Abstract
Background: drugs for Alzheimer's disease (AD) fail to exhibit efficacy in clinical trials for a number of reasons, a major one being blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. Meanwhile, the increasing incidence of this disease emphasizes the need for effective therapeutics. Herein, we discuss novel nanoplatform technologies developed for the effective delivery of AD drugs by traversing the BBB. Main text: the interfacial and surface chemistry of nanomaterials is utilized in several industries, including pharmaceutical, and has drawn considerable attention in the field of nanotechnology. Various reports have suggested the potential of nanotechnology for AD treatment, describing unique drug carriers that improve drug stability and solubility while maintaining therapeutic dosages. These nanotechnologies are harnessed for the transport of drugs across the BBB, with or without surface modifications. We also discuss the transfer of drugs via the nose-to-brain pathway, as intranasal delivery enables direct drug distribution in the brain. In addition, nanomaterial modifications that prolong drug delivery and improve safety following intranasal administration are addressed. Conclusion: although several studies have yielded promising results, limited efforts have been undertaken to translate research findings into clinical contexts. Nevertheless, nanomaterials hold considerable potential for the development of novel effective therapeutic solutions against AD.

Abstract
Lung cancer and Mycobacterium avium complex infection are lung diseases associated with high incidence and mortality rates. Most conventional anticancer drugs and antibiotics have certain limitations, including high drug resistance rates and adverse effects. Herein, we aimed to synthesize mannose surface-modified solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) loaded with curcumin (Man-CUR SLN) for the effective treatment of lung disease. The synthesized Man-CUR SLNs were analyzed using various instrumental techniques for structural and physicochemical characterization. Loading curcumin into SLNs improved the encapsulation efficiency and drug release capacity, as demonstrated by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. Furthermore, we characterized the anticancer effect of curcumin using the A549 lung cancer cell line. Cells treated with Man-CUR SLN exhibited an increased cellular uptake and cytotoxicity. Moreover, treatment with free CUR could more effectively reduce cancer migration than treatment with Man-CUR SLNs. Similarly, free curcumin elicited a stronger apoptosis-inducing effect than that of Man-CUR SLNs, as demonstrated by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR analysis. Finally, we examined the antibacterial effects of free curcumin and Man-CUR SLNs against Mycobacterium intracellulare (M.i.) and M.i.-infected macrophages, revealing that Man-CUR SLNs exerted the strongest antibacterial effect. Collectively, these findings indicate that mannose-receptor-targeted curcumin delivery using lipid nanoparticles could be effective in treating lung diseases. Accordingly, this drug delivery system can be used to target a variety of cancers and immune cells.

Abstract
The escalating utilization of plastics in daily life has resulted in pervasive environmental pollution and consequent health hazards. The challenge of detecting and capturing microplastics, which are imperceptible to the naked eye, is exacerbated by their diminutive size, hydrophobic surface properties, and capacity to absorb organic compounds. This study focuses on the application of peptides, constituted of specific amino acid sequences, and microneedles for the rapid and selective identification of microplastics. Peptides, due to their smaller size and greater environmental stability compared with antibodies, emerge as a potent solution to overcome the limitations inherent in existing detection methodologies. To immobilize peptides onto microneedles, this study employed microneedles embedded with gold nanorods, augmenting them with sulfhydryl (SH) groups at the peptides' termini. The sensor developed through this methodology exhibited efficient peptide binding to the microneedle tips, thereby facilitating the capture of microplastics. Raman spectroscopy was employed for the detection of microplastics, with the results demonstrating successful attachment to the microneedles. This novel approach not only facilitates localized analysis but also presents a viable strategy for the detection of microplastics across diverse environmental settings.

Abstract
In the contemporary context, executing light-oxidant- and reductant-driven reactions in solution-phase processes remains challenging mainly due to the lack of general tools for understanding the reactive potential of nano-functional catalysts. In this study, dual-active nanometals (Au and Cu doped with Au) capped within soy lecithin (SL), were developed and characterized, combining flexibility with the catalytic advantages and stability of liquid-phase catalysts. The as-synthesized SL-Au (LG) and SL-Au-Cu (LGC) catalysts were efficiently degraded rhodamine B (RB, 100%) in the presence of H2O2 under light irradiation (350 W lamp) at wide pH range (3-7) within 4.5 h and p-nitrophenol (p-NP, >90% degradation at pH 7) in the presence of NaBH4 under normal stirring with slower kinetics (∼72 h). RB degradation followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model with a higher r2, and p-NP degradation followed first-order kinetics. The active sites embedded within the structural order of SL arrangement displayed elevated catalytic activity, which was further enhanced by the movement of intermediate/excited states and charged elements within the metal suspended in the phospholipid (LG and LGC). The self-regulating tunability of the physicochemical characteristics of these catalysts provides a convenient and generalizable platform for the transformation of modern dual-active (redox) catalysts into dynamic homogeneous equivalents.

Abstract
We search for energetic electron recoil signals induced by boosted dark matter (BDM) from the galactic center using the COSINE-100 array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The signal would be an excess of events with energies above 4 MeV over the well-understood background. Because no excess of events are observed in a 97.7 kg·yr exposure, we set limits on BDM interactions under a variety of hypotheses. Notably, we explored the dark photon parameter space, leading to competitive limits compared to direct dark photon search experiments, particularly for dark photon masses below 4 MeV and considering the invisible decay mode. Furthermore, by comparing our results with a previous BDM search conducted by the Super-Kamionkande experiment, we found that the COSINE-100 detector has advantages in searching for low-mass dark matter. This analysis demonstrates the potential of the COSINE-100 detector to search for MeV electron recoil signals produced by the dark sector particle interactions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although interest in qualitative olfactory dysfunction (OD), including parosmia and phantosmia, has been increasing since the COVID-19 pandemic, little is known about the clinical characteristics and associated factors of qualitative OD. METHODS Adult patients with subjective smell disturbance who underwent both the olfactory questionnaire and psychophysical olfactory function test were retrospectively enrolled. Demographic and clinical characteristics were analysed according to the presence or absence of parosmia or phantosmia. RESULTS Among a total of 753 patients with self-reported OD, 60 (8%) and 167 (22.2%) patients reported parosmia and phantosmia, respectively. Younger age and female sex were related to both parosmia and phantosmia. The frequency of parosmia was significantly higher in patients with post-viral OD (17.9%) than in patients with the sinonasal disease (5.5%), whereas that of phantosmia was not different according to aetiologies of OD. Patients with COVID-19 had significantly younger ages and higher TDI scores than those with other viral infections. Remarkably, patients with parosmia or phantosmia had significantly higher TDI scores than those without but experienced more disruption in daily life. In the multivariate analysis, younger age and higher TDI score were identified as independent factors associated with both parosmia and phantosmia, while the viral infection was associated with parosmia but not with phantosmia. CONCLUSIONS Patients with OD who have parosmia or phantosmia have higher odour sensitivity than those who do not, but experience more deterioration in the quality of life. Viral infection is a risk factor for parosmia but not for phantosmia.

Abstract
Recently, several methods have been used for cancer treatment. Among them, chemotherapy is generally used, but general anticancer drugs may affect normal cells and tissues, causing various side effects. To reduce the side effects and increase the efficacy of anticancer drugs, a folate-based liquid-metal drug nanodelivery system was used to target the folate receptor, which is highly expressed in cancer cells. A phospholipid-based surface coating was formed on the surface of liquid-metal nanoparticles to increase their stability, and doxorubicin was loaded as a drug delivery system. Folate on the lipid shell surface increased the efficiency of targeting cancer cells. The photothermal properties of liquid metal were confirmed by near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. After treating cancerous and normal cells with liquid-metal particles and NIR irradiation, the particles were specifically bound to cancer cells for drug uptake, confirming photothermal therapy as a drug delivery system that is expected to induce cancer cell death through comprehensive effects such as vascular embolization in addition to targeting cancer cells.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common malignant pediatric brain tumor and the development of leptomeningeal dissemination (LM seeding) through the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation is a major cause of treatment failure. We have previously established the MB LM seeding mouse model. In this study, we aimed to determine molecules that can target seeding (metastatic) cells by analyzing their specific genetic and functional characteristics.
Methods: Seeding and non-seeding cells were isolated and cultured, respectively, and microarray analysis was carried out. Proliferation and wound-healing assays were performed through the HCS system, and viability, migration and adhesion assays were accomplished. In addition, the therapeutic effect of the selected inhibitor was analyzed by region of interest (ROI) analysis of bioluminescence in vivo.
Results: The gene expression and functional characteristics of the successfully obtained seed cells and non-seed cells were compared and analyzed. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) analysis indicated that heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) was in the highest rank in seeding cells, and pathway enrichment analysis revealed that the metabolism was the main pathway enriched in seeding cells. Proliferation of seeding cells was slower than that of non-seeding cells, but there was no significant difference in viability. Notably, the wound-healing of seeding cells was delayed, but the adhesion ability on collagen was higher. Among the six HSP70 inhibitors, VER155008 was efficiently sensitive to seeding cells, and suppression of expression of MRP proteins along with HSP70 was also confirmed. In addition, it was observed that the treatment of VER155008 reduced seeding through the spinal cord in vivo.
Conclusion: Our study suggests that VER15008 can be a promising treatment option, targeting LM seeding of MB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Isolating patients infected or colonized with vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in a private room or cohort room to prevent hospital transmission is controversial. AIM To evaluate the effect of a relaxed isolation policy for VRE-infected or colonized patients on healthcare-associated (HA) VRE bacteraemia in an acute care hospital with a predominantly shared-room setting. METHODS The incidence of HA VRE bacteraemia was compared during a private isolation era (October 2014-September 2017), a cohort isolation era (October 2017-June 2020), and a no isolation era (July 2020-June 2022). Using Poisson regression modelling, an interrupted time-series analysis was conducted to analyse level changes and trends in incidences of HA VRE bacteraemia for each era. FINDINGS The proportion of VRE-infected or -colonized patients staying in shared rooms increased from 18.3% in the private isolation era to 82.6% in the no isolation era (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the incidences of HA VRE bacteraemia between the private isolation era and the cohort isolation era (relative risk: 1.01; 95% confidence interval: 0.52-1.98; P = 0.977) or between the cohort isolation era and the no isolation era (0.99; 0.77-1.26; P = 0.903). In addition, there was no significant slope increase in the incidence of HA VRE bacteraemia between any of the eras. CONCLUSION In a hospital with predominantly shared rooms, the relaxation of isolation policy did not result in increased HA VRE bacteraemia, when other infection control measures were maintained.

Abstract
Five-FU is a potent chemotherapeutic agent for suppressing endothelial cell growth. The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of local peritumor injection of 5-FU for patients with advanced gastric cancer (AGC) for the prevention of anemia. Between January 2020 and January 2022, patients aged 18 years or older with AGC and moderate anemia were included. A total of 200 mg of 5-FU was injected per session at ten points of the lesion (20 mg at each point) every 7 days for 4 to 12 weeks. Patients received a blood test for toxicity at every cycle. From one of these patients, endoscopic biopsy specimens were taken from gastric cancer before and after injecting 5-FU for immunostaining. A total of five AGC patients participated in this study. For most patients, hemoglobin levels were maintained without transfusions during 5-FU injection, and expression levels of thrombospondin-1 was increased after injection compared to those before injection. Blood test results during 5-FU injection showed no significant change in serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase/glutamic pyruvic transaminase, total bilirubin, or creatinine level. The results of this study showed the possibility of local peritumor 5-FU injection as a treatment for relieving anemia of patients with gastric cancer.

Abstract
Aedes albopictus poses a public health risk in tropical countries and temperate countries in recent decades due to its capability to transmit various human arboviruses including dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Vector control is the key for preventing transmission of these pathogenic viruses. Improving the effectiveness of currently utilized collection methods, such as ovitraps, is important for best species abundance monitoring, assessment of the threat of arbovirus transmission, and optimizing control activities. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the potential use of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) waste as an infusion-baited ovitrap for Aedes collection. The performance of overnight tap water, grass hay infusion and LAB waste infusion were compared for their ability in attracting gravid female Ae. albopictus. In this study, the LAB waste infusion was substantially more alluring to Ae. albopictus mosquitoes than the two controls grass hay infusion and tap water.

Abstract

Aim
Women who inevitably underwent surgical hysterectomy before natural menopause may have an earlier increase in hematocrit and storage iron than women who continue menstruation, thereby increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) early. We aimed to evaluate the association of women with hysterectomy vs. without hysterectomy before their 50s with the risk of incident CVD.
Methods
This was a retrospective-cohort study, 135,575 women aged 40 to 50 years in 2011–2014 were extracted from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service data and after propensity score matching, 55,539 pairs were included in hysterectomy and non-hysterectomy group respectively. The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and coronary artery revascularization.
Results
After adjustment for confounding factors, hysterectomy group had an increased risk of MACCE compared with non-hysterectomy group (hazard ratio [HR], 1.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09–1.44). Regarding individual outcomes, cardiovascular death, MI, and coronary revascularization were comparable between the groups, whereas, the risk of stroke was significantly higher in hysterectomy group than non-hysterectomy group (HR, 1.31; 95% CI, 1.12–1.53). Even after excluding women who underwent oophorectomy, hysterectomy group had a higher risk of MACCE than non-hysterectomy group (HR, 1.24; 95% CI 1.06–1.44).
Conclusions
Early surgical menopause due to hysterectomy, not hormonal menopause, was associated with an increased risk for a composite of CVD, especially stroke. This suggest that the role of “uterus” as well as sex hormones may be important for the sharp increase in the risk of CVD in women after menopause.

Abstract
Digital health-based lifestyle interventions (e.g., mobile applications, short messaging service, wearable devices, social media, and interactive websites) are widely used to manage metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study aimed to confirm the utility of self-care for prevention or management of MetS. We recruited 106 participants with one or more MetS risk factors from December 2019 to September 2020. Participants were provided five healthcare devices and applications. Characteristics were compared at baseline and follow-up to examine changes in risk factors, engagement, persistence, and physical activity (analyzed through device use frequency and lifestyle interventions performed). Participants with 1-2 MetS risk factors showed statistically significant reductions in waist circumference (WC) and blood pressure (BP). Participants with ≥3 MetS risk factors showed statistically significant reductions in risk factors including weight, body mass index, WC, BP, and fasting blood sugar (FBS). The prevention and improvement groups used more healthcare devices than the other groups. Smartwatch was the most frequently used device (5 times/week), and physical activity logged more than 7000 steps/week. WC, BP, and FBS of the improvement group were reduced by more than 40%. Based on engagement, persistence, and physical activity, digital health-based lifestyle interventions could be helpful for MetS prevention and management.

Abstract
Herein, titanium (IV) oxide (TiO2) loaded into montmorillonite (MK10) and sand is presented as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the degradation of 1,4-dichlorobenzene (DCB) as a model organic pollutant in the aqueous phase. The catalyst was synthesized by incorporating titanium isopropoxide as a precursor into MK10 through a simple solvent impregnation method, followed by direct calcination. The same protocol was applied to a clean quartz matrix. The resulting catalysts were characterized in detail using a variety of techniques. The TiO2 deposited MK10 and sand exhibited photochemical removal of DCB (>99% of 100 mg L-1) from the aqueous phase; this process followed a pseudo second-order kinetic model values in the range of Qe:111-113 mg g-1 and K2: 4-5 × 10-4 g mg-1 min-1. The kinetic plots indicate that after 30 min, the intermediates start to decrease and complete degradation occurs in 180 min. The modified materials showed fast DCB degradation kinetics under photochemical reaction conditions and adsorption under dark reaction conditions. The unmodified matrix adsorbed 99.12-99.88% of the DCB under both dark and light reaction conditions. These photocatalysts are stable, reusable, and least amount of titanium leaching. The simple two step synthesis, and high photocatalytic performance (with 10 mg of the catalyst without any oxidants) of our catalysts can be promising in environmental applications to treat similar organic pollutants in wastewater. These catalysts have enhanced activity and durability for environmental catalytic pollutant degradation reactions and can provide insights beyond single metal oxide catalysts for heterogeneous catalysis at diverse operating conditions.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS The transformation from reverse micelles to reverse vesicles is influenced by electrostatic interactions between lecithin headgroups and inorganic salts. The electrostatic interactions are expected to influence molecular geometry of lecithin, resulting in a reduction in critical packing parameter (p). Hence, it should be possible to drive structural transitions of reverse self-assembled structures by addition of inorganic salts to lecithin solutions. EXPERIMENTS Structural transitions of reverse micelles and reverse vesicles were formulated including lecithin and inorganic salts as a function of concentration in cyclohexane. A systematic study was performed using inorganic salts with the different valences of the cations such as Li+, Ca2+, and La3+. To probe the nanodomain structures from the lecithin/salt mixtures, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used. FINDINGS Adding salts to lecithin solutions induced the systematic transformation of reverse self-assembled structures from reverse spherical micelles to reverse cylindrical micelles and finally to reverse vesicles. The transformation was also correlated with interactions between lecithin headgroups and salts, that is, Li+ < Ca2+ < La3+. In addition, a water-soluble dye such as rhodamine B (RB) can be readily encapsulated into reverse micelles and vesicles, indicating that they are potentially useful for controlled solute delivery.

Abstract
The role of sodium caprate (C10) in enhancing drug absorption is well established; however, little information is available on its role as an anticancer drug. This study aimed to evaluate the anticancer effect of C10 in gastric cancer cells. The mechanism of cytotoxicity of C10 was evaluated by western blotting following treatment of the gastric cancer cells with various concentrations of C10. C10 cytotoxicity was measured via MTS (3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H tetrazolium), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), cAMP, and ATP assays. Gastric cancer cells were observed by electron microscopy following treatment with C10. Then, xenograft mice that were inoculated with gastric cancer cells were treated with C10 for 4 weeks, after which the changes in tumor size were measured. C10 triggered apoptosis in the gastric cancer cells through the mitochondrial pathway at concentrations of more than 0.2 mM. However, 15 mM of C10 induced necrosis in gastric cancer cells by causing cellular swelling and the formation of holes in the cell membrane. Levels of cAMP and ATP decreased significantly following exposure to 15 mM C10 for 1 h. Additionally, the size of the xenograft tumors was significantly reduced by 24% after 4 weeks of C10 treatment (p < 0.05). This study indicates that C10 induces apoptosis and necrosis in a concentration-dependent manner and has clear anticancer effects on gastric cancer cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, the antidiabetic efficacy of Protaetia brevitarsis in alloxan-treated pancreatic islets and db/db mice was investigated. P. brevitarsis was tested for alloxan-mediated cytotoxicity and nitric oxide production in mice pancreatic islets. MATERIALS AND METHODS The anti-diabetic effect of P. brevitarsis was also evaluated in db/db mice after 4 weeks of administration. Biochemical analysis, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and pancreatic histological analysis were performed. RESULTS P. brevitarsis displayed hypoglycemic activity in alloxan-treated mice pancreatic islets. Our results showed that P. brevitarsis protects pancreatic islets from cytotoxicity. Moreover, daily oral supplementation with P. brevitarsis for 4 weeks reduced plasma glucose levels without affecting body weight and food intake, elevated glucose tolerance in OGTT, improved blood lipid parameters, inhibited fat accumulation, and restored islet structure of db/db mice. CONCLUSIONS The present study provided evidence for the anti‑diabetic effect of P. brevitarsis in alloxan-treated pancreatic islets and db/db mice. These results suggest that P. brevitarsis may be used as an adjunctive anti-diabetic agent or as a functional food.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the major pathogens responsible for healthcare-associated infections, especially in intensive care units (ICUs). AIM To evaluate the effect of room privatization in an ICU on the acquisition of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB). METHODS Between March and August 2017, a medical ICU was renovated from a multibed bay room to single rooms. Acquisition of CRAB was compared between patients admitted to the ICU over 18 months pre-renovation (September 2015 to February 2017) and post-renovation (September 2017 to February 2019). A Cox proportional hazard model was used with adjustment for demographics and comorbidities. FINDINGS Of the 901 patients, who contributed 8,276 patient-days, 95 (10.5%) acquired CRAB during their ICU stay. The CRAB acquisition rate was significantly higher during the pre-renovation period (1.87 per 100 patient-days) than during the post-renovation period (0.39 per 100 patient-days) (P < 0.001). In the multivariable Cox regression model, CRAB acquisition was significantly associated with the presence of a feeding tube (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 6.08; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.46-15.06; P < 0.001), continuous renal replacement therapy (aHR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.09-2.53; P = 0.019) and admission after renovation of the ICU to single rooms (aHR, 0.23; 95% CI, 0.12-0.41; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Renovation of ICUs to single rooms is an efficient strategy to prevent transmission of multidrug-resistant organisms and hospital-acquired infections.

Abstract
The recommended test guidelines for Zika virus (ZIKV) include using both molecular and serological tools. While the molecular tools are useful for detecting acute infection, the serological tools are useful for the detection of previous infections. Nevertheless, detection of ZIKV-specific antibodies remains a challenge due to the high cross-reactivity between ZIKV and other flaviviruses such as dengue virus (DENV) and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). The objective of this study is to evaluate the commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of ZIKV IgG. In this study, we evaluated 6 commercially available anti-ZIKV IgG ELISA kits. Pre-characterized serum panels consisting of 70 sera were selected for the evaluation. The diagnostic accuracy of each ELISA kits was determined and compared to the gold standard, Foci Reduction Neutralization Test (FRNT). The present study established that the performance of the NS1-based anti-ZIKV IgG ELISA kit was superior to that which uses of the E protein as antigen. Overall, commercial ZIKV IgG ELISA showed varying test performances, with some achieving moderate to high test sensitivities and specificities. When compared against the FRNT, the test sensitivities ranged from 7.1% to 78.6%, whereas, the test specificities ranged from 40.0% to 100%. Limitation to the study includes the cross reactivity between flavivirus and specificity of the kit in addressing the cross reactivity.

Abstract
In this work, we present three-dimensional flower-like nickel-cobalt oxide (F-NCO) nanosheets developed in a facile, eco-friendly hydrothermal route to apply as photocatalysts for food colorant Allura Red AC dye removal under light illumination. Using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, it was found that the F-NCO nanosheets displayed a surface area of ∼53.65 m2/g and a Barrett-Joyner-Halenda pore size of ∼14 nm, which was also confirmed by the calculated crystallite size of ∼15 nm using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. From Williamson-Hall analysis of XRD spectra, F-NCO nanosheets revealed a crystal-lattice strain of ∼3.42 × 10-3 and a dislocation density of ∼4.397 × 1015 lines/m2 in the crystal structure. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that F-NCO nanosheets accumulated to form flower-like nanostructures of <100 nm length with a d-spacing of ∼2.6 Å, which is attributed to the (311) crystallographic plane (α = γ = β = 90°, a = b = c = 8.110 Å, JCPDS No. 00-020-0781) of the cubic phase. The F-NCO nanosheets exhibited an excellent photocatalytic efficiency of ∼94.75% in ∼10 min with sodium borohydride under UV light. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood model determined pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics of dye degradation using the ln[AtA0]versus time plot. The kinetic study produced a first-order rate constant (k) of ∼0.219 min-1, resulting in ∼3.16 min half-life (t1/2) for the F-NCO-catalyzed degradation reaction. Thus outstanding photocatalytic performance of F-NCO nanosheets would display their huge potential for organic-pollutant removal from water with exceptional recyclability for wide research applications in the future.

Abstract
The radioactive aerosol generated by the Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) decommissioning process can be inhaled by workers and deposited inside the human body, resulting in internal exposure. Because internal exposure, unlike external exposure, is difficult to measure directly, it is all the more necessary to assess the dose workers receive as a result of internal exposure. Precise assessment of the internal exposure necessitates actual measurements in the work environment such as the workers' respiration rate, kind of nuclide and amount of captured nuclide. However, in the event of difficulties in securing these measurements, the internal exposure dose can be estimated based upon the recommended values by the ICRP (International Commission on Radiological Protection) such as the intake fraction and particle size. In this study, 5 μm was selected as the particle size as recommended by the ICRP, and both heavy and light respiratory rates were used in the calculation. With respect to the nuclides contained in the radioactive aerosol and their concentrations, the data captured for the aerosol in the melting facility on the Kozloduy NPP premises in Bulgaria were applied to estimate workers' internal exposure. As a result, each worker was found not to have received more than 20 mSv/yr, which is the maximum annual permissible dose for workers.

Abstract
Xanthogranulomatous inflammation is an uncommon form of chronic inflammatory process. Only a few isolated case reports of xanthogranulomatous appendicitis (XA) have been published. XA has nonspecific imaging findings and cannot be reliably differentiated on imaging from locally advanced malignancy. XA however follows a benign course and can potentially be treated with surgical resection.

Abstract
Ticks are vectors of bacteria, protozoa and viruses capable of causing serious and life threatening diseases in humans and animals. Disease transmission occurs through the transfer of pathogen from tick bites to susceptible humans or animals. Most commonly known tick-borne pathogens are obligate intracellular microorganisms but little is known on the prevalence of culturable pathogenic bacteria from ticks capable of growth on artificial nutrient media. One hundred and forty seven ticks originating from dairy cattle, goats and rodents were collected from nine selected sites in Peninsular Malaysia. The culture of surfacesterilized tick homogenates revealed the isolation of various pathogenic bacteria including, Staphylococcus sp., Corynebacterium sp., Rothia sp., Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Bacillus sp. and its derived genera. These pathogens are among those that affect humans and animals. Findings from this study suggest that in addition to the regular intracellular pathogens, ticks could also harbor extracellular pathogenic bacteria. Further studies, hence, would be needed to determine if these extracellular pathogens could contribute to human or animal infection.

Abstract
In this study, we describe a novel function of TNNC1 (Troponin C1, Slow Skeletal and Cardiac Type), a component of actin-bound troponin, as a tumor suppressor of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). First, the expression of TNNC1 was strongly down-regulated in cancer tissues compared to matched normal lung tissues, and down-regulation of TNNC1 was shown to be strongly correlated with increased mortality among LUAD patients. Interestingly, TNNC1 expression was enhanced by suppression of KRAS, and ectopic expression of TNNC1 in turn inhibited KRASG12D-mediated anchorage independent growth of NIH3T3 cells. Consistently, activation of KRAS pathway in LUAD patients was shown to be strongly correlated with down-regulation of TNNC1. In addition, ectopic expression of TNNC1 inhibited colony formation of multiple LUAD cell lines and induced DNA damage, cell cycle arrest and ultimately apoptosis. We further examined potential correlations between expression levels of TNNC1 and various clinical parameters and found that low-level expression is significantly associated with invasiveness of the tumor. Indeed, RNA interference-mediated down-regulation of TNNC1 led to significant enhancement of invasiveness in vitro. Collectively, our data indicate that TNNC1 has a novel function as a tumor suppressor and is targeted for down-regulation by KRAS pathway during the carcinogenesis of LUAD.

Abstract
Biaxial p-SnO/n-ZnO heterostructured nanowires (average length of 10 μm) were grown onto a glass substrate by thermal evaporation in vacuum. These nanowires had spherical ball tips, and the size of the SnO part increased gradually from the top to the bottom of the nanowire, but the corresponding size of ZnO varied slightly. The Sn-Zn alloy formed in the tips resulted in determined as the catalyst of the growth of the ZnO nanowires. The growth process of the p-SnO/n-ZnO biaxial nanowires is discussed based on vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) based on the subsequent growth process: the VLS catalytic growth of the ZnO nanowire and subsequent epitaxial SnO growth on the sidewall of the pregrown ZnO nanowire. An epitaxial relationship, (001)SnO//(110)ZnO and [110]SnO//[002]ZnO, was observed in the biaxial p-SnO/n-ZnO heterostructured nanowires. The gas-sensing properties of the as-synthesized p-SnO/n-ZnO nanowires were investigated. The results show that the device exhibit a good performance to the ppb-level NO2 at room temperature (25 °C) without light illumination. The detection limit of the p-SnO/n-ZnO sensor to NO2 is 50 ppb. Moreover, the NO2-sensing properties of the p-SnO/n-ZnO device were investigated under various relative humidity. Finally, the NO2-sensing mechanism of the p-SnO/n-ZnO nanowires was proposed and discussed.

Abstract
Herein, the effects of various alcohols on lecithin/CaCl2 organogels are investigated. Mixtures of lecithin and CaCl2 form reverse cylindrical micelles, resulting in optically transparent organogels. The addition of various alcohols to a mixture of lecithin and CaCl2 induces a decrease in viscosity through which reverse cylindrical micelles are transformed into spherical micelles (or short cylindrical micelles). Long-hydrocarbon-chain alcohols decrease the viscosity of lecithin/CaCl2 mixtures more efficiently. Hydrogen bonding and hydrocarbon chain interactions between lecithin and alcohol play important roles in the morphological transition. More importantly, isothermal titration calorimetry was conducted to obtain thermodynamic variables such as the enthalpy, equilibrium constant, Gibbs free energy, entropy, and stoichiometry of the associated molecules observed in the transition. It was found that the transition is an entropically driven process, in which the endothermic and exothermic behaviors were observed depending on the hydrocarbon chain length in the alcohol. In addition, the enthalpy for the association of the alcohol with lecithin showed a linear relationship depending on the hydrocarbon chain length, in which the magnitude of hydrogen bonding and hydrocarbon chain interactions was obtained quantitatively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study reporting the thermodynamic properties of the morphological transition observed in a reverse self-assembly process.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the diagnostic performance of proton density fat fraction (PDFF) and simultaneous R2* for focal vertebral bone marrow lesion (VBML) assessment, compared with the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and ninety-two spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations performed in 126 patients with focal VBMLs from March 2016 to November 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. The lesions were divided into metastases and benign VBMLs. The protocol consisted of routine morphological MRI sequences, followed by complex-based chemical shift imaging (CSE)-MRI and diffusion-weighted (DW)-MRI with a 1.5 T system. PDFF, R2*, and the ADC values were compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was carried out to assess the diagnostic performance for differentiating metastases from focal benign VBMLs. RESULTS PDFF, R2*, and mean ADC values in metastases were significantly lower than those in benign VBMLs (p<0.05). The PDFF (area under the curve [AUC]= 0.968; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.932-0.988) showed a significantly larger AUC compared with R2* (AUC=0.670; 95% CI=0.599-0.736) and ADC (AUC=0.801; 95% CI=0.738-0.855). The optimal cut-off value of the PDFF for predicting metastases was 9%; this threshold corresponded to a sensitivity of 96.67%, specificity of 90.28%, and accuracy of 94.27%. CONCLUSION PDFF is significantly more accurate than ADC and R2* for differentiating focal benign VMBLs from metastases.

Abstract
Background Chronic inflammation can lower the seizure threshold and have influence on epileptogenesis. The components of red ginseng (RG) have anti-inflammatory effects. The abundance of peripherally derived immune cells in resected epileptic tissue suggests that the immune system is a potential target for anti-epileptogenic therapies. The present study used continuous electroencephalography (EEG) to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of RG in intrahippocampal kainic acid (IHKA) animal model of temporal lobe epilepsy. Methods Prolonged status epilepticus (SE) was induced in 7-week-old C57BL/6J mice via stereotaxic injection of kainic acid (KA, 150 nL; 1 mg/mL) into the right CA3/dorsal hippocampus. The animals were implanted electrodes and monitored for spontaneous seizures. Following the IHKA injections, one group received treatments of RG (250 mg/kg/day) for 4 weeks (RG group, n=7) while another group received valproic acid (VPA, 30 mg/kg/day) (VPA group, n=7). Laboratory findings and pathological results were assessed at D29 and continuous (24 h/week) EEG monitoring was used to evaluate high-voltage sharp waves on D7, D14, D21, and D28. Results At D29, there were no differences between the groups in liver function test but RG group had higher blood urea nitrogen levels. Immunohistochemistry analyses revealed that RG reduced the infiltration of immune cells into the brain and EEG analyses showed that it had anticonvulsant effects. Conclusion Repeated treatments with RG after IHKA-induced SE decreased immune cell infiltration into the brain and resulted in a marked decrease in electrographic seizures. RG had anticonvulsant effects that were similar to those of VPA without serious side effects.

Although DM is a well-known predictor of mortality in AHF, the impacts of admission hyperglycemia on clinical outcomes in non-DM patients with AHF have been poorly studied. The aim of this study, therefore, was to compare the impact of admission hyperglycemia on long-term clinical outcomes in AHF patients with or without DM.
Methods
Among 5,625 AHF patients enrolled in a nationwide registry, a total of 5,541 patients were enrolled and divided into 2 groups; DM group (n=2,125, 70.4±11.4 years) vs. non-DM group (n=3,416, 67.3±16.0 years). Each group were further divided into 2 groups according to the presence of admission hyperglycemia (admission serum glucose level >200mg/dl); admission hyperglycemia (n=248) and no hyperglycemia (n=3,168) in non-DM; admission hyperglycemia (n=799) and no hyperglycemia (n=1,326) in DM. All-cause death and hospitalization due to HF (HHF) during 1-year follow-up were compared.
Results
Death was developed in 1,220 patients (22.2%) including 269 inhospital deaths (4.9%) during 1-year of follow-up. Death rate were significantly higher in DM than in non-DM group (24.8% vs 20.5%, p<0.001), however there was no difference in inhospital death (5.1% vs 4.7%, p=0.534). Both inhospital death (7.6% vs. 4.2%, p<0.001) and 1-year death (26.2% vs. 21.3%, p=0.001) were more frequent in AHF patients with hyperglycemia. On Kaplan-Meier survival curve analysis, however, admission hyperglycemia was associated with significantly higher death (p<0.001 by log-rank test) and rehospitalization (p=0.006 by log-rank test) in non-DM group, but not in DM group. In non-DM group, admission hyperglycemia was an independent predictor of 1-year mortality (HR 1.46, 95% CI 1.10–1.93, p=0.009).
Conclusion
DM was a significant predictor of long-term mortality in patients with AHF. Admission hyperglycemia was associated with both higher inhospital and 1-year mortality. The present study also demonstrated that admission hyperglycemia is an independent predictor of mortality in non-DM patients with AHF, but not in DM patients. In addition to the presence of DM, admission hyperglycemia would be a useful marker in the risk stratification of AHF, especially in non-DM patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study estimated county-level human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination initiation rates in Alabama and determined whether disparities existed between counties in the Mississippi Delta region (MDR) and Appalachian region (AR). STUDY DESIGN This study used an observational cross-sectional design. METHODS We used small area estimation methodology to estimate rates of medical provider-verified HPV vaccine initiation among school-age children in Alabama. Data for the study were retrieved from the 2015 National Immunization Survey (n = 22,205) and the US Census Bureau. RESULTS The predictive model results showed that older age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.22, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.16, 1.29) was positively associated with vaccination initiation and black (OR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.71, 0.87), white (OR = 0.56, 95% CI = 0.52, 0.60), and 'other' race/ethnicities (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.70, 0.86), compared with Hispanics, and was negatively associated with vaccination initiation. The median (x̃)-modeled HPV vaccination initiation rate for all Alabama counties was 50.83% (interquartile range = 5.00%). Modeled HPV vaccination initiation rates were lowest in AR counties (x̃ = 49.81%), followed by counties not in the AR or MDR (x̃ = 53.26%) and MDR counties (x̃ = 54.90%). CONCLUSIONS Culturally sensitive school-based HPV vaccine delivery programs are needed for children living in AR counties in Alabama.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abdominal wall hernias are common in patients with ascites. Elective surgical repair is recommended for the treatment of abdominal wall hernias. However, surgical hernia repair in cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites is controversial. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the outcomes of elective surgical hernia repair in patients with liver cirrhosis with and without refractory ascites. METHOD From January 2005 to June 2018, we retrospectively reviewed the records of consecutive patients with liver cirrhosis who underwent a surgical hernia repair. RESULTS This study included 107 patients; 31 patients (29.0%) had refractory ascites. Preoperatively, cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites had a higher median model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score (13.0 vs 11.0, P = 0.001) than those without refractory ascites. The 30-day mortality rate (3.2% vs 0%, P = 0.64) and the risk of recurrence (hazard ratio 0.410; 95% CI 0.050-3.220; P = 0.39) did not differ significantly between cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites and cirrhotic patients without refractory ascites. Among cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites, albumin (P = 0.23), bilirubin (P = 0.37), creatinine (P = 0.97), and sodium levels (P = 0.35) did not change significantly after surgery. CONCLUSION In advanced liver cirrhosis patients with refractory ascites, hernias can be safely treated with elective surgical repair. Mortality rate within 30 days did not differ by the presence or absence of refractory ascites. Elective hernia repair might be beneficial for treatment of abdominal wall hernia in cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites.

Abstract
We describe a simple and reliable route for forming microscale droplets covered with amphiphilic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) functionalized with mixed hydrophilic and hydrophobic ligands on the AuNP surface. When an aqueous solution of amphiphilic AuNPs was mixed with hexane, the hexane (or water) droplets covered with amphiphilic AuNPs in the water (or hexane) phase were created, in which amphiphilic AuNPs in water phase migrated to the hexane-water interface. The extent of AuNP migration to the interface could be tuned by the ratio of the hydrophobic to hydrophilic ligands on the AuNP surface and the overall concentration of AuNPs. Importantly, the extent of the AuNP migration to the interface depending on the AuNP concentration followed the Langmuir isotherm model well. The equilibrium constant and maximum uptake of AuNPs at the interface were estimated using the Langmuir isotherm model. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the equilibrium constant determination of amphiphilic AuNPs at the liquid-liquid interface. Based on the maximum uptake of AuNPs at the hexane-water interface, we demonstrated that the AuNPs could be closely packed at the interface.

Abstract
The physical properties of neutrons emitted from neutron-induced fission are fundamental to our understanding of nuclear fission. However, while state-of-the-art fission models still incorporate isotropic fission neutron spectra, it is believed that the preequilibrium prefission component of these spectra is strongly anisotropic. The lack of experimental guidance on this feature has not motivated incorporation of anisotropic neutron spectra in fission models, though any significant anisotropy would impact descriptions of a fissioning system. In the present work, an excess of counts at high energies in the fission neutron spectrum of ^{239}Pu is clearly observed and identified as an excess of the preequilibrium prefission distribution above the postfission neutron spectrum. This excess is separated from the underlying postfission neutron spectrum, and its angular distribution is determined as a function in incident neutron energy and outgoing neutron detection angle. Comparison with neutron scattering models provides the first experimental evidence that the preequilibrium angular distribution is uncorrelated with the fission axis. The results presented here also impact the interpretation of several influential prompt fission neutron spectrum measurements.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of treating gastric cancer by injecting a pluronic F-127 sol-gel formulation of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) into normal tissue surrounding the tumor using a hollow microneedle. The MTS tetrazolium assay was performed to assess the cytotoxicity of 5-FU after application to gastric cancer cells at different concentrations for 1, 5 and 10 h. Gastric cancer cells were inoculated subcutaneously into 30 male nude mice (CrjBALB/c-nu/nu mice, male); the inoculated mouse were divided into three groups. One group received no treatment, whereas the two other groups received free 5-FU gel (40 mg/kg) and 5-FU gel (40 mg/kg) for 4 days, respectively. Mean tumor volume, apoptotic index (TUNEL) and proliferative index (Ki 67) were evaluated in all groups. Cell viability was 77.3% when 1.22 g of free 5-FU was administered, whereas cell viability was 37.4% and 43.5% when 0.122 g of free 5-FU was administered per hour for 10 h and 0.244 g of free 5-FU was administered for 5 h (p < .01). The 5-FU sol-gel induced apoptosis and significantly inhibited cell proliferation compared to the free 5-FU (p < .01). In addition, xenografted tumor growth was significantly suppressed by administration of the 5-FU sol-gel formulation to inoculated mice (p < .01), and 71% (5/7) of xenografted tumors disappeared after 4 weeks. In conclusion, peri-tumor injection of a 5-FU sol-gel formulation into normal tissue surrounding the tumor mass using a hollow microneedle is an effective method for treating gastric cancer.
