Assessment of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Soils Polluted by Chemical and Technogenic Ways with Poly-Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Heavy Metals

Anthropogenic activities are leaving lots of chemical footprints on the soil. It alters the physiochemical characteristics of the soil thereby modifying the natural soil microbiome. The prevalence of antimicrobial-resistance microbes in polluted soil has gained attention due to its obvious public health risks. This study focused on assessing the prevalence and distribution of antibiotic-resistance genes in polluted soil ecosystems impacted by industrial enterprises in southern Russia. Metagenomic analysis was conducted on soil samples collected from polluted sites using various approaches, and the prevalence of antibiotic-resistance genes was investigated. The results revealed that efflux-encoding pump sequences were the most widely represented group of genes, while genes whose products replaced antibiotic targets were less represented. The level of soil contamination increased, and there was an increase in the total number of antibiotic-resistance genes in proteobacteria, but a decrease in actinobacteria. The study proposed an optimal mechanism for processing metagenomic data in polluted soil ecosystems, which involves mapping raw reads by the KMA method, followed by a detailed study of specific genes. The study's conclusions provide valuable insights into the prevalence and distribution of antibiotic-resistance genes in polluted soils and have been illustrated in heat maps.

Nanomaterials and biochar mediated remediation of emerging contaminants

The unrestricted release of various toxic substances into the environment is a critical global issue, gaining increased attention in modern society. Many of these substances are pristine to various environmental compartments known as contaminants/emerging contaminants (ECs). Nanoparticles and emerging sorbents enhanced remediation is a compelling methodology exhibiting great potential in addressing EC-related issues and facilitating their elimination from the environment, particularly those compounds that demonstrate eco-toxicity and pose considerable challenges in terms of removal. It provides a novel technique enabling the secure and sustainable removal of various ECs, including persistent organic compounds, microplastics, phthalate, etc. This extensive review presents a critical perspective on the current advancements and potential outcomes of nano-enhanced remediation techniques such as photocatalysis, nano-sensing, nano-enhanced sorbents, bio/phyto-remediation, which are applied to clean-up the natural environment. In addition, when dealing with residual contaminants, special attention is paid to both health and environmental implications; therefore, an evaluation of the long-term sustainability of nano-enhanced remediation methods has been considered. The integrated mechanical approaches were thoroughly discussed and presented in graphical forms. Thus, the critical evaluation of the integrated use of most emerging remediation technologies will open a new dimension in environmental safety and clean-up program.

A critical review on fate, behavior, and ecotoxicological impact of zinc oxide nanoparticles on algae

The rapid inclusion of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in nanotechnology-based products over the last decade has generated a new threat in the apprehension of the environment. The massive use of zinc nanosized products will certainly be disposed of and be released, eventually entering the aquatic ecosystem, posing severe environmental hazards. Moreover, nanosized ZnO particles owing the larger surface area per volume exhibit different chemical interactions within the aquatic ecosystem. They undergo diverse potential transformations because of their unique physiochemical properties and the feature of receiving medium. Therefore, assessment of their impact is critical not only for scavenging the present situation but also for preventing unintended environmental hazards. Algae being a primary producer of the aquatic ecosystem help assess the risk of massive NPs usage in environmental health. Because of their nutritional needs and position at the base of aquatic food webs, algal indicators exhibit relatively unique information concerning ecosystem conditions. Moreover, algae are presently the most vital part of the circular economy. Hence, it is imperative to understand the physiologic, metabolic, and morphologic changes brought by the ZnO NPs to the algal cells along with the development of the mechanism imparting toxicity mechanism. We also need to develop an appropriate scientific strategy in the innovation process to restrain the exposure of NPs at safer levels. This review provides the details of ZnO NP interaction with algae. Moreover, their impact, mechanism, and factors affecting toxicity to the algae are discussed.

Transfer and Degradation of PAHs in the Soil-Plant System: A Review

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are highly toxic, persistent organic pollutants that threaten ecosystems and human health. Consistent monitoring is essential to minimize the entry of PAHs into plants and reduce food chain contamination. PAHs infiltrate plants through multiple pathways, causing detrimental effects and triggering diverse plant responses, ultimately increasing either toxicity or tolerance. Primary plant detoxification processes include enzymatic transformation, conjugation, and accumulation of contaminants in cell walls/vacuoles. Plants also play a crucial role in stimulating microbial PAHs degradation by producing root exudates, enhancing bioavailability, supplying nutrients, and promoting soil microbial diversity and activity. Thus, synergistic plant-microbe interactions efficiently decrease PAHs uptake by plants and, thereby, their accumulation along the food chain. This review highlights PAHs uptake pathways and their overall fate as contaminants of emerging concern (CEC). Understanding plant uptake mechanisms, responses to contaminants, and interactions with rhizosphere microbiota is vital for addressing PAH pollution in soil and ensuring food safety and quality.

Biogeochemical and microscopic studies of soil and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. plants affected by coal mine dumps

Developed areas of the coal industry are subjected to long-term anthropogenic impacts from the input and accumulation of overburdened coal material, containing potentially toxic heavy metals and metalloids (HMM). For the first time, comprehensive studies of soils and plants in the territory of the Donetsk coal basin were carried out using X-ray fluorescence, atomic absorption analysis, and electron microscopy. The observed changes in the soil redox conditions were characterized by a high sulfur content, and formations of new microphases of S-containing compounds: FeS2, PbFe6(SO4)4(OH)12, ZnSO4·nH2O, revealed the presence of technogenic salinization, increased Сorg content, and low pH contents. Exceedances of soil maximum permissible concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, and As in areas affected by coal dumps were apparent. As a consequence of long-term transformation of the environment with changes in properties and chemical pollution, a phytotoxic effect was revealed in Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud, accompanied by changes in ultrastructural and organization features of roots and leaves such as increases in root diameters and thickness of leaf blades. The changes in the ultrastructure of cell organelles: a violation of the grana formation process, an increase in the number of plastoglobules, a decrease in the number of mitochondrial cristae, and a reduction in the electron density of the matrix in peroxisomes were also observed. The accumulation of large electron-dense inclusions and membrane fragments in cell vacuoles was observed. Such ultrastructural changes may indicate the existence of a P. australis ecotype due to its long-term adaptation to the disturbed environment.

Phenanthrene uptake and translocation by Panicum miliaceum L. tissues: an experimental study in an artificial environment

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as priority organic pollutants, are capable of accumulation in plants. Phenanthrene (Phe) is one of the most abundant low-molecular-weight PAH in the environment which is commonly used as a model PAH in many phytoremediation studies and as a representative compound for all PAHs group. This paper highlights the uptake, translocation, and accumulation of Phe by growing proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) in a pot experiment, subjected to 500, 1000, 1500, and 2000 ppm of Phe treatment after 15 and 30 days. Phe naturally existed in P. miliaceum and its concentration showed a time-dependent reduction in treated plant tissues as well as in perlites. Phe concentration in shoots was higher than in roots. During the aging process, the uptake of Phe was diminished whereas translocation factor (TF) demonstrated an overall increasing trend among treatments. The shoot concentration factor (SCF) values were higher than those of root concentration factor (RCF) on both days 15 and 30 and the highest values for both parameters were achieved in 500 ppm of Phe. Both RCFs and SCFs generally tended to decrease with the increase of perlite Phe concentrations. These results suggested that Phe tended to transfer to the shoots and be metabolized there. The Phe concentration revealed a significant decline in all levels of treatment on both 15 (84 to 96%) and 30 (76 to 94%) days. Therefore, the presence of P. miliaceum was effective in promoting the phytoremediation of Phe polluted perlites.

Features of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon's spatial distribution in the soils of the Don River delta

PAHs are one of the most toxic organic compounds classes which is obligatory controlled all over the world. There is a luck of studies devoted to the PAHs levels and sources identification in the south of Russia. The features of the PAHs accumulation and spatial distribution in hydromorphic soils (Fluvisol) were studied on the example of the soils of the Don River delta floodplain landscapes. It has been shown that changes in the PAHs content in soils depended on the type and intensity of the emission source. A factor analysis and multivariate linear regression analysis were carried out to determine the features of the spatial distribution for individual PAH compounds, considering the properties of soils and typical differences in the emission source. The most polluted areas in the studied area located along the transit line of the long-distance tankers, where the content of the most toxic high molecular PAHs compounds reached 8862 ng g-1. As a result of regression analysis, a relationship was established between the PAHs accumulation rate with the content of silt (particles less than 0.001 mm in size) and Ca2+ and Mg2+ exchangeable cations in the soil (at p-level < 0.0001). Differences in individual PAH content for medium and heavy loamy Fluvisol and depend on the influence of different types of pollution sources.

A practical evaluation on integrated role of biochar and nanomaterials in soil remediation processes

Soil decontamination and restoration continue to be a key environmental concern around the globe. The degradation of soil resources due to the presence of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has a substantial influence on agricultural production, food security, and human well-being, and as a result, urgent action is required. PTEs pollution is not a threat to the agroecosystems but also a serious concern to human health; thereby, it needs to be addressed timely and effectively. Hence, the development of improved and cost-effective procedures to remove PTEs from polluted soils is imperative. With this context in mind, current review is designed to distinctly envisage the PTEs removal potential by the single and binary applications of biochar (BC) and nanomaterials (NMs).2 Recently, BC, a product of high-temperature biomass pyrolysis with high specific surface area, porosity, and distinctive physical and chemical properties has become one of the most used and economic adsorbent materials. Also, biochar's application has generated interest in a variety of fields and environments as a modern approach against the era of urbanization, industrialization, and climate change. Likewise, several NMs including metals and their oxides, carbon materials, zeolites, and bimetallic-based NMs have been documented as having the potential to remediate PTEs-polluted environments. However, both techniques have their own set of advantages and disadvantages, therefore combining them can be a more effective strategy to address the growing concern over the rapid accumulation and release of PTEs into the environment.

Microbiological status of natural and anthropogenic soils of the Taganrog Bay coast at different levels of combined pollution with heavy metals and PAHs

The effect of heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution on the microbiological status of soils on the coast of the Taganrog Bay and adjacent areas was studied. The content of total and exchangeable forms of HMs, the content of 16 priority PAHs and the abundance of several groups of culturable microorganisms was determined, namely copiotrophic, prototrophic, aerobic spore-forming bacteria, actinomycetes, molds and yeasts. The content of total and exchangeable forms of HMs in urban coastal soils in industrial zone significantly exceeded that in non-urban soils. The maximum concentrations of total forms of Mn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd are 1821, 871, 143, 89, 1390, 317 and 10 mg/kg, respectively. The median value of the total content of 16 PAHs in urban soils is 3 times higher than in the soils of natural areas and reached 4309 ng/g. The lowest numbers of copiotrophic bacteria, prototrophic bacteria and aerobic spore-forming bacteria were found in the soils of industrial zone: 6.8, 13.8 and 0.63 million CFU g-1 dry soil, respectively. The largest numbers of copiotrophic bacteria, prototrophic bacteria and aerobic spore-forming bacteria were recorded in the soils of natural areas-72.5, 136 and 5.73 million CFU g-1 dry soil, respectively. It was found that the abundance of copiotrophs, prototrophs, and aerobic spore-forming bacteria is more affected by the urbanization of coastal soils including the pollution of HMs and PAHs. Other groups of microorganisms (actinomycetes, molds and yeasts) turned out to be more resistant to anthropogenic factors.

Microbial electrochemical system: an emerging technology for remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from soil and sediments

Worldwide industrialization and other human activities have led to a frightening stage of release of hazardous, highly persistent, toxic, insoluble, strongly adsorbed to the soil and high molecular weight ubiquitous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils and sediments. The various conventional remediation methods are being used to remediate PAHs with certain drawbacks. Time taking process, high expenditure, excessive quantities of sludge generation, and various chemical requirements do not only make these methods outdated but produce yet much resistant and toxic intermediate metabolites. These disadvantages may be overcome by using a microbial electrochemical system (MES), a booming technology in the field of bioremediation. MES is a green remediation approach that is regulated by electrochemically active microorganisms at the electrode in the system. The key advantage of the system over the conventional methods is it does not involve any additional chemicals, takes less time, and generates minimal sludge or waste during the remediation of PAHs in soils. However, a comprehensive review of the MES towards bioremediation of PAHs adsorbed in soil and sediment is still lacking. Therefore, the present review intended to summarize the recent information on PAHs bioremediation, application, risks, benefits, and challenges based on sediment microbial fuel cell and microbial fuel cell to remediate mount-up industrial sludge, soil, and sediment rich in PAHs. Additionally, bio-electrochemically active microbes, mechanisms, and future perspectives of MES have been discussed.

Effect of chicken manure on soil microbial community diversity in poultry keeping areas

The poultry industry is generating a significant amount of waste from chicken droppings that are abundant in microbes as well as macro- and micronutrients suitable for manure. It has the potential to improve the microbial activity and nutrient dynamics in the soil, ultimately improving soil fertility. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of chicken droppings manure (CDM) on the diversity of the soil microbiome in the free walking chicken's area located in Stefanidar, Rostov Region, Russia. The data obtained were compared with 16 s rRNA from control samples located not far from the chicken's free-walking area, but not in direct contact with the droppings. Effect of CDM on the physicochemical characteristics of the soil and changes in its microbial diversity were assessed by employing the metagenomic approaches and 16 s rRNA-based taxonomic assessment. The alpha and beta diversity indices revealed that the application of the CDM significantly improved the soil microbial diversity. The 16S taxonomical analysis confirmed Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Planctomycetes as abundant bacterial phylum. It also revealed the increase in the total number of the individual operational taxonomic unit (OTU) species, a qualitative indicator of the rich microbial community. The alpha diversity confirmed that the significant species richness of the soil is associated with the CDM treatment. The increased OTUs represent the qualitative indicator of a community that has been studied up to the depth of 5-20 cm of the CDM treatment range. These findings suggested that CDM-mediated microbial richness are believed to confer the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, along with key soil enzymes such as dehydrogenases and catalase carbohydrate-active enzymes. Hence, the application of CDM could improve soil fertility by nutrient cycling caused by changes in soil microbial dynamics, and it could also be a cost-effective sustainable means of improving soil health.

Hyperspectral imaging for small-scale analysis of Hordeum vulgare L. leaves under the benzo[a]pyrene effect

Hyperspectral imaging is a newly developed approach to estimate the current state of the plants and to develop the methods of soil and plant ecological state improvement under the effect of different sources. The study was devoted to the novel approach of hyperspectral imaging application in the case of persistent organic pollutants (POP) uptake by plants. Hordeum vulgare L. was used as a test plant and grown on the soil artificially contaminated by benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in the doses of 20, 100, 200, 400, and 800 ng g-1, which corresponds to 1, 5, 10, 20, and 40 maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) and correlates with the level of soil pollution near industrial facilities in the Rostov Region (Russian Federation). It was analyzed a group of indexes responsible for plants stress, consists of broadband greenness group, narrowband greenness group, light use efficiency group, and leaf pigments group. Benzo[a]pyrene had a stronger effect on the efficiency of the photosynthesis process than on the content of chlorophylls. In the phase of active adaptation to stress in H. vulgare, the content of photosynthetic pigments was increased. The proposed method for selecting spectral profiles by cutting off profiles that do not belong to a plant, based on the NDVI value can be effectively used for the estimation of the plants stress under the BaP contamination and for future perspectives in the most suitable way for the application of the plant's growth stimulants.

A Novel Study on Anionic Surfactant Degradation Potential of Psychrophillic and Psychrotolerant Pseudomonas spp. Identified from Surfactant-contaminated River Water

The Yamuna River, a tributary of the holy Ganga, is heavily polluted in the Delhi-NCR region, India and has been gaining attention due to the excessive foaming of the river over the past few years. This can be directly or indirectly related to the overuse of surfactants and the discharge of untreated domestic and textile wastewater into the river. To determine the surfactant load and investigate potential surfactant-degrading bacteria in the region, 96 water samples from four sites in the Okhla Barrage stretch of the river were collected and analysed. The results showed that the selected sites have surfactant concentrations more than the permissible limit (1.00 mgL^-1). Also, at most of the sites, the concentration crossed the desirable limit of BIS (0.2 mgL^-1) during the period of analysis. The concentration of anionic surfactant reported in the region was found in the range of 0.29 mgL^-1 and 2.83 mgL^-1. A total of 38 different bacteria were isolated using selective media from the same water samples, out of which 7 bacterial isolates were screened for sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) tolerance activity. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, 2 species, namely Pseudomonas koreensis YRW-02 and Pseudomonas songnenensis YRW-05 have been identified and their degradation potential was assessed at different SDS concentrations. The results showed that our strains YRW-02 and YRW-05 degraded 78.29 and 69.24% of SDS respectively. Growth optimization was also performed at different substrate concentrations, pH, and temperature to investigate optimum degradation conditions. This study plays a significant role in assessing the surfactant load and also gives a promising background for future use in in-situ bioremediation experiments.

Uptake, accumulation, toxicity, and interaction of metallic-based nanoparticles with plants: current challenges and future perspectives

The rapid development of industrialization is causing several fundamental problems in plants due to the interaction between plants and soil contaminated with metallic nanoparticles (NPs). Numerous investigations have been conducted to address the severe toxic effects caused by nanoparticles in the past few decades. Based on the composition, size, concentration, physical and chemical characteristics of metallic NPs, and plant types, it enhances or lessens the plant growth at various developmental stages. Metallic NPs are uptaken by plant roots and translocated toward shoots via vascular system based on composition, size, shape as well as plant anatomy and cause austere phytotoxicity. Herein, we tried to summarize the toxicity induced by the uptake and accumulation of NPs in plants and also we explored the detoxification mechanism of metallic NPs adopted by plants via using different phytohormones, signaling molecules, and phytochelatins. This study was intended to be an unambiguous assessment including current knowledge on NPs uptake, accumulation, and translocation in higher plants. Furthermore, it will also provide sufficient knowledge to the scientific community to understand the metallic NPs-induced inhibitory effects and mechanisms involved within plants.

Nanomaterials in biochar: Review of their effectiveness in remediating heavy metal-contaminated soils

Biochar can be used for soil remediation in environmentally beneficial manner, especially when combined with nanomaterials. After a decade of research, still, no comprehensive review was conducted on the effectiveness of biochar-based nanocomposites in controlling heavy metal immobilization at soil interfaces. In this paper, the recent progress in immobilizing heavy metals using biochar-based nanocomposite materials were reviewed and compared their efficacy against that of biochar alone. In details, an overview of results on the immobilization of Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Cr, and As was presented by different nanocomposites made by various biochars derived from kenaf bar, green tea, residual bark, cornstalk, wheat straw, sawdust, palm fiber, and bagasse. Biochar nanocomposite was found to be most effective when combined with metallic nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄ and FeS) and carbonaceous nanomaterials (graphene oxide and chitosan). This study also devoted special consideration to different remediation mechanisms by which the nanomaterials affect the effectiveness of the immobilization process. The effects of nanocomposites on soil characteristics related to pollution migration, phytotoxicity, and soil microbial composition were assessed. A future perspective on nanocomposites' use in contaminated soils was presented.

Decrypting the multi-functional biological activators and inducers of defense responses against biotic stresses in plants

Plant diseases are still the main problem for the reduction in crop yield and a threat to global food security. Additionally, excessive usage of chemical inputs such as pesticides and fungicides to control plant diseases have created another serious problem for human and environmental health. In view of this, the application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) for controlling plant disease incidences has been identified as an eco-friendly approach for coping with the food security issue. In this review, we have identified different ways by which PGPRs are capable of reducing phytopathogenic infestations and enhancing crop yield. PGPR suppresses plant diseases, both directly and indirectly, mediated by microbial metabolites and signaling components. Microbial synthesized anti-pathogenic metabolites such as siderophores, antibiotics, lytic enzymes, hydrogen cyanide, and several others act directly on phytopathogens. The indirect mechanisms of reducing plant disease infestation are caused by the stimulation of plant immune responses known as initiation of systemic resistance (ISR) which is mediated by triggering plant immune responses elicited through pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). The ISR triggered in the infected region of the plant leads to the development of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) throughout the plant making the plant resistant to a wide range of pathogens. A number of PGPRs including Pseudomonas and Bacillus genera have proven their ability to stimulate ISR. However, there are still some challenges in the large-scale application and acceptance of PGPR for pest and disease management. Further, we discuss the newly formulated PGPR inoculants possessing both plant growth-promoting activities and plant disease suppression ability for a holistic approach to sustaining plant health and enhancing crop productivity.

Physiological and Biochemical Responses of Solanum lycopersicum L. to Benzo[a]pyrene Contaminated Soils

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is noted as one of the main cancer-causing pollutants in human beings and may damage the development of crop plants. The present work was designed to explore more insights into the toxic effects of BaP on Solanum lycopersicum L. at various doses (20, 40, and 60 MPC) spiked in Haplic Chernozem. A dose-dependent response in phytotoxicity were noted, especially in the biomass of the roots and shoots, at doses of 40 and 60 MPC BaP and the accumulation of BaP in S. lycopersicum tissues. Physiological and biochemical response indices were severely damaged based on applied doses of BaP. During the histochemical analysis of the localization of superoxide in the leaves of S. lycopersicum, formazan spots were detected in the area near the leaf's veins. The results of a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) from 2.7 to 5.1 times, proline 1.12- to 2.62-folds, however, a decrease in catalase (CAT) activity was recorded by 1.8 to 1.1 times. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased from 1.4 to 2, peroxidase (PRX) from 2.3 to 5.25, ascorbate peroxidase (APOX) by 5.8 to 11.5, glutathione peroxidase (GP) from 3.8 to 7 times, respectively. The structure of the tissues of the roots and leaves of S. lycopersicum in the variants with BaP changed depending on the dose: it increased the intercellular space, cortical layer, and the epidermis, and the structure of the leaf tissues became looser.

Fabrication of biochar derived from different types of feedstocks as an efficient adsorbent for soil heavy metal removal

For effective soil remediation, it is vital to apply environmentally friendly and cost-effective technologies following the notion of green sustainable development. In the context of recycling waste and preserving nutrients in the soil, biochar production and utilization have become widespread. There is an urgent need to develop high-efficiency biochar-based sorbents for pollution removal from soil. This research examined the efficacy of soil remediation using biochar made from three distinct sources: wood, and agricultural residues (sunflower and rice husks). The generated biochars were characterized by SEM/SCEM, XRF, XRD, FTIR, BET Specific Surface Area, and elemental compositions. The presence of hydroxyl and phenolic functional groups and esters in wood, sunflower and rice husk biochar were noted. The total volume of pores was in the following descending order: rice husk > wood > sunflower husk. However, wood biochar had more thermally stable, heterogeneous, irregular-shaped pores than other samples. Adsorption of soil-heavy metals into biochars differed depending on the type of adsorbent, according to data derived from distribution coefficients, sorption degree, Freundlich, and Langmuir adsorption models. The input of biochars to Calcaric Fluvic Arenosol increased its adsorption ability under contamination by Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II) in the following order: wood > rice husk > sunflower husk. The addition of sunflower husk, wood, and rice husk biochar to the soil led to an increase in the removal efficiency of metals in all cases (more than 77%). The increase in the percentage adsorption of Cu and Pb was 9-19%, of Zn was 11-21%. The present results indicated that all biochars functioned well as an absorbent for removing heavy metals from soils. The tailor-made surface chemistry properties and the high sorption efficiency of the biochar from sunflower and rice husks could potentially be used for soil remediation.

Potentially toxic elements in surface soils of the Lower Don floodplain and the Taganrog Bay coast: sources, spatial distribution and pollution assessment

The pollution of floodplain, deltaic and adjacent coastal soils in large fluvial systems, considered an urgent environmental problem, as well as potentially toxic elements in such environments, can negatively affect aquatic ecosystems, as well as pose significant risks to human health. This paper is devoted to the geochemistry of potentially toxic elements in soils of the Lower Don basin, which is one of the largest and most anthropogenically transformed water bodies in Southern Russia, as well as the adjacent areas of the Taganrog Bay coast. The median element concentrations in the soils of the study area were consistent with the world soil average and the contents of elements in background soils. Comparative assessment of the spatial distributions as well as the results of Pearson's correlations, cluster analysis and principal component analysis showed that Cr, Ni, Cu and Zn are predominantly of natural origin; Mn and As are of mixed sources; and Cd and Pb are predominantly of anthropogenic origin. The geochemical anomalies of elements were associated with the impact of local anthropogenic sources. Geochemical background values for Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb in the soils of the Lower Don and the Taganrog Bay coast determined using the 'median + 2 median absolute deviations' approach are presented. The highest values of the integrated pollution indices were observed in floodplain soils of small rivers.

Bioaccessible PAH influence on distribution of antibiotic resistance genes and soil toxicity of different types of land use

For a better understanding of the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in natural microbial communities, it is necessary to study the factors influencing it. There are not enough studies showing the connection of some pollutants with the dissemination of ARGs and especially few works on the effect of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs) on the spread of resistance in microbiocenosis. In this respect, the aim of the study was to determine the effect of bioaccessible PAHs on soil resistome. The toxicity and the content of bioaccessible PAHs and ARGs were studied in 64 samples of soils of different types of land use in the Rostov Region of Russia. In most soils, a close positive correlation was demonstrated between different ARGs and bioaccessible PAHs with different content of rings in the structure. Six of the seven studied ARGs correlated with the content of 2-, 3-, 4-, 5- or 6-ring PAHs. The greatest number of close correlations was found between the content of PAHs and ARGs in the soils of protected areas, for agricultural purposes, and in soils of hospitals. The diverse composition of microbial communities in these soils might greatly facilitate this process. A close correlation between various toxic effects identified with a battery of whole-cell bacterial biosensors and bioaccessible PAHs of various compositions was established. This correlation showed possible mechanisms of PAHs' influence on microorganisms (DNA damage, oxidative stress, etc.), which led to a significant increase in horizontal gene transfer and spread of some ARGs in soil microbial communities. All this information, taken together, suggests that bioaccessible PAHs can enhance the spread of antibiotic resistance genes.

Use of natural sorbents for accelerated bioremediation of grey forest soil contaminated with crude oil

Due to the extensive oil extraction and transportation that occurs in oil-producing countries, many lands remain contaminated because of accidental leakages. Despite its low cost and environmentally safe nature, bioremediation technology is not always successful, mainly because of the soil toxicity to the degrading microbial populations and plants. Here we report a three-year microfield experiment on the influence of natural sorbents of mineral (zeolite, kaolinite, vermiculite, diatomite), organic (peat), carbonaceous (biochar) origin, and a mixed sorbent ACD (composed of granular activated carbon and diatomite) on the bioremediation of grey forest soil contaminated with weathered crude oil (40.1 g total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) kg^-1). Optimal doses of the sorbents significantly accelerated bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil through bioaugmentation followed by phytoremediation. The main reason for the influence of the sorbent amendments relied upon the creation of optimal conditions for the activation of hydrocarbon-utilizing bacteria and plant growth due to the reduction of soil toxicity, as well as maintaining an optimal pH and water-air regime in the soil. That happened because of reducing the soil hydrophobicity, increasing porosity and water holding capacity. The content of the TPH in the best samples (2% biochar or ACD) reduced to their local permissible concentration accepted for remediated soils in the Russian Federation (≤5 g kg^-1) after two warm seasons compared to that after three warm seasons in the other samples. Although some sorbents decelerated biodegradation of highly condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, including benzo(a)pyrene) in the soil, the overall risk from the residual contaminants present in the remediated soil and plants was minimized. The final total content of the main PAHs in the sorbent-amended soils did not exceed the maximal permissible levels that are accepted in most EU countries (1000-40,000 μg kg^-1), and they did not accumulate in the aboveground phytomass of grasses in dangerous concentrations.

Phragmites australis cav. As a bioindicator of hydromorphic soils pollution with heavy metals and polyaromatic hydrocarbons

The work is devoted to evaluation of the ability of Phragmites australis Сav. to indicate the soil pollution with heavy metals (HMs) and priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by studying changes in the plant's ultrastructure. The concentration of Mn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, Zn, Ni as well as 16 priority PAHs in hydromorphic soils and macrophyte plants (Phragmites australis Cav.) were increasing with distance decreasing to the power station and approaching to the direction of prevailing wind (northwest). The analyze of distribution of the studied pollutants in plants showed that the highest concentration have prevailed in the roots. A decrease in the diameter of the roots, and an increase in the thickness of the leaf blade was established. The transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that the ultrastructure of P. australis chloroplasts changed affected by accumulation of HMs and PAHs: a rise in the number of plastoglobules; a drop in the number of lamellae in granules, as well as changes in the shape, size, and electron density of mitochondria and peroxisomes. The most serious destructive violations of the main cellular organelles were noted for plants from the site within a 2.5 km from the emissions source and located on the predominant wind rose (north-west) direction. These macrophytes reflect spatial variations of pollutants metals in hydromorphic soils, therefore they are of potential use as bioindicators of environmental pollution.

Advances in characterization of probiotics and challenges in industrial application

An unbalanced diet and poor lifestyle are common reasons for numerous health complications in humans. Probiotics are known to provide substantial benefits to human health by producing several bioactive compounds, vitamins, short-chain fatty acids and short peptides. Diets that contain probiotics are limited to curd, yoghurt, kefir, kimchi, etc. However, exploring the identification of more potential probiotics and enhancing their commercial application to improve the nutritional quality would be a significant step to utilizing the maximum benefits. The complex evolution patterns among the probiotics are the hurdles in their characterization and adequate application in the industries and dairy products. This article has mainly discussed the molecular methods of characterization that are based on the analysis of ribosomal RNA, whole genome, and protein markers and profiles. It also has critically emphasized the emerging challenges in industrial applications of probiotics.

Uptake of potentially toxic elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the hydromorphic soil and their cellular effects on the Phragmites australis

The current study provides an information on the combined effect of pollution with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in hydromorphic soils on the accumulation, growth, functional and morphological-anatomical changes of macrophyte plant, i.e., Phragmites australis Cav., as well as information about their bioindication status on the example of small rivers of the Azov basin. The territory of the lower reaches of the Kagalnik River is one of the small rivers of the Eastern Azov region was examined with different levels of PTEs contamination in soils, where the excess of the lithosphere clarkes and maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) for Mn, Cr, Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd were found. The features of the 16 priority PAHs quantitative and qualitative composition in hydromorphic soils and P. australis were revealed. The influence of soil pollution on accumulation in P. australis, as well as changes in the morphological parameters were shown. It has been observed that morphometric changes in P. australis at sites experiencing the сontamination and salinity are reflected with the changes in the ultrastructure of plastids, mitochondria, and EPR elements of plant cells. PTEs accumulated in inactive organs and damaged cell structures. At the same time, PAHs penetrated through the biomembranes and violated their integrity, increased permeability, resulted cell disorganization, meristem, and conductive tissues of roots. The nature and extent of the structural alterations found are dependent on the type and extent of pollution in the examined regions and can be utilized as bioindicators for evaluating the degree of soil phytotoxicity characterized by the accumulation of PTE and PAHs.

Nano-biochar: A novel solution for sustainable agriculture and environmental remediation

Currently, the applications of biochar (BC) in agricultural practices and for environmental remediation purposes have demonstrated multifaceted advantages despite a few limitations. Nano-BC offers considerable opportunities especially for the remediation of hazardous contaminants as well as the improvement of crop productivity. Positive outcomes of nano-BC on soil physico-chemical and biological characteristics have indicated its suitability for agricultural applications. Nano-BC may effectively regulate the mobilization and sorption of important micro- and macro-nutrients, along with the hazardous contaminants including potentially toxic metals, pesticides, etc. Additionally, the sorption characteristics of nano-BC depends substantially on feedstock materials and pyrolysis temperatures. Nevertheless, the conducted investigations regarding nano-BC are in infant stages, requiring extensive field investigations. The nano-enhanced properties of BC on one hand dramatically improve its effectiveness and sustainability, on the other hand, there may be associated with toxicity development in diverse aquatic and/or terrestrial environments. Therefore, risk assessment on soil organisms and its indirect impact on human health is another area of concern linked with the field application of nano-BC. The present review delineates the potentiality of nano-BC as an emerging sorbent for sustainable agriculture and environmental applications.

Decrypting the synergistic action of the Fenton process and biochar addition for sustainable remediation of real technogenic soil from PAHs and heavy metals

The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility and the relevance of combining biochar with the Fenton process for the simultaneous improvement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) degradation and immobilization of heavy metals (HMs) in real soil remediation processes at circumneutral pH. The evaluation of PAHs degradation results was performed through multivariate statistical tools, including principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS). PCA showed that the level of biochar amendment decisively affected the degree of degradation of total PAHs, highlighting the role of biochar in catalyzing the Fenton reaction. Moreover, the PLS model was used to interpret the important features of each PAH's physico-chemical properties and its correlation to degradation efficiency. The electron affinity of PAHs correlated positively with the degradation efficiency only if the level of biochar amendment sat at 5%, explained by the ability of biochar to transfer the electrons to PAHs, improving the Fenton-like degradation. Moreover, the addition of biochar reduced the mobilization of HMs by their fixation on their surface, reducing the Fenton-induced metal leaching from the destruction of metal-organic complexes. In overall, these results on the high immobilization rate of HMs accompanied with additional moderate PAHs degradation highlighted the advantages of using a biochar-assisted Fenton-like reaction for sustainable remediation of technogenic soil.

Surfactant Pollution, an Emerging Threat to Ecosystem: Approaches for Effective Bacterial Degradation

The use of surfactants in households and industries is inevitable and so is their discharge into the environment, especially into the water bodies as effluents. Being surface-active agents, their utilization is mostly seen in soaps, detergents, personal care products, emulsifiers, wetting agents, etc. Anionic surfactants are the most used class. These surfactants are responsible for the foam and froth in the water bodies and cause potential adverse effects to both biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. Surfactants are capable of penetrating the cell membrane and thus cause toxicity to living organisms. Accumulation of these compounds has been known to cause significant gill damage and loss of sight in fish. Alteration of physiological and biochemical parameters of water decreases the amount of dissolved oxygen and thus affecting the entire ecosystem. Microbes utilizing surfactants as substrates for energy form the basis of the biodegradation of these compounds. The main organisms for surfactant biodegradation, both in sewage and natural waters, are bacteria. Several Pseudomonas and Bacillus spp. have shown efficient degradation of anionic surfactants namely: sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS), sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate (SDBS). Also, several microbial consortia constituting Alcaligenes spp., Citrobacter spp., etc. have shown efficacy in the degradation of surfactants. The biodegradation efficiency studies of these microbes/microbial consortia would be of immense help in formulating better solutions for the bioremediation of surfactants and help to reduce their potential environmental hazards.

The effect of combined pollution by PAHs and heavy metals on the topsoil microbial communities of Spolic Technosols of the lake Atamanskoe, Southern Russia

The contamination with organic and inorganic pollutants changes significantly soil microbial community structure. These shifts indicate anthropogenic pressure and help to discover new possibilities for soil remediation. In this study, the microbial community structure of Spolic Technosols formed at the territory of a former industrial sludge reservoir near the Kamensk-Shakhtinsky (Southern Russia) was studied using a metagenomics approach. The studied soils contain high concentrations of heavy metals (HM) (up to 72,900 mg kg^-1) and 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (up to 6670 mg kg^-1). Its microbial communities demonstrate an excellent adaptability level reflected in their complexity and diversity. As shown by the high values of alpha diversity indices (Shannon values up to 10.1, Chao1 values from 1430 to 4273), instead of decreasing quantitatively and qualitatively on the systemic level, microbial communities tend to undergo complex redistribution. Regardless of contamination level, the share of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria was consistently high and varied from 20 to 50%. Following the results of the Mann-Whitney U test, there were significant changes of less abundant phyla. The abundance of oligotrophic bacteria from Gemmatimonadetes and Verrucomicrobia phyla and autotrophic bacteria (e.g., Nitrospira) decreased due to the high PAH's level. And abundance of Firmicutes and amoebae-associated bacteria such as TM6 and soil Chlamydia increased in highly contaminated plots. In the Spolic Technosols studied, the influence of factors on the microbial community composition decreased from PAHs concentration to soil characteristics (organic carbon content) and phylum-phylum interactions. The high concentrations of HMs influenced weakly on the microbial community composition.

Nanobionics in Crop Production: An Emerging Approach to Modulate Plant Functionalities

The "Zero Hunger" goal is one of the key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Therefore, improvements in crop production have always been a prime objective to meet the demands of an ever-growing population. In the last decade, studies have acknowledged the role of photosynthesis augmentation and enhancing nutrient use efficiency (NUE) in improving crop production. Recently, the applications of nanobionics in crop production have given hope with their lucrative properties to interact with the biological system. Nanobionics have significantly been effective in modulating the photosynthesis capacity of plants. It is documented that nanobionics could assist plants by acting as an artificial photosynthetic system to improve photosynthetic capacity, electron transfer in the photosystems, and pigment content, and enhance the absorption of light across the UV-visible spectrum. Smart nanocarriers, such as nanobionics, are capable of delivering the active ingredient nanocarrier upon receiving external stimuli. This can markedly improve NUE, reduce wastage, and improve cost effectiveness. Thus, this review emphasizes the application of nanobionics for improving crop yield by the two above-mentioned approaches. Major concerns and future prospects associated with the use of nanobionics are also deliberated concisely.

Geochemical transformation of soil cover and vegetation in a drained floodplain lake affected by long-term discharge of effluents from rayon industry plants, lower Don River Basin, Southern Russia

Lake Atamanskoye is one of the most polluted aquatic environments in the South of Russia. This water body was affected by long-term pollution by effluent from industrial rayon plants located in the city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky. Accumulation of pollutants resulted in the degradation of Lake Atamanskoye, which is currently drained. This research focused on the geochemical transformation of soils and vegetation within the territory of the former water body and its surroundings. Methods of study included the evaluation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soils and plants by X-ray fluorescence, as well as the contents of their forms by sequential extraction and statistical processing of the data. The results revealed that Spolic Technosols and Fluvisols represent the most widespread soils within Lake Atamanskoye. The concentration of metals found in the soils of the lakebed is several orders of magnitude higher than the regional geochemical background and world soil baseline values due to long-term industrial pollution. The natural and technogenic soils were subdivided into two groups according to pH. Alkaline soils in the presence of carbonates were characterised by high levels of PTEs, while acidic soils with higher proportions of exchangeable fractions and higher potential for metal accumulation in adjacent plants had lower levels of PTEs.

Pollution status and human health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban street dust of Tyumen city, Russia

This study investigated levels and sources of pollution and potential health risks associated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban street dust collected from Tyumen city, a large transport centre with one of the highest motorization rates in Russia. Twenty street dust samples were collected from four grades of roads in five different land use areas. Research methods included measurements of physical and chemical properties of street dust, concentrations of 18 PTEs using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, 12 PAHs using high-performance liquid chromatography, and statistical analysis of the data. Concentrations of Ni, Cr, Sb, and Mo, as well as medium and high molecular weight PAHs in urban street dust, were notably higher than in soils within the city, which indicates that transport is the main source of these elements. Concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Mn, and As in street dust of Tyumen were lower compared to many large cities, while Cr, Ni, and Co were higher. Concentrations of PAH were comparable to other large nonindustrial cities. Total contamination of street dust by both PTEs and PAHs showed more robust relationships with the number of roadway lanes rather than land use. The estimated carcinogenic risks were low in 70% of samples and medium in 30% of samples. Noncarcinogenic risks were attributed to exposure to Co, Ni, V, and As. The total noncarcinogenic risk for adults was found to be negligible, while the risk was found to be moderate for children.

Microplastic Pollution: An Emerging Threat to Terrestrial Plants and Insights into Its Remediation Strategies

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous and constitute a global hazard to the environment because of their robustness, resilience, and long-term presence in the ecosystem. For now, the majority of research has primarily focused on marine and freshwater ecosystems, with just a small amount of attention towards the terrestrial ecosystems. Although terrestrial ecosystems are recognized as the origins and routes for MPs to reach the sea, there is a paucity of knowledge about these ecological compartments, which is necessary for conducting effective ecological risk assessments. Moreover, because of their high persistence and widespread usage in agriculture, agribusiness, and allied sectors, the presence of MPs in arable soils is undoubtedly an undeniable and severe concern. Consequently, in the recent decade, the potential risk of MPs in food production, as well as their impact on plant growth and development, has received a great deal of interest. Thus, a thorough understanding of the fate and risks MPs, as well as prospective removal procedures for safe and viable agricultural operations in real-world circumstances, are urgently needed. Therefore, the current review is proposed to highlight the potential sources and interactions of MPs with agroecosystems and plants, along with their remediation strategies.

Visible-Light-Driven Reduced Graphite Oxide as a Metal-Free Catalyst for Degradation of Colored Wastewater

Reduced graphite oxide (rGO)-based materials have demonstrated promising potential for advanced oxidation processes. Along with its distinctive 2D characteristics, rGO offers the prospect of catalytic degradation of various kinds of organic pollutants from aqueous environments. The practical application of rGO as a metal-free catalyst material to promote the Fenton reaction depends on the degree of rGO reduction. In this regard, the rGO was prepared according to oxidation by modified Hummers' method and two-step reduction via hydrothermal and calcination in the N2 atmosphere. The as-prepared rGO was characterized in terms of X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The effectiveness of as-prepared rGO as a photocatalyst and the metal-free catalyst to decolorize different textile dyes, including basic red 46, basic red 18, and methylene blue, was investigated in visible/rGO and visible/rGO/H2O2 systems. The impact of operational factors such as catalyst dose, pH, and initial dye concentration was examined. The dye degradation process was investigated by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. In addition, the recyclability of rGO in the visible/rGO/H2O2 system was examined.

Association of jasmonic acid priming with multiple defense mechanisms in wheat plants under high salt stress

Salinity is a global conundrum that negatively affects various biometrics of agricultural crops. Jasmonic acid (JA) is a phytohormone that reinforces multilayered defense strategies against abiotic stress, including salinity. This study investigated the effect of JA (60 μM) on two wheat cultivars, namely ZM9 and YM25, exposed to NaCl (14.50 dSm^-1) during two consecutive growing seasons. Morphologically, plants primed with JA enhanced the vegetative growth and yield components. The improvement of growth by JA priming is associated with increased photosynthetic pigments, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO₂, maximal photosystem II efficiency, and transpiration rate of the stressed plants. Furthermore, wheat cultivars primed with JA showed a reduction in the swelling of the chloroplast, recovery of the disintegrated thylakoids grana, and increased plastoglobuli numbers compared to saline-treated plants. JA prevented dehydration of leaves by increasing relative water content and water use efficiency via reducing water and osmotic potential using proline as an osmoticum. There was a reduction in sodium (Na⁺) and increased potassium (K⁺) contents, indicating a significant role of JA priming in ionic homeostasis, which was associated with induction of the transporters, viz., SOS1, NHX2, and HVP1. Exogenously applied JA mitigated the inhibitory effect of salt stress in plants by increasing the endogenous levels of cytokinins and indole acetic acid, and reducing the abscisic acid (ABA) contents. In addition, the oxidative stress caused by increasing hydrogen peroxide in salt-stressed plants was restrained by JA, which was associated with increased α-tocopherol, phenolics, and flavonoids levels and triggered the activities of superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase activity. This increase in phenolics and flavonoids could be explained by the induction of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity. The results suggest that JA plays a key role at the morphological, biochemical, and genetic levels of stressed and non-stressed wheat plants which is reflected in yield attributes. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analyses showed that salt sensitivity was associated with the increments of Na⁺, hydrogen peroxide, and ABA contents. The regulatory role of JA under salinity stress was interlinked with increased JA level which consequentially improved ion transporting, osmoregulation, and antioxidant defense.

Sorption of benzo[a]pyrene by Chernozem and carbonaceous sorbents: comparison of kinetics and interaction mechanisms

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, highly persistent and toxic and a widespread environmental pollutant. Although various technologies have been developed to remove BaP from the environment, its sorption through solid matrixes has received increasing attention due to cost-effectiveness. The present research compares the adsorption capacity of Haplic Chernozem, granular activated carbon and biochar in relation to BaP from water solution. Laboratory experiments with different initial BaP concentrations in the liquid phase and different ratios of the solid and liquid phases show that Freundlich model describes well the adsorption isotherms of BaP by the soil and both sorbents. Moreover, the BaP isotherm sorption by the Haplic Chernozem is better illustrated by the Freundlich model than the Langmuir equation. The results reveal that the sorption capacity of the carbonaceous adsorbents at a ratio 1:20 (solid to liquid phases) is orders of magnitude higher (13 368 ng mL^-1 of activated carbon and 3 578 ng mL^-1 of biochar) compared to the soil (57.8 ng mL^-1). At the ratio of 0.5:20, the adsorption capacity of the carbonaceous sorbents was 17-45 times higher than that of the soil. This is due to the higher pore volume and specific surface area of the carbonaceous sorbents than soil particles, assessed through scanning electron microscopy. The sorption kinetic of BaP by Chernozem was compared with the adsorption kinetics by the carbonaceous sorbents. Results indicate that the adsorption dynamic involves two steps. The first one is associated with a fast BaP adsorption on the large available surface and inside macro- and meso-pores of the sorbent particles of the granular activated carbon and biochar. Then, the adsorption is followed by a slower process of BaP penetration into the microporous space and/or redistribution into a hydrophobic fraction. The effectiveness of the sorption process depends on both the sorbent properties and the solvent competition. Overall, the granular activated carbon and biochar are highly effective adsorbents for BaP, whereas the Haplic Chernozem has a rather limited capacity to remove BaP from contaminated solutions.

Biochar-assisted Fenton-like oxidation of benzo[a]pyrene-contaminated soil

In the present study, the biochar derived from sunflower husks was used as a mediator in the heterogeneous Fenton process. The physical and chemical characteristics were studied in terms of specific surface area, elemental contents, surface morphology, surface functional groups, thermal stability, and X-ray crystallography. The main aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of biochar in a heterogeneous Fenton process catalyzed by hematite toward the degradation of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in Haplic Chernozem. The Fenton-like reaction was performed at a pH of 7.8 without pH adjustment in chernozem soil. The effects of operating parameters, such as hematite dosage and H₂O₂ concentrations, were investigated with respect to the removal efficiency of BaP. The overall degradation of 65% was observed at the optimized conditions where 2 mg g^-1 hematite and 1.25 M H₂O₂ corresponded to the H₂O₂ to Fe ratio of 22:1. Moreover, the biochar amendment showed an increment in the removal efficiency and promotion in the growth of spring barley (Hordeum sativum distichum). The BaP removal was reached 75 and 95% after 2.5 and 5% w/w addition of biochar, respectively. The results suggested that the Fenton-like reaction's effectiveness would be greatly enhanced by the ability of biochar for activation of H₂O₂ and ejection of the electron to reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II). Finally, the presence of biochar could enhance the soil physicochemical properties, as evidenced by the better growth of Hordeum sativum distichum compared to the soil without biochar. These promising results open up new opportunities toward the application of a modified Fenton reaction with biochar for remediating BaP-polluted soils.

Influence of carbon-containing and mineral sorbents on the toxicity of soil contaminated with benzo[a]pyrene during phytotesting

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a member of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons known for high persistency and toxicity. Technologies of BaP sorption through solid matrixes have received relatively more attention. The present study was devoted to the phytotesting investigations of two different groups of sorbents, such as carbonaceous, including biochar and granulated activated carbon (GAC), and mineral, including tripoli and diatomite. Evaluation of the BaP removing efficiency was carried out using the phytotesting method with spring barley in Haplic Chernozem contaminated with different levels of contamination (200 and 400 μg kg^-1 BaP). The sorbents' efficiency for BaP remediation was estimated in the sorbents doses from 0.5 to 2.5% per kg of soil. It was shown that biochar and GAC decreased the soil toxicity class to a greater extent than mineral sorbents ones. The effect intensified with an increase in applying sorbents doses. The optimal dose of carbonaceous sorbents into the soil contaminated with 200 µg kg^-1 was 1%, decreasing the BaP content up 57-59% in the soil. Simultaneously, the optimal dose of the mineral sorbents was found to be 1.5%, which decreased the BaP content in the soil up 41-48%. Increasing the BaP contamination level up to 400 µg kg^-1 showed the necessity of a sorbent dose increasing. In these conditions, among all applied sorbents, only 2% GAC could reduce the soil toxicity class to the normal level up to 0.91-1.10. It was shown that BaP tended to migrate from the soil to the roots and further into the vegetative part of barley.

Nano-Enabled Products: Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Agriculture

Nanotechnology has gained popularity in recent years owing to its established potential for application and implementation in various sectors such as medical drugs, medicine, catalysis, energy, material, and plant science. Nanoparticles (NPs) are smaller in size (1-100 nm) with a larger surface area and have many fruitful applications. The extraordinary functions of NPs are utilized in sustainable agriculture due to nano-enabled products, e.g., nano-insecticides, nano-pesticides, and nano-fertilizers. Nanoparticles have lately been suggested as an alternate method for controlling plant pests such as insects, fungi, and weeds. Several NPs exhibit antimicrobial properties considered in food packaging processes; for example, Ag-NPs are commonly used for such purposes. Apart from their antimicrobial properties, NPs such as Si, Ag, Fe, Cu, Al, Zn, ZnO, TiO2, CeO2, Al2O3, and carbon nanotubes have also been demonstrated to have negative impacts on plant growth and development. This review examines the field-use of nano-enabled products in sustainable agriculture, future perspectives, and growing environmental concerns. The remarkable information on commercialized nano-enabled products used in the agriculture and allied sectors are also provided.

Modulation of Cellular Redox Status and Antioxidant Defense System after Synergistic Application of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles and Salicylic Acid in Rice (Oryza sativa) Plant under Arsenic Stress

The objective of this research was to determine the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) and/or salicylic acid (SA) under arsenic (As) stress on rice (Oryza sativa). ZnONPs are analyzed for various techniques viz., X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All of these tests established that ZnONPs are pure with no internal defects, and can be potentially used in plant applications. Hence, we further investigated for better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and the extent of ZnONPs and SA induced oxidative stress damages. More restricted plant growth, gas exchange indices, significant reduction in the SPAD index and maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and brutal decline in protein content were noticed in As-applied plants. In contrast, foliar fertigation of ZnONPs and/or SA to As-stressed rice plants lessens the oxidative stress, as exposed by subordinate levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) synthesis. Improved enzymatic activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), proline and total soluble protein contents under ZnONPs and SA treatment plays an excellent role in the regulation of various transcriptional pathways participated in oxidative stress tolerance. Higher content of nitrogen (N; 13%), phosphorus (P; 10%), potassium (K; 13%), zinc (Zn; 68%), manganese (Mn; 14%), and iron (Fe; 19) in ZnONPs and SA treated plants under As-stress, thus hampered growth and photosynthetic efficiency of rice plants. Our findings suggest that toxicity of As was conquering by the application of ZnONPs and SA in rice plants.

Impact of Metal-Based Nanoparticles on Cambisol Microbial Functionality, Enzyme Activity, and Plant Growth

An increase in the penetration of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) into the environment requires an assessment of their ecotoxicity as they impair the critical activity of plants, animals, bacteria, and enzymes. Therefore, the study aimed to observe the effects of metal-based NPs, including copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn), on the Cambisols, which cover a significant part of the earth's soil and play an important role in the biosphere. Metal-based NPs were introduced into the soil at concentrations of 100, 1000, and 10,000 mg/kg. The biological properties of the soil are being investigated as the most sensitive to external contamination. The highest ecotoxicity of the studied pollutants introduced into the soil at the same concentrations was shown by Cu (up to 34%) and Zn (up to 30%) NPs, while Ni NPs showed less (up to 22%). Microbiological (total number of bacteria, Azotobacter sp. abundance) and phytotoxic properties (radish seed germination and length of roots) of Cambisols were more sensitive (22-53%) to pollution by NPs of Cu, Zn, and Ni, while enzymatic activity (catalase and dehydrogenases) showed less sensitivity (14-32%). The present results could be useful for biomonitoring the state of contaminated soils, especially by NPs.

Effects of Silicon and Silicon-Based Nanoparticles on Rhizosphere Microbiome, Plant Stress and Growth

Silicon (Si) is considered a non-essential element similar to cadmium, arsenic, lead, etc., for plants, yet Si is beneficial to plant growth, so it is also referred to as a quasi-essential element (similar to aluminum, cobalt, sodium and selenium). An element is considered quasi-essential if it is not required by plants but its absence results in significant negative consequences or anomalies in plant growth, reproduction and development. Si is reported to reduce the negative impacts of different stresses in plants. The significant accumulation of Si on the plant tissue surface is primarily responsible for these positive influences in plants, such as increasing antioxidant activity while reducing soil pollutant absorption. Because of these advantageous properties, the application of Si-based nanoparticles (Si-NPs) in agricultural and food production has received a great deal of interest. Furthermore, conventional Si fertilizers are reported to have low bioavailability; therefore, the development and implementation of nano-Si fertilizers with high bioavailability could be crucial for viable agricultural production. Thus, in this context, the objectives of this review are to summarize the effects of both Si and Si-NPs on soil microbes, soil properties, plant growth and various plant pathogens and diseases. Si-NPs and Si are reported to change the microbial colonies and biomass, could influence rhizospheric microbes and biomass content and are able to improve soil fertility.

Evaluating the effect of historical development on urban soils using microartifacts and geochemical indices

The proposed research is devoted to the effects of the urbanization on the soil cover through the assessment of common organic and inorganic pollutants as well as anthropogenic microartifacts (MAs) over 20 sites characterizing different land use areas within the city of Tyumen, Russia. The analytical methods included measurements of physical-chemical properties of soils (total organic carbon content, pH, and texture), the total concentrations of potentially toxic elements (V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sr, and Pb) using X-ray fluorescence analysis, and the concentrations of 12 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using high-performance liquid chromatography, and the evaluation of the composition of anthropogenic MAs assemblies by optical microscopy. The results of the study showed that the soils of all studied sites within the industrial areas were characterized by a high level of combined pollution with elements and compounds. For other sites, the duration of urbanization was the strongest factor that influenced the levels of pollution. The sites with the highest pollution levels were also characterized by the highest proportion and diversity of MAs. In contrast to the urban soils of the cities in North America and Western Europe, anthropogenic MAs associated with the use of coal (ash, slag, and silicon spheres) were present, but to a far lesser extent. Apparently, this is due to the fairly late development and intensive growth of Tyumen in the second half of the twentieth century, as well as the use of natural gas and fuel oil. At the same time, MAs associated with construction and domestic debris prevailed both in the soils of demolition sites and residential areas, which indirectly indicates the rapid and chaotic nature of urbanization, characteristic of Tyumen.

Effect of Foliar Fertigation of Chitosan Nanoparticles on Cadmium Accumulation and Toxicity in Solanum lycopersicum

The experiment conducted on Solanum lycopersicum provided an insight about Cd uptake, and the way a Solanum lycopersicum changes its physiological, biochemical and morphological responses when CTS-NPs are administered against Cd. As an effective important polymer, CTS-NPs enhanced the plant biomass, SPAD index, photosynthetic rate, and protein content in the Solanum lycopersicum plants grown in Cd stress, as a study herein. Addition of CTS-NPs reduced Cd accumulation by increasing the nutrient uptake. Furthermore, CTS-NPs treatment enhances tolerance to Cd stress through hampering ROS production accompanied by H₂O₂ activity, through reducing the peroxidation of lipids by minimizing MDA content, and through improving enzymatic (CAT, POX, SOD), non-enzymatic (GSH and AsA), and osmoprotectants (proline) antioxidant contents that are considered as a first line of defense to protect plants from stress.

Abstract

Cadmium (Cd) stress is increasing at a high pace and is polluting the agricultural land. As a result, it affects animals and the human population via entering into the food chain. The aim of this work is to evaluate the possibility of amelioration of Cd stress through chitosan nanoparticles (CTS-NPs). After 15 days of sowing (DAS), Solanum lycopersicum seedlings were transplanted into maintained pots (20 in number). Cadmium (0.8 mM) was providing in the soil as CdCl₂·2.5H₂O at the time of transplanting; however, CTS-NPs (100 µg/mL) were given through foliar spray at 25 DAS. Data procured from the present experiment suggests that Cd toxicity considerably reduces the plant morphology, chlorophyll fluorescence, in addition to photosynthetic efficiency, antioxidant enzyme activity and protein content. However, foliar application of CTS-NPs was effective in increasing the shoot dry weight (38%), net photosynthetic rate (45%) and SPAD index (40%), while a decrease in malondialdehyde (24%) and hydrogen peroxide (20%) was observed at the 30 DAS stage as compared to control plants. On behalf of the current results, it is demonstrated that foliar treatment of CTS-NPs might be an efficient approach to ameliorate the toxic effects of Cd.

Effects of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles on Physiological and Anatomical Indices in Spring Barley Tissues

The aim of the present work was to investigate the toxic effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs, particle size < 50 nm) on the physiological and anatomical indices of spring barley (Hordeum sativum L.). The results show that ZnO NPs inhibited H. sativum growth by affecting the chlorophyll fluorescence emissions and causing deformations of the stomatal and trichome morphology, alterations to the cellular organizations, including irregularities of the chloroplasts, and disruptions to the grana and thylakoid organizations. There was a lower number of chloroplasts per cell observed in the H. sativum leaf cells treated with ZnO NPs as compared to the non-treated plants. Cytomorphometric quantification revealed that ZnO NPs decreased the size of the chloroplast by 1.5 and 4 times in 300 and 2000 mg/L ZnO NP-treated plants, respectively. The elemental analysis showed higher Zn accumulation in the treated leaf tissues (3.8 and 10.18-fold with 300 and 2000 mg/L ZnO NPs, respectively) than the untreated. High contents of Zn were observed in several spots in ZnO NP-treated leaf tissues using X-ray fluorescence. Deviations in the anatomical indices were significantly correlated with physiological observations. The accumulation of Zn content in plant tissues that originated from ZnO NPs was shown to cause damage to the structural organization of the photosynthetic apparatus and reduced the photosynthetic activities.

Metal-based Green Synthesized Nanoparticles: Boon for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security

The applications of metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) in the sustainable development of agriculture and food security have received greater attention in recent years in the science community. Different biological resources have been employed to replace harmful chemicals to reduce metal salts and stabilize MNPs, i.e., green methods for the synthesis have paid attention to the nanobiotechnological advances. This review mainly focused on the applications of green synthesized MNPs for the agriculture sector and food security. Because of the novel domains, the green synthesized MNPs could be helpful in the different areas of agriculture like plant growth promotion, plant disease, and insect/pest management, fungicidal agent, in food security for food packaging, for increasing the shelf life and protection from spoilage, and other purposes. In the present review, the global scenario of the recent studies on the applications of green synthesized MNPs, particularly in sustainable agriculture and food security, is comprehensively discussed.

Assessing the toxicity and accumulation of bulk- and nano-CuO in Hordeum sativum L

The effects of bulk- and nano-CuO were monitored on barley (Hordeum sativum L.) in hydroponic conditions. The anatomical and cyto-/morphometric parameters of plants, exposed to both types of CuO in different doses (300 and 2000 mg/L) were recorded. The germination rate, root and shoot lengths decreased in a dose-dependent manner. Exposure to nano-CuO significantly increased Cu content in the H. sativum roots; however, the translocation rates of dissolved Cu were low and showed less accumulation in above-ground tissues. The differences between nano- and bulk-CuO treated plants were sufficiently evident, but at lower concentrations, these differences were non-significant. The relative seed germination inhibition was noted up to 11% and 22% under the high dose of bulk- and nano-CuO, respectively; however, at low dose, it was non-significant. The relative root length was reduced 3.6 fold by bulk- and 1.5 fold by nano-CuO, and shoot lengths decreased 1.6 fold by bulk- and 1.4 fold by nano-CuO under the high dose after growth of 30 days. It indicated more morphological effects on H. sativum caused by bulk- than the nano-CuO. The cytomorphometric analysis indicated the average cortex cell, total cortex, and total central cylinder areas of root cells and the average areas of chlorenchyma leaf cells were increased as compared to control in both bulk- and nano-CuO treated plants. It showed destructive effects of nano- and bulk-CuO on cellular organizations of H. sativum anatomy. Thus, at the low dose, the minimal effects of nano-CuO were observed than the bulk. Therefore, the finding could be interest for the safe application of nano-CuO.

Soil PAHs contamination effect on the cellular and subcellular organelle changes of Phragmites australis Cav

The concentrations of ∑₁₆ priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for soils, roots, and above-ground parts of reed (Phragmites australis Cav.) were determined on different monitoring plots located near the city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, southern Russia, where historically received industrial sewage and sludge. The total PAHs concentration in monitoring soil plots was significantly higher than those in the background site which situated at the distance of 2 km from the contamination source. Accordingly, the maximum accumulation was found for phenanthrene and chrysene among the 16 priority PAHs in most of the plant samples collected in the impact zone. The effects of PAHs' pollution on changes of Phragmites australis Cav. cellular and subcellular organelles in the studied monitoring sites were also determined using optical and electron microscopy, respectively. The obtained data showed that increasing of PAHs contamination negatively affected the ultrastructural changes of the studied plants. Phragmites australis Cav. showed a high level of adaptation to the effect of stressors by using tissue and cell levels. In general, the detected alterations under the PAHs effect were possibly connected to changes in biochemical and histochemical parameters as a response for reactive oxygen species and as a protective response against oxidative stress. The obtained results introduce innovative findings of cellular and subcellular changes in plants exposed to ∑₁₆ priority PAHs as very persistent and toxic contaminants.
