Urchin-like Ce(HCOO)3 Synthesized by a Microwave-Assisted Method and Its Application in an Asymmetric Supercapacitor

In this work, a series of urchin-like Ce(HCOO)3 nanoclusters were synthesized via a facile and scalable microwave-assisted method by varying the irradiation time, and the structure-property relationship was investigated. The optimization of the reaction time was performed based on structural characterizations and electrochemical performances, and the Ce(HCOO)3-210 s sample shows a specific capacitance as high as 132 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. This is due to the optimal mesoporous hierarchical structure and crystallinity that are beneficial to its conductivity, offering abundant Ce3+/Ce4+ active sites and facilitating the transportation of electrolyte ions. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor based on Ce(HCOO)3//AC was fabricated, which delivers a maximum energy density of 14.78 Wh kg-1 and a considerably high power density of 15,168 W kg-1. After 10,000 continuous charge-discharge cycles at 3 A g-1, the ASC device retains 81.3% of its initial specific capacitance. The excellent comprehensive electrochemical performance of this urchin-like Ce(HCOO)3 offers significant promise for practical supercapacitor applications.

Ultra-High Cycling Stability of 3D Flower-like Ce(COOH)3 for Supercapacitor Electrode via a Facile and Scalable Strategy

An electrode material with high performance, long durability, and low cost for supercapacitors has long been desired in academia and industry. Among all the factors that affect the electrochemical performance and cycling stability of electrode materials, the morphology and intrinsic structure characteristics are the most important. In this study, a novel 3D flower-like Ce(COOH)3 electrode material was designed by taking advantage of the Ce3+ and -COOH groups and fabricated by a one-pot microwave-assisted method. The morphology and structure characteristics of the sample were examined by SEM, EDS, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, N2 adsorption/desorption techniques, and the electrochemical behaviors were investigated in a three-electrode configuration. The Ce(COOH)3 electrode presents an excellent specific capacitance of 140 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, higher than many other previously reported Ce-based electrodes. In addition, it delivers high rate capability that retains 60% of its initial capacitance when the current density is magnified 20 times. Dramatically, the Ce(COOH)3 electrode exhibits an ultra-high cycling stability with capacitance retention of 107.9% after 60,000 cycles, which is the highest durability among reported Ce-organic compound electrodes to the best of our knowledge. The excellent electrochemical performance is ascribed to its intrinsic crystal structure and unique morphology. This work indicates that the 3D flower-like Ce(COOH)3 has significant potential for supercapacitor applications and the facile and scalable synthesis strategy can be extended to produce other metal-organic composite electrodes.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Highly Active Single-Atom Fe/N/C Catalysts for High-Performance Aqueous and Flexible All-Solid-State Zn-Air Batteries

The development of low-cost single-atom electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is highly desired but remains a grand challenge. Superior to the conventional techniques, a microwave-assisted strategy is reported for rapid production of high-quality Fe/N/C single-atom catalysts (SACs) with profoundly enhanced reaction rate and remarkably reduced energy consumption. The as-synthesized catalysts exhibit an excellent ORR performance with a positive half-wave potential up to 0.90 V, a high turnover frequency of 0.76 s-1 , as well as a satisfied stability with a lost half-wave potential of just 27 mV over 9000 cycles (much better than that of Pt/C with 107 mV lost) and good methanol resistance. The open-circuit voltages of as-constructed aqueous and flexible all-solid-state Zn-air batteries (ZABs) are 1.56 and 1.52 V, respectively, higher than those of 20% Pt/C-based ones (i.e., 1.43 and 1.38 V, respectively). Impressively, they afford a peak power density of 235 mW cm-2 , which exceeds that of Pt/C (i.e., 186 mW cm-2 ), and is comparable to the best ones of Fe/N/C-based ZABs ever reported.

From Batch to the Semi-Continuous Flow Hydrogenation of pNB, pNZ-Protected Meropenem

Meropenem is currently the most common carbapenem in clinical applications. Industrially, the final synthetic step is characterized by a heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation in batch mode with hydrogen and Pd/C. The required high-quality standard is very difficult to meet and specific conditions are required to remove both protecting groups [i.e., p-nitrobenzyl (pNB) and p-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl (pNZ)] simultaneously. The three-phase gas-liquid-solid system makes this step difficult and unsafe. The introduction of new technologies for small-molecule synthesis in recent years has opened up new landscapes in process chemistry. In this context, we have investigated meropenem hydrogenolysis using microwave (MW)-assisted flow chemistry for use as a new technology with industrial prospects. The reaction parameters (catalyst amount, T, P, residence time, flow rate) in the move from the batch process to semi-continuous flow were investigated under mild conditions to determine their influence on the reaction rate. The optimization of the residence time (840 s) and the number of cycles (4) allowed us to develop a novel protocol that halves the reaction time compared to batch production (14 min vs. 30 min) while maintaining the same product quality. The increase in productivity using this semi-continuous flow technique compensates for the slightly lower yield (70% vs. 74%) obtained in batch mode.

Characterization and Cytotoxic Activity of Microwave-Assisted Extracted Crude Fucoidans from Different Brown Seaweeds

Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) is recognized as a green method for extraction of natural products. The current research aimed to explore the MAE for fucoidans extraction from different brown seaweeds, including Fucus vesiculosus, F. spiralis, and Laminaria saccharina. Following several solvent-extraction pre-treatment steps and MAE optimization, the algal biomasses were extracted in a ratio of 1:25 in 0.1 M HCl containing 2 M CaCl2 for 1.0 min. The results showed that L. saccharina's extract was different from the others, regarding the highest sugar content reached 0.47 mg glucose equivalent/mg extract being confirmed by monosaccharide composition analysis and the lowest fucoidan content and sulfation degree at 0.09 mg/mg extract and 0.13, respectively. Moreover, these findings were confirmed by tentative structural elucidation based on Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry which also showed a different spectrum. However, the MAE enhanced melanoidins formation in products, which was confirmed by the intense band at 1420 cm-1. Interestingly, the results of monomeric composition showed that fucoidan extract by MAE from F. vesiculosus belonged to sulfated galactofucans which are known for their potential bioactivities. Furthermore, the cytotoxic activity of the four fucoidans in concentrations ranging from 4.9 µg/mL to 2500 µg/mL was investigated and correlated with the chemical characterization showing that F. vesiculosus_MAE fucoidan was the most potent and safest. The current research revealed the chemical heterogeneity of fucoidans regarding taxonomical class and used greener extraction method of fucoidans toward the achievement of the UN sustainability goals.

A spotlight on application of microwave-assisted modifications of plant derived polymers in designing novel drug delivery systems

Polymers are a fundamental part of numerous industries and can be conjugated with many other materials and components to have a vast array of products. Biomaterials have been extensively studied for their application in pharmaceutical formulation development, tissue engineering, and biomedical areas. However, the native form of many polymers has limitations concerning microbial contamination, susceptibility, solubility, and stability. Chemical or physical modifications can overcome these limitations by tailoring the properties of polymers to meet several requirements. The polymer modifications are interdisciplinary, cutting across conventional materials, physics, biology, chemistry, medicine, and engineering limitations. Microwave irradiation has become a well-established technique for a few decades to drive and promote chemical modification reactions. This technique allows ease of temperature and power control to perform the synthesis protocols efficiently. Additionally, microwave irradiation contributes to green and sustainable chemistry. In this contribution, microwave-assisted polymer modifications were described with a special focus on their application in developing several novel dosage forms.

Extraction optimization and characterization of pectin from sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) capsule as a new neglected by-product

BACKGROUND

With production of over 6 million tonnes a year of sesame, its capsules are considered to be an unutilized waste. In this study, extraction of pectin from this novel source was optimized using a green method, and the functional and physiochemical characteristics of the resultant pectin were compared to commercial pectin.

RESULTS

In this study, the sesame capsule pectin (SCP) extraction conditions were optimized to reach maximum yield, and the results showed that the maximum pectin extraction yield (138 g kg^-1 ) was obtained under optimal conditions (microwave power 700 W, irradiation time 5 min, pH 1.5, and liquid-to-solid ratio 41.8 (mL g^-1 ). The results showed that the pectin was low methoxyl type with a galacturonic acid content of 670 g kg^-1 . The extracted pectin had a high molecular weight (341 kDa) and surface charge (34.09 ± 1.88 mV) and exhibited 66% DPPH radical scavenging. The obtained results from ¹ H-nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectra validated the presence of pectin structure in the extracted sample.

CONCLUSION

Sesame capsule pectin, when compared to commercial pectin, demonstrated better functional properties in terms of emulsifying properties, oil holding capacity, foaming capacity and antioxidant activity. SCP showed similar properties in comparison to its commercial counterpart, which suggests that it could well be considered as a new and suitable source for pectin extraction. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Ultrafast Microwave Polarizing Electrons to Form Vertically Aligned Metal Hybrids as Lithiophilic Buffer for Lithium-Metal Batteries

Lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted great attention because of their high theoretical capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, uncontrollable Li dendrite growth and significant volume expansion result in safety issues that largely limit their practical applications. Herein, we explore a microwave-assisted strategy for the rapid synthesis of vertically aligned metal hybrids on Cu foil (VAMH@CF). Such an elaborate architecture of VAMH provides a lithiophilic buffer layer after prelithiation, offering vast nucleation sites/seeds for Li deposition (Li@VAMH@CF) and lower nucleation overpotential. Consequently, Li@VAMH@CF exhibits an outstanding cyclability with a long lifespan (up to 5500 cycles) and a low voltage hysteresis (28 mV) in a symmetrical cell at 3 mA cm^-2. LiFePO₄||Li@VAMH@CF full cells deliver a reversible capacity of about 140 mAh g^-1 for 200 cycles, further demonstrating opportunities of the microwave-involved strategy for optimizing Li-metal anodes.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Organometallic Rhenium (I) Pentylcarbonato Complexes: New Synthon for Carboxylato, Sulfonato and Chlorido Complexes

Tricarbonylrhenium(I)(α-diimine) complexes are of importance because of their strong cytotoxic and fluorescence properties. Syntheses of such complexes were achieved through a two-step process. First, the pentylcarbonato complexes, fac-(CO)₃(α-diimine)ReOC(O)OC₅H₁₁ were synthesized through a microwave-assisted reaction of Re₂(CO)₁₀, α-diimine, 1-pentanol and CO₂ in a few hours. Second, the pentylcarbonato complexes are treated with carboxylic, sulfonic and halo acids to obtain the corresponding carboxylato, sulfonato and halido complexes. This is the first example of conversion of Re₂(CO)₁₀ into a rhenium carbonyl complex through microwave-assisted reaction.

Synthesis of benzo[a]furo[2, 3-c]phenazine derivatives through an efficient, rapid and via microwave irradiation under solvent-free conditions catalyzed by H3PW12O40@Fe3O4-ZnO for high-performance removal of methylene blue

A rapid, one-pot synthesis of eight benzo[a]furo[2,3-c]phenazine derivatives has been achieved in moderate to good yields in good yields via a multi-component of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione, arylglyoxal, indole (H, CH₃) in the presence of H₃PW₁₂O₄₀@Fe₃O₄-ZnO magnetic core-shell nanoparticles (MCNPs) under solvent-free conditions using microwave irradiation. The catalyst was synthesised and characterised by X-ray diffraction, EDX, TEM, FESEM, TGA, VSM and atomic force microscope. As an application for the synthesised nanocatalyst, degradation of methylene blue as heavy-mass organic pollution was measured. These results showed advantages for synthesis, such as mild reaction conditions, low energy consumption and economically affordable.

Microwave-Assisted Air Epoxidation of Mixed Biolefins over a Spherical Bimetal ZnCo-MOF Catalyst

Here, we report the synthesis of spherical bimetal ZnCo-MOF materials by a hydrothermal rotacrystallization method and their catalytic activity on the air epoxidation of mixed biolefins enhanced by microwaves. The structural and chemical properties of the ZnCo-MOF materials were fully characterized by XRD, IR, SEM, TG, XPS, and NH₃-TPD. The morphology of the material exhibited a three-dimensional spherical structure. From an NH₃-TPD test of the ZnCo-MOF catalyst, it could be concluded that the Zn_0.1Co₁-MOF-H-150 rpm material had the highest acidic content and the strongest acidity among the catalysts synthesized by different methods, which gave the best performance in the epoxidation of mixed biolefins. The air epoxidation reaction was carried out under atmospheric pressure and microwave conditions, in the absence of any initiator or coreducing agent. Moreover, the Zn_0.1Co₁-MOF catalyst could be recycled six times without reducing the catalytic activity significantly, which showed the stability of spherical catalyst material under microwaves.

Blossom and Their Immunomodulating Effect in Mice with DSS-Induced Colitis

Armeniaca mume Sieb. blossom is among the traditional Chinese edible flowers, and it is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Flavonoids are among the most abundant bioactive compounds in A. mume Sieb. blossom. However, the research on the extraction of flavonoids from A. mume Sieb. blossom and their immunomodulating function is insufficient. In this study, we developed a microwave-assisted enzymatic extraction of flavonoids from A. mume Sieb. blossom (FAMB) and explored their immunomodulating effect on mice with dextran sulfate sodium salt-induced colitis. The results showed that the optimum parameters for microwave-assisted enzymatic extraction of FAMB were as follows: cellulase: 2.0%; microwave power: 200 W; microwave action time: 5 min; and enzymatic hydrolysis time: 50 min. FAMB significantly promoted the lymphocyte proliferation and natural killer (NK) cell killing activity in colitis mice, and increased the concentrations of TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-2 in serum. FAMB also significantly reduced the apoptosis of spleen lymphocytes in these mice. These results demonstrated that the microwave-assisted enzymatic method could significantly improve the yield and efficacy extraction of FAMB. FAMB showed a good immunomodulation effect on colitis mice.

Super-Anticorrosive Materials Based on Bifunctionalized Reduced Graphene Oxide

The design of new materials with two or more functional groups must be strongly considered to achieve multifunctional coatings with outstanding properties such as active-passive protection against corrosion, low-friction, antifouling, and sensing, among others. In this sense, nanocomposites based on solvent-free epoxy resin/bifunctionalized reduced graphene oxide layers with NH₂ and NH₃⁺ groups (ER/BFRGO) with super-anticorrosive properties are for the first time reported here. The amine groups (-NH₂) act as cross-linker agents, which react with epoxy terminal groups from resin, thus closing the gap between the BFRGO layers and the polymeric matrix. Meanwhile, the ammonium ions (-NH₃⁺) are effective trapping agents of negatively charged atoms or molecules (e.g., Cl^-). This novel combination enables us to obtain nanocomposite coatings with passive-active protection against corrosion. ER/BFRGO deposited onto A36 mild steel exhibited a remarkably enhanced barrier against corrosion into a saline medium (1 M NaCl; 58.4 g/L), wherein the corrosion current density (i_corr) was diminished 6 orders of magnitude (i_corr = 5.12 × 10^-12 A/cm²), with respect to A36 mild steel coated only with ER (i_corr = 2.34 × 10^-6 A/cm²). Also, the highest polarization resistance R_p = 6.04 × 10⁷ Ω/cm² was obtained, which represents the lowest corrosion rate and corresponds to 3 orders of magnitude higher than A36 mild steel coated with ER (R_p = 1.43 × 10⁴ Ω/cm²). The strategy of bifunctionalization proposed herein to obtain bifunctionalized reduced GO with NH₂ and NH₃⁺ groups has not been disclosed in the literature before; in consequence, this work opens a new pathway toward the design of smart materials based on multifunctional nanomaterials.

Ultrasensitive Detection of Tetracycline Using Boron and Nitrogen Co-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots from Natural Carbon Source as the Paper-Based Nanosensing Probe in Difference Matrices

Herein, the boron and nitrogen co-doped 0-dimensional graphene quantum dots (B,N-GQDs) with high quantum yield (QY) were synthesized via microwave-assisted hydrothermal method at 170 °C for 20 min using fresh passion fruit juice and boric acid as the starting materials. The 3–6 layers of B,N-GQDs with mean particle size of 9 ± 1 nm were then used for ultra-sensitive and selective detection of tetracycline in aqueous and biological media. The hybridization of boron and nitrogen atoms into the GQD structures increases the intensity of electronegative, resulting in the enhancement of QY to 50 ± 1%. The B,N-GQDs show their excellent analytical performance on tetracycline determination after 2 min of reaction under an optimal condition at pH 5. The linear range of 0.04–70 µM and with limits of detection (LOD) of 1 nM in phosphate buffer saline (PBS), 1.9 nM in urine and 2.2 nM in human serum are obtained. Moreover, the high selectivity of tetracycline by B,N-GQDs over the other 23 interferences is observed. The π-π interaction and electron donor-acceptor principle play pivotal roles in enhancing the ultra-sensitivity and selectivity of B,N-GQDs toward TC detection. Moreover, the B, N-GQD based paper nanosensor exhibits an excellent analytical performance on visual detection of 0.1–30 µM TC in human serum. Results of this study clearly indicate the feasibility of synthesis of B,N-GQDs derived from passion fruit juice for ultrasensitive tetracycline detection, which can open an avenue to use natural products for the preparation of environmentally benign and biocompatible carbon nanomaterials for highly sensitive detection of drugs, antibiotics, organic compounds and biomarkers.

Melting and Recrystallization of Copper Nanoparticles Prepared by Microwave-Assisted Reduction in the Presence of Triethylenetetramine

The small sized copper nanoparticles (Cu-NPs), prepared in the presence of triethylene tetramine (TETA) and assisted with microwave irradiation, have an extremely low melting temperature. Melting of the small sizezd Cu-NPs can be triggered by the heat generated from the e-beam irradiation during SEM and TEM image construction. The dispersed Cu atoms around the agglomerated big Cu particles can undergo recrystallization immediately due to the strong driving force of the huge temperature difference to normal melting temperature (T_m = 1085 °C). Some of the Cu-NPs with bigger sizes also recrystallize and agglomerate into dense, big particles. According to X-ray diffraction patterns, these particles can agglomerate into compact, ordered Cu crystals in less than five minutes at 60 °C. The melting and recrystallization related endothermic and exothermic phase transitions of Cu-NPs can be found from differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) thermograms and optical microscopic pictures.

Preparation and Evaluation of Peptides with Potential Antioxidant Activity by Microwave Assisted Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Collagen from Sea Cucumber Acaudina Molpadioides Obtained from Zhejiang Province in China

The present study was focused on the preparation and characterization of the antioxidant peptides by microwave-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis of collagen from sea cucumber Acaudina molpadioides (ASC-Am) obtained from Zhejiang Province in China. The results exhibited the effects of microwave irradiation on hydrolysis of ASC-Am with different protease. Neutrase was selected from the four common proteases (papain, pepsin, trypsin, and neutrase) based on the highest content and DPPH scavenging activity of hydrolysate Fa (Molecular weight < 1 kDa). The content and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity of Fa obtained by hydrolysis of neutrase increased by 100% and 109% respectively at a microwave power of 300 W compared with no microwave irradiation. Five subfractions were obtained after performing the gel filtration chromatography, and the Fa.2 exhibited the highest DPPH scavenging activity. The amino acid analysis showed that the contents of Glutamic acid, Alanine, Tyrosine, and Phenylalanine in fraction Fa.2 increased significantly, but an obvious decrease in the content of Glycine was observed compared to Fa. Four peptides (Fa.2-A, Fa.2-B, Fa.2-C, and Fa.2-D) were purified from Fa.2 by high performance liquid chromatography, and Fa.2-C showed the highest DPPH scavenging activity. The sequence of Fa.2-C was identified as Phenylalanine-Leucine- Alanine-Proline with a half elimination ratio (EC₅₀) of 0.385 mg/mL. The antioxidant activity of Fa.2-C was probably attributed to the small molecular sizes and the presence of hydrophobic amino acid residues in its sequence. This report provided a promising method for the preparation of antioxidant peptides from collagen for food and medicinal purposes.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Black Titanium Monoxide for Synergistic Tumor Phototherapy

Black titanium oxide has attracted tremendous interest in tumor phototherapy via converting light energy to heat and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Nevertheless, current synthesis methods suffer from inert gas shielding, high costs, complicated procedures, and expensive facilities, which are fairly impractical for treatment application. Herein, we propose a one-step strategy for fast facile synthesis of black TiO nanoparticles via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis approach with Ti power, hydrochloric acid, and hydrofluoric acid without the requirement of an reducing agent and high-temperature calcination. The prepared black TiO nanoparticles with an average size of 52 nm exhibit strong absorbance from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared light region, favoring a single agent and single light-induced synergistic phototherapy of tumors. The black TiO nanoparticles shows an excellent performance in phototherapy with a photothermal conversion efficiency up to 50% and a prominent ROS generation under 808 nm laser irradiation. The toxicity and therapeutic effect in vitro and in vivo are investigated, and the results elucidate that black TiO nanoparticles possess good biocompatibility and remarkable synergistic tumor therapeutic efficacy. The proposed microwave-assisted method opens up a novel way for the synthesis of titanium-based material in a simple and fast manner, promoting their applications in the biomedical field.

Fast Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis of Pure Layered δ-MnO₂ for Multivalent Ion Intercalation

This work reports on the synthesis of layered manganese oxides (δ-MnO₂) and their possible application as cathode intercalation materials in Al-ion and Zn-ion batteries. By using a one-pot microwave-assisted synthesis route in 1.6 M KOH (Mn_VII:Mn_II = 0.33), a pure layered δ-MnO₂birnessite phase without any hausmannite traces was obtained after only a 14 h reaction time period at 110 °C. Attempts to enhance crystallinity level of as-prepared birnessite through increasing of reaction time up to 96 h in 1.6 M KOH failed and led to decreases in crystallinity and the emergence of an additional hausmannite phase. The influence of Mn_II:OH⁻ ratio (1:2 to 1:10) on phase crystallinity and hausmannite phase formation for 96 h reaction time was investigated as well. By increasing alkalinity of the reaction mixture up to 2.5 M KOH, a slight increase in crystallinity of birnessite phase was achieved, but hausmannite formation couldn’t be inhibited as hoped. The as-prepared layered δ-MnO₂ powder material was spray-coated on a carbon paper and tested in laboratory cells with Al or Zn as active materials. The Al-ion tests were carried out in EMIMCl/AlCl₃ while the Zn-Ion experiments were performed in water containing choline acetate (ChAcO) or a ZnSO₄ solution. Best performance in terms of capacity was yielded in the Zn-ion cell (200 mWh g⁻¹ for 20 cycles) compared to about 3 mAh g⁻¹ for the Al-ion cell. The poor activity of the latter system was attributed to low dissociation rate of tetrachloroaluminate ions (AlCl₄⁻) in the EMIMCl/AlCl₃ mixture into positive Al complexes which are needed for charge compensation of the oxide-based cathode during the discharge step.

Advantageous Microwave-Assisted Suzuki Polycondensation for the Synthesis of Aniline-Fluorene Alternate Copolymers as Molecular Model with Solvent Sensing Properties

Polymerization via Suzuki coupling under microwave (µW) irradiation has been studied for the synthesis of poly{1,4-(2/3-aminobenzene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dihexylfluorene)} (PAF), chosen as molecular model. Briefly, µW-assisted procedures accelerated by two orders of magnitude the time required when using classical polymerization processes, and the production yield was increased (>95%). In contrast, although the sizes of the polymers that were obtained by non-conventional heating reactions were reproducible and adequate for most applications, with this methodology the molecular weight of final polymers were not increased with respect to conventional heating. Asymmetric orientation of the amine group within the monomer and the assignments of each dyad or regioregularity, whose values ranged from 38% to 95% with this molecule, were analysed using common NMR spectroscopic data. Additionally, the synthesis of a new cationic polyelectrolyte, poly{1,4-(2/3-aminobenzene)-co-alt-2,7-[9,9´-bis(6''-N,N,N-trimethylammonium-hexyl)fluorene]} dibromide (PAFAm), from poly{1,4-(2/3-aminobenzene)-co-alt-2,7-[9,9´-bis(6''-bromohexyl)fluorene]} (PAFBr) by using previously optimized conditions for µW-assisted heating procedures was reported. Finally, the characterization of the final products from these batches showed unkown interesting solvatochromic properties of the PAF molecule. The study of the solvatochromism phenomena, which was investigated as a function of the polarity of the solvents, showed a well-defined Lippert correlation, indicating that the emission shift observed in PAF might be due to its interaction with surrounding environment. Proven high sensitivity to changes of its environment makes PAF a promising candidate of sensing applications.

Microwave-Assisted Regioselective Synthesis of 3-Functionalized Indole Derivatives via Three-Component Domino Reaction

A microwave-assisted regioselective synthesis of 3-functionalized indole derivatives via a three-component domino reaction of anilines, arylglyoxal monohydrates, and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds is described. The main advantages of this protocol are short reaction times, practical simplicity, its metal-free nature, the availability of starting materials, green solvents, and high regioselectivity.

Fast and Facile Synthesis of 4-Nitrophenyl 2-Azidoethylcarbamate Derivatives from N-Fmoc-Protected α-Amino Acids as Activated Building Blocks for Urea Moiety-Containing Compound Library

A fast and facile synthesis of a series of 4-nitrophenyl 2-azidoethylcarbamate derivatives as activated urea building blocks was developed. The N-Fmoc-protected 2-aminoethyl mesylates derived from various commercially available N-Fmoc-protected α-amino acids, including those having functionalized side chains with acid-labile protective groups, were directly transformed into 4-nitrophenyl 2-azidoethylcarbamate derivatives in 1 h via a one-pot two-step reaction. These urea building blocks were utilized for the preparation of a series of urea moiety-containing mitoxantrone-amino acid conjugates in 75-92% yields and parallel solution-phase synthesis of a urea compound library consisted of 30 members in 38-70% total yields.

Synthesis of Novel Pyrazinamide Derivatives Based on 3-Chloropyrazine-2-carboxamide and Their Antimicrobial Evaluation

Aminodehalogenation of 3-chloropyrazine-2-carboxamide with variously substituted benzylamines yielded a series of fifteen 3-benzylaminopyrazine-2-carboxamides. Four compounds possessed in vitro whole cell activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37R_v that was at least equivalent to that of the standard pyrazinamide. MIC values ranged from 6 to 42 µM. The best MIC (6 µM) was displayed by 3-[(4-methylbenzyl)amino]pyrazine-2-carboxamide (8) that also showed low cytotoxicity in the HepG2 cell line (IC₅₀ ≥ 250 µM). Only moderate activity against Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus was observed. No activity was detected against any of tested fungal strains. Molecular docking with mycobacterial enoyl-ACP reductase (InhA) was performed to investigate the possible target of the prepared compounds. Active compounds shared common binding interactions of known InhA inhibitors. Antimycobacterial activity of the title compounds was compared to the previously published benzylamino-substituted pyrazines with differing substitution on the pyrazine core (carbonitrile moiety). The title series possessed comparable activity and lower cytotoxicity than molecules containing a carbonitrile group on the pyrazine ring.

Superior Cycle Stability Performance of Quasi-Cuboidal CoV2O6 Microstructures as Electrode Material for Supercapacitors

In this study, a rapid, facile, and environment-friendly microwave-assisted method followed by annealing for synthesizing the quasi-cuboidal CoV₂O₆ is developed. The as-prepared samples manifest high supercapacitor properties with a specific capacitance of 223 F g^-1, good rate capability, and superior cycle stability, retaining 123.3% capacitance when the number of cycles reaches 15,000 after determined by electrochemical tests. More importantly, the quasi-cuboidal CoV₂O₆ for the first time is introduced into the supercapacitor as a kind of electrode material. The superior electrochemical performance of the quasi-cuboidal CoV₂O₆ will render the metal vanadium oxides as new and attractive active material for promising application in supercapacitors.

Microwave Controlled Reductive Cyclization: A Selective Synthesis of Novel Benzimidazole-alkyloxypyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoxalinones

An efficient cascade synthesis of novel benzimidazole linked alkyloxypyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoxalinones was explored on soluble polymer support under microwave irradiation. Two exclusive protocols have been developed for the partial and full reductive cyclization by controlling the microwave energy. Commencing from the same substrate, ortho nitro pyrrol carboxylates, N-hydroxy pyrroloquinoxalinones were obtained by partial reductive cyclization (60 °C, 7 min), and the synthesis of pyrroloquinoxalinones was accomplished by full reductive cyclization (85 °C, 12 min). This method represents the first synthesis of N-hydroxy pyrroloquinoxalinones using Pd/C and ammonium formate as reducing agents. Further employing a variety of alkyl bromides, the obtained pyrroloquinoxalinones were transformed to their corresponding O- and N-alkylated analogues to deliver the diversified, novel molecular entities.

Self-reactivated mesostructured Ca-Al-O composite for enhanced high-temperature CO2 capture and carbonation/calcination cycles performance

In this study, highly efficient high-temperature CO2 sorbents of calcium aluminate (Ca-Al-O) mesostructured composite were synthesized using presynthesized mesoporous alumina (MA) as a porous matrix to react with calcium nitrate through a microwave-assisted process. Upon annealing at 600 °C, a highly stable mesoporous structure composed of poorly crystalline Ca12Al14O33 phase and the CaO matrix was obtained. The Ca-Al-O mesostructured sorbents with a Ca(2+)/Al(3+) ratio of 5:1 exhibit an enhanced increasing CO2 absorption kinetics in the CO2 capture capacity from 37.2 wt % to 48.3 wt % without apparent degradation with increasing carbonation/calcination cycling up to 50 at 700 °C due to the strong self-reactivation effect of the mesoporous Ca-Al-O microstructure. Remarkable improvements in the CaO-CaCO3 conversion attained from the mesostructured Ca-Al-O composite can be explained using the concept combined with available mesoporous structure and Ca12Al14O33 phase content. However, a high Ca(2+)/Al(3+) =8:1 Ca-Al-O composite causes degradation because the pores become blocked and partial sintering induces CaO agglomeration.

The physicochemical properties of microwave-assisted encapsulated anthocyanins from Ipomoea batatas as affected by different wall materials

This study focuses on the impact of different wall materials on the physicochemical properties of microwave-assisted encapsulated anthocyanins from Ipomoea batatas. Using the powder characterization technique, purple sweet potato anthocyanin (PSPAs) powders were analysed for moisture content, water activity, dissolution time, hygroscopicity, color and morphology. PSPAs were produced using different wall materials: maltodextrin (MD), gum arabic (GA) and a combination of gum arabic and maltodextrin (GA + MD) at a 1:1 ratio. Each of the wall materials was homogenized to the core material at a core/wall material ratio of 5 and were microencapsulated by microwave-assisted drying at 1100 W. Results indicated that encapsulated powder with the GA and MD combination presented better quality of powder with the lowest value of moisture content and water activity. With respect to morphology, the microcapsule encapsulated with GA + MD showed several dents in coating surrounding its core material, whereas other encapsulated powders showed small or slight dents entrapped onto the bioactive compound. Colorimetric analysis showed changes in values of L, a*, b*, hue and chroma in the reconstituted powder compared to the initial powder.

Mechanism of Generation of ZnO Microstructures by Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Approach

In this report, a technique for rapid synthesis of ZnO microstructures by microwave-assisted heating of precursors at hydrothermal conditions is demonstrated. Further, the reaction mechanism for the growth of ZnO microstructures is analyzed. An accelerated rate of reaction obtained using microwaves enables a dissolution-recrystallization mechanism for generation of one dimensional (1D) rod-like structures, thereby showing that time of reaction can be used to dictate ZnO microstructure morphology.

Synthesis, Structure and Antioxidant Activity of (Tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-galactopyranosyl)thiosemicarbazones of Substituted Benzaldehydes

Some new substituted benzaldehyde (2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-galactopyranosyl) thiosemicarbazones were synthesised by reaction of 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-galactopyranosyl thiosemicarbazide and different substituted benzaldehydes. The reaction was performed using conventional and microwave-assisted heating methods. The structures of thiosemicarbazones were confirmed by spectroscopic (IR, (1) H NMR, (13) C NMR and MS) method. The antioxidant activity of these thiosemicarbazones was evaluated, in vitro and in vivo, and it's shown that some of these compounds had significant antioxidant activity.

Diverging DOS strategy using an allene-containing tryptophan scaffold and a library design that maximizes biologically relevant chemical space while minimizing the number of compounds

A diverging diversity-oriented synthesis (DOS) strategy using an allene-containing tryptophan as a key starting material was investigated. An allene-yne substituted derivative of tryptophan 12 gave indolylmethylazabicyclooctadiene 17 when subjected to a microwave-assisted allenic [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction. This same tryptophan-derived precursor afforded an indolylmethyldihydrocyclopentapyridinone 14 when subjected to a rhodium(I)-catalyzed cyclocarbonylation reaction and an indolylmethylpyrrolidinocyclopentenones 16 when reacted with molybdenum hexacarbonyl. Construction of allenic tetrahydro-β-carboline scaffolds via a Pictet-Spengler reaction and subsequent silver(I)-catalyzed cycloisomerization afforded tetrahydroindolizinoindoles (21). Attachment of allene and alkyne groups to the tetrahydro-β-carboline, followed by a microwave-assisted allenic [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction, provided tetrahydrocyclobutaindoloquinolizinones 24 and the tetrahydrocyclopentenone indolizinoindolone 26 when reacted with molybdenum hexacarbonyl. These six scaffolds were used as templates for the construction of a virtual library of 11 748 compounds employing 44 indoles, 12 aldehydes, and 51 alkynes. Diversity analyses using a combination of cell-based chemistry space computations using BCUT (Burden (B) CAS (C) Pearlman at the University of Texas (UT)) metrics and Tanimoto coefficient (Tc) similarity calculations using two-dimensional (2D) fingerprints showed that the compounds in the virtual library occupied new chemical space when compared to the 327,000 compounds in the molecular libraries small molecule repository (MLSMR). A subset of fifty-three compounds was identified from the virtual library using the DVS package of Sybyl 8.0; this subset represents the most diverse compounds within the chemical space defined by these compounds and will be synthesized and screened for biological activity.
