Abstract
We report the first biocatalytic modification of sesquiterpene lactones (STLs) found in the chicory plants, specifically lactucin (Lc), 11β,13-dihydrolactucin (DHLc), lactucopicrin (Lp), and 11β,13-dihydrolactucopicrin (DHLp). The selective O-acylation of their primary alcohol group was carried out by the lipase B from Candida antarctica (CAL-B) using various aliphatic vinyl esters as acyl donors. Perillyl alcohol, a simpler monoterpenoid, served as a model to set up the desired O-acetylation reaction by comparing the use of acetic acid and vinyl acetate as acyl donors. Similar conditions were then applied to DHLc, where five novel ester chains were selectively introduced onto the primary alcohol group, with conversions going from >99 % (acetate and propionate) to 69 % (octanoate). The synthesis of the corresponding O-acetyl esters of Lc, Lp, and DHLp was also successfully achieved with near-quantitative conversion. Molecular docking simulations were then performed to elucidate the preferred enzyme-substrate binding modes in the acylation reactions with STLs, as well as to understand their interactions with crucial amino acid residues at the active site. Our methodology enables the selective O-acylation of the primary alcohol group in four different STLs, offering possibilities for synthesizing novel derivatives with significant potential applications in pharmaceuticals or as biocontrol agents.

Abstract
The ovarian hyperstimulation treatment increases results of in vitro fertilization. However, the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome must be carefully evaluated for each patient. An excessive response increases complication and cancellation rates. Coasting could be applied when an excessive response occurred. This method requires stopping gonadotropin administration while GnRH agonist is continued. When the estradiol rate decreases, the hCG administration is allowed. In the literature, results shows adequate pregnancy rates, between 26 and 64%. It seems oocyte quality was not spoiled. However, coasting does not eliminate definitively the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Coasting method could be a safe and efficient method to treat an excessive ovarian response during in vitro fertilization protocol. Pregnancy rates seem to be preserved.

Abstract
Based on the analysis of the most frequent mutations responsible for cystic fibrosis (CF), a higher than expected frequency of CF mutations was recently reported in men with infertility due to reduced sperm quality. To further document whether this condition is associated with severe or mild abnormalities of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) functions, we carried out a complete scanning of CFTR sequences using a strategy that detects almost all 850 mutations and 150 polymorphisms reported to date in the CFTR gene. We have investigated a cohort of 56 patients with severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) and 50 controls from southern France for CFTR gene mutations and variations. The frequencies of CF-causing mutations and CFTR variations identified in this OAT sample did not differ significantly from the frequencies found in the normal population. However, we observed a 1.7-fold increase in the proportion of homozygotes for a specific CFTR haplotype (TG11-T7-G1540) in the OAT group (P = 0.025). Our results do not confirm a link between CF mutations and reduced sperm quality. Further studies are needed to substantiate the hypothesis that a combination of variants affecting expression and function of the CFTR protein is associated with male infertility.

Abstract
This study aims to report the willingness of different populations of high-risk couples to undergo preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for beta-thalassaemia as an alternative to prenatal genetic diagnosis (PND), and the willingness of infertile couples to undergo PGD for aneuploidies. An information sheet and questionnaire presenting PGD and PND procedures were distributed to four population types: 54 high-risk couples for beta-thalassaemia coming for their first PND (population A); 51 similar couples coming for their second or further PND without previous experience of therapeutic abortion (population B-na); 50 similar couples coming for their second or further PND with previous experience of therapeutic abortion for beta-thalassaemia-affected fetus (population B-ab); and 74 infertile couples undergoing routine in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) (population C). Favourable first impressions towards PGD compared with PND were observed in all four populations in the following proportions: 79.6% population A; 76.5% population B-na; 92.0% population B-ab; and 96.0% population C. Willingness to undergo PGD for beta-thalassaemia was as follows: 44.4% population A; 47.1% population B-na; and 72.0% population B-ab. We conclude that previous experience of PND for beta-thalassaemia is a crucial point in the willingness to accept the PGD procedure, and that couples belonging to population B-ab are the most suitable to undergo PGD for beta-thalassaemia. Some 96.0% of infertile couples in population C were ready to undergo PGD for aneuploidies.

Abstract
Obesity was defined by a body mass index more than 30 kg/m2. Many risks were related to this pathology, and sometimes, menstrual disorders or infertility. In order to obtain an adequate response to ovarian stimulation during IVF cycles, higher doses of menotropins are necessary in the group of obese patients. The mechanism of this phenomenon is still unclear. Leptin is one of the main hypothesis, and could act on obesity and reproductive system simultaneously. The likelihood to have an ongoing pregnancy after IVF treatment is less in the group of obese patients because of the increased risk of miscarriage and obstetrical complications. Weight loss prior IVF remains the main advice in order to decrease the risks of the procedure and to treat successfully these patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the implantation rate and pregnancy rate (PR) in patients with severe tubal factor infertility who were undergoing IVF. Patients who had undergone salpingectomy were compared with those who had not. DESIGN A prospective randomized study. SETTING A department of obstetrics and gynecology at a university hospital. PATIENT(S) Thirty patients who previously had undergone salpingectomy and 30 patients who had not undergone salpingectomy before IVF treatment. INTERVENTION(S) Laparoscopy with or without salpingectomy followed by IVF with the use of combined GnRH agonist and hMG therapy in a long stimulation protocol. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Embryo implantation rate and ongoing PR per transfer. The cumulative PRs were compared for the two groups of patients. RESULT(S) After the first IVF attempt, the implantation rate was 10.4% in the group with salpingectomy and 4.6% in the group without salpingectomy. For all IVF attempts, the respective embryo implantation rates in the two groups were 13.4% and 8.6%. The ongoing PR per transfer was 34.2% in the group with salpingectomy compared with 18.7% in the group without salpingectomy. After four IVF attempts, the probability of becoming pregnant was greater in the group of patients with salpingectomy (75%) than in the group without salpingectomy (63%). CONCLUSION(S) Previous salpingectomy in patients with severe tubal factor infertility who are undergoing IVF seems to increase the embryo implantation rate and the PR per cycle of IVF. This monocentric study must be followed by other similar studies to allow for a metaanalysis and confirm this clear trend with definitive evidence.

Abstract
A gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonist stimulation test determination of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations before and 2 h after buserelin injection was carried out in 78 in-vitro fertilization cycles, and compared with basal FSH concentrations to predict ovarian response. Ovarian response was quantified by the ratio of peak oestradiol concentration divided by the total dose of human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG) administered, the most reproducible parameter in 11 patients who underwent two treatment cycles. Stimulation outcome was highly related to the buserelin test, the best prognostic indicator being the sum of FSH concentrations. However, basal FSH concentration achieved similar correlations, even in those patients aged > 35 years. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of basal FSH concentration and sum of FSH concentrations were similar. Low basal concentration and sum of FSH concentrations were both associated with a better ovarian response. Construction of receiver operator characteristic curves demonstrated that basal FSH concentration was more informative than the sum of FSH concentrations. Finally, the sum of FSH concentrations did not increase the prediction of ovarian response variability. We conclude that the buserelin test is strongly predictive of stimulation outcome, but is no more informative than the usual screening. We suggest that the performance of other stimulation tests should be clearly compared with that of basal FSH concentration.

Abstract
In in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, morphologic embryo grading is the sole criteria for selection of embryos transferable in utero. Cytogenetic analysis of preimplantation embryos was performed to investigate the relationship between chromosomal status and morphologic quality of preimplantation eggs. Aneuploidy was the most frequently observed abnormality. In addition, various types of aberrations such as polyploidy, haploidy, mosaicism, and fragmentation were also found. Our results, pooled with data drawn from previous reports, demonstrated the prognostic value of the embryo grading system as a means for eliminating chromosomally abnormal embryos. In contrast, data suggested that some aspects of the IVF process might be responsible for the occurrence of these abnormalities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine plasminogen activators (PAs) and PA inhibitor levels in seminal plasma of patients attending an infertility clinic. DESIGN Quantification by immunologic method of PAs in seminal plasma. SETTING Patients of Department of Urology and Andrology, University Hospital, Nimes, France. PATIENTS Ninety-two men attending for assessment because of infertility. INTERVENTIONS Semen were collected by masturbation. Usual sperm parameters were determined; immediately after liquefaction, samples were snap-frozen at -85 degrees C until used for immunologic determination. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Tissue-type PA antigen, urokinase-type PA antigen, and type 1 PA inhibitor antigen levels in seminal plasma. RESULTS Median values of PA were 270 ng/mL (tissue-type PA) and 5.4 ng/mL (urokinase-type PA) in normozoospermia; 290 ng/mL (tissue-type PA) and 5.7 ng/mL (urokinase-type PA) in oligozoospermia; 325 ng/mL (tissue-type PA) and 3.5 ng/mL (urokinase-type PA) in oligoasthenozoospermia. Type 1 PA inhibitor antigen levels were often under detection limit. Tissue-type PA was 173.5 ng/mL in semen with abnormal liquefaction and 290 ng/mL in semen with normal liquefaction. CONCLUSION The study confirmed the presence of both types of PAs in seminal plasma, tissue-type PA being largely predominant. No difference was found in tissue-type PA, urokinase-type PA, or type 1 PA inhibitor antigen levels between normal and oligozoospermic semen nor between normal and asthenozoospermic semen. On the other hand, semen with abnormal liquefaction had significantly lower tissue-type PA level than normal semen.

Abstract
During in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, human preimplantation embryos were classified into four grades according to their morphological appearance under light microscopy. The grade IV group included poor quality embryos. In our IVF programme, these embryos were never transferred or frozen, and were thus available for cytogenetic analysis. Cytogenetic analysis was performed on 411 grade IV embryos from 327 couples participating in the IVF programme. A total of 118 embryos were successfully karyotyped using at least one metaphase. Normal diploid chromosomes were found in only 12 embryos, containing a total of 19 metaphases. All others (90%) showed abnormal or aberrant chromosome complements; 48 were aneuploid and six cases of single chromatids were noted; 14 embryos (11.8%) contained haploid complements, while the remaining 44 exhibited mosaics (2n/3n, n/2n, n/3n) or fragmented chromosome sets. Also, several structural aberrations and rearrangements were observed. These results indicate that the large majority of grade IV human embryos are chromosomally abnormal. This confirms the morphological assessment of the poor quality of these embryos and demonstrates the uselessness of both the transfer and the cryopreservation of grade IV embryos.

Abstract
A simple and reliable R banding technique was developed for karyotyping mature human oocytes. The banding quality obtained is sufficient for the diagnosis of specific aneuploidies and the discrimination between whole chromosomes and separated chromatids. The ability to karyotype human oocytes accurately will facilitate study of the aetiology of chromosomal abnormalities in human concepti.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The effect of selective fetocide on the course of 61 multiple pregnancies. DESIGN An observational study. SETTING A tertiary centre. SUBJECTS 61 women whose pregnancies included 37 triplets, 18 quadruplets, 5 quintuplets and 1 hepatuplet; 97% followed IVF or the induction of ovulation. The aim of the procedure in most cases was to obtain twins. INTERVENTIONS Selective reduction was performed before 13 weeks gestation under general anaesthesia, using either a transcervical (n = 26) or transabdominal approach (n = 35). Fifty-four twins, 4 singletons and 3 triplets were obtained after the procedure. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Preterm labour rate. RESULTS The rate of unplanned fetal loss was 13% and was related to the number of suppressed embryos (P < 0.05). The preterm labour rate was 56.6%, the mean gestation at delivery was 35.6 weeks. Seven deliveries were before 32 weeks and led to all neonatal deaths. A comparison with published data suggested that fetal reduction reduced the rate of preterm labour in high multiple pregnancies; in 24 twin pregnancies obtained after reduction of triplets there was probably a gain of 2 weeks gestation. Severe growth retardation occurred in 13%. The perinatal mortality rate was 10.8%. CONCLUSIONS Selective termination reduces but does not prevent early preterm labour. The procedure is of value in pregnancies with more than 3 fetuses and should be considered carefully for triplet pregnancies.

Abstract
We report the first case of an interstitial deletion of the distal long arm of chromosome 4 (q31.22----q34.2). The major clinical features are described and compared to those of other published reports of del 4q, mainly those sharing a common deleted segment with the present case (both interstitial and terminal). This comparison suggests that the characteristic phenotype attributed to terminal deletions of 4q31----qter probably mainly results from loss of the segment q31----q33-34.

Abstract
In this paper, we describe the outcome of 33 triplet pregnancies referred to us between 1985 and 1990. They were managed as follows: management at home as soon as the diagnosis was made, then hospitalization at 28 weeks' gestation. Progesterone and beta-mimetics were administered daily, a cesarean section was always performed. One late abortion occurred at 21 weeks. The rate of prematurity was 90.6%, mean gestational age at delivery was 34.1 +/- 3 weeks, and 62.5% of deliveries occurred between 34 and 37 weeks. Ninety-four fetuses were delivered alive. Mean birth weight was 1880 +/- 410 g. Fetal growth retardation rate was 61.8%, including 28 infants under the third centile and 31 under the 10th centile. Perinatal death rate was 4.16% including 2 in utero deaths and 2 neonate deaths. All infants are healthy except for one child with severe mental retardation. These results show that triplet pregnancies can be safely managed, and that selective first-trimester reduction in triplet pregnancies does not appear to be necessary.

Abstract
Eighteen women were referred for fetal karyotyping because of advanced maternal age (over 38 years) later than 23 weeks' gestation. In order to obtain more rapid karyotypes, cordocentesis rather than amniocentesis was performed. All procedures were successful, leading to the obtention of normal karyotypes in all cases. No fetal incidents occurred and results were obtained more rapidly than by amniocentesis. We suggest the use of cordocentesis rather than amniocentesis in cases of late referral of women.

Abstract
The degree of severity of congenital deformities of the hand, as well as any coexisting congenital anomaly should be evaluated especially if there is a possibility of therapeutic termination of pregnancy. This may be relatively easy in the case of some major malformations which affect the neurological or intellectual capacity of the child. It is however more difficult in the presence of predominantly motor anomalies, and with distally based anomalies of the upper limb which may be amenable to later reconstructive surgery.

Abstract
Since 1980, various treatments have been proposed for patients suffering from distal tubal infertility. Difficult choices between surgical (microsurgery/laparoscopy) treatments and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) still confront many workers. In this study, we evaluated the cumulative results of both therapeutic methods for this group of patients. From 1979 to 1990, 266 patients with distal tubal infertility were operated in our programme (group M: microsurgery, n = 211; group L: laparoscopy, n = 55). In group M, pathological findings were hydrosalpinges (n = 135) and incomplete distal tubal occlusion, (n = 76) and in group L hydrosalpinges (n = 31) and incomplete distal tubal occlusion (n = 24). After differing time intervals, IVF was proposed for these patients when no pregnancy occurred. The results were as follows: in group M, 35.5% intra-uterine pregnancy (IUP) and 6.6% ectopic pregnancy (EP) after fimbrioplasties versus 28.1% IUP and 11.9% EP after salpingostomy; in group L, 16.6% IUP and 4.2% EP after fimbrioplasty versus 12.9% IUP and 6.5% EP after salpingostomy. Following IVF, 55.7% of patients in group M and 14.5% in group L became pregnant. The cumulative results including both treatment techniques (surgery and IVF) show an average of 70% and 65% pregnancy rates in groups M and L respectively. The best results after surgery and throughout IVF were obtained during the first year. It is concluded that a short delay after surgery, averaging 6 months to 1 year, before involving patients in IVF, is very important.

Abstract
The use of LH-RH agonists is appropriate for the stimulation of ovulation. In contrast, in the case of induction of ovulation in a patient with deficient ovulation, suppression of influences of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis does not modify the pathological condition responsible for the ovulatory anomaly.

Abstract
The biological techniques utilized in IVF are divided into several stages: conditioning of the gametes, in vitro fertilization proper, culture of ova and embryos, freezing of gametes and embryos. Conditioning oocytes obtained by follicular fluid aspiration is extremely simple, but oocyte maturity can neither be diagnosed very accurately nor improved in vitro. Several methods can be used to condition spermatozoa, but these methods have limitations: normospermia, for instance, cannot be obtained with sperms of poor quality. In vitro fertilization proper is relatively easy to perform, at least with mature oocytes, but the diagnosis of fertilization, especially abnormal fertilization, is not always reliable. The quality of the embryos obtained raises a major problem: their equipment in chromosomes is unassessable, and their viability can only be roughly evaluated.

Abstract
Thirty-four women with multiple pregnancies (three or more fetuses) underwent embryonic reduction in order to reduce abortions, premature births or fetal growth-retardation by obtention of twins. Four early abortions occurred. Thirty pregnancies reached term and out of 60 fetuses, 58 infants were born alive. Fetal death in utero of one twin occurred in two pregnancies. The mean term until delivery was 36 +/- 2.8 weeks gestation and the prematurity rate was 51.7%. Of 55 neonates, 25 were underweight within the 10th percentile and 10 out of 55 neonates were underweight below the 3rd percentile. There were three deaths in the early neonatal period. The rate of perinatal mortality was 8.3%. Fifty-four children are currently healthy and one child has a mild axial hypotonia. A reduction in prematurity was observed with a gain of 2 weeks on reported data concerning triplet pregnancies. The rate of low-birth-weight infants was high, 63.5% being underweight at birth.

Abstract
From January 1986 to July 1987, 143 patients with unexplained infertility (UI) following 217 IVF attempts were studied and randomly assigned for statistical analysis to be compared with 434 tubal infertility (TI) patients undergoing 748 IVF attempts. The age of patients, previous pregnancy history and stimulation protocols were identical in both groups. In comparison with tubal patients, IVF attempts on the UI group were characterized by the same rates of cycle failure, mean number of oocytes retrieved per cycle, a lower fertilization rate (45.7% UI/59.8% TI) (P less than 0.01) and no difference in cleavage and nidation rates. However, a decrease in the pregnancy rate/attempt (13.8% UI/19.5% TI) tended towards a significant value (P = 0.06). Although the semen parameters were found to be in the normal range during the previous fertility screening in both groups, the incidence of at least one abnormality (count less than 20 X 10(6)/ml, and/or total motility less than 30% and/or abnormal forms greater than 75%) on the day of insemination was found to be significantly higher in UI (20%) than in TI (11%) patients. Moreover, 25% of UI patients did not fertilize any oocytes inseminated, whatever the number of oocytes retrieved. This rate of failed fertilization was significantly lower (9%) in tubal patients. The oestrogen response profiles were similar in both groups, analyzed according to the stimulation protocols.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
A total of 1078 cycles were stimulated for in-vitro fertilization between 1 January 1986 and 31 July 1987. One-hundred-and-ninety-six cycles had to be cancelled because of an abnormal ovarian response (18.2%). The majority of these cancellations were due to the phenomenon of follicular atresia (45%) or the absence of follicular growth (30%). Bad responder patients who had undergone cancellation during at least two successive cycles, when compared with normal responder patients, were somewhat older and had more frequent periovarian adhesions and ovulatory defects. The use of a GnRH agonist allowed correction of a certain number of ovarian response inadequacies, but follicular atresia and absence of folliculogenesis remained frequent phenomena.

Abstract
In the first of two studies, 20 patients were selected on the basis of tubal infertility and were randomly assigned to two groups receiving different ovarian stimulation protocols. In group A, 10 patients were given follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), FSH was continued until the criteria for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration were satisfied. In group B, 10 patients received Buserelin (0.3 ml twice a day subcutaneously) for 14 days to induce pituitary desensitization. Stimulation with FSH was then started, and Buserelin treatment was continued until hCG administration. In the second study, patients were included if they had had at least two previous attempts at ovarian stimulation that failed to reach the stage of follicular aspiration. Ovarian stimulation was conducted with a combination of Buserelin and human menopausal gonadotropin. Use of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist in in vitro fertilization increased the number of oocytes collected, the fertilization rate, the length of the luteal phase and the pregnancy rate. The GnRH agonist also contributed to a generally better ovarian response in patients whose estradiol production had previously responded poorly to conventional ovarian stimulation protocols.

Abstract
This study concerns two children, from the same otherwise normal family, presenting progressive spontaneous amputations of the limbs, suggesting peripheral hereditary sensory neuropathy. Samples from the distal nerves and vessels and the distal tibial epiphyses were examined ultrastructurally. The nerves showed signs of degeneration, and a typical bone necrosis, without osteoclasts, was observed in the 2 cm margin of the samples. Simultaneous modifications of the vessels suggest a neurally initiated vascular reflex resulting in bone destruction. Theories that might explain the observations are discussed.

Abstract
Fifty-nine chronic peritoneal catheters made of polyethylene covered with silastic were used to treat 43 IDDM patients peritoneally for 3-34 mo (mean 14 mo) with portable peristaltic pumps and U40 acidic insulin. The operative life of the catheters was determined by actuarial analysis. The mechanisms of catheter failure were determined by preremoval x-ray opacification, removal under laparoscopic examination, and electron microscopic analysis of the catheter. Factors such as age, sex, duration of diabetes, implantation and tunnelization procedures, length of the catheter, and rate of infusion were analyzed. The 50% survival rate of the catheters was 16 mo. Six catheters were irreversibly obstructed by intraluminal fibrin formation and/or extraluminal adhesions, although insulin precipitation was never encountered. Seven catheters had to be removed because of a persisting local infection. Other causes were negligible (misinsertion, irreparable break). The only factor significantly related to incidence of catheter failure was gender with respect to obstruction (1 obstruction among 24 women versus 5 among 19 men, P less than 0.03).

Abstract
We have examined by electron microscopy the non fertilized oocytes and the non divided eggs after assay of in vitro fertilization. We have observed three blocking points; 1) absence of fusion of the gametes, either because of oocyte immaturity or over-maturity, either because of spermatozoa phagocytosis by follicle cells transformed in phagocytic cells, in presence of intra or extra-cellular bacteria; 2) fusion of the gametes but absence of spermatic nucleus decondensation; 3) fusion of the gametes and pronuclei formation but absence of amphimixy. Two causes are evident: failure of oocyte maturation in vivo or in vitro, and bacterial contamination problems after female or male infra-clinical infections.

Abstract
It is admitted that selection of human motile spermatozoa improves chances of conception by homologous artificial insemination. Effect of media constituted by different concentrations of glucose, lactate and phosphate in the maintenance of vitality and forward motility (positively correlated with penetrating capacity) was studied in human spermatozoa after washing. Lactate optimal concentrations appear necessary in the maintenance of progressive motility. The vitality is little affected in the various media. To complete this minimum medium various substances known to improve spermatozoa survival should be added. This complete media should allow to dispose of suitable spermatozoa suspensions during several days permitting many inseminations by cycle.

Mallory bodies (MB) are characteristic features of human and experimental hepatitis they exhibit, by electron microscope, an heterogeneous structure. We propose a mode of formation of such MB, which would take place un a progressive way from simple form (bundles of microfilaments) to complex form (typical MB).

Abstract
The effect of estradiol on chromatin ultrastructure in interphase nuclei was studied in immature rat and lamb endometrium. Physiological doses of estradiol within the first hour transformed the condensed chromatin into dispersed chromatin both in vivo and in vitro. These ultrastructural modifications were specifically induced by hormones translocating the estrogen receptor to the nucleus of estrogen-responsive tissues. Conversely, the antiestrogen tamoxifen gave a hypercondensation of chromatin. The addition of actinomycin D, cordycepin or alpha-amanitin, but not of cycloheximide, prevented the effect of estradiol both on the ultrastructural change and on [3H]uridine incorporation, suggesting that chromatin decondensation was closely related to transcriptional activity. These results indicate that in endometrium, estrogen rapidly provokes a large and extended modification of chromatin ultrastructure, which suggest a general effect on chromatin function rather than a selective activation of a limited number of genes.

Abstract
We have measured on semi-thin sections, the mitotic index in 5 benign gliomas and 5 malignant gliomas among a whole of about 80,000 cells in each group, divided into fields of 750 cells on an average. We have differentiated between normal mitoses and abnormal mitoses on one hand, between viable and adequate mitoses and non-viable mitoses on the other. If we take into account the total number of mitoses, the mitotic index is not greatly different between the 2 groups of tumors (about 5 per thousand), although slightly superior in the benign gliomas. If we take into account the viable or adequate mitoses only, the mitotic index is greatly superior among the benign gliomas. These results are discussed according to other data related with the kinetics of proliferation of gliomas and according to the possibility of cellular fusions as a process of a minor spreading of malignant gliomas.

Abstract
We have compared the cell coat of benign gliomas and of malignant gliomas, by Ruthenium Red staining in vitro and by Thiéry's cytochemical reaction in situ. The thickness of the cell coat is not significantly increased by malignancy on the free surfaces of glioma cells. But in malignant gliomas only the cell coat disappears on the intercellular contact zones. These modifications are related to cell fusion characteristics of malignant transformation.

In each case it was possible to distinguish certain cells with epithelial features (desmosomes, microfliaments, interdigitating extensions) and others with fibroblastic features (collagen fibers). Others cells of transitional form were also seen. The proportion of these cellular types is variable, making it possible to classify meningiomas into seven types of progressing gradually from a purely epithelial type to a purely fibroblastic one.-We found no important ultrastructural abnormalities in the cells. These case reports confirm the uniqueness of meningiomas, which are composed of variously shaped cells but have their origin from a single cellular type. This has double potentiality for fibroblastic and epithelial differentiation.

Abstract
A few cell lines and primary monolayer cultures were accidentally infected by bacteria. These cultures were successfully decontaminated by means of the specific bacteriophage virus after quick identification of the responsible bacteria. This method presents a practical interest for preservation of valuable cultures.

Abstract
After in vivo and in vitro administration of aestradiol, the chromatin of lamb endometrium and of hormone-dependent 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene Rat mammary tumors is rapidly transformed from a condensed into a diffuse chromatin. A stimulation of 3H leucine incorporation into protein was also observed. These modifications were specific for estrogen receptor ligands and for estrogen responsive tissues. In vitro tamoxifen induced pycnosis. These changes could be used to improve the prediction of hormone dependency of human breast and uterine cancers.

Abstract
The observation in malignant glioma of multinucleated cells possessing nuclei at different stages of the cell cycle, micrographs never encountered in benign glioma, led us to propose the hypothesis that, at least in this series of tumors, cell fusion was a criterion of malignancy. We tried to confirm this hypothesis by grafting malignant human gliomas into the brains of new-born mice for the purpose of making hybrid cells possessing human and murine characteristics conspicuous, we found these same multinucleated cells in these grafts. We demonstrated the hybrid nature of these cells by means of a fluorochrome, 33,258 Hoechst, which has the property of fixing itself selectively in the chromocentres of mice. We found quenched human cells, very fluorescent mice cells, and hybrid cells with syncaryons presenting a mixture of fluorescent and quenched chromocentres. These malignant cells are therefore capable of fusing with normal cells at a frequency which remains to be determined.
