immunological, antioxidative, and hematological parameters in multiple tissues. These findings contribute to our understanding of the physiological health consequences induced by PM exposure in wild animals. They suggest that free-living birds inhabiting urban areas could be used as bioindicators for evaluating the adverse effects induced by environmental pollution.

Geochemical phases of soil and the bioaccessibility of some elements in soils and vegetables from boron mines

The bioaccessibility of some elements (As, B, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn) in soils and vegetables was determined using the physiologically based extraction test. An investigation of the geochemical phases of soils through sequential extraction methods followed by ICP-MS detection was also undertaken. Samples were collected from Iskele, Begendikler and Yolbasi villages in the Bigadic region and Yildiz village in the Susurluk region of Balikesir province, Turkey. All of these villages are close to boron mines. Principal component analysis and correlation analysis demonstrated the interrelationship between the bioaccessibility values of these elements in the gastric and intestinal extracts of soils as well as the plant samples grown in those soils and the elements' concentrations in the different soil fractions. From the bioaccessible concentrations of the elements in the intestinal phases, it was shown that the amounts of As, B, Cu, Mn and Ni in some plant samples were higher than the recommended and tolerable values for human consumption. The bioaccessibilty of these elements in the soils and plants were statistically related with the concentrations of these elements in the labile phases of the soil. The methodology adopted here would be applicable to determining interactions between elements and soil fractions and the interrelationships between bioaccessibility data and soil fractions for any soil samples.

Human health risk assessment for toxic elements in the extreme ambient dust conditions observed in Sistan, Iran

This study evaluates the bioaccessibility and health risks related to heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn and metalloid As) in airborne dust samples (TSP and PM_2.5) in Zabol, Iran during the summer dust period, when peak concentration levels of PM are typically observed. High bioaccessibilities of carcinogenic metals in PM_2.5 (i.e. 53.3%, 48.6% and 47.6% for Ni, Cr and As, respectively) were calculated. The carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks were assessed for three exposure pathways (inhalation, ingestion and dermal contact), separately for children and adults. Non-carcinogenic inhalation risks were very high (Hazard Index: HI > 1) both for children and adults, while the carcinogenic risks were above the upper acceptable threshold of 10^-4 for adults and marginally close (5.0-8.4 × 10^-5) for children. High carcinogenic risks (>10^-4) were found for the ingestion pathway both for children and adults, while HI values > 1 (8.2) were estimated for children. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk estimates for dermal contact were also above the limits considered acceptable, except for the carcinogenic risk for children (7.6 × 10^-5). Higher non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks (integrated for all elements) were associated with the inhalation pathway in adults and children with the exception of carcinogenic risk for children, where the ingestion route remains the most important, while As was linked with the highest risks for nearly all exposure pathways. A comparative evaluation shows that health risks related with toxic elements in airborne particles in Sistan are among the highest reported in the world.

Synergistic effects of Fe-Mn binary oxide for gaseous arsenic removal in flue gas

High-efficient and economic sorbents are highly desired for arsenic (As) emission control in flue gas from coal-fired power plant. A series of Fe-Mn binary oxides were prepared by a facile method, and their behaviors for gaseous arsenic removal in flue gas were investigated. The binary oxide exhibited a remarkable synergistic effect for arsenic removal compared with Mn or Fe monometallic oxide. The possible effects of CO₂, NO, SO₂, and O₂ on the removal performance were also studied. The adsorption ability was excellent and stable in simulated flue gas conditions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-performance liquid chromatography atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (HPLC-AFS) coupling system were applied to analyze the species of surface-adsorbed arsenicals and soluble arsenicals. It was confirmed that the good sorption performance resulted from oxidation of As₂O₃ (As(III)) to As₂O₅ (As(V)) by Mn oxide and followed by efficient adsorption of As(V) on Fe oxide. Considering the toxicity of pentavalent arsenicals is lower than trivalent arsenicals, the oxidation of arsenic compounds can not only enhance its removal capacity but also decrease the toxicity of arsenicals after capture.

Application of cell-based biological bioassays for health risk assessment of PM2.5 exposure in three megacities, China

The determination of PM_2.5-induced biological response is essential for understanding the adverse health risk associated with PM_2.5 exposure. In this study, we conducted cell-based bioassays to measure the toxic effects of PM_2.5 exposure, including cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, genotoxicity and inflammatory response. The concentration-response relationship was analyzed by benchmark dose (BMD) modeling and the BMDL₁₀ was used to estimate the biological potency of PM_2.5 exposure. PM_2.5 samples were collected from three typical megacities of China (Beijing, BJ; Wuhan, WH; Guangzhou, GZ) in typical seasons (winter and summer). The total PM, water-soluble fractions (WSF), and organic extracts (OE) were prepared and subjected to examination of toxic effects. The biological potencies for cytotoxicity, oxidative stress and genotoxicity were generally higher in winter samples, while the inflammatory potency of PM_2.5 was higher in summer samples. The relative health risk (RHR) was determined by integration of the biological potencies and the cumulative exposure level, and the ranks of RHR were BJ-W > WH-W > BJ-S > WH-S > GZ-W > GZ-S. Notably, we note that different PM_2.5 compositions were associated with distinct biological effects, and the health effects distribution of PM_2.5 varied in regions and seasons. These findings demonstrate that the approach of integrated cell-based bioassays could be used for the evaluation of health effects of PM_2.5 exposure.

A follow-up study on the characterization and health risk assessment of heavy metals in ambient air particles emitted from a municipal waste incinerator in Zhejiang, China

To confirm our hypothesis that inhalation might be the primary exposure route of heavy metals for children living in proximity to a municipal waste incinerator (MWI), we conducted a one-year follow up study to characterize the distributions of heavy metals featured in different types of ambient air particles, including PM₁, PM_2.5 and PM₁₀, at two exposure sites near the MWI (E1 and E2) and one control site (C) in Zhejiang, China. Particle samples were collected by a mid-volume sampler and heavy metals were determined by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method. The mass concentrations of PM₁, PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ were 52.0, 85.8 and 100.3 μg/m³ at E1 site, while the concentrations were 40.2, 92.1 and 106.6 μg/m³ at E2 site and 33.4, 55.6 and 66.1 μg/m³ at C site, respectively. Both E1 and E2 had higher PM₁, PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ levels than C site. The levels of pollution were season dependent, with autumn having the highest levels of PM₁, PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ across all three sampling sites. Regarding the distributions of heavy metals, Pb accounted for the majority of the seven metals in all groups, ranging from 43.2% to 51.3%, followed by Mn that ranged from 22.0% to 32.0%. The Pb levels of PM₁, PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ in the MWI area were 22.6, 34.2 and 36.2 ng/m³, respectively, while Mn levels were 10.1, 20.0 and 23.5 ng/m³, respectively. The health risk assessment results suggested that residents were suffering high non-carcinogenic risk posed by MWI-emitted particle-bound toxic metals, as well as the high lifetime carcinogenic risk. This study revealed that ambient air, no matter whether near or far away from an MWI, bore more PM₁, PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ particles than general, non-polluted ambient air, especially in autumn.

PM2.5-bound potentially toxic elements (PTEs) fractions, bioavailability and health risks before and after coal limiting

Fractions, bioavailability, health risks of fine particulate maters (PM_2.5)-bound potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn) were investigated before and after coal limiting in Baoding city. The winter PM_2.5 samples were collected at different functional areas such as residential area (RA), industrial area (IA), suburb (SB), street (ST) and Botanical Garden Park (BG) in 2016 (coal dominated year) and 2017 (gas dominated year). The fractions and bioavailability of PTEs were determined and evaluated based on BCR sequential extraction. Health risks through inhalation exposure were evaluated by US EPA health risk assessment model. The results from different years and functional areas were compared and discussed. The fractions and bioavailability of PM_2.5-bound PTEs varied with functional areas. The percentages of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in acid-soluble fraction (F1-Cd and F1-Zn) to the total amount of Cd and Zn were low in BG samples (p < 0.05). Bioavailability of Cd were high in SB samples (p < 0.05). Total contents of PM-bound PTEs in 2017 generally decreased compared with 2016. The differences of fraction and bioavailability between 2016 and 2017 depended on the elements and areas. Higher proportions of copper (Cu) in acid-soluble fraction (F1-Cu) and bioavailability of Cu (p < 0.05) were found in 2017 samples. Significant differences were found just at IA and RA for Pb, Cd and Zn. Our results indicated that the health risks from inhalation exposure for PTEs in PM_2.5 declined about 11%-52% after the coal limiting in this city.

Comparison of arsenic fractions and health risks in PM2.5 before and after coal-gas replacement

Coal-Gas replacement project has been implemented to decrease haze pollution in China in recent years. Airborne arsenic (As) mostly originates from coal burning processes. It is noteworthy to compare the distribution of arsenic fraction in PM_2.5 before and after coal-gas replacement. Eighty PM_2.5 samples were collected in Baoding in December 2016 (coal dominated year) and December 2017 (gas dominated year) at different functional areas including residential area (RA), industrial area (IA), suburb (SB), roadside (ST) and Botanical Garden Park (BG). The fraction, bioavailability and health risk of As in the PM_2.5 samples were investigated and compared between these two years. Arsenic was mainly distributed in the non-specifically sorbed fraction (F1) and the residual fraction (F5). However, the proportion of F1 to the total As in 2017 was higher than that in 2016, while the proportion of As in the amorphous and poorly-crystalline hydrous oxides of Fe and Al fraction (F3) in 2017 was lower. The distributions of fraction and bioavailability showed temporal and spatial characteristics. The total concentration and bioavailability of As in SB and IA were significantly higher than those in RA, ST and BG. The BF (Bioavailability Factor) values of As ranged from 0.30 to 0.61. Health risk assessment indicated that the hazard quotient (HQ) and carcinogenic risk (CR) of As in PM_2.5 significantly decreased after coal-gas replacement.
