Abstract
Neospora caninum is an obligate intracellular parasite that causes abortion in ruminants. Different strains produce differences in the severity of disease outcomes. These differences may cause physiological or pathological changes in cells, modifying the intercellular interactions and intracellular transport pathways that could be evidenced by identifying the terminal sugars. This study aimed to characterize the oligosaccharide pattern in the bovine placenta and uterus after infection with tachyzoites of three different strains of N. caninum (Nc-1, Nc-6 Argentina and Nc Spain-7) during early gestation. Fourteen heifers were inoculated intravenously on day 70 of gestation with 2 × 108 N. caninum tachyzoites and samples of placentae and uteri were analysed by histology and lectin histochemistry. In the infected groups, severe placentitis was associated with changes in lectin binding in the vascular endothelium by Lens culinaris agglutinin (LCA), Pisum sativum agglutinin (PSA) and Ricinus communis I (RCA-I) lectins, in the epithelial cells of the endometrial glands by RCA-I, Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA), succinylated wheat germ agglutinin, peanut agglutinin (PNA), concanavalin-A (CON-A), LCA, PSA and Phaseolus vulgaris erythroagglutinin (PHA-e), and in the trophoblast layer by PNA, CON-A, LCA, PSA, PHA-e, soybean agglutinin, RCA-I, DBA and Bandieraea simplicifolia agglutinin (BSA-I). The results suggest that N. caninum causes changes in the glycosylation pattern in the maternofetal interface tissues and might cause abortions in early gestation due to changes in the cellular structure of the placenta.

Abstract
Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) is the most common malignant skin tumour in cats and the nature of the molecular mechanisms involved is poorly defined. Included among the molecular mechanisms in human and canine CSCCs is altered expression of E-cadherin/β-catenin. This study aimed to explore the immunohistochemical expression pattern of E-cadherin and β-catenin in 43 samples of feline CSCC by using a tissue microarray to elucidate whether expression of these molecules is dysregulated. Membrane expression of E-cadherin and membrane and cytoplasmic expression of β-catenin were significantly reduced in the CSCCs. Cytoplasmic expression of E-cadherin and nuclear expression of β-catenin were also found in some CSCCs. These findings indicate that altered expression of E-cadherin and β-catenin is a frequent event in feline CSCCs, suggesting that these molecules play an important role in acquisition of the malignant phenotype in feline patients with CSCC. The results also suggest the existence of a subpopulation of feline patients with CSCC in which the Wnt pathway may contribute to epidermal carcinogenesis.

Abstract
There are few studies that classify and characterize the morphometric and immunohistochemical features of goitre in bovine thyroid glands (TGs). We investigated 39 bovine TGs (fetuses [9], stillbirths [18], neonates [12]) born to dams with low T4 hormone levels and no iodine supplementation and 10 (fetuses [3], stillbirths [3], neonates [4]) born to dams with normal T4 levels and supplemented with iodine. Body weight (BW), TG weight (TGW), TGW:BW ratio and histological lesions were determined. The TGs were classified histopathologically as normal gland (G0), mild goitre (G1), moderate goitre (G2) or severe goitre (G3). Various morphological and morphometric parameters were calculated from microscopic images using image analysis software. Immunohistochemistry was performed to detect proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). There were significant differences in the TGW:BW ratio among groups (P <0.05): 0.3 ± 0.1 in G0, 0.5 ± 0.3 in G1, 0.8 ± 0.3 in G2 and 1.3 ± 0.7 in G3. In G0, large homogeneous follicles with eosinophilic colloid were seen. In the groups with lesions (G1, G2 and G3), heterogeneity in follicle shape and size, height and area of thyroid follicular cells, height of thyroid follicular epithelium and PCNA immunolabelling were directly related to histopathological grade, with significant differences among groups (P <0.001), gradually increasing from G1 to G3 compared with G0. The TGW:BW ratio and histological grade were positively correlated (P = 0.008).

Abstract
In viviparous teleosts, intraovarian gestation occurs intrafollicularly, as in poeciliids, or intraluminally, as in goodeids and anablepids. Furthermore, there are two different forms of embryonic nutrition: lecithotrophy and matrotrophy; depending on the species, these can be exclusive or coexist during gestation. In matrotrophic species, nutrients are transmitted from the mother to the embryo and are especially important in species with intraluminal gestation. Jenynsia lineata is a South American viviparous teleost with intraluminal gestation, characterized by eggs with scarce yolk, which is resorbed when embryos are 6 mm long, thus developing a branchial placenta. Using histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical techniques, the present study describes the characteristics and changes of the ovarian mucosa in J. lineata during gestational and nongestational phases, and analyzes the embryonic pharyngeal epithelium in the branchial placenta. The ovaries of 30 adult female specimens were processed using histological techniques and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Masson's trichrome, and Alcian Blue pH 2.5/periodic acid Schiff reagent. To detect cell proliferation, we used antiproliferating cell nuclear antigen antibody. In nonpregnant females, eosinophilic granular cells (EGCs) and lymphocytes were identified in the lamina propria of the tunica mucosa, and melanomacrophage centers (MMCs) and fibroblasts were identified adjacent to tissue debris in the ovarian folds'. In the cellular debris, an embryo in resorption was observed. In pregnant females, the ovarian mucosa has thin vascularization branches entering the opercular chamber of the embryos, in close contact with the forming gill processes, thereby establishing a branchial placenta. Active cell replacement was observed in these ovarian branches. The identification of fibroblasts, lymphocytes, EGCs, and MMCs adjacent to tissue debris could indicate that these cell types are involved in the embryonic resorption process. Considering the new data obtained in this study on the branchial placenta of J. lineata, we conclude that cell proliferation could be involved in the development of maternal-embryonic interaction.

Abstract
The toxic effect of ferns of the genus of Pteris in bovines is caused by ptaquiloside, the main carcinogenic toxin. In this study, ten species of Pteris fern in different phenologic stages and plant conditions were collected in northwest Argentina. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of Pt in the recent collected samples (adults and young plants) but not in the herbarium specimens. The results show a great variation of Pt concentration that depends on the phenologic stage, plant condition, and collection site. Pt was measured in 6-4326 μg/g concentration, with a mean concentration of 644 μg/g. No Pt was detected in eight species of Pteris collected from herbarium samples; such results may be a false negative. It is important to notice that analysis of herbarium samples for Pt may not be a reliable method to determine its presence. It is important to further understand the potential toxicity caused by these ferns because of their effect on animals, public health, and the environment.

Abstract
In porcine placenta, abnormal development of the placental vasculature leads to placental insufficiency. The aim of this study was to determine the mRNA expression of angiogenic growth factors and to determine the vascular characteristics in placenta at day 40 of pig gestation. Samples were collected from maternal-chorioallantoic interface (n = 21) for the measurement of mRNA expression of VEGFA, ANGPT1, ANGPT2, FGF2 and its receptors KDR, TEK, FGFR1IIIc, FGFR2IIIb respectively, and for immunohistochemistry analysis of CD31 and VEGFA. Immunohistochemical analysis of CD31 and VEGFA, morphometric measurement of blood vessels, high resolution light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were performed. Capillary area density, number of blood vessels and capillary area were significantly higher on the maternal side than on the fetal side (P<0.05). The ultrastructural finding of blood vessels demonstrates close contact with the trophoblastic epithelium. The relative mRNA expression of VEGFA and its receptor KDR were higher compared with the other angiogenic genes. In conclusion, a high mRNA expression of VEGFA and its receptor KDR added to the immunohistochemical results suggest a potential role of these genes in this pathway associated with an increase in the density of the capillary area on the maternal side and a reduction in the hemotrophic diffusion distance at the interface for nutrient exchange.

Abstract
The main evolutionary milestone in the oviparity-viviparity transition is placentation. The placenta is an organ with great morphological diversity among eutherians. The expression of different glycosidic residues (Gr) in the near-term placenta constitutes its glycotype. In this study, the expression of different Gr was determined by lectin histochemistry in early, midterm, and near-term placentas of the plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus), a caviomorph rodent with the highest poliovulatory rate and embryonic resorption rate among eutherians. Besides, a matrix with the expression of each Gr in the exchange trophoblast of viscacha and other eutherians was constructed to map and infer phylogenetic and evolutionary relationships. Between early, midterm, and near-term placentas, variations in the pattern expression of Gr were observed. The glycotype of the near-term placenta is composed of a high diversity of Gr. Reconstruction of the ancestral state for each Gr present in the near-term placenta showed a diverse scenario: some sugars were common to the species of Placentalia included in this study. In the analyzed species with synepitheliochorial and epitheliochorial placentas, no differential glycosylation patterns between them were observed. In species with invasive placentas, such as the endotheliochorial placentas of Carnivora, some common Gr were detected among them, while others were species-specific. In species with hemochorial placenta, the same Gr are shared. Particularly, in the viscacha greater differences with species of the Hominidae and even Muridae families were observed. Nevertheless, greater similarities with other caviomorph rodents were detected. Placental glycotype of each species constitutes an excellent tool to achieve phylogenetic and evolutionary inferences among eutherians.

Abstract
Bovine tritrichomonosis, a sexually transmitted disease caused by the protozoan Tritrichomonas foetus, is characterized by producing reproductive alterations in cattle. Carbohydrates on the surface of the uterine epithelium are involved in the process of adhesion and colonization of the protozoan. The murine model has proved to be an inexpensive, practical and representative alternative to study the lesions produced in the natural host. For this work, during the first stage, 6-8 week old female BALB/c mice were inoculated with 24 different T. foetus isolates in order to classify them according to their pathogenicity. Then, seven isolates were selected and processed with lectin histochemistry to determine if the differences in pathogenicity corresponded to the changes found in the uterine carbohydrate expression pattern. In this work, we demonstrate the differences in the expression of the carbohydrate pattern between infected and uninfected mice. In addition, within the group of infected mice, differences were found in the degree of pathogenicity of the isolates, thus evidencing their biological variability.

Abstract
The Neotropical armoured catfish Corydoras paleatus is a facultative air-breathing teleost commonly exported as ornamental fish. In this species, air breathing enables it to survive and inhabit freshwater environments with low oxygen levels. Therefore, it is important to analyse the gills from a morphological aspect and its dimensions in relation to body mass with reference to aquatic respiration. For that, the gills were analysed using a stereoscopic microscope for morphometric studies, and structural and ultrastructural studies were carried out to compare the four branchial arches. Furthermore, two immunohistochemical techniques were used to locate and identify the presence of a Na+ /K+ pump. The characterization of the potential for cell proliferation of this organ was assessed using an anti-PCNA antibody. The results show that gills of C. paleatus present some characteristics related to its diet and lifestyle, such as the limited development of gill rakers and the abundance of taste buds. In addition, other special features associated with the environment and bimodal breathing were observed: scarce and absent mucous cells (MCs) in the gill filaments and branchial lamellae, respectively, and the localization of mitochondria-rich cells (MRCs) covering the basal third of the branchial lamellae, which reduces the gill respiratory area. A peculiar finding in the gill epithelium of this armoured catfish was the presence of mononuclear cells with sarcomeres similar to myoid cells, whose functional importance should be determined in future studies. Finally, in C. paleatus, the interlamellar space of gill filaments is an important site for cell turnover and ionoregulation; the latter function is also performed by the branchial lamellae.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) represents the most common malignant tumour of the feline skin. Emerging evidence suggests that the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR) signalling pathway may represent a potential target for pharmacological intervention in human and canine CSCC. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES The present study aimed to explore the expression pattern and status of activation of relevant signalling proteins of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway in feline CSCC. METHODS AND MATERIALS The expression of pEGFRTyr1068 , pAktSer473 , pS6Ser235/236 combined with Ki-67, and the tumour suppressor protein PTEN was evaluated by immunohistochemical analysis in 45 samples of feline CSCC, using a tissue microarray. RESULTS The immunodetection using phosphospecific antibodies to detect the activated forms of signalling proteins showed that the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway is frequently activated in feline CSCCs, and may be independent of the activation of EGFR. The results also showed that PTEN expression is not significantly altered in feline CSCCs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Our study shows that the persistent activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway represents a key event in feline CSCC, pointing to this signalling pathway being a potential therapeutic target in feline patients with CSCC.

Abstract
The liver has multiple functions that change throughout ontogeny. South American camelids (SAC) have unique characteristics related to adaptation to extreme environments and metabolism. However, the process of hepatic cell differentiation has not been studied in any SAC. We study the patterns of cell differentiation and proliferation in the liver of the alpaca at different times of the ontogeny, excluding the hematopoietic components. Immunohistochemical techniques were performed in 66 specimens, including embryos, fetuses, neonates and adults. Supplementary analyses were performed by lectinhistochemistry. The hepatocytic differentiation was performed by the identification of Hepatocyte (Clone: OCH1ES Dako®). It began in the specimens of 1.8-2.5 cm of crown to rump length (CRL), from Days 25-29 (ovulation = Day 0), continued during gestation and intensified towards its end. The cholangiocytic differentiation was performed by the identification of cytokeratin 7 (CK7, Dako®). It was manifested at the final of gestation (specimens of 28.4 cm CRL, from Day 223 onwards). Parenchymal cells underwent a process of gradual differentiation (differentiation of hepatocytes preceded that of cholangiocytes). Cell proliferation was observed along gestation using the nuclear proliferation antigen (PCNA) and Ki-67. Hepatic organogenesis in the alpacas shares similar differentiation and proliferation mechanisms with other altricial, but phylogenetically distant, species.

Abstract
Five adult Saanen goats received a single oral dose of Heterophyllaea pustulata containing 42.25 μg/kg rubiadin (anthraquinone) and 3 adult goats were untreated controls. All goats were exposed to sunlight and sequential ear skin biopsies were collected before treatment and at 32 hours, 3 days, 8 days, and 15 days after treatment. Changes at 32 hours after dosing included epidermal spongiosis, single cell death and acantholysis, an increased BAX/BCL-2 protein ratio, and dermal edema. Lesions at day 3 included epidermal and adnexal necrosis, crust formation, and acanthosis. Acanthosis, hyperkeratosis, and dermal fibrosis and neovascularization were present at day 15. The pro-apoptotic (BAX)/anti-apoptotic (BCL-2) protein ratio increased at 32 hours, whereas epidermal and dermal PCNA immunolabeling increased between days 8 and 15 after treatment. The cutaneous lesions were consistent with sunlight-induced damage, and the occurrence in treated but not control goats indicates photosensitization.

Abstract
Embryonic death followed by resorption is a conserved process in mammals. Among the polyovular species, Lagostomus maximus (plains viscacha) constitutes a model of early and physiological embryonic death, since out of a total of 10-12 implants, 8-10 are resorbed during early/intermediate gestation, surviving are only the most caudal implantations of each uterine horn. This regular reproductive event is unique to this species, but many characteristics of the implantations during the early gestation of L. maximus, when embryonic death processes begin are unknown. The aim of the present work was to analyze the implantation sites of this species using morphological, morphometric, histochemical, lectinhistochemical, and immunohistochemical techniques to infer the possible causes of this event. Macroscopically, the length and width of the implantation sites significantly increased in a craniocaudal direction. Histochemically, the implantation sites did not differ in the expression of glycoconjugates and glycosidic residues. Furthermore, no variations were observed in cell renewal, hormone receptor expression, and decidualization. Both the glandular and vascular areas of the implantation sites significantly increased in the craniocaudal axis. Some necrotic cells and an inflammatory response with a predominance of lymphocytes and fibrin were observed in the cranial and middle but not in the caudal implantation sites. We conclude that signs of embryonic death and resorption are already observed in the early gestation of L. maximus. Our results reaffirm the hypothesis that postulates the key potential role of uterine glands and blood vessels in the gestation of the species, with emphasis on embryonic death. This pattern of embryonic death in L. maximus makes this species an unconventional mammalian model, which adds to the peculiarities of polyovulation (200-800 oocytes/estrus) and hemochorial placentation.

Abstract
During embryogenesis, teleost females do not develop Müllerian ducts, which form the oviducts in all other vertebrates. Thus, when they reach sexual maturity they do not have oviducts. In viviparous teleosts, the lack of oviducts means that the development of the embryos occurs as an intraovarian gestation, unique among vertebrates. The ovary is an unpaired hollow organ whose cavity is continuous with the caudal portion, the gonoduct, characterized by the absence of germinal cells, which opens to the exterior at the gonopore. The gonoduct attains essential function as a barrier between the germinal region of the ovary and the exterior during all reproductive stages. This study describes the functional morphology of the gonoduct in the viviparous teleost Cnesterodon decemmaculatus during non-gestation (previtellogenesis and vitellogenesis) and gestation. The ovaries were processed using histological techniques and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, and periodic acid Schiff. The gonoduct has two regions: cephalic and caudal, and is formed by three histological layers, which are, from inside to the periphery: (a) tunica mucosa; (b) tunica muscularis; and (c) tunica serosa. In the cephalic region there are mucosal folds extending into the lumen and forming a structure similar to a cervix. The histology of the gonoduct indicates essential functions, that is, (a) the control of the luminal diameter in the limit to the germinal region of the ovary by the presence of a cervix; (b) during insemination the gonoduct receives the spermatozoa, may store and transport them to the germinal region; (c) the presence of melano-macrophage centers indicates support of immunological processes, especially during gestation when these centers increase in size; (d) production of exocrine secretions; and (e) it is the birth canal, internally lined by an ciliated epithelium and surrounded by smooth musclesboth tissues supposedly supporting the birth process.

Abstract
The tarsometatarsus conformation and foot types in birds are unique traits within vertebrates. We investigate how the tarsometatarsus and the zygodactyl foot are formed during development in the monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus). Using bones, whole mount specimens stained for cartilage and bone, and histological sections, we focus on the osteology and morphogenesis of the tarsometatarsus. We also compare the tarsometatarsus development between the altricial monk parakeet with the precocial chicken. The results and conclusions we reached are: (1) the hypotarsus, a character of phylogenetic significance, is monocanaliculate in the adult; (2) digit I retroversion is consequence of the displacement of the articulation site of the metatarsal 1 and its torsion; (3) digit IV retroversion is linked to the development of the trochlea accesoria; (4) in ovo, the ossification and fusion of the metatarsals 2-4 begin in their mid-diaphysis and extends cylindrically to both proximal and distal directions; and (5) the differences in the development of the tarsometatarsus between the monk parakeet and the chicken evidence heterochronies, probably related with their different types of development.

Abstract
Some years ago, our group reported the presence of the female prostate in all the studied females of the plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus). The goal of the present study was to characterize and compare the female prostate gland between adult pregnant and non-pregnant plains viscacha using histochemical, lectin-histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques, as well as optic and electron microscopy. Structurally, alveoli are lined by a simple epithelium formed by different cell types: basal cells, secretory cells in different stages of the secretory cycle and cells of clear cytoplasm. Secretory cells are the most abundant cell type, differing between them depending on the quantity and electron-density of their granules. The basal cells are less abundant and are responsible for the renewal of the alveolar epithelium. Likewise, other cells with secretory morphology were found in all the studied females; these have a clear cytoplasm, few granules and mitochondria. It could be considered that they are degranulated secretory cells or that they have partially released their granules. The stroma of the organ is formed by connective tissue and smooth muscle fibers, which are immunohistochemically evidenced against desmin. Histochemical and lectin-histochemical analysis revealed the presence of different glucidic residues in the different cell types. No structural, histochemical, lectin-histochemical, and ultrastructural differences were observed between pregnant and non-pregnant females of plain viscachas, except for the expression of some lectins. The paraurethral gland of Lagostomus maximus can be used as a model for studying the gland in other species since its structural and ultrastructural characteristics do not depend on the hormonal status of the female.

Abstract
Cutaneous papillomas (CPs) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (CSCCs) are usual epidermal tumours in dogs. CPs and CSCCs probably arise from the neoplastic transformation of the keratinocytes within the stem cell compartment, since these cells are the only keratinocytes that would reside long enough to accumulate the number of molecular alterations to drive the progression towards a tumour cell phenotype. However, the role of these cells in common epidermal tumours in dogs is still unknown. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression pattern of p63 together with CK5, molecular markers of epidermal stem cells, on sections of tissue microarrays constructed from canine samples of CP and CSCC to investigate the contribution of stem cells in those canine tumours. p63/CK5 coexpression was retained in most basal and some suprabasal cells in CPs and CSCCs. In addition, increased coexpression of these molecules was observed in a group of CPs and CSCCs, as a result of a higher p63 expression. These results suggest that the coexpression of p63/CK5 may mark epidermal keratinocytes that possess self-renewal capacity rather than only stem cells, and suggest that transit amplifying cells, and even differentiated keratinocytes, may also contribute to the pathogenesis of epidermal tumours in dogs.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) are among the primary compounds regulating placental development. In bitches, relative abundance of IGF1, IGF2 and IGFR1 mRNA transcripts have been studied in the pre-implantation uterus and early endotheliochorial placentas. The IGF2 and IGFR1 distribution has also been previously described in the uterus before embryo implantation. The aim of this study was to detect, characterize, and localize the presence of IGF1, IGF2, and IGFR1 in early-developing and mature placentas of dogs. Placentas of 15 bitches were analyzed using immunohistochemistry. The IGFs were located in endometrial epithelium and glands, with the staining pattern and intensity being less in mature placentas. Cytotrophoblast cells (CTB) and syncytiotrophoblast (STB) cells contained both IGFs; the labeling was greater in CTB of the early-developing than mature placentas. The maternal endothelium was positively stained for both IGFs, while the vascular endothelium of the chorioallantoic membrane were only stained for IGF2. The IGFR1 was detected in all cell populations evaluated. Results regarding trophoblastic IGF are quite consistent with those reported in human placentas. Spatiotemporal IGFs/IGFR1 pattern might reflect the occurrence of autocrine and paracrine signaling during placentation in bitches, and the involvement in early placental developmental processes. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that, besides hemotrophic actions of plasma IGFs, endometrial secreted IGFs may promote early placental development through histotrophic signaling.

Abstract
Clinically relevant epidermal tumours in dogs include cutaneous papillomas (CPs) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (CSCCs). The development of CPs and CSCCs involves dysregulation in expression of E-cadherin/β-catenin; however, knowledge about the contribution of these molecules to epidermal tumourigenesis in dogs is limited. This study examined the immunohistochemical expression pattern of E-cadherin/β-catenin in samples of normal canine epidermis, CPs, preneoplastic epidermis and CSCCs, using tissue microarrays, in order to elucidate whether the dysregulated expression of these molecules may contribute to the pathogenesis of clinically relevant epidermal tumours in dogs. We also investigated the correlation between the immunohistochemical expression pattern of E-cadherin/β-catenin in these tissue microarrays to further evaluate whether the disruption of the adherens junction interactions plays a relevant role in canine epidermal tumourigenesis. In samples of CP and preneoplastic epidermis, the membrane immunoreactivity of E-cadherin/β-catenin was conserved, while in CSCC, the immunoreactivity of these molecules was significantly reduced, independently of the tumour location. There was significant correlation between the membrane expression of E-cadherin/β-catenin in CSCC. β-catenin also showed cytoplasmic and nuclear expression in samples of CP, preneoplastic epidermis and CSCC. These results support the hypothesis that dysregulated expression of E-cadherin/β-catenin may play a critical role in the pathogenesis of relevant canine epidermal tumours, not only due to the disruption of the intercellular adherens junctions, but also due to the dysregulated activity of the signalling pathways in which these molecules are involved.

Abstract
Osteoderms are present in a variety of extinct and extant vertebrates, but among mammals, the presence of osteoderms is essentially restricted to armadillos (Cingulata, Dasypodidae). Osteoderms have been proposed to exhibit a variety of functionalities in Dasypodidae, mainly protection and thermoregulation, and they have been considered as one of the synapomorphies of this group. In this study, we use high-resolution microcomputed tomography to describe the osteoderm micromorphology of several extant species of Dasypodidae in a comparative context. This study allowed the identification, 3D-reconstruction and volume quantification of different internal structures of osteoderms as well as their interrelations. This detailed characterization of the internal osteoderm morphology was compared in a phylogenetic context to assess the evolutionary trends of the species involved. This enables the identification of distinctive patterns for the most widely recognized clades, the Dasypodinae and Euphractinae with a morphological homogeneity in the microstructure of their osteoderms, in comparison with Tolypeutinae where it has not been possible to establish a common morphological pattern. The most important features for linage differentiation is the degree of compaction of the osteoderms, the number of cavities and the development of hairs. It is likely that the differential development of the various structures occurred as adaptive response to climate changes.

Abstract
The molecular mechanisms contributing to the development of cutaneous papillomas (CPs) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (CSCCs) are still poorly understood, limiting the ability to identify molecular suitable targets for the development of novel therapies. Persistent activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR) signalling pathway is a component of epidermal carcinogenesis in dogs. The present study describes the immunohistochemical expression pattern of two key regulatory molecules involved in the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway, phosphorylated epidermal growth factor receptor (pEGFR)Tyr1068 and phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN), in samples of normal canine epidermis, CP, preneoplastic epidermis and CSCC using tissue microarrays to determine whether the deregulated activity of these molecules is involved in the pathogenesis of these relevant epidermal tumours of dogs. Expression of pEGFR and PTEN was dysregulated in most samples of CP, preneoplastic epidermis and CSCC. Overexpression of pEGFR, together with decreased expression of PTEN, may facilitate the progression of some canine CPs and CSCCs by deregulation of the key cellular functions in which the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway is involved. These findings suggest that the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling molecules may be potential therapeutic targets for canine patients with CP and CSCC.

Abstract
We describe the morphology, histology, and histochemical characteristics of the uropygial gland (UG) of the monk parakeet Myiopsitta monachus. The UG has a heart-shape external appearance and adenomers extensively branched with a convoluted path, covered by a stratified epithelium formed by different cellular strata and divided into three zones (based on the epithelial height and lumen width), a cylindrical papilla with an internal structure of delicate type and two excretory pores surrounded by a feather tuft. Histochemical and lectin-histochemical techniques performed showed positivity against PAS, AB pH 2.5, AB-PAS, and some lectines, likely related to the granivorous feeding habits. Also, we describe the morphogenesis of the UG of the monk parakeet, which appears at embryological stage 34 as a pair of ectodermal invaginations. Heterochronic events in the onset development of the UG when compared with other birds could be recognized. Finally, to examine the phylogenetic occurrence of the UG within the Psittaciformes and infer its evolutionary history, we mapped its presence/absence over a molecular phylogeny. The reconstruction of the characters states at ancestral nodes revealed that the presence of the UG was the plesiomorphic feature for Psittaciformes and its loss evolved independently more than once.

Abstract
The lectin histochemical pattern (LHP) was characterized and compared in normal and cystic ovaries of sows. Six biotinylated lectins (PNA, SBA, WGA, RCA-1, DBA and UEA-1) were used on tissue sections. In the normal ovaries, the reaction to UEA-1 and SBA was mild to moderate in mesothelial and endothelial cells. RCA-1 staining was mild to moderate in theca interna of growing follicles, corpora luteum and mesothelium. In addition, this lectin presented strong reaction in endothelial cells, granulosa cells of atretic follicles, zona pellucida of growing follicles and plasma. DBA showed strong intensity in mesothelial and endothelial cells. There was mild to moderate reactivity to WGA in granulosa cells, corpus luteum and theca interna of follicles in development, and moderate in zona pellucida, in granulosa cells of atretic follicles and mesothelium. PNA staining was mild to moderate in oocytes and in the adventitia and media of medullary arteries. Changes in the LHP of the cystic ovaries were noted; however, there were no differences in these findings between the follicular and luteinized cysts. UEA-1 reactivity in the cystic ovaries was moderately reduced in the mesothelial and endothelial cells, whereas there was mild reduction in the DBA staining in the granulosa cells. Reaction to RCA-1 and WGA in the cysts also was decreased in theca interna, zona pellucida and granulosa cells of atretic follicles. Furthermore, endothelium and theca interna in the cystic ovaries presented mild reduction of marcation to SBA, whereas there was decreased reactivity to PNA in the oocytes and adventitia and media layers of the medullary arteries. The results of the current study show that cysts modify the LHP in swine ovaries. These changes of glycoconjugates in many ovarian structures could modify diverse process and may be one of the reasons for decreased fertility in sows.

Abstract
Cutaneous papillomas (CP) are one of the most common skin neoplasms in dogs. Different murine models have shown that persistent activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR) pathway has a central role in the development and progression of CP. The purpose of this study were to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression pattern of two key molecules involved in the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway, pAktSer473 , and pS6Ser235/236 , on 36 canine specimens of CP using a tissue microarray. The results show that the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway is persistently activated in CP of dogs, pointing to this pathway as a potential therapeutic target.

Abstract
Pinnipeds are semiaquatic carnivorans that spend most of their lives in water and use coastal terrestrial, or ice pack, environments to breed, molt and rest. Certain characteristics of the ear have been linked to ecological aspects. In our contribution we focus on the study of the macroscopic and microscopic morphology of the external ear (with the exception of the osseous outer ear canal) of six species of Southern pinnipeds. In order to recognize the different components of tissues, sections were stained following several routine protocols. In addition, double-staining and enzymatic clearing (Alcian blue-alizarin red) was performed to assess the arrangement of skeletal elements in the OEC. The basic structure of the pinna in the southern otariids studied match those previously analyzed for Northern Hemisphere species. The cartilage macro anatomy of the OEC of Mirounga leonina and Arctocephallus gazella is different from that of the Northern Hemisphere species, with only one plate of cartilage, but markedly different between them. The histology of the otariids OEC is homogeneous along the entire extension, but phocids has three different regions (distal, middle, and proximal). The cartilage histology of most phocids is also different from that of analyzed otariids, with an elastic cartilage that resembles a myxoid-like tissue, but is not present in M. leonina, were the tissue around the OEC is very rich in adipocytes. The southern elephant seal M. leonina OEC has a combination of features similar to both the rest of the phocids and to the otariids. An auditory organ that is functional both over and under water could be essential for social behavior in these species.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to describe the lectin-binding pattern in the placentas of cows infected experimentally with Neospora caninum. Four cows were inoculated intravenously with 1 × 108 tachyzoites of the NC-1 strain of N. caninum at 150 ± 7 days of pregnancy. Two control cows were administered a placebo. An indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT) was performed on serum samples obtained before and after the inoculation. The cows were killed at 30 and 37 days post inoculation. Samples of placenta were taken for histopathology and lectin histochemistry. Fetal tissues and fluids were collected for histopathology and IFAT, respectively. All infected cows had high antibody titres. All fetuses had characteristic histopathological lesions, including non-suppurative meningoencephalitis, myocarditis, hepatitis and myositis, suggesting N. caninum infection. Only two infected fetuses developed specific antibodies. Mild non-suppurative inflammatory infiltrates were recorded in the placentae. Differences in the lectin-binding pattern were observed between infected animals and controls in the glycocalyx (CON-A and WGA) and apical cytoplasm (RCA-I and CON-A) of the trophoblastic cells; giant trophoblastic cells (CON-A and DBA); glycocalyx (PNA, WGA) and apical cytoplasm (CON-A, WGA, PNA, DBA and RCA-I) of endometrial cells; trophoblast of the interplacentomal region (WGA); endothelium (CON-A, SBA, RCA-1 and WGA); and finally, mesenchyme (CON-A, RCA-1, SBA, PNA and DBA). These findings indicate that there is a distinctive pattern of lectin binding in the placenta of cattle infected with N. caninum. The direct effect of the presence of the protozoa as well as the altered expression of cytokines could explain these changes in the maternofetal interface.

Abstract
Feline injection site sarcomas (FISSs) are mesenchymal neoplasms that develop at the sites of delivery of vaccines or other injectable products. Vaccine adjuvants can trigger an intense and persistent inflammatory response that may lead to neoplastic transformation. The proinflammatory role of cyclo-oxygenase (COX)-2 is well known and its overexpression has prognostic value in multiple neoplastic processes. One hundred and seventeen FISSs were evaluated for the degree of inflammation and anaplasia. Immunohistochemistry was used to determine the expression of COX-2 in these sarcomas. There was a significant association between the degree of inflammation and the expression of COX-2 by neoplastic cells. COX-2 expression was lower in tumours with higher degrees of anaplasia. These findings may be useful in predicting the sensitivity of FISSs to treatment with COX-2 inhibitors. The potential therapeutic use of such agents could then be restricted to tumours with lower degrees of anaplasia.

Abstract
Lectin binding relies on the affinity of these substances for specific terminal sugars. The method facilitates the identification of complex structures to which the terminal sugar attaches and may reveal physiological or pathological changes in cells, intracellular interactions or extracellular transport pathways. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of infection with Brucella abortus on the pattern of lectin binding in bovine fetal lungs (n=6) and bovine placentas (n=5). Fetal lungs and placenta from heifers experimentally inoculated with B. abortus, strain 2308 were examined by histological, lectin-histochemical, immunohistochemical and cultural techniques. B. abortus antigens were immunohistochemically detected in fetal lungs and placenta. An increase in the labeling with UEA-1, DBA, PNA, RCA-1 and SBA was found in the lungs and an increase in the labeling with UEA-1, ConA, PNA, DBA was found in the placentas. The present lectin histochemical study revealed a distinctive pattern of oligosaccharide distribution in the lungs and placenta of B. abortus-infected fetuses.

Abstract
The placenta is a highly vascularized organ, indispensable tothe transfer of nutrients to the growing fetuses. During gestation, there exists an expansion of the placental vascular network through active angiogenesis. The aim of this research was to study cell proliferation and apoptosis through high resolution light microscopy (HRLM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) ultrastructure, immunohistochemistry for Ki67and caspase-3, determination of placental vascular area,and TUNEL assay. Crossbred sows placental tissues from approximately 30±2(n=5), 40±2(n=5), 60±2 (n=5), 80±2(n=5), 90±2(n=5) and 114±2(n=5) days of gestation were used. The evaluation of cell proliferation showed the highest%Ki67 values on days 30±2 and 80±2 of pregnancy. Caspase-3 expressed the highest value on day 30±2, while the highest apoptotic indexes were found on days30±2 and 90±2. The placental vascular area was higher on day 80±2 of pregnancy. According to our results, an active vascular cell remodeling by a caspase-3 dependent apoptosis seems to be present in early pregnancy. The increase in the vascular area on day 80±2 would be the result of the intense vascular cell proliferation detected with Ki67. Further studies are needed to understand the complex processes of angiogenesis, cell proliferation and apoptosis that interact in the placenta during porcine gestation.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is an industrial and environmental pollutant that produces toxic effects on gametogenesis, pre- and post-implantation embryos, and the placenta. Because the effects of acute Cd intoxication on the placenta are not well understood, we investigated changes in its glycosylated components in Cd treated dams at days 4, 7, 10 and 15 of gestation using lectin histochemistry. CdCl2 was administered to pregnant rats; control animals received sterile normal saline. Placentas were processed for DBA, Con A, SBA, PNA, UEA-I, RCA-I and WGA lectin histochemistry to evaluate changes in the carbohydrate pattern of the placenta that might modify cell interactions and contribute to embryonic alterations. Lectin binding was analyzed in the yolk sac; trophoblast giant cells; trophoblast I, II and III; spongiotrophoblast cells and endovascular trophoblast cells in the chorioallantoic placenta. Our lectin binding patterns showed that Cd caused alteration of SBA and DBA labeling of trophoblast-derived cells, which suggested increased expressions of α and β GalNAc. Cd also caused decreased UEA-1 binding affinity, which indicated fewer α-L-Fuc residues in placentas of Cd treated dams. The nonreactivity in trophoblast I of the control placentas incubated with Con-A contrasted with the labeling in placentas of experimental dams, which indicated increased expression of terminal α-D-Man, and α-D-Glc residues. We found that Cd altered the reactivity of placenta to several lectins, which indicated modification of the glycotype presented by the fetal component of the placenta. We report that Cd exerts a deleterious effect on the glycosylation pattern of the placenta.

Abstract
This study describes the changes observed in the placentas of mice experimentally infected with an abortigenic strain of EHV-1 at mid-pregnancy and euthanized at days 3 and 4 post-infection. We analyzed microscopic vascular alterations, cell proliferation and death by immunohistochemistry, and the expression of IFN-γ, TNF-α and the IL-10 by qPCR and flow cytometry. Infected mice showed slight respiratory signs and ruffled fur during the first two days post-infection. Virus isolation and DNA detection were positive only in the lungs of the infected mice. Vascular congestion, increase in the labyrinth area, and a significant reduction in fetal capillary endothelium surface of infected placentas were found. Cell proliferation was significantly reduced in the infected placentas, whereas the apoptosis was significantly increased. IL10, TNF and IFN-γ showed different expression in the infected placentas and uteri. The effects of EHV-1 during pregnancy depend on different pathogenic mechanisms in which vascular alterations, and cell death and proliferation and local cytokine changes are compromised.

Abstract
The Neotropical catfish Corydoras paleatus is a facultative air-breather and the caudal half of the intestine is involved in gas exchange. In South America, air-breathing fishes are found in tropical or sub-tropical freshwaters where the probability of hypoxia is high. The aim of this study was to characterize by traditional histochemical and lectinhistochemical methods the pattern of carbohydrate in the intestinal mucosa. Intestine samples were taken from 25 healthy adult specimens collected in Buenos Aires (Argentina). Samples were fixed by immersion in 10 % buffered formalin and routinely processed and embedded in paraffin wax. Subsequently, these sections were incubated in the biotinylated lectins battery. Labeled Streptavidin-Biotin (LSAB) system was used for detection, diaminobenzidine as chromogen and haematoxylin as a contrast. To locate and distinguish glycoconjugates (GCs) of the globet cells, we used the following histochemical methods: PAS; PAS*S; KOH/PA*S; PA/Bh/KOH/PAS; KOH/PA*/Bh/PAS; Alcian Blue and Toluidine Blue at different pHs. Microscopically, the general structure of vertebrate intestine was observed and showed all the cell types characteristic of the intestinal epithelium. The cranial sector of catfish intestine is a site of digestion and absorption and its structure is similar to other fish groups. In contrast, enterocytes of the caudal portion are low cuboidal cells; and between these, globet cells and capillaries are observed, these latter may reach the mucosal lumen. Underlying the epithelium, observed a well-developed lamina propria-submucosa made of connective tissue; this layer was highly vascularized and did not exhibit glands. According to histochemistry, the diverse GCs elaborated and secreted in the intestine are associated with specific functions in relation to their physiological significance, with special reference to their role in lubrication, buffering effect and prevention of proteolytic damage to the epithelium together with other biological processes, such as osmoregulation and ion exchange. The lectinhistochemical analysis of the intestinal mucosa reveals the presence of terminal residues of glucose, mannose and galactose. In conclusion, this study has shown that GCs synthesized in the intestine of C. paleatus exhibit a high level of histochemical complexity and that the lectin binding pattern of the intestinal mucosa is characteristic of each species and the variations are related with the multiple functions performed by the mucus in the digestive tract. The information generated here may be a relevant biological tool for comparing and analyzing the possible glycosidic changes in the intestinal mucus under different conditions, such as changes in diet or different pathological stages.

Abstract
Secreted mucins constitute a crucial part of the gel that protects respiratory and digestive epithelia, being MUC2/Muc2 the predominant gel-forming mucin of the intestine while MUC5AC/Muc5ac is one of the gel-forming mucins most expressed at the airways. In this study, we have analyzed Muc2 and Muc5ac during rat development by using immunohistochemistry, Western blotting and RT-PCR. We demonstrated that rat Muc2 was expressed in fetal intestinal goblet cells of surface epithelium of villi and developing Lieberkühn crypts. In neonates and adults, Muc2 was expressed at luminal goblet cells of small and large intestine and at gastric mucous and glandular cells. Muc5ac protein was observed in embryonic gastric and lung samples; expression increased during development and postnatal and adult life. After birth, a low reaction was detected at the tracheal surface epithelium and glands, which increased in adults.

Abstract
PROBLEM Galectins influence the progress of pregnancy by regulating key processes associated with embryo-maternal cross talk, including angiogenesis and placentation. Galectin family members exert multiple roles in the context of hemochorial and epitheliochorial placentation; however, the galectin prolife in endotheliochorial placenta remains to be investigated. METHOD OF STUDY Here, we used immunohistochemistry to analyze galectin (gal)-1, gal-3 and gal-9 expression during early and late endotheliochorial placentation in two different species (dogs and cats). RESULTS We found that during early feline gestation, all three galectin members were more strongly expressed on trophoblast and maternal vessels compared to the decidua. This was accompanied by an overall decrease of gal-1, gal-3 and gal-9 expressions in late feline gestation. In canine early pregnancy, we observed that gal-1 and gal-9 were expressed strongly in cytotrophoblast (CTB) cells compared to gal-3, and no galectin expression was observed in syncytiotrophoblast (STB) cells. Progression of canine gestation was accompanied by increased gal-1 and gal-3 expressions on STB cells, whereas gal-9 expression remained similar in CTB and STB. CONCLUSION These data suggest that both the maternal and fetal compartments are characterized by a spatiotemporal regulation of galectin expression during endotheliochorial placentation. This strongly suggests the involvement of the galectin family in important developmental processes during gestation including immunemodulation, trophoblast invasion and angiogenesis. A conserved functional role for galectins during mammalian placental development emerges from these studies.

Abstract
The uropygial glands of birds are sebaceous organs that contribute to the water-repellent properties of the feather coat. We studied the histological and histochemical characteristics of the uropygial gland of chimango caracara using hematoxylin and eosin (H & E), Gomori´s trichrome, orcein, Gomori´s reticulin, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), Alcian blue (AB) and a variety of lectins. The gland is composed of two lobes and a papilla with 20 downy feathers. It is surrounded by a capsule of dense connective tissue that contains elastic, reticular and smooth muscle fibers. The papilla is delicate and has two excretory ducts. The gland mass relative to body mass was 0.143%. Both adenomer cells and their secretions were stained with Sudan IV, PAS and AB, and were positive for numerous lectins that indicated the presence of lipids and carbohydrates. Immunohistochemical techniques to detect PCNA confirmed cell proliferation in the basal stratum of the adenomer cells. The lipids and glycoconjugates secreted by the uropygial gland serve numerous functions including protection against microorganisms.

Abstract
Over the last few years rhomboid genes have gained interest because of its association with cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. In previous studies, we demonstrated that human RHBDD2 is over-expressed in the advanced stages of breast and colorectal cancers, suggesting a favorable role in cell proliferation. So far little is known about the expression of RHBDD2 in other tissues and other species, and because of similarities between cancer and embryonic cells, this study focused on the evaluation of Rhbdd2 expression in embryonic and adult rat tissues. By IHC and RT-PCR, Rhbdd2 was identified in early stages of most tissues analyzed, with high expression in brain, spinal cord, kidney and embryonic skin. In adult tissues, the expression remained elevated while salivary glands became positive. Furthermore, Rhbdd2 showed a high expression in the most proliferative stages of the rat mammary gland. Indeed, similar findings were observed in the mouse mammary epithelial cell line HC11, in which Rhbdd2 resides in the Golgi apparatus, and at different stages of mouse mammary gland development. Therefore, Rhbdd2 would be implicated in embryonic and adult tissue proliferation.

Abstract
In the present study we histochemically and lectinhistochemically characterized the growing oocytes of the pink cuskeel (Genypterus blacodes). We used histochemical methods for the localization and characterization of glycoconjugates (GCs) and lectin histochemical techniques for the identification of specific sugar residues. We analyzed presence and distribution of GCs in the different structures of the growing follicles (cortical alveoli, globules, yolk granules and zona radiata). During the initial stage of vitellogenesis, the oocytes presented small yolk granules composed of GCs that gradually increased during exogenous vitellogenesis. These GCs contained moderate quantities of α-D-mannose, D-glucose, N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetyl-neuraminic acid. The cortical alveoli contained both neutral and carboxylated GCs, and lectin techniques detected N-acetylgalactosamine, galactose and L-fucose. The zona radiata showed a strong positive reaction to PAS and it reacted weakly with more specific techniques, such as KOH/PA*S and PA/Bh/KOH/PAS. This structure showed GCs with oxidizable vicinal diols, O-acyl sugars and sialic acid residues with different substitution types and presented N-acetylgalactosamine and L-fucose specific residues. The oocytes follicular envelope evidenced neutral and acidic non-sulfated GCs and high concentrations of α-D-mannose, D-glucose, galactose and N-acetylgalactosamine. The intergranular cytoplasmic GCs were mainly rich in α-D-mannose, D-glucose, N-acetylgalactosamine, N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetyl-neuraminic acid. These results enhance the comprehension of the structure and functionality of the pink cuskeel ovarian follicles, and provide a useful tool for the study of this tissue in other teleost species.
