Residential Greenness, Lifestyle, and Vitamin D: A Longitudinal Cohort of South Asian Origin and Caucasian Ethnicity Women Living in the South of the UK

The global population is at risk of vitamin D deficiency due to low exposure to sunlight and low intake of the vitamin through diet. The aim of this study was to investigate in women the association between vitamin D status and parathyroid hormone (PTH), ultraviolet radiation, lifestyle, ethnicity, social conditions, and residential greenness. A 1-year longitudinal study assessed vitamin D status in 309 women living at latitude 51°14' N. Blood samples were taken four times throughout the year for analysis of 25(OH)D and serum PTH concentration. After each seasonal visit, the individuals completed 4-day diet diaries and used two dosimeter badges for 1 week to estimate weekly UVR exposure. A questionnaire was applied to provide information about lifestyle and their ethnicity. Residential greenness was measured by Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), within a 1000 m radius around each participant's home address. Women living in greener spaces were more likely to have improved vitamin D status (RR: 1.51; 95%CI: 1.13-2.02), as well as those who were more exposed to UVR (RR: 2.05; 95%CI: 1.44-2.92). Our results provide an insight into the connection between residential greenness, lifestyle, and vitamin D status comparing two ethnicities in a country with a temperate climate and with a high degree of urbanization.

Association between Residential Greenness and Allostatic Load: A Cohort Study

The association between residential greenness and allostatic load (AL), a marker of composite physiological burden and predictor of chronic disease, remains understudied. This study comprised 212,600 UK Biobank participants recruited over 2007 and 2010 at the baseline. Residential greenness was modeled as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from high spatial resolution (0.50 m) color infrared imagery and measured within a 0.5 km radial catchment. AL was measured as a composite index from 13 biomarkers comprising three physiological systems (metabolic, cardiovascular, and inflammatory systems) and two organ systems (liver and kidney). Multilevel mixed-effects generalized linear models with a random intercept for UK Biobank assessment centers were employed to examine the association between residential greenness and AL. Each interquartile range (IQR = 0.24) increment in NDVI greenness was associated with lower AL (beta (β) = -0.28, 95% confidence interval (CI) = -0.55, -0.01). Consistently, relative to the lowest NDVI greenness quintile, participants in the highest quintile had lower AL (β = -0.64, 95% CI = -1.02, -0.26). The proportion of the association between greenness and AL mediated by the physical activity was 3.2%. In conclusion, residential greenness was protectively associated with AL, a composite marker of wear and tear and general health.

Greenness, Genetic Predisposition, and Tinnitus

This study aimed to investigate the association between residential greenness and tinnitus and the potential interaction between greenness and genetic predisposition to tinnitus. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is used to measure residential greenness. The tinnitus is defined based on self-reported. In the cross-sectional analyses, logistic regression models are used for the baseline sample of the United Kingdom Biobank cohort. In the secondary analysis, a Cox proportional hazard model is used for a subsample of participants who completed the tinnitus questionnaire at follow-up. In the cross-sectional analysis including 106471 participants, higher residential greenness is associated with lower odds of tinnitus for each interquartile range increase in continuous NDVI, with an adjusted odds ratio of 0.97 (95% confidence interval: 0.95 to 0.99) for tinnitus. A similar association is observed in the longitudinal analysis, with an adjusted hazard ratio of 0.92 (95% confidence interval: 0.86 to 0.98) for the association of NDVI increased per interquartile range with incident tinnitus. Moreover, there is a significant interaction between greenness and genetic predisposition to tinnitus (P < 0.05). This study suggested that residential greenness is negatively associated with tinnitus. Greenness and genetic predisposition to tinnitus are found to have a significant interaction.

Association between residential green spaces and pregnancy outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Residential exposure to greenness has shown positive influences on pregnancy outcomes like birth weight, preterm births, and small to gestational age (SGA) deliveries. We aimed to comprehensively review and investigate these associations by conducting a systematic review with meta-analysis. Relevant studies were retrieved from PubMed, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases before June 2023. Summary effect estimates included birth weight, low birth weight (LBW), preterm births, and SGA which were calculated for 0.1 unit increase in residential greenness exposure. Overall quality of the evidence was examined through Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tool. The review included 31 articles and found a statistically significant increase in birth weight measured at 250 m buffer distance (β = 8.95, 95% CI = 1.63-16.27). Green spaces were also associated with lower odds of LBW (OR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.96-0.98). Residential greenness had positive impacts on pregnancy outcomes that calls for emphasis on urban planning, especially in developing countries.

Physical activity, residential greenness, and cardiac autonomic function

PURPOSE

This population-based study examines the associations between physical activity (PA), residential environmental greenness, and cardiac health measured by resting short-term heart rate variability (HRV).

METHODS

Residential greenness of a birth cohort sample (n = 5433) at 46 years was measured with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) by fixing a 1 km buffer around each participant's home. Daily light PA (LPA), moderate PA (MPA), vigorous PA (VPA), and the combination of both (MVPA) were measured using a wrist-worn accelerometer for 14 days. Resting HRV was measured with a heart rate monitor, and generalized additive modeling (GAM) was used to examine the association between PA, NDVI, and resting HRV.

RESULTS

In nongreen areas, men had less PA at all intensity levels compared to men in green areas. Women had more LPA and total PA and less MPA, MVPA, and VPA in green residential areas compared to nongreen areas. In green residential areas, men had more MPA, MVPA, and VPA than women, whereas women had more LPA than men. GAM showed positive linear associations between LPA, MVPA and HRV in all models.

CONCLUSIONS

Higher LPA and MVPA were significantly associated with increased HRV, irrespective of residential greenness. Greenness was positively associated with PA at all intensity levels in men, whereas in women, a positive association was found for LPA and total PA. A positive relationship of PA with resting HRV and greenness with PA was found. Residential greenness for promoting PA and heart health in adults should be considered in city planning.

Residential greenness for mitigating impacts of extreme heat events on depression and supporting mental health

Background

Residential green spaces (RGS) are a crucial aspect of urban life, which provide residents with a positive living environment both for mental and physical well-being. However, extreme heat events caused by global warming and local urban heat island effects are threatening the public health of rapidly growing populations. This is especially true for mental health. Depression is a mental illness that can be impacted by extreme heat events, i.e., heatwaves.

Objective

This study aimed to investigate the potential for residential green spaces (RGS) to alleviate depression by reducing heat stress sensitivity during extreme heat events.

Methods

We conducted a literature review using scientometric analysis with CiteSpace to summarize existing research on the relationships between RGS, depression, and heatwaves. We proposed a conceptual framework for the relationship between RGS and depression, and that extreme heat events may be an important contributor to depression.

Results

Our review found that RGS can provide ecosystem services that lower ambient temperatures through evaporative cooling, radiation reflection, humidity regulation, and shading. Different types of RGS, i.e., small green spaces, green roofs, green walls, and street trees, have varying cooling capacities. The mechanisms by which RGS alleviate depression during heatwaves involve green space composition, exposure, physical activity, social contacts, and cohesion. And we proposed a conceptual framework for the relationship between RGS and depression, and that extreme heat events may be an important contributor to depression.

Conclusion

We present a multidimensional RGS evaluation roadmap to inform green space design for reducing depression during heatwaves. Establishing RGS multidimensional evaluation can guide future research on leveraging RGS to build resilience against extreme heat and improve public mental health.

Impacts of Urban Green on Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Diseases-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of mortality globally. In particular, ischemic heart diseases (IHDs) and cerebrovascular diseases (CBVDs) represent the main drivers of CVD-related deaths. Many literature examples have assessed the association between CVD risk factors and urban greenness. Urban green (UG) may positively affect physical activity, reduce air and noise pollution, and mitigate the heat island effect, which are known risk factors for CVD morbidity. This systematic review aims to assess the effects of urban green spaces on CVD morbidity and mortality. Peer-reviewed research articles with a quantitative association between urban green exposure variables and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular outcomes were included. Meta-analyses were conducted for each outcome evaluated in at least three comparable studies. Most of the included studies' results highlighted an inverse correlation between exposure to UG and CVD outcomes. Gender differences were found in four studies, with a protective effect of UG only statistically significant in men. Three meta-analyses were performed, showing an overall protective effect of UG on CVD mortality (HR (95% CI) = 0.94 (0.91, 0.97)), IHD mortality (HR (95% CI) = 0.96 (0.93, 0.99)), and CBVD mortality (HR (95% CI) = 0.96 (0.94, 0.97)). The results of this systematic review suggest that exposure to UG may represent a protective factor for CVDs.

PM2.5-Associated Hospitalization Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases in Wuhan: Cases Alleviated by Residential Greenness

PM_2.5, a type of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 μm, is associated with the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), while greenness seems to be associated with better cardiovascular health. We identified 499,336 CVD cases in Wuhan's 74 municipal hospitals between 2017 and 2019. A high-resolution PM_2.5 model and a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) map were established to estimate individual exposures. The time-stratified case-crossover design and conditional logistic regression models were applied to explore the associations between PM_2.5 and CVDs under different levels of environmental factors. Greenness could alleviate PM_2.5-induced hospitalization risks of cardiovascular diseases. Compared with patients in the low-greenness group (ER = 0.99%; 95% CI: 0.71%, 1.28%), patients in the high-greenness group (ER = 0.45%; 95% CI: 0.13%, 0.77%) showed a lower increase in total CVD hospitalizations. After dividing the greenness into quartiles and adding long-term PM_2.5 exposure as a control factor, no significant PM_2.5-associated hospitalization risks of CVD were identified in the greenest areas (quartile 4), whether the long-term PM_2.5 exposure level was high or low. Intriguingly, in the least green areas (quartile 1), the PM_2.5-induced excess risk of CVD hospitalization was 0.58% (95% CI: 0.04%, 1.11%) in the long-term high-level PM_2.5 exposure group, and increased to 1.61% (95% CI: 0.95%, 2.27%) in the long-term low-level PM_2.5 exposure group. In the subgroup analysis, males and participants aged 55-64 years showed more significant increases in the PM_2.5-induced risk of contracting CVDs with a reduction in greenness and fine particle exposure conditions. High residential greenness can greatly alleviate the PM_2.5-induced risk of cardiovascular admission. Living in the areas with long-term low-level PM_2.5 may make people more sensitive to short-term increases in PM_2.5, leading to CVD hospitalization.

Residential greenness attenuated association of long-term air pollution exposure with elevated blood pressure: Findings from polluted areas in Northern China

Background

Evidence on the hypertensive effects of long-term air pollutants exposure are mixed, and the joint hypertensive effects of air pollutants are also unclear. Sparse evidence exists regarding the modifying role of residential greenness in such effects.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted in typically air-polluted areas in northern China. Particulate matter with diameter < 1 μm (PM₁), particulate matter with diameter < 2.5 μm (PM_2.5), particulate matter with diameter < 10 μm (PM₁₀), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and ozone (O₃) were predicted by space-time extremely randomized trees model. We used the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to reflect residential green space. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were examined. We also calculated the pulse pressure (PP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP). Generalized additive model and quantile g-computation were, respectively, conducted to investigate individual and joint effects of air pollutants on blood pressure. Furthermore, beneficial effect of NDVI and its modification effect were explored.

Results

Long-term air pollutants exposure was associated with elevated DBP and MAP. Specifically, we found a 10-μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and SO₂ were associated with 2.36% (95% CI: 0.97, 3.76), 1.51% (95% CI: 0.70, 2.34), and 3.54% (95% CI: 1.55, 5.56) increase in DBP; a 10-μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and SO₂ were associated with 1.84% (95% CI: 0.74, 2.96), 1.17% (95% CI: 0.52, 1.83), and 2.43% (95% CI: 0.71, 4.18) increase in MAP. Air pollutants mixture (one quantile increase) was positively associated with increased values of DBP (8.22%, 95% CI: 5.49, 11.02) and MAP (4.15%, 95% CI: 2.05, 6.30), respectively. These identified harmful effect of air pollutants mainly occurred among these lived with low NDVI values. And participants aged ≥50 years were more susceptible to the harmful effect of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ compared to younger adults.

Conclusions

Our study indicated the harmful effect of long-term exposure to air pollutants and these effects may be modified by living within higher green space place. These evidence suggest increasing residential greenness and air pollution control may have simultaneous effect on decreasing the risk of hypertension.

Association between Residential Greenness and Incidence of Parkinson's Disease: A Population-Based Cohort Study in South Korea

It is widely known that exposure to residential greenness is beneficial for health. However, few studies have analyzed the association between greenery and Parkinson’s disease (PD). We selected 313,355 participants who matched the inclusion criteria from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, followed up from 2007 to 2015. Residential greenness, represented by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), was obtained from satellite measurements. We estimated hazard ratios of PD associated with a 0.1-unit increase in long-term greenness exposure at the district level for the previous 1 year of each year until a censoring/event occurred, using time-varying Cox proportional hazard models, adjusted for individual- and area-level characteristics. During the 2,745,389 person-years of follow-up, 2621(0.8%) participants developed PD. Exposure to higher levels of residential greenness was found to be associated with a decreased risk of PD incidence (21% per 0.1-unit increase, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.74–0.84). In subgroup analyses, stronger protective effects were observed in participants aged over 50 years, females, overweight/obese participants, non-urban residents, non-smokers, alcoholics, and those with comorbidities. Long-term exposure to greenness was beneficial to incident PD, and our findings could aid in the development of public-health strategies.

Air Pollution, Residential Greenness and Metabolic Dysfunction during Early Pregnancy in the INfancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) Cohort

Despite extensive study, the role of air pollution in gestational diabetes remains unclear, and there is limited evidence of the beneficial impact of residential greenness on metabolic dysfunction during pregnancy. We used data from mothers in the Spanish INfancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) Project from 2003–2008. We obtained spatiotemporally resolved estimates of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) exposures in early pregnancy and estimated residential greenness using satellite-based Normal Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) within 100, 300 and 500 m buffers surrounding the mother’s residence. We applied logistic regression models to evaluate associations between each of the three exposures of interest and (a) glucose intolerance and (b) abnormal lipid levels. We found limited evidence of associations between increases in PM_2.5 and NO₂ exposures and the metabolic outcomes. Though not statistically significant, high PM_2.5 exposure (≥25 µg/m³) was associated with increased odds of glucose intolerance (OR = 1.16, 95% CI: 0.82, 1.63) and high cholesterol (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 0.90, 1.44). High NO₂ exposure (≥39.8 µg/m³) was inversely associated with odds of high triglycerides (OR = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.45, 1.08). Whereas NDVI was not associated with glucose intolerance, odds of high triglycerides were increased, although the results were highly imprecise. Results were unchanged when the air pollutant variables were included in the regression models. Given the equivocal findings in our study, additional investigations are needed to assess effects of air pollution and residential greenness on metabolic dysfunction during pregnancy.

Associations of Residential Greenness with Depression and Anxiety in Rural Chinese Adults

Background

Depression and anxiety are top contributors to non-fatal health loss globally. Several studies have indicated the association between residential greenness and mental health.

Method

The participants (n = 27,366) were recruited from four counties in Henan Province, China during 2015–2017. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were evaluated using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 (GAD-2) in the baseline survey. The level of residential greenness during the 3-year period before the baseline survey was assessed using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI). The mixed-effect linear regression model was applied to examine the associations of residential greenness with depression and anxiety.

Results

The results of adjusted models showed that the score of PHQ-2 (Δscore and 95% confidence interval [CI]) decreased by −0.024 (−0.041, −0.006) and −0.022 (−0.038, −0.004) with an interquartile range (IQR) increase in NDVI and EVI within a 1,000-m buffer radius, respectively. The score of GAD-2 (Δscore and 95% CI) decreased by −0.024 (−0.040, −0.006) and −0.028 (−0.044, −0.011), in relation to an IQR increase in NDVI and EVI within a 1,000-m buffer radius, respectively.

Conclusions

A higher level of residential greenness was significantly associated with lower risk of depression and anxiety in rural areas of Henan Province. Improving residential greenness accessibility may help to promote the mental health of rural populations.

Association between residential greenness and cognitive function: analysis of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey

INTRODUCTION

Proximity to vegetated green space has been linked to better physical and mental health. However, the relationship between residential greenness and cognitive function and its decline among older adults is not clear in large cohort studies.

METHODS

Our study used the 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2011 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. We calculated the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using a 500 m radius around participants' residential addresses. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was applied to measure cognitive function. Our study included the cross-sectional analysis using the linear regression, and logistical regression, and also the longitudinal analysis using the linear mixed effects regression, and mixed effects logistic regression. Our study also conducted a sensitivity analysis using the survey-weighted regression. Additionally, our study participants were categorised into those living in areas of positive and negative changes in NDVI in relation to MMSE. All regression models were adjusted for a range of covariates.

RESULTS

Among 38 327 participants at baseline, the mean MMSE score was 21. Annual average NDVI ranged from -0.11 to 0.76. In the cross-sectional analysis, each 0.1-unit increase in NDVI was associated with a 0.23-point increase in MMSE score (95% CI 0.16 to 0.29) in the linear regression, and an OR of 0.94 (95% CI 0.92 to 0.96) of having cognition impairment in the logistic regression. In the second analysis, looking at changes in NDVI and MMSE score, compared with the participants living in areas with an increase in NDVI, those living in areas with a decrease in greenness had an OR of 1.25 (95% CI 1.18 to 1.34) of a decrease in MMSE, and an OR of 0.90 (95% CI 0.84 to 0.96) of an increase in MMSE. In the longitudinal analysis, we found a significantly weak association (coefficient 0.069, 95% CI 0.0048 to 0.13) in the linear mixed effects regression, but not in the mixed effects logistic regression.

CONCLUSION

We found evidence of an association between higher residential greenness and better cognitive function among older adults. Our finding provides insight into neurodegeneration and has implications for preventing dementia and Alzheimer's disease in China.

Effect of Residential Greenness and Nearby Parks on Respiratory and Allergic Diseases among Middle School Adolescents in a Chinese City

Research on the health impacts of green environments has mainly been conducted in developed countries. Differences in the urban forms between China and Western countries make it essential to understand the role of greenspace in Chinese settings. From 2014 to 2015, middle school students (n = 5643) in Suzhou, China were enrolled in a study on the health effect of residential greenness. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and distance to the nearest park were calculated for each home address. Logistic regression was performed to test associations between exposure and self-reported doctor diagnoses of asthma, pneumonia, rhinitis, and eczema, adjusting for important confounders. No statistically significant associations were observed for any seasonal NDVI-based measures. However, the proximity of the participants’ residences to the closest park showed an inverse relationship to reported symptoms. The odds ratios for the furthest quartile compared to the closest quartile based on the distance to the nearest park were 0.58 (95% CI: 0.35, 0.99), 0.70 (95% CI: 0.50, 0.96), 0.92 (95% CI: 0.74, 1.15), 0.97 (95% CI: 0.76, 1.24), 0.86 (95% CI: 0.68, 1.10) for current asthma, ever asthma, ever pneumonia, ever rhinitis, and ever eczema, respectively. These findings focused on a single Chinese city and suggest that exposure to natural vegetation in urban areas may affect health through various pathways.

Ageing at the level of telomeres in association to residential landscape and air pollution at home and work: a review of the current evidence

Studies suggest that leukocyte telomere length is an index of systemic ageing. Here, we discuss telomere length as a marker of biological ageing in relation to residential landscape (greenness), residential air pollution and work-related exposures. Telomere lengths are memories of cumulative oxidative and inflammatory stress, and show to have inverse associations with the risk of non-communicable diseases. For this reason, telomeres are considered as markers of biological ageing. Studies at birth, in children, young adulthood, and elderly show that residential green space, lower traffic exposure and long-term lower exposure to particulate air pollution are associated with longer telomeres. Work-related exposures including exposure to toxic metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and particulate matter are associated with shorter telomeres for a given age. In contrast to chronic exposures, evidence is present of the observation that recent exposure is associated with longer telomeres. Our overview shows that the magnitude of residential and work-related environmental factors on telomere length are often as important as many classical lifestyle factors.
