Abstract
BACKGROUND Explanations for the disproportional COVID-19 burden among immigrants relative to host-country natives include differential exposure to the virus and susceptibility due to poor health conditions. Prior to the pandemic, immigrants displayed deteriorating health with duration of residence that may be associated with increased susceptibility over time. The aim of this study was to compare immigrant-native COVID-19 mortality by immigrants' duration of residence to examine the role of differential susceptibility. METHODS A population-based cohort study was conducted with individuals between 18 and 100 years old registered in Sweden between 1 January 2015 and 15 June 2022. Cox regression models were run to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Inequalities in COVID-19 mortality between immigrants and the Swedish-born population in the working-age group were concentrated among those of non-Western origins and from Finland with more than 15 years in Sweden, while for those of retirement age, these groups showed higher COVID-19 mortality HRs regardless of duration of residence. Both age groups of immigrants from Africa and the Middle East showed consistently higher COVID-19 mortality HRs. For the working-age population: Africa: HR<15: 2.46, 95%CI: 1.78, 3.38; HR≥15: 1.49, 95%CI: 1.01, 2.19; and from the Middle East: HR<15: 1.20, 95%CI: 0.90, 1.60; HR≥15: 1.65, 95%CI: 1.32, 2.05. For the retirement-age population: Africa: HR<15: 3.94, 95%CI: 2.85, 5.44; HR≥15: 1.66, 95%CI: 1.32, 2.09; Middle East: HR<15: 3.27, 95%CI: 2.70, 3.97; HR≥15: 2.12, 95%CI: 1.91, 2.34. CONCLUSIONS Differential exposure, as opposed to differential susceptibility, likely accounted for the higher COVID-19 mortality observed among those origins who were disproportionately affected by the pandemic in Sweden.

Abstract
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly aggressive malignancy, with a median survival of less than 12 months and a 5-year survival of less than 10 %. Here, we have established an image-based screening pipeline for quantifying single PDAC spheroid dynamics in genetically and phenotypically diverse PDAC cell models. Wild-type KRas PDAC cells formed tight/compact spheroids - compaction of these structures was completely blocked by cytoplasmic dynein and focal adhesion kinase (FAK) inhibitors. In contrast, PDAC cells containing mutant KRas formed loosely aggregated spheroids that grew significantly slower following inhibition of polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) or focal adhesion kinase (FAK). Independent of genetic background, multicellular PDAC-mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) spheroids self-organized into structures with an MSC-dominant core. The inclusion of MSCs into wild-type KRas PDAC spheroids modestly affected their compaction; however, MSCs significantly increased the compaction and growth of mutant KRas PDAC spheroids. Notably, exogenous collagen 1 potentiated PANC1 spheroid compaction while ITGA1 knockdown in PANC1 cells blocked MSC-induced PANC1 spheroid compaction. In agreement with a role for collagen-based integrin adhesion complexes in stromal cell-induced PDAC phenotypes, we also discovered that MSC-induced PANC1 spheroid growth was completely blocked by the ITGB1 immunoneutralizing antibody mAb13. Finally, multiplexed single-cell immunohistochemical analysis of a 25 patient PDAC tissue microarray revealed a relationship between decreased variance in Spearman r correlation for ITGA1 and PLK1 expression within the tumor cell compartment of PDAC in patients with advanced disease stage, and elevated expression of both ITGA1 and PLK1 in PDAC was found to be associated with decreased patient survival. Taken together, this work uncovers new therapeutic vulnerabilities in PDAC that are relevant to the progression of this stromal cell-rich malignancy and which may reveal strategies for improving patient outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) of mitral regurgitation is less invasive than surgery but has greater 5-year mortality and reintervention risks, and leads to smaller improvements in physical functioning. The study objective was to quantify patient preferences for risk-benefit trade-offs associated with TEER and surgery. METHODS AND RESULTS A discrete choice experiment survey was administered to patients with mitral regurgitation. Attributes included procedure type; 30-day mortality risk; 5-year mortality risk and physical functioning for 5 years; number of hospitalizations in the next 5 years; and risk of additional surgery in the next 5 years. A mixed-logit regression model was fit to estimate preference weights. Two hundred one individuals completed the survey: 63% were female and mean age was 74 years. On average, respondents preferred TEER over surgery. To undergo a less invasive procedure (ie, TEER), respondents would accept up to a 13.3% (95% CI, 8.7%-18.5%) increase in reintervention risk above a baseline of 10%, 4.6 (95% CI, 3.1-6.2) more hospitalizations above a baseline of 1, a 10.7% (95% CI, 6.5%-14.5%) increase in 5-year mortality risk above a baseline of 20%, or more limited physical functioning representing nearly 1 New York Heart Association class (0.7 [95% CI, 0.4-1.1]) over 5 years. CONCLUSIONS Patients in general preferred TEER over surgery. When holding constant all other factors, a functional improvement from New York Heart Association class III to class I maintained over 5 years would be needed, on average, for patients to prefer surgery over TEER.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The 'second-generation' (i.e. the children of migrants) represent one of the fastest growing subpopulations of the child and young adult populations in Europe today. The research so far appears to indicate that their mortality risk is elevated relative to people with non-migrant backgrounds. SOURCES OF DATA Peer-reviewed publications. AREAS OF AGREEMENT Second-generation status is a clear marker of elevated mortality risk in Europe in early life (including stillbirth, perinatal, neonatal and infant mortality) and adulthood, particularly if the parent(s) were born outside of Europe. Socioeconomic inequality plays an important, albeit rarely defining, role in these elevated risks. AREAS OF CONTROVERSY It remains unclear what causes-of-death are driving these elevated mortality risks. The exact influence of (non-socioeconomic) explanatory factors (e.g. health care, racism & discrimination, and factors related to integration) on the elevated mortality risks of the second-generation also remains unclear. GROWING POINTS The second-generation will continue to grow and diversify in Europe; we must intervene to address these inequalities now. AREAS TIMELY FOR DEVELOPING RESEARCH Place more emphasis on the complexity of migration background, specific causes-of-death, and understanding the roles of explanatory factors beyond socioeconomic background.

Abstract
Aqueous-organic solvent mixtures are commonly used for reactions or analyses, where the components of a system are insoluble in pure water. The acid dissociation constant is an important property to measure in these media as it determines the charge state, solubility, and reactivity of a molecule. While NMR spectroscopy is an established tool for the measurement of pKa in water, its use in aqueous-organic solvents is greatly hindered by the requirement for external calibrants on which a working pH scale is set. Such calibrants include buffer solutions, "anchor" molecules with known pKa values, and pH electrodes that have undergone lengthy calibration procedures in the solvent mixture of interest. However, such calibrations are often inconvenient to perform, while literature pKa data covering the required range may not be available at the solvent composition or the temperature of interest. Here, we present a method to determine pKa in aqueous-organic solvents directly by NMR. We first determine pKa of an organic acid such as 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,6-DHB) by measuring its 1H chemical shift as a function of concentration along a concentration gradient using chemical shift imaging (CSI). Using 2,6-DHB as a reference, we then determine pKa of less acidic molecules in single CSI experiments via the variation of their 1H chemical shifts along pH gradients. As proof of concept, we determine the pKa values of organic acids and bases up to pKa 10 in 50% (v/v) 1-propanol/water, 50% (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide/water, and 30% (v/v) acetonitrile/water and obtain good agreement with the literature values.

Abstract
Law enforcement officers are the primary individuals called and who respond to situations of heightened concern. They make split-second observations and decisions based on how best to react to given safety situations and those involved. Characteristics of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), if not properly understood and reacted to, may quickly escalate a law enforcement officer call in a negative way, making autism training for law enforcement officers imperative. To ascertain what is known about autism training for law enforcement officers, a scoping review was conducted. Five studies met final inclusion criteria. The trainees, context and development of the training, evaluation procedures, and training outcomes are synthesized to provide guidance for future training implementation teams. Areas for future research are presented.

Abstract
Migrants have been more affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether this has varied over the course of the pandemic remains unknown. We examined how inequalities in intensive care unit (ICU) admission and death related to COVID-19 by country of birth have evolved over the course of the pandemic, while considering the contribution of social conditions and vaccination uptake. A population-based cohort study was conducted including adults living in Sweden between March 1, 2020 and June 1, 2022 (n = 7,870,441). Poisson regressions found that migrants from Africa, Middle East, Asia and European countries without EU28/EEA, UK and Switzerland had higher risk of COVID-19 mortality and ICU admission than Swedish-born. High risks of COVID-19 ICU admission was also found in migrants from South America. Inequalities were generally reduced through subsequent waves of the pandemic. In many migrant groups socioeconomic status and living conditions contributed to the disparities while vaccination campaigns were decisive when such became available.

Abstract
We have combined saturation transfer difference NMR (STD NMR) with chemical shift imaging (CSI) and controlled concentration gradients of small molecule ligands to develop imaging STD NMR, a new tool for the assessment of protein-ligand interactions. Our methodology allows the determination of protein-ligand dissociation constants (KD) and assessment of the binding specificity in a single NMR tube, avoiding time-consuming titrations. We demonstrate the formation of suitable and reproducible concentration gradients of ligand along the vertical axis of the tube, against homogeneous protein concentration, and present a CSI pulse sequence for the acquisition of STD NMR experiments at different positions along the sample tube. Compared to the conventional methodology in which the [ligand]/[protein] ratio is increased manually, we can perform STD NMR experiments at a greater number of ratios and construct binding epitopes in a fraction (∼20%) of the experimental time. Second, imaging STD NMR also allows us to screen for non-specific binders, by monitoring any variation of the binding epitope map at increasing [ligand]/[protein] ratios. Hence, the proposed method does carry the potential to speed up and smooth out the drug discovery process.

Abstract
Multicomponent supramolecular systems can be used to achieve different properties and new behaviors compared to their corresponding single component systems. Here, a two-component system is used, showing that a non-gelling component modifies the assembly of the gelling component, allowing access to co-assembled structures that cannot be formed from the gelling component alone. The systems are characterized across multiple length scales, from the molecular level by NMR and CD spectroscopy to the microstructure level by SANS and finally to the material level using nanoindentation and rheology. By exploiting the enhanced mechanical properties achieved through addition of the second component, multicomponent noodles are formed with superior mechanical properties to those formed by the single-component system. Furthermore, the non-gelling component can be triggered to crystallize within the multicomponent noodles, allowing the preparation of new types of hierarchical composite noodles.

Abstract
We use a pH-driven annealing process to convert between co-assembled and self-sorted networks in multicomponent gels. The initially formed gels at low pH are co-assembled, with the two components coexisting within the same self-assembled structures. We use an enzymatic approach to increase the pH, resulting in a gel-to-sol transition, followed by a hydrolysis to lower the pH once again. As the pH decreases, a self-sorted network is formed by a two-stage gelation process determined by the pKa of each component. This approach can be expanded to layered systems to generate many varied systems by changing composition and rates of pH change, adapting their microstructure and so allowing access to a far greater range of morphologies and complexity than can be achieved in single component systems.

Abstract
A small but growing body of studies have documented the alarming mortality situation of adult descendants of migrants in a number of European countries. Nearly all of them have focused on all-cause mortality to reveal these important health inequalities. This paper takes advantage of the Swedish population registers to study all-cause and cause-specific mortality among men and women aged 15-44 in Sweden from 1997 to 2016 to a level of granularity unparalleled elsewhere. It adopts a multi-generation, multi-origin and multi-cause-of-death approach. Using extended, competing-risks survival models, it aims to show (1) how the all-cause mortality of immigrants arriving as adults (the G1), immigrants arriving as children (the G1.5) and children of immigrants born in Sweden to at least one immigrant parent (the G2) differs versus ancestral Swedes and (2) what causes-of-deaths drive these differentials. For all-cause mortality, most G1 (not Finns or Sub-Saharan Africans) have a mortality advantage. This contrasts with a near systematic reversal in the mortality of the G1.5 and G2 (notably among men), which is driven by excess accident and injury, suicide, substance use and other external cause mortality. Given that external causes-of-death are preventable and avoidable, the findings raise questions about integration processes, the levels of inequality immigrant populations are exposed to in Sweden and ultimately, whether the legacy of immigration has been positive. Strengths of the study include the use of quality data and advanced methods, the granularity of the estimates, and the provision of evidence that highlights the precarious mortality situation of the seldom-studied G1.5.

Abstract
The spotted lanternfly (SLF), Lycorma delicatula (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae), is a generalist phloem feeder that produces copious amounts of honeydew, which in turn coats the understory. These insects form large aggregations covering the trunks of some trees, while similar trees nearby mysteriously seem unattractive. We investigated whether volatiles from SLF honeydew are attractive to conspecifics by collecting honeydew from the field and testing it for SLF attraction in a two-choice olfactometer. We found that honeydew excreted by adult male SLF was significantly attractive to male SLF, but not female SLF. Although the honeydew excreted by adult female SLF did not significantly attract male or female SLF, both sexes showed a positive trend towards attraction in response to female honeydew in the olfactometer. Analysis of the headspace volatiles of honeydew was conducted, and numerous semiochemicals were identified. Five of which, 2-heptanone, 2-octanone, 2-nonanone, benzyl acetate, and 1-nonanol, were tested in two-choice behavioral assays against a blank control. Benzyl acetate and 2-octanone were attractive to both sexes, whereas 2-heptanone was only attractive to males, and 2-nonanone only to females. The remaining compound, 1-nonanol, repelled females, but not males. Although honeydew has been reported as a source of kairomones for some natural enemies, this may be the first report of sex-specific attractants for conspecific insects found in the honeydew volatiles of a planthopper.

Abstract
The binding of calcium and magnesium ions (M2+) by polymers and other macromolecules in aqueous solution is ubiquitous across chemistry and biology. At present, it is difficult to assess the binding affinity of macromolecules for M2+ without recourse to potentiometric titrations and/or isothermal titration calorimetry. Both of these techniques require specialized equipment, and the measurements can be difficult to perform and interpret. Here, we present a new method based on 1H NMR chemical shift imaging (CSI) that enables the binding affinity of polymers to be assessed in a single experiment on standard high-field NMR equipment. In our method, M2+ acetate salt is weighed into a standard 5 mm NMR tube and a solution of polymer layered on top. Dissolution and diffusion of the salt carry the M2+ and acetate ions up through the solution. The concentrations of acetate, [Ac], and free (unbound) M2+, [M2+]f, are measured at different positions along the sample by CSI. Binding of M2+ to the polymer reduces [M2+]f and hinders the upward diffusion of M2+. A discrepancy is thus observed between [Ac] and [M2+]f from which the binding affinity of the polymer can be assessed. For systems which form insoluble complexes with M2+, such as sodium polyacrylate or carboxylate-functionalized nanocellulose (CNC), we can determine the concentration of M2+ at which the polymer will precipitate. We can also predict [M2+]f when a solution of polymer is mixed homogeneously with M2+ salt. We assess the binding properties of sodium polyacrylate, alginate, polystyrene sulfonate, CNC, polyethyleneimine, ethylenediamenetetraacetic acid, and maleate.

Abstract
Immigrants have higher life expectancy at age 1 than the native-born in Denmark, Finland and Norway do from 1990 to 2019. Immigrants in Denmark, Finland and Norway increasingly enhance national life expectancy at age 1 over time. Immigrants in Sweden have lower life expectancy at age 1 than native-born in Sweden do in 1990, but similar levels by 2019. The effect of immigrants on national life expectancy at age 1 in Sweden transforms from negative to positive over time. The unique mortality of immigrants affects rankings of life expectancy at age 1 in the Nordic region in recent years.

Abstract
Early detection of precancerous cysts or neoplasms, i.e., Intraductal Papillary Mucosal Neoplasms (IPMN), in pancreas is a challenging and complex task, and it may lead to a more favourable outcome. Once detected, grading IPMNs accurately is also necessary, since low-risk IPMNs can be under surveillance program, while high-risk IPMNs have to be surgically resected before they turn into cancer. Current standards (Fukuoka and others) for IPMN classification show significant intra- and inter-operator variability, beside being error-prone, making a proper diagnosis unreliable. The established progress in artificial intelligence, through the deep learning paradigm, may provide a key tool for an effective support to medical decision for pancreatic cancer. In this work, we follow this trend, by proposing a novel AI-based IPMN classifier that leverages the recent success of transformer networks in generalizing across a wide variety of tasks, including vision ones. We specifically show that our transformer-based model exploits pre-training better than standard convolutional neural networks, thus supporting the sought architectural universalism of transformers in vision, including the medical image domain and it allows for a better interpretation of the obtained results.

Abstract
Abstract
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is associated with very poor outcomes - fewer than 10 percent of patients survive beyond five years after diagnosis. The primary hurdles facing PDAC patients and clinicians are early dissemination, a lack of therapeutic targets and desmoplasia that renders the primary tumor refractory to chemotherapy. In this regard, we have previously reported that pseudopodium-enriched atypical kinase 1 (PEAK1) and integrin α1 (ITGA1) mediate gemcitabine resistance and metastasis in PDAC. To identify new mechanisms of PDAC progression, we mined the Cancer BioPortal and Human Cell Map BioID databases for additional pseudopodium-enriched (PDE) proteins that predict poor patient outcomes, correlate with PEAK1 and ITGA1 expression in PDAC, and interact with PEAK1 and ITGA1. Here, we identify Retinoic Acid Induced 14 (RAI14, Ankycorbin or NORPEG) as a new candidate driver of PDAC that is a constituent of the KRasG12D PDAC cell autonomous phosphoproteome, localizes to cytoskeleton/adhesion domains in PDAC cells and correlates in expression with ITGA1-binding collagens in PDAC. Knockdown or knockout of RAI14 in KRas mutant PDAC cells impaired adhesion-dependent proliferation/survival in vitro and tumor growth and metastasis in vivo. Single cell cyclic immunofluorescence (CycIF) further revealed that RAI14 supports a subpopulation of PDAC cells positive for proliferation, epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and antiapoptotic programs. By using a RAI14-focused bioinformatics pipeline in combination with proteomic and immunofluorescence data on the composition of ITGA1-dependent adhesion complexes in PDAC cells, we identified Polo-Like Kinase 1 (PLK1) as a candidate that may control RAI14 function and adhesion-regulated mitosis during PDAC progression. Notably, the potency of volasertib, a PLK1-specific inhibitor, was reduced in RAI14 knockout cells, supporting a model in which RAI14 mediates adhesion-dependent PLK1 functions in PDAC. Taken together, these studies uncover a mechanism for RAI14-driven PDAC progression and the development of strategies to increase chemotherapy sensitivity, reduce primary/metastatic tumor burden and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
pKa is an important property of a molecule which impacts many fields, such as drug design, catalysis, reactivity, and environmental toxicity. It is often necessary to measure pKa in nonaqueous media due to the poor solubility of an analyte in water, for example, many compounds of pharmaceutical interest. Although NMR methods to measure pKa in water are well established, determining pKa in organic solvents is laborious and problematic. We present an efficient one-shot method to determine the pKa of an analyte in an organic solvent in a single measurement. Diffusion of an acid into a basic solution of the analyte and a set of pH indicators establishes a pH gradient in the NMR tube. The chemical shift of a pH sensitive resonance of the analyte and the pH of the solution are then determined simultaneously as a function of position along the pH gradient by recording a chemical shift image of the NMR tube. The pKa of the analyte is then determined using the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation. The method can be implemented in any laboratory with a gradient equipped NMR high-field spectrometer and is demonstrated for a range of pharmaceutical compounds and inorganic phosphazene bases.

Abstract
Improvements in life expectancy at birth in the UK had stalled prior to 2020 and have fallen during the COVID-19 pandemic. The stagnation took place at a time of relatively high net migration, yet we know that migrants to Australia, the USA and some Nordic countries have positively impacted national life expectancy trends, outperforming native-born populations in terms of life expectancy. It is important to ascertain whether migrants have contributed positively to life expectancy in the UK, concealing worsening trends in the UK-born population, or whether relying on national life expectancy calculations alone may have masked excess mortality in migrant populations. We need a better understanding of the role and contribution of migrant populations to national life expectancy trends in the UK.

Abstract
This study used a stochastic simulation model to estimate the potential economic benefit of using timed artificial insemination (TAI) in combination with conventional unsorted (TCONV) and sexed (TSEX) semen in heifers only (TCONV-H, TSEX-H) and in both heifers and lactating cows (TCONV-HC, TSEX-HC) in a high-producing, pasture-based production system. The scenarios were compared with a conventional reproductive policy (CONV) in which heifers and cows were inseminated with conventional unsorted semen after estrus detection. Sensitivity analysis was also used to estimate the effect of hormone costs from TAI use on the profitability of each program relative to CONV. The mean annual (± standard deviation) profit advantage (ΔPROF) over CONV for TCONV-H, TCONV-HC, TSEX-H, and TSEX-HC scenarios were €3.90/cow ± 4.65, €34.11/cow ± 25.69, €13.96/cow ± 6.83, and €41.52/cow ± 42.86, respectively. Combined application of both technologies was shown to return a greater annual ΔPROF on average compared with that achievable from TAI alone. However, the risk of not returning a positive annual ΔPROF varied across the scenarios with higher risk in TCONV-H and TSEX-HC. Specifically, TCONV-H and TSEX-HC had a 24 and 18% chance, respectively, of not returning a positive annual ΔPROF. Sensitivity analysis showed that when hormone costs increased by €10/cow TCONV-H and TSEX-HC had a 38 and 23% chance, respectively, of not returning a positive annual ΔPROF. The range in ΔPROF for TCONV policies was most sensitive to the TAI pregnancy rate and TSEX policies were most sensitive to the relative fertility achieved with sexed compared with unsorted semen. This study has shown TAI and sexed semen are complementary technologies that can increase genetic gain and profitability in a pasture-based, dairy production system.

Abstract
Epithelial cells are charged with protection at barrier sites, but whether this normally beneficial response might sometimes become dysfunctional still needs definition. Here, we recognized a pattern of imbalance marked by basal epithelial cell growth and differentiation that replaced normal airspaces in a mouse model of progressive postviral lung disease due to the Sendai virus. Single-cell and lineage-tracing technologies identified a distinct subset of basal epithelial stem cells (basal ESCs) that extended into gas-exchange tissue to form long-term bronchiolar-alveolar remodeling regions. Moreover, this cell subset was selectively expanded by crossing a cell-growth and survival checkpoint linked to the nuclear-localized alarmin IL-33 that was independent of IL-33 receptor signaling and instead connected to autocrine chromatin accessibility. This mechanism creates an activated stem-progenitor cell lineage with potential for physiological or pathological function. Thus, conditional loss of Il33 gene function in basal epithelial cells disrupted the homeostasis of the epithelial barrier at skin and gut sites but also markedly attenuated postviral disease in the lung based on the downregulation of remodeling and inflammation. Thus, we define a basal ESC strategy to deploy innate immune machinery that appears to overshoot the primordial goal of self-defense. Our findings reveal new targets to stratify and correct chronic and often deadly postviral disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Understanding and improving obstetrical quality and safety is an important goal of professional societies, and many interventions such as checklists, safety bundles, educational interventions, or other culture changes have been implemented to improve the quality of care provided to obstetrical patients. Although many factors contribute to delivery decisions, a reduced workload has addressed how provider issues such as fatigue or behaviors surrounding impending shift changes may influence the delivery mode and outcomes. OBJECTIVE The objective was to assess whether intrapartum obstetrical interventions and adverse outcomes differ based on the temporal proximity of the delivery to the attending's shift change. STUDY DESIGN This was a secondary analysis from a multicenter obstetrical cohort in which all patients with cephalic, singleton gestations who attempted vaginal birth were eligible for inclusion. The primary exposure used to quantify the relationship between the proximity of the provider to their shift change and a delivery intervention was the ratio of time from the most recent attending shift change to vaginal delivery or decision for cesarean delivery to the total length of the shift. Ratios were used to represent the proportion of time completed in the shift by normalizing for varying shift lengths. A sensitivity analysis restricted to patients who were delivered by physicians working 12-hour shifts was performed. Outcomes chosen included cesarean delivery, episiotomy, third- or fourth-degree perineal laceration, 5-minute Apgar score of <4, and neonatal intensive care unit admission. Chi-squared tests were used to evaluate outcomes based on the proportion of the attending's shift completed. Adjusted and unadjusted logistic models fitting a cubic spline (when indicated) were used to determine whether the frequency of outcomes throughout the shift occurred in a statistically significant, nonlinear pattern RESULTS: Of the 82,851 patients eligible for inclusion, 47,262 (57%) had ratio data available and constituted the analyzable sample. Deliveries were evenly distributed throughout shifts, with 50.6% taking place in the first half of shifts. There were no statistically significant differences in the frequency of cesarean delivery, episiotomy, third- or fourth-degree perineal lacerations, or 5-minute Apgar scores of <4 based on the proportion of the shift completed. The findings were unchanged when evaluated with a cubic spline in unadjusted and adjusted logistic models. Sensitivity analyses performed on the 22.2% of patients who were delivered by a physician completing a 12-hour shift showed similar findings. There was a small increase in the frequency of neonatal intensive care unit admissions with a greater proportion of the shift completed (adjusted P=.009), but the findings did not persist in the sensitivity analysis. CONCLUSION Clinically significant differences in obstetrical interventions and outcomes do not seem to exist based on the temporal proximity to the attending physician's shift change. Future work should attempt to directly study unit culture and provider fatigue to further investigate opportunities to improve obstetrical quality of care, and additional studies are needed to corroborate these findings in community settings.

Abstract
Preliminary evidence points to higher morbidity and mortality from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in certain racial and ethnic groups, but population-based studies using microlevel data are lacking so far. We used register-based cohort data including all adults living in Stockholm, Sweden, between January 31, 2020 (the date of the first confirmed case of COVID-19) and May 4, 2020 (n = 1,778,670) to conduct Poisson regression analyses with region/country of birth as the exposure and underlying cause of COVID-19 death as the outcome, estimating relative risks and 95% confidence intervals. Migrants from Middle Eastern countries (relative risk (RR) = 3.2, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.6, 3.8), Africa (RR = 3.0, 95% CI: 2.2, 4.3), and non-Sweden Nordic countries (RR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.2, 1.8) had higher mortality from COVID-19 than persons born in Sweden. Especially high mortality risks from COVID-19 were found among persons born in Somalia, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Iran, and Iraq. Socioeconomic status, number of working-age household members, and neighborhood population density attenuated up to half of the increased COVID-19 mortality risks among the foreign-born. Disadvantaged socioeconomic and living conditions may increase infection rates in migrants and contribute to their higher risk of COVID-19 mortality.

Abstract
Impending and complete pathologic fractures often necessitate surgical fixation. Traditional orthopedic implants are commonly used, achieving clinically acceptable outcomes, but their metallic composition can impair radiographic evaluation and affect radiation treatments. Recognition of these concerns led to the development of radiolucent implants such as the minimally invasive Photodynamic Bone Stabilization System (PBSS; IlluminOss Medical Inc), featuring a light cured polymer contained within an inflatable balloon catheter. Two participating hospitals in one health care system reviewed cases using the PBSS implant. Twenty-five patients with 29 impending or pathologic fractures in the proximal radius or humerus from metastatic carcinoma, myeloma, lymphoma, and melanoma were identified. Clinical charts and imaging were reviewed to determine the status of the implant at final follow-up as well as complications. For analysis, a chi-square test was used for nominal variables and a t test was used for continuous variables. Eleven of the 25 patients were alive with disease at the time of analysis. Eight of 29 (27.5%) implants failed. Five of 25 (20%) patients required repeat surgery due to complications, including 3 revision open reduction and internal fixations, 1 open reduction and internal fixation for a periprosthetic fracture, and 1 screw removal. Five of the 9 cases (56%) (P=.03) with lesions in the distal humeral shaft had breakage of the implant by final follow-up, compared with 3 of 20 cases (15%) (P=.03) elsewhere in the humerus; no failures were seen in the radius. One of 4 patients (25%) also had failure in the surgical neck, although this did not reach significance. Five patients were noted to have progression of disease on follow-up radiographs, with 4 failures in patients with progression. The PBSS implants potentially allow improved surveillance of fracture healing and tumor recurrence along with decreased scattering of radiation during treatment. Unfortunately, there may be a higher rate of mechanical failures, particularly for lesions involving the distal humerus. This may be due to decreased cross-sectional area of the implant in this region as compared with the metaphyseal and proximal regions. Caution should be exercised when treating distal humeral pathologic fractures with large lytic lesions where the underlying disease process is not well controlled. [Orthopedics. 2021;44(3):154-159.].

Abstract
BACKGROUND Within Europe, France stands out as a major country that lacks recent and reliable evidence on how infant mortality levels vary among the native-born children of immigrants compared with the native-born children of two parents born in France. METHODS We used a nationally representative socio-demographic panel consisting of 296 400 births and 980 infant deaths for the period 2008-17. Children of immigrants were defined as being born to at least one parent born abroad and their infant mortality was compared with that of children born to two parents born in France. We first calculated infant mortality rates per 1000 live births. Then, using multi-level logit models, we calculated odds ratios of infant mortality in a series of models adjusting progressively for parental origins (M1), core demographic factors (M2), father's socio-professional category (M3) and area-level urbanicity and deprivation score (M4). RESULTS We documented a substantial amount of excess infant mortality among those children born to at least one parent from Eastern Europe, Northern Africa, Western Africa, Other Sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas, with variation among specific origin countries belonging to these groups. In most of these cases, the excess infant mortality levels persisted after adjusting for all individual-level and area-level factors. CONCLUSIONS Our findings, which can directly inform national public health policy, reaffirm the persistence of longstanding inequality in infant mortality according to parental origins in France and add to a growing body of evidence documenting excess infant mortality among the children of immigrants in Europe.

Abstract
The migrant mortality advantage has been observed extensively, but its authenticity is debated. In particular, concerns persist that the advantage is an artefact of the data, generated by the problems of recording mobility among foreign-born populations. Here, we build on the intersection of two recent developments: the first showing substantial age variation in the advantage-a deep U-shaped advantage at peak migration ages-and the second showing high levels of population over-coverage, the principal source of data artefact, at the same ages. We use event history analysis of Sweden's population registers (2010-15) to test whether this over-coverage can explain age variation in the migrant mortality advantage. We document its U-shape in Sweden and, crucially, demonstrate that large mortality differentials persist after adjusting for estimated over-coverage. Our findings contribute to ongoing debate by demonstrating that the migrant mortality advantage is real and by ruling out one of its primary mechanisms.

Abstract
This study used a stochastic simulation model to estimate the potential economic benefit of using sexed semen in heifers only and in heifers and lactating cows in a high-producing, pasture-based system under 3 fertility scenarios. Three breeding strategies were modeled: (1) only heifers inseminated with sexed semen and cows inseminated with conventional unsexed semen (SSH); (2) both heifers and cows inseminated with sexed semen (SSHC); and (3) a reference scenario in which all females were inseminated with conventional, unsexed semen (CONV). Each scenario was evaluated under 3 herd fertility states: high (HF), medium (MF), and low (LF), which, under the reference scenario, corresponded to herd replacement rates of 21, 25, and 31%, respectively. The model estimated the economic profit, including the net present value of the genetic gain from selection intensity. The economic return from adoption of sexed semen strategies declined, with reduced levels of baseline herd fertility turning negative in the LF state. The mean (±SD) sexed semen advantage (SSA) per cow for HF-SSH, MF-SSH, and LF-SSH scenarios were €30.61 ± 8.98, €27.45 ± 7.19, and €14.69 ± 11.06, respectively. However, the SSA per cow for HF-SSHC, MF-SSHC, and LF-SSHC scenarios were €49.14 ± 15.43, €18.46 ± 30.08, and -€19.30 ± 57.11. The range in economic profit for SSA for SSH was most sensitive to calf prices in HF-SSH and the pregnancy rate of sexed semen as a percentage of conventional unsorted semen in MF-SSH and LF-SSH. The range in economic profit for SSA for SSHC scenarios was most sensitive to the pregnancy rate of sexed semen as a percentage of conventional unsorted semen in HF-SSHC, MF-SSHC, and LF-SSHC. This study highlights the effect of baseline herd fertility state on the financial advantage of adopting sexed semen in a pasture-based dairy production system.

Abstract
Studies were conducted from 2015 to 2018 to evaluate spotted lanternfly (SLF) distribution and developmental suitability of different plant species in the U.S. Tree bands on 283 trees spanning 33 species captured 21,006 SLF in 2 yr. More SLF per tree were trapped on tree-of-heaven Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle (Sapindales: Simaroubaceae) than on other species, on average, and most adults were captured on tree-of-heaven. Frequency of detection of adult SLF was higher on tree-of-heaven than on other species but was actually equal or lower on tree-of-heaven than on all other species combined for younger SLF stages in 2015. An enclosed choice test between tree-of-heaven and black walnut Juglans nigra L. (Fagales: Juglandaceae) revealed nymphs showed little consistent preference, whereas adults consistently and significantly preferred tree-of-heaven. No-choice field sleeve studies evaluated SLF survivorship on 26 host plant species in 17 families. Ten plant species supported SLF for an average of ≥45 d, with the rest unable to support SLF for >30 d. Eight species were able to support development from first instar to adult: black walnut, chinaberry Melia azedarach L. (Sapindales: Meliaceae), oriental bittersweet Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb. (Celastrales: Celastraceae), tree-of-heaven, hops Humulus lupulus L. (Rosales: Cannabaceae), sawtooth oak Quercus acutissima Carruthers (Fagales: Fagaceae), butternut Juglans cinerea L, and tulip tree Liriodendron tulipifiera L. (Magnoliales: Magnoliaceae). The ability of SLF to develop to adult on hosts other than tree-of-heaven may impact pest management decisions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND HIV incidence among adolescents in southern Africa remains unacceptably high. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective HIV prevention intervention but there are few data on its implementation among adolescents. We aimed to investigate the safety, feasibility, and acceptability of PrEP with oral tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine as part of a comprehensive HIV prevention package in an adolescent population in South Africa. METHODS This open-label single-arm phase 2 study (PlusPills) was done in two research clinics in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa. Adolescents aged 15-19 years were recruited into the study through recruitment events and outreach in the community. Potential participants were eligible for enrolment if they reported being sexually active. Exclusion criteria were a positive test for HIV or pregnancy at enrolment, breastfeeding, or any relevant co-morbidities. Participants were given oral tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine for PrEP to take daily for the first 12 weeks and were then given the choice to opt in or out of PrEP use at three monthly intervals during scheduled clinic visits. Participants were invited to monthly visits for adherence counselling and HIV testing during the study period. The primary outcomes were acceptability, use, and safety of PrEP. Acceptability was measured by the proportion of participants who reported willingness to take up PrEP and remain on PrEP at each study timepoint. Use was defined as the number of participants who continued to use PrEP after the initial 12-week period until the end of the study (week 48). Safety was measured by grade 2, 3, and 4 laboratory and clinical adverse events using the Division of AIDS table for grading the severity of adult and paediatric adverse events, version 1.0. Dried blood spot samples were collected at each study time-point to measure tenofovir diphosphate concentrations. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02213328. FINDINGS Between April 28, 2015, and Nov 11, 2016, 244 participants were screened, and 148 participants were enrolled (median age was 18 years; 99 participants [67%] were female) and initiated PrEP. PrEP was stopped by 26 of the 148 (18%) participants at 12 weeks. Cumulative PrEP opt-out, from the total cohort, was 41% (60 of 148 participants) at week 24 and 43% (63 of 148 participants) at week 36. PrEP was well tolerated with only minor adverse events (grade 2) thought to be related to study drug, which included headache (n=4, 3%), gastrointestinal upset (n=8, 5%), and skin rash (n=2, 1%). Two participants (1%) experienced grade 3 weight loss, which was deemed related to the study drug and resolved fully when PrEP was discontinued. Tenofovir diphosphate concentrations were detectable (>16 fmol/punch) in dried blood spot samples in 108 (92%) of 118 participants who reported PrEP use at week 12, in 74 (74%) of 100 participants at week 24, and in 22 (59%) of 37 participants by the study end at week 48. INTERPRETATION In this cohort of self-selected South African adolescents at risk of HIV acquisition, PrEP appears safe and tolerable in those who continued use. PrEP use decreased throughout the course of the study as the number of planned study visits declined. Adolescents in southern Africa needs access to PrEP with tailored adherence support and possibly the option for more frequent and flexible visit schedules. Abstract
Host plant volatiles play a key role in mediating plant-herbivore interactions. How an array of host plant volatiles guides host preference and attraction in the invasive polyphagous Lycorma delicatula (White), the spotted lanternfly (SLF), is largely unknown. A pernicious phloem feeder, SLF feeds on over 70 species of plants, some with high economic impact. To aid the development of detection and monitoring tools for SLF, we used a two-choice olfactometer to compare 14 host plant species for attraction, first to a blank control, and then to their preferred host Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle (Sapindales: Simaroubaceae), tree-of-heaven. SLF were significantly attracted to seven host plants compared to a blank control, but no host plant was more attractive than tree-of-heaven. We then used electroantennographic detection (EAD) to screen select host plants for EAD active compounds, hypothesizing that EAD-active plant volatiles act as kairomones and mediate SLF attraction to host plants. Out of 43 unique antennal responses, 18 compounds were identified and tested individually for attraction in a two-choice olfactometer against a blank control and then against methyl salicylate, the current best attractant. Eleven compounds were significantly attractive, and one, sulcatone, was more attractive than methyl salicylate. Blends of kairomones were then tested for attraction, revealing five blends that were significantly more attractive than methyl salicylate, and could be developed into lures for field testing. The presence of these kairomones in volatile profiles of 17 plant species is described. These findings support the hypothesis that the identified volatiles act as kairomones and function in attraction to host plants.

Abstract
The titratable acidity, alkalinity, and carboxylate content are fundamental properties required for the understanding of aqueous chemical systems. Here, we present a set of new methods that allow these properties to be determined directly by 1H NMR without the labor, cost, and sample quantity associated with running separate potentiometric or conductometric titrations. Our methods require only the measurement of the pH-sensitive 1H chemical shifts of indicator molecules and do not require the tedious titration of reagents into a sample. To determine the titratable acidity, an excess of 2-methylimidazole (2MI) is added to a sample and the quantity of protons absorbed by 2MI is determined from its 1H chemical shifts. The titratable alkalinity of a sample can be similarly determined using acetic acid. To determine the concentration of deprotonated carboxylates, a sample is acidified with HCl, and the quantity of H+ absorbed is determined from the 1H chemical shift of methylphosphonic acid. We validate our methods by demonstrating the measurement of the acidity of fruit-flavored drinks, the alkalinity of tap water, and the carboxylate content of nanocellulose dispersions.

Abstract
Immunotherapy checkpoint inhibitors, such as antibodies targeting PD-1 and CTLA-4, have demonstrated the potential of harnessing the immune system to treat cancer. However, despite encouraging results particularly with respect to survival, only a minority of patients benefit from these therapies. In clinical studies aimed at understanding changes in the immune system following immunotherapy treatment, ICOS (Inducible T cell CO-Stimulator) was shown to be significantly up-regulated on CD4+ T cells and this was associated with clinical activity, indicating that ICOS stimulatory activity may be beneficial in the treatment of solid tumors. In this report, we describe the generation of specific, species cross-reactive, agonist antibodies to ICOS, including the humanized clinical candidate, JTX-2011 (vopratelimab). Preclinical studies suggest that the ICOS stimulating antibodies require Fc receptor cross-linking for optimal agonistic activity. Notably, the ICOS antibodies do not exhibit superagonist properties but rather require T cell receptor (TCR)-mediated upregulation of ICOS for agonist activity. Treatment with the ICOS antibodies results in robust anti-tumor benefit and long-term protection in preclinical syngeneic mouse tumor models. Additional benefit is observed when the ICOS antibodies are administered in combination with anti-PD-1 and anti-CTLA-4 therapies. Based on the preclinical data, JTX-2011 is currently being developed in the clinical setting for the treatment of solid tumors.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
University education in Australia and internationally involves teaching diverse students: in terms of age, life experience, previous degrees completed, and level of English competency. In Australia the Bachelors of Public Health (BPH) at The University of Wollongong, epidemiology is a core subject. It aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to design, critique and interpret studies that investigate why different populations experience different health outcomes. A student-centred learning strategy; Hybrid Team Based Learning and Personalised Education teaching strategy (HTBL-PE) was created to maximise academic success. Each phase has a distinct purpose based on learning theories (e.g. TBL, Bloom's taxonomy and Vygotsky). HTBL-PE aims to systematically build students abilities; strengthen self-confidence and belief, by teaching the way students learn and harnessing the capabilities of the team to strengthen the individual.
Objectives
HTBL-PE was evaluated in spring 2019 in the BPH, where their experiences at the beginning and end of semester were measured.
Results
In total 73 out of 84 enrolled students provided data at both time-points (87%). At the end of the semester, the vast majority of students indicated their interest in epidemiology had increased (93%), critical thinking had improved (92%), and confidence as independent learners had increased (86%). Outcomes did not differ significantly by gender or across learning styles. More than two thirds of students had already applied learnings from this subject in other settings (67%). Students' final mark for this subject was significantly higher than their Weighted Average Mark (WAM) prior to the semester (+17.4, p < 0.001). Average scores for the subject were > 84/100 with a < 0.5% failure rate.
Conclusions
HTBL-PE has positive learning outcomes; low failure rates, increased confidence in learning and themselves, increased interest in epidemiology and high overall scores in the subject.
Key messages
An effective new innovative teaching strategy resulted in a subject average score > 84/100 and <0.5% failure rate. The vast majority of students reported increased confidence as independent lifelong learners, critical thinking, confidence in epidemiology (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) and themselves.

Abstract
In this work, self-assembled amino-acid appended perylene bisimides (PBIs) have been studied that when processed into thin films change their resistivity in response to being bent. The PBIs assemble into structures in water and form thin films upon drying. These normally delicate thin films can be tolerant to bending, depending on the aggregates they form. Furthermore, the films then reversibly change their resistivity in response to this mechanical stimulus. This change is proportional to the degree of bending of the film giving them the potential to be used quantitatively to measure mechanical movement, such as in wearable devices.

Introduction
While sleep disturbances and depression often co-occur, these associations are understudied among Hispanics/Latinos. We examined the associations of sleep disturbances and sleep burden with depressive symptoms among Hispanic/Latino adults in the United States.
Methods
We used cross-sectional data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Sueño Ancillary study (2010-2013). The study enrolled 2072 adults (ages 18-64; 51.5% females) who completed one-week wrist-actigraphy and sleep questionnaires. Sleep burden was operationalized as the total count of sleep disturbances across six domains (duration, efficiency, midpoint, variability, insomnia, sleepiness). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale (CESD-10). We used weighted survey linear regressions to evaluate the association of sleep disturbances and sleep burden with elevated depressive symptoms (CESD≥10) in individual models adjusted for age, gender, site, heritage, nativity, education, income, and employment. Sensitivity analyses further adjusted for behavioral health risk factors and apnea-hypopnea index.
Results
An estimated 28.3% had elevated depressive symptoms, 8.0% had short sleep duration (<6 hours of sleep), 10.9% had long sleep duration (>9 hours), 45.2% exhibited a later sleep midpoint (≥4:00AM), 38.4% had high sleep timing variability (upper third tertile for between day sleep midpoint), 15.3% had insomnia (ISI≥10), 17.3% had excessive daytime sleepiness (ESS ≥10), 21.5% had poor sleep efficiency (<85%), and 77.4% had a total sleep burden count of ≥0. Insomnia (ß=0.49,95%CI:.43,.56), later sleep timing (ß=0.10,95%CI:.04,.16), excessive daytime sleepiness (ß=0.19,95%CI:.11,.27), poor sleep efficiency (ß=0.09,95%CI:.02,.17), high variability (ß=0.07, 95%CI:.01,.12), and sleep burden (ß=0.11,95%CI:.09,.13), were each positively associated with elevated depressive symptoms in individual adjusted models and sensitivity analyses. Extreme sleep durations were not associated with elevated depressive symptoms.
Conclusion
Multiple inter-related sleep disturbances, particularly those pertaining to sleep quality and timing, are associated with depression and may be targets for future interventions aimed at improving mood among Hispanics/Latinos.

Introduction
Paradigm shifts in sleep research suggest the importance of considering multi-dimensional sleep health, compared to single metrics, to promote physical and mental well-being and to understand racial/ethnic disparities in sleep.
Methods
We used data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA; n = 1,740) to create a Sleep Health Score (SHS), including questionnaire (quality, sleepiness); 7-day actigraphy (total sleep time, sleep continuity [sleep maintenance efficiency], timing consistency [midpoint variability], fragmentation, wake after sleep onset, sleep onset latency); and in-home polysomnography (%N3 sleep, %REM sleep, AHI). Sleep parameters were dichotomized based on prior literature or by healthiest quartile(s), with positive values denoting healthier sleep (e.g. Epworth scores < 10). All 11 dichotomized parameters were summed to calculate the SHS (mean=4.9, sd=1.58). We used modified Poisson and linear regression for individual sleep outcomes and the SHS, respectively, adjusting for age and sex.
Results
The sample was older (mean age=68.28, sd=9.08) and 54% female. SHSs were associated with Black race (β=-0.60 [-0.78, -0.42]) and Hispanic ethnicity (β=-0.40 [-0.59, -0.21]), but not Chinese ethnicity (β=-0.16 [-0.41, 0.08]). Compared to Whites (n=644), Blacks (n=485) showed lower adjusted probability of obtaining favorable levels of: sleep continuity, fragmentation, timing consistency, alertness/sleepiness, and sleep depth (%N3 sleep). Chinese respondents (n=202) had lower probability of obtaining favorable levels of: sleep continuity and timing consistency, but higher probability of quality. Hispanics (n=409) had lower probability of obtaining healthy levels of: sleep continuity, timing consistency, and fragmentation. Neither healthy total sleep time (middle quartiles) nor AHI (<30) differed by race/ethnicity.
Conclusion
Among MESA-Sleep participants, summary SHSs were lowest in Blacks, followed by Hispanics. Multiple dimensions of sleep - particularly related to continuity and timing consistency - were less favorable across race/ethnic minority groups. A summary SHS may help monitor sleep health across populations, while measurement of specific sleep components may help identify modifiable targets.

Abstract
An analytical method for the determination of tilmicosin at 200–400 mg/kg, the intended use concentration range, was evaluated in an interlaboratory study involving 5 laboratories, including the sponsor. The interlaboratory study evaluated the intra- and interlaboratory precision and accuracy of a tilmicosin feed method. The method procedure involved extracting tilmicosin from feed by adding 200 mL extractant to 20 g feed and shaking for 1 h. The extract is filtered and analyzed by gradient liquid chromatography which separates tilmicosin from feed matrix in 30 min. Each laboratory assayed 5 replicates of fortified feed at concentrations of 0,100, 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg. The mean recovery among fortified samples ranged from 81.4 to 98.8%, with a percent coefficient of variation (%CV) ranging from 0.3 to 4.0%. For all blank control feed samples no significant interferences were observed. In addition, each laboratory assayed 5 replicates of medicated feed samples prepared at 2 levels (200 and 400 mg/kg) with either a horizontal or vertical mixer. Along with the medicated feed samples were included 5 replicates of a blank control feed. The identities of the medicated and blank control feed samples were blinded to the analysts. The results for the medicated feed samples ranged from 95.8 to 106% of label claim, with a %CV ranging from 2.1 to 6.7%.

Ethoxyquin is a chemical antioxidant used in feeds, ingredients, fats, and oils. A liquid chromatographic (LC) method for determination of ethoxyquin was developed. The method involves acetonitrile extraction of the sample and isocratic Cis reversed-phase chromatography with ammonium acetate buffer-acetonitrile as mobile phase and fluorescence detection. A collaborative study of the determination of ethoxyquin in various meals and extruded pet foods was conducted by The lams Company Research Laboratory. Eleven laboratories analyzed 16 samples (including 2 blind duplicates) consisting of 7 meat meals and 9 extruded pet foods. Sample means ranged from 0.25 to 289 ppm. Repeatability standard deviations ranged from 0.08 to 3.2 ppm, and repeatability relative standard deviations ranged from 4.5 to 32%. Reproducibility standard deviations ranged from 0.12 to 13 ppm, and reproducibility relative standard deviations ranged from 4.5 to 55%. The LC method for determination of ethoxyquin in feeds has been adopted first action by AOAC INTERNATIONAL.

Abstract
AIM To review the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of spindle cell lipoma (SCL) with emphasis on the location of these tumours and the spectrum of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) appearances. MATERIALS AND METHODS The MRI and CT findings of 27 histopathologically proven SCLs were evaluated retrospectively. Imaging features evaluated included margins, percentage visible fat, MRI signal characteristics, oedema, and contrast enhancement patterns. RESULTS Patient ages ranged from 18 to 80 years with an average age of 56.5 years. Men were affected twice as frequently as women (M=18, F=9). SCLs ranged in size from 2 to 10 cm, with an average greatest dimension of 5.5 cm. Five lesions (19%) contained no visible fat on CT or MRI, and the leading differential diagnosis of high-grade soft-tissue sarcoma diagnosis was suggested by referring surgeons. Five lesions (19%) had <50% fatty areas, nine lesions (52%) demonstrated >50% but <90% fat at MRI or CT. Only three of 25 lesions (12%) had an appearance of a typical lipoma on unenhanced MRI sequences. All SCLs that were imaged with contrast medium (n = 18) demonstrated some degree of enhancement, with eight (44%) showing marked enhancement, four (22%) showing moderate, and six (33%) minimal enhancement. CONCLUSION SCLs have considerably variable imaging appearances and may have minimal or no visible fat at MRI or CT. Imaging features may make it difficult to distinguish this benign tumour from a potentially higher-grade malignant tumour.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In France, second generation men of South-European origin were recently found to experience a mortality advantage, as opposed to second generation men of North-African origin, subjected to a large amount of excess mortality. We analyze the roles of education and labor force participation in the explanation of these contrasting mortality patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS Our data consisted of a nationally-representative sample of individuals aged 18-64 years derived from the 1999 census, with mortality follow-up until 2010. RESULTS The two groups of second generation men, and particularly those of North-African origin, were less educated than the native-origin population, but only the latter was disadvantaged in terms of labor force participation. Relative to the native-origin population, the mortality hazard ratio for second generation men of North-African origin (HR = 1.71 [1.09-2.70]) remained significant after adjusting for level of educational attainment (HR = 1.59 [1.01-2.50]), but not after adjusting for economic activity (HR = 1.20 [0.76-1.89]) or for both variables (1.16 [0.74-1.83]). Conversely, the mortality hazard ratio for second generation men of South-European origin (HR = 0.64 [0.46-0.90]) remained unchanged after adjustment for level of educational attainment and/or economic activity. CONCLUSION The findings shed light on the salient role of labor market disadvantage in the explanation of the mortality excess of second generation men of North-African origin in France, and on the favorable situation of second-generation men of South-European origin in terms of labour market position and mortality. The theoretical and policy implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract
Despite greater mental health co-morbidities and heavier alcohol use among PLWH, few studies have examined the role of the neighborhood alcohol environment on either alcohol consumption or mental health. Utilizing cross-sectional data from a cohort study in a southern U.S. metropolitan area, we examine the association between neighborhood alcohol environments on hazardous drinking and mental health among 358 in-care PLWH (84% African American, 31% female). Multilevel models were utilized to quantify associations between neighborhood alcohol exposure on hazardous drinking and effect modification by sex. Neighborhood alcohol density was associated with hazardous drinking among men but not women. Women living in alcohol dense neighborhoods were nearly two-fold likely to report depression compared to those in less dense neighborhoods, with no association between neighborhood alcohol density and depression among men. Neighborhood alcohol environments may be an important contextual factor to consider in reducing heavy alcohol consumption and improving mental health among PLWH.

Abstract
A method for the direct measurement of free Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations in the range of 1-100 mM by NMR spectroscopy is demonstrated. The method automatically corrects for the effect of ionic strength on the activity of the species in solution and works satisfactorily even when significant concentrations of competitive ions are present. The method requires only the measurement of the 1H chemical shifts of our reporter ligands, glycolate and sulfoacetate, and is easily implemented using NMR imaging techniques. As a proof of concept, we extract the thermodynamic binding constants and conformer distributions of analyte ligands using an in situ ion gradient. Existing approaches for the measurement of free Ca2+ or Mg2+ concentrations by NMR operate only at very low ion concentrations or else require careful recalibration for different sample conditions. By providing the free Ca2+ or Mg2+ concentrations, the proposed methodology significantly enhances the information obtainable via NMR investigations of ion-responsive systems.

Abstract
Background: Vitamin D deficiency is fast emerging as a global pandemic. In South Africa few studies have been conducted to determine the vitamin D status of the healthy population.Methods: This prospective study with an analytical component investigated vitamin D status of healthy undergraduate students at two time points (winter and summer) at Stellenbosch University. Serum 25(OH)D was determined, anthropometric measurements taken and dietary vitamin D intake estimated (food-frequency questionnaire). Skin tone was determined (Fitzpatrick skin type classification), and a skin reflectometry device used to measure dermal melanin content.Results: Results of 242 students indicated a mean serum 25(OH)D of 63.80 ± 41.35 ng/ml and a high prevalence of vitamin D sufficiency (88%). Significantly more females experienced suboptimal vitamin D levels than males (18 vs. 5%; p 0.01). Participants with lighter skin tones had higher levels of 25(OH)D than those with darker skin tones (chi-square = 24.02; p = 0.02). The majority (60.74%) had a normal BMI, although there was no significant relationship between BMI and serum 25 (OH)D (Spearman’s r=–0.11; p = 0.09). Total mean dietary vitamin D intake was 7.99 ± 13.81 mcg, with 87.2% having inadequate intake ( 15 mcg). The relationship between total vitamin D intake and serum 25(OH)D was found to be significant in winter (p 0.001) and summer (p = 0.01). Serum vitamin D levels were significantly higher in the winter phase (p 0.001).Conclusions: A low prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was found amongst healthy young adults, despite low dietary vitamin D intakes. Significant relationships were found between serum 25(OH)D and gender, skin tone and vitamin D intake. Further studies need to be conducted, especially in high-risk groups, before results are applied to the greater South African public.

Abstract
We use a combination of computational and experimental techniques to study the self-assembly and gelation of water-soluble perylene bisimides derivatised at the imide position with an amino acid. Specifically, we study the likely structure of self-assembled aggregates of the alanine-functionalised perylene bisimide (PBI-A) and the thermodynamics of their formation using density functional theory and predict the UV-vis spectra of such aggregates using time-dependent density functional theory. We compare these predictions to experiments in which we study the evolution of the UV-Vis and NMR spectra and the rheology and neutron scattering of alkaline PBI-A solutions when gradually decreasing the pH. Based on the combined computational and experimental results, we show that PBI-A self-assembles at all pH values but that aggregates grow in size upon protonation. Hydrogel formation is driven not by aggregate growth but reduction of the aggregation surface-charge and a decrease in the colloidal stability of the aggregation with respect to agglomeration.
