NRT1.1B mediates rice plant growth and soil microbial diversity under different nitrogen conditions

Interactions between microorganisms and plants can stimulate plant growth and promote nitrogen cycling. Nitrogen fertilizers are routinely used in agriculture to improve crop growth and yield; however, poor use efficiency impairs the optimal utilization of such fertilizers. Differences in the microbial diversity and plant growth of rice soil under different nitrogen application conditions and the expression of nitrogen-use efficiency-related genes have not been previously investigated. Therefore, this study investigates how nitrogen application and nitrogen-use efficiency-related gene NRT1.1B expression affect the soil microbial diversity and growth indices of two rice varieties, Huaidao 5 and Xinhuai 5. In total, 103,463 and 98,427 operational taxonomic units were detected in the soils of the Huaidao 5 and Xinhuai 5 rice varieties, respectively. The Shannon and Simpson indices initially increased and then decreased, whereas the Chao and abundance-based coverage estimator indices decreased after the application of nitrogen fertilizer. Nitrogen fertilization also reduced soil bacterial diversity and richness, as indicated by the reduced abundances of Azotobacter recorded in the soils of both rice varieties. Nitrogen application initially increased and then decreased the grain number per panicle, yield per plant, root, stem, and leaf nitrogen, total nitrogen content, glutamine synthetase, nitrate reductase, urease, and root activities of both varieties. Plant height showed positive linear trends in response to nitrogen application, whereas thousand-grain weights showed a negative trend. Our findings may be used to optimize nitrogen fertilizer use for rice cultivation and develop crop-variety-specific strategies for nitrogen fertilizer application.

Mechanistic study of the Ni-catalyzed hydroalkylation of 1,3-dienes: The origins of regio- and enantioselectivities and a further rational design

The development of the catalytic regio- and enantioselective hydrofunctionalization of 1,3-dienes remains a challenge and requires deep insight into the reaction mechanisms. We herein thoroughly studied the reaction mechanism of the Ni-catalyzed hydroalkylation of 1,3-dienes with ketones by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It reveals that the reaction is initiated by stepwise oxidative addition of EtO-H followed by 1,3-diene migratory insertion to generate the alkylnickel(II) intermediate, rather than the experimentally proposed ligand-to-ligand hydrogen transfer (LLHT) mechanism. In addition, we rationalized the role of t BuOK in the subsequent addition of enolate of ketone and transmetalation process. Based on the whole catalysis, the CC reductive elimination step, turns out to be the rate- and enantioselectivity-determining step. Furthermore, we disclosed the origins of the regio- and enantioselectivity of the product, and found that the 1,2-selectivity lies in the combination effects of the ligand-substrate electrostatic interactions, orbital interactions and Pauli repulsions, while the enantioselectivity mainly arises from substrate-ligand steric repulsions. Based on mechanistic study, new biaryl bisphosphine ligands affording higher enantioselectivity were designed, which will help to improve current catalytic systems and develop new transition-metal-catalyzed hydroalkylations.

Ni, Co-Embedded MOF-Derived N-Doped Bimetallic Porous Carbon for Adsorption-Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes and Antibiotics

An efficient protocol for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes and antibiotics has been successfully established via MOF-derived (MOF = metal-organic framework) Ni, Co-embedded N-doped bimetallic porous carbon nanocomposites (NiCo/NC). Such a NiCo/NC nanocomposite features well-distributed structures, suitable specific surface areas, and more active sites determined by various characterization analyses. The catalyst exhibits higher photocatalytic performance and stability toward the liquid-phase degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation for 60 min, after the adsorption-desorption equilibrium and the thorough degradation into H2O and CO2. Radical quenching experiments further confirmed the dominant effect of electron holes h+ and superoxide radical anions ·O2- for the MB photodegradation process. NiCo/NC was also appropriate for the degradation of Rhodamine B, methyl orange, tetracycline hydrochloride, and norfloxacin. Moreover, NiCo/NC is robust, and its photocatalytic activity is basically maintained after 8 cycles. This work is expected to provide additional information for the design of MOF-derived carbon material with more excellent properties and lay the foundation for further industrial applications.

Impact of length of branched alkyl side chains on thiazolothiazole-based small molecular acceptors in non-fullerene polymer solar cells

It has been reported that the length of branched alkyl side chains on fused-ring electron acceptors confers different impacts on properties versus solubility of BJH blends. However, because this impact on a non-fused acceptor backbone has rarely been studied, we examined the impact of molecular optimization from alkyl chain tuning based on non-fused thiazolothiazole small-molecule acceptors. The length of the side chain on the thiophene bridge was modified from 2-butyloctyl to 2-ethylhexyl, which corresponds to small molecules TTz3(C4C6) and TTz3(C2C4), respectively. Compared with the reported TTz3(C6C8) with long alkyl side chains, TTz3(C4C6) and TTz3(C2C4) exhibited stronger molecular aggregation, higher absorption coefficients, and greater redshifted UV absorption. Unexpectedly, after the alkyl chain was slightly shortened in this type of acceptor system, devices were successfully fabricated, but it was necessary to reduce the blending concentration at low rotation speeds due to the sharp decrease in the solubility of corresponding acceptor materials. Thus, the obtained unfavorable thickness and morphology of the active layer caused a decrease in Jsc and FF. As a consequence, TTz3(C4C6)- and TTz3(C2C4)-based devices showed an unsatisfactory power conversion efficiency of 6.02% and 2.71%, respectively, when donors were paired with the wide bandgap donor J71, which is inferior to that of TTz3(C6C8)-based devices (8.76%). These results indicate that it is challenging to determine the limit of the adjustable range of side chains to modify non-fused thiazolothiazole small-molecule acceptors for high-performance non-fullerene solar cells.

NIR-Triggered Multifunctional NO Nanoplatform for Conquering Thermal Resistance in Biofilms

Photothermal treatment (PTT) has emerged as a promising avenue for biofilm elimination, yet its potential drawbacks, such as local hyperpyrexia and bacterial heat resistance, have posed challenges. To address these concerns, an innovative nanoplatform (Au@mSiO2 -arg/ICG) is devised that integrates phototherapeutic and gas therapeutic functionalities. This multifaceted nanoplatform is composed of mesoporous silica-coated Au nanorods (Au@mSiO2 ), supplemented with l-arginine (l-arg) and indocyanine green (ICG), and is engineered for mild temperature PTT aimed at biofilm eradication. Au@mSiO2 -arg/ICG nanoparticles (NPs) show excellent antibacterial effects through the generation of nitric oxide (NO) gas, heat, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) under 808 nm light irradiation. The ROS generated by ICG initiates a cascade reaction with l-arg, ultimately yielding NO gas molecules. This localized release of NO not only effectively curbs the expression of heat shock proteins 70 mitigating bacterial thermoresistance, but also reduces extracellular polymeric substance allowing better penetration of the therapeutic agents. Furthermore, this nanoplatform achieves an outstanding biofilm elimination rate of over 99% in an abscess model under 808 nm light irradiation (0.8 W·cm-2 ), thereby establishing its potential as a dependable strategy for NO-enhanced mild PTT and antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in clinical settings.

Ameliorating Mitochondrial Dysfunction for the Therapy of Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is currently the second most incurable central neurodegenerative disease resulting from various pathogenesis. As the "energy factory" of cells, mitochondria play an extremely important role in supporting neuronal signal transmission and other physiological activities. Mitochondrial dysfunction can cause and accelerate the occurrence and progression of PD. How to effectively prevent and suppress mitochondrial disorders is a key strategy for the treatment of PD from the root. Therefore, the emerging mitochondria-targeted therapy has attracted considerable interest. Herein, the relationship between mitochondrial dysfunction and PD, the causes and results of mitochondrial dysfunction, and major strategies for ameliorating mitochondrial dysfunction to treat PD are systematically reviewed. The study also prospects the main challenges for the treatment of PD.

Ultrasmall Nanoparticles Regulate Immune Microenvironment by Activating IL-33/ST2 to Alleviate Renal Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a common disease with high morbidity and mortality. Renal IRI can cause the disorder of immune microenvironment and reprograming the immune microenvironment to alleviate excessive inflammatory response is crucial for its treatment. Cytokine IL-33 can improve the immune inflammatory microenvironment by modulating both innate and adaptive immune cells, and serve as an important target for modulating immune microenvironment of renal IRI. Herein, we report that bilobetin-functionalized ultrasmall Cu2- x Se nanoparticles (i.e., CSPB NPs) can activate the PKA/p-CREB/IL-33/ST2 signaling pathway to regulate innate and adaptive immune cells for reprograming the immune microenvironment of IRI-induced acute kidney injury. The biocompatible CSPB NPs can promote the polarization of M1-like macrophages into M2-like macrophages, and the expansion of ILC2 and Treg cells by activating IL-33/ST2 to modulate the excessive immune inflammatory response of renal IRI. More importantly, they can rapidly accumulate at the injured kidney to significantly alleviate IRI. This work demonstrates that modulating the expression of cytokines to reprogram immune microenvironment has great potential in the treatment of renal IRI and other ischemic diseases.

Core-Shell Design of Metastable Phase Catalyst Enables Highly-Performance Selective Hydrogenation

Highly selective semihydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is a highly important reaction for catalytic industry. Developing non-noble metal based catalysts with platinum group metal-like activity and selectivity is extremely crucial yet challenging. Metastable phase catalysts provide a potential candidate to realize high activity, yet the control of selectivity remains an open question. Here, this work first reports a metastable phase core-shell: face-centered cubic (fcc) phase Ag (10 at%) core-metastable hexagonal closest packed (hcp) phase Ni (90 at%) shell catalyst, which represents high conversion rate, high selectivity, and remarkable universality for the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene and its derivatives. More impressively, a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 8241.8 h-1 is achieved, much higher than those of stable phase catalysts and reported platinum group metal based catalysts. Mechanistic investigation reveals that the surface of hcp Ni becomes more oxidized due to electron transfer from hcp Ni shell to fcc Ag core, which decreases the adsorption capacity of styrene on the metastable phase Ni surface, thus preventing full hydrogenation. This work has gained crucial research significance for the design of high performance metastable phase catalysts.

Adsorption-desorption of Atrazine with 9 Agricultural Soils in China

In this work, the characteristics and mechanisms for atrazine adsorption-desorption with 9 types of soils were investigated with batch equilibrium studies, elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy, and UV‒visible spectroscopy. The atrazine sorption data for the 9 soils showed better fits with the Freundlich model than the Langmuir model, except with Red earth in Jiangxi (REJ) The results showed that the adsorption capacity was positively correlated with the organic matter (OM) content and negatively correlated with cation-exchange capacity (CEC) and pH. UV‒visible spectroscopy showed that dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the soil enhanced atrazine adsorption, but the adsorption on different DOM fractions was quite different. In addition, the infrared spectra revealed differences in the functional groups of soils and these functional groups may drive the adsorption process via hydrogen bonding and coordination with the -NH2 groups in atrazine.

Glutathione S-transferase templated copper nanoclusters as a fluorescent probe for turn-on sensing of chlorotetracycline

Hereby, facile-green copper nanoclusters templated by glutathione S-transferase (GST-CuNCs) have been innovatively synthesized via a simple one-pot stirring method at room temperature. The as-prepared nanoclusters exhibited uniform size with satisfactory fluorescence intensity, good stability and low cytotoxicity. Significantly, the fluorescence of the obtained GST-CuNCs could be considerably enhanced by the addition of chlorotetracycline (CTC) rather than other analogues of CTC, which was ascribed to the aggregation-induced enhancement caused by the interaction between CTC and GST. The enhanced fluorescence intensity demonstrated a good linear correlation with the CTC concentration in the range of 30-120 μM (R2 = 0.99517), and the low detection limit was 69.7 nM. Furthermore, the proposed approach showed favorable selectivity and anti-interference toward CTC among prevalent ions and amino acids. Additionally, this nanoprobe was also applied to the quantitative detection of CTC in serum samples with satisfactory outcomes, which demonstrated excellent prospects for practical applications.

Selenium in the treatment of mild-to-moderate Graves' orbitopathy: a 5-year prospective controlled cohort study

PURPOSE

Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is the main extrathyroidal manifestation of Graves' disease. However, limited studies have investigated the actual efficacy of selenium in GO therapy. This longitudinal study explored the effect of selenium on QOL and prognosis of patients with mild-to-moderate GO.

METHODS

We conducted a 5-year prospective controlled cohort clinical trial to determine the effect of selenium on 74 patients with mild-to-moderate GO. Patients received selenium yeast or placebo orally for 6 months and were followed up at 6 months and at 5 years by biochemical examination, ophthalmologist evaluation and QOL questionnaire to assess oculopathy and QOL.

RESULTS

(1) During a follow-up period of 3-6 months, in the selenium group, the symptoms of tearing, grittiness and conjunctival congestion improved (P < 0.01); clinical activity scores and total GO-QOL scores increased relative to baseline (P < 0.01); TRAb was decreased at the 6-month evaluation (P = 0.003); and patients treated with selenium had a higher rate of improvement and a lower rate of worsening than patients treated with placebo (P < 0.05). (2) Exploratory evaluations at 6 months after drug withdrawal confirmed the earlier results; further changes included alleviation of blurred vision and double vision symptoms in the selenium group (P < 0.01). (3) At the 5-year follow-up, compared with baseline, proptosis, clinical activity scores, TRAb level and total GO-QOL scores in both the selenium and placebo groups were significantly improved (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

Six months of selenium supplementation may effectively change the early course of mild-to-moderate GO, but this regimen makes no difference in long-term outcomes.

Heterogenization-Activated Zinc Telluride via Rectifying Interfacial Contact to Afford Synergistic Confinement-Adsorption-Catalysis for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The notorious shuttle effect and sluggish conversion kinetics of intermediate polysulfides (Li2 S4 , Li2 S6 , Li2 S8 ) are severely hindered the large-scale development of Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Rectifying interface effect has been a solution to regulate the electron distribution of catalysts via interfacial charge exchange. Herein, a ZnTe-ZnO heterojunction encapsulated in nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon (ZnTe-O@NC) derived from metal-organic framework is fabricated. Theoretical calculations and experiments prove that the built-in electric field constructed at ZnTe-ZnO heterojunction via the rectifying interface contact, thus promoting the charge transfer as well as enhancing adsorption and conversion kinetics toward polysulfides, thereby stimulating the catalytic activity of the ZnTe. Meanwhile, the nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon acts as confinement substrate also enables fast electrons/ions transport, combining with ZnTe-ZnO heterojunction realize a synergistic confinement-adsorption-catalysis toward polysulfides. As a result, the Li-S batteries with S/ZnTe-O@NC electrodes exhibit an impressive rate capability (639.7 mAh g-1 at 3 C) and cycling performance (70% capacity retention at 1 C over 500 cycles). Even with a high sulfur loading, it still delivers a superior electrochemical performance. This work provides a novel perspective on designing highly catalytic materials to achieve synergistic confinement-adsorption-catalysis for high-performance Li-S batteries.

Bifunctional Smart Textiles with Simultaneous Motion Monitoring and Thermotherapy for Human Joint Injuries

The motion detection and thermotherapy provides a convenient strategy for the diagnosis and rehabilitation assessment of joint injuries. However, it is still challenging to simultaneously achieve accurate joint motion monitoring and on-demand thermotherapy. Herein, core-sheath sensing yarns (CSSYs) is proposed and fabricated for excellent electrical and photothermal heating, which consists of carbon black (CB)-coated nylon (sheath layer), silver-plated nylon and elastic spandex yarns (core layer). The CSSYs demonstrates great joule heating performance, which reaches 75 °C at 2 V applied voltage. The good thermal management performance can be well maintained when weaving these yarns into bifunctional smart textile. Further, the optimized double-ply CSSYs (DPCSSYs) with helically twisted structure possess several appealing sensing performance, including preferable strain sensitivity (0.854), excellent linearity (0.962), and superior durability (over 5000 cycles). The as-woven bifunctional smart textile can provide instant and convenient thermotherapy to the injured joints, and simultaneously monitor the injury and recovery conditions of the joint. Therefore, the designed bifunctional smart textile can provide a promising route for developing next-generation healthcare smart textile.

Hole Transport Layer-Free Low-Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells for Efficient All-Perovskite Tandems

Low-bandgap (LBG, Eg  ≈1.25 eV) tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) play critical roles in constructing efficient all-perovskite tandem solar cells (TSCs) that can surpass the efficiency limit of single-junction solar cells. However, the traditional poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole transport layer (HTL) in LBG PSCs usually restricts device efficiency and stability. Here, a strategy of employing 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid (i.e., taurine) as the interface bridge to fabricate efficient HTL-free LBG PSCs with improved optoelectronic properties of the perovskite absorbers at the buried contacts is reported. Taurine-modified ITO substrate has lower optical losses, better energy level alignment, and higher charge transfer capability than PEDOT:PSS HTL, leading to significantly improved open-circuit voltage (VOC ) and short-circuit current density of corresponding devices. The best-performing LBG PSC with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.50% and an impressive VOC of 0.911 V is realized, enabling all-perovskite TSCs with an efficiency of 26.03%. The taurine-based HTL-free TSCs have highly increased stability, retaining more than 90% and 80% of their initial PCEs after constant operation under 1-sun illumination for 600 h and under 55 °C thermal stress for 950 h, respectively. This work provides a facile strategy for fabricating efficient and stable perovskite devices with a simplified HTL-free architecture.

The Tumor Stemness Indice mRNAsi can Act as Molecular Typing Tool for Lung Adenocarcinoma

Due to the high heterogeneity, lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) cannot be distinguished into precise molecular subtypes, thereby resulting in poor therapeutic effect and low 5-year survival rate clinically. Although the tumor stemness score (mRNAsi) has been shown to accurately characterize the similarity index of cancer stem cells (CSCs), whether mRNAsi can serve as an effective molecular typing tool for LUAD isn't reported to date. In this study, we first demonstrate that mRNAsi is significantly correlated with the prognosis and disease degree of LUAD patients, i.e., the higher the mRNAsi, the worse the prognosis and the higher the disease degree. Second, we identify 449 mRNAsi-related genes based on both weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and univariate regression analysis. Third, our results display that 449 mRNAsi-related genes can accurately distinguish the LUAD patients into two molecular subtypes: ms-H subtype (with high mRNAsi) and ms-L subtype (with low mRNAsi), particularly the ms-H subtype has a worse prognosis. Remarkably, significant differences in clinical characteristics, immune microenvironment, and somatic mutation exist between the two molecular subtypes, which might lead to the poorer prognosis of the ms-H subtype patients than that of the ms-L subtype ones. Finally, we establish a prognostic model containing 8 mRNAsi-related genes, which can effectively predict the survival rate of LUAD patients. Taken together, our work provides the first molecular subtype related to mRNAsi in LUAD, and reveals that these two molecular subtypes, the prognostic model and marker genes may have important clinical value for effectively monitoring and treating LUAD patients.

Modulating Photoinduced Electron Transfer between Photosensitive MOF and Co(II) Proton Reduction Sites for Boosting Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting is the subject of intense research. Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between a photosensitizer (PS) and a proton reduction catalyst is a prerequisite step and crucial to affecting hydrogen production efficiency. Herein, three photoactive metal-organic framework (MOF) systems having two different PET processes where PS and Co(II) centers are either covalently bonded or coexisting to drive photocatalytic H2 production are built. Compared to these two intramolecular PET systems including CoII -Zn-PDTP prepared from the post-synthetic metalation toward uncoordinated pyridine N sites of Zn-PDTP and sole cobalt-based MOF Co-PDTP, the CoII (bpy)3 @Zn-PDTP system impregnated by molecular cocatalyst possessing intermolecular PET process achieves the highest H2 evolution rate of 116.8 mmol g-1 h-1 over a period of 10 h, about 7.5 and 9.3 times compared to CoII -Zn-PDTP and Co-PDTP in visible-light-driven H2 evolution, respectively. Further studies reveal that the enhanced photoactivity in CoII (bpy)3 @Zn-PDTP can be ascribed to the high charge-separation efficiency of Zn-PDTP and the synergistic intermolecular interaction between Zn-PDTP and cobalt complexes. The present work demonstrates that the rational design of PET process between MOFs and catalytic metal sites can be a viable strategy for the development of highly efficient photocatalysts with enhanced photocatalytic activities.

Novel Strain of Paenibacillus phyllosphaerae CS-148 for the Direct Hydrolysis of Raw Starch into Glucose: Isolation and Fermentation Optimization

The conventional process for converting starch to glucose is energy-intensive. To lower the cost of this process, a novel strain of Paenibacillus phyllosphaerae CS-148 was isolated and identified, which could directly hydrolyze raw starch into glucose and accumulate glucose in the fermentation broth. The effects of different organic and inorganic nitrogen sources, the culture temperature, the initial pH, and the agitation speed on the yield of glucose were optimized through the one-factor-at-a-time method. Nine factors were screened by Plackett-Burman design, and three factors (raw corncob starch, yeast extract and (NH4)2SO4) had significant effects on glucose yield. Three significant factors were further optimized using Box-Behnken design. Under the optimized fermentation conditions (raw corncob starch 40.4 g/L, yeast extract 4.27 g/L, (NH4)2SO4 4.39 g/L, KH2PO4 2 g/L, MgSO4`7H2O 2 g/L, FeSO4`7H2O 0.02 g/L, NaCl 2 g/L, KCl 0.5 g/L, inoculums volume 4%, temperature 35 °C, agitation rate 150 rpm, and initial pH 7.0), the maximum glucose yield reached 17.32 ± 0.46 g/L, which is 1.33-fold compared to that by initial fermentation conditions. The maximum conversion rate and glucose productivity were 0.43 ± 0.01 g glucose/g raw corn starch and 0.22 ± 0.01 g/(L·h), respectively. These results implied that P. phyllosphaerae CS-148 could be used in the food industry or fermentation industry at a low cost.

Mechanistic insights into super-enhancer-driven genes as prognostic signatures in patients with glioblastoma

BACKGROUND

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most common malignant brain tumors in adults and is characterized by high aggressiveness and rapid progression, poor treatment, high recurrence rate, and poor prognosis. Although super-enhancer (SE)-driven genes haven been recognized as prognostic markers for several cancers, whether it can be served as effective prognostic markers for patients with GBM has not been evaluated.

METHODS

We first combined histone modification data with transcriptome data to identify SE-driven genes associated with prognosis in patients with GBM. Second, we developed a SE-driven differentially expressed genes (SEDEGs) risk score prognostic model by univariate Cox analysis, KM survival analysis, multivariate Cox analysis and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression. Its reliability in predicting was verified by two external data sets. Third, through mutation analysis, immune infiltration, we explored the molecular mechanisms of prognostic genes. Next, Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer (GDSC) and the Connectivity Map (cMap) database were employed to assess different sensitivities to chemotherapeutic agents and small-molecule drug candidates between high- and low-risk patients. Finally, SEanalysis database was chosen to identify SE-driven transcription factors (TFs) regulating prognostic markers which will reveal a potential SE-driven transcriptional regulatory network.

RESULTS

First, we developed a 11-gene risk score prognostic model (NCF2, MTHFS, DUSP6, G6PC3, HOXB2, EN2, DLEU1, LBH, ZEB1-AS1, LINC01265, and AGAP2-AS1) selected from 1,154 SEDEGs, which is not only an independent prognostic factor for patients, but also can effectively predict the survival rate of patients. The model can effectively predict 1-, 2- and 3-year survival of patients and was validated in external Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets. Second, the risk score was positively correlated with the infiltration of regulatory T cell, CD4 memory activated T cell, activated NK cell, neutrophil, resting mast cell, M0 macrophage, and memory B cell. Third, we found that high-risk patients showed higher sensitivity than low-risk patients to both 27 chemotherapeutic agents and 4 small-molecule drug candidates which might benefit further precision therapy for GBM patients. Finally, 13 potential SE-driven TFs imply how SE regulates GBM patient's prognosis.

CONCLUSION

The SEDEG risk model not only helps to elucidate the impact of SEs on the course of GBM, but also provides a bright future for prognosis determination and choice of treatment for GBM patients.

All-In-One Evaporators for Efficient Solar-Driven Simultaneous Collection of Water and Electricity

The shortage of fossil fuels and freshwater resources has become a serious global issue. Using solar energy to extract clean water with a photothermal conversion technology is a green and sustainable desalination method. Integrated electricity generation during the desalination process maximizes energy utilization efficiency. Herein, a solar-driven steam and electricity generation (SSEG) system based on an all-in-one evaporator is prepared via a scalable technology. Carbon black is selected as the absorber for solar energy harvesting as well as the functional substance for simultaneous electricity generation. Fabric substrate with flexible structure, porous channel, and capillary effect is vital for directional brine supply, multiple solar absorption, and thermal management. The high evaporation rate (1.87 kg m-2  h-1 ) and voltage output (324 mV) can be achieved with an all-in-one device. The stable electricity output can be maintained over 40000 s. The SSEG performance remains constant after 15 operation cycles or 20 wash cycles. The integrated device balances excellent effectiveness and practicality, providing a viable path for clean desalination and electricity generation.

Selective determination of cuprous ion in copper dissolving solution based on bathocuproine-modified expanded graphite electrode

The presence of cuprous ions in the copper-dissolving solution significantly affects the microstructure of copper plated surface. Fewer quantitative analyses of cuprous ions in the copper foil productive process had rarely been involved so far. In the present work, a novel electrochemical sensor of the bathocuproine (BCP) modified expanded graphite (EG) electrode was developed for the selective determination of cuprous ions. EG has a large surface area, good adsorption, and excellent electrochemical performance which remarkably promoted analytical sensitivity. Meanwhile, the selective determination of the BCP-EG electrode for cuprous ions in the coexistence of ten thousand times of copper ions have been achieved on the benefit of the special coordination of BCP to cuprous ions. In the coexistence of 50 g/L copper ions, the analytical performance of the BCP-EG electrode for the determination of cuprous ions had been examined. The results represented a wide detection range of cuprous ions in the range of 1.0 μg/L-5.0 mg/L, with a low detection limit of 0.18 μg/L (S/N = 3) and the BCP-EG electrode has great selectivity to cuprous ions in presence of various interferences. The analytical selectively for cuprous ions supported by the proposed electrode would be a potential analytical tool for quality improvement in electrolytic copper foil manufacturing.

Roles of bile acids signaling in neuromodulation under physiological and pathological conditions

Bile acids (BA) are important physiological molecules not only mediating nutrients absorption and metabolism in peripheral tissues, but exerting neuromodulation effect in the central nerve system (CNS). The catabolism of cholesterol to BA occurs predominantly in the liver by the classical and alternative pathways, or in the brain initiated by the neuronal-specific enzyme CYP46A1 mediated pathway. Circulating BA could cross the blood brain barrier (BBB) and reach the CNS through passive diffusion or BA transporters. Brain BA might trigger direct signal through activating membrane and nucleus receptors or affecting activation of neurotransmitter receptors. Peripheral BA may also provide the indirect signal to the CNS via farnesoid X receptor (FXR) dependent fibroblast growth factor 15/19 (FGF15/19) pathway or takeda G protein coupled receptor 5 (TGR5) dependent glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) pathway. Under pathological conditions, alterations in BA metabolites have been discovered as potential pathogenic contributors in multiple neurological disorders. Attractively, hydrophilic ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), especially tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) can exert neuroprotective roles by attenuating neuroinflammation, apoptosis, oxidative or endoplasmic reticulum stress, which provides promising therapeutic effects for treatment of neurological diseases. This review summarizes recent findings highlighting the metabolism, crosstalk between brain and periphery, and neurological functions of BA to elucidate the important role of BA signaling in the brain under both physiological and pathological conditions.

The Complete Chloroplast Genome Sequence of Staphylea holocarpa (Staphyleaceae)

Staphylea holocarpa (Hemsley 1895) is an ornamental deciduous shrub or tree in the family Staphyleaceae. As the shortage of the wild resources, S. holocarpa is also a rare plant. The revelation of the species origin and evolution progress and the relation. Therefore, the S. holocarpa complete chloroplast genome sequence was completed and characterized by de novo assembly. The cp genome length of S. holocarpa was 160,461 bp and it has a typical quadripartite structure, consisted of an 89,760 bp large single-copy region and a 18,639 bp small single-copy region, which were divided by two inverted repeat regions of 26,031 bp. After genome annotation, it comes to 130 genes that were predicted, which includes 85, 8, and 37 encoded proteins, rRNA, and tRNA, respectively. A phylogenetic analysis has shown that the S. holocarpa cp genome is related to the Staphylea trifolia. This work will be useful for further population genomic and phylogenetic studies of S. holocarpa.

Effects of new hypoglycemic drugs on cardiac remodeling: a systematic review and network meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

In recent years, the incidence of diabetes mellitus has been increasing annually, and cardiovascular complications secondary to diabetes mellitus have become the leading cause of death in diabetic patients. Considering the high incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) combined with cardiovascular disease (CVD), some new hypoglycemic agents with cardiovascular protective effects have attracted extensive attention. However, the specific role of these regimens in ventricular remodeling remains unknown. The purpose of this network meta-analysis was to compare the effects of sodium glucose cotransporter type 2 inhibitor (SGLT-2i), glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor (DPP-4i) on ventricular remodeling in patients with T2DM and/or CVD.

METHODS

Articles published prior to 24 August 2022 were retrieved in four electronic databases: the Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science. This meta-analysis included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and a small number of cohort studies. The differences in mean changes of left ventricular ultrasonic parameters between the treatment and control groups were compared.

RESULTS

A total of 31 RCTs and 4 cohort studies involving 4322 patients were analyzed. GLP-1RA was more significantly associated with improvement in left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVESD) [MD = -0.38 mm, 95% CI (-0.66, -0.10)] and LV mass index (LVMI) [MD = -1.07 g/m2, 95% CI (-1.71, -0.42)], but significantly decreased e' [MD = -0.43 cm/s 95% CI (-0.81, -0.04)]. DPP-4i was more strongly associated with improvement in e' [MD = 3.82 cm/s, 95% CI (2.92,4.7)] and E/e'[MD = -5.97 95% CI (-10.35, -1.59)], but significantly inhibited LV ejection fraction (LVEF) [MD = -0.89% 95% CI (-1.76, -0.03)]. SGLT-2i significantly improved LVMI [MD = -0.28 g/m2, 95% CI (-0.43, -0.12)] and LV end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) [MD = -0.72 ml, 95% CI (-1.30, -0.14)] in the overall population, as well as E/e' and SBP in T2DM patients combined with CVD, without showing any negative effect on left ventricular function.

CONCLUSION

The results of the network meta-analysis provided high certainty to suggest that SGLT-2i may be more effective in cardiac remodeling compared to GLP-1RA and DPP-4i. While GLP-1RA and DPP-4i may have a tendency to improve cardiac systolic and diastolic function respectively. SGLT-2i is the most recommended drug for reversing ventricular remodeling in this meta-analysis.

Advances in the adenylation domain: discovery of diverse non-ribosomal peptides

Non-ribosomal peptide synthetases are mega-enzyme assembly lines that synthesize many clinically useful compounds. As a gatekeeper, they have an adenylation (A)-domain that controls substrate specificity and plays an important role in product structural diversity. This review summarizes the natural distribution, catalytic mechanism, substrate prediction methods, and in vitro biochemical analysis of the A-domain. Taking genome mining of polyamino acid synthetases as an example, we introduce research on mining non-ribosomal peptides based on A-domains. We discuss how non-ribosomal peptide synthetases can be engineered based on the A-domain to obtain novel non-ribosomal peptides. This work provides guidance for screening non-ribosomal peptide-producing strains, offers a method to discover and identify A-domain functions, and will accelerate the engineering and genome mining of non-ribosomal peptide synthetases. Ameliorating Mitochondrial Dysfunction of Neurons by Biomimetic Targeting Nanoparticles Mediated Mitochondrial Biogenesis to Boost the Therapy of Parkinson's Disease

Mitochondrial dysfunction of neurons is the core pathogenesis of incurable Parkinson's disease (PD). It is crucial to ameliorate the mitochondrial dysfunction of neurons for boosting the therapy of PD. Herein, the remarkable promotion of mitochondrial biogenesis to ameliorate mitochondrial dysfunction of neurons and improve the treatment of PD by using mitochondria-targeted biomimetic nanoparticles, which are Cu_{2- x} Se-based nanoparticles functionalized with curcumin and wrapped with DSPE-PEG₂₀₀₀ -TPP-modified macrophage membrane (denoted as CSCCT NPs), is reported. These nanoparticles can efficiently target mitochondria of damaged neurons in an inflammatory environment, and mediate the signaling pathway of NAD⁺ /SIRT1/PGC-1α/PPARγ/NRF1/TFAM to alleviate 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP⁺ )-induced neuronal toxicity. They can reduce the mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, restore mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), protect the integrity of mitochondrial respiratory chain, and ameliorate mitochondrial dysfunction via promoting mitochondrial biogenesis, which synergistically improve the motor disorders and anxiety behavior of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced PD mice. This study demonstrates that targeting mitochondrial biogenesis to ameliorate mitochondrial dysfunction has a great potential in the treatment of PD and mitochondria-related diseases.

Genetic variants of SOS2, MAP2K1 and RASGRF2 in the RAS pathway genes predict survival of HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma patients

The RAS pathway participates in the cascade of proliferation and cell division process, and the activated RAS pathway can lead to tumorigenesis including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, few studies have explored the effects of genetic variants in the RAS pathway-related genes on the survival of patients with HBV-related HCC. In the present study, we assessed the associations between 11,658 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 62 RAS pathway genes and the overall survival (OS) of 866 HBV-related HCC individuals, which were randomly split (1:1) into discovery and validation datasets. As a result, three potentially functional SNPs were identified, based on multivariable cox proportional hazards regression analyses, in SOS Ras/Rho guanine nucleotide exchange factor 2 (SOS2, rs4632055 A > G), Ras protein-specific guanine nucleotide releasing factor 2 (RASGRF2, rs26418A > G) and mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAP2K1,rs57120695 C > T), which were significantly and independently associated with OS of HBV-related HCC patients [adjusted hazards ratios (HRs) of 1.42, 1.32 and 1.50, respectively; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.14 to 1.76, 1.15 to 1.53 and 1.15 to 1.97, respectively; P = 0.001, < 0.001 and 0.003, respectively]. Additionally, the joint effects as the unfavorable genotypes of these three SNPs showed a significant association with the poor survival of HCC (trend test P < 0.001). The expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) analysis further revealed that the rs4632055 G allele and the rs26418 A allele were associated with lower mRNA expression levels of SOS2 and RASGRF2, respectively. Collectively, these potentially functional SNPs of RASGRF2, SOS2 and M2PAK1 may become potential prognostic biomarkers for HBV-related HCC after hepatectomy.

Identification of the regulatory mechanism of ACE2 in COVID-19-induced kidney damage with systems genetics approach

Studies showed that SARS-CoV-2 can directly target the kidney and induce renal damage. As the cell surface receptor for SARS-CoV-2 infection, the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) plays a pivotal role for renal physiology and function. Thus, it is important to understand ACE2 through which pathway influences the pathogenesis of renal damage induced by COVID-19. In this study, we first performed an eQTL mapping for Ace2 in kidney tissues in 53 BXD mice strains. Results demonstrated that Ace2 is highly expressed and strongly controlled by a genetic locus on chromosome 16 in the kidney, with six genes (Dnase1, Vasn, Usp7, Abat, Mgrn1, and Rbfox1) dominated as the upstream modulator, as they are highly correlated with Ace2 expression. Gene co-expression analysis showed that Ace2 co-variates are significantly involved in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) pathway which acts as a reno-protector. Importantly, we also found that Ace2 is positively correlated with Pdgf family members, particularly Pdgfc, which showed the most association among the 76 investigated growth factors. Mammalian Phenotype Ontology enrichment indicated that the cognate transcripts for both Ace2 and Pdgfc were mainly involved in regulating renal physiology and morphology. Among which, Cd44, Egfr, Met, Smad3, and Stat3 were identified as hub genes through protein-protein interaction analysis. Finally, in aligning with our systems genetics findings, we found ACE2, pdgf family members, and RAS genes decreased significantly in the CAKI-1 kidney cancer cells treated with S protein and receptor binding domain structural protein. Collectively, our data suggested that ACE2 work with RAS, PDGFC, as well as their cognate hub genes to regulate renal function, which could guide for future clinical prevention and targeted treatment for COVID-19-induced renal damage outcomes. KEY MESSAGES: • Ace2 is highly expressed and strongly controlled by a genetic locus on chromosome 16 in the kidney. • Ace2 co-variates are enriched in the RAS pathway. • Ace2 is strongly correlated with the growth factor Pdgfc. • Ace2 and Pdgfc co-expressed genes involved in the regulation of renal physiology and morphology. • SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein induces down-regulation of Ace2, RAS, and Pdgfc.

Functional and structural alterations of dorsal attention network in preclinical and early-stage Alzheimer's disease

OBJECTIVES

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) are known as the preclinical and early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The dorsal attention network (DAN) is mainly responsible for the "top-down" attention process. However, previous studies mainly focused on single functional modality and limited structure. This study aimed to investigate the multimodal alterations of DAN in SCD and aMCI to assess their diagnostic value in preclinical and early-stage AD.

METHODS

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was carried out to measure the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), and functional connectivity (FC). Structural MRI was used to calculate the gray matter volume (GMV) and cortical thickness. Moreover, receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to distinguish these alterations in SCD and aMCI.

RESULTS

The SCD and aMCI groups showed both decreased ReHo in the right middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and decreased GMV compared to healthy controls (HCs). Especially in the SCD group, there were increased fALFF and increased ReHo in the left inferior occipital gyrus (IOG), decreased fALFF and increased FC in the left inferior parietal lobule (IPL), and reduced cortical thickness in the right inferior temporal gyrus (ITG). Furthermore, functional and structural alterations in the SCD and aMCI groups were closely related to episodic memory (EM), executive function (EF), and information processing speed (IPS). The combination of multiple indicators of DAN had a high accuracy in differentiating clinical stages.

CONCLUSIONS

Our current study demonstrated functional and structural alterations of DAN in SCD and aMCI, especially in the MTG, IPL, and SPL. Furthermore, cognitive performance was closely related to these significant alterations. Our study further suggested that the combined multiple indicators of DAN could be acted as the latent neuroimaging markers of preclinical and early-stage AD for their high diagnostic value.

Anti-vibriosis bioactive molecules from Arctic Penicillium sp. Z2230

Vibrio species (Vibrio sp.) is a class of Gram-negative aquatic bacteria that causes vibriosis in aquaculture, which have resulted in big economic losses. Utilization of antibiotics against vibriosis has brought concerns on antibiotic resistance, and it is essential to explore potential antibiotic alternatives. In this study, seven compounds (compounds 1-7) were isolated from the Arctic endophytic fungus Penicillium sp. Z2230, among which compounds 3, 4, and 5 showed anti-Vibrio activity. The structures of the seven compounds were comprehensively elucidated, and the antibacterial mechanism of compounds 3, 4, and 5 was explored by molecular docking. The results suggested that the anti-Vibrio activity could come from inhibition of the bacterial peptide deformylase (PDF). This study discovered three Penicillium-derived compounds to be potential lead molecules for developing novel anti-Vibrio agents, and identified PDF as a promising antibacterial target. It also expanded the bioactive diversity of polar endophytic fungi by showing an example in which the secondary metabolites of a polar microbe were a good source of natural medicine.

The long-term dynamic relationship between communicable disease spread, economic prosperity, greenhouse gas emissions, and government health expenditures: preparing for COVID-19-like pandemics

The spread of communicable diseases, such as COVID-19, has a detrimental effect on our socio-economic structure. In a dynamic log-run world, socio-economic and environmental factors interact to spread communicable diseases. We investigated the long-term interdependence of communicable disease spread, economic prosperity, greenhouse gas emissions, and government health expenditures in India's densely populated economy using a variance error correction (VEC) approach. The VEC model was validated using stationarity, cointegration, autocorrelation, heteroscedasticity, and normality tests. Our impulse response and variance decomposition analyses revealed that economic prosperity (GNI) significantly impacts the spread of communicable diseases, greenhouse gas emissions, government health expenditures, and GNI. Current health expenditures can reduce the need for future increases, and the spread of communicable diseases is detrimental to economic growth. Developing economies should prioritize economic growth and health spending to combat pandemics. Simultaneously, the adverse effects of economic prosperity on environmental degradation should be mitigated through policy incentives.

Molecular dynamics simulation of adsorption and separation of xylene isomers by Cu-HKUST-1

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used in the adsorption separation of various gases. A fundamental understanding of the effective separation of xylene isomers helps improve aromatic products' separation efficiency and reduce industrial separation costs. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations combined with Molecular Science is widely used to predict gas adsorption and diffusion in single crystals with metal-organic frameworks. We performed a GCMC + MD combined approach to study xylene isomers' adsorption and separation in Cu-HKUST-1 to predict the permeability and selectivity of the ternary gas mixture in the MOF with the adsorption and diffusion usage data. Most current studies take into account the computational cost and difficulty. Most recent research models are limited to the adsorption of a single or specific molecule, such as hydrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, etc. For this reason, we report an attempt to study the adsorption separation of aromatic gases (p-xylene/o-xylene/m-xylene) based on Cu-HKUST-1 single-crystal materials based on some previous research methods with an appropriate increase in computational cost. To predict the adsorption selectivity and permeability of the ternary mixture of xylene isomers on the MOF surface, the model simulation calculates key parameters of gas adsorption, including gas adsorption volume (N), the heat of adsorption (Q st), Henry coefficient (K), and diffusion coefficient (D).

Transplantation of Differentiated Tonsil-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Ameliorates Murine Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy via Autophagy Activation

BACKGROUND

Skeletal muscles play many important roles in the human body and any malfunction or disorder of the skeletal muscles can lead to a reduced quality of life. Some skeletal dysfunctions are acquired, such as sarcopenia but others are congenital. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is one of the most common forms of hereditary muscular dystrophy and is caused by a deficiency of the protein, Dystrophin. Currently, there is no clear treatment for DMD, there are only methods that can alleviate the symptoms of the disease. Mesenchymal stem cells, including tonsil-derived mesenchymal stem cells (TMSCs) have been shown to differentiate into skeletal muscle cells (TMSC-myocyte) and can be one of the resources for the treatment of DMD. Skeletal muscle cell characteristics of TMSC-myocytes have been confirmed through changes in morphology and expression of skeletal muscle markers such as Myogenin, Myf6, and MYH families after differentiation.

MEOTHDS

Based on these characteristics, TMSC-myocytes have been transplanted into mdx mice, a mouse model of DMD, to investigate whether they can help improve the symptoms of DMD. The red fluorescent protein gene was transduced into TMSC (TMSC-R) for tracking transplanted cells.

RESULTS

Prior to transplantation (TP), it was confirmed whether TMSC-R-myocytes had the same differentiation potential as TMSC-myocytes. Increased expression of dystrophin and autophagy markers in the TP group compared with the sham group was confirmed in the gastrocnemius muscle 12 weeks after TP.

CONCLUSION

These results demonstrate muscle regeneration and functional recovery of mdx via autophagy activation following TMSC-myocyte TP.

Enhanced Adsorption-Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants via a ZIF-67-Derived Co-N Codoped Carbon Matrix Catalyst

Stable and efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants has been achieved via a ZIF-67-derived Co-embedded N-doped nanoporous carbon material catalyst (Co-N/C). The catalyst features a well-distributed structure, suitable specific surface area, and more active sites according to the various characterization analyses. The photocatalytic activity of Co-N/C was evaluated by the degradation of the target pollutant Rhodamine B (RhB). As a result, RhB could establish an adsorption-desorption equilibrium in the dark within 30 min and was thoroughly degraded into H2O and CO2 by Co-N/C under 500 W visible light irradiation in 40 min. Moreover, radical-quenching experiments and reactive oxygen species monitoring were performed to further probe the plausible photodegradation mechanism of RhB. Co-N/C is also appropriate for other alternative dyes and antibiotics affording ideal removal efficiencies. After the reaction, Co-N/C could be facilely separated by an external magnetic field and reused for eight reaction cycles without obvious deactivation of its photocatalytic properties. This study is expected to provide an instructive guideline for the design of efficient and recyclable composite photocatalysts derived from metal-organic frameworks for a broad range of environmental remediation processes.

Interleukin-33 regulates the functional state of microglia

Microglia, the most prominent resident immune cells, exhibit multiple functional states beyond their immunomodulatory roles. Non-immune functions such as synaptic reorganization, removal of cellular debris, and deposition of abnormal substances are mediated by phagocytosis of normal or enhanced microglia. Activation or migration of microglia occurs when environmental cues are altered. In response to pathological factors, microglia change into various phenotypes, preventing or exacerbating tissue damage. Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is an important cytokine that regulates innate immunity, and microglia are thought to be its target cells. Here, we outline the role of IL-33 in the expression of microglial functions such as phagocytosis, migration, activation, and inflammatory responses. We focus on microglial properties and diverse functional states in health and disease, including the different effects of IL-33 perturbation on microglia in vivo and in vitro. We also highlight several well-established mechanisms of microglial function mediated by IL-33, which may be initiators and regulators of microglial function and require elucidation and expansion of the underlying mechanisms.

Isolation and characterization of a novel human intestinal Enterococcus faecium FUA027 capable of producing urolithin A from ellagic acid

Urolithin A (UA) has received considerable research attention because of its health benefits. However, only a few strains have been reported to produce UA from ellagic acid (EA), and the molecular mechanisms underlying the gut microbiota-mediated transformation of ellagic acid into urolithin A is limited. In the present study, a single strain FUA027 capable of converting ellagic acid into UA in vitro was isolated from the fecal samples. The strain was identified as Enterococcus faecium through the morphological, physiological, biochemical and genetic tests. UA was produced at the beginning of the stationary phase and its levels peaked at 50 h, with the highest concentration being 10.80 μM. The strain Enterococcus faecium FUA027 is the first isolated strain of Enterococcus sp. producing urolithin A from ellagic acid, which may be developed as probiotics and used to explore molecular mechanisms underlying the biotransformation of ellagic acid into UA.

The application of biomass gasification products, design of the gasifier, type of biomass feedstock, gasification agents, and gasification parameters are key for the biomass gasification process. This work applies bibliometric approaches to provide a comprehensive and objective analysis of worldwide biomass gasification study trends over the period from 2006 to 2020 according to the Web Of Science core collection data. A total of 3222 articles associated with biomass gasification was retrieved, and its number grew annually. The subjects of study are diversified, primarily classified into "Energy & Fuels", "Engineering Chemical", and "Green Sustainable Science Technology". Moreover, Energy was a top published journal in the field of biomass gasification. Austrian contributors had the majority of publications, next to China and the USA. Liejin Luo from Xi'an Jiaotong University possessed the greatest H-index. Keyword evaluation showed that biomass gasification is a current hotspot, among which life-cycle assessment, sustainability, and deep processing of gasification products are future research directions. This work is predicted to offer further research interest in biomass gasification.

Panic disorder aging characteristics: The role of telomerase reverse transcriptase gene and brain function

Panic disorder (PD) causes serious functional damage and disability and accelerates the process of individual aging. The pathological basis of PD is the same as that of age-related diseases, which is proposed as a new viewpoint in recent years. Memory decline and social functional impairment are common manifestations of accelerated aging in PD. The function of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and telomere length (TL) is abnormal in patients with aging and PD. However, the molecular mechanism behind remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between TERT gene expression (including DNA methylation) and the changes in PD aging characteristics (memory and social function). By TERT gene knockout mice, we found that loss of TERT attenuated the acquisition of recent fear memory during contextual fear conditioning. This study reported that a significantly lower methylation level of human TERT (hTERT) gene was detected in PD patients compared with healthy control and particularly decreased CpG methylation in the promoter region of hTERT was associated with the clinical characteristics in PD. Regional homogeneity (ReHo) analysis showed that the methylation of hTERT (cg1295648) influenced social function of PD patients through moderating the function of the left postcentral gyrus (PCG). This indicates that the hTERT gene may play an important role in the pathological basis of PD aging and may become a biological marker for evaluating PD aging. These findings provide multidimensional evidence for the underlying genetic and pathological mechanisms of PD.

Functional Characterization of Clostridium tyrobutyricum L319: A Promising Next-Generation Probiotic for Short-Chain Fatty Acid Production

Probiotics contribute a lot to human health and the occurrence of diseases. Correspondingly, probiotics’ safety evaluation and probiotic properties have received increasing attention in the food industry and disease treatment. Clostridium tyrobutyricum L319 is a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing strain isolated from Grana Padano cheese with a blowing defect. Our previous study has shown its safety at the genomic level. This study focused more on the safety evaluation and probiotic properties in vitro. According to the results, this strain has no potential virulence factors or the possibility of antibiotic resistance genes propagation. It also fulfilled several criteria to be used as a probiotic, including significant hydrophobicity under an acidic condition (pH 5.0) and resistance to simulate gastric juice and intestinal juice. Additionally, this strain was found to be tolerant to the harsh conditions of the external environment, including resistance to low (20°C) and high (50°C) temperatures, high salts (3% NaCl), and low pH (pH 5.0). Finally, we found that this strain could ferment prebiotics, such as chito-oligosaccharides, to produce SCFAs. It exhibited excellent growth performance whether using chito-oligosaccharide as a sole carbon source or combining glucose as the mixed carbon source. Furthermore, chito-oligosaccharide and glucose (1:1) mixed carbon sources were the optimal strategy for the production of SCFAs. Our findings demonstrated that this strain might be considered a promising candidate for future use as a probiotic to promote health benefits.

Study on the Failure Mechanism and Permeability Characteristics of Gas Containing Sandstone Intercalated Coal

The deformation failure mechanism and permeability characteristics of loaded coal sandstone samples under triaxial stress loading were analyzed based on the experimental platform of the coal-rock fluid solid coupling triaxial servo system. The results show that the stress-strain curve of coal intercalated sandstone can be divided into five stages: compaction closure, elastic deformation, stable fracture expansion, unstable fracture expansion, and post-peak strain softening. With the increase of confining pressure, the peak strength and residual strength of the sample increase linearly with the confining pressure. The permeability of the sample decreases slowly with the increase of axial strain, increases rapidly after reaching the stage of unstable fracture propagation, and changes in "V" shape. The relationship between initial permeability and confining pressure can be fitted with exponential function. Based on the fracture volumetric strain model, the progressive failure mechanism of damage expansion of coal mixed sandstone is discussed. The fracture volume strain of each sample under different stress states is given, and the failure mode and crack distribution characteristics of the sample are obtained. The research results can provide reference for reasonable, safe, and efficient coal mining and gas disaster control.

Efficacy and Safety of Topical Therapy With Botanical Products for Melasma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Botanical products have been increasingly popular in topical therapies for melasma, as presumed safer and milder than fully synthetic products. Although the efficacy of different topical botanicals has recently been substantiated through randomized controlled trials (RCTs), there is a lack of sufficiently pooled evidence on their efficacy and safety for the treatment of melasma. Herein, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted on the efficacy and safety of topical botanical products for the treatment of melasma, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). All RCTs on the use of topical botanical products for the treatment of melasma in humans were included, except for trials enrolling pregnant patients. The primary outcome was Melasma Area and Severity Index (MASI) or its variation. The secondary outcomes included Mexameter^® reading, melasma improvement evaluated by participants, and any reported adverse events (AEs). As a result, twelve eligible trials comprising 695 patients with melasma from 6 different countries were included. The topical botanical products contained active ingredients which varied among trials as follows: herb-derived molecule, extracts of a single herb, and extracts of compound herbs. Topical therapy with botanical products significantly improved melasma with a large effect on MASI reduction (SMD −0.79, 95% CI −1.14 to −0.44, p < 0.00001), and a moderate effect on Mexameter^® reading reduction (SMD −0.52, 95% CI −0.81 to 0.23, p = 0.0005), when compared with placebo. It also showed a similar improvement of melasma with a better safety profile (RR 0.37, 95% CI 0.15–0.88, p = 0.02), when compared with active-comparators. Botanical products were well-tolerated across studies, with no serious AEs reported. Despite the limitations such as small sample size, short duration of follow up and varied botanical products, this work still represents the best level of evidence currently available on topical use of botanical products on melasma. Moreover, it should be noted that more well-designed studies are needed before recommending topical botanical products as a viable treatment option for melasma.

Interactions between Coal and Solvent during the Solvent Extraction of Coal in View of Free Radicals

In this study, variations in the free radical concentration, degree of swelling (Q), and extraction yield of Buertai coal (C%, 80.4%) in 11 solvents with different characteristics were determined to investigate the interaction between the coal and solvent, as well as the bond cleavage during solvent extraction. Derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) results for the residues and raw coal were compared to confirm whether the covalent bond breaks during solvent extraction. The free radical concentration decreases in certain solvents but increases in a few others. The relative free radical concentration, Q, and extraction yield are positively correlated. The charge-transfer capability of the solvent, and in particular its electron-donating capability, plays an essential role in influencing the interaction between the coal and solvent. The increase in the free radical concentration during solvent extraction can be attributed to (1) the formation or decomposition of charge-transfer complexes, (2) dissociation of charge-transfer complexes into radical ions, and (3) breakage of weak covalent bonds. DTG results show the occurrence of weak covalent bonds breakage at temperatures of 133.9-320.1 °C during solvent extraction due to the reduction of the bond energy caused by the formation of radical ions.

Effect of Poor Nutritional Status and Comorbidities on the Occurrence and Outcome of Pneumonia in Elderly Adults

Background: Malnutrition and comorbidity are two common geriatric syndromes. The pathology of pneumonia is multifactorial, making its diagnosis and management a great challenge. Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) are two main types of pneumonia. However, the effect of geriatric syndromes on pneumonia and its prognosis have not been clearly explored. Methods: We collected the relevant electronic data of inpatients aged over 65 years and diagnosed with pneumonia in the Geriatrics Department Building of the First Affiliated Hospital with Nanjing Medical University between December 2018 and December 2019, and further divided them into HAP group and CAP group. The correlations of age, age-adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index (aCCI), basic diseases and nutritional indexes (i.e., albumin, electrolyte, hemoglobin) with pneumonia and prognosis were analyzed. We analyzed the associations between infection prognosis/infection level and age, nutritional status, aCCI and underlying diseases, using linear regression model. The box plot was applied to present infection outcome, and the nomogram was built for predicting infection outcomes. We utilized the heat map to show the associations between nutritional status and infection level/outcome in all infected patients, HAP, and CAP. Results: The final study comprised samples of 669 pneumonia patients divided into HAP group (n = 517) and CAP group (n = 152). In all patients, the infection outcome was negatively correlated with age (P = 0.013). The level of albumin was negatively correlated with infection prognosis in all patients (P = 0.03), and negatively correlated with neutrophil count and CRP (P = 0.008, P < 0.001). ACCI was positively correlated with CRP (P = 0.003). The prognosis was negatively associated with age and albumin level. In the patients with basic dementia/Alzheimer's disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/asthma, the prognosis was worse. Conclusion: There was a correlation between poor nutritional status-related indexes and inflammatory indexes. A poor nutritional status might predict a high risk of pneumonia in elderly adults. Advanced age and comorbidities were risk factors for the occurrence and poor prognosis of pneumonia. Therefore, comorbidities should be well-treated in the elderly with pneumonia.

OsDOF11 Affects Nitrogen Metabolism by Sucrose Transport Signaling in Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Carbon and nitrogen antagonistically regulate multiple developmental processes. However, the molecular mechanism affecting nitrogen metabolism by sucrose transport remains poorly defined. Previously, we noted that Oryza sativa DNA BINDING WITH ONE FINGER 11 (OsDOF11) mediated sucrose transport by binding to the promoter regions of Sucrose Transporter 1 (SUT1), Oryza sativa Sugars Will Eventually be Exported Transporters 11 (OsSWEET11), and OsSWEET14. Here, we note that OsDOF11 promotes nitrogen uptake and then maintains the ratio of fresh weight to dry weight in seedling plants and the effective leaf blade at flowering stages. Mutants of the sucrose transporter gene OsSWEET14 displayed a phenotype similar to that of OsDOF11. By microarray analysis and qRT-PCR in OsDOF11 mutant plants, OsDOF11 affected the transcription level of amino acid metabolism-related genes. We further found that mainly amino acid contents were reduced in flag leaves but increased in seeds. Both sugar and organic nitrogen changes caused the ratio of fresh weight to dry weight to decrease in OsDOF11 mutant seedling plants and mature leaves, which might result in vigorous reduced metabolic activity and become less susceptible to stress. These results demonstrated that OsDOF11 affected nitrogen metabolism by sugar distribution in rice, which provided new insight that OsDOF11 coordinated with C and N balance to maintain plant growth activity.

Design of Crystalline Reduction-Oxidation Cluster-Based Catalysts for Artificial Photosynthesis

Metal cluster-based compounds have difficulty finishing the photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂RR) and water oxidation reaction (WOR) simultaneously because of the big challenge in realizing the coexistence of independently and synergistically reductive and oxidative active sites in one compound. Herein, we elaborately designed and synthesized one kind of crystalline reduction-oxidation (RO) cluster-based catalysts connecting reductive {M ₃ L ₈ (H ₂ O) ₂ } (M = Zn, Co, and Ni for RO-1, 2, 3 respectively) cluster and oxidative {PMo₉V₇O₄₄} cluster through a single oxygen atom bridge to achieve artificial photosynthesis successfully. These clusters can all photocatalyze CO₂-to-CO and H₂O-to-O₂ reactions simultaneously, of which the CO yield of RO-1 is 13.8 μmol/g·h, and the selectivity is nearly 100%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the concomitantly catalytically reductive and oxidative active sites (for CO₂RR and WOR, respectively) and the effective electron transfer between the sites in these RO photocatalysts are the key factors to complete the overall photosynthesis.

A methodologically sound survey of Chinese consumers' willingness to participate in courier, express, and parcel companies' green logistics

The environmental footprint of courier, express, and parcel (CEP) logistics is significant and growing, owing to increased e-commerce. Consumer willingness to participate in the green logistics of CEPs, however, has been understudied. This study addresses this knowledge gap by surveying 155 Chinese consumers about their willingness to participate in CEP green logistics. Additionally, this research identifies some technical issues with previous survey research. Three main factors were extracted after the data were tested for reliability and validity using exploratory factor analysis with principal axis factor extraction and confirmatory factor analysis with diagonally weighted least squares. Consumer willingness is positively correlated with economic (8 items), operational (3 items), and social (3 items) factors, with a statistical significance of p < 0.001. Of all the factors, the strongest correlation, 0.67 (95% CI = 0.57, 0.75; p < 0.001; N = 155), exists between economic factors and consumer willingness. The results of a multinomial logistic regression analysis suggest that all consumers are highly unlikely to participate in economic factors, while they are highly likely to positively commit to operational and social factors. Therefore, it is recommended that the government provides monetary incentives to CEP companies to adopt green logistics, such as tax reductions and subsidies, to reduce the costs of green logistics. Meanwhile, the CEP industry could provide some direct and indirect incentives to consumers to re-use, recycle, and share materials, and to spend time learning about express enterprises' green logistics, to increase consumer participation in economic factors.

Experimental Research on the Disruptive Evaporation and the Motion Characteristics of Secondary Droplets for Emulsified Biodiesel with a Suspended Droplet Configuration

The secondary atomization of droplets is one of the means to improve the efficiency of diesel fuel injection atomization. As a promising biomass fuel, emulsified biodiesel showed a good prospect in improving the atomization effect of diesel engines. In this study, a high-temperature and pressure-resistant evaporator was designed to simulate diesel-like conditions, and the evaporation and combustion experiments of emulsified biodiesel droplets were carried out. The morphological changes in the droplets were dynamically captured using a high-speed camera. According to the collected images, the evaporation characteristic parameters, the dynamic parameters of droplet motion, and the correlation between the original and secondary droplets were quantitatively analyzed. The gain effect of secondary atomization for droplets on the diesel engine spray was evaluated. The results showed that the emulsified biodiesel underwent nucleation, agglomeration, puffing, and explosion during the evaporation process, while the classic d ² law only meets a few cases of this fuel. The effect of high temperature was reflected in reducing the normalization time of droplet agglomeration and explosion, while the higher pressure inhibited the expansion of the droplets, thus slowing down the expansion rate and restricting the droplet volume. Driven by the water content, the time of droplet explosion was closer to the droplet lifetime. The evaporation process of the secondary droplet was similar to that of the original droplet over a reduced scale of 1-2 orders of magnitude. (D_d /D _d ⁰)² ≈ 1 was a necessary condition for the secondary droplets to be produced in large quantities. The average equivalent diameter of the droplets was distributed in the range of 80-140 μm, and the secondary atomization caused expansion of the spray range by 20-40%. Expansion of the range of secondary droplets was beneficial to shortening the ignition delay and increasing the combustion rate.

Effects of multi-phase inoculation on the fungal community related with the improvement of medicinal herbal residues composting

Composting has become the most important way to recycle medicinal herbal residues (MHRs). The traditional composting method, adding a microbial agent at one time, has been greatly limited due to its low composting efficiency, mutual influence of microbial agents, and unstable compost products. This study was conducted to assess the effect of multi-phase inoculation on the lignocellulose degradation, enzyme activities, and fungal community during MHRs composting. The results showed that multi-phase inoculation treatment had the highest thermophilic temperature (68.2 °C) and germination index (102.68%), significantly improved available phosphorus content, humic acid, and humic substances concentration, accelerated the degradation of cellulose and lignin, and increased the activities of cellulase in the mature phase, xylanase, manganese peroxidase, and utilization of phenolic compounds. Furthermore, the non-metric multi-dimensional scaling showed that the composting process and inoculation significantly influenced fungal community composition. In multi-phase inoculation treatment, Thermomyces in mesophilic, thermophilic, and mature phase, unclassified_Sordariales, and Coprinopsis in mature phase were the dominant genus that might be the main functional groups to degrade lignocellulose and improve the MHRs composting process.

Effects of an additive (hydroxyapatite-bentonite-biochar) on Cd and Pb stabilization and microbial community composition in contaminated vegetable soil

A two-year pot experiment was conducted with a pimiento-celery cabbage (Capsicum annuum L.-Brassica pekinensis) rotation in acidic soil contaminated with Cd and Pb, which was amended with 0.0, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0% (w/w) premixtures of hydroxyapatite, bentonite and biochar combinations (HTB, in a ratio of 1 : 2 : 2). The results showed that the application of HTB at 2.5-10.0% significantly increased soil pH and organic carbon by an average of 10.38-17.60% and 35.60-55.34% during the two years, respectively. Compared to the control treatment, 1.0-10.0% HTB decreased the available Cd and Pb concentrations by 40.92-77.53% and 41.60-82.79% on average, respectively. In addition, the diversity and richness of the soil bacterial community improved after the two-year application of HTB. The relative abundances of Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Chloroflexi increased under the HTB treatments, while those of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria decreased. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and regression analysis indicated that soil pH and Cd and Pb availability were important factors shaping the soil bacterial community. The Cd and Pb concentrations in the edible parts of pimiento and celery cabbage decreased as the HTB application rate increased and met the Food Quality Standard in each season when the HTB application rate was 5.0% or higher. Higher rates of HTB (5.0% and 10.0%) not only ensured the quality of vegetables, but also significantly promoted pimiento and celery cabbage growth. Overall, these results indicated that the application of HTB, especially at a rate of 5.0%, could be an effective way to immobilize Cd and Pb, improve soil quality and ensure vegetables produced in acidic contaminated soil are safe for human consumption.

OsIAA18, an Aux/IAA Transcription Factor Gene, Is Involved in Salt and Drought Tolerance in Rice

Auxin/indoleacetic acid (Aux/IAA) proteins play an important regulatory role in the developmental process of plants and their responses to stresses. A previous study has shown that constitutive expression of OsIAA18, an Aux/IAA transcription factor gene of rice improved salt and osmotic tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis plants. However, little work is known about the regulatory functions of the OsIAA18 gene in regulating the abiotic stress tolerance of rice. In this study, the OsIAA18 gene was introduced into the rice cultivar, Zhonghua 11 and the OsIAA18 overexpression in rice plants exhibited significantly enhanced salt and drought tolerance compared to the wild type (WT). Moreover, overexpression of OsIAA18 in rice increased endogenous levels of abscisic acid (ABA) and the overexpression of OsIAA18 in rice plants showed hypersensitivity to exogenous ABA treatment at both the germination and postgermination stages compared to WT. Overexpression of OsIAA18 upregulated the genes involved in ABA biosynthesis and signaling pathways, proline biosynthesis pathway, and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging system in the overexpression of OsIAA18 in rice plants under salt and drought stresses. Proline content, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD) activities were significantly increased, whereas malonaldehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), and superoxide anion radical (O₂ ^-) content were significantly decreased in the transgenic plants under salt and drought stresses. Taken together, we suggest that OsIAA18 plays a positive role in drought and salt tolerance by regulating stress-induced ABA signaling. The OsIAA18 gene has a potential application in genetically modified crops with enhanced tolerance to abiotic stresses.
