Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performances of 8 different imaging modalities for preoperative detection of bone metastases in prostate cancer patients by performing a network meta-analysis using direct comparison studies with 2 or more imaging techniques. PATIENTS AND METHODS We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library for studies evaluating the performances of 8 different imaging modalities for the preoperative detection of bone metastases in prostate cancer patients. The network meta-analysis was performed in patient-based analysis. The consistency was evaluated by examining the agreement between direct and indirect treatment effects, and the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) values were obtained to calculate the probability of each imaging modality being the most effective diagnostic method. RESULTS A total of 999 patients from 13 direct comparison studies using 8 different imaging modalities for preoperative detection or follow-up of bone metastases in prostate cancer patients were included. For the detection of bone metastases of prostate cancer, 68 Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT showed the highest SUCRA values of sensitivity, positive predictive value, accuracy, and diagnostic odds ratio. In addition, 18 F-NaF PET/CT and SPECT/CT showed high SUCRA values. CONCLUSIONS 68 Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT showed the highest SUCRA values. Other imaging modalities showed complementary diagnostic roles for preoperative detection of bone metastases in patients with prostate cancer, except bone scintigraphy and MRI.

Abstract
The progression of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is diverse and unpredictable. We identified and validated a new biomarker for IPF progression. To identify a candidate gene to predict progression, we assessed differentially expressed genes in patients with advanced IPF compared with early IPF and controls in three lung sample cohorts. Candidate gene expression was confirmed using immunohistochemistry and Western blotting of lung tissue samples from an independent IPF clinical cohort. Biomarker potential was assessed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of serum samples from the retrospective validation cohort. We verified that the final candidate gene reflected the progression of IPF in a prospective validation cohort. In the RNA-seq comparative analysis of lung tissues, CD276, COL7A1, CTSB, GLI2, PIK3R2, PRAF2, IGF2BP3, and NUPR1 were up-regulated, and ADAMTS8 was down-regulated in the samples of advanced IPF. Only CTSB showed significant differences in expression based on Western blotting (n = 12; p < 0.001) and immunohistochemistry between the three groups of the independent IPF cohort. In the retrospective validation cohort (n = 78), serum CTSB levels were higher in the progressive group (n = 25) than in the control (n = 29, mean 7.37 ng/mL vs. 2.70 ng/mL, p < 0.001) and nonprogressive groups (n = 24, mean 7.37 ng/mL vs. 2.56 ng/mL, p < 0.001). In the prospective validation cohort (n = 129), serum CTSB levels were higher in the progressive group than in the nonprogressive group (mean 8.30 ng/mL vs. 3.00 ng/mL, p < 0.001). After adjusting for baseline FVC, we found that CTSB was independently associated with IPF progression (adjusted OR = 2.61, p < 0.001). Serum CTSB levels significantly predicted IPF progression (AUC = 0.944, p < 0.001). Serum CTSB level significantly distinguished the progression of IPF from the non-progression of IPF or healthy control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Despite advances in the maintenance of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs), the patency rates remain suboptimal. Most AVFs fail due to outflow vein stenosis; however, the underlying mechanism of AVF stenosis remains unclear. The present study aimed to identify key factors associated with AVF outflow stenosis. METHODS We obtained gene expression profiling data for the outflow vein of AVF from three Gene Expression Omnibus database datasets (GSE39488, GSE97377, and GSE116268) and analyzed the common differentially expressed genes (DEGs). We evaluated a common DEG in an aortocaval mouse model and the stenotic outflow veins of AVFs collected from patients. Furthermore, we isolated vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) from the inferior vena cava (IVC) of wild-type (WT) and osteopontin (Opn)-knockout (KO) mice and assessed the proliferation of VSMCs following stimulation with platelet-derived growth factors (PDGFs). RESULTS OPN was the only common upregulated DEG among all datasets. OPN was expressed in the medial layer of the outflow vein of AVF in aortocaval mouse models and co-stained with the VSMC marker (α-smooth muscle actin). OPN expression was markedly increased in the VSMCs of stenotic outflow veins of AVF collected from patients undergoing hemodialysis compared to presurgical veins acquired during AVF formation surgery. PDGF-induced VSMC proliferation was significantly increased in the VSMCs isolated from the IVC of WT mice but not in those isolated from the IVC of Opn-KO mice. CONCLUSIONS OPN may be a key gene involved in VSMC proliferation in the AVF outflow veins and a therapeutic target to improve the AVF patency rate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The demand for lung transplants continues to increase in Korea, and donor shortages and waitlist mortality are critical issues. This study aimed to evaluate the factors that affect waitlist outcomes from the time of registration for lung transplantation in Korea. METHODS Data were obtained from the Korean Network for Organ Sharing for lung-only registrations between September 7, 2009, and December 31, 2020. Post-registration outcomes were evaluated according to the lung disease category, blood group, and age. RESULTS Among the 1,671 registered patients, 49.1% had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (group C), 37.0% had acute respiratory distress syndrome and other interstitial lung diseases (group D), 7.2% had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (group A), and 6.6% had primary pulmonary hypertension (group B). Approximately half of the patients (46.1%) were transplanted within 1 year of registration, while 31.8% died without receiving a lung transplant within 1 year of registration. Data from 1,611 patients were used to analyze 1-year post-registration outcomes, which were classified as transplanted (46.1%, n = 743), still awaiting (21.1%, n = 340), removed (0.9%, n = 15), and death on waitlist (31.8%, n = 513). No significant difference was found in the transplantation rate according to the year of registration. However, significant differences occurred between the waitlist mortality rates (P = 0.008) and the still awaiting rates (P = 0.009). The chance of transplantation after listing varies depending on the disease category, blood type, age, and urgency status. Waitlist mortality within 1 year was significantly associated with non-group A disease (hazard ratio [HR], 2.76, P < 0.001), age ≥ 65 years (HR, 1.48, P < 0.001), and status 0 at registration (HR, 2.10, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Waitlist mortality is still higher in Korea than in other countries. Future revisions to the lung allocation system should take into consideration the high waitlist mortality and donor shortages.

Abstract
In recent decades, the possibility that use of mobile communicating devices, particularly wireless (mobile and cordless) phones, may increase brain tumour risk, has been a concern, particularly given the considerable increase in their use by young people. MOBI-Kids, a 14-country (Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain) case-control study, was conducted to evaluate whether wireless phone use (and particularly resulting exposure to radiofrequency (RF) and extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields (EMF)) increases risk of brain tumours in young people. Between 2010 and 2015, the study recruited 899 people with brain tumours aged 10 to 24 years old and 1,910 controls (operated for appendicitis) matched to the cases on date of diagnosis, study region and age. Participation rates were 72% for cases and 54% for controls. The mean ages of cases and controls were 16.5 and 16.6 years, respectively; 57% were males. The vast majority of study participants were wireless phones users, even in the youngest age group, and the study included substantial numbers of long-term (over 10 years) users: 22% overall, 51% in the 20-24-year-olds. Most tumours were of the neuroepithelial type (NBT; n = 671), mainly glioma. The odds ratios (OR) of NBT appeared to decrease with increasing time since start of use of wireless phones, cumulative number of calls and cumulative call time, particularly in the 15-19 years old age group. A decreasing trend in ORs was also observed with increasing estimated cumulative RF specific energy and ELF induced current density at the location of the tumour. Further analyses suggest that the large number of ORs below 1 in this study is unlikely to represent an unknown causal preventive effect of mobile phone exposure: they can be at least partially explained by differential recall by proxies and prodromal symptoms affecting phone use before diagnosis of the cases. We cannot rule out, however, residual confounding from sources we did not measure. Overall, our study provides no evidence of a causal association between wireless phone use and brain tumours in young people. However, the sources of bias summarised above prevent us from ruling out a small increased risk.

Abstract
Glioma is the most common primary malignant tumor that occurs in the central nervous system. Gliomas are subdivided according to a combination of microscopic morphological, molecular, and genetic factors. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive malignant tumor; however, efficient therapies or specific target molecules for GBM have not been developed. We accessed RNA-seq and clinical data from The Cancer Genome Atlas, the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas, and the GSE16011 dataset, and identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that were common to both GBM and lower-grade glioma (LGG) in three independent cohorts. The biological functions of common DEGs were examined using NetworkAnalyst. To evaluate the prognostic performance of common DEGs, we performed Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. We investigated the function of SOCS3 in the central nervous system using three GBM cell lines as well as zebrafish embryos. There were 168 upregulated genes and 50 downregulated genes that were commom to both GBM and LGG. Through survival analyses, we found that SOCS3 was the only prognostic gene in all cohorts. Inhibition of SOCS3 using siRNA decreased the proliferation of GBM cell lines. We also found that the zebrafish ortholog, socs3b, was associated with brain development through the regulation of cell proliferation in neuronal tissue. While additional mechanistic studies are necessary, our results suggest that SOCS3 is an important biomarker for glioma and that SOCS3 is related to the proliferation of neuronal tissue.

Abstract
The tumor microenvironment (TME) within mucosal neoplastic tissue in oral cancer (ORCA) is greatly influenced by tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). Here, a clustering method was performed using CIBERSORT profiles of ORCA data that were filtered from the publicly accessible data of patients with head and neck cancer in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) using hierarchical clustering where patients were regrouped into binary risk groups based on the clustering-measuring scores and survival patterns associated with individual groups. Based on this analysis, clinically reasonable differences were identified in 16 out of 22 TIL fractions between groups. A deep neural network classifier was trained using the TIL fraction patterns. This internally validated classifier was used on another individual ORCA dataset from the International Cancer Genome Consortium data portal, and patient survival patterns were precisely predicted. Seven common differentially expressed genes between the two risk groups were obtained. This new approach confirms the importance of TILs in the TME and provides a direction for the use of a novel deep-learning approach for cancer prognosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It is well known that the presence of diabetes significantly affects the progression of periodontitis and that periodontitis has negative effects on diabetes and diabetes-related complications. Although this two-way relationship between type 2 diabetes and periodontitis could be understood through experimental and clinical studies, information on common genetic factors would be more useful for the understanding of both diseases and the development of treatment strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS Gene expression data for periodontitis and type 2 diabetes were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. After preprocessing of data to reduce heterogeneity, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between disease and normal tissue were identified using a linear regression model package. Gene ontology and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genome pathway enrichment analyses were conducted using R package 'vsn'. A protein-protein interaction network was constructed using the search tool for the retrieval of the interacting genes database. We used molecular complex detection for optimal module selection. CytoHubba was used to identify the highest linkage hub gene in the network. RESULTS We identified 152 commonly DEGs, including 125 upregulated and 27 downregulated genes. Through common DEGs, we constructed a protein-protein interaction and identified highly connected hub genes. The hub genes were up-regulated in both diseases and were most significantly enriched in the Fc gamma R-mediated phagocytosis pathway. DISCUSSION We have identified three up-regulated genes involved in Fc gamma receptor-mediated phagocytosis, and these genes could be potential therapeutic targets in patients with periodontitis and type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Since pathways involving LRRC17 are related to the survival of patients with various cancers, we analyzed LRRC17 as a prognostic gene in serous ovarian cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data were collected from Gene Expression Omnibus (GSE9891, GSE13876, and GSE26712) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We performed survival analyses using C statistics, area under the curve, survival plot with optimal cutoff level, and cox proportional regression. Zebrafish embryos were used as an in vivo model. RESULTS The prognosis of patients with high LRRC17 expression was poorer than that of patients with low LRRC17 expression. Multivariate regression analysis showed that LRRC17 expression, age, and stage were independently related with survival. Knockdown of lrrc17 reduced survival rate and delayed development in zebrafish embryos. We also found that lrrc17 is important for cell viability by protecting from p53-dependent apoptosis. CONCLUSION LRRC17 could be a prognostic gene in ovarian cancer as it regulates cancer cell viability through the p53 pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the prevention of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) catheter-related infection is crucial, scientific evidence regarding best practices are still lacking. METHODS We conducted an uncontrolled before-and-after study to test whether the introduction of disinfection with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) of the exposed circuits and hub in patients treated with ECMO would affect the rate of blood stream infection (BSI) and microbial colonization of the ECMO catheter. We compared the microbiological and clinical data before and after the intervention. RESULTS A total of 1740 ECMO catheter days in 192 patients were studied. These were divided into 855 ECMO catheter days in 96 patients before and 885 ECMO catheter days in 96 patients during the intervention. The rates of BSI were significantly decreased during the intervention period at 11.7/1000 ECMO catheter days before vs. 2.3/1000 ECMO catheter days during (difference 9.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.5-17.3, p = 0.019). Furthermore, the colonization of the ECMO catheter was similarly significantly reduced during the intervention period at 10.5/1000 ECMO catheter days before vs. 2.3/1000 ECMO catheter days during intervention (difference 8.3, 95% CI 0.7-15.8, p = 0.032). Hospital mortality (41.7% vs. 24%, p = 0.009) and sepsis-related death (17.7% vs. 6.3%, p = 0.014) were also significantly decreased during intervention. CONCLUSION Extensive disinfection of exposed ECMO circuits and hub with 2% CHG/IPA was associated with a reduction in both BSI and microbial colonization of ECMO catheters. A further randomized controlled study is required to verify these results. TRIAL REGISTRATION KCT 0004431.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer. However, effective therapeutics for ccRCC are lacking. Novel biomarkers could provide critical information when determining prognoses for patients with ccRCC. In this study, we sought to determine if the expression of receptor tyrosine kinase (TEK) could be a potential novel prognostic biomarker for ccRCC. TEK, originally identified as an endothelial cell-specific receptor, plays an important role in the modulation of vasculogenesis and remodeling. Altered TEK expression has been observed in tumor tissues (e.g., oral squamous cell carcinomas, leukemia) and breast, gastric and thyroid cancers. However, the role of TEK in ccRCC remains unknown. PATIENTS AND METHODS Differential TEK expression between non-metastatic (stage M0) and metastatic (stage M1) ccRCC patient cohorts was determined from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC). Furthermore, TEK expression was assessed as a prognostic factor using the time-dependent area under the curve (AUC) of Uno's C-index, the AUC value of the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) at 5 years, Kaplan-Meier survival curves and multivariate analyses. RESULTS A Kaplan-Meier curve analysis revealed that the downregulation of TEK expression was associated with a poor prognosis for patients with ccRCC with good discrimination (p<0.0001 and p=0.0044 for the TGCA and ICGC cohorts, respectively). Analyses of C-indices and receiver operating characteristic AUC values further support this discriminative ability. Moreover, multivariate analyses showed the prognostic significance of TEK expression levels (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Although additional clinical investigations will be needed, our results suggest that TEK is a potential biomarker for ccRCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Because 50% of uveal melanoma metastasize within 10 years of diagnosis, there is urgent need for accurate prognostic factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS To identify genes that can act as prognostic factors in uveal melanoma, we performed survival analyses using three independent cohorts. Using log-rank test and univariate cox regression, genes which could stratify the prognosis in all cohorts simultaneously depending on their expression levels were selected as novel biomarkers. Hub genes were obtained by analyzing the interaction and relationship between the selected genes using String and Cytoscape. Additionally, prognostic power was calculated by using C-indices and AUC. RESULTS A total of 37 oncogene-like and 14 tumor suppressor-like genes were selected. Protein-protein analysis revealed that NDUFB9, NDUFV2, CYC1 among oncogene-like genes, CTNNB1 among tumor suppressor-like genes were found to be hub genes and core biomarkers in uveal melanoma. CONCLUSION NDUFB9, NDUFV2, CYC1 and CTNNB1 genes may act as prognostic factors in uveal melanoma.

Abstract
Relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is dangerous and it worsens the prognosis of patients; however, prognostic markers or therapeutic targets for ALL remain unknown. In the present study, using databases such as TARGET, GSE60926 and GSE28460, we determined that KIF2C and its binding partner, KIF18B are overexpressed in patients with relapsed ALL compared to that in patients diagnosed with ALL for the first time. As 50% of the residues are exactly the same and the signature domain of KIF2C is highly conserved between human and zebrafish, we used zebrafish embryos as a model to investigate the function of kif2c in vivo. We determined that kif2c is necessary for lymphopoiesis in zebrafish embryos. Additionally, we observed that kif2c is not related to differentiation of HSCs; however, it is important for the maintenance of HSCs as it provides survival signals to HSCs. These results imply that the ALL relapse-related gene KIF2C is linked to the survival of HSCs. In conclusion, we suggest that KIF2C can serve as a novel therapeutic target for relapsed ALL.

Abstract
A pivotal aim of psychiatric and neurological research is to promote the translation of the findings into clinical practice to improve diagnostic and prognostic assessment of individual patients. Structural neuroimaging holds much promise, with neuroanatomical measures accounting for up to 40% of the variance in clinical outcome. Building on these findings, a number of imaging-based clinical tools have been developed to make diagnostic and prognostic inferences about individual patients from their structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans. This systematic review describes and compares the technical characteristics of the available tools, with the aim to assess their translational potential into real-world clinical settings. The results reveal that a total of eight tools. All of these were specifically developed for neurological disorders, and as such are not suitable for application to psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, most of the tools were trained and validated in a single dataset, which can result in poor generalizability, or using a small number of individuals, which can cause overoptimistic results. In addition, all of the tools rely on two strategies to detect brain abnormalities in single individuals, one based on univariate comparison, and the other based on multivariate machine-learning algorithms. We discuss current barriers to the adoption of these tools in clinical practice and propose a checklist of pivotal characteristics that should be included in an "ideal" neuroimaging-based clinical tool for brain disorders.

Abstract
Accurate prediction of malignancies is important in choosing therapeutic strategies. Although there are many genetic and cytogenetic prognostic factors for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), prognosis is difficult to predict because of the heterogeneity of AML. Prognostic factors, including messenger RNA (mRNA) expression, have been determined for other malignancies, but not for AML. A total of 402 patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas, GSE12417 (GPL96, 97), and GSE12417 (GPL570) were included in this study. In Kaplan-Meier curve analyses, high expression of family with sequence similarity 213 member A (FAM213A), which activates antioxidant proteins, was associated with worse prognosis of AML. Similar to the results of the survival curve, C-indices and area under the curve values were high. Current prognostic factors of AML, unlike those of other cancers, do not take mRNA expression into consideration. Thus, the development of mRNA-based prognostic factors would be beneficial for accurate prediction of the survival of AML patients. Additionally, in vivo validation using zebrafish revealed that fam213a is important for myelopoiesis at the developmental stage and is a negative regulator of the p53 tumor suppressor gene. The findings implicate fam213a as a novel prognostic factor for AML patients.

Abstract
Introduction: The zinc finger homeobox 4 (ZFHX4) protein is a crucial molecular regulator of tumor-initiating stem cell-like functions. Objective: This study aimed to determine the role of ZFHX4 in the progression of ovarian serous cystadenocarcinoma (OSC). Methods: Differential gene expression ZFHX4 among low-stage (stages I and II), high-stage (stages III and IV), low-grade (grades I and II), and high-grade (grades III and IV) OSC patients was identified using four independent cohorts from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). We compared ZFHX4 expression as a prognostic factor using Kaplan-Meier survival curves, multivariate analysis, the time-dependent area under the curve (AUC) of Uno's C-index, and the AUC of the receiver operating characteristics at 4 years post diagnosis. Results: ZFHX4 gene expression in high-stage tumors is significantly higher than in low-stage tumors (TCGA, p = 0.007; GSE9891, p = 0.001). A Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that elevated expression of ZFHX4 was associated with a poor prognosis in OSC patients for all cohorts, regardless of stage and grade (TCGA, p = 1e-04; GSE9891, p = 0.0044; GSE13876, p = 0.00078; GSE26712, p = 0.039). Analysis of C-indices and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve further supported this result (C-index: TCGA, 0.599; GSE9891, 0.642; GSE13876, 0.585; GSE26712, 0.597). Moreover, univariate and multivariate Cox hazards analyses confirmed the prognostic significance of ZFHX4 levels. Conclusion: Collectively, these findings suggest that ZFHX4 is a prognostic factor for OSC.

Abstract
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a type of cancer characterized by a short survival time and poor prognosis. Malignant pleural mesothelioma is most frequently associated with exposure to asbestos and other elongated mineral fibers. The aim of this study was to examine molecular differences between asbestos-exposed and non-exposed MPM patients and assess prognostic significances of molecular factors. Clinical and genetic data were downloaded from Cancer Genome Atlas. To identify the molecular differences, Significant Analysis of Microarray method was used. Prognostic significances of differentially expressed genes were confirmed by using Kaplan-Meier curve with the Log-Rank test. Although mRNAs did not exhibit any significant differences between the two patient groups, nine miRNAs were found to be down-regulated in the asbestos-exposed group. The top five pathways most relevant to the selected miRNAs were extracted through pathway enrichment analysis. Survival analysis revealed that high expression of only hsa-miR-98 was significantly associated with poor prognosis in patients with asbestos-exposed MPM. Evidence suggests that management of the aggressiveness and progression of asbestos-induced MPM may require high levels of hsa-miR-98 due to its tumor-suppressive role. Abstract
Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer. Novel biomarkers of ccRCC may provide crucial information on tumor features and prognosis. The present study aimed to determine whether the expression of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) A receptor subunit θ (GABRQ) could serve as a novel prognostic marker of ccRCC. GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain that activates the receptor GABAA, which is comprised of three subunit isoforms: GABRA3, GABRB3 and GABRQ. A recent study reported that GABRQ is involved in the initiation and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma; however, the role of GABRQ in ccRCC remains unknown. In the present study, clinical and transcriptomic data were obtained from cohorts of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Differential GABRQ expression levels among early (TI and II), late (TIII and IV), nonmetastatic (M0) and metastatic (M1, primary tumor) stages of ccRCC samples were then identified. Furthermore, the use of GABRQ as a prognostic gene was analyzed using Uno's C-index based on the time-dependent area under the curve (AUC), the AUC of the receiver operating characteristic curve at 5 years, the Kaplan-Meier survival curve and multivariate analysis. The survival curve analysis revealed that low GABRQ mRNA expression was significantly associated with a poor prognosis of ccRCC (P<0.001 and P=0.0012 for TCGA and ICGC data, respectively). In addition, analyses of the C-index and AUC values further supported this discriminatory power. Furthermore, the prognostic value of GABRQ mRNA expression was confirmed by multivariate Cox regression analysis. Taken together, these results suggested that GABRQ mRNA expression may be considered as a novel prognostic biomarker of ccRCC.

Abstract
The beta-2 adrenergic receptor (ADRB2) regulates the proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, migration, and metastasis of cancer cells. However, its function in the progression of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is unknown. Here, we report that ADRB2 can be a novel prognostic factor for patients with ccRCC. The differential expression of ADRB2 in low-stage (stages I and II), high-stage (stages III and IV), low-grade (grades I and II), and high-grade (grades III and IV) ccRCC was identified in cohorts of patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas and the International Cancer Genome Consortium. We evaluated ADRB2 expression as a prognostic factor using the Kaplan-Meier survival curve, multivariate analysis, time-dependent area under the curve (AUC) of Uno’s C-index, and AUC of the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) at five years. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that reduced ADRB2 expression is associated with poor prognosis in ccRCC patients. Analysis of C-indices and AUC-ROC further confirmed this result. Moreover, multivariate analysis confirmed the prognostic significance of ADRB2 expression. Collectively, these findings suggest that ADRB2 is a potential prognostic factor for ccRCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most typical type of kidney cancer in adults. Hypercalcemia is a well known paraneoplastic syndrome associated with RCC and recent studies have reported that hypercalcemia is closely related to the poor prognosis of RCC patients. Clear cell RCC (ccRCC) is the most common and aggressive subtype of RCC. Although the histological classification of RCC is important for determination of appropriate treatment strategies, effective biomarkers for predicting prognosis of ccRCC have not yet been identified. Since calcium levels affect the prognosis of RCC patients, we evaluated whether the calcium-sensing genes on the plasma membrane, including those encoding calcium channels, CaSR, GPRC6a, and DYSF, could be used as biomarkers to predict the prognosis of ccRCC patients. METHODS Information from 537 patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA; n = 446) and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC; n = 91) was used in this study. Among these genes, DYSF was the only gene whose expression correlated with overall survival of both TGCA and ICGC patients. RESULTS Although DYSF gene expression was higher in ccRCC tissue than in normal kidney tissue, Kaplan-Meier curves showed that the survival rate of ccRCC patients with high DYSF expression was significantly higher than that of patients with low DYSF expression (TCGA, P < 0.0001; ICGC, P = 0.0011). We also validated the potential of DYSF as a prognostic biomarker for ccRCC by conducting a time-dependent area under the curve (AUC) analysis and 5-years receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Finally, multivariate regression analysis revealed that the expression of DYSF is independent of other prognostic parameters (TCGA, P = 0.017; ICGC, P = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS These results suggested that DYSF may play a suppressive role in the progression of ccRCC and could act as a promising prognostic biomarker for predicting the survival of ccRCC patients.

However, its function in the progression of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is unknown. Here, we report that TMED3 could be a new prognostic marker for ccRCC. Patient data were extracted from cohorts in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC). Differential expression of TMED3 was observed between the low stage (Stage I and II) and high stage (Stage III and IV) patients in the TCGA and ICGC cohorts and between the low grade (Grade I and II) and high grade (Grade III and IV) patients in the TCGA cohort. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that TMED3 is a potential prognostic factor for ccRCC.

Abstract
Background Advances in genomics have greatly improved the survival rate in cancer patients. However, due to genetic heterogeneity, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is still difficult to diagnose early, and its survival rate is extremely low. Therefore, we identified biomarkers that predict the prognosis of PDAC patients using independent cohort data. Materials and methods To develop a novel prognostic biomarker, we used the gene expression and clinical data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). Kaplan-Meier survival curve using median values of genes as cutoff showed that EIF4G1 was the only statistically significant gene in the 3 cohorts. We analyzed the prognostic significance of EIF4G1 using the time-dependent area under the curve (AUC) of Uno's C-index, the AUC value of the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) at 3 years, and multivariate Cox analysis. We also compared EIF4G1 levels between tumors and matched non-tumor tissues. Results EIF4G1 is the only prognostic gene in patients with PDAC, which was selected by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. The survival curve showed that high expression of EIF4G1 was associated with poor prognosis of PDAC with a good discriminative ability in 3 independent cohorts. The risk stratifying ability of EIF4G1 was demonstrated by analyzing C-indices and AUC values. Multivariate Cox regression confirmed its prognostic significance. EIF4G1 expression was significantly higher in PDAC tissues than in the matched normal tissues. Conclusion EIF4G1 could be used as a novel prognostic marker for PDAC and to determine suitable treatment options.

Abstract
With the growing requirement for novel prognostic biomarkers for pancreatic cancer, many studies have focused on clinical and/or genomic variables. Although many studies have been performed, carbohydrate antigen 19-9 is the only biomarker in clinical use. Therefore, the present study examined whether γ-secretase genes, including presenilin (PSEN), nicastrin (NCSTN), presenilin enhancer protein 2 (PSENEN), and anterior pharynx-defective 1 (APH1-), could serve as prognostic factors for pancreatic cancer. The cohorts selected included >100 pancreatic cancer patients. Patient data were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GSE21501). The prognostic roles of the γ-secretase genes were analyzed by several survival analysis methods. Among the γ-secretase genes, the prognosis tended to be worse in the 2 cohorts with increasing expression of PSEN1, APH1A, and PSENEN, while the remaining genes were the opposite in the 2 cohorts. Notably, although the patient characteristics were quite different, APH1A was statistically significantly associated with prognosis in the 2 cohorts. The hazard ratio of APH1A for overall survival was 1.598 (TCGA) and 2.724 (GSE21501). These results contribute to the study of γ-secretase in pancreatic cancer. We believe that γ-secretase, particularly APH1A, will be a new prognostic biomarker for pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
Although pathological observations provide approximate prognoses, it is difficult to achieve prognosis in patients with existing prognostic factors. Therefore, it is very important to find appropriate biomarkers to achieve accurate cancer prognosis. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has several subtypes, the discrimination of which is crucial for proper treatment. Here, we present a novel biomarker, VNN3, which is used to prognose clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), the most common and aggressive subtype of kidney cancer. Patient information analyzed in our study was extracted from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) cohorts. VNN3 expression was considerably higher in stages III and IV than in stages I and II. Moreover, Kaplan–Meier curves associated high VNN3 expression with poor prognoses (TCGA, p < .0001; ICGC, p = .00076), confirming that ccRCC prognosis can be predicted via VNN3 expression patterns. Consistent with all patient results, the prognosis of patients with higher VNN3 expression was worse in both low stage (I and II) and high stage (III and IV) (TCGA, p < 0.0001 in stage I and II; ICGC, p = 0.028 in stage I and II; TCGA, p = 0.005 in stage III and IV). Area under the curve and receiver operating characteristic curves supported our results that highlighted VNN3 expression as a suitable ccRCC biomarker. Multivariate analysis also verified the prognostic performance of VNN3 expression (TCGA, p < .001; ICGC, p = .017). Altogether, we suggest that VNN3 is applicable as a new biomarker to establish prognosis in patients with ccRCC.

Abstract
The extent of epidural anaesthesia and pattern of spread of contrast medium, using different injection techniques, has not been well documented. Therefore, in this prospective, randomized, double-blind study, the extent of anaesthesia and pattern of spread of contrast medium following an epidural bolus injection, via either a Tuohy needle or an epidural catheter, were compared. The study had two parts. In the first, 59 of 79 patients scheduled for a lower extremity operation under epidural anaesthesia were randomly allocated to one of the two groups. Anaesthesia was achieved with an epidural injection of 10 to 15 ml (including a 3 ml test dose) of 0.75% ropivacaine and fentanyl 25 μg via either a Tuohy needle (Group N, n=31) or a catheter (Group C, n=28). The level of sensory anaesthesia was recorded. In the second part, the remaining 20 patients were randomized to initially receive 5 ml of contrast medium via either a Tuohy needle (Group NE, n=10) or a catheter (Group CE, n=10). The extent of spread was recorded radiologically. Unilateral or missed blocks and additional dose requirement were absent in Groups N and C. No differences were found in the extent of sensory anaesthesia or the spread of contrast medium. Twenty per cent of catheter tips lay outside the lateral margins of the vertebral bodies. We found that an epidural bolus injection, via either a Tuohy needle or a catheter, made no difference in regard to spread of local anaesthetic or contrast medium in the epidural space.

Abstract
Backgrounds/Aims Discovery of new prognostic factors for cases in which the pancreatic cancer scoring and staging system does not result in a clear definition is imperative. We examined the role of Human AlkB homolog H5 (ALKBH5) as a prognostic marker for pancreatic cancer. Methods Patient data were extracted from the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). The prognostic value of ALKBH5 was confirmed via analysis of ALKBH5 and other clinical factors, such as age, sex, and stage, using the time-dependent area under the curve (AUC) of Uno's C-index, the AUC value of the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) at three years, the Kaplan-Meier survival curve, and multivariate analysis. Results ALKBH5 showed excellent prognosis prediction in comparison with existing markers in the two independent cohorts (n=262). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that ALKBH5 expression was positively associated with overall survival (log-rank test, ICGC, p=0.001; TCGA, p=0.01). Notably, comparison of C-index and AUC values in ROC analysis showed that ALKBH5 was associated with high C-index and AUC values compared with other clinical variables (C-index: ICGC, 0.621; TCGA, 0.614 and AUC at three years: ICGC, 0.609; TCGA, 0.558). Multivariate analysis demonstrated thatALKBH5 is an independent prognostic factor (ICGC, p=0.0123; TCGA, p<0.001). Conclusions These findings contribute to the study of RNA methylation in pancreatic cancer. We believe that ALKBH5 is a new prognostic marker for pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Certain nuclear envelope proteins are associated with important cancer cell characteristics, including migration and proliferation. Abnormal expression of and genetic changes in nuclear envelope proteins have been reported in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. Transmembrane protein 18 (TMEM18), a nuclear envelope protein, is involved in neural stem cell migration and tumorigenicity. METHODS To examine the prognostic significance of TMEM18 in AML patients, we analyzed an AML cohort from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA, n = 142). RESULTS Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that TMEM18 overexpression was associated with a better AML prognosis with good discrimination (p = 0.019). Interestingly, this ability to predict the prognosis was significant in male AML patients, but not in female ones. C-index and area-under-the-curve analyses further supported this discriminative ability and multivariate analysis confirmed its prognostic significance (p = 0.00347). Correlation analysis revealed that TMEM18 had a statistically significant positive correlation with nuclear envelop protein 133 (NUP133), NUP35, NUP54, NUP62, and NUP88. CONCLUSION Because the current AML prognostic factors do not take mRNA expression into consideration unlike other cancers, the development of mRNA-based prognostic factors would be beneficial for accurate prediction of the survival of AML patients. Therefore, TMEM18 gene is a potential biomarker for AML.

Abstract
The kidney is one of the main targets for toxicity induced by xenobiotics. Sensitive detection of early impairment is critical to assess chemical-associated renal toxicity. The aim of this study was to identify potential nephrotoxic biomarkers in rat kidney tissues after exposure to mercury (Hg), a representative nephrotoxicant, and to evaluate these new biomarkers employing in vivo and in vitro systems. Mercuric chloride was administered orally to Sprague-Dawley rats for 2 weeks. Proteomic analysis revealed that aldo-keto reductase (AKR7A1) and glutathione S-transferase pi (GSTP1) were significantly elevated in kidney after Hg exposure. While the levels of conventional nephrotoxic clinical markers including blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine were not elevated, the mRNA and protein levels of AKR7A1 and GSTP1 were increased upon Hg exposure in a dose-dependent manner. The increases in AKR7A1 and GSTP1 were also observed in rat kidneys after an extended exposure for 6 weeks to low-dose Hg. In in vitro rat kidney proximal tubular cells, changes in AKR7A1 and GSTP1 levels correlated well with the extent of cytotoxicity induced by Hg, cadmium, or cisplatin. AKR7A1 and GSTP1 were identified as new candidates for Hg-induced nephrotoxicity, suggesting that these biomarkers have potential for evaluating or predicting nephrotoxicity.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide. Currently, the clinical strategies available for the treatment of HCC remain insufficient for the poor prognosis. Sodium/iodide symporter (NIS)-based radioiodine therapy is proposed as a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of HCC. However, it is difficult for HCC cells to trap iodine for the lower expression of NIS. Small activating RNA (saRNA) is a newly identified small double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) that can induce endogenous gene expression by targeting promoter sequences. Here, we designed an saRNA (saRNA-482) that targeted the NIS promoter sequences. In the cultured HepG2 cells and Hep3B cells, the expressions of NIS were upregulated after transfection of saRNA-482. In addition, the uptake of 125I increased in the cultured HepG2 and Hep3B cells transfected with saRNA-482. Furthermore, the cell viabilities were significantly inhibited in the saRNA-482-transfected HepG2 and Hep3B cells after 131I treatment. Meanwhile, the apoptosis of saRNA-482-transfected HepG2 and Hep3B cells significantly increased after 131I treatment. The results suggest that RNA activation-mediated upregulation of NIS may have an endoradiotherapeutic potential in the treatment of HCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders of childhood and can be associated with obesity. The aim of this study was to reveal the connection between ADHD symptoms, food habits and obesity. METHODS We examined 12 350 children (6010 boys, 6340 girls) from 27 elementary schools in Cheonan, the Republic of Korea. The study subjects were 5- to 13-year-old children (9.4 ± 1.7 years). Parents completed the DuPaul ADHD Rating Scale. Food habits were measured by a questionnaire adapted from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey and a validated mini-dietary assessment tool. The full set of hypothesized associations was tested using covariance structural modelling. RESULTS The prevalence of ADHD was 7.6% and that of obesity was 4.5% in our study population. The data was well fit by the model. ADHD was associated with body mass index (BMI; standardized β = 0.086, P < 0.001). Bulimic dietary behaviours was related to BMI (standardized β = 0.548, P < 0.001). Socio-economic status was associated with BMI (standardized β = -0.017, P = 0.027). CONCLUSION Our analysis suggested that ADHD was a risk factor for obesity through dietary behavioural change and socio-economic status.

BACKGROUND Exposure to ambient air pollution and bronchiolitis are risk factors for asthma. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of air pollution on the development of asthma in children with past episodes of bronchiolitis. METHODS A prospective 2-year follow-up survey consisting of parental responses to the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire, and allergy evaluations were conducted in 1743 children with a mean age of 6.8 years. Recent 5-year exposure to air pollution was estimated using a geographic information system. RESULTS Higher exposure to ozone was associated with airway hyper-responsiveness (PC20 ≤ 16 mg/ml) at enrollment (odds ratio [OR] = 1.60, 95% CI [confidence interval] = 1.13-2.27) and with new episodes of wheezing during the 2-year period (OR = 1.92, 95% CI = 0.96-3.83). Past episodes of bronchiolitis were associated with both current wheezing and physician-diagnosed asthma. When the two factors were combined, the prevalence of bronchial hyper-reactivity (OR = 2.96, 95% CI = 1.41-6.24) and new wheezing (OR = 4.17, 95% CI = 0.89-19.66) as well as current wheezing and physician-diagnosed asthma was even greater (P for trend <0.05 for all). In children with both risk factors, lung function was significantly decreased, with atopic children being particularly vulnerable. CONCLUSION In children, the interaction between air pollution and past episodes of bronchiolitis resulted in a greater prevalence of asthma and pointed to an association with bronchial hyper-reactivity and decreased lung function. These results suggest mechanisms underlying the development of asthma.

Abstract
The concentration of micronutrients impacts fetal development and pregnancy outcome and has been suggested to be negatively correlated with the body-mass index (BMI). We evaluated the relationship between BMI and the serum folate concentration in 802 and 660 Korean pregnant women in mid- and late pregnancy, respectively, who participated in a multicenter prospective study. There was a significant negative correlation between BMI value and the serum folate concentration at mid- and late pregnancy (P for trend 0.001 and 0.024, respectively). A general linear model confirmed this correlation at both time points after adjusting for gestational age and total folate intake. These findings are important as the serum folate concentration is a rate-limiting factor for placental folate transport to the fetus, and an inadequate folate supply may cause various malformations.

Abstract
We report experimental results for the behavior of slow-combustion fronts in the presence of a columnar defect with enhanced or reduced driving, and compare them with those of mean-field theory. We also compare them with simulation results for an analogous problem of driven flow of particles with hard-core repulsion (ASEP) and a single defect bond with a different hopping probability. The difference in the shape of the front profiles for enhanced vs reduced driving in the defect clearly demonstrates the existence of a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang-type nonlinear term in the effective evolution equation for the slow-combustion fronts. We also find that slow-combustion fronts display a faceted form for large enough enhanced driving, and that there is a corresponding increase then in the average front speed. This increase in the average front speed disappears at a nonzero enhanced driving in agreement with the simulated behavior of the ASEP model.

Abstract
This study examined the effects of shiftwork on the cardiovascular system. The blood pressure (BP) and heart rate variability (HRV) of 134 male workers, who worked 8-hour shifts with rapid rotation of shifts at 3-day intervals, were examined for all the three shifts. In addition, the job stress was measured by Karasek's JCQ 49-item questionnaire and the circadian type was assessed by the morningness-eveningness questionnaire. The smoking and alcohol drinking habits, marital status and past medical history were also obtained. The method of analyzing the measured data based on a mixed model was used to illustrate the association between the shiftwork duration and the BP or HRV. The average age of workers was 29 years (between 25-44). Among them, 77.9% were current smokers, 50% showed the passive type of job strain in Karasek's model. The mean shiftwork duration was 5.21 years (range 5.4 months--10 years). In the circadian type, none of them belonged to a definitely morning type or a definitely evening type. In the multivariate analysis adjusted by age, job strain, shift, circadian rhythm and smoking, the blood pressure showed significantly increasing trends according to shiftwork duration in both the systolic and diastolic BP. The heart rate variability also showed a significantly decreasing trend according to the shiftwork duration in both the parasympathetic and sympathetic functions (p < 0.05). These results suggests that there are negative health effects arising from shiftwork on the cardiovascular system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether surveillance and infection control interventions decrease the incidence of catheter-related (CR) bloodstream infections (BSIs) in Korea. SETTING A medical-surgical intensive care unit (ICU) of a university hospital in Korea. DESIGN The CR infection rate of the intervention period was compared to that of historical controls for a 4-month period. PATIENTS All patients with a central venous catheter in the intensive care unit (ICU) from October 1998 to January 1999. METHODS Active infection control programs were initiated during the intervention period. Data collected included patient characteristics, risk factors of CR infection, and the microbiology laboratory results. Laboratory-proven CR infection rates were compared between the intervention group and control group. RESULTS 304 catheters were inserted into 248 patients. The intervention group and the control group showed similar characteristics, but more patients in the intervention group received steroid therapy, and subclavian insertion was more common in the intervention group. CR BSI occurred in 1.3 per 1,000 catheter-days in the intervention group and 4.2 in the control group (binomial test, P=.14). CR infections were associated with the duration of ICU admission by multivariate logistic regression. CONCLUSIONS The data suggested that an active infection surveillance and control program could reduce the rate of CR

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of arachidonic acid metabolites (AAMs) in the pathogenesis of antrochoanal polyp (ACP). Using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), we assayed the tissue concentrations of 6-keto-PGF1alpha, leukotrienes (LTs) and hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (HETE). Concentrations of AAMs in ACP were compared with the level in the control turbinate tissues and nasal polyps associated with chronic paranasal sinusitis (NPS). The concentrations of 6-keto-PGF1alpha were not significantly different in the control turbinate, ACP and NPS groups. In ACP, concentrations of LTC4, 15-HETE and 12-HETE were significantly lower than in the control turbinate. The striking differences in the profile of AAMs between ACP and NPS included a lack of production of LTD4 and LTE4 in ACP, also detectable in NPS, and markedly lower concentrations of 15-HETE and 12-HETE in ACP. The results of this study indicate that decreased lipoxygenase pathway products in arachidonic acid metabolism may be involved in the pathogenesis of ACP. However, in the pathogenesis of NPS, increased production of LTD4 and LTE4 may have an important role. Taken together, our results demonstrate a difference in pathogenesis between ACP and NPS, particularly in terms of arachidonic acid metabolism.

Abstract
It has been reported that a change in the cellular redox state may be involved in the regulation of vascular tone, but the underlying mechanism is not fully understood. The present study was designed to investigate the cellular effect of sulfhydryl modifying agents in the coronary artery of rabbit using the tension measurement and whole cell clamping method. The application of diamide, a sulfhydryl oxidizing agent, relaxed the endothelium denuded coronary arteries in a dose dependent manner. The fact that this diamide-induced relaxation was significantly attenuated by a pretreatment of 4-AP, and the coronary arteries precontracted with 100 mM K+ instead of histamine, suggests the involvement of 4-AP sensitive K+ channels in the diamide-induced relaxation of coronary arteries. Whole cell patch clamp studies revealed that the 4-AP sensitive IdK was significantly enhanced by the membrane permeant oxidizing agents, diamide and DTDP, and were reversed by subsequent exposure to the reducing agent, DTT. Neither the membrane impermeant oxidizing or reducing agents, GSSG or GSH, had any effect on the activity of IdK, indicating that intracellular sulfhydryl modification is critical for modulating IdK activity. The Diamide failed to significantly alter the voltage dependence of the activation and inactivation parameters, and did not change the inactivation process, suggesting that diamide increases the number of functional channels without altering their gating properties. Since IdK has been believed to play an important role in regulating membrane potential and arterial tone, our results about the effect of sulfhydryl modifying agents on coronary arterial tone and IdK activity should help understand the pathophysiology of the diseases, where oxidative damage has been implicated.

Abstract
The present paper aimed at learning the effects of two different levels of air permeability and moisture absorption on clothing microclimate and subjective sensation in sedentary women. Three kinds of clothing ensemble were investigated: 1) polyester clothing with low moisture absorption and low air permeability (A clothing); 2) polyester clothing with low moisture absorption and high air permeability (B clothing); and 3) cotton clothing with high moisture absorption and high air permeability (C clothing). After 20 min of dressing time, the room temperature and humidity began to rise from 27 degrees C and 50% rh to 33 degrees C and 70% rh over 20 min, and it was maintained for 30 min (Section I); it then began to fall to 27 degrees C and 50% rh over 20 min, and it was maintained there for 20 min (Section II). The subject sat quietly on a chair for 110 min. The main findings are summarized as follows: 1) The clothing surface temperature was significantly higher in C clothing than in B clothing during section I, but it was significantly higher in B clothing than in C clothing during section II. 2) Although the positive relationship between the microclimate humidity and forearm sweat rate was significantly confirmed in all three kinds of clothing, the microclimate humidity at the chest for the same sweat rate was lower in C clothing than in A and B clothing. These results were discussed in terms of thermal physiology.

Abstract
The present paper aimed at determining the combined effects of two different levels of air permeability and moisture absorption, in terms of clothing microclimate and subjective sensation, in resting and exercising subjects at an ambient temperature of 27 degrees C, a relative humidity of 50% and an air velocity of 0.14 m s-1. Three kinds of clothing ensemble were investigated: (1) polyester clothing with low moisture absorption and low air permeability (A), (2) polyester clothing with low moisture absorption and high air permeability (B), and (3) cotton clothing with high moisture absorption and high air permeability (C). The subjects exercised for 10 min on a cycle ergometer at an intensity of 30% maximal oxygen uptake and then had a 10 min rest. This sequence was repeated four times. The main findings are summarized as follows: (1) The clothing microclimate humidity in the back area was significantly higher in A than in B, and in C than in B. (2) The clothing microclimate temperature in the chest area was significantly higher in B than in A, and in B than in C. (3) The clothing microclimate temperature in the back area was significantly higher in C than in B. (4) The clothing surface temperature was significantly higher in C than in B. (5) Although the positive relationships between the microclimate humidity and forearm sweat rate was significantly confirmed in all three kinds of clothing, the microclimate humidity at chest for the same sweat rate was lower in C than in A and B. (6) Although the positive relationships between subjective sensation and forearm sweat rates were significantly confirmed in all three kinds of clothing, the subjective discomfort seemed to be reduced more effectively in C than in A and B for the same sweat rate. These results were discussed in terms of thermal physiology and combined effects of air permeability and moisture absorbency of the fabrics.
