Occurrence of microplastics in tap and bottled water, and food packaging: A narrative review on current knowledge

Reducing microplastics in tea infusions released from filter bags by pre-washing method: Quantitative evidences based on Raman imaging and Py-GC/MS

Microplastics released from plastic-based filter bags during tea brewing have attracted widespread attention. Laser confocal micro-Raman and direct classical least squares were used to identify and estimate micron-sized microplastics. Characteristic peaks from pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, and nylon 6 were selected to construct curves for quantification submicron-sized microplastics. The results showed that microplastics released from tea bags in the tea infusions ranged from 80 to 1288 pieces (micron-sized) and 0 to 63.755 μg (submicron-sized) per filter bag. Nylon 6 woven tea bags released far fewer microplastics than nonwoven filter bags. In particular, a simple strategy of three pre-washes with room temperature water significantly reduced microplastic residues with removal rates of 76 %-94 % (micron-sized) and 80 %-87 % (submicron-sized), respectively. The developed assay can be used for the quantitative evaluation of microplastics in tea infusions, and the pre-washing reduced the risk of human exposure to microplastics during tea consumption.

Silver nanostars arrayed on GO/MWCNT composite membranes for enrichment and SERS detection of polystyrene nanoplastics in water

Nanoplastic water contamination has become a critical environmental issue, highlighting the need for rapid and sensitive detection of nanoplastics. In this study, we aimed to prepare a graphene oxide (GO)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-silver nanostar (AgNS) multifunctional membrane using a simple vacuum filtration method for the enrichment and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection of polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics in water. AgNSs, selected for the size and shape of nanoplastics, have numerous exposed Raman hotspots on their surface, which exert a strong electromagnetic enhancement effect. AgNSs were filter-arrayed on GO/MWCNT composite membranes with excellent enrichment ability and chemical enhancement effects, resulting in the high sensitivity of GO/MWCNT-AgNS membranes. When the water samples flowed through the portable filtration device with GO/MWCNT-AgNS membranes, PS nanoplastics could be effectively enriched, and the retention rate for 50 nm PS nanoplastics was 97.1 %. Utilizing the strong SERS effect of the GO/MWCNT-AgNS membrane, we successfully detected PS nanoparticles with particle size in the range of 50-1000 nm and a minimum detection concentration of 5 × 10-5 mg/mL. In addition, we detected 50, 100, and 200 nm PS nanoplastics at concentrations as low as 5 × 10-5 mg/mL in real water samples using spiking experiments. These results indicate that the GO/MWCNT-AgNS membranes paired with a portable filtration device and Raman spectrometer can effectively enrich and rapidly detect PS nanoplastics in water, which has great potential for on-site sensitive water quality safety evaluation.

Neurotoxicities induced by micro/nanoplastics: A review focusing on the risks of neurological diseases

Pollution of micro/nano-plastics (MPs/NPs) is ubiquitously prevalent in the environment, leading to an unavoidable exposure of the human body. Despite the protection of the blood-brain barrier, MPs/NPs can be transferred and accumulated in the brain, which subsequently exert negative effects on the brain. Nevertheless, the potential neurodevelopmental and/or neurodegenerative risks of MPs/NPs remain largely unexplored. In this review, we provide a systematic overview of recent studies related to the neurotoxicity of MPs/NPs. It covers the environmental hazards and human exposure pathways, translocation and distribution into the brain, the neurotoxic effects, and the possible mechanisms of environmental MPs/NPs. MPs/NPs are widely found in different environment matrices, including air, water, soil, and human food. Ambient MPs/NPs can enter the human body by ingestion, inhalation and dermal contact, then be transferred into the brain via the blood circulation and nerve pathways. When MPs/NPs are present in the brain, they can initiate a series of molecular or cellular reactions that may harm the blood-brain barrier, cause oxidative stress, trigger inflammatory responses, affect acetylcholinesterase activity, lead to mitochondrial dysfunction, and impair autophagy. This can result in abnormal protein folding, loss of neurons, disruptions in neurotransmitters, and unusual behaviours, ultimately contributing to the initiation and progression of neurodegenerative changes and neurodevelopmental abnormalities. Key challenges and further research directions are also proposed in this review as more studies are needed to focus on the potential neurotoxicity of MPs/NPs under realistic conditions.

Atmospheric microplastic deposition associated with GDP and population growth: Insights from megacities in northern China

Microplastic (MP) pollution is evolving into one of the most pressing environmental concerns worldwide. This study assessed the impact of economic activities on atmospheric MP pollution across 17 megacities in northern China, analyzing the correlation between the deposition flux of atmospheric MPs and variables such as city population, gross domestic product (GDP), and industrial structure. The results have shown that the MP pollution is obviously impacted by human activities related to increased GDP, population, as well as tertiary service sector, in which the MP pollution shows most close relationship with the GDP growth. Polypropylene, polyamide, polyurethane, and polyethylene were identified as the primary components of atmospheric MPs. The average particle size of MPs in atmospheric dustfall is 78.3 µm, and the frequency of MP particles increases as the particle size decreases. The findings highlight the complex relationship between socio-economic development and atmospheric MP accumulation, providing essential insights for the formulation of targeted emission reduction strategies.

Global prevalence of microplastics in tap water systems: Abundance, characteristics, drivers and knowledge gaps

Tap water is a main route for human direct exposure to microplastics (MPs). This study recompiled baseline data from 34 countries to assess the current status and drivers of MP contamination in global tap water systems (TWS). It was shown that MPs were detected in 87 % of 1148 samples, suggesting the widespread occurrence of MPs in TWS. The detected concentrations of MPs spanned seven orders of magnitude and followed the linearized log-normal distribution (MSE = 0.035, R2 = 0.965), with cumulative concentrations at 5th, 50th and 95th percentiles of 0.028, 4.491 and 728.105 items/L, respectively. The morphological characteristics were further investigated, indicating that particles smaller than 50 μm dominated in global TWS, with fragment, polyester and transparent as the most common shape, composition and color of MPs, respectively. Subsequently, the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) algorithm was implemented to quantify the importance of variables affecting the MP abundance in global TWS, showing that the lower particle size limit was the most important variables. Subgroup analysis revealed that the concentration of MPs counted at the size limit of 1 μm was >20 times higher than that above 1 μm. Ultimately, current knowledge gaps and future research needs were elucidated.

Evaluation of phthalate migration potential in vacuum-packed

In recent years, the presence and migration of PAEs in packaging materials and consumer products has become a serious concern. Based on this concern, the aim of our study is to determine the possible migration potential and speed of PAEs in benthic fish stored in vacuum packaging, as well as to monitor the storage time and type as well as polyethylene (PE) polymer detection.As a result of the analysis performed by µ-Raman spectroscopy, 1 microplastic (MP) of 6 µm in size was determined on the 30th day of storage in whiting fish muscle and the polymer type was found to be Polyethylene (PE) (low density polyethylene: LDPE). Depending on the storage time of the packaging used in the vacuum packaging process, it has been determined that its chemical composition is affected by temperature and different types of polymers are formed. 10 types of PAEs were identified in the packaging material and stored flesh fish: DIBP, DBP, DPENP, DHEXP, BBP, DEHP, DCHP, DNOP, DINP and DDP. While the most dominant PAEs in the packaging material were determined as DEHP, the most dominant PAEs in fish meat were recorded as BBP and the lowest as DMP. The findings provide a motivating model for monitoring the presence and migration of PAEs in foods, while filling an important gap in maintaining a safe food chain.

Interactions between inhalable aged microplastics and lung surfactant: Potential pulmonary health risks

The relationship between microplastics (MPs) and human respiratory health has garnered significant attention since inhalation constitutes the primary pathway for atmospheric MP exposure. While recent studies have revealed respiratory risks associated with MPs, virgin MPs used as plastic surrogates in these experiments did not represent the MPs that occur naturally and that undergo aging effects. Thus, the effects of aged MPs on respiratory health remain unknown. We herein analyzed the interaction between inhalable aged MPs with lung surfactant (LS) extracted from porcine lungs vis-à-vis interfacial chemistry employing in-vitro experiments, and explored oxidative damage induced by aged MPs in simulated lung fluid (SLF) and the underlying mechanisms of action. Our results showed that aged MPs significantly increased the surface tension of the LS, accompanied by a diminution in its foaming ability. The stronger adsorptive capacity of the aged MPs toward the phospholipids of LS appeared to produce increased surface tension, while the change in foaming ability might have resulted from a variation in the protein secondary structure and the adsorption of proteins onto MPs. The adsorption of phospholipid and protein components then led to the aggregation of MPs in SLF, where the aged MPs exhibited smaller hydrodynamic diameters in comparison with the unaged MPs, likely interacting with biomolecules in bodily fluids to exacerbate health hazards. Persistent free radicals were also formed on aged MPs, inducing the formation of reactive oxygen species such as superoxide radicals (O2•-), hydrogen peroxide (HOOH), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH); this would lead to LS lipid peroxidation and protein damage and increase the risk of respiratory disease. Our investigation was the first-ever to reveal a potential toxic effect of aged MPs and their actions on the human respiratory system, of great significance in understanding the risk of inhaled MPs on lung health.

Microplastic pollution in urban stormwater inlet sediments influenced by land use type of runoff drainage area

Since the urban stormwater inlet (USI) acts as a link in the migration of microplastics (MPs) in stormwater, sufficient information on MPs in USI sediments is very important for understanding urban diffuse microplastic pollution. In this study, the abundance and characteristics of MPs in the USI sediments of Ma'anshan City, China, were analyzed based on urban land use type. MPs were prevalent in the USI sediments, with the average abundances of 536.77 ± 313.92 items·kg-1 for commercial areas, 505.64 ± 400.82 items·kg-1 for campuses, 694.71 ± 219.95 items·kg-1 for industrial areas, 526.41 ± 152.34 items·kg-1 for residential areas, and 1107.75 ± 422.10 items·kg-1 for main roads, indicating a high microplastic pollution in the USI sediments from main roads. The microplastic polymers were mainly polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polystyrene (PS), accounting for 46.75 %-100.00 %, with PP MPs being the most abundant. Fiber MPs had the highest proportion in USI sediments from both campuses (35.30 %) and industrial areas (38.19 %), while film MPs were the most abundant for both commercial areas (39.91 %) and residential areas (35.65 %). The average proportions of fiber (27.29 %), fragment (29.18 %), and film (28.68 %) were almost equal for main roads, unlike other land use types. Except for campuses, transparent MPs were the most common for all land use types, with average proportions of 29.60 %-42.70 %. The proportions of MPs with sizes of <1000 μm were 72.54 % for commercial areas, 77.11 % for campuses, 76.05 % for industrial areas, 70.76 % for residential areas, and 74.29 % for main roads, respectively, with a consistent result with previous study that the MPs of <1000 μm are the predominant in the environment. This study enriches the knowledge of microplastic pollution in USI sediments and will benefit the mitigation of diffuse microplastic pollution.

Microplastics and associated chemicals in drinking water: A review of their occurrence and human health implications

Microplastics (MPs) have entered drinking water (DW) via various pathways, raising concerns about their potential health impacts. This study provides a comprehensive review of MP-associated chemicals, such as oligomers, plasticizers, stabilizers, and ultraviolet (UV) filters that can be leached out during DW treatment and distribution. The leaching of these chemicals is influenced by various environmental and operating factors, with three major ones identified: MP concentration and polymer type, pH, and contact time. The leaching process is substantially enhanced during the disinfection step of DW treatment, due to ultraviolet light and/or disinfectant-triggered reactions. The study also reviewed human exposure to MPs and associated chemicals in DW, as well as their health impacts on the human nervous, digestive, reproductive, and hepatic systems, especially the neuroendocrine toxicity of endocrine-disrupting chemicals. An overview of MPs in DW, including tap water and bottled water, was also presented to enable a background understanding of MPs-associated chemicals. In short, certain chemicals leached from MPs in DW can have significant implications for human health and demand further research on their long-term health impacts, mitigation strategies, and interactions with other pollutants such as disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). This study is anticipated to facilitate the research and management of MPs in DW and beverages.

Micro(nano)plastics in the Human Body: Sources, Occurrences, Fates, and Health Risks

The increasing global attention on micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) is a result of their ubiquity in the water, air, soil, and biosphere, exposing humans to MNPs on a daily basis and threatening human health. However, crucial data on MNPs in the human body, including the sources, occurrences, behaviors, and health risks, are limited, which greatly impedes any systematic assessment of their impact on the human body. To further understand the effects of MNPs on the human body, we must identify existing knowledge gaps that need to be immediately addressed and provide potential solutions to these issues. Herein, we examined the current literature on the sources, occurrences, and behaviors of MNPs in the human body as well as their potential health risks. Furthermore, we identified key knowledge gaps that must be resolved to comprehensively assess the effects of MNPs on human health. Additionally, we addressed that the complexity of MNPs and the lack of efficient analytical methods are the main barriers impeding current investigations on MNPs in the human body, necessitating the development of a standard and unified analytical method. Finally, we highlighted the need for interdisciplinary studies from environmental, biological, medical, chemical, computer, and material scientists to fill these knowledge gaps and drive further research. Considering the inevitability and daily occurrence of human exposure to MNPs, more studies are urgently required to enhance our understanding of their potential negative effects on human health.

Migration testing of microplastics from selected water and food containers by Raman microscopy

The migration of microplastics (MPs) from plastic food packaging has received increasing attention. Despite numerous studies quantifying MPs released from food packaging, there is lack of systematic investigation on migration of MPs from food packages under US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s guidance for food contact substances. Herein, we aimed to determine the quantity and size distribution of MPs migrating from water and food plastic containers following US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s guidance using Raman microscopy. Six commonly used water and food containers made of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS) were treated using distilled water and food stimulants (10% and 50% ethanol) under various conditions. A range of 23,702 to 490,330 particles per liter MPs with 77%- 92% smaller than 5 µm were detected, in which the PP food container exhibited the highest release of MPs when incubated with 50% ethanol at 130 °C for 15 min (equivalent to heating fatty food in a microwave). The temperature and food types were key attributes for elevating MP migration in general. Further comparison observed direct microwave (534,109 particles per liter) heating led to a significantly higher release of MPs compared to the FDA-suggested method (155,572 particles per liter). Part of MPs (12-63%) failed to be identified by Raman microscopy due to small particle size. Our estimation suggests that individuals might inhale up to 4511 MPs per kg per day. This research offers vital insights into MP migration from food and water containers, aiding in the development of relevant guidelines and facilitating MPs' risk assessment and management.

Exploitation of Enterobacter hormaechei for biodegradation of multiple plastics

The escalating problem of environmental ecological pollution caused by plastics presents a significant challenge, which makes the management of plastic waste urgent nowadays. In this study, a bacterium named WX-2 was isolated and screened for its potential in polymer degradation. Through standard microbiological techniques and 16SrDNA gene sequencing, it was identified as Enterobacter hormaechei. To assess its biodegradability potential, various plastics including High density polyethylene, Polypropylene, Linear low density polyethylene, Poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) and Polyvinyl chloride were subjected to the study. The biodegradability of the plastics was evaluated using multiphase approaches involving techniques such as Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Mass loss, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Water contact angle, and Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results indicated that WX-2 possesses the capability to utilize diverse plastic polymers as sole carbon sources, displaying distinct biodegradation capacities. Notably, PBAT exhibited heightened susceptibility to degradation by the screened bacterial population.

Analysis of Flow Characteristics between Tandem Flexible Structures Based on PIV: Substantial Applications for the Removal of Microplastics

This study emphasizes the potential risk posed by microplastics, particularly in tap water. Numerous studies have reported the removal of microplastics, but the limitations in addressing this issue remain challenging. To tackle this problem, a new method is introduced using tandem flexible structures (FSs) for microplastic removal. The present study focused on understanding the hydrodynamic characteristics between FSs to utilize microplastic removal. This comprehension of fluid flow and FSs offers valuable insights for improving the efficiency of microplastic removal methods. Therefore, the optimal conditions for removing microplastics were experimentally investigated inside the FSs gap region. Based on the gap distance and height, the flow structures between FSs were investigated. A small secondary vortex structure that could trap particles from upstream was continuously maintained behind the upstream FSs under certain geometric conditions. It is shown that this vortex structure has an effective way of confining the particles from upstream. The persistency of a small secondary vortex was also evaluated. This study may be helpful to researchers working on microplastic removal and FSs with a tandem arrangement.

Microplastic contamination of packaged spirulina products

Microplastic (MP) contamination in commercially sold spirulina products has not been previously investigated. In this study, 29 spirulina samples in various packaging types were purchased from different brands and origins to assess the presence of MPs. Microplastic analysis was conducted using microscopic and μ-Raman techniques. To ascertain whether the content is indeed spirulina and make a comparison with the MP level, C-Phycocyanin levels were also analyzed. A total of 251 MP-like particles were observed. Out of the 29 examined packaged spirulina brands, 26 showed potential MPs upon visual inspection, with 35 particles confirmed as MPs (73% of the analyzed particles). The mean abundance of MPs was estimated at 13.77 ± 2.45 MPs/100 g dw. Powdered spirulina had a higher but not statistically significant MP abundance (17.34 ± 4.22 MPs/100 g dw) compared to capsule/tablet forms (10.43 ± 2.45 MPs/100 g dw). Fragments accounted for 38.3% while fibers constituted 61.7% of the identified MPs, with sizes ranging from 0.07 to 2.15 mm for fragments and 0.19 to 5.691 mm for fibers. The color distribution of MPs in spirulina samples was predominantly blue (52.8%), followed by black (25.4%), white (10.9%), and others (10.9%). Ten synthetic polymers and cellulose were identified through μ-Raman analysis, with polypropylene (31.6%) and polystyrene (8.3%) being the most prevalent. The correlation between C-Phycocyanin and MPs concentrations, was not found statistically significant. The abundance and composition of MPs were found to be influenced by packaging and processing stages. Identifying potential sources of MPs in spirulina products and evaluating their risks to human health is crucial.

Biochar-derived dissolved and particulate matter effects on the phytotoxicity of polyvinyl chloride nanoplastics

Nanoplastics in environments are potentially detrimental to plant growth. Appropriate doses of biochar can alleviate the phytotoxicity of nanoplastics under hydroponic conditions. However, the specific mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, the effects of biochar-derived dissolved matter (BCDM) and biochar-derived particulate matter (BCPM) on the phytotoxicity of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) nanoplastics were investigated and the underlying influencing mechanisms were elucidated. The results showed that PVC nanoplastics can be adsorbed and taken up by lettuce roots, inducing oxidative damage to lettuce shoots and roots and reducing their fresh weight. BCDM can promote the aggregation and sedimentation of PVC nanoplastics, and BCPM can adsorb PVC nanoplastics and cause barrier effect, which will reduce the exposure dose of PVC nanoplastics. Furthermore, nutrients in BCDM can promote lettuce growth. As a result, the presence of both BCDM and BCPM significantly mitigated the oxidative stress of lettuce shoots and roots as demonstrated by the decrease in hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde levels (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, lettuce biomass was significantly increased after addition of BCDM and BCPM compared to the single PVC treatment group (p < 0.05). This study provides a theoretical basis for finding solutions to alleviate the phytotoxicity of nanoplastics.

Research progress on occurrence characteristics and source analysis of microfibers in the marine environment

Synthetic microfiber pollution is a growing concern in the marine environment. However, critical issues associated with microfiber origins in marine environments have not been resolved. Herein, the potential sources of marine microfibers are systematically reviewed. The obtained results indicate that surface runoffs are primary contributors that transport land-based microfibers to oceans, and the breakdown of larger fiber plastic waste due to weathering processes is also a notable secondary source of marine microfibers. Additionally, there are three main approaches for marine microplastic source apportionment, namely, anthropogenic source classification, statistical analysis, and numerical simulations based on the Lagrangian particle tracking method. These methods establish the connections between characteristics, transport pathways and sources of microplastics, which provides new insights to further conduct microfiber source apportionment. This study helps to better understand sources analysis and transport pathways of microfibers into oceans and presents a scientific basis to further control microfiber pollution in marine environments.

The path of microplastics through the rare biodiversity estuary region of the northern Bay of Bengal

Due to its harmful effects on ecosystems and human health, microplastic (MP) pollution has become a significant environmental problem on a global scale. Although MPs' pollution path and toxic effects on marine habitats have been examined worldwide, the studies are limited to the rare biodiversity estuary region of Hatiya Island from the northern Bay of Bengal. This study aimed to investigate the MP pollution path and its influencing factors in estuarine sediments and water in rare biodiversity Hatiya Island in the northern Bay of Bengal. Sixty water and sediment samples were collected from 10 sampling sites on the Island and analyzed for MPs. The abundance of MPs in sediment ranged from 67 to 143 pieces/kg, while the abundance in water ranged from 24.34 to 59 pieces/m3. The average concentrations of MPs in sediment and water were 110.90 ± 20.62 pieces/kg and 38.77 ± 10.09 pieces/m3, respectively. Most identified MPs from sediment samples were transparent (51%), while about 54.1% of the identified MPs from water samples were colored. The fragment was the most common form of MP in both compartments, with a value of 64.6% in sediment samples and 60.6% in water samples. In sediment and water samples, almost 74% and 80% of MP were <0.5 mm, respectively. Polypropylene (PP) was the most abundant polymer type, accounting for 51% of all identified polymers. The contamination factor, pollution load index, polymer risk score, and pollution risk score values indicated that the study area was moderately polluted with MPs. The spatial distribution patterns and hotspots of MPs echoed profound human pathways. Based on the results, sustainable management strategies and intervention measures were proposed to reduce the pollution level in the ecologically diverse area. This study provides important insights into evaluating estuary ecosystem susceptibility and mitigation policies against persistent MP issues.

The iron matters: Aged microplastics disrupted the iron homeostasis in the liver organoids

Plastic products undergo artificial and unintentional aging during daily use, causing the presence of aged microplastics (aMP). Humans are inevitably exposed to aMP. Liver is one of the critical target organs of MP through oral intake, however, limited research has focused on the hepatic toxicity of aMP compared to pristine MP (pMP). We utilized the human pluripotent stem cells-derived liver organoids (LOs) to compare the cytotoxicity of pristine polystyrene microplastics (pPS) (1 μm, carbonyl index 0.08) and aged polystyrene microplastics (aPS) (1 μm, carbonyl index 0.20) ranged from 20 to 200 ng/mL. Our findings indicate that aPS was more cytotoxic than pPS. We explored the disrupted iron homeostasis in terms of the [Fe2+] and [Fe3+] levels, iron storage and transport. A "vector-like effect" induced by aPS has been preliminarily suggested by the correlated change in total iron level and co-localization of PS and ferritin light chain (FTL) in the LOs following exposure to aPS and ferric ammonium citrate (FAC) individually and combinedly. In addition, we observed abnormal mitochondrial morphology, elevated lipid peroxidation, and declined GSH peroxidase activity, together with the declined expression of transferrin receptor (TFRC) and elevated expressions of SLC7A11, FTL. The gene handled iron transport and iron use were disrupted by aPS. Moreover, we employed FAC to introduce iron overload and Nacetylcysteine (NAC) to protect the lipid peroxidation. In aPS + FAC group, aggravated effects could be observed in aspects of [Fe2+] level, lipid peroxidation, and compromised expression levels of iron homeostasis-related markers, in contrast, in aPS + NAC group, most of changes recovered but the hepatocytoxicity remained. Specifically, a dimorphic change in elevated FTL and decreased ferritin heavy chain (FTH1) caused by 50 ng/mL aMP (57.33 ± 3.57 items/mL, equivalent to human intake level), indicated a specific response to low-dose aMP.

A characterization and an exposure risk assessment of microplastics in settled house floor dust in Istanbul, Turkey

The presence of microplastics in the indoor environment presents growing environmental and human health risks because of their physicochemical and toxic characteristics. Therefore, we aimed to isolate, identify, and characterize plastic debris in settled house floor dusts. This study is a rare study which assess the risks of plastic debris in settled house dust through multiple approaches including the estimated daily intake, pollution loading index, and polymer hazard index. The results indicated that polyethylene and polypropylene were the predominate polymer type of plastic debris in settled house dust with various shapes and colors. The risk assessment results also indicated the serious impact of microplastics in terms of extremely dangerous contamination as well as the fact that they present a polymer hazard. Results indicated that humans have a higher risk of exposure to microplastics via ingestion rather than inhalation. In addition, infants had a higher risk of potential intake compared to other age groups.

Raman Microspectroscopy evidence of microplastics in human semen

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in human fluids and organs is a great concern, since, as highlighted by recent studies on animal models, they could cause alterations of several physiological functions, including reproduction. In this study, semen samples collected from men living in a polluted area of the Campania Region (Southern Italy), were analyzed to assess the presence of MPs. N. 16 pigmented microplastic fragments (ranging from 2 to 6 μm in size) with spheric or irregular shapes were found in six out of ten samples. All the detected MPs were characterized in terms of morphology (size, colour, and shape) and chemical composition by Raman Microspectroscopy. Chemical composition showed the presence of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), polyvinylchloride (PVC), polycarbonate (PC), polyoxymethylene (POM) and acrylic, suggesting ingestion and/or inhalation as a route of exposure to environmental MPs. In this work, we propose for the first time a mechanism by which MPs pass into the semen most likely through the epididymis and seminal vesicles, which are the most susceptible to inflammation.

Effects of Microplastic (MP) Exposure at Environmentally Relevant Doses on the Structure, Function, and Transcriptome of the Kidney in Mice

As a common emerging environmental pollutant, microplastics (MPs) have been detected in a variety of environmental media and human bodies. The potential toxic effects and mechanisms of MPs need to be revealed urgently. MPs can be deposited in the kidney, and exposure to high doses of MPs can cause nephrotoxicity in experimental animals. In this study, we investigated the effects of exposure to polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) at environmentally relevant doses (0.1 and 1 mg/L) on kidney structure, function, and transcriptome in mice. We found that mice exposed to PS-MPs in drinking water for eight weeks had no change in body weight or kidney coefficient. PS-MPs administration decreased the levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in mice, while serum creatinine (CRE) and uric acid (UA) concentrations were unaffected. Through using periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Masson staining, we discovered that the glomerular tuft area increased in the PS-MP-treated mice, while the degree of renal fibrosis remained unchanged. Furthermore, renal cortex transcriptomic analysis identified 388 and 303 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the 0.1 and 1 mg/L dose groups, respectively. The DEGs were highly enriched in mitochondrial-related terms and pathways of thermogenesis and oxidative phosphorylation. Moreover, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis revealed that cytochrome b-c1 complex subunit 10 (UQCR11) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 3 (MT-CO3) were important node proteins. These findings suggest that environmental exposure to MPs can cause abnormalities in renal structure and filtration function and that long-term exposure to MPs may be a risk factor for renal disease.

A new quantitative insight: Interaction of polyethylene microplastics with soil - microbiome - crop

In this study, the interaction between primary/secondary PE MPs and soil - microbiome - crop complex system and PE MPs enrichment behavior in crops were studied by using the self-developed quantitative characterization method of Eu-MPs and in situ zymography. The results demonstrated for the first time the enrichment effect of micron-sized PE (> 10 µm) in crops, manifested as roots>leaves>stems. Primary PE MPs significantly increased soil TN, TC, SOM and β-glu activity and inhibited Phos activity. Age-PE MPs significantly reduced soil TN, TP, β-glu and Phos activities and also have significant inhibitory effects on plant height, stem diameter, and leaf dry weight of maize. Age-PE MPs significantly affected soil microbial diversity, mainly caused by bacterial genera such as UTCFX1, Sphingomonas, Subgroup-6 and Gemmatimonas. Age-PE MPs also affected some metabolism related to microbial community composition and maize growth, including Glycerolipid, Citrate cycle (TCA cycle), C5-Branched dibasic acid, Arginine and proline, Tyrosine metabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, Valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis. These research results indicated that the PE MPs, which are widely present in farmland soils, can affect crop growth, soil microbial community and metabolic function after aging, thus affecting agroecosystems and terrestrial biodiversity.

Early screening of suspected microplastics in bottled water in the Santiago Metropolitan Region of Chile

Bottled water has emerged as a possible healthier alternative due to concerns about the quality of drinking water sources. However, recent studies have detected worrying concentrations of environmental contaminants in bottled water, including microplastics. Therefore, it is an emerging need to quantify their concentrations in local suppliers which could differ among countries and regions. In this work, we used fluorescence microscopy with Nile Red for the identification and quantification of potential microplastics in twelve brands of bottled water distributed in the Santiago Metropolitan Region of Chile. The average concentration of microplastics was 391 ± 125 p L-1, while the highest concentration observed was 633 ± 33 p L-1. Microplastics between 5 and 20 μm were the major contributors, a size fraction that has been reported to be susceptible to accumulate in the digestive tract or generate potential alterations in the lymphatic and circulatory systems. The estimated daily intake value for per capita was estimated to be 229 p kg-1 year-1 for people weighing 65 kg and 198 p kg-1 year-1 for those weighing 75 kg.

The Behavior of Polymeric Pipes in Drinking Water Distribution System-Comparison with Other Pipe Materials

The inner walls of the drinking water distribution system (DWDS) are expected to be clean to ensure a safe quality of drinking water. Complex physical, chemical, and biological processes take place when water comes into contact with the pipe surface. This paper describes the impact of leaching different compounds from the water supply pipes into drinking water and subsequent risks. Among these compounds, there are heavy metals. It is necessary to prevent these metals from getting into the DWDS. Those compounds are susceptible to impacting the quality of the water delivered to the population either by leaching dangerous chemicals into water or by enhancing the development of microorganism growth on the pipe surface. The corrosion process of different pipe materials, scale formation mechanisms, and the impact of bacteria formed in corrosion layers are discussed. Water treatment processes and the pipe materials also affect the water composition. Pipe materials act differently in the flowing and stagnation conditions. Moreover, they age differently (e.g., metal-based pipes are subjected to corrosion while polymer-based pipes have a decreased mechanical resistance) and are susceptible to enhanced bacterial film formation. Water distribution pipes are a dynamic environment, therefore, the models that are used must consider the changes that occur over time. Mathematical modeling of the leaching process is complex and includes the description of corrosion development over time, correlated with a model for the biofilm formation and the disinfectants-corrosion products and disinfectants-biofilm interactions. The models used for these processes range from simple longitudinal dispersion models to Monte Carlo simulations and 3D modeling. This review helps to clarify what are the possible sources of compounds responsible for drinking water quality degradation. Additionally, it gives guidance on the measures that are needed to maintain stable and safe drinking water quality.

Release characteristics and toxicity assessment of micro/nanoplastics from food-grade nonwoven bags

Micro/nanoplastic (M/NP) contamination in food has become a global concern. Food-grade polypropylene (PP) nonwoven bags, which are widely used to filter food residues, are considered environmentally friendly and nontoxic. However, the emergence of M/NPs has forced us to re-examine the use of nonwoven bags in cooking as plastic contact with hot water leads to M/NP release. To evaluate the release characteristics of M/NPs, three food-grade PP nonwoven bags of different sizes were boiled in 500 mL water for 1 h. Micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectrometer confirmed that the leachates were released from the nonwoven bags. After boiling once, a food-grade nonwoven bag can release 0.12-0.33 million MPs (>1 μm) and 17.6-30.6 billion NPs (<1 μm), equivalent to a mass of 2.25 - 6.47 mg. Number of M/NPs released is independent of nonwoven bag size; however, it decreases with increasing cooking times. M/NPs are primarily produced from easily breakable PP fibers, and they are not released into the water at once. Adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) were cultured in filtered distilled water without released M/NPs and in water containing 14.4 ± 0.8 mg L^-1 released M/NPs for 2 and 14 days, respectively. To evaluate the toxicity of the released M/NPs on the gills and liver of zebrafish, several oxidative stress biomarkers (i.e., reactive oxygen species, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and malonaldehyde) were measured. The ingestion of the released M/NPs by zebrafish induces oxidative stress in the gills and liver, depending on the exposure time. Food-grade plastics, such as nonwoven bags, should be used with caution in daily cooking because they release large amounts of M/NPs when heated, which can threaten human health.

Microplastics perturb nitrogen removal, microbial community and metabolism mechanism in biofilm system

Microplastics (MPs) are a significant component of global pollution and cause widespread concern, particularly in wastewater treatment plants. While understanding the impact of MPs on nutrient removal and potential metabolism in biofilm systems is limited. This work investigated the impact of polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) on the performance of biofilm systems. The results revealed that at concentrations of 100 and 1000 μg/L, both PS and PET had almost no effect on the removal of ammonia nitrogen, phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand, but reduced the removal of total nitrogen by 7.40-16.6%. PS and PET caused cell and membrane damage, as evidenced by increases in reactive oxygen species and lactate dehydrogenase to 136-355% and 144-207% of the control group. Besides, metagenomic analysis demonstrated both PS and PET changed the microbial structure and caused functional differences. Some important genes in nitrite oxidation (e.g. nxrA), denitrification (e.g. narB, nirABD, norB, and nosZ), and electron production process (e.g. mqo, sdh, and mdh) were restrained, meanwhile, species contribution to nitrogen-conversion genes was altered, therefore disturbing nitrogen-conversion metabolism. This work contributes to evaluating the potential risks of biofilm systems exposed to PS and PET, maintaining high nitrogen removal and system stability.

Recent advances towards micro(nano)plastics research in wetland ecosystems: A systematic review on sources, removal, and ecological impacts

In recent years, microplastics/nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) have received substantial attention worldwide owing to their wide applications, persistence, and potential risks. Wetland systems are considered to be an important "sink" for MPs/NPs, which can have potential ecological and environmental effects on the ecosystem. This paper provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the sources and characteristics of MPs/NPs in wetland ecosystems, together with a detailed analysis of MP/NP removal and associated mechanisms in wetland systems. In addition, the eco-toxicological effects of MPs/NPs in wetland ecosystems, including plant, animal, and microbial responses, were reviewed with a focus on changes in the microbial community relevant to pollutant removal. The effects of MPs/NPs exposure on conventional pollutant removal by wetland systems and their greenhouse gas emissions are also discussed. Finally, current knowledge gaps and future recommendations are presented, including the ecological impact of exposure to various MPs/NPs on wetland ecosystems and the ecological risks of MPs/NPs associated with the migration of different contaminants and antibiotic resistance genes. This work will facilitate a better understanding of the sources, characteristics, and environmental and ecological impacts of MPs/NPs in wetland ecosystems, and provide a new perspective to promote development in this field.

Microplastic pollution of drinking water in a metropolis

This study was conducted to identify microplastics (MPs) in drinking water from various sources in İstanbul that are known to pose potential health risks. One hundred drinking water samples were analysed. Samples were filtered with a glass filter (Ø: 1.0 μm). After filtration, microscopy was used, followed by SEM-EDS and ATR-FTIR identification to characterise MPs. Two shapes (fibers and fragments) and eight polymer types of MPs (ethylene propylene, neoprene, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polytetrafluoroethylene, vinyl chloride vinyl acetate copolymer) with sizes of 12-4892 µm (548 ± 777 µm) were detected. These MPs abundances ranged from 10 to 390 MP L^-1 (134 ± 93 MP L^-1). In the identification of MPs detected in filters by FTIR spectroscopy, bisphenol A, which is used in the production of various plastics and described as an important public health problem, was detected in 9.74% of MPs. Within the scope of the Sustainable Development Goals, UNEP has a specific objective of ensuring access to safe, affordable drinking water (SDG 6). With a clear statement, it should be emphasised that MPs are a significant barrier to the provision of safe drinking water, and a comprehensive plan for overcoming this barrier should be developed.

Pediatric Hepatic Angiosarcoma (PHAS) and Vinyl Chloride-A Ghost of the Past May Loom over East Palestine, OH, and beyond: A Critical Commentary

Road accidents are not infrequent everywhere in the world, but when they involve poisonous and dangerous chemical compounds, they represent a hazard and an issue for public health. In this commentary, we briefly review a recent East Palestine event and one of the chemicals primarily involved with a predisposition to initiate a carcinogenetic process. The author reviewed, as a consultant, numerous chemical compounds for the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a trusted agency of the World Health Organization. Something is looming over the territories of East Palestine, Ohio, United States, draining water from the soil. We speculate that there is a dark and opprobrious fate for this area of the United States due to the potential increase in cases of pediatric hepatic angiosarcoma, which will also be revised in this commentary.
