Coupling effects of nitrate reduction and sulfur oxidation in a subtropical marine mangrove ecosystem with Spartina alterniflora invasion

Enhancing nutrient absorption through the influence of mangrove ecosystem on flow rate and retention time in salt marshes

This study investigates the impact of pneumatophores (the aerial roots of Avicenna marina) on water flow rate, retention time, contact time, and consequently on nutrient absorption through the sediment in sub-tropical salt marshes. The goal is to realize how the density of mangroves in salt marshes influences the kinematic factors of streamflow at estuaries. To this end, a field experiment was carried out to assess nutrient and organic compound levels in the sediment and water samples, spanning six sampling stations along the Chabahar River discharging to the Chabahar Bay, Iran. Then, we delved into the influence of altering environmental parameters, such as density and geometry, on the kinematic features of the flow through statistical analysis and hydraulic modeling. The results showed that the aerial roots reduce the flow rate and increase both retention and contact times. The longest retention time was observed at station #5 due to increased vegetation density and decreased instream velocity. In addition, measurements of total organic matter, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen indicated that an extended contact time resulted in increased absorption flux to the stream by sediments. As a result, pneumatophores can serve as an effective sink for organic matter in ecotones in salt marshes.

Phthalate esters pollution in the leachate, soil, and water around a landfill near the sea, Iran

This investigation aimed to scrutinize the level of phthalate esters (PEs) in the landfill leachate of a coastal city in the north of the Persian Gulf and the sensitive ecosystem (soil and water) around it. Soil (two depths) and water samples were prepared from 5 stations in wet and dry seasons. The studied landfill leachate contained 114-303 μg/L of phthalates. The highest concentration of phthalates was related to bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (3257 ng/g) in the wet season at surface soil (0-5 cm) in the landfill site, while the lowest one (6 ng/g) belonged to dimethyl phthalate at sub-surface soil at 700 m from the landfill in the dry season. A significant change in the level of Σ6PEs in the dry (303 μg/L) and wet (114 μg/L) seasons (P ≤ 0.05) was observed for water samples. The PE concentrations in wet times were higher in all soil depths than in dry times. With increasing depth, the content of phthalates decreased in all studied environments. A direct relationship was observed between the phthalates concentration and the pH value of leachate/water and soil. The PEs concentration was linked to electrical conductivity (leachate: R2 = 0.65, P < 0.01 and surface soil: R2 = 0.77, P < 0.05) and the soil organic content. The ecological risk of di-n-butyl phthalate, benzyl butyl phthalate, bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, and di-n-octyl phthalate in the wet season was greater than one. The results showed that significant levels of phthalate esters are released from landfills to the surrounding environment, which requires adequate measures to maintain the health of the ecosystem and nearby residents.

Mangrove sediments are environmental hotspots for pathogenic protists

Mangrove sediments are unique ecosystems providing habitats for diverse organisms, especially microbial communities. However, little is known about the diversity and environmental risk of a critical group of microorganisms, the protists. To address this gap, we employed metagenome sequencing technologies to provide the first comprehensive view of the protistan community in the mangrove sediment. Our results surprisingly showed that parasitic protists dominated the protistan community in mangrove sediments, with an average abundance of 59.67%, one of the highest in all ecosystems on Earth. We also found that the relative abundance of protists decreased significantly (R = -0.21, p = 0.045) with latitude but increased with depths (R = 0.7099, p < 0.001). The parasitic communities were positively influenced by microbial (bacteria, fungi, and archaea) communities, including horizontal-scale and vertical-scale. In addition, sulfate and salinity had the most significant influence on the protistan community. Our findings provide new insights into our understanding of protistan variation in mangrove sediments, including abundance, composition, and possible functions, and indicate that mangrove sediments are hotspots for environmental pathogens, posing a potential risk to human health.

Leaf functional traits and resource use strategies facilitate the spread of invasive plant Parthenium hysterophorus across an elevational gradient in western Himalayas

Parthenium hysterophorus L. (Asteraceae) is a highly prevalent invasive species in subtropical regions across the world. It has recently been seen to shift from low (subtropical) to high (sub-temperate) elevations. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of research investigating the adaptive responses and the significance of leaf functional traits in promoting the expansion to high elevations. The current study investigated the variations and trade-offs among 14 leaf traits (structural, photosynthetic, and nutrient content) of P. hysterophorus across different elevations in the western Himalayas, India. Plots measuring 20 × 40 m were established at different elevations (700 m, 1100 m, 1400 m, and 1800 m) to collect leaf trait data for P. hysterophorus. Along the elevational gradient, significant variations were noticed in leaf morphological parameters, leaf nutrient content, and leaf photosynthetic parameters. Significant increases were observed in the specific leaf area, leaf thickness, and chlorophyll a, total chlorophyll and carotenoid content, as well as leaf nitrogen and phosphorus content with elevation. On the other hand, there were reductions in the amount of chlorophyll b, photosynthetic efficiency, leaf dry matter content, leaf mass per area, and leaf water content. The trait-trait relationships between leaf water content and dry weight and between leaf area and dry weight were stronger at higher elevations. The results show that leaf trait variability and trait-trait correlations are very important for sustaining plant fitness and growth rates in low-temperature, high-irradiance, resource-limited environments at relatively high elevations. To summarise, the findings suggest that P. hysterophorus can expand its range to higher elevations by broadening its functional niche through changes in leaf traits and resource utilisation strategies.

Climate and soil factors co-derive the functional traits variations in naturalized downy thorn apple (Datura innoxia Mill.) along the altitudinal gradient in the semi-arid environment

Plant functional traits are consistently linked with certain ecological factors (i.e., abiotic and biotic), determining which components of a plant species pool are assembled into local communities. In this sense, non-native naturalized plants show more plasticity of morphological traits by adopting new habitat (an ecological niche) of the invaded habitats. This study focuses on the biomass allocation pattern and consistent traits-environment linkages of a naturalized Datura innoxia plant population along the elevation gradient in NW, Pakistan. We sampled 120 plots of the downy thorn apple distributed in 12 vegetation stands with 18 morphological and functional biomass traits during the flowering season and were analyzed along the three elevation zones having altitude ranges from 634.85 m to 1405.3 m from sear level designated as Group I to III identified by Ward's agglomerative clustering strategy (WACS). Our results show that many morphological traits and biomass allocation in different parts varied significantly (p < 0.05) in the pair-wise comparisons along the elevation. Likewise, all plant traits decreased from lower (drought stress) to high elevation zones (moist zones), suggesting progressive adaptation of Datura innoxia with the natural vegetation in NW Pakistan. Similarly, the soil variable also corresponds with the trait's variation e.g., significant variations (P < 0.05) of soil organic matter, organic carbon, Nitrogen and Phosphorus was recorded. The trait-environment linkages were exposed by redundancy analysis (RDA) that was co-drive by topographic (elevation, r = -0.4897), edaphic (sand, r = -0.4565 and silt, r = 0.5855) and climatic factors. Nevertheless, the influences of climatic factors were stronger than soil variables that were strongly linked with elevation gradient. The study concludes that D. innoxia has adopted the prevailing environmental and climatic conditions, and further investigation is required to evaluate the effects of these factors on their phytochemical and medicinal value.

Global production patterns: Understanding the relationship between greenhouse gas emissions, agriculture greening and climate variability

Climate change due to increased greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in the atmosphere has been consistently observed since the mid-20th century. The profound influence of global climate change on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, encompassing carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), has established a vital feedback loop that contributes to further climate change. This intricate relationship necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the underlying feedback mechanisms. By examining the interactions between global climate change, soil, and GHG emissions, we can elucidate the complexities of CO2, CH4, and N2O dynamics and their implications. In this study, we evaluate the global climate change relationship with GHG globally in 246 countries. We find a robust positive association between climate and GHG emissions. By 2100, GHG emissions will increase in all G7 countries and China while decreasing in the United Kingdom based on current economic growth policies, resulting in a net global increase, suggesting that climate-driven increase in GHG and climate variations impact crop production loss due to soil impacts and not provide climate adaptation. The study highlights the diverse strategies employed by G7 countries in reducing GHG emissions, with France leveraging nuclear power, Germany focusing on renewables, and Italy targeting its industrial and transportation sectors. The UK and Japan are making significant progress in emission reduction through renewable energy, while the US and Canada face challenges due to their industrial activities and reliance on fossil fuels.

Synergistic degradation of Congo Red by hybrid advanced oxidation via ultraviolet light, persulfate, and hydrodynamic cavitation

In the present study, hybrid activation of sodium peroxydisulfate (PS) by hydrodynamic cavitation and ultraviolet radiation was investigated for Congo Red (CR) degradation. Experiments were conducted using the Box-Benken design on inlet pressure (2-6 bar), PS concentration (0-50 mg. L-1) and UV radiation power (0-32 W). According to the results, at the optimum point where the pressure, PS concentration and UV radiation power were equal to 4.5 bar, 30 mg. L-1 and 16 W respectively, 92.01% of decolorization was achieved. Among the investigated processes, HC/UV/PS was the best process with the rate constant and synergetic coefficient of 38.6 × 10-3 min-1 and 2.76, respectively. At the optimum conditions, increasing the pollutant concentration from 20 mg. L-1 to 80 mg. L-1 decrease degradation rate from 92.01 to 45.21. Presence of natural organic mater (NOM) in all concentrations inhibited the CR degradation. Quenching experiments revealed that in the HC/UV/PS hybrid AOP free radicals accounted for 63.4% of the CR degradation, while the contribution of sulfate (SRs) and hydroxyl radicals (HRs) was 53.1% and 46.9%, respectively.

Micro/nanoplastics: Critical review of their impacts on plants, interactions with other contaminants (antibiotics, heavy metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), and management strategies

Microplastic/nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) contamination is not only emerging threat to the agricultural system but also constitute global hazard to the environment worldwide. Recent review articles have addressed the environmental distribution of MPs/NPs and their single-exposure phytotoxicity in various plant species. However, the mechanisms of MPs/NPs-induced phytotoxicity in conjunction with that of other contaminants remain unknown, and there is a need for strategies to ameliorate such phytotoxicity. To address this, we comprehensively review the sources of MPs/NPs, their uptake by and effects on various plant species, and their phytotoxicity in conjunction with antibiotics, heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and other toxicants. We examine mechanisms to ameliorate MP/NP-induced phytotoxicity, including the use of phytohormones, biochar, and other plant-growth regulators. We discuss the effects of MPs/NPs -induced phytotoxicity in terms of its ability to inhibit plant growth and photosynthesis, disrupt nutrient metabolism, inhibit seed germination, promote oxidative stress, alter the antioxidant defense system, and induce genotoxicity. This review summarizes the novel strategies for mitigating MPs/NPs phytotoxicity, presents recent advances, and highlights research gaps, providing a foundation for future studies aimed at overcoming the emerging problem of MPs/NPs phytotoxicity in edible crops.

Spatial distribution and seasonal variation of trace hazardous elements contamination in the coastal environment

Groundwater is the second largest water source for daily consumption, only next to surface water resources. Groundwater has been extensively investigated for its pollution level in urban areas. The groundwater quality assessments in industrial areas associated with every urban landscape are still lacking. In order to examine the spatial distribution characteristics, pollution levels, and sources of trace metals in the densely populated Chennai coastal region of Tamilnadu, India, physicochemical parameters and trace element concentrations have been determined in groundwater. 55 groundwater samples from Tamil Nadu's coastal region were collected and analyzed for physicochemical parameters such as pH, (EC), (TDS), and (TH) during the pre-monsoon (June 2015) and post-monsoon (January 2016) seasons. We used trace elements and analyzed them in this study (Mg, Zn, Pb, Ni, Co, Cu, Cr, and Fe). Furthermore, anthropogenic input from industries and power plants exacerbates the pollution of Ni, Mg, Fe, and Mn. Due to evaporites and anthropogenic input, samples with excessive salinity, total hardness, and water quality are considered unsuitable for irrigation or drinking. The results demonstrated that seasonal, geogenic, and anthropogenic influences all have a significant impact on the heterogeneous chemistry of groundwater.

Biochar and saline soil: mitigation strategy by incapacitating the ecological threats to agricultural land

Soil salinity caused a widespread detrimental issue that hinders productivity in agriculture and ecological sustainability, while waste-derived soil amendments like biochar have drawn attention for their capacity to act as a mitigating agent, by enhancing the physical and chemical features of soil, and contributing to the recovery of agricultural waste resources. However, the information concerning biochar and salinity which affect the physicochemical characteristics of soils, crop physiology, and growth is limited. To investigate whether biochar mitigates the salinity stress on wheat crop seedlings, we grow them with salinity stress (120 mM), and biochar (20 tons ha-1), and its interactive effects. The soil properties of soil organic carbon (SOC), soil organic matter (SOM), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and soil available phosphorus (SAP) decreased in the saline soil by 36.71%, 46.97%, 26.31%, and 15.00%, while biochar treatment increased SOC, DOC, and SAP contents by 7.42%, 31.57%, and 15.00%, respectively. On the other hand, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) contents decreased in all the treatments compared to the control. The root growth traits, SPAD values, leaf nitrogen, photosynthetic parameters, antioxidant enzymes, and reactive oxygen species decreased in the saline treatment while increasing in the biochar and interactive treatment. Thus, these activities resulted in higher leaves and root biomass in the biochar treatment alone and interactive treatment of salinity and biochar. According to principal component analysis, redundancy analysis, and the mantel test, using biochar in conjunction with salinity treatment was found to be more effective than salinity treatment alone. The results of this study suggest that biochar can be used as a sustainable agricultural technique and a means of mitigation agent by lowering soil salinity while increasing the biomass of crops.

Metagenomic binning analyses of swine manure composting reveal mechanism of nitrogen cycle amendment using kaolin

The efficient control of nitrogen loss in composting and the enhancement of product quality have become prominent concerns in current research. The positive role of varying concentrations kaolin in reducing nitrogen loss during composting was revealed using metagenomic binning combined with reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The results indicated that the addition of 0.5 % kaolin significantly (P < 0.05) up-regulated the expression of nosZ and nifH on day 35, while concurrently reducing norB abundance, resulting in a reduction of NH3 and N2O emissions by 61.4 % and 17.5 %, respectively. Notably, this study represents the first investigation into the co-occurrence of nitrogen functional genes and heavy metal resistance genes within metagenomic assembly genomes during composting. Emerging evidence indicates that kaolin effectively impedes the binding of Cu/Zn to nirK and nosZ gene reductases through passivation. This study offers a novel approach to enhance compost quality and waste material utilization.

Unlocking the potential of biochar in the remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals for sustainable agriculture

Agricultural soils contaminated with heavy metals (HMs) impose a threat to the environmental and to human health. Amendment with biochar could be an eco-friendly and cost-effective option to decrease HMs in contaminated soil. This paper reviews the application of biochar as a soil amendment to immobilise HMs in contaminated soil. We discuss the technologies of its preparation, their specific properties, and effect on the bioavailability of HMs. Biochar stabilises HMs in contaminated soil, enhance the overall quality of the contaminated soil, and significantly reduce HM uptake by plants, making it an option in soil remediation for HM contamination. Biochar enhances the physical (e.g. bulk density, soil structure, water holding capacity), chemical (e.g. cation exchange capacity, pH, nutrient availability, ion exchange, complexes), and biological properties (e.g. microbial abundance, enzymatic activities) of contaminated soil. Biochar also enhances soil fertility, improves plant growth, and reduces the plant availability of HMs. Various field studies have shown that biochar application reduces the bioavailability of HMs from contaminated soil while increasing crop yield. The review highlights the positive effects of biochar by reducing HM bioavailability in contaminated soils. Future work is recommended to ensure that biochars offer a safe and sustainable solution to remediate soils contaminated with HMs.

Invasion mechanism of Spartina alterniflora by regulating soil sulfur and iron cycling and microbial composition in the Jiuduansha Wetland

Spartina alterniflora, an invasive plant widely distributed in China's coastal regions, has had a significant impact on the stability of wetland ecosystems and elemental biogeochemical cycles. The invasion of S. alterniflora has been found to lead to the accumulation of sulfides in the soil. The cycling of sulfur and iron in the soil is closely interconnected. Coastal estuarine wetlands are influenced by both freshwater in rivers and seawater tides, as well as the frequent variations in redox conditions caused by tidal fluctuations, which makes the cycling of sulfur and iron in the soil invaded by S. alterniflora more intricate. In this study, field surveys and laboratory experiments were conducted to explore the effects of S. alterniflora invasion and hydrological changes on the cycling of sulfur and iron as well as related functional microorganisms in the soil. The invasion of S. alterniflora showed an increase in soil reduced inorganic sulfur (RIS) components in both high and low marshes of Jiuduansha wetland, with higher content observed in summer and autumn. The tidal simulation experiments revealed abundant sulfate in seawater tidal conditions could promote the formation of acid volatile sulfides (AVS) in the soil of low marshes invaded by S. alterniflora and ensuring the continuous increase in AVS content. Diffusive gradients in-thin-films (DGT) technology indicated the existence of high-concentration soluble S2- enrichment zones in the soil of low marshes invaded by S. alterniflora, which may be related to S. alterniflora root exudates. Tidal action increased the relative abundance of sulfur-reducing bacteria (SRB) in the soil of low marshes, and under the influence of seawater tidal action, SRB exhibited higher relative abundance. However, S. alterniflora might inhibit the activity of iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB) in the soil of low marshes. In conclusion, S. alterniflora may enhance the sulfate reduction rate and promote the formation of free sulfides in tidal salt marsh ecosystems by releasing root exudates that stimulate the activity of SRB, while concurrently inhibiting the activity of FeRB and reducing their competition with SRB. This effect is particularly pronounced in low marshes under seawater tidal conditions. Thus, S. alterniflora is capable of rapidly invading tidal salt marshes by utilizing sulfides effectively.

Response to carvacrol monoterpene in the emergence of Allium cepa L. seeds exposed to salt stress

Abiotic stresses including sodium chloride (NaCl) are known to negatively affect plant physiology and seed germination by inducing a delay in establishing seedling emergence. The monoterpene carvacrol is the major component of several aromatic plants and seems to interfere with germination and seedling growth. In this study, we investigated whether treatment with carvacrol attenuates the effects of NaCl on the germination and development of Allium cepa, where biochemical parameters were also analyzed. The results showed that the Emergency Speed Index (ESI) was near to 2.0 in the control group. The groups NaCl, carvacrol alone, and in co-treatment with NaCl exhibited an ESI below 0.8, being significantly smaller when compared to the control. NaCl + carvacrol significantly inhibited seed emergence in relation to the NaCl group. Only the content of malondialdehyde was significantly altered by NaCl.

Transcriptome Analysis Reveals Novel Insights into the Hyperaccumulator Phytolacca acinosa Roxb. Responses to Cadmium Stress

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that causes serious damage to plant and human health. Phytolacca acinosa Roxb. has a large amount of aboveground biomass and a rapid growth rate, and it has been identified as a novel type of Cd hyperaccumulator that can be harnessed for phytoremediation. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the response of P. acinosa to Cd2+ stress remain largely unclear. In this study, the phenotype, biochemical, and physiological traits of P. acinosa seeds and seedlings were analyzed under different concentrations of Cd2+ treatments. The results showed higher Cd2+ tolerance of P. acinosa compared to common plants. Meanwhile, the Cd2+ content in shoots reached 449 mg/kg under 10 mg/L Cd2+ treatment, which was obviously higher than the threshold for Cd hyperaccumulators. To investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the adaptability of P. acinosa to Cd stress, RNA-Seq was used to examine transcriptional responses of P. acinosa to Cd stress. Transcriptome analysis found that 61 genes encoding TFs, 48 cell wall-related genes, 35 secondary metabolism-related genes, 133 membrane proteins and ion transporters, and 96 defense system-related genes were differentially expressed under Cd2+ stress, indicating that a series of genes were involved in Cd2+ stress, forming a complex signaling regulatory mechanism. These results provide new scientific evidence for elucidating the regulatory mechanisms of P. acinosa response to Cd2+ stress and new clues for the molecular breeding of heavy metal phytoremediation.

Exogenous application of jasmonates and brassinosteroids alleviates lead toxicity in bamboo by altering biochemical and physiological attributes

Exogenous application of phytohormones is getting promising results in alleviating abiotic stresses, particularly heavy metal (HMs). Jasmonate (JA) and brassinosteroid (BR) have crosstalk in bamboo plants, reflecting a burgeoning area of investigation. Lead (Pb) is the most common pollutant in the environment, adversely affecting plants and human health. The current study focused on the foliar application of 10 µM JA and 10 µM BR in both single and combination forms on bamboo plants grown under Pb stress (0, 50, 100, 150 µM) with a completely randomized design by four replications. The study found that applying 10 µM JA and 10 µM BR significantly improves growth and tolerance by reducing oxidative stress, reactive oxygen species including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 32.91%), superoxide radicals (O2-•, 33.9%), methylglyoxal (MG, 19%), membrane lipoperoxidation (25.66%), and electrolyte leakage (41.5%) while increasing antioxidant (SOD (18%), POD (13%), CAT (20%), APX (12%), and GR (19%)), non-antioxidant (total phenolics (7%), flavonols (12.3%), and tocopherols (13.8%)), and glyoxylate activity (GLyI (13%), GLyII (19%)), proline content (19%), plant metal chelating capacity (17.3%), photosynthetic pigments (16%), plant growth (10%), and biomass (12%). We found that JA and BR, in concert, boost bamboo species' Pb tolerance by enhancing antioxidant and glyoxalase cycles, ion chelation, and reducing metal translocation and accumulation. This conclusively demonstrates that utilizing a BR-JA combination form at 10 µM dose may have the potential to yield optimal efficiency in mitigating oxidative stress in bamboo plants.

Physiochemical Responses and Ecological Adaptations of Peach to Low-Temperature Stress: Assessing the Cold Resistance of Local Peach Varieties from Gansu, China

In recent years, extreme weather events have become increasingly frequent, and low winter temperatures have had a significant impact on peach cultivation. The selection of cold-resistant peach varieties is an effective solution to mitigate freezing damage. To comprehensively and accurately evaluate the cold resistance of peaches and screen for high cold resistance among Gansu local resources, nine different types of peach were selected as test resources to assess physiological, biochemical, and anatomical indices. Subsequently, 28 peach germplasms were evaluated using relevant indices. The semi-lethal temperature (LT50) was calculated by fitting the change curve of the electrolyte leakage index (ELI) with the Logistic equation; this can be used as an important index for identifying and evaluating the cold resistance of peach trees. The LT50 values ranged from -28.22 °C to -17.22 °C among the 28 tested resources; Dingjiaba Liguang Tao exhibited the lowest LT50 value at -28.22 °C, indicating its high level of cold resistance. The LT50 was positively correlated with the ELI and malondialdehyde (MDA) content with correlation coefficients of 0.894 and 0.863, respectively, while it was negatively correlated with the soluble sugar (SS), soluble protein (SP), and free proline (Pro) contents with correlation coefficients of -0.894, -0.721, and -0.863, respectively. The thicknesses of the xylem, cork layer, cork layer ratio (CLR) and thickness/cortex thickness (X/C) showed negative correlations (-0.694, -0.741, -0.822, -0.814, respectively). Finally, the membership function method was used to evaluate cold resistance based on the ELI, MDA, Pro, SP, SS, CLR, and xylem thickness/cortex thickness (X/C) indices. The average membership degree among all tested resources ranged from 0.17 to 0.61. Dingjiaba Liguang Tao emerged prominently in terms of high-cold-resistance (HR) membership value (0.61).

A new spatial estimation model and source apportionment of aliphatic hydrocarbons in coastal surface sediments of the Nayband Bay, Persian Gulf

Hydrocarbons, originating from oil and gas industries, are considered a potential risk for Nayband Bay, a natural marine park with extended mangroves, located on the north coastlines of the Persian Gulf, Iran. This paper determines the potential sources and spatial distribution of hydrocarbons, especially aliphatic hydrocarbons (AHCs), in Nayband Bay through the simultaneous application of three indices in the coastline surface sediments. To this end, a field study was conducted in the inter-tidal coastal zones and wetlands. Sediment samples were taken from surface layers along four transects with four sampling points at different distances from the gulf. The hydrocarbon compounds of the samples including AHCs, total petroleum hydrocarbons, and heavy metals (Ni, V as crude oil indicators) were analyzed and classified to discover the pollution indicators. Pearson pairwise correlation and cluster analyses along with pollution indices were employed to describe the spatial distribution pattern of hydrocarbons, identify hot spots, and determine the potential origin of AHCs. Different interpolation scenarios based on topographic and oceanic features were proposed to detect the spatial dynamics of AHCs. The results revealed that hydrocarbons mainly originated from anthropogenic sources including oil and gas industries located far from the affected area. It was also concluded that the long-distance pollution transfer was based on oceanic currents and wind direction in the bay. The proposed scenarios showed that the mean concentration values of total organic carbon and total organic material vary in the range 0.19 ppm to 0.4 ppm and 2.88 ppm to 3.20 ppm, respectively.

Coupled patterns of natural and anthropogenic resources in typical ecosystems in coastal areas of China

The coastal area of Yancheng, China, is one of the hotspots for ecological research. Under the coupling of human and natural ecosystems, the region has gradually evolved into a coexistence of aquatic, agricultural and mudflat ecosystems. What are the patterns of natural and artificial resource inputs and patterns of change in ecosystems? How can ecological flows be analyzed at a uniform scale? Here, we selected six typical local ecosystems, namely, rice‒wheat for enterprises (RWE), rice‒wheat for smallholder households (RWS), chrysanthemum‒wheat (CW), fish polyculture (FP), juvenile crab farming (JF) and clam polyculture (CP), and analyzed their energy flow flux and sustainability based on emergy theory. The results showed that anthropogenic resource inputs were higher than natural resource inputs in all ecosystems, and the inputs of aquatic ecosystems were greater than those of agroecosystems. The greatest total input was 2.0 E+17 seJ/ha/yr for FP, and the lowest was 1.9 E+16 seJ/ha/yr for RWE. The proportions of renewable and artificial inputs for RWE, RWS, CW, FP, JF and CP were 32.8% vs. 96.1%, 40.3% vs. 96.5%, 34.7% vs. 97.0%, 32.6% vs. 99.4%, 55.1% vs. 98.5%, and 62.5% vs. 98.6%, respectively. The highest input to agroecosystems was nitrogen fertilizer, while in JF and CP, it was water, and feed (63.3%) accounted for the highest percentage of input in FP. JF and CP had lower environmental loads and higher sustainability than other ecosystems, but this still represents a high input compared to agroecosystems. Human-led resource coupling profoundly affects ecosystem sustainability, and various thresholds of energy use and ecological sustainability need to be studied in depth. Continuous exploration of methods and mechanisms for the maintenance and evolution of ecosystems with low total inputs and low inputs of non-renewable resources can contribute to high-quality sustainable development of an area or region.

Future climate-driven drought events across Lake Urmia, Iran

Climate change has increased the vulnerability of arid and semi-arid regions to recurrent and prolonged meteorological droughts. In light of this, our study has sought to assess the nature of future meteorological drought in Lake Urmia basin, Iran, within the context of future climate projections. To achieve this, data from 54 general circulation models (GCMs) was calibrated against both in situ and Global Precipitation Climatology Centre datasets. These GCMs were then employed to project drought conditions expected over 2016-2046 under RCP2.6 and RCP8.5 as the most optimistic and pessimistic scenarios, respectively. To provide a comprehensive analysis, these RCPs were combined with two different time scale Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), leading to eight different scenarios. The SPI was calculated over two temporal scales for the past (1985-2015) and future (2016-2046), including the medium-term (SPI-6) and long-term (SPI-18) index. Results showed that while precipitation is expected to increase by up to 34%, parts of the basin are projected to face severe and prolonged droughts under both RCPs. The most severe drought event is expected to occur around 2045-2046 under the most pessimistic RCP8.5 scenario. Severe droughts with low frequency are also anticipated to increase under other scenarios. By characterizing meteorological drought conditions for Lake Urmia basin under future climate conditions, our findings call for urgent action for adaptation strategies to mitigate the future adverse effects of drought in this region and other regions facing similar challenges. Overall, this study provides valuable insight into the impacts of climate change on future droughts that can adversely influence water resources in arid and semi-arid regions.

The variations in gene expression of GAPDH in Ocimum basilicum cultivars under drought-induced stress conditions

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) holds a pivotal role within the glycolytic pathway of higher plants. It has garnered attention as a significant target protein in instances of oxidative stress, where it can engage in thiolation reactions within its active site. Numerous genes encoding cytosolic iterations of GAPDH have been identified and analyzed in specific plant species. This investigation was conducted to gain insights into GAPDH's function amidst drought-induced stress. Within this framework, the basil plant (Ocimum basilicum) was chosen for focused exploration, encompassing the cloning of the comprehensive cDNA of basil GAPDH (ObGAPDH) and scrutinizing its patterns of expression. The complete sequence of Ob-GAPDH spanned 1315 base pairs. The resultant protein derived from this sequence comprised 399 amino acids, projecting a molecular weight of approximately 42.54 kDa and an isoelectric point (pI) of 6.01. An examination of the evolutionary connections among various GAPDH proteins unveiled ObGAPDH's shared lineage with GAPDH proteins sourced from other plants, such as Salvia splendens and Sesamum indicum. Furthermore, computational methodologies were harnessed to predict the potential oxidative role of ObGAPDH in response to external signals. Molecular docking simulations illuminated the interaction between ObGAPDH and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a ligand. Scrutinizing the expression patterns of the ObGAPDH gene under conditions of water scarcity stress brought to light diverse levels of transcriptional activity. Collectively, these findings underscore the notion that the regulation of ObGAPDH expression is contingent upon both the specific plant cultivar and the presence of stress stemming from drought conditions.

Research on ecological restoration assessment and eco-economic development of sea area by introducing the K-means clustering algorithm

The research uses the K-means clustering algorithm to examine the correlation between ecological restoration assessment, economic development, and investment in sea areas. The study intends to shed light on the dynamics and relationships between these variables and offer insightful information for managing the coastal and marine environments. We have made important discoveries on the effects of ecological restoration and eco-economic development on research investment by thoroughly analyzing data from various indicators, including the ecological index, eco-economic variables, and geographical index. Our findings underscore the significance of protecting marine ecosystems while promoting economic growth by demonstrating the beneficial effects of ecological restoration initiatives on research investment in maritime regions. The report also emphasizes the critical role of eco-economic development in influencing research investment and advancing sustainable practices that balance economic growth and environmental preservation. The results highlight the need for coordinated efforts among local communities, government agencies, academic institutions, business stakeholders, and industry to create comprehensive programs prioritizing ecological restoration, economic development, and research spending. This holistic strategy can support technical advancement, economic diversification, and sustainable development in maritime regions. The study's findings emphasize the importance of coordinating research funding with ecological restoration and eco-economic growth for coastal communities and residents' long-term well-being. Policymakers are urged to prioritize investments in research infrastructure, programs that increase capability, and encouraging regulations that support an environment significant to research and innovation. Stakeholders can use the advantages of research investment, utilize the potential of sea areas, and support the accomplishment of sustainable development goals by implementing these ideas. This study contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical data and insights into the complex relationships between ecological restoration, economic growth, and research expenditures in maritime regions. This paper highlights the study's limitations to encourage further research on new variables and comparisons across various industries and areas. This study provides insights into the importance of incorporating ecological restoration, eco-economic development, and research investment for sustainable coastal and marine management.

Seasonal variation of the quality of groundwater resources for human consumption and industrial purposes in the central plain zone of Punjab, India

Due to environmental pollution, climate change, and anthropogenic activities, the judicious use and regular assessment of the quality of groundwater for industrial, agricultural, and drinking purposes had gained a lot of attention across the globe. To assess the seasonal suitability of groundwater based on hydrochemistry and different quality indices, groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for different physicochemical parameters. Our findings indicated that the pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness (TH), and calcium ion (Ca2+) content of groundwater were within acceptable limits of WHO and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) guidelines for drinking water. However, chloride content exceeded the acceptable levels, accounting for about 29.1% during the pre-monsoon and 15.3% during the post-monsoon period. Based on the water quality index (WQI), none of the water samples were deemed unsuitable for drinking purposes. However, when considering the synthetic pollution index (SPI), 100% of the samples were categorized as moderately polluted during both the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods. For industrial purpose suitability, 39.8 and 30.6% of the water samples had high corrosion tendency for pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, respectively. Additionally, 77.5-93.4% of the total water samples were slightly affected by salinization on the basis of Revelle index. Generally, the groundwater quality for drinking purposes meets the WHO and BIS guidelines, with high corrosion potential for industrial use and slight salinization concerns in the area.

Drought and heat stress on cotton genotypes suggested agro-physiological and biochemical features for climate resilience

This study aimed to investigate the impact of individual drought, heat, and combined drought and heat stress on twelve cotton genotypes, including eight tolerant and four susceptible genotypes. A field experiment was carried out by employing a randomized complete block split-plot design, with treatments (control, drought, heat, drought + heat), and cotton genotypes assigned to the main plots and sub-plots respectively. The results showed that the combined stress had a more severe impact on the yield and fiber quality of cotton genotypes compared to individual stresses. Among the studied genotypes, FB-Shaheen, FH-207, MNH-886, and White Gold exhibited superior performance in regard to agronomic and fiber quality characters under combined stress environments. Physiological parameters, including transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, relative water contents, and photosynthetic rate, were significantly reduced under combined stress. However, specific genotypes, MNH-886, FH-207, White Gold, and FB-Shaheen, demonstrated better maintenance of these parameters, indicating their enhanced tolerance to the combined stress. Furthermore, the accumulation of reactive oxygen species was more pronounced under combined stress compared to individual stressors. Tolerant genotypes showed lower levels of H2O2 and MDA accumulation, while susceptible genotypes exhibited higher levels of oxidative damage. Antioxidant enzyme activities, such as superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase, increased under combined stress, with tolerant genotypes displaying higher enzyme activities. Conversely, susceptible genotypes (AA-703, KZ 191, IR-6, and S-15) demonstrated lower increases in enzymatic activities under combined stress conditions. Biochemical traits, including proline, total phenolic content, flavonoids, and ascorbic acid, exhibited higher levels in resistant genotypes under combined stress, while sensitive genotypes displayed decreased levels of these traits. Additionally, chlorophyll a & b, and carotenoid levels were notably decreased under combined stress, with tolerant genotypes experiencing a lesser decrease compared to susceptible genotypes.

Machine learning prediction of tree species diversity using forest structure and environmental factors: a case study from the Hyrcanian forest, Iran

The Hyrcanian forest is a global biodiversity hotspot that harbors many endemic and endangered tree species, but its tree diversity is threatened by various human-induced disturbances, such as logging, grazing, and urbanization. To address this issue, we conducted a study using three machine learning methods, i.e., linear regression (LR), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM), to assess and predict tree species diversity within the forest. To do so, we collected an extensive dataset of forest structure and environmental factors from 2725 sample plots located throughout the forest. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index was used to quantify the tree species diversity for each plot. We found that basal area, tree density, and height of trees were the most important predictors of tree diversity, followed by diameter at breast height, elevation, slope, and aspect. We measured the performance of the models using the coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and percent of relative error index (PREI), and found RF as the best-performing model in both the training (RMSE = 0.143, R2 = 0.94, and PREI =  - 0.09) and validation (RMSE = 0.15, R2 = 0.94, and PREI =  - 0.09) phases. RF was able to generalize effectively to new data without losing much accuracy or explanatory power. SVM demonstrated a moderate performance training (training phase: RMSE = 0.23, R2 = 0.57, and PREI =  - 0.17) and (validation phase: RMSE = 0.36, R2 = 0.34, and PREI =  - 0.21) among the models, while LR performed the worst (training phase: RMSE = 0.41, R2 = 0.13, and PREI =  - 0.19) and (validation phase: RMSE = 0.41, R2 = 0.11, and PREI =  - 0.36). These findings have broad applications beyond this specific region and can contribute to promoting sustainable land use practices and conservation efforts in other ecosystems facing similar challenges.

The role of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria in strengthening plant resistance to fluoride toxicity: a review

A wide variety of bacteria are present in soil but in rhizospheric area, the majority of microbes helps plant in defending diseases and facilitate nutrient uptake. These microorganisms are supported by plants and they are known as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The PGPRs have the potential to replace chemical fertilizers in a way that is more advantageous for the environment. Fluoride (F) is one of the highly escalating, naturally present contaminants that can be hazardous for PGPRs because of its antibacterial capacity. The interactions of F with different bacterial species in groundwater systems are still not well understood. However, the interaction of PGPR with plants in the rhizosphere region reduces the detrimental effects of pollutants and increases plants' ability to endure abiotic stress. Many studies reveal that PGPRs have developed F defense mechanisms, which include efflux pumps, Intracellular sequestration, enzyme modifications, enhanced DNA repair mechanism, detoxification enzymes, ion transporter/antiporters, F riboswitches, and genetic mutations. These resistance characteristics are frequently discovered by isolating PGPRs from high F-contaminated areas or by exposing cells to fluoride in laboratory conditions. Numerous studies have identified F-resistant microorganisms that possess additional F transporters and duplicates of the well-known targets of F. Plants are prone to F accumulation despite the soil's low F content, which may negatively affect their growth and development. PGPRs can be used as efficient F bioremediators for the soil environment. Environmental biotechnology focuses on creating genetically modified rhizobacteria that can degrade F contaminants over time. The present review focuses on a thorough systemic analysis of contemporary biotechnological techniques, such as gene editing and manipulation methods, for improving plant-microbe interactions for F remediation and suggests the importance of PGPRs in improving soil health and reducing the detrimental effects of F toxicity. The most recent developments in the realm of microbial assistance in the treatment of F-contaminated environments are also highlighted.

Coupling of machine learning and remote sensing for soil salinity mapping in coastal area of Bangladesh

Soil salinity is a pressing issue for sustainable food security in coastal regions. However, the coupling of machine learning and remote sensing was seldom employed for soil salinity mapping in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. The research aims to estimate the soil salinity level in a southwestern coastal region of Bangladesh. Using the Landsat OLI images, 13 soil salinity indicators were calculated, and 241 samples of soil salinity data were collected from a secondary source. This study applied three distinct machine learning models (namely, random forest, bagging with random forest, and artificial neural network) to estimate soil salinity. The best model was subsequently used to categorize soil salinity zones into five distinct groups. According to the findings, the artificial neural network model has the highest area under the curve (0.921), indicating that it has the most potential to predict and detect soil salinity zones. The high soil salinity zone covers an area of 977.94 km2 or roughly 413.51% of the total study area. According to additional data, a moderate soil salinity zone (686.92 km2) covers 30.56% of Satkhira, while a low soil salinity zone (582.73 km2) covers 25.93% of the area. Since increased soil salinity adversely affects human health, agricultural production, etc., the study's findings will be an effective tool for policymakers in integrated coastal zone management in the southwestern coastal area of Bangladesh.

Comparative analysis of microbial community structure in different times of Panax ginseng Rhizosphere microbiome and soil properties under larch forest

BACKGROUND

Panax ginseng cultivated under the forest is popular because its shape and effective ingredients are similar to wild ginseng. The growth of P. ginseng in the larch forest is generally better than in the broad-leaved forest, and the incidence rate of diseases is low. Therefore, the selection of forest species is one of the basic factors in the successful cropping of P. ginseng.

METHODS

Illumina HiSeq high-throughput sequencing was used to analyze the 16S rRNA/ITS gene sequence of P. ginseng rhizosphere soil under larch forest to study the rhizosphere microbiome's diversity and community composition structure.

RESULTS

The species classification and richness of rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities in the same-aged P. ginseng were similar. Consistent with the soil system of commonly cultivated crops, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, Acidobacteriota, Verrucomicrobiota, Chloroflexi, and Basidiomycota, Ascomycota were the dominant phylum of bacteria and fungi, respectively. Compared with the soil without planting P. ginseng, the diversity of microorganisms and community structure of continuous planting for 2 years, 5 years, and 18 years of P. ginseng rhizosphere soil had little change. The accumulation levels of Ilyonectria, Fusarium, Gibberella, and Cylindrocarpon were not significantly increased with planting P. ginseng and the increased age of cropping P. ginseng.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study showed that the soil function of the larch forest was good, which provided a theoretical basis for the land selection and soil improvement of cultivating P. ginseng under the larch forest.

Genomic Analysis of Leptolyngbya boryana CZ1 Reveals Efficient Carbon Fixation Modules

Cyanobacteria, one of the most widespread photoautotrophic microorganisms on Earth, have evolved an inorganic CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM) to adapt to a variety of habitats, especially in CO2-limited environments. Leptolyngbya boryana, a filamentous cyanobacterium, is widespread in a variety of environments and is well adapted to low-inorganic-carbon environments. However, little is currently known about the CCM of L. boryana, in particular its efficient carbon fixation module. In this study, we isolated and purified the cyanobacterium CZ1 from the Xin'anjiang River basin and identified it as L. boryana by 16S rRNA sequencing. Genome analysis revealed that L. boryana CZ1 contains β-carboxysome shell proteins and form 1B of Rubisco, which is classify it as belonging to the β-cyanobacteria. Further analysis revealed that L. boryana CZ1 employs a fine CCM involving two CO2 uptake systems NDH-13 and NDH-14, three HCO3- transporters (SbtA, BicA, and BCT1), and two carboxysomal carbonic anhydrases. Notably, we found that NDH-13 and NDH-14 are located close to each other in the L. boryana CZ1 genome and are back-to-back with the ccm operon, which is a novel gene arrangement. In addition, L. boryana CZ1 encodes two high-affinity Na+/HCO3- symporters (SbtA1 and SbtA2), three low-affinity Na+-dependent HCO3- transporters (BicA1, BicA2, and BicA3), and a BCT1; it is rare for a single strain to encode all three bicarbonate transporters in such large numbers. Interestingly, L. boryana CZ1 also uniquely encodes two active carbonic anhydrases, CcaA1 and CcaA2, which are also rare. Taken together, all these results indicated that L. boryana CZ1 is more efficient at CO2 fixation. Moreover, compared with the reported CCM gene arrangement of cyanobacteria, the CCM-related gene distribution pattern of L. boryana CZ1 was completely different, indicating a novel gene organization structure. These results can enrich our understanding of the CCM-related gene arrangement of cyanobacteria, and provide data support for the subsequent improvement and increase in biomass through cyanobacterial photosynthesis.

Unravelling the molecular and biochemical responses in cotton plants to biochar and biofertilizer amendments for Pb toxicity mitigation

Over the past few years, there has been a rising interest in employing biochar (BC) and biofertilizers (BF) as a means of restoring soils that have been polluted by heavy metals. The primary objective of this study was to examine how the application of BC and BF affects the ability of cotton plants to withstand Pb toxicity at varying concentrations (0, 500, and 1000 mg/kg soil). The findings revealed that exposure to Pb stress, particularly at the 1000 mg/kg level, led to a decline in the growth and biomass of cotton plants. Pb toxicity triggered oxidative damage, impaired the photosynthetic apparatus, and diminished the levels of photosynthetic pigments. By increasing the expression of Rubisco-S, Rubisco-L, P5CR, and PRP5 genes and regulating proline metabolism, BC and BF increased the levels of proline and photosynthetic pigments and protected the photosynthetic apparatus. The application of BC and BF resulted in an upregulation of genes such as CuZnSOD, FeSOD, and APX1, as well as an increase in the activity of the glyoxalase system and antioxidant enzymes. These changes enhanced the antioxidant capacity of the plants and provided protection to membrane lipids from oxidative stress caused by Pb. The inclusion of BC and BF offered protection to photosynthesis and other essential intracellular processes in leaves by minimizing the transfer of Pb to leaves and promoting the accumulation of thiol compounds. This protective effect helped mitigate the negative impact of the toxic metal Pb on leaf function. By improving plant tolerance, reducing metal transfer, strengthening the antioxidant defense system, and enhancing the level of protective substances, these amendments show promise as valuable tools in tackling heavy metal pollution.

Effect of Co-Application of Azospirillum brasilense and Rhizobium pisi on Wheat Performance and Soil Nutrient Status under Deficit and Partial Root Drying Stress

Water management techniques are improving at the farm level, but they are not enough to deal with the limited availability of water and increased crop yields. Soil microbes play a vital role in nitrogen fixation, improving soil fertility and enhancing plant growth hormones under drought conditions. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the impact of water management combined with Azospirillum brasilense and Rhizobium pisi on wheat crop productivity and soil properties in dry regions. Three water management techniques were compared, normal irrigation as a control (C), deficit irrigation (DI), and partial root drying irrigation (PRD), together with the interaction of plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Experiments were conducted with six treatments in total: T1 = C + No PGPR, T2 = C + PGPR, T3 = DI + No PGPR, T4 = DI + PGPR, T5 = PRD + No PGPR, and T6 = PRD + PGPR. The highest grain yield was achieved in the control irrigation treatment using seeds inoculated with rhizobacteria, followed by control treatment without any inoculation, and the lowest was recorded with deficit irrigation without rhizobacteria inoculated in the seeds. However, PRD irrigation resulted in significantly higher plant growth and grain yield than the DI treatment. PGPR inoculation combined with PRD resulted in a 22% and 20% higher number of grains per spike, a 19% and 21% higher grain yield, and a 25% and 22% higher crop growth rate compared to rhizobacteria inoculation combined with the DI system in 2021-22 and 2022-23, respectively. This increase was due to the higher production of growth hormones and higher leaf area index under water-limited conditions. A greater leaf area index leads to a higher chlorophyll content and higher food production for plant growth.

Exploring the Impact of Salicylic Acid and Farmyard Manure on Soil Rhizospheric Properties and Cadmium Stress Alleviation in Maize (Zea mays L.)

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a growing environmental problem that negatively impacts plant growth and development, particularly in maize. In this research, the impact of farmyard manure (FYM) and salicylic acid (SA) on rhizospheric characteristics and the reduction of Cd stress in maize was examined at Government College (GC) University, Lahore, in 2022. The experiment was arranged with a randomized design, including three replications of 12 treatments (T1 = Control; T2 = Farmyard manure; T3 = Salicylic Acid; T4 = 100 mg/kg of soil Cd; T5 = 200 mg/kg of soil Cd; T6 = Farmyard manure + Salicylic acid; T7 = FYM + 100 mg/kg soil Cd; T8 = FYM + 200 mg/kg soil Cd; T9 = SA + 100 mg/kg soil Cd; T10 = SA + 200 mg/kg soil Cd; T11 = FYM + SA + 100 mg/kg soil Cd; T12 = FYM + SA + 200 mg/kg soil Cd). Results demonstrated that Cd stress negatively affected the maize plant and soil properties, but the application of SA and FYM was effective to mitigate the Cd stress up to a certain level. A reduction of 41.52%, 39.14%, and 39.94% in root length, length of the leaf, and crop growth rate was noticed, due to the Cd stress at 200 mg/kg soil, but this reduction was reduced to 18.83%, 10.35%, and 12.26%, respectively, when FYM and salicylic acid were applied as a combined application under the same stress level of Cd. The root biomass, leaf surface area, and length were all improved by SA and FYM, which enhanced the plant's capacity to absorb nutrients and improve growth under Cd stress. In conclusion, the use of salicylic acid together with farm manure can be an effective approach to mitigate Cd stress in maize crops.

Impacts of kinetin implementation on leaves, floral and root-related traits during seed production in hybrid rice under water deficiency

BACKGROUND

Water deficit is one of the most significant abiotic factors affecting rice and agricultural production worldwide. In hybrid rice, cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is an important technique for creating high-yielding crop based on heterosis. The phytohormone kinetin (Kin) regulates cell division in plant during the early stages of grain formation, as well as flow assimilation and osmotic regulation under water stress. The present study performed to estimate the effects of irrigation intervals (irrigation each six days (I6), nine days (I9), twelve days (I12) and fifteen days (I15) against continuous flooding (CF, each three days)) and kinetin exogenously application (control, 15 mg L-1 and 30 mg L-1) on hybrid rice (L1, IR69625A; L2, G46A and R, Giza 178 R) seed production.

RESULTS

Leaves traits (Chlorophyll content (CHC), relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance (SC), Leaf temperature (LT) and transpiration rate (TR)), floral traits such as style length (SL) and total stigma length (TSL), in addition to root traits (i.e., root length (RL), root volume (RV), root: shoot ratio (RSR), root thickness (RT), root xylem vessels number (RXVN) and root xylem vessel area (RXVA) were evaluated and a significant enhancement in most traits was observed. Applying 30 mg L-1 kinetin significantly and positively enhanced all growth, floral and roots traits (RV and RXVA recorded the most increased values by 14.8% and 23.9%, respectively) under prolonging irrigation intervals, in comparison to non-treated plants.

CONCLUSIONS

Subsequently, spraying kinetin exogenously on foliar could be an alternative method to reduce the harmful influences of water deficiency during seed production in hybrid rice.

Invasive Trends of Spartina alterniflora in the Southeastern Coast of China and Potential Distributional Impacts on Mangrove Forests

Mangrove forests are one of the most productive and seriously threatened ecosystems in the world. The widespread invasion of Spartina alterniflora has seriously imperiled the security of mangroves as well as coastal mudflat ecosystems. Based on a model evaluation index, we selected RF, GBM, and GLM as a predictive model for building a high-precision ensemble model. We used the species occurrence records combined with bioclimate, sea-land topography, and marine environmental factors to predict the potentially suitable habitats of mangrove forests and the potentially suitable invasive habitats of S. alterniflora in the southeastern coast of China. We then applied the invasion risk index (IRI) to assess the risk that S. alterniflora would invade mangrove forests. The results show that the suitable habitats for mangrove forests are mainly distributed along the coastal provinces of Guangdong, Hainan, and the eastern coast of Guangxi. The suitable invasive habitats for S. alterniflora are mainly distributed along the coast of Zhejiang, Fujian, and relatively less in the southern provinces. The high-risk areas for S. alterniflora invasion of mangrove forests are concentrated in Zhejiang and Fujian. Bioclimate variables are the most important variables affecting the survival and distribution of mangrove forests and S. alterniflora. Among them, temperature is the most important environmental variable determining the large-scale distribution of mangrove forests. Meanwhile, S. alterniflora is more sensitive to precipitation than temperature. Our results can provide scientific insights and references for mangrove forest conservation and control of S. alterniflora.
