Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The signal intensity of the thyroid in neonates is high on T1WI. It is affected by gestational and postnatal ages. However, the extent of the influence of these ages is unknown. This study investigated the relationship of signal intensities of the infant thyroid with postnatal and gestational ages and anterior pituitary using 3D gradient-echo T1WI. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 183 T1-weighted images from 181 infants. Using a multiple linear regression analysis, we evaluated the effects of postnatal and gestational ages on the thyroid-muscle signal intensity ratio. The relationship between the thyroid and anterior pituitary signal intensities on T1WI and the age of the infants was evaluated. RESULTS Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the thyroid signal intensity was affected negatively by postnatal age at examination and positively by gestational age at birth (P < .01 and P = .04, respectively). According to the standardized partial regression coefficients, the influence of postnatal age at examination was stronger than that of gestational age at birth (-0.72 and 0.13, respectively). The thyroid and anterior pituitary signal intensities reached constant values at 12 weeks' postnatal age, and the mean thyroid-anterior pituitary signal intensity ratios were almost 1 throughout the entire period. CONCLUSIONS The signal intensity of the infant thyroid on T1WI was more strongly influenced by the postnatal age at examination than the gestational age at birth, and it was almost equal to that of the anterior pituitary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Previous studies have suggested that use of an artificial neural network (ANN) system is beneficial for radiological diagnosis. Our purposes in this study were to construct an ANN for the differential diagnosis of intra-axial cerebral tumors on MR images and to evaluate the effect of ANN outputs on radiologists' diagnostic performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS We collected MR images of 126 patients with intra-axial cerebral tumors (58 high-grade gliomas, 37 low-grade gliomas, 19 metastatic tumors, and 12 malignant lymphomas). We constructed a single 3-layer feed-forward ANN with a Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The ANN was designed to differentiate among 4 categories of tumors (high-grade gliomas, low-grade gliomas, metastases, and malignant lymphomas) with use of 2 clinical parameters and 13 radiologic findings in MR images. Subjective ratings for the 13 radiologic findings were provided independently by 2 attending radiologists. All 126 cases were used for training and testing of the ANN based on a leave-one-out-by-case method. In the observer test, MR images were viewed by 9 radiologists, first without and then with ANN outputs. Each radiologist's performance was evaluated through a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis on a continuous rating scale. RESULTS The averaged area under the ROC curve for ANN alone was 0.949. The diagnostic performance of the 9 radiologists increased from 0.899 to 0.946 (P < .001) when they used ANN outputs. CONCLUSIONS The ANN can provide useful output as a second opinion to improve radiologists' diagnostic performance in the differential diagnosis of intra-axial cerebral tumors seen on MR imaging.

Abstract
Interaction of tea catechins with lipid bilayers has been investigated with liposome systems. Tea catechins are classified into cis-type and trans-type from the configuration of the two hydrogens at the 2 and 3 positions on the C-ring. The amount of trans-type catechins incorporated into liposomes was less than that of the respective cis-type catechins. Furthermore, the order of the partition coefficients of catechins in an n-octanol/PBS system is the same as that of the amount incorporated into liposomes. These results indicate that in addition to the number of hydroxyl groups on the B-ring and the presence of the galloyl moiety, the stereochemical structure of the C-ring also governs the hydrophobicity and the affinity for lipid bilayers. Trans-type catechins with the galloyl moiety were located on the surface of the lipid bilayer, as well as cis-type catechins with the galloyl moiety, and perturbed the membrane structure. These different stereochemical structures should influence the affinity for lipid bilayers, the alteration of membrane structures, and the difference in the order of the biological activities.

Abstract
The H atoms bonded to the chiral C atoms (stereogenic center) of the 1-cyanoethyl groups in two cobalt complexes, [(R)-1-cyanoethyl]bis(dimethylglyoximato)(pyridine)cobalt(III) (2) and [(R,S)-1-cyanoethyl]bis(dimethylglyoximato)(piperidine)cobalt(III) (3), were replaced with D atoms, such as Co--C*D(CH(3))CN. The crystals of the two cobalt complexes were irradiated with a xenon lamp for 72 h and 27 d, respectively. The unit-cell dimensions were gradually changed with retention of the single-crystal form. The crystal structures after irradiation were determined by neutron diffraction. In each crystal the chiral 1-cyanoethyl group of one of the two crystallographically independent molecules was partly inverted to the opposite configuration, whereas that of the other molecule kept the original configuration. The C*--D bond in the inverted group was completely conserved in the process of the inversion of the chiral alkyl group. This suggests that the inversion of the chiral 1-cyanoethyl group proceeds with the rotation of the cyanoethyl radical after the Co--C bond cleavage by photo-irradiation so that the opposite side of the radical faces the Co atom. This is followed by recombination of the Co--C bond to form the inverted 1-cyanoethyl group.

Abstract
The accumulation of fluorescent age pigment or lipofuscin is a frequently observed age-associated cellular alteration in a variety of postmitotic cells of many species. These pigments are observed within granules composed, in part, of damaged protein and lipid. Modification of various biomolecules by aldehyde products of lipid peroxidation is believed to contribute to lipofuscin and ceroid formation. In the present study, we raised a monoclonal antibody (MAb 1F83) directed to the malondialdehyde-modified protein and identified a lipofuscin-like dihydropyridine fluorophore as the major epitope. This antibody was used to conclusively demonstrate that the fluorophore forms on oxidatively modified low density lipoproteins. In addition, we demonstrated that the materials immunoreactive to MAb 1F83 indeed constituted the atherosclerotic lesions, in which intense positivity was associated primarily with macrophage-derived foam cells. The results of this study suggest that the reaction between the lipid peroxidation-derived aldehyde and primary amino groups of protein might represent a process common to the formation of the lipofuscin-like fluorophore during aging and its related diseases.

Abstract
We compared the lipophilicity and toxicity of the four flavonols, galangin, kaempferol, quercetin and myricetin, which respectively have no, one, two and three hydroxyl groups on the B-ring. The lipophilicity was in the order of myricetin < quercetin < kaempferol < galangin. The cytotoxicity determined by a colony-formation assay with Chinese hamster lung fibroblast V79 cells was in the order of quercetin < kaempferol < galangin < myricetin. Apart from myricetin, the order of lipophilicity was the same as that of cytotoxicity, implying that the cytotoxicity was attributable to the lipophilicity. The cytotoxicity of myricetin was attributable to the hydrogen peroxide formed by autoxidation.

Abstract
Eriocitrin, a flavonoid glycoside present in lemon fruit, is metabolized in vivo to a series of eriodictyol, methylated eriodictyol, 3,4-dihydroxyhydrocinnamic acid, and their conjugates. Plasma antioxidant activity increased following oral administration of aqueous eriocitrin solutions to rats. Eriocitrin metabolites were found in plasma and renal excreted urine through HPLC and LC-MS analyses. Eriocitrin was not detected in plasma and urine, but eriodictyol, homoeriodictyol, and hesperetin in their conjugated forms were detected in plasma of 4.0 h following administration of eriocitrin. In urine for 24 h, both nonconjugates and conjugates of these metabolites were detected. 3,4-Dihydroxyhydrocinnamic acid, which is metabolized from eriodictyol by intestinal bacteria, was detected in slight amounts with each form in 4.0-h plasma and 24-h urine. Eriocitrin was suggested to be metabolized by intestinal bacteria, and then eriodictyol and 3,4-dihydroxyhydrocinnamic of its metabolite were absorbed. Following administration of eriocitrin, plasma exhibited an elevated resistance effect to lipid peroxidation. Eriocitrin metabolites functioning as antioxidant agents are discussed.

Abstract
Three galloyl monosaccharides contained in medicinal plants were examined for apoptosis-inducing activity in human histiocytic lymphoma U937 cells. Tetragalloyl glucose (TgG) induced apoptosis as found by chromatin condensation, DNA ladder formation, and inhibition by a caspase inhibitor. Digalloyl hamamelose had moderate activity, while monogalloyl glucose was only marginally active. These findings suggest that the number and disposition of their phenolic groups are important for apoptosis induction. TgG induced apoptosis in human colon and stomach cancer cell lines as well, indicating it is potentially useful as an anti-cancer agent.

Abstract
The energy dependence of gamma-ray sensitivity of a neutron imaging plate (NIP) has been measured. The gamma-ray sensitivity is equivalent to one half that of a thermal neutron at a gamma-ray energy less than 300 keV, and 1/40 at greater than 300 keV. The shielding of the NIP, by lead, from gamma rays in the experimental hall of the reactor JRR-3M of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) was measured. It was found that lead of thickness 40 mm is sufficient to reduce the gamma-ray background to 1/10 on a normalized scale. Covering the NIP with lead foil of thickness 1 mm results in a decrease of the gamma-ray background without reduction of the neutron signal.

Abstract
A sustained-release drug delivery system was developed using a hydroxyapatite (HA) block loaded with adriamycin (ADR) by cenrifugation. Release of ADR was sustained for 66 days in vitro and for 4 weeks in vivo following intramuscular implantation in mice. ADR concentrations in plasma, liver, and kidney were from 0.25% to 10% of that at the implantation site. ADR-HA blocks implanted into osteogenic sarcomas in mice markedly inhibited tumor growth. This drug delivery system provides sustained release of the cancer chemotherapeutic agent and may prove useful for treating malignant tumours while minimising systemic side effects.

Abstract
We have investigated an electrochemical method of detecting foods that cause an allergic reaction. Rat basophilic leukaemia (RBL-1) cells were sensitized with serum from a rat that was allergic to wheat. A sample containing the protein fraction of a food was added to the cells and incubated. The cells were immobilized on a membrane filter and attached to a basal-plane pyrolytic graphite electrode. When a potential was applied in the range 0-1.0 V relative to a saturated calomel electrode, an anodic peak current appeared at around 0.33 V. This peak current, attributed to serotonin, increased with time, and the maximum current (0.5 microA) was obtained 20-25 min of incubation. The response of the RBL-1 cells was specific to the protein fraction of wheat. The peak current increased linearly with increasing protein concentration in the range of 0.01-0.5 micrograms ml-1. These results suggest that the concentration of the protein bringing about the allergic reaction can be determined by cyclic voltammetry within 25 min. This method is more sensitive than the conventional skin tests.

Abstract
A novel drug delivery system for osteomyelitis was developed using porous hydroxyapatite blocks (HA-b) loaded with antibiotics by centrifugation. In the study, 10 mm3 HA-b was placed in a container and mixed with antibiotic solution; the antibiotic was then loaded into the pores of the HA-b by centrifuging at 1500 rpm for 15 min. Slow release of HA-b in both moist form and dried form (by heating at 160 degrees C) was tested after loading with the antibiotic arbekacin sulfate (ABK), 1-N-(S)-4 amino-2-hydroxybutyryl dibekacin. To estimate the concentration of antibiotic, both forms of HA-b were placed in 3 mL of phosphate buffered saline (PBS), which was replaced every 48 h. In both groups, which were loaded with 70 mg ABK per one block of HA (concn 0.5 microgram/mL) which is sufficiently high to control most pathogens, was maintained for 21 exchanges of PBS (after 42 days). Minimum inhibitory concentration for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), 3.13 micrograms/mL, was maintained until nine exchanges took place (after 18 days). The centrifugation method is simple, and dried ABK produced by heating loaded HA-b is particularly useful in clinical applications for osteomyelitis.

Abstract
Aibellin is a 20-residue peptide antibiotic that has been isolated from the fungus Verticimonosporium ellipticum. Sequence-specific assignment of the 1H- and 13C-NMR signals of aibellin in a methanol solution was achieved by using the two-dimensional NMR technique. Furthermore, its secondary structure was characterized by circular dichroism (CD) and NOESY spectra. The observed NOEs, 3JNHC alpha H coupling constants and amide hydrogen-deuterium (H-D) exchange rates show that the peptide consisted of two alpha-helices and a bent structure around a Pro-14 residue.

Abstract
Aibellin was administered in feed to goats (16 to 18 kg of BW) for 12 d. At 80 mg/d, the molar percentage of propionate in rumen fluid increased significantly in 8 d, and the effect lasted for as long as 10 d after administration ceased. Total VFA concentration, protozoa numbers, and NDF digestibility were not depressed significantly at this dosage but were reduced at 100 mg/d with little further increase in the molar percentage of propionate. Therefore, the optimal dosage of aibellin was 80 mg/d under our experimental conditions. In contrast, monensin (30 mg/d) and gramicidin D (60 mg/d) decreased total VFA concentration and protozoa numbers when supplemented to obtain molar percentages of propionate comparable to 80 mg/d of aibellin. From these results, aibellin may be easier and safer to use than monensin and gramicidin D to modify rumen fermentation.

Abstract
A new peptide antibiotic, aibellin, that had the efficiency enhancing activity on rumen fermentation, was isolated from the culture broth of the fungus, Verticimonosporium ellipticum D1528, and its primary structure was elucidated from spectrometric analysis and chemical degradation. Aibellin is a 20-residue peptaibol, and it has a unique structural feature in the novel C-terminal amino alcohol. Moreover, aibellin is the first peptaibol that possesses two acidic amino acids in the C-terminal region and a Phe residue in the middle of the sequence.

Abstract
Recently, the linear-quadratic equation has been used to construct the dose-response relationships of ionizing radiation. The radiobiological theory on which this relationship is based indicates that at low doses, the risk of a biological lesion being formed should depend linearly on dose if a single event is required or quadratically on dose if two events are required. The same approach has also been used to construct the shouldered survival curves, which indicate a lower response of cell killing at low doses of low linear energy transfer (LET) radiation than at high doses because of repair. However, a different approach is possible, derived from the concept of generating the hybrid lognormal distribution, in which the hybrid form of linear and logarithmic components of a random variable is used. The hybrid form is a formulation of the phenomenon in which there is a feedback mechanism against the large change in the random variable. This paper presents a new model of shouldered survival curves, called a hybrid scale model, which has two parameters: the inactivation constant and the protective factor. In the model, the surviving fraction, normalized by a protective factor plotted in a hybrid scale, is assumed to be linear against the dose. This simple model provides an implication of the shoulder of survival curve and the effect of recovery time of radiation damage, as well as giving a good to the well-known data of split-dose experiments with mammalian cells.

Abstract
A novel drug delivery system was developed for osteomyelitis using porous hydroxyapatite blocks (HA-b) that were impregnated with antibiotics by a centrifuge method. For the experimental study, a 10 mm3 HA-b was placed in a container, mixed with an antibiotic solution and centrifuged at 1500 rpm for 15 min for the purpose of impregnating antibiotics into the pores. The slow release activity of antibiotic (Arbekacin sulfate [1-N-(S)-4 amino-2-hydroxybutyryl dibekacin]) from the HA-b was tested. An evaluation was made of the slow-releasing capabilities of the ABK from HA-b which was still maintained at 0.5 microgram/ml within 21 exchanges of PBS after 42 days. Consequently, seven patients with osteomyelitis, including one with tuberculosis and two with infected hip arthroplasty, have been treated. On a follow-up study, all of the foci had completely healed by the end of the follow-up period without complications. This new method is simple and can be performed safety as a one-stage operation.

Abstract
A 71-year-old woman with an hepatic cyst that led to obstructive jaundice is reported. Percutaneous intracystic fluid aspiration was useful in transiently decreasing the jaundice. Thereafter, the cyst was extirpated, and was found to be large (nearly 10 cm), benign and non-parasitic. This patient and 15 similar cases reported in the literature, indicate that the risk of jaundice induced by a simple hepatic cyst is related to its size (larger than 10 cm) and location near the common hepatic duct.

Abstract
A new icosapeptide, aibellin, markedly modified rumen fermentation in vitro. Batch culture experiments with mixed rumen microorganisms showed that 12.5 to 25 mg/L of aibellin enhanced propionate production and reduced methanogenesis without significantly affecting production of total VFA, protozoal survival, or cellulose digestion. Aibellin had essentially the same effects in continuous culture with hay powder and concentrate. Monensin (5 mg/L) had similar effects on propionate production and methanogenesis, but total VFA, protozoa, and cellulolysis were decreased even by this low concentration of monensin. Commercially available peptide antibiotics also were compared with aibellin. Of the antibiotics examined, only graminicidin D (7.5 to 15 mg/L) enhanced propionate production and reduced methanogenesis. However, gramicidin D decreased total VFA, protozoa, and cellulolysis even at 7.5 mg/L. Alamethicin (7.5 to 15 mg/L), which resembles aibellin in its structure, did not increase propionate production but raised the percentage of propionate because of reduced production of total VFA. Alamethicin depressed methanogenesis but also decreased protozoal survival and cellulose digestion. These in vitro experiments indicate that aibellin could be a useful and potent modifier of rumen fermentation.

Abstract
A 64-year-old woman with mild bilateral parotid gland swelling and bilateral lower extremity purpura was admitted for evaluation of xerostomia and pancytopenia. The patient had an increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate, pancytopenia, and positive tests for antibodies to nuclear antigen, SS-A, and SS-B. Impaired cell-mediated immunity was also present. Bone marrow aspiration showed a hypoplastic marrow with an increased percentage of lymphocytes. A positive Schirmer's test and keratoconjunctivitis were also noted. A diagnosis of primary Sjögren's syndrome was made by sialography and histological salivary gland findings. Therapy with prednisolone improved the pancytopenia. Addition of the patient's peripheral blood mononuclear cells to cultures of bone marrow mononuclear cells derived from a healthy volunteer dose dependently inhibited colony formation, including mixed hemopoietic colonies. On the other hand, addition of the patient's serum failed to inhibit colony formation by normal bone marrow mononuclear cells. These results suggested that one of the causes of pancytopenia in primary Sjögren's syndrome might be mediated by the inhibition of mononuclear cells to the hemopoietic progenitors.

Abstract
Novel antifungal antibiotics, designated as dactylfungins A (1) and B (3), were isolated from the culture broth of Dactylaria parvispora D500. Dactylfungins A and B were found to be new substances containing an alpha-pyrone and a gamma-pyrone ring, respectively, which conjoined with a polyalcohol moiety and a long side chain, based on NMR spectral analyses. The antibiotics were active against Candida pseudotropicalis and other fungi, with an MIC value at less than 10 micrograms/ml.

Abstract
Heterocystous filamentous cyanobacterium
Anabaena cylindrica
B629 and nonheterocystous filamentous cyanobacterium
Oscillatoria
sp. strain Miami BG7 were cultured in media with N
2
as the sole nitrogen source; and activities of oxygen-dependent hydrogen uptake, photohydrogen production, photooxygen evolution, and respiration were compared amperometrically under the same or similar experimental conditions for both strains. Distinct differences in these activities were observed in both strains. The rates of hydrogen photoproduction and hydrogen accumulation were significantly higher in
Oscillatoria
sp. strain BG7 than in
A. cylindrica
B629 at every light intensity tested. The major reason for the difference was attributable to the fact that the heterocystous cyanobacterium had a high rate of oxygen-dependent hydrogen consumption activity and the nonheterocystous cyanobacterium did not. The activity of oxygen photoevolution and respiration also contributed to the difference.
Oscillatoria
sp. strain BG7 had lower O

evolution and higher respiration than did
A. cylindrica
B629. Thus, the effect of O
2
on hydrogen photoproduction was minimized in
Oscillatoria
sp. strain BG7.

Abstract
Whole cells of photoanaerobically grown Chromatium sp. strain Miami PBS1071, a marine sulfur purple bacterium, oxidized H2 in the dark through the oxyhydrogen reaction at rates of up to 59 nmol of H2 per mg (dry weight) per min. H2 oxidation was routinely measured in H2 pulse experiments with air-equilibrated cells. The reaction was accompanied by a reversible H+ efflux from the cells, suggesting an outward H+ translocation reaction coupled to H2 oxidation. The H+/e- ratio, calculated from simultaneous measurements of H2, O2, and H+ changes in the medium, varied with the cultures from 0.7 to 1.2. The ratio increased considerably when the backflow of H+ was taken into account. Anaerobic H2 uptake with 2,5-dimethyl-p-benzoguinone as an oxidant also showed a weak H+-translocating activity. No H+-translocating activity was detected with methylene blue as an oxidant. Carbonylcyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone (1 microM) stimulated H2 oxidation and abolished the associated H+ changes when H2 oxidation was observed in O2 pulse experiments with H2-Ar-equilibrated cells. However, the uncoupler inhibited both H2 oxidation and H+ changes when measurements were made in H2 pulse experiments with air-equilibrated cells. It is suggested that in this bacterium the susceptibility of hydrogenase to reversible O2 inactivation in situ is enhanced by the presence of uncoupling agents.

Abstract
Introduction of high flux-type dialyzers, such as the RP-6, makes it necessary to devise an ultrafiltration rate controller for a single pass system. For this purpose, a new pre-set ultrafiltration rate controller has been developed and examined experimentally and clinically. The controller has twin chambers, each of which is divided into two symmetrical parts by a vertically-placed diaphragm. The diaphragm shifts repeatedly from right to left, aspirating in and driving out fresh or used dialysate alternately. If one removes a certain amount of used dialysate from a branch of the efferent line, negative pressure develops and aspirates an equal amount of water from the dialyzer. Therefore, extra dialysate obtained by a pump precisely reflects ultrafiltration rate. The controller has been used on five patients. The scheduled ultrafiltration rate was easily obtainable. The apparatus is also available for hemodiafiltration. Initial clinical trial has been promising.

Abstract
A hemodialysis-ultrafiltration system has been developed and evaluated. It may be used either as a conventional hemodialyzer or as a nondialytic ultrafilter. When used as a dialyzer an ultrafiltration controller is required to fix ultrafiltration rate at the desired level. Rates of low molecular solute removal are compatible with those observed in commercially available artificial kidney systems, higher clearances are obtained for middle molecules, and the rate of ultrafiltration can be controlled within narrowly prescribed limits.
