Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung cancer is a highly prevalent tumor with a lack of biological markers that reflect its progression. Mast cell surface membrane protein 1 (MCEMP1, also known as C19ORF59) has not been reported in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate the role of MCEMP1 in LUAD. METHODS MCEMP1 expression in LUAD was analyzed using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data, and conducted univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses to evaluate the prognostic significance of MCEMP1 expression in TCGA. Tumor Immune Estimation Resource (TIMER) was used for examining the correlation between MCEMP1 expression and immune cell infiltration in LUAD. Furthermore, proliferation, migration, invasion, and colony-forming ability were investigated using LUAD cell lines. RESULTS MCEMP1 had low expression in LUAD patient tissues and was correlated with lymph node metastasis, differentiation level, and tumor status. The Area under Curve (AUC) value of MCEMP1 for the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was 0.984. The immune infiltration analysis revealed a correlation between MCEMP1 expression and the extent of macrophages and neutrophil infiltration in LUAD. Additionally, MCEMP1 has low expression in clinical samples, MCEMP1 overexpressed in LUAD cells substantially reduced cell growth, migration, and invasion of malignant cells. CONCLUSION Low expression MCEMP1 promotes LUAD progression, which provides new insights and a potential biological target for future LUAD therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recently, machine learning algorithms have identified preprocedural γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT) as a significant predictor of long-term mortality after coronary revascularization in the SYNTAX (Synergy Between PCI [Percutaneous Coronary Intervention] With Taxus and Cardiac Surgery) trial. The aim of the present study is to investigate the impact of preprocedural GGT on 10-year all-cause mortality in patients with complex coronary artery disease after revascularization. METHODS AND RESULTS The SYNTAX trial was a randomized trial comparing PCI with coronary artery bypass grafting in 1800 patients with complex coronary artery disease. The present report is a post hoc subanalysis of the SYNTAXES (Synergy Between PCI With Taxus and Cardiac Surgery Extended Survival) trial, an investigator-driven extended 10-year follow-up of the SYNTAX trial. The association between preprocedural GGT and 10-year all-cause mortality was investigated. The mean values of GGT for men and women were 43.5 (SD, 48.5) and 36.4 (SD, 46.1) U/L, respectively. In multivariable Cox regression models adjusted by traditional risk factors, GGT was an independent predictor for all-cause death at 10-year follow-up, and each SD increase in log-GGT was associated with a 1.24-fold risk of all cause death at 10-year follow-up (95% CI, 1.10-1.40). According to previously reported sex-related GGT thresholds, patients with higher GGT level had a 1.74-fold risk of all-cause death at 10-year follow-up (95% CI, 1.32-2.29) compared with patients with lower GGT level. CONCLUSIONS Preprocedural GGT is an independent predictor of 10-year mortality after coronary revascularization in patients with complex coronary artery disease. In patients with elevated GGT, strong secondary prevention may be required after revascularization and must be studied prospectively. REGISTRATION URL: https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT03417050.

Abstract
The prediction of outcomes following cardiac arrest continues to provide significant difficulties. A preferred strategy involves adopting a multimodal approach, which encompasses the careful evaluation of the biomarker neuron-specific enolase (NSE). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to gather and summarize new and existing evidence on the prediction effect of neuron-specific enolase for survival to hospital discharge among adult patients with cardiac arrest. We searched PubMed Central, Scopus, EMBASE databases, and the Cochrane Library without language restrictions from their inceptions until 30 October 2023 and checked the reference lists of the included studies. Pooled results were reported as standardized mean differences (SMDs) and were presented with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The primary outcome was survival to hospital discharge (SHD). Eighty-six articles with 10,845 participants were included. NSE showed a notable degree of specificity in its ability to predict mortality as well as neurological status among individuals who experienced cardiac arrest (p < 0.05). This study demonstrates the ability to predict fatality rates and neurological outcomes, both during the time of admission and at various time intervals after cardiac arrest. The use of NSE in a multimodal neuroprognostication algorithm has promise in improving the accuracy of prognoses for persons who have undergone cardiac arrest.

Abstract
Objective Reduced hemispheric asymmetry has been identified as a potential risk factor for schizophrenia, characterized by diminished brain lateralization and a lack of dominance in the left hemisphere. Moreover, there is growing evidence of disrupted connectivity between various cortical regions. This study aimed to investigate gender differences in left-footedness as a potential biological marker for neuronal dysontogenesis in individuals with schizophrenia and control subjects. Materials and methods A New Combined Foot Dominance Scale (14 foot tests), comprising a Modified Chapman & Chapman Subscale (10 foot tests) and a Complex Tasks Subscale (four foot tests) was administered as performance tasks in 180 subjects [98 schizophrenia patients with mean age 34.45 years (SD = 15.67, range 23-79) for men and 42.20 years (SD = 11.38, range 21-63) for women and 82 controls with a mean age 34.70 years (SD = 16,82, range 18-79) for men and 44.50 years (SD = 10.73, range 23-67)]. As our data are not continuous and lacks normal distribution, the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test was used for comparing categorical data. Results The mean left-footedness, as assessed by the New Combined Foot Dominance Scale, is significantly higher in individuals with schizophrenia compared to control subjects. Our findings from inter-gender comparisons reveal that female schizophrenia patients exhibit a significantly greater average left-footedness than female control subjects, while in males no such a statistical significant difference is detected. Conclusion Left foot dominance is higher in patients with schizophrenia than in control subjects and women contribute significantly more to this difference.

Abstract
HOXC cluster antisense RNA 3 (HOXC-AS3) is a novel long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that exhibits aberrant expression patterns in various cancer types. Its expression is closely related to clinicopathological features, demonstrating significant clinical relevance across multiple tumors. And HOXC-AS3 plays multifaceted roles in tumor progression, impacting cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, invasion, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), autophagy, senescence, tumor growth, and metastasis. In this review, we summarized and comprehensively analyzed the expression and clinical significance of HOXC-AS3 as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for malignancies. Additionally, we presented an in-depth update on HOXC-AS3's functions and regulatory mechanisms in cancer pathogenesis. This narrative review underscores the importance of HOXC-AS3 as a promising lncRNA candidate in cancer research and its potential as a predictive biomarker and therapeutic target in clinical applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We sought to determine the prognostic value of the newly developed Global Immune-Nutrition-Inflammation Index (GINI) in patients with stage IIIC non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who underwent definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). METHODS This study was conducted on a cohort of 802 newly diagnosed stage IIIC NSCLC patients who underwent CCRT. The novel GINI created first here was defined as follows: GINI = [C-reactive protein × Platelets × Monocytes × Neutrophils] ÷ [Albumin × Lymphocytes]. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to determine the optimal pre-CCRT GINI cut-off value that substantially interacts with the locoregional progression-free (LRPFS), progression-free (PFS), and overall survival (OS). RESULTS The optimal pre-CCRT GINI cutoff was 1562 (AUC: 76.1%; sensitivity: 72.4%; specificity: 68.2%; Youden index: 0.406). Patients presenting with a GINI ≥ 1562 had substantially shorter median LRPFS (13.3 vs. 18.4 months; p < 0.001), PFS (10.2 vs. 14.3 months; p < 0.001), and OS (19.1 vs. 37.8 months; p < 0.001) durations than those with a GINI < 1562. Results of the multivariate analysis revealed that the pre-CCRT GINI ≥ 1562 (vs. <1562), T4 tumor (vs. T3), and receiving only 1 cycle of concurrent chemotherapy (vs. 2-3 cycles) were the factors independently associated with poorer LRPS (p < 0.05 for each), PFS (p < 0.05 for each), and OS (p < 0.05 for each). CONCLUSION The newly developed GINI index efficiently divided the stage IIIC NSCLSC patients into two subgroups with substantially different median and long-term survival outcomes.

Abstract
Treatment of bipolar disorder is prone to prolongation despite various treatments, including medication. The efficacy of exercise treatment (i.e., interventions involving physical exercise and sports intervention) for major depressive disorders has been reported for depressive symptoms, cognitive function, and sleep disturbances. However, its efficacy for bipolar disorder has yet to be established. We designed a randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial that includes 100 patients with bipolar disorder aged 20-65 years. This will be a cluster-randomized, two-group trial that will be conducted in ten psychiatric hospitals. The hospitals will be randomly assigned to an exercise intervention + treatment as usual (exercise) group or a placebo exercise intervention (stretching) + treatment as usual (control) group. Patients will be assessed using an extensive battery of clinical tests, physical parameters, sleep status, biological parameters (cytokines, neurotrophic factors), and genetic parameters (DNA and RNA) at baseline after a 6-week intervention period, at 10-week follow-up, and at 6-month follow-up. This innovative study may provide important evidence for the effectiveness of exercise in the treatment of bipolar depression based on clinical, biological, genetic, and physiological markers.

Abstract
Combination of bovine serum albumin with microemulsions as constituting ingredient biopolymer has long been regarded an innovative method to address the surface functionalization and stability issues in the targeted payload deliveries, thereupon producing effectively modified microemulsions, which are superior in loading capacity, transitional and shelf-stability, as well as site-directed/site-preferred delivery, has become a favored option. The current study aimed to develop an efficient, suitable and functional microemulsion system encapsulating sesame oil (SO) as a model payload towards developing an efficient delivery platform. UV-VIS, FT-IR, and FE-SEM were used to characterize, and analyze the developed carrier. Physicochemical properties assessments of the microemulsion by dynamic light scattering size distributions, zeta-potential, and electron micrographic analyses were performed. The mechanical properties for rheological behavior were also studied. The HFF-2 cell line and hemolysis assays were conducted to ascertain the cell viability, and in vitro biocompatibility. The in vivo toxicity was determined based on a predicted median lethal dose (LD50) model, wherein the liver enzymes' functions were also tested to assess and confirm the predicted toxicity.

Abstract
Antiseizure medication (ASM) is the primary treatment for epilepsy. In clinical practice, methods to assess ASM efficacy (predict seizure freedom or seizure reduction), during any phase of the drug treatment lifecycle, are limited. This scoping review identifies and appraises prognostic electroencephalographic (EEG) biomarkers and prognostic models that use EEG features, which are associated with seizure outcomes following ASM initiation, dose adjustment, or withdrawal. We also aim to summarize the population and context in which these biomarkers and models were identified and described, to understand how they could be used in clinical practice. Between January 2021 and October 2022, four databases, references, and citations were systematically searched for ASM studies investigating changes to interictal EEG or prognostic models using EEG features and seizure outcomes. Study bias was appraised using modified Quality in Prognosis Studies criteria. Results were synthesized into a qualitative review. Of 875 studies identified, 93 were included. Biomarkers identified were classed as qualitative (visually identified by wave morphology) or quantitative. Qualitative biomarkers include identifying hypsarrhythmia, centrotemporal spikes, interictal epileptiform discharges (IED), classifying the EEG as normal/abnormal/epileptiform, and photoparoxysmal response. Quantitative biomarkers were statistics applied to IED, high-frequency activity, frequency band power, current source density estimates, pairwise statistical interdependence between EEG channels, and measures of complexity. Prognostic models using EEG features were Cox proportional hazards models and machine learning models. There is promise that some quantitative EEG biomarkers could be used to assess ASM efficacy, but further research is required. There is insufficient evidence to conclude any specific biomarker can be used for a particular population or context to prognosticate ASM efficacy. We identified a potential battery of prognostic EEG biomarkers, which could be combined with prognostic models to assess ASM efficacy. However, many confounders need to be addressed for translation into clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary and nutritional biomarkers are objective dietary assessment tools that will enable a more accurate and precise determination of diet-disease relations. However, the lack of established biomarker panels for dietary patterns is concerning, as dietary patterns continue to be the focus of dietary guidelines. OBJECTIVES We aimed to develop and validate a panel of objective biomarkers that reflects the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) by applying machine learning approaches to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. METHODS Cross-sectional population-based data (eligible criteria: age ≥20 y, not pregnant, no reported supplement use of dedicated vitamin A, D, E, or fish oils; n = 3481) from the 2003 to 2004 cycle of the NHANES were used to develop 2 multibiomarker panels of the HEI, 1 with (primary panel) and 1 without (secondary panel) plasma FAs. Up to 46 blood-based dietary and nutritional biomarkers (24 FAs, 11 carotenoids, and 11 vitamins) were included for variable selection using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator controlling for age, sex, ethnicity, and education. The explanatory impact of selected biomarker panels was assessed by comparing the regression models with and without the selected biomarkers. In addition, 5 comparative machine learning models were constructed to validate the biomarker selection. RESULTS The primary multibiomarker panel (8 FAs, 5 carotenoids, and 5 vitamins) significantly improved the explained variability of the HEI (adjusted R2 increased from 0.056 to 0.245). The secondary multibiomarker panel (8 vitamins and 10 carotenoids) had lesser predictive capabilities (adjusted R2 increased from 0.048 to 0.189). CONCLUSIONS Two multibiomarker panels were developed and validated to reflect a healthy dietary pattern consistent with the HEI. Future research should seek to test these multibiomarker panels in randomly assigned trials and identify whether they have broad application in healthy dietary pattern assessment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND TNF-dependent synaptotoxicity contributes to the neuronal damage occurring in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS) and its mouse model Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE). Here, we investigated miR-142-3p, a synaptotoxic microRNA induced by inflammation in EAE and MS, as a potential downstream effector of TNF signalling. METHODS Electrophysiological recordings, supported by molecular, biochemical and histochemical analyses, were performed to explore TNF-synaptotoxicity in the striatum of EAE and healthy mice. MiR-142 heterozygous (miR-142 HE) mice and/or LNA-anti miR-142-3p strategy were used to verify the TNF-miR-142-3p axis hypothesis. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 151 pwMS was analysed to evaluate possible correlation between TNF and miR-142-3p levels and their impact on clinical parameters (e.g. progression index (PI), age-related clinical severity (gARMSS)) and MRI measurements at diagnosis (T0). RESULTS High levels of TNF and miR-142-3p were detected in both EAE striatum and MS-CSF. The TNF-dependent glutamatergic alterations were prevented in the inflamed striatum of EAE miR-142 HE mice. Accordingly, TNF was ineffective in healthy striatal slices incubated with LNA-anti miR- 142-3p. However, both preclinical and clinical data did not validate the TNF-miR-142-3p axis hypothesis, suggesting a permissive neuronal role of miR-142-3p on TNF-signalling. Clinical data showed a negative impact of each molecule on disease course and/or brain lesions and unveiled that their high levels exert a detrimental synergistic effect on disease activity, PI and white matter lesion volume. CONCLUSION We propose miR-142-3p as a critical modulator of TNF-mediated neuronal toxicity and suggest a detrimental synergistic action of these molecules on MS pathology.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The E3 ubiquitin ligase FBXW11 exerts an oncogenic or tumor suppressive function in a cellular context-dependent manner. However, the clinical significance and biological role of FBXW11 in chondrosarcoma have not been clearly characterized. This study focuses on the expression profile, prognostic value and biological function of FBXW11 in chondrosarcoma. METHODS FBXW11 expression was analyzed by qRT-PCR and Western blot in six cases of chondrosarcoma specimens and the matched adjacent non-tumor tissues. The expression profile and prognostic value of FBXW11 were investigated in sixty-three cases of chondrosarcoma patients. Cell viability, colony formation, migration, invasion and apoptosis assays were further detected in SW1353 chondrosarcoma cells with restored FBXW11 expression. RESULTS Downregulation of FBXW11 was remarkably detected in human chondrosarcoma specimens compared with the corresponding non-tumor tissues and benign cartilage tumors. Downregulated FBXW11 expression significantly correlated with high-grade chondrosarcoma and poor prognosis. Furthermore, FBXW11 was identified as an independent prognostic factor for the overall survival of chondrosarcoma patients. Restored expression of FBXW11 significantly suppressed chondrosarcoma cell growth and induced apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS These findings establish that FBXW11 was markedly downregulated and recognized as an independent prognostic factor for patients with chondrosarcoma, and restored FBXW11 expression can suppress chondrosarcoma growth and induce apoptosis, highlighting a novel biological marker and potential therapeutic target against chondrosarcoma.

Abstract
A combination of healthy lifestyle behaviours (i.e. regular physical activity, nutritious diet, no smoking, moderate alcohol, and healthy body mass) has been consistently associated with beneficial health outcomes including reduced risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Metabolomic profiles, characterized by distinct sets of biomarkers, have been described for healthy lifestyle behaviours individually and in combination. However, recent literature calls for systematic evaluation of these heterogenous data to identify potential clinical biomarkers relating to a combined healthy lifestyle. The objective was to systematically review existing literature on the metabolomic profile of combined healthy lifestyle behaviours. MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane databases were searched through March 2022. Studies in humans outlining the metabolomic profile of a combination of two or more healthy lifestyle behaviours were included. Collectively, the metabolomic profile following regular adherence to combined healthy lifestyle behaviours points to a positive association with beneficial fatty acids and phosphocreatine, and inverse associations with triglycerides, trimethylamine N-oxide, and acylcarnitines. The findings suggest that a unique metabolomic profile is associated with combined healthy lifestyle behaviours. Additional research is warranted to further describe this metabolomic profile using targeted and untargeted metabolomic approaches along with uniform definitions of combined healthy lifestyle variables across populations. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Radiotherapy (RT) against head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) may lead to severe toxicity in 30-40% of patients. The normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models, based on dosimetric data refined the normal tissue dose/volume tolerance guidelines. In parallel, the radiation-induced nucleoshuttling (RIANS) of the Ataxia-Telangiectasia Mutated protein (pATM) is a predictive approach of individual intrinsic radiosensitivity. Here, we combined NTCP with RADIODTECT©, a blood assay derived from the RIANS model, to predict RT toxicity in HNSCC patients. METHODS RADIODTECT© cutoff values (i.e. 57.8 ng/mL for grade⩾2 toxicity and 46 ng/mL for grade⩾3 toxicity) have been previously assessed. Validation was performed on a prospective cohort of 36 HNSCC patients treated with postoperative RT. Toxicity was graded with the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) scale and two criteria were considered: grade⩾2 oral mucositis (OM2), grade⩾3 mucositis (OM3) and grade⩾2 dysphagia (DY2), grade⩾3 dysphagia (DY3). pATM quantification was assessed in lymphocytes of HNSCC patients. The discrimination power of the pATM assay was evaluated through the Area Under the Receiver Operator Characteristics Curve (AUC-ROC). Two previously described NTCP models were considered, including the dose to the oral cavity and the mean dose to the parotid glands (OM2 and OM3) and the dose to the oral cavity, to the larynx and the volume of pharyngeal constrictor muscles (DY2 and DY3). RESULTS Combining NTCP models with RADIODTECT© blood test improved the AUC-ROC. Considering the prediction of mucositis, AUC-ROCNTCP+RADIODTECT©=0.80 was for OM2, and AUC-ROCNTCP+RADIODTECT©=0.78 for OM3. Considering the prediction of acute dysphagia, AUC-ROCNTCP+RADIODTECT©=0.71 for DY2 and for DY3. CONCLUSIONS Combining NTCP models with a radiosensitivity biomarker might significantly improve the prediction of toxicities for HNSCC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-stroke anxiety (PSA) is a common neuropsychiatric affective disorder occurring after a stroke. Animal experiments have indicated that serum S-100β levels are closely related to anxiety disorder. No clinical study has been done to explore the relationship between serum S-100β levels and anxiety symptoms in patients with acute stroke. The aim of our study was to investigate the association between serum S-100β levels and PSA. METHODS One hundred twenty-six acute stroke patients were recruited and followed up for 1 month. Blood samples were collected within 24 h after admission. The levels of serum S-100β were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Patients with significant clinical symptoms of anxiety and a Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale score >7 at 1 month after stroke were diagnosed as PSA. RESULTS Serum S-100β levels in the non-PSA group were lower than the PSA group (838.97 (678.20-993.59) ng/L vs. 961.87 (796.09-1479.59) ng/L, Z = -2.661, P = 0.008). In multivariate analyses, we found that decreased risk of PSA was associated with low tertile serum S-100β levels (≤753.8 ng/L, OR 0.062, 95% CI 0.008-0.475, P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS Low serum S-100β levels at admission may be associated with the decreased risk of PSA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND FER-1 family member 4 (FER1L4), a 6.7 kb lncRNA located at 20q11.22, plays an important biological function in a variety of tumor diseases. The purpose of this review is to clarify the pathophysiological mechanism and potential biological function of FER1L4 in different tumors. METHODS By searching the relevant literature of PubMed, the specific pathophysiological mechanism of FER1L4 in different tumors was summarized. RESULTS LncRNA FER1L4 is one of the key factors in tumorigenesis and is abnormally down-regulated in many tumors, including osteosarcoma, lung cancer, laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, laryngeal cancer, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, endometrial cancer, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and so on. However, FER1L4 is downregulated in breast cancer, glioma, oral squamous cell carcinoma, renal clear cell carcinoma and periodontitis, and plays a protective role in orthodontic teeth. In addition, as a tumor suppressor gene or oncogene, FER1L4 affects tumor proliferation, invasion, migration and apoptosis. Conclusion:LncRNA FER1L4 has a good application prospect in the treatment and diagnosis of many kinds of tumors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that schizophrenia is associated with mitochondrial and immune abnormalities. In this pilot case-control study, we investigated the level of mitochondrial impairment in lymphocytes in patients with acute relapse of schizophrenia and explored the correlation between the level of mitochondrial damage and symptoms or treatment response. METHODS Lymphocytic mitochondrial damage was detected using mitochondrial fluorescence staining and flow cytometry in 37 patients (at admission and discharge) and 24 controls. Clinical symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI-S). RESULTS The levels of mitochondrial damage in CD3+ T, CD4+ T, and CD8+ T lymphocytes of the patients with schizophrenia at admission were significantly higher than those of the controls (p<0.05) and did not return to normal at discharge (p>0.05). The mitochondrial damage of T cells significantly improved at discharge for responsive patients only, as compared with that at admission (P<0.05). However, no significant difference was found in mitochondrial damage in CD19+ B cells between patients and healthy controls, or between admission and discharge (p>0.05). Furthermore, the reduction in mitochondrial damage of CD3, CD4, and CD8 lymphocytes was positively correlated with the reduction of the score of the PANSS positive scale at discharge (p<0.05), while no significant correlation was found between the level of mitochondrial damage in lymphocytes and the scores of PANSS and CGI-S. CONCLUSION Acute relapse of schizophrenia might be associated with higher levels of mitochondrial damage in peripheral blood T lymphocytes. The degree of recovery of mitochondrial impairment in the T cells may be used as a predictor of treatment response in schizophrenia. As this is a pilot study, the conclusion still needs further verification in large-scale studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Eye movement is critical for obtaining precise visual information and providing sensorimotor processes and advanced cognitive functions to the brain behavioral indicator. METHODS In this article, we present a narrative review of the eye-movement paradigms (such as fixation, smooth pursuit eye movements, and memory-guided saccade tasks) in major depression. RESULTS Characteristics of eye movement are considered to reflect several aspects of cognitive deficits regarded as an aid to diagnosis. Findings regarding depressive disorders showed differences from the healthy population in paradigms, the characteristics of eye movement may reflect cognitive deficits in depression. Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of different eye movement paradigms for MDD screening. CONCLUSION Depression can be distinguished from other mental illnesses based on eye movements. Eye movement reflects cognitive deficits that can help diagnose depression, and it can make the entire diagnostic process more accurate.

Abstract
Objective: Multiple studies have compared various optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) parameters in participants with systemic hypertension vs. controls and have presented discordant findings. We conducted a meta-analysis to pool together data from different studies to generate an overall effect size and find out whether OCTA parameter(s) significantly differed in participants with systemic hypertension as compared to controls. Methods: We conducted a literature search through a search of electronic databases to identify studies before 19 June 2021, which compared OCTA parameters in non-diabetic participants with systemic hypertension vs. controls. If the OCTA parameter had a minimum number of 3 studies that analyzed it, the mean difference between participants with systemic hypertension and controls were analyzed using a random-effects model. Results: We identified 11 eligible studies. At the macula, 9 studies analyzed vessel density at the superficial capillary plexus (SVD), 7 analyzed vessel density at the deep capillary plexus (DVD), and 6 analyzed the area of the superficial foveal avascular zone (FAZ). Participants with systemic hypertension had significantly lower SVD (standardized mean difference [SMD], -0.50 [-0.70, -0.30], P < 0.00001, I 2 = 63%), lower DVD (SMD, -0.38 [-0.64, -0.13], P = 0.004, I 2 = 67%) and larger superficial FAZ (SMD, 0.32 [0.04, 0.61], P = 0.020, I 2 = 77%). Conclusion: The eyes of people with systemic hypertension have robustly lower superficial and deep vascular densities at the macula when compared to control eyes. Our results suggest that OCTA can provide information about pre-clinical microvascular changes from systemic hypertension.

Abstract
Oxytocin (OT) circuitry plays a major role in the mediation of prosocial behavior. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication and have been suggested to display deficiencies in central OT mechanisms. The current preregistered meta-analysis evaluated potential group differences in endogenous OT levels between individuals with ASD and neurotypical (NT) controls. We included 18 studies comprising a total of 1422 participants. We found that endogenous OT levels are lower in children with ASD as compared to NT controls (n = 1123; g = -0.60; p = 0.006), but this effect seems to disappear in adolescent (n = 152; g = -0.20; p = 0.53) and adult populations (n = 147; g = 0.27; p = 0.45). Secondly, while no significant subgroup differences were found in regard to sex, the group difference in OT levels of individuals with versus without ASD seems to be only present in the studies with male participants (n = 814; g = -0.44; p = 0.08) and not female participants (n = 192; g = 0.11; p = 0.47). More research that employs more homogeneous methods is necessary to investigate potential developmental changes in endogenous OT levels, both in typical and atypical development, and to explore the possible use of OT level measurement as a diagnostic marker of ASD.

Abstract
Objective Tumor metabolism has always been the focus of cancer research. SLC16A1, as a key factor in catalysis of monocarboxylate transport across the plasma membrane, has been found to be associated with the occurrence and metastasis of a variety of cancers, but its prognostic significance and mechanism in different tumors are still unclear. Methods Based on the gene expression matrix and clinical information of human cancer tissues acquired from TCGA and GTEX databases, the differential expression of SLC16A1 in different tumors and normal tissues was analyzed. To confirm the association between its expression, the mutation of MMRS gene, and the expression level of DNMTs. Univariate Cox regression was applied to analyze the association between SLC16A1 expression and patient prognosis. The effect of SLC16A1 expression on patient survival was examined by Kaplan Meier analysis. GSEA was used to identify related signaling pathways. Results The expression of SLC16A1 was differentially expressed in most tumors, especially in the urinary tract where it is commonly highly expressed, and differential expression of SLC16A1 in different clinical stages. SLC16A1 expression was significantly positively correlated with MMRS gene mutation and DNMTS expression. Moreover, high SLC16A1 expression was associated with poorer overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in urological cancers. In particular, the results of the enrichment analysis showed that SLC16A1 was associated with processes such as cell adhesion and many signaling pathways affecting cell cycle were significantly enriched in the group with high-expressed SLC16A1. Conclusion SLC16A1 expression was upregulated in urological cancer. SLC16A1 may promote tumor development by regulating the epigenetic process of urological cancer and demonstrated a great potential as a prognostic biomarker of urological cancer patients.

Abstract
Aim We recently proposed miR‐142‐3p as a molecular player in inflammatory synaptopathy, a new pathogenic hallmark of multiple sclerosis (MS) and of its mouse model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), that leads to neuronal loss independently of demyelination. MiR‐142‐3p seems to be unique among potential biomarker candidates in MS, since it is an inflammatory miRNA playing a dual role in the immune and central nervous systems. Here, we aimed to verify the impact of miR‐142‐3p circulating in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of MS patients on clinical parameters, neuronal excitability and its potential interaction with disease modifying therapies (DMTs). Methods and Results In a cohort of 151 MS patients, we found positive correlations between CSF miR‐142‐3p levels and clinical progression, IL‐1β signalling as well as synaptic excitability measured by transcranial magnetic stimulation. Furthermore, therapy response of patients with ‘low miR‐142‐3p’ to dimethyl fumarate (DMF), an established disease‐modifying treatment (DMT), was superior to that of patients with ‘high miR‐142‐3p’ levels. Accordingly, the EAE clinical course of heterozygous miR‐142 mice was ameliorated by peripheral DMF treatment with a greater impact relative to their wild type littermates. In addition, a central protective effect of this drug was observed following intracerebroventricular and ex vivo acute treatments of EAE wild type mice, showing a rescue of miR‐142‐3p‐dependent glutamatergic alterations. By means of electrophysiology, molecular and biochemical analysis, we suggest miR‐142‐3p as a molecular target of DMF. Conclusion MiR‐142‐3p is a novel and potential negative prognostic CSF marker of MS and a promising tool for identifying personalised therapies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Our study evaluates if the use of biological markers can predict the infertility in women with non-obstructive endometriosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Two prospective, non-randomised studies were conducted to identify if CA-125, IL-6 and IL-8 can be used as predictive markers for infertility in women with non-obstructive endometriosis. Peripheral levels of CA-125, IL-6 and IL-8 were measured before laparoscopy in all patients. RESULTS We found a total number of 152 patients with non-obstructive endometriosis, we divided them in two groups: fertile and infertile women. There was a statistically significant difference of the mean of CA-125 values between the two groups (p = 0.00). The patients with infertility had a significantly higher IL-6 serum values than the fertile patients (p = 0.00). Regarding the IL-8 serum values, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups fertile vs infertile, (p = 0.06). CONCLUSIONS The elevated serum levels of CA-125 and IL-6 was associated with an increased probability of being diagnosed with infertility. The IL-8 had no value in predicting infertility associated with non-obstructive endometriosis.

Abstract
Radiation therapy (RT), either alone or in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy is a keystone of cancers treatment. Early toxicity is common, sometimes leading to discontinuation of treatment. Recent studies stressed the role of the phosphorylated ATM (pATM) protein in RT-toxicity genesis and its ability in predicting individual radiosensitivity (IRS) in fibroblasts. Here we assessed the reliability of the pATM quantification in lymphocytes to predict IRS. A first retrospective study was performed on 150 blood lymphocytes of patients with several cancer types. Patients were divided into 2 groups, according to the grade of experienced toxicity. The global quantity of pATM molecules was assessed by ELISA on lymphocytes to determine the best threshold value. Then, the binary assay was assessed on a validation cohort of 36 patients with head and neck cancers. The quantity of pATM molecules in each sample of the training cohort was found in agreement with the observed Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) grades with an AUC = 0.71 alone and of 0.77 combined to chemotherapy information. In the validation cohort, the same test was conducted with the following performances: sensitivity = 0.84, specificity = 0.54, AUC = 0.70 and 0.72 combined to chemotherapy. This study provides the basis of an easy to perform assay for clinical use.

Abstract
Objective Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a common life-threatening cardiovascular
disease. This retrospective study was conducted to analyze the plasma
concentration of S100A1 and its diagnostic value for AAD through receiver
operating characteristic (ROC) curve and logistic regression analyses. Methods Seventy-eight patients with AAD and 77 healthy controls were included, and
the relevant clinical data for each group were collected. According to the
Stanford classification, the AAD patients were divided into types A and B.
The plasma levels of S100A1, D-dimer, hypersensitive C-reactive protein, and
cardiac troponin T were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Results The S100A1 concentrations in the healthy control, Stanford A, and Stanford B
groups were 0.7 ± 0.6, 4.9 ± 2.6, and 3.5 ± 2.2 ng/mL, respectively. The
concentration of S100A1 was increased in patients with AAD complicated with
aortic regurgitation, pericardial effusion, or in-hospital death. ROC curve
analysis showed that the area under the curve was 0.89. Logistic regression
analysis revealed that the S100A1 level was an important risk factor for the
development of AAD. Conclusion Plasma S100A1 is significantly elevated in patients with AAD, and its
concentration has potential clinical value for diagnosing AAD.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is known as the fifth most common cancer in the world for its poor prognosis. New diagnostic markers and treatments are urgent to discover. To evaluate the protein expression of Tropomyosin4 (TPM4) and investigate its prognostic value in HCC, we collected 110 patients with different degrees of HCC and 10 patients with normal hepatic tissues and performed immunohistochemistry. Western bot was used to evaluate the expression of TPM4 in three HCC cell lines (HepG2, Huh7, SMMC-7721) and normal liver cell line LO2, as well as 7 HCC tissues and 7 normal hepatic tissues. The results of TPM4 staining revealed that TPM4 expression in HCC was higher than that in normal hepatic tissues, which was positive in 51.8% (n=57) and negative in 48.2% (n=53) while in normal hepatic tissues positive staining was in 10% (n=1) and negative staining was in 90% (n=9) (P=0.011). And the expression of TPM4 was related to pT status, grade and stage (P<0.001, P=0.015 and P<0.001, respectively). Western blot results indicated that TPM4 was high expressed in HCC cell line and HCC tissues. In conclusion, we believe that TPM4 can be applied as a diagnostic and prognostic marker to assist the management of HCC.

Abstract
Simple Summary In dogs affected with chronic kidney disease (CKD), mineral disorders, including renal hyperparathyroidism (RHPT), are frequent. Secondary RHPT is the increase in serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), that can have a significant impact in the disease progression. Despite its clinical utility, the measurement of serum PTH is not routinely executed due to limited availability of validated methods. The aims of this study were: the analytical validation of a new method for PTH measurement in dogs and analysis of the preliminary association of the obtained results with the renal status. Twenty-seven samples obtained from dogs that were healthy or affected with CKD were analysed. PTH was measured using a commercially available human assay. The precision and accuracy of this method were assessed and the PTH stability at different temperatures was evaluated. Clinical validation was performed by comparing PTH values with clinicopathological parameters often altered during CKD, such as creatinine and phosphorus, and with the disease severity. The method showed an optimal precision and accuracy; the stability was compatible with the standard sample processing times. PTH was positively associated with creatinine and phosphorus. The investigated method was successfully validated in dogs, allowing its use for clinical purposes. Abstract Renal hyperparathyroidism (RHPT) is one of the main complications in dogs affected with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The measurement of serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) could be of clinical utility for the disease’s treatment and follow-up; however, PTH is not routinely determined due to limited available methods, often not fully validated in dogs. The aims of this study were the analytical validation of an immunoenzymatic method for the measurement of PTH in canine serum and the analysis of preliminary association of the obtained results with renal function. Twenty-six samples obtained from dogs healthy or affected with CKD were analysed. PTH was measured using a two-site immunoenzymometric human assay (ST AIA-PACK® Intact PTH, Tosoh Bioscience). The analytical validation protocol evaluated the assay precision and accuracy. Also, the PTH’s storage stability at 20 °C, 4 °C and −20 °C was assessed. Clinical validation was performed by comparing PTH values with creatinine, phosphorus and International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) stage. The method showed optimal precision and accuracy, whereas stability was adequate up to 4 h at 20 °C, 24 h at 4 °C and 6 months at −20 °C. PTH was positively associated with creatinine, phosphorus and IRIS stage. The investigated method was thus successfully validated in dogs, allowing its use for clinical purpose.

Ionizing radiation (IR) is a high-energy radiation whose biological effects depend on the irradiation doses. Low-dose radiation (LDR) is delivered during medical diagnoses or by an exposure to radioactive elements and has been linked to the occurrence of chronic diseases, such as leukemia and cardiovascular diseases. Though epidemiological research is indispensable for predicting and dealing with LDR-induced abnormalities in individuals exposed to LDR, little is known about epidemiological markers of LDR exposure. Moreover, difference in the LDR-induced molecular events in each organ has been an obstacle to a thorough investigation of the LDR effects and a validation of the experimental results in in vivo models. In this review, we summarized the recent reports on LDR-induced risk of organ-specifically arranged the alterations for a comprehensive understanding of the biological effects of LDR. We suggested that LDR basically caused the accumulation of DNA damages, controlled systemic immune systems, induced oxidative damages on peripheral organs, and even benefited the viability in some organs. Furthermore, we concluded that understanding of organ-specific responses and the biological markers involved in the responses is needed to investigate the precise biological effects of LDR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that progresses very rapidly and has a poor prognosis. Some studies indicate that the level of inflammatory cytokines may be related to MSA. However, no consistent conclusion has been drawn yet. The purpose of our research is to perform a meta-analysis to investigate whether the level of inflammatory cytokines is altered in MSA. METHODS Case-control studies on inflammatory cytokine levels in MSA will be searched in the following 3 databases: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from the database start time to March 17, 2020. Two independent authors will conduct research selection, data extraction, and quality evaluation. Data synthesis, subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and the meta-analysis will be performed using Stata15.0 software. RESULTS This study will provide a comprehensive review of all studies on inflammatory cytokine levels in MSA. CONCLUSION To the best of our knowledge, this study will be the first meta-analysis that provides the quantitative evidence of inflammatory cytokine levels in MSA. Abstract
Purpose There is an urgent need for new biomarkers for the diagnosis of breast cancer. Exosomes can communicate with cells through transport molecules, including long-chain noncoding RNA (lncRNA), which is considered as a promising noninvasive biomarker. Here, we aimed to determine the potential of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) H19 in the circulating exosomes for the diagnosis of breast cancer (BC). Materials and Methods We measured the levels of lncRNA H19 in serum-derived exosomes from patients with breast cancer (BC) or benign breast disease (BBD) and healthy subjects, using quantitative real-time PCR. H19 levels were also measured for pre-operative and post-operative patients. Receiver operating characteristic curve was constructed, and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated to determine the applicability of exosomal H19 levels as biomarkers in BC. The relationship between H19 relative expression and clinical features of BC patients was also analyzed. Results Exosomal H19 expression levels were upregulated in patients with BC compared to that in patients with BBD and healthy controls (BC vs BBD, P < 0.001; BC vs healthy subjects, P < 0.001). The median serum exosomal H19 levels were significantly lower in post-operative than that in the pre-operative patients (P < 0.001). The AUC for exosomal H19 analysis was 0.870 (95% CI: 0.774–0.966) with a sensitivity of 87.0% and specificity of 70.6%, which was higher than the AUCs for CA15-3 and CEA, ie, 0.822 and 0.811, respectively. Moreover, exosomal H19 expression levels were associated with lymph node metastasis (P = 0.039), distant metastasis (P = 0.008), TNM stages (P = 0.022), ER (P=0.009), PR (P = 0.018), and Her-2 (P = 0.021). Conclusion Our results indicated that serum exosomal H19 acts as a novel biomarker for the diagnosis of BC.

Abstract
The mortality rate associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third highest among all digestive system tumors. However, the causes of HCC development and the underlying mechanisms have remained to be fully elucidated. In the present bioinformatics study, genetic markers were identified and their association with HCC was determined. The mRNA expression datasets GSE87630, GSE74656 and GSE76427 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. A total of 96 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened from the 3 GEO datasets, including 25 upregulated and 71 downregulated genes. DEGs were uploaded to the database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery to screen for enriched Gene Ontology terms in various categories and the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins was used to identify the interactions and functions of the DEGs. A total of 3 genetic markers were identified in a stepwise pathway and functional analysis in a previous study. The association of the genetic markers with prognosis was analysed using the UALCAN online analysis tool. Regression analysis was also performed to identify the relationship between HCC grade and disease recurrence and the expression of genetic markers using The Cancer Genome Atlas HCC dataset. In addition, the expression of the 3 genetic markers in HCC tissues was determined using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, the Oncomine database and the Human Protein Atlas database. The expression levels of the 3 genetic markers cyclin B2 (CCNB2), nucleolar and spindle-associated protein 1 (NUSAP1) and thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) were significantly correlated with each other and high mRNA expression of CCNB2 was significantly associated with poor overall survival of patients with HCC. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that NUSAP1 and TK1 were capable of distinguishing between recurrent and non-recurrent HCC. Furthermore, CCNB2, NUSAP1 and TK1 were highly correlated with the HCC grade. It was also indicated that the mRNA expression of CCNB2, NUSAPA and TK1 was increased in primary HCC tissues when compared with that in adjacent tissues. The present study identified that the CCNB2, NUSAP1 and TK1 genes may serve as prognostic markers for HCC, and may be of value from the perspectives of basic research and clinical treatment of HCC.

Abstract
This review is aimed at providing an overview of recent advances made in the field of meat quality prediction, particularly in Europe. The different methods used in research labs or by the production sectors for the development of equations and tools based on different types of biological (genomic or phenotypic) or physical (spectroscopy) markers are discussed. Through the various examples, it appears that although biological markers have been identified, quality parameters go through a complex determinism process. This makes the development of generic molecular tests even more difficult. However, in recent years, progress in the development of predictive tools has benefited from technological breakthroughs in genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. Concerning spectroscopy, the most significant progress was achieved using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to predict the composition and nutritional value of meats. However, predicting the functional properties of meats using this method-mainly, the sensorial quality-is more difficult. Finally, the example of the MSA (Meat Standards Australia) phenotypic model, which predicts the eating quality of beef based on a combination of upstream and downstream data, is described. Its benefit for the beef industry has been extensively demonstrated in Australia, and its generic performance has already been proven in several countries.

Abstract
Pegylated interferon alpha (PEG-IFN-α) is a first-line treatment for patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), but its efficacy varies from individual to individual. Early discrimination between responder and non-responder patients is important for optimal clinical management. In addition, low therapeutic efficacy is still a major issue; thus, treatment timing should be optimized.We reviewed our experience with hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg)-positive patients treated with PEG-IFN-α, alone or in combination with nucleoside analogues (NAs), from 2009 through 2014. Collected data included both general characteristics of 113 patients and laboratory data at baseline and at treatment weeks 12, 24, 52, and 76. The endpoint was HBeAg seroconversion at week 76.A total of 113 patients with changed to or start of NAs therapy were included in this study. At the end of treatment, 44 (38.9%) patients exhibited HBeAg seroconversion. Patients with HBeAg seroconversion had lower baseline HBeAg (475.5 vs 751.7; P = .007). The incidence of HBeAg seroconversion was significantly higher among patients with HBeAg ≤ 500 signal-to-cutoff ratio (S/CO) (OR = 2.60, 95% CI: 1.16-5.83, P = .02) at baseline, HBeAg S/CO ≤ 20 (OR = 3.37, 95% CI: 1.47-7.73, P = .003), or a higher than 10-fold HBeAg drop (OR = 3.55, 95% CI: 1.50-8.37, P = .003) at week 12 or HBeAg ≤ 15 S/CO (OR = 10.35, 95% CI: 4.09-26.20, P < .001) at week 24. Subgroup analyses demonstrated that in patients with HBeAg >20 S/CO at 24 weeks, the addition of NAs treatment may increase HBeAg seroconversion (23.3% vs 0%, P = .03).HBeAg levels had an impact on the rate of serological conversion in CHB patients receiving PEG-IFN-based treatment. Combination therapy with NAs should be considered in CHB patients maintaining a high HBeAg level after 24 weeks of PEG-IFN monotherapy.

Abstract
Bladder urothelial carcinoma is a malignant tumor with a high incidence in the uropoietic system. Considerable studies have shown that long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) plays an important role in the development and progression of bladder urothelial carcinoma. In this study, the lncRNA expression and clinical data of 377 bladder urothelial carcinoma patients were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas database and differentially expressed lncRNAs in cancer and normal groups were evaluated. Univariate COX and multivariate COX regression analyses of prognosis were performed on differentially expressed lncRNAs in the training data sets, six prognosis-related lncRNAs (LINC02195, LINC01484, LINC01468, SMC2-AS1, AC011298.1, and PTPRD-AS1) were assessed, and a six-lncRNA signature was constructed. The predictive capability of this six-lncRNA signature was validated in the testing data sets and entire data sets. The prognostic ability of the six-lncRNA signature was independent of other clinical elements after multivariate COX regression and stratified analyses of with other clinical elements. We performed functional enrichment analysis with the six prognosis-related lncRNAs. Results of functional enrichment revealed that these prognosis-related lncRNAs might promote the development and metastasis of bladder urothelial carcinoma. In summary, the six-lncRNA signature that we developed could effectively predict the prognosis of bladder urothelial carcinoma patients. This six-lncRNA signature might be a novel independent prognostic marker of bladder urothelial carcinoma. Moreover, it also provides novel insights into the mechanism of bladder urothelial carcinoma.

Abstract
DNA methylation at the 5 position of cytosine (5-mC) is an epigenetic hallmark that is critical in various biological and pathological processes such as DNA methylation regulation, and initiation and development of cancers. 5-mC can be oxidized to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC) by the ten-eleven translocation family of DNA hydroxylases. Accumulating evidence has reported that loss of 5-hmC is associated with cancer development. However, its level in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains unclear. The present study reports that the loss of 5-hmC is an epigenetic mark of PTCs, associated with their malignant biological behavior, providing diagnostic and predictive advantages over DNA hypomethylation (5-mC), an acknowledged epigenetic alteration in cancer. In addition, the 5-hmC staining levels were decreased in cases of micro-carcinoma with lymph node metastasis, which suggests that 5-hmC expression levels could be used as valuable biomarkers for predicting malignant potential and assist in the selection of therapeutic strategies in PTC; therefore, 5-hmC has the potential to provide a more precise direction for PTC therapy.

Abstract
A growing body of research has suggested heart rate variability (HRV) may be reduced in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in comparison to neurotypical cohorts. While there have been several studies investigating HRV in children diagnosed with ASD, few studies have been conducted in adults. The objective of the current study was to investigate autonomic nervous system activity as assessed by HRV in adults diagnosed with ASD. We hypothesized that adults with ASD would show a reduction in HRV compared to neurotypical participants. Participants diagnosed with ASD (n = 55) were recruited from the Autism Clinic for Translational Research at the Brain and Mind Centre (University of Sydney) between 2013 and 2017. Neurotypical participants were recruited from advertisements and online media. Resting state heart rate was measured for 5 min while participants sat in an upright position. Results showed there was an overall significant difference in resting-state HRV between adults diagnosed with ASD compared to the neurotypical control group. Logarithmically transformed high frequency (HF) and root mean square of successive differences were particularly decreased in the ASD group, suggesting lower parasympathetic activity. The use of psychotropic medications and comorbidities were associated with reductions in low frequency of HRV. Our data suggest an overall dysregulation in resting autonomic activity in adults with ASD. This may represent an important physiological mechanism leading to potential cardiovascular risk in ASD, which warrants further investigation. Autonomic disruptions underlying reductions in heart rate variability (HRV) have been linked to a range of mental and physical health conditions. We assessed resting-state HRV in adults diagnosed with ASD in comparison to healthy individuals. Our results showed reduced heart rate variability in people diagnosed with ASD compared to adults without ASD. These findings implicate a role for autonomic activity as a potentially modifiable risk factor for ASD.

Abstract
(1) Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is defined as an inflammatory disorder that presents an increasingly prevalent health problem. Accelerated aging has been examined as a pathologic mechanism of many chronic diseases like COPD. We examined whether COPD is combined with accelerated aging, studying two hormones, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and growth hormone (GH), known to be characteristic biological markers of aging. (2) Methods: Data were collected from 119 participants, 70 (58.8%) COPD patients and 49 (41.2%) from a health control group over the period of 2014–2016 in a spirometry program. Information about their medical history, tobacco use, and blood tests was obtained. (3) Results: The average age of the health control patients was 73.5 years (SD = 5.5), and that of the COPD patients was 75.4 years (SD = 6.9). Both groups were similar in age and sex. A greater proportion of smokers were found in the COPD group (87.1%) versus the control group (36.7%). The majority of COPD patients were classified as STAGE II (51.4%) and STAGE III (37.1%) according to GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Levels of DHEA (SD = 17.1) and GH (SD = 0.37) were significantly lower in the COPD group (p < 0.001) compared to those in the controls (SD = 26.3, SD = 0.79). DHEA and GH were more significant and negatively correlated with age. The regression equation of DHEA with age produced a coefficient equal to 1.26. In this study, the difference in DHEA between COPD patients and controls was, on average, 30.2 μg/dL, indicating that the biological age of a COPD patient is on average about 24 years older than that of a control subject of the same age. Similarly, the difference in GH between COPD patients and controls was, on average, 0.42 ng/mL, indicating that the biological age of a COPD patient is on average about 13.1 years older than that of a control subject of the same age. (4) Conclusions: The findings of our study strongly suggest the presence of premature biological aging in COPD patients. Their biological age could actually vary from 13 to 23 years older than non-COPD controls according to DHEA and GH variation.

Abstract
Osteosarcoma is among the most frequently occurring bone tumors in infants and teenagers. However, despite its widespread prevalence, no effective diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for osteosarcoma are known. Macrophage inhibitory cytokine 1 (MIC-1) has been considered a promising biological marker of various tumor types. However, the possible role of circulating MIC-1 as a screening biomarker for osteosarcoma remains to be elucidated. The present study evaluated the circulating levels of MIC-1 in patients with osteosarcoma with the aim of elucidating its effect on the diagnosis and prognosis of this specific tumor. The circulating levels of MIC-1 were measured via an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 300 individuals, including 100 patients with osteosarcoma, 100 patients with benign bone tumors, and 100 healthy subjects, and its correlation with clinicopathological characteristics was then evaluated. Various analyses were performed to determine its utility in diagnosis and prognosis. The levels of circulating MIC-1 were increased considerably in patients with osteosarcoma. The patients bearing larger tumors, those with distant metastases, and those with later-stage tumors had relatively higher levels of MIC-1. According to the multivariate logistic regression analysis, a high level of circulating MIC-1 was an independent variable for distant metastases. Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed MIC-1 as a possible biological marker for distinguishing patients from healthy controls. Patients with osteosarcoma with higher levels of MIC-1 had relatively higher risk of mortality. Furthermore, multivariate data analysis on general survival rate revealed that a high level of circulating MIC-1 was a prognostic indicator of osteosarcoma. These findings suggest that an elevated level of circulating MIC-1 is a novel potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for osteosarcoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although different clinical and experimental parameters have been used to estimate disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, the relationship between red blood cell distribution width-to-platelet ratio (RPR) and disease activity in SLE has not been previously illuminated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between RPR levels and disease activity in SLE. METHODS This study enrolled 105 SLE patients and 105 healthy subjects. We divided the patients into 2 groups using the SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) 2000. Group 1 included patients with SLEDAI score ≤9 (mild disease activity group) and group 2 with SLEDAI >9 (severe disease activity group). Correlations between RPR and disease activity were then analyzed. A subgroup follow-up analysis of 93 patients was conducted to explore the effect of SLE-related glucocorticoid therapy. RESULTS The PLR and RPR values of SLE patients were significantly higher compared with the controls (both P < .001), whereas mean platelet volume was decreased (P < .05). The RPR level was found to be positively correlated with SLEDAI (r = 0.368, P < .001) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (r = 0.313, P = .027). According to the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve, the optimal cut-off value for predicting SLE using RPR was 0.073, and the area under ROC curve was 0.817. RPR level was correlated with clinical disease activity in SLE, and its value was normalized after treatment. CONCLUSION RPR may be a useful measurement for the assessment of disease activity in SLE patients.

Abstract
microRNA-30c (miR-30c) is a member of the miR-30s family, which is known to serve important roles in the occurrence and development of numerous tumor types. Our previous microarray analysis of extracted RNA from tissue samples was conducted to examine the expression of miR-30c and predict miR-30c target genes. In the present study, it was determined that the expression of miR-30c was differentially expressed in 82 paired gastric cancer (GC) and paracancerous tissues. Cellular expression of miR-30c in two GC cell lines MKN-45, MKN-74 and one non-cancer cell line GES-1 was modified using the miR-30c-mimic and miR-30c-inhibitor reagents, in a series of transfection experiments. Following transfection of cancer and non-cancer cell lines with the miR-30c-mimic, cell proliferation and apoptosis rates were increased. Compared with the NC group, MKN-74 cell proliferation was significantly inhibited (P<0.05) following transfection with the miR-30c-mimic at 48 and 24 h, GES-1 was significantly inhibited (P<0.05) at 24 and 48 h, and apoptosis was significantly reduced in transfected MKN-74 cells (P<0.05). The clinicopathological data and the expression of BCL-9 and miR-30c in patients with GC were used to identify associations. The expression levels of miR-30c were associated with age. Western blot analysis demonstrated that the BCL-9 expression levels in MKN-74 cells were higher following transfection with the miR-30c-mimic, and were lower following transfection with the miR-30c-inhibitor, both compared with the negative control group. It was concluded that compared with the negative control group, the expression of miR-30c was low in GC tissues and may be involved in GC development via regulation of proliferation, apoptosis and the cell cycle.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to establish the reference values for circulating pregnancy-associated placental microRNAs in maternal plasma and clarify their clinical significance in patients with hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (HDP). METHODS Blood samples were collected from 145 women with uncomplicated pregnancies (24, 26, 31 and 32 women at 12, 23, 30 and 36 weeks of gestation, respectively, and 32 women 1 day after delivery). Plasma concentrations of pregnancy-associated placental microRNAs (miR-515-3p, miR-517a, miR-517c and miR-518b) were measured by quantitative real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Reference values for each microRNA were determined by the line of best fit and 95% prediction interval and are expressed as logarithmic transformation. To clarify the clinical significance of these reference values, we measured the plasma concentrations of pregnancy-associated microRNAs in a different population comprising 33 pregnant women with HDP and 44 women with uncomplicated pregnancies. RESULTS Reference values for circulating pregnancy-associated placental microRNAs on chromosome 19 miRNA clusters showed an increasing tendency as pregnancy progressed and decreased significantly 1 day after delivery (P < 0.05). The sensitivity and specificity of each reference value were 57.6% and 93.2% for miR-515-3p, 63.6% and 75.0% for miR-517a, 75.8% and 79.5% for miR-517c and 63.6% and 75.0% for miR-518b, respectively. The positive and negative predictive values of each reference value were 86.4% and 74.5% for miR-515-3p, 65.6% and 73.3% for miR-517a, 73.5% and 81.4% for miR-517c and 65.6% and 73.3% for miR-518b, respectively. CONCLUSION Establishing the reference values for circulating pregnancy-associated placental microRNAs in maternal plasma could be useful for the evaluation of HDP.

Abstract
Doublecortin (DCX) is a microtubule-associated protein widely used as an indicator of neurogenesis in immunohistochemical analyses of the postmortem adult brain. A recent study reported that DCX can be quantified in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from healthy rats between postnatal day 0 (P0) and P30. However, it is currently unclear whether the concentration of DCX in the CSF (CSF-DCX) may represent a measure of endogenous neurogenesis. To address this question, this study examined the impact of a neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury, known to induce neurogenesis, on CSF-DCX. HI was elicited at P7 in Sprague-Dawley rat neonates, and CSF was collected serially from the cisterna magna at P5 and P10, or at P10 and P15. A sandwich immunoassay was used to measure CSF-DCX. Brains from P10 neonates were analyzed immunohistochemically for neurogenesis and cell death markers. Mean CSF-DCX was significantly higher in HI- than in sham-exposed animals, at both P10 and P15. In the HI group at P10, CSF-DCX and stroke severity correlated positively. DCX immunoreactivity was increased in the ipsilateral neurogenic niches from the P10 HI brains in comparison with that of shams. The number of proliferative DCX-positive cells was higher in the ipsilateral hippocampal subgranular zone (SGZ) than in the HI contralateral or sham SGZ. Thus, neonatal HI brain injury disrupts the developmental time-course of DCX levels in the CSF. Our data suggest that the increased concentration of DCX in the CSF after neonatal HI is the result of both cellular injury and increased neurogenesis.

Abstract
Background Cryptococcus is the most common etiology of adult meningitis in Africa. Amphotericin B deoxycholate remains paramount to treatment, despite toxicities, including acute kidney injury (AKI). We assessed the ability of the following urine markers to predict AKI in patients who received amphotericin B: urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), cystatin C (CysC), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP-2), and protein. Methods One hundred and thirty human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–infected participants with cryptococcal meningitis were enrolled and received amphotericin and fluconazole for 2 weeks. We defined AKI as glomerular filtration rate (GFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2; measured urine NGAL, CysC, TIMP-2, and protein; and explored AKI incidence, risk factors, and associations with mortality using Cox proportional hazards models. Results Participants were 48% female with a median age of 35 years, a median CD4 count of 21 cells/μL, and 44% died within 12 months. Incident AKI occurred in 42% and was associated with mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 2.8; P < .001). Development of AKI was associated with female sex (P = .04) and with higher CD4 count (49 vs 14 cells/μL; P < .01). Urine protein level in the highest quartile independently predicted AKI and mortality (aHR = 1.64, P = .04; aHR = 2.13, P = .02, respectively). Urine NGAL levels in the highest quartile independently predicted AKI (aHR = 1.65; P = .04). Conclusions Acute kidney injury occurred in 42% of patients, and AKI was associated with mortality. Urine biomarkers, specifically urine protein, may be useful for antecedent prediction of amphotericin-associated AKI but need further evaluation.

Abstract
Preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by mesorectal excision is the standard treatment for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). The balance between treatment efficacy and toxicity is a major issue in the clinical management of these patients. There is a requirement for the identification of predictive molecular biomarkers for the response of patients to CRT. The present study aimed to analyze the association between microRNA (miRNA/miR) expression and treatment efficacy in patients with LARC who were treated with preoperative CRT. From previous clinical trials, 55 patients for the test cohort and 130 patients for the validation cohort met the criteria for the present investigation. Through reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis, the expression of miR-21, −31, −125b, −145 and −630 in the diagnostic biopsies was analyzed. The primary endpoint of tumor regression was evaluated according to Mandard's Tumor Regression Grade (TRG) system. In the test cohort, a significant association was identified between low miRNA-145 expression and TRG1+2 (P=0.0003). Similarly, this association was identified in the validation cohort, although it did not reach statistical significance. Furthermore, a significant association between high miRNA-21 expression and TRG1+2 (P=0.035) was observed in the validation cohort. The remaining miRNAs analyzed were not associated with TRG. The results of the present study highlight the clinical importance of miRNAs in LARC and underline the necessity for validation studies in this setting.

Abstract
Retinal artery occlusion (RAO), retinal vein occlusion (RVO), diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are frequent ocular diseases with potentially sight-threatening outcomes. In the present review we discuss major findings of proteomic studies of RAO, RVO, DR and AMD, including an overview of ocular proteome changes associated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatments. Despite the severe outcomes of RAO, the proteome of the disease remains largely unstudied. There is also limited knowledge about the proteome of RVO, but proteomic studies suggest that RVO is associated with remodeling of the extracellular matrix and adhesion processes. Proteomic studies of DR have resulted in the identification of potential therapeutic targets such as carbonic anhydrase-I. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy is the most intensively studied stage of DR. Proteomic studies have established VEGF, pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) and complement components as key factors associated with AMD. The aim of this review is to highlight the major milestones in proteomics in RAO, RVO, DR and AMD. Through large-scale protein analyses, proteomics is bringing new important insights into these complex pathological conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression has been reported in several malignancies, but the expression of PD-L1 in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has been characterized rarely. The aim of this study was to assess the significance of PD-L1 expression and its associations with clinicopathologic factors and disease outcome in PTC. METHODS Immunohistochemistry staining was conducted retrospectively to evaluate the expression of PD-L1 in a total of 260 PTC tumors and corresponding non-tumor tissues. The correlations between PD-L1 expressions with clinicopathologic features and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were analyzed. RESULTS PD-L1 expression was positive in 52.3% (136/260) of PTC tumor tissues, which was significantly higher than in corresponding non-tumor thyroid tissues. In clinicopathologic analyses, this positive staining of PD-L1 was positively linked to multifocality (p = 0.001) and extrathyroidal extension (p = 0.001). In multivariate Cox regression analysis, positive PD-L1 expression in tumor tissue was significantly associated with worse RFS (hazard ratio 2.825 [confidence interval 1.149-6.943], p = 0.024). In subgroup analyses based on clinicopathologic factors, positive PD-L1 staining of tumor tissue was associated with worse RFS in males (p = 0.001), older patients (≥45 years; p = 0.001), and patients with a primary tumor size >4 cm (p = 0.002), multifocal tumors (p = 0.031), extrathyroidal extension (p = 0.012), and lymph node metastasis (p = 0.004). In contrast, positive PD-L1 staining predicted worse RFS in the subgroup of patients without Hashimoto's thyroiditis (p = 0.001) and treated with total thyroidectomy (p = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS PD-L1 is important in determining aggressiveness of PTC and could predict the prognosis of patients. Therefore, inhibition of PD-L1 is suggested as a potential strategy for the treatment of advanced PTC with high expression of PD-L1.

Abstract
AIM To examine the usefulness of the neutrophil : lymphocyte (N/L) ratio as a cost-effective and simple diagnostic marker of mature cystic teratoma (MCT) with malignant transformation (MT). METHODS A retrospective chart review was performed between 1998 and 2013 of 12 MCT patients with MT and between 2009 and 2013 of 130 patients with benign MCT. Data were collected on age, tumor size, white blood cell count with differential counts, tumor marker levels, and presenting features. RESULTS Older age, greater tumor size, higher CA19-9 or CA125, higher neutrophil count, and higher N/L ratio were associated with MT on univariate analysis. White blood cell count; lymphocyte count; and the tumor marker squamous cell carcinoma antigen were not associated with MT. Older age (≥median), larger tumor size (≥10 cm), and high N/L ratio (≥5.0) were predictors of MT (hazard ratio, 11.51, 5.87, and 11.11, respectively). Six of 12 patients were diagnosed with MT on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging and five of 12 had an N/L ratio ≥5.0. CONCLUSIONS Neutrophil : lymphocyte ratio is a potential preoperative diagnostic marker of MT. The optimal cut-off should be determined in future large-scale studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate which ultrasound findings or serum biomarkers, including insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1 and 3 (IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-3, respectively), in the first and early second trimesters are the best predictors for preterm delivery. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a case-control study conducted between March 2011 and March 2013 with women presenting for routine antenatal care at 11-18 weeks. We collected serum samples from pregnant women and stored them at -80°C. All patients underwent cervical length (CL) measurement at 18-21 weeks. We retrieved frozen samples for analysis from women with subsequent preterm and term delivery. Prediction models were developed using multivariate stepwise logistic regression. Receiver-operating characteristics curves were used to determine the most useful cutoff point. RESULTS Of the 72 women recruited, 24 women underwent spontaneous preterm delivery, and 48 women with term delivery were randomly selected as the control group, in a 1:2 ratio. The maternal serum concentration of IGFBP-3 and CL were significantly associated with preterm birth. CONCLUSION Among the various known ultrasound findings and serum biomarkers in the early midtrimester, only CL and IGFBP-3 are independent predictors for preterm delivery in asymptomatic women.
