Targeting salt stress coping mechanisms for stress tolerance in Brassica: A research perspective

Assessment of the salt tolerance of diverse bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes during the early growth stage under hydroponic culture conditions

Objectives

Soil salinity affects the growth of crop plants, leading to reduced productivity, and is a major challenge for wheat production worldwide. Various adaptations and mitigation approaches in combination with tolerant wheat genotypes can be useful for the sustainability of crop production in saline environments. However, the development of salt-tolerant wheat genotypes is one of the best and most efficient solutions for obtaining desirable yields. Considering these issues, an investigation was carried out under hydroponic nutrient culture conditions to assess the genetic variability and selection of salt-tolerant wheat genotypes by categorizing inequitable morphophysiological and genetic variability as well as multivariate analysis.

Methods

To meet the objectives of this study, 100 wheat genotypes were tested hydroponically in 0 (control) and 15 dS m-1 salt solutions.

Conclusion

For all the wheat genotypes grown under saline conditions, the shoot length (SL), root length (RL), shoot fresh weight (SFW), root fresh weight (RFW), total fresh weight (TFW), shoot dry weight (SDW), root dry weight (RDW), and total dry weight (TDW) decreased significantly. Furthermore, significant variation was observed among the genotypes in terms of their characteristics only under saline conditions. In the case of genetic diversity analysis, a high genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV), genetic advance in the percentage of the mean (GAM) and high heritability (h2b) were recorded for all tested wheat genotypes based on the SDW, RDW and TDW. Correlation analysis for both genotypic and phenotypic relationships revealed strong positive correlations for TDW, SDW, TFW and SFW. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that TDW, TFW, SDW, and SFW were the most discriminative variables for the wheat genotypes, which was confirmed by discriminant function analysis (DFA). PCA-biplot analysis also revealed significant positive correlations between SDW and SFW and between TDW and TFW. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed for ten clusters based on the relative performance of the genotypes, where the genotypes were characterized into salt-tolerant, medium-salt-tolerant, medium-salt-susceptible and salt-susceptible groups. Among the genotypes, G11, G25 and G29 under cluster VII were categorized as salt tolerant based on their outstanding performance in terms of characteristics only under saline conditions. D2 analysis proved that the wheat genotypes of this cluster were highly divergent from the other cluster genotypes; as a result, these genotypes might be utilized as parents in the development of salt-tolerant wheat genotypes. The current study concluded that SDW and TDW could be employed as criteria for selecting and defining salt-tolerant genotypes during the early growth stage of wheat.

Multi-Omics Analysis of the Effects of Soil Amendment on Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) Photosynthesis under Drip Irrigation with Brackish Water

Drip irrigation with brackish water increases the risk of soil salinization while alleviating water shortage in arid areas. In order to alleviate soil salinity stress on crops, polymer soil amendments are increasingly used. But the regulation mechanism of a polymer soil amendment composed of polyacrylamide polyvinyl alcohol, and manganese sulfate (PPM) on rapeseed photosynthesis under drip irrigation with different types of brackish water is still unclear. In this field study, PPM was applied to study the responses of the rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) phenotype, photosynthetic physiology, transcriptomics, and metabolomics at the peak flowering stage under drip irrigation with water containing 6 g·L-1 NaCl (S) and Na2CO3 (A). The results showed that the inhibitory effect of the A treatment on rapeseed photosynthesis was greater than that of the S treatment, which was reflected in the higher Na+ content (73.30%) and lower photosynthetic-fluorescence parameters (6.30-61.54%) and antioxidant enzyme activity (53.13-77.10%) of the A-treated plants. The application of PPM increased the biomass (63.03-75.91%), photosynthetic parameters (10.55-34.06%), chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (33.83-62.52%), leaf pigment content (10.30-187.73%), and antioxidant enzyme activity (28.37-198.57%) under S and A treatments. However, the difference is that under the S treatment, PPM regulated the sulfur metabolism, carbon fixation and carbon metabolism pathways in rapeseed leaves. And it also regulated the photosynthesis-, oxidative phosphorylation-, and TCA cycle-related metabolic pathways in rapeseed leaves under A treatment. This study will provide new insights for the application of polymer materials to tackle the salinity stress on crops caused by drip irrigation with brackish water, and solve the difficulty in brackish water utilization.

Pectin demethylation-mediated cell wall Na+ retention positively regulates salt stress tolerance in oilseed rape

KEY MESSAGE

Integrated phenomics, ionomics, genomics, transcriptomics, and functional analyses present novel insights into the role of pectin demethylation-mediated cell wall Na+ retention in positively regulating salt tolerance in oilseed rape. Genetic variations in salt stress tolerance identified in rapeseed genotypes highlight the complicated regulatory mechanisms. Westar is ubiquitously used as a transgenic receptor cultivar, while ZS11 is widely grown as a high-production and good-quality cultivar. In this study, Westar was found to outperform ZS11 under salt stress. Through cell component isolation, non-invasive micro-test, X-ray energy spectrum analysis, and ionomic profile characterization, pectin demethylation-mediated cell wall Na+ retention was proposed to be a major regulator responsible for differential salt tolerance between Westar and ZS11. Integrated analyses of genome-wide DNA variations, differential expression profiling, and gene co-expression networks identified BnaC9.PME47, encoding a pectin methylesterase, as a positive regulator conferring salt tolerance in rapeseed. BnaC9.PME47, located in two reported QTL regions for salt tolerance, was strongly induced by salt stress and localized on the cell wall. Natural variation of the promoter regions conferred higher expression of BnaC9.PME47 in Westar than in several salt-sensitive rapeseed genotypes. Loss of function of AtPME47 resulted in the hypersensitivity of Arabidopsis plants to salt stress. The integrated multiomics analyses revealed novel insights into pectin demethylation-mediated cell wall Na+ retention in regulating differential salt tolerance in allotetraploid rapeseed genotypes. Furthermore, these analyses have provided key information regarding the rapid dissection of quantitative trait genes responsible for nutrient stress tolerance in plant species with complex genomes.

Selenium-Priming mediated growth and yield improvement of turnip under saline conditions

Salt toxicity is one of the foremost environmental stresses that declines nutrient uptake, photosynthetic activity and growth of plants resulting in a decrease in crop yield and quality. Seed priming has become an emergent strategy to alleviate abiotic stress and improve plant growth. During the current study, turnip seed priming with sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) was investigated for its ability to mitigate salt stress. Turnip (Brassica rapa L. var. Purple Top White Globe) seeds primed with 75, 100, and 125 μML-1 of Se were subjected to 200 mM salt stress under field conditions. Findings of the current field research demonstrated that salt toxicity declined seed germination, chlorophyll content, and gas exchange characteristics of B. rapa seedling. Whereas, Se-primed seeds showed higher germination rate and plant growth which may be attributed to the decreased level of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased synthesis of proline (36%) and besides increased total chlorophyll (46%) in applied turnip plants. Higher expression levels of genes encoding antioxidative activities (CAT, POD, SO,D and APX) mitigated oxidative stress induced by the salt toxicity. Additionally, Se treatment decreased Na+ content and enhanced K+ content resulting in elevated K+/Na+ ratio in the treated plants. The in-silico assessment revealed the interactive superiority of Se with antioxidant enzymes including CAT, POD, SOD, and APX as compared to sodium chloride (NaCl). Computational study of enzymes-Se and enzymes-NaCl molecules also revealed the stress ameliorative potential of Se through the presence of more Ramachandran-favored regions (94%) and higher docking affinities of Se (-6.3). The in-silico studies through molecular docking of Na2SeO3, NaCl, and ROS synthesizing enzymes (receptors) including cytochrome P450 (CYP), lipoxygenase (LOX), and xanthine oxidase (XO), also confirmed the salt stress ameliorative potential of Se in B. rapa. The increased Ca, P, Mg, and Zn nutrients uptake nutrients uptake in 100 μML-1 Se primed seedlings helped to adjust the stomatal conductivity (35%) intercellular CO2 concentration (32%), and photosynthetic activity (41%) resulting in enhancement of the yield attributes. More number of seeds per plant (6%), increased turnip weight (115 gm) root length (17.24 cm), root diameter (12 cm) as well as turnip yield increased by (9%tons ha-1) were recorded for 100 μML-1 Se treatment under salinity stress. Findings of the current research judiciously advocate the potential of Se seed priming for salt stress alleviation and growth improvement in B. rapa.

Salt and drought stress-mitigating approaches in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) to improve its performance and yield

MAIN CONCLUSION

Although sugar beet is a salt- and drought-tolerant crop, high salinity, and water deprivation significantly reduce its yield and growth. Several reports have demonstrated stress tolerance enhancement through stress-mitigating strategies including the exogenous application of osmolytes or metabolites, nanoparticles, seed treatments, breeding salt/drought-tolerant varieties. These approaches would assist in achieving sustainable yields despite global climatic changes. Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is an economically vital crop for ~ 30% of world sugar production. They also provide essential raw materials for bioethanol, animal fodder, pulp, pectin, and functional food-related industries. Due to fewer irrigation water requirements and shorter regeneration time than sugarcane, beet cultivation is spreading to subtropical climates from temperate climates. However, beet varieties from different geographical locations display different stress tolerance levels. Although sugar beet can endure moderate exposure to various abiotic stresses, including high salinity and drought, prolonged exposure to salt and drought stress causes a significant decrease in crop yield and production. Hence, plant biologists and agronomists have devised several strategies to mitigate the stress-induced damage to sugar beet cultivation. Recently, several studies substantiated that the exogenous application of osmolytes or metabolite substances can help plants overcome injuries induced by salt or drought stress. Furthermore, these compounds likely elicit different physio-biochemical impacts, including improving nutrient/ionic homeostasis, photosynthetic efficiency, strengthening defense response, and water status improvement under various abiotic stress conditions. In the current review, we compiled different stress-mitigating agricultural strategies, prospects, and future experiments that can secure sustainable yields for sugar beets despite high saline or drought conditions.

Bacterial-Mediated Salinity Stress Tolerance in Maize (Zea mays L.): A Fortunate Way toward Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture is threatened by salinity stress because of the low yield quality and low crop production. Rhizobacteria that promote plant growth modify physiological and molecular pathways to support plant development and reduce abiotic stresses. The recent study aimed to assess the tolerance capacity and impacts of Bacillus sp. PM31 on the growth, physiological, and molecular responses of maize to salinity stress. In comparison to uninoculated plants, the inoculation of Bacillus sp. PM31 improved the agro-morphological traits [shoot length (6%), root length (22%), plant height (16%), fresh weight (39%), dry weight (29%), leaf area (11%)], chlorophyll [Chl a (17%), Chl b (37%), total chl (22%)], carotenoids (15%), proteins (40%), sugars (43%), relative water (11%), flavonoids (22%), phenols (23%), radical scavenging capacity (13%), and antioxidants. The Bacillus sp. PM31-inoculated plants showed a reduction in the oxidative stress indicators [electrolyte leakage (12%), H2O2 (9%), and MDA (32%)] as compared to uninoculated plants under salinity and increased the level of osmolytes [free amino acids (36%), glycine betaine (17%), proline (11%)]. The enhancement of plant growth under salinity was further validated by the molecular profiling of Bacillus sp. PM31. Moreover, these physiological and molecular mechanisms were accompanied by the upregulation of stress-related genes (APX and SOD). Our study found that Bacillus sp. PM31 has a crucial and substantial role in reducing salinity stress through physiological and molecular processes, which may be used as an alternative approach to boost crop production and yield.

NtLTPI.38, a plasma membrane-localized protein, mediates lipid metabolism and salt tolerance in Nicotiana tabacum

Non-specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs) typically have conserved structural resemblance, low sequence identity, and broad biological functions in plant growth and stress resistance. Here, a plasma membrane-localized nsLTP, NtLTPI.38, was identified in tobacco plants. Multi-omics integrated analysis revealed that NtLTPI.38 overexpression or knock out significantly changed glycerophospholipid and glycerolipid metabolism pathways. NtLTPI.38 overexpression remarkably increased phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, triacylglycerol, and flavonoid levels, but decreased ceramides compared to wild type and mutant lines. Differentially expressed genes were associated with lipid metabolite and flavonoid synthesis. Many genes related to Ca²⁺ channels, abscisic acid (ABA) signal transduction, and ion transport pathways were upregulated in overexpressing plants. NtLTPI.38 overexpression in salt-stressed tobacco triggered a Ca²⁺ and K⁺ influx in leaves, increased the contents of chlorophyll, proline, flavonoids, and osmotic tolerance, and raised enzymatic antioxidant activities as well as the expression level of related genes. However, mutants accumulated more O₂^- and H₂O_2, exhibited ionic imbalance, gathered excess Na⁺, Cl^-, and malondialdehyde, with more severe ion leakage. Therefore, NtLTPI.38 enhanced salt tolerance in tobacco by regulating lipid and flavonoid synthesis, antioxidant activity, ion homeostasis, and ABA signaling pathways.

Mechanisms of salinity tolerance and their possible application in the breeding of vegetables

BACKGROUND

In dry and semi-arid areas, salinity is the most serious hazard to agriculture, which can affect plant growth and development adversely. Over-accumulation of Na⁺ in plant organs can cause an osmotic effect and an imbalance in nutrient uptake. However, its harmful impact can vary depending on genotype, period of exposure to stress, plant development stage, and concentration and content of salt. To overcome the unfavorable effect of salinity, plants have developed two kinds of tolerance strategies based on either minimizing the entrance of salts by the roots or administering their concentration and diffusion.

RESULTS

Having sufficient knowledge of Na⁺ accumulation mechanisms and an understanding of the function of genes involved in transport activity will present a new option to enhance the salinity tolerance of vegetables related to food security in arid regions. Considerable improvements in tolerance mechanisms can be employed for breeding vegetables with boosted yield performance under salt stress. A conventional breeding method demands exhaustive research work in crops, while new techniques of molecular breeding, such as cutting-edge molecular tools and CRISPR technology are now available in economically important vegetables and give a fair chance for the development of genetically modified organisms.

CONCLUSIONS

Therefore, this review highlights the molecular mechanisms of salinity tolerance, various molecular methods of breeding, and many sources of genetic variation for inducing tolerance to salinity stress.

Phytomelatonin: A master regulator for plant oxidative stress management

Phytomelatonin is the multifunctional molecule that governs a range of developmental processes in plants subjected to a plethora of environmental cues. It acts as an antioxidant molecule to regulate the oxidative burst through reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging. Moreover, it also activates stress-responsive genes followed by alleviating oxidation. Phytomelatonin also stimulates antioxidant enzymes that further regulate redox homeostasis in plants under adverse conditions. This multifunctional molecule also regulates different physiological processes of plants in terms of leaf senescence, seed germination, lateral root growth, photosynthesis, etc. Due to its versatile nature, it is regarded as a master regulator of plant cell physiology and it holds a crucial position in molecular signaling as well. Phytomelatonin mediated oxidative stress management occurs through a series of antioxidative defense systems, both enzymatic as well as non-enzymatic, along with the formation of an array of secondary defensive metabolites that counteract the stresses. These phytomelatonin-derived antioxidants reduce the lipid peroxidation and improve membrane integrity of the cells subjected to stress. Here in, the data from transcriptomic and omics approaches are summarized which help to identify the gene regulatory mechanisms involved in the regulation of redox homeostasis and oxidative stress management. Further, we also recap the signaling cascade underlying phytomelatonin interactions with both ROS and reactive nitrogen species (RNS)and their crosstalk. The discoveries related to phytomelatonin have shown that this regulatory master molecule is critical for plant cell physiology. The current review is focussed the role of phytomelatonin as a multifunctional molecule in plant stress management.

Microbes-mediated sulphur cycling in soil: Impact on soil fertility, crop production and environmental sustainability

Reduction in soil fertility and depletion of natural resources due to current intensive agricultural practices along with climate changes are the major constraints for crop productivity and global food security. Diverse microbial populations' inhabiting the soil and rhizosphere participate in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and thereby, improve soil fertility and plant health, and reduce the adverse impact of synthetic fertilizers on the environment. Sulphur is 4th most common crucial macronutrient required by all organisms including plants, animals, humans and microorganisms. Effective strategies are required to enhance sulphur content in crops for minimizing adverse effects of sulphur deficiency on plants and humans. Various microorganisms are involved in sulphur cycling in soil through oxidation, reduction, mineralization, and immobilization, and volatalization processes of diverse sulphur compounds. Some microorganisms possess the unique ability to oxidize sulphur compounds into plant utilizable sulphate (SO₄^2-) form. Considering the importance of sulphur as a nutrient for crops, many bacteria and fungi involved in sulphur cycling have been characterized from soil and rhizosphere. Some of these microbes have been found to positively affect plant growth and crop yield through multiple mechanisms including the enhanced mobilization of nutrients in soils (i.e., sulphate, phosphorus and nitrogen), production of growth-promoting hormones, inhibition of phytopathogens, protection against oxidative damage and mitigation of abiotic stresses. Application of these beneficial microbes as biofertilizers may reduce the conventional fertilizer application in soils. However, large-scale, well-designed, and long-term field trials are necessary to recommend the use of these microbes for increasing nutrient availability for growth and yield of crop plants. This review discusses the current knowledge regarding sulphur deficiency symptoms in plants, biogeochemical cycling of sulphur and inoculation effects of sulphur oxidizing microbes in improving plant biomass and crop yield in different crops.

Transcriptomic and functional characterization reveals CsHAK5;3 as a key player in K+ homeostasis in grafted cucumbers under saline conditions

Grafting can improve the salt tolerance of many crops. However, critical genes in scions responsive to rootstock under salt stress remain a mystery. We found that pumpkin rootstock decreased the content of Na⁺ by 70.24 %, increased the content of K⁺ by 25.9 %, and increased the K⁺/Na⁺ ratio by 366.0 % in cucumber scion leaves. RNA-seq analysis showed that ion transport-related genes were the key genes involved in salt stress tolerance in grafted cucumber. The identification and analysis of the expression of K⁺ transporter proteins in cucumber and pumpkin revealed six and five HAK5 members, respectively. The expression of CsHAK5;3 in cucumber was elevated in different graft combinations under salt stress and most notably in cucumber scion/pumpkin rootstock. CsHAK5;3 was localized to the plasma membrane, and a yeast complementation assay revealed that it can transport K⁺. CsHAK5;3 knockout in hairy root mutants decreased the K⁺ content of leaves (45.6 %) and roots (50.3 %), increased the Na⁺ content of leaves (29.3 %) and roots (34.8 %), and decreased the K⁺/Na⁺ ratio of the leaves (57.9 %) and roots (62.9 %) in cucumber. However, CsHAK5;3 overexpression in hairy roots increased the K⁺ content of the leaves (31.2 %) and roots (38.3 %), decreased the Na⁺ content of leaves (17.2 %) and roots (14.3 %), and increased the K⁺/Na⁺ ratio of leaves (58.9 %) and roots (61.6 %) in cucumber. In conclusion, CsHAK5;3 in cucumber can mediate K⁺ transport and is one of the key target pumpkin genes that enhance salt tolerance of cucumber grafted.

Nitrogen application alleviates salt stress by enhancing osmotic balance, ROS scavenging, and photosynthesis of rapeseed seedlings (Brassica napus)

Nitrogen application could alleviate salt stress on crops, but the specific physiological mechanism is still unclear. Therefore, in this study, a pot experiment was conducted to explore the effects of different application rates of nitrogen (0, 0.15, 0.30, and 0.45 g·kg^-1) on the growth parameters, osmotic adjustment, reactive oxygen species scavenging, and photosynthesis of rapeseed seedlings planted in the soils with different concentrations of sodium chloride (1.5, 3.5, 5.5, and 7.5 g·kg^-1). The results showed that nitrogen could alleviate the inhibition of salt on rapeseed growth, and improve the antioxidant enzyme activities and the contents of non-enzymatic substances, K⁺, soluble protein (SP), soluble sugar (SS), and proline. Besides, there was a significant correlation between the indexes of active oxygen scavenging system, osmoregulation system, and photosynthesis. Therefore, applying appropriate amount of nitrogen can promote the growth and development of rapeseed seedlings under salt stress, accelerate the scavenging of reactive oxygen species, maintain osmotic balance, and promote photosynthesis. This study will improve our understanding on the mechanism by which nitrogen application alleviates salt stress to crops.

Evaluation of Halophyte Biopotential as an Unused Natural Resource: The Case of Lobularia maritima

Halophytes are plant species widely distributed in saline habitats, such as beaches, postindustrial wastelands, irrigated lands, salt flats, and others. Excessive salt level, known to limit plant growth, is not harmful to halophytes, which have developed a variety of defense mechanisms allowing them to colonize harsh environments. Plants under stress are known to respond with several morpho-anatomical adaptations, but also to enhance the production of secondary metabolites to better cope with difficult conditions. Owing to these adaptations, halophytes are an interesting group of undemanding plants with a high potential for application in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Therefore, this review aims to present the characteristics of halophytes, describe changes in their gene expression, and discuss their synthesized metabolites of pharmacognostic and pharmacological significance. Lobularia maritima is characterized as a widely spread halophyte that has been shown to exhibit various pharmacological properties in vitro and in vivo. It is concluded that halophytes may become important sources of natural products for the treatment of various ailments and for supplementing the human diet with necessary non-nutrients and minerals. However, extensive studies are needed to deepen the knowledge of their biological potential in vivo, so that they can be introduced to the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Mitigating abiotic stress: microbiome engineering for improving agricultural production and environmental sustainability

The responses of plants to different abiotic stresses and mechanisms involved in their mitigation are discussed. Production of osmoprotectants, antioxidants, enzymes and other metabolites by beneficial microorganisms and their bioengineering ameliorates environmental stresses to improve food production. Progressive intensification of global agriculture, injudicious use of agrochemicals and change in climate conditions have deteriorated soil health, diminished the microbial biodiversity and resulted in environment pollution along with increase in biotic and abiotic stresses. Extreme weather conditions and erratic rains have further imposed additional stress for the growth and development of plants. Dominant abiotic stresses comprise drought, temperature, increased salinity, acidity, metal toxicity and nutrient starvation in soil, which severely limit crop production. For promoting sustainable crop production in environmentally challenging environments, use of beneficial microbes has emerged as a safer and sustainable means for mitigation of abiotic stresses resulting in improved crop productivity. These stress-tolerant microorganisms play an effective role against abiotic stresses by enhancing the antioxidant potential, improving nutrient acquisition, regulating the production of plant hormones, ACC deaminase, siderophore and exopolysaccharides and accumulating osmoprotectants and, thus, stimulating plant biomass and crop yield. In addition, bioengineering of beneficial microorganisms provides an innovative approach to enhance stress tolerance in plants. The use of genetically engineered stress-tolerant microbes as inoculants of crop plants may facilitate their use for enhanced nutrient cycling along with amelioration of abiotic stresses to improve food production for the ever-increasing population. In this chapter, an overview is provided about the current understanding of plant-bacterial interactions that help in alleviating abiotic stress in different crop systems in the face of climate change. This review largely focuses on the importance and need of sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches using beneficial microbes for ameliorating the environmental stresses in our agricultural systems.

Exogenous melatonin improved photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II by reversible phosphorylation of thylakoid proteins in wheat under osmotic stress

It has been well demonstrated that melatonin plays an important protective role in photosynthesis of plants under various environmental stresses, while the detailed mechanisms by which melatonin protects photosystem II (PSII) under environmental stress are still unclear. In the study, the effects of melatonin on photosynthetic efficiency, energy dissipation, PSII protein composition, and reversible phosphorylation of thylakoid proteins were investigated in wheat plants under osmotic stress. The results showed that osmotic stress significantly reduced pigment content, photochemical efficiency of PSII, oxygen-evolving activity, and dissipation of excess excitation energy, while 25 μM melatonin applications greatly alleviated their decline under osmotic stress. Western blot data of PSII proteins revealed that melatonin upregulated the levels of D1, Lhcb5, Lhcb6, PsbQ, and PsbS proteins in wheat exposed to osmotic stress. In addition, thylakoid membrane proteins were strongly phosphorylated in wheat under osmotic stress with or without melatonin. Furthermore, the results from PSII protein dephosphorylation showed that exogenous melatonin promoted the dephosphorylation of LCHII, CP43, and D1 under osmotic stress. Therefore, our findings suggest that melatonin can provide an effective protection for the photosynthetic apparatus by the regulation of PSII proteins and the reversible phosphorylation of thylakoid proteins under drought stress.

Ion absorption, distribution and salt tolerance threshold of three willow species under salt stress

To investigate the response mechanism and salt tolerance threshold of three willow seedlings (Salix matsudana, Salix gordejevii, Salix linearistipularis), the absorption, transport and distribution of salt ions (Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺) were studied under hydroponic conditions with different salt concentrations (CK, 171, 342, 513, and 684 mm) and treatment times (1, 3, 5, 8, 11, and 15 days). Salix linearistipularis has the weakest ability to maintain its apparent shape, while Salix matsudana has the strongest ability. The three plants have a certain Na⁺ interception ability, and the interception abilities of Salix matsudana and Salix gordejevii are higher than that of Salix linearistipularis. The leaf S _AK,Na of Salix linearistipularis were higher than those of Salix matsudana and Salix gordejevii. The leaf selection ability was the highest, and the selection ability of the root system was the lowest in Salix linearistipularis. The long-term low salt concentration and the short-term high salt concentration can increase the root and leaf salinity. Salix matsudana grows more stably in a long-term high-salt stress environment, and Salix gordejevii grows stably in a short-term high-salt stress environment. However, Salix linearistipularis is more suitable for planting as an indicative plant because of its sensitivity to salt stress. The root Na⁺ content of Salix matsudana and Salix gordejevii was 34.21 mg/g, which was the maximum root retention capacity. Once the accumulation of Na⁺ content in roots exceeds this value, the rejection capacity of roots is broken through, and the selective ion absorption capacity will rapidly become weak, which easily leads to the death of plants.

Micronutrient seed priming: new insights in ameliorating heavy metal stress

Plants need to survive with changing environmental conditions, be it different accessibility to water or nutrients, or attack by insects or pathogens. Few of these changes, especially heavy metal stress, can become more stressful and needed strong countermeasures to ensure survival of plants. Priming, a pre-sowing hydration treatment, involves pre-exposure of plants to an eliciting component which enhance the plant's tolerance to later stress events. By considering the role of micronutrients in aiding plants to cope up under adverse conditions, this review addresses various aspects of micronutrient seed priming in attenuating heavy metal stress. Priming using micronutrients is an adaptive strategy that boosts the defensive capacity of the plant by accumulating several active or inactive signaling proteins, which hold considerable importance in signal amplification against the triggered stimulus. Priming induced 'defence memory' persists in both present generation and its progeny. Therefore, it is considered a promising approach by seed technologist for commercial seed lots to enhance the vigour in terms of seed germination potential, productivity and strengthening resistance response against metalloid stress. The present review provides an overview regarding the potency of priming with micronutrient to ameliorate harmful effects of heavy metal stress, possible mechanism how attenuation is accomplished, role of priming in enhancing crop productivity and inducing defence memory against the metalloid stress stimulus.

Iron-Doped Biochar Regulated Soil Nickel Adsorption, Wheat Growth, Its Physiology and Elemental Concentration under Contrasting Abiotic Stresses

The prevalence of abiotic stresses hampers soil health and plant growth in most ecosystems. In this study, rice husk iron-enriched biochar (BC) was prepared and its superiority in terms of nutrients enrichment, porosity and different acidic functional group (O-H, C=O) relative to simple biochar was confirmed through scanning electron microscopic, X-ray fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared analysis. To further evaluate its nickel (Ni), salt (NaCl) and carbonate (CaCO3) stress mitigating impact on wheat physiology and biochemical attributes, a pot experiment was conducted using; BC (1%), Ni (0.5 mM NiNO3), Na (100 mM NaCl) and CO3 (100 mM CaCO3) and with twelve treatments; T1; Control, T2; NiNO3, T3; CaCO3, T4; NaCl, T5; BC, T6; Ni + BC, T7; CaCO3 + BC, T8; NaCl + BC, T9; Ni + CaCO3 + BC, T10; Ni + NaCl + BC, T11; CaCO3 + NaCl + BC, T12; Ni + NaCl + CaCO3 + BC. The Langmuir isotherm model revealed the maximum Ni adsorption capacity (2433 mg g−1) in treatments where Ni was applied with BC soil. Maximum soil DTPA-extractable Ni was found in the T9 treatment; however, Ni concentration was not reported in wheat roots while only trace amounts of Ni were found in wheat shoots with the T9 treatment. It was suggested that BC has the capacity to induce the immunization effect in plant roots by providing additional Fe so their ionic homeostasis and redox metabolism worked properly. This argument was further paved by the enhanced adsorption of these toxic ions in the presence of BC-favored wheat growth as indicated by maximum increases in shoot iron and potassium concentrations under Ni + CaCO3 + BC, relative to control. Furthermore, the decrease in shoot hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (20%) and malondialdehyde (32%) concentrations and increase in shoot ascorbate peroxidase (81%) and catalase (three-fold) activities under Ni + BC relative to Ni + NaCl + CaCO3 + BC controlled the cell membrane damage. In conclusion, BC proved to be an excellent amendment to reduce the toxic effects of Ni, NaCl and CaCO3 stresses and enhance wheat growth and nutrition.

Effects of Azorhizobium caulinodans and Piriformospora indica Co-Inoculation on Growth and Fruit Quality of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) under Salt Stress

Salt stress is a worldwide environmental signal, reducing the growth and yield of crops. To improve crop tolerance to salt, several beneficial microbes are utilized. Here, nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azorhizobium caulinodans and root endophytic fungus Piriformospora indica were used to inoculate tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) under salt stress, and the effects of the co-inoculation were investigated. Results showed that A. caulinodans colonized in the intercellular space in stems and roots of tomato plants, while P. indica colonized in the root cortex. Two weeks following salt treatment, co-inoculated tomato plants grew substantially taller and had larger stem base diameters. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and reduced and oxidized ascorbate and glutathione (i.e., AsA, DHA, GSH, and GSSG, respectively) concentrations along with the ratios of AsA/(AsA + DHA) and GSH/(GSH + GSSG) increased in the leaves of co-inoculated plants under salt stress. The co-inoculation significantly increased soluble proteins and AsA in fruits; however, concentrations of soluble sugars and proanthocyanins did not show significant changes, compared with NaCl only treatment. Data suggest that A. caulinodans and P. indica co-inoculation boosted tomato growth and improved the quality of tomato fruits under salt stress. O-inoculation of A. caulinodans and P. indica might be employed to enhance tomato plant salt tolerance.

The Characterization of Wheat Genotypes for Salinity Tolerance Using Morpho-Physiological Indices under Hydroponic Conditions

Salinity affects plant growth, development, yield, and is a big challenge for wheat growth across the globe. Possible feasible solution is creation of salt-tolerant material, genetic variation is a criterion to developing genetically superior individuals. To assess the genetic variation for salt tolerance, nationally and internationally-derived 81 wheat genotypes were selected and evaluated in 0- and 150-mM salt in nutritional culture at seedling stage. Results indicate that salinity levels reveal significant (p ≤ 0.01) differences for fresh root weight (RW), shoot length (SL), fresh shoot weight (SW), total plant length (TL), total fresh weight (TW), root/shoot weight ratio (RSWR), root/shoot length ratio (RSLR), and relative growth rate for weight (RGR-Wt). While, there was no difference for root length (RL). Hierarchical Clustering and Pairwise correlation analysis showed TW, RGR-Wt, SL, SW, and RW were positively correlated among themselves, whereas RL had poor correlations with all the traits except TL and RSLR. Hence, selection of SL can improve the performance of other parameters. Based on PCA analysis, SW and RGR-Wt were the major discriminative components for wheat genotypes. Present study explained that shoot related parameters could be used as a selection criterion to categorize salt-tolerant genotypes. Outperforming genotypes 1104 and 1106 in saline conditions could be used as parents in creation of salt-tolerant wheat genotypes, and parameters such as SL, SW, TW, and RGR-Wt for early screening will be important for creating salt-tolerant and high yielding wheat genotypes.

Genome-Wide Analysis of Invertase Gene Family, and Expression Profiling under Abiotic Stress Conditions in Potato

Simple Summary

Invertase genes are among the important genes responsible for carbon metabolism in plants, significantly contributing to plant development and stress responses. In this study, for the first time, we performed genome-wide analysis for Invertase gene family in potato, identified and conducted expression profiling in different tissues by RNA seq analysis and validated it by Q-PCR. We also performed invertase family genes expression profiling under drought, salt and heat stress to elucidate their involvement in stress responses. Findings of this study will be helpful for future functional and genetic studies not only in potato but also in other plants.

Abstract

The potato is one of the most important and valuable crops in terms of consumption worldwide. However, abiotic stressors are the critical delimiters for the growth and productivity of potato. Invertase genes play key roles in carbon metabolism, plant development, and responses to stress stimuli. Therefore, a comprehensive genome-wide identification, characterization and expression analysis of invertase genes was performed in the potato. The current study identified 19 invertase genes, randomly distributed throughout the potato genome. To further elucidate their evolutionary, functional and structural relationship within family and with other plant species, we performed sequence and phylogenetic analysis, which segregated invertase genes into two main groups based on their sequence homology. A total of 11 genes are included in acidic invertases and 8 genes are in neutral or alkaline invertases, elucidating their functional divergence. Tissue specific expression analyses (RNA sequencing and qRT-PCR) of different plant tissues showed differential expression pattern. Invertase genes have higher expression in flower, leaf, root and shoot tissues, while under abiotic stress conditions, the expression of the invertase gene is significantly upregulated. Results of this study revealed that vacuolar and cell wall destined invertases are mainly the functional member genes of the invertase family. This study provides comprehensive data and knowledge about StINV genes in Solanum tuberosum for future genetic and epigenetic studies.

Plant Salinity Stress Response and Nano-Enabled Plant Salt Tolerance

The area of salinized land is gradually expanding cross the globe. Salt stress seriously reduces the yield and quality of crops and endangers food supply to meet the demand of the increased population. The mechanisms underlying nano-enabled plant tolerance were discussed, including (1) maintaining ROS homeostasis, (2) improving plant's ability to exclude Na+ and to retain K+, (3) improving the production of nitric oxide, (4) increasing α-amylase activities to increase soluble sugar content, and (5) decreasing lipoxygenase activities to reduce membrane oxidative damage. The possible commonly employed mechanisms such as alleviating oxidative stress damage and maintaining ion homeostasis were highlighted. Further, the possible role of phytohormones and the molecular mechanisms in nano-enabled plant salt tolerance were discussed. Overall, this review paper aims to help the researchers from different field such as plant science and nanoscience to better understand possible new approaches to address salinity issues in agriculture.

MiRNA fine tuning for crop improvement: using advance computational models and biotechnological tools

MiRNAs modulate target genes expression at post-transcriptional levels, by reducing spatial abundance of mRNAs. MiRNAs regulats plant metabolism, and emerged as regulators of plant stress responses. Which make miRNAs promising candidates for fine tuning to affectively alter crop stress tolerance and other important traits. With recent advancements in the computational biology and biotechnology miRNAs structure and target prediction is possible resulting in pin point editing; miRNA modulation can be done by up or down regulating miRNAs using recently available biotechnological tools (CRISPR Cas9, TALENS and RNAi). In this review we have focused on miRNA biogenesis, miRNA roles in plant development, plant stress responses and roles in signaling pathways. Additionally we have discussed latest computational prediction models for miRNA to target gene interaction and biotechnological systems used recently for miRNA modulation. We have also highlighted setbacks and limitations in the way of miRNA modulation; providing entirely a new direction for improvement in plant genomics primarily focusing miRNAs.

Beneficial Microbes and Molecules for Mitigation of Soil Salinity in Brassica Species: A Review

Salt stress results from excessive salt accumulation in the soil can lead to a reduction in plant growth and yield. Due to climate change, in the future climatic pressures, changed precipitation cycles and increased temperature will increase the pressures on agriculture, including increasing severity of salt stress. Brassica species contains oilseed and vegetable crops with great economic importance. Advances in understanding the mechanisms of salt stress in Brassica plants have enabled the development of approaches to better induce plant defense mechanisms at the time of their occurrence through the use of beneficial microorganisms or molecules. Both endophytic and rhizospheric microbes contribute to the mitigation of abiotic stresses in Brassica plants by promoting the growth of their host under stress conditions. In this review we summarized so far reported microorganisms with beneficial effects on Brassica plants and their mode of action. Another approach in mitigating the harmful effect of soil salinity may involve the application of different molecules that are involved in the stress response of Brassica plants. We reviewed and summarized their potential mode of action, methods of application and pointed out further research directions.

Reactive Oxygen Species in Plants: From Source to Sink

Reactive oxygen species (ROS, partial reduction or derivatives of free radicals) are highly reactive, dangerous and can cause oxidative cell death. In addition to their role as toxic by-products of aerobic metabolism, ROS play a role in the control and regulation of biological processes such as growth, the cell cycle, programmed cell death, hormone signaling, biotic and abiotic stress reactions and development. ROS always arise in plants as a by-product of several metabolic processes that are located in different cell compartments, or as a result of the inevitable escape of electrons to oxygen from the electron transport activities of chloroplasts, mitochondria and plasma membranes. These reactive species are formed in chloroplasts, mitochondria, plasma membranes, peroxisomes, apoplasts, the endoplasmic reticulum and cell walls. The action of many non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants present in tissues is required for efficient scavenging of ROS generated during various environmental stressors. The current review provides an in-depth look at the fate of ROS in plants, a beneficial role in managing stress and other irregularities. The production sites are also explained with their negative effects. In addition, the biochemical properties and sources of ROS generation, capture systems, the influence of ROS on cell biochemistry and the crosstalk of ROS with other signaling molecules/pathways are discussed.

Salt responsive alternative splicing of a RING finger E3 ligase modulates the salt stress tolerance by fine-tuning the balance of COP9 signalosome subunit 5A

Increasing evidence points to the tight relationship between alternative splicing (AS) and the salt stress response in plants. However, the mechanisms linking these two phenomena remain unclear. In this study, we have found that Salt-Responsive Alternatively Spliced gene 1 (SRAS1), encoding a RING-Type E3 ligase, generates two splicing variants: SRAS1.1 and SRAS1.2, which exhibit opposing responses to salt stress. The salt stress-responsive AS event resulted in greater accumulation of SRAS1.1 and a lower level of SRAS1.2. Comprehensive phenotype analysis showed that overexpression of SRAS1.1 made the plants more tolerant to salt stress, whereas overexpression of SRAS1.2 made them more sensitive. In addition, we successfully identified the COP9 signalosome 5A (CSN5A) as the target of SRAS1. CSN5A is an essential player in the regulation of plant development and stress. The full-length SRAS1.1 promoted degradation of CSN5A by the 26S proteasome. By contrast, SRAS1.2 protected CSN5A by competing with SRAS1.1 on the same binding site. Thus, the salt stress-triggered AS controls the ratio of SRAS1.1/SRAS1.2 and switches on and off the degradation of CSN5A to balance the plant development and salt tolerance. Together, these results provide insights that salt-responsive AS acts as post-transcriptional regulation in mediating the function of E3 ligase.

High salinity severely affects plant growth and development, impairing crop production worldwide. E3 ligase is a stress-responsive regulator through ubiquitin-proteasome system for selective protein degradation. The E3s are regulated by transcriptional regulation and post-translational modifications. Here, we have discovered that stress-responsive AS acts as a post-transcriptional regulation modulating the function of E3 ligases. Intriguingly, the truncated proteins generated by salt-responsive AS play opposite roles compared with the full-length E3 ligase. The truncated isoform losing key domain could not degrade the target protein, instead, it interacts and competes with the E3 ligase through binding the same domain of the targets. This finding contributes significantly to a deeper mechanistic understanding of how AS regulates the function of E3 ligase in response to salt stress.

Ferulic Acid and Salicylic Acid Foliar Treatments Reduce Short-Term Salt Stress in Chinese Cabbage by Increasing Phenolic Compounds Accumulation and Photosynthetic Performance

Salinity stress is one of the most damaging abiotic stresses to plants, causing disturbances in physiological, biochemical, and metabolic processes. The exogenous application of natural metabolites is a useful strategy to reduce the adverse effects of stress on crops. We investigated the effect of foliar application of salicylic acid (SA) and ferulic acid (FA) (10-100 μM) on short-term salt-stressed (150 mM NaCl, 72 h) Chinese cabbage plants. Subsequently, proline level, photosynthetic performance, phenolic metabolites with special focus on selected phenolic acids (sinapic acid (SiA), FA, SA), flavonoids (quercetin (QUE), kaempferol (KAE)), and antioxidant activity were investigated in salt-stressed and phenolic acid-treated plants compared with the corresponding controls. Salt stress caused a significant increase in SA and proline contents, a decrease in phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, and photosynthetic performance, especially due to the impairment of PSI function. SA and FA treatments, with a concentration of 10 μM, had attenuated effects on salt-stressed plants, causing a decrease in proline and SA level, and indicating that the plants suffered less metabolic disturbance. Polyphenolic compounds, especially FA, SiA, KAE, and QUE, were increased in FA and SA treatments in salt-stressed plants. Consequently, antioxidant activities were increased, and photosynthetic performances were improved. FA resulted in a better ameliorative effect on salt stress compared to SA.

Identification of distinctive physiological and molecular responses to salt stress among tolerant and sensitive cultivars of broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. Italica)

BACKGROUND

Salt stress is one of the main constraints determining crop productivity, and therefore one of the main limitations for food production. The aim of this study was to characterize the salt stress response at the physiological and molecular level of different Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. Italica Plenck) cultivars that were previously characterized in field and greenhouse trials as salt sensitive or salt tolerant. This study aimed to identify functional and molecular traits capable of predicting the ability of uncharacterized lines to cope with salt stress. For this purpose, this study measured different physiological parameters, hormones and metabolites under control and salt stress conditions.

RESULTS

This study found significant differences among cultivars for stomatal conductance, transpiration, methionine, proline, threonine, abscisic acid, jasmonic acid and indolacetic acid. Salt tolerant cultivars were shown to accumulate less sodium and potassium in leaves and have a lower sodium to potassium ratio under salt stress. Analysis of primary metabolites indicated that salt tolerant cultivars have higher concentrations of several intermediates of the Krebs cycle and the substrates of some anaplerotic reactions.

CONCLUSIONS

This study has found that the energetic status of the plant, the sodium extrusion and the proline content are the limiting factors for broccoli tolerance to salt stress. Our results establish physiological and molecular traits useful as distinctive markers to predict salt tolerance in Broccoli or to design novel biotechnological or breeding strategies for improving broccoli tolerance to salt stress.

A Review of Recent Advances and Future Directions in the Management of Salinity Stress in Finger Millet

Salinity stress is a major environmental impediment affecting the growth and production of crops. Finger millet is an important cereal grown in many arid and semi-arid areas of the world characterized by erratic rainfall and scarcity of good-quality water. Finger millet salinity stress is caused by the accumulation of soluble salts due to irrigation without a proper drainage system, coupled with the underlying rocks having a high salt content, which leads to the salinization of arable land. This problem is projected to be exacerbated by climate change. The use of new and efficient strategies that provide stable salinity tolerance across a wide range of environments can guarantee sustainable production of finger millet in the future. In this review, we analyze the strategies that have been used for salinity stress management in finger millet production and discuss potential future directions toward the development of salt-tolerant finger millet varieties. This review also describes how advanced biotechnological tools are being used to develop salt-tolerant plants. The biotechnological techniques discussed in this review are simple to implement, have design flexibility, low cost, and highly efficient. This information provides insights into enhancing finger millet salinity tolerance and improving production.

Multiomics reveal pivotal roles of sodium translocation and compartmentation in regulating salinity resistance in allotetraploid rapeseed

The large size and complexity of the allotetraploid rapeseed (Brassica napus) genome present huge challenges for understanding salinity resistance in this important crop. In this study, we identified two rapeseed genotypes with significantly different degrees of salinity resistance and examined the underlying mechanisms using an integrated analysis of phenomics, ionomics, genomics, and transcriptomics. Under salinity, a higher accumulation of osmoregulation substances and better root-system architecture was observed in the resistant genotype, H159, than in the sensitive one, L339. A lower shoot Na+ concentration and a higher root vacuolar Na+ concentration indicated lower root-to-shoot translocation and higher compartmentation in H159 than in L339. Whole-genome re-sequencing (WGRS) and transcriptome sequencing identified numerous DNA variants and differentially expressed genes involved in abiotic stress responses and ion transport. Combining ionomics with transcriptomics identified plasma membrane-localized BnaC2.HKT1;1 and tonoplast-localized BnaC5.NHX2 as the central factors regulating differential root xylem unloading and vacuolar sequestration of Na+ between the two genotypes. Identification of polymorphisms by WGRS and PCR revealed two polymorphic MYB-binding sites in the promoter regions that might determine the differential gene expression of BnaC2.HKT1;1 and BnaC5.NHX2. Our multiomics approach thus identified core transporters involved in Na+ translocation and compartmentation that regulate salinity resistance in rapeseed. Our results may provide elite gene resources for the improvement of salinity resistance in this crop, and our multiomics approach can be applied to other similar studies.

5-Aminolevulinic Acid Improves Morphogenesis and Na+ Subcellular Distribution in the Apical Cells of Cucumis sativus L. Under Salinity Stress

Soil salinity causes damage to plants and a reduction in output. A natural plant growth regulator, 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), has been shown to promote plant growth under abiotic stress conditions. In the present study, we assessed the effects of exogenously applied ALA (25 mg L^-1) on the root architecture and Na⁺ distribution of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings under moderate NaCl stress (50 mmol L^-1). The results showed that exogenous ALA improved root length, root volume, root surface area, and cell activity in the root tips, which were inhibited under salt stress. In addition, although salinity stress increased the subcellular Na⁺ contents, such as those of the cell wall, nucleus, plastid, and mitochondria, ALA treatment reduced these Na⁺ contents, except the soluble fraction. Molecular biological analysis revealed that ALA application upregulated both the SOS1 and HA3 transcriptional and translational levels, which suggested that the excretion of Na⁺ into the cytoplasm cloud was promoted by exogenous ALA. Meanwhile, exogenously applied ALA also upregulated the gene and protein expression of NHX1 and VHA-A under salinity stress, which suggested that the compartmentalization of Na⁺ to the vacuole was enhanced. Overall, exogenous ALA mitigated the damage caused by NaCl in cucumber by enhancing Na⁺ redistribution and increasing the cytoactivity of root cells.

Integrative analysis of transcriptome and metabolome reveal mechanism of tolerance to salt stress in oat (Avena sativa L.)

Soil salinity is among the crucial factors that impact on crop productivity, including oat (Avena sativa L.). Herein, we used two distinct oat cultivars with varied salt tolerance levels to unravel adaptive responses to salt stress by metabolomic and transcriptomic characterization. Metabolomic profiling revealed 201 metabolites, including saccharides, amino acids, organic acids, and secondary metabolites. The levels of most saccharides and amino acids were elevated in Baiyan 2 (BY2) as well as in Baiyan 5 (BY5) exposed to salt stress. In the tolerant cultivar BY2 exposed to 150 mM NaCl, concentrations of most of the metabolites increased significantly, with sucrose increased by 38.34-fold, Sophorose increased by 314.15-fold and Isomaltose 2 increased by 25.76-fold. In the sensitive cultivar BY5, the concentrations of most metabolites increased after the plant was exposed to 150 mM NaCl but decreased after the plant was exposed to 300 mM NaCl. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that gene expressions in BY5 were significantly affected under exposure to 300 mM NaCl (34040 genes up-regulated and 14757 genes down-regulated). Assessment of metabolic pathways as well as KEGG enrichment revealed that salt stress interferes with the biosynthesis of two oat cultivars, including capacity expenditure and sugar metabolism. Most of the BY2 genes enhanced energy consumption (for example, glycolysis) and biosynthesis (for instance, starch and sugar metabolism) under salt stress. In contrast, genes in BY5 were found to be down-regulated, leading to the inhibition of energy consumption and biosynthesis, which may also be attributed to salt sensitivity in BY5. In addition, the modified Na⁺/K⁺ transporter genes expression is associated with the predominant ionic responses in BY2, which leads low concentration of Na⁺ and high K⁺ when exposed to high salt situations. These findings suggest that the varied defensive capacities of these two oat cultivars in response to salt stress are due to their variations in energy-expenditure strategy, synthesis of energy substances and ion transport in roots. Our present study offers a crucial reference for oat cultivation under saline soil.
