Abstract
BACKGROUND Presenteeism is an important factor in workers' health. However, few studies have examined how variables such as socio-economic status, health status, workplace status and health literacy correlate with and affect presenteeism. AIMS To assess the correlates of presenteeism with a focus on health-related factors, work-related factors and health literacy. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study of 2914 Japanese workers from one company. We used a self-administered questionnaire to assess socio-demographic characteristics, health status, work environment, presenteeism and health literacy. RESULTS Forty-one per cent of participants were under 40 years of age and 70% were male. We found that 59% of the participants were at high risk of presenteeism. Presenteeism was associated with sex, age, household income, marital status, health-related factors (i.e. self-rated health status, dietary choices, exercise habits), work-related factors (i.e. workplace support, job demands, job control) and health literacy. Logistic regression analyses indicated that presenteeism was associated with self-rated health status, overtime hours, workplace support, job demands, job control and health literacy after adjusting for sex, age and income. CONCLUSIONS Health-related factors, work-related factors and health literacy are all associated with presenteeism. Improving the workplace environment, especially factors such as overtime working hours, workplace support, job demands and job control, and increasing health literacy may reduce presenteeism among general office workers.

Abstract
It is controversial whether past hepatitis B virus infection constitutes an additional risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV). The incidence of HCC between 1994 and 2004 was analysed among 1262 patients who were only positive for HCV. The cumulative incidence of HCC was assessed by Kaplan-Meier analysis and the difference between two groups was assessed by the log-rank test. The effect of anti-HBc positivity on the risk of HCC was assessed with multivariate Cox proportional analysis. Anti-HBc was positive in 522 (41.4%) patients. The proportion of male patients (56.7 vs 46.8%, P < 0.001) and mean age (60.8 vs 56.9 years, P < 0.001) were significantly higher in the anti-HBc positive group. HCC developed in 339 patients (mean follow-up 7.0 years), with cumulative incidence rates at 3, 5 and 10 years of 12.7, 24.5 and 41.9% in the anti-HBc positive group and 10.6, 17.7 and 33.4% in the negative group, respectively (P = 0.005). However, anti-HBc seropositivity did not reach statistical significance in multivariate analysis including age and gender (hazard ratio, 1.06; 95% CI, 0.85-1.31; P = 0.63). Anti-HBc positivity and HCC incidence were confounded by male gender and older age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Visceral fat accumulation reportedly increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development in patients with chronic liver disease. However, it has not been fully elucidated whether visceral fat accumulation increases the risk of HCC recurrence after curative treatment in patients with suspected non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Therefore this was investigated in the current study. METHODS 62 patients with naive HCC with suspected NASH were enrolled. All were curatively treated with percutaneous radiofrequency ablation between 1999 and 2006. The visceral fat area (VFA) was determined in each patient from CT images, taken at the time of HCC diagnosis. Patients were divided into two groups based on VFA: the high VFA group (>130 cm(2) in males, >90 cm(2) in females, n = 27) and the others (n = 35). The effects of VFA on HCC recurrence were analysed together with other factors including patients' background, tumour-related factors and liver function-related factors. RESULTS The cumulative recurrence rates differed significantly between the two groups; 15.9, 56.5 and 75.1% at 1, 2 and 3 years, respectively, in the high VFA group, and 9.7, 31.1 and 43.1%, respectively, in the controls (p = 0.018). Multivariate analysis indicated visceral fat accumulation (risk ratio 1.08, per 10 cm(2), p = 0.046) and older age (risk ratio 1.06 per 1 year, p = 0.04) as independent risk factors of HCC recurrence. CONCLUSIONS Visceral fat accumulation is an independent risk factor of HCC recurrence after curative treatment in patients with suspected NASH.

Abstract
Intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) can be identified among epithelial cells in systemic mucosal tissues. Although intestinal IELs play a crucial role in mucosal immunity, their bronchial counterparts have not been well studied. The purpose of this study was to determine the immunological functions of human bronchial IELs, which interact directly with epithelial cells, unlike lamina propria lymphocytes (LPLs). We isolated successfully bronchial IELs and LPLs using a magnetic cell separation system from the T cell suspensions extracted from bronchial specimens far from the tumours of resected lungs. Human bronchial IELs showed an apparent type 1 cytokine profile and proliferated more actively in response to CD2 signalling than did bronchial LPLs. CD8(+) IELs were identified as the most significant sources of interferon (IFN)-gamma. Human bronchial epithelial cells constitutively produced the T cell growth factors interleukin (IL)-7 and IL-15, and levels of those factors increased when cells were stimulated by IFN-gamma. Bronchial epithelial cells expressed cell surface proteins CD58 and E-cadherin, possibly enabling adhesion to IELs. In summary, human bronchial IELs have immunological functions distinct from bronchial LPLs and may interact with epithelial cells to maintain mucosal homeostasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Hypericum perforatum is a perennial herbaceous plant and an extract from this plant has a significant antidepressant effect when administered to humans. The plant is characterized by its secretory glands, also known as dark glands, which are mainly visible on leaves and flowers. The current study evaluates the influence of several environmental factors and developmental stages of the plant on the accumulation and synthesis of hypericin and pseudohypericin (Hy-G), the major bioactive constituents, in H. perforatum plants. METHODS The appearance of dark glands on different parts of the plant, under several environmental conditions, was monitored by microscopy. Hy-G concentrations were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography. KEY RESULTS A significant presence of dark glands accompanying the highest concentrations of Hy-G was observed in the stamen tissues more than in any other organ of H. perforatum. A linear relationship between the number of dark glands and net photosynthetic rate of the leaf and Hy-G concentration in the leaf tissue was also established. A very high concentration of Hy-G was measured in the dark-gland tissues, but in the tissues without any dark glands it was almost absent. The presence of emodin, a precursor of Hy-G, at a high concentration in the dark-gland tissues, and its absence in the surrounding tissues was also observed, suggesting that the site of biosynthesis of Hy-G is in the dark-gland cells. A significantly low concentration of Hy-G (occasionally non-detectable) was measured in the xylem sap of the stem tissues. The dark-gland tissues collected from leaves, stems or flowers contained similar concentrations of Hy-G. CONCLUSIONS The concentration of Hy-G in various organs of H. perforatum plants is dependent on the number of dark glands, their size or area, not on the location of the dark glands on the plant. The study provides the first experimental evidence that Hy-G is synthesized and accumulates in dark glands.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the effectiveness of core vitrectomy preceding triple corneal procedure (penetrating keratoplasty, extracapsular cataract extraction, and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation). METHODS Thirty one consecutive eyes of 31 patients with indication for triple corneal procedure were randomly assigned to either triple procedure with core vitrectomy (vitrectomy group) or without vitrectomy (control group). The success rate of IOL implantation, IOL positioning, intraoperative and postoperative complications, endothelial cell loss, and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were compared. Follow up period was six months. Factors that may contribute to vitreous pressure elevation were also investigated in each case. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference in each clinical parameter examined except a tendency of facilitating IOL implantation (p = 0.11). There were two cases of vitreous loss in the control group. Retinal detachment was not seen in any of the cases. The body mass index and age were related to higher vitreous pressure (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Core vitrectomy preceding triple corneal procedure is not necessary for all cases.

Abstract
AIM To determine the efficacy of using albumin tear supplements in the treatment of ocular surface disorders as a substitute for serum eye drops. METHODS The effects of albumin on the viability of serum deprived conjunctival cell were observed in vitro. The ability for albumin to compensate for serum was demonstrated by measuring the activity of the apoptosis related enzyme, caspase-3. In an animal study, corneal erosions were inflicted in 40 Japanese white rabbits. Rabbits were treated with 5% or 10% solutions of human albumin, and the decrease in epithelial defect size was compared with saline control and 0.3% sodium hyaluronate. A clinical case series trial of 5% albumin drops was conducted in nine patients with Sjögren's syndrome with severe dry eye. RESULTS The addition of albumin to serum deprived conjunctival cells inhibited caspase activity and increased cell viability, showing that albumin can compensate for some of the physiological properties of serum. Corneal erosions in rabbits healed significantly faster (p<0.05) in eyes treated with 10% albumin compared with control and sodium hyaluronate. Patients with Sjögren's syndrome used albumin drops showed statistically significant improvement in fluorescein and rose bengal scores, but not in tear break up time and subjective symptoms. No adverse effects of albumin were observed during the study. CONCLUSIONS The use of albumin as a protein supplement in artificial tear solutions is a viable approach in the treatment of ocular surface disorders associated with tear deficiency.

Abstract
A fundamental study was conducted to develop a facility having an adequate air circulation system for growing healthy plants over a long-term under microgravity conditions in space. To clarify the effects of gravity on heat exchange between plant leaves and the ambient air, surface temperatures of sweet potato and barley leaves and replica leaves made of wet paper and copper were evaluated at gravity levels of 0.01, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 g for 20 s each during parabolic aeroplane flights. Thermal images were captured using infrared thermography at an air temperature of 26 degrees C, a relative humidity of 18% and an irradiance of 260 W m-2. Mean leaf temperatures increased by 0.9-1.0 degrees C with decreasing gravity levels from 1.0 to 0.01 g and decreased by 0.5 degrees C with increasing gravity levels from 1.0 to 2.0 g. The increase in leaf temperatures was at most 1.9 degrees C for sweet potato leaves over 20 s as gravity decreased from 1.0 to 0.01 g. The boundary layer conductance to sensible heat exchange decreased by 5% when the gravity decreased from 1.0 to 0.01 g at the air velocity of 0.2 m s-1. The decrease in the boundary layer conductance with decrease in the gravity levels was more significant in a lower air velocity. Heat exchange between leaves and the ambient air was more retarded at lower gravity levels because of less sensible and latent heat transfers with less heat convection.

Abstract
The measurement of plant chlorophyll fluorescence has been used for many years as a method to monitor a plant's health status. These types of methods have been mostly relegated to the laboratory. The newly developed Relative Referencing Method allows for the measurement of chlorophyll fluorescence under artificial lighting conditions. The fluorescence signal can be determined by first taking a reference signal measurement, then a second measurement with an additional fluorescence excitation source. The first signal can then be subtracted from the second and the plant's chlorophyll fluorescence due to the second lighting source can be determined. With this simple approach, a photosynthesizing plant can be monitored to detect signs of water stress. Using this approach experiments on tomato plants have shown that it was possible to detect water stress, while the plants were continuously illuminated by fluorescent lamps. This method is a promising tool for the remote monitoring of crops grown in a CELSS-type application.

Abstract
AIM To test the short term efficacy and safety of an infrared warm compression device (IWCD, Eye Hot, Cept Co, Tokyo, Japan) as treatment for non-inflamed meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). METHODS 37 subjects with non-inflamed obstructive MGD, with and without aqueous tear deficiency (ATD) dry eye, participated in a prospective non-comparative interventional case series. Symptom scores, face scores, tear evaporation rates, fluorescein and rose bengal vital staining, tear break up time (BUT), Schirmer test, meibomian gland obstruction, and meibography were compared before and after 2 weeks of therapy. RESULTS In a total of 37 cases, total subjective symptom scores and subjective face scores improved significantly, from 12.3 (SD 5.9) to 8.4 (6.1), and from 7.0 (1.7) to 5.3 (2.0) (both p <0.0001). The results for tear evaporation rates during forced blinking (p = 0.002), fluorescein staining (p = 0.03), rose bengal staining (p = 0.03), BUT (p <0.0001), and meibomian gland orifice obstruction score (p <0.0001) had also improved significantly at the end of the 2 week period of infrared thermotherapy. No complaints and/or complications of the IWCD were reported. CONCLUSION The IWCD was effective and safe for the treatment of MGD. Improved tear stability associated with release of meibum is a possible mechanism of this treatment.

Abstract
Several reports have suggested that the prevalence of asthma in adults is currently increasing. However, recent prevalence of asthma has not reported in Japan, especially in rural-mountain areas. To investigate the prevalence of asthma in adults in Japan, we conducted clinical epidemiological research on 5066 inhabitants of Menda town, in a rural-mountain area of Japan. The study population comprised 98.7% of adults in the town, including senior high school students whose age were more than 15 years old. The prevalence of asthma among adults was 3.6%. The ratio of prevalence in males to prevalence in females was 1.44. Peaks prevalences were observed in the age ranges of 15-19 and > 70 years old in males, and 15-19, 40-49 and > 70 years old in females.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the efficacy of autologous serum drops in the treatment of superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK). METHODS Twenty-two eyes of 11 patients were diagnosed with SLK. All eyes were treated with 20% diluted autologous serum eyedrops 10 times a day in addition to ongoing treatment of dry eye. Fluorescein and rose bengal staining scores, as well as subjective symptom gradings, were performed before and after 4 weeks of therapy. RESULTS Nine of the 11 patients responded well to treatment (82%). The average rose bengal and fluorescein score improved ( p < 0.05), and there was subjective improvement. CONCLUSION Autologous serum application can be used as an alternative mode of therapy in SLK.

Abstract
We describe a 74-year-old patient with dyspnoea and tachypnoea induced by chlorpromadinone acetate, a synthetic progesterone used to treat prostatic hyperplasia. The dyspnoea, tachypnoea and hypocapnia improved after discontinuing the chlorpromadinone acetate. It is important to recognize that synthetic progesterones can cause dyspnoea and hyperventilation.

Abstract
We examined the reactivity of 3-alkyl group homologues of farnesyl diphosphate or isopentenyl diphosphate for medium-chain prenyl diphosphate synthases, hexaprenyl diphosphate- or heptaprenyl diphosphate synthase. But-3-enyl diphosphate, which lacks the methyl group at the 3-position of isopentenyl diphosphate, condensed only once with farnesyl diphosphate to give E-norgeranylgeranyl diphosphate by the action of either enzyme. However, norfarnesyl diphosphate was never accepted as an allylic substrate at all. 3-Ethylbut-3-enyl diphosphate also reacted with farnesyl diphosphate giving a mixture of (all-E)-3-ethyl-7,11,15-trimethylhexadeca-2,6,10,14-tetraenyl- and (all-E)-3,7-diethyl-11,15,19-trimethylicosa-2,6,10,14,18-pentaenyl diphosphates by hexaprenyl diphosphate synthase. On the other hand, heptaprenyl diphosphate synthase reaction of 3-ethylbut-3-enyl diphosphate with farnesyl diphosphate gave only (all-E)-3-ethyl-7,11,15-trimethylhexadeca-2,6,10,14-tetraenyl diphosphate.

Abstract
A 17-year-old girl receiving high-dose methotrexate for the treatment of osteosarcoma developed complications of acute renal failure and liver dysfunction with a coagulation disorder. The methotrexate concentrations were quickly reduced from 600 micromol/L to 50 micromol/L by treatment with plasma exchange and hemodialysis at 72 hours after discontinuation of the drug. After this reduction, continuous hemodiafiltration was initiated to further lower the methotrexate concentrations because of the persistently high and then the actual rebound in the plasma concentrations after plasma exchange and hemodialysis treatment. Continuous hemodiafiltration was able to reduce the concentrations without any rebound, despite its low column clearance. The rebound in plasma methotrexate concentrations seems to be corrected by plasma methotrexate after plasma exchange and/or hemodialysis.

Abstract
The sal gene comprised of 1266 nucleotides encoding salicylate hydroxylase was cloned from the chromosomal DNA of Pseudomonas putida S-1 and sequenced [Suzuki, K., Mizuguchi, M., Ohnishi, K. and Itagaki, E. (1996) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1275, 154-156]. Here, we describe the nucleotide sequences of the regulatory region of the sal gene and an ORF (salR gene) divergently oriented from the sal gene, which encodes the protein SalR. This gene product positively controls sal gene expression at the transcriptional level. The salR gene consists of 930 base pairs starting from a GTG codon and encodes a protein of 309 amino acids with a molecular mass of 34 542 Da. The amino-acid sequence is homologous to LysR-family regulatory proteins such as CatR of P. putida RB1 and has helix-turn-helix DNA binding motif near its N-terminal. Transcription start sites of sal and salR genes were determined to lie 30- and 24-bp upstream of the respective initiation codons and separated from each other by 78 nucleotides. A Shine-Dalgarno sequence and the putative promoter sequences containing -10 and -35 sequences were seen in the sal and salR genes. Expression of the salR gene on a plasmid in Escherichia coli cells was confirmed by DNA mobility shift assay. For the overexpression of the salR gene, it was cloned to pET28a (pSAHR) which was transferred to E. coli BL21 (E. coli BL21/pSAHR), and expressed by an inducer, isopropyl thio-beta-D-galactoside. SalR was further purified to homogeneity from the cell-free extracts in yields of approximately 3 mg.L-1 culture volume. The molecular mass was determined to be 33 kDa and the N-terminal amino-acid sequence was the same as that deduced from the nucleotide sequence of salR gene. Native SalR was also purified to homogeneity from P. putida S-1 with very low contents. The properties of the protein were similar to those of SalR expressed in E. coli.

Abstract
We performed this prospective study to evaluate the efficacy of esophageal detector devices (EDDs), both the bulb and the syringe-type, to indicate positioning of endotracheal tubes (ETTs) in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients. Forty-eight adult patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest were enrolled. Immediately after tracheal intubation and ETT cuff inflation in the emergency department, the patients were allocated randomly to two cross-over groups. In Group 1 (n = 24), patients underwent a bulb test and a syringe test in sequence. In Group 2 (n = 24), patients underwent a syringe test and a bulb test in sequence. End-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO(2)) was also monitored. In 56 attempts at tracheal intubation, the bulb, the syringe, and ETCO(2) indicated all eight esophageal intubations. In 48 tracheal intubations, the bulb test correctly indicated 34 tracheal intubations (sensitivity, 70.8%). The syringe test identified 35 tracheal intubations (sensitivity, 72.9%). The results of both tests agreed in 33 tracheal intubations. ETCO(2) was detected in 31 tracheal intubations (sensitivity, 64.6%). No statistical difference was found among the tests. EDDs were less sensitive in detecting tracheal intubation for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients. Therefore, proper clinical judgment in conjunction with these devices should be used to confirm ETT placement in these difficult situations.

Abstract
To clarify the effects of gravity on heat/gas exchange between plant leaves and the ambient air, the leaf temperatures and net photosynthetic rates of plant leaves were evaluated at 0.01, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 G of 20 seconds each during a parabolic airplane flight. Thermal images of leaves were captured using infrared thermography at an air temperature of 26 degrees C, a relative humidity of 15% and an irradiance of 260 W m-2. The net photosynthetic rates were determined by using a chamber method with an infrared gas analyzer at an air temperature of 20 degrees C, a relative humidity of 50% and a photosynthetic photon flux of 0.5 mmol m-2 s-1. The mean leaf temperature increased by 1 degree C and the net photosynthetic rate decreased by 13% with decreasing gravity levels from 1.0 to 0.01 G. The leaf temperature decreased by 0.5 degree C and the net photosynthetic rate increased by 7% with increasing gravity levels from 1.0 to 2.0 G. Heat/gas exchanges between leaves and the ambient air were more retarded at lower gravity levels. A restricted free air convection under microgravity conditions in space would limit plant growth by retarding heat and gas exchanges between leaves and the ambient air.

Abstract
Researchers from 5 Japanese universities have developed a plant growth facility (Space Plant Box) for seed to seed experiments under microgravity. The breadboard model of the Space Plant Box was fabricated by assembling subsystems developed for microgravity. The subsystems include air conditioning and water recycle system, air circulation system, water and nutrient delivery system, lighting system and plant monitoring system. The air conditioning and water recycle system is simply composed of a single heat exchanger, two fans and hydrophilic fibrous strings. The strings allow water movement from the cooler fin in the Cooling Box to root supporting materials in the Plant Growth Chamber driven by water potential deficit. Relative humidity in the Plant Growth Chamber can be changed over a wide range by controlling the ratio of latent heat exchange to sensible heat exchange on the cooling fin of the heat exchanger. The transpiration rate was successfully measured by circulating air inside the Plant Growth Chamber only. Most water was recycled and a small amount of water needed to be added from the outside. The simple, air conditioning and water recycle system for the Space Plant Box showed good performance through a barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) growth experiment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To determine the sensitivity and specificity of the self-inflating bulb (SIB) to verify tracheal intubation in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients. METHODS Sixty-five consecutive adult patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest were enrolled. Patients were provided chest compression and ventilation by either ba-valve-mask or the esophageal tracheal double-lumen airway by ambulance crews when they arrived at the authors' department. Immediately after intubation in the emergency department, the endotracheal tube position was tested by the SIB and end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) monitor using an infrared carbon dioxide analyzer. We observed the SIB reinflating for 10 s, and full reinflation within 4 s was defined as a positive result (tracheal intubation). RESULTS Five esophageal intubations occurred, and the SIB correctly identified all esophageal intubations. Of the 65 tracheal intubations, the SIB correctly identified 47 tubes placed in the trachea (72.3%). Delayed but full reinflation occurred in one tracheal intubation during the 10-s observation period. Fifteen tracheal intubations had incomplete reinflation during the observation period, and two tracheal intubations did not achieve any reinflation. Thirty-nine tracheal intubations were identified by ETCO2 (60%). When the SIB test is combined with the ETCO2 detection, 59 tracheal intubations were identified with a 90.8% sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS The authors found a high incidence of false-negative results of the SIB in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients. Because no single test for verifying endotracheal tube position is reliable, all available modalities should be tested and used in conjunction with proper clinical judgment to verify tracheal intubation in cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Abstract
Thymidine phosphorylase (dThdPase)/platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor (PD-ECGF) is expressed at higher levels in a variety of human carcinomas than in adjacent normal tissue. The higher expression is associated with an increase in intratumoral microvessel density (IMVD) and an unfavorable patient prognosis. This study examined the role of dThdPase in apoptosis, IMVD and p53 expression in human gastric carcinomas, dThdPase expression was noted in 12 (35.3%) of 34 early carcinomas, and in 20 (55.6%) of 36 advanced carcinomas. At least 10 areas consisting of carcinoma cells with diffuse dThdPase expression from the 32 dThdPase-positive tumors (category I), and 10 areas without dThdPase expression from the 38 negative tumors (category II) were selected from each case. For early gastric carcinoma, the mean IMVD was 88.8+/-19.4 in category I and 61.4+/-17.3 in category II carcinomas, while for advanced gastric carcinoma, the mean IMVD was 98.8+/-21.0 in category I and 76.0+/-27.1 in category II carcinomas. The mean IMVD was significantly higher in category I than in category II tumors (P<0.05). The mean apoptotic index (AI: percentage of apoptotic cells) was 1.95+/-1.30 in category I, and 3.76+/-1.49 in category II carcinomas for early gastric carcinoma, and 1.51+/-0.98 in category I and 2.14+/-0.66 in category II carcinomas for advanced gastric carcinoma, the value of the mean AI being significantly (P<0.05) higher in dThdPase-negative tumors (category II) than in the positive tumors (category I), regardless of tumor stage or histological type. There was a significant inverse correlation (P<0.001) between AI and IMVD. These results indicate that dThdPase expression is associated with both an increase in intratumoral microvessels and a decrease in apoptosis in human gastric carcinomas.

Abstract
For suction of water from a water supply vessel including both water and air under microgravity and g-jitter conditions, a water suction system using hydrophilic fibrous cloth was developed and its performance was evaluated at 0.01-0.02 g-realized for 20 s by parabolic flight in an aircraft. Vessels used for the experiment were glass flasks and had a suction port for suction filtration. A piece of hydrophilic fibrous cloth was arranged along the inner surface of the vessels and the end was fixed to the suction port of the vessels. In vessel without hydrophilic cloths and containing 220 mL of water, the water did not move more than 5 mm along the inner surface and did not reach the suction port under low gravity. When hydrophilic cloths were used, on the other hand, water gathered onto the cloth surface, moved up along the cloth and reached the suction port under low gravity. The amount of water sucked from vessels varied with the amount of water in the vessel and the sectional area of hydrophilic cloths. When the vessels including both water and air were flown during parabolic flight (10(-4) g), water in the vessel moved along the cloth and a water film was formed on the cloth. These results indicated that it is possible to suck water using the fibrous cloth suction system under low gravity and microgravity conditions. Under low gravity conditions, it was difficult to suck water only. However, it is not necessary to separate water from air when the system is used for supplying water to plant root medium consisting of both liquid and gas phases.

Abstract
Intestinal intraepithelial T lymphocytes (i-IELs) show features different from those of conventional T cells and play specific roles in the mucosal immunity. To investigate whether human bronchial intraepithelial T lymphocytes (IELs) are a distinct entity, we examined T cells in human bronchial xenografts transplanted on mice with severe combined immune deficiency (SCID). We transplanted human bronchi subcutaneously into mice with SCID, resected the xenografts after various incubation periods (7-174 d), and examined them for CD3(+), CD4(+), CD8(+), and CD45(+) cells by immunohistochemistry. The number of CD3(+) cells in the lamina propria decreased significantly in the first month (from 308.7 +/- 60.2 to 70.9 +/- 49. 4/mm(2); P < 0.05), and xenografts more than 5 mo of age had scant T cells in the lamina propria (5.2 +/- 2.0/mm(2)). However, there was no significant difference between the number of CD3(+) IELs in freshly isolated bronchi and in xenografts maintained for more than 5 mo. In freshly isolated bronchi, the number of CD4(+) IELs was significantly lower than that of CD8(+) cells (2.35 +/- 0.62 versus 4.56 +/- 1.32/mm basement membrane; P < 0.01). After transplantation, the mean CD4-to-CD8 ratio of all xenografts was significantly higher than that of freshly isolated bronchi (5.2 +/- 0.9 versus 0.6 +/- 0.2; P < 0.005). The IELs were positive for CD45, which is specific for human leukocytes, and they were eliminated by irradiation before the transplantation. Almost all IELs (99.5%) in the xenografts expressed alphabeta T-cell receptor, and 35.8% of IELs expressed alpha(e)beta7 integrin. Bronchial epithelial cells in the xenografts expressed interleukin (IL)-7, stem cell factor, intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1, and human leukocyte antigen-DR (HLA-DR). We conclude that in the SCID-Hu chimera model, human bronchial IELs survive for more than 5 mo, unlike the T cells in the lamina propria, and we suggest that human bronchial IELs may be stimulated by bronchial epithelial cells expressing IL-7, stem cell factor, ICAM-1, and HLA-DR.

Abstract
To study the effect of the space environment on plant growth including the reproductive growth and genetic aberration for a long-term plant life cycle, we have initiated development of a new type of facility for growing plants under microgravity conditions. The facility is constructed with subsystems for controlling environmental elements. In this paper, the concept of the facility design is outlined. Subsystems controlling air temperature, humidity, CO2 concentration, light and air circulation around plants and delivering recycled water and nutrients to roots are the major concerns. Plant experiments for developing the facility and future plant experiments with the completed facility are also overviewed. We intend to install this facility in the Japan Experiment Facility (JEM) boarded on the International Space Station.

Abstract
The present study was designed to examine the possible role of brain C-type natriuretic polypeptide receptor (GC-B) in spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). The level of GC-B mRNA in various regions of the brain in both SHR and WKY was examined in the present study. The GC-B mRNA was unevenly distributed in rat brain, the transcript being expressed predominantly in the hypothalamus and cerebellum but comparatively at low level in the striatum and septum. However, the level in the septum was 3-fold higher in SHR than than in age-matched WKY, while no differences were observed in other regions of the brain. Intracerebroventricular administration of antisense oligonucleotide to GC-B mRNA inhibits the night-time water intake in SHR, but not in WKY. However, the daily food intake was not significantly altered by the injection of antisense oligonucleotide in both strains. These results demonstrate that the brain GC-B mRNA, particularly in septum, is increased in SHR and this increase may be closely related to the regulation of water-drinking behaviour in SHR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of autologous serum application for the treatment of persistent epithelial defect. DESIGN Prospective, clinical, noncomparative case series. PARTICIPANTS A total of 16 eyes were studied. INTERVENTION Autologous serum was prepared from the patients and diluted to 20% by saline. The patients were instructed to use the autologous serum six to ten times a day. The concentration of vitamin A, epidermal growth factor (EGF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) was measured at 1 week and 1 month stored in the refrigerator and 1 month and 3 months in the freezer. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Time to closure of epithelial defect. RESULTS Vitamin A, EGF, and TGF-beta were stable during the 1 month in the refrigerator and 3 months in the freezer. Among 16 persistent epithelial defects, 7 (43.8%) healed within 2 weeks, 3 (18.8%) healed within 1 month, and the remaining 6 (37.5%) did not respond within 1 month. No apparent side effect of autologous serum application was observed. CONCLUSIONS Autologous serum application healed 43.8% of persistent defect within 2 weeks and 62.5% within 1 month.

Abstract
AIM To demonstrate the efficacy of a petrolatum based calcium ointment applied to the lower lid skin in the management of dry eye. METHODS In a controlled double masked study, the effects of water free petrolatum ointment containing calcium carbonate (10% w/w) on tear functional factors and ocular surface vital staining in dry eye patients were observed. Petrolatum without calcium carbonate served as control. Patients were instructed to place ointment to the lower lid skin twice a day. Evaluation of subjective complaints, fluorescein and rose bengal staining patterns, blink rate, tear evaporation and tear break up time (BUT) were performed before and 3 months after treatment. In order to demonstrate the movement of petrolatum from the skin to the tear film, petrolatum containing 1% sodium fluorescein was placed on the lower lid of four healthy volunteers, and the concentration of fluorescein in the tear film was followed up to 6 hours using an anterior fluorometer. RESULTS Subjective symptoms significantly improved in both the calcium group (p=0.001) and control (p=0.012), while only the calcium group demonstrated a significant improvement in fluorescein (p=0.043), rose bengal (p=0.021) scores, and blink rate (p=0.004). Tear evaporation also significantly decreased in both the calcium group (p=0.0004) and control (0.043). BUT did not improve in either group. CONCLUSION Petrolatum based calcium ointment significantly improved symptoms, tear dynamics, and ocular surface staining in dry eye patients. However, some of the therapeutic effects may be due to lipids in the petrolatum vehicle. Petrolatum applied to the lower lid skin is an effective drug delivery system for slowly releasing drugs to the ocular surface.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the efficacy of autologous serum application for the treatment of dry eye in Sjögren's syndrome. METHODS The stability of essential components (EGF, vitamin A, and TGF-beta) in preserved serum were examined following preservation at 4 degrees C and -20 degrees C. In a primary clinical trial, 12 patients with Sjögren's syndrome were treated with autologous serum (diluted to 20% with sterile saline) for 4 weeks, and vital staining of the ocular surface was compared before and after treatment. The effects of serum on mucin (MUC-1) expression were observed in cultured conjunctival epithelial cells in vitro. RESULTS EGF, vitamin A, and TGF-beta were well preserved for up to 1 month in the refrigerator at 4 degrees C and up to 3 months in the freezer at -20 degrees C. Rose bengal and fluorescein scores improved significantly from the initial scores of 5.3 and 5.6 to 1.7 and 2.5 after 4 weeks, respectively. The additive effect of human serum for cultured conjunctival epithelial cells showed significant MUC-1 upregulation on the cell surface. CONCLUSION Autologous serum application is a safe and efficient way to provide essential components to the ocular surface in the treatment of dry eye associated with Sjögren's syndrome.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate our newly developed infrared heater (IRH) and compare it to a broad-spectrum heater (BSH) for warming the eyelids. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten normal subjects were enrolled in this study. All measurements were recorded in a room with temperature 23 degrees C, 40% humidity, and no wind. The IRH is composed of two hard eye patches that have light-emitting diodes (LEDs) emitting near-infrared radiation. We first compared the temperature rises in the cornea, lacrimal gland, and eyelids after warming through closed eyelids with the IRH for 5 and 10 min. Next, we compared warming with the IRH or BSH for 30 min. We then used the IRH for 5 min with the eyes open to confirm its safety. Finally, we determined subjective feeling after warming the eyes. RESULTS Direct comparison of 5 versus 10 min of warming with the IRH showed no significant differences in temperature rises in the upper eyelid (p = 0.09). The IRH caused significantly more heating (p < 0.05) than did the BSH everywhere except the cornea. The temperatures never rose above 37.7 degrees C for either heater during 30 min or with the IRH with the eyes open for 5 min. The subjects' comfort level rose significantly (p < 0.05) after treatment with the IRH. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed the efficacy and safety of warming the eyelids with a newly developed IRH. Only 5 min is necessary to increase ocular temperature and enhance comfort.

Abstract
To clarify the relationship between the clinical characteristics and the effects of high frequency jet ventilation based on the differences in the speed of deterioration in severe asthmatic patients who required intubation and mechanical ventilation, we classified 37 severe asthmatics into two groups (acute onset group: n = 20, intubated within 24 hours; slow onset group: n = 17, intubated over 3 days) and measured the arterial blood gas values, the duration of mechanical ventilation, and the peak inspiratory pressure during synchronized intermittent mechanical ventilation with or without high frequency jet ventilation. The acute onset group showed a significantly higher incidence of cyanosis (75% vs. 41%, p < 0.05), an acute loss of consciousness (90% vs. 53%, p < 0.05), severe mixed acidosis with extreme hypercapnoea (pH 7.11 +/- 0.19, PaCO2 94.1 +/- 10.7 mmHg, BE -8.3 +/- 1.7 mEq/l), and a more elevated peak inspiratory pressure (59.7 +/- 1.8 mmHg vs. 41.1 +/- 1.8 mmHg, p < 0.05) during synchronized intermittent mechanical ventilation at admission, compared with the slow onset group (p < 0.05). The slow onset group required a more prolonged mechanical ventilation than the acute onset group (5.4 +/- 4.0 vs. 3.0 +/- 2.4 days, p < 0.05), in spite of a lower peak inspiratory pressure than that observed in the acute onset group, because of either a large amount of secretion or an infection in the airway. Both the high peak inspiratory pressure and the severe mixed acidosis with markedly elevated hypercapnoea were significantly reduced by the application of high frequency jet ventilation between the intra- and the inter-groups. These findings thus indicated the existence of significant differences in the clinical features and pathogenesis of airway hyperreactivity between these two groups, and the application of high frequency jet ventilation to the status asthmaticus was thus found to be effective.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Changes in the ocular surface of patients with Sjögren syndrome (SS) often are more severe than those in patients with dry eye without SS. This study was conducted to investigate the possible involvement of meibomian gland dysfunction in SS-related ocular surface abnormalities. DESIGN A nonrandomized, prospective, clinical study. PARTICIPANTS Twenty-seven eyes of 27 consecutive patients with SS (SS group) were studied. Twenty-nine eyes of age- and gender-matched non-SS patients with aqueous tear deficiency (non-SS group) were examined as control subjects. INTERVENTION Changes in the ocular surface, tear function, and meibomian gland were examined. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Tear evaporation rate, meibomian gland expression, and meibography were measured. RESULTS Fluorescein and rose bengal staining scores were significantly higher in the SS group than in the non-SS group (P = 0.0001). Evaporation of tears was increased significantly in the SS group compared with the non-SS group. There were no significant differences in the rate of tear production between the SS and non-SS groups. Meibography showed that 11 (57.9%) of 19 eyes in the SS group had gland dropout (i.e., histologic destruction of meibomian glands) in more than half of the tarsus. The incidence was significantly higher than that in the non-SS group (5 [18.5%] of 27 eyes; P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study indicate that destruction of meibomian glands and an increase in tear evaporation often are associated with changes in the ocular surface in patients with SS. Severe ocular surface changes in patients with SS may be attributed, in part, to the meibomian gland dysfunction.

Abstract
The pharmacokinetics of boron was studied in rats by administering a 1 ml oral dose of sodium tetraborate solution to several groups of rats (n=20) at eleven different dose levels ranging from 0 to 0.4 mg/100 g body weight as boron. Twenty-four-hour urine samples were collected after boron administration. After 24 h the average urinary recovery rate for this element was 99.6+/-7.9. The relationship between boron dose and excretion was linear (r=0.999) with a regression coefficient of 0.954. This result suggests that the oral bioavailability (F) of boron was complete. Another group of rats (n=10) was given a single oral injection of 2 ml of sodium tetraborate solution containing 0.4 mg of boron/100 g body wt. The serum decay of boron was followed and found to be monophasic. The data were interpreted according to a one-compartment open model. The appropriate pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated as follows: absorption half-life, t1/2a=0.608+/-0.432 h; elimination half-life, t1/2=4.64+/-1.19 h; volume of distribution, Vd = 142.0+/-30.2 ml/100 g body wt.; total clearance, Ctot=0.359+/-0.0285 ml/min per 100 g body wt. The maximum boron concentration in serum after administration (Cmax) was 2.13+/-0.270 mg/l, and the time needed to reach this maximum concentration (Tmax) was 1.76+/-0.887 h. Our results suggest that orally administered boric acid is rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract into the blood stream. Boric acid in the intravascular space does not have a strong affinity to serum proteins, and rapidly diffuses to the extravascular space in proportion to blood flow without massive accumulation or binding in tissues. The main route of boron excretion from the body is via glomerular filtration. It may be inferred that there is partial tubular resorption at low plasma levels. The animal model is proposed as a useful tool to approach the problem of environmental or industrial exposure to boron or in cases of accidental acute boron intoxication.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether the viscosity of eyedrops affects the distribution of the precorneal tear film. METHODS Using a differential pachymetry map, we obtained tear film thickness in healthy volunteers before and after the instillation of nonviscous, aqueous artificial tears and a 0.3% sodium hyaluronate solution. RESULTS The instillation of aqueous artificial tears disclosed a significant (P < .05) thickening of the superior corneal tear film compared with the inferior corneal tear film. The increase in thickness by 0.3% sodium hyaluronate solution was uniform, with no differences between the superior and inferior cornea. CONCLUSIONS Aqueous artificial tears caused an uneven thickening of the precorneal tear film, with most of the thickening observed at the superior cornea. Lower sections of the cornea may benefit less from the instillation of nonviscous solutions.
