Abstract
One of the major public health problems is drug resistance in parasitic diseases. It is therefore important to find new active ingredients to combat parasites. Herbal products such as essential oils (EOs) may show promise in treating infections caused by gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs). This study investigated the in vitro anthelmintic activity of the EOs of Lavandula angustifolia and Quercus infectoria against Marshallagia marshalli. The in vitro study was based on an egg hatch test (EHT), adult and larval motility inhibition tests, DNA damage, and several biomarkers of oxidative/nitrosative stress, including superoxide dismutase [SOD], catalase [CAT], and glutathione peroxidase [GSH -Px], protein carbonylation [PCO], malondialdehyde [MDA], total antioxidant status [TAS], and nitric oxide levels [NO]. Different concentrations of Lavandula angustifolia and Quercus infectoria EOs (1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 mg/ml) were used to determine the anthelmintic effect on three stages of the life cycle of M. marshalli, i.e. eggs, larvae and adult parasites, for 24 hr. The results showed that EOs of L. angustifolia and Q. infectoria play an important role as anthelmintics. These essential oils significantly reduced the egg hatching and motility of larval and adult worms. This anthelmintic effect is dependent on concentration and time. Furthermore, the EOs of L. angustifolia and Q. infectoria caused oxidative/nitrosative stress (reduced SOD, GSH-Px and CAT and increased MDA, PCO and NO) and DNA damage, thereby providing significant antihelminthic effects. Based on the results, it seems that the EOs extracted from L. angustifolia and Q. infectoria may be effective in the control and treatment of M. marshalli infections. Further research is needed to investigate their potential for in vivo use in the treatment of parasitic infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infect more than a quarter of the world's human population. In the absence of vaccines for most animal and human gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), treatment of infections primarily relies on anthelmintic drugs, while resistance is a growing threat. Therefore, there is a need to find alternatives to current anthelmintic drugs, especially those with novel modes of action. The present work aimed to study the composition and anthelmintic activity of Combretum mucronatum leaf extract (CMLE) by phytochemical analysis and larval migration inhibition assays, respectively. METHODS Combretum mucronatum leaves were defatted with petroleum ether and the residue was extracted by ethanol/water (1/1) followed by freeze-drying. The proanthocyanidins and flavonoids were characterized by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). To evaluate the inhibitory activity of this extract, larval migration assays with STH and GIN were performed. For this purpose, infective larvae of the helminths were, if necessary, exsheathed (Ancylostoma caninum, GIN) and incubated with different concentrations of CMLE. RESULTS CMLE was found to be rich in flavonoids and proanthocyanidins; catechin and epicatechin were therefore quantified for standardization of the extract. Data indicate that CMLE had a significant effect on larval migration. The effect was dose-dependent and higher concentrations (1000 µg/mL) exerted significantly higher larvicidal effect (P < 0.001) compared with the negative control (1% dimethyl sulfoxide, DMSO) and lower concentrations (≤ 100 µg/ml). Infective larvae of Ascaris suum [half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) = 5.5 µg/mL], Trichuris suis (IC50 = 7.4 µg/mL), and A. caninum (IC50 = 18.9 µg/mL) were more sensitive to CMLE than that of Toxocara canis (IC50 = 310.0 µg/mL), while infective larvae of Toxocara cati were largely unaffected (IC50 > 1000 µg/mL). Likewise, CMLE was active against most infective larvae of soil-transmitted ruminant GIN, except for Cooperia punctata. Trichostrongylus colubriformis was most sensitive to CMLE (IC50 = 2.1 µg/mL) followed by Cooperia oncophora (IC50 = 27.6 µg/mL), Ostertagia ostertagi (IC50 = 48.5 µg/mL), Trichostrongylus axei (IC50 = 54.7 µg/mL), Haemonchus contortus (IC50 = 145.6 µg/mL), and Cooperia curticei (IC50 = 156.6 µg/mL). CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that CMLE exhibits promising anthelmintic properties against infective larvae of a large variety of soil-transmitted nematodes.

Abstract
Ecological niche models (ENMs) serve as valuable tools in assessing the potential species distribution, identifying crucial habitat components for species associations, and facilitating conservation efforts. The current study aimed to investigate the gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) infection in sheep, predict and analyze their ecological niches and ranges, and identify the key bioclimatic variables influencing their distribution across three distinct climatic regions in Iran. In a cross-sectional study, a total of 2140 fecal samples were collected from semi-arid (n = 800), arid (n = 500), and humid-subtropical (n = 840) climates in East Azerbaijan, Kerman, and Guilan provinces, respectively. The flotation method was employed to assess stool samples, whereby the fecal egg count (the number of parasite eggs per gram [EPG]) was ascertained for each individual specimen. Employing a presence-only approach, the multi-scale maximum entropy (MaxEnt) method was used to model GINs' habitat suitability using 93 selected points/locations. The findings revealed that Guilan (34.2%) and East Azerbaijan (19.62%) exhibited the utmost proportion of Strongyle-type eggs. East Azerbaijan province also displayed the highest proportion of Marshallagia and Nematodirus, respectively (approximately 40% and 27%), followed by Guilan and Kerman provinces, while Kerman province had the highest proportion of Trichuris (approximately 15%). Ecological niche modeling revealed that the precipitation of the driest quarter (Bio17) exerted the most significant influence on Marshallagia, Nematodirus, Trichuris, and ُSُُُtrongyle-type eggs' presence in East Azerbaijan and Kerman provinces. For Guilan province, the most influential factor defining habitat suitability for Strongyle-type eggs, Marshallagia, and Nematodirus was increasing slope. Additionally, the distribution of Trichuris was most affected by the variable Bio2 in Guilan province. The study highlights the response of GINs to climate drivers in highly suitable regions, providing insights into ecologically favorable areas for GINs. In conclusion, this study provides a better understanding of GINs and the environmental factors influencing their transmission dynamics.

Abstract
This work discusses and demonstrates the novel use of multivariate analysis and data dimensionality reduction techniques to handle the variety and complexity of data generated in efficacy trials for the development of a prototype vaccine to protect sheep against the Teladorsagia circumcincta nematode. A curated collection of data dimension reduction and visualisation techniques, in conjunction with sensible statistical modelling and testing which explicitly model key features of the data, offers a synthetic view of the relationships between the multiple biological parameters measured. New biological insight is gained into the patterns and associations involving antigen-specific antibody levels, antibody avidity and parasitological parameters of efficacy that is not achievable by standard statistical practice in the field. This approach can therefore be used to guide vaccine refinement and simplification through identifying the most immunologically relevant antigens, and it can be analogously implemented for similar studies in other areas. To facilitate this, the associated data and computer codes written for the R open system for statistical computing are made freely available.

Abstract
Resistance to the benzimidazole and macrocyclic lactone anthelmintics is widespread in Cooperia spp. on cattle farms in New Zealand. Since this was first documented in 2006 little has changed in cattle farming systems except for the widespread use of levamisole to control Cooperia spp. in young cattle (i.e., parasite control has maintained an almost total reliance on use of anthelmintics). Here we report the emergence of simultaneous resistance to the benzimidazole, macrocyclic lactone and levamisole anthelmintics in Cooperia spp. and in Ostertagia spp. Anthelmintic efficacy against nematode parasites of cattle was investigated on four commercial farms following reports of poor animal growth rates and welfare, and positive faecal egg counts, despite routine treatment with combination anthelmintics, which included levamisole. Faecal egg count reduction tests involved 15 animals per treatment group, individual egg counts (paired samples) conducted pre- and post-treatment, with eggs counted to ≤ 15 eggs per g faeces and larval cultures for morphological identification. Actives tested varied between farms but always included levamisole alone and several combination products containing levamisole. Of the 20 tests conducted (i.e., 5 products on each of 4 farms) only 3 exceeded 90% efficacy against Cooperia spp. even though 8 of the products tested were combinations containing levamisole and at least one other broad-spectrum anthelmintic. Levamisole used alone achieved efficacies between 44% and 71% against Cooperia spp. across the four trials. The only product to exceed 95% efficacy against Cooperia spp. was a combination of monepantel + abamectin which was 100% effective against all parasites. Resistance to oxfendazole in Ostertagia spp. was indicated on 3 farms, while on one farm efficacy of all the tested products was ≤75% against this parasite. All the farms involved in this study were farming intensive cattle operations with an almost total reliance on anthelmintics to control parasitism. The results clearly demonstrate the emergence of simultaneous resistance to oxfendazole, levamisole and the macrocyclic lactone anthelmintics. Despite years of advice and recommendations to change farming practices away from intensive monocultures, many farmers have continued with the practice, and some are now faced with the very real possibility of being unable to control cattle parasites on their farms.

Abstract
A new species of Oswaldocruzia Travassos, 1917 (Nematoda, Molineidae), parasite of Leptodactylus macrosternum Miranda-Ribeiro, 1926 (Anura: Leptodactylidae), from Caatinga morphoclimatic domain, Brazil, is described based on morphological and molecular data. Oswaldocruzia franciscoensis n. sp. is characterised by an anterior extremity with a cephalic vesicle divided into two portions, a body covered by cuticular longitudinal ridges, and cervical alae. Males of the new species have caudal bursa of type I with a 2-1-2 pattern, spicules divided into a shoe, bifurcated fork, and blade with two unequal branches, in which the longer branch bifurcates at its distal portion end and the smaller branch with three distal processes, each with distal bifurcations. Females have didelphic and amphidelphic uteri, an ovijector divided into vestibule, anterior and posterior sphincters, and anterior and posterior infundibula. The new species differs from its Neotropical congeners that have caudal bursa of type I, based on the presence of cervical alae and by having a spicular blade distally divided into two unequal branches, with the longer branch bifurcating at its distal portion and smaller branch with three distal processes, each distally bifurcated. The partial 18S rDNA sequence generated for Oswaldocruzia franciscoensis n. sp. is the first of a representative belonging to this genus in the Neotropical region.

Abstract
Host-parasite interactions exert strong selection pressures on the genomes of both host and parasite. These interactions can lead to negative frequency-dependent selection, a form of balancing selection that is hypothesised to explain the high levels of polymorphism seen in many host immune and parasite antigen loci. Here, we sequence the genomes of several individuals of Heligmosomoides bakeri, a model parasite of house mice, and Heligmosomoides polygyrus, a closely related parasite of wood mice. Although H. bakeri is commonly referred to as H. polygyrus in the literature, their genomes show levels of divergence that are consistent with at least a million years of independent evolution. The genomes of both species contain hyper-divergent haplotypes that are enriched for proteins that interact with the host immune response. Many of these haplotypes originated prior to the divergence between H. bakeri and H. polygyrus, suggesting that they have been maintained by long-term balancing selection. Together, our results suggest that the selection pressures exerted by the host immune response have played a key role in shaping patterns of genetic diversity in the genomes of parasitic nematodes.

Abstract
We describe a new fixed-dose combination injectable (FDCI) formulated with doramectin and levamisole hydrochloride (HCl) to target broad and overlapping spectra of gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) through two distinct modes of action. Here, we demonstrate the superior efficacy of the FDCI against mixed populations of cattle GINs in two dose confirmation studies conducted in Australia using artificially induced adult (Study 1) and immature (Study 2) GIN infections. Artificial infections consisted of Cooperia spp., Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, and Trichostrongylus axei. In both studies, cattle were inoculated with third-stage larvae and infections were confirmed by fecal egg count (FEC). Treatment groups in both studies were as follows: (1) negative control (saline, 0.9% sodium chloride), (2) positive control injectable endectocide (Study 1-0.2 mg/kg ivermectin; Study 2-0.2 mg/kg doramectin), (3) positive control injectable anthelmintic (7.5 mg/kg levamisole HCl), and (4) FDCI (0.2 mg/kg doramectin + 6.0 mg/kg levamisole HCl). Cattle were treated either 28 days (Study 1) or 6 days (Study 2) post-infection. On Days 14-16 (Study 1) or Days 20-21 (Study 2) post-treatment, cattle were euthanized and necropsied for the recovery, identification, and enumeration of worms. Treatment efficacy was calculated as reduction in worm burdens of treated cattle compared to saline-treated cattle, and treatments were considered effective if the geometric mean worm burden in the treatment group was reduced by ≥ 95% compared to the negative control group. In both studies, saline-treated cattle remained positive for GIN infections for the study duration. Ivermectin was less than 95% effective against Cooperia spp. (80.2%) and H. placei (24.8%) in Study 1, and levamisole HCl was less than 95% effective against Ostertagia spp. (47.1%) in Study 2. In contrast, the novel FDCI was 100% effective in treating adult and immature life stages of all cattle GINs included in the artificial infections, with no worms recovered at necropsy from doramectin + levamisole HCl-treated cattle. These data show a single administration of the FDCI provides broad-spectrum treatment of economically important cattle GINs.

Abstract
Many generic anthelmintics are commercially available; however, little information exists regarding product effectiveness compared to pioneer brands. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a generic eprinomectin to the pioneer eprinomectin, as well as to fenbendazole and fenbendazole in combination with the pioneer eprinomectin in grazing beef steers via a fecal egg count reduction test. Forty naturally infected steers were allocated into five treatment groups based on ranked fecal egg counts: 1. pioneer eprinomectin (Eprinex®, topical), 2. generic eprinomectin (Eprizero®, topical), 3. fenbendazole (Safeguard® 0.5% oral suspension), 4. combination of pioneer eprinomectin topical and fenbendazole oral suspension, 5. negative control. Fecal samples were collected on days -14, 0, 14, and 29. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS 9.4. Neither the pioneer nor the generic eprinomectin groups reached a 90% fecal egg count reduction (FECR) throughout the study with reductions of 50% and 11% for pioneer eprinomectin and 79% and - 5% for generic eprinomectin at days 14 and 29 post-treatment, respectively. Both the fenbendazole and combination groups showed 98% and 99% FECR, respectively, at 14 days post-treatment; these reductions dropped slightly at day 29 post-treatment to 94% and 89%, respectively. Primarily Cooperia punctata, Cooperia oncophora and Ostertagia ostertagi larvae were recovered from the coprocultures across all treatment groups. Interestingly, the proportions of C. punctata and C. oncophora essentially demonstrated a post-treatment reversal in the both the fenbendazole and combination treatment groups when comparing days 0 and 29, demonstrating prepatency period differences or a fenbendazole treatment effect.

Abstract
A total of 235 vials of nematodes held in the Australian Helminthological Collection of the South Australian Museum from 125 individuals of Isoodon macrourus were examined. The nematode assemblage of I. macrourus, comprising 12 families, including 16 genera and 23 identified species, was compared with the sympatric bandicoot species Perameles nasuta, 20 identified species (Sorensen's index of similarity 0.56) and P. pallescens, 12 identified species (Sorensen's index 0.51). Sprattellus cassonei n. sp. is distinguished from its congeners by having a synlophe with 7-8 ridges with the anterior ventral ridges interrupted, the morphology of the dorsal ray and the branching of the spicule tips. A single male specimen identified as Linstowinema sp. 1. is characterised by seven circles of body hooks, the oesophagus terminating at the level of the seventh circle and robust scale-like spines on the posterior ventral body. A complete description of the species will require additional material, including females. Difficulties in identifying individuals of the genus Mackerrastrongylus to species level are discussed. Overall similarities in the nematode assemblages of the three bandicoot hosts are likely due to shared relationships and similar behaviours.

Abstract
Citellinema Hall, 1918 includes 6 valid species of gastrointestinal nematodes of sciurids. Two species occur in the Palearctic and 4 in the Nearctic, 3 of which occur minimally across Colorado, Idaho and Oregon and 1, Citellinema bifurcatum, has a wide distribution across North America. Members of the genus are didelphic, possess a cephalic vesicle, a terminal spine-like process in females and feature robust spicules, consisting of a proximal end fused and semicylindrical shaft connected to a lamina supported by 2 terminal filiform processes. Typically, the size of the spicules is used to differentiate species. As part of the Beringian Coevolution Project, specimens provisionally identified as C. bifurcatum were collected through intensive field sampling of mammals and associated parasites from across localities spanning the Holarctic. These specimens revealed considerable genetic variability at both mitochondrial and nuclear loci, supporting the identification of deeply divergent clades. Examination of these new specimens, along with the holotypes of C. bifurcatum and Citellinema quadrivittati indicates that Citellinema monacis (previously synonymized with C. bifurcatum) should be resurrected and 3 additional species described. We suggest that the apparent bifurcated nature of the spicule should be considered a generic diagnostic trait, while the proportional length of the lamina relative to that of the spicule is used as a specific character. We demonstrate the critical need for continued inventory of often poorly known assemblages of hosts and parasites, contributing to a growing baseline of archival specimens, collections and information that make explorations of faunal structure and diversity possible.

Abstract
AIM This study was designed to investigate if culturing nematophagous fungi (NF) in the presence of a Haemonchus contortus larva crude extract (HcCE) enhances the nematocidal activity of nematophagous fungi liquid culture filtrates (NFCF). MATERIALS AND METHODS Four NF Arthrobotrys oligospora, A. musiformis, Duddingtonia flagrans and Clonostachys rosea were cultured in flasks (n = 5) containing Czapek-Dox broth medium (CDB) in the presence or absence of HcCE. NFCF recovered by filtration of each fungus (200 mg/mL) were assessed on H. contortus infective larvae (L3) using 96-well micro-titer plates (n = 4). Additionally, CDB and water were considered negative controls, while Ivermectin acted as a positive control. After 48 h confrontation, ten 10-μL aliquots of each well were deposited on slides and observed under the microscope (40 ×). Dead and alive larvae in the aliquots were quantified, and a mortality rate (MR) was estimated. RESULTS The MR of the different NFCF was greatly enhanced by the presence of HcCE. The four NF incubated in the absence of HcCE showed low mortality percentages from 8.2 to 25.8%; in contrast, when the assessed NF growth in the presence of HcCE showed a lethal activity ranging from 66.8 to 80.5%. Only C. rosea showed a moderate increase in the presence of the elicitor (42.7%). CONCLUSION This study shows evidence about the HcCE enhances the production of nematocidal activity in NFCF. Future studies should be performed to elucidate the compounds responsible of the nematocidal activity that could have important implications in the control of sheep haemonchosis.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal nematodes are leading causes of loss in livestock and are the primary restriction to its profitable production, worldwide. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence and diversity of sheep abomasum nematode species in Urmia (Iran) and Soran (Iraq) slaughterhouses from October 2019 to January 2021. A total of 280 abomasa (each city 140 samples) were randomly collected from the slaughtered sheep. The abomasal content and mucosa were removed and washed. The collected nematodes were morphologically identified. Genomic DNA was extracted from identified nematodes and a fragment from the internal transcribed spacer 2 ribosomal ribonucleic acid (ITS2-rDNA) gene was amplified. In Urmia city, two species including Teladorsagia circumcincta (40.7%), and two morphotypes of Marshallagia species; Marshallagia marshalli (35.0%) and M. trifida (4.3%) were identified. In Urmia city, 52.9% of the examined sheep were infected with at least one species of nematodes. The overall prevalence of abomasa infection with nematodes in Soran city was 91.4%. In the examined sheep abomasa in Soran city, four species of nematodes were identified, including Marshallagia species with two morphotypes, M. marshalli (85.0%) and M. trifida (20.7%), Teladorsagia circumcincta (32.1%), Parabronema skrjabini (1.4%), and Haemonchus contortus (0.7%). Except for H. contortus, all the other identified nematode species were confirmed using molecular techniques. It was concluded that abomasal nematode infections are widespread in sheep particularly in Soran city. Marshallagia marshalli and T. circumcincta were most prevalent nematodes in both regions. In addition, further molecular studies are recommended to understand the intra-specific variations in the genus Marshallagia and more accurate identification of morphotypes in these regions.

Abstract
Hassalstrongylus dollfusi (Díaz-Ungría, 1963) Durette-Desset, 1971 was described in a wild house mouse, Mus musculus, from Venezuela and, since then, has never been reported again in the type host or in any other host. In this work, specimens assignable to H. dollfusi were found at 10 localities in Northeast Argentina, in five species of sigmodontine rodents. The nematodes were attributed to H. dollfusi based on diagnostic characters such as: synlophe with 22-31 subequal ridges; in males, hypertrophy of right ray 4 of the male bursa, thickening of the dorsal ray and bases of rays 8, distal tip of the spicules bent and spoon shaped; and, in females, presence of subventral postvulvar alae supported by hypertrophied struts. The new host recorded are: Oligoryzomys fornesi, O. flavescens, O. nigripes, Holochilus chacarius and Akodon azarae. The parasite showed a strong preference for host species of Oligoryzomys, which appear to act as primary hosts. The parasite could be present, parasitizing different species of Oligoryzomys, in a geographic area from the type locality in Venezuela southward to north Corrientes in Argentina. It has not been reported from populations of Oligoryzomys spp. of the Argentinean and Brazilian Atlantic Forest, nor south of 28° S, which may be explained by constraints in the environmental conditions required by the free-living stages of the parasite. This study provides the first identification and redescription of H. dollfusi in southern South America, from autochthonous hosts, six decades after its description.

Abstract
A new species of Trichostrongyloidea (Nematoda: Heligmonellidae), Hassalstrongylus lauroi n. sp., is described from specimens collected from the small intestine of the rodent Hylaeamys seuanezi in the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil (Igrapiúna, state of Bahia). The genus Hassalstrongylus includes 17 species, which parasitize rodents occurring in the Neotropical and Nearctic regions. It differs from the genus Stilestrongylus through its smaller number of ridges in the synlophe and through the size of the genital cone. The main taxonomic characteristics of this new species are the subsymmetrical caudal bursa of type 2-2-1, ray 8 branching out at the base of the dorsal trunk, right lobe smaller than the left, and rays 4 and 5 of robust nature. In addition, the ornamental ray 5 and the robustness of ray 4 on the male caudal bursa, along with the modification of the ridges of the posterior end of the female, allow us to consider the specimens found to be a new species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The multifaceted interactions between gastrointestinal (GI) helminth parasites, host gut microbiota and immune system are emerging as a key area of research within the field of host-parasite relationships. In spite of the plethora of data available on the impact that GI helminths exert on the composition of the gut microflora, whether alterations of microbial profiles are caused by direct parasite-bacteria interactions or, indirectly, by alterations of the GI environment (e.g. mucosal immunity) remains to be determined. Furthermore, no data is thus far available on the downstream roles that qualitative and quantitative changes in gut microbial composition play in the overall pathophysiology of parasite infection and disease. RESULTS In this study, we investigated the fluctuations in microbiota composition and local immune microenvironment of sheep vaccinated against, and experimentally infected with, the 'brown stomach worm' Teladorsagia circumcincta, a parasite of worldwide socio-economic significance. We compared the faecal microbial profiles of vaccinated and subsequently infected sheep with those obtained from groups of unvaccinated/infected and unvaccinated/uninfected animals. We show that alterations of gut microbial composition are associated mainly with parasite infection, and that this involves the expansion of populations of bacteria with known pro-inflammatory properties that may contribute to the immunopathology of helminth disease. Using novel quantitative approaches for the analysis of confocal microscopy-derived images, we also show that gastric tissue infiltration of T cells is driven by parasitic infection rather than anti-helminth vaccination. CONCLUSIONS Teladorsagia circumcincta infection leads to an expansion of potentially pro-inflammatory gut microbial species and abomasal T cells. This data paves the way for future experiments aimed to determine the contribution of the gut flora to the pathophysiology of parasitic disease, with the ultimate aim to design and develop novel treatment/control strategies focused on preventing and/or restricting bacterial-mediated inflammation upon infection by GI helminths. Abstract
Ashworthius sidemi, a blood-sucking abomasal nematode, has been identified in various wild ruminants, including deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), fallow deer (Dama dama) and moose (Alces alces). Although it has been observed throughout Poland, most sightings have been in the eastern part of the country. However, more recently, A. sidemi has been confirmed in the Ruszów Forest District (Lower Silesian Wilderness). It is now possible to test the faeces of cattle for the DNA of the third-stage infectious larvae (L3) of A. sidemi. The present paper describes such a molecular study of 120 faecal samples collected from cattle grazed in the Ruszów Forest District and Biebrza Marshland, where A. sidemi had previously been detected in wildlife. In this study, no A. sidemi DNA was identified in any of the examined samples.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal helminths can have a detrimental effect on the fitness of wild ungulates. Arctic and Subarctic ecosystems are ideal for the study of host-parasite interactions due to the comparatively simple ecological interactions and limited confounding factors. We used a unique dataset assembled in the early seventies to study the diversity of gastrointestinal helminths and their effect on fitness indicators of Dall’s sheep, Ovis dalli dalli, in the Mackenzie Mountains, Northwest Territories, Canada. Parasite diversity included nine species, among which the abomasal nematode Marshallagia marshalli occurred with the highest prevalence and infection intensity. The intensity of M. marshalli increased with age and was negatively associated with body condition and pregnancy status in Dall’s sheep across all the analyses performed. The intensity of the intestinal whipworm, Trichuris schumakovitschi, decreased with age. No other parasites were significantly associated with age, body condition, or pregnancy. Our study suggests that M. marshalli might negatively influence fitness of adult female Dall’s sheep.

Abstract
This is the first integrated study of the effects on gastric secretion, inflammation and fundic mucins after infection with L3 T. circumcincta and in the very early period following transplantation of adult worms. At 3 months-of-age, 20 Coopworth lambs were infected intraruminally with 35,000 L3; infected animals were killed on Days 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 post-infection and 6 controls on either Day 0 or 30 post-infection. Another 15 Romney cross lambs received 10,000 adult worms at 4-5 months-of-age though surgically-implanted abomasal cannulae and were killed after 6, 12, 24 and 72 hours; uninfected controls were also killed at 72 hours. Blood was collected at regular intervals from all animals for measurement of serum gastrin and pepsinogen and abomasal fluid for pH measurement from cannulated sheep. Tissues collected at necropsy were fixed in Bouin's fluid for light microscopy, immunocytochemistry and mucin staining and in Karnovsky's fluid for electron microscopy. Nodules around glands containing developing larvae were seen on Day 5 p.i., but generalised effects on secretion occurred only after parasite emergence and within hours after transplantation of adult worms. After L3 infection, there were maximum worm burdens on Days 10-15 post-infection, together with peak tissue eosinophilia, inhibition of gastric acid secretion, hypergastrinaemia, hyperpepsinogenaemia, loss of parietal cells, enlarged gastric pits containing less mucin and increased numbers of mucous neck cells. After adult transplantation, serum pepsinogen was significantly increased after 9 hours and serum gastrin after 18 hours. Parallel changes in host tissues and the numbers of parasites in the abomasal lumen suggest that luminal parasites, but not those in the tissues, are key drivers of the pathophysiology and inflammatory response in animals exposed to parasites for the first time. These results are consistent with initiation of the host response by parasite chemicals diffusing across the surface epithelium, possibly aided by components of ES products which increased permeability. Parietal cells appear to be a key target, resulting in secondary increases in serum gastrin, pit elongation, loss of surface mucins and inhibition of chief cell maturation. Inflammation occurs in parallel, and could either cause the pathology or exacerbate the direct effects of ES products.

Abstract
An experiment was carried out to study the possible interaction between dexamethasone (DXM) treatment and the efficacy of ivermectin (IVM) treatment in young cattle. Two groups, each of seven calves, were experimentally inoculated with an equal mixture containing 15,000 third stage larvae of Cooperia oncophora and Ostertagia ostertagi each, and with no history of being resistant to any anthelmintics. However, in this study C. oncophora was unexpectedly classified as IVM-resistant according to the outcome from the faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). Blood parameters and faecal egg counts (FEC) were monitored from 0 to 35 days post infection (d.p.i.). The calves in one group received intramuscular injections of short and long-term acting DXM at 22 and 24 d.p.i., respectively. The other group remained as a control. Three days post patency (24 d.p.i.) both groups were injected subcutaneously with IVM (Merial) at the recommended dose (0.2mg/kg). A significant difference (p<0.001) in FEC patterns was observed between groups. Although both groups still excreted eggs (100-200 eggs per gram faeces) 11 days post anthelmintic treatment, the control group had a significantly higher reduction between 23 and 35 d.p.i. (p=0.025). After 35 days, four animals per group were euthanized, and worms in the gastrointestinal tract were counted. No O. ostertagi were found in the abomasums, but low to high numbers (800-6200) of C. oncophora remained in the small intestines in both groups. Overall, these findings indicated that there was an interaction between the efficacy of IVM and DXM treatment. As significantly lower plasma levels of IVM were observed in the DXM group, we conclude that the impaired efficacy of ivermectin was most likely due to the altered pharmacokinetics.

Abstract
Outdoor observations were made on the rate of development of the free-living stages of O. ostertagi at different times of the year, and on the migratory activities and longevity of the larvae in faeces, on herbage and in soil.The effect of temperature on the rate of development of eggs and larvae in faeces, and the effect of temperature and humidity on the longevity of eggs and larvae when separated from faeces, were studied in the laboratory.The results of these observations are discussed in relation to translation (that is, the process whereby eggs in faeces become infective larvae on herbage available to the grazing animal) and to the transmission of infection in the field.I wish to thank Mr J. Abstract
Laboratory experiments indicated that third-stage larvae of T. axei and T colubriformis were able to penetrate soil to a depth of 12 in. or more, although most larvae remained in the upper 2 in. No geotaxis was observed.Heavy downflows of water caused severe mortalities but did not affect the rate of movement of surviving larvae through the soil. Very limited random lateral movement occurred in turf, being more pronounced in the presence of faeces. Prolonged desiccation was extremely lethal to infective larvae. The activity of larvae was directly and linearly proportional to normal temperatures. The average activity of groups of larvae declined with time.The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance and facilities provided by Professor B. G. Abstract
We investigated direct anthelmintic effects associated with the feeding of fresh tanniferous forages against established populations of Haemonchus contortus and Cooperia curticei in lambs. Twenty-four parasite naive lambs were inoculated with a single dose of infective larvae of these two parasites 27 days prior to the start of the feeding experiment. Lambs were individually fed with either chicory (Cichorium intybus), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) or a ryegrass/lucerne mixture (control) for 17 days. Animals where then united to one flock and subjected to control feeding for another 11 days to test the sustainability of potentially lowered egg excretion generated by tanniferous forage feeding. When compared to the control, administration of all tanniferous forages was associated with significant reductions of total daily faecal egg output specific to H. contortus (chicory: 89%; birdsfoot trefoil: 63%; sainfoin: 63%; all tests P<0.05) and a tendency of reduced H. contortus worm burden (chicory: 15%; birdsfoot trefoil: 49% and sainfoin: 35% reduction). Irrespective of the condensed tannin (CT) containing fodder, no anthelmintic effects were found against C. curticei. Cessation of CT-feeding followed by non-CT control feeding did not result in a re-emergence of faecal egg counts based on faecal dry matter (FECDM) in any group, suggesting that egg output reductions are sustainable. The moderate to high concentrations of CTs in birdsfoot trefoil (15.2 g CTs kg(-1) dry matter (DM)) and sainfoin (26.1 g CTs kg(-1) DM) were compatible with the hypothesis that the antiparasitic effect of these forages is caused by their content of CTs. For chicory (3 g CTs kg(-1) DM), however, other secondary metabolites need to be considered. Overall, birdsfoot trefoil and in particular sainfoin seem promising candidates in contributing to an integrated control strategy against H. contortus not only by mitigating parasite related health disturbances of the host but also by a sustained reduction of pasture contamination.

Abstract
Twenty-four calves unexposed to pasture were allocated to four groups and inoculated with either two doses of 5 million Eimeria alabamensis oocysts at turn-out (E), 90,000 L3 of Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora divided on six occasions (N) or both oocysts and larvae as above (E + N). A control group was left uninoculated (C). For 10 weeks, the groups grazed in separate uniform paddocks not previously grazed by cattle. By day 5, most calves in groups E and E + N developed clinical coccidiosis that resulted in reduced weight gain compared to C and N. Mean trichostrongylid faecal egg counts in groups N and E + N never exceeded 300 eggs per gram of faeces, and average serum pepsinogen levels were less than 3.8 U tyrosine. This experiment demonstrates the potential impact of E. alabamensis on the performance of previously unexposed calves, whereas no aggravated effects were observed due to concurrent infections with gastrointestinal nematodes.

Abstract
To demonstrate the possible role of nematode parasites in the modification of host susceptibility to scrapie, experiments were conducted using sheep naturally exposed to scrapie, chosen by their genotype at the PrP gene, and infected with Teladorsagia circumcincta. Two 4-year duration experiments demonstrated that the nematode infection shortened the development of scrapie with a significant regression between the level of infection and age at first scrapie symptoms (P < 0.006). Investigations by ELISA tests in different species of nematode parasites of the digestive tract collected from scrapie infected ewes did not reveal the presence of PrPSc. In scrapie-infected C57BL mice, infected or not with Heligmosoides polygyrus at various times, parasitized animals showed a slight but significantly longer survival period. Assays on transmission by the larvae hatching from eggs collected from scrapie-infected mice were unsuccessful. We concluded that nematodes modify host susceptibility to scrapie, but their role in the horizontal transmission of the disease was not demonstrated.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to assess the efficiency of selection on the basis of response to artificial challenges in order to breed sheep resistant to natural infection. A short-term divergent selection process was designed to estimate the genetic parameters of these two traits. Two flocks, including 100 Romanov ram lambs each, were challenged in 1990 when they were 6 months old. One flock received three artificial infections with 20 000 third-stage Teladorsagia circumcincta larvae, at intervals of 7 weeks. Faecal egg counts (FEC) were performed on Days 22, 25 and 28 post infection (p.i.) and the animals were drenched on Day 28 p.i. The other flock was grazed for 5 months on a pasture contaminated with the same species. Faecal samples were taken from the lambs at similar ages. About 5 rams with the lowest FEC and 5 with the highest FEC were selected in each flock and mated with unselected ewes. Their offspring (200 animals) were challenged in 1992, half in the same way as their sires, and the other half by the other method. Because of a drought in the summer of 1990, it was necessary to repeat part of the experiment, and in 1992 the 5 and 8 rams with the lowest and highest FEC, respectively, were selected from the offspring challenged on the pasture in 1992 and were mated with unselected ewes. Their progeny (about 80 animals) were challenged in 1994, half by natural infection, half by artificial infection. The mean FEC of the flock increased from the first to the third artificial infection. The natural infection was highly variable in different years, reflecting the difficulty of assessing resistance using this mode of challenge. Genetic parameters were estimated using animal models and REML solutions. The repeatabilities of the FEC following artificial and natural infection were 0.49 and 0.70 respectively within a period of one week, and 0.22 and 0.41 respectively for periods separated by intervals of 7 weeks; the heritabilities of the single egg count were 0.22 and 0.38 respectively. The genetic correlation was 0.87: the FEC recorded under natural or artificial infection appear to depend on the same genetic potential.

Abstract
Compared to INRA 401 lambs reared in France, Black Belly (BB) lambs reared in Guadeloupe (F.W.I.) were highly resistant to both primary and secondary experimental infection with Haemonchus contortus. To investigate this huge inter-breed difference, a nucleus flock of BB was constituted, and experiments were conducted to: (i) confirm this difference in lambs born in France, (ii) check whether it was similar for Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Teladorsagia circumcincta, and (iii) find out whether this difference was age-related. Forty BB lambs, 84 F1 lambs (BB siresxINRA 401 ewes) and 88 INRA 401 lambs born in two cohorts were used in an experimental design involving three host breeds, both genders and two age-groups (3.5- and 7-month-old when first infected). The limited availability of BB lambs made the study incomplete. Infection consisted of the administration of two doses of 10,000 infective larvae of one of the nematode species, separated by an anthelmintic treatment and an interval of 1 week before the second dose was administered. Fecal egg counts (FECs) were done on Days 28 and 35 after each infection; ewe lambs of the INRA 401 and F1 breeds were necropsied, the worm burden was established, the length of the female worms measured and the eggs in utero counted. For H. contortus and T. colubriformis, the FEC was lower in the BB than in the INRA 401 lambs, and the FEC found for the F1 lambs was intermediate. For T. circumcincta, only data for the F1 and INRA 401 lambs were available, and the FECs for these breeds were the same. In all three breeds, the FEC determined after the second dose was significantly lower than that found after the first dose in the ewe lambs, but not in the ram lambs. Infecting the lambs when they were 7- instead of 3.5-month-old significantly lowered egg excretion of both parasites in the F1 (P<0.0001), but not the INRA 401 lambs. Worm numbers in the F1 and in the INRA 401 ewe lambs confirmed the FEC data, many F1 lambs being free of T. colubriformis. The H. contortus female worms were shorter and had fewer eggs in utero in the F1 than in the INRA 401 lambs. A higher proportion of T. circumcincta was at the fourth larval stage in the F1 lambs. In conclusion, the BB breed is much more resistant than INRA 401 to H. contortus, with the F1 lambs being more like the BBs after the second dose. This difference was also found for T. colubriformis and, to a lesser extent, for T. circumcincta.

Abstract
The targeted application of anthelmintic treatments represents one of the current available solutions to slow down the development of anthelmintic resistance within worm populations. Within an experimental flock of dairy goats, control of gastrointestinal parasitism by such selective treatments, targeting the most receptive animals within a flock, was previously found to be effective and to have no detrimental consequences on milk production. The objectives of the current study were to verify the validity of this method in farm conditions. Eleven dairy goat farms from three main areas of production in France were surveyed for 2 years. In six farms, the survey was prolonged for a third year. During year 1, systematic treatments were applied during the grazing season whereas in year 2 and or year 3, treatments were given exclusively to the goats in first lactation and to the multiparous ones with the highest potential of milk production. The level of nematode infection was measured four times per year through individual coproscopical examinations and the mean annual production of milk was recorded. No significant changes in egg excretion nor in milk production were noticed in any farm during years 2 or 3 after switching from the systematic to the selective mode of treatments. These results confirmed that targeted application of anthelmintics might represent a way to combine the control of trichostrongyles and the prevention of anthelmintic resistance.

Abstract
Ten 4-month-old female sheep of the Karagouniko dairy breed were used to monitor the seasonal fluctuations of strongyle infections in sheep during the first year of grazing under the traditional production system in the region of Trikala, Greece, where control of nematodes is currently based exclusively on the frequent use of anthelmintics which might contribute to the appearance of anthelmintic resistance. The sheep grazed communal pasture plots and did not receive any anthelmintic treatment during the entire study period. Faecal egg counts (epg), plasma pepsinogen levels, blood values, and genera of parasitic strongyles recovered from coprocultures were recorded monthly. Mean epg for strongyle-type eggs were significantly higher during summer. Mean plasma pepsinogen levels were significantly higher during spring and summer. The genera of parasitic strongyles recovered from the faecal cultures were Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, Cooperia, Nematodirus, Oesophagostomum, and Chabertia. The percentages of larvae for Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Cooperia, and Oesophagostomum were significantly higher during winter. The percentages of larvae for Trichostrongylus were significantly higher during summer. During summer, levels of RBC, HGB, and HCT were depressed and levels of MCV, MCH, and MCHC were elevated. Mean epg for strongyle-type eggs had a significant inverse correlation with RBC, HGB, HCT, and positive correlation with MCH, MCHC, and percentages of eosinophils in differential leucocyte counts. The seasonal pattern of infection observed in the present study indicates that it is possible to decrease the number of treatments to one per year, thus, reducing the possibility for the appearance of anthelmintic resistance.

Abstract
The persistent efficacy of doramectin and ivermectin injectable against moderate and high infection levels of Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora were evaluated in cattle. Calves were allocated to six groups of six animals. On Day 0 animals of Groups I1/I2 and D1/D2 were treated with 0.2mg/kg ivermectin and doramectin injectable, respectively. Animals of the C1, I1 and D1 groups received a daily (moderate) infection of 1000 L3 of O. ostertagi and 1000 L3 of C. oncophora, and animals of the C2, I2 and D2 groups received a daily (high) infection of 10,000 L3 of each species. The animals were infected for 21 days with both species, the infections with C. oncophora and O. ostertagi started from Days 8 and 15 post treatment, respectively. Animals were necropsied on Day 40. The calculation of the persistent activity of ivermectin and doramectin was based on the efficacy against the different developmental and adult stages of both parasites. The present study confirmed that infection levels may influence the duration of persistent efficacy of an anthelmintic. Doramectin had at the moderate infection level a persistent efficacy of at least 35 days against O. ostertagi and at least 28 days against C. oncophora; at the high infection dose persistent efficacy was somewhat shorter i.e. up to 33 days and approximately 28 days, respectively. The duration of persistent efficacy of ivermectin against O. ostertagi at the moderate infection level was between 14 and 25 days, at the high dose level up to 25 days. Persistent efficacy of ivermectin against C. oncophora could, at both infection doses, not be measured, with the present experimental design.

Abstract
A series of experiments was carried out to examine the effects of two different isolates of the nematode-trapping fungus Duddingtonia flagrans to reduce the number of free-living larvae of the bovine lungworm, Dictyocaulus viviparus. A laboratory dose-titration assay showed that isolates CI3 and Troll A of D. flagrans significantly reduced (P < 0.05 to P < 0.001) the number of infective D. viviparus larvae in cultures at dose-levels of 6250 and 12,500 chlamydospores/g of faeces. The larval reduction capacity was significantly higher for Troll A compared to CI3 when lungworm larvae were mixed in faecal cultures with eggs of Cooperia oncophora or Ostertagia ostertagi and treated with 6250 chlamydospores/g of faeces. Both fungal isolates showed a stronger effect on gastrointestinal larvae than on lungworm larvae. Two plot trials conducted in 1996 and 1997 involved deposition of artificial faecal pats containing free-living stages of D. viviparus and C. oncophora on grass plots. Herbage around the pats was collected at regular intervals and infective larvae recovered, counted and identified. These experiments showed that both D. flagrans isolates reduced the number of gastrointestinal as well as lungworm larvae in faecal pats. During both plot trials, the transmission of C. oncophora larvae, but not D. viviparus, from faecal pats to the surrounding herbage was clearly affected by climatic conditions. After collection of faecal pats from the grass plots one month after deposition, the wet and dry weight of pats as well as organic matter content were determined. No differences were found between the fungus-treated and non-treated control pats. This indicated that the rate of degradation of faeces was not affected by the addition of the fungus.

Abstract
A mast cell granule protease has been isolated and purified from nematode-infected caprine jejunal homogenate by FPLC techniques and termed Goat Mast Cell Protease (GMCP). The purification steps were monitored for proteolytic activity against the synthetic substrate carboxybenzoyl-L-lysine thiobenzyl ester (BLT) and the presence of a homogenous protease preparation in the final sample was shown by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis. This protease was compared with enzymatic activity from isolated mucosal mast cells, which demonstrated the putative mast cell-derived source of the purified enzyme. Rabbit antiserum was raised against the protease and through the use of immunohistochemistry and Western blotting techniques the mast cell origin of the protease was confirmed. NH2-Terminal amino acid sequence analysis demonstrated a high degree of homology between GMCP and other previously isolated mast cell proteases including sheep mast cell protease (SMCP). Substrate analysis showed that GMCP also had an unusual dual chymotrypsin-like and trypsin-like activity similar to SMCP and bovine duodenase.

Abstract
Calves which had received daily concurrent infections of 2000 Ostertagia ostertagi and 10,000 Cooperia oncophora infective larvae over a 42-day period displayed a range of clinical signs typical of acute parasitic gastroenteritis including inappetence, weight loss, hypoalbuminaemia and diarrhoea. There were consistent and significant depressions in both digestive efficiency and nitrogen retention. Radioisotopic studies revealed marked disturbances in protein metabolism which were associated with high losses of plasma proteins into the gastrointestinal tract. On post mortem examination larval establishment of O ostertagi was seen to be high. The adverse changes were prevented by the prior administration of a morantel bolus.

Abstract
Reproduction can alter the course of ovine nematodiasis; fecal nematode egg concentrations often increase near lambing and throughout lactation, a phenomenon referred to as the periparturient rise. To identify the host mechanisms that might link these disparate events, i.e. lactation and the fecundity of gastrointestinal trichostrongyles, ovariectomized ewes were injected daily with progesterone and/or prolactin, or saline. Progesterone treatment commenced 20 days before inoculation with Haemonchus contortus and prolactin was administered throughout the 30-day infection period. Ovariectomized ewes receiving prolactin during the experimental infection maintained higher daily fecal egg concentrations than the progesterone, progesterone/prolactin, or the control treatment groups. However, ovariectomized ewes that received 20 days of pre-inoculation exposure to progesterone, as well as prolactin during the infection, had greater numbers of nematodes that were larger than the other treatment groups. Thus, the sequential delivery of these hormones that are associated with the reproductive cycle in ewes produced some of the same results that occur during periparturient rise.

Abstract
The resistance level of Haemonchus contortus was studied on a farm where benzimidazole resistance had been detected in 1980 and where, since 1982, only levamisole had been used for worm control. Egg development tests gave LD50 values of 0.18, 0.19 and 0.21 microgram ml-1 thiabendazole for samples taken from ewes in 1988 compared with 0.21 microgram ml-1 in 1981. Studies on sheep experimentally infected with larvae cultured from the faeces of these ewes confirmed the continued resistance of H contortus to benzimidazoles, and demonstrated the absence of benzimidazole resistance in other nematode species together with the susceptibility of all species to levamisole.

Abstract
In this review, advances in cryopreservation of helminth parasites are reported. Our own studies demonstrate that metacestodes of Echinococcus multilocularis can be maintained in a viable state for at least 1-2 years by appropriate deep-freezing and storage in liquid nitrogen. Infective larvae of the nematode Toxocara canis cryopreserved for 1 week in liquid nitrogen were maintained after thawing in vitro in a chemically defined medium for 35 weeks. Although motility of previously deep-frozen larvae was reduced they produced secretory/excretory antigens of similar immunodiagnostic quality as those from unfrozen larvae. Whereas infective larvae of several species of trichostrongy-lids can be easily cryopreserved, the infective larvae of the cattle lungworm, Dictyocaulus viviparus, and muscle larvae of Trichinella spiralis are more sensitive to damage by subzero temperatures. Therefore, survival rates after cryopreservation are low, but improvement of the cooling schedules appears to be feasible. It is concluded that cryopreservation of certain stages of helminth and protozoan parasites is a useful technique for long-term storage of defined isolates, which can contribute considerably to reducing the number of experimental animals usually required for serial passages.

Abstract
In two grazing experiments carried out in 1982 and 1983 the prophylactic effect on gastro-intestinal helminthiasis of a single ivermectin treatment of calves 3 weeks after turnout was studied in animals which were turned out early on contaminated pasture and in calves which were turned out late on mown pasture. A single ivermectin treatment 3 weeks after early turnout did not prevent heavy helminth infections. However, such single treatment of calves 3 weeks after a late turnout on mown pasture appears to be a promising way of preventing heavy infections. Late turnout on mown pasture without anthelmintic treatment was not enough to prevent heavy infections. Ivermectin treatment was more effective against Ostertagia spp. than against Cooperia spp. There was no effect on the faecal egg output of Nematodirus helvetianus. Predominantly due to the dry summer, infections were lighter in 1983 than in 1982. These lower infections, and possibly also a delay in the onset of inhibition and differences in helminth strains, may explain the lower proportion of inhibited development in Ostertagia spp. in 1983 than in the comparable groups in 1982.

New parasite records are: Agriostomum equidentatum from the gemsbok, Cooperia neitzi from the bushbuck, Cooperia sp. from the gemsbok and the red hartebeest, Cooperia yoshidai from the waterbuck and the tsessebe, Dictyocaulus viviparus from the bushbuck, Haemonchus bedfordi from the waterbuck, Haemonchus contortus from the gemsbok, Haemonchus krugeri from the steenbok from the KNP, Impalaia nudicollis from the gemsbok and the red hartebeest, Impalaia tuberculata from the oribi and the waterbuck, Impalaia spp. from the kudu, Longistrongylus meyeri from the steenbok from Riekerts Laager and the gemsbok, Longistrongylus sabie from the steenbok from the KNP, Longistrongylus schrenki from the tsessebe, Parabronema sp. from the tsessebe and the red hartebeest, Paracooperia serrata from the gemsbok and the steenbok from the KGNP, Pneumostrongylus calcaratus from the bushbuck, Strongyloides sp. from the gemsbok, Trichostrongylus sp. from the gemsbok, the red hartebeest and the steenbok from the KGNP, Trichostrongylus axei from the blue duiker, Trichostrongylus falculatus from the bushbuck and the oribi, Trichostrongylus instabilis from the bushbuck, the steenbok from the KNP and the oribi and Trichostrongylus thomasi from the grey duikers and tsessebe. Host specificity of the parasites was not marked and crossinfestation was common. This was not true for the giraffe, since none of the helminths of these animals were found in the antelope and vice versa.

Abstract
The recovery of gastrointestinal nematode infective larvae from herbage collected manually was compared with the recovery from herbage ingested by sheep with oesophageal fistulae, on five occasions during the grazing season. At least three times more larvae were recovered from the oesophageal fistulates than by manual collection. There was no significant variation between the numbers of larvae collected at 09.00, 12.00 and 15.00, nor was there any difference in the distribution of genera recovered by the two methods. The worm burdens of tracer lambs and the larval counts from the fistulated sheep were used to estimate the rate of larval establishment.

Abstract
Blood eosinophilia was seen in 36 per cent of 115 adult bantams naturally infested with Trichostrongylus tenuis; the maximum individual count was 56 per cent eosinophils. There were no measurable levels of IgE in the plasma samples and no foci of eosinophils were found in the tissues.

Abstract
Laboratory investigations were designed to study the influence of temperature, pH and oxygen tension on the growth of Arthrobotrys oligospora, a nematode-trapping microfungus. Experiments were performed to evaluate the potential role of A. oligospora in destroying third-stage larvae of Cooperia spp. on agar plates and in cattle faeces. The fungus had a growth rate optimum at 23 degrees C and pH 6. Anaerobic cultivation for 23 hours at 23 degrees C and 39 degrees C inhibited fungal growth, but it did not destroy the fungus, which regained growth upon a subsequent shift to aerobic conditions at 23 degrees C. Under experimental conditions in petri-dishes containing agar, the nematode-trapping efficiency of the fungus was striking in that 100% of a population of third-stage larvae of Cooperia spp. was captured within three days of the experiment. The trapping efficiency in faeces was shown to depend upon the inoculation level. At a concentration of approximately 2500 conidia per g faeces, 99% of the larvae were destroyed. The possibilities of using nematode-trapping fungi in controlling animal-parasitic nematodes are discussed.
