Comparative analysis of diagnostic methods and risk factors for Aelurostrongylus abstrusus infection in brazilian cats

This study aimed to prospectively evaluate the risk factors of infection by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in Brazilian cats with cough and/or radiographic changes, using as diagnostic tools the Baermann method (BM), polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of feces, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and cytology. Forty-three cats that were presented with cough or lung radiographic abnormalities compatible with bronchoalveolar disease were included in the study. After clinical evaluation, feces samples were collected to investigate lungworm parasitism through BM and PCR. BALF was performed to provide samples for cytology, bacteriology, and fungal culture. Stool PCR was considered the gold standard for diagnosis tests, and the other methods were evaluated by their agreement. PCR presented 74% (32/43) of positivity for A. abstrusus, while in the BM, 41% (18/43) were positive. BM showed sensitivity of 56.25% and specificity of 100% when compared with PCR. No larva was found in the cytological evaluation of 21 BALF samples. Lungworm is an important cause of bronchopulmonary disease in domestic cats in Brazil and should be included as a differential diagnosis when a cat is presented with cough or radiographic abnormalities. BM is a sensitive, non-invasive, and cheap technique to diagnose the disease, but it is not as sensitive as PCR.

A dysprosium single molecule magnet outperforming current pseudocontact shift agents

A common criterion for designing performant single molecule magnets and pseudocontact shift tags is a large magnetic anisotropy. In this article we present a dysprosium complex chemically designed to exhibit strong easy-axis type magnetic anisotropy that is preserved in dichloromethane solution at room temperature. Our detailed theoretical and experimental studies on the magnetic properties allowed explaining several features typical of highly performant SMMs. Moreover, the NMR characterization shows remarkably large chemical shifts, outperforming the current state-of-the art PCS tags.

A robust dysprosium(iii) single molecule magnet with large uniaxial magnetic anisotropy induces pseudocontact shifts at almost doubled distance compared to standard shift agents.

Spleen and lung virome analysis of South American fur seals (Arctocephalus australis) collected on the southern Brazilian coast

South American fur seals (Arctocephalus australis) are believed to reach the coast of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) through sea currents. They live in colonies and are frequently found resting on the beach. However, it is also common to find dead pinnipeds on beaches, sharing the environment with humans, domestic animals and other wild species on the coast and facilitating the transmission of pathogens. In the present study, a metagenomic approach was applied to evaluate the viral diversity in organs of fur seals found deceased along the coast of the state of RS, southern Brazil. The lungs and spleens of 29 animals were collected, macerated individually, pooled separately (one pool for lungs and another for spleens) and sequenced using the Illumina MiSeq platform. Sequences more closely related to members of the Anelloviridae and Circoviridae families were detected. Nine putative new species of anellovirus and one putative new genus, named Nitorquevirus, were described. Additionally, the circovirus sequences found in the lungs of A. australis have a common ancestor with PCV3, a proposed swine pathogen. Our study expanded the knowledge about viral communities in pinnipeds and could be useful for monitoring new viruses and potential viral sharing among wildlife, domestic animals, and humans.

Stability in solution and chemoprotection by octadecavanadates(IV/V) in E. coli cultures

Two mixed-valence octadecavanadates, (NH₄)₂(Me₄N)₅[V^IV₁₂V^V₆O₄₂I]·Me₄NI·5H₂O (V₁₈I) and [{K₆(OH₂)₁₂V^IV₁₁V^V₇O₄₁(PO₄)·4H₂O}_n] (V₁₈P), were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and FTIR, Raman, ⁵¹V NMR, EPR and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopies. The chemoprotective activity of V₁₈I and V₁₈P towards the alkylating agent diethyl sulfate was assessed in E. coli cultures. The complex V₁₈I was nontoxic in concentrations up to 5.0 mmol L^-1, while V₁₈P presented moderate toxicity in the concentration range 0.10 - 10 mmol L^-1. Conversely, a ca. 35% enhancement in culture growth as compared to cells treated only with diethyl sulfate was observed upon addition of V₁₈I (0.10 to 2.5 mmol L^-1), while the combination of diethyl sulfate with V₁₈P increased the cytotoxicity presented by diethyl sulfate alone. ⁵¹V NMR and EPR speciation studies showed that V₁₈I is stable in solution, while V₁₈P suffers partial breakage to give low nuclearity oxidometalates of vanadium(V) and (IV). According to the results, the chemoprotective effect depends strongly on the direct reactivity of the polyoxidovanadates (POV) towards the alkylating agent. The reaction of diethyl sulfate with V₁₈I apparently produces a new, rearranged POV instead of poorly-reactive breakage products, while V₁₈P shows the formation and subsequent consumption of low-nuclearity species. The correlation of this chemistry with that of other mixed-valence polyoxidovanadates, [H₆V^IV₂V^V₁₂O₃₈PO₄]^5- (V₁₄) and [V^IV₈V^V₇O₃₆Cl]^6- (V₁₅), suggests a relationship between stability in solution and chemoprotective performance.

Seven-Coordinate Tb3+ Complexes with 90% Quantum Yields: High-Performance Examples of Combined Singlet- and Triplet-to-Tb3+ Energy-Transfer Pathways

Seven-coordinate, pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) complexes [Ln(bbpen)Cl] and [Ln(bbppn)Cl], in which Ln = Tb³⁺ (products I and II), Eu³⁺ (III and IV), and Gd³⁺ (V and VI), with bbpen^2- = N,N'-bis(2-oxidobenzyl)-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine and bbppn^2- = N,N'-bis(2-oxidobenzyl)-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-1,2-propanediamine, were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements, and photoluminescence (steady-state and time-resolved) spectroscopy. Under a static magnetic field of 0.1 T, the Tb³⁺ complexes I and II revealed single-ion-magnet behavior. Also, upon excitation at 320 nm at 300 K, I and II presented very high absolute emission quantum yields (0.90 ± 0.09 and 0.92 ± 0.09, respectively), while the corresponding Eu³⁺ complexes III and IV showed no photoluminescence. Detailed theoretical calculations on the intramolecular energy-transfer rates for the Tb³⁺ products indicated that both singlet and triplet ligand excited states contribute efficiently to the overall emission performance. The expressive quantum yields, Q_Ln^L, measured for I and II in the solid state and a dichloromethane solution depend on the excitation wavelength, being higher at 320 nm. Such a dependence was rationalized by computing the intersystem crossing rates (W_ISC) and singlet fluorescence lifetimes (τ_S) related to the population dynamics of the S₁ and T₁ levels. Thin films of product II showed high air stability and photostability upon continuous UV illumination, which allowed their use as downshifting layers in a green light-emitting device (LED). The prototypes presented a luminous efficacy comparable with those found in commercial LED coatings, without requiring encapsulation or dispersion of II in host matrixes. The results indicate that the PBP environment determined by the ethylenediamine (en)-based ligands investigated in this work favors the outstanding optical properties in Tb³⁺ complexes. This work presents a comprehensive structural, chemical, and spectroscopic characterization of two Tb³⁺ complexes of mixed-donor, en-based ligands, focusing on their outstanding optical properties. They constitute good molecular examples in which both triplet and singlet excited states provide energy to the Tb³⁺ ion and lead to high values of Q_Ln^L.

Exploring the Organometallic Route to Molecular Spin Qubits: The [CpTi(cot)] Case

The coherence time of the 17-electron, mixed sandwich complex [CpTi(cot)], (η⁸ -cyclooctatetraene)(η⁵ -cyclopentadienyl)titanium, reaches 34 μs at 4.5 K in a frozen deuterated toluene solution. This is a remarkable coherence time for a highly protonated molecule. The intramolecular distances between the Ti and H atoms provide a good compromise between instantaneous and spin diffusion sources of decoherence. Ab initio calculations at the molecular and crystal packing levels reveal that the characteristic low-energy ring rotations of the sandwich framework do not yield a too detrimental spin-lattice relaxation because of their small spin-phonon coupling. The volatility of [CpTi(cot)] and the accessibility of the semi-occupied, non-bonding d z 2 orbital make this neutral compound an ideal candidate for single-qubit addressing on surface and quantum sensing in combination with scanning probe microscopy.

A Rare Example of Four-Coordinate Nonoxido Vanadium(IV) Alkoxide in the Solid State: Structure, Spectroscopy, and Magnetization Dynamics

The distorted tetrahedral [V(OAd)₄] alkoxide (OAd = 1-adamantoxide, complex 1) is the first homoleptic, mononuclear vanadium(IV) alkoxide to be characterized in the solid state by X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound crystallizes in the cubic P4̅3 n space group with two highly disordered, crystallographically independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. Spin Hamiltonian parameters extracted from low temperature X- and Q-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments performed for polycrystalline samples of 1, both in the concentrated (bulk) form and diluted in the diamagnetic [Ti(OAd)₄] analogue, reveal a fully axial system with g _z < g _x, g _y and A _z ≫ A _x, A _y. Complex 1 has also been characterized by alternate current susceptometry with varying temperature (3-30 K) and static magnetic field (up to 8.5 T), showing field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization with relaxation times ranging from ca. 3 ms at 3 K to 0.02-0.03 ms at 30 K, in line with relevant results described recently for other potential molecular quantum bits. Pulsed EPR measurements, in turn, disclosed long coherence times of ca. 4 μs at temperatures lower than 40 K, despite the presence of the H-rich ligands. The slow spin relaxation in 1 is the first observed for a tetracoordinate nonoxido vanadium(IV) complex, and results are compared here to those generated by square-pyramidal V^IV(O)²⁺ and trigonal prismatic V⁴⁺ with oxygen donor atom sets. Considering that the number of promising d¹ complexes investigated in detail for slow magnetization dynamics is still small, the present work contributes to the establishment of possible structural/electronic correlations of interest to the field of quantum information processing.

Crystal structures of two mononuclear complexes of terbium(III) nitrate with the tripodal alcohol 1,1,1-tris-(hy-droxy-meth-yl)propane

Two new mononuclear cationic complexes in which the Tb^III ion is bis-chelated by the tripodal alcohol 1,1,1-tris-(hy-droxy-meth-yl)propane (H₃L^Et, C₆H₁₄O₃) were prepared from Tb(NO₃)₃·5H₂O and had their crystal and mol-ecular structures solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis after data collection at 100 K. Both products were isolated in reasonable yields from the same reaction mixture by using different crystallization conditions. The higher-symmetry complex dinitratobis[1,1,1-tris-(hy-droxy-meth-yl)propane]-terbium(III) nitrate di-meth-oxy-ethane hemisolvate, [Tb(NO₃)₂(H₃L^Et)₂]NO₃·0.5C₄H₁₀O₂, 1, in which the lanthanide ion is 10-coordinate and adopts an s-bicapped square-anti-prismatic coordination geometry, contains two bidentate nitrate ions bound to the metal atom; another nitrate ion functions as a counter-ion and a half-mol-ecule of di-meth-oxy-ethane (completed by a crystallographic twofold rotation axis) is also present. In product aqua-nitratobis[1,1,1-tris-(hy-droxy-meth-yl)propane]-terbium(III) dinitrate, [Tb(NO₃)(H₃L^Et)₂(H₂O)](NO₃)₂, 2, one bidentate nitrate ion and one water mol-ecule are bound to the nine-coordinate terbium(III) centre, while two free nitrate ions contribute to charge balance outside the tricapped trigonal-prismatic coordination polyhedron. No free water mol-ecule was found in either of the crystal structures and, only in the case of 1, di-meth-oxy-ethane acts as a crystallizing solvent. In both mol-ecular structures, the two tripodal ligands are bent to one side of the coordination sphere, leaving room for the anionic and water ligands. In complex 2, the methyl group of one of the H₃L^Et ligands is disordered over two alternative orientations. Strong hydrogen bonds, both intra- and inter-molecular, are found in the crystal structures due to the number of different donor and acceptor groups present.

Cobalt(II) chloride adducts with acetonitrile, propan-2-ol and tetrahydrofuran: considerations on nuclearity, reactivity and synthetic applications

High-spin cobalt(II) complexes are considered useful building blocks for the synthesis of single-molecule magnets (SMM) because of their intrinsic magnetic anisotropy. In this work, three new cobalt(II) chloride adducts with labile ligands have been synthesized from anhydrous CoCl2, to be subsequently employed as starting materials for heterobimetallic compounds. The products were characterized by elemental, spectroscopic (EPR and FT–IR) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.trans-Tetrakis(acetonitrile-κN)bis(tetrahydrofuran-κO)cobalt(II) bis[(acetonitrile-κN)trichloridocobaltate(II)], [Co(C2H3N)4(C4H8O)2][CoCl3(C2H3N)]2, (1), comprises mononuclear ions and contains both acetonitrile and tetrahydrofuran (thf) ligands, The coordination polymercatena-poly[[tetrakis(propan-2-ol-κO)cobalt(II)]-μ-chlorido-[dichloridocobalt(II)]-μ-chlorido], [Co2Cl4(C3H8O)4], (2′), was prepared by direct reaction between anhydrous CoCl2and propan-2-ol in an attempt to rationalize the formation of the CoCl2–alcohol adduct (2), probably CoCl2(HOiPr)m. The binuclear complex di-μ-chlorido-1:2κ4Cl:Cl-dichlorido-2κ2Cl-tetrakis(tetrahydrofuran-1κO)dicobalt(II), [Co2Cl4(C4H8O)4], (3), was obtained from (2) after recrystallization from tetrahydrofuran. All three products present cobalt(II) centres in both octahedral and tetrahedral environments, the former usually less distorted than the latter, regardless of the nature of the neutral ligand. Product (2′) is stabilized by an intramolecular hydrogen-bond network that appears to favour atransarrangement of the chloride ligands in the octahedral moiety; this differs from thecisdisposition found in (3). The expected easy displacement of the bound solvent molecules from the metal coordination sphere makes the three compounds good candidates for suitable starting materials in a number of synthetic applications.

Vectorial competence of Amblyomma tonelliae to transmit Rickettsia rickettsii

The aim of this work was to test the vectorial competence of Amblyomma tonelliae (Ixodida: Ixodidae) to transmit Rickettsia rickettsii (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae), the agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). All parasitic stages of A. tonelliae were exposed to R. rickettsii by allowing each stage to feed on hosts inoculated with this pathogen. Thereafter, ticks were fed on uninfected hosts. All stages of A. tonelliae were able to acquire the R. rickettsii infection and maintain it by transstadial and transovarial transmission. When infected ticks fed on uninfected hosts, the hosts developed rickettsiosis disease. This study demonstrates the vectorial competence of A. tonelliae to transmit R. rickettsii. These results have epidemiological relevance because A. tonelliae is one of the tick species most likely to infest humans in Argentina, including in areas in which RMSF has been reported.

Crystal structures of two deca-vanadates(V) with penta-aqua-manganese(II) pendant groups: (NMe4)2[V10O28{Mn(H2O)5}2]·5H2O and [NH3C(CH2OH)3]2[V10O28{Mn(H2O)5}2]·2H2O

Two heterometallic deca-vanadate(V) compounds, bis-(tetra-methyl-ammonium) deca-aquadi-μ4-oxido-tetra-μ3-oxido-hexa-deca-μ2-oxido-hexa-oxidodimang-anese(II)-deca-vanadate(V) penta-hydrate, (Me4N)2[V10O28{Mn(H2O)5}2]·5H2O, A, and bis-{[tris-(hy-droxy-meth-yl)meth-yl]ammonium} deca-aquadi-μ4-oxido-tetra-μ3-oxido-hexa-deca-μ2-oxido-hexa-oxidodimanganese(II)deca-vanadate(V) dihydrate, [NH3C(CH2OH)3]2[V10O28{Mn(H2O)5}2]·2H2O, B, have been synthesized under mild reaction conditions in an aqueous medium. Both polyanions present two [Mn(OH2)5](2+) complex units bound to the deca-vanadate cluster through oxide bridges. In A, the deca-vanadate unit has 2/m symmetry, whereas in B it has twofold symmetry. Apart from this, the main differences between A and B rest on the organic cations, tetra-methyl-ammonium and [tris-(hy-droxy-meth-yl)meth-yl]ammonium, respectively, and on the number and arrangement of the water mol-ecules of crystallization. In both compounds, the H atoms from the coordinating water mol-ecules participate in extensive three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding networks, which link the cluster units both directly and through solvent mol-ecules and, in B, through the 'tris-' cation hydroxyl groups. The cation in B also participates in N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. A number of C-H⋯O inter-actions are also observed in both structures.

Crystal structure of an eight-coordinate terbium(III) ion chelated by N,N'-bis-(2-hy-droxy-benz-yl)-N,N'-bis-(pyridin-2-ylmeth-yl)ethyl-enedi-amine (bbpen(2-)) and nitrate

The reaction of terbium(III) nitrate penta­hydrate in aceto­nitrile with N,N′-bis­(2-hy­droxy­benz­yl)-N,N′-bis­(pyridin-2-ylmeth­yl)ethyl­enedi­amine (H₂bbpen), previously deprotonated with tri­ethyl­amine, produced the mononuclear compound [Tb(Cbbpen)(NO₃)]. The mol­ecule lies on a twofold rotation axis and the Tb^III ion is eight-coordinate with a slightly distorted dodeca­hedral coordination geometry.

The reaction of terbium(III) nitrate penta­hydrate in aceto­nitrile with N,N′-bis­(2-hy­droxy­benz­yl)-N,N′-bis­(pyridin-2-ylmeth­yl)ethyl­enedi­amine (H₂bbpen), previously deprotonated with tri­ethyl­amine, produced the mononuclear compound [N,N′-bis­(2-oxidobenzyl-κO)-N,N′-bis­(pyridin-2-ylmethyl-κN)ethylenedi­amine-κ²N,N′](nitrato-κ²O,O′)terbium(III), [Tb(C₂₈H₂₈N₄O₂)(NO₃)]. The mol­ecule lies on a twofold rotation axis and the Tb^III ion is eight-coordinate with a slightly distorted dodeca­hedral coordination geometry. In the symmetry-unique part of the mol­ecule, the pyridine and benzene rings are both essentially planar and form a dihedral angle of 61.42 (7)°. In the mol­ecular structure, the N₄O₄ coordination environment is defined by the hexa­dentate bbpen ligand and the bidentate nitrate anion. In the crystal, a weak C—H⋯O hydrogen bond links mol­ecules into a two-dimensional network parallel to (001).

A new ring-like arrangement of vanadyl(IV) groups bridged by monodentate alkoxides: cyclo-decakis(μ-cyclohexylmethanolato)pentakis[oxidovanadium(IV)]

The pentanuclear title compound, [V(5)(C(7)H(13)O)(10)O(5)], has a metal-oxygen core that consists of five vanadyl(IV) centres bridged by the O atoms of cyclohexylmethanolate ligands. This particular ring topology is new to oxovanadium(IV) chemistry and resembles the structure proposed for [V(5)O(15)](5-) on the basis of (51)V NMR studies in aqueous solution. The bulky cyclohexylmethanolate ligands adopt chair-like conformations and project outwards from the central cyclic core. The title compound crystallizes in a centrosymmetric triclinic unit cell, which contains four independent but chemically identical molecules in the asymmetric unit. The crystal structure is devoid of any significant intermolecular interactions.

Experimental infection of the tick Amblyomma cajennense, Cayenne tick, with Rickettsia rickettsii, the agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever

In the laboratory, Amblyomma cajennense (Acari: Ixodidae) (Fabricius) larvae, nymphs and adults were exposed to Rickettsia rickettsii by feeding on needle-inoculated animals, and thereafter reared on uninfected guinea pigs or rabbits. Regardless of the tick stage that acquired the infection, subsequent tick stages were shown to be infected (confirming transstadial and transovarial transmissions) and were able to transmit R. rickettsii to uninfected animals, as demonstrated by serological and molecular analyses. However, the larval, nymphal and adult stages of A. cajennense were shown to be partially refractory to R. rickettsii infection, as in all cases, only part of the ticks became infected by this agent, after being exposed to rickettsemic animals. In addition, less than 50% of the infected engorged females transmitted rickettsiae transovarially, and when they did so, only part of the offspring became infected, indicating that vertical transmission alone is not enough to maintain R. rickettsii in A. cajennense for multiple generations. Finally, the R. rickettsii-infected tick groups had lower reproductive performance than the uninfected control group. Our results indicate that A. cajennense have a low efficiency to maintain R. rickettsii for successive generations, as R. rickettsii-infection rates should decline drastically throughout the successive tick generations.

Sol–gel processing of a bimetallic alkoxide precursor confined in a porous glass matrix: A route to novel glass/metal oxide nanocomposites

In this work we present the utilization of the heterometallic alkoxide [FeCl{Ti(2)(OPr(i))(9)}] as the first sol-gel single-source precursor to achieve nanocomposites made of iron and titanium oxides incorporated into Porous Vycor Glass (PVG). The nanocomposites were prepared by the impregnation of the precursor in a PVG plate followed by hydrolysis reactions. Different samples were obtained by further thermal treatment of the hydrolyzed sample. The nanocomposites were characterized by UV-vis-NIR, Raman and EPR spectroscopies, XRD and TEM. The results indicate that the room-temperature hydrolyzed samples are formed by nanoparticles of FeOOH and brookite-TiO(2) embedded on a glassy matrix. After the heat treatment at temperatures above 900 degrees C, a pseudobrookite Fe(2)TiO(5) was formed. All samples present high transparency and homogeneity. The results showed here indicate that the sol-gel process using the single-source precursor [FeCl{Ti(2)(OPr(i))(9)}] should be a novel and efficient approach to the preparation of nanometric Fe/Ti oxides incorporated into a glassy matrix.

Is female sex an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality in acute myocardial infarction?

OBJECTIVE

To assess whether female sex is a factor independently related to in-hospital mortality in acute myocardial infarction.

METHODS

Of 600 consecutive patients (435 males and 165 females) with acute myocardial infarction, we studied 13 demographic and clinical variables obtained at the time of hospital admission through uni- and multivariate analysis, and analyzed their relation to in-hospital death.

RESULTS

Females were older (p<0.001) and had a higher incidence of hypertension (p<0.001). Males were more frequently smokers (p<0.001). The remaining risk factors had a similar incidence among both sexes. All variables underwent uni- and multivariate analysis. Through univariate analysis, the following variables were found to be associated with in-hospital death: female sex (p<0.001), age >70 years (p<0.001), the presence of previous coronary artery disease (p=0.0004), previous myocardial infarction (p<0.001), infarction in the anterior wall (p=0.007), presence of left ventricular dysfunction (p<0.001), and the absence of thrombolytic therapy (p=0.04). Through the multivariate analysis of logistic regression, the following variables were associated with in-hospital mortality: female sex (p=0.001), age (p=0.008), the presence of previous myocardial infarction (p=0.02), and left ventricular dysfunction (p<0.001).

CONCLUSION

After adjusting for all risk variables, female sex proved to be a variable independently related to in-hospital mortality in acute myocardial infarction.

Hydrocortisone increases the numbers of KL1+ cells, a discrete thymic epithelial cell subset characterized by high molecular weight cytokeratin expression

The thymic epithelium, a major component of the thymic microenvironment, is a heterogeneous tissue bearing distinct monoclonal antibody-defined subsets. Among these, KL1+ cells represent a mouse medullary subpopulation characterized by high mol wt cytokeratin expression. Given the fact that thymic epithelial cells (TEC) express glucocorticoid receptors and that glucocorticoid hormones are known to modulate the expression of keratins, we decided to study the in vivo effects of hydrocortisone on KL1+ cells in normal and autoimmune mice. Within 24 h after a single injection of this steroid we observed a significant increase in the number of KL1+ cells. Interestingly, this effect was reversible and was no longer detected 7 days after treatment. Parallel studies analyzing the effects of hydrocortisone on the secretion of thymulin, a chemically defined thymic hormone revealed a transient decrease in serum levels of this hormone, but with different kinetics than the effects on KL1+ cells. Ontogenetic studies showed that the responsiveness of TEC to hydrocortisone, in terms of high mol wt cytokeratin expression, appeared late in fetal life and disappeared in aging animals. Importantly, aging, but also young adult, autoimmune mice were not responsive. In vitro experiments using a mouse TEC line confirmed the data observed in vivo demonstrating that the increase in KL1+ cells is a direct effect of hydrocortisone on TEC. The bulk of the data presently reported demonstrates that glucocorticoid hormone can act on TEC modulating the expression of both secretory and cytoskeletal protein families.
