Abstract
Litchi chinensis Sonn. is an important evergreen fruit crop cultivated in the tropical and subtropical regions. The edible portion of litchi fruit is the aril, which contains a high concentration of sucrose, glucose, and fructose. In this study, we review various aspects of sugar transport, metabolism, and signaling during fruit development in litchi. We begin by detailing the sugar transport and accumulation during aril development, and the biosynthesis of quebrachitol as a transportable photosynthate is discussed. We then document sugar metabolism in litchi fruit. We focus on the links between sugar signaling and seed development as well as fruit abscission. Finally, we outline future directions for research on sugar metabolism and signaling to improve fruit yield and quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The GRAS gene family plays crucial roles in multiple biological processes of plant growth, including seed development, which is related to seedless traits of litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.). However, it hasn't been fully identified and analyzed in litchi, an economic fruit tree cultivated in subtropical regions. RESULTS In this study, 48 LcGRAS proteins were identified and termed according to their chromosomal location. LcGRAS proteins can be categorized into 14 subfamilies through phylogenetic analysis. Gene structure and conserved domain analysis revealed that different subfamilies harbored various motif patterns, suggesting their functional diversity. Synteny analysis revealed that the expansion of the GRAS family in litchi may be driven by their tandem and segmental duplication. After comprehensively analysing degradome data, we found that four LcGRAS genes belong to HAM subfamily were regulated via miR171-mediated degradation. The various expression patterns of LcGRAS genes in different tissues uncovered they were involved in different biological processes. Moreover, the different temporal expression profiles of LcGRAS genes between abortive and bold seed indicated some of them were involved in maintaining the normal development of the seed. CONCLUSION Our study provides comprehensive analyses on GRAS family members in litchi, insight into a better understanding of the roles of GRAS in litchi development, and lays the foundation for further investigations on litchi seed development.

Abstract
Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures often results in a relatively low flowering rate in litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) trees with younger leaves. This study aimed to verify the impact of stem girdling on litchi flowering by identifying and characterizing the induced metabolic changes. After a 60 day exposure to cold treatment at 15 °C/10 °C (12 h/12 h), the flowering rate of the girdled trees was 100%, while that of the non-girdled trees was 20%, indicating that girdling improved litchi flowering at its turning stage. The metabolic profiles of litchi leaves with and without stem girdling during floral induction were compared and 505 metabolites potentially associated with litchi flowering were detected. Most metabolites were involved in the metabolism of starch and sucrose, fatty acid, and phenylpyruvic acid. The metabolic pathways concerned with the biosynthesis of epinephrine, sucrose, and d-maltose were induced in leaves after girdling treatment. The level of galactitol, phenylpyruvic acid, acetyl-CoA, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and 13-HPOT biosynthesis remained stable in the leaves from girdled trees but changed drastically in the leaves from non-girdled trees. In addition, 379 metabolites concerning flowering rate were characterized. Metabolism pathways of starch and sucrose, galactose, and linoleic acid are of great significance to the flowering of litchi. Linoleic acid exhibited the most significant variations between girdled trees and non-girdled trees with fold changes of up to 13.62. These results contribute to understanding the biological mechanism of litchi floral induction and the metabolic changes after stem girdling.

Abstract
Litchi fruit has high commercial value on the international market, but senesces rapidly after harvest. We used weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and degradome technology to investigate the molecular mechanisms of melatonin-mediated delay of litchi fruit senescence through application of exogenous melatonin and p-chlorophenylalanine (p-CPA, an inhibitor of melatonin biosynthesis) treatments. Results demonstrated that exogenous melatonin treatment delayed litchi fruit senescence while p-CPA accelerated senescence. Coupled analyses of transcriptome and physiological parameters of litchi fruit provided the correlation of network modules with dynamic changes in browning index during storage. Additionally, we found that microRNAs (miR858 and miR160a) and their targets were actively involved in melatonin-mediated delay of litchi fruit senescence. Melatonin treatment decreased abscisic acid (ABA) content but increased PP2C and F-box expression levels, suggesting the involvement of ABA signaling in melatonin-mediated antisenescence. The transcriptions of ZAT, NAC and DREB1 were activated by melatonin treatment. Moreover, the major functional genes involved in histone methylation, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism, energy production, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and cell death were identified in the melatonin-inhibited litchi pericarp browning. Taken together, we first constructed the global map of the important regulators and pathways to delay litchi senescence and pericarp browning mediated by melatonin.

Abstract
Elucidating the biochemical and molecular basis of premature abscission in fruit crops should help develop strategies to enhance fruit set and yield. Here, we report that LcERF2 contributes to differential abscission rates and responses to ethylene in Litchi chinensis (litchi). Reduced LcERF2 expression in litchi was observed to reduce fruit abscission, concurrent with enhanced pedicel growth and increased levels of hexoses, particularly galactose, as well as pectin abundance in the cell wall. Ecoptic expression of LcERF2 in Arabidopsis thaliana caused enhanced petal abscission, together with retarded plant growth and reduced pedicel galactose and pectin contents. Transcriptome analysis indicated that LcERF2 modulates the expression of genes involved in cell wall modification. Yeast one-hybrid, dual-luciferase reporter and electrophoretic mobility shift assays all demonstrated that a UDP-glucose-4-epimerase gene (LcUGE) was the direct downstream target of LcERF2. This result was further supported by a significant reduction in the expression of the A. thaliana homolog AtUGE2-4 in response to LcERF2 overexpression. Significantly reduced pedicel diameter and enhanced litchi fruit abscission were observed in response to LcUGE silencing. We conclude that LcERF2 mediates fruit abscission by orchestrating cell wall metabolism, and thus pedicel growth, in part by repressing the expression of LcUGE.

Abstract
Cellulases play important roles in the shedding of plant organs; however, little is yet known about the functions of cellulase genes during the process of organ abscission. Abnormal fruitlet abscission is a serious problem in the production of litchi (Litchi chinensis), an economically important fruit widely grown in South Asia. In this study, two abscission-accelerating treatments (carbohydrate stress and application of ethephon) were evaluated in litchi fruitlets. Cell wall degradation and cell separation were clearly observed in the abscission zones of treated fruitlets, consistent with enhanced cellulase activities and reduced cellulose contents. The expression of two cellulase genes (LcCEL2 and LcCEL8) was strongly associated with abscission. Floral organs of transgenic Arabidopsis overexpressing LcCEL2 or LcCEL8 showed remarkably precocious abscission. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays and transient expression experiments demonstrated that a novel homeodomain-leucine zipper transcription factor, LcHB2, could directly bind to and activate HD-binding cis-elements in the LcCEL2 and LcCEL8 promoters. Our results provide new information regarding the transcriptional regulation of the cellulase genes responsible for cell wall degradation and cell separation during plant organ shedding, and raise the possibility of future manipulation of litchi fruitlet abscission by modulation of the activities of these two cellulases.

Abstract
Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) is a subtropical fruit known for its attractive red pericarp color, semi-translucent white aril and unique flavor and aroma. Rapid post-harvest pericarp browning strictly limits litchi fruit marketing. In the current research, we hypothesized that modification of litchi fruit pericarp anatomy by hormone application may reduce fruit susceptibility to post-harvest pericarp browning. In this context, we hypothesized that cytokinin treatment, known to induce cell division, may yield fruit with thicker pericarp and reduced susceptibility for fruit surface micro-crack formation, water loss and post-harvest pericarp browning. Exogenous cytokinin treatment was applied at different stages along the course of litchi fruit development and the effect on fruit pericarp anatomy, fruit maturation and postharvest pericarp browning was investigated. Interestingly, cytokinin treatment, applied 4 weeks after full female bloom (WFB), during the phase of pericarp cell division, led to mature fruit with thicker pericarp, reduced rate of post-harvest water loss and reduced susceptibility to post-harvest pericarp browning, as compared to non-treated control fruit. Histological sections ascribe the difference in pericarp anatomy to increased cell proliferation in the parenchymatic tissue and the highly-lignified brachysclereid cell layer. In contrast, exogenous cytokinin treatment applied 7 WFB, following the phase of pericarp cell division, significantly increased epidermal-cell proliferation but had no significant effect on overall fruit pericarp thickness and only minor affect on post-harvest water loss or pericarp browning. Interestingly, the late cytokinin treatment also significantly postponed fruit maturation-associated anthocyanin accumulation and chlorophyll degradation, as previously reported, but had no effect on other parameters of fruit maturation, like total soluble sugars and total titratable acids typically modified during aril maturation. In conclusion, exogenous cytokinin treatment at different stages in fruit development differentially modifies litchi fruit pericarp anatomy by induction of cell-type specific cell proliferation. Early cytokinin treatment during the phase of pericarp cell division may prolong litchi fruit storage by reducing fruit susceptibility to post-harvest water loss and pericarp browning.

Abstract
During litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) fruit ripening, two major physiological changes, degreening (Chl degradation) and pigmentation (anthocyanin biosynthesis), are visually apparent. However, the specific factor triggering this important transition is still unclear. In the present study, we found that endogenous ABA content increased sharply when Chl breakdown was initiated and the ABA level peaked just before the onset of anthocyanin accumulation, suggesting that ABA plays an important role during litchi fruit pigmentation. We characterized three ABSCISIC ACID RESPONSE ELEMENT-BINDING FACTORs (LcABF1/2/3) belonging to group A of the basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors previously shown to be involved in ABA signaling under abiotic stress. LcABF1 transcripts increased at the onset of Chl degradation, and the expression of LcABF3 accumulated in parallel with anthocyanin biosynthesis. In addition, dual luciferase and yeast one-hybrid assays indicated that LcABF1/2 recognized ABA-responsive elements in the promoter region of Chl degradation-related genes (PAO and SGR), while LcABF2/3 bound the promoter region of LcMYB1 and anthocyanin biosynthesis-related structural genes. Indeed, Nicotiana benthamiana leaves transiently expressing LcABF1/2 showed a senescence phenomenon with Chl degradation, and LcABF3 overexpression increased the accumulation of anthocyanin via activation of LcMYB1, which is the key determinant of anthocyanin biosynthesis. These data indicate that LcABF1/2/3 are important transcriptional regulators of ABA-dependent litchi fruit ripening involved in both Chl degradation and anthocyanin biosynthesis.

Melatonin acts as a crucial signaling and antioxidant molecule with multiple physiological functions in organisms. To explore effects of exogenous melatonin on postharvest browning and its possible mechanisms in litchi fruit, 'Ziniangxi' litchi fruits were treated with an aqueous solution of melatonin at 0.4 mM and then stored at 25 °C for 8 days. The results revealed that melatonin strongly suppressed pericarp browning and delayed discoloration during storage. Melatonin treatment reduced relative membrane-leakage rate and inhibited the generation of superoxide radicals (O2-·), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and malondialdehyde (MDA). Melatonin treatment markedly promoted the accumulation of endogenous melatonin; delayed loss of total phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanins; and enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6), ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11), and glutathione reductase (GR, EC 1.6.4.2). By contrast, the activities of browning-related enzymes including polyphenoloxidase (PPO, EC 1.10.3.1) and peroxidase (POD, EC 1.11.1.7) were reduced. In addition, melatonin treatment up-regulated the expression of four genes encoding enzymes for repair of oxidized proteins, including LcMsrA1, LcMsrA2, LcMsrB1, and LcMsB2. These findings indicate that the delay of pericarp browning and senescence by melatonin in harvested litchi fruit could be attributed to the maintenance of redox homeostasis by the improvement of the antioxidant capacity and modulation of the repair of oxidatively damaged proteins.

Abstract
In Arabidopsis, treating shoots with uniconazole can result in enhanced primary root elongation and bolting delay. Uniconazole spraying has become an important cultivation technique in controlling the flowering and improving the fruit-setting of litchi. However, the mechanism by which uniconazole regulates the complicated developmental processes in litchi remains unclear. This study aimed to determine which signal pathways and genes drive the responses of litchi inflorescences to uniconazole treatment. We monitored the transcriptional activity in inflorescences after uniconazole treatment by Illumina sequencing technology. The global expression profiles of uniconazole-treated litchi inflorescences were compared with those of the control, and 4051 differentially expressed genes were isolated. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis indicated that the plant hormone signal transduction pathway served key functions in the flower developmental stage under uniconazole treatment. Basing on the transcriptional analysis of genes involved in flower development, we hypothesized that uniconazole treatment increases the ratio of female flowers by activating the transcription of pistil-related genes. This phenomenon increases opportunities for pollination and fertilization, thereby enhancing the fruit-bearing rate. In addition, uniconazole treatment regulates the expression of unigenes involved in numerous transcription factor families, especially the bHLH and WRKY families. These findings suggest that the uniconazole-induced morphological changes in litchi inflorescences are related to the control of hormone signaling, the regulation of flowering genes, and the expression levels of various transcription factors. This study provides comprehensive inflorescence transcriptome data to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the response of litchi flowers to uniconazole treatment and enumerates possible candidate genes that can be used to guide future research in controlling litchi flowering.

Abstract
Litchi (Litchi chinensis) is an important subtropical evergreen fruit crop with high commercial value due to its high nutritional values and favorable tastes. However, irregular bearing attributed to unstable flowering is a major ongoing problem for litchi producers. There is a need to better understand the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying the reproductive process in litchi. In a previous study, our laboratory had analyzed the transcriptome of litchi leaves before and after low-temperature treatment with RNA-seq technology. Herein, we demonstrated that litchi flowering was induced by low-temperature and identified two FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) homologue genes named LcFT1 and LcFT2, respectively. We found that low-temperature could only induce LcFT1 expression in leaves, but could not induce LcFT2 expression. Heterologous expression of LcFT1 in transgenic tobacco and Arabidopsis plants induced their precocious flowering. These results indicate that LcFT1 plays a pivotal role in litchi floral induction by low-temperature. In addition, we found that two types of LcFT1 promoter existed in different litchi cultivars. The LcFT1 promoters in the early-flowering cultivars belonged to one type whereas LcFT1 promoters in the late-flowering belonged to another one. LcFT1 promoter in the early-flowering cultivars was more sensitive to low-temperature than that of the late-flowering cultivars was, which may be caused by the different cis-acting elements, including MYC, MYB, ABRE, and WRKY cis-acting elements, which were found to be present in the LcFT1 promoter sequences of the early-flowering cultivars. This difference may be responsible for the different requirements of low-temperature for floral induction in the early- and late-flowering cultivars of litchi. Taken together, the difference in LcFT1 promoter sequences may be one of the leading cause for the natural variation of flowering timing in different litchi cultivars. Our study has provided valuable genetic basis for cross-breeding of litchi cultivars to generate new litchi cultivars for overcoming the problem of unstable flowering for litchi producers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Litchi has a high commercial value due to its bright color and rich nutrients. However, it deteriorates with the pericarp turning brown within 1-2 days after harvest. The factors that mediate litchi fruit senescence are complicated. MicroRNAs act as negative regulators involved in almost every physiological process. To understand the mechanism of litchi fruit senescence and pericarp browning at the miRNA level, five small RNA libraries and a degradome library prepared from the pericarp of litchi fruit subjected to ambient storage and post-cold storage shelf life were sequenced. RESULTS By aligning the sRNA reads onto the litchi unigene assembly, 296 miRNAs belonging to 49 known miRNA families were first identified from litchi. In addition, 11 litchi-specific miRNAs were identified. Among these, 167 known miRNAs were identified to cleave 197 targets, and three litchi-specific miRNAs were found to have five targets. Through combined analysis of stem-loop quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and transcriptome profiling, 14 miRNA-target pairs were found to be actively involved in litchi fruit senescence-related processes, including energy regulation, anthocyanin metabolism, hormone signaling, and pathogen-infection defense. CONCLUSIONS A network of miRNA-targets that regulate litchi fruit senescence has been proposed, revealing the miRNA-mediated regulation in senescent litchi fruit. This will aid in developing new strategies to postpone the senescence of litchi fruit and other horticultural products.

Abstract
Orchard understory represents an important component of the orchards, performing numerous functions related to soil quality, water relations and microclimate, but little attention has been paid on its effect on soil C sequestration. In the face of global climate change, fruit producers also require techniques that increase carbon (C) sequestration in a cost-effective manner. Here we present a case study to compare the effects of understory management (sod culture vs. clean tillage) on soil C sequestration in four subtropical orchards. The results of a 10-year study indicated that the maintenance of sod significantly enhanced the soil C stock in the top 1 m of orchard soils. Relative to clean tillage, sod culture increased annual soil C sequestration by 2.85 t C ha-1, suggesting that understory management based on sod culture offers promising potential for soil carbon sequestration. Considering that China has the largest area of orchards in the world and that few of these orchards currently have sod understories, the establishment and maintenance of sod in orchards can help China increase C sequestration and greatly contribute to achieving CO2 reduction targets at a regional scale and potentially at a national scale.

Abstract
Sucrose metabolism enzymes, including invertase (EC 3.2.1.26), sucrose synthase (SS, EC 2.4.1.13), and sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS, EC 2.4.1.14), are key factors that determine fruit sugar accumulation and composition. Sugar concentration and sugar composition in the arils of 42 litchi cultivars were determined at maturity. The cultivars were grouped into three types according to their hexose/sucrose ratio. Five cultivars of each type were selected to monitor the activities and gene expressions of enzymes related to sucrose metabolism. Pattern changes in the arils of four cultivars with different sugar concentrations and compositions were traced from around 40 d after anthesis to full maturity. Highly significant positive correlations were observed between hexose/sucrose ratios and the activities and expression levels of soluble acid invertase (SAI) and SS among the 15 cultivars tested. The increase in hexose/sucrose ratio was accompanied by enhanced acid invertase (AI) and SS activities and the expression of their genes in Feizixiao (FZX) and Heiye (HY). By contrast, no significant correlation was observed between hexose/sucrose ratio and SPS. These results indicate that the sugar composition in litchi aril depends mainly on the sucrose cleavage enzymes AI and SS and not on the sucrose synthetic enzyme SPS. The cultivar Nuomici, which had the highest sugar content among the cultivars studied, displayed significantly lower activities of cell wall acid invertase, SAI, neutral invertase, and SS and lower expression levels of SAI and SS compared with HY, the cultivar with the lowest sugar content. The inconsistent patterns of sugar accumulation and activities and expressions of sucrose metabolism enzymes suggest that these sucrose metabolism enzymes are not necessarily related to sugar accumulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have demonstrated that cellular energy is a key factor switching on ripening and senescence of fruit. However, the factors that influence fruit energy status remain largely unknown. RESULTS HPLC profiling showed that ATP abundance increased significantly in developing preharvest litchi fruit and was strongly correlated with fruit fresh weight. In contrast, ATP levels declined significantly during postharvest fruit senescence and were correlated with the decrease in the proportion of edible fruit. The five gene transcripts isolated from the litchi fruit pericarp were highly expressed in vegetative tissues and peaked at 70 days after flowering (DAF) consistent with fruit ADP concentrations, except for uncoupling mitochondrial protein 1 (UCP1), which was predominantly expressed in the root, and ATP synthase beta subunit (AtpB), which was up-regulated significantly before harvest and peaked 2 days after storage. These results indicated that the color-breaker stage at 70 DAF and 2 days after storage may be key turning points in fruit energy metabolism. Transcript abundance of alternative oxidase 1 (AOX1) increased after 2 days of storage to significantly higher levels than those of LcAtpB, and was down-regulated significantly by exogenous ATP. ATP supplementation had no significant effect on transcript abundance of ADP/ATP carrier 1 (AAC1) and slowed the changes in sucrose non-fermenting-1-related kinase 2 (SnRK2) expression, but maintained ATP and energy charge levels, which were correlated with delayed senescence. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that senescence of litchi fruit is closely related with energy. A surge of LcAtpB expression marked the beginning of fruit senescence. The findings may provide a new strategy to extend fruit shelf life by regulating its energy level.

Abstract
The phenolic profiles and antioxidant activity of litchi pulp of 13 varieties were investigated. The free, bound and total phenolic contents were 66.17-226.03, 11.18-40.54, and 101.51-259.18 mg of gallic acid equivalents/100 g, respectively. The free, bound and total flavonoid contents were 16.68-110.33, 10.48-22.75, and 39.43-129.86 mg of catechin equivalents/100 g, respectively. Free phenolics and flavonoids contributed averagely 80.1% and 75% to their total contents, respectively. Six individual phenolics (gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, (+)-catechin, caffeic acid, (-)-epicatechin, and rutin) were detected in litchi pulp by HPLC. The contents of each compound in free and bound fractions were determined. Significant varietal discrepancy in antioxidant activity was also found by FRAP and DPPH scavenging capacity methods. Antioxidant activity was significantly correlated with phenolic and flavonoid contents. Thus, phenolics and flavonoids exist mainly in the free form in litchi pulp. There were significant varietal differences in phytochemical contents and antioxidant activity of litchi pulp.

Abstract
Litchi is a famous tropical and subtropical fruit originated in South China. Guangdong is one of the most important litchi production areas in China. Two hundred and eight soil samples were collected in litchi orchards after harvesting the fruit, in which nine often-used pesticides including metalaxyl, mancozeb, carbendazim, deltamethrin, cypermethrin, cyhalothrin, dipterex, dimethoate and dichlorvos were detected. The results showed that the detectable rates of various pesticides were ranked cypermethrin (59.1%) > carbendazim (51.0%) > mancozeb (11.1%) > metalaxyl (6.7%) > cyhalothrin (3.4%). Dimethoate and dichlorvos were detectable in few soil samples, and deltamethrin and dipterex were undetectable in all samples. The percentages of soil samples where different pesticides could be detected in one sample followed the order: one pesticide detectable (40.4%) > two pesticides simultaneously detectable (31.3%) > pesticide undetectable (18.8%) > three pesticides simultaneously detectable (8.2%) > four pesticides simultaneously detectable (1.4%). The concentrations of mancozeb in detectable samples averaged 39.05 microg x kg(-1), and that of cypermethrin was 7.83 microg x kg(-1). The mean concentrations of the other five pesticides ranged from 0.19 microg x kg(-1) to 1.65 microg x kg(-1). Totally, the pesticide residue status in litchi orchards in Guangdong was venial.

Abstract
Based on the 1951-2006 climatic observation data from 224 meteorological stations in South China (Guangdong Province, Guangxi Autonomous Region, and Fujian Province) and the historical information about the chilling injury losses of banana and litchi, the accumulated harmful chilling for the processes with minimum daily temperature < or = 5.0 degrees C and more than 3 days was used to indicate the climatic risk of chilling injury during the whole growth season, and an integrated climatic index with the background of climate change was constructed. The maps of geographical distribution of climatic risk probability for each grade chilling injury, and of integrated climatic risk zoning for banana and litchi's chilling injury were drawn, and the spatial variation of climatic risk for banana and litchi's chilling injury was commented. The results indicated that in the study area, climate warming might lead to the decrease of cold resistance of banana and litchi, which could increase the disaster risk of chilling injury. The geographical distribution of climatic risk probability for banana and litchi's chilling injury showed a zonal pattern. According to the integrated climatic risk index, the banana and litchi's chilling injury region was divided into three risk types, i.e., high risk, moderate risk, and low risk, which provided an important basis for the adjustment of agricultural production structure.

Abstract
Cryopreservation of embryogenic cultures induced from leaves of mature phase trees of Litchi chinensis Sonn. was performed following a vitrification method. Vitrification solution (PVS2) was utilized at two temperatures: 0 degree C and 25 degree C. Post-treatment survival percentages and regrowth rates of the cultures were higher when the PVS2 solution was at 0 degree C. All samples cryopreserved with PVS2 at 0 degree C survived; their regrowth rate after eight weeks on semi-solid maintenance medium was the same as non-treated controls. Cryopreservation suppressed somatic embryo development; the number of somatic embryos derived from cryopreserved cultures was less than the number obtained from the controls. Desiccation during the PVS2 treatment had no effect on reversal of hyperhydric embryogenic cultures.

Abstract
An investigation on the community structure and dynamics of litchi pests and their natural enemies in constructed Litchi chinensis-Desmodium intortum complex plant ecosystem and single L. chinensis ecosystem showed that the total amount of litchi pests in the complex plant ecosystem was 61.27% of that in the single ecosystem in whole year, and only 50.45% in May, the key time for fruit development, which suggested that there was an interaction between D. intortum and L. chinensis. D. intortum and L. chinensis had a few common pests, but many common natural enemies. D. intortum florescence in winter provided shelter and substitutive food for the natural enemies of pests to survive in the extreme environmental conditions in winter. L. chinensis florescence was on the heel of D. intortum florescence, which provided better conditions for the natural enemies to survive and multiply. During florescence and fruit development stages of L. chinensis (from March to June), the predator/prey ratio in complex plant system was 4.22, 2.34, 2.2 and 20.63 times of that in single plant system in March, April, May and June, respectively, indicating the good control effect on pests of L. chinensis.

Abstract
Changes in gas exchange with leaf age and fruit growth were determined in lychee trees (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) growing in subtropical Queensland (27 degrees S). Leaves expanded in a sigmoid pattern over 50 days during spring, with net CO2 assimilation (A) increasing from -4.1 +/- 0.9 to 8.3 +/- 0.5 micromol m-2 s-1 as the leaves changed from soft and red, to soft and light green, to hard and dark green. Over the same period, dark respiration (Rd) decreased from 5.0 +/- 0.8 to 2.0 +/- 0.1 micromol CO2 m-2 s-1. Net CO2 assimilation was above zero about 30 days after leaf emergence or when the leaves were half fully expanded. Chlorophyll concentrations increased from 0.7 +/- 0.2 mg g-1 in young red leaves to 10.3 +/- 0.7 mg g-1 in dark green leaves, along with stomatal conductance (gs, from 0.16 +/- 0.09 to 0.47 +/- 0.17 mol H2O m-2 s-1). Fruit growth was sigmoidal, with maximum values of fresh mass (29 g), dry mass (6 g) and fruit surface area (39 cm2) occurring 97 to 115 days after fruit set. Fruit CO2 exchange in the light (Rl) and dark (Rd) decreased from fruit set to fruit maturity, whether expressed on a surface area (10 to 3 micromol CO2 m-2 s-1 and 20 to 3 micromol CO2 m-2 s-1, respectively) or on a dry mass basis (24 to 2 nmol CO2 g-1 s-1 and 33 to 2 nmol CO2 g-1 s-1, respectively). Photosynthesis never exceeded respiration, however, the difference between Rl and Rd was greatest in young green fruit (4 to 8 micromol CO2 m-2 s-1). About 90% of the carbon required for fruit growth was accounted for in the dry matter of the fruit, with the remainder required for respiration. Fruit photosynthesis contributed about 3% of the total carbon requirement of the fruit over the season. Fruit growth was mainly dependent on CO2 assimilation in recently expanded dark green leaves.

Abstract
Shoot growth, chlorophyll concentrations, gas exchange and starch concentrations were studied in lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) seedlings of cultivar "Wai Chee" grown in a heated greenhouse at Nambour in subtropical Australia (27 degrees S). We also examined the effects of shoot defoliation and root pruning on leaf expansion. Shoot growth showed a rhythmic cycle under constant greenhouse conditions, with a mean duration of flushing of 20 days and an interval of 10 days over three cycles. Shoots and leaves expanded in a sigmoidal pattern to about 80 mm and 500 cm(2), respectively, for each flush. Starch concentrations of the lower stem and roots decreased as the young red leaves expanded, and increased as the fully expanded leaves turned dark green. Chlorophyll concentrations and net CO(2) assimilation rate were highest in the fully expanded dark green leaves. Removing 50% of the area of each fully expanded leaf had little effect on the expansion of younger leaves, but total biomass of defoliated plants was only 60% of that of controls. In contrast, removing half the roots just before bud swelling reduced final leaf area by 80%. We conclude that the young shoot has relatively low rates of photoassimilation until the leaves are fully expanded and dark green, and depends on assimilates from elsewhere in the plant. During leaf expansion, translocation of assimilates to the shoot occurred at the expense of the roots.
