Abstract
Performances, emissions from the gas turbine engine, and soot formations in diffusion flames of kerosene (Jet A1) and its mixture with 5% by volume bioparaffins (known as BK-5) are reported in the present study. A Rover 1S/60 gas turbine engine was used for recording performance parameters and emissions. Soot characteristics were investigated in smoke-free coannular wick-fed diffusion flames. This study is the next step that must be performed in the certification process of a new aviation biofuel before it is tested in the aircraft. The results show that BK-5 produced a similar performance against Jet A1. Throughout the whole power range under investigation, BK-5 emitted 3.4% NOx higher than Jet A1, while Jet A1 released CO and HC at the rates that are, respectively, 1.8 and 4.5% greater than its counterpart. The soot emissions from the BK-5 and Jet A1 were comparable across the measured flame height range. The results encouraged future studies to carry out the modern engine and flight tests. The production process for bioparaffins employed in this work has been demonstrated to be viable and appropriate for tropical developing nations. The current process should also continue to be improved by eliminating high-distillation temperature components in bioparaffins.

Abstract
Severe fever with the thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) causes fatal disease in humans, cats, and cheetahs. In this study, the information on seven dogs with SFTS was summarized. All dogs showed anorexia, high fever, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia, two dogs showed vomiting and loose stool, and five dogs had tick parasites. All dogs also had a history of outdoor activity. The SFTSV gene was detected in all dogs. Remarkably, three dogs (43%) died. SFTSV was isolated from six dogs and the complete genomes were determined. A significant increase in anti-SFTSV-IgG antibodies was observed in two dogs after recovery, and anti-SFTSV-IgM antibodies were detected in four dogs in the acute phase. Using an ELISA cut-off value of 0.410 to discriminate between SFTSV-negative and positive dogs, the detection of anti-SFTSV-IgM antibodies was useful for the diagnosis of dogs with acute-phase SFTS. Four out of the ninety-eight SFTSV-negative dogs possessed high anti-SFTSV IgG antibody titers, indicating that some dogs can recover from SFTSV infection. In conclusion, SFTSV is lethal in some dogs, but many dogs recover from SFTSV infection.

Abstract
Background Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) causes severe hemorrhagic fever in humans and cats. Clinical symptoms of SFTS-infected cats resemble those of SFTS patients, whereas SFTS-contracted cats have high levels of viral RNA loads in the serum and body fluids. Due to the risk of direct infection from SFTS-infected cats to human, it is important to diagnose SFTS-suspected animals. In this study, a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was newly developed to diagnose SFTS-suspected animals without non-specific reactions. Methodology/principle findings Four primer sets were newly designed from consensus sequences constructed from 108 strains of SFTSV. A RT-PCR with these four primer sets successfully and specifically detected four clades of SFTSV. Their limits of detection are 1–10 copies/reaction. Using this RT-PCR, 5 cat cases among 56 SFTS-suspected animal cases were diagnosed as SFTS. From these cats, IgM or IgG against SFTSV were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), but not neutralizing antibodies by plaque reduction neutralization titer (PRNT) test. This phenomenon is similar to those of fatal SFTS patients. Conclusion/significance This newly developed RT-PCR could detect SFTSV RNA of several clades and from SFTS-suspected animals. In addition to ELISA and PRNT test, the useful laboratory diagnosis systems of SFTS-suspected animals has been made in this study.

Abstract
AIM The objective of the current study was to identify risk factors that affect the onset of dependence and chronic psychosis due to cannabis use. METHODS We examined clinical genetic factors, psychiatric disorders prior to cannabis use, starting age of cannabis use, duration and frequency of cannabis use, types of cannabis products used, combined use of other psychoactive substances, and the psychiatric diagnosis of 71 patients with cannabis-related psychiatric disorders who underwent treatment at nine mental health hospitals in Japan. Information was collected from cross-sectional interview surveys conducted by each patient's attending psychiatrist. RESULTS For the diagnosis of dependence syndrome due to the use of cannabis, we found associations with the number of years of cannabis use and the use of cannabis products with a high Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content. However, we found no association between diagnosis of residual and late-onset psychotic disorders and clinical genetic factors, presence of preceding psychiatric disorders, duration and frequency of cannabis use, starting age of cannabis use, or combined use of other psychoactive substances; an association was found only for the absence of use of cannabis products other than dried cannabis. CONCLUSION The onset of cannabis dependence was related to long-term cannabis use and the use of cannabis products with a high THC content. However, chronic psychosis was not associated with total THC intake or psychiatric vulnerability. Thus, unknown factors appear to be involved in the onset of chronic psychosis.

Abstract
Francisella tularensis, which causes tularemia, is an intracellular gram-negative bacterium. F. tularensis has received significant attention in recent decades because of its history as a biological weapon. Thus, development of novel vaccines against tularemia has been an important goal. The attenuated F. tularensis strain ΔpdpC, in which the pathogenicity determinant protein C gene (pdpC) has been disrupted by TargeTron mutagenesis, was investigated as a potential vaccine candidate for tularemia in the present study. C57BL/6J mice immunized s.c. with 1 × 106 CFUs of ΔpdpC were challenged intranasally with 100× the median lethal dose (LD50 ) of a virulent SCHU P9 strain 21 days post immunization. Protection against this challenge was achieved in 38% of immunized C57BL/6J mice administered 100 LD50 of this strain. Conversely, all unimmunized mice succumbed to death 6 days post challenge. Survival rates were significantly higher in vaccinated than in unimmunized mice. In addition, ΔpdpC was passaged serially in mice to confirm its stable attenuation. Low bacterial loads persisted in mouse spleens during the first to tenth passages. No statistically significant changes in the number of CFUs were observed during in vivo passage of ΔpdpC. The inserted intron sequences for disrupting pdpC were completely maintained even after the tenth passage in mice. Considering the stable attenuation and intron sequences, it is suggested that ΔpdpC is a promising tularemia vaccine candidate.

Abstract
Pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) is widely used for listeriosis surveillance. Although this technique is effective for epidemiology, the data among laboratories are inconsistent. We previously reported a method for Listeria monocytogenes subtyping combined with sequence analysis of partial iap and whole genome restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) using XbaI, ClaI (BanIII) and PstI. However, distinguishing subtypes was challenging, because the output comprised complicated fragment patterns. In this study, we aimed to establish a simple genotyping method that does not depend on visual observation, rather it focuses on multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) using three genes, iap, sigB and actA. Sixty-eight strains of L. monocytogenes including EGD-e as a reference strain were investigated to ensure consistency with previous data on the genetic characterization. All strains were grouped into 29 types by both analyses. Although there are some differences in classification, major clades included the same strains. Simpson's indices of diversity (SID) by MLST and iap-RFLP-based typing were 0.967 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.955/0.978) and 0.967 (95% CI: 0.955/0.979), respectively. The discriminatory power of both methods can be considered almost identical. Compared with the results of 38 selected strains, the strains within the MLST clusters in this study coincided with those obtained using PFGE. Thus, the MLST strategy could help differentiate among L. monocytogenes isolates during epidemiological studies.

F. tularensis strains isolated in Japan are genetically unique from non-Japanese strains; however, their phenotypic properties have not been well studied. Thus, mice were infected with representative Japanese strains of F. tularensis and their virulence and mouse immune responses to them assessed. Of four representative Japanese strains, the Ebina, Jap and Tsuchiya strains were susceptible to H2 O2 and did not grow well intracellularly. Only Yama strain grew intracellularly and was lethal to mice. Infection with Yama strain resulted in drastic increases in IFN-γ, CD4 and CD8 double-positive T cells and Th1 cells (CD3, CD4 and Tim3-positive cells), and a decrease in the ratio of CD8-positive CD4-negative T cells in mice. C57BL/6J mice that survived infection produced IgM antibodies to LPS and IgG2c antibodies to 43, 19 and 17 kDa proteinase K-sensitive components. These data are valuable for understanding the phenotypic properties of F. tularensis in Japan.

Abstract
The expression of anger in Japanese people is different from that of other races. We developed a new brief inventory, the Overt-Covert Aggression Inventory, to assess aggressive behavior of Japanese people by focusing on their uniqueness and examined us reliability and validity. This inventory, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale, the Japanese version of the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, and the Picture-Frustration Study were administered to 3,104 men and 316 women in a factory. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, concurrent validity, and construct validity of the scale were examined. We confirmed that the Overt-Covert Aggression Inventory has adequate reliability and sufficient concurrent validity; however, further studies of the construct validity and discriminant validity are required.

Abstract
Samples taken from 428 wild animals and 126 ticks, collected from a tularemia-endemic area in Japan between 2005 and 2013, were analyzed for the presence of Francisella tularensis. F. tularensis was isolated from a Japanese hare carcass whereas the samples from live animals and ticks were negative for F. tularensis by real-time PCR. Our results suggest that F. tularensis is still present in Japan although its prevalence is considerably low even in areas where tularemia is endemic.

Abstract
Tularemia, a highly infectious zoonotic disease caused by Francisella tularensis, occurs sporadically in Japan. However, little is known about the prevalence of the disease in wild animals. A total of 632 samples obtained from 150 Japanese black bears, 142 Japanese hares, 120 small rodents, 97 rats, 53 raptors, 26 Japanese monkeys, 21 Japanese raccoon dogs, 20 masked palm civets, and three Japanese red foxes between 2002 and 2010 were investigated for the presence of antibodies to F. tularensis by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) and the commonly used microagglutination (MA) test. Seropositive cELISA and MA results were obtained in 23 and 18 Japanese black bears, three and two Japanese raccoon dogs, and two and one small rodents, respectively. All MA-positive samples (n=21) were also positive by cELISA. Six of seven samples that were only positive by cELISA were confirmed to be antibody-positive by western blot analysis. These findings suggest that cELISA is a highly sensitive and useful test for serosurveillance of tularemia among various species of wild animals. Because this is the first study to detect F. tularensis-seropositive Japanese raccoon dogs, these could join Japanese black bears as sentinel animals for tularemia in the wild in Japan. Further continuous serosurveillance for F. tularensis in various species of wild animals using appropriate methods such as cELISA is important to assess the risks of human exposure and to improve our understanding of the ecology of F. tularensis in the wild.

Abstract
Francisella tularensis subspecies tularensis, the etiological agent of tularemia, is highly pathogenic to humans and animals. However, the SCHU strain of F. tularensis SCHU P0 maintained by passaging in artificial media has been found to be attenuated. To better understand the molecular mechanisms behind the pathogenicity of F. tularensis SCHU, we attempted to isolate virulent bacteria by serial passages in mice. SCHU P5 obtained after 5th passages in mice remained avirulent, while SCHU P9 obtained after 9th passages was completely virulent in mice. Moreover, SCHU P9 grew more efficiently in J774.1 murine macrophages compared with that in the less pathogenic SCHU P0 and P5. Comparison of the nucleotide sequences of the whole genomes of SCHU P0, P5, and P9 revealed only 1 nucleotide difference among P0, P5 and P9 in 1 of the 2 copies of pathogenicity determinant protein C (pdpC) gene. An adenine residue deletion was observed in the pdpC1 gene of SCHU P0, P5, and P9 and in the pdpC2 gene of SCHU P0, and P5, while P9 was characterized by the wild type pdpC2 gene. Thus, SCHU P0 and P5 expressed only truncated forms of PdpC protein, while SCHU P9 expressed both wild type and truncated versions. To validate the pathogenicity of PdpC, both copies of the pdpC gene in SCHU P9 have been inactivated by Targetron mutagenesis. SCHU P9 mutants with inactivated pdpC gene showed low intracellular growth in J774.1 cells and did not induce severe disease in experimentally infected mice, while virulence of the mutants was restored by complementation with expression of the intact PdpC. These results demonstrate that PdpC is crucial in determining the virulence of F. tularensis SCHU.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Renal cell carcinoma (RCCs) is the most common malignancy of the kidney. When RCC progresses, it is known to form tumor thrombus in the renal vein and/or inferior vena cava. However, RCC does not normally form tumor thrombus in the ureter or renal pelvis. CASE PRESENTATION A 43-year-old man presented to our department for the treatment of a renal tumor with asymptomatic gross hematuria. In a dynamic CT study, contrast enhancement revealed a tumor suspected to be RCC, but atypical finding as a tumor thrombus that filled the renal pelvis and the whole ureter was also observed. Nephroureterectomy was performed, and the tumor was diagnosed histopathologically as RCC. CONCLUSION We report here a very rare case of RCC with a tumor thrombus in the whole ureter.

Abstract
Tularemia is a zoonotic disease caused by Francisella tularensis. The distribution of the pathogen in Japan has not been studied well. In this study, seroprevalence of tularemia among wild black bears and hares in Japan was determined. Blood samples collected from 431 Japanese black bears (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) and 293 Japanese hares (Lepus brachurus) between 1998 and 2009 were examined for antibodies against F. tularensis by micro-agglutination test (MA) or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. By subsequent confirmatory tests using western blot (WB) and indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA), eight sera from Japanese black bears were definitely shown to be seropositive. All of these eight bears were residents of the northeastern part of main-island of Japan, where human tularemia had been reported. On the other hand, no seropositive Japanese hares were found. These results suggest that Japanese black bears can serve as sentinel for tularemia surveillance and may help understand the distribution of F. tularensis throughout the country. This is the first report on detection of antibody to F. tularensis in black bears of Japan.

Abstract
An adult male hare (Lepus brachyurus angustidens) was discovered in a moribund condition in the bush in the mountains of Aomori prefecture in Japan. Upon gross inspection, many ticks were found on the neck and the external ear regions, and more than half the ticks contained blood in the intestine. The skin around the tick bite wounds was alopecic and mildly thickened. At necropsy, enlargement of the cervical lymph nodes and spleen were observed. Histologically, acute necrotizing splenitis, lymphadenitis, hepatitis, pneumonia, myelitis, adrenalitis, and encephalitis with bacterial organisms were observed. The cutaneous lesions were chronic and cysts had formed in the areas marked by tick bites. Immunohistochemically, the organisms in the skin, liver, spleen, lymph nodes, lungs, adrenal glands, brain, bone marrow, and ticks were positive for F. tularensis antigen. Microbiological and polymerase chain reaction results were consistent with F. tularensis subsp. holarctica. Because the cutaneous lesions were more chronic than those in the visceral organs and F. tularensis was detected in the ticks, we inferred that F. tularensis was transmitted to the hare via tick bites.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research on the association between job strain or other job stressors and depressive disorders is still limited. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the prospective association of job strain, role stressors and job insecurity with long-term sick leave due to depressive disorders. METHODS A prospective study was conducted of a total of 15 256 men aged 18-67 years with no previous history of mental disorders employed in six manufacturing factories located in several regions of Japan. At baseline, they were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire, including self-reported measures of job strain, as well as its components (job overload and job control), role stressors (role ambiguity and role conflict), social support at work, job insecurity and other demographic and psychological covariates. During the follow-up, a long-term sick leave of 30 days or more due to depressive disorders was recorded. RESULTS During 5.14 years of follow-up on average, 47 incident cases of sick leave of 30 days or more due to depressive disorders were observed. High job control at baseline was associated with a lower risk of long-term sick leave due to depressive disorders, after adjusting for demographic variables, depressive symptoms and neuroticism at baseline (hazard ratio 0.28, 95% CI 0.11 to 0.71); high role ambiguity was associated with the higher risk (hazard ratio 3.49, 95% CI 1.43 to 8.49). CONCLUSION Job control and role ambiguity may be important predictors of long-term sick leave due to depressive disorders among male employees, independent of depressive symptoms and neuroticism.

Abstract
The recently developed MLVA has high discriminatory power for the typing of individual strains or isolates of Francisella tularensis. In the present study, MLVA was applied to 33 Japanese F. tularensis subspecies holarctica strains to examine the genetic diversity of F. tularensis isolated. Among the seven VNTR loci analyzed, Ft-M2, Ft-M10, and Ft-M20 loci showed high genetic polymorphism in Japanese strains, whereas Ft-M3 was most variable in non-Japanese strains. These results provide novel extended information about the genomic diversity among the strains of F. tularensis ssp. holarctica distributed in Japan and enable determination of whether a given isolate is indigenous to Japan by examining these loci using MLVA.

Abstract
The genetic diagnosis of pathogenic agents using microarrays has the advantage of high-throughput detection, but a relatively large amount of DNA sample is required. To obtain a sufficient amount of DNA for molecular diagnoses, several whole genome amplification (WGA) methods have been proposed. In this study, using Francisella tularensis and Escherichia coli as models, we compared four WGA methods in terms of their efficiency of amplification of whole genomic DNA in order to identify the most suitable method for preparing DNA to be used for microarray analysis. It was possible to obtain more than 1.5 microg of products from 10 ng of F. tularensis and E. coli genomic DNA using four methods, but biases in the amplification of bacterial genes were least prominent in the multiple displacement amplification (MDA) or OmniPlex WGA. When the amplified DNAs were applied to microarray slides consisting of 32 different genes probes, DNAs amplified by Phi29 v2 of MDA and OmniPlex WGA showed high signal intensity as well as a high signal-to-noise ratio for all 32 genes. These results indicate that Phi29 v2 and OmniPlex WGA are useful methods for obtaining sufficient DNA from a limited amount of samples for the detection of microbes using microarrays.

Abstract
We examined the involvement of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in bladder outlet obstruction (BOO)-induced bladder smooth muscle hypertrophy using a rat in vivo and in vitro study. BOO induced increases in bladder weight and bladder smooth muscle thickness 1 week after the operation. By using antibody microarrays, 64 of 389 proteins blotted on the array met our selection criteria of an INR value between > or = 2.0 and < or = 0.5. This result revealed up-regulation of transcription factors, cell cycle regulatory proteins, apoptosis-associated proteins and so on. On the other hand, down-regulation (INR value < or = 0.5) of proteins was not found. In a profiling study, we found an increase in the expression of STAT3. A significant increase in nuclear phosphorylated STAT3 expression was confirmed in bladder smooth muscle tissue by immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis. Cyclical stretch-relaxation (1 Hz) at 120% elongation significantly increased the expression of STAT3 and of alpha-smooth muscle actin in primary cultured bladder smooth muscle cells. Furthermore, the blockade of STAT3 expression by the transfection of STAT3 small interfering RNA (siRNA) significantly prevented the stretch-induced increase in alpha-smooth muscle actin expression. These results suggest that STAT3 has an important role in the induction of bladder smooth muscle hypertrophy.

Abstract
Engineering a life-support system for living on Mars requires the modeling of heat and mass transfer. This report describes the analysis of heat and mass transfer phenomena in a greenhouse dome, which is being designed as a pressurized life-support system for agricultural production on Mars. In this Martian greenhouse, solar energy will be converted into chemical energy in plant biomass. Agricultural products will be harvested for food and plant cultivation, and waste materials will be processed in a composting microbial ecosystem. Transpired water from plants will be condensed and recycled. In our thermal design and analysis for the Martian greenhouse, we addressed the question of whether temperature and pressure would be maintained in the appropriate range for humans as well as plants. Energy flow and material circulation should be controlled to provide an artificial ecological system on Mars. In our analysis, we assumed that the greenhouse would be maintained at a subatmospheric pressure under 1/3-G gravitational force with 1/2 solar light intensity on Earth. Convection of atmospheric gases will be induced inside the greenhouse, primarily by heating from sunlight. Microclimate (thermal and gas species structure) could be generated locally around plant bodies, which would affect gas transport. Potential effects of those environmental factors are discussed on the phenomena including plant growth and plant physiology and focusing on transport processes. Fire safety is a crucial issue and we evaluate its impact on the total gas pressure in the greenhouse dome.

Abstract
Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against Francisella tularensis were obtained. Three MAbs specifically reacted with F. tularensis, while four MAbs reacted with other members of the genus Francisella as well. Fluorescent isothiocyanate-conjugated MAbs unequivocally stained bacterial cells in specimens from experimentally infected mice. Two MAbs agglutinated F. tularensis antigen in the agglutination tests. These MAbs should improve methods for detection and identification of F. tularensis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association of job strain (as defined by the job demands/control model) and worksite support with nutrient intake is not clear. METHODS A questionnaire survey was conducted of 25,104 workers employed in nine companies in Japan. Job strain and worksite support were assessed using the Job Content Questionnaire. Daily intake of 17 nutrients was measured using a dietary history questionnaire. Data from 15,295 men and 2,853 women were analyzed, controlling for age, education, marital status, occupation, and study site. RESULTS Among men, job strain was positively associated with average daily intakes of fat, vitamin E, cholesterol, poly- and mono-unsaturated fatty acids (p for trend<0.05), and worksite support was positively associated with average daily intakes of total energy, crude fiber, retinol, carotene, vitamins A, C, and E, cholesterol, and saturated fatty acid (p for trend<0.05). Among women, worksite support was positively associated with average daily intakes of total energy, protein, vitamin E, and polyunsaturated fatty acid (p for trend<0.05). However these differences were generally small. CONCLUSIONS The present study showed that job strain and worksite support were only weakly and inconsistently associated with nutritional intakes. It does not seem that changes in nutritional intakes explain the association between job strain or worksite support and coronary heart disease.

Abstract
The facultative intracellular bacterium, Francisella tularensis, is an etiological agent of tularemia and is also considered to be a potential biological threat agent due to its extreme infectivity. We established a real-time PCR assay using the LightCycler (LC) system to detect a Francisella-specific sequence of the outer membrane protein (fopA) gene. Twenty-five F. tularensis strains including 16 Japanese isolates were subjected to this LC-PCR assay, and were tested positive, whereas Francisella philomiragia and other bacteria species did not show any specific fluorescent signal. A linear response was observed using F. tularensis genomic DNAs of between 20 fg and 2 ng, corresponding to 1.2 to 1.2 x 10(5) bacteria. The newly established real-time PCR allows the detection of the F. tularensis genome specifically, sensitively, and rapidly. This assay may contribute to the standardization of the laboratory diagnosis of tularemia.

Abstract
Social support is supposed to have a positive health effect via alteration of immunity. In this study, associations between perceived social support and immune systems were examined. Immunological assessments, e.g. T cell count, Natural Killer cell count, Interferon-gamma, Interleukin-4, and psychological assessments, e.g. Generic Job Stress Questionnaire were conducted on male employees. Two-way (social support x job stressor) analyses of covariance controlling for age, smoking, alcohol consumption, and exercise revealed that there were main effects of perceived social support on NK cell counts, IL-4, and Th1/Th2 balance. On the other hand, interaction effects were observed on T cell counts and INF-gamma production in vitro. Social support affects immune function in a way that is consistent with both the direct and buffering hypotheses depending on the sources of support and the immune parameter.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Radical prostatectomy is a common procedure for the treatment of clinically localized prostate cancer. However, urinary incontinence is a significant potential source of morbidity following surgery. Extracorporeal magnetic stimulation (ExMS) is a new technology used for pelvic muscle strengthening in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. We investigated the clinical effects of ExMS on urinary incontinence after retropubic radical prostatectomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS Ten patients who had suffered from urinary incontinence for more than 12 months following radical prostatectomy were enrolled in this study. The Neocontrol system was used. Treatment sessions were for 20 min, twice a week for 2 months. The frequency of the pulse field was 10 Hz for 10 min, followed by a second treatment at 50 Hz for 10 min. Objective and subjective measures included voiding diaries, 1-hour pad weight testing, and a quality of life survey at 1, 2, 3, and 6 months after starting the treatment. Urodynamic studies were performed before and after treatment. RESULTS Three patients became dry (30%), 3 patients improved (30%), and 4 patients showed stationary symptoms (40%). In the 1-hour pad weight testing, the mean pad weight decreased from 25 to 10.3 g, and the quality of life scores had improved from 70.5 to 84.9 2 months after treatment. The frequency of leak episodes per day was reduced from 5.0 times before to 1.9 times after treatment. In the urodynamic study, mean maximum cystometric capacity and Valsalva leak point pressure increased from 197 +/- 53.2 to 309 +/- 85.3 ml and from 67.3 +/- 22.6 to 97.1 +/- 22.7 cm H2O after treatment, respectively (p < 0.05). 3 of 6 patients who showed improvement returned to the baseline values within 12 months after treatment and requested maintenance ExMS therapy. No side effects were observed. CONCLUSIONS ExMS therapy offered a new option for urinary incontinence treatment after radical prostatectomy. Further studies are required to determine how long the benefits of treatment last and whether maintenance therapy is necessary.

Abstract
By determining the nucleotide sequences of more than 700 cDNA clones isolated from 16 cynomolgus monkeys, we identified 26 Mafa-B alleles. In addition, nine sequences with similarity to Mamu-I alleles were identified. Since multiple Mafa-B alleles were found in each individual, it was strongly suggested that the cynomolgus MHC class I B locus might be duplicated and that the Mafa-I locus was derived from the B locus by gene duplication, as in the case of the Mamu-I locus of rhesus monkeys.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Extracorporeal magnetic innervation (ExMI) is a new technology used for pelvic muscle strengthening for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. We explored whether this new technology is effective for patients with urge incontinence, as well as those with stress urinary incontinence. METHODS We studied 20 patients with urge incontinence and 17 patients with stress urinary incontinence. The Neocontrol system (Neotonus Inc., Marietta, GA) was used. Treatment sessions were for 20 min, twice a week for 8 weeks. Evaluations were performed by bladder diaries, one-hour pad weight testing, quality-of-life surveys and urodynamic studies. RESULTS Of the urge incontinence cases, five patients were cured (25.0%), 12 patients improved (60.0%) and three patients did not show any improvement (15.0%). Leak episodes per day reduced from 5.6 times to 1.9 times at 8 weeks (P < 0.05). Eight patients with urge incontinence recurred within 24 weeks after the last treatment (47.1%). Of the stress incontinence cases, nine patients were cured (52.9%), seven patients improved (41.1%) and one patient did not show any improvement (6%). In one-hour pad weight testing, the mean pad weight reduced from 7.9 g to 1.9 g at 8 weeks (P < 0.05). Three patients returned to the baseline values within 24 weeks after the last treatment (17.6%). No side-effects were experienced by any of the patients. CONCLUSION Although the results for urge incontinence were less effective than for stress urinary incontinence, ExMI therapy offers a new option for urge incontinence as well as stress urinary incontinence.

Abstract
PURPOSE Resiniferatoxin (RTX) is a specific C fiber neurotoxin which produces desensitization. In this study we performed intravesical RTX therapy in patients with idiopathic detrusor overactivity. In addition we measured the current perception threshold of C and A delta fibers before and after treatment to evaluate clinical significance. MATERIALS AND METHODS The protocol involved an RTX solution (100 ml of 50 nM) instilled in the bladder for 30 minutes. Four men and 6 women 59 to 75 years old were treated. Effects on bladder function were evaluated before and 30 days after treatment by cystometry and Neurometer (Neurotron, Inc., Baltimore, Maryland). Subjective and objective measures included bladder diaries and quality of life before treatment, and 7, 30 and 90 days subsequently. RESULTS Of the 10 patients 5 noted improvement and 2 of them became dry. The other 5 patients were considered to have stationary symptoms. Mean maximal cystometric capacity +/- SD increased from 229 +/- 108 ml at baseline to 271 +/- 99.5 ml at 30 days (p = 0.04). The mean number of daily episodes of urinary incontinence decreased from 3.5 +/- 2.2 to 2.0 +/- 1.6 (p = 0.008) at 7 days, to 1.9 +/- 1.6 (p = 0.018) at 30 days and to 2.5 +/- 1.7 (p = 0.018) at 90 days. Mean current perception threshold values of C and A delta fibers did not change significantly, from 46.9 +/- 35.2 to 56.4 +/- 32.1 (p = 0.161) and from 66.9 +/- 31.7 to 66.4 +/- 25.2 (p = 0.952), respectively. However, values of C fibers increased in all patients who showed improvement from 46.2 +/- 33.2 to 64.0 +/- 36.8 (p = 0.043). CONCLUSIONS Intravesical RTX improved bladder capacity and leak episodes in patients with idiopathic detrusor overactivity. Intravesical RTX is a promising treatment for this condition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To perform a randomized comparative study to investigate the clinical effects of extracorporeal magnetic innervation (ExMI) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) on urinary incontinence after retropubic radical prostatectomy. METHODS Thirty-six patients with urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy were randomly assigned to three groups (12 patients each in the FES, ExMI, and control groups). For FES, an anal electrode was used. Pulses of 20-Hz square waves at a 300-micros pulse duration were used for 15 minutes twice daily for 1 month. For ExMI, the Neocontrol system was used. The treatment sessions were for 20 minutes, twice a week for 2 months. The frequency of the pulse field was 10 Hz for 10 minutes, followed by a second treatment at 50 Hz for 10 minutes. For the control group, only pelvic floor muscle exercises were performed. Objective measures included bladder diaries, 24-hour pad weight testing, and a quality-of-life survey, at 1, 2, and 4 weeks and 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 months after removing the catheter. RESULTS The leakage weight during the 24 hours after removing the catheter was 684, 698, and 664 g for the FES, ExMI, and control groups, respectively. At 1 month, it was 72, 83, and 175 g (FES versus control, P <0.05) and at 2 months was 54, 18, and 92 g (ExMI versus control, P <0.05) in the FES, ExMI, and control groups, respectively. Finally, 6 months later, the average 24-hour leakage weight was less than 10 g in all groups. Quality-of-life measures decreased after surgery, but gradually improved over time in all groups. No complications were noted in any of the groups. CONCLUSIONS ExMI and FES therapies offered earlier continence compared with the control group after radical prostatectomy. We consider ExMI and FES to be recommendable options for patients who want quick improvement of postoperative urinary incontinence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: The relationship between occupational class and exposure to job stressors among employed men and women in Japan remains unclear. METHODS: Data of 16,444 men and 3,078 women were analyzed. The information was obtained from answers to a questionnaire distributed among employees of nine companies in Japan between 1996 and 1998 (average response rate, 85%). The International Standardized Classification of Occupations was used to classify respondents into eight occupational categories. The Job Content Questionnaire was used to measure job demands, job control, worksite support, and job insecurity. The associations between occupational class and job stressors, as well as job strain, were examined controlling for age, education, marital status, chronic medical condition, and personality traits, such as neuroticism and extraversion. RESULTS: Men and women in high-class occupations (e.g., managers and professionals) had significantly greater job control, while job demands and worksite social support were not greatly different among occupations. A clear occupational class gradient in job insecurity was observed in women. A greater prevalence of high job strain was observed in low-class occupations compared to high-class occupations in both men and women. The occupational class gradient in job strain was greater for women. These patterns did not change after controlling for other covariates. CONCLUSION: The present study suggests an occupational class gradient in job strain for employed men and women in Japan. Japanese women workers may have a greater occupational class gradient in job strain and job insecurity than men.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Insomnia is associated with physical and mental disorders. We examined the effect of insomnia on immune functions, focusing on the T helper 1 (Th1)/ T helper 2 (Th2) balance, by a cross-sectional design. METHODS We provided a self-administered questionnaire to evaluate sleep habits, smoking and medical disorders to 578 men without any toxic exposure (20-64 years old), and measured natural killer (NK) cell activity in 324 men and production of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) after stimulation with phytohemagglutinin in 254 men. According to the criteria of DSM-IV, in which insomnia is classified into primary and secondary insomnia, we assessed the effect of insomnia on immune functions, controlling for age and smoking in groups with and without medical disorders. RESULTS The prevalence of insomnia in the present study was 9.2%. In the absence of medical disorders, insomniac men had a significantly lower IFN-gamma and ratio of IFN-gamma to IL-4 than noninsomniac men. Men with insufficient sleep or difficulty initiating sleep (DIS) had a significantly lower IFN-gamma to IL-4 ratio than those not suffering from insufficient sleep or DIS. In the presence of medical disorders, insomniac men had significantly higher IL-4 than noninsomniac men. Men with difficulty maintaining sleep (DMS) had a significantly lower IFN-gamma to IL-4 ratio than men without DMS. NK cell activity was independent of insomnia. CONCLUSIONS The present results showed a link between insomnia unrelated to medical disorders and a shift in the Th1/Th2 balance toward Th2 dominance, indicating that the relationship between sleep quality and the etiology of immune-related diseases should be reconsidered.

Abstract
Because the glandular content rate is an important factor in evaluating breast cancer detection and average glandular dose, it is important in mammography research to estimate and analyze this rate. The purpose of this study was to obtain a formula for statistical estimation of the glandular content rate, to clarify statistically the influence of age group and compressed breast thickness (CBT) on estimating the glandular content rate, and to show statistically the general relation between glandular content rate and the factors of age and CBT. The subjects were 740 Japanese women aged 20-91 years (mean+/-SD: 48.3+/-12.8 years) who had undergone mammography. In our study, the glandular content rate was statistically estimated from age group, mAs-value, and CBT when subjects underwent mammography, from a phantom simulation, and from MR images of the breast. In addition, multivariate analysis was carried to examine statistically the influence of age group and CBT on glandular content rate. The mean glandular content rate as estimated by age group was as follows: 35.6% for those in their 20s, 33.4% in the 30s, 27.5% in the 40s, 23.8% in the 50s, and 21.8% in those 60 and over. The rate for the subjects as a whole was 27.1%. This study indicated that overestimation occurred if the estimated value of the glandular content rate was not corrected in the 3D-measurement by MRI. In addition, this study showed that the statistical influence on glandular content rate was significantly larger for CBT than age.

Abstract
Mental fatigue in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) was investigated and compared with subjects without OSAS. The study series comprised 189 habitual snoring patients and 75 controls. To measure subjective mental fatigue and somnolence, subjects were asked to complete the Maastricht Questionnaire (MQ) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), respectively, and patients also underwent diagnostic polysomnography. According to the apnea and hypopnea index, patients were classified into the following groups: primary snorers, or having mild, moderate, or severe OSAS. The lowest MQ and highest ESS scores were found in those patients with severe OSAS. It is proposed that the lowest MQ score is due to mental fatigue impairing awareness in patients with severe OSAS, probably because of attention loss.

Abstract
The 92 kDa type VI collagenase (matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9)) activities on zymography assay were found to be 1-6 times higher in benign tumor breast tissues of 12 canines and 4-26 times higher in adenocarcinoma breast tissues of nine canines than that of control tissues, respectively. A full-length canine MMP-9 cDNA was cloned from the adenocarcinoma tissue by reverse transcription-PCR and 5'- and 3'-RACE. The isolated cDNA contained an open reading frame coding for a polypeptide of 704 amino acids. The predicted protein sequence displayed extensive similarity to that of known MMP-9s and contained a putative signal sequence, a propeptide, an active site with three zinc-binding histidine residues, a calcium-binding domain, a hemopexin region, and three key cysteine residues. Western blotting using MMP-9-specific antibodies prepared against the peptide corresponding to Arg(642)-Asp(704) of canine MMP-9 and Northern blotting using a MMP-9-specific cDNA fragment as a probe confirmed that MMP-9 (the 92 kDa protein band) was highly expressed in canine mammary adenocarcinoma tissues. Higher levels of MMP-9 activity were found in the sera of canines with mammary adenocarcinoma. The results indicated that MMP-9 plays an important role in the progression of a canine mammary tumor and that assay of serum MMP-9 is helpful for early diagnosis as progress of adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the association between job strain (defined in the model of job demands and job control) and social support at the workplace with levels of glycosylated haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) METHODS All male employees aged 40-60 in a manufacturing firm, Japan, were invited to take part in the study. A blood sample was taken from the participants and HbA1c (%) was measured. Job strain and social support at the workplace were assessed with the job content questionnaire (JCQ). After excluding those who had a history of diabetes mellitus or other chronic diseases, data from 268 male day workers were analyzed. RESULTS Age adjusted average concentrations of HbA1c were significantly higher in the highest quartile group of job strain or the lowest quartile group of social support at the workplace (p<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that job strain was significantly and positively related to HbA1c (p<0.05), whereas social support at the workplace was significantly and negatively related to HbA1c (p<0.05), both after controlling for other covariates. CONCLUSIONS Greater job strain and lower social support at the workplace may be associated with increased concentrations of HbA1c. Increased blood glucose may be a physiological mediator between job strain or social support at the workplace and coronary heart disease.

Abstract
The number of required hidden units is statistically estimated for feedforward neural networks that are constructed by adding hidden units one by one. The output error decreases with the number of hidden units by an almost constant rate, if each appropriate hidden unit is selected out of a great number of candidate units. The expected value of the maximum decrease per hidden unit is estimated theoretically as a function of the number of learning data sets in relation to the number of candidates that are obtained by random search. This relation can be expanded to cover other searching methods. In such a case, the number of candidates implies how many steps might be required if random search were used instead. Therefore the number of candidates can be regarded as a parameter that represents the efficiency of the search. Computer simulation shows that estimating this parameter experimentally from the actual decrease in output error is useful for demonstrating the efficiency of the gradient search. It also shows the influence, on the number of hidden units, of the hidden unit's nonlinearity.

Abstract
Twelve species of nematodes comprising 9 genera were recovered from the gastrointestinal tract of 2 Euphractus sexcinctus and 2 Dasypus novemcinctus captured in the Department of San Pedro, Paraguay. All armadillos were infected with 1 or more species of nematode. The following nematodes were recovered: Mazzia mazzia, Spirura guianensis, Trichohelix tuberculata, Ancylostoma sp., Moennigia complexus, Moennigia pintoi, Ascaris dasypodina, Cruzia tentaculata, Aspidodera fasciata, Aspidodera scoleciformis, Aspidodera esperanzae n. sp., and Heterakinae gen. sp. This report describes a new species of the Aspidodera nematode, Aspidodera esperanzae n. sp., the first species to be reported bearing cephalic cordons made up of 7 longitudinal loops in the subfamily of Aspidoderinae. This study also documents a new host record for S. guianensis and shows a new geographical distribution in Paraguay for M. mazzia, S. guianensis, T. tuberculata, M. complexus, and M. pintoi.
